The best time to take a Denali flightseeing tour is during the spring and summer months when the weather is more predictable. These unforgettable tours can be booked from nearby towns like Talkeetna, but it is essential to plan and conduct research in advance for a seamless and memorable adventure.

It is home to the famous Denali mountain, which is the highest peak in North America, situated within the Alaska Range. Benefits of Flying Over Denali

Denali National Park and Preserve is a majestic destination, offering incredible views of mountains, glaciers, and natural landscapes. One of the best ways to appreciate its beauty is through a Denali flightseeing tour. There are numerous benefits to taking a flightseeing tour over Denali, which are highlighted in this section.

One significant reason to choose a flightseeing tour is the unparalleled views it provides. Flying over Denali allows visitors to see the park’s massive landscape from a unique perspective, showcasing its vast expanses of wilderness, striking mountain peaks, and picturesque glaciers. Aerial views of Ruth Glacier, Kahiltna Glacier, and the Great Gorge are nothing short of breathtaking.

Another advantage is the ability to explore areas that are challenging or potentially impossible to reach on foot. Flightseeing tours bring visitors closer to the remotest parts of Denali National Park, revealing hidden gems that might otherwise remain unseen. Exploring these spectacular environments from the sky allows visitors to appreciate Denali’s full beauty in a way that isn’t possible through ground-based activities.

Additionally, flying over Denali enables travelers to truly grasp the scale of the park, as well as the stunning geological features for which it is renowned. The park boasts extraordinary sights such as the impressive heights of the mountain ranges, expansive glaciers, and spectacular icefalls. Seeing these wonders from the air affords a unique perspective, highlighting their magnitude and emphasizing the importance of preserving such remarkable natural areas.

Weather permitting, flightseeing tours in Denali National Park can also provide the rare opportunity to see the summit of North America’s highest peak, Mount Denali. This achievement is difficult for hikers and climbers to accomplish, making a flightseeing tour an accessible and enjoyable way for all types of visitors to experience this special moment.

To summarize, taking a Denali flightseeing tour offers numerous benefits, including exceptional aerial views, access to remote areas of the park, a unique perspective on its geological features, and the chance to see Mount Denali’s summit. It’s an unforgettable adventure that showcases the park’s diverse beauty and underscores the need for continued conservation efforts to preserve these natural wonders for future generations.

The summer months, typically between May and September, are considered the best time to take a Denali flightseeing tour due to more favorable weather conditions. During this time, the days are long and warmer, providing more opportunities to appreciate the beauty of Denali.

However, even during the summer months, weather can be unpredictable. Preparing for different weather conditions is crucial for a successful flightseeing tour. It’s important to prioritize safety and be open to rescheduling if necessary.

In terms of the time of day, mornings tend to be smoother on the approach to and from Denali.

Clouds can also tend to build with the heat of the day.

Some tourists prefer flying in the evening for the dramatic shadows and light angles, as they create a unique and picturesque view of the landscape. No matter when you decide to take a Denali flightseeing tour, keep the following tips in mind to ensure you make the most of your experience:

  • Check the local weather forecast and be prepared for variable conditions
  • Dress in layers to accommodate for changing temperatures
  • Schedule your flight early in your trip to allow flexibility for rescheduling if needed
  • Pack a camera to capture the unforgettable views of Denali National Park and Preserve
  • Be sure to bring sunglasses, it can be very bright on Denali.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! Children under age 2 years are lap babies and are free of charge; a lap baby does not get his/her own seat. Please select "infant" at checkout.

Yes, courtesy shuttles to and from hotels, campgrounds, and landmarks are available. Please note that pick up cannot typically be offered from Airbnbs. Contact us with questions about pick-ups from a specific location. Pick-up times range from 30-60 minutes before flight times, depending on location.

No, this tour does not have an individual passenger weight limit or additional fees based on passenger weight. Please note that passengers must be able to enter and exit the airplane door. Please contact us with specific questions.

Vans can accommodate folding wheelchairs. Lifts or ramps are unavailable for the vans or the aircraft. Passengers must be able to ascend/descend 2-3 steps (with assistance). The office and restrooms are wheelchair-accessible.

This is a very common question and is unfortunately impossible to answer! There is not a predictable weather pattern in Denali. The massive size of Mt. Denali results in unique weather patterns that can vary throughout the day. We highly recommend that passengers book their flights as early into their Denali stay as possible in order to maximize opportunities to reschedule according to weather conditions.

Passengers should dress according to temperatures on the ground; a sweater or light jacket is usually sufficient for the plane. Sunglasses are highly recommended due to the bright glare off the snow of the glaciers and peaks.

It is recommended that passengers bring their cameras/phones with extra batteries and sunglasses. Most guests do not find binoculars helpful during the flight but feel free to bring binoculars if you’d like. Due to FAA regulations, passengers are not permitted to bring carry-on bags on flights. Passengers must carry all small personal items, such as cameras and phones. Passengers are encouraged to leave any backpacks and purses in a secure location at the tour provider's office.

