August 2021 - Volkswagen Polo Petrol Variants Explained - Which One To Buy?

  • 23 August 2021
  • By Lakshya Khanna

The V3Cars reviews all the variants of the 2021 Volkswagen Polo version to give you a better idea about which variant offers the best value for money. The Polo is available with a 1.0-litre normal petrol and a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. While the normal petrol engine is paired with only manual transmission, the turbo-petrol engine has an option of both manual and automatic transmissions.

Volkswagen Polo

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Volkswagen Polo Petrol?

The pros or advantages of Polo petrol are:

  • Fantastic torque output of the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine makes it easily drivable in the city and relaxing on the highways
  • Only a small premium for turbo petrol in the Comfortline variant
  • A decent number of features like auto AC, cruise control, touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, auto wipers, auto headlamps, auto-dimming inside mirror, power mirrors, front armrest, etc.
  • Straight lines and a clean, understated styling ages well and looks acceptable even after being around for a decade
  • Mature and neutral manners on the highway and in the city
  • Long front centre armrest is very practical - unlike rivals which offer small armrest - just long enough to use it as an elbow rest

The Volkswagen Polo petrol has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • Underpowered 1.0-litre normal petrol engine. Its torque-to-weight ratio of around 92-93Nm/tonne is similar to that of the Alto 800 and Aura CNG.
  • Turbo petrol option is not available in the base variant.
  • No rear parking camera - although it’s an easy and cheap aftermarket upgrade.
  • Other missing features are - projector/LED headlamps, keyless entry with push-button start/stop, split-folding rear seatback.
  • Cramped rear-seat legroom. It’s a rare car in which two 6-footers can’t sit behind each other.
  • Surprisingly, the Polo GT doesn’t get front centre armrest and rear AC vents.

Volkswagen Polo Petrol - Latest August 2021 Prices

The  Volkswagen Polo  is available in 4 variants with a starting price of Rs. 6.17 lakh for the Trendline variant. The base variant is only available with a 1.0-litre normal petrol engine while the mid-spec Comfortline trim also gets the option of 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine with a manual and as well as a 6-speed automatic. Comfortline turbo costs Rs. 7.41 lakh while the non-turbo saves you Rs. 30,000 and costs Rs. 7.11 lakh. For the automatic, you’ll pay another Rs. 1.1 lakh.

The Highline variant is only available with the turbo petrol engine and it costs Rs. 8.49 lakh with the manual and Rs. 9.6 lakh with the automatic. The top-spec GT variant is only available with the automatic and costs Rs. 10.0 lakh.

Volkswagen Polo Trendline Petrol - Base Variant Features And Review

The Polo’s base Trendline variant costs Rs. 6.17 lakh. It is available with only the 1.0-litre normal petrol engine and a manual transmission. For the metallic paint job, you’ll have to pay another Rs. 10,000.

The Polo Trendline base variant has lots of missing must-have features, such as rear power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs, remote central locking and a music system with steering-mounted controls. For this reason, we cannot recommend the Trendline variant.

Volkswagen Polo Trendline vs Comfortline Variant - Price and Features Comparison

The Polo Comfortline variant is almost Rs. 1.0 lakh more expensive than the Trendline. However, if you choose to upgrade to the turbo petrol engine, then, that will add only another Rs. 30,000. Compared to the underpowered 1.0-litre normal petrol engine, this is a significant upgrade and worth the additional premium. Metallic shades will cost you another Rs. 10,000.

The Comfortline variant comes with several essential features such as a rear defogger, rear wiper, speed sensing auto door lock, cooled & illuminated glovebox, parcel tray, electrically adjustable ORVMs, fog lamps, audio system, rear power windows and remote central locking. It also gets ambient lighting and 15-inch alloy wheels.

This variant gets a good number of features and is worth buying for budget buyers. We strongly recommend buying at least the Comfortline variant with the turbo petrol engine as it’s very attractively priced. The turbo petrol engine’s higher torque output will make your highway and city drive a lot more relaxed without compromising on fuel efficiency.

The Comfortline turbo is also available with a 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission for an additional Rs. 1.1 lakh. This asking price is also acceptable for the torque converter automatic. The only notable feature missing in the Comfortline trim is the steering-mounted controls. Otherwise, it appears reasonably loaded.

