cruise around thailand and vietnam

Hong Kong is a place of contrasts. Sleek, glassy skyscrapers shine above Old World markets where chicken feet and dried squid are displayed for sale. Archaic wooden boats bob past sleek cruise liners. Subway stations and expressway interchanges dot a landscape cluttered with Rolls Royces and rickshaws. Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain in 1842 when those serving the British crown attacked the island. Though it was deeded back to China in 1997, Hong Kong enjoys a high degree of autonomy, especially in its economy and municipal government. Hong Kong is one of the most unique Chinese cities in the world. The 417-square mile island off the coast of China offers visitors a slice of authentic Chinese culture with all the amenities of home. A modern metropolis teeming with eastern and western influences, Hong Kong is the world's third-largest financial center, the so-called “Wall Street of Asia,” and a shopping gold mine. Shopping? Yes indeed. Hong Kong is a duty-free port and the world's leading exporter of toys, garments, watches, and electronics. As a result, the vast majority of the 10 million annual visitors come with an empty suitcase that they fill up after visiting the malls, street bazaars (Stanley Market is world famous), textile and tailor shops, and jade and electronic stores. Those willing to look beyond the bargain-basement prices will find that Hong Kong is more than the world’s largest department store – it’s a cultural Mecca with wining and dining, museums, and historic attractions. Be sure to ride the world famous Star Ferry across the harbor to Hong Kong Island, admire the mansions on Repulse Bay, drop in to see the temples on Cat Street, visit the fishing boats and villages in Aberdeen, and take a tram ride up to Victoria Peak (the island’s highest peak sitting 1,308-feet above the city) for a stunning panoramic view. If you have time to go further, travel to Macau, a former Portuguese colony with a casino, and the New Territories of China, a Hong Kong bedroom community that “sleeps” near China’s border.

Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is known for its centuries-old architecture and a rich culture with Southeast Asian, Chinese and French influences. At its heart is the chaotic Old Quarter, where the narrow streets are roughly arranged by trade. There are many little temples, including Bach Ma, honoring a legendary horse, plus Dong Xuan market, selling household goods and street food.

cruise around thailand and vietnam

Chan May Port is located in the south-east corner of Thua Thien-Hue Province in Loc Vinh commune, Phu Loc district, Vietnam. Chan May Port is mainly used for the wood chip industry. Occasionally, luxury cruise liners berth at Chan May as the port is located between the main tourist locations of Hue City and Hoi An. There currently are no passenger facilities at Chan May Port. Chan May is close to many great attractions. One gem that should not be missed is Hue, the former imperial city. Hue was the capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945, and the Royal Palace, named the Forbidden Purple City, is just as mysterious as Beijing’s Forbidden City. Chan May is also close to the major port city of Da Nang as well as one of the most beautiful stretches of sand in central Vietnam – China Beach.

Ho Chi Minh City

cruise around thailand and vietnam

In the core of the Mekong Delta, Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is second the most important in Vietnam after Hanoi. It is not only a commercial center but also a scientific, technological, industrial and tourist center. The city is bathed by many rivers, arroyos and canals, the biggest river being the Saigon River. Many centuries ago, Saigon was already a busy commercial center. Merchants from China, Japan and many European countries would sail upstream the Saigon River to reach the islet of Pho, a trading center. In the year of 1874, Cho Lon merged with Saigon, forming the largest city in the Indochina. It had been many times celebrated as the Pearl of the Far East. After the reunification of the country, the 6 th National Assembly in its meeting of the 2 nd of July, 1976, has officially rebaptized Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City. Today, Ho Chi Minh City is the big tourism center in Vietnam, attracting a large of visitors to Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City has various attractions as Ho Chi Minh Museum, formerly known as Dragon House Wharf, Cu Chi Tunnels, system of museums, theatres, cultural houses... Recently, many tourist areas are invested such as Thanh Da, Binh Quoi Village, Dam Sen Park, Saigon Water Park, Suoi Tien, Ky Hoa..., which draw numerous tourists.

A foreigner's reaction to Thailand's capital is often as confused as the city's geography. Bangkok has no downtown, and streets, like the traffic, seem to veer off in every direction. There's even confusion about the city's name: though to Thais it is Krung Thep, the City of Angels, foreigners call it Bangkok. The oldest quarter clusters along the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River, which snakes between Bangkok and Thonburi, where the capital was first established after the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767. When King Rama I moved his capital in 1782 across the river, he chose a site that foreign vessels knew from their navigational charts as the village of Bangkok. This settlement -- dominated by the Grand Palace and bordered by the Chao Phraya and semicircular klongs (canals) -- is called Ratanakosin and is today a jumble of streets that lead to palaces, government buildings, temples, and museums. In the last 25 years, the city has changed enormously. Before Bangkok became the destination for American servicemen during the Vietnam War, it had a population of 1.5 million. Then, as U.S. dollars attracted the rural poor and development began, it grew to more than 10 million, nearly 15% of the population and 40 times the size of any other city in Thailand. Nowadays, space in which to live and breathe is inadequate. Bangkok is infamous for its traffic-jammed streets and sois (side streets and alleys), and its air pollution is among the worst in the world (policemen directing traffic wear masks). When the economy collapsed in 1997 the traffic situation improved as people sold their cars instead of driving them, and the population shrunk as many returned to the countryside. But as the economy bounces back so does congestion. The skytrain, which opened in December 1999, makes some difference, and a subway system scheduled to open in 2002 should help. However, some streets, particularly Sukhumvit Road and other major arteries, still look like parking lots during much of the day, and as construction reawakens with the reviving economy, the traffic will only get worse. Even with its growing pains, though, Bangkok gives you a sense of history and timelessness, perhaps because King Rama I set out to build a city as beautiful as old Ayutthaya before the Burmese sacked it. Bangkok's contrasts require an adjustment on your part, but amid the chaos you soon come to appreciate the gentle nature of the Thais and their genuine respect for other people.

