How Many Disney Cruises to Hawaii Are There?

In comparison with other Disney Cruise Line destinations, Hawaii has significantly fewer sailings than other itineraries. There are typically two to four Disney Cruises visiting Hawaii each year .

Experienced and adventurous cruisers may prefer these extended Disney cruises to Hawaii and Disney South Pacific cruises, spending more time in Disney’s Hawaiian ports of call and aboard the magnificent Disney Wonder out at sea. About the Disney Hawaiian Cruise Terminals

Honolulu Harbor | Image © State of Hawaii

Disney’s 2023 and 2024 Hawaiian Cruises are all one-way cruises. Your cruise will start in either:

  • Vancouver (British Columbia), Canada
  • Honolulu, Hawaii

You’ll end in one of the remaining two ports.

Given that most travelers from the US will be traveling from either Honolulu or Vancouver, we’re focusing on these two ports below.

Disney Cruise Line Honolulu Terminal

During one-way Hawaiian cruises, Disney Cruise Line departs and arrives at Honolulu Harbor (aka the Port of Honolulu). Located on the southern coast of Oahu Island, Honolulu is Hawaii’s largest seaport and capital city. The harbor is deep and protected, ideal for cruises.

Honolulu Harbor has two cruise terminals – the Aloha Tower Cruise Terminal (Pier 11) and Terminal Pier 2. Disney Cruise Line uses Pier 2, which offers modern passenger amenities and luggage storage for a nominal fee.

As the state’s principal airport, Honolulu International Airport offers regular domestic and international flights. It is easily accessible by Uber, taxi, or Oahu Island’s public transportation. The Port of Honolulu is about five miles from Honolulu International Airport.

What is Disney Cruise Line’s Address at the Honolulu Harbor?

Here is the Honolulu Harbor Port Terminal address:

These services can help you arrive at the port on time and without the added stress of finding parking. Additionally, since this is a one-way cruise, leaving your car at home may be more practical.

Disney Cruise Line Returns to Hawaii in 2022

Disney Cruise Line is headed back to Hawaii. The line has announced their early 2022 itineraries, which include ten-night Hawaiian Islands cruises, as well as an assortment of voyages to the Bahamas, Caribbean, and Mexico.

In this article:

Disney Wonder will head back to the 50th state in early 2022 for two special ten-night cruises: a one-way from Vancouver to Honolulu on April 26, and a return sailing to Vancouver on May 6. Port calls include Nawiliwili, Kahului, and Hilo, with plenty of days at sea to enjoy the ship.

Travelers can easily combine a stay at Disney World with a Disney cruise in early 2022 with two ships sailing from Port Canaveral — just an hour away from Orlando — and a third ship from Miami.

Every voyage from Florida early in the year will include a stop at Disney’s private Bahamian island, Castaway Cay. The line will also offer cruises from Galveston and New Orleans.

castaway cay bahamas disney cruise

Disney Fantasy will begin 2022 with a six-night Western Caribbean cruise from Port Canaveral, followed by seven-night voyages to the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

Disney Dream,  also sailing from Port Canaveral, will operate three and four-night cruises to Nassau and Castaway Cay. One special four-night cruise will include two stops at Castaway Cay, which the line calls a “double-dip” cruise. These voyages are uncommon but extremely popular, so those who want to take this double-dip voyage should book as soon as reservations become available.

Disney Magic  will sail four and five-night cruises to the Bahamas, as well as five-night Western Caribbean voyages. One special three-night sailing to Castaway Cay and Key West will also be available.

Disney Wonder  will set sail for the Western Caribbean early in the year, first from Galveston with four-night cruises, followed by four and six-night voyages from New Orleans. A special six-night Bahamian voyage from both Galveston and New Orleans will also be offered, including stops in Castaway Cay and Key West.

In March and April 2022, Disney Wonder will return to San Diego to offer a cruise to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. Most of these voyages will call on the charming city of Ensenada, known for its rugged mountains and turquoise blue water.

A two-night cruise to Ensenada will be offered, giving guests an adventurous weekend away from home. Four and five-night Baja cruises include a visit to Cabo San Lucas and Catalina Island.

disney wish

Originally slated to debut in early 2022, Disney Wish ‘s maiden voyage was pushed back to summer 2022 due to pandemic-related delays at the Meyer-Werft shipyard in Germany. The vessel will weigh in at around 144,000 gross tons and have 1,250 guest staterooms, making it just a bit larger than the line’s current biggest ships, Disney Dream and Fantasy .

And as the cruise industry moves towards becoming more environmentally-conscious as a whole, Disney Wish will be powered by liquefied natural gas, one of the cleanest-burning fuels available.

Bookings for early 2022 Disney Cruise Line cruises open on October 19, 2020 for Platinum Castaway Club members, October 20 for Gold members, October 21 for Silver members, and on October 22 to the general public.

Thinking about a Disney Cruise Line vacation? You’re thinking, right! Chances are you’ve got a few questions before committing. No worries! We’ve got you covered. Check out these top 10 questions and answered about taking that dream cruise with a Disney Cruise Line vacation!

Editor’s Note: Be advised that sailings are cancelled on board the Disney Fantasy through December 6; the Disney Dream and Disney Wonder through December 11; and the Disney Magic through December 12, 2020.

1 – Which ship is best?

The Disney Cruise Line (DCL) currently consists of four ships, with more ships planned for the near future! Selecting just one ship as the  BEST  is rather tricky as they all have unique qualities that put them above and beyond most other cruise lines. The Disney  Magic  first set sail in 1998 with the Disney  Wonder  beginning its voyage shortly after in 1999. Both ships have a passenger capacity of 2,400 and are very similar in layout. The Disney  Magic  keeps to the east coast while the Disney  Wonder  travels in the west coast area. Several years later, in 2011, the DCL introduced the Disney  Dream,  followed by the Disney  Fantasy  in 2012.   Dream  and  Fantasy  are much larger than the  Magic  and  Wonder , as each of their passenger capacities, is 4,000. Both  Dream  and  Fantasy  are on the east coast with Port Canaveral as their homeport. All four ships are superb in cleanliness and maintenance as they are cared for non-stop. The service and activities are paramount, leaving it difficult to select just one as the best. We will say; however, most polls of DCL travelers say the Disney  Fantasy  is their top pick!

