Crosieurope had nice food, plenty of beer and wine, very clean boat - both inside and out. Staff were very nice and helpful, always cleaning windows, carpet, etc. The administration staff were a bit at times disorganised. Sometimes they would forget to give message in English after they delivered Message in French.

Luxury Cruises to the Eastern Mediterranean
From its stunning coastline and ancient architecture to its famous cuisine and charming culture, cruising through the Eastern Mediterranean is one of the most rewarding vacations you’ll ever experience.
On one of our luxury European cruises to the Eastern Mediterranean, you’ll discover incredible ports in Israel, Croatia, Greece, Malta, Turkey, Slovenia, Montenegro, and Italy. Stroll alongside the white-washed buildings of Santorini. Explore the walled city of Dubrovnik. Marvel at historic landmarks in Istanbul. Or visit one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World in Ephesus. There’s no shortage of beauty and wonder awaiting during an Eastern Mediterranean cruise.
Eastern Mediterranean Cruise Highlights
Ancient ruins.
Explore fascinating historical treasures on a cruise to the Eastern Mediterranean. In Athens, visit the famous ruins of the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena that dates back to 438 BC. Step inside Diocletian’s Palace in Split, a sprawling fort built for a Roman emperor in the fourth century. During an overnight stay in Jerusalem, see famous religious landmarks including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the scene of Jesus’ resurrection, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, two sacred Muslim sites.
Greek Sunsets
You’ll never forget the first time you witness one of Greece’s legendary sunsets. Oia, a picturesque town on the island of Santorini, and Zakynthos, a small island surrounded by impossibly blue waters, are both considered some of the best spots in the world to see the sun go down. Make your way up a cliffside restaurant or viewing point and watch as the sky transforms into a canvas of pink, orange, and purple hues in the distance.
Mediterranean Cuisine
Feast your senses on the delicious food and drink of this magical region. Explore the unique flavors of Eastern Europe during your days in port, where you’ll dine in seaside restaurants, wander through charming local markets, and sip some of the best wines in the world. Enjoy grilled fish and fresh octopus in Greece. Order a plate of black risotto, a Croatian specialty, in Split or Dubrovnik. While in Israel, eat as much hummus, falafel, and baba ganoush as your heart desires.
Featured Ports
Sail into the sparkling coast of Dubrovnik, a chic Croatian port known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic.” Walk around the well-preserved city walls and admire the scenic terracotta rooftops. Feast on Croatian wine and oysters, two of the region’s delicacies. Visit the Rector’s Palace, a stunningly restored Gothic building. Enjoy a leisurely bike ride around a nearby village, then lounge under the sun at one of Dubrovnik’s lovely sandy beaches.
You’ll fall head over heels with Santorini as soon as you step foot on this idyllic Greek Island, where winding alleys are surrounded by white-washed buildings, blooming flowers, and spectacular views of the Ionian Sea. Explore the cliffside villages of Fira and Oia and their cafes, restaurants, and blue-domed churches. Sail around the island’s scenic half-moon-shaped bay while marveling at a volcanic caldera. Or lounge under the sun and dip your toes in one of Santorini’s famous black sand beaches.
East meets West in Istanbul, a cosmopolitan city located between Europe and Asia that combines the best of both worlds. Learn all about the rich history of iconic landmarks like the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. Go shopping at the labyrinth Grand Bazaar, where you’ll find all sorts of handmade treasures. Sip on a glass of Turkish tea by the Bosphorus, the body of water that separates the European and Asian sides of the city.
Eastern Mediterranean Cruise Itineraries
The Eastern Mediterranean cruise season begins in late May and lasts until mid-October. You’ll find everything from 6-night jaunts around Croatia, Greece, and Montenegro and 7-night sailings that stop in Italy, Malta, and Croatia, to lengthier journeys around the area, including 10-night cruises to Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro and 12-night journeys around Turkey and the Greek Islands. Most of our Eastern Mediterranean cruises spend only a day at sea, giving you plenty of time to explore the region in depth.