Flights do not exceed 12,000 feet and most of the flight ranges between 7,000 to 10,000 feet. This is the optimal altitude to really capture the enormity of the towering peaks and also get close views of the breathtaking glaciers and valleys in Denali.

The weather in the mountains is difficult to predict and our tour provider relies on a variety of sources to make decisions about flights and educate visitors about flight conditions. They check weather cameras in the Denali vicinity and also rely on pilot reports in addition to more traditional weather sources (radar, etc). The weather in the Park and especially Mt. Denali can be very different than the weather at the hotels/in the Park entrance area. Flights cancelled and unable to be rescheduled are fully refundable.

The fleet consists of Piper Navajos (seat 6) and a Piper Chieftain (seats 8). The twin-engine planes are relatively spacious compared to smaller Alaskan bush planes with an aisle running down the center and one seat on either side of the aisle. All seats are window seats.

Yes, all seats are window seats. You are welcome to request a specific seat, including co-pilot, but seating is ultimately decided by the pilot due to configuring weights and balance for the aircraft. If you have a specific request, please notify the front desk upon check-in. Also, if you are traveling with a group under different last names, please notify your van driver or the front desk if you would like to sit on the same plane.

Denali Flightseeing Tour: A Bucket-List Moment above the Alaskan Range

flightseeing tour denali

A Denali flightseeing tour is likely nothing like you’ve ever experienced. Depending on the plane size, a dozen or fewer people contort themselves into the small plane, buckle up, and for some, pray the sudden jolts don’t bring back up their lunch.

As the engines roar to life, the plane begins to bobble ever so slightly from side to side as it cruises down the gravel runway. Then you’re airborne, heading towards North America’s tallest peak and a magical trip through the Alaskan Range.

Below, we’ll dive into all you need to know to plan, book, and experience your Denali flightseeing tour out of Talkeetna. So get ready for the flight of your life!

How to Choose the Right Denali Flightseeing Tour for You

Is flightseeing in alaska worth it.

A resounding yes! Years later, this is still the best vacation experience I’ve ever had, and it will blow your socks off.

It is honestly something you will think back to for years and years and be like, “Wow, remember when we flew around the Alaskan Range and Denali National Park?”

The Best Time to Take a Denali Flightseeing Tour

Summer is hands-down the best time to do your Denali flightseeing tour. While you’re not guaranteed clear blue skies as we had, the weather will be much less chaotic, and you shouldn’t have flights canceled.

Plus, with long summer days, if they have to move your flight around to avoid a storm, there’s still lots of daylight to work with.

Denali flightseeing tour

Why do they fly out of Talkeetna?

Talkeetna is the best place to fly out of because it’s the shortest distance from the Alaskan Range. This means there’s less time spent on the approach and more time spent amongst the snowy jagged peaks. Plus, you get to hang out in the town of Talkeetna , which is a fun little spot!

Who can I fly around Denali National Park with?

Three tour companies embark from Talkeetna: Sheldon Air, K2 Aviation, and Talkeetna Air. We flew Talkeetna Air and found they ran a great experience.

I broke down the flight options below, but I’ll give more detail on each.

Talkeetna Air offers the Southside Explore, Mountain Voyager, Grand Denali, and Summit Tour. Additionally, when the weather allows, they offer a Winter Explorer in winter.

flightseeing tour denali

Southside Explorer

The Southside Explorer is the shortest trip and gives you just an introduction to the range. You stay on the south side and over two glaciers.

Mountain Voyager – Denali Flightseeing Tour

The Mountain Voyager is 1.25 hours long and follows the same entrance and exit as the Southside Explorer. However, this one travels further northwest and east, giving you wild shots of the Alaskan Range.

Grand Denali – Flightseeing Denali

We took the Grand Denali flight, which was perfect. Two hours long with the glacier landing, this Denali flightseeing tour circumnavigates Denali, so you get a 360-degree look at the tallest mountain in North America. (The full route is below.)

Summit Tour – Denali Flightseeing Tour

The Summit Tour is the real deal. You must wear oxygen masks as the flight takes you above 20,000 feet. This also swings wide west, taking you around Mt. Foraker, to the top of Denali, and then coming around the backside.

How much does it cost to fly around Denali?

It ranges in cost to do a Denali Flightseeing tour. The least expensive flight is $255 with K2 Aviation. If you want a glacier landing, they’re about an extra $100, though each company charges slightly different prices.

If you do a glacier landing, expect to be on the ground for 20-25 minutes.

The Different Types of Denali Flightseeing Tours Available

flightseeing tour denali

Can you fly over Denali?

If you choose the Summit Tour, they will get you up to 20,000 feet to see the top of Denali. However, I believe they only offer this when they can get a full flight. I remember them telling us it wasn’t available when we considered going.

Denali National Park flight alaska

Can you land a plane in Denali National Park?

