New Album Update from David Gogo

Hey Folks! It’s new album time!! I am very excited about this project. I wrote five new songs and did four covers from artists as diverse as Barbecue Bob, Doug And The Slugs, Bob Dylan and The Beatles! We go from full on givin’ ‘er to all acoustic. Of course, there is plenty of rippin’ guitar throughout! We kept things really simple this time, and I think that it is very effective. Not a lot of bells and whistles, just laying it down. I am joined on most tracks by drummer Pat Steward (Odds, Bryan Adams) and Ben Dwyer on upright and electric bass. Guests are Marisha Devoin on upright bass, Tina Jones on vocals and banjo, and Simon Kendall on keyboards. My friends in Monkeyjunk are also featured together on a track. I look forward to getting out on the road and playing the new material for you. We will also be releasing some videos of me discussing the writing and recording process. 17 Vultures will be officially released on October 19 with an advance track available October 12. We will have CDs available immediately, with vinyl soon to follow. You can click on “shop” on this page to order. I will have copies with me at all my upcoming shows and it will be available on Spotify, Itunes, Apple Music and Googleplay Music. Thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you out there in that land!!

With the release of his fifteenth album 17 Vultures , bluesman David Gogo continues his blues rock crusade by pushing himself forward. Never one to be pigeonholed into a strict blues category, this may be his most diverse release to date. Although initially known for his ability to rip it up on lead guitar with his electric performances, Gogo has also built up a solid reputation over the last decade as an acoustic performer with his solo shows that feature his vintage National steel guitar chops, as well as his entertaining stories from the road. Usually he keeps these two sides of his abilities separate, but he features both on the new album.

Vicksburg Call was recorded in a studio with a live, intimate atmosphere, which yielded an overall grittier sound with lots of feeling. Gogo was affected by the loss of some very influential blues legends and colleagues while creating this album, and the songs explore themes of love and loss, reconciliation, regret, acceptance and hope for new horizons. This is a seriously rockin' blues album.

Come On Down features twelve diverse tunes; six reinvented yet classic covers and six originals inspired by his recent pilgrimage along the "Blues Trail" in Memphis, Mississippi and Alabama. Gogo has invited some seriously talented friends to join him on these songs including Rick May, David Vest, Shawn Hall, Billy Hicks and Tina Jones among others.

Christmas With The Blues is Gogo's first Christmas album and he didn't pull any punches. The album features a number of wonderful guest artists including the one and only David Vest. Living on a Christmas Tree Farm is only one of the reasons Gogo cut this gem. The season belongs to great melodies and wonderful lyrics tinted by a good sense of humour and more than a smidgen of blues. Some say (even Gogo himself) that this is the most bluesy he has ever sounded!

Soul Bender had Gogo back in the studio that produced Skeleton Key and Halfway to Memphis with old friend and fabulous engineer Rick Salt handing the technology, buttons and liquor cabinet. This no compromise recording features a newfound direction for Gogo's voice and a return to the blistering guitar solos that he loves so much. Soul Bender was nominated for Blues Album of the Year at the 2012 JUNO Awards and a SiriusXM INDIES Award. The album won the 2012 Western Canadian Music Award for Blues Recording of the Year.

During the recording process for Different Views , Gogo definitely had some unique sights to inspire his 10 th album. Instead of the usual confines of your typical recording studio, the bulk of the album was once again recorded at his home - overlooking the 160-acre Christmas tree farm and forest that make up the Gogo family compound.

Acoustic , another JUNO-nominated album, was recorded at David's home in between his extensive touring and offers fans an intimate and interesting look at the acoustic side of his talents as Volume 2 of the "Official Bootleg Series." The album features the rich tones of David's 1930 National Steel guitar as well as his 1915 Gibson and a modern day 12-string.

David Gogo's eighth album, entitled Vibe ,  is an all-original affair with a unique blend of songs written with the likes of Tom Wilson, Craig Northey (The Odds/Colin James) and John Capek, who penned the hit Rhythm of My Heart for Rod Stewart. Vibe showcases Gogo's newfound vocal strengths, on songs like I'll Do Anything and 300 Pound Shoes , which on this release, match his profound skill on guitar.

The special " Live At Deer Lake - Official Bootleg " is a live recording of songs mostly found on Skeleton Key and was nominated for a JUNO Award in Canada. The performance took place just outside Vancouver at Deer Lake Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Skeleton Key expanded Gogo's horizons into new and exciting territory. The album featured three singles that were played coast-to-coast on Canadian Rock radio. Halfway to Memphis is Gogo's first studio recording dedicated to the electric blues genre. Dine Under the Stars is a live rockin' blues party while Bare Bones is an acoustic blues tour de force. Change of Pace is a rock blues album that had commercial success at rock radio in Canada when it was released in 2000 through the Top 40 single - Sad & Lonely .

