Dispatch Tour

Nashville, TN-  This summer, veteran roots rockers Dispatch hit the road in support of their second album in two years, Location 13. Lighting and Production Designer Marc Janowitz ( E26 Design ) designed the band's summer tour utilizing gear from  4Wall Entertainment .

The design process for the tour started in February and was finalized in April.

"The band wanted to achieve an impactful, unique and customized lighting and scenic look," explained Janowitz. "The visual theme of the tour is inspired by Native American tribal art. The design was meant to borrow some of that without being too literal."

The rig needed to be flexible and adaptable due to the tour routing and lightweight for the many venue restrictions.

"Special attention was made for a design that could still be implemented, even if slightly adapted, for the different venues and stages we faced during the tour," said the LD. "The intent and the impact had to stay intact."

4Wall provided a moving lights package of  Robe Pointes ,  Spikies ,  Vari*Lite VL4000 Spots , and  GLP Impression X4S  LEDs.

The primary function of the Pointes is to emanate light beams over and through the band from low and behind.

"They do exactly what we need them to do and are awesome," said the LD.

The Spikies weight and size were well suited for contour applications.

"You can get a super tight beam or a wider soft beam or a prism and a moonflower effect in there if needed as well," explained Janowitz. "So you get a lot of bang for your buck out of a light that's super easy to mount in lightweight applications."

The VL4000 Spots are the workhorse spot fixture for frontlight, backlight, sidelight, and create texture and gobo effects on the arc shapes.

"The VL4K Spot is a very diverse fixture with its multiple gobo and animation wheels, colored gobos and framing shutters," said the LD.

Most of the 30 GLP Impression X4S fixtures are used as uplights to graze the front of the stretch shapes.  The rest are used to graze the truss banners and occasionally swoop down to the stage for some soft beamy aerials.

12  TMB Solaris Flares  are setup for backlighting the stretch shapes and for footlights on the band.

The tour's Lighting Director Chase Nichols shared programming duties with Janowitz utilizing 2  High End  Systems Full Boar 4  consoles and 2 Hog 4 Playback Wings.

"We made a page per song and every page has a main cue," explained Nichols. "The main cuelist may just be a starting look without any intensity or it could have over 20 cues.  There are about 10 additional faders that are specifically programmed with something specific to that song's needs."

The tour wrapped up last month at the sold-out Blue Hills Pavilion in Boston.

