The Admiralty & St. Isaac's Cathedral.

In 1704 a shipyard was laid here by order of Peter I, whilst acting as a fortress at the same time. St. Isaac's Cathedral was opened and consecrated in 1858. It became the main church of the capital and the first one in the Empire.

Sphinxes & the Academy of Arts.

Opposite the building of the Academy of Arts, on the Neva River Embankment, there is a granite jetty, which was erected in 1834 by the architect K.Ton. The jetty is decorated with very exotic for St. Petersburg sphinx figures.

The Academy of Sciences & The Rostral Columns

Next to the Kunstkamera is the building of the Academy of Sciencesis - one of Giacomo Quarenghi's first major works and one of his most interesting. It is built in 1789 specially for Academy in classical style. In the past The Rostral Columns were lit at night and during fog, and served as the seaport lighthouses to show the way for ships. This place become the first port and gates of the city.

The Senate and the Synod & Neva River

In fact, there are two buildings, in which two major establishments of the Russian empire - Synod and Senate - settfed down. Their are linked by a transitional galler.

The Admiralty & Nevsky avenue.

A 72-metre Admiralty's spire can be seen from a great distance. It looks like it 'reigns' above the city of Peter the Great. Nevsky avenue is the main street of St. Petersburg.

The Spit of Vasilievsky Island & The Rostral Columns.

The geographers use the word “Spit” in reference to a “sharp” extremity of an island with shores forming part of Vasilyevsky Ostrov. It is “clamped” between the Palace Bridge, which connects the island with Admiralteiskaya Side, and the Birzhevoy Bridge, leading to Petrogradskaya Side. This place become the first port and gates of the city.

Liana Kuznetsova

I am delighted to call St. Petersburg my native city. I graduated from St. Petersburg State University with degree in Philology & English literature. As an experienced traveller, I am convinced that St. Petersburg is one of the most unique and magnificent cities in the world and it’s really worth the visit. Though I have lived here all my life, every time I walk around the city I cannot help but wonder and admire its magic beauty, its broad, straight avenues, majestic palaces and cathedrals, green parks, countless bridges and canals. I am an experienced guide, and have been working as a licensed English-speaking tour guide for seven years. I really enjoy this work because it gives me the opportunity to show off my beautiful city. I also get to meet and communicate with many interesting people, to share my knowledge of history and arts. I guide various excursions: a sight-seeing tour, the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, Peter and Paul’s Fortress, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Church on the Spilt Blood, Peterhof (the “Russian Versailles”), Catherine’s Palace (famous for its Amber Room), and the Yusupov’s Palace (one of the most magnificent private mansions of the 19th and 20th centuries). I conduct various excursions trying to cover all the aspects of the history of the city and our modern life. During different tours you will have the opportunity to catch the spirit of the age of Russian Tsars, revolution, and Soviet times, and I will be glad to share with our guests my admiration and extensive knowledge about the city. It gives me great pleasure to meet people coming for the first time to St. Petersburg, and lead them through the most beautiful and interesting places, showing both the museums and palaces. I believe that St. Petersburg is the most wonderful city in the world !

¡Hola! Me llamo María.

A professional licensed guide

People that we employ all have experience in the travel business and are dedicated to their job we do our best to avoid the unpleasant surprises in anything you had booked or paid for.

Although we focus on the individual tourists and small groups , we are also able to provide large groups with the neccessary arrangements.

All of our tours have both an English speaking driver and a professional licensed guide. This distinguishes us from most of our competitors which only have a Guide/Driver.

Why choose SPB-Tours?

At SPB-Tours, we believe we can offer you the best service for your travel experience. Here are some reasons why:

1. SPB Tours is one of the top attractions in St. Petersburg on TripAdvisor. Our past clients, some of who have since become friends, will vouch for our quality and professionalism. One of our reviewers writes: “If this company is an example of the new Russia their future is assured.” Have a look at our TripAdvisor page .