2 – What’s included in the price of a DCL?

When people see the price of the DCL, they tend to have sticker shock. It is one of the most expensive cruise options, but you most definitely get what you pay for! The basic price includes your stateroom, meals plus snacks and ice cream, soft drinks and other beverage station drinks, character meet and greets, award-winning entertainment, current in-theater Disney films, and top of the line service. Some things not included are alcohol, signature dining, spa services, and port excursions. The truth is, yes – it’s expensive, but with Disney, you know the kind of experience you are going to get.

3 – What documents do I need to bring?

The real question is, where are you headed? The DCL fleet travels to several different ports depending on which ship you are on and when you are sailing. Canada, Spain, Caribbean, Italy, Hawaii, New York, England, Texas… are more – there is no shortage of dream destination cruises with the DCL. The safest bet is always to have a Passport and ID with you when exiting the ship at a port. Whether you are planning to experience one of the many port excursions or just staying close to the ship, once you exit, you’ll need the appropriate documentation to get back on. Follow your cruise guidelines as Disney will provide you with the information you need as to what documentation is necessary.

4 – What is Castaway Cay?

Simply put… it’s AMAZING! But if that’s not enough – Castaway Cay is Disney’s privately-owned island in the Bahamas. DCL ships are the only ships allowed to port here, making it an island oasis away from the hustle and bustle of life. Pristine beaches and lush landscape, it’s a tropical stop worth exploring for the day at port. Castaway Cay has a family beach and an adult beach, slides, water splash/play area, natural paths, shopping, dining, character meet and greets, and even its own Post Office! If we could live there, we would.

5 – Is there anything for adults on the DCL?

A common misconception is that the DCL is for kids only. This is false in so many ways! With or without kids, the DCL has you covered. There are multiple adult-only areas, including dining, lounges, and pools for guests 18 and older. There are also several adult-only activities and meetups that include anything from dancing to trivia.

6 – Are the Kids Clubs free?

Speaking of adult-only time, did you know each DCL ship has Kids Clubs available onboard? The kids will have a blast playing games, making crafts, and hanging out with characters. Highly trained Cast Members are readily available to care for your child while you take some adult time, as mentioned above. Kids Clubs are, in fact,  FREE,  including Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Lab (ages 3-12), Disney’s Edge (ages 11-14), and Disney’s Vibe (ages 14-17). Your kids will be asking to go! This is all free, except for the “It’s a Small World” Nursery for ages 6 months – 3 years. There are charges here as this form of childcare is more hands-on with the little ones.

7 – What is Rotational Dining?

The DCL offers what they call “Rotational Dining,” and it has become a favorite for many DCL guests. Each night, you’ll have a scheduled restaurant to dine at that is included in your cruise price. You’ll rotate to a different restaurant each night, doubling up on a few restaurants depending on how long you are cruising. This is a great way to experience all the restaurants and their beautiful dining themes. The great part is that your server team moves from restaurant to restaurant with you, so you can expect to see the same sweet faces night after night. They get to know your favorite drinks, what you like and don’t like, and even your kids’ names. It’s an excellent way to dine!

8 – Can I bring alcohol with me?

We’re glad you asked! Alcohol may not be included in your cruise price, but you are welcome to bring some on board with you. Each guest 21 years or older can bring a maximum of 2 unopened bottles of wine or champagne no larger than 750ml. If you’re not a wine or champagne fan, you can bring 6 beers that are no larger than 12 ounces instead of the wine or champagne. You can bring these items on board at the beginning of each port of call. Just be sure the alcohol is with your carry-on bags, as it is not allowed to be checked.

9 – Will I see any characters?

Yes! And lots of them! Character meet and greets are what adds that Pixie Dust on the Disney Cruise Line. Don’t be surprised if you see Mickey Mouse in his Captain suit, Captain Hook stirring up trouble, and even a plethora of Princesses. The DCL App is a perfect guide for the many meet and greet schedules so you’ll know when and where you can find Stitch, Goofy, Minnie, Donald, and so many other Disney pals on board. Plus, the characters change outfits regularly, so be prepared to visit characters a second time if you desire.

10 – What type of entertainment is on the DCL?

Maybe it would be easier to ask, what type of entertainment does the DCL  NOT offer?! Let’s just say you won’t be bored even on your Day(s) at Sea. While at the port, you’ll have incredible Port Adventures (aka excursions). On the ship, you can count on Broadway-style musicals to be available daily in the Theatre. There are current Disney films you’ll find in the theaters back home being played in the theater onboard. Get ready for multiple deck shows, dance parties, and even fireworks. There are live musicians available in the adult lounges and in the grand lobby many of the nights. You can shop till you drop in the numerous gift shops. Play anything from basketball to mini-golf on deck. Relax with top-of-the-line Spa and Salon treatments. Go on a ship scavenger hunt as a detective. Or take a dip in one of the many pools or water coaster. No shortage of entertainment here! You can count on the DCL, keeping you as busy or as relaxed as you want.

Disney Cruise Line Announces Health and Safety Protocols for Alaska & Hawaii

dcl hawaii cruise

Guests booked on Alaska and Hawaii itineraries between April 26th and September 19th on the  Disney Wonder  will be receiving communication from Disney Cruise Line today detailing current health and safety protocols, including additional requirements for cruise passengers visiting Canada.