Quick Hits: Today’s Top Stories

  • An estimated 109,680 Americans died from drug overdoses last year, according to a provisional count released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—the second year in a row such deaths topped 100,000 as fentanyl overdoses continue to climb . The number will likely tick down slightly in the final report as the CDC weeds out non-U.S. residents and unverified overdoses, but 2021’s tally dropped only about 2,500 from estimate to final count.
  • Encounters between U.S. officials and migrants at the southwestern border have dropped about 56 percent since Title 42 ended last week and are now averaging about 4,400 people per day, according to Blas Nuñez-Neto, chief operating officer at U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Meanwhile, CBP officials said an eight-year-old migrant girl died in federal custody Wednesday after crossing the border with her family and experiencing a “medical emergency” inside a border patrol station in Harlingen, Texas.
  • U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Rachael Rollins leaked Department of Justice memos to boost an ally’s district attorney campaign—and lied about it to investigators—according to reports released Tuesday by the DOJ inspector general and Office of Special Counsel . Rollins—who also faced scrutiny for attending a Democratic National Committee fundraiser with Jill Biden last year—was part of a crop of progressive DAs pledging to ease some criminal enforcement before being narrowly confirmed to her latest post in 2021. She promised Tuesday —hours before the reports’ release—to resign.
  • Democrat Donna Keegan on Tuesday won the race for mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, a rare victory in the Republican-dominated state. The former news anchor narrowly defeated Republican Daniel Davis, who was endorsed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida Sen. Rick Scott.
  • President Joe Biden vetoed a bipartisan resolution on Tuesday that would have restored tariffs on solar panels made by Chinese companies in Southeast Asia, suggesting that reimposing the trade barriers would have threatened the supply of solar panels. The original resolution was passed last month under the Congressional Review Act, which allows Congress to overturn rules made by federal agencies —in this case, the Commerce Department—with a simple majority.
  • Colin Kahl, the Department of Defense’s undersecretary for policy, plans to resign this summer and return to Stanford University after extending a two-year leave from his tenured professorship to help officials prepare for a July NATO summit. Republicans opposed Kahl’s 2021 confirmation over his involvement in the Obama administration’s Iran nuclear deal and his social media criticisms of Republican officials while working in the private sector. His replacement could be delayed by Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s hold on top Pentagon promotions over the department’s abortion policy.
  • Secretary of State Antony Blinken agreed on Tuesday to allow leaders of the House Foreign Affairs Committee to view a partially redacted July 2021 dissent cable—written by State Department officials reportedly concerned about the impending withdrawal from Afghanistan—after Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas threatened to hold Blinken in contempt of Congress if he continued withholding access to the classified documents.
  • A federal judge on Wednesday formally sentenced Sayfullo Saipov, an Islamic state-inspired attacker convicted in January on murder and terrorism charges, to eight consecutive life sentences and 260 additional years without the possibility of parole. Saipov drove a truck into a crowded Manhattan bike path in 2017, killing eight people in the hopes of gaining membership in the terrorist organization.
  • Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso dissolved the country’s National Assembly Wednesday to avoid an impeachment vote after lawmakers accused him of embezzlement on oil shipping contracts before he took office in 2021. Political instability has fueled a surge of Ecuadorian migrants to the U.S., and anti-government protesters have promised mass demonstrations over the legislature’s dissolution.
  • Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte on Wednesday signed a bill banning TikTok in the state. Other states have restricted TikTok on official devices amid growing concerns about the Chinese Communist Party’s power over the Chinese-owned app, but Montana is the first to pass an outright ban. The law—which will likely face legal challenges— will fine app stores offering TikTok in the state starting in January 2024.

Zelensky Takes to Europe

British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak walks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Aylesbury, England.(Photo by Carl Court/Getty Images)

For most of us mere mortals, a trip to Europe is a good way to drain the coffers, not fill them. Not so for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who managed to pull in several billion dollars in promises of military aid in just a short three-day tour of Italy, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.

The trip—ahead of an expected Ukrainian offensive that will likely increase demand for weapons and ammunition—could be a sign of the shifting dynamics of aid to the war-torn country. Amid fears U.S. aid supply could falter in the coming months, Zelensky is shifting his focus toward shoring up support in Europe.

The trip kicked off Saturday in Rome, where Zelensky met with Pope Francis and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. “We’re betting on Ukraine’s victory,” the prime minister said after her 70-minute sit-down with Zelensky, promising Italy would continue to provide support for Ukraine’s fight. Meloni, who leads the right-wing Brothers of Italy party, has previously made clear she will support Ukraine because “it is right to do so in terms of national values and interest,” despite pro-Russian coalition partners and the growing ambivalence of the Italian electorate.

After the quick stop in Rome, Zelensky arrived with a bang in Berlin: Ahead of Zelensky’s appearance, Germany announced roughly $3 billion in new security assistance for Ukraine—its largest commitment yet. The package—roughly equivalent to all of Germany’s previous military aid to Ukraine since February 2022 combined— includes 30 additional Leopard 1 tanks, 20 armored personnel carriers, more than 100 combat vehicles, a dozen Howitzer artillery weapons, 200 reconnaissance drones, and several air defense systems.

The package represents an effort by Berlin to move past its feeble early support for Ukraine’s defensive war effort. One of the European allies most economically entangled with Russia at the outset of the invasion, Germany was initially reluctant to provide lethal weapons—and that reluctance extended into this year, with Germany having to be coaxed into delivering (and allowing others to deliver) the first round of Leopard tanks to Ukraine. It seems to be on board now, though. “We all wish for a speedy end to this terrible war waged by Russia against the Ukrainian people,” German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Saturday . “Germany will provide all the help it can—as long as it takes.”