2. Viktoria Rother, the manager and owner of SPB-Tours, has over 25 years of experience in the travel and tourism industry and knows the business inside and out. Born and raised in St. Petersburg, she has extensive knowledge of the city. Her years of work as a tour guide and tutor at the St. Petersburg State University (Management Department) and subsequent foundation and operation of SPB-Tours has taught her how to provide a high quality and satisfying experience for her guests. Since 2006 SPB-Tours has served thousands of satisfied travelers, and we look forward to continuing that trend for years to come.

3. SPB-Tours is a tight-knit, family-run company with offices in St. Petersburg and Berlin and recently in Barcelona. We are doing the work that we love, and you can see it in our attention to detail. We see each interested guest as a PERSON, not a profit. With SPB-Tours you get the care you’d expect from visiting your own family, because that's what we are. We provide services first-hand, without going through the third parties Our dedicated staff includes a number of native English-, German-, and Spanish-speakers, to ensure the clearest correspondence without risk of miscommunication. While our team and company is very international, we operate under standard Western and American business practices that you would expect.

city tours spb

4. “This company has a human face”, said a 2013 client about SPB-Tours. We have more goals and concerns than just regular business. Our philanthropy initiative dates back to 2010. Since then we have been donating $1 per guest to Orphanage No. 40 in St. Petersburg. This is home to approximately 55 disabled children from 3 to 7 years old, all of whom have problems with their vision. With donations so far, SPB-Tours has supplied necessary medication for the children, office supplies (including a new laptop), two visits to the dolphinarium and one to the circus for all the kids and staff. We are so grateful to all of our past clients who have allowed us the opportunity to give back!

5. SPB-Tours is famous for our creativity and innovative ideas. We are the first tour operator in the Baltic to begin offering a fixed price package tour of the "Baltic Pearls" in multiple ports of call. We have been providing and polishing this package since 2009 and now transport this successful concept to our Mediterranean services. Our head start has given us an edge with more experience and improvements in our services every season. We stand firm behind our itineraries at each port of call and the best price guarantee: we can give you the best package for the most affordable prices.

Our newest innovation is the ability to design your own Mediterranean Pearls package by choosing any combination cities in addition to Barcelona with Palma De Mallorca, Livorno and Civitavecchia. You can book in just two, or all four!

6. SPB-Tours has guaranteed group tour departures with guaranteed flat-rates, and customizable private tours. Whatever your interests, group size, mobility, and budget is, we have a tour that fits your needs! Most large cruise ships qualify for our group tours with flat-rate prices. This means that whether or not the group fills up, everyone qualifies for our unbeatably low prices! Even better: we will fill the groups for you. It's a worry-free booking. We also offer discounts to those willing to help us assemble the groups via CruiseCritic.com roll calls! Email us for details.

7. SPB-Tours has the resources to cover large numbers of groups on any given day. Our busiest tour day to date had our team handling over 500 guests in over 45 different groups in St. Petersburg. We may be a small, family-run company, but that doesn't mean we are limited to small numbers!

city tours spb

7. SPB-Tours uses a simplified booking process. You can book with us, right here, without leaving the website! Your payment is not due until the day of the first tour.

8. The entire SPB-Tours team is like an extended family, from the office staff to the guides and drivers. SPB-Tours is lucky to have a wonderful and highly professional staff. Many of the guides and drivers have known one another for years. All our guides are highly professional, knowledgable, and flexible with years of experience. They all hold university degrees and speak excellent English. Our guides are passionate about sharing the history and their love for the cities they guide in. The tours are not just an occasional side-job to them, they are a priority and a joy. Viktoria ensures that this is the case: the SPB-Tours founder and director is a guide herself with over 25 years of experience. She knows how much of the tour depends upon an excellent guide. As a result, we know our guides very well and only hire the best.