David Gogo Sips from a Silver Cup in New Album

Article contributed by eric alper | published on saturday, october 16, 2021.

david gogo tour 2022

Nanaimo, BC’s multi-award winning and JUNO nominated Canadian artist David Gogo knows the blues, and so does his songwriting, his guitar, and his sharp-witted lyrics that relate as easily as they break your heart. And nowhere is this more apparent than on the roots rocker’s newest album and single of the same name, Silver Cup — available now.

‘All of my life has been the same, and I ain’t never, never gonna change,’ Gogo whiskey-sips over a slide guitar on “Never Gonna Change,” a lead track from his 2021 release, Silver Cup. It’s a set up to an old-fashioned, yarn-spinning story of life from the hard side of the tracks, and the commitment to leaning into what’s created of you.

“I was listening to my vinyl albums, going down rabbit holes on the internet, reading biographies of musicians, and playing my many guitars and just feeling the energy of so much great music,” Gogo says of the album and song’s inspiration.

Serving up his sixteenth full-length album, Gogo knows a thing or two about laying it all on the railroad ties of truth. This album, birthed of a global shutdown pandemic, is a passion project penned acoustically alongside long-time friend and producer, Steve Marriner. Gogo says he utilized the downtime the pandemic provided to delve deep into his heritage; Silver Cup becoming the liner notes of his history.

“The title track was inspired by an antique cup made in the 1800’s that was passed down to me from my 95-year-old grandmother,” Gogo reveals. “The cup once belonged to my Great, Great, Great Uncle James McKay who was a Métis builder of Canada. McKay was originally a trapper and guide, but eventually was involved in the negotiations of Treaties 1 through 5 and held several positions with the newly formed Province of Manitoba, including dealings with Louis Riel.”

How could this incredible Familia legacy not pour its way into the cup of Gogo’s creativity and immensely talented storytelling? “I am very excited about the release of my new album, Silver Cup,” he says. “These have been difficult times for all of us, and the music industry in particular has taken a severe beating. Despite the uncertainties, I felt that the one thing that I could focus on was to stay creative. Having spent my adult life playing on the road, I took the lockdown as an opportunity to woodshed and get back to the roots of what made me the artist that I am today.”

Gogo is a six-time JUNO Award nominated artist and hailed as Guitarist of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards three times. He was named Musician of the Year at the West Coast Music Awards, won Blues Recording of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, and received the Great Canadian Blues Award for his lifetime contribution to the blues in Canada as voted by the listeners of CBC's Saturday Night Blues.

While his own DNA may spur a classic blues tune (or in the case of Silver Cup, 10 blues tunes!), Gogo’s legacy is also one to be written about and praised. This album is cut after cut of authenticity; from trilling honky-tonk piano to Gogo’s, to spoon-slapping harp sung straight outta the boot-stompin’ blues stage, Gogo commits himself to his craft, and his allegiance to the blues. His vocals are laced with grit and grime, purity, and clarity, and the titular track produces captivating acoustic riffs, lyrics oozing truth and relatability — a vibe that causes you to wonder if you just walked into the best kept Western you’d never seen.

“Of course, there are a lot of blues to fill your shoes,” Gogo says. “Steve and I had fun getting the sounds we were looking for out of the vintage acoustic instruments on hand, and we even wrote a couple of songs together.

“I can’t wait for things to get back to normal so I can hit the road with these new songs. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as we enjoyed making it!”

Settle in. Sit back. Set the speakers. Let the needle drop on David Gogo. And sip.

Silver Cup is available now.

Guitar wizard David Gogo on his new debut LP and the undeniable influence of Stevie Ray Vaughan

david gogo tour 2022

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON APRIL 14, 1994

By steve newton.

If there’s a rock ’n’ roll heaven, you know they’ve got a helluva band…and I like to think that there are at least three guitarists in the lineup: Stevie Ray Vaughan , Jimi Hendrix , and Randy Rhoads .

And when I picture Vaughan, I see him doing his famous toe-to-toe, heel-to-heel shuffle over to the edge of a cloud and gazing down with a particularly proud smile, because he’s spotted David Gogo , his former protégé.

The 25-year-old whiz kid from Nanaimo is now setting out on his own recording career, and he’s carrying the blues-rock torch as high as he can lift it. Before the tragic helicopter crash that took Vaughan to that great gig in the sky on August 27, 1990, his personal influence on the young string-bender was immeasurable.

“He came along at the right time,” says Gogo, calling from a Thunder Bay pay phone. “When I was 15 years old and digging the same music I’m digging now, there was no kinda contemporary guitar hero. People were either dead or old or whatever. And then Texas Flood came out, and I freaked! I was tellin’ all my buddies, ‘This guy’s right up there with Hendrix.’