Guests booked on the Disney Wonder from April 26th through September 19th may modify their sail date or cancel their sailing without any Disney-imposed cancellation fees by March 30, 2022.

COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS

Currently, Disney Cruise Line continues to require all vaccine-eligible guests (based on U.S. eligibility requirements) to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at the time of sailing, as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This is a requirement for all guests (U.S. and international) ages 5 and older.

In consideration of guidance from the CDC and the World Health Organization, Disney Cruise Line accepts the following vaccine types: Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca, Covishield, Novavax, Sinopharm, and Sinovac.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines fully vaccinated as 14 days after receiving:

  • a single-dose of an accepted 1-dose vaccine
  • the second dose of an accepted 2-dose vaccine
  • the full series of an active (not placebo) COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S.-based AstraZeneca or Novavax COVID-19 vaccine trials
  • the second dose of any “mix-and-match” combination of accepted COVID-19 vaccines (administered at least 17 days apart)

PRE-TRIP COVID-19 TESTING

Guests who are not vaccine-eligible, because of age, must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result (paid for by the guest) taken between 3 days and 24 hours before their sail date. Guests 4 years of age and under must complete these testing requirements.

The test should be a NAAT test, rapid PCR test, or lab-based PCR test. Rapid antigen tests are not accepted. Disney Cruise Line has secured a special rate of $98.33 per PCR test (which includes a 3.5% processing fee) through our third-party vendor, Inspire Diagnostics. Guests may also obtain their test from any independent testing supplier.

SAFE PASSAGE WEBSITE, BY INSPIRE DIAGNOSTICS:

In order to sail, all guests (adults and children, regardless of age) must upload their proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test results on the  Safe Passage  website by Inspire Diagnostics. A parent or legal guardian will need to use their own account to provide this information on behalf of minors. To learn more about how to provide proof of your negative COVID-19 test result, please visit the Before Leaving Home section of Disney Cruise Line’s  Know Before You Go information.

After appropriate documents have been uploaded and reviewed by Inspire, guests should see the words “Clear to Arrive” in the Pre-Sail Screening section when they log into their Safe Passage account before arriving at the port.

It is also recommended that guests bring a copy of their proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 PCR test result with them to the port. If you have any questions about your Safe Passage registration or status, please contact Inspire Diagnostics at 877-250-5132 .

EMBARKATION COVID-19 TESTING:

In consideration of guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all guests (regardless of age and vaccination status) are required to take a COVID-19 test (paid for by Disney Cruise Line and administered by Inspire Diagnostics) at the terminal before boarding. Guests with positive COVID-19 test results—as well as those sharing the same stateroom and their close contacts—will be denied boarding.

FACE COVERINGS

Face coverings are not required for guests outdoors while onboard the ship. Face coverings will be optional in most indoor locations throughout the ship. Guests under 5 years of age who are currently ineligible to be vaccinated will be required to wear face coverings in Youth Activity spaces and in the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique; and, while not required, we continue to strongly recommend these guests wear a face covering in all other indoor locations. Face coverings are required on motorcoach transportation and in the cruise terminal and may be required in ports of call based on local government requirements.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CRUISE PASSENGERS VISITING CANADA / DEBARKATION TESTING

Guests should review and stay up to date with any requirements or restrictions that may be in place for travel to Canada; visit the  Government of Canada’s website  for information.

Please note, the Canadian government requires all passengers to take a COVID-19 test before disembarking a cruise ship in Canada. Canadian authorities are also currently requiring international travelers to download and register via the  ArriveCAN  mobile application, Canada’s entry requirements program that must be completed prior to entry into Canada. Requirements include downloading the ArriveCAN app, uploading proof of COVID-19 vaccination, citizenship documentation, trip details, and answering health-related questions.

This will be our 3rd attempt to do a DCL Hawaii cruise and had booked previously, but Covid travel restrictions made the prospects appear unfavorable. Haven't purchased airline tickets yet, but over 50% of the cruise is paid via deposits from previously cancelled cruises, a placeholder (thanks to our amazing TA), and several D$'s awards from work. We love the classic ships; we love sea days; we love the Cast Members . . . This will be our return to Hawaii (27 years ago we honeymooned there) and we will spend a few days at a Marriott/Westin on O'ahu first. DW has a friend/classmate in Lihue, next to Nawilwili. It will be fun! Have been to Vancouver several times already, and depending on flights, we may try to fly back to EWR the same day we disembark. We always say we plan to do that . . .

DS (11 at time of cruising) and I will be on this one- I just booked it for us this past week. We did two covid style cruises back in late 2021/early 2022. We are excited to do a much longer cruise than before; as well as enjoy a post covid style cruise. There were still a ton of restrictions when we went previously. I've never been to Hawaii so really looking forward to exploring the islands!!

Just reviewed & consolidated our various Disney Gift Cards and Disney Visa Reward$'s to help us pay-in-full later this month. We have flights from EWR=>HNL and YVR=>EWR and will stay three days in Oahu prior. I am very excited. . I wish this cruise was in 3 weeks not 5 months . . . but plan to enjoy some other trips prior as well as the holiday season.

Anyone have tips for excursions their family loved or private tours? We are a family/group of 4 adults (in 40's & 50's), a 21 yr old and a 12 year old. We are trying to figure out what to book or do in Maui and in Hilo...I think we are set with Kauai plans. Should we worry about relying on Uber or Lyft for the second day?

  • Nov 1, 2023

We are PIF! We have friends in several of the islands, but not sure what to do in Maui.

