NordPass review: The VPN experts can now look after your passwords

Our Verdict

NordPass is a solid and easy to use password manager with plenty of useful features.

You may be familiar with the  NordVPN  brand, as it’s one of the most popular VPNs around and features at the top of our  best VPN chart . But, that’s not the only string to the company’s bow, as a little while back it introduced a password manager called NordPass. So, does the expertise in one field translate to another? Here’s how NordPass shapes up compared to the other Password Managers we have looked at.

NordPass may well be one of the newest password managers around, but it already feels like a mature product, with all the features you’d expect in a modern service. 

Once installed, you can import your existing passwords from Chrome or Firefox browsers or output a CSV file from your previous password manager and import this to NordPass (there are helpful instructions to help you do this). After that, you should be good to go. 

Importing existing passwords from iCloud Keychain is less simplistic but it can be done, albeit only via a Mac. To import a CSV file to NordPass click on Settings > Import Items and choose Safari. You can then upload the CSV file from iCloud Keychain.

There is also a NordPass Safari extension that you need to install if you prefer to use Safari. To add this extension to Safari click on Safari in the menu bar, choose Settings, and then open Extensions and enable the extension. You may then need to pair the extension with a 4-digit code that will be supplied.

NordPass supports biometrics, so once you’ve created your master password you will only have to enter it occasionally as a security measure, and all other times you can use Touch ID or Face ID to access your passwords.

As you’d expect, NordPass can autofill your login details on sites or apps, plus you can also store your address and credit card details so all of these will automatically populate text fields when you’re checking out, saving lots of time. 

The interface is on par with other password managers, in that you have the main Home page where you can see your passwords, plus links to other features you can set up, such as entering the data for the form-filling features mentioned above. 

Along to bottom of the screen you have tabs for various areas of the app. There’s the Browse page, where you can quickly look at, enter or edit passwords, passkeys, secure notes, credit cards, and personal details, as well as organizing them into folders.

The next option is Tools, where you’ll find the password generator. With this you can easily create long complicated passwords that are difficult to crack. There are also options to include or omit capital letters, digits or symbols, depending on what the app or site requires. 

To check on the current security level of your passwords there’s a Password Health area that lets you know if any are particularly weak or overused. 

For Premium subscribers, there’s also Email Masking, which can generate temporary emails addresses for when you’re signing up to online services that you don’t expect to use for long. It’s basically the same as the Hide My Email service Apple includes with iCloud+. 

You can also avail yourself of the Data Breach Scanner on the Premium tier, which will warn you if any of your passwords have appeared in leaks or security breaches reported online.  

Finally, Premium members can securely share passwords with others (they don’t have to be NordPass members) via links created in the app. 

NordPass is available on macOS, iOS, Android, Windows and Linux, plus there is the secure Web Vault that means you can access the information from any browser. Extensions are available on Chrome, Edge, Safari, Opera, Firefox and Brave.

To protect your data, NordPass utilizes XChaCha20 encryption, which is arguably even tougher to crack than the AES-256 variant used by most password managers. 

NordPass uses a zero-knowledge architecture, which means your data is encrypted and decrypted locally on your device, so NordPass never has access to your master password or Login details. This is a pretty standard technique and one you’ll find on most other password managers. The reason being, that even if the NordPass servers are cracked, this won’t expose your data as the encryption/decryption key required on your device. 

As mentioned above, NordPass will monitor Premium accounts to look for any reports of data breaches, so you can change your account details before they become compromised. 

Multi-factor authorization is also available, allowing you to set up further levels of security to prevent hackers. This can be via a One Time Password (OTP) being sent to your device, authenticator apps like Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator, plus a USB authenticator if you’re on a Mac or PC. 

Price & Availability

There is a free tier available on NordPass, which also has a 30-day trial of the Premium features. Then, if you want, you can stay free or pay $20.28/£19.08 p/a for a single Premium account. Should you want the Family package, which gives you six Premium accounts, then that will set you back $35.88/£35.88 p/a.

The free tier is quite good, in that it allows for unlimited passwords and passkeys, supports the autofill feature, Multifactor authorization, secure notes and the password generator. If you’re only using one device, then it’s probably most of what you need. You can sync the passwords between devices, but only one can be logged in at a time, so bear that in mind. 

Moving up to the Premium tier opens up the ability to be signed in on multiple devices, while also unlocking secure sharing, Email Masking, and the Data Breach Scanner. These are useful tools, and as the overall asking price is quite reasonable, they look like good value to us.

Should you buy NordPass?

NordPass is a solid and easy-to-use password manager that actually has a pretty decent free tier if you’re not switching between devices too often. Support for biometrics, passkeys and multifactor authentication make it secure, while the wide range of apps and extensions means it should work on all your device. It’s reasonably priced too. Good work Nord!

NordPass is a solid password management option with all of the tools you’d expect, though it also has a simple, intuitive design. NordPass has caught up to competitors in some ways: it launched a web vault and standalone browser extension as well as biometric login support across platforms, and it removed device limits for its premium tier. NordPass also offers passkey support across its desktop and mobile apps, web vault, and a handful of browser extensions. 

