Baratang is the home to the Jarawa tribes who are the major inhabitants of this island following the few Ranchi settlers.

The major attractions at Baratang are The Limestone Caves and Mud Volcano. There is another delightful place to see in Baratang that is Parrot Island. But one has to stay back for the night at Baratang to visit Parrot Island. We’ll show more detailing on getting to this place in our coming sections of the article.

1. Shared Trips To Baratang

By Government Bus

There are shared trips in Govt NON AC Buses. They start from Port Blair early in the morning. These buses, go further from Baratang to North and Middle Andamans, may not return to Port Blair on the same day. So you have to take a different bus from the Baratang Bus terminus to return on the same day. This is the most economical mode to reach Baratang. However, the con here is that these buses do not pick you from your place. You have to board the bus either from the main Bus terminus or at some designated point on the ATR (Andaman Grand Trunk Road) where the bus may make pit stops. You have to book the seats for these buses in advance from the Govt. Bus terminus and confirm your pick up point with them only.

By Private AC Coaches

Just like the Govt Bus, the private buses also start from Port Blair early in the morning. Being AC Coaches, it is understood that it is slightly expensive than the government buses. But the additional cost is always worth the comfort. There are also special coaches available who go on a day trip to Baratang and come back on the same day. These coaches also need to be pre-booked and like the government buses, these private coaches also do not pick you from your accommodation place. You have to be board the bus either from the starting point of the bus as mentioned on the tickets or somewhere on the ATR where the bus may make pit stops. In this case, you have to confirm with the bus operators or the concerned travel agency to check that which is the nearest point from where you can board the bus.

2. By Private Cabs

If you are looking for a private as well as comfortable journey, then taking cabs for going from Port Blair to Baratang will be the best option and for obvious reasons, it’ll be a little expensive than the shared trips option. After a few kilometers from Port Blair when you leave the city behind you, and the journey amidst the forest starts, the road towards Jirkatang is quite bumpy for about an hour or more. So a bus journey is not normally preferred. The AC Coaches or tempo travelers may be an option but not those which ply regularly for Baratang. You can book a private cab based on the numbers you are traveling in. The cabs are generally 5-7 seated you can go for Tempo travelers if your group size is 15 or above. You can contact us to get this trip arranged for you or get this arrangement added to your itinerary.

3. By Government ferry from Port Blair

Government ferry services are available from Port Blair to Baratang but this ferry doesn’t come back to Port Blair on the same day. So it is not suitable for a day trip. The route of this ferry is such that it sails from Port Blair to Baratang, drops the passengers at Baratang and goes off to Havelock (No waiting time- just touch and go). In case you have a plan to stay at Baratang Island, then you may opt for this option. However, you cannot combine the ferry & cab service, this may become expensive for you. The other way is to return from Baratang in a Government Operate but. However, its uncertain because the availability of Government buses will be known only after reaching Baratang. Hence, such a last-minute surprise can spoil the rest of your trip if you are on a fixed duration holiday.

The best and the most convenient way is to avail private cab to Baratang Island. Though buses are also a good option. However, considering the pick up of bus takes places only from designated areas we personally recommend cabs to Baratang Island from Port Blair.

Best time to visit Baratang Island

Winter (October to February): With negligible rainfall and relaxed sea waters, winter is the best season of the year to pay a visit to Baratang Island. When the waters are calm and composed, many adventurous activities such as snorkeling, sea walking, scuba diving, and canoeing can be practiced with ease. Along with the descent in rainfall, the climate also turns pleasing and refreshing. Winter season experiences a dip in temperatures, with them hovering somewhere between 20°C and 26°C. Visitors will feel extreme comfort while visiting the tourist spots during this time of the year. It is a perfect time to bask in the alluring glory of this heavenly island.

Get in [ edit ]

It is about 90 km away from Port Blair . Regular bus services are available from STS Bus Terminal, Aberdeen Bazar. Journey takes about 2 hrs and 30 minutes from Port Blair to Middle Strait and the fare is just ₹45. The journey is in 2 phases - P.Blair to Jirkatang (40 km, 1 hr 15 mins) and then Jirkatang to Baratang (49 km, 1 hr 15 mins, no overtake zone through Jarwa Reserve Forest). From Nilambur Jetty at middle strait ferry

baratang tour by bus

services are available for Baratang Island. Ferry fare is only ₹3/- and it takes about 15 minutes to reach Baratang from Nilambur Jetty.