9. Our dedicated drivers are delighted to work for SPB-Tours. They are not hired out from some enormous company that randomly assigns vehicles to employees; they are actually the owners of their vans. Each of our drivers are of excellent character. Because of this, we have developed real relationships with repeat drivers who are truly invested in the services they provide. "The client is the king" is their motto. They are very helpful, caring, professional, and polite. All of our drivers even decent English, which is very seldom in Spain and Italy. Most of them are non-smokers and none will smoke in your presence. They bring their guests as close to the museums' entrances and attractions as possible. All of our fully-insured vans and small buses are air-conditioned, comfortable, and clean. We will always try to get you a vehicle with a few extra seats for your comfort.

city tours spb

10. SPB-Tours constantly strives to improve. We are distributing Feedback Questionnaires in all ports of call. Oscar, the manager of SPB Barcelona will always try to bids you farewell at the dock in Barcelona, Spain. To SPB-Tours Mediterranean, our duty is not fulfilled when we receive payment from you. Our job is only complete when you are leaving the city with delightful memories of your SPB-Tours Mediterranean experience.

AdventHealth makes full acquisition of Kansas City Korn Ferry Tour event

city tours spb

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Advent Health announced Tuesday that all proceeds from the AdventHealth Championship will now stay in the Kansas City community.

The announcement makes the annual stop on the Korn Ferry Tour a fully local event.

“Giving back and supporting our local community is a hallmark of AdventHealth,” said AdventHealth Mid-America Region President and CEO Sam Huenergardt. “It’s important for us to do everything we can to be stewards for our community, and by acquiring this event, we can do just that.”

The AdventHealth Championship previously had been owned by Birmingham, Ala., based company Eventive Sports for the past five years. With all PGA Tour-sanctioned events benefitting local nonprofits, the acquisition that keeps all those profits in Kansas City adds to the community impact of the event.

Since its inception, the event has generated nearly $1 million for local charities.

“Bringing the tournament under the AdventHealth umbrella will allow us to really maximize charitable opportunities,” said AdventHealth Kansas City Foundation Executive Director Laurie McCormack. “Kansas City is a sports town and a very generous one at that. We’re excited to utilize the power of sports with the power of charity to support our community.”

The 2024 AdventHealth Championship will be held at Blue Hills Country Club between May 13-19, 2024. For more information about the tournament, visit here .

“We hope to make this event a cornerstone event in Kansas City,” said Huenergardt. “We are lucky to have great sports teams and traditions here, and it’s time to make professional golf another pillar in our sports ecosystem. The possibilities are endless. We have aspirations for growing professional golf and making this a must-do KC event.”

Nicki Minaj delivers spectacle backed up by skill on biggest tour of her career: Review

city tours spb

WASHINGTON – As one of the most celebrated, successful rappers and engaging personalities, Nicki Minaj could slouch her way through her Pink Friday 2 tour and fans would still slather her with praise.

After all, they don’t seem to mind the continued late starts – 10:20 p.m. at Monday’s Capital One Arena in D.C., more than two hours past the ticketed promise but in line with her timing so far on tour – prefaced by an interminable DJ set.

But Minaj, who kicked off her 30-date world outing March 1 and has produced a string of arena sell-outs since, is undiminished in her vitality and spunkiness.

From the moment she rose from underneath the stage floor, draped in white from the waist down and sporting a metallic top for the confident tone-setter “I’m the Best,” Minaj, 41, oozed coolness.

More: Nicki Minaj Pink Friday 2 tour: See the setlist for her career-spanning concert

Gag City is Nicki Minaj’s Oz

For her first U.S. run in eight years, Minaj has crafted her most grandiose production: a slick, vibrant beauty of staircases, tiers, towering video panels and a lengthy catwalk to allow her plenty of room to strut.

It’s a Nicki-fied Oz, a neon playground on which she and her dancers could exact the rhythms of new tracks such as “FTCU,” “Barbie Dangerous” and “Cowgirl” with style.

The fictionalized Gag City – an idea created by fans using artificial intelligence for the arrival of last year’s “Pink Friday 2” album – was brought to reality in the form of a cityscape outlined in fuchsia for some songs and black and red for others.

During the alluring Asian-themed segment offering “Chun-Li” and the percussive “Ruby Red da Sleeze,” Minaj ducked into a phone booth for a quick change – a la Clark Kent – from her hooded robe to a long, pink wig (one of many she would sport throughout the night).

