The Eagles announce farewell tour: 'The time has come for us to close the circle'

Portrait of Melissa Ruggieri

The Eagles will embark on their own long road out of Eden this fall for a farewell tour expected to last into 2025.

"We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful," the band said in a statement. "Everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle."

Dubbed The Long Goodbye, the Eagles' final shows will kick off Sept. 7 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Only the first handful of dates are being announced with Boston (Sept. 11), Denver (Oct. 5), Atlanta (Nov. 2) and St. Paul, Minnesota (Nov. 17) among them.

Presale tickets and VIP packages go on sale July 12; the general on-sale begins 10 a.m. local time July 14.

Also along for the jaunt will be Steely Dan, longtime contemporaries of the band who will commemorate their own five-decade-plus career.

In announcing their plans to end their "52-year odyssey," the Eagles – composed of Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit – noted they will play as many shows in each market as the audience demands, even if it requires returning to certain cities. The band will be joined onstage, as they have since the 2016 death of founding member Glenn Frey, by Vince Gill and Frey's son, Deacon.

Shortly after Frey's death at the age of 67, Henley indicated the Eagles would no longer tour. But following a pair of special classic-rock-focused festivals in 2017 – Classic West and Classic East, organized by their longtime manager Irving Azoff – they resumed regular live performances.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and six-time Grammy winners have played more than 1,000 concerts throughout their 50 years of touring. Their recently wrapped Hotel California Tour – named for their landmark 1976 album, which they played in its entirety with a backing orchestra – grossed about $250 million over 90 shows, according to music industry trade publication Pollstar.

In thanking fans for their years of support, the band concluded, "This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on."

In the Fall of 1971, the Eagles formed, pioneered, and personified a uniquely American musical style blending country, folk, R&B, rock, and pop sensibilities, and would go onto become one of the most creatively and commercially successful bands of all time.  In today’s faddish, fractured, rock landscape, the Eagles retain an appeal that transcends both generation and genre, cementing the band’s role as enduring musical icons.

The Eagles have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, scored six #1 albums, and topped the singles charts five times.  They earned six GRAMMY Awards, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, in their very first year of eligibility, and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.

The band’s Greatest Hits 1971-1977 is the best-selling album in history, with the RIAA certifying the collection at 38-times Platinum.  Hotel California is the third best-selling U.S. album in history, certified 26-times Platinum.  After its release in 1976, it topped the charts and earned two GRAMMY Awards for “New Kid In Town” and “Hotel California.”

“Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.” the band said in an emotional statement.

Their tour will feature core Eagles members Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit, along with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey (son of the late Glenn Frey, an original Eagle) and it will open at Madison Square Garden on Sept. 7.

They've announced 13 American dates so far, with Steely Dan as their support act.

In their announcement, the band also noted the long, and at times challenging, journey since they formed in 1972.

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds,” they said, adding thanks to their management team, road crew and backup musicians.

Barrass is contracted until the end of the 2027 season, with the Eagles saying they will look to strike a deal with the Hawks while "protecting the best interests of the West Coast Eagles".

"Tom has today informed us of his desire to pursue an opportunity at another club," general manager football Gavin Bell said.

"While the club respects Tom's request, he is contracted for another three seasons and our vice-captain.

"We will endeavour to meet Tom's request while protecting the best interests of the West Coast Eagles."

Hawthorn currently has picks 12, 30, 67 and 74 in this year's draft, plus their 2025 selections, to use in a trade.

As reported on Gettable earlier this year, Barrass had attracted some interest from Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs before settling on Hawthorn as his preferred destination.

The 2018 premiership player also had talks with Sydney last year, but a trade request did not materialise.

The 2024 Trade Period commences on October 7.

Breaking News: Man stabbed to death at Perth home, woman assists with probe

West coast eagles caretaker coach jarrad schofield says players lament lack of accountability in carlton loss.

Dan Houston collects Izak Rankine with brutal bump

West Coast caretaker coach Jarrad Schofield has lamented the lack of accountability from players to execute their role as the Eagles were brought to earth in a 65-point thumping by Carlton.

The Eagles had impressed under Schofield with competitive performances against Brisbane and Fremantle before claiming consecutive wins over Gold Coast and North Melbourne.

It gave supporters hope that they’d turned a corner, but they were outdone by an injury-hit Blues outfit playing to keep their finals hopes alive.

Schofield was quizzed about whether there was a hard tag on Carlton skipper Patrick Cripps, who ran riot in a best-on-field performance.

