One of the best things about traveling is getting to try new cuisine. Unfortunately, however, I don't have the money or stomach to travel the world and eat bottomlessly. So, I have to live vicariously through these food and travel Instagram accounts.

1. @ Girl Eat World

Melissa, of Girl Eat World,  started to take photos of her food while traveling alone in Europe because she doesn't like selfies and she didn't feel comfortable asking strangers to take her photo. Now she has over 389K followers and is still eating her way through Central and Eastern Europe.

2. @ Food Feels

If you want to travel the world in a matter of days, just follow Food Feels. They've travelled from London to Sydney to Finland. Their photos are always beautifully composed and make your stomach growl at the first glance. Unlike some food accounts that usually post only breakfasts or snacks, Food Feels posts every meal, from every cuisine.

3. @ Rosie Londoner

Rosie is a London-based lifestyle and travel blogger with a passion for delicious food. Her blog  and Instagram are filled with her adventures around England, Europe and the world, and also include some amazing recipes .

5. @ Life & Thyme

Life & Thyme is a food publication all about stories. On their website you can travel the world through powerful stories, like a Syrian refugee family making their refuge camp feel like home through family recipes and  Oaxacan cuisine . Their Instagram is a delightful combination of photos from their stories or reposts from their worldwide community.

6. @ Pissing In The Punch Bowl

Marcus (aka Pissing in the Punch Bowl) is a Brooklyn-based blogger who enjoys trying new foods wherever he goes. His photos are always unparalleled and unlike any other food blogger I've seen.

7. @ Emi Eats

Emi has traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe, and was recently walking the streets of Meereen (aka Croatia). She loves to find new places in her hometown of Chicago and has #BrunchGoals.

8. @ Foodcationing

9. @ Tara Milk Tea

Tara is an Asian-Australian Instagrammer and blogger, who started off her Instagram in 2012 and now has 764K followers. She takes gorgeous photos of the scenery around her and the (sometimes adorable) food she eats.

10. @ Polabur

Polabur is a Russian-based travel Instagrammer, who takes the sweetest photos of her travels and food. She usually takes photos of her breakfasts or desserts, so don't be alarmed if you have serious brunch envy.

11. @ FaimFatale

Deana, the brains behind Faim Fatale, isn't afraid of trying new foods. Her background experience working in the communications field definitely comes through in her writings in her journal and her Instagram photos.

So, the next time you're feeling some serious wanderlust, but can't afford to galavant across Europe, check out one of these food and travel Instagram accounts. They'll satisfy your travel cravings, while giving you some fantastic recommendations for where to eat, once you and your friends can go across the pond.

If food was an Olympic sport, Sicilians would be in first place at all times.

Mel: @girleatworld

View this post on Instagram 🇫🇷 Day 2 of #TastyTravels with @hotelsdotcom in Paris! There are so much good pastry here that I've literally been eating them all day. I was so jetlagged last night that I passed out before the sun even set (which is like at 11pm here!) and consequently woke up very early at 4am. So I took the first metro at 5:45am to Eiffel Tower for sunrise. I arrived at 6am and the place was EMPTY! well, except for couples shooting their bridal photos. And of course I brought my macarons… for breakfast 😂! These are from Pierre Hermé, a crowd's favorite when it comes to macarons in Paris. I got the Rose, Ispahan and Jasmine flavor, also Jardin Andalou (not pictured but it's mandarin orange and raspberry). surprisingly Jasmine was my favorite even though I tend to not like flowery fragrant flavors, but this one was perfect! What I like the most about Pierre Hermé is that the taste of their pastries are not too overwhelmingly sweet. A must try when you are in Paris. #shotoniphone8plus #shotoniphone #eiffel #paris #macaron #pierrehermé #pierreherme #GirlEatParis A post shared by ❤️ Mel's Food & Travel log (@girleatworld) on Jun 27, 2018 at 3:57am PDT

