My partner and I have just finished an 8 month trip around the world ticking off 30 countries across Europe, Africa and Asia. Africa has always been a dream but we were a bit worried about spending such a long time with a tour company as we enjoy our independence. The tents easily became our home with comfy bed mats, the food was delicious and plentiful, the tour leader made our time special, and there were so many activities to suit everyone. The type of people that travel with Absolute Africa are like minded and you soon develop some amazing friendships. I can't speak highly enough of this 73 day tour and would recommend to all.

We got the most memorable experience of nature in Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo National parks and most especially Bwindi Forest where we physically saw gorillas. This was our first experience to travel to Africa and with the uncertainties the Covid pandemic had impacted on the travel industry, we are thankful to Mukisa Safaris because they exceeded our expectations in the way they organized our holiday. We’re thankful to our guide Mable and driver John. They were so friendly, knowledgeable about their country with all that is contained therein that we needed to know. 4 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking, Chimps, Big 5 & Big Cats Safari

Not really knowing what to expect on this adventure, we were happy we chose this itinerary. It was fast pace but with enough time to rest between events. What a unique experience to see the gorillas and chimps in their natural habitat. The trekking guides took great care of us, gave us the information and support we need for a successful trek. We never felt unsafe during our treks. Our Devine African Safari private guide; Emma was fantastic, professional and personable. He made sure we were where we needed to be on time, thought ahead to ensure trip details went accordingly, gave us useful information throughout the trip, and overall was just a pleasure to have guide us. Travel distance from Entebbe to the trekking location is quite far but the scenery is unique and something to behold. Stopping at the Equator for photos and lunch at a local spot was a nice treat. The people of Uganda were very pleasant, calm, and inviting. We would definitely recommend this trip, Devine African Safari, and Emma to future travelers.

16 Days of Intensive Adventurous Safari through Magical Uganda and Rwanda ( Private tour)

I had the most incredible experience with Mukisa Safaris. This was a solo adventure 23 day slightly customized tour of Uganda and Rwanda, where I wanted to spend a few extra days driving around Rwanda on top of an all-encompassing tour of Uganda. From first contact with Richard, everything was handled completely professionally and seamlessly, and responses and tour modifications were sent over almost immediately, as I fine tuned my trip, which really help plan (they can do economy / premium accommodation options, as well as customizing your tour exactly how you want) After being picked up from the airport, everything was handled to such perfection, and I felt completely safe the entire time, while we toured the most remote parts of the countries, exploring wildlife, rural villagers, and much more. All hotel bookings and transportation was handled by Mukisa, and I didn’t have to do a thing. We had a tour of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Kidepo Valley, Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi, village tours, a 8 day hike in the Rwenzori mountains, and a few days in Rwanda to relax at the Lake Kivu and explore a bit more. My main goal was wildlife photography, and the vehicle was perfectly equipped having an open top for safaris. I captured some amazing shots of lions in trees, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, gorillas, chimpanzees, and local culture. They say Uganda has the Big 7 :) - add Gorillas and Chimpanzees My guides were Giraffe and Solomon. They were an absolute pleasure to have as companions for 23 days, having vast knowledge of the countries, national parks, culture, where to eat, and always providing insightful commentary as we traversed the lands. We always stopped over at great places to eat that accommodated an international diet, instead of packed lunches, however you can eat anywhere if you like. Any personal requests I had were always remembered, such as getting photos of certain subjects or areas, or searching for certain foods (Samosas are my favorite). Water always in the car, and they even a travel adapter for the Rwanda power plugs, which I didn’t think about. So much appreciated was having 4G internet the whole time via hot spot. You can drive up to 8 hours some days and the internet was always reliable and fast! I cannot recommend Mukisa Safaris enough, they can completely customize any kind of trip you would like, are so hospitable, and I left Uganda with some of my favorite travel memories ever. And on top of that I now consider them as friends and family. I will definitely return! Uganda, as they say, The Pearl of Africa, is the most beautiful country to explore, and Mukisa Safaris made it the most enjoyable experience!

Gorilla Habituation Experience

Bwindi forest is the only place in Africa where one can have a Gorilla Habituation Experience . There isn’t a specific definition of Gorilla Habituation Experience. However, it can literally be explained as a process of training wild Mountain Gorillas to get used to the presence of human beings. 

The process involves a team of individuals like trackers, researchers, conservationists, and rangers who take 2-3 years to have a group of Mountain Gorillas fully habituated. During the process, the team visits these wild Gorillas each day and each individual Gorilla is given a name.  After the wild Gorilla Habituation process, the group is put through a mock exercise where a few people visit the Gorillas.

Gorilla flying Safaris are specific holidays where connection to the park is by flight. Uganda Gorilla safaris by flight start from Kajjansi airfield or Entebbe International Airport to any of the three airstrips close to Bwindi and Mgahinga. In the northern sector are Kihiihi and Kayonza airstrips and Nyakabande in the southern sector for tourists trekking the Nkuringo sector. Flights by Aerolink Uganda take about 1 h 45 m from Entebbe International Airport.

Gorilla Trekking From Kigali

Mountain Trekking Gorillas in Uganda is done in the two national parks of Bwindi and Mgahinga both situated southwest of the country. These are both at the border with Rwanda. It’s just about 4 hour drive from Kigali-Rwanda to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and just 3 hours to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park .

This is a shorter distance than that of Kampala-Uganda’s capital to Bwindi or Mgahinga which is about an 8–9 hours road drive. If you do not want to spend a whole day on a road drive and another to return, then starting and ending your trip from Kigali is a perfect option. Fortunately, Kigali International Airport has daily international flights, and therefore easy to have a short gorilla safari to Uganda from Kigali.

Is gorilla trekking better in Uganda or Rwanda?

In terms of drive distance, Rwanda being a small country geographically, it takes only 3 hours to access the gorilla park (Volcanoes National Park) from Kigali airport on a smooth road; whereas it takes about 5 hours from Kigali to Bwindi national park in Uganda. If one is to begin the tour from Entebbe airport, it would take more than 8 hours to get to the park.