“Shortly afterwards I got to meet him, and every time he came up to Vancouver we’d hang out, which was very nice. Apparently there’s some new book on Stevie some woman in Austin wrote, and there’s a little part in the book—I haven’t seen it yet, but a buddy of mine in Ottawa tells me—where it goes: ‘Stevie realized he was starting to make it on an international level when he played in Victoria, B.C., and a 15-year-old kid showed up dressed like him.’ And of course that was me, so that’s kind of cool.”

Rock-star deaths are a fairly common occurrence, but few have occurred under such tragic circumstances as Vaughan’s. The 36-year-old blues master had recently pulled himself out of a near-fatal cocaine addiction, and his career—thanks to the fine In Step release—was back on track. He’d just finished jamming with the likes of Eric Clapton , Robert Cray , and Buddy Guy when the helicopter he was flying in crashed into a fog-shrouded hillside near southeastern Wisconsin’s Alpine Valley Ski Resort.

Like a lot of folks, Gogo vividly recalls the sad moment when he heard the shocking news.

“My little sister phoned me,” he says, “and you know it’s not a lie then. I went and turned on the radio, and sure enough they were playin’ ‘Texas Flood’ or something. It was really tough. I was just about to start losin’ it, and then I got a call from [Victoria nightclub] Harpo’s and they said, ‘Look, we’re sorry about what happened, but we’ve got Bo Diddley here right now and the guitar player that had been hired couldn’t make it.’

“So I ended up goin’ down and playin’ with Bo that night. We did kind of an opening set with Willie McCalder and a couple of those Powder Blues guys, and we got to play some of Stevie’s stuff. Without being too maudlin, it was nice to be able to play that night, to play it out rather than just sit there and think, ‘Fuck!’ ”

Like Vaughan himself, Gogo began playing the blues when he was just a tyke. He got his first guitar at the age of five, but, unlike Vaughan, he didn’t have a big brother named Jimmie to show him licks.

“I took some lessons from a guy that actually gives accordion lessons,” says Gogo, “then finally when I was around 10 I met a guy in Nanaimo named Glen Foster. I just wanted to get out there and start rippin’, so he basically taught me to improvise, and that was the big trick.”

Unlike his mentor, Gogo didn’t have the thriving Austin, Texas, music scene to inspire him to great heights, but he claims that Nanaimo was a worthy place for a riff-crazy kid to grow up.

“When I was 14 or 15 I played a couple of little teen dances, and I started fronting my own band and playing bars at 16—going to high school at the same time. We really learnt the ropes early—how to deal with an audience, how to put in a full night, the whole nine yards.”

Gogo’s bar band, the Persuaders, was a blues cover band, and while the guitarist’s blazing talents on the fretboard eventually got him signed to Capitol-EMI Records, his lack of original material made recording a moot point. The past three years of his life have seen him concentrate on the craft of songwriting.

“It took a while,” he says. “I had to learn how to write and to find my own sound. It did get frustrating at times, but it was definitely worth the wait.”

Gogo recorded his self-titled debut with producer Rick Parashar of Blind Melon , Pearl Jam , and Soundgarden fame, and the result is 12 consistently strong tracks brimming with Gogo’s virtuosic guitar work and husky, heartfelt vocals. Gogo wrote or cowrote every song but one, including “Deep End”, the disc’s first single and video.

“‘Deep End’ is the toughest song on the record,” he says. “It’s the heaviest track, so it’s definitely not the easiest song for the [Capitol Records] promotion department to push—especially since so much radio nowadays is so lame. But they’ve done a great job. It has been getting played. So if they can do that with that tune, I’m just hopin’ that the other ones are gonna be easier and easier.”

Gogo’s follow-up to “Deep End” is “Movin’ On”, a more straightforward tune that keeps good rockin’ company with such impressive butt-shakers as “Learned the Hard Way”, “The Slip”, and “Crawling Back to You”. Perhaps the most startling tune on the disc is Gogo’s Vaughan-style version of B.B. King’s “It’s My Own Fault”, a totally live, off-the-floor, one-take-wonder of scintillating slow blues in C.

“That song was Number 4 in Toronto recently,” says Gogo with a chuckle. “Isn’t that weird? I couldn’t believe it. We were driving to Toronto and we hear it, and then they go [in a smooth announcer’s voice]: ‘Yeah! And that’s David Gogo with “It’s My Own Fault”—Number 4 on the top 10 at 10.’ And I’m like, ‘Holy shit!’ ”

If more and more radio stations follow suit, the well-earned buzz on Gogo should know no bounds. When his power trio—including former Alannah Myles/Tom Cochrane drummer Jorn Anderson and ex-Persuaders bassist Todd Sacerty—plays the Town Pump next Saturday (April 23), it could be the last time we’ll see him in so small a venue.