Absolutely, you can land a plane in Denali. These three companies all of the right to do glacier landings in Denali National Park, and it’s an incredible experience. Seeing the mountains up close is a truly mesmerizing experience.

If you have the financial means, I strongly recommend adding a glacier landing to your flight. It’s a memory you won’t forget.

How to plan your trip for Flightseeing Denali

How far is talkeetna from anchorage.

It’s a two-hour drive from Anchorage to Talkeetna. Once you pass Wasilla, unfortunately, there are no major stores, so get all the goodies you need there before making the final 1.25-hour drive.

How many days in Talkeetna?

I would recommend a night in Talkeetna in case your tour gets bumped due to weather or something wacky happens. A few hikes are nearby, or you can drive an hour to Denali State Park.

Overnight Options Near Talkeetna?

There are two campgrounds and plenty of lodging options in and around Talkeetna.

Tips for a Safe and Comfortable Denali Flightseeing Experience

What to wear on a denali flightseeing tour.

Wear comfortable yet warm clothes on your flight. You’re going to be 8,000 or so feet in the air, and it can get chilly inside (this is not like a Boeing 747!). I wore a long-sleeved wool shirt, hiking pants, and a down jacket to stay warm while on the glacier.

Also, bring sunglasses with you if you are booking the glacier walk.

Plan your meals and bathroom breaks.

It’s a smooth flight, but there will be turbulence and some bumpiness as you take off and land. Ensure you don’t overeat food before hopping on your Denali flightseeing tour.

Furthermore, make sure to ‘go’ before the flight. There’s no bathroom on these small planes.

The Best Photo Opportunities on a Denali Flightseeing Tour

Here are a few tips if you plan to take photographs on the Denali flightseeing tour.

Camera and Lenses

The camera body matters less than the lens in this case. I used my Canon Mark5D III – a great used body for people just getting into photography. But, of course, any full-frame body should do the trick. But what does matter is the lens.

I also brought a 24-70 and a 70-200 . I recommend only bringing the 70-200 because you’re so close to the window that anything wider than 45 will get the window frame in it. Furthermore, having the zoom ability in to 200mm was amazing in catching finer details of glaciers and peaks.

Camera Settings

The weather will slightly decide your settings, but if you have a bluebird day, make sure your shutter speed is 1/1500 or greater and then have your aperture at something over f/5 to keep things in focus. (I had mine near f/8 due to sunny skies.)

Lastly, if you have a new camera, don’t be afraid to push your ISO around 500 if it means you can have a quicker shutter speed to capture the sights as you’re flying.

Denali Flightseeing: A Bird’s Eye View of the Great One

Only 30% of visitors to Alaska get to see Denali. The 30% club, as they call it, makes the mountain more mystical than it already is. Yet, for those who see it, few get as good a view as those who fly next to it.

This is due to the proximity of Denali to the roads and highways around it. You never get close enough for a damn good view! This fact was precisely why I wanted to hop on a flight from Talkeetna and find my way among the towering peaks of the Alaskan Range.

Oh, boy, was it worth it.

You’re already in uncharted territory for most visitors just minutes after take-off. The Earth below is scattered with lakes; the remaining terrain is a tundra. But then, the mountains come into view, and your mouth opens in awe.

With a late May Denali National Park flight, the peaks were still snow-capped (probably always are). Yet, the cloudless day gave us unparalleled views of every peak, ridgeline, and glacier crevasse. Stunning was an understatement.

Experience the Thrill of a Lifetime with a Grand Denali Flightseeing Tour

What you’ll see on a denali flightseeing tour.

Our Grand Denali route (seen below) went clockwise around Denali, showing us long glaciers, Denali Camp 2 or 3 (unsure precisely), and the most beautiful sights of my life.

It was a bumpy start after take-off, but I quickly went into photographer mode, trying to figure out how to take high-quality photos from a moving airplane. (I had never done it before, so there were plenty of bad shots.)

But the plane entered the mountains before long, and it was glorious. The views were – and are to this day – the most incredible I had ever seen.

flightseeing tour denali

Before long, we could see Denali, all 20,100 feet of her, directly in front of us. I think I got goosebumps. Then after zig-zagging through some peaks, we began our turn to Denali’s backside. Here we could see one of the basecamps for those planning to summit. The scale was immense!

Our plane sank lower and lower toward the glacier below as we came around the backside of the Denali flightseeing tour. We were landing; on a glacier; in Denali’s shadow. It was a sight to see!

Denali National Park flight

A Denali Flightseeing Glacier Landing

For the next fifteen minutes, we gazed out at the white blanket of snow with peaks more dreamy than I could have imagined. It was snowy heaven.

While flying around is amazing, getting a chance to slow down and soak in the views from the ground was dazzling. I really couldn’t believe how lucky we were to have such a clear day to witness this beauty on this Denali flight tour.