Amphoe Ko Samui

cruise around thailand and vietnam

The island was probably first inhabited about 15 centuries ago, settled by fishermen from the Malay Peninsula[2] and southern China. It appears on Chinese maps dating back to 1687, under the name Pulo Cornam. The name samui is mysterious in itself. Perhaps it is an extension of the name of one of the native trees, mui. Some people believe that the word "samui" derives from the Malay word "saboey", or "safe haven", although there appears to be no credible corroboration of this. Ko is the Thai word for "island".

Though physically small, Singapore is an economic giant. It has been Southeast Asia's most modern city for over a century. The city blends Malay, Chinese, Arab, Indian and English cultures and religions. Its unique ethnic tapestry affords visitors a wide array of sightseeing and culinary opportunities from which to choose. A full calendar of traditional festivals and holidays celebrated throughout the year adds to its cultural appeal. In addition, Singapore offers luxury hotels, delectable cuisine and great shopping! Located at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore's tropical climate welcomes both leisure and business travelers year round. The island republic's excellent infrastructure enables visitors to enjoy its many sites and attractions in a safe, clean and green environment. Award winning Changi Airport provides airlinks to major cities around the world. The train and subway systems are clean, fast and efficient. In addition, its state-of-the-art cruise terminal has established Singapore as one of the premier cruising centers of South East Asia and an exciting port of call on any Asian cruise itinerary. In the city, there is no need for a car. Public transportation is excellent and walking is a good way to explore the city . All major attractions are also accessible by tour bus. Since the city is only 60 miles (100k) from the equator, the tropical temperatures do not vary much. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed through the year. No matter when you choose to visit, warm weather will be abundantly available. The visitor is struck immediately by Singapore's abundance of parks, nature reserves, and lush, tropical greenery. Singapore's progress over the past three decades has been remarkable, yet the island has not been overwhelmed by development. Visitors will discover a wealth of historical treasures from the past, in the beauty of older buildings, values and traditions that have survived in the face of profound social and geographical change. Lacking any noteworthy natural resources, Singapore's early prosperity was based on a vigorous free trade policy, put in place in 1819 when Sir Stamford Raffles first established it as a British trading post. Later, mass industrialization bolstered the economy, and today the state boasts the world's second busiest port after Rotterdam, minimal unemployment, and a super efficient infrastructure. Almost the entire population lives in upscale new apartments, and the average per capita income is over US$12,000. Singapore is a clean, safe place to visit, its amenities are second to none and its public places are smoke-free and hygienic. Forming the core of downtown Singapore is the Colonial District. Each surrounding enclave has its own distinct flavor, from the aromatic spice stores of Little India, to the tumbledown backstreets of Chinatown, where it is still possible to find calligraphers and fortune tellers, or the Arab Quarter, whose cluttered stores sell fine cloths and silks. North of the city, are two nature preserves, Bukit Timah and the Central Catchment Area, along with the splendid Singapore Zoological Gardens. The east coast features good seafood restaurants set on long stretches of sandy beach. In addition there are over fifty islands and islets within Singaporean waters, all of which can be reached with varying degrees of ease. Day trips are popular to Sentosa, the island amusement arcade which is linked to the south coast by a short causeway and cable car. Music, theater, nightlife: all are abundant in this remarkable city. Singapore used to be considered a "stop over" on the way to larger Asian cities. This is no longer true! Visitors seek out Singapore for business and finance and also for a fascinating and satisfying vacation for the whole family. Strategically located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula sixty miles from the equator, Singapore has for centuries been a crossroads between East and West. Chinese traders en route to India had navigated its waters from at least the 5th century. In the 14th century it was part of the powerful Vijayan Empire and was known as Tenmasek or Sea Town. Legend has it that it was renamed Singa Pura or Lion City after a visiting Sumatran prince saw an animal he mistook for a lion, an animal considered a good omen. Modern Singapore came into being in 1819 when Sir Stamford Raffles claimed what was then a small fishing village as a regional base for the East India Company. The island's natural harbor and location made it an ideal site for a trading post serving British trade interests between China, the Malay world and India. Singapore flourished as its free trade policy attracted merchants and residents from all over the world. Raffles initiated a town plan which included leveling one hill to form a new commercial district (now Raffles Place) and constructing government buildings around another hill (now called Fort Canning Hill). The British plan also involved separating the population according to ethnic categories with Europeans, Indians, Chinese and Malays each living and working in their own distinct quarters of the city. Revenues soared in ensuing years from the production of opium and rubber. Millionaires were made overnight. Immigration rose steadily. The island became Britain's strategic defense base in the Far East but fell to the Japanese in 1942. After the world war ended in 1945, Singapore became a crown colony. It gained self governing status in 1959 and independence in 1965 when it became part of the new state of Malaysia which united Malaya with Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak. The alliance did not last. Singapore was used to being on its own, and within two years the island set up its own stable government and became known as the Republic of Singapore. Under Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's leadership, Singapore continued to strengthen its infrastructure and its industrial base. Housing and urban renovation kept pace with population growth. The areas of health and education are strong. Singapore's leaders have also brought order and progress through strict regulation of social behavior. Smoking in public was banned, as was gum chewing. High economic growth rates have supported political stability. Singapore is the world's second busiest seaport, has an airport served by over 50 major airlines. It has state of the art communication and mass transit systems. It is Asia's premier center for finance and business and the world's third largest oil refining center. Over 7 million visit the tiny island every year.

