Review: At the Hella Mega Tour it was all about the cult of Green Day

“Do the kids still like rock music?” Fall Out Boy’s bassist Pete Wentz asked the Petco Park crowd, halfway through its set at the Hella Mega Tour. Judging from the screams that echoed throughout downtown San Diego, it’s safe to say the kids — and the genre — are alright.

Hordes of fans swarmed East Village on Sunday night to see three big names: Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer (The Interrupters, a ska-punk band from Los Angeles, opened the event). Though the stacked lineup straddles the pop-punk genre, the rock ‘n’ roll vibe permeated the stadium. And ticketholders dressed the part, clad in a standard uniform of ripped jeans and band tees.

Though elder millennials and young Gen Xers dominated the crowd, the all-ages show didn’t discriminate. Nearly every generation was represented in the stands, from young kids out late on a school night to Boomers with “Cool Mom” tank tops. Though similarly dressed, the fanbase spanned all walks of life — filled with self-identified outsiders and misfits who leaned on the music of all three bands to get through hard times.

Mere hours before the show, a light sprinkle threatened to re- re- schedule Hella Mega Tour’s San Diego date, originally slated for July 24. Luckily, the weather pulled through to deliver clear skies and dry chairs by the 5:30 p.m. start time. But that famous San Diego climate came at a price, with a bright ball of sunlight blinding the crowd — and possibly questioning their outfit choices — as the sea of Vans, Converse and Dr. Martens-wearers searched for their seats.

Perhaps the daytime element served as the biggest disadvantage for Weezer, who took to the stage a full hour before the sun set. To the rock band’s credit, the seats were far more packed than a typical “opener” would draw. (Admittedly, the triple Grammy-award winning band would likely scoff at being referred to as anyone’s opening act.)

Singer Rivers Cuomo and drummer Patrick Wilson of Weezer

Be it the daytime backdrop or a concerted effort to save energy, the audience reacted casually to Weezer’s performance; aside from those donning “Weezer” t-shirts, listeners mostly stayed seated, approvingly nodding or swaying in their seats. Hits like “Buddy Holly” and “Pork and Beans” picked up steam, and try-hardfront man Rivers Cuomo’s audience pandering — such as changing a lyric in “Beverly Hills” to “livin’ in San Diego” — were received well.

Weezer’s ego may have taken a bit of a blow when the audience participation soared to a song that wasn’t even its own, but its radio-friendly cover of “Africa” by Toto. The crowd also went wild to a single line in “El Scorcho.”After Cuomo belted the lyrics, “I asked you to go to the Green Day concert,” the band took a dramatic pause, followed by the Jumbotron zooming in on a fan’s Green Day shirt before panning to the rest of the now-standing crowd.

The sun finally dipped under the stands just as Weezer wrapped the last song of its one-hour set. A half hour later, Fall Out Boy was greeted by the excitement of nightfall paired with flames blasting from the stage. Dressed casually — aside from the shirtless, tattoo-clad drummer Andy Hurley, the band donned black t-shirts and hoodies — the four-piece proved looks can be deceiving, delivering a solid performance that was far from sloppy.

As expected, fangirls swooned for Wentz, who received more name chants and crowd asides than lead singer Patrick Stump. But if the other band members took offense, they didn’t let it show. The crowd returned the energy Fall Out Boy delivered; dedicated fans stayed standing throughout the set, while those sitting sang along to the set list that spanned more than a decade, rarely missing a beat.

Post Fall Out Boy, the surprisingly-patient audience was rewarded with a two-song crowd energizer. Speakers started blaring Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and the Jumbotron plastered faces of screaming, singing and smiling faces. Then came the most bizarre appearance of the night — an unknown person dressed in a bunny costume, who chugged a beer before leading the crowd in “Blitzkrieg Bop” by the Ramones.

A pink bunny on stage before Green Day plays

Any speculation about which act the sold-out crowd was there to see washed away once Green Day stepped onto the stage. In unison, the entire audience rose to its feet and stayed standing for the nearly two-hour set.