Volkswagen Polo Comfortline vs Highline Plus Variant - Price and Features Comparison

The Polo Highline Plus variant costs Rs. 8.49 lakh with the manual and Rs. 9.6 lakh with the automatic. The Polo Highline Plus petrol is Rs. 1.1 lakh more expensive than the Polo Comfortline.

The Highline Plus variant mostly adds good-to-have features to make the package more alluring. Some of its key additional features include 16-inch alloy wheels, auto-dimming IRVM, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and steering-mounted controls, leather-wrapped steering wheel, front armrest, auto AC with rear AC vents, power-foldable ORVMs, cruise control and auto wipers.

The upgrade from the Comfortline turbo to Highline Plus turbo is almost justified. But, most of the additional features are good-to-have. If you wish to have these features, then the VW Polo Highline Plus is worth buying over the lower variants.

Volkswagen Polo Highline Plus vs GT TSI Variant - Price and Features Comparison

The top-of-the-line Polo GT TSI variant is only available with an automatic transmission option, and costs Rs. 40,000 more than the Highline Plus automatic. The GT TSI variant comes primarily with cosmetic features like black ORVMs, black rear roof spoiler, black interior but with an added black rear spoiler and black ORVMs. Surprisingly, this variant doesn’t get rear AC vents, front centre armrest and rear 12v power socket. Keeping that in mind, the Highline Plus variant becomes a little difficult to recommend. Buy the GT variant only if you like styling elements and don’t mind the missing features.

Which Variant Of The Volkswagen Polo Petrol Should You Buy In August 2021?

Now let’s sum it all up. The base variant only gets the normal petrol engine and barely enough features for the asking price. Skip this one and consider at least the Comfortline trim with the turbo petrol engine. The non-turbo engine will feel underpowered outside the city limits and the turbo isn’t all that expensive.

If you want some more creature comforts, then you can go with the Highline Plus, although it doesn’t offer as much value as the Comfortline.

With the automatic transmission, again, the Comfortline turbo is our top recommendation. The Highline Plus automatic is worth upgrading for the additional features even though it’s not a total VFM package.

The GT variant adds some cosmetic features to the feature list but takes away the front centre armrest and rear AC vents in exchange. We do not recommend buying the Polo GT petrol.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Volkswagen Polo Petrol?

The Polo’s 1.0-litre normal petrol engine makes only 76PS of maximum power and 95Nm of peak torque. In this segment, this engine is the least powerful and has a torque-to-weight ratio of less than 100Nm per tonne. This engine offers a claimed fuel efficiency of 17.74kmpl, which is just better than what the Jazz offers.

On the other hand, the Polo’s 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine makes a healthy 110PS of power and 175Nm of class-leading torque. We strongly suggest buying the Polo with this engine as it doesn’t cost a lot but offers way better torque and performance without compromising on the fuel efficiency. The Polo turbo petrol is also available with a 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

What Are The Volkswagen Polo Exterior Colour Options?

The Volkswagen Polo is available in 7 exterior colour options:

Please note if you want the Trendline or Comfortline variants of the Polo in metallic shades like silver, grey and dark red, then they’ll add another Rs. 10,000 to the ex-showroom cost.

Three equipment lines, one special model and five specialists: new exclusive model "Fresh" for the market launch of the new Polo

Volkswagen CrossPolo

The "Trendline," "Comfortline" and "Highline" equipment lines have been substantially upgraded CrossPolo, BlueGT, GTI and BlueMotion (TSI and TDI) as independent models

As in the previous model, Volkswagen is once again offering three equipment levels in the 2014 model year Polo: "Trendline", "Comfortline" and "Highline"; the standard equipment of all three lines has been significantly improved. In addition, the exclusive Polo Fresh will be on offer with the launch of the new model range. Likewise, already on the market: the new CrossPolo. Over the course of this year, Volkswagen will complement the model range by the new Polo BlueGT, Polo GTI and Polo TDI BlueMotion as well as a Polo TSI BlueMotion.

Polo Fresh – the special model for the market launch

Customised exterior. As in the debuts of the up! and Beetle, Volkswagen is offering an exclusively equipped model for the European market launch of the Polo: the "Fresh". Highlights: a two-tone, strikingly classy interior. This special model, delivered with 16-inch wheels in new "Portago" design (in exclusive "High Gloss Steel" colour), and preferably painted in "Cornflower Blue", is visually differentiated by black painted door mirror covers, LED licence plate illumination, high-gloss black radiator grille screen, standard fog lights, tinted rear windows (from B pillar back), rear lights that are also tinted and "Fresh" badges on the front wings. Offered as alternatives to "Cornflower Blue", which is known as the "communication body colour", are "Pure White", "Reflex Silver", "Oryx White" and "Deep Black".