At $45 per year, NordPass does cost more than similar password managers like 1Password, Keeper and LastPass (all around $35 annually), though the price has actually dropped since our last review, and frequent promotions can cut the fee significantly. NordPass does have a free tier which includes most of its features, the primary limitation being that you can only be logged in on one device at a time.

While NordPass’s setup process is a bit roundabout, the user experience is consistent across platforms. Our NordPass review will help you decide if this is the best password manager for you or if you’d be better off with another one instead.

NordPass review: Costs and what's covered

NordPass has two paid tiers and a free plan. NordPass Premium costs $44.85 per year, while NordPass Family (for up to six Premium users) comes to $89.85 per year. As noted above, this is a tad pricier than most premium password managers, which charge about $35 per year. However, NordPass offers frequent sales as well as a discount on two-year plans. 

The exception is Dashlane , which charges $60 for a premium account. But Dashlane Premium bundles in dark-web monitoring and unlimited VPN service, whereas NordPass doesn't seem to offer any discount for NordVPN .

NordPass Free comes with the most basic functions of a password manager, including unlimited password storage; autofill for passwords, forms, identities and payments; passkey support; secure notes; and multifactor authentication. The biggest limitation with the free tier is that you can stay logged in only on one device at a time. 

So while you can use NordPass Free on a phone, tablet and computer — and your vaults will sync automatically — logging into your account on one device will log you out on all the others. While this may be slightly inconvenient, it's still more flexible than free plans that limit you to one or two devices in total, or to a certain number of passwords. 

With an upgrade to NordPass Premium, you get sharing capabilities and basic security monitoring for old, weak or reused passwords as well as for those exposed in data breaches. NordPass previously limited premium users to six devices at a time but now allows unlimited simultaneous logins. 

NordPass Premium also includes 3 GB of secure online storage, passkey sharing, and Emergency Access capabilities. NordPass even has a 30-day free trial of the Premium tier that you can claim in the app, and there is a 30-day refund policy.

The Family plan simply bundles six Premium accounts. It's a decent value at $89.85 annually for households with older children or college students or even a group of friends, since the vaults are not linked together. But again, LastPass for Families costs just over half as much.

NordPass supports Windows 10 and up for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems, macOS 11 and up and any Linux distribution that supports snap 64 bit. There is no desktop app for Chrome OS, but you can always access the Web Vault. Browser extensions are available for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Brave, Opera and Edge, and there are mobile apps for iOS (15.0 or later) and Android (9.0 and up). 

I reviewed NordPass using a 2020 MacBook Air running macOS 12.7.1 Monterey, an iPhone 15 Pro running iOS 17.1.1 and Google Chrome . 

NordPass review: Setup

To get started with NordPass, you have to download the desktop application (or the mobile app), after which you'll be prompted with a pop-up to create an account. This will take you back to the website to create a Nord account, which is a centralized login for all of Nord's services (VPN and secure document storage, for example).

It's a bit clunky and unfortunately requires you to have two separate passwords. Once you have a Nord account, you can go back to the NordPass app and log in.

From there, you'll create a master password for NordPass. Make sure to save this somewhere secure. You should also go ahead and generate a recovery code (Settings > Reset Recovery Code), which you'll need to access your vault if you forget your master password.

NordPass does not have a detailed onboarding process, but you can tap the Get Started tab in the left-hand menu to view basic setup options, such as adding or importing passwords and enabling a browser extension.

To add an item to your vault, you can import from a handful of other browsers and password managers or upload a CSV. You can also add individual logins, passkeys, payment methods or identities.

On mobile, you'll again need to log into your main Nord account to be redirected to entering your NordPass master password in the app. You can opt to use an emailed verification code instead of your Nord account credentials. Once you're logged in, though, you can go to Profile > Settings and enable biometrics (if not already prompted to do so) if you want to skip entering your master password each time you access the app.

Both the browser extension and mobile app synced automatically from my desktop vault. Remember that with a free NordPass account, logging in on mobile will log you out of the desktop app and vice versa.

NordPass review: Desktop

On the desktop, NordPass is available as a standalone app, a browser extension and a web-based vault. The interface is consistent across the desktop, browser extension and mobile environments, making it easy to find what you’re looking for no matter where you access your vault. 

In August 2023, NordPass released a fully featured browser extension that works without the desktop app — many functions will open in a tab that mirrors the Web Vault. If you install the desktop-paired extension, it will redirect you to the desktop app for those functions, such as manually adding logins, sharing items, changing your settings, and viewing your password health and data-breach reports. Note that only one extension can be enabled at a time. 

The Web Vault, as NordPass calls it, lacks the ability to autofill and autosave passwords and other items, so you'll want to have the desktop app or the full-feature browser extension installed on at least one of your machines.

The desktop app has a left-justified menu where you can select and view specific login types as well as notes and shared items. You can organize your data into folders or view your trash, which saves items until you permanently delete them. 