Yet it didn’t seem like the crowd’s energy was enough for 49-year-old frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who performed like he was still in his 20s. Acting almost as a cult leader, he made constant demands on the crowd, which obeyed without question. Per his orders, the crowd agreed to “go crazy,” from jumping to “Know Your Enemy” to putting their “f—ing hands up in the air” during “American Idiot.” Armstrong even convinced everyone to shine their phone lights during “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” — illuminating Petco Park enough to turn off all the stadium lights.

Despite his demands, Armstrong’s orders carried no animosity. The band’s intense feelings of appreciation permeated the performance, giving the audience star treatment and delivering 110 percent for every song in the iron-clad set. From the sweat dripping off the band members’ hands during “Wake Me Up When September Ends” to Armstrong shining a physical spotlight on the crowd during “Holiday,” it was clear that for Green Day, the fans come first. (One fan was even invited on stage to perform a guitar solo for “Knowledge,” a song by Operation Ivy, and was then allowed to keep the guitar.)

“It’s been a long year but we’re still alive,” Armstrong told the audience, his voice bleeding with sincerity, before easing into the band’s 2016 hit “Still Breathing.”

A large burst of confetti, fireworks display and a fittingly titled encore, “Time Of Your Life” closed the six-hour evening. After the COVID-19 shutdown starved these rock fans of live music for over a year, Green Day, Weezer and Fall Out Boy delivered on their promise for a Hella Mega, time of their lives.

Green Day, Weezer, Fall Out Boy Launch ‘Hella Mega’ With Epic, Emotional Dallas Concert

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Just two songs into Green Day ’s headlining set at the Hella Mega tour launch at Arlington, Texas’s Globe Life Field, Billie Joe Armstrong asked for the houselights to be turned on so he could see the roughly 35,000 people in the audience. This was quite possibly the largest rock audience that had assembled anywhere in the world since the start of the pandemic, and he wanted to bask in their glow.

“Take a look around you,” he said. “This is human contact. We cannot be locked up anymore. We need to be together.”

It was a sentiment shared by every performer throughout the five-and-a-half hour concert, which also featured the Interrupters, Weezer , and Fall Out Boy , and it was almost enough to make you forget that the Delta variant is causing infection spikes all over America, mask mandates are returning, and the future is suddenly feeling very uncertain again. But the youthful crowd seemed unbothered by this, and masks were worn by no more than one out of every 300 people.

Covid issues aside, the show was wildly entertaining and well worth the nearly two-year wait fans have had to endure since the initial tour announcement . Like a 2005 iPod set to shuffle, it veered from “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” to “Beverly Hills” to “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” and since none of the artists have been on the road since in over a year and a half, they all had energy of racehorses freed from their starting gates.

After a quick opening set by the L.A. ska punk band the Interrupters, who won over the crowd with their unique take on Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy,” Weezer came out. It was hard to recognize Rivers Cuomo for a moment because of his new mustache and mullet look, not to mention his studded leather jacket that shows he’s really embracing this whole Van Weezer era.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

The early part of their set was heavy on new songs like “Hero,” “All The Good Ones” and “The End of the Game,” a bold move for a stadium show, but the opening notes of “My Name is Jonas” triggered a flood of classics like “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Surf Wax America” and “Island In The Sun.” No matter how many times they’ve played them over the years, they always work.

“El Scorcho” generated some of the loudest cheers of the night thanks to the line about asking a girl out to a Green Day concert, and the inevitable “Africa” came not longer after it. Cuomo got a little confused when he got to the “I stopped an old man along the way” part and started just muttering “blah blah blah.” Perhaps the fact that Weezer’s biggest hit in years is a novelty cover of a 1982 Toto song has left him less than thrilled. The audience took over until the recovered on the chorus. After the live debut of “California Snow,” they ended with singalong renditions of “Say It Ain’t So” and “Buddy Holly.”

Fall Out Boy are the slight odd ones out on the bill since they weren’t graduates from the MTV class of 1994 like Weezer and Green Day, which Pete Wentz acknowledged midway through their set. “Imagine what a mind fuck this is for our band,” he said. “Our band is so influenced by these bands that to be on a stadium tour with them is absolutely mind-blowing. Dream big, you know what I mean?”

