'Star Trek: Resurgence' Comic Adds Depth and Scope to Highly-Anticipated Upcoming Video Game

The tie-in comic miniseries details the catastrophe which befalls the crew of the U.S.S. Resolute prior to the events of the game!

Building upon the wave of excitement for Dramatic Labs’ upcoming interactive video game , IDW is thrilled to announce the five-issue comic book prequel of the same name, STAR TREK: RESURGENCE ! Exploring the calamitous events of the U.S.S. Resolute preceding the game’s main storyline, the miniseries will be written by Andrew Grant and Dan Martin with art by Josh Hood ( Avatar: The Next Shadow, We Can Never Go Home ) and will debut in November.

On a windswept planet bordering the notoriously hostile Talarian Republic , a scientist on the cusp of developing technology that will revolutionize warp goes missing. The crew of the U.S.S. Resolute is tasked with an urgent stealth mission to recover Dr. Leah Brahms and keep her research out of enemy hands!

“I can’t wait for fans to have a truly immersive game experience on the bridge of the U.S.S. Resolute and discover the formative events that indelibly shaped the ship and crew via the comic books,” says Grant. “I’m grateful to have worked on a franchise that is genuinely hopeful about the future, that takes into consideration the needs of the many, and views diversity as a singular source of strength.”

STAR TREK: RESURGENCE #1 Cover B art by Dramatic Labs

“I really wanted to spend more time with the crew of the U.S.S. Resolute , so I’m thrilled to take fans on another adventure in this prequel comic,” says Martin. “There are some familiar faces along for the ride and as a longtime Star Trek fan myself, it’s sometimes hard to believe that I actually get to bring life to characters which I first met on TV decades ago.”

“Drawing Star Trek is a bit of a double-edged sword. The iconography is burned into the minds of so many fans that when you get something wrong—the phasers, the bridge of a starship, the comms badges—it's instantly recognizable as being wrong. But when you get it right, the entire experience of being in the 24th Century seems to slide right into place,” says Hood.

STAR TREK: RESURGENCE #1 retailer incentive variant art by Malachi Ward

“The universe is vast in the 24th Century, and any opportunity we have to explore the stories of characters that don’t always make it to the big screen gives us a freedom to do things in the comics we don’t always get to do,” says editor Heather Antos . “Combined with Dan and Andrew’s experience working on the game itself, alongside Josh’s clear love of Trek , STAR TREK: RESURGENCE is blasting off into brand-new corners of the Star Trek comics universe.”

STAR TREK: RESURGENCE #1 will be available in November with three variant covers ( above ) for fans and retailers to enjoy, including Cover A by series illustrator Hood, Cover B by Dramatic Labs , and a retailer incentive variant by Malachi Ward .

New 'Star Trek: Resurgence' comic book is a prequel to upcoming video game

Join the crew of the U.S.S. Resolute in this tie-in miniseries that reveals an earlier calamity.

On Thursday (Sept. 8), "Star Trek" fans around the globe will unite in celebration of the hope, inspiration, and promise that this storied sci-fi franchise has offered Earthlings of every stripe and persuasion since the original TV series first landed on that date in 1966.

It's a time to commemorate and share memories of visionary creator Gene Roddenberry's "Wagon Train to the Stars" and the iconic show’s premiere episode that aired back in late summer 56 years ago today.

But it's also the perfect excuse to reveal some cool new " Star Trek "-centric merchandise that helps honor the iconic franchise and its enduring legacy in all corners of pop culture.

As a companion to Dramatic Labs' upcoming "Star Trek: Resurgence" video game arriving later this year for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X/S, IDW Publishing will be offering up a tie-in companion comic book this November to bring players up to speed on the game’s backstory.

"Resurgence's" adventure-driven game narrative delivers a space-faring story set in the period following the events of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and centers around the dauntless crew aboard the starship U.S.S. Resolute in the year 2380.

IDW's new five-issue miniseries, also titled "Star Trek: Resurgence," adds a distinct measure of depth and detail to the highly-anticipated interactive game and chronicles a disaster that strikes the crew of the U.S.S. Resolute before the overarching plot of Dramatic Lab's digital amusement.