Eva: @evakosmasflores

View this post on Instagram I don't often share the meals that have become a staple of our household on the blog, mainly because I've made them so many times that they've lost that new and shiny sparkle in my mind, and I'd rather try my hand at making and shooting something new. 👩🏻‍🍳 . After having these for dinner every month for well over a year, I've finally gotten around to sharing the recipe with you all on the blog. These Moroccan Meatballs come with a lemony greek yogurt sauce and roasted broccolini, which is also delightfully lemony. Everything is made on a sheet pan in the oven, and takes less than 40 minutes to make from start to finish. 🤩 . The meatballs themselves are packed full of delicious spices and aromatics, savory ground pork or lamb (your choice!), diced onion, and chopped gooey dates that becomes like little caramelized bombs inside each meatball. It's the simplest dinner staple in our house, and also one of the favorites (along with veggie tacos, which I'll share another time). 🧡 . You can grab the recipe via the link in profile, can't wait for you to dive in! 👆🏼 . . . . . . . #firstweeat #eattheworld #heresmyfood #foodandwine #foodiegram #farmfresh #eatpretty #buzzfeedfood #todayfood #farmtofork #recipeoftheday #forkfeed #tastingtable #seriouseats #foodoftheday #insiderfood #lovecooking #homemadefood #lifeandthyme #seasonalfood #feedfeed #foooodieee #drooolclub #food4thought #foodadventure #foodieblog #foragebyfolk #instafood #eatmunchies #fromscratch A post shared by Eva Kosmas Flores 🌿 Photo Food (@evakosmasflores) on May 23, 2019 at 7:16am PDT

View this post on Instagram Notizen📝*(aus meinem Herzen): bin heute aufgestanden, direkt mit Depression, sowie auch die Tage zuvor. Und ich habe geweint. Ja! Allein in dieser Wohnung. ALLEINSEIN. Lieber Herr Schoppe, bitte bitte machen Sie weiter so! 🤭 . . . #schoppebräu#schoppe #schoppebräuberlin #schoppymän #holyshitale #drinkcraftnotcrap #craftbeerporn #beertasting #craftbeertography #beertography A post shared by ¥•🕸 Helena 🕸•¥🔗 (@bier_love) on May 28, 2019 at 4:08am PDT

Shameless plug for my Instagram account because I love to share travel and food! I currently reorganized my highlights to share some of my favorite stories from eating around Slovenia and Ljubljana.

I had fun putting together this list and I am always looking for new authentic accounts to follow. Share yours in the comments and maybe you will see your account on my next list!

Thank you as always for taking the time to read Wandering Helene and keep an eye for an upcoming article this weekend about Easter in Slovenia. I will be learning how to make potica and coloring eggs in the Slovenian way.  -Helene

food and travel instagram

If you check Instagram as much as we do (which might be more than we care to admit), curating the right feed is very important. Whether you're following Instagram influencers or bakers making lattices almost too impressive to eat (we said almost ), it's important to choose accounts that make you happy, and hungry.

But with so many enticing cheese pulls and colorful breakfast bowls out there, figuring out which accounts to follow can be overwhelming. We see it as a Goldilocks test. Does the account post too often that it's annoying or so infrequently that you forget it exists? Is it so aspirational that it makes you kind of hate your life or is it not aesthetically pleasing enough? In order to earn a follow, the account has to be just right .

On top of that, there are new, trendy accounts coming into play all the time. Keeping up with it all can be exhausting. That's where we come in.

[2023 GUIDE] How to Start a Travel Instagram – 8 Tips from a Travel Influencer

*POST SUMMARY: How do you use Instagram for travel ? Tips from a travel influencer who has worked with international tourism boards and luxury hotels – read below!

Starting a travel Instagram has opened my opportunities for travel influencers to travel the world while making money online . But the question still remains, do travel Instagram pages still make money in 2022? The answer is YES! Who would’ve thought like ten years ago that a platform like Instagram could eventually lead people to pursue their passion, such as traveling while earning a full-time income ? The content creators, who have some of the best travel pages on Instagram , generate their income mostly from tourism and brand sponsored content. Today, tourism boards hire Influencers with a trendsetting travel Instagram accounts to promote their country’s tourism spots.