They certainly dreamed big with the stage show, which included more pyro than your typical Kiss concert, including flames that shot directly out of Wentz’s bass during their opening number of “The Phoenix.” And when Patrick Stump sat down at the piano to sing “Save Rock and Roll,” that burst into flames as well. There was also a video intro by actor Ron Livingstone that he delivered like Rod Serling of The Twilight Zone.

Their set featured just a single song from 2018’s Mania (“The Last of the The Real Ones”) and was instead a journey through their hits, including relatively recent ones like “Uma Thurman” and “Centuries” and vintage ones like “Dance, Dance” and “A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More Touch Me.” The younger members of the crowd sang along to every word, while the older ones sipped their beers and looked on respectfully.

Fall Out Boy wasn’t a band that seemed built for the long run when they broke big with teens in 2005. And when they took an indefinite break in 2009, it was easy to imagine them going the way of Gym Class Heroes. But they had one of the most surprisingly successful second acts in rock history, and this tour could be the start of a third one since it is basically establishing them as a classic rock group. Who would have guessed?

By the time Green Day took the stage, the sun was down and the crowd was primed for the main event. An explosive “American Idiot” got things started, and they kept the intensity up by going right into “Holiday” and “Know Your Enemy.” Their album Father of All… hit just a little over a year ago, but they didn’t play a thing from it. It was instead classics like “Longview,” “Welcome to Paradise” and “Brain Stew,” and they caused the GA area near the stage to erupt into a giant mosh pit straight out of 1994. A large group of bros even ripped their shirts off and started slamming into each other and everyone near them, letting off 18 months of lockdown steam in a few crazed minutes of Dookie chaos.

Selections from American Idiot were sprinkled through the entire set, including an epic “Jesus of Suburbia” and a moving “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” These songs were written for the George W. Bush era, but they don’t seem like relics in any way. We’ve only grown more idiotic as a nation since W’s term ended, and these songs are now timeless anthems.

Near the end, they broke out “Still Breathing” from 2016’s under-appreciated Revolution Radio . It’s about finding meaning in life after difficult times, and it had a newfound resonance in the Covid era. “I’m like a soldier coming home for the first time,” Armstrong sang. “I dodged a bullet, and I walked across a landmine/Oh, I’m still alive.”

It was a joy to sing along with those words, and it was a joy to experience live rock and roll in a stadium after all this time. We don’t know what the next few months may hold, but at least for one glorious night, we were all still breathing, and still singing.

Weezer Hella Mega tour

When live performance creative duo Tawbox got the call to pitch stage design ideas to Weezer for their Hella Mega tour with Green Day and Fall Out Boy, they knew they had to pull out all the stops.

“It’s literally my favorite artists on a tour together, with one of them asking us to do something, so it was a no-brainer to put something together for it,” says Bronski, who founded Tawbox in 2012 along with partner Amber Rimell.

Since its inception, Tawbox has put together some of the most unique and daring live performances, including Stormzy’s iconic 2019 Glastonbury set, which earned the duo a BAFTA nomination for best entertainment craft team. Other notable credits include Olivia Rodrigo’s performance at the 2021 Brit Awards and Miley Cyrus’ rendition of the Beatles’ “Help!” during Global Citizen’s 2020 fundraiser. But despite all of their success, Tawbox had never put together a performance for a rock group.

“It’s quite funny — we’d never done rock music,” Bronski says. “We’re so pop music in what we do, generally. But my roots, personally, are so teenage fucking punk-rock kid.”

Bronski first saw Weezer live at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in 2002, but never would have imagined he would be creative-directing one of their tours. “I wouldn’t have even said that five years ago, let alone 20 years ago,” Bronski laughs. “I mean, they often say ‘don’t meet your heroes,’ but this was an exception to that.”