From Aachen, Germany—where the German government gave Zelensky the prestigious Charlemagne Prize for his efforts in promoting European unity—the Ukrainian president jetted to Paris Sunday on a French government plane to meet with President Emmanuel Macron. “With each visit, Ukraine’s defense and offensive capabilities are expanding,” Zelensky tweeted Sunday . “The ties with Europe are getting stronger, and the pressure on Russia is growing.”

Macron greeted Zelensky with a long handshake in front of the Elysée Palace—seeming to almost drag the Ukrainian leader across the courtyard—before announcing France would send “tens of armed vehicles and light tanks” to Ukraine.

If you’re sensing a theme in the proffered aid’s contents, it’s because these armored vehicles and tanks will likely be in high demand when the long-awaited Ukrainian counteroffensive begins. “You have a counteroffensive that will probably last two months,” said Mark Cancian, a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies who focuses on defense budgeting and procurement. “But in those two months, they’ll use a lot of ammunition. And they’ll probably lose a bunch of vehicles, so replacement vehicles might also be helpful. But these are replacements of things that they already have—and know how to use.”

The United Kingdom, however, went beyond what its neighbors across the channel had offered—in both greeting and weaponry. Before Zelensky’s visit to London, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace announced the country had provided Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles that can hit targets 150 miles away. After meeting with Zelensky, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced additional supplies of air-defense missiles and “long-range attack drones” with a reach of 120 miles.

As help increases from ( most of ) Euroland, it may be about to falter in the United States. Congress last appropriated military aid to Ukraine in December’s omnibus , and if spending from that pool of money continues at its current pace, the U.S. could be scraping the bottom of the barrel as soon as July .

The White House will ask lawmakers for additional funds to close out the fiscal year, but a subset of the new Republican majority has been loudly skeptical about how much aid the last Congress approved. Even House Speaker Kevin McCarthy campaigned last year on standing athwart a “blank check” for Ukraine and yelling, “Stop.” But the speaker seems to have changed his tune somewhat in recent weeks, taking a Russian state media reporter to task earlier this month for insinuating he didn’t back the Ukrainian war effort. “I vote for aid to Ukraine, I support aid to Ukraine,” he said . “I do not support what your country has done to Ukraine, I do not support your killing of the children, either.”

Even if lawmakers write checks as fast as the Biden administration can cash them, military supply chains can only move so quickly. Money Congress appropriates is often used to pay for new weaponry built specifically for the Ukrainians, but because manufacturing a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and delivering it to Ukraine can take years, the United States is also drawing plenty of weaponry from existing Pentagon stockpiles.

As we reported last month , however, supplies of unused American ammunition, tanks, vehicles, and other weapons the Biden administration can send directly to the Ukrainian front lines under the Presidential Drawdown Authority are dwindling fast. “It looks like we’re moving towards a position where aid will be contracted [built from scratch],” Cancian told TMD , noting recent aid packages have been increasingly light on arms from the drawdown authority. Indeed, the average value of drawdowns has decreased since January of this year. To reverse that trend, Cancian said, the military would need to assume more risk: taking weapons from U.S. training facilities or units that would not be immediately sent to the front lines of any potential conflict, and then backfilling with new weapons.

The one item left on Zelensky’s wishlist after his whirlwind European tour is the U.S.-produced F-16 fighter jet. Ukraine has long asked for the NATO-standard warplanes, and its European backers seem increasingly ready to provide them. Macron said this week “the door is open” to training Ukrainian pilots on Western jets, and the British government announced back in February the U.K. planned to do just that .

But any F-16 transfer would need to be approved by the Biden administration, and American officials remain reluctant : in part because they worry the jets’ hefty price tag would suck up already-depleted funds, in part because they see other Ukrainian battlefield priorities as more acute, and in part because of the fear of escalation with nuclear-armed Russia. Without U.S. sign-off, that training might have to be strictly book learnin’, with no actual planes involved. Ukrainian officials hope this week’s G7 summit in Japan will afford Washington’s European allies an opportunity to sway the administration on the F-16 issue.

Following Zelensky’s visit this week, the U.K.—backed by the Netherlands—launched an international coalition to help the Ukrainians source F-16s. The U.S. objected , but the Overton Window on appropriate weapons to send to Ukraine has crept slowly over during the course of the war—just ask the Germans . Zelensky hopes it will shift one more time. “We need additional air defense systems and missiles,” he said Tuesday to a gathering of mostly European leaders in Reykjavik, Iceland. “We also need modern fighter jets, without which no air defense system will be perfect. And I am sure we will get there.”