Customised interior. The Polo Fresh also lives up to its name inside, because it was designed in two tones. The light surfaces in "Ceramique" for the door inserts and bottom part of the dashboard including the glove department create an especially exclusive impression. The centre seat panels are also designed in "Ceramique", while the sections in "Dark Palladium" make for a striking contrast. These include door panels, the upper part of the dashboard, the centre console with a panel in contrasting "Dark Rhodium Fine", side components and add-on parts of the sports seats, the centre arm rest and the lower parts of the A and B pillars. As an alternative, the centre seat panels may be configured in "Dark Palladium". The black leather and its bright contrasting stitching ("Ceramique") that trims the steering wheel, hand brake grip and gear shift lever is also sophisticated. The exclusive interior is perfected by pedals in aluminium look, carpet floor mats with coloured edging, white LED ambience lighting in the area of the centre console and colour-coordinated footwell illumination.

Polo Trendline in detail

Attractive base model. Buyers will now get even more added value, especially in the base version. Take Germany, for example, where standard features of the Polo Trendline now include 15-inch instead of 14-inch wheels, a split rear bench including dual cargo floor, new electromechanical steering, remote control for central locking, multifunction display and tyre pressure monitoring system.

Not a trace of basic. In its interior, the entry-level model is characterised by various applications in elegant black as well as new seat materials in the "Grip" design. And of course, the Polo Trendline is also given extensive safety and comfort equipment. For example, active safety: in addition to the ABS, the ESC electronic stabilisation programme, including hill start assistant, is standard on board, among other things. For example, passive safety: in addition to the front airbags and combined head-thorax airbags (passenger front airbag can be deactivated), the Polo comes with five headrests, five three-point belts (height-adjustable in the front), belt tensioners and belt force limiters in the front as well as Isofix fittings for child seats (on the outside of the rear seats). The front head rests have been designed in such a way that they counteract whiplash. Consider its comfort: standard equipment in this line includes, among other things, electric windows, central locking with wireless remote control, asymmetrically split and folding rear seats and rear seat backrests, double cargo floor, multifunction display and tyre pressure monitor indicator, cargo area cover, warning buzzer for lights left on, height-adjustable driver's seat, make-up mirrors in the sun shades and green-tinted heat protection glazing.

Polo Comfortline in detail

Sophisticated centre. The Polo Comfortline features were extended by 15-inch "Tosa" alloy wheels (previously 15-inch steel wheels), ParkPilot in front, the "Composition Touch" radio system and the "PLUS" multifunction display. Beyond that, the "Comfortline" equipment line reveals its identity on the exterior by a chrome trim around the air inlet, wing mirror housings and door handles painted in body colour as well as newly designed H7 twin headlights. In terms of comfort, features such as a semi-automatic air conditioning system ("Climatic"), electrically adjustable and heated wing mirrors, passenger's seat that is likewise height-adjustable, sliding drawers under the front seats, various trims in aluminium look (instruments, air nozzles, light turn switch, radio and climate controls) and storage pockets on the backs of the front seats complement the standard equipment. The driver and passengers are travelling on elegant materials in the "Rail" design.

Polo Highline in detail

High-end Polo. The Polo Highline is equipped with 16-inch "Portago" alloy wheels (previously 15 inch) and the new driver alert system as standard. On the exterior, the classiest of all Polo cars distinguishes itself also by standard fog lights and high-gloss black trim in the air inlet screen from the "Comfortline" equipment line. Interior details such as a three-spoke leather steering wheel (lower part of centre spoke in chrome), centre armrest in the front, height-adjustable sports seats in the front, parking brake lever and shift lever grip in leather as well as the elegant seat design in "Cell" material lend the "Highline" model a particular sophisticated flair.

The new CrossPolo in detail

Designed for the urban environment. An underbody protection panel, offset in silver, on the front and rear bumpers as well as black covers on the wheel arches, sills and doors give the upgraded CrossPolo once more an independent off-road character. The door mirror housings that are also painted in silver, regardless of the car colour, and the matching silver anodised roof rails, make for an extra portion of sportiness. In addition, two new metallic colours ("Honey Orange" and "Titanium Beige") as well as newly styled 17-inch "Canyon" alloy wheels complete the range of equipment features from now on. Classy: the smoked tail lights that have been newly designed here as well.