Denali Flightseeing Visiting Alaska Talkeetna Air

Before long, the Denali flightseeing tour group was again squeezing their way into the tight seats. Minutes later, the engines throttled, and we zipped across the snowy glacier, somehow becoming airborne.

Our Denali flight tour route followed a receding glacier, quickly turning white to brown, then the Earth turned to rock, and finally the tundra again. As we sped towards Talkeetna, I craned my neck, trying to spot the snow peaks once more out of the tiny 8×8 window.

Denali Flightseeing Tour – Wrapping Up

I know it probably sounds like I’m high on my own supply, but this is, honest to God, the most amazing experience you can have in Alaska. Hopping on a Denali flightseeing tour is definitely pricey, but it’s worth it for a lifetime of memories.

Until next time adventurers, take care and be safe.

Denali from the Sky: Guide to Denali Flightseeing Tours in 2024

' src=

Embarking on a Denali flightseeing tour is more than just a trip; it’s an experience that transforms your perspective on nature’s magnificence. Denali is home to North America’s tallest peak, offering awe-inspiring views that are best savored from the skies. This guide aims to navigate you through the exhilarating world of the best Denali flightseeing tours, starting from the charming town of Talkeetna and extending to the rustic Denali Village. We created this guide to help you find the perfect scenic flight, equipping you with practical tips, informed insights, and all you need to make your flightseeing experience unforgettable.

The best Denali Flightseeing Tours in 2024 - view from plane.

Why Denali Flightseeing? A Personal Perspective

In Alaska, where the landscapes stretch beyond the reach of roads, flightseeing tours show a world unseen. For Chris and me, each scenic flight, whether over the towering peaks of Denali or the remote wilderness of the Brooks Range, has been a revelation of nature’s majesty.

Having visited and explored Denali National Park multiple times, we are confident that one of the premier activities in Denali is embarking on a scenic flight, offering an unparalleled perspective of the park’s majesty. So, make sure to add it to your Denali itinerary .

All of our adventures in Alaska, including the scenic flights, are self-funded, ensuring our reviews and recommendations are unbiased. We aim to share genuine knowledge, experiences, and tips, free from any external influence.

Our Denali Journey with K2 Aviation

Our scenic flight from Talkeetna, featuring a glacier landing with K2 Aviation, wasn’t just about seeing Denali; it was about experiencing it. The crisp air, the untouched snow, and the scale of the mountains were humbling. We booked this tour .

Other Alaskan Sky Adventures

Our flights over the Brooks Range and Gates of the Arctic with Fly Coyote were enlightening. We also flew to Katmai National Park with Katmai Air. These trips enhanced our insight into scenic flights. They taught us how to choose the best tours. We learned about preparing for Alaska’s weather. These flights also showed us how to appreciate every moment in the air fully.

Through these lenses, we’ve crafted this guide. Our aim? To help you navigate the skies of Denali with the same awe and appreciation that we’ve come to know.

Choosing Your Denai Flightseeing Adventure

Deciding on the right flightseeing tour in Denali involves considering several key factors. Each choice offers a unique way to experience the park’s splendor.

Fixed-Wing vs. Denali Helicopter Tours

Fixed-wing tours , often departing from Talkeetna, offer stability and expansive views, ideal for photography. Denali helicopter tours , available from Denali Park, allow for more intimate, close-up views of the landscape, though they may cost more.

You must know that no trip guarantees seeing the highest peak in North America – Denali – clouds may cover the peak at any minute. But the chances are pretty high that we managed to see its majesty.

Tour Types: Is it worth booking Denali Flightseeing With Glacier Landing?

Our glacier landing scenic flight tour was a breathtaking experience. If your budget permits, we highly recommend opting for a Denali flightseeing tour that includes a glacier landing. The thrill of touching down amidst towering, nearly vertical peaks is truly unforgettable. From our perspective, the additional cost for this unique experience is absolutely worthwhile.

Tours options range from comprehensive tours to focused glacier landings. Consider duration, sights covered, and any special features like glacier landings. These tours might seem pricier, but they offer two experiences in one: a scenic flight and a short hike on a glacier .

For Denali flight tours with an optional glacier landing, it’s important to note that a National Park Pass is required for glacier landings. This pass must be obtained from nps.gov prior to your flight. The cost for a 7-day pass is $15.00 for individuals aged 16 and older.

But in the case of this scenic flight tour we booked , we did not worry about additional fees for entry to the park because they were included in the trip’s price.

Evaluating Operators

Research operators for safety records, guest reviews, and tour variety. We recommend K2 Aviation for their exemplary service and experience. We booked this tour with a glacier landing . The most popular operators are:

  • K2 Aviation , aka FlyK2 : Known for safety and quality.
  • Talkeetna Air Taxi : Another reputable choice for tours from Talkeetna.
  • Denali Air : Offers distinct experiences from near the Denali entrance.
  • TEMSCO Helicopters Inc : Offers helicopter flights near the Denali Park entrance.
  • Sheldon Air Service : featured flightseeing tours in Denali from Talkeetna.