About Booking This Tour
Travel Documents
If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany and The Netherlands. You are not required to obtain a visa to enter any of the countries visited for the short duration of this tour.
If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands to determine what travel documentation is required.
International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the riverboat, your passport will be held by the purser temporarily to make copies.
Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.
You will be issued a boarding card, which you must present before embarking the ship in each port. This security measure also ensures that only Tauck guests are permitted onboard.
We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.
To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.
Note Regarding Crossing Borders between non-Schengen Countries: In order to clear customs at the non-Schengen ports, the Reception staff will take your passport during the cruise in order to show local authorities as we pass borders. Occasionally you will need to come to the front desk to have your identify quickly crossed checked with your passport by the authorities. The process is quick and efficient and there is no need for declarations, etc.
TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

What To Pack
Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .
Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Many days are spent outside or in transit. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.
During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual. Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men. For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable. For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers. Your journey also includes one or two special occasion dinners, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested. (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)
Bathrobes, slippers and hairdryers are provided in each guest room at the hotel and in each cabin on board the riverboat.
Irons and ironing boards are either located in your hotel guest room or are available immediately upon request. Ironing facilities are available on the riverboat by request to the front desk. Category 7 suites feature their own irons and ironing boards. Onboard the riverboat, valet laundry and pressing services are available; there is no dry cleaning on board.
We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the
event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the riverboat.
Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your Grand European Cruise:
- Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
- Sport jacket and optional tie for men
- Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
- A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night

In May, 2023 we enjoyed a relaxing, scenic, and very educational Eastern Europe river cruise on the Danube River through five countries: Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, and Hungary. All former communist Eastern Bloc countries, each one had a different story of hardships and triumphs following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Our Eastern Europe river cruise was on the very same ship that we had sailed on for our Great Rivers of Europe cruise almost five years earlier, Grand Circle’s M/S Adagio. As usual, we found the food, service and tour guides to be excellent. Our 120 or so fellow travelers were divided into four groups. Our “Blue Group” of 35 people was under the leadership of an outstanding program director, Dragos from Romania.
Among the many highlights of the journey were:
- the the first-hand account of a pro-democracy revolutionary and the opulent Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, Romania;
- the historic and scenic cities of Veliko Tarnovo and Arbanasi, Bulgaria, where human presence has been dated to 5000 years ago;
- traveling through the picturesque gorges of the Iron Gates region of the Danube between Romania and Serbia;
- the museum and tomb of Yugoslavian dictator Tito in Belgrade, and the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia;
- the Homeland War Memorial Cemetary in Vukovar and a home-hosted luncheon in Aljmas, Croatia; and
- the spectacular beauty of the evening floodlit buildings along the Danube in Budapest, Hungary.

Absolutely fantastic! Your background information and commentary was phenomenal. It brought the pictures to life and gave them context. Our pictures are pretty, but yours brought us back to the ship and the cities we visited. Your video was outstanding and highlighted the many magic moments of the trip. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Thanks for your kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed it. We enjoyed traveling with you and hope to bump into you again on a future trip.

When you visit Scotland, it can be difficult to discern legend from real life. Scotland's one of the best places to visit in Europe, period.
WINTER AURORA, SUMMER SUN
Scandinavia is dark for much of the year, but light is what defines its polar nations, from the Midnight Sun that rises high above Demark in mid-summer, to the aurora that dances above Norway and Iceland amid winter's deepest freeze. Many of the best European cruises dock in Denmark, and it's no wonder why. From colorful Nyhavn harbor in Copenhagen to storied castles like Amalienborg and Frederiksborg, Denmark more than makes up for the fact that its more famous neighbors often eclipse it.
LAND OF FIRE AND ICE
It's easy to be intrigued by Iceland , whether you walk through Reykjavik's riveting Hallgrimskirkja church, or watch the northern lights dance over Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls. Plus, there are few better ways to cap off cruises to Europe than a dip in the aptly-named Blue Lagoon.
PRICELESS PANORAMAS, FABULOUS FJORDs
Norway is a country in beautiful balance. Had enough of the orderliness of Oslo? Head west to beautiful Bergen, where finger-shaped fjords jut into and out of thousands of miles of coastline. Or contrast a fresh fish dinner at sea level with the view from towering Trolltunga cliff.
Europe is beautiful in every season, but the peak of comfortable weather (especially in the north) is between May and September.
You should always be prepared for rain and colder weather when you travel to Europe, especially in the North. Dress in light layers for your vacation.
Europeans speak more English the farther north you go. Your phone's translation app (or, at minimum, learning how to say "Hello" and "Thank You" in local languages) will aid you along the Mediterranean.