Worth Your Time

  • In 1968, nine men raced to circle the planet in sailboats. Only one finished—and one of the nine committed suicide. The Golden Globe Race returned in 2018, and competitors still use technology that was available in 1968, stop only four times, and are prohibited from taking on supplies mid-race. Kirsten Neuschafer just won, and tells the Washington Post about filling her days with maintenance, language study, swims—and a detour to rescue a shipwrecked competitor. “She fell into what she called her ‘routine,’ rising early to watch the sunrise and set her direction with the position of the morning sun,” writes Les Carpenter. “She walked the boat looking for signs of scuffing, she adjusted her sails, she napped in the afternoons and kept watch for cargo ships in the evenings. She never felt alone. She knew her friends were tracking her progress on the race’s website. That gave her peace.”
  • Gregory Hillis passionately opposed introducing pitch clocks to baseball on aesthetic—even religious—grounds. Now he admits in Commonweal Magazine : I was wrong . “Does it manifest the contemplative dimension and beauty of baseball if you have a pitcher wandering aimlessly around the mound between pitches, a batter stepping out repeatedly to adjust the velcro on his batting gloves, players standing in place on the field as they wait for a pitch to be thrown, and spectators staring around at everything except the field where there exists little in the way of rhythm and, because of that, little ability to see the deep patterns and rhythms of the game?” Hillis asks. The pitch clock helped restore those rhythms so they again invite fans’ attention, he argues. “For that, I am grateful.”

Ahead of a long-awaited Ukrainian counteroffensive, do you buy the Biden administration’s argument that F-16s aren’t immediately necessary for Kyiv’s war effort? Do you expect the U.S. to relent to mounting pressure to provide the fighter planes, as it has with other advanced weapons in the past?

Insider Today

Happy Saturday! Sleep is the newest ultimate luxury item. Here's one millionaire's five-step guide to sleeping like a baby.

On the agenda:

  • The hidden costs and dangers of traveling as a gay couple .
  • We know exercise is good for us. So why don't we do it ?
  • Forget Europe — check out this hidden gem in Florida instead .
  • Millennials' favorite parenting style isn't working .

But first: There are a loooooot of people on tour right now.

If this was forwarded to you, sign up here . Download Insider's app here.

This week's dispatch

The concert conundrum.

It's never been easier to see your favorite artist perform live. There are too many acts on tour right now: Olivia Rodrigo, Luke Combs, Megan Thee Stallion, and even Justin Timberlake. The list goes on.

With so many musicians on tour, the space is getting crowded. Some acts are even cutting back on tour stops or canceling their tours altogether thanks to low ticket sales, Business Insider's Emily Stewart reported.

Take JLo, for example. She recently canceled her forthcoming tour , telling fans she was "devastated." The Black Keys also scaled down their stadium tour, opting instead for smaller venues. Both are apparently having a hard time selling tickets.

It doesn't help that ticket prices are at an all-time high, averaging around $123. Whew! With inflation, no budget is immune to feeling the pinch.

Not everyone is losing, though. If you can believe it, Taylor Swift is still on tour and selling out, and Beyoncé, when she was on the road, didn't have a problem selling tickets either.

Travel "buddies"

With laws against homosexual activity in some countries, this author and his husband sometimes have to pose as "buddies" while traveling.

The pair can pass as straight. They both have long beards and regularly wear baseball caps and cargo shorts. But they don't want to have to limit their opportunity to see the world due to their sexual orientation.

This is the cost of traveling while gay .

Why we skip exercise

It's a trope to say you shouldn't tell a depressed person to get outside and go for a walk. That's probably true to some extent, but the author says encouragement from friends to get up and move when they were struggling with depression saved them.

An abundance of research shows that exercise is good for depression. But it's rarely mentioned when discussing the mental health crisis.

The secret to finally getting yourself to work out .

Instead of Europe, try… Florida?