All inclusive. In addition, exclusive fabrics, designed especially for this Polo, enhance the value of the CrossPolo, which is equipped with sport seats, H7 headlights (optionally: bi-xenon) and fog lights as standard. The newly designed steering wheel as well as the gear and parking brake lever are covered with leather; contrasting colour seams increase the high-value ambience in the interior that has a two-colour scheme as does the new instrument cluster in "tubes" look and applications in matt chrome. The CrossPolo can be ordered with three petrol and three diesel engines, which cover a power range from 55 kW / 75 PS to 81 kW / 110 PS. In Germany, there are currently two petrol cars and two diesel cars for the market launch, since the performance range begins at 66 kW / 90 PS there.

New TDI and TSI Polo BlueMotion in detail

Low air and rolling resistance. Whether TDI or TSI – with the Polo BlueMotion, efficiency takes centre stage. Nonetheless, both avant-garde models also satisfy the requirements of comfort since a minimum consumption is by no means gained at the expense of comfort. On efficiency: air drag is reduced in the BlueMotion versions by the modified underbody, burnished radiator grille insert and the aerodynamically perfected front spoiler. Tyres optimised for low rolling resistance also contribute to the cutting-edge fuel-consumption values. Comfort or avant-garde: the paint job in "Clearwater Blue Metallic," exclusively mixed for these models, is one of the features that emphasise the sustainable talents of the Polo TSI BlueMotion and TDI BlueMotion. The 15-inch "Buenos Aires" alloy wheel is also exclusively reserved for the two Polo BlueMotion models. Individualistic seat covers, chrome adornments and leather-covered steering wheel, gear lever and parking brake lever make for a markedly high-value ambience in the interior of the BlueMotion as well.

New Polo BlueGT in detail

Body is 15 mm lower. The Polo BlueGT – the first model in both the range and brand with selective cylinder shut-off – has its own distinctive exterior as well as interior features. On its exterior, the BlueGT includes ex-factory newly designed and smoked tail lights, 17-inch aluminium wheels, a roof spoiler, side sills, familiar independent bumpers and 15 mm lower ride height. The interior has been upgraded by details such as the expanded content of the multifunction display (ACT indication) and front sport seats.

Optional features

Strong presence. Not only the standard equipment but also the range of optional features has been expanded – beyond new comfort, infotainment and assistance systems. Electrically folding wing mirrors, automatic running light activation and a rear view camera are new in the programme. As in the previous model, the new Polo will also be offered with a large panoramic tilt/slide sunroof. Volkswagen R GmbH has conceived a new exterior and interior package for the Polo Comfortline and Polo Highline as part of the R-Line programme. In addition, various R-Line alloy wheels, 16-inch or 17-inch, will again be available. Polo R-Line packages in detail:

R-Line exterior. The R-Line packages were newly put together. Example, the exterior: the designers have developed a new, high-gloss radiator grille with R-Line logo for the Polo; the bottom air inlet screen, which is, like the radiator grille, painted in a high-gloss black, was also redesigned. The "Salvador" alloy wheel is also a new feature that completes the exterior package. More details of the exterior package include bumpers in the R-Line design (with integrated fog lights in the front, including cornering light), wider side sills, an R-Line diffuser in the rear, a customised roof spoiler and chrome-plated end pipe trims (if visible, depending on the engine).

R-Line interior. The interior package has been modified even more substantially. Volkswagen R GmbH has newly created the sport seats in R-Line cover in the "Race/San Remo" design (optionally "Leather/Alcantara") with R-Line logo, the newly designed multifunction sport steering wheel, "small leather package" (gear lever and parking brake lever) and floor mats. Contrasting seams in "Crystal Grey" are used with all these features. The black roofliner, the black trims or frames in the area of the centre console and the air vents, the R-Line door sill plates and the stainless-steel pedal caps have been retained.

The specified fuel consumption and emission data are determined in accordance with the measurement procedures prescribed by law. 1 January 2022, the WLTP test cycle completely replaced the NEDC test cycle and therefore no NEDC values are available for new type approved vehicles after that date.