Following World War II, Hungary spent 40 years as the Soviet-backed Hungarian People’s Republic, a fascist regime that was massively unpopular for its oppressive politics, brutal secret police force (the ÁVH), and declining economic conditions. An uprising in 1956 failed to eradicate the Soviet-backed government, but did eventually result in more liberal policies. The Hungarian People’s Republic finally ended with the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989.
Step into the past for a tour of this fraught history, beginning at the Budapest Retro Interactive Museum. Afterwards, you'll drive by Heroes’ Square on your way to Gellért Hill for spectacular views over Budapest, where you’ll see Hungary’s own Statue of Liberty. Originally erected as a monument to the Soviet “liberation” of Hungary from Nazi occupation, the statue’s inscription was later altered to celebrate Hungarian independence, freedom, and prosperity without mention of Soviet intervention.

Start your tour with a drive down the picture-worthy Andrássy Avenue. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a masterpiece of Neo-Renaissance architecture and city planning. Your coach will head into Budapest’s former Jewish quarter. Despite being one of the smallest districts in Budapest, it is still one of the liveliest, with a dense population and a plethora of bars, coffee shops, and street food stands. You’ll see the area’s unique streets and hidden courtyards before exiting the coach at Dohány Street Synagogue.
Dohány Street Synagogue, also known as Central Synagogue or the Great Synagogue, is the largest synagogue in Europe and the second-largest in the world. It’s gilded onion domes and red-striped facade make it one of the most interesting buildings in Budapest. The interior is even more ornate, with intricately designed ceilings and a combined floor and gallery space that can accommodate thousands of worshippers.
Mohács, Batina (Osijek), Vukovar
Welcome to Croatia! This ancient country, which has made a remarkable recovery from a brutal civil war, is noted for its beautiful countryside and thriving folk traditions, as well as simple, delicious local rustic food.
Vučedol Culture Museum and Lunch at a Family Restaurant

Later, you’ll visit the Vučedol Museum. The basic idea behind the concept of this unique museum was integration into the terrain—the entire structure is designed to be mostly buried in the ground and only the façade is open to the landscape. Its shape, as serpentine, follows terrain, and on whose green roof you can reach the archaeological sites over the museum. Along the path, you’ll encounter the various Vučedol culture archaeological findings that have been discovered to date, which showcase the daily life and customs during a turbulent time of the immigration of the first Indo-Europeans and their relationship with the native population, the blending of material cultures and religions. Following your time at the museum, enjoy lunch at the local family restaurant.
Next, you're off to Vukovar, whose bullet-riddled water tower stands as a reminder of the bitter Croatian War of Independence, fought between 1991 and 1995, when Croatia sought to break away from Yugoslavia. Thousands died during the siege of Vukovar, which was heavily damaged. Here you will see lasting signs of the conflict, but you will also see a revitalized community, determined to rebuild.

This evening, enter the Cathedral of St. Sava in Belgrade, a stunning building with a domed design that is meant to evoke the Hagia Sophia and an interior generously tiled in golden mosaics. Explore the crypt and sit for a special choir performance. Hum along to the familiar tune of Schubert’s Ave Maria and discover a host of Serbian classics.
Please note: this excursion may not be available on some sailings. In its place, we will take our guests to an excellent Serbian restaurant at the Kalemegdan Fortress, where you will enjoy a traditional folklore performance while snacking on Serbian delicacies.

As a motorcoach carries you through the city, you’ll see a mix of architectural styles that reveal the city’s past, ranging from Gothic, Ottoman, baroque, and art nouveau to utilitarian Communist apartment blocks and modern high-rises. While Belgrade has been no stranger to political upheaval, the 19th-century Residence of Princess Ljubica and serene old residential streets speak of calmer days, as do the bustling present-day café-lined boulevards. You’ll pass the tomb and memorial museum of Josip Broz Tito, which is located at the site of Tito’s former residence in Belgrade’s affluent Dedinje neighborhood, and visit Kalemegdan Fortress, high on a hill above the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers.
Ancient Romans built the first fortress here, and successive conquerors and defenders—Slavs, Byzantines, Ottomans, Habsburgs—continued to build and destroy fortifications on this site for another 1,500 years. Walk along the old stone walls, passing monuments and memorials (some will surprise you—poets and composers are honored here as well as military actions), for a sense of Serbia’s distant and more recent history. It’s not the only intriguing historical sight you’ll see today, however. You will also visit the Karadjordjevic Dynasty Palace and sip a glass of sparkling Serbian wine as you tour a compound of palaces built in the 1920s and 1930s. Serbia’s royal family, which is related to most of Europe’s royalty, has a strictly honorary position in modern-day democratic Serbia, but Crown Prince Alexander (who did not feel that taking the title of king was appropriate when his father died in exile in the United States in 1972) and his family still live in these palaces. A local expert will show you the public rooms of the Royal Palace, the White Palace, the adjacent chapel, and the spacious grounds.
Let's Go: "I Bike Belgrade" Tour