You can edit, copy or organize an item from the main vault list (tap the three dots next to the item name) or by clicking on and opening the individual item. You can add an item manually from any screen in your vault using the button at the top-right corner. Open your settings, including biometric unlock, multi-factor authentication, and autofill/autosave, using the gear icon at the top of the menu.

At the bottom of the menu are your Tools, including your password generator and security reports, the latter of which is a Premium-only feature. Password Health shows you old, weak and compromised passwords and links you out to the websites needed to change them, while the Data Breach Scanner tells you if anything in your vault, including credit cards, has been leaked online. You can also see password strength within each item's listing.

NordPass has a premium feature called Emergency Access for trusted contacts, which lets you designate certain other NordPass users, such as friends or family members, viewing access to your NordPass account if you fail to respond to an access request for seven days. (Other password managers let you adjust the waiting period.)

The browser extension defaults to a screen showing all of your logins, though you can open the hamburger menu to select a specific category or folder.

To autofill your login or payment info, you must have the browser extension enabled. The NordPass icon will appear in the form field on any website for which you have a saved credential (or if it detects a payment or identity field). Simply tap the icon and select the correct login. There are no keyboard shortcuts for the extension.

When creating a new account, NordPass will automatically open the password generator and an autosave pop-up menu for adding your credentials to your vault, a process that worked smoothly (albeit eagerly, with the pop-up appearing a few times even after closing out). You can tap the Show Options dropdown to change the password strength requirements. NordPass will also prompt you to update an existing password upon login if Password Health detects your password is weak or has been reused.

To share an item, toggle the three dots next to the login and select Share. You can enter the email address of the recipient and select permission levels. View and manage this in the Shared Items tab on the main menu.

Finally, one handy feature of the extension and desktop app, especially if you share your machine, is autolock. Go to Settings > Security to select how long you want the app to remain open before requiring your master password (as little as five minutes to as long as one month).

NordPass review: Mobile apps

On mobile, NordPass looks similar to the browser extension, though it has full functionality for adding credentials, sharing items and accessing settings and security-monitoring tools. 

You'll find all the same menu options under the Browse tab and your main vault screen on the Home screen. Tools houses your security-monitoring options, and Profile directs you to your settings (including biometrics and MFA setup).

To use autofill on mobile, you'll have to enable NordPass as your primary password manager in your phone settings. If you have a saved login for a website or app, a NordPass menu will pop up and allow you to select the correct credential.

When creating a new account on a website, you'll have to go back to the NordPass app to generate a password, copy it and paste it in the app or on the website. You'll also have to manually create a login in the app, as it will not autosave from a mobile browser. That said, I did appreciate how easy it was to access NordPass’s password generator on mobile.

NordPass review: Security

NordPass uses XChaCha20 encryption, which secures your password vault with 256-bit keys. Like most password managers, NordPass is zero-knowledge, so only you can see your data on your local device when you enter your master password. Your vault is never accessible to NordPass employees or hackers via the company's servers. The platform underwent its first security audit in early 2020. 

Multi-factor authentication is available for both free and paid NordPass accounts with one-time password generators, including Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy and Duo. You can also set up MFA to work with any U2F hardware key, such as YubiKey. 

Supported biometric login options on NordPass include FaceID and Touch ID on iOS and macOS devices, Windows Hello and biometric unlock on Android.

NordPass does offer account recovery with a code you can generate in your settings, but you must do this prior to losing your master password, or you'll be locked out of your vault (since you need your password to create the code initially). NordPass support can reset your account, but all of your saved items will be deleted in the process. 

NordPass review: Passkeys

NordPass supports passkey creation, storage, and synching on all desktop and mobile applications, Firefox and Chrome browser extensions, and the web vault. When you sign up for a new account for which a passkey is an option, you’ll be prompted to create one and save it in your vault. If you have an existing login for a site that supports passkeys, you can change your password to a passkey in your account settings. Unlike 1Password , NordPass does not identify existing accounts in your vault for which passkeys are available. 

Passkeys provide higher security than passwords because they aren’t stored in a way that can be accessed or compromised in a data breach. If you have a passkey enabled with your login, the site will use a public key to request that you authenticate this private key, typically using biometrics. 

All NordPass users, including those on free plans, have passkey support. NordPass is expecting to introduce passkey sign-in for its services at some point in the future. 

NordPass review: Bottom line 

NordPass offers a solid user experience (other than the initial setup process) and is closer in terms of features and price with the likes of 1Password, Keeper and LastPass than in our previous review. However, it still costs slightly more with no significant leg up in form or function, and it doesn’t include extras like its NordVPN service, as Dashlane does. 

The NordPass free tier is more flexible and full-featured than those offered by Dashlane, Keeper and LastPass, which have stricter device sync limits. But users looking for a low- or no-cost password manager may want to consider Bitwarden , which offers unlimited syncing for free users and charges just $10 per year for its premium plan.