This information does not refer to a single vehicle and is not part of the offer but is only intended for comparison between different types of vehicles. Additional equipment and accessories (additional components, tyre formats, etc.) can alter relevant vehicle parameters such as weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics, affecting the vehicle's fuel consumption, power consumption, CO 2 emissions and driving performance values in addition to weather and traffic conditions and individual driving behavior.

Due to more realistic testing conditions, fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions measured according to WLTP will in many cases be higher than the values measured according to NEDC. As a result, the taxation of vehicles may change accordingly as of 1 September 2018. For further information on the differences between WLTP and NEDC, please visit www.volkswagen.de/wltp .

Further information on official fuel consumption data and official specific CO 2 emissions for new passenger cars can be found in the "Guide to fuel economy, CO 2 emissions and power consumption for new passenger car models", which is available free of charge from all sales dealerships and from DAT Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH, Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, D-73760 Ostfildern, Germany and at www.dat.de/co2 .

ROAD TEST: Volkswagen Polo 1,0 TSI 85 kW Highline DSG

cruise control in polo highline

The range-topping Polo Highline derivative proves Volkswagen’s celebrated small hatch isn’t quite perfect…

It’s often the case that, even before you drive a vehicle, you have a fairly good idea of how the road test will turn out. This may be based on a colleague’s feedback from said vehicle’s international launch a few months prior, or it could be because we’ve already sampled another derivative in an earlier test. Both instances apply in this case.

However, life, as they say, is full of little surprises.

We’ll get to that, but first a recap on what we know. This, of course, is the latest-generation Volkswagen Polo, a car which, in 1,0 TSI Comfortline manual guise, we evaluated in a first drive at the start of 2018. That 70 kW derivative received a resounding thumbs-up from the CAR team, scoring 82/100 in the magazine test (February 2018) and garnering praise for its refined ride, excellent fit and finish, class-leading interior design and infotainment tech, and frugal habits. Basically, it’s a vehicle that, rather than exhibiting a generational leap, has seen marginal gains over its predecessor in just about every area. It’s now more of a mini-Golf than ever and surely that can only be a good thing.

Until the arrival of the 2,0-litre GTI model, the subject of this test is the current range-topper, the 1,0 TSI Highline. Whereas all models in the current Polo range share VW’s 999 cm 3 turbopetrol engine, the version in the two Highline derivatives is tuned to deliver an extra 15 kW and 25 N.m. This more powerful engine is – like the 70 kW DSG – mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Externally, there’s little to distinguish this top-spec Polo other than the 16-inch “Las Minas” alloys. That said, look carefully at the rear wheels and you will notice disc brakes, as opposed to the drums on the lesser models.

Apart from the engine upgrade, it’s inside where the Highline’s superior status is apparent, with some extra spec over the Comfortline model. This includes cloth-trimmed “sport seats” (Art Veloru leather trim is an option) and a front centre armrest with storage box and cupholder at the rear. Highline also gets you an upgraded Composition Media infotainment system with a bigger eight-inch display (as opposed to 6,5 inches), app connect functionality and voice control. Ambient interior lighting is standard, as is cruise control with a speed limiter.

Our test unit also came equipped with blind-spot assist, parallel-park assist, a rear-view camera, park assist with PDC, and Climatronic air-con – all options adding round R25 000 to the sticker price – as well as the metallic Energetic Orange paint (R950).

Finally, then, to the drivetrain and essentially the crux of this test … and the little surprise alluded to earlier.

Any three-cylinder engine is going to draw immediate comparisons to Ford’s benchmark 1,0 EcoBoost. A multiple World Engine of the Year winner, the Ford’s punchy little unit has set the standards for refinement and efficiency. As noted in our test of the Polo 1,0 TSI Comfortline’s 70 kW version, VW’s unit isn’t quite as smooth and, now mated to the DSG ‘box, this characteristic has only been amplified.

At a normal application of throttle input, the transmission selects the next ratio at between 1 500 and 1 800 r/min. For this three-cylinder unit, those are revs that, to the ear, instinctively sound too low and the engine appears to labour. It gives the drivetrain a rough quality and is likely a calibration chosen for better fuel consumption, but unfortunately at the expense of driveability. Regardless, it was an attribute immediately picked by all in the CAR team and highlighted on our test-feedback sheets. All preferred the previous, smoother 1,2-litre turbopetrol.