Nicki Minaj loves to play with fans

Minaj is endlessly entertaining to watch. She might drop into a marionette pose in “Win Again” or grind against the stage floor and literally engage in the lyrics of “Feeling Myself.”

Her gift is to go from spitting daggers to turning coquettish and she says as much with her alluring eyes as her pointed lyrics, which her fans devour.

Those devotees – affectionately dubbed “The Barbz” – turned the arena into a sea of salmon-colored fashion, from cowgirl hats to crop tops, boots to glittery shorts.

But more than their visuals, the crowd clearly worshipped Minaj’s every movement, especially her stings that landed with a smile.

Late in the show, Minaj handed her microphone to several audience members to sing the refrain of “The Night is Still Young.” She jokingly scolded their off-key renditions with typical side eye, but broke into spontaneous gyrations and a grin when one fan instead sang, “Nicki is still young!”

Before that inspirational anthem, Minaj addressed the crowd with her usual candor.

“People want money and they want cars and they want houses … and they ain’t got no peace. So what does it mean? I’d rather peace in the projects building. ‘Cause when you’ve got peace, you can think. And when you can think, you can prosper,” she told the cheering throng.

Nicki Minaj’s concert guests are great, but slow momentum

A handful of songs into her set, Minaj rolled into “Beep Beep,” a heaping serving of drums, pyro and 50 Cent.

The superstar rapper strolled out in a white baseball cap, jeans and a sparkly blue jacket to match Minaj’s outfit of the moment for the song – featured on the deluxe version of “Pink Friday 2” – before taking over the stage during a Minaj costume change.

His smile gleaming and his spirit apparently soaring, 50 Cent steered the crowd through singalongs of several hits including “What Up Gangsta,” “P.I.M.P.” and the inevitable “In Da Club.”

His presence was certainly welcome, but, like the mid-set performance from Monica and the too-long artsy videos that segued each thematic act, it impaired the momentum of the show.

It’s gracious of Minaj to cede the spotlight to Monica for a deserved platform than mere opening act, and she indeed sounded flawless on “So Gone” and “Before You Walk Out of My Life” and looked luminous in her floor-length pink coat.

But while her set didn’t siphon attention from Minaj, it did incur a tonal shift.

Still, Minaj is the Queen of Rap for a reason, and she soon reclaimed the stage with her unbridled sass.

Travis kelce on what he's learned from taylor swift: 'don't try and be taylor', share this article.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is understandably taking every moment to celebrate his team’s back-to-back Super Bowl wins in the offseason. He’s partied in Vegas with teammates, continued his mega-popular podcast with big brother Jason and traveled the globe to see his girlfriend, Taylor Swift, perform her Eras Tour show.

MORE:   Chandler Parsons tries (and fails!) to psych out Travis Kelce by playing Taylor Swift on the golf course

Next up, Kelce is hosting Kelce Jam for the second straight year, a music festival that the three-time Super Bowl winner will once again throw in Kansas City. Kelce told The Hollywood Reporter about the event and even shared what lessons he learned from watching Swift perform more this year.

“Don’t try and be Taylor, that’s what I learned,” Kelce said in the interview . “Yeah, she’s on a whole other stratosphere. She’s the best at what she does for a reason. It’s because she’s so articulate and just very dialed into every single thing that she does. And that’s the beauty of it. I’d be silly if I ever tried to take anything from what she does, other than just enjoy the people that show up.”

Kelce Jam will take place May 18 and feature artists like Lil Wayne, Diplo and 2 Chainz.

AC Walking Tours Expand to Surrounding Communities

Stockton Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.  — The popular AC Walking Tours are back and bigger than ever in 2024 with new tours and expansion into neighborhoods around Atlantic City.

The spring tours will take place from noon to 2 p.m. on consecutive Saturdays in May. Summer tours will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on consecutive Fridays in July. Fall tours will take place from noon to 2 p.m. on consecutive Saturdays in October. All are sponsored by Stockton University’s Office of Continuing Studies and Adult Education (OCSAE).

