We don’t usually recommend traveling by ship. But if you’re the kind of traveler who is looking for an unusual adventure every step of your journey, you can choose this option. Although, we’d like to tell you that you’ll have plenty of that on the islands!

• Your travel by ship is a 3 to 4 day long journey. Unfortunately, the ship doesn’t act as a cruise liner, which means you won’t be provided with any entertainment options or exciting meals. Before you choose to take this journey, think of the ship as a strictly commercial choice of travel. 
• The booking process is everything but easy. The lack of convenience can add a little frustration, since you can only make your bookings by physically visiting the Shipping Corporation offices in Calcutta, Chennai, or Vishakhapatnam. There’s no option for you to make these bookings online.

Ross Island is ideally a two part trip, the morning to evening portion includes going around the island looking at the ruins from the era of the British and Japanese rule. the late evening portion includes a spectacular sound, light & video show (yes you read it correctly!!) which has been created specially for Ross island by Revathi (the actress)

This is a over hyped, and not worth the time and money spent to reach here. It used to be called the “Paris of the East” when the British settled here. But everything is destroyed now.

The only good place here is a beach that is on the other side. You will need to climb down and up a lot of steps to get there.

It was a perfect location for family fun, the erstwhile Ross Island has all the history of a mini Paris, albeit at the cost of all Indian labour and is an example of the British opulence over poverty stricken India. Perfect for taking pics and the picturesque light house was delightful. We took the buggy as we were a large family with kids. There are deer and peacocks too.

Andaman Tourism Opens: The Andaman & Nicobar administration has announced that all tourist spots in the South Andaman district will be opened for tourism activities with immediate effect 8 Feb 2022.

What is the advisory to travel to North & Middle Andaman District?

The tourists are allowed to visit Baratang/North & Middle Andaman on production of double dose covid certificate/ All other passengers viz. unvaccinated and partially vaccinated passengers (those who have taken only 1S1 dose of COVID vaccine) shall have to produce RT-PCR negative test report

• All asymptomatic fully vaccinated persons coming to these islands from mainland are  exempted  from the requirement of carrying RT-PCR negative test report,irrespective of the type of vaccine received and country of origin. Such fullyvaccinated individuals shall produce the final vaccination certificate at the origin airport ,  sea port in the mainland and at Port Blair Airport / sea port.
• Alt asymptomatic children below 5 years of age are exempted from carrying RT-PCR negative test report and further RT-PCR testing at Port Blair Airport.
• All other passengers viz. unvaccinated and partially vaccinated passengers (those who have taken only 1S1 dose of COVID vaccine) shall have to produce RT-PCR negative test report to travel to Port Blair from the mainland, as is the practice now. Such an RT-PCR test should have been taken within 48 hours prior to commencement of journey from the origin airport connecting Port Blair. Such passengers will also have to undergo additional RT-PCR test on arrival at Port Blair. Such passengers shall remain in self-quarantine till the arrival of the test report.
• If a passenger on arrival is tested positive then, the prescribed quarantine protocol is to be followed.
• All Airlines shall ensure strict compliance of this order and observance of COVID Appropriate Behaviour. Any non-compliance shall invite action under Disaster Management Act and other applicable laws. 

General Guidelines defined for traveling to Andaman Islands during COVID :

• The Tourism Activities are permitted only in South Andaman & North & Middle Andaman District except Nicobar District.
• Persons above 65 years of age, persons with home co-morbidities, pregnant women and children below the age of 10 years advised not to travel for tourism purposes.
• Tourists/Visitors who are at higher risk due to some medical history are advised to take extra precautions.
• Tourists/visitors shall minimize contact with other staff and visitors as far as possible and zero contact policy should be followed at all tourist destinations.
• All tourists/visitors shall be briefed by the hotel concerned about do’s & don’ts to be mandatorily followed during their stay and movements.
• While travelling tourists/visitors should wear a face mask and carry their own sanitizer and wet wipes for personal use.
• At all tourist destinations, staff must wear face masks and wash/sanitize hands regularly while performing their duties.
• Arogya Setu App shall be mandatory for all incoming tourists/visitors.
• Respiratory etiquettes to be strictly followed. This involves strict practice of covering one’s mouth and nose while coughing/sneezing with a tissue handkerchief/flexed elbow and disposing off used tissues properly after use.
• The tourists/visitors on arrival at Port Blair airport have to undergo mandatory Covid-19 screening with RTPCR test free of cost. Thereafter the tourists/ visitors are allowed to move to their respective hotels. However, they will have to be under quarantine at Port Blair in their hotel rooms until the result of RTPCR tests are received. In case of RTPCR positive test results, the tourists/visitors shall remain in institutional quarantine in hotels notified by the Hoteliers Association in consent with the A&%N Administration, on rate as specified or to the designated hospital/ Covid 19 care centre on case to case basis.