You don't have to leave the country to get a taste of Europe this summer. St. Augustine, Florida, can give you a glimpse of Spain without the cost of international flights.

St. Augustine, the oldest city in the US, is filled with Spanish architecture, food, and Sangria. The Florida-based author says it's the perfect dupe for a European vacation.

Explore St. Augustine .

Gentle parenting goes bye-bye

Whether you call it gentle parenting, intentional parenting, or mindful parenting, the concept remains widely the same. It aims to replace an "authoritarian" form of child-rearing with one grounded in empathy and negotiation.

But parents have begun to realize the time- and energy-intensive method is producing decidedly ambiguous outcomes. What they hoped would produce well-adjusted kids actually built little monsters.

How gentle parenting went bust .

What we're watching this weekend

  • "Hit Man": Glen Powell stars in Richard Linklater's romantic dark comedy about a fake hitman who becomes entangled with a woman trying to hire him.
  • "Perfect Match": Netflix's dating show — featuring a smorgasbord of reality stars from the streamer's other series — is back for a second season.

Taylor Swift performs Eras Tour in Edinburgh, Scotland: 'What a way to welcome a lass.'

dispatch tour europe

Taylor Swift is beginning her United Kingdom adventure performing three sold out nights at the Scotland Gas Murrayfield stadium.

"The last time I was here was almost 10 years ago," she said holding her sky blue "Lover" guitar in front of nearly 73,000 screaming fans. The last time the Eras Tour star performed within the Scottish borders was her "1989 World Tour" in Glasgow in 2015.

"I had someone pull me aside and say, 'Hey we checked this 20 times and we swear it's accurate, 'This is the highest attended concert in Scottish history,'" she added. "What a way to welcome a lass to Scotland."

Harry Styles held the record with 65,000 fans on at his Love on Tour show in 2023, according to The National. The news site said the stadium capacity was increased by 8% for the Eras Tour.

Scottish lake renamed Loch Tay Tay

In a warm gesture to the singer's arrival, the First Minister or head of the Scottish Government hosted a renaming ceremony at Loch Tay, a freshwater lake two hours north of Edinburgh.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"The first thing I want to say to Taylor and to all of her Swifties is they’re really really welcome here in Scotland," said Scottish First Minister John Swinney during a media event at the lake on Wednesday. "I’m so thrilled and the fact that Loch Tay is being renamed Loch Tay Tay is just fabulous."

'My one regret' is...

Swift's massive tour schedule is slated to visit 22 countries over the course of two years with 18 European cities on the itinerary. She has performed some cities in the past like London, Paris and Madrid. Other cities are new to her world tour including Lyon, France and Stockholm, Sweden.

In a similar message during her "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)," Swift told the Scottish audience how she loves that the Eras Tour showcases her extensive discography.

“My one regret in terms of the tours that we’ve done is that I really should have come to play in Scotland more," she said. “Look at what you’ve done. You made us feel so welcome. You’ve been so beautifully generous to us."

Swift's three plus hour show boomed out of the open-roofed stadium in Scotland to fans sitting outside the Murrayfield walls. Known as "Taylor"gating, fans sat on the grass attempting to watch livestreams on their phones of the show inside while listening to the music live. However, different from other concert cities, the livestreams inside the stadium were incredibly spotty and unreliable.

The Eras Tour heads next to Liverpool, England on Thursday when Swift will perform her 100th Eras Tour show on June 13.

Travel agency in Bulacan shuttered over alleged illegal recruitment

Travel agency in Bulacan shuttered over alleged illegal recruitment

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) shut down a travel agency in Malolos City, Bulacan, on Friday for allegedly offering bogus jobs in Europe in exchange for high fees.

The closure stemmed from an investigation by the Migrant Workers Office in Prague after it learned that the travel agency was hiring unsuspecting Filipino applicants through Facebook.

The DMW added that the travel agency has no valid license to offer jobs abroad and is not registered with the government office.

“Initial investigation revealed that the agency offers jobs such as production workers, agricultural workers, cleaners, restaurant workers, construction workers, and cleaners in various European countries, particularly Croatia, with monthly salaries between P70,000 and P80,000,” said DMW in a statement.