“These fun adventures across the greater Atlantic City area provide interactive experiences in a two-hour guided tour,” said OCSAE Assistant Director Diane Strelczyk. “Our tours are designed to highlight the beauty, history and humanity of Atlantic City. Each neighborhood features a rich history and a present-day vibe. Our goal is to showcase all the interesting people, places and events Atlantic City has held, currently features and hopes to achieve.”

The tours are researched, designed and led by historian Levi Fox, an assistant professor of History at Immaculata University and former adjunct professor at Stockton.

The spring lineup begins on May 4 with Lower Chelsea, followed by Nucky’s Empire on May 11, Margate’s “The Lucy Loop” on May 18 and Historic Somers Point on May 25.

The summer lineup focuses exclusively on Atlantic City neighborhoods starting on July 5 in Upper Chelsea, followed by Ducktown Revitalization on July 12, the North Inlet and Bungalow Park on July 19 and South Inlet’s “To the Lighthouse” on July 26.

The fall lineup starts in downtown Ocean City on Oct. 5 and then moves to Atlantic City for Northside Heritage on Oct. 12, Louisa Mack’s LGBTQ+ on Oct. 19 and the History of Gaming on Oct. 26.

Strelczyk said the office is excited to offer two new Atlantic City tours: Nucky’s Empire and North Inlet and Bungalow Park. Fox will be dressed in character as infamous Atlantic City boss Enoch “Nucky” Johnson, while the North Inlet tour will discuss the historic impact of Bungalow Park and Gardner’s Basin.

“As we integrate these new tours with standard favorites, such as the Lower Chelsea and Ducktown Revitalization tours, we know everyone will get their steps in this year,” she said.

All tours are $15 per person, per tour. Participants are encouraged to bring their walking shoes, sunscreen and a water bottle, as each tour will cover two to three miles of parks, city streets and the boardwalks. Select tours will also include tours of popular local attractions like Lucy the Elephant, the Absecon Lighthouse, the Noyes Arts Garage, the Margate Historical Society and the 4th Street Life Saving Station in Ocean City.

The Ducktown Community Development Corporation, the Chelsea Economic Development Corporation and Lucy the Elephant are co-sponsors of the walking tours.

Photo of six people sitting in a small open boat look ing over their shoulders at a three-masted wooden ship overlaid on an orange graphic of a woodcut from a slave ship

‘Hidden in plain sight’: the European city tours of slavery and colonialism

From Puerta del Sol plaza in Madrid to the Tuileries Garden in Paris, guides reshape stories continent tells about itself

D odging between throngs of tourists and workers on their lunch breaks in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol plaza, we stop in front of the nearly 3-tonne statue depicting King Carlos III on a horse. Playfully nicknamed Madrid’s best mayor, Carlos III is credited with modernising the city’s lighting, sewage systems and rubbish removal.

Statue of a man on a horse on top of a plinth surrounded by multi-storey buildings

Kwame Ondo, the tour guide behind AfroIbérica Tours, offers up another, albeit lesser-known tidbit about the monarch. “He was one of the biggest slave owners of his time,” says Ondo, citing the 1,500 enslaved people he kept on the Iberian peninsula and the 18,500 others held in Spain’s colonies in the Americas. As aristocratic families sought to keep up with the monarch, the proportion of enslaved people in Madrid swelled to an estimated 4% of the population in the 1780s.

It is a nod to the kind of conversation – one often neglected or wilfully ignored across the continent – that Ondo and his counterparts in Europe are steadily wedging into everyday life. From Barcelona to Brussels, London to Lisbon, a cohort of guides has trained its lens on Black and African history, laying bare how the continent has been shaped by colonialism and slavery as they reshape the stories that Europe tells about itself. While California debates reparation bills aimed at compensating for generations of discriminatory policies, and the UK takes down tributes to slave traders and colonialists, similar conversations have been conspicuously absent across much of the continent.

“We’re not lifting up anyone’s mattresses,” says Ondo. “This is history hidden in plain sight.”

It is a statement that in some ways mirrors his own life. Born in Equatorial Guinea – the last Spanish colony to claim independence , in 1968 – he grew up in southern Spain, steeped in the culture of a former empire that had long ceased to remember its actions in what has been dubbed the “forgotten colony” of Spain.