Cost vs. Experience: How much does a Denali Flightseeing cost?

Scenic airplane tours over Denali typically cost between $275 and $475 per person. This variation in price is based on the chosen tour, its duration, and additional activities like glacier landings or hikes.

Helicopter tours , offering more intimate mountain views and often including glacier landings or hiking experiences, are priced higher, generally between $525 and $625. While these tours represent a significant investment, the unique and memorable experience they provide justifies the cost for many adventurers.

Balance your budget with the experience offered. Remember, some experiences are worth the extra cost for their once-in-a-lifetime value. By carefully weighing these aspects, you can select a flightseeing tour that aligns perfectly with your interests and expectations, ensuring a memorable journey above Denali.

How to Add Denali Scenic Flight to Your Alaska Itinerary?

Incorporating a Denali flightseeing tour into your Alaska itinerary largely depends on your travel schedule. For a 10-day road trip loop from Anchorage , we recommend adding a flightseeing tour in Talkeetna, conveniently located midway between Anchorage and Denali.

Alternatively, if your journey starts from Fairbanks , opting for a flightseeing tour from Denali Village, near the park entrance, might be more practical.

Flightseeing from Talkeetna: A Gateway to the Skies

Talkeetna’s ideal location.

Strategically positioned, Talkeetna is about 115 miles north of Anchorage, making it an accessible gateway to Denali. Its proximity, approximately 60 miles from Denali National Park, ensures unparalleled views of the Alaska Range. One of the top activities in Talkeetna is taking a scenic flight over Denali.

Traveling from Anchorage to Talkeetna is straightforward, as it’s halfway to Denali and offers multiple options like driving, a scenic train journey, or by bus. This makes the tour an ideal day trip from Anchorage in summer , especially if your time in Alaska is limited.

Range of Flightseeing Options

Talkeetna offers diverse tours, including the “Denali Experience” and “Denali Flyer.” These range from 1 to 3 hours, allowing visitors to choose based on their interests, budget, and time constraints.

Key Operators:

  • K2 Aviation: Offers tours like the “Grand Denali” with glacier landings.
  • Talkeetna Air Taxi: Known for the “Summit Tour” and glacier landings.

The town’s rich aviation history, dating back to early bush pilots, adds depth to the experience. Pilots in Talkeetna often have generational expertise in flying in Alaskan conditions. Flights from Talkeetna traverse the Susitna River, revealing the lush forest landscapes of Alaska, before ascending toward the dramatic peaks of Denali.

Talkeetna’s blend of historical significance, expert operators, and stunning natural beauty makes it a top choice for an unforgettable flightseeing experience in Denali.

A Step-by-Step Flightseeing Journey: From Booking to Landing

This step-by-step guide ensures a smooth flightseeing experience from start to finish, making your journey over Denali both memorable and hassle-free.

Research and Booking

  • Research operators, compare tours, and check cancellation policies. Flightseeing is weather-dependent, so understanding policies for cancellations and rescheduling is crucial.
  • That is why our choice is a Get Your Guide or Viator, as their reservation and cancellation policy is described precisely and transparently.
  • In the event that weather conditions are not conducive to a safe flight, the tour will be called off, ensuring your safety. In such cases, you are assured a full refund, guaranteeing a 100% return of your payment.
  • Book early in your Denali itinerary to allow room for rescheduling. Online and phone bookings are both options.

Pre-Flight Preparations

  • Pack essentials, including sunglasses, a camera, layered clothing, and hiking boots with good traction.
  • Large backpacks or bags are usually not allowed; pack compactly. It’s a great idea to have large pockets in your jacket.
  • Refer to our detailed Alaska packing list for summer activities for more guidance.

Arrival and Check-in

  • Arrive early, typically 30 minutes before the flight.
  • Check-in involves a safety briefing and an overview of the tour.

The Flightseeing Experience

  • Board the aircraft and embark on your scenic journey.
  • Enjoy live commentary from experienced pilots.
  • Remember that there is no guarantee of seeing Denali Peak.
  • Follow safety rules.

Landing and Return

  • If your tour includes a landing (e.g., on a glacier), there will be time to explore.
  • Return to the starting point, completing your aerial adventure.

Maximizing Your Experience: Tips and Tricks

  • Choose the Right Time of Day . Morning flights often have clearer weather. Consider this when booking for optimal views.
  • Selecting the Best Seat . If possible, choose a window seat for unobstructed views. In helicopters, every seat typically offers good visibility.
  • Photography Preparation . Use polarized lenses to reduce glare. Keep camera settings ready for quick shots.
  • Dress Appropriately. Even in summer, temperatures can be chilly at altitude. Dress in layers and wear windproof outerwear.
  • Stay Hydrated and Nourished . Bring water and a light snack, especially for longer tours.
  • Engage with Your Pilot . Pilots often provide insightful commentary. Feel free to ask questions.
  • Be Flexible with Expectations . Weather can change plans. Be open to alternate routes or rescheduling.