What are the guidelines for testing for tourists coming to Andaman after August 03 2021?

On arrival at Port Blair : 1. The tourists need to carry COVID-19 negative test report from mainland based 1CMR approved lab using Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RTPCR). However, the sample for RTPCR test should have been taken within 48 hours prior to starting the journey from the origin station. (For e.g. if the tourist takes a flight from Delhi at 0600 hrs. on 1st September, 2021, the sample for RTPCR test should have been taken not before 0600 hrs. on 30th August, 2021). 2. The tourists/visitors on arrival at Port Blair airport have to undergo mandatory Covid-19 screening with RTPCR test free of cost. Thereafter the tourists/visitors are allowed to move to their respective hotels. However, they will have to be under quarantine at Port Blair in their hotel rooms until the result of RTPCR tests are received. In case of RTPCR positive test results, the tourists/visitors shall remain in institutional quarantine in hotels notified by the Hoteliers Association in consent with the A&N Administration, on rates as specified or to the designated hospital/ Covid-19 care centre on case-to-case basis.

3. Tourists may also have to undergo random Rapid Antigen Test conducted from time to time on payment basis as prescribed by A8N Administration.

What if the tourists test positive after arriving at the Andaman Islands?

If the tourists tests positive during their stay in the Islands, he/she will need to undergo institutional isolation as per existing health protocols. The cost of such isolation for govt. facility will be paid by the tourists as fixed by the administration from time to time. If the patient wants to stay at hotels, he/she can stay in the hotels if all the conditions below are met: a) Patients are not symptomatic and not more than 60 years old. b) Request/ undertaking is made by patient in writing. c)lf allowed by doctors. Hotels will make necessary arrangements to designate a part of their rooms for institutional isolation for this purpose.

1. Can you elaborate on sea sickness affecting the passengers during the journey?

Usually self-diagnosable, seasickness is associated with fatigue, diseases and vomiting, when the ship is on turbulent water.

The intensity of seasickness varies according to the months in which you are travelling. January, February, March, April and November are months with very little seasickness and hence the best time to

plan a cruise trip. The months with high chances of causing seasickness August and September, and hence you are requested to take necessary precautions for travelling during that time.

2. Are there ATMs in Port Blair and Havelock?

Yes, Port Blair has quite a few ATMs, while Havelock has 2. But since Havelock doesn’t have any banks, you might find cash depletion in the ATMs. You should carry sufficient cash with you for paying the bills during your journey. Credit cards and MasterCards are not accepted widely throughout Andamans, except in large hotels.

3. What do I need to do in case of a medical emergency?

Most Islands do have a primary health centre. The immediate assistance comes from the primary health centre and in case better treatment is needed, there is GB Pant Hospital in Port Blair.

4. Do I need permits for going to the neighbouring island?

You need to get access from the office of the deputy commissioner of Andamans for travelling to the neighbouring islands occupied by the indigenous tribes.

How to Reach Andaman Islands

Things you need to know

1. Reaching Andaman by Flight:

Flight is the best way to reach the Andaman Islands and is preferred by a majority both travelers and locals alike. Although, it is a bit steeper on the pocket, flights are more comfortable , takes less time to reach here and is much safer than seaways.

Most people visit here on a 7-8 Day work leave, focused towards fitting things into schedule and exploring the Islands as much as they can, so faster and reliable transportation is always a better option.

It is important to check if the flight has any halts between them, to keep your travel comfortable. There are several  destinations from where there are no direct flights to Port Blair, in such cases it is recommended to check the flight plans carefully and focus more towards the one with lesser halt timings.

On a lighter note, the view from the flight, especially 5 minutes before landing is wonderful which you'd never want to miss.

We recommend calling-dibs on the window seats.