In terms of gorilla tracking experience, both countries are the same since they share similar features – they both belong to the Virunga Coservation Area and owing their originality to the same tectonic forces that form the mighty Virunga Massif with a rich biodiversity.

Is it safe to trek gorillas in Uganda?

Uganda is the cheapest safari destination in East Africa. Apart from a gorilla permit that costs USD 700, with a minimum of USD 100 each person per day can suffice. A safari in Uganda can be a day to 24 days depending on how you wish a safari to be customized for you.

What is the best time to track gorillas?

Gorillas can be visited any time of the year. However the dry months of June, July, August and early September; and December to February are the best period of the year. During the rainy season March to May, and October to December, roads tend to be destroyed by floods; and in the park being tropical rainforests, rain is quite unpredictable thus making a gorilla safari albeit expensive, becoming a nightmare!

What is gorilla habituation experience?

Gorilla Habituation Experience (Gorilla Habituation experience) is the activity where tourists are allowed to spend 4 hours with the gorillas as they immerse in all activities the gorillas undertake on a particular day. This experience is only organized in Rushaga sector of Bwindi national park in Uganda. When a guest books this Gorilla habituation Experience the funds are utilized in promoting the gorilla conservation efforts.

What is the minimum age for gorilla tracking?

In Uganda the minimum age for gorilla and golden monkeys trekking is 15 years; and for chimpanzee tracking 12 years. In Rwanda, gorilla tracking minimum age is 15, so is the hike to Dian Fossey’s tomb; and 10 years for golden monkeys tracking.

In Uganda, if the child is below age and is keen to track gorillas, the adult guardian or parent must sign a document by Uganda Wildlife transferring all risk on him or her.

What is the minimum number of people allowed to track a gorilla family?

Only 8 people are allowed to track a gorilla family per a day. Where the number exceeds 8, there must be exceptional cases and Uganda Wildlife Authority senior park warden has to explain the reason for that.

For Gorilla Habituation Experience, only 4 persons are allowed to track a gorilla family. It is one of the reasons why a permit for this activity is as costly as USD 1500 per person.

What are the chances of seeing gorillas?

There are over 97% chances of seeing the gorillas. The reason is that an advance team of rangers, on a daily basis, follow up the gorillas and can ably tell their movements. In the last 12 years we’ve been in operation (Gorilla Trek Africa Ltd), we have not witnessed any incidence of our clients missing gorillas.

When should i book a gorilla safari?

At Gorilla Trek Africa Ltd, we advise our potential guests 4 months before traveling with us at least to pay a deposit that can buy a gorilla permit and pay the rest of the balance 2 weeks to the travel date. Gorilla permits sell out very fast as they are on a very high demand.

Where do gorilla tours take place

Mountain Gorilla tours take place in only two locations in the world, that is in the Virunga Mountains that straddle the borders of Rwanda, Uganda & Congo and in Bwindi impenetrable national park in southwest Uganda. Mountain gorillas survive only in the wild and cannot be found in any zoo anywhere in the world. The montane rainforests in these two locations are the ideal habitats for these endangered subspecies and therefore the only place where they can be found. In addition to Bwindi, there are 3 national parks within the Virunga Mountains that protect mountain gorillas namely; Volcanoes national park in Rwanda, Virunga national park in DR Congo and Mghainga gorilla national park in Uganda. The gorilla census of 2018 indicated that there were 1,064 mountain gorillas living in the wild though their number is likely to have increased since then. Bwindi impenetrable national park protects the highest number of mountain gorillas with about 450 of them followed by Volcanoes national park in Rwanda with about 350 while Virunga national park in Congo has about 200 animals.

Which destination is the best for gorilla tours?

The gorilla trekkin g experience is breathtaking and intriguing regardless of the destination where it may take place. Mountain gorillas share 98% of the human DNA and exhibit the same behaviour wherever they are found just like human beings. However, there a few factors that make one gorilla trekking destination more or less favourable to the travellers. These include cost of the gorilla tour, distance travelled from the airport to the park, standard of accommodation facilities, transport network, security, among others. In terms of cost, Rwanda is considered to be the most pricy with her gorilla permit sold at $1,500 per person. The country is also striving to be a high end tourist destination with several luxurious lodges and hotels already in place. Uganda’s gorilla permit is sold at $700 per person to foreign nonresidents, $600 to foreign residents in East Africa and Uganda Shillings 250,000 to East African residents. Congo’s gorilla permit is the cheapest at $400 per person although the country is less popular for gorilla tours due to the civil conflict in the eastern part of the county where mountain gorillas are found. Rwanda has the easiest accessibility to the gorilla park as it only takes visitors less than 3 hours to drive from Kigali International Airport to Volcanoes national park in the northwest.  This is far faster compared to over 10 hours driven from Entebbe International Airport to Bwindi in Uganda. It is also worthy noting that many travellers trek gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi impenetrable national park while coming from Rwanda because it is more easily accessed from Kigali rather than Kampala. Unlike DR Congo, both Rwanda and Uganda are politically stable and travellers are assured of safety while on their gorilla trekking tours and other safaris.

Best season for gorilla tours

Although mountain gorillas are visited throughout the year, the best time to enjoy the breathtaking gorilla trekking experience is the dry season between June to September and December to February. Mountain gorillas live at high altitude in rugged montane rainforests which can be so difficult to trek in wet season through due to slippery and muddy conditions caused by heavy rains. Gorillas tend to be very difficult to find in rainy days since they tend to stay at one place for a long time whereas they roam freely in their habitat during warm days hence very easy to find. However, regardless of the season, travellers who want to trek gorillas are always encouraged to pack important gear like rain jackets and hiking boots since it may rain anytime in these gorilla trekking parks.