Adventure Cruises in Thailand

Stunning scenery, delicious food, Thailand has it all and an adventure cruise is the best way to take it all in.

Thailand is a top-rated destination for small ship cruises and island hopping. The Phang Nga Bay area near Phuket is renowned for resembling paradise on earth, while the Similan & Surin Islands off the Thai west coast have their claim to fame. In the south, the Phang Nga Bay near Phuket is renowned for resembling paradise on earth, including Phi Phi Islands, Krabi, Koh Ha, and Koh Yao Noi. Famous for featuring in Hollywood movies such as ‘The Beach’ and James Bond: ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’, the scenic Phang Nga Bay is dotted with dramatic green, lush, limestone islands adorned with stunning white beaches. There are plenty of opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. Some islands are hollow and can be visited inside at low tide for monkey and wildlife spotting. This is an all-year-round destination where you can explore caves and beaches and climb to island viewpoints to watch the sunset; adventure cruises in Thailand offer it all. Alternatively, cruise around the beautiful Similan and Surin Islands, located northwest of Phuket, 70km from the beach village Khao Lak. Established as a national park in 1982, the islands are well known for their rich birdlife on land, plus spectacular corals and diverse marine life underwater, ideal for swimming, diving, and snorkeling.

Best Thailand cruises and areas to visit

The two main areas for adventure cruises are northwest of Phuket : the Similan & Surin Islands, and the islands east/southeast of Phuket: Koh Phi Phi , Koh Ha, Koh Lanta, Krabi, and Koh Yao Noi.

Similan & Surin Islands

Located off the west coast of Thailand, the Similan & Surin Islands are a must-visit for their rich birdlife, vivid corals, and stunning marine life. The islands have been declared a national park since 1982. Wavy palm trees and huge boulders align the beaches of the Similan Islands, rendering a beautiful, rugged picture. The Similan Islands consist of 11 islands, all best known by their number. Donald Duck Bay, at the northern end of Island Number 8, is one of the most photogenic spots. It is idyllic, with pristine beaches and unique rock formations that are relatively easy to climb. The scenery of Surin Island, with evergreen forests, mangroves, and small beaches, surpasses even that of the picturesque Similan Islands.

Ko Racha Noi

Located 22 kilometers south of the main island of Phuket and 10 kilometers from its sister island Ko Racha Yai, Ko Racha Noi is a world-famous scenic bay. The waters around Ko Racha Noi are beautiful emerald green and home to scores of marine life, such as lionfish, scorpionfish, stingrays, and barracuda. Exploring the waters around Ko Racha Noi will be an unforgettable experience for anyone who snorkels or dives there, regardless of their level of experience.

Phang Nga Bay - Southern Phuket

Phang Nga Bay is a world-famous scenic bay located east of Phuket and includes the islands south of Phuket. The lush tropical limestone islands with white sandy beaches are great for adventure cruises on small ships as distances are relatively small. Swim and snorkel around the islands of Phi Phi , Koh Ha, Krabi, Koh Lanta, and Koh Yao Noi. Some of the islands are hollow, and at low tide, it is possible to kayak under the island and explore the inside. Enjoy the islands’ tropical jungle vegetation, birds and monkeys, and little villages, and hike up the hills to watch the sunset from a viewpoint or relax on the beautiful beaches.

Railay Beach

If you want to see the Railay Peninsula's beautiful beaches and mountains, then a boat ride from Ao Nang is your only option. Railay Beach  is just a 15-minute trip that will take you all around this peninsula and its incredible natural scenery. The three main beaches on the peninsula are: Railay East, known for its beautiful sunrise, but it's otherwise best avoided, as it is part of a mangrove swamp and doesn't make very nice swimming or sunbathing. Anyone interested in swimming and sunbathing should head westward towards the white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Railay West is where we find most restaurants and bars on this side of the island. Several alleys connect it with the east coast.