Mount a bike and spend a leisurely half-day getting an up-close look at Belgrade, complete with lively commentary from your guide, who will tell you not just about the tumultuous recent past but also what it’s like to live here. Ride past Branko’s Bridge, Staro Sajmište (a former concentration camp), the Palace of Serbia, and Hotel Jugoslavija; after a refreshing stop at a traditional fisherman’s bar, you’ll be ready to pedal to Kalemegdan Fortress and see a bit of Serbia’s more distant past.
Golubac, Cruising the Iron Gates
Head ashore to explore a Paleolithic site and an extraordinarily well-preserved medieval fortress. All along the way, history lines the banks of the river. Keep an eye out for Trajan’s Plaque, which the ancient Romans erected to commemorate the road they anchored in the steep cliffs above the water, and Golubac Castle, built in the 14th century and attacked successively by the Serbs, Magyars, and Turks.
Unwind onboard as you cruise the breathtaking Iron Gates, an 83-mile-long (134-kilometer-long) stretch of scenic gorges that were cut through the Carpathian and Balkan mountains over eons by the Danube River. These gorges, which act as a natural border between Serbia and Romania, are among the most dramatic and beautiful sights in all of Europe. This was one of the swiftest and most dangerous stretches of the river before two dams were built: Iron Gate I and Iron Gate II. Construction on the dams began in 1964 and took 20 years to complete; they have dramatically altered the area’s landscape, raising the water level by 114 feet (35 meters) and drowning several islands and villages.
Lepenski Vir Archaeological Park and Golubac Castle
Your first stop is Golubac Castle, one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe, a powerhouse that has loomed over the Danube for centuries.

Later you'll visit Lepenski Vir which is one of the largest and most significant prehistoric archeological sites from the Stone Age, located on the Danube. It was once the epicenter of one of the most highly developed prehistoric cultures, with complex social relations and even rudimentary urban planning. The discovery of this prehistoric settlement has changed the image experts once had about the early Stone Age, expanding scientists’ knowledge about human communities that walked the earth millennia ago.
Let's Go: Hike to Golubac Castle

Majestically rising from the south bank of the Danube River is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe. Golubac Castle and its 10 towers are situated strategically at the entrance of the Iron Gates, a narrow gorge with steep cliffs on each side of the Danube separating Serbia and Romania. This portion of the Danube is often considered one of the most scenic, and you can take in all its glory on our hike up to the castle.
Vidin is a port town on the Danube that once played an important role in medieval Bulgarian politics, as the great fortress Baba Vida attests. It’s your base for an unusual excursion today—a visit to the fascinating Belogradchik rock formations. Or you can indulge in a tasting at a local winery.
Dos Alamos Wine Estate Visit and Tasting
In the village of Negovanovtsi, you’ll find the Dos Alamos Winery. This boutique estate makes excellent use of the local terroir, where a combination of sandy soil, continental weather, and plenty of sunshine blesses their hillside vineyards with high-quality grapes.
Belogradchik Red Rock Valley

Drive through the scenic Bulgarian countryside to Belogradchik, a small town in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains, not far from the Serbian border. After some light refreshment at a local hotel, you’ll be ready to explore the astonishing rock formations nearby, which are over 200 million years old—and have inspired nearly as many legends! Many of the strange wind- and weather-hewn shapes have names, such as Adam and Eve, the Bear, and the Castle. The outcroppings formed a natural defense for the town that was enhanced with man-made fortifications over the centuries. Whether you choose to hike with a local expert to the top of the path or not, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views. Your return will take you past some sights that highlight Vidin’s mixed heritage: the Orthodox cathedral, the Turkish mosque, the Konak (the 18th-century headquarters of the Turkish police), and the cruciform barracks (which date to the 1790s). The final stop will be Baba Vida, whose stern 10th-century stone walls were built on the site of a Roman watchtower.
Bulgaria’s foremost Danube port, Ruse is sometimes called “Little Vienna” for its elegant 19th-century mansions and public buildings.
In the evening, a special Captain’s Farewell Reception and Dinner will be prepared for you.