AquaDame

  • Nov 2, 2023

When in doubt, snorkel! We've been on Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island as well and have enjoyed snorkeling off Maui the most. Our favorite operator is Trilogy, we've done all their tours at least once. https://sailtrilogy.com/ If snorkeling is not your thing, whales should still be around if you enjoy being on boats. Paia is a cute town to wander and relatively close to Kahului, little hippie, little artsy, and Makawao is a little more inland and a little more rustic. Lunch or dinner at Mama's Fishouse is soooo good but expensive. A cheaper lunch would be grabbing poke from Foodland. A bit further north from Mama's is Ho'okipa Beach Park which is a great place to see lazy sea turtles on the sand and active surfers playing in the waters. Odds are good you can see turtles in the shallows if you keep your eyes peeled at just about any beach though too. If you rent a car be prepared for Island Time... speeds are low on most of the island and folk are not in a hurry. Leave extra time. We usually do Haleakala for sunrise or at dusk and beyond for star viewing; not sure how it holds up during the daytime but so pretty during those hours. The four seasons down in Wailea is where they filmed some of the White Lotus which is neat if you're a fan. There is also a fancy golf course and fancy mall there... its a wee bit posh. There are also short hikes all over if that is your bag.... it just kind of depends on what sort of things you like doing. Maui has lots of fabulous beaches of course too, it IS Hawaii after all. We usually stay down in Kihei but drive all over when we visit.

Thank you! That is all super helpful. Much appreciated!

DW and I are looking forward to the cruise. We booked a private tour in Hilo through Toursbylocals. In general, the guides were extremely expensive, which surprised me, but the one that we booked was pretty reasonable for an all-day private tour. We're doing Disney excursions the other days. I was surprised so few of the ones listed in the Hawaii Port Adventures page will be offered for this particular cruise.

Re the few number of port adventures offered through Disney, I can’t speak to all of them but for a few I researched, I found the vendors were not offering them at this time; at least one has not yet come back after Covid. So, it’s not all on Disney that not many were able to be offered. Happy sailing! Click to expand...

I guess Pearls grabbed all the early port times, since the first slot available when I checked in was 12:45, group 8.

  • Wednesday at 7:27 PM

We have friends in Hilo, Oahu and Lihue (Kawai) who will all take us around a bit (no helicopter rides). Also we have an idea for the 2nd day at Lihue. In Maui, we are renting a vehicle at Kahului Airport and doing our own tour of Central Maui (no Hana, no boat/sail trips, no Haleakala bicycle rides) tourism spots. The Disney Port Excursions were mostly sold out and the ToursbyLocals were like $1,000 for a group of 4. Renting a car costs $65~$100/day and we have a plan. We had our honeymoon in Hawaii 27yrs ago. We saw many highlights on the same 4 islands, and we were more adventuresome and nimble then.

  • Thursday at 1:02 PM

I think we (myself and DS 11.5) finally have the plan or what resembles an outline for us. We are only silver so we were very limited on Disney Excursions to choose from once it opened up for us. And as others have already said I am disappointed in what is actually available for Disney ran excursions based on what they show as potential port adventures. It is what is and we will make do! We decided on doing the Disney Maui Snorkeling experience as it was still available! We may end up canceling if I can find an alternative for cheaper that is within our time limits- $688 for two people to snorkel is a bit more than I was expecting. The other three days we had zero choices to choose from. I think when I checked yesterday there was one that opened up for the grotto river tour but it econflicts with our Luau time. We've opted for renting a car at the Hilo port and drive around to see the sites. Also renting a car for the two days we are in Kauai. We decided to get tickets for a Luau Monday evening and then mountain tubing Tuesday morning. We are sooo excited and can not wait!!! I do have a question - where are you all staying beforehand? And how do you plan to get to the port? We are staying in Waikiki and would love to take the bus as it's super cheap and almost gets us to the front door of the port but they don't allow luggage on the city buses. Alternatively looked at getting a shuttle direct from hotel to port but those are running $40+ for the two of us. We might just chance it and grab a lyft/uber morning off and hope there isn't a crazy surge price happening. One follow up question that might be better suited for the broader forum: I want to book brunch for just myself. But every time I see an open brunch time it never lets me book. What are the chances of me getting a brunch spot if I try to reserve the day we board? Or do I get my TA involved now to call Disney ahead of time (is that even a thing? haha)?

A unique Disney experience: Here's what you can't miss on Disney Cruise Lines

Posted: November 22, 2023 | Last updated: November 22, 2023

Disney Cruise Line is synonymous with family vacations at sea, so you might think that every Disney cruise in 2024 will be a good choice for families. And having sailed on every one of Disney's cruise ships myself, I can say the simple answer is yes, that's absolutely true. But some Disney cruise experiences hold an extra special place in my family's heart, and they've made me realize that certain Disney cruises can go above and beyond even DCL's usual family-friendly standard.

I'm thinking about when we met Disney’s "Frozen" friends in person on a Norway sailing or laughed to tears over dinner with Crush the Sea Turtle ("cha dude!"), or completed a 5K race with my daughter on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay . That's why my picks for the best Disney cruises for families in 2024 are all about these kinds of extra special experiences, the ones that aren't just the usual level of Disney cruise line magic but will elevate your family vacation into once-in-a-lifetime "cherished family memory" territory.

Find a deal: Kids sail free: 6 cruise lines that let kids cruise for free

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

There will be no shortage of these kinds of opportunities on Disney Cruise Line (DCL) in 2024. From being among the first to visit Disney's brand-new private island destination to enjoying an immersive Pixar-themed day at sea to setting sail on the maiden voyage of Disney's newest ship , here are the Disney cruise experiences I think will go above and beyond in 2024.

1. Disney Magic to Lighthouse Point, DCL's newest private island destination

One thing my family looks forward to during any Disney cruise is a stop at DCL's private island, Castaway Cay. In 2024, Disney Cruise Line will unveil its second private island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. And I can’t wait to see how they plan to outdo the already incredible Castaway Cay experience.