According to a  National Geographic  report, travel influencers provide an incredible amount of investment when it comes to promoting tourism.  As a result, influencers with a big following and an aspirational travel Instagram pages get hired sometimes on a monthly basis, raking in full-time income while traveling the world. It’s a lifestyle that every aspiring digital nomad wants to achieve.  Considering the opportunities in the travel Instagram space, every wanderluster wants to emulate travel influencers who get to pay a lot of money and travel for free.  Unfortunately, many fail to realize that becoming an ‘influencer’ and having a trendsetting travel Instagram page takes a lot of work and requires a certain level of professionalism to turn this passion into a full-time career through Instagram.

In this article, I will give eight simple tips to help position yourself to become a travel influencer and turn your Instagram into a full-time career.

How to Become an Influencer on Instagram? Find Your Travel Instagram Niche

food and travel instagram

If you’ve ever wondered how to become a travel influencer , your travel Instagram needs to hone and focus on a specific niche to establish yourself as a thought leader and an authority in that subject.  Traveling is a huge niche with so many sub-niches you can focus on. The different types of travel niches are adventure travel, luxury travel, health and wellness travel, gastro tourism, themed cruises, tropical/island travel, hiking, winter destinations, and so on. Picking one (or if you can blend a couple of other sub-niches through your content), can help you establish authority over the subject.

An example of a travel Instagrammer in the adventure sub-niche would be posting content related to exploring mostly wild, outdoor, and exotic locations that requires a bit of adrenaline. The images and videos in adventure travel give a high focus on non-touristy places, destinations that are still unknown to the masses. Trolltunga, the now popular site in Norway, reported an increase in their tourism from 500 to 40,000 between 2009 and 2014. The spike in tourism credits the rise of Instagram between this period.  Another example of a sub-niche in the travel niche is luxury travel. To be regarded as a go-to influencer in this sub-niche, your travel Instagram would have to be filled with luxury travel content. Examples would be pictures or videos flying in first class, or staying in luxury hotels, or traveling in style that people aspire to achieve someday.

Build Your Instagram Brand

how to start a travel instagram

Digital branding is key to helping your travel Instagram page stand out from the many other successful travel influencers. Many creative travel influencers have spectacular content through their stunning travel photography and inspirational videos. With the number of travel influencers out there today, you need something more than great content to stand out. With that said, digital branding gives you that extra edge to compete with other travel Instagrammers vying for travel campaigns via Instagram sponsorship .  Building a digital brand is part of a travel influencer becoming an aspiration and inspiration.

Perhaps loyalty is the most significant advantage and benefit of creating an aspiring and inspiring digital brand. When you have a loyal following, they are more likely to engage and interact with your content, which is critical if you want to grow the followers of your travel Instagram page. A way to create an inspiring and aspiring brand for your travel Instagram page is to post visually striking images or videos consistently. If your content doesn’t capture your followers’ attention, they will just scroll past your post and be buried among the rest.  Another strategy to create an Instagram brand is through your voice. Do your captions tell a meaningful story that engages your audience to think, and inspire them to join the conversation? We spend quite a lot of time ensuring that our captions on each of our posts reflect our brand and represent our voice.

Take Great Photos

how to become an influencer on instagram

Instagram is a visual platform, so it should not be a surprise that taking great photos is a massive part of becoming a travel influencer. But don’t think you need to be a professional photographer to create visually striking imagery to inspire your followers about your travels. It’s about knowing the simple tips and tricks of creating a beautiful image and finding your style of photography. Once again, being a travel influencer doesn’t require you to invest money to study photography. However, it does require you to study the basic rules of photography and find a style that works for you. For example, every travel influencer I know is familiar with the rule of thirds, where the basic idea is NOT to place your subject and focus on the center of the image.