Twice the capital of Bulgaria—before and after the Ottomans conquered the nation—Veliko Tarnovo climbs steep hills above the Yantra River, topped by the ruins of Tsarevets, the stronghold where Bulgaria’s kings ruled between 1185 and 1393. The remains of the great stone walls and towers that you see formed the historic heart of the Second Bulgarian Empire. History lives in this town, as a quick look at the wares for sale in Samovod Marketplace will show you: Handicrafts are all made by local artisans using ancient, medieval, or Renaissance technologies. You’ll have time to peruse the exceptional local pottery and textiles there before heading to Arbanassi, home to six amazing 17th-century stone churches, each one decorated with colorful and intricate frescoes. Learn something of the multicultural history of this fascinating town at the Ethnographic Museum and visit the UNESCO-designated Nativity Church, where murals of the Nativity, the Last Judgment, and the zodiac brilliantly blend religious and humanist iconography. At another of the churches, Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, you’ll hear the otherworldly singing of an Orthodox choir in a short concert. Your day’s adventure includes a traditional three-course Bulgarian lunch, complete with live folk music.
Ruse Walking Tour with Ivanovo and Basarbovo Monasteries

Walk through the woods of Rusenski Lom, a protected region that is home to a wide variety of rare birds, among other wildlife, to Ivanovo Rock Monastery—once an enclave of more than 40 churches and chapels that the devout built inside caves above the Lom River Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is famous for its beautiful and well-preserved 14th-century murals.
Your next destination, the Basarbovo Rock Monastery, is the only rock monastery where monks still live and worship today. Climb the narrow rock stairway to the 15th-century cloister, which is cut into the limestone cliffs high above the Lom River, and take a look at the arresting frescoes. You’ll also spend some time in Ruse, a city with an easygoing, gracious feeling. Freedom Square, a huge open plaza, takes its name from the Freedom Monument, which soars from the center of the square; the stately Belle Epoque buildings surrounding the square attest to the city’s prosperity in the 1890s. Stroll along wide, tree-lined Alexandrovska, the main pedestrian street that links the city’s many attractive squares, encountering such landmark sights as Ruse’s grand theater, the city museum, and the first movie theater (it opened in 1896).
Giurgiu (Disembark), Transfer to Bucharest
This morning, you’ll disembark the ship in Giurgiu and drive through the countryside to Bucharest, where you’ll enjoy a panoramic city tour and a visit to People’s Palace. Tonight, you’ll relax in the comfort of a luxury hotel located in the heart of the city, Romania’s capital and its cultural and economic center.
Bucharest Communist Tour with People's Palace

Bucharest began as a fortress in the 15th century, a warlike origin that set the tone for its turbulent history. It saw glory days as the summer residence of the Wallachian princes and was burned to the ground by the Ottoman Turks; then Austria-Hungary and imperial Russia fought over it for a century. After Wallachia and Moldavia united to form Romania in the mid-19th century, Bucharest enjoyed a prosperity that was reflected in its extravagant architecture, some of which miraculously survived WWII bombing and Communist building programs.
You’ll see Bucharest’s very own Triumphal Arch, which is modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and Victoria Boulevard, lined with chic shops and handsomely restored pre-war buildings—and sites where protests brought down Ceaușescu’s regime in 1989. These days Bucharest enjoys a lively and eclectic cultural scene, hosting international arts festivals and concerts, and a measure of prosperity apparent in its busy cafés and thriving street life.
For the most dazzling stop of the day, you’ll visit the colossal People’s Palace, the second largest office building in the world. It’s certainly one of the grandest as well, filled with crystal chandeliers, mosaics, marble, gold leaf, and stained-glass windows. A remnant of the city’s communist history, the building’s original design took a team of approximately 700 architects and was inspired by Socialist Realism, Modernism, and Neoclassical architecture. Though the People’s Palace was ordered by Nicolae Ceaușescu, the last communist leader of Romania, it was not completed until 8 years after his death. The Palace now houses the Romanian Parliament and three museums, including a contemporary art museum and the Museum of Communist Totalitarianism.
Get to know the bustling heart of Romania's capital city with a full day to explore Bucharest on your own.