Family cruises: 7 best cruise lines for families (and their 12 most kid-friendly ships)

Similar to when Disney created its Aulani resort in Hawaii , Disney Imagineers have been working with local artists and cultural experts to design an authentic Bahamian island experience at Lighthouse Point. Curvilinear buildings are meant to evoke scattered seashells along the shore, and a Bahamian Art and Culture Pavilion will feature special programs and local artists that celebrate Bahama traditions.

A special preview cruise to Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the Disney Magic departs from Fort Lauderdale in June 2024.

2. Alaska and Australia cruises on the Disney Wonder in 2024

When my youngest daughter graduated from high school, my wife and I asked where she wanted to go for our family vacation to celebrate her milestone . Her top choice was Alaska. In the summer months, Disney Cruise Line positions one of its smaller ships, the Disney Wonder, out west so families can take weeklong sailings from Vancouver to the "Last Frontier." Along the way, you can experience majestic wildlife and stunning scenery while calling on Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and glacier viewing along the Stikine Icecap.

No hidden costs: 7 best all-inclusive cruise lines in the world

But that's not all the Disney Wonder gets up to! In 2023, Disney also began offering Australia and New Zealand cruises onboard the ship, and that will continue in 2023 and 2024. Disney Cruise Line has announced a new season of sailings in the region from October 2024 through February 2025.

The Disney Wonder is one of DCL's original class of ships, and with a capacity of 2,713 passengers, it remains one of the line's most intimate vessels. That's a reason to love it. Both the Wonder and its sister ship, Disney Magic, are especially great Disney cruise options in 2024 if your family is new to cruising . Far from being a drawback, the smaller size makes it less likely to feel overwhelming to first-timers.

3. European vacations on the Disney Dream

In 2023, Disney Cruise Line sent the Disney Dream across the Atlantic for the first time. The ship will head back to Europe in 2024 with summer cruises in the Mediterranean, Greek Isles, British Isles, Iceland, and Norwegian fjords. These are the best 2024 Disney Cruises for experiencing new ports of call like Valencia, Spain; Haugesund, Norway; and Hamburg, Germany, along with three Mediterranean destinations (Catania, Italy; Kusadasi, Turkey; and Valletta, Malta) that Disney will visit for the first time since 2014.

Make memories: Why a Holland America heritage cruise Is perfect for a multigenerational family vacation

In June, the Disney Dream sails from Civitavecchia (Rome) with stops in Naples and three different Greek Islands, including Mykonos and Crete. In July, the ship transitions to northern European cruises, including a 12-night voyage departing from England (Southampton) on July 24, heading through the Norwegian fjords, three days in Iceland, and an overnight stay in Reykjavik before returning to Southampton.

My family sailed on Disney’s inaugural Norwegian fjords cruise in 2015, and it was hands down our best family vacation because of the Disney-specific experiences no other cruise line can offer, such as Anna and Elsa from "Frozen" posing for pictures at a Norwegian Village museum in Ålesund.

4. Disney Cruise Line's private island trifecta on the Disney Fantasy

Many fans of Disney Cruise Line’s private island get particularly excited when itineraries include a Castaway Cay "double dip," i.e., two stops at Castaway Cay. But in 2024, the Disney Fantasy ventures on a seven-night itinerary that calls on Disney’s private islands not once, not twice, but three times with a stop at Castaway Cay and two visits to the brand-new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Splash zone: 50 best cruise ship water parks and private islands for kids

I love Disney’s Castaway Cay and have enjoyed so many relaxing stops to the island. I especially remember learning the "stingray shuffle" and holding stingrays during Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure. I love that this 2024 Disney cruise will give families plenty of time to explore Disney’s brand-new private island destination on the southernmost tip of Eleuthera without overlooking a day at the old favorite.

5. Disney Wish theme park and cruise vacation

The Disney Wish is DCL's newest ship (for now), debuting in July 2022 and offering three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Florida . The close proximity of Port Canaveral to Walt Disney World makes it easy to combine an Orlando theme park vacation with a Disney Cruise.

Know before you go: 6 things you didn’t know you could do on a Disney Cruise

Disney land and sea vacations are the best of both worlds for families with theme park lovers who want to go, go, go, and other family members looking for a more laidback experience. My advice is to head to the theme parks first, get tired out from the walking, rides, and stimulation, and then sail off on a four-night cruise to decompress. My wife and I enjoyed the most expansive stateroom ever when we sailed on the Disney Wish last summer and it couldn't have been more relaxing.

6. Themed Cruises – Pixar, Marvel, and holidays

In January, I had the opportunity to experience Pixar Day at Sea , Disney Cruise Line’s newest themed cruise, on the Disney Fantasy. In my review for FamilyVacationist, I called it an " overflowing toy box of fun " and I'm excited for more families to experience it on a Disney cruise in 2024. The cruise was packed with so many Pixar character meets, themed-activities, special shows, foods, and treats that some of it spilled into additional days at sea. In 2024, Pixar Day at Sea returns to the Disney Fantasy on seven-night Caribbean sailings from January through March.

Set sail: These 6 cruise lines offer the best themed cruises

Disney's themed cruise days aren't limited to Pixar, either. There's a Marvel Day at Sea on five-night Disney Dream cruises departing Fort Lauderdale from January through March, and when the festive season rolls around most of the ships offer holiday sailings with Halloween on the High Seas and Very Merrytime cruises.

I was so impressed with the Halloween tree in the ship's atrium when my family sailed on a Halloween cruise. Over the course of the cruise, the tree "bloomed" with spooky Jack-o-lanterns. In addition, Disney characters were decked out in costumes, there was trick-or-treating, and other special activities. And of course Very Merrytime cruises have a tree-lighting ceremony, Mickey and Minnie’s Holiday Party, carolers, special drinks and treats, and appearances by the guest of honor for the cruise, Santa Claus.

7. Disney Treasure Sets Course for Adventure

Last but not least, Disney Treasure joins the Disney Cruise Line fleet with its maiden voyage on December 21, 2024. Adventure is the theme for Disney's sixth cruise ship with spaces and entertainment inspired by "Aladdin," "Coco," "Zootopia," "Jungle Cruise," even "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."

