The city of Dubrovnik is famous for its Game of Thrones Tours, but there is much more to the cruise port of Dubrovnik, Croatia, than King’s Landing. I have all of the Dubrovnik cruise port information in this guide.

I will show you what you can do when you dock at the Dubrovnik cruise ship terminal, how to get to the old town and Dubrovnik tour suggestions. 

When your cruise stops at Dubrovnik , Croatia, you’ll find yourself in one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the Mediterranean. The Dubrovnik port itself is located on the other side of the City from the old part of Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

We visited Dubrovnik, known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” in August 2022 on Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas as part of a Greece and Croatia itinerary , and we instantly fell in love with the City.

When deciding what to do on a port day, I know it’s very easy to pick one of the many shore excursions available from your cruise ship.

But if you want a more authentic experience and to save some money as well, one of our biggest cruising tips is always to go it alone and book a custom tour from Dubrovnik .

We really didn’t know what to expect; as Game of Thrones fans, we were focused on the filming locations that turned Dubrovnik’s old City into Kings Landing. However, it turns out that the Dubrovnik cruise terminal has so much more to offer than a couple of Dragons and the Red Keep.

It’s fair to say we had our priorities all wrong and instantly changed our plans as soon as we very quickly saw what the City had to offer.

On any cruise port visit , time is always limited, so if you really want to get a good flavor of a City, it’s important to plan ahead so based on our experience, we’ve compiled a list of what we think were the five must-do things to consider if you want to see more than just Game of Thrones locations in Dubrovnik.

Visiting Dubrovnik On A Cruise Day

When your cruise ship docks at Dubrovnik cruise port, you’ll usually be docked in the Port of Gruž, about 3km from the Old Town. Occasionally, some cruise ships will drop anchor close to the Old Town and will put you in tender boats and take you over to Old Port.

• Is Dubrovnik Worth Visiting?

Getting To The Old Town – Dubrovnik Cruise Port To Old Town

When you get off a cruise ship, it is so easy to start walking and take things as they come. But in Dubrovnik, you really owe it to yourself to head to the Old Town.

Getting there on your own is very easy and will save you a fortune on cruise ships’ prices for their organized shuttle buses or excursions.

The bus station is directly outside Dubrovnik cruise port, and you can hop on the local No. 1 Bus, which will take you to the Old Town. Alternatively, if the queues are long, grab a Taxi, as we did. The taxi fare is usually around 10 euros.

We got off the ship at 9 am, and the traffic heading towards the Old Town was pretty solid. There is a one-way system, and the streets narrow as you enter the Old Town. What should have been a 15-minute trip turned into a 40-minute ride. Be prepared for some holdups if traffic is busy.

So plan your return trip to the ship very carefully.

Explore The Old Town

Your Bus or Taxi will drop you off near the Pile Gate, which is the main entrance to the Old Town. Looking out to sea, the Old Town and Pile Gate will be on your left, and the majestic Fort Lovrijenac will be on your right.

The Old Town is a walled city built in the 16th century and is home to some of the most beautiful architecture in the world. As you take that short walk through the Pile Gate, you will be taken back in time. The Old Town is just absolutely stunning. It is easy to see why this is a UNESCO World Heritage site .

The first sight you will see in the Old Town is the Stradun, which is the wide main street that runs East from the Pile Gate to the Ploče Gate. The Stradun is lined with shops, restaurants, and cafes and is a great place to people-watch and soak up the city’s atmosphere.

My advice would be to make the best use of your time and visit some of the key sites within the Old Town first, before exploring the many shops and Restaurants.

Some must-see sights are the Franciscan Monastery, the Cathedral, and the Rector’s Palace.

The Franciscan Monastery

You’ll notice the Franciscan Monastery immediately on your left before you head properly down the Stradun. As you head in, a nice courtyard area with an old well is in the middle. The beautiful old building houses a library and a museum and is also home to one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe. The pharmacy is a must-see. It’s like stepping into something out of Harry Potter, except this is real!

The Rector’s Palace

Once you have explored the monastery, continue down the Stradum to the bottom, where the Bell Tower and Orlando’s columns are located. Then, turn right and head up towards the Cathedral.

Before you reach the Cathedral, you’ll see the Rector’s Palace on the left. The Rector’s Palace is a Gothic-Renaissance building that was once the seat of power in Dubrovnik and is now a museum.

When you first set eyes on Dubrovnik Cathedral, you will be amazed. But wait until you head inside. The place is like a museum, with stunning artwork, and the ceiling is just unbelievable. It’s just incredible.

There are many other things to see within the walls of the Old Town. Try and explore some of the smaller alleyways as you head back from the Cathedral. But remember to keep your eye on the time. Getting back through the Pile Gate can get very congested, and that’s before you get back into traffic.

Brands We Use And Trust

Walk the old town walls.