Best time to cruise in Thailand

Cruising around the Similan & Surin Islands is best from November to May when the Andaman Sea is calm, and the weather is beautiful. The islands of Phang Nga Bay are great for adventure cruises all year round due to their more protected location off the east coast of Phuket. Thailand is famous for its incredible sunsets, especially with the picturesque islands in the background.

How to get to Thailand

Thailand’s capital Bangkok is one of Asia’s major hubs; all major global airlines serve this airport. From Bangkok, it is a short 1.5-hour domestic flight to Phuket, although many airlines fly directly to Phuket as well. Alternatively, you can fly easily into Phuket via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Phuket airport is a 50 min taxi ride to Chalong Pier from where your small ship cruise will depart.

Thailand Cruise Tips

Plan well ahead for your cruise adventure to ensure availability for your desired cruise and choose your trip at the right time of year. The same applies to arranging your flights and transfers; it is best to do that well in advance to avoid non-availability. It is highly recommended to book your flights to arrive in Phuket a little earlier, maybe 1 or 2 days before your cruise departs, to allow for any possible (luggage) delays and/or to get adjusted to the new time zone so you will be well rested. Thailand cruise packing tips include sunscreen, sunglasses, bathing suits, insect repellents, hats, light but long sleeve shirts as the Thai sun can be fierce, and a hoodie for chilly evenings. If you have your snorkeling gear, we recommend bringing it on your cruise as it fits you properly. Most boats also offer snorkeling gear on board, in case you do not have your own. Do not forget to bring a long sleeve shirt and shorts for swimming/snorkeling to avoid sunburn. Travel advice Visitors from most Western countries can obtain a ‘visa on arrival’ single entry stamp that allows them to stay for up to 30 days. Please check with the Thai embassy in your country for more details. Ensure that your passport has a minimum of 6 months validity from the date you will arrive in Thailand. Entry may be refused if a passport is damaged or has missing pages. You may be required to show a confirmed return or onward ticket to leave Thailand within the maximum days you are allowed to stay in the country.

Additionally, visa-on-arrival visitors may also be asked for evidence of adequate finances for the duration of their intended stay, equivalent to 10,000 Thai Baht per person or 20,000 Baht per family. The currency in Thailand is the Thai Baht, which you can withdraw from ATMs all around the country. There are also plenty of exchange booths at Phuket airport and around Phuket. The most commonly accepted credit cards include Mastercard and Visa.

Sail to the always exciting and enchantingly chaotic capital of Bangkok, where you’ll find magnificent temples, golden Buddhas, vibrant street life, and welcoming people. Discover some of Thailand’s best beaches in Ko Samui, where you can bask in the shade of a coconut palm. In Phuket, take in the splendor of golden-roofed Buddhist temples, and sample delicious food famous for its fragrant Thai spices. Cruises to Thailand with Celebrity offer a genuine feast for the senses.

Thailand Cruise Highlights

City life in bangkok.

In Bangkok, life is vibrant, welcoming, eclectic, and chaotically exciting. Take in the sights via a canal tour and watch traditional puppeteers re-enact ancient folklore tales. Wander through the massive Chatuchak Market to browse and shop for handmade clothes, spices, crafts, and Thai fabrics. Enjoy a drink high in the sky on the 63rd floor of the State Tower, a skyscraper topped with a lavish dome, and take in panoramic views of the glittering city skyline.

Ancient Buddhist Temples

On cruises to Thailand, you’ll have the opportunity to see some of the most revered and ancient temples and Buddhist holy sites anywhere in Asia. Thailand is home to around 33,,000 active temples including the massive and ornate Wat Arun in Bangkok which lights up the skyline at night. Take a trip up Nakkerd Hill in Phuket to see the famous Big Buddha statue that looks over the city. For a more rustic experience, visit the terracotta-hued Wat Ratcha Thammaram in Ko Samui which pays homage to legendary sea monsters and ancient Buddhist warriors.

White Sand Beaches

When visiting Thailand, don’t miss world-renowned beaches like Maenam in Ko Samui, with over four miles of unspoiled, silky white sand underneath your feet. Try a surf class or snorkeling adventure in the bright blue waters of Kata Noi Beach in Phuket. Take a day trip to Pattaya from Bangkok, where you’ll find a lively entertainment scene, plenty of watersports, and great local beach restaurants where you can sample fragrant Thai dishes.

Thailand Cruise Ports

The brilliance of Bangkok isn’t just in its size, but rather how much just one city can offer when it comes to food, nightlife, history, and cultural highlights. Don’t miss a chance to see the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, a golden statue measuring over 150 feet long, and 50 meters tall. Tour the city’s famous sites via canal boat, or drift along the Chao Phraya river past intricate temples. Take a Thai cooking class then enjoy some of Bangkok’s best views with a martini at the rooftop bar at Vertigo atop the Banyan Tree hotel during your overnight stay.

Ko Samui’s famous beaches draw travelers looking for a complete, tropical island escape while still enjoying an upbeat local Thai culture and plenty of activities. Have an adventure on a 4x4 jungle safari tour to see some of the best sites like Namuang Waterfall, Mummified Monk, and Buddha’s Magic Garden, all in one day. Or take it easy on the calm shores of Maenam Beach, where you can lunch on Thai specialties with your toes in the sand.