NordSec, the same company behind the well-known NordVPN , has a password manager called NordPass . As a result, it has come to the world's attention with the same aggressive marketing tactics; let's see if it lives up to its hype.

Overall, NordVPN belongs among the best password managers , though only by its fingernails. As a business option, it's one of the best out there, but its offerings for individuals fall flat, mainly thanks to a confusing and slightly misleading pricing scheme.

When it comes to pricing, NordPass falls more or less within the same range as the competition, though it's far from straightforward to figure out. There are different plans, and, like with NordVPN, the price for first-time users is significantly lower than for anybody renewing their subscription.

The first and maybe most interesting plan is the free one, which offers all the basic functionality you'd expect from a password manager. You can store all the passwords and other data you'd like, with the only downside being a minor annoyance that you're signed out whenever you switch devices.

The paid plan removes this annoyance and adds a password as well as a web scanner, which detects if any of your accounts have been breached. However, there are some issues with pricing. For example, if you decide to sign up for the regular plan for just one year, you pay just south of $24, which is a great price.

However, when you renew, you pay just under $36, which is more or less the same as what other password managers charge. Like with its siblings NordVPN and Surfshark , you need to look a little beyond the sticker price with NordPass to see what it will cost a little further down the road. This is even more important if you sign on for the two-year plan.

At just under $36, NordPass' two year-plan is a great deal. However, when you renew it, the password manager costs $72, which is double the one-year plan. Sure, you're saving money on the first go-around, but I think NordPass should be a little clearer that it's just a one-time thing and you're on the hook for the whole thing once the initial term expires.

The Family plan suffers from the same issues but stands out in that it's more expensive than the competition. Its "real" price is $72 per year, which gives you the same functionality of the regular plan only for up to six people. At this price, it's more expensive than 1Password and almost double Bitwarden's.

Dashlane is a bit more expensive at $75 per year but includes a VPN for that price, making that the better choice by far for people trying to squeeze the most out of their subscriptions.

Is NordPass Included With NordVPN?

Speaking of VPNs, naturally, you can also buy a bundle that includes both NordVPN and NordPass. Interestingly enough, NordVPN is the primary product, so you buy that and get NordPass included, not the other way around.

For the details of that pricing, you may want to check out my NordVPN review , but overall I'm not blown away by the value on offer here. There are some more shenanigans here, with steep discounts on first-time signup, but the real price starts at $160 per year and goes higher---a lot higher---from there.

In a market where you can get cheap VPNs like Private Internet Access for $40 per year and even cheaper password managers like Bitwarden for $10 per year, paying $160 is just too much by any stretch of the imagination.

NordPass Business Plans

Finally, NordPass also offers a Business plan. It costs $3.99 per user per month if you sign up for one year or $3.59 per user per month on the two-year plan, without any re-up issues like with the personal plans. For this price, you can have up to 250 users per plan, and you get access to a company-wide dashboard and settings, plus SSO through Google Workspace.

Overall, this is a pretty good deal. It's a good whack cheaper than most other password managers' business plans, which start around $5 per user per month but can get as high as $8. That said, different providers throw in different extras with these advanced plans, so you should definitely shop around before making any decisions.

There is also an Enterprise plan which offers more SSO options, plus some other advanced sharing features. The price you'll need to negotiate with NordPass.

As much as I dislike NordPass' pricing scheme, I have to say its ease of use is pretty good, though I found it a little less smooth than some other password managers. Part of this is unique to NordPass: For some reason, the developers insist that you have to have a client running on your desktop to use it rather than the web client most competitors use.

The client is available for Windows , Mac , and Linux . However, I had some pretty serious issues getting it to work on my Debian system (Mint 20.3, to be exact). After having the app crash more than once, I switched to my backup Windows machine, where it worked a lot better, though I did have to restart Windows 11 twice. NordPass doesn't get high marks for stability.

Besides desktop, NordPass can also be used on mobile devices, namely Android and iPhone/iPad . I had far fewer issues here, I have to say, so maybe the desktop issues have more to do with the relative novelty of the OSes involved.

The NordPass Client

Once you get it working, the client is pretty good. The presentation is slick, with clear categories for all the different kinds of items you can add, like passwords, secure notes, credit cards, and more. I also like how NordPass gets you familiar with the program using a small checklist of tasks.

The whole thing feels a lot more polished than most other password managers, with even top-shelf providers like Dashlane feeling like throwbacks to an earlier era. However, it's all surface level, and once you start digging, you'll find there's not much beyond that initial impression.

NordPass presents entries well in a simple list that gives you a decent summary of what's going on. That said, there don't seem to be any organization options to speak of for each category, meaning that if you have more than a few password entries, you're going to have to search for them manually. There are no tags like in 1Password .

The closest thing to organization is that you can add folders, but they exist outside of the set options. For example, I created a folder for all the media sites I have an account with, but it's not nested under the passwords label, instead existing alongside it. It makes it hard to organize your passwords.