"I can't wait for fans to have a truly immersive game experience on the bridge of the U.S.S. Resolute and discover the formative events that indelibly shaped the ship and crew via the comic books," says Grant in an official IDW press release . "I'm grateful to have worked on a franchise that is genuinely hopeful about the future, that takes into consideration the needs of the many, and views diversity as a singular source of strength."

The plot begins on a desolate, windswept world that borders the particularly hostile Talarian Republic, where a genius scientist on the verge of developing technology that could revolutionize warp travel has vanished. The crew of the U.S.S. Resolute is dispatched on a secret stealth mission to locate Dr. Leah Brahms and keep her research out of nefarious hands.

"Drawing "Star Trek" is a bit of a double-edged sword," adds Hood . "The iconography is burned into the minds of so many fans that when you get something wrong — the phasers, the bridge of a starship, the comms badges — it's instantly recognizable as being wrong. But when you get it right, the entire experience of being in the 24th Century seems to slide right into place."

IDW's "Star Trek: Resurgence #1" arrives in comic shops and online outlets in November with variant covers by Dramatic Labs and Malachi Ward.

The Resolute carried at least four Type 6 shuttlecraft : the Ptarmigan ( β ), the Baffin ( β ), the Polar ( β ), and the Melville ( β ).

‘star trek resurgence’ review: live long and prosper.

Rough-around-the-edges gameplay can’t get in the way of Star Trek Resurgence’s fantastic characters and story.

Austin Manchester

Star Trek is one of the most popular media franchises around, and yet it hasn’t yet made its mark in the world of video games. Dramatic Labs , a debut developer composed of former Telltale Games developers, looks to change that with Star Trek Resurgence . It expertly captures what makes Star Trek so wonderful and lets you pilot a fantastic narrative by putting you in the uniforms of two well-crafted characters.

You start as Jara Rydek, the U.S.S. Resolute ’s new first officer. After an accident killed almost two dozen Resolute crew members a few months ago, including the former XO, Rydek enters a precarious situation. She has to earn the trust of her new crewmates, including the captain of the Resolute . Through your dialogue decisions and actions as Rydek, you’ll begin to mold what kind of character she is and how others perceive her in a way anyone who’s played a Telltale game before will be familiar with.

Her relationship with Captain Solano starts off precariously. He feels under pressure to prove himself and make up for the accident in the eyes of Starfleet command, meaning he’ll try to dictate Rydek’s actions. Depending on what you decide to do and say as Rydek, Solano will either gain trust in Rydek or question why he brought her aboard. This is a recurring plotline throughout the game, and I loved how nothing was ever cut and dry, black and white – whatever decision Rydek chose was bound to upset someone, including Captain Solano.

I won’t forget how disappointed in myself I was when I panicked on a dialogue choice and caused Ambassador Spock to express displeasure in my decision. (The game acts like Ambassador Spock joining is a big reveal, but he was included in some of the earliest marketing materials.) You’ll quickly learn that trying to keep everyone pleased is going to be impossible and instead you’ll focus on making your version of Rydek true to what you want her to be.

The plot revolves around a tenuous peace between two different civilizations, the Hotari and the Alydians. They’re in conflict over control of dilithium-rich mines, and the Federation has been brought in as a neutral third-party to oversee negotiations. That the Alydians possess a trade agreement with Starfleet only adds an intriguing layer of conflict to the proceedings. Trying to negotiate during a diplomatic mission while mysterious machinations go on behind the scenes is exactly what I’d want out of a Star Trek game, and Resurgence delivers in spades.

'Star Trek Resurgence' review: Live long and prosper

Balancing diplomacy, personal feelings, and your colleague’s goals is at the core of Resurgence ‘s choices.

You won’t play the whole game as XO Rydek, however. Petty Officer Carter Diaz is Star Trek Resurgence ’s second POV. While Rydek is on a diplomatic mission, Diaz is mainly tasked with investigating the ionic storm the Resolute has been caught in. Things aren’t as they seem, and Diaz’s discoveries are crucial to uncovering the mysteries present in the narrative. His friendship with Petty Officer Nili Edsilar and a potential romantic relationship with Petty Officer Miranda Maris are given heavy focus in his sections and are what make them so appealing.

