Experience Holland College: Tour a campus to learn about programs and services

Teachers from across the province paid a visit to Holland College recently to find out more about college programs and services as part of a project called Experience Holland College .

The project has seen more than 1,000 Island students visit Holland College locations to learn more about the college. This time it was teachers who received a behind-the-scenes tour of the college.

The tour explored programs at the Prince of Wales Campus such as Heritage Retrofit Carpentry, Bioscience Technology, Music Performance, Paramedicine, Kinesiology, and Practical Nursing, as well as culinary programs at the Tourism and Culinary Centre. Tours of other campuses and centres can also be arranged.

“Sharing what student learning looks like at Holland College is significant,” says Holland College President Dr. Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald . “Teachers are a major influence in their students’ lives, and we are confident they will take their experience back to their schools and share it with students.”

During the tour the teachers also learned more about the supports Holland College offers to assist students, the internship opportunities that give students practical experience in their chosen field, and the career pathways available to graduates who want to continue their studies at a university.

In addition to tours for high school students and teachers, the Holland College recruitment team is available to conduct tours for prospective students and their family and friends. To book a tour, click here or visit www.hollandcollege.com and click the Campus Tours icon.

Some of the many services available

Student Support Services provide a comprehensive suite of free services for students, from mental and physical health to academic supports to help prepare for the job market.

Counselling services provide students with free, confidential access to a professional counsellor anytime, anywhere, via phone or Internet.

Student Help Center is for students who need to talk to someone from Academic Support Services; the Office of Retention, Part-Time Studies & Career Planning; Admissions; First Year Advising; Scholarships and Awards; or the Writing Centre. Prince of Wales Campus Health Clinic in Charlottetown is open Monday to Friday for students from any Holland College location.

At the Summerside Waterfront Campus, a Nurse Practitioner is available on Thursdays from 12:30 to 3:30 pm.

Nurse practitioners are available to see students by appointment for non-emergency medical services such as sexual health counselling and screening, pregnancy testing and support, mental health management, referrals, prescriptions, and assessment of injuries. Students from any Holland College location are welcome to book an appointment. Academic Support Team is on hand to support those who have a learning disability or suspect that they may have one.

“We will help you identify supports such as learning plans and adaptive technologies that will ensure you can reach your fullest academic potential,” says Dr. MacDonald. “We provide appropriate and reasonable accommodations for your disability.”

Future plans

A new wellness centre , which is expected to open in September 2023 at the Prince of Wales Campus in Charlottetown, will centralize health and wellness support, mental wellness, and education services for students, staff, and their families. Holland College plans to renovate and expand a building the college already owns on Kent Street to accommodate the center. The three-story building will offer a broad, integrated suite of services including a health clinic with two nurse practitioners, student academic support services, and career, mental health, and academic counselling. There will also be a focus on healthy living emphasizing the importance of sleep, diet, exercise, and social interaction.

The province of PEI has committed $2.4 million toward the capital cost of the project. The remaining funds will be provided by the college through external fundraising.

The wellness and health center will have satellite offerings at all campuses and centres across the province to provide full-service supports and to encourage student engagement.

“We recognize that, increasingly, the needs of our students are broader than the development of career skills and goals,” Dr. MacDonald says. “We want to provide an integrated, supportive environment so our students can grow in our community and lead healthy, empowered, and productive lives. We also want to ensure that our staff and their families have timely access to the appropriate health and wellness supports they require.”

The centralization, expansion, and integration of existing and new services will ensure that no students or staff are left without the supports they need.

Housing & Residential Life

Holland international living center (hilc), housing location.

Holland International Living Center

Holland International Living Center, Ithaca, NY 14850

Students from all over the world form a global community at the Jerome H. Holland International Living Center. One hundred sixty-eight students, international students as well as non-international students with a passion for cross-cultural exchange -- all with an interest in international issues -- share their cultures and traditions at HILC, and provide support and assistance to Cornell's international undergraduate students.HILC is a home away from home for its residents, offering friendship, support, and a respectful community. To accommodate the needs of international students, HILC is the only undergraduate residence hall that remains open during winter break for residents who need to stay on campus.

Political, economic, social, and cultural events and discussions are common at HILC, but students also take time to relax and have fun. With a student-run Council, there is always something fun and exciting to do at HILC.

Founded in 1970, HILC was renamed in 1985 in honor of distinguished alumnus Jerome H. Holland and his commitment to global understanding, respect for human rights, and the pursuit of education.

Explore the HILC community pages in CampusGroups.

Community features:

  • Open to first-year, transfer, and upperlevel students
  • 168 residents
  • Located on North Campus, near Robert Purcell Community Center and Appel Commons
  • All student rooms are within clusters. Each cluster of rooms includes one double, one triple, two singles and a shared bathroom. Clusters are single gender; floors are mixed gender.
  • Several clusters make up a “unit.”  Each unit has a study room, social lounge and kitchen.
  • Large community lounge with TV and ping pong table
  • Bedrooms contain, for each occupant: an extra-long twin bed, a closet and a bureau (or wardrobe/bureau combination), a desk and desk chair, a desk lamp, a wastebasket, and floor carpeting
  • Wireless Internet access

HILC rooms do not have air conditioning.

Faculty involvement:

HILC has several Faculty and Community Fellows that provide students with opportunities to explore and cultivate their academic, intellectual, and cultural interests. You will find them attending events in your building, dining with students, and leading on and off campus trips to lectures, plays, films, concerts, and regional points of interest.

How to apply for residency:

Rising junior and rising senior students may select to live in a program house as part of the fall Housing Selection process while rising sophomores can select during their General Room Selection process in the spring. New students can indicate their preference to live in a program house on their New Student Housing Application.

*Please note in some years when housing space is limited and there are available spaces in the Jerome H. Holland International Living Center (HILC), some students who did not preference housing in HILC may be placed there. While the HILC community is intended for all students interested in cross-cultural exchange, all students of all identities and interests are welcome. Regardless of their housing preference, all students residing in HILC will have the opportunity to connect with each other, build community, and grow. Finally, given the theme of HILC, all residents are expected to be thoughtful of the intention of the space and engage with every student in a respectful and open-minded manner.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