There are also few options for the entries themselves. Most password managers give you the option to add all kinds of notes, or add extra security---or even let some passwords be used automatically. None of that with NordPass. You get to add a username, password, and a few custom options, and that's it, pretty much.

As a result, NordPass is very easy for beginners to get to grasp with. Some of our favorites like Dashlane or 1Password---not to mention KeePassXC --- can be a bit intimidating for first-time users. However, I feel NordPass has swung too far the other way, offering a program that's just too light.

Autofill and Other Features

Of course, no password manager would be complete without a browser extension. In the case of NordPass, the extension is available for Chrome , Microsoft Edge , Mozilla Firefox , Opera , and Safari . It's extremely lightweight, offering no menu or anything, all it does is pop up a small NordPass icon on any empty login field.

I have to say, the autofill function works very well and is pretty reliable. Also, since NordPass never seems to switch itself off, you only need to unlock once per device session, so it saves some hassle.

Other basics that NordPass has included are the now-ubiquitous breach scanner, which scans the web to see if any of your personal details have shown up in breached files. It mainly seems to check if your email accounts are associated with a hack, as far as I can tell.

There's also a password checker that lets you know if your password is strong or weak and how to fix any issues. It seems to have a strong preference for symbols in passwords, but it's solid overall.

Overall, NordPass seems to be a secure place to keep your passwords. It stores all the information you enter, be it passwords, credit card details, or personal data, in a personalized vault, which is encrypted with the XChaCha20 algorithm . On its site, NordPass claims this algorithm is "considered the future of encryption," though it doesn't specify who is doing that considering.

That said, though it's not a very widely used encryption method, XChaCha20 seems secure and is used in all kinds of applications. The best example is probably that it's a popular way to secure Shadowsocks connections.

However, the proof in any pudding is in the tasting, which in the case of password managers is to take a look at their history. NordPass aces this test with no breaches or scandals to speak of in its history.

Other products from the same company also have few blemishes on their record, though NordVPN suffered a small breach in 2018 . In this case, a hacker gained access to encrypted files. Though customer data wasn't at risk---encrypted files are useless without a password---the company failed to disclose the breach until a few years later.

Though it's not a deal breaker in my view, I can understand if you would prefer to deal with a company that's a bit more willing to admit mistakes. Other than that, though, I see no reason not to use NordPass for security reasons.

NordPass has a good interface and decent security behind it. However, the lack of organization and the increased price following your initial subscription period makes it hard to recommend. As it stands, NordPass doesn't have anything that makes it stand out in a good way except for companies looking for a cheap password solution. Anybody else may want to look elsewhere.

NordPass review: Affordable, streamlined password management

Our Verdict

NordPass makes managing and syncing your passwords easy, with new features that make it stand out among rivals. Its free plan feels generous in current times, and its paid plans are priced well below competitors. If you don’t mind an semi-inconvenient login process, you’ll be hard-pressed to find an alternative that’s as simple and affordable.

For a newer service, NordPass is downright old-school — in the best possible way. Since we last reviewed this password manager from the maker of NordVPN, the landscape has changed. Paid subscriptions got more expensive, and heavier restrictions fell upon free plans. Meanwhile, NordPass went the opposite route and didn’t pare back. Instead, it kept its prices low, added more features to its premium plan, and left its free tier intact.

NordPass is available as a browser extension (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, Brave, and Safari), an Android or iOS mobile app, and desktop apps for Windows , macOS, and Linux. Nord favors the browser extension — when you sign up on a computer, that’s what you’re steered to. Only the mobile apps are linked to within the browser interface, too. Downloading the desktop apps requires an online search. For this review, I used the desktop software for Windows 10, the browser extension in Chrome, and the Android app.

Nord requires a double login for its password manager. During setup, you first create a Nord account. Then you choose a separate master password to secure your vault. It decrypts the login info (and other entries) saved to the password manager. In theory, this system makes accessing Nord services (including NordVPN) easier, while still keeping your saved credentials safe. But in practice, I found it cumbersome since I wasn’t using NordVPN or NordLocker , the company’s secure cloud storage service. You can reduce this friction if you choose to use biometric authentication (like a fingerprint) to unlock your browser extension or mobile app, but you can’t eliminate it completely.

NordPass also supports two-factor authentication across all plans, with an authenticator app, backup codes, and hardware keys as your options.

After the signup process, you can import passwords from your browser or another service into NordPass. To do so, you must upload a CSV file — the app no longer offers to automatically pull in passwords saved to your browser. Browsers and password managers will let you export a CSV, but you can also create your own, so long as it follows these guidelines . On a PC, you’ll drag and drop the CSV file into the import window, and then wait. It’s a seamless process.

No matter the platform, NordPass’ interface is still clean and simple, while still looking modern. On PC, the layout is split between a left sidebar and a main panel. The sidebar houses all app features, with account info, notifications, and settings icons and a search bar tucked up at the very top. Underneath are three sections: Categories , Folders , and Tools . The Android app is organized similarly, but with a bottom navigation bar.