If you are a bit more energetic and want to get your steps in, you should consider walking around the City Walls. If you are careful with your time, you can easily do this alongside visiting the Old Town itself.

The Dubrovnik City Walls were constructed over a 500-year period, mainly during the 12th and 17th centuries, and they are amongst the most extensive and well-preserved fortifications in Europe. Sadly, you can’t help but notice some new scars on the wall from the much more recent war between Croatia and Serbia in the 1990s.

Walking the Dubrovnik City Walls is a unique experience that allows you to see the city from a different perspective. There are stunning views over the Adriatic Sea, the Old Town, and the surrounding islands. The walk is not too strenuous, but it does involve a LOT of steps, so wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water.

The best way to walk the old town is to start at the Pile Gate. From there, the walk takes approximately 2 hours, and there are several places where you can stop and take a break.

Take The Dubrovnik Cable Car

If you really want to see the stunning views of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic Sea, you need to schedule a trip on the Dubrovnik Cable Car.

The cable car ride has been operating since 1969 and takes you up to the top of Mount Srd in just four minutes, offering breathtaking views of Dubrovnik, the Adriatic Coast, and beyond.

To get to the Cable Car station, you can head out of the Buza Gate from the Old Town or jump on a number 1a, 1b, or 1c bus from Pile Gate. You can also walk it if you prefer.

Ticket prices for the cable car are 27 euros for an adult round trip, and Kids are 7 euros.

Note: the local currency is no longer Kuna and is now euros as of January 2023.

Once you reach the top of the Srd hill, you can explore Fortress Imperial, where you can find many details on the 1990s Croatian Wars of Independence.

If you have time, you can also enjoy a meal with an incredible view at the Panorama Restaurant. The restaurant offers a very varied menu, including traditional Croatian cuisine . There was lots of outdoor seating, but it was at a premium when we were there.

• Guide To The Dubrovnik Cable Car

Visit Fort Lovrijenac

This medieval fortress is often referred to as “Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar” and is perched atop a sheer rock overlooking the sea.

To get to the Fort, head down to the Old Port from Pile Gate. It’s pretty steep, so wear comfortable shoes and take your time.

Once you reach the very picturesque port, be prepared for another steep climb up to the Fort. There are around 200 steps to reach the fortress. My wife had sprained her knee a few weeks earlier and found the climb quite challenging. She agreed that the breathtaking views of Dubrovnik’s Old Town made it all worth it.

The fortress was built in the 11th century, and it has played a significant role in the city’s defense throughout history and has never been conquered. You can understand why when you look over the edge of the Fort’s walls!

One quick thing and: we got this advice from a local. Don’t be tempted to take a swim in the old port harbor. You will see kids and other tourists in there, but apparently, some wastewater is piped into the water. Also, many small boats come in and out of the harbor there, which can be quite dangerous for swimmers!

Relaxing on Dubrovnik’s Beaches

Now, if history, stunning buildings, and amazing views are not your thing, then you can ignore the previous four recommendations and just hit the beach !

We spoke to several fellow cruise passengers who preferred a more relaxing day in port, and these were the beaches that kept being mentioned.

Banje Beach

Banje Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Dubrovnik, and for a good reason. It’s located about 15 minutes walk from Pile Gate at Old Town. The beach offers stunning views of the city walls and the harbor below Fort Lovrijenac.

Sveti Jakov Beach

Sveti Jakov Beach is an excellent option if you’re looking for a quieter beach experience. It’s a bit further out from the Old Town area, so it tends to be less crowded. It’s still easily accessible from the Cruise port if you want to head to the Beach for the day. The water is calm and perfect for swimming, and there are plenty of loungers and umbrellas available for rent.

Lapad Beach

Lapad Beach is located in the Lapad Bay area, which is much closer to Dubrovnik cruise port. It’s a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby. It is quite “pebbly,” though, so bear that in mind. Lapad Beach is about a 10-minute taxi drive from the cruise port.

Drop into the old pharmacy, dating back to the 14th century, and buy some of the deliciously fragranced products to take home.

The Rector’s Palace and Cultural Historical Museum

This late 15th-century Gothic-Renaissance palace is where the rector of the city, who governed Dubrovnik, would live. Each rector was confined to the palace for a period of one month. Today, the palace serves as the Cultural History Museum. A collection of some 20,000 items including coins, statues, coats of arms, weapons, photographs, and textiles chart the history of the city from the 14th to the 20th centuries.

Stroll along historic stradun.

Stradun is the wide, elegant boulevard that bisects the Old Town of Dubrovnik, connecting the Pile and Ploce Gates, its smooth limestone gleaming in the sunlight. At one end is Onofrio’s Great Fountain, which has supplied spring water to the city since the 13th century. Stradun is lined with magnificent palaces, shops, and restaurants. Explore some of the shaded side alleys to find the most authentic places, and as part of your walk, visit the Franciscan Monastery and St. Blaise Church.