Before you book: Everything you need to know about river cruises in the U.S.

As a fan of the Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise ride and Skipper Canteen restaurant, I can’t wait to get immersed in the kitschy 1930s adventure vibe onboard the Disney Treasure. The ship will sail seven-night itineraries to the eastern and western Caribbean and have a theater-in-the-round restaurant at the Plaza de Coco as well as a cinematic dining experience at Worlds of Marvel. Because these are longer cruises than those available on DCL's other ship in the same class (Disney Wish), you can experience two distinct shows in each of these venues during a voyage.

The 16 best alaska shore excursions for 2024.

Venture off the boat to see wildlife, glaciers, railways and more.

The Best Alaska Shore Excursions

Bering Sea Crab Fisherman’s Tour

Courtesy of Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour

A cruise to Alaska is one of the best ways to visit many parts of the 49th state, including the Inside Passage and the southeastern port towns of Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway. You can also see dozens of glaciers on a cruise, plus remote places reachable only by water, like Glacier National Park & Preserve. Traveling by ship allows you to get closer to one-of-a-kind experiences in Alaska's interior, especially if you extend your vacation with a cruisetour (a package that includes the cruise and a land portion either before or after your voyage).

When it comes to excursions, many cruise lines offer the same experiences ashore for larger ports of call, often with a slight variation in the itinerary. The most popular tours highlight the best activities and attractions, such as the Mendenhall Glacier Ice Adventure Tour in Juneau, the Misty Fjords National Monument in Ketchikan and the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway in Skagway. You'll also find entertaining offerings from cruise lines that call on smaller, less visited ports, like Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Sitka, Seward and Haines.

While some tours cost less than $100, don't be surprised to find over-the-top experiences that run about $750 per person – such as heli-flightseeing tours, where you'll land on a glacier and go dog-sledding with a team of Alaskan huskies. If you're comfortable with going it on your own, you might find lower prices on some excursions by booking directly with tour operators. Alaskan outfitters are used to working around cruise ship arrival and departure times, so their tours tend to fit into those schedules.

U.S. News has compiled this list to help you find the best Alaska shore excursions, from the most popular (and affordable) options to once-in-a-lifetime adventures.

Even though it's surrounded by water and mountains – and there's no road into town – Juneau is one of the most visited ports in Alaska, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer. You'll find plenty to do in Alaska's capital, including whale watching tours, salmon bakes and more.

Mendenhall Glacier

Alaska

The Mendenhall Glacier is one of the top attractions in Juneau, so many tours include a visit to the Tongass National Forest to view the 12-mile-long sheet of blue ice. Some cruise lines, like Princess Cruises , offer self-guided trekking excursions that include a ride on the Juneau Goldbelt Tram, which affords views of the Chilkat Mountains and other panoramic scenery. You can also opt to see the glacier from the water by boat or kayak, or on a float trip.

However, if you're going to splurge on any one excursion, it's this one: Sign up for a helicopter landing on Mendenhall Glacier, followed by a dog-sledding adventure with a team of Alaskan huskies. During the approximately 30-minute helicopter ride, you'll fly over rainforests and spectacular summits, but the real fun is when you arrive at the camp to go zipping through the snow led by your team of dogs and a professional musher.

The Mendenhall Glacier helicopter excursion is offered on Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, Viking Ocean Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line and Silversea Cruises.

Whale Watching and Wildlife Quest

Alaska

Whale watching is another top activity when visiting Juneau, and many cruise lines offer several options for tours. Holland America Line has a five-hour, small-group excursion for just 20 guests; you'll search for humpback whales on a safari vessel, then hike on Mendenhall Glacier where you can look for beavers, Arctic terns, porcupines and black bears. If you prefer an even smaller group, Princess Cruises offers a 3.5-hour private whale watching tour for six people. Possible sightings include humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, eagles, harbor seals, lighthouses, glaciers and maybe even a bear along the shoreline.

One of Viking Ocean Cruises ' excursions, the Best of Juneau, lasts more than six hours and takes guests on a naturalist-led whale watching cruise by catamaran. Before heading back to shore, you'll have a lunch of local wild-caught Alaska salmon on remote Colt Island, followed by a scenic drive to Mendenhall Glacier to end the day.

Alaska whale watching and wildlife excursions are offered on Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Viking Ocean Cruises, Silversea Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line.

Taku Lodge Salmon Bake

Alaska

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a 3.5-hour Taku Glacier Lodge Flight & Feast excursion that will tick several quintessential Alaska adventures off your bucket list. After flying over the Juneau Icefield (the fifth-largest ice field in North America) in a classic De Havilland seaplane, guests will land in the river at the historic Taku Glacier Lodge across from Juneau's largest glacier, the 5-mile-wide Taku Glacier.

A traditional Alaska salmon bake (with all the fixings) and drinks made with glacier ice are another highlight of the day. You might even see a black bear sniffing around for leftovers after your feast. Following lunch, take a walk in the lush Tongass National Forest before heading back from the wilderness.

Salmon bake excursions are offered on Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Viking Ocean Cruises, Silversea Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line.

Alaska

Ketchikan sits at the southernmost entrance to Alaska's Inside Passage. It is one of the most visited ports in Alaska, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Visitors come to this part of the state for the beautiful scenery, Alaska Native culture and fresh seafood, including Alaska salmon and king crab. And they just might enjoy an entertaining lumberjack show or floatplane ride to kick off their day while in town.