Ondo and his family’s existence in Spain, however, acted as a powerful counter to this forgetting. “It was a conscious decision by European powers to disconnect themselves from the history,” says Ondo. “But history comes back to you.”

Eleven hundred miles away, the sentiment is echoed by Jennifer Tosch, who launched Black Heritage Tours in Amsterdam in 2013. The previous year, Tosch had arrived in the country as an international student from the US with a singular Dutch connection; with family roots that trace back to Suriname, she had family who had been living in the Netherlands for four generations.

Jennifer Tosch

Her attempts to explore this connection were futile – the result of what she describes as “wilful forgetting” or “colonial amnesia” – and convinced her of the need to bring the city’s hidden histories to the masses.

“Imagine me sitting here in courses, being told that your history wasn’t included, that you didn’t matter,” she says. “That there was nothing here for you to see that would bring you closer to an understanding about your past. It just didn’t sit right.”

As she geared up to tour visitors and locals past the gable stones that include the image of a servile, Black child and the dark-skinned figureheads with exaggerated features once used to signal pharmacies, the idea was initially met with scepticism by Dutch people of colour.

“Like: ‘No, no, there was no Black history here; no, there was no Black presence until much later’,” she says. “So questioning the notions of belonging and citizenship and identity were interwoven with my mission to prove that we belong here. And that our stories matter.”

Eleven years on, the conversation around Black history and colonialism in the Netherlands has shifted. In 2023, King Willem-Alexander apologised for his country’s role in slavery but stopped short of heeding demands for reparations, despite research suggesting his ancestors had earned the modern-day equivalent of €545m (£466m) from slavery.

The apology was a “pretty watershed moment”, says Tosch, albeit one that was carefully timed to dovetail with the growing attention being paid to this history. In other words, it was more a credit to the crucial work many had been doing to uncover the history than any royal initiative, she says.

In Berlin, this kind of shift feels a long way off, says Justice Mvemba, who founded Decolonial Tours in 2022.

The locals who take her tours are often surprised to find out that Germany’s colonial empire once ranked as the third largest in Europe. “They’ve never learned anything about Germany’s colonial past, some don’t even know that the Berlin conference happened in Berlin,” she says, citing the 1884-85 gathering in which European imperial powers wrangled for control of Africa. “I think it is also shocking to them how those colonial continuities just live among us.”

Mvemba, who was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and raised in Germany, points to a potent example: Berlin’s African quarter, conceived in the late 19th century as a place where the city could host a permanent zoo that would exhibit both wild animals and humans in order to celebrate Germany’s colonial project.

While the zoo never came about, echoes of it resurfaced more than 100 years later, when a zoo in Bavaria sought to attract visitors by creating an “African village” that included performers and artisans.

The initiative went ahead despite widespread protests by anti-discrimination groups, Mvemba says, hinting at how Germany – a country often lauded for its efforts to deal with its more-recent past – had failed to meaningfully reckon with its history of colonialism. “So really, these tours are about making people reflect and realise that we are still living those colonial biases or reproducing them,” she says.

These efforts to connect the dots between the past and present come at a critical time for the continent, says Julia Browne. In 1994, she launched Walking the Spirit Tours , leading locals and visitors to Paris through the histories of those who had enabled slavery and confronted colonialism.

“It opens another chapter in the book of exploring French history – and European as well – and facing the facts, bringing it right out in front so that people can’t deny it,” she says. “And especially at this time, when the right wing is on the rise, the voices just have to keep getting stronger and stronger.”

In countries such as Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal, far-right parties have broken through to become key players in politics. In France and Germany, nativist parties are climbing steadily up the polls, pulling mainstream parties to the right as they compete for the attention of voters.

“They have a certain rhetoric and narration that creates fear in people, creates fear of what used to be called ‘the other’. And it gives the sense that people don’t belong if they’re not of European origin,” she says. “But it’s important for the other side to be heard, that, no, this is not the truth.”