The DMW also said that the travel agency was collecting a processing fee of P100,000 and a placement fee of P300,000 from every applicant. These fees are non-refundable but can be paid in three installments, it added.

The personnel of the travel agency will face charges of illegal recruitment, be included in its list of persons and establishments with derogatory records, and will be banned from participating in the government’s overseas recruitment program, the DMW said.

The DMW is calling on other victims to reach out to the Migrant Workers Protection Bureau for the filing of cases against the travel agency. Complaints can also be emailed to [email protected].  — VBL, GMA Integrated News

In Europe's Schengen area , your passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of your entry. At present, the Schengen area includes most European Union (EU) countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland.

If you are transiting through Canada or the United Kingdom (UK) enroute to the Schengen area : your passport must be valid for at least six months, even though Canada and the UK do not themselves have the six-month rule. If your passport will expire within six months, airlines may not let you board your onward flight to Europe.

Traveling in Europe

If you plan to travel in Europe, you need to know about the Schengen Borders Agreement, which allows you to move freely within a number of countries without border checks. Tourists, exchange students, and people visiting for business from certain countries, like the United States, can travel in the Schengen area for up to 90 days. The Schengen area includes most EU countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland. It also includes four non-EU countries: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

Before you travel to the Schengen area, we recommend you do the following:

  • Check the expiration date on your passport book carefully before traveling to Europe. Ensure your passport book is valid for at least six months when you enter the Schengen area. This is especially important for minors under age 16 as their passports are only valid for five years. In contrast, U.S. citizen adults aged 16 and older receive passports that are valid for 10 years.
  • Always carry your passport book with you when traveling to another country in the Schengen area. Even if there is no border check at that time, officials may reinstate border controls without notice.
  • Be prepared to explain your purpose of travel.
  • Be prepared to provide proof of sufficient financial resources for the visit.
  • Comply with other entry requirements for each country you will visit or transit.

On our Country Information pages , you can find passport validity requirements and other important information for your destination country. If your passport does not meet the Schengen requirements, you may be:

  • Refused boarding by the airline at your point of origin or while transferring planes.
  • Denied entry when you arrive in the Schengen area, regardless of how long you will stay.

An immigration official will determine if you qualify for visa-free entry to the Schengen area when you first cross any external Schengen border. You will have to present your passport at that time. The officer may deny your entry if you do not qualify.

You should also check passport validity requirements if traveling onward from the Schengen area to a country outside the Schengen area. You can find this information in our Country Information pages.

HOW LONG CAN I REMAIN?

  • With a valid U.S. passport book, you can stay up to 90 days in the Schengen area for tourism or business during any 180-day period. You must wait an additional 90 days before applying to re-enter the Schengen area.
  • If you plan to stay in the Schengen area longer than three months, contact the embassy of the country where you plan to spend the majority of your time and apply for a visa.

Countries in the Schengen area may reinstate temporary internal or external border control without notice. U.S. citizens should carry their U.S. passport book at all times when entering or leaving the Schengen area. They should also bring it when traveling between Schengen countries.

How can the U.S. government help me if border officials do not let me enter?

  • We can give you the contact information of foreign embassies of the countries you wish to visit.
  • We can provide information about hiring an English-speaking foreign attorney overseas if you choose to do so.
  • Note: We cannot influence a foreign government’s decision about allowing you to enter. We cannot intervene in another country’s criminal or administrative procedures.

Backstreet Boy, *NSYNC member on tour together, bringing 'legendary' show to Columbus

dispatch tour europe

By the time fans leave Mershon Auditorium on Friday night, AJ McLean hopes their faces hurt.

Whether it's from smiling, laughing, singing or screaming, McLean said he hopes fans who come to see him and Joey Fatone perform have two hours where they can forget the world.

"I want their bodies to be just reinvigorated. I want them to leave on a paved cloud," McLean said.

McLean, 46, and Fatone, 47, members of the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC, respectively, are touring together, stopping at the Mershon Auditorium, 1871 N. High St., on Friday night for their "A Legendary Night" tour .

The show includes songs from both iconic bands' discographies , as well as several solo songs from McLean's upcoming debut solo album.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"This is a great launching platform to establish myself as an individual," McLean said. "I’m doing this under my real name, Alexander James . AJ is a persona and a Backstreet Boy, but I want the world to get to meet Alex."