Gorilla permits

A gorilla permit is the primary requirement for those intending to visit mountain gorillas. The issuance of gorilla permits is highly regulated due to the need to enhance gorilla conservation in all the 3 countries. Only 8 permits are issued per day to trek a habituated gorilla family, meaning that only 8 visitors are permitted to visit a gorilla family per da. The easiest way to acquire a gorilla permit is by booking online through a credible tour agent. After receiving the booking fee, the agent goes ahead to buy the permit from the issuing authority on behalf of the client. Due to the limited issuance of gorilla permits, travellers are recommended to book for gorilla tours at least 6 months in advance in order not to miss out on this lucrative and adventurous encounter. Before entering the jungle to search for mountain gorillas, trekkers are first briefed about the dos and donts of gorilla trekking which are simply guidelines for the exercise. These were drafted by conservation authorities to ensure that the welfare of the gorillas is prioritised to enable continue to thrive in their natural habitat. This is very important especially when you consider the fact that mountain gorillas were at the brink of extinction a few decades ago. Limiting human interference is therefore one of the ways the animals can helped to live healthy and free in their natural habitats. Among the major rules include limiting the number of visitors per gorilla group to 8 per day and restricting the time visitors spend in the presence of gorillas to one hour. National parks for gorilla tours

There are four national parks where gorilla tours take place namely; Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park in southwest Uganda, Volcanoes national park in northwest Rwanda and Virunga national park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Bwindi protects the highest number of mountain gorillas and perhaps the most popular destination for gorilla tours. The park has over 20 habituated gorilla families that can be visited by trekkers every day and meeting these gentle giants here is almost certain for every visitor. Volcanoes national park in Rwanda has 12 habituated gorilla families, Virunga national park in DR Congo has 8 while Mgahinga in Uganda has one family which visits the park periodically and then returns to Rwanda. What to pack for gorilla tours

Gorilla trekking is a unique experience that takes place in dense jungles of montane rainforests and therefore requires some special gear for a successful experience. Conditions in the parks such as regular rains, muddy and steep terrain, nestles and thorns in the woods make it important for travellers the necessary gear for the gorilla trekking encounter. Some of the most important items among the gorilla trekking gear include hiking boots, pair of gloves, pair of khaki trousers, long-sleeved shirt and a rain jacket. Other important items for gorilla trekking such as drinking water, packed lunch and snacks, and a walking stick are provided to the trekkers by their lodge of accommodation.

Gorilla families

Just like humans, gorillas live in social families of related members with almost the same organisation like their human counterparts. A typical gorilla family is composed of the leading alpha male known as a silverback, several females, infants and several juveniles. In terms of numbers, there are some gorilla families that have been recorded with as low as 2 members while others have got as many as 30 members. It is worthy noting that apart from the habituated gorilla families that are visited by trekkers in these parks, there are also many others that are are wild or still undergoing process of habituation. Gorilla tours in Rwanda

Gorilla tours in Rwanda are conducted in Volcanoes national park in the northwest, the country’s home to the endangered mountain gorillas. Volcanoes is one of the 3 mountain gorilla habitats found within the Virunga Mountains that lie across the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo. The park has got 12 habituated gorilla families that are visited by trekkers every day with each family visited once per day by a group of 8 tourists. Although Rwanda’s gorilla gorilla permit is the most expensive compared to Uganda and DR Congo, the easy accessibility to the park, good quality accommodation facilities and a good road network make it the most ideal destination for gorilla tours. The gorilla trekking encounter in Volcanoes national park is also considered to be less exhausting because the park’s landscape is not as steep and the vegetation less dense compared to Bwindi in Uganda and Virunga in Congo. Kwita Izina – Gorilla naming ceremony

As part of her gorilla conservation efforts, Rwanda introduced the gorilla naming ceremony in 2005 in which new born gorillas are given names. The ceremony is locally known as ‘Kwita Izina,’ which means giving a name. It was adopted from Rwanda’s old tradition of giving names to newborn babies before a congregation of family and friends. The ceremony is carried out annually in September at Kingi, the headquarters of Volcanoes national park. Over 350 mountain gorillas in Volcanoes national park have been named ever since the ceremony began. Naming infant gorillas helps rangers to easily monitor and protect them as they roam through the park. The practice has significantly enhanced gorilla conservation given the steadily increasing number of mountain gorillas in the park since it was initiated. Uganda gorilla tours

Bwindi impenetrable national park in the southwest is the leading destination for Uganda gorilla tours. The park protects over 450 mountain gorillas, the highest number of the subspecies found in a single habitat. With over 20 habituated gorilla groups available for visiting by, Bwindi receives the highest number of gorilla trekkers of all mountain gorilla parks. Some of the habituated gorilla groups that are regularly visited in Bwindi include Mubare, Rushegura, Bitukura, Nshongi, Nkuringo, Bweza, among others. Gorilla tours in Bwindi take place in four different sectors of the park namely; Rushaga, Ruhija, Buhoma and Nkuringo with gorilla permits allocated to visitors bearing one of these sectors. This is done to ensure responsible tourism in the park and reduce human interference and pressure on some gorilla groups more than others. Many travellers visit Bwindi to trek mountain gorillas via Kigali – Rwanda since it is a shorter distance to reach the park than coming from Kampala or Entebbe International Airport in Uganda. Gorilla tours are also done in Mgahinga gorilla national park though not as common as in Bwindi since the park has got only one gorilla family. Gorilla habituation in Bwindi

Gorilla habituation exclusively takes place in Bwindi impenetrable national park in the southern sector of Rushaga. Gorilla habituation is the process through which wild groups of mountain gorillas are made used to the presence of humans to facilitate tourism and strengthen their protection. During the process, the identified gorilla group is tracked by daily by rangers as they study their behaviour, location and organisation. Only four visitors per day are permitted to take part in the habituation process alongside rangers and trackers. The visitors get chance to spend more time in the company of gorillas unlike the normal gorilla trekking experience whey they are limited to only one hour before the gorillas. When the process is complete, the habituated gorilla group is officially availed for tourism and can be visited by travellers. Visitors who want to take park in the gorilla habituation experience are charged $1,500 per person and they are required to book their permits in advance to facilitate their integration into the process. Gorilla tours in Congo

DR Congo is hugely endowed with a variety of wildlife species and unlike Uganda and Rwanda , the country has got more than one subspecies of gorillas. Congo’s mountain gorillas are found in Virunga national park while the other subspecies of lowland gorillas are found in Kahuzi-Biega national park both located in the east of the country. Gorilla tours are conducted in both parks with travellers able to choose their favourite subspecies for trekking. There are 8 habitauated gorilla families in Virunga national park including Kabirizi, Bageni, Mapuwa, Rugendo, Munyaga, among others. Congo’s gorilla permit is sold at $400 per person and just like in Rwanda and Uganda, travellers wishing t trek gorillas in Congo are encouraged to book in advance.