The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show

USA

Watch Alaska's hearty lumberjacks battle British Columbia's tough woodsmen in a head-to-head competition to see who can win the title of "Bull of the Woods." The thrill-a-minute show – a guest favorite – features a 50-foot tree climb, ax throwing, log rolling, buck sawing and springboard chopping, along with plenty of lumberjack lore. Some lines, like Princess Cruises, offer just the show; it lasts a little over an hour, so there will be plenty of time for a self-guided tour of Ketchikan before heading back to the ship. You may also be able to book a combination tour that includes the show and an ax throwing lesson (plus a competition of your own), or a trip to Totem Bright State Park, where you'll learn about the significance of totem poles and the Native Tlingit and Haida cultures.

Holland America Line offers a tour with the lumberjack show and a feast of local Dungeness crabs. For another culinary option, check out the 3.5-hour excursion with Norwegian Cruise Line . It includes a visit to Saxman Native Village, where you'll sample smoked wild game meats, dine on chef-selected dishes prepared with regional ingredients, and taste local wines and beers.

Lumberjack shows are offered on Alaska voyages with Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises , Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises.

Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour

Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour

Embark on the Aleutian Ballard, the Bering Sea fishing boat made famous by the Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" television series. The approximately three-hour excursion gives guests a firsthand experience of what it's like to sail on the vessel as a Bering Sea crab fisherman and catch massive king crabs, octopuses and other marine life with 700-pound crab pots. The boat may also stop at nearby Annette Island, where you'll have the chance to see whales, sea lions, seals and bald eagles soaring overhead (one may even try to snag your catch!). You may also get to watch local fishermen at work.

Some lines that offer the fisherman's tour include Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, Viking Ocean Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises.

Misty Fjords by Floatplane or Cruise

Alaska

The more than 2 million-acre Misty Fjords National Monument is one of the top attractions in Alaska . Described by naturalist and author John Muir as "the Yosemite of the North," the awe-inspiring destination is best viewed from above on a floatplane. From the sky, you'll see towering 1,000-foot waterfalls, the volcanic Revillagigedo Island, snowcapped peaks, verdant forests and 3,000-foot walls of granite descending into the fjords. On a floatplane tour, you'll also have the chance to land on the water and take in the spectacular scenery from another viewpoint.

If you're not a fan of small planes, some lines offer the option of taking a cruise from Ketchikan's harbor. You'll sail into Behm Canal surrounded by the scenery of Misty Fjords, and you may even see wildlife or bald eagle nests. You'll also cruise by Eddystone Rock, a massive volcanic spire emerging from the sea, as well as waterfalls and 3,000-foot cliffs sculpted by glaciers.

Cruise lines that offer floatplane or cruisetours of Misty Fjords include Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Viking Ocean Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

Alaska

Skagway is another busy and popular cruise port in Alaska. It's one of the most popular towns on the Inside Passage itinerary; its fascinating Klondike Gold Rush history dates back to 1897. Take notice of the historic false-front shops reminiscent of the gold rush days as you explore. Many of these buildings are part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, and you may even see people strolling down the streets dressed in period costumes.

White Pass & Yukon Route

Alaska

One of the top-rated attractions in Skagway is the White Pass Summit Scenic Railroad journey through Alaska's wilderness. The narrow-gauge railroad is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark – an honor shared by the Panama Canal, the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower. Dating back 125 years, the historic railway features vintage rail cars and climbs to a steep 2,865 feet at the summit over just 20.4 miles. Along the way to the summit – located at the official international border between the U.S. and Canada – you'll listen to the history of the Klondike Gold Rush while passing by Inspiration Point, Dead Horse Gulch and Bridal Veil Falls. After making a loop at the top, the train will head back down the mountain. You might even see snow on the ride if your cruise to Alaska is early in the season.

Excursions on some lines combine the rail journey with other activities, like biking on the Klondike Highway from the summit or visiting Liarsville, a gold rush trail camp. Others include a stop (and a cold beer) at the Skagway Brewing Company. In addition, some cruise providers offer the train ride in a luxury class rail car, which includes complimentary beverages, snacks and a private guide who will explain the history of the railroad as you watch the scenery pass by.

Norwegian Cruise Line's six-hour excursion features a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Route, a salmon bake at Liarsville and an adult beverage with one of the "madames" at the renowned Red Onion Saloon. Meanwhile, Silversea Cruises ' new 5.5-hour tour includes the train ride; a trip to the Yukon Suspension Bridge, which sits 65 feet above the white water rapids of the Tutshi River; and a hearty lunch of bison chili.

Cruise lines that offer the railroad (and combination) tours include Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Musher's Camp and Sled Dog Discovery

Alaska

If you want to cuddle with Alaskan husky puppies, then this excursion is for you. Norwegian Cruise Line's approximately three-hour excursion takes guests to a professional musher's summer camp in Dyea Valley, where they train sled dogs for the Yukon Quest and Iditarod races. After a thrilling ride into the rainforest on a four-wheel-drive vehicle, you'll head out on a summertime dog sled with 16 Alaskan huskies at the helm. Before puppy play time, you'll learn how the mushers care for the dogs and prepare for the races. Depending on the cruise line, some tours may end with roasting s'mores by the fire.

Some lines that offer this excursion are Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Chilkoot Trail Hike and Float Adventure

Alaska

The historic Chilkoot Trail was the main route for those in search of untold riches during the famous gold rush years. Today, the trail, located in Gold Rush National Historical Park, is a rainforest full of birds and wildflowers. Excursions to the park include hikes with river floats on the Taiya River (there are no rapids) or bike tours of the trail. There are also wilderness kayaking outings to Chilkoot Lake, which is home to the five species of Pacific salmon, waterfowl, bald eagles and one of the largest brown bear populations in southeast Alaska.

Some cruise lines that offer these excursions include Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Alaska

Sitka is the only community in the Inside Passage that sits on the Pacific Ocean. The small city – home to just 8,500 residents – was owned by Russia before the U.S. purchased the land in 1867. Today, you'll find remnants of this Russian heritage, like onion-shaped domes and Saint Michael's Russian Orthodox Cathedral. Sitka also has a strong Tlingit culture. In terms of shore excursions, you'll find plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing surrounded by pristine landscapes.