Weather Wisdom: Planning Around Denali’s Climate

Denali’s weather is notably unpredictable, impacting flightseeing schedules. Being prepared for Denali’s varying weather conditions ensures a safer and more enjoyable flightseeing experience.

  • Understanding Denali’s Weather Patterns . Denali’s microclimate makes accurate predictions challenging. Summers are more stable but can change quickly.
  • Flexibility is Key . Be ready to adjust plans, as operators may make last-minute decisions based on the weather.
  • Regular Weather Updates . Monitor local weather forecasts and contact your tour operator for updates.
  • Plan for Delays . Weather-related delays are common. Include extra days in your itinerary for possible rescheduling.
  • Safety First . Trust your operator’s judgment regarding weather conditions. Safety is paramount. During our Gates of the Arctic National Park trip , our Coyote Air pilot, Danielle, canceled our flight due to poor visibility. Similarly, we faced a cancellation from King Salmon for our Katmai National Park visit. Always have room in your schedule for such eventualities. We had extra time in our itinerary to postpone those flightseeing tours, so we had a chance to experience the beauty and wildness of those remote locations.

Photography from the Skies: Capturing Denali Splendor During Flightseeing Tour

Capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of Denali from the air requires specific photographic techniques. Even without professional gear, great shots are possible with a smartphone. The key lies in knowing a few tricks.

  • Camera Gear . A DSLR or high-quality compact camera is ideal. Smartphones can also capture stunning shots. Ensure your device has a secure strap.
  • Lens Choice . For cameras, use a zoom lens for distance and a wide angle for broader views. Smartphone users should utilize their device’s landscape mode.
  • Camera Settings . A fast shutter speed is crucial. For smartphones, use burst mode to increase the chances of clear shots.
  • Polarizing Filters . These filters reduce glare, which is especially important in snowy or watery environments.
  • Avoiding Window Reflections . Dark clothing helps minimize reflections on window glass.
  • Battery and Memory . Carry extra batteries and memory cards. Cold affects battery life.
  • Practice . Familiarize yourself with your camera or smartphone settings before the flight.

The Best Denali Flightseeing Tours – Final Thoughts

We hope this article has helped you in choosing and booking your Denali flightseeing tour. For Chris and me, it was an adventure of a lifetime. We’re excited to embark on another scenic flight in the summer of 2024, this time planning a Denali helicopter tour with a hike from Denali Village.

We would absolutely have Denali flightseeing on our list when we finally get to Alaska for a land trip. I totally believe this would give us an unparalleled view. We have never been disappointed when we took in amazing sights from the air. It might be hard to choose between a plane and a helicopter though. But we sure would want that glacier landing!

Such a cool perspective to see Denali from the air. What amazing landscapes to see from a distance! It is neat that some of these tours have stops on the mountains.

Wonderful pictures of the Alaska glacier! And what an adventure to go on a flightseeing tour in such an amazing landscape! I would have loved to do a tour like this. But with all the climate change I made a vow to fly less. It was with a heavy heart that I decided not to do any more tourist sightseeing flights in my life. If I ever go to Alaska, I hope I can keep this resolution……

As much as I’d love to say I would do any of these tours, my fear of heights would stop me in my tracks! The views look incredible and I have never been to Alaska when visiting the USA, so this would be a great experience. Your tips are very helpful and a morning flight would probably suit me better. I think my husband would enjoy this but I know he would want me to join! For the price, I know it’s expensive and so we would have to be prepared with your great tips!

Denali National Park Flightseeing Tour Reviews

1. denali 1-hour flight experience from talkeetna.

  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Departure: Corner of E 2nd Street and South Terminal Way
  • Departure Time: Variety Available
  • Includes: W indow seat, h eadsets to hear the pilot guide, w elcome coffee, tea, or cocoa, o verboots provided for glacier landing (if option selected)

First up, we bring you the Talkeetna: Denali Sightseeing Flight Experience . Lasting 1 to 1.5 hours (depending on traffic, weather, and other circumstances), it’s super easy to fit into just about any schedule. Limited to just 10 participants, you can count on a personalized experience with the ability to learn from an experienced guide/pilot.

Meet at the tour start location, and meet with your guide/pilot who will get you acquainted with the aircraft and fill you in on any safety information. Before you fly, they’ll welcome you with a delicious, warm beverage like coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.

Sip on it by the lodge-style office fireplace. It feels like you’re hanging out at a friend’s house and is the perfect way to start off the tour. You’ll watch a brief-yet-comprehensive flight video in the office theater which will give you a good idea of what to expect and answer any questions you may have.

Expand To See More See Less

After you watch, follow your pilot to the aircraft and sit down in a window seat. Before taking off, your pilot will conduct a safety check, check your microphones, and make sure you can hear them well on your headset.