Gorilla tours in Congo are are less pronounced compared to Uganda and Rwanda due to the political instability in the eastern part of the country, the area around gorilla parks. This makes the area less attractive to visit due to the insecurity that chases away many potential visitors. The gorilla parks in the area are usually closed to tourism during the periods of intense conflicts and occasionally reopened when there is some relative stability. Uganda is home to many different tribal groups, and a wide variety of different customs and traditions can be observed depending on where you travel in Uganda. Spontaneous dance and song is a hallmark of African culture and this is not an exception in Uganda, where tribes and villages will often greet groups of newcomers with rousing song and dance. Greeting others is a very important part of Ugandan culture and not greeting or acknowledging someone you are passing or meeting can be seen as impolite, especially in rural areas and villages. Shaking hands is an appropriate greeting when meeting someone for the first time and often both hands are given for a handshake.

Food or drink is often extended to visitors, even though many Ugandans have very little, and it is viewed as impolite to decline an offer of food or hospitality. Accept willingly and graciously eat or drink what has been offered to you. Generally, most of Uganda’s population lives in rural or regional centres, although urban areas are rapidly expanding and modern influences are infiltrating Ugandan society at a fast rate. With this modernisation, some of the old ways are dying out as younger Ugandans become more adept at using technology, although many still live tribal lives based on hunting and agriculture.

Uganda's Geography and environment

Uganda sits in East Africa and shares borders with Sudan, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Kenya. Despite being landlocked, Uganda still has access to fresh water via surrounding lakes (Lake Victoria, Lake Edward and Lake Albert). As a well-watered country with rich soil, much of Uganda’s land is used for agriculture and cash crops. Coffee, cotton, tea and tobacco plantations are common sights, as are farms of plantains, corn and cassava. The rest of the country is a combination of woodlands, swamp, forest and savanna, as well as pockets of protected nature reserves and national parks.

Shopping in Uganda

Uganda has loads of interesting markets to visit, although many handicraft items are produced in neighbouring Kenya. It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Things to buy in Uganda

1. basketry.

The practise of making traditional baskets is quite developed in Uganda. Choose from assorted shapes – from shallow dish-shaped basketry to deeper bowls and baskets. Materials range from raffia to millet and banana fibre.

2. Paper Beads

Throughout Uganda there are many workshops and organisations that sell beautiful and colourful beaded necklaces made from recycled paper. These creations not only cut down on waste by utilising recycled paper, they also usually provide employment for local women.

3. Bark Cloth

Tribes from South Uganda have been creating bark cloth for centuries, and it’s still available for sale. Nice finds include journals, notepads and photo albums made from a combination of bark cloth and recycled paper.

For Ugandan Christians, Christmas Day is a time of holy reverence and family get-togethers. Most Ugandan’s dress up in their finest attire, go to church for a long service and spend the afternoon and evening eating beef. With many Ugandan’s living simple lives, eating beef is a rare pleasure reserved for Christmas.

A gorilla trekking safari is a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter. Imagine coming eye-to-eye with a mountain gorilla. A big part of what makes the gorilla trek so special is that these big apes are so closely related to humans (the difference in DNA is only about 1.6%). They do seem to touch a nerve when they look at us with interest. The gorillas’ natural habitat is restricted to a relatively small area in a historically turbulent region. Why should I choose a gorilla trekking safari?

“If you love nature and wildlife, a gorilla trekking safari is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed. Coming eye-to-eye with these gentle giants, especially a silverback, is truly unforgettable. Gorilla trekking is more accessible than before. Mountain gorillas can be tracked in three countries: Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The tourism industry in Uganda and, to a lesser extent, Rwanda has blossomed in recent years and these countries have opened up to tourism extensively. Both countries have lots more to offer than gorilla trekking alone, which makes a trip even more worthwhile. Gorillas are highly endangered. So, it is also worth considering that the money you spend on gorilla trekking will be used in the conservation and protection of these great apes.”

How do I choose the best country for a gorilla trekking tour?

“African mountain gorillas have a very small range which extends over three countries: Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC. All three countries offer amazing gorilla trekking experiences, but there are differences. Uganda is most developed for tourism and has the most to offer in addition to gorilla trekking. You can do a safari in Uganda that covers several savannah wildlife reserves, chimp trekking and gorilla trekking. Rwanda, with its turbulent past, offers a similar experience but the cost for gorilla trekking is much higher. However, tourism is less developed away from Volcanoes National Park, the base for gorilla trekking. The DRC also offers great gorilla trekking but has been politically unstable for a long time. Virunga National Park is mostly visited from Rwanda as a quick visit across the border, but it will take time for the park to re-establish itself after the region’s past conflict. The price for gorilla trekking in Uganda is US$700, in Rwanda US$1500 and in the DRC US$400.”

What fitness level is required?

“You will need to be reasonably fit to go gorilla trekking. However, if you really want to do it, you probably could. In Uganda, you book a trek to a particular gorilla group. Gorillas have territories and some groups are known to be easier to visit than others. You can ask your operator to try and get one of the easier groups. Book early to secure this option, though. In Rwanda, travelers are allocated gorilla groups on the day of trekking, but the rangers will try and accommodate elderly or very unfit people, if possible. It is important to wear good hiking shoes and you will be offered a walking stick. It is also recommended to hire a porter who will carry your daypack and help you up the slopes.”

How close can I get to the gorillas?