An occasional problem with multi-POV stories is they won’t be able to please all audiences. Some people will always prefer one protagonist over another and will groan whenever they have to read, watch, or play through a section as a character that’s not their favorite. Star Trek Resurgence does as good a job as anyone at mitigating this problem by making both Rydek’s and Diaz’s POVs both so engaging and fun.

Sure, I may have preferred the more diplomatic sections as Rydek, but Diaz’s sections provided a much-needed POV that was separate from the usually bridge-focused stories. His relationships are more personal than professional, which make for great conflict throughout the game. I enjoyed role-playing as both characters and felt they were both worthy of being centered in the narrative, although I do wish Rydek and Diaz interacted together more over the course of the game. Rydek’s chapters were maybe more essential to the narrative, but the Diaz side of Star Trek Resurgence is what made it a three-dimensional tale.

'Star Trek Resurgence' review: Live long and prosper

Even in the universe of Star Trek, you never quite leave high school.

How much influence you have over the narrative is in doubt, as is the case with most games like this. Your actions won’t suddenly create a new storyline. Certain events are going to happen regardless of if you try to date Miranda as Diaz or get on your captain’s good or bad side as Rydek. I’m okay with this for I go into these types of games I view it as I’m role-playing a character within a predetermined narrative. The story isn’t for me to decide, but rather how my character(s) react is up to me. However, I do wonder if and hope that the future of choice-based games provides us more sway over the narrative as a whole and not just a character or two’s place in it.

While the main draw of Star Trek Resurgence is role-playing in the  Trek universe, you won’t just be making dialogue decisions as Resurgence packs in stealth, third-person shooting, piloting, and little minigames to break up the dialogue- and narrative-heavy game. I applaud this group of former Telltale devs for branching out of the somewhat point-and-click and QTE-laden games of the past. That said, e verything aside from shaping the narrative is clunky at best, tedious at worst. The shooting, piloting, and stealth all play subpar and are outdone by just about any other third-person action adventure game.

If you’re not a fan of some of the gameplay, thankfully none of the sections pop up too often and don’t last very long. For example, I really couldn’t stand trying to calibrate the teleporter as Diaz – struggling with the timing of a minigame really toned down the dramatic tension present. The section didn’t last long and wasn’t recurring enough to really lessen my enjoyment.

There’s a couple different cover-shooting sections that are rather rudimentary, but aren’t bad enough to seriously lessen my enjoyment of Star Trek Resurgence . Overall, I’m happy Dramatic Labs went outside their comfort zones by adding new gameplay elements, and next time – because I can’t wait to see what they do next – I’ll be expecting smoother and better gameplay.

'Star Trek Resurgence' review: Live long and prosper

Shooting is very basic, but it’s a *ahem*… bold step forward for this group of developers.

Dramatics Labs certainly delivered better graphics in Resurgence than in Telltale games of yore, but that isn’t really saying much. Resurgence isn’t technically current gen – I played the backwards compatible PlayStation 4 version on my PS5 – so it doesn’t have any of the impressive visuals we’ve come to expect over the past couple of years, even from lower budget indie games.

Characters’ hair looks straight out of 2015, some human NPCs’ faces are unblinking and undetailed, and the alien appearances lack variety. A few minor audio bugs annoyed; a couple of times voice lines would get repeated, throwing off the lip sync and cutting off the successive line prematurely. Star Trek Resurgence ‘s subpar graphics and occasional audio wonkiness amount to small annoyances and never really affected my enjoyment of the game.

Now, I should detail at this point how much of a “trekkie” I truly am. And… I’m really not. My first exposure to the franchise was the J.J. Abrams films, which I recognize aren’t true to the early philosophy of Trek , but I enjoyed nonetheless and they set the foundation for my growing fandom. I’ve enjoyed all four seasons of Discovery and am absolutely in love with Strange New Worlds .