She points to Place de la Concorde, set to be showcased to the world this summer during the Olympic Games. “But what else is there? There’s a place called Hôtel de la Marine. It’s a gorgeous building that’s been renovated, but it was in there that the system of slavery and colonialism was managed,” she says, describing it as an “administrative headquarters” for the country’s colonial empire before it was written into history as the location where the decree abolishing slavery in the colonies was signed in 1848.

People walking around a pond with a garden in the foreground and multi-storey buildings in the background

Nearby, is the Tuileries Garden. “It was there that slavery in the colonies was first abolished by the National Convention, but also re-established by Napoleon,” says Browne. “If you’re a person of colour, or have origins in the islands or origins in colonial Africa, these places are part of your history.”

In Madrid, Ondo’s walking tour begins to wrap up after crossing a crowded plaza where people were once sold to the highest bidder and visiting a church teeming with tourists seemingly oblivious to the symbols linked to enslavement carved into its stone walls.

His last stop, however, is at a changing roster of African restaurants in the city centre. It’s an ending with a dual purpose: showcasing the vibrant clutch of restaurants, including Senegalese and Equatorial Guinean, that have sprung up in recent years, and reinforcing how the stories of the past continue to colour life in Madrid today.

“All this is not really a thing of the past, it’s a thing that is still going on at the moment,” he says, pointing to the power that continues to be wielded by those whose families profited from slavery, to the companies that have supplanted colonial empires in extracting resources from the global south, and the EU’s crackdown on those risking their lives to cross the Mediterranean in small boats.

“It’s a never-ending process,” Ondo says. “It’s a transformation of the same issues of 200 years ago. Projects like mine and many others kind of open up a conversation about these things.”

A local group has set up a Filipino food tour, dubbed Sobrang Sarap, with special dishes at restaurants across the Portland area timed to coincide with National Filipino Food Month.

Founded by ALIST owner and community organizer Amanda Mailey, artist and Magna Kubo general manager Beatriz Lugtu and Baon Kainan co-owner Geri Leung, the event includes 16 restaurants, food carts and pop-ups from Troutdale to Beaverton. Each restaurant will highlight one of four ingredients or dishes — ube, adobo, calamansi and pancit — per week in April.

“We were inspired by the multitude of different Filipino food items being served in Portland,” Leung said in a phone interview Monday. “When we opened Baon Kainan three years ago, it was a time when Filipino food was really starting to ramp up. We’ve seen more restaurtants, bakeries like Shop Halo Halo, Sunrice with its kiosk at the Moxy (Hotel), Justin (Dauz) popping up with Balong. It felt like the right time to show what Filipino food is all about.”

Sobrang Sarap, which translates to “very delicious” in Tagalog, is sponsored by Travel Portland and the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce of Oregon. The food tour culminates with a ticketed, family-friendly celebration from 3 to 7 p.m.on Sunday, April 28th at Kolectivo , 959 S.E. Division St.

The event highlights 16 food businesses across the Portland metro area, including Magna Kusina , Magna Kubo , Fork and Spoon , Tambayan Restaurant , Grind Wit Tryz , Sugarpine Drive-In , Hunny Beez , Baon Kainan , Makulít , Kalesa Coffee , Chik and Chuck’s Coffee , Shop Halo Halo , Sun Rice , Kalo Kitchen and Balong . Meanwhile, the Filipino Bayanihan Center will feature and stock approximately 50 portions of the featured ingredient for each of the four themed weeks in its Kalusugan Community Pantry, a weekly no-cost pantry of non-perishables and seasonal vegetables.

Beginning on April 1st, participating locations will feature a Chef Challenge dish on their menu made with one of Sobrang Sarap’s signature flavors. Week one is for ube, the purple yam often used in Filipino desserts. Week two focuses on adobo, a dish with many permutations typically including meat, seafood or vegetables marinated in vinegar, soy sauce and garlic. Week three is for calamansi, the distinctive Filipino citrus. And week four focuses on pancit, an umbrella term for a variety of noodle dishes. Chefs are given cart blanche to create any dish they desire under each ingredient’s umbrella.

Sobrang Sarap takes place throughout April at locations from Troutdale to Beaverton. Visit sarap-pdx.com for more information.