Another photography basics are lighting, where travel influencers mostly shoot during a specific time of day (mostly in the early morning) to have the softest lighting possible.  Apart from learning the basics of photography , many travel influencers use Presets to improve their pictures. These days, it’s pretty rare for a travel influencer not to have a preset of their own that they sell so that you can easily copy their feed. If you prefer not to spend money on presets, you can still improve your pictures by knowing some tips and tricks on how to improve  Instagram filters .  Lastly, taking exceptional photos also doesn’t mean having the fanciest and most expensive equipment. For us, we do use a professional camera that helps us create some of our best content. However, there are also moments where a picture looks just as great as using an iPhone.

Take Great Videos

Mastering Videos is another medium that travel Instagrammers need to master. We especially like to take videos on our travels and make it a point to post on our feed. Videos allow us to capture our experience on our travels better than images can. Editing is one of the necessary skills in creating a powerful Instagram travel video. Great editing would quickly tell a story and draw your viewers to keep watching the video. Focus using some of your best shots on the first five to ten seconds of your video to ensure you captivate your audience’s attention.  Consider using video editing apps such as Adobe Premiere Pro , or edit videos directly on your phone with apps such as Videorama . Both of these editing apps are user friendly and easy to follow and master.

After you’ve mastered the editing portion, the next step is selecting the right music that goes along well with your travel videos.  Some of the equipment to use to build our Instagram travel pages are drones, a professional camera, and an iPhone. We especially love drone shots because it allows us to capture certain angles that would otherwise be impossible. Professional cameras can capture quality videos as well and are high on the ground level. Lastly, iPhones are also excellent quality for capturing videos for stories.

Travel Instagram Stories

how to become a travel influencer

Instagram stories are, without a doubt, one of the platform’s popular outlet.  Considering that editing photos and videos take time, posting on Instagram stories about your travels allows you to give a preview of what’s to come. For us, we rarely post our content on our feed immediately following our travels. The amount of time it takes to edit a video and photograph just takes too long.

As a result, content creators use Instagram stories to share their content immediately. The posts are typically instantaneous and don’t require editing effort. Instagram stories also allow their followers to get an instant glimpse of their travels, and allow content creators to document everything that is happening during their travels and share them with their followers. It’s fun and a great way to interact with your followers. Instagram stories are such a powerful medium to take your travel Instagram to the next level because it allows you to go off-brand. Regardless of being a travel influencer, posting content not related to travel is entirely acceptable and won’t be seen as ‘weird.’ Posting content not related to your niche allows you to show off a little bit about yourself and other things that your followers can relate to.

Use Hashtags

Travel Instagrammers who get hired for paid travel campaigns, the use of hashtags in almost always part of the deal of the job. It means that for every post we make about the travel campaign, we have to use that specific hashtag related to that campaign.  Using hashtags can make a difference in getting your content discovered and ultimately land on the explorer page. The hashtag allows Instagram to identify people who are not following you but may be interested in your topic. In other words, you could be gaining a lot more followers if you use hashtags correctly.  So use hashtags effectively, whether on your feed posts or stories, chances are your content will reach a new audience you’ve never had before!

Collaborate with Other Travel Influencers

travel instagram niche

Part of the job of travel Instagrammers is to network off Instagram.  Not many realize that part of the hustle is to meet other travel Instagrammers and collaborate on creating content. They tend to tag each other on stories and on static posts, which creates an opportunity to be introduced to a brand new set of audiences and grow their accounts.  For us, the best part of meeting other travel Instagrammers is getting an opportunity to be invited to other travel campaigns. If a travel campaign is looking for 15 other content creators, you can potentially get an invite your new travel Instagrammer friend endorses you to be part of the campaign.  Collaborating with other travel influencers also allows you to learn from each other. There are so many creative strategies and knowledge that influencers can share with each other – from little tricks on taking pictures, or how to edit videos, or possibly learning the business side of having a travel Instagram page – networking with other influencers is a crucial part of their growth in the business.

Starting a Travel Instagram Hub Account

Many might be surprised to know that you can still start a travel Instagram account even if you don’t have a lot of personal travel content to post.  You might have just said ‘How?!’ Many Instagram travel pages are created to repost other travel content creators. It’s a curated travel page where they repost other travel pictures or videos while giving credit to the original poster. It’s a great strategy to build your travel content and followers in the beginning if you don’t have a lot of travel-related content to post yet.  Some of the Instagram accounts that are travel hub accounts that you should check out our @theglobewanderer , @welivetoexplore , @beautifuldestinations , and @earthpix to name a few.  The travel hub accounts mentioned amassed followers in the millions, and followed by some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, both in the US and abroad.