“You are supposed to observe a minimum distance of 7m/23ft from the gorillas. This is to avoid the possibility of exposing gorillas to human diseases, as well as for your own safety. You will get a full briefing as part of your gorilla watching experience. You will be told how to behave, as well as how not to behave, in front of the gorillas. Your guide will tell you where to stand at the actual sighting. Gorillas, of course, don’t observe rules and might well approach you and come much closer. In most cases, your guide will tell you to back off. Sometimes this isn’t possible, due to dense vegetation for example. If that instance, you will be told to crouch down and divert your gaze until the gorilla has passed.”

How much will a gorilla trekking safari cost?

“Gorilla trekking doesn’t come cheap. The price in Uganda is currently US$700. In Rwanda the price is US$1500 and in the DRC it is a bargain at US$400. This is only the fee for the activity and doesn’t factor in a lot of other costs involved in a safari package. The experience in all three countries is very similar. You can stay one hour with a gorilla troop after you have reached their location. The tour group size is limited to eight people. A new activity offered in Bwindi (Uganda) only is the gorilla habituation experience where you’ll track a semi-habituated troop in a limited group of four travelers. Instead of the one-hour time limit given for the ‘normal’ gorilla trekking, you’ll be able to stay for four hours. Viewing is less easy as these gorillas aren’t fully habituated yet and prefer to keep their distance. The price for this special activity is US$1500. ”

How to add gorilla trekking onto a broader wildlife trip?

“Gorilla trekking is offered as an add-on to a general wildlife tour. The common combination was a safari in Kenya or Tanzania, with add-on gorilla trekking in Rwanda. Rwanda was the country of choice because Volcanoes National Park is very accessible and lends itself to an add-on. The same can be done in Uganda. However, although Bwindi is the most accessible of the two gorilla parks in Uganda, it is a lot more remote. It is therefore less suitable for a quick add-on. In both cases, your operator books local flights and road transfers to your choice of gorilla park. To make the most of the add-on, book extra activities on offer in the gorilla parks, such as volcano hikes, golden monkey trekking and cultural activities. Uganda has developed into a great wildlife destination, and a Ugandan safari package that includes gorilla and chimp trekking is also worth considering. ”

When is the Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking?

The best time  to visit the mountain gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda is during the dry season. The dry season runs from December to March and June to October . During the dry season the trails are drier making gorilla trekking easier. Within the dry season, the mountain gorillas tend to stay at the lower altitudes, making it easier track and find the apes in their natural habitat. If you’re unable to visit during the dry season, don’t worry gorilla treks are possible year-round, and each season offers its own unique advantages.

How Safe is Gorilla Trekking?

Mountain Gorillas in the wild are not considered dangerous, as long as they feel comfortable and relaxed. Although powerful and strong, mountain gorillas have a gentle and shy nature. The mountain gorillas in Uganda & Rwanda, which travelers get to visit, have also become used to the presence of humans. The gorilla habituation process takes close to two years and the habituated gorilla family in particular are considered secure to be around.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you don’t have to be careful and adhere to certain regulations. You must obey all instructions given by your guide. Your Bwindi Guides have a strong knowledge of the gorillas, and will direct you as to where it’s secure to stand or sit.

Is Uganda or Rwanda Better for Gorilla Trekking?

The two most popular destinations for gorilla trekking are Uganda and Rwanda. Both countries host mountain gorillas and the opportunity to see them is equal. Uganda and Rwanda are best the countries for gorilla trekking in Africa because both countries inhabit similar rugged terrain and have similar habitats. Individual mountain gorilla groups vary in their accessibility and that is why it is important to be physically fit.

The regulations and quality of local guides and rangers is similar in Rwanda and Uganda but there are as many factors to consider in picking your location between one of these countries.

Am I Guaranteed to See the Mountain Gorillas?

The chances to meet the mountain gorillas on a guided trek are over 95%. One of the reasons why the chances of seeing mountain gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda is high is that both countries have several gorilla families that are well-habituated and used to the presence of humans. As such, they will not run away in the presence of humans.

Uganda and Rwanda have invested in training their trackers and ranger guides who are in charge of locating these gorillas in the forests and guiding you to where they will be on the day of trekking. Gorillas are the world's largest living primates and share more than 98% of our genetic code, making them one of our closest relatives. They live in troops with complex social structures and exhibit behavior that most of us can recognize from interactions with our own families. Despite (or perhaps because of) the similarities between our species and theirs, all African gorillas are endangered or critically endangered. Pushed to the brink of extinction by habitat destruction, poaching and disease, seeing them in the wild is a privilege that future generations may never have.

This article is not an exhaustive list of all the countries in which gorillas occur; but rather a recommendation of the best places for successful gorilla trekking tours.

Different Types of Gorilla

There are two species of gorilla: eastern gorillas and western gorillas. These two species are divided into subspecies, the most common being the western lowland gorilla, the eastern lowland or Grauer's gorilla and the mountain gorilla. The western lowland gorilla is the smallest, most numerous and most widespread gorilla subspecies. It lives in the lowland forests and swamps of Central Africa, including Cameroon, Gabon, the Central African Republic and the Republic of the Congo. There are around 100,000 western lowland gorillas left in the wild.

The Grauer's gorilla is the largest gorilla subspecies and is only found in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). There are thought to be less than 4,000 living in the mountainous forests of the eastern part of the country. There are even fewer mountain gorillas : just over 1,000 individuals divided into two separate populations. One is found in the Virunga Mountains (accessible from Rwanda, Uganda or the DRC) and the other is confined to Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Wherever you choose to go gorilla trekking, it's important to remember that you will have to work hard to find the troops and sightings are never guaranteed. All gorilla species have learned to stay as far away from humans as possible, and the journey to find them usually involves several hours of hiking through dense vegetation. Expect plenty of waiting around and be prepared for stinging insects and extreme heat. Habituated troops are used to human visitors, though, so when you do find them you will be able to get quite close—allowing for an incredible encounter that makes the effort of getting there well worth it.