I write all this to say that Star Trek Resurgence , I think, can appeal to all sorts of Trek fans. It’s loyal enough to the original philosophy of the franchise, one centered around diplomacy and peaceful resolutions to conflict, and tells a story that feels at home in the universe. At the same time it doesn’t heavily rely on any prior knowledge of the universe to tell its tale, and newcomers to Star Trek won’t feel lost at any point. Everything pertinent to the story is explained well and in an accessible way. I’ve seen maybe four episodes of The Next Generation , the era closest in the timeline to Star Trek Resurgence , yet I was able to understand everything in the game perfectly well.

If it’s not clear by now, I have loved my time with Star Trek Resurgence and I can’t wait to start another playthrough. Instead of “What would Pike do?” being my guiding principal, I might want to go full renegade and upset everyone. Resurgence is well worth revisiting, and – as someone who likely won’t ever pick up Tears of the Kingdom (blasphemous, I know) – Star Trek Resurgence might be my early favorite for 2023’s game of the year.

Star Trek: Resurgence review

Tkon the piss., our verdict.

Resurgence is the perfect mash-up of dramatic Star Trek storytelling and Telltale-style decision making, but with too many QTEs.

PC Gamer's got your back Our experienced team dedicates many hours to every review, to really get to the heart of what matters most to you. Find out more about how we evaluate games and hardware.

What is it? A single-player choice-driven action story set in the post-TNG era. Release date May 23, 2023 Expect to pay $39.99/£35 Developer Dramatic Labs Publisher Bruner House Reviewed on Intel i7-9700F, RTX 2070 Super, 32GB RAM Steam Deck Unverified Link Official site

"The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth" is one of Captain Picard's most iconic lines, and the team at Dramatic Labs—a bunch of self-confessed diehard Trekkies—have embodied that mantra in their Telltale-esque adventure, Star Trek: Resurgence. The story is the perfect mix of everything Star Trek and Telltale's classic choice-based narrative: silly humour, gentle moments that focus on care and affection, and dramatic phaser fights with lots of unnecessary diving around.

The Telltale formula of a strong narrative combined with morally ambiguous decision-making—and plenty of QTEs—seems to fit the Star Trek storytelling style perfectly. But Dramatic Labs offers something more: complicated puzzles, stealth sequences, time-sensitive exploration objectives, better cinematics, and an overall departure from the Telltale default of feeling like you're watching an interactive movie. Resurgence isn't an episodic tale, at least not in the traditional Telltale sense. Rather than having five distinct acts or episodes that arrive separately, you'll get to play it all at once as you swap between the two player characters, who each get their own uniquely titled episodes, much like you'd see in The Next Generation.

Star Trek: Resurgence is meant to represent roughly three full-length films and ties in nicely to the post-TNG era series and movies. It's set in 2380, right after the events of Nemesis and 16 years after the beginning of The Next Generation. Also, everyone is wearing DS9-style uniforms, so you know it's going to be good. It brings together a balanced mix of bridge crew antics—a well-established Star Trek approach—and the inspiring, comic-relief side of the lower decks, which we've seen in the newest animated series. Only, the lower decks characters become the real heroes and villains in this story, showing that wearing three pins on your uniform isn't the be-and end-all.

I have principles

Captain Solano describing an accident

...she has to make some life-altering decisions, like whether or not to commit genocide. Twice!

You switch between playing as First Officer Jara Rydek and Petty Officer Carter Diaz. Both are loyal Starfleet officers and aside from a few snide comments, there's no real option to go rogue. With Jara, you can choose to be a by-the-book type who's loyal to her captain or more of a character who plays fast and loose with the rules. She's a Kobliad, an endangered race who rely on Deuridium infusions to survive. Star Trek captains often make difficult decisions that trickle down to the rest of the crew, sometimes involving sacrifice for the greater good. Resurgence opens with that theme, with the Resolute having just been repaired after a catastrophic "malfunction" at the hands of Captain Solano. Jara joins the Resolute as an outsider and is made aware straight from the off that she'll need to work twice as hard to gain the crew's trust, but not before the captain demands absolute loyalty from her. Not being one to bend the knee on demand, I opted for a more "sure, but my loyalties are with Starfleet" approach—needless to say, the captain wasn't pleased.