Within Categories, you’ll find All Items , Passwords , Passkeys , Secure Notes , Credit Cards , Personal Info , Shared Items , and Trash . For Passwords, Secure Notes, Credit Cards, and Personal Info, you can view, add, and edit items, while for Passkeys, you can view and edit. To add a passkey, you must create one on a website directly and allow NordPass to capture it. Each entry type is simple: Credit card entries contain just payment info, for example — you’ll create identities with contact info separately within Personal Info. However, NordPass has added the ability to add custom fields to password, secure note, credit card, and personal info entries since we last saw it, which keeps them from being too bare-bones.

On paid plans, you can attach files of any kind to all item types, up to 50MB per file and up to 50 files per entry. The total amount of storage you get is 3GB.

Shared Items shows items that you’ve shared with others (if you’re a paid user), or have been shared with you (all users). You can only share with other NordPass users — if you send an entry to an email address not affiliated with an account, they’ll have to sign up to see it. The feature isn’t as good as with other password managers, since recipients can only see a password if you share with full editing rights. Limited rights only shows the email address or user name, which isn’t helpful. These permissions could use more attention from Nord; limited rights should let users see a password, but not edit them.

During daily use, NordPass behaves similarly to its best competition. It offers to fill in saved login info (or use a saved passkey) on sites it recognizes. For credentials you haven’t saved yet, it asks to capture the details after you enter the info. And though NordPass doesn’t always recognize every account creation page (it often treats signups with separate pages as forms to autofill), when it does, it suggests email masks (a feature within the app that creates unique aliases for your email address) and passwords to use. When this automation works, it’s smooth.

NordPass generates unique, complex passwords of up to 60 characters, which is less than some competitors — Bitwarden can create passwords as long as 128 characters, for example. But 60 still is more than adequate. Many sites still recommend just 16 characters, while some security experts suggest between 20 to 32. These days, two-factor authentication or the use of a passkey will provide more protection than a very long password.

For quicker access to your saved passwords (and other entries), you can organize them by adding them to folders. You can create as many folders as you want. I used them to group related items (like “Work”), which made setting up new devices faster. I didn’t have to search individually for the relevant accounts.

NordPass’ Password Health tool scans your vault for old, weak, and reused passwords so you can change them.

Since we last evaluated NordPass, its lineup of premium tools have expanded, putting it on more equal footing with more established password managers. These are only available to customers on paid plans, like the individual or family subscriptions.

Previously, the company offered just two utilities. Password Health scans for weak, reused, and old passwords. If any are found, you’ll see the entry in a list — clicking on it takes you to that website so you can change the password. Once you update it to something more secure, NordPass will capture it.

Note: Flagging passwords that haven’t been changed in awhile is an old, outdated security practice, meant for when people used ones that were short, easily guessed. But with NordPass or any other password manager, you can generate long, random, and unique character strings that shouldn’t need frequent updating. Only change them when you suspect they’ve been compromised.

The Data Breach Scanner trawls the web for any of your website or credit card accounts caught in a breach or leak. Any results that appear will list what information was compromised, like your password, birth date, phone number, or IP address, along with details about the breach. For known sites, you’ll also see a button that sends you there so you can change your password.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find an alternative that offers such a simple, easy-to-use interface with such affordable prices.

Two additional features join the lineup. Emergency Access lets you designate other users that can request access to your passwords. You can immediately grant or deny the request, but if you don’t respond, your passwords will automatically become available for viewing to them after seven days. This feature allows family, friends, and other trusted individuals to be able to conduct business on your behalf if you’re incapacitated or otherwise unavailable. When I tested this feature, permissions changed instantly — both for adding trusted contacts, as well as granting and revoking access.

Email masking creates aliases for your real email address (which Nord assumes is the same as the one you used to sign up for NordPass). Any messages sent to one of these masks gets forwarded to your actual email account. You can create a total of 200 email masks on Premium or Family plans, and up to 30 per day. As mentioned above, NordPass can suggest an email mask when signing up on a new website. You can also create email masks within the apps or the browser extension. Managing these aliases consists of turning forwarding on or off, and deleting them. For the most part, this is a great feature, but Nord could improve on it by allowing users to upgrade to a higher number of masks. Heavy internet users can easily have several hundred (if not more) logins.

NordPass’ pricing tiers are somewhat unusual in 2024. For starters, its free plan remains fairly unrestricted. You can save unlimited passwords and passkeys, and the data syncs across different device types. Other premium password managers with free tiers have slashed the number of entries, with Dashlane having cut to 25 in fall 2023 and Keeper forcing users to cull to a ruthless 10 as of March 1. You’re not restricted to just one type of device either, as LastPass does. The main restriction is that you can be logged into only one device at a time, but you can move between them freely. You also don’t get access to file attachments, sharing (sending passwords to others), and the Password Health, Data Breach Scanner, Emergency Access, and Email Masking features.