Rules & Regulations

Because gorillas are so vulnerable, human interactions are strictly regulated to minimize impact and ensure the safety of everyone involved. You will need a gorilla trekking permit (your tour operator should organize this for you—expect it to cost anywhere from $400 in the DRC to $1,500 in Rwanda). Only a certain number of daily permits are granted for each location, so it's a good idea to book as far in advance as possible. Regulations may differ slightly from country to country, but generally resemble the following guidelines from the Rwanda Development Board:

• To minimize possible transmission of human diseases, visitors are asked to maintain a distance of 7m (about 22 feet) from the gorillas. If you are sick with a cold, flu or other contagious illness, please do not visit the gorillas.
• Viewing time is limited to one hour.
• Maximum 8 visitors per group.
• Spitting in the park is strictly prohibited.
• Should you need to cough, cover your mouth and turn away from the gorillas.
• When with the gorillas, keep your voice low.
• Try not to make rapid movements that may frighten the gorillas.
• If a gorilla should charge or vocalize at you, do not be alarmed, stand still, look away from the gorilla and follow your guide’s directions.
• Do not litter.
• Do not use flash photography.
• Tracking can be done by persons of age 16 and above.

Best Places to See Mountain Gorillas

There are two locations for gorilla trekking in Uganda. The first and most popular is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park . This UNESCO-recognized reserve covers 321 square kilometers of dense, mist-filled rainforest thought to be over 25,000 years old. It is home to approximately half of the world's mountain gorilla population, including nine trackable or habituated troops.

The second, less-frequented option is Mgahinga Gorilla National Park , located in the extreme southwest corner of the country on the slopes of the Virunga Mountains. It shares borders with Rwanda and the DRC and with a total area of just under 34 square kilometers, is Uganda's smallest national park. It is home to one habituated gorilla troop.

Visitors to Rwanda can track gorillas in Volcanoes National Park . Located in the northwest of the country, the park spans 160 square kilometers of the Virunga Mountains and is famous as the place where gorilla scientist Dian Fossey worked and died. The forest is easier to navigate than Bwindi and there are 10 habituated gorilla troops to look for.

Best Places to See Grauer's Gorillas

Democratic republic of congo.

Rwanda and Uganda are safer choices for those wanting to see mountain gorillas, but the DRC is the only option for those in search of the endemic Grauer's gorilla. They inhabit primary tropical forests in the east of the country and are most reliably spotted in Kahuzi-Biega National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Maiko National Park .

Best Places to See Western Lowland Gorillas

Republic of congo.

Located in the north of the country, Odzala-Kokoua National Park was once home to more than 22,000 western lowland gorillas. The population was decimated by an ebola outbreak in the early 2000s but has since recovered so that the park remains the number one destination for spotting this species. There are two troops that can be tracked by tourists.

Gabon has lowland gorilla populations in many of its 13 national parks. The first park to attempt the habituation of a gorilla troop was Moukalaba-Doudou National Park, and tourists can now track them deep into the forest on foot. Gorilla trekking is an adventurous experience which entails traversing through thick forests in search of endangered mountain gorillas.

Gorilla trekking was not popular in East Africa until 1980s when Diane Fossey, a renowned conservationist and researcher initiated a proposal for the activity arguing that there were about 250 mountain gorillas living in the Virunga massif. Gorillas were critically endangered at that time due to the threats of human activities, like poaching, encroachment on natural habitats for purposes of settlement and agriculture.

Gorilla trekking was adopted in East Africa in the Virunga massif to help collect funds to support mountain gorilla conservation and reduce the negative impacts of human activities on the habitat of the gorillas.

Gorilla habituation started in Uganda and Rwanda in early 1990s by the conservationists with support from respective governments and international conservation bodies. Uganda had the first gorilla family – Mubare habituated in 1990 and was open for trekking in 1993. Habituation activities continued in the rest of the conservation area and today gorilla tourism is the leading tourist activity in Uganda and Rwanda.

Facts About Mountain Gorillas

Mountain gorillas are unique primates and have exciting facts..

There are only 1063 mountain gorillas left in the world today. these mountain gorillas can be found in the virunga conservation area in the east of africa.

Mountain gorillas live in isolated families. these mountain gorilla families are in a form of a human extended family kind of setting.  they are comprised of the dominant silverback – who has the overall responsibility of taking care of the rest of the family members, female adults responsible for taking care of the juveniles and infants.

Mountain gorillas share about 98% of the human dna. this partly explains the resemblance in the limbs and the high level of intelligence the gentle giants showcase.

Mountain gorillas are the biggest and most powerful living primates on the planet. male mountain gorillas have a standing height of 161 to 170 centimeters, a girth of about 138 to 163 centimeters, arm length of 2 to 2.8 meters and weight of about 120 to 191 kilograms. females on the other hand are smaller with a weight of about 70 to 98 kilograms.

Mountain gorillas make themselves comfortable beddings every night. they usually make them from roots, leaves and grasses that they get from the forest to make themselves have a cozy night.  they showcase a high level of love for comfort similar to that of human beings.

They can eat all day long. mountain gorillas feed on bamboo shoots, roots of plants, fruits and they also have an appetite for ants and some invertebrates. they usually dig grounds as they look for the invertebrates and ants.

Mountain gorillas are critically endangered species.  they have over the years first day wrath of human beings and some have succumbed to activities such as poaching and encroachment on their habitat for establishments of settlements and farming purposes.

What is the best time to do gorilla tracking?

Gorilla trekking adventure entails movement through mountainous regions, thick tropical rainforests, crossing streams and walking through valleys before one gets to meet the gorillas. this activity is a bit hectic in the rainy seasons and is characterized by interruptions from rain and slippery grounds.

The dry seasons therefore are the best times in which travelers can embark on gorilla trekking adventures. dry seasons in the virunga massif are categorized into two – long and short dry seasons. the long dry season runs from early june to september and the short dry season is always on from mid-december to early february.

Chimpanzee trekking is done in two shifts that is to say in the morning and afternoon. Budongo forest

Budongo is a mysterious forest in Uganda adjacent to the captivating Murchison Falls National Park. The forest is located on an escarpment in the northeast of Lake Albert and covers parts of the Hoima and Kikuube districts. It is seated on an area of roughly 825 square kilometres, covered with thick rainforests with towering canopies which form a favourable home to the chimpanzees.