On the mountainous island of Phuket, you’ll find palm-shaded, white sand beaches, adventurous jungle treks, and rich Thai heritage and traditions. Take a boat tour through some of the limestone islands in Phang Nga Bay where you can explore caves, mangroves, and rock formations that jut straight out of the turquoise-colored water. Browse for art and local handicrafts at the colorful shophouses in Phuket’s Old Town then visit the nearby Jui Tui Shrine, famous for its three ornate altars that pay homage to Chinese gods.

7 amazing cruise itineraries to book in 2024

I don't know about you, but each year, as the weather turns cold, I start daydreaming about getting out of Dodge — or, in my case, Pennsylvania. My mind wanders to cruises that will take me to places where the temperature is warmer, but I also take a hard look at the (exceptionally lengthy) list of places I'm longing to visit.

After digging through what's new for 2024, I've come up with a shortlist of sailings that I think are noteworthy. They range from a standard Bahamas voyage with a new twist and an extended Alaska sailing that includes a foray across the Arctic Circle to more far-flung destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dream on, dear reader, and add these to your list of 2024 cruise itineraries.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Seabourn's 'Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas' itinerary

Last year, the Australia and New Zealand cruise region gained momentum following the pandemic shutdown. In 2024, the hardly populated Australia region of The Kimberley is gaining popularity. Luxury cruise brand Seabourn will be offering a series of six 10-night voyages between Broome and Darwin on expedition vessel Seabourn Pursuit during what will be early winter in the southern hemisphere.

The line's " Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas " will take passengers to places along the coast few passengers are able to visit to see the stunning teal waters and horizontal waterfalls of Talbot Bay, sample wines in the Hunter River Region and check out nature preserves in Wyndham.

Details: The first sailing, from Darwin to Broome, embarks on June 12. The final voyage, from Broome to Darwin, departs on Aug. 1. Prices start from $6,134 per person ($613 per person, per night), double occupancy, for the July 2 cruise. All accommodations are suites with balconies.

Celebrity's 'Best of Japan' and 'Vietnam and Thailand' cruises

The number of voyages in Asia was trending upward notably prior to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought cruising in the region to an extended halt. And it's once again on the rise. Following that curve, Celebrity Cruises will be running new 11- to 13-night Asia sailings in 2024 on two ships — Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Solstice — that bring stops in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand.

What's notable about the offerings is that they will aim to immerse passengers further into the destinations by including overnights in a total of 11 ports across all itineraries. That means more time to explore Hanoi's Old Quarter as the sun sets, indulge in nighttime gastronomy in Hong Kong, visit one of Bangkok's many markets, or learn why Osaka is known for street food.

Details: Celebrity Millennium's " Best of Japan " cruises run from early mid-March to early October. At press time, the least expensive fares — for a 12-night sailing — start from $1,330 per person ($111 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. It travels round-trip from Yokohama and visits Hiroshima, Pusan and other ports, including Osaka, where the ship will overnight.

Celerbrity Solstice's Vietnam and Thailand cruises kick off in mid-January and run through March. The ship will resume them again in the fall of 2024 and run through the winter season. Prices start from $1,255 per person ($105 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. The voyage sails from Hong Kong to Singapore with stops in Da Nang and Koh Samui, plus overnights in Hanoi and Bangkok.

SeaDream's 'Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles' sailing

Here's one to put on your radar if you're looking to book — but not necessarily sail — in 2024. It's a new Mediterranean itinerary that doesn't start up for nearly three more years, in 2026. The SeaDream routing brings stops at seven ports that are rarely visited by cruise passengers. During the seven-night voyages, there will be calls at Primosten, Croatia; Cesme, Turkey; Cetubal, Portugal; and Kythira, Kythnos, Syvota and Tinos, Greece — making these sailings unique and well-suited to anyone who loves the region but who's looking for new places to experience.

SeaDream's small ships, each of which carries just 112 people, are able to reach locales about which passengers on megaships can only fantasize. Couple that with excellent service, and you'll be visiting the Our Lady of Loretto statue in Primosten, touring the Cesme Castle and lounging on stunning Greek beaches from a home base that puts you squarely in the lap of luxury.

Details: An itinerary that includes three of the seven new ports is the 11-night " Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles " itinerary from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, departing on Aug. 8, 2026, on SeaDream I. Prices start from $10,399 per person ($946 per person, per night) for a room with a porthole view.

Holland America's 'Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice' Legendary Voyage

Alaska is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the vastness of untouched wilderness, the wildlife it houses and adventurous pursuits it provides. (Think whale-watching, hiking on glaciers and salmon fishing.) However, Holland America 's Westerdam is hosting a 28-day sailing that's anything but your standard cruise to the Last Frontier .

Passengers will visit the usual Alaska ports, such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, with scenic sailing through the Inside Passage, past Hubbard Glacier and to Glacier Bay. But they can also expect less-common stops at places like Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage (with an overnight) and Homer. Plus, about halfway through, this cruise crosses the Arctic Circle — a rite of passage for many travelers.