Then, you’re off toward the Alaska Range! You’ll first fly over the stunning Susitna Valley, where you’ll keep your eyes peeled for moose, bears, and other giants.

Once you get over the range, your pilot will show you some of the most impressive lookout points while providing interesting stories, historical accounts, and personal anecdotes before heading close to the Denali summit. As it’s not always possible to see Denali (the mountain) from land, this is something really special!

You’ll then see the Tokositna Glacier Valley and the various notorious peaks close by. Before landing, you’ll get to see The Great Gorge, which ranks as the world’s deepest! By any view it’s impressive, but from way up high in the sky, it looks unreal!

Limited to groups of 10 people, maximum, you can expect a personalized experience you’re sure to want to repeat again and again! Once you arrive to the cozy cabin office, you’ll check in and be offered a safety and weather briefing.

These briefings will let you know what to expect when you’re in the air. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and are such a pleasure to chat with and ask any questions you may have. If you choose the glacier landing option, they’ll also provide you with glacier boots and other required gear.

Hang out for a moment on the deck as you wait for your flight to be ready for you. Then, board the aircraft, make sure all microphones and headsets are properly working, and you’re off! Everyone gets a window seat, so you have a full aerial view of the wonders below.

As you pass by the Alaska Range and notable landmarks such as The Great Gorge, Don Sheldon Amphitheater, and Ruth Glacier, your guide will provide an interesting narration on their history.

4. Denali 75-Minute Flight Experience From Talkeetna

  • Duration: 75 to 105 minutes
  • Includes:   Hotel pickup and drop-off, f light tour with pilot/guide, w indow seat for every guest, t wo-way headsets, c offee, tea, and cocoa

Our next tour is a little bit different from the others we’ve covered so far, and lasts anywhere from 75 to 105 minutes. The Talkeetna: Denali 75-Minute Flight Experience will show you not only Denali, but Little Switzerland, Kahiltna Glacier, and much more! If you want to see the Alaskan wilderness in a short amount of time, this is an excellent way to do so.

Once you arrive on site of your tour’s office, you’ll check in at their cute office while enjoying either a coffee, tea, or hot chocolate by their crackling fireplace. Here, they’ll turn on a short flight video that will offer insight into how your flight will go and answer most questions.

Then, the guide/pilot will give you a safety briefing and tell you about the weather conditions for that day. Follow your pilot out to the deck, where you’ll be assigned a window seat and test your mics. Take off toward the towering Alaska Range, first flying over the deep Susitna Valley.

This valley is home to many big wildlife, like moose and bears. The pilots love sharing their own personal anecdotes of the critters they’ve seen in this area and are great at spotting them for all to see.

You’ll fly within just 6 miles of the Denali summit – a towering, ominous experience! Head up to the Tokisitna Glacier before you turn to the 44-mile-long Kahiltna. This is the longest in the national park and one of the longest in the world. You may even get to see some mountain climbers up there!

You’ll then head east by Mount Huntington and see the south face of enormous Denali. If you choose, at this time you’ll also land on a glacier within the national park. The one you land on depends on the weather and the pilot’s discretion.

5. Grand Denali Flight Tour with Optional Glacier Landing From Talkeetna

  • Includes:  Pilot, n arrated flight, w indow seat, t wo-way headset

We couldn’t leave off the Talkeetna: Grand Denali Flight Tour with Optional Glacier Landing ! If you’re an adrenaline junkie or simply want to experience Denali in a completely unique way, this is it! Lasting up to 2 hours long, you are in the hands of an experienced pilot who knows this park incredibly well.

Once in Talkeetna, the crew will pick you up and take you to their log cabin-style office. Once you’re here, you can get comfortable next to their fireplace while sipping on a hot coffee, tea, or hot chocolate while watching a brief flight video.

This video will show you what to expect on your aircraft and then your pilot will give you a safety briefing. Then, you’ll all be ready to board and take your window seat! These are some of the best views around!

Your first sight will be the Susitna Valley, where your pilot will help you spot some moose and/or bears! It’s not guaranteed, but there is a very high chance that you’ll see one or the other.

Then, head to the Alaska Range and onto the Tokisitna Glacier and Kahiltna Glacier, which is the longest in the park. Your guide will then take you behind Mount Hunter and Mount Foraker.

Check out the popular “hard mountain” called ‘Moose’s Tooth’. One of the most iconic formations in all of North America, it stands over 10,000 feet tall just by the Ruth Gorge entrance.

Next, enjoy the “open air” environment of the Don Sheldon amphitheater which is often considered to be one of the unofficial wonders of the world! This tour also includes an optional glacier landing to make it more “real” and offer amazing photo ops!

Denali National Park Tour Guide

Getting there –.

There are 3 major methods of transportation to Denali National Park : car, train, or bus. There are no local airports, but Fairbanks is 120 miles a way and Anchorage is 240 miles.