Final Word To Start Your Travel Instagram

There you have it!  Traveling while getting paid is possible with Instagram. It’s a dream that many wanderlusters aspire to have given the freedom to pursue your passion for traveling while getting paid to do it.  It’s totally doable, but it seriously takes a lot of hustle, consistency, and dedication to achieve the lifestyle of traveling the world while getting paid.  It’s also important to add that a certain level of professionalism is required to achieve success in the business. Besides creating content, travel influencers have to become business savvy and know how to pitch and negotiate when it comes to paid Instagram sponsorships – it’s all part of the game!

8 Food And Travel Instagram Accounts That Make Us Jealous

8 Food And Travel Instagram Accounts That Make Us Jealous

With it being Fantasy Travel Week , we wanted to shout out some of our favorite Instagram accounts that remind us on a daily basis about the incredible, Instagram-worthy world of food and drink out there. The fact that it's 20 degrees and drafty in our Manhattan offices right now makes us all the more — how do we put it — jealous of the photographers, graphic designers, businesspeople and journalists running these colorful accounts. Here are links to their feeds, with a few favorite photos at the end.

1.  Lost N Cheeseland

Lindsey Tramuta is a Paris-based writer and admitted Francophile who covers the city passionately on her blog, Lost in Cheeseland. As you would expect, her Instagram is filled with  choux ,  galettes  and plenty of  croissants .

2.  A Life Worth Eating

Adam Goldberg is a software engineer with a serious passion for travel, food and — if you follow him closely on Instagram — coffee. He's a big fan of shooting objects from overhead, which of course works out quite well with  bowls of noodles  and  lattes .

3.  One Mile at a Time

Ben Schlappig is a 24-year-old full-time travel blogger who claims to fly 300,000 miles per year. The blogger often rides in business class and is a keen observer of airline food, particularly the lobster and champagne types of dishes served in the front of the bus — and in the executive airline lounges. Totally follow him if you geek out for things like a new fleet of A380s.

4.  Girl Ate the World

Rather than posting all original photos, this account mostly compiles photos from women around the world holding iconic food or drink in front of recognizable backdrops. Think a Hello Kitty donut from Shibuya in Tokyo, and naan at Agra Fort in India. Also, lots and lots of ice cream. The account's curator, Melissa, an Indonesian living in Singapore, also contributes.

5.  Pissing in the Punch Bowl

Marcus Nilsson is a New York City-based photographer specializing in travel and food; he's shot covers for  Saveur  and  Bon Appétit  and also contributes to the single-topic food journal  Swallow . Some of the topics covered on his Instagram: bowls of noodles, fast food, alcohol consumption (large quantities at times), hamburgers and traveling to Mexico (a lot).

6.  Sam Horine

Horine, a Brooklyn-based photographer and photo instructor, is no stranger to us at Food Republic. Back in March 2012, when Instagram was a wee lad (and not owned by Facebook), we asked Horine to  take over our account  during a food-centric trip to Rome. He hasn't stopped shooting  visually stunning landscapes , with frequent trips to exotic destinations like Israel, Turkey, Puerto Rico and Africa.

7.  Faimfatale

As one of the partners of Austin, Texas, restaurant Qui, Deana Saukam is a gatekeeper of one of the country's top restaurants. And when she travels with her fiancée, chef Paul Qui, she often finds herself in some pretty cool places to eat food — iPhone in hand ready to shoot. Some of Saukam's recent destinations have included Japan, Vietnam, Iceland and Italy (a few times). And of course, there are plenty of  taco shots  from her hometown.

8.  Life & Thyme

Life & Thyme is a Los Angeles-based magazine documenting food culture around the globe, with stories focusing on chefs, restaurants, farmers and all sorts of food personalities in places around the globe, like New York, Nashville and Scotland. Similar to the @ FoodRepublic  account, the L&T Instagram takes you behind the scenes a bit, with editors contributing frequently.