Sea Otter and Wildlife Quest

Alaska

Royal Caribbean International's three-hour jet boat cruise on Sitka Sound features panoramic scenery (including snow-capped peaks) and the chance to see abundant wildlife. During the tour, look for playful sea otters, whales and brown bears walking along the coast. The line also offers another tour – Sea Otters, Raptors and Bears Oh My – that features a naturalist-guided catamaran cruise followed by visits to the Alaskan Raptor Center (a rehabilitation center for birds of prey) and the Fortress of the Bear (a rescue operation for orphaned bears).

In comparison, Carnival Cruise Line 's VIP wildlife quest in search of whales, sea otters, coastal brown bears and more concludes with a feast of wild salmon cooked over a wood-fired grill, Alaska crab and prime rib at the Fin Island Lodge. Following a wildlife Zodiac cruise around the archipelago, Holland America Line's version of this excursion also visits the lodge for lunch in partnership with Food & Wine magazine.

You can find this excursion on Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line.

The Best of Sitka

Alaska

Several cruise lines offer a version of this tour, which features an exploration of the top attractions in Sitka. On this excursion, you'll visit the Fortress of the Bear in Tongass National Park to learn about the facility's work with orphaned bears. There's also a stop at Sitka National Historical Park, where the 1804 "Battle of Alaska" between the Russians and the Tlingits was fought. Here, you'll see handcarved totem poles created by skilled Tlingit artists and get to meet local Native artists to learn more. The excursion also includes a visit to the Alaska Raptor Center.

Lines that offer this excursion include Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Alaska

Icy Strait Point in Hoonah may be a much smaller port than others on this list, but it is a jumping-off point for endless outdoor explorations, including whale watching tours and searching for coastal brown bears. Icy Strait Point is Alaska Native-owned and -operated and is home to the largest Native Tlingit village in Alaska. While here, explore the wilderness areas of Chichagoff Islands, visit the 1912 cannery museum, and grab lunch with fresh Alaska king and Dungeness crabs before taking a ride on the world's largest ZipRider. (Or, play it safe and plan to take that ride down the mountain before lunch.)

Whale Watching & Bear Search

Alaska

The waters surrounding Icy Strait Point host the largest summer population of humpback whales in the state, especially around the Point Adolphus area. If you purchase a tour directly with the Icy Strait Point website, they'll even guarantee you'll see whales – or they'll refund your money. During the tour, look for orcas, Steller sea lions, porpoises and seals. But be sure to also gaze overhead for bald eagles and search along the shore for bears; the Spasski River Valley in the remote wilderness of Chichagof Island has one of the highest densities of coastal brown bears in the world. Some cruise lines offer a variation of this excursion that includes a boiled seafood feast back on shore at Icy Strait Point.

You can find this excursion on voyages with Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Viking Ocean Cruises, Silversea Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Scenic Mountain Ascent & World's Largest ZipRider

Thrill-seekers (who love heights) will jump at the chance to ride the world's largest and longest zip line, which sits more than 1,300 feet above sea level at the top of Icy Strait Point. The ride to the summit on the SkyGlider mountaintop gondola is also a rush, but the real excitement comes as you zoom down 5,330-foot zip lines with five other riders at 60 mph – with views of the forest below and Glacier Bay National Park in the distance. A break-activated landing on the beach brings riders safely back to the ground. The price also includes unlimited rides on the gondola.

Cruise lines that offer this excursion include Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Viking Ocean Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line.

Alaska

A less visited port than some others on this list (according to CLIA), Seward is the ancestral home to the Alutiiq, or Sugpiaq, people. Its breathtaking natural beauty – with mountains on one side and Resurrection Bay on the other – has been shaped by glaciers over thousands of years. Top attractions in Seward include the Alaska SeaLife Center and a charming downtown area. It also offers access to Kenai Fjords National Park.

Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise

Alaska

During your stop in Seward, take a full-day excursion to see the astounding beauty of Kenai Fjords National Park. The impressive fjords are surrounded by mountains standing more than 6,000 feet tall and an ecosystem rich in wildlife. While there, watch for a variety of whale species, sea otters, porpoises and sea lions, and onshore, you might see bears and mountain goats. There are also 191 documented species of birds in the park and many glaciers. As you get up close to Holgate Glacier, listen as chunks of blue ice calve into the water.

Some cruise lines, such as Viking Ocean Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, offer this as an individual tour, while others like Holland America Line include it as part of a cruisetour. You can also book the excursion directly with a local tour operator if you're embarking or disembarking in Seward.

Alaska

Haines, a small port about 20 miles north of Skagway, is best known for its Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. The 49,000-acre preserve has the largest natural gathering of eagles during the late salmon runs and boasts pristine forests, marshlands and rivers brimming with wildlife.

Glacier Point Wilderness Safari

Alaska

Norwegian Cruise Line's five-hour excursion takes guests on an adventure into the wilderness by boat while cruising North America's deepest and longest fjord, the upper Lynn Canal. You might even see breaching whales and playful sea lions en route to Glacier Point, where you'll disembark at the beach upon arrival. After a drive through the forest and a hike in the woods, you'll have unforgettable, up-close views of the Davidson Glacier by canoe.

Lines that offer this excursion include Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and Silversea Cruises. Holland America Line offers this excursion from Skagway.

Eagle Preserve Rafting Float Adventure

Alaska

Look for bald eagles soaring overhead as you raft down the gentle Chilkat River through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. The waters are overflowing with salmon that come to spawn, serving as food for as many as 400 bald eagles living in the Chilkat Valley. Don't be surprised to see brown bears or 1,600-pound moose coming to feast along the riverbank during your rafting adventure.

Some lines that offer this excursion include Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Lin e. Holland America Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Viking Ocean Cruises host this excursion from Skagway.