The other player character, Carter, has a gentler introduction; he's part of the engineering team under Engineering Chief Chovak, an ultra-sarcastic Vulcan. He chums along with fellow petty officer Nili Edsilar, an unjoined Trill, and is a talented young engineer. I opted to keep a happy-go-lucky attitude with Carter, with the greater good vibe of Starfleet as his morality meter, although I did choose to start a romance with another officer which… well, I'll get back to that. At first, it seems his character will be the jokey one who'd find himself in sticky yet hilarious situations, but he quickly proves himself to be one hell of an officer and makes bridge-level life-or-death decisions. His is by far the more engaging and exciting storyline and without him, Resurgence would have just been another retelling of an XO making one morally grey choice after another. That being said, Jara's story is still a complicated one that challenges leadership and loyalty, and she has to make some life-altering decisions, like whether or not to commit genocide. Twice!

While Resurgence gives you the freedom to take a variety of approaches, there's no real option to play a renegade version of a Starfleet officer here. While some decisions appear more neutral or non-committal, the majority exist as canon Starfleet options—you can choose to take the advice of your fellow officers in an emergency, do exactly as your captain tells you, or you can just go your own way. Either way, Jara and Carter remain dedicated to Starfleet's principles.

Made up

An Alydian under attack in star trek resurgence

Resurgence introduces two new species: the hotari, a rocky-faced, hardy, and previously subservient species who mined on their planet's moon, Tau, and the alydians, a tall Kelpian/Kaminoan-looking species who are staunchly militaristic and who once seemed to control the hotari by forcing them to work in the mines that they technically owned. Jara and the crew of the Resolute are tasked with arbitration between the two races as they each seek control of the mines and the Dilithium within. Only, there's ancient, advanced Tkon technology and trickery at work here, and not everyone is who they say they are.

To catch you up, the Tkon is an ancient civilisation first mentioned in The Last Outpost in Season 1 of The Next Generation which, for the uninitiated, is the season with a beardless Riker who has a unique way of sitting on chairs. In it, Riker is challenged by a Tkon guardian, Portal 63, who releases the Enterprise and a Ferengi ship from its grasp once Riker defeats Portal's riddle and proves humanity's worth. The episode ends with Portal stating: "I will sleep until I'm needed again" which, for an episode that came out in 1987, was a hell of a foreshadowing.

Fortunately, it takes a little more than a bombastic side eye to put me off a Trek game.

While it's always fun to see familiar faces in Star Trek, I was very excited to see the two new species specifically created for Resurgence. Coming up with a species name is one thing, but how do you create two races that slot seamlessly into the Star Trek universe—especially when the bulk of Star Trek's alien appearances were the result of heavy use of prosthetics? In lieu of prosthetics, we've got detailed alien faces courtesy of the Unreal Engine, but while the facial animations for the Aldyians and hotari are certainly emotive and dynamic, the human faces have a big Mass Effect 1 stray eyebrow energy and everyone constantly looks mildly confused and slightly annoyed. Fortunately, it takes a little more than a bombastic side eye to put me off a Trek game. Though the final frontier can look lovely, Resurgence has a definite last-gen look and has some off-putting low-quality textures appear throughout the environments. The running animation in particular is pretty awkward, not to mention slow as hell.

With the help of a hotari, Tylas, Jara uncovers a terrible secret—the hotari discovered a Tkon artifact and used it to seize control of the mines, but not before their minds were replaced by Tkon via a process called bioforming. And now everyone's at risk of becoming a Tkon, whether they are hotari, alydian or from Starfleet. If you think this sounds a lot like the Borg and their attempts to assimilate everyone, you'd be right—the word "futile" is uttered by the Tkon host leader, Galvan, more than once.