The Highline does come with a sport drive mode you can access via a button next to the gear selector offering eco, normal, sport and individual modes; these alter steering weighting (marginally) and throttle/transmission mapping. Sport mode for the throttle/transmission can also be accessed by pulling the selector itself down one notch further. Sport mode does allow the DSG ‘box to hold onto a ratio for a little longer and it was the preferred setting for all who tested the car.

However, plant your foot and our performance testing indicated it makes no difference what mode you’re in; in-gear acceleration times to 140 km/h in sport and normal were identical. To put it into context, this 85 kW 1,0-litre Polo was just under a second quicker to 100 km/h than its 70 kW manual sibling (11,05 versus 11,88 seconds), and 2,5 seconds brisker to 140 km/h (22,06 versus 24,56 seconds).

Helped by its rear disc brakes, the Highline’s 100-0 km/h time is an impressive 2,79 seconds, taking an average distance of  just 37,44 metres to come to a halt. However, there were a few testers’ notes that highlighted the brakes as being   overly sensitive.

2020 Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI review, test drive

Does the BS6 Polo with the 110hp, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and 6-speed manual gearbox make for a fun-to-drive hatchback? We find out.

2020 Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI review, test drive

What is it?

First launched in India in 2010, the Volkswagen Polo is more than a generation old, but it has been in a constant state of evolution. Over the years, it has been powered by no less than eight different engines. However, it’s the 2020 Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI that gets the most accomplished engine yet.

An International Engine of the Year award winner, the 999cc direct-injection TSI petrol is both densely packed with technology and finely engineered to deftly balance the conflicting requirements of both power and fuel economy. So how does it stack up on paper?

cruise control in polo highline

Compared to the previous 1.2 TSI rated at 105hp, the new 1.0 makes 110hp. And despite its smaller capacity, it makes an identical 175nm of torque, albeit from a  slightly higher 1,750rpm (vs 1,500rpm for the 1.2 TSI). The 1.0 TSI also has a cylinder less and, hence, a more apples-to-apples comparison is with Hyundai’s 1.0 -litre, three-cylinder TGDI motor which develops 100hp and 172Nm of torque.

What is significant is that the new 2020 Polo 1.0 TSI gets a 6-speed manual gearbox for the first time, to strengthen driver appeal. What is missing though - apart from a diesel option - is VW's quick-shifting 7-speed DSG or twin-clutch automatic. In its place, the new Polo GT will get (it isn't in showrooms yet) a conventional torque converter-equipped 6-speed auto.

cruise control in polo highline

Apart from the engine, little has changed on the 2020 Polo. VW's baby was given a facelift recently, and despite its age, it doesn’t look dated. The perfectly proportioned shape is timeless and still exudes that solid Teutonic feel. The crisp details still elicit long appreciative looks, and what adds to the appeal is the new GTI-like nose. There's also an extra bit of cladding that stretches along the running board and around to the rear, merging with what looks like faux diffuser.

What's it like to drive?

Let's start with performance, which by any yardstick is very strong. The tug from 3,000rpm to around 6,000rpm delivers a strong push in the small of your back, and shift up a gear and there’s not much of a let-up in performance. Acceleration is so strong, the 1.0-litre does the 0-100kph sprint in just 9.97sec, making it one of the fastest hatchbacks around. Only Fiat's Abarth Punto was quicker but with most of the hot hatches discontinued, the Polo 1.0 TSI stands unchallenged.  The regular 1.2 Swift comes closest but it's a still a full two seconds slower in the race to 100kph, and that's despite its massive 190 kg weight advantage. Also, find the right road and the 1.0 TSI will hit a maximum speed of 192kph - gives you an idea of just how much grunt there is in the motor.

The 1.0 TSI is also a full second faster to 100kph compared to the outgoing DSG- automatic-equipped 1.2, and by the time you get to 160kph, the gap to the 1.2 is more than 6sec! Competition for the Polo 1.0 TSI is more likely to come from Hyundai's new Grand i10 Nios, which gets a 100hp turbo-petrol as well. To give some reference, the Venue powered with the same engine and a 6-speed gearbox does the dash to 100kph in 11.24sec.

The 1.0 TSI also pulls cleanly from low engine speeds, making it light and easy to drive in traffic. Get off the clutch, even from as low as 1,100rpm in any gear, and there isn't too much judder or hesitation - the Polo gets going smoothly. Acceleration, however, is a bit flat and power doesn't come in strong until you pass 2,500rpm. So in-gear acceleration isn't very strong, with 20-80kph in third taking 12.3sec and 40-100kph in fourth taking 14.7sec. To illustrate, the discontinued Baleno RS that also had a 1.0 turbo, did the same in 9.48sec and 12.53sec.