Budongo harbours approximately 600 to 700 chimpanzees with 4 chimpanzee habituated communities that are open for tourism activities and others undergoing habituation processes.

Kyambura gorge

Kyambura Gorge is a serene forest perched on the outskirts of the breathtaking Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda. The gorge showcases the beauty of a natural forest engulfed in a valley. The forest therein is a renowned home to chimpanzees with about 80 individuals. There are habituated groups that are up for tracking activities where travellers can have a great time watching the chimpanzees interact in their natural habitat.

Nyungwe forest

The vibrant Nyungwe forest stands out as one of the oldest rainforests on the African continent. This captivating forest covers an area of roughly 1019 square kilometres in the western and southern parts of Rwanda. It is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site harbouring the endangered chimpanzees and their delicate habitat.

The forest is made up of bogs, bamboo and other Afromontane tree species that make a perfect habitat for the chimpanzees. Nyungwe has about 400 chimpanzees with about 60 habituated and ready to be visited.

Price of chimpanzee trekking permits

It is important to remember that for one to have the opportunity to trek the chimpanzees in all the destinations mentioned above, one ought to have fully paid for and obtained a chimpanzee trekking permit from the authorities. The chimpanzee tracking permits are obtained through registered tour operators. Each country has different prices for their trekking permits and they are;

The Ugandan chimpanzee trekking permits in Kibale forest are priced at a non-negotiable fee of $200 for the foreign non-residents, $150 for the foreign residents and Uganda shillings 150,000 for the East African citizens.

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo forest is priced at $120 per person per trek and Kyambura gorge at $50 per person per trek.

Rwanda chimpanzee tracking permits are priced at $150 per person for foreign non-residents, foreign residents and East African citizens.

Tanzania chimpanzee trekking permits on the other hand in Gombe Stream National Park are priced at $100 per person per trek.

The great wildebeest migration is recognized as the most enjoyed, thrilling and breathtaking wildlife event in the whole world. This lifetime activity involves the migrating of animals in a large population following the rain patterns, searching for enough food and drinking water. This interesting wild event only happens in Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and Masai Mara National Park in Kenya.

About 2 million herds of zebras, impalas, wildebeests, Thompson gazelles and grants migrate in a clockwise direction from the southern part of Tanzania in Serengeti National Park to the northern part of Kenya in Masai Mara National Park before returning once again in Serengeti national park.

Right away after the calving season is when the migrating animals kick off their journey and most of the calves are born during this period around the end of February. By April and May, the migrating animals are already heading North before encountering the Grumeti River around June where the aquatic predators are always waiting to feast for a long and this is when the lives of these animals start to face threats.

The migrating animals are forced to congregate first in large numbers so they can all cross the rivers at once. A large number of them can be seen along the banks of the River still plotting on how to survive the death trap as other predators inform of lions and leopards also plan to play fast on them before they can cross the river.

Watching these migrating animals crossing the river is an unequalled experience yet exciting in the end. The animals are seen struggling for their lives as the Nile crocodiles patiently wait underwater for their long-awaited meal. It is at that point where the young and weak migrating animals as a result of long journeys fall into the predator’s teeth that touches the most.

A big number of these migrating animals will survive to their destination and just a few of them fall into the death trap. But as they struggle out of the river, a feeling of relief catches up with the viewers. From July to September, the migrating animals are welcomed in the Masai Mara National Reserve after encountering another death of the River Mara.

The great wildebeest migration is such a not-to-miss wildlife event that gives such an ultimate full wildlife experience. During the peak seasons especially in dry seasons, the tourism destinations of Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara National Reserve are almost inaccessible as visitors from across the world flock to these spots with great wildebeest migration first on their bucket list.

Visitors who wish to be part of this lifetime experience are advised to book in advance so they can get space with accommodation and other neighbouring spots.

Ultimate guide for gorilla trekking in bwindi impenetrable national park.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of only four national parks where one can undertake mountain gorilla trekking in the world.

The other three are Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, also in Uganda.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is renowned for housing half the population of the endangered mountain gorillas.

The name “Bwindi” is derived from the local Runyakitara word “Mubwindi,” meaning “place full of darkness.”

Bwindi Forest is one of the most biologically diverse forests on Earth.

Its significance led to its recognition by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The park is home to 104 species of ferns, 27 species of frogs, 220 species of butterflies, 120 species of mammals, 348 species of birds, 163 species of trees, and 1,000 flowering plants.

Mountain gorillas share 98% of their DNA with humans, making them closely related to us.

They also have unique fingerprints, akin to human thumbprints. Female mountain gorillas undergo a gestation period of 8.5 months and typically give birth to 2-6 offspring in their lifetime.

The park spans an area of 331 square kilometers and is situated on the edge of the Albertine Rift.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Gorilla trekking begins with a permit obtained through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a trusted tour company.

Trekkers are allocated to one of the park’s sectors based on age and physical capabilities.

The trek typically lasts 2-7 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family and the hikers’ pace.

Once the family is located, visitors are allowed one hour with the gorillas. It’s important to adhere to the gorilla trekking rules and regulations.

Gorilla Habituation in Rushaga Sector of Bwindi

Gorilla habituation is the process of acclimatizing mountain gorillas to human presence, typically taking 1-2 years with daily visits by rangers and researchers.

The park offers visitors the chance to join these efforts.

Unlike trekking, where time with gorillas is limited to one hour, habituation allows four hours of interaction.

Birding in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is home to over 359 bird species, including 23 Albertine endemics.

Some notable species include the Red-headed Bluebill, Blue-headed Sunbird, Short-tailed Warbler, Chaplin’s Flycatcher, African Green Broadbill, Shelley’s Crimsonwing, Rwenzori Batis, White-throated Greenbul, Yellow-fronted Canary, Handsome Francolin, Great Blue Turaco, Doherty’s Bushshrike, African Dusky Flycatcher, Double-toothed Barbet, and Black Bee-eater, among others.

Bwindi Gorilla Permits

In Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, gorilla permits must be obtained at least three months in advance of the trekking date.