McLean has been vocal about his struggles with sobriety and mental health, particularly in the early days of the band's success. His song "Arizona," which is featured in the show, addresses those issues head-on in a "pull at the heartstrings."

Each show on the tour also provides for plenty of comedy, crowd interaction and, of course, the hits.

"This is literally for the fans, by the fans and we keep adding more dates because the fans want it. We hope we can keep doing this as long as we possibly can until both guys get busy again," he said.

McLean said it still feels surreal after more than 30 years of the Backstreet Boys to have fans singing the words back at him — and to have fans of both *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys — singing along, making new memories and friends in the process.

More music: What shows are coming to Columbus this summer?

"To be able to have music that transcends generations is huge. I have lots of friends who have a 5-year-old or a 25-year-old and they’re both fans. They're either starting them out young or the Gen Zers are looking at us like we’re vintage. That’s just really cool," he said.

"I still pinch myself when I hear us on the radio or you look out in the audience and you’re seeing both bands' fans singing the other bands' songs and coexisting and making new friendships, that's really, really cool."

While *NSYNC recently reunited and released new music earlier this year, the Backstreet Boys are taking a break after wrapping up their "DNA World Tour." However, McLean teased a "massive" announcement from the band toward the end of 2024 that has been "seven years in the making" for who else but the fans.

"We truly do love to do what we do. We’re five hams, we’re in our element and even we forget about what we’re dealing with in our lives five minutes before the show. And we really, really do love each other. We’re the closest now we’ve ever been," McLean said.

But for now, McLean and Fatone are enjoying each other's company (McLean said the rivalry cooked up by the music industry as both bands hit stardom was largely a façade) as fellow girl dads and with shared life experiences.

"You never know what you’re going to get at the show," he said. "We'll take you down memory lane. It’s for the ladies, you can have a nice ladies night and leave your man at home or you can bring your man and he’ll have a damn good night too."

At a glance

Fans are advised to come early to the show, with doors opening at 6:30 for a 7:30 p.m. start. Tickets are still available, starting at $55, through Ticketmaster .

How to plan a Europe road trip: Top lessons learned from a seasoned driver

Larissa Milne

June 5, 2024 // By Larissa Milne

By Larissa Milne June 5, 2024

Remember the journey is the destination on your Europe road trip

There’s nothing like hitting the highway on a European road trip to get "in country," be it on a high-speed motorway or a narrow, winding country lane. My husband and I have explored Europe by car more than 20 times and experienced the joys and sometimes headaches of driving in foreign countries. Here, we share our tips on planning a Europe trip by car to help you make the most of your vacation.

Tips for renting a car for a European road trip

Pick up a rental car at a more remote location to avoid navigating busy cities

Do I need a driving permit when traveling Europe by car?

Some (but not all) European countries require you to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) when traveling around Europe by car. Check the International Travel Page of the U.S. Department of State's website, which provides information by country. You can obtain IDPs at your local AAA office (you needn’t be a member) or by mail.

We haven't always needed it, and some car rental agencies are stricter than others. Our policy is "better safe than sorry."

Advertisement Advertisement

Should I get a manual or automatic transmission?

Most rental vehicles in the U.K. and Europe are manual transmission. Cars with automatic transmission are more expensive to rent, adding to the cost of your European road trip. But this is not the time to learn if you don’t drive a stick shift at home. You don't want to be grinding gears and stalling out on the autobahn.

Do I need additional insurance?

Rental car insurance is expensive. Check what your home policies cover in advance (some credit cards may offer full or partial coverage) and adjust your rental coverage accordingly.

Inspect your rental car before you hit the road

It's often tempting to jump in the rental car and zoom off on your grand adventure. But inspecting your rental (and documenting any scratches and dings) before you depart protects you from getting charged for them later. You don't want to end your vacation on a sour note — or have this conversation in a language not native to you!

Additionally, take a moment to learn the location of headlights, wipers, hazard lights, and other safety features on your rental before starting your trip, so you won't have to fumble for them while driving unfamiliar roads.