But whether Gogo makes it to superstar status or not, you can rest assured that his deep love of the blues—and its most influential practitioners—will live on. He’s not about to downplay his debt to the inspiring guitar greats who’ve lit up his life.

Gogo doesn’t understand why many musicians refuse to acknowledge their influences. “The worst example recently has been the Counting Crows and this guy saying, ‘Oh, I’m really gettin’ sick of this Van Morrison comparison.’ I heard that you’re not even allowed to mention Van Morrison during interviews with that band. The guy’s writing a four-chord jangly pop song that says ‘sha-la-la-la-la’ and he doesn’t want to be compared to Van? Motherfucker should consider himself lucky to be put in the same sentence as Van Morrison as far as I’m concerned.

“You do want to do your own thing—which is why we’re not gonna sit there and be a Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute band. But during the course of the night we might do that Buddy Guy tune Stevie did, ‘Let Me Love You Baby’, as a tip of the hat. I mean, there’s no denying the influence.”

Classic Album Review: David Gogo | Halfway to Memphis

The B.C. blues-rocker knows how to hit that long lunar note … and let it float.

david gogo tour 2022

T his came out in 2001 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

A nybody who covers captain beefheart automatically gets one star from me..

Anybody who does a half-decent job of it — as Nanaimo blues singer-guitarist David Gogo does with his chugging version of the Captain’s intricately syncopated Click Clack — gets two stars. Anybody who makes a habit of covering Beefheart (previously Gogo tackled Crazy Little Thing ) and can also handle tracks by Willie Nelson (a smoky version of Nightlife ) and James Brown (a too-soulful-for-a-white-boy-from-B.C. version of This Is A Man’s World ) along with the likes of Muddy Waters ( Louisiana Blues , Rollin’ and Tumblin’ ) and Howlin’ Wolf ( Commit A Crime, Smokestack Lightnin’ ) gets another star. And for an extra half? Well, as the Captain might say, he knows how to hit that long lunar note … and let it float.

david gogo tour 2022

Nanaimo’s red-hot and rockin’ guitar master David Gogo will help light the fuse to the entire festival weekend and he’ll be doing so in part by playing material from his 2016 Juno-nominated album Vicksburg Call which is his sixth Juno nomination. His first dates all the way back to 1995 when he was nominated for Best New Solo Artist, what a run!

[soliloquy id=”8122″]

Gogo’s warm, rugged, seasoned vocals, and his extraordinary, virtuosic guitar talents are laid bare alongside his emotions on this album – a combination that grabs you from the opening bars and keeps you hooked through all 10 tracks.

Known as a fierce live performer, Gogo leaves it all on stage with every show and his deep well of material will also find him pulling out faves from his Soul Bender and Come On Down albums and feel free to yell out for requests of his takes on Neil Young’s The Loner and the Steve Stills penned Jet Set (Sigh) which are both found on the latest release.

“I doubt there is another blues guitarist around at the moment who can speak through their instrument quite like David Gogo can. This is music that demands attention and respect in an age of disposable pop covers. Modern blues at its best.”? Ken McGrath – Sorted magAZine, Ireland

We can also expect to hear Gogo insert himself into the mix on some acoustic BLUES workshop sessions built around some seriously heavy talent at ROOTS&BLUES 2016.

Calgary International Blues Festival

Veteran Canadian bluesman David Gogo is releasing his 16th full-length album  “Silver Cup” on October 8, 2021 . This acoustic affair was recorded at his home with long time friend Steve Marriner producing and playing on the project. The COVID pandemic and subsequent shutdown of the live music scene gave Gogo time to reflect on his life, heritage and career. The new songs he has written reflect this.

The title track was inspired by an antique cup made in the 1800’s that was passed down to him from his 95 year old grandmother. The cup once belonged to his Great, Great, Great Uncle James McKay who was a Métis builder of Canada. McKay was originally a trapper and guide, but eventually was involved in the negotiations of Treaties 1 through 5 and held several positions with the newly formed Province of Manitoba, including dealings with Louis Riel.

David Gogo has six JUNO Award nominations, has been named Guitarist Of The Year three times at the Maple Blues Awards, was named Musician Of The Year at the West Coast Music Awards, won Blues Recording Of The Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, and received the Great Canadian Blues Award for his lifetime contribution to the blues in Canada as voted by the listeners of CBC’s Saturday Night Blues.

When not touring, David Gogo lives on a Christmas Tree farm on Gogo Mountain, just outside of Nanaimo BC, Canada.