17 Genius Instagram Caption Ideas For Your Vacation Food Pics

Group of young friends having fun in restaurant, talking and laughing while dining at table. Girl ta...

Going somewhere fun for spring break, but more concerned about getting great food content than beach content? Same . If you, too, think that one of the best parts of traveling is getting a chance to try new foods so you can share said foods on social media, you're going to need to ready yourself for a full on social blitz when you plan your next vacay. Instead of taking a bunch of amazing pictures that only sit on your camera roll because you can't think of enough amazing captions to post with them, get ahead of the game: Put together a list of Instagram captions for your vacation food posts before you even go on vacation! Store the captions in your phone, and be fully prepared to fire off some excellent content on the go.

There's nothing worse than taking an amazing picture that you can't wait to share with your friends , but getting post-shy because you just can't think of a caption that will do it justice. You spend all of this time trying out captions that just don't seem to fit and then you get frustrated and give up. Don't let a great post pass you by! Your friends at home are refreshing their feeds waiting for epic vacation content (I imagine), so it's your job to provide the goods! Luckily for you, I just so happen to enjoy reading inspiring quotes about food from famous chefs, writers, world travelers and people who just get food.

So, here I've put together a list of quotes that make the perfect Instagram caption when you just can't find the words to explain exactly how "yum" and "life changing" your meal is. Just don't forget to add some relevant hashtags (#nom) if you want to reach people beyond your own personal social circle. The food and travel community on Instagram is epic, and you can easily use your next travel and dining experience to connect with cool new friends who share the same interests.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Tourists warned against eating Asian delicacy over 'suction cup' risk that can kill

Tourists warned against eating Asian delicacy over 'suction cup' risk that can kill

On average, it kills six people a year.

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

Heading overseas and trying out local delicacies you can't get back home is one of the most exciting parts of travelling abroad.

But some dishes should be avoided like the plague as they can make you very poorly or worse, kill you.

A warning exists when it comes to not eating the 'world's most dangerous cheese' at one of Europe's top destinations. It's banned from being sold in shops, which is enough of an indicator about not touching it.

There's also a big alert on a popular Thai dish that could give you liver cancer from just one bite . Despite this, people are still against banning it .

The list does not stop there, with one delicacy coming with a 'suction cup' warning that can very much take your life if you're unlucky.

Roughly six people a year die from eating the local plate, which is incredibly popular despite this very sobering fact.

The deaths usually make the headlines and are often accompanied by guidance on safer ways to eat the delicacy if you still wish to consume it despite the very obvious warning.

There's also a huge ethical issue when it comes to the plate given the animal is very much alive when it's consumed. No, we're not joking.

Sannakji prepared for a customer to eat (Getty Stock Images)

The dish up for debate is something called Sannakji. It's a delicacy in South Korea and adored by many native to the country.

Naturally, it's also sampled by countless tourists given how unique a dish it is.

That's because it is live octopus that is diced up in front of your eyes and served raw.

It's prepared by cutting up young, living octopus into small pieces and served immediately.

Sannakji is often served with a chilli paste with people wrapping the tentacles up around a chop stick before consuming.

Sannakji can kill (Getty Stock Images)

The 'suction cup' warning might be self explanatory by this stage, but if not, it's because the tentacles are quite literally eaten minutes after being cut from the octopus' body.

They continue to wriggle as they're served to punters. Unfortunately, it sees the suction cups on the octopus' legs stick to the inside of a person's throat. I don't think we need to explain the rest, other than to say asphyxiation is the usual cause of death.

Animal rights activists vehemently oppose the consumption of Sannakji, with octopuses part of the cephalopod family, there is an assumption to many that they ca perceive pain and therefore can feel their limbs being cut off.

Charity PETA says that during the preparation stage, the octopus are 'hacked apart while they are still conscious and often times desperately struggling to get away', which, in their defence, does seem a tad cruel.