To get these perks, you’ll need to pay for a Premium or Family plan. Currently, NordPass offers a special rate to new Premium users of just $35 if you sign up for two years ($1.30 per month), or $26 for one year ($1.70 per month). Family plans run $67 for two years and $45 for one year. For comparison, Dashlane is $60 per year for individual plans, Keeper is $35 per year, and 1Password is $36 per year. Bitwarden is the only rival password manager that offers more value, with no limits on password creation or device usage for free users, and a cost of just $10 per year for its paid plan. But its interface is not as user friendly.

Overall, NordPass is intuitive, and using it is a polished, seamless experience. Its free plan is a throwback to when companies were more generous with features, and its paid plans now sport the kind of advanced features that make them comparable to similar rivals. If you don’t mind the inconvenience of its double-login system, you’ll be hard-pressed to find an alternative that offers such a simple, easy-to-use interface with such affordable prices.

I've been using NordPass for a while now, and I couldn't be happier with it. The ease of use is remarkable; I can manage all my passwords and credit cards effortlessly. Think twice before giving these people money

My account wasn’t going to expire or anything but I got a notice offering 2 years for $35. The deal only gave me one year, or rather the two years were put in place of the year I payed for shorting me one year. I have sent 3 emails to support and haven’t received a response. Just rich people who could care less after they have your money. They don’t respond to emails or give refunds so think twice. The app it self has a few annoyances. It has two log in screens. A lengthy initial process to sign you into your account, then a second Lock Screen password it randomly requires you to enter(always at the worst time). Every day the app is completely signed out and requires me to do the super lengthy log in. This is super annoying. A lot of times I’ll leave it signed out because I can’t go through the annoying process of logging in at all times always. It uses cookies to keep you logged in so private browsing or clearing your cookies prevents your login from saving. What kind of security app requires me to leave my cookies indefinitely? It’s crazy cause nord vpn is so good. Wherever right? Im in it for two years regardless. If you do decide to subscribe , unsubscribe from their news letter. The deals actually lose you money anyway.

Stable and easy to use across multiple devices

I have a lot of gadgets and a lot of accounts and a lot of passwords for those accounts. I am also completely incapable of remembering any of those passwords. I originally got NordPass in 2020, and I've never encountered any issues that couldn't be fixed with a quick search online. It works on my Apple/iOS devices and Windows computers seamlessly, so it's easy to save info in one location and access it everywhere. I imported my saved passwords from a few different locations, and I've been able to be more careful and organized than I was before. I like the Password Generator. There's settings to make passwords with random characters and punctuation, but I prefer the one that provides random words separated by punctuation. It's easier to read and type them when I'm in a situation where copy-paste isn't possible (like logging in on a TV or on websites that don't allow it.) There's also a Password Health feature that I need to actually use one of these days. I have old duplicate passwords from when I was younger and lazier. I'm definitely regretting it now, but I know I have a tool that will help me find those accounts and fix them once I have time to sit down and do it.

Indeed, the firm boasts its own encryption algorithms, a zero-knowledge architecture, multi-factor authentication, and more.

NordPass: Plans and pricing

There is a free tier with NordPass, which isn't always a given with password managers. It gets you storage for an unlimited number of passwords which you can access from anywhere, but you’ll only be allowed one signed-in session at a time, so if you alternate between your phone and your computer, you’ll be kicked out each time you change device. It won't detect weak or reused passwords, and it won't scan the web for data breaches, which some competitor companies do even at this free level.

The Premium account turns all of those features on and costs $2.99 / £2.39 per month, for annual commitments. It also allows you to use trusted sharing, which grants access to trusted contacts in case of emergencies. 

The top personal tier is the Family plan, which starts at $5.99 / £4.79 per month. You'll get six accounts with this product alongside all of the features included with the Premium product. Both of these plans are also available with two-year commitments, which means you can save a bit more money if you’re willing to pay upfront.

It’s also worth mentioning that some countries, including major markets like Australia and Canada, will see pricing in USD$. Despite this, billing will still occur in local currencies.

NordPass's standard Business product starts costs $3.59 per user per month and can handle up to 250 users, so it's ideal for small and medium businesses. This time, it’s advertised in USD$ globally, but each country will pay in local currencies. You get all of the features we've mentioned before alongside a security dashboard, the option to deploy company-wide settings, and Google Workplace SSO. The business product also includes team management features, like company-wide settings deployment and real-time monitoring.

The conventional business product doesn’t come with a dedicated account manager or face-to-face onboarding. If you'd like those features, more SSO options, and user provisioning via Active Directory, you'll need the Enterprise product and you'll have to contact NordPass directly to get a quote.

In all cases, you may be able to get a bigger discount via the NordPass promo codes currently available. 

Unfortunately, Nord Security doesn’t offer bundles with its VPN service , NordVPN, which is in our eyes a missed opportunity because some other companies like Dashlane do.

NordPass: Setup

It's very easy to get started with NordPass. Download the app from the firm's website, create an account with a master password, and you're good to go. You're able to import passwords from any big-name browser and directly from a CSV file. Nordpass will also import your passwords from other password managers, including popular apps like LastPass, Remembear , and RoboForm . Indeed, ten different products are supported.