You could fly to one of them and then rent a car, or take the train or bus to get to Denali. However, you’re likely going to be staying in Healy, which is just about 15 to 20 minutes away from Denali.

We recommend the train, just because it’s so cozy, smooth, and comfortable. Plus, it’s a great way to see Alaska from large windows!

Getting Around –

Getting around Denali Park is surprisingly easy, considering the varying and sometimes extreme terrain. However, there are very well-paved paths throughout a large portion of the park and during the summertime, private vehicles can drive through the first 15 miles of the road out to Savage River. This is a great way to potentially see wild animals hanging around in their natural habitats, along with the obvious natural beauty that the park has to offer.

Aside from private vehicles, there’s also the option of taking the affordable transit buses that stop intermittently to view wildlife, for rests, and more. Alternatively, you have free buses and narrated tour buses.

In order to get past the first 15 miles, you’ll have to be on a bus, bike, or on foot. Biking is a lot of fun in the summertime, with soft, paved hills. Walking is nice too, but can genuinely get tiresome after the first few miles.

Where to Stay –

Despite being pretty remote, there are quite a few lodging options if you’re going to be exploring Denali Park. You can find something to fit just about any budget, from hostel cabins and more affordable roadhouses to luxury hotels on the side of the mountains.

If you’re going with a significant other, the Denali Crow’s Nest Cabins are romantic, luxurious, and have fantastic views. If you have your RV with you, the Denali Rainbow Village RV Park & Motel is the way to go. If you’re going with the entire family, check out the Healy Heights Family Cabins. They’re family-friendly and have a lot of extra space and beds.

Restaurants and Eating Out –

We said it before, and we’ll say it again: Denali has some incredible food. Let’s take a look at some of the best-rated restaurants that we also approve of!

229 Parks Restaurant and Tavern – Located inside a charming little log cabin on the side of the road, it shows off a wide array of different Alaskan cuisines, from rich seafood to seasonal produce. It may not look like a big deal from the outside, but it is high in demand so make sure to book ahead.

Rose’s Café – Made to refuel during long trips, it’s family-owned and operated and is perfect for starting your day off early. They’re always ready to serve you delicious coffee, soup, eggs benedict, and more at the crack of dawn with a smile on their faces!

Moose-AKA’s – This restaurant manages to transport you to Europe, with Serbian/Eastern European influences! Fried crepes and schnitzel are a couple of the most popular dishes here, but you’re sure to try something you’ve never had before.

The Black Bear – Featured on Food Network as the “Best Coffee House in Alaska”, it’s been going strong for over 2 decades now. Always busy in the mornings, it’s known for its avocado toast, freshly-baked pastries, and rich coffee.

Nightlife and Entertainment –

Denali and the surrounding area isn’t going to be your typical city where you find clubs and bars everywhere. However, there are still some solid entertainment options available. You’ll find that the Denali Park Salmon Bake is the place to go for live music and dancing in the evening, and honestly it’s worth it!

Fannie Q’s Saloon offers more of that old-school saloon feel with a modern twist! Delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner is available and in the evening they always book talented live entertainment.

Karstens Public House is perfect if you’re a craft beer aficionado (or just enjoy a good brew). With 12 local brews on tap and fresh cocktails available, sip on something new while enjoying the view outside or chatting with the friendly locals.

For tourists, the Cabin Nite Dinner Theater is a must-see, with a top-notch musical revue about the gold rush era. Not only do they provide a show, but dinner as well. Oh, and they don’t skimp on the food! If you’re looking for a good time for the whole family, this is it.

Princess Cruises has a big influence in the area, and they have their own evening show called ‘The Music of Denali’. Each show lasts about an hour, and the dinner 2 hours. It’s a fun time and a great excuse to get dressed up.

Weather –

While Denali is undoubtedly beautiful no matter the time of year, we highly recommend going in the summer months. Summers can get to over 75 degrees Fahrenheit, but can be a bit chilly and overcast at times as well. However, during the colder months it’s outright frigid, icy, and snowy and can drop down to around -11 degrees!

Tips –

  • You can’t travel the entire Denali Park road by private vehicle. However, there are times where the weather is really nice and they open up the first 30 miles!
  • Expect any type of weather, at any time. This means we highly recommend packing a warm coat or jacket, warm gloves, head coverings, along with boots that will keep your feet dry. Even in the middle of summer, it can snow.
  • Visit the sled dogs! Did you know that Denali is the only national park that has a team of working sled dogs? If you visit during the summer you can go and see their kennels! They’re so adorable and friendly, and it’s a can’t-miss.
  • Plan for more than 1 day. Denali is just so massive and has so much to offer, you’re sure to want to go back and check out even more. Although you’ll undoubtedly see a lot through your ATV tours, you’ll likely want to go hiking or even take a bus deeper into the park.
  • ATV Tours . To see Denali from the ground there is no better way to see the park is with an ATV tour . You be able to see the wildlife and explore the park up close and personal.