Rowing through the gearbox to keep the engine on the boil adds tremendously to the driving experience and the well-chosen gear ratios squeeze the most out of this compact engine. The 6-speed gearbox, however, is not one of VW's best units; it takes a bit of effort to slot the well-finished knob through the gate, and on occasion feels a bit notchy.

Lopping off one cylinder has also compromised refinement to some extent and the discordant beat of the three-cylinder engine is noticeable. Idle is a bit lumpy and you can feel a few pulses coming through the clutch The lack of a balancer shaft means it certainly isn't as smooth as Ford's 1.5 three-cylinder Dragon - which is still the benchmark for refinement - and 1.2 TSI owners will clearly miss the silky smooth responses and seamless punch of the bigger four-cylinder unit.

However, where the Polo 1.0 TSI's hits it out of the park, again, is around corners. Yes, the steering is light, but it is also direct, slack-free and it weights up nicely as you go faster. The new Polo also enters corners with a lot more confidence. It effortlessly carries speed into corners, the turn-in is sharp, body control is decent on its stiff springs, and the big wheels and grippy tyres really allow you to keep cornering speeds up. Use the strong mid-range of the engine to fly out of corners and you are guaranteed a big smile.

It even rides well. There is a hint of stiffness in the springs and that keeps you aware of medium-sized bumps, but the suspension manages to round-off sharp edges quite nicely, and unlike earlier, large craters aren't much of a problem either. Even the ground clearance is generous.

Keen drivers will really enjoy the well-rounded performance of the new Polo 1.0 TSI, which really comes together as a great driver's car. In fact, for sheer driving pleasure, you won’t get anything more entertaining for the money.

cruise control in polo highline

With its smaller capacity engine and manual gearbox, the VW Polo 1.0 TSI is also more efficient. The official figure stands at 18.24kpl, which means a real-world figure of between 11 and 12 on our city cycle.

What's it like inside?

It's no surprise that the 2020 Polo is very familiar on the inside. The cabin, in fact, feels like it has been carried over unaltered, with only a few important features added. Purists will love the functional, solid and uncluttered design which, like the exterior, has stood the test of time.

cruise control in polo highline

The 6.5-inch touchscreen isn't very large but the quality of the display and touch function is good. In fact, using the system is quite seamless, and Apple CarPlay works particularly well with it. Bigger isn't always better.

Those who love driving will appreciate the very sporty and clear instrument panel with its white-on-black numbering and the monotone central display. And then there's the leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel, a tactile experience in itself.

cruise control in polo highline

Also something you can't quite ignore is the Polo's solid build. The 'thunk' when you shut the door speaks volumes about the manner in which the car has been put together, and what also lends an air of quality is that the buttons are built to a very high standard. In fact, quality levels are so good, the bits used on the inside could easily pass muster on a car or an SUV that's twice the price of the Polo . . . and they often do.

The grey-on-black themed cabin with the gunmetal grey inset, however, looks dull. Volkswagen has used chrome highlights and 'piping' sparingly, and with the seats finished in black as well, the cabin clearly could have done with some brightening up.

That aside, the driving position is excellent. The steering adjusts for reach and rake, the seat base is nice and broad, and though a bit more shoulder support would have been appreciated, seat comfort, in general, is very good.

cruise control in polo highline

Ever since the Polo was launched, rear-seat space hasn’t been its strongest point, and that fact has been further accentuated with the arrival of competition with more spacious back seats. However, that said, the Polo's rear seat isn’t a bad place to be, especially if you aren’t very tall. Thigh support is good, the cushioning is just right and the backrest is nicely reclined. You do miss a central elbow rest, and though there are air-con vents, there are no USB slots; only a 12-volt socket is present.

The boot is nice and wide, and at 280 litres, it is decently sized too. Those looking for additional cargo space can flip the rear seat down.

When it comes to kit, VW has deleted some essential items. There's no rear parking camera, no ESP (stability control) and no LEDs. And, unlike the Hyundai Nios 1.0 turbo, there is no wireless charging either. What you do get on the 2020 Polo Highline Plus are stuff like a cooled glovebox, cruise control, voice commands, and one-touch power windows.