The ceausescu mansion - a dictator's private home.
Nicolae Ceausescu, the second and last communist leader of Romania, is infamous for many things. Today, a very physical manifestation of his dark legacy can be found in Romania’s architecture. Most famously, Ceausescu ordered the construction of the Palace of Parliament, a massive and undeniably beautiful building that came at the cost of much of historic Bucharest. Until quite recently, the dictator’s home was not open to visitors. Now, however, you can enter Ceausescu's home to see how he lived. As might be expected, the villa is grand; influences of Baroque and Rococo styles mingle with medieval Romanian elements, and gifts from historic heads of state—from Mao Zedong to Queen Elizabeth II—fill its halls.

Snagov Palace with Vlad the Impaler's Tomb
Built by Prince Nicolae, brother of King Carol II, in the 1930s, Snagov Palace is a handsome estate on the shores of a lake with which it shares its name. On your tour here today, you’ll learn about its noteworthy design, as well as the historic figures who have walked its halls. We’ll complete our visit with a delightfully eerie experience: a quick trip to an island in the middle of Lake Snagov, where we’ll find a monastery rumored to house the remains of Vlad the Impaler—the real life Count Dracula.
Check out of your hotel this morning. If your cruise/tour package includes a group departure transfer or if you have purchased a private departure transfer, you will be transferred to Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport for your flight home.

3 mistakes I made during my first European cruise kept me from making the most of my trip
- I took my first European cruise with Virgin Voyages in August 2022.
- Despite the trip's highlights, I regretted making some mistakes during the voyage.
- Napping too much and socializing too little kept me from making the most of my cruise.
My first European cruise was awesome — but it could have been better.
In August 2023, I embarked on my first international cruise through the Mediterranean Sea with the luxury, adults-only cruise line Virgin Voyages .
The ship sailed round-trip from Barcelona for seven days, with port stops in France, Italy, and Spain. I was in awe of the historical destinations I visited, from Corsica to Ibiza . And the ship itself was full of unique activities, fine dining establishments, and luxurious details, from vibrant, modern decks to a VIP lounge .
But looking back on the trip, I made some mistakes that kept me from making the most of the voyage.
I took a nap within the first hour of my voyage, leaving me jet-lagged for days.
As a New Yorker who often travels internationally, I have one rule to avoid jet lag — stay up through the first day, regardless of exhaustion.
Well, on this cruise, I broke it.
After a red-eye flight to Barcelona and a one-night stay in a houseboat I found on Airbnb, where I hardly slept, I was exhausted by the first day of my cruise.
And being six hours from my time zone didn't help.
Once I boarded the ship at 3 p.m., I showered and ate before taking a power nap. I slept much longer than planned and woke up at 7 p.m.
As a result, I was reluctantly awake for most of that first night. I don't remember when I finally dozed off, but I didn't wake up until noon on day two.
The chaotic sleeping schedule left me jet-lagged for days. I napped each afternoon rather than maximizing my time exploring the ship and port stops, and I watched movies in my cabin when I couldn't sleep at night.
My voyage was halfway over when I finally adjusted to the time zone. So, next time, I'll remember what happens when I break my jet lag rule and opt for a coffee over a nap.
I should have socialized more with other passengers.
On an adults-only cruise ship , there were plenty of passengers to socialize with. And making friends seemed to be the vibe. Strangers spoke to me at dinners, on the pool deck, and during small group excursions.
While I appreciated these brief interactions, I wish I'd made an effort to meet up with these cruisers again. There were travelers aboard from around the world, and I even met some people from NYC.
While I was traveling with my partner and enjoyed activities with him on the ship, some things would have been fun to do in a larger group, like playing board games and racing in the arcade.
In the future, I'll try to develop deeper connections to participate in group activities and perhaps make friends to meet up with at home or during upcoming travels — whether traveling solo or with my partner.
At the end of the trip, I regretted not spending more time in Europe.
On my flight back to NYC, I thought about how taxing it was to travel so far from home and how fortunate I am to explore other countries.
So, I should have extended the trip to make the most of my time across the Atlantic. It was my first time visiting Spain, and I hardly spent time in Barcelona. Viewing the city's skyline and surrounding mountains from the ship's decks made me long for a chance to explore more.
But after disembarking the ship, I headed straight to the airport for my afternoon flight home.
So, next time I'm on a European cruise, I'll book a few more nights in the ship's home port on the front or back end of the trip to make the most of it.