Like most of its competition, there are Windows, macOS, and Linux versions of the NordPass desktop client so you should be catered for whichever sort of user or business you are. There are iOS and Android mobile apps, too.

It also includes browser extensions for Chrome , Firefox , Edge , Opera , Safari , and Brave . The only real thing missing here is the Command Line options you'll encounter on techier software, like Bitwarden.

NordPass: Interface and performance

Everything about the NordPass interface is smooth and elegant, from the initial sign-up page to the apps you'll install as you get the software set up – it's actually one of the most polished experiences we've seen, and the same its true of other Nord Security products. Everything is built to be user-friendly and accessible, so it's a password manager that will suit users at all levels of technical know-how.

The software does a really good job of hiding itself away in the background and only popping up discreetly when needed, and we had no complaints in terms of getting our passwords synced across multiple devices (it only takes a second or two usually).

The helpful touches spread throughout were much appreciated. You can customize generated passwords by length or by turning off characters that can be misread as something else, for example). Following this theme, you can even streamline online shopping by letting NordPass input your credit card details and shipping info for a smoother checkout. It’s even possible to switch between different Nordpass accounts without compromising your security, so if you need to manage work and personal life separately, it’s easily done.

When it comes to managing your account, logging in and accessing your settings, passwords, and other stored information is very straightforward. We appreciate the clean interface that is well laid out, and easy to use.

Previously, we mentioned that it would be nice to be able to tag or otherwise sort different types of credentials, but this has now been addressed. Folders allow you to separate categories, for example social media, online shopping, and banking. 

There’s a separate area for payment details, but it would be a nice addition to see a dedicated area for IDs, such as driving licenses and passports. These are the sorts of documents that you don’t carry every day, but when booking a flight, you might unexpectedly need to call on them.

The app's extra features are just as easy to use. Look to the bottom-right of the app and you'll find a password generator , password health assessment module, and a data breach scanner , and they're all as straightforward as the app's main functions. 

NordPass: Passkeys

As more and more websites begin to add passkeys as a login option, password managers are beginning to commit to their adoption, but NordPass has actually already integrated passkey support, making it one of the first.

The desktop application, NordPass Web Vault, and Firefox and Chrome-based browser extensions are already compatible with passkeys, but Safari users will have to wait for a future release to be included. Mobile support is also coming as soon as software makers open up passkeys to third parties.

Passkeys are saved in a separate location from regular passwords, and chances are you’ll still have a vault full of passwords for a long time to come because the few websites that are adopting passkeys are just using them as secondary login methods.

Passkey login and passwordless authentication for accessing NordPass is also in the works, but details are limited at the moment.

NordPass: Security

As you would expect from a developer that also offers a VPN, NordPass has a tight security setup. For a start it deploys a zero-knowledge approach, with end-to-end encryption for your password backups and data syncing – that means not even the NordPass team can see the data that you've got saved.

The increasingly well-respected XChaCha20 encryption algorithm is used, which is also a favorite of companies like Google and Cloudflare: it goes up to 256-bit encryption and is seen (by some at least) as a more future-proof solution than the AES-256 encryption commonly used elsewhere.

Biometric security can be added where supported – FaceID or Touch ID on Apple hardware, Windows Hello on a Windows machine, or a fingerprint reader for other smartphones. Two-factor authentication is supported for your NordPass account and the accounts you're storing passwords for. You're also able to use OTP generators or USB sticks to activate multi-factor authentication for added security.

NordPass also operated a blog which it uses to publicize important security tips alongside product announcements. The most common passwords page is particularly revealing, and even some less obvious passwords are at risk of being guessed in a matter of seconds.

NordPass: Support

The customer support is fairly standard – you get round-the-clock email support, but there's no way to call directly. You can live chat to agents who work in the sales department, but they are unable to help with technical queries. 

The various online options are good though, including a very well laid out help center which should answer most basic questions.

NordPass is one of the most prominent password managers around and, as such, it faces loads of strong competition. Apps like LastPass are good alternatives with similar feature sets and pricing structures, and you'd be well-served by either of those tools.

If you'd like something more affordable but admittedly more basic, a product like mSecure will get the job done – it doesn't have the business options or the high-end features of NordPass, but it ticks mainstream boxes and it's cheaper.

If you’re after the security associated with a company that’s also made a name for itself in the VPN world, then Dashlane or Proton Pass would be good alternatives.

NordPass: Final verdict

We're impressed with what we've seen of NordPass during our testing, and we think it's a great choice for individuals and small-to-mid-sized companies. It balances an aesthetically pleasing design with some useful features and advanced security protection, and it holds up well when you compare it against anything else on the market.

Pricing is competitive, and it's nice to see a free tier available. Negatively, it doesn't have more advanced tools like Wi-Fi syncing and Dark Web scanning, but that shouldn't put you off unless you're looking for a password manager with every possible feature.