Petty (officer) squabbles

Carter dialogue choices as he stands with Nili

Along with saving the galaxy, there are several interpersonal challenges Jara and Carter must overcome. Jara has the unenviable task of winning over her crewmates and choosing who lives, dies and gets promoted. Meanwhile, Carter gets to decide if he's going to shoot his girlfriend, put his best friend in the line of fire (several times) and make the good old Telltale-like choice of "Do I bother saving this person?" Standard Trek storytelling, then. Big decisions crop up everywhere, whether it's during a shootout or a meeting of bridge officers. In the corner, a little box with a character's face will glow grey, red or green to indicate whether they like what you said or not, and you can follow your choices from the main menu.

As it's based on the post-TNG era, you can expect many easter eggs. Spock obviously makes an entrance in his role as ambassador, setting the tone for much of the opening half, but as the plot thickens and deciding who to trust becomes more of a challenge, Resurgence transforms into a real Star Trek story. And by a real story, I obviously mean it features a cameo from Jonathan Frakes, who reprises his role as Commander Riker, except he's captain of the Titan now as per the canon. I also got to throw in a cheeky "Engage!" when commanding the helm to take flight and you'll issue that command any time you're in charge of the Resolute, which obviously made the Trekkie in me very happy.

Push the button

an in-game quick time event

What lets Resurgence down is the overuse of QTEs. In some sections, you'll be absolutely bombarded with them every few steps you take, and a lot of them are incredibly mundane, like simply pressing a button. And when a failure leads to a game over screen, you'll have to replay the entire section again, without the ability to even skip dialogue. While the QTEs undeniably add more tension, even when simply climbing a ladder, I would have liked the opportunity to do a little more wandering around. The phaser battle scenes had clunky controls, but if you keep dying like I did, you have the option to play in story mode which negates any damage, which was a welcome relief. Not every failed QTE results in a game over, though, as I learned during a few crucial moments, where I had to live with the consequences of my indecision.

In saying that, there's an exciting mix of dialogue choices, QTEs, transporter puzzles, shuttle flying and the phaser fights are quite arcade-like, but they are all a bit janky. The shuttle flying is boring and a little too simplistic, with a laborious flying through the ring sequence. Trying to aim with the phaser during shootouts was also a pain, thanks to the sluggish controls. There is no option to adjust the mouse or controller sensitivity and, all too often, panning the screen or aiming was too slow and time-consuming. The stealth sequences, however, are actually a lot of fun, and progression is saved at the right points so there were fewer do-overs—I'm looking at you, Hogwarts Legacy's forbidden section of the library.

While Star Trek often has a superb musical accompaniment, Resurgence's soundtrack leaves something to be desired—it sounds a lot like midi tracks you'd find on a mid-2000s mobile phone, which is a bit of a disconnect from the usual orchestral backing from the shows and films. It did get a little frustrating hearing the same melodies on repeat as I had to redo failed sections, but that says more about me needing to get good at games than it does about whoever wrote the score.

Captain Riker in the ready room

Disappointingly, there are no real options to set up Resurgence to your own liking. There are no accessibility options—not even sensitivity as I mentioned—and screen resolution options are extremely limited. There's no option to rebind controls or turn off the motion blur which, at times, gave me a little motion sickness at times, and neither is there an option to unlock frame rate. While past Telltale games also had this lack of personalisation and accessibility options, it's frustrating to see that Dramatic Labs chose not to include these as it would have made the experience that much better.

The complement of the USS Resolute may not be the finest crew in Starfleet—not when Captain Riker is out there commanding the Titan—but Carter especially is now one of my most-loved Trek characters. It would have been easy to have you roleplaying as a well-established captain or officer, but in focusing on new characters and lower decks antics, Dramatic Labs have created something special. Resurgence takes the best of Telltale's flavour, makes it better and smashes it together with an excellent Star Trek story to create something that's fresh. Yes, characters unavoidably die and the story takes a few hours to really take off, but it's worth it—I haven't cried as much at a Star Trek story since Data sacrificed himself in Nemesis, so read into that what you will.

One and done or continued content?

