Hi, my name is Ginger DeRay...

…and I am the owner and operator of A&A Historical Trails Stables.

I was born on a cold, stormy Feb. day in 1955 in Grand Lake, CO, where my parents operated a lodge and a pony ring by the lake. My parents eventually lost the lodge because of “paperwork.” Penniless, they moved to Aurora (east Denver) with a pony ring to start Saddle Lane Stables. I don’t remember when I first rode a horse. I do remember, however, helping my mom make ribbons from scratch… ribbons that were given away every Sunday to participants in the weekly gymkanas my parents offered. When I was 14, I left my parents, my three sisters, my two bothers, and my home in order to find my destiny. Six months later, I realized what my destiny was… it was that which I had left! So homeward bound I went with a new outlook on life and a new respect for my parents and environment.

My teenage daughter and I wanted to ride horses in the mountains during our Colorado vacation and we found this place not far from our lodgings. We went on a one hour ride as we are both veginners. Our guide was super informative and picked the perfect horses for us.

I almost didn't make it out here, but am so thankful that I did! It is difficult to access without a car, but I took a "casino" shuttle bus from downtown Denver, and Ginger, the owner picked me up at the casino! Talk about great service!

We took the cemetery ride which provided both a fantastic view up the mountains along an authentic but long abandoned mining road and a short but welcome break (for the occasional rider) to walk around the historic Russel Gulch cemetery. What a great time and experience!

After the ride, Ginger was there waiting and we helped put the horses up and all the tack. We spoke to Ginger and Barb for a little while about horses, Colorado, and life and had a great time. We will be back, can't wait to do another ride. We have ridden horses most of our lives, these horses were in great shape and eager to go at any moment. This was an amazing experience and I am very happy I booked with Academy! I searched many stables in the area and ultimately settled on taking the one hour tour. I was more than impressed. All staff is so very friendly and caring, they walk you through every instruction so you feel comfortable, they take amazing care of the horses, and best of all they don't judge your skill level. First you go through the safety and training, then they match you with a horse (which they do very well!) The guides on the trail provide a lot of geographical and historical information. Their process for safety of the tour was really easy to follow and they were very attentive to what was going on with all the horses. The views are amazing, there is no better way to see Garden of the Gods. I am so so sooooo happy I rode with Academy.

Our girls loved this tour. The views and scenery were amazing and the staff was "incredible". They are experienced riders and were hesitant to do a guided tour, as they can often drag based on others in the group. This was not the case and the trail lead kept things fun, interesting and engaging. Most importantly, they did not feel like herded cattle. Well done Academy Riding Stables.

This was definitely a good riding experience! We opted for the 2-hour ride and are so glad we did! The stables are very well-maintained and all the staff members were super friendly. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the various sites in Garden of the Gods and about the region in general. We'll be back for more!

We took the 2-hour ride option through the Garden of the Gods. The ride was a fun way to get a guided overview of the park. My wife is a very experienced rider, and I am very inexperienced - but we both had an enjoyable time. The horses seemed well cared for, and the equipment was in good shape. The park itself is stunning, and definitely a must-see if you visit Colorado Springs.

We had a wonderful time riding through Garden of the Gods. The staff was excellent and lots of fun. They pointed out all of the great sites. We ride on every vacation. This was the greatest one yet. I definitely recommend the 2 hour ride to make it worth your while. Make sure you take a ride with them.

Took our family of 4 on a 2 hour ride though Garden of the Gods, it was amazing. Highly recommend it. The trail was challenging at a couple of points but we had a 8 yr old first time rider successfully complete. You ride your own horse and get excellent instruction. The horses are well trained and cared for. The views were great in fall.

First we went to the Garden of the Gods visitor center and the traffic was crazy with nowhere to park. Good thing we’d already booked a horseback ride! This was a peaceful and unique way to view the gorgeous sandstone rock formations from a quiet trail with no crowds or traffic or parking issues. Horses were obviously very well cared for and the ones running free in the paddock behind the stable seemed quite happy. My horse was a total sweetheart and knew the terrain very well - he basically did his thing and let me enjoy the views. Great for beginners (or even people who have never ridden before - the horses are that well trained) and a cute date idea if in the CO Springs area!

This seems like a well-run operation. The staff hand-picks a horse for you based on your size and your experience. They communicate with each other and with the riders effectively. Allie and Connor were excellent guides - I was in the middle of the line, but could still hear everything Allie had to say. The two-hour tour gave me a chance to see the beautiful Garden of the Gods. I am not a regular rider, but I am always on the lookout for signs that animals are not well-cared for --didn't see any suggestions of this at ARS.

I took a two hour riding tour of the Garden of the Gods. The area was so beautiful I couldn't stop craning my neck to look around. That might have been a problem if the horse hadn't been so great! Cheyeene was easy to ride, sure footed and never showed any signs of spooking even when we passed some trail construction. My guide Kevin was friendly and knowledgable about the area. Thanks for the great time, I'll be back next year.

5 UNIQUE ADVENTURES NEAR DENVER

Colorado is the “wild west”, where riding horses, drinking beer and playing guitar are skills that come as naturally as spitting. If you already know how to do the other two, find your inner cowboy/girl and go horseback riding this summer! There are a few riding schools and stables near Denver –

12 Mile Stables  offers rides for small and large groups that range from 1-2 hour rides at $38-$68. The sunset/sunrise dinner ride is a great way to celebrate a special event and offers a classic western dinner. But there is so much more! They do Hayrides , Day Camps and Riding Lessons as well as parties and events. So if you can’t get your kid the pony they wanted for their birthday they can at least enjoy riding one!

The Denver Equestrians Riding School  offers horseback riding lessons for adults, teens and children ages 5 and up. This stable offers a  New Rider Assessment  to get a sense of how they and the horses can best serve the rider. They have camps for younger people and programs for adults that include a Horses and Happy Hour. This is a great place for the serious horse enthusiast to learn and

If riding a horse sounds like too much, perhaps riding with Irish Rose Carriages  is more your speed.  They offer year around carriage rides in Downtown Denver and themed rides around the holidays and Valentines Day. If you ask, the carriage drivers will tell you all about the gentle but enormous draft horses and perhaps a little about Denver history and lore.

2# HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE

Taking a hot air balloon ride is somewhere between terrifying and completely peaceful. Drifting above beautiful Colorado scenery with only a sturdy wicker basket between you and thousands of feet of air is unlike any other experience. Besides the occasional roar of flame that keeps the balloon afloat it is quiet and serene.

As a non-profit they depend on the generosity of the patrons and other supporters to feed the rescued animals. A great way to support them is by visiting the sanctuary and taking the time to get to know the animals. They have a unique viewing system of elevated walkways that stretch over 1.5 miles. The Mile into the Wind walkways allow the animals to roam and feel unthreatened in their territory, no matter how many visitors are gazing from above!

Take a two hour drive from Denver to the  Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center  where they offer tours to see, learn about, and interact with wolves, foxes and coyotes. To visit the wolves you must register so that the center can be ready to give you the best tour. If you are unable to make it your payment will be a donation for these endangered and majestic creatures. Before going make sure to read all the rules carefully because it is clear that no Uggs are allowed in any weather, along with fur or anything animal based. Perhaps wolves have strict sense of fashion as well as safety, so don’t even get them started on Crocs.