Ride the Cable Car to the Top of Srd Hill

For the best shot of the old city from above, ride the cable car to the top of Srd Hill, behind Dubrovnik. At the top, visit the Museum of the Croatian War of Independence, housed in the Fort Imperial. This fascinating display tells the story of the Balkans conflict from 1991 to 1995 via TV footage, documents, and photographs. Afterward, you could hike down to the city in 30 minutes with more time en route to take in those beautiful views.

Take a Ferry to the Island of Lokrum

On a hot day, jump on the ferry to sleepy Lokrum, a wooded island just 10 minutes by boat from Dubrovnik. Snooze on the rocks shaded by pine trees, wander through the botanical garden, and explore the ancient monastery. You’ll find a few cafés and restaurants, although locals prefer to take a picnic. There’s a large population of peacocks on Lokrum, adding an air of exoticism.

You’ll find plenty of establishments serving authentic Croatian cuisine on your Dubrovnik cruise. Pašticada is marinated, herb-stuffed beef, slow-cooked and served with pasta or gnocchi; you will find a lot of pasta on menus as Italy is not far away. Fresh fish is available everywhere, too, from sea bass and tuna to fresh oysters from the nearby town of Ston. Save space for dessert—look out for delicious dishes such as orange and olive cake, flaky apple or cherry strudel, and the ubiquitous gelato.

Culture & History of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik was established in the 7th century as Ragusa, an independent republic that rivaled Venice for its riches. Dubrovnik was brought under the umbrella of the Byzantine Empire during the 12th century, and later was occupied by the Venetians, who completed construction on parts of the Old Town that stand to this day. In 1667, the city was devastated by an earthquake and lost much of its power. Unable to fight off the French invasion by Napoleon, Dubrovnik fell to the French and was bundled into Austria-Hungary in 1815.

The city became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia after WWII, a period that ended after the 1991-1995 Balkans conflict, which resulted in the breakup of Yugoslavia. The city suffered significant shelling during a seven-month siege in 1991; many of the houses you see today have new roofs following the war.

Today, the city enjoys spectacular success as both a tourist destination and a film location. Despite the fact that they are massively outnumbered by visitors in summer, locals are friendly and welcoming. During your visit, try to embrace fjaka , a Croatian concept of doing very little in a pleasurable way and living in the moment.

Dubrovnik Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Ships dock at Gruz, in the modern part of Dubrovnik, just a couple of miles from the Old Town. Shuttles are available to take you into Old Town, or you can hail a taxi from the pier. The bus station can also be found within walking distance from Gruz. Ferries to the nearby islands (apart from Lokrum) depart from Gruz Port. While there are plenty of shops and restaurants in Gruz, the vast majority of visitors head straight to the Old Town. At the port itself, you’ll find restrooms and ATMs.

Transportation in Dubrovnik

Within the city walls, the only way to get around is on foot, as almost the entire area is car-free. Transportation options to head further afield includes public buses that run to and from Gruz Port, where ships dock, or taxi, of which there are many. Ferries to Lokrum depart from the Old Town Port, and the cable car to Mount Srd is just inland of the Old Town, around 10 minutes’ walk from the Pile or Ploče Gates.

Shopping in Dubrovnik

There’s no shortage of shops in Dubrovnik. Things to buy include traditional Konavle jewelry, Croatian wines, products made from local lavender, silk ties, and locally made footwear. Entire shops are dedicated to merchandise related to the many movies and TV shows shot here. For something more authentic, visit the Pharmacy in the Franciscan Church, where the products are hand made; the delicate orange blossom face cream, for example, is exquisite.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Croatia is the Kuna (HRK), although you will see prices in Euros as well. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the exchange rate before going shopping. Most places accept credit cards, although you will need cash for shopping in markets. There are plenty of ATMs in the city.

There is a tipping culture in Croatia, but not a big one. Tip 10% for good service in a restaurant, and the equivalent of 5 or 10 Euros to a good tour guide.

Facilities: Bar open Wed. thru Sun 1000 to 2400. Dining room open Wed.- Sun for lunch and dinner (breakfast on Sat. & brunch on Sun.) Snack bar open every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day 1000 to 1630. Heated Pool and Paddle Tennis Courts available to members and their guests. 320 member slips (25’ to 120’), 100+ dry storage slips (up to 25’), two 2-ton hoists and launch ramp. Guest docks are first come, first served, but call for reservations. First night free for reciprocal club members. CYC monitors channel 68.

Junior program: Year round. Junior Sailing and Rowing Program. Open to all youths in the community (ages 8-18). Full time Junior staff.

CYC offers a variety of summer programs for junior age (13 – 18) boys and girls. CYC membership is not required to enroll. We have programs suited for all juniors with an interest in rowing from those wishing to try the sport for the first time to those training for national competitions.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.