But he said there were several roles that were not implemented which let the side down in the defeat.

“We gave tasks to individuals, and they didn’t follow. And when you give a task to someone, and they don’t execute their role, well then, you’re searching for other players to step up into that space that really shouldn’t have had to,” Schofield said.

“That’s the accountability for that individual to make sure they get it done, but he (Cripps) was enormous. By half-time, he had 21 possessions, and he was well on his way.

“Luckily, we sort of curtailed his influence a little bit, but then the dam wall breaks and when you’ve got too many numbers that you’re dealing with in and around the football, and it’s left to too few again, it’s hard work.

“Even though they’re in the modern game, there’s still some old task football, a method you go to, and that’s just being accountable to a player.

“At the end of the day, certain individuals need to take ownership of messaging and performances from that game.”

Schofield hinted that there would be several changes made at the selection table ahead of their clash against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium off a six-day break.

“We’re not here to hand out games … but there’s some guys that we want to look at,” Schofield said.

“Clay Hall misses out today, but we will look to bring him back into the team, give him another go at it.

“We want to make sure that our players finish off strongly, and our young fellas that have been exposed over the last six to eight weeks, we want to make sure we give them another opportunity to keep growing because they’re going to be better for it going into pre-season.”

Schofield said the disappointment of the loss was compounded by the fact it was Andrew Gaff’s final game and forward Jamie Cripp’s 250th.

“We’re really disappointed that we didn’t really turn up on a big day for the football club,” he said.

Carlton skipper Patrick Cripps tore West Coast apart.

“The disappointment’s there as you can tell, from everyone, we’re not shying away from that but it just shows that this game is brutal and we’ve show all year and I’ve said it before that our best is good enough.

“And then when you’re off, and you’re not committed to it, through choices that you make, whether it’s through work rate and being clean around the contest, if you collectively don’t have the numbers to get it done, you get exposed.

“It just shows that we have a lot of work to do as a football club, and we have one week to go in this season, and then we have a big pre-season ahead of us.”

RUSSIA: ROCK BAND THE EAGLES PERFORM IN MOSCOW FOR THE FIRST TIME

We haven't been on the road for 7 weeks, it's an unknown here. SCU (SOUNDBITE) (English) JOE WALSH SAYING: We've really never been here and that adds a little bit more magic for us you know, London we know the drill, but it's really like magic for us to come here and see Red Square and see everything and think wow and it adds a little mystique to the concert and I'm glad we're doing it this way.

  • Story Text: Thirty years after they began touring the world and entertaining millions, legendary rockers The Eagles have finally landed in Moscow for their first-ever concert in the Russian capital. After five years apart, The Eagles have decided to reform for a seven-week tour of Europe. Reuters caught up with the group on the day that the tour kicked off. It was a true case of east-meeting-west when the band of four who had never played in Moscow before, were finally able to perform live for their Russian fans. But before they got down to the business of entertaining, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh did a spot of sightseeing, starting off in Moscow's most famous landmark, Red Square. Boy, were they impressed. The last time the band toured was in 1996 when they embarked on a global tour which was set to last six months. Due to demand combined with a certain wanderlust, The Eagles ended up being on the road for two and a half years. This time they say, it'll be different. Thrilled to be in Moscow for their debut Russian concert, the band who have sold more than 100 million albums world-wide since they formed in 1971, revealed there was another purpose for the tour. Although they insisted they didn't really want to discuss the subject, and wanted to just concentrate on having a blast on tour, one of the principle reasons for going back on tour again was so that the fifty-somethings, could adapt to playing together again in preparation for a new studio album. When The Eagles end their tour in July, they're heading straight for Los Angeles where they're set to work on their first studio album of all-new material for 22 years. And already, the pressure is mounting. The band is responsible for two of the best-selling albums in history. Their 'Greatest Hits: 1971-75' currently tops the best-selling albums of all time chart having recently knocked Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' off the number one spot. It has sold a staggering 27 million albums alone. 'Hotel California' album released in 1976 currently holds the number 15 position with 15 million albums sold. Expectations are bound to be high, but drummer/vocalist Don Henley refuses to be intimidated by the huge amount of interest the announcement has created. After the spine-tingling performance in Moscow which saw the band performing old favourites like 'Hotel California and 'New Kid in Town' in front of an audience of 17,000 fans, The Eagles are heading for Scandinavia. Next destination is Finland followed by Sweden and Norway and the band will then move on to Germany, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy. --