Flights to the Isles are available from all states, some are direct and some are connecting, Here is some information about the flights from different states in India:

Port Blair Airport:

The Port Blair Airport, officially named as the Veer Savarkar International Airport is the only commercial runway in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and is named after one of the greatest freedom fighter detained and kept at the Cellular Jail.

It is a military cum civilian airport, and therefore taking photographs at or near the airport is not permitted. The terminal is currently in development under the smart city scheme and we will soon be able to see better flight schedules and big aircraft landings.

Soon after arrival, you can leave the airport through the front gate and move straight from the parking lot to find cabs for hire.

Chennai to Port Blair:

Chennai and Port Blair are connected by a total of 65 flights every week. All flights from Chennai are direct and reach Andaman without any halts. Flights are available between 5:05 AM to 12:05 PM

It only takes 2 Hours and 10 minutes to reach the Veer Savarkar International Airport. In-Flight meals are provided by the Airline than can booked prior or after boarding the plane. Connecting flights from other cities to Chennai can be checked by your local travel agent or by visiting the airline website.

​The usual stopover for flights from Delhi is Kolkata and it returns back through the same route, you may or may not disembark from the flight during the halt, ask your hostess for more information.

Andaman Ship Fare:

Shipping fares and overall experience of the journey depends on the type of cabins you choose. Different types of rooms have their own perks including, spacious rooms, clean bathrooms, great food, entertainment, and effect of motion.

Deluxe Cabins:

Deluxe cabins have two separate beds in one room, the cabin is spacious, has bigger windows and is located at the top of the ship. Most of the cabins feature a couch, a table, chairs, long almirah, and a locker to keep everything safe and make sure you have everything you need for a comfortable journey. The bathroom is spacious and clean, and is regularly visited by janitors to keep the room and bathroom tidy.

​The food for the deluxe class passengers is cooked separately and you can sit in a separate restaurant to enjoy the delicacies with a wide view of open sea, through huge glass pane windows.

First Class Cabins:

First class cabins are the next best thing after deluxe; it comes with 2 bunk-beds in one cabin and upto 4 persons are kept in a room. The rooms are located below the deluxe class and have every basic necessity and more including, tables, chairs, almirahs, two windows and a separate clean bathroom. The food for first class passengers is great and

Second Class Cabins:

Second class cabins are very similar to the 1st class and is the most booked type of room in any trip to Port Blair so the tickets sells out quickly.

The room accommodates 6 people at once and has 3 bunk-type beds with a separate bathroom.

​The food for the first is moderately great, and since it is located at the center of the ship, the level of sea sickness is lower.

Bunk Class:

Bunk class is the most affordable way to travel to the Andaman by ship. There are upto 15-25 bunk beds which are placed in open or closed dormitories (huge rooms). The bathroom is common type so you might have to share it other passengers. Beds are provided with a pillow and a small cupboard is placed near the bed to keep your things safe. Bunk class food is average and food-ticket timings are announced via radios kept in every room.

​The great thing about traveling in bunk class is the rate of motion is low and therefore sea-sickness is tiny when compared to other cabin types because the dormitory is located at the bottom half of the ship.

How to Book Tickets:

Booking tickets directly via ship ticket advance reservation system (stars):.

It is a booking guideline implemented to make the ticket booking fair, so the tickets are provided on a first-come-first-serve basis which means you have to make the reservation and plan ahead of time.

​Usually, the ticket bookings are open for public, one month prior to sailing for Port Blair. There is no system to book the tickets online so it can only be reserved by visiting the Port Booking Office personally, at the respective cities.

​ To book tickets, you have to reach Vizag, Kolkata, or Chennai Port, at-least 5 days before the sailing date.

An application form needs to be correctly filled and submitted; For hassle-free process bring the following to the booking office:

• 2 Passport size photos for every individual.
• Photo identity proof.
• Address proof.
• Complete payment amount.

​Passengers are also advised to give details about any infants to the booking officer, no tickets are charged for toddlers below 2 years.

Conclusion: Flight vs Ship Journey to Andaman.

Ships are a rare experience and present some of the very beautiful and diverse in and off cabin experience, the pricing is pretty low when compared to flights, and the amount of luggage you can bring is much more than an aeroplane.

​But, ships are only suitable for you if you are visiting Andaman on a long vacation and need to experience ship journey once in your like or don't want to spend too much in transportation costs.