Details: Holland America's 28-day " Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice " cruise — one of the line's Legendary Voyages, known for longer durations and a unique mix of port calls — sails June 9-July 7, round-trip from Seattle. Inside cabins start from $5,299 per person (about $189 per person, per night).

Silversea's summertime French Polynesia cruises

Another consideration for future travel is Silversea Cruises , which is featuring its first full-summer season in French Polynesia in 2026. Silver Whisper will offer two immersive itineraries, including overnights, across 17 voyages between April and September.

Passengers can choose seven-night sailings that visit idyllic favorites like Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine and which also include overnights in Bora Bora. Or, they can cruise for twice as long by selecting a 14-night voyage that calls on the same ports as the seven-night option but with Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva, Atuona and Tahuata added.

Details: Silversea's seven-night voyages begin April 6, 2026, and start from $5,650 per person ($808 per person, per night) for an ocean-view cabin.

The line's 14-night sailings start on April 20, 2026. Fares start from $10,450 per person ($747 per person, per night) for ocean-view accommodations.

New Bermuda voyages on Carnival Venezia

Beginning in May of 2025, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Venezia will sail a series of eight four- and five-night cruises to Bermuda from New York. These itineraries are notable because the line is aiming to increase its presence there but also because the style of the ship is new to even most of the brand's most dedicated passengers.

In 2022, Carnival announced its Costa by Carnival concept after revealing it would be transferring ships from its Costa sister brand to the Carnival fleet. Now, when travelers visit the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse or check out the island's renowned pink-sand beaches during a sailing on Carnival Venezia, they can enjoy both the Italian style of the ship and Carnival's fun atmosphere and high service standards.

Details: Voyages kick off on May 22, 2025. Prices start from $429 per person ($108 per person, per night) for an inside cabin on a four-night cruise departing Sept. 18, 2025.

Disney Cruise Line's Lighthouse Point itineraries

Disney Cruise Line 's new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , a private destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is set to open in June with a three-night preview sailing on June 6 aboard Disney Magic. Following the initial voyage, the line will run regular three- to seven-night voyages to Lighthouse Point on Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

The island will feature a dedicated family beach and water play area, an arts and culture pavilion focused on Bahamian culture, 20 family cabanas, an adults-only beach and a selection of shore excursion options.

Details: Prices for itineraries that include Lighthouse Point start from $624 per person ($208 per person, per night) for a three-night cruise on Disney Magic. The cruise departs Nov. 5 and sails from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Luxury Cruises to Vietnam

Vietnam cruises with Celebrity show you the many faces of this intriguing country. Ancient temples, incense heavy in the air, contrast with a backdrop of glassy skyscrapers. A constant stream of scooters and motorbikes forms a river of activity through the busy cities, where street food sizzles on roadside stalls. But there’s serenity, too. Historic palaces and ornate pagodas lie in the midst of dense tropical vegetation, while emerald rice paddies reflect the vast sky.

Join a cooking class to prepare fresh, spicy Vietnamese specialties. Take a cycling tour around the enchanting town of Hoi An. See the sheer-sided limestone towers of Halong Bay from a kayak, and delve into modern history in Ho Chi Minh City, with its poignant museums and nearby, the famous Cu Chi Tunnels. You’ll find a dazzling choice of activities and excursions on a luxury cruise to Southeast Asia with Celebrity.

Vietnam Cruise Highlights

Ancient temples.

Vietnam’s countryside is dotted with majestic temples displaying an ageless beauty of bygone cultures. My Son temple complex, near Danang, is one of the most impressive, dedicated to the Hindu god, Shiva. Although the crumbling buildings are partly consumed by tropical greenery, a visit here gives you an insight into the wealth and sophistication of Vietnam’s Cham dynasty. Near Hue, visit the Imperial City, a complex within the walled citadel that was once the seat of Vietnam’s Nguyen rulers.

Dazzling Scenery

When it comes to jaw-dropping natural beauty, Vietnam has it all. Some 1,600 jungly limestone towers are scattered across an often mist-shrouded sea in Halong Bay, where tooth-like mountains are reflected in mirror-calm paddy fields. In the far south, rivers criss-cross the vast maze of the green Mekong Delta, coconut palms lining their banks. You’ll find endless golden beaches, too, especially around Danang, lapped by the warm waters of the South China Sea.

Exciting Cuisine

Vietnamese food is both elegant and unique, and packed with contrasts. Spicy dishes are tempered with fresh herbs and vegetables, while crispy salads are paired with refreshing soups and noodles. During your cruise, you could learn to make classic dishes like crispy spring rolls, stir-fried beef, minty chicken salad, and green papaya salad topped with fresh shrimp. Even if you prefer not to cook, don’t miss a chance to browse Vietnam’s colorful markets and dine in a local restaurant.

How a Travel Agent Helped Turn My Family Vacation in Vietnam Into a Spectacular Trip

About two-thirds of the way through our three-week-long trip, I realized why I was having the best trip ever: I didn’t have to make any decisions.