Should you buy one?

If you're looking for space, comfort and practicality, the new 2020 Polo 1.0 TSI isn't the hatchback for you. However, shift your gaze to the driver's seat (which is where most owners in this class sit), and the 2020 Polo suddenly emerges as a front runner. Yes, the engine needs to be worked to get the most out of it, it isn't quite as smooth as a four-cylinder, and some important kit has been deleted. Still, if you are looking at enjoying your time behind the wheel, the gracefully ageing Polo with a new heart is a compelling package.

Outright performance is what sets this car apart, and right now there is no other quicker mainstream hatch. It’s stable at speed, loves to tackle corners, and goads you to drive it quickly. Put simply, this is a brilliant driver’s car with the ability to plant a big smile on your face.

cruise control in polo highline

Adding to the feel-good factor is Volkswagen’s legendary build quality. It feels solid both inside and out and you know that even after five years of hard usage, it won’t look the worse for wear.

At Rs 8.02 lakh, it isn't too far off the car that currently dominates this class - the Swift ZXi+ at Rs 7.58 lakh. For the same money, you can get a compact SUV too but that won’t be half as much fun once the newness wears off. So, if you are looking for a hatchback that's both fun to drive and very useable on a daily basis, the VW Polo 1.0 TSI is the one for you.

Cruise control

Automatically keeps your car moving at a safe, constant speed..

Our cruise control system 1 works electronically to help regulate your car's speed. It reduces the stress on drivers and offers you more comfort on long journeys by keeping the vehicle at a constant speed. It's particularly effective when you have to stay within speed limits for a long way - when driving through miles of roadworks on the motorway, for example - and cuts the risk of your speed creeping up by accident.

The system works by memorising and maintaining the speed you select. It's very flexible, too. You can increase or reduce speed manually - to a defined value - and you also have the option of returning to the speed most recently memorised.

The cruise control system can be turned off simply by pressing a button or by pressing the brake or clutch pedals. For safety reasons, the cruise control system should not be used in heavy traffic or in difficult road conditions, such as heavy rain or ice.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Volkswagen ’s safe distance technology ..

cruise control in polo highline

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) helps to avoid accidents by always keeping your car at a safe distance from the traffic ahead.

Working together with the radar-controlled Front Assist traffic monitoring system, our adaptive cruise control system keeps you at a safe distance from the vehicle in front, making driving much easier - whether on motor way journeys or in slow and moving traffic.

As with cruise control, you set the speed at which you want your car to maintain. This is then further enhanced by being equipped with the safe-distance technology using a radar sensor, which modulates your speed based on traffic conditions. The system detects traffic slowing ahead and automatically reduces your speed to match and maintain an appropriate gap to the car in front. If necessary, the system will bring your car to a complete stop.

It does this with the help of the Front Assist system which primes the brakes if it senses a collision is likely, shortening the stopping distance when the driver hits the brake pedal.

How it works

The safe-distance technology 's radar sensor has a range of up to 200 metres and a beam angle of 12 degrees. The radar sensor and control unit are combined into a single unit which is located at the front of the car.

Using the signals from the radar sensor, the control unit computes the distance to the vehicle ahead and your car's speed relative to it. It also works out its lateral position on multi-lane roads. If there are several vehicles within the sensor's field of coverage at the same time, this information is used to select which of the vehicles the system should track. The radar sensor is not capable of detecting stationary obstructions, such as the end of a tailback or crash barriers, however.

If approaching a slower vehicle ahead or if another vehicle cuts in front of you, the adaptive cruise control slows down the car by initiating corrective controls in the engine management and, if necessary, in the braking system too. If the required rate of deceleration exceeds 30% of the vehicle's maximum stopping power, visual and audible warning signals will prompt the driver to apply the brakes manually.

Adaptive Cruise Control V1.5

In addition to the standard Adaptive Cruise Control, this version has a greater operating range of speeds between 0 -130mph.

Adaptive Cruise Control with Predictive Cruise Control

In addition to the above, this updated version of ACC includes:

Road recognition - using information from front and rear cameras and route information, your vehicle will predictively adjust its speed prior to junctions and bends.

Speed Assist - using both the front camera and route information identifies changes in the posted speed limit and automatically adjusts the vehicles speed.

Your protection is a priority for us, so we welcome independent crash tests to be carried out on our cars.