It’s full steam ahead for the cruise ship industry after Royal Caribbean hiked its full-year profit guidance on Thursday, saying it expects 60% growth from last year following record bookings during the first quarter.

Travelers are paying “record ticket prices,” according to Royal Caribbean — despite a recent spate of high-sea deaths and missing passengers reports, including a Florida 20-year-old who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise this month.

Soaring demand for vacations at sea has given cruise operators ample room to raise ticket prices as the industry looks to close the pricing gap between more expensive land-based holidays and give their profits a lift.

Royal Caribbean, which operates the Celebrity Cruises, now expects annual profits of between $10.70 and $10.90 per share, compared with its earlier forecast of $9.90 to $10.10.

“Our existing fleet along with our new ships continue to perform exceptionally well, highlighted by the market response to the launch of Icon of the Seas,” CEO Jason Liberty said.

Royal Caribbean’s shares — which have spiked 126% in the past year, were up 2% on Thursday morning, to $139.32.

“I remember owning the stock in 2022 and every client was giving me grief about it,” said Peter Ahluwalia, manager at Belinvest Global Equity Fund that holds Royal Caribbean stocks and chief investment officer at Swiss Partners Group. “We’re turning almost 45% return on equity at the moment, which is quite incredible.”

Overall, the industry which was among the hardest hit during the pandemic, is expected to grow to 39.4 million passengers in 2027 from 31.7 million last year, according to Statista.

The surge in demand comes amid major publicity blows from incidents at sea involving passengers who have gone missing, including the Florida man who jumped overboard on April 4 in front of his brother and father after a night of drinking.

Last December, a 41-year-old Royal Caribbean passenger went overboard on a cruise to the Bahamas. That followed an incident last August involving a 64 year-old woman sailing from Singapore to Malaysia on Royal Caribbean who is presumed to have jumped to her death .

On average, 19 people go overboard on cruise ships every year — and of those, only about four are rescued, according to a 2020 study commissioned by the industry trade group Cruise Lines International Association.

Royal Caribbean profits soar as travelers pay 'record ticket prices' - in wake of teenager Levion Parker jumping overboard

Cruise operator Royal Caribbean has the wind in its sails.

The company said this week that soaring demand for vacations at sea has enabled it to sell tickets at record prices - doubling growth to its earnings.

It comes just weeks after a 20-year-old went missing after jumping overboard from one of its ships between Grand Inagua Island and Cuba .

Royal Caribbean Group's net income for the first quarter was $360 million compared to a loss of $48 million for the same period last year.

'Wow, what a great start to the year,' said CEO Jason Liberty on announcing the results this week. 'What transpired over the past three months was even better than our already elevated expectations.'

In light of the surge in ticket sales, Royal Caribbean lifted its annual profit forecast for a second time.

'Things just continue to accelerate and the thirst or hunger for our brands,' Liberty said during a post-earnings call.

Its success also comes even though the quarter aligns with the 'wave season' - the period after the new year which generally sees reduced demand and requires operators to slash prices to make sales.

In April, the company, which also operates Celebrity Cruises, with slightly more upmarket albeit smaller ships, experienced record bookings from 'both a volume and pricing standpoint.'

The operator carried just over 2 million passengers in the first quarter, nearly 14 percent higher year-over-year.

And not only that, Liberty noted that customers are spending more while they are on cruises and booking cruises even further in advance. 

Higher ticket prices have helped protect the company from slightly steeper net cruise costs expected this year due to increased dry dock days - during which ships will be taken out of the water for maintenance.

Canceled trips to the Red Sea due to ongoing conflict have also impacted earnings.

It has also faced slightly steeper fuel costs - spending $304 million over the three months as opposed to $302 million during the wave season quarter last year.

The company expects net cruise costs excluding fuel to increase about 5.5 percent for the year, up from its earlier forecast of around 4 percent.

Royal Caribbean's share price was flirting with an all-time high on Friday - trading at around $140 and up more than 16 percent this year.

'I remember owning the stock in 2022 and every client was giving me grief about it,' Peter Ahluwalia, manager at Belinvest Global Equity Fund and chief investment officer at Swiss Partners Group, told Reuters.

'We're turning almost 45 percent return on equity at the moment, which is quite incredible,' he added.