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the Hella Mega tour was meant to align with Weezer’s 15th studio album, “Van Weezer.” When the start of the tour was inevitably delayed from March 2020 to July 2021, “Van Weezer” was pushed back as well, finally being released just before the rescheduled dates on May 7. Bronski and Rimell took the aesthetic and hard rock sound of the album and ran with it, creating an on-stage spectacle fit for only the most committed of rock gods. Accordingly, they found the bulk of their inspiration in the album’s namesake, Van Halen .

“We were kind of just like, ‘Let’s Van Everything,'” Bronski says. “There’s an amazing picture of Eddie in front of a huge stack of his guitar amplifier cabs that he just had out in a promo, so that was a big inspiration, and also in terms of the drum kit as well.”

The resulting original design included massive stacks of amplifier cabs, three huge lightning bolts in the middle of the stage, and a large drum riser with six kick drums spelling out “Weezer.”

“We put a quote at the beginning [of the pitch] to get attention. It literally said, ‘How many fucking kick drums do you want?'” Bronski recalls. Weezer — frontman Rivers Cuomo, drummer Patrick Wilson, guitarist Brian Bell and bassist Scott Shriner — were immediately all for the idea. Cuomo even took the ethos a step further, revealing a mullet at the tour’s first show in Arlington, Texas, and playing with a Jackson King V guitar.

With all the original renderings in black-and-white, the biggest aspect Weezer itself contributed was the stage’s color palette, according to Bronski.

“The guys really loved the idea of bringing color, and to be honest, that was a good thing,” Bronski says. “One thing that’s really hard with daylight shows — which essentially all of the Hella Mega tour is for Weezer — is the fact that when you’ve got sunlight blaring on your stage, it doesn’t make things look pretty, necessarily. So having a colorful set really works.”

The colors they settled on played further on the stage’s ’80s aesthetic: bright teal, deep purple and muted cherry red with hints of salmon pink. These colors also carried over to the video component of the performance, because as Bronski points out, having black pixels on a video screen during the daylight ends up looking “brown and mushy.”

“We were very bold and just literally used every single pixel on that big screen all the way through just to have it look super-sharp and clean,” Bronski says. “But when it came to the actual visuals themselves, we just played around with some of the elements that we thought were interesting. So for ‘Surf Wax America’ we got the band made up as 8-bit characters from a video game, all surfing along doing little tricks along the way. For ‘Buddy Holly,’ we just literally took the glasses and made them larger than life.”

Indeed, “larger than life” seems to be the theme of the overall creative direction for Weezer’s Hella Mega set. And since the tour was pretty much ready to go before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, there weren’t many changes to that philosophy or the design itself.

“In terms of the ethos of what the Hella Mega Tour is, it’s supposed to be a big party night of rock music with three of the most insane bands altogether in stadiums, with all fans of all bands just getting a ridiculous show, and I don’t think that changed at all,” Bronski says.

However, one roadblock the pandemic threw Tawbox’s way was travel — meaning that Bronski has not been able to actually see a show live. “Fortunately, the first show of the tour, someone actually streamed the whole thing off their phone on YouTube Live, but I was getting sent videos and pictures and new drawings,” Bronski says of working remotely. “I was very much there in spirit.”

As the Hella Mega tour heads to the U.K. and Europe in summer 2022, Bronski is looking forward to seeing his work come to life right in front of his eyes.

“What I think we all love about Weezer is the commitment and the ridiculous songwriting,” Bronski muses. “An hour-long Weezer show goes so fast. There’s so many huge, huge songs — and there’s songs missing; you can’t even do them all.”

2021 Hella Mega dates finalized

The official website for the Hella Mega Tour has posted new dates for the postponed North American leg of the tour today. The shows have all been rescheduled for the summer of 2021.

The tour had previously announced that dates in the UK and Europe would take place in June of 2021.

The new dates in North America were kept as close as possible to what they were previously scheduled for in 2020, with the tour now kicking off in Seattle on July 14, 2021, as opposed to its previous start date of July 17, 2020.

All the artists previously scheduled for the tour will be returning for the rescheduled dates. The tour will be headlined by Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer with the Interrupters providing support.