The site appears to state no micro-transactions or DLC, but I’m curious if there are any plans to add new missions (free or pay) or if that isn’t really something being considered at this time. I’m enjoying this game and would be interested in further missions.

Hopefully things are going well enough that another game in this series will be released! Whether that be a sequel, prequel, or independent story.

I doubt anything will be added to Resurgence, but I’m sure there are plans already in place for another game if this one does well.

Maybe, or maybe a sequel to Resurgence will focus on the Resolute and it’s characters again? They had their own comic after all, so there’s obviously some investment in them.

One would assume Dramatic Labs have a long term plan in mind and making this into a semi regular franchise. They didn’t just convince Paramount to give them the license for just one game, surely. And the Prequel comic would get the characters out there to others who may not have known the game was a thing.

I’m really hoping there’s a continuation of some sort. I’d like to see more of the Resolute but also wouldn’t mind a totally different story. Either way these are the types of Star Trek games I’ve always wanted and I’d love it if the team could continue making them!

I was thinking last night that it’d cool if this was an anthology series, and hopped around different parts of ST history. Say something set just after TUC or an Enterprise-C game. But as this is a new studio, I imagine it’d keep costs down if any potential new game was a direct sequel to this one. They could just reuse assets they already have.

I am saluting the game devs, CBS and Paramount, for allowing this game to happen and be completed. In my book, those who all agreed to this project (game) and backed it are geniuses. Is it a shame it has taken so long to combine the Star Trek universe and Narrative gameplay where choices matter into a finished product.; especially considering “Quantic Dream” (which was founded 26 years ago ) has been making games of a similar style.

I honestly would pay to see more narrative Star Trek Games, and if I ever got a big win on a lottery; give some of the winnings as an investor into developing more titles.

I agree - i hope we do get more episodes of Star Trek - there are so many possibilities for the story. Maybe we meet the borg someday or Q.

Honestly, I think I’d prefer it more if they did the same again in choosing their villains. The Tkon appeared in one episode out of like 800, and Dramatic Labs really fleshed them out here. And it doesn’t require non fans to be worried about knowing every little detail. Maybe they could do something with the Kelvans or the First Federation next time?

That being said, Q or a Q would be well suited to a narrative game. They’re big on asking awkward questions narrative games like to ask of us!

Hopefully another story. Or several. This has so far been really well done, and I am digging the way crew interactions work. Not to mention the crew themselves.

I really like the story as well. The story ends in a good spot to continue your voyage. You just make captain and now you should continue your story with your ship. Or they could go the other way and do a prequel where you’re on the Endeavor. Whatever they do it would be nice if your choices add up and affect any future games in this series. I would really enjoy that.

What really impressed me is how involved I felt with some of my decisions. I was literally holding my breath when I accused the captain.

:joy:

You would love the old game BORG if they would ever remaster it to work on newer systems. You can still get it with a DOSBox type emulator to play, but it starred both the Borg and Q and it was a challenging, sometimes frustrating, narrative game that used FMV gameplay and played like the old Dragon’s Lair where you would enter a situation and had to make quick decisions where to go or die and reset the room. I still have the original discs, but sadly they won’t work on new systems so you have to use a PC emulator on a PC lol.

Yep, played it many times. I even have the “movie” a fan made stringing together all the video scenes. Fun stuff.

What you say about still having the original discs rings true about another discussion from a few weeks ago, about if this could ever come to physical media. Telltale went bust before I ever got their final two Walking Dead and Guardians of the Galaxy games, so they’ve been out of my reach for over five years. Just happened to be in a secondhand store last week, and what three games did I find on disc? So I’d still love to have Resurgence on disc, if only for us fans to be able to preserve the game should Dramatic Labs ever go the same was as Telltale did. As it is, I’m just leaving it on my PS5 forever and ever, just in case.

I never played the Borg game, but I did have the audio cassette version of the Klingon game when I was a kid! Doubt we’ll ever see it remastered or rereleased, but you never know. I know some of the old Interplay games were put on some service maybe a year or two ago?

This guy has edited some of the Borg footage into this, and it’s very impressive to see it intercut with the footage from TNG and DS9.