Ariel Frager/Travel + Leisure

I didn’t mean to hire a Vietnamese travel agency to plan our three-week family adventure. In fact, when the agency asked if they could create an itinerary for our trip to Vietnam beyond a single tour, I scoffed.

"No way, I always make my own arrangements,” I thought.

But I found myself agreeing anyway, curious to see what they thought an American family would like to do while visiting Vietnam. I considered taking their ideas and booking everything on my own, but when I saw the itinerary for the bespoke tour featuring private drivers and tour guides, visits to locals-only spots, and an all-inclusive price shockingly low to my North American wallet, they were hired.

When I was initially beginning to plan a family trip to Vietnam, I texted my friend Andrea Fleming. Fleming, who lives in Hanoi and is a school counselor at the international school there, immediately replied with a 10-minute-long voice memo, emphatically telling me in February that I had to book our June cruise in Ha Long Bay immediately because the ships would sell out. She recommended Blue Asia Tours, the agency that all the local international teachers use for their travels. When I sent her the proposed itinerary for our entire trip before committing to it, Andrea reassured me that the price was fair and that we would see more of the country in three weeks than she had after living there for three years.

Ariel Frager/Travel + Leisure

Between the time I put down the deposit and our flights, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself since our trip was already planned. I am fully aware of my control issues, so willingly giving up my power to direct our trip took restraint I didn’t know I had.

My email correspondence with Quang Hòa, the owner of Blue Asia Tours, refined our itinerary. We wanted to trek through the highlands of Sapa, so Quang, who insisted I call him Mr. Lucas, added a few days in the far north. After talking to a friend who had honeymooned in Vietnam, we traded our time at party-central Nha Trang beach for the more family-friendly Phu Quoc, a Vietnamese island in the Gulf of Thailand. I wanted to learn more about the Vietnam War, so we added tours of the Mekong Delta and the Cu Chi tunnels in the south. Co-creating the trip with Blue Asia helped ease some of my anxiety.

Immediately after the last day of school, our family of three — me, my husband, and our 11-year-old son — landed in steamy, humid Hanoi. Slightly travel-delirious after 24 hours in motion, we stumbled out of the airport to find a well-dressed driver holding a sign with my name. I felt like a rock star. The driver grabbed our bags and whisked us through the moped-clogged city traffic to our four-star accommodations in the Old Quarter. Immediately upon connecting to Wi-Fi, my WhatsApp pinged, and our liaison, Hồng Nguyễn from Blue Asia, welcomed us to Vietnam and asked to meet with us to review the itinerary later that afternoon.

After quick showers, we walked through the Old Quarter. We felt the buzzy energy of the 5.2 million-strong population zipping through the busy streets. Introducing our son to Asia was a major impetus for our trip. He is a well-traveled kid, and I figured the summer before sixth grade was a perfect time for him to experience a culture very different than our own.

While he was excited to be there, my mama-radar told me that food was imperative. Our tour hadn’t started yet, so we were on our own for lunch. It was so hot, and we were all tired and just couldn’t decide where to eat. The bickering started slowly as we read menus, and though we were beckoned by plenty of servers, we just couldn’t decide. Finally, we noticed a cơm gà hải nam' shop filled with local diners. We were familiar with the traditional chicken and rice dish, and our crankiness lessened with each bite. Our intrepid little family returned to the hotel just in time to meet Hồng, whose name in English translates to Rosie.

I shared with Rosie that when I first saw our packed-day itinerary, I was a bit worried we would be too busy to fully enjoy Vietnam. Rosie assured me we would have a great time and said I could text her anytime.

I didn’t know what to expect from our trip. I had traveled in Southeast Asia before, but the nuances of understanding Vietnam after the American War (as the Vietnamese call it) and now the post-pandemic era were yet to be resolved. As I settled into the rhythm of being on the road, I found myself relaxing in the process of being cared for. By not consulting my phone all the time about what we should do next, I was more fully present for each delicious moment.

My son and I trekked through the rice fields in the northern highland region, my husband sidelined by a short-lived bout of food poisoning. Our H’mong guide Sung, a member of one of 54 ethnic minorities in Vietnam who the agency had hired to teach us about her culture while introducing us to her homeland in the Hoang Lien Son mountains, nimbly guided us through steep and muddy terrain amid torrential rainstorms. I stopped frequently on our seven-mile hike, my jaw dropping as I drank in the beauty and precision of the terraced rice fields.

When we finally arrived at our homestay in the mountain village, my husband was waiting for us. He said the smiles on our faces, despite being drenched, lit up the rain-soaked sky.

As we followed the well-worn traveler's path from the North to the South, we did both heavily touristy activities, like taking in a water puppet show in Hanoi and setting free candle wishes on Thu Bon River in Hoi An, and less trendy things like mud bathing in a pitch-black cave in Phong Nha National Park. Hangry-fueled intra-family squabbling ceased because so many meals were included in our tour; no decisions were required. Private drivers minded our luggage on travel days that included en-route tours, complete with English-speaking guides. One Sunday, as we traveled from the imperial city of Hue to Hoi An, our driver brought us to Dream Spring, a locally known swimming hole. We were grateful to share the crystal-clear waters and secret Sunday picnic spot with the local families.