Permits can be acquired through a trusted tour company or directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Gorilla trekking permits cost $700 per person, and gorilla habituation permits are $1500 per person.

Gorilla Trekking Rules & Regulations

Some of the rules are as follows:

• Time Management is paramount : Gorilla trekking time is scheduled, and missing the appointed date and time means the trekking fee won’t be refunded. Pre-trekking briefing is conducted at daybreak, by 8:30 am; by then, all trekkers must be present, and immediately after that, the experience will begin.
• Disinfect your hands and feet before entering the gorilla territory : This is the first thing done upon entering the park to avoid encountering the apes with contagious illnesses. At any point, you might be tempted to touch the gorillas.
• Keep a 7-meter / 21-feet distance from the gorillas : Standing too close to the Apes endangers them and makes them vulnerable to human illnesses. If they approach you, it is advisable to stay calm and in one place. Mind your own business, and they won’t pose any harm.
• Keep voices as low as possible : The jungle is a silent world, so while tracking the Apes, interactions and inquiries must be done in a hushed tone so as not to disturb the Apes and other primates.
• Only a maximum of 8 people are allowed to track a Gorilla Group per day : This is to avoid damaging the ecosystem, putting pressure on the apes, and providing enough space for all activities.
• Flash cameras are prohibited : When taking photos, it is advisable not to use a flash on the camera since it can disturb the Gorillas, who don’t tolerate it. So, turn off your flashlights while capturing images of the Apes.
• Keep in tight groups and don’t run : While in the jungle or in the presence of the Gorillas, it is advisable to stay in groups and never run, regardless of how the apes behave. Gorillas are harmless to visitors, and keeping in groups helps the rangers monitor everyone.
• Visit the Gorillas only if you are healthy : If you have a cough, flu, or any other illness, it is advisable to stay home. Gorillas are vulnerable to airborne illnesses and can be affected by coughs. However, if it is unavoidable, cover your mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing.
• One hour is the maximum time for watching the apes : To ensure that your presence doesn’t stress the Apes, a maximum of an hour is allocated for photos, questions, and any other interaction with the Gorillas.
• No littering in the Park : Rubbish can be poisonous to the park’s inhabitants and the primates. Human waste is buried on the ground, and items like plastics and polyethylene must not be disposed of in the park; instead, carry them until the end of the tour and dispose of them outside the park.
• Don’t look straight into the eyes of gorillas : Staring deeply into the gorilla’s eyes is seen as an aggressive act and may provoke a charge. Therefore, avoid direct eye contact and concentrate on other aspects.
• A valid Gorilla tracking Permit is compulsory : The cost for permits is $1500 for Rwanda, $700 for Uganda, and $400 for those heading to the Democratic Republic of Congo. The permits are in high demand but available for a maximum of eight persons per day, aged 15 years and above.

Porters have their own prices for their services, usually between $10 to $15, although they can be tipped for providing excellent services.

Gorilla trekking is a thrilling but exhausting exercise that takes place on foot in a dense forest with slopes, thorns, and shrubbery, among other challenges.

After going through this experience together, it’s important to recognize the team’s unwavering commitment and contributions at every turn.

What to do:

It is advisable to wait to tip after the entire trip or gorilla trekking exercise.

Trekking mountain gorillas during the rainy season is one of the most thrilling vacation experiences, yet it is undertaken by only a few privileged individuals globally.

Whether it is done in Bwindi Impenetrable, Mgahinga, Volcanoes, or Virunga National Park, gorilla trekking during the dry seasons is obviously not interrupted by rains.

However, this doesn’t mean that gorilla trekking can’t happen during the wet season.

The good news is that it doesn’t rain throughout the day, and when the rains stop, the activity goes on as planned.

Also, given the high altitudes and thick vegetation of these parks, rain cannot be completely ruled out; hence, intending trekkers are advised to always come prepared.

The dry season experiences little or no rainfall, thus trekking trails are not muddy or slippery during the mentioned months.

Also, park roads and paths are not slippery, hence vehicles can easily go through different areas.

Trails are easier to navigate, thus visitors find it less challenging to ascend and descend mountainous trails to find the gorillas.

It is a known fact that these great apes live in mountainous and forested areas which become difficult to maneuver through, hence requiring basic physical fitness.

The forest is generally not very thick, and temperatures are hotter, which requires trekkers to carry enough drinking water to stay hydrated throughout the trek and have a hat with a wide brim to protect their head from the strong sun heat.

History of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park was initially divided into two blocks of crown forest reserves in 1932, known as the Kayonza and Kasatora Crown Forest Reserves, respectively.

In 1942, these reserves were combined, enlarged, and renamed the Impenetrable Central Crown Forest.

The Impenetrable Central Crown Reserve was redesignated as the Impenetrable Central Forest Reserve and designated as an animal sanctuary in 1964.

The park was expanded again in 1966 to encompass 321 square kilometers.

The reserve was upgraded to a national park in 1991 and renamed Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

The first gorilla trekking activity took place in April 1993. An additional 10 square kilometers were incorporated into the park in 1994, and a further 4 square kilometers in 2003.

A tragic event occurred in 1999 when over 100 former Rwandan Interahamwe guerillas infiltrated the park from the Congo border, kidnapping 14 foreign tourists and one Ugandan guide.

Eight tourists were brutally murdered, one woman was raped, and six were released alive.

The guide was burnt alive.

The park was closed for several months but later reopened. Currently, conditions are stable, and armed rangers accompany tourists during activities.

Location of Bwindi Forest

Bwindi National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, in the Kanungu district.

The drive from Kampala takes approximately 8-9 hours. Alternatively, visitors can take a chartered flight from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kihihi airstrip.

Best Time to Visit Bwindi

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is accessible year-round, but the best months to visit are during the dry seasons from June to August and December to February.

During these periods, trails and roads to the park are in optimal condition.

However, as Bwindi is a tropical rainforest, tourists should be prepared for occasional showers even during the dry season.

Visitors are advised to bring garden gloves, raincoats, long-sleeved warm clothes, sunglasses, hats, insect repellent, and waterproof hiking boots.