Rent a car in a remote location

For our road trip in Norway, we started in Oslo. However, instead of picking up our car in that crowded city, we took the train to a suburban location and picked up our car there to explore the fjords. With fewer cars on the road, it was a less frenzied start to our journey.

Use a combination of printed maps and apps

Use a combination of old school and new school navigation tools when driving in Europe

Nothing ruins a European road trip like getting hopelessly lost. Depending on your destination, a GPS device in your rental car may be worth the price. We rely on a combination of GPS, apps, and paper maps for navigation. Old-school printed maps provide an overview of the area that a tiny screen can't manage and often highlight landmarks or scenic roads worth a detour.

Data connections can be spotty (and expensive) in remote areas, so download maps and directions before starting out for the day. Also, note that apps such as Google Maps might not be as accurate in Europe as in the U.S. — as we learned the hard way when it routed our car down a steep hiking trail in a German national park. Yikes!

Anticipate the costs of driving in Europe

Many European highways charge tolls. Sometimes, you can pay cash or credit as you go; other times, it's automated. Your rental car company can advise you on the best payment method. Also, fuel costs in Europe are approximately double that of the U.S., an important calculation to include in your Europe road trip planner. (Gas prices are listed per liter; multiply by 4 to approximate a per-gallon price.)

Other than avoiding toll roads, you can’t escape these costs. Consider it a necessary trip expense and enjoy your journey. Upon returning home, you’ll have a newfound appreciation for "low" gas prices in the United States.

Plan a general route in advance

Planning is key when it comes to a European road trip

Think about the sights you want to see and the type of road trip that makes the most sense for you. Making a large loop, going from point A to point B, or taking a series of day trips from a "home base" are all viable options. This may impact your rental car costs, lodging choices, and onward journey.

Be realistic about distances

American road trips conjure images of zipping through wide open spaces along the interstate. When exploring Europe by car, it's important to adjust your mindset to more densely populated countries with shorter distances (and those winding country lanes). You may not rack up thousands of miles, but you'll likely find charming towns and interesting sights more frequently.

Don't be caught "hangry"

Restaurants (even simple cafes) in many European small towns still observe traditional mealtime hours; don't count on finding something open at any random time of day. If you don't want to be tied to a rigid food schedule, pack a picnic lunch and a few nibbles to stave off grumbling stomachs and grumpy conversations.

The exception to this rule is rest stops on major motorways. These restaurants usually have flexible hours and serve up good food. When did you last see fresh salads and desserts served with china at a highway rest stop back home?

Know where you'll sleep

Whether you’re staying in a hotel, an RV, or a tent, make sure you've arranged for accommodations as part of your European road trip planning. Travelers are visiting Europe in record numbers post-COVID; you don't want to be stuck camping by a busy road or getting the last motel room next to a dumpster.

What is the best European road trip?

Visit charming villages, such as Meersburg, Germany, on a European road trip

The best European road trip depends on what interests you. If you're unsure where to start, here are some trips we've taken and loved.

Experience the Black Forest on a road trip through Germany

Enjoy a mixture of old and new with postcard scenery of the Black Forest's quaint half-timbered villages (and famous Black Forest cake!), while cruising the high-speed thrills of the autobahn. Make pitstops at the headquarters of Porsche and Mercedes-Benz . Vroom!

Best route : Start in Stuttgart or Munich outskirts.

Driving along the autostrada in Sicily during an Italy road trip

Explore Sicily on a road trip through Italy

Take a week or two to circumnavigate the island, visiting ancient Roman and Greek (!) ruins, the stunning Mount Etna volcano, and gorgeous beaches. Pizza, pasta, gelato, repeat.

Best route : Start and finish at Palermo Airport.

Tour Brittany on a road trip through France

Explore amazing Mont Saint-Michel, see dramatic coastlines with quaint harbor towns, and marvel at the prehistoric monoliths at Carnac, all while eating crepes and sipping cider.

Best route : Take the train from Paris to Rennes, then loop through the region.)

No matter where you choose to go on your Europe road trip, remember that the journey is the destination; indulge your curiosity. It’s the little detours and unscheduled stops that make the trip fun.