About two-thirds of the way through our trip, as the three of us were feasting on yet another tasty lunch, I realized why I was having the best trip ever: I didn’t have to make any decisions. Rosie texted me what time we had to meet our driver in the lobby every morning, and away we went. I didn’t have to do anything. No phone calls, no emails, no checking the status of our reservations. All we had to do was show up in our hotel lobby on time. We just flowed through Vietnam, trusting Blue Asia and enjoying the moments rather than controlling them. It turns out that not having to make any decisions was the best travel decision I have ever made.

While we haven't been able to bring you our regular live coverage, we have been keeping an eye on today's latest developments.

Here are the key updates:

  • The Ukrainian military issued a rare statement confirming it had struck four oil refineries in Russia during an early morning drone attack;
  • South Korea summoned the Russian ambassador over the country's new defence pact with North Korea;
  • A Russian guided bomb killed two people and wounded three others in the eastern Ukrainian town of Selydove, according to regional prosecutors;
  • European Union countries have formally approved the launch of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova next week;
  • Vladimir Putin said Russia would keep developing its arsenal of nuclear weapons to preserve the "balance of power in the world".

Here's a look at the latest situation on the ground:

That's all of our live coverage on the conflict for now.

We'll bring you any major developments overnight, and we'll be back with our regular updates in the morning.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is "deeply grateful" for Joe Biden's decision to prioritise air defence deliveries for Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president said his country was in critical need of the capabilities to protect its cities and civilians from Russian attacks.

"The partnership between Ukraine and the United States is strong and unwavering. Together, we are protecting life against terror and aggression," he added.

It comes after the US said a recent defence pact signed by Russia and North Korea was a "cause for concern".

The recently signed defence pact between Russia and North Korea is a cause of concern but is no surprise, the White House has said.

Speaking to reporters, White House spokesman John Kirby said the agreement between the two countries was a sign of Russia's desperation for foreign assistance in the Ukraine war.

The deal has seen both countries vow to help each other if they faced armed aggression, and replaces previous treaties between the countries.

Russia said the pact was needed because of "the deep evolution of the geopolitical situation in the world and the region".

Mr Kirby also said the US would reprioritise planned deliveries of foreign military equipment to go to Ukraine, which is in "desperate need" of more air defence capabilities.

Vladimir Putin has warned that South Korea would be making a "big mistake" if it decides to supply weapons to Ukraine.

The Russian president's comments come after South Korea said a new defence agreement between North Korea and Moscow was "absurd" and it would reconsider sending arms to Kyiv as a result.

Mr Putin said Seoul had nothing to worry about when it came to the mutual defence pact.

Russian state media quoted him as saying that Moscow expected its cooperation with North Korea to serve as a deterrent to the West.

He also refused to rule out supplying high-precision weapons to the country.

Russia is considering making changes to its nuclear weapons doctrine, Vladimir Putin has said.

The Russian president made the comments while speaking to reporters at the end of his Vietnam trip.

The existing doctrine states that Russia may use such weapons in response to a nuclear strike or in the event of a conventional attack that poses an existential threat to the country.

Ukrainian troops have been launching mid-range reconnaissance drones in Kharkiv.

Russian forces crossed into parts of the northeastern region last month, and officials claim they have seized at least a dozen villages.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Kyiv's forces are gradually pushing Russian troops out of the contested area.

A police search is under way for a woman who allegedly desecrated the graves of Ukrainian soldiers.

Kyiv city's prosecutor's office said the unknown woman vandalised the graves this morning.

Commemorative plaques and lamps were torn off and broken, it said.

The Ukrainian flag was also "mutilated", it added.

"Operational investigations and searches are being carried out to establish the woman's identity," the office said in post on Telegram.

If caught and found guilty, the woman could face up to five years in prison.

We have been reporting today on Vladimir Putin's visit to Vietnam.

Here is a recap of what the Russian president has been up to:

  • Mr Putin signed a series of deals with his Vietnamese counterpart To Lam during his state visit;
  • The two leaders signed agreements to further co-operation on education, science and technology, oil and gas exploration and health;
  • They also agreed to work on a road map for a nuclear science and technology centre in Vietnam;
  • Following the talks, Mr Putin said that the two countries share an interest in "developing a reliable security architecture" in the Asia-Pacific region based on not using force and peacefully settling disputes with no room for "closed military-political blocs";
  • The Russian leader also met Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and is scheduled to meet Communist Party general secretary Nguyen Phu Trong - Vietnam's most powerful politician;
  • The trip has resulted in a sharp rebuke from the US embassy in the country.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Romania's decision to provide his country with two Patriot air defence systems will strengthen security in Ukraine and throughout Europe.

"This crucial contribution will bolster our air shield and help us better protect our people and critical infrastructure from Russian air terror," the Ukrainian president said on X.

The Patriot, which stands for Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target, is a surface-to-air missile defence system.

For months now, Ukraine has been calling for countries to provide more air defence systems to help protect it from Russian attacks.