It is advisable to take a conducted tour of the Baratang islands, if you want to return on the same day. In that case you will miss seeing Parrot Islands. Once you start from Port Blair early morning at around 04:00, the first halt is at Jirkatang (40 km from Port Blair on road). At Jirkatang you will get a forest/police check post.

baratang tour by bus

Just opposite to the check post on the other side of the road is a temple (just for a landmark).

baratang tour by bus

From here starts a stretch of 49 km forest (Jarwah Reserve Forest), where you cannot halt your vehicle or walk on foot or take snaps/video. On the other end of the Jarwah Reserve forest is Middle strait jetty. The jetty will take you to the other side of the strait in about 15 minutes. Here you have reached Baratang islands.

This is one of the most exciting part of journey, where you will see the tribes (Jarwah). They are short height, black in complexion, with reddish eyes. They feed on roasted pig meat mainly. Fish and fruits being the other part of their diet. The Government of India has taken every step to ensure that no one interferes with the Jarwahs' freedom. Offering food items to Zarawah is strictly prohibited; once when they were offered food (generally fried and spicy as other Indians normally eat), some of the people in the tribe started dying. The Forest Department (Andaman Adi Janjati Samiti) also provides them with clothes. On your way to Middle strait jetty you might still find a lot of people among the tribes, particularly young men, asking for food. Please do not pay any heed. Always speak to your driver before doing anything.

Interacting with the Jarwahs is strictly prohibited as is taking photos of them. There are stories as well as facts of tribes attacking tourists/convoys with bows and arrows and harassing trespassers. So please keep away from them and enjoy the experience.

The vehicles have to leave in convoys. There are 8 convoy throughout the day from Jirkatang (6:30, 07:00, 07:30, 08:00, 09:30, 11:30, 13:30, 14:30). So please take care of the timings. You cannot cross the forest unless you are in one of the convoys. At Jirkatang check post there is a toilet/bathroom with all facilities. So if you have left from you hotel/lodge at around 04:00 you will reach there by 05:15 and you can get fresh and alight your bus/vehicle by 06:30 before the 1st convoy leaves for Baratang. In the convoy 2 wheelers/bicycles are not allowed. Only 4 wheelers are allowed. The 1st vehicle in the convoy is always a bus, with 1-2 armed policemen. And the Jarwahs fear the forest police. It is simply amazing to see how two worlds (civilised and uncivilised) coexist in this reserve forest with some amount of discipline. Hats off to the Andaman Adi Janjati Samiti.

This is the only road connecting to North Andaman to places like Kadamtala (28 km from Baratang jetty), Rangat (71 km from Baratang jetty), Mayabunder (141 km from Baratang jetty), Diglipur (203 km from Baratang jetty). Here it is interesting to see how buses/vehicles alight the jetty to reach either side of the middle strait.

which is about 4 km away from the jetty. To reach there you can hire a shared taxi @ ₹20/- per head to and fro. From Baratang, regular boat services are available for Limestone Caves . These ancient caves are located about 50 minutes (by sea) away from Baratang Jetty. The fare of boat is ₹200/- per head for both ways. It includes speed boat fare also which is required to reach Limestone Caves. The boat journey through the heart of dense mangrove forest is simply breathtaking. The boat ride here is a lifetime experience for some. Its something you get to see only in channels like NatGeo or Discovery otherwise. At the limestone caves remember to carry a torchlight, its very dark inside.

Another must-see attraction is Parrot Island . The experience at Parrot Island at sunset, when all the parrots are returning home is indeed a mesmerizing experience. For this a night's stay is required at Baratang.

Itineraries [ edit ]

Some points to note :

  • Do not waste time in visiting everything what the locals – other tourists – travel guide trumpets. Covering each of the points is a long journey either by boat or road – in whichever the case the journey can be extremely time and energy consuming.
  • The places like limestone caves, mud volcano are boring and disappointing. Unless you have specific interest in it, do not bother to waste a long day which would start at 03:40 while you plan to visit these two places.

At the same time visiting Baratang can be more memorable if the trip is taken with a night stay at Baratang. The early morning journey which generally starts at 03:40 in the morning can easily be avoided. The main reason for any tourist opting for the early morning hectic trip is only because of improper guidance from the Port Blair tour operators. There are regular bus services to Baratang. Book your seat in any bus with your convenient timings and visit Baratang Island. APWD guest House, Forest guest House and Panchayat Guest house are some of the places for the night halt. The only good private property at Baratang is Dew Dale Resorts. By doing so you can also add Parrot Island trip at Baratang in your itinerary, which is really a breathtaking experience. Do visit Baratang Island which is one of the most beautiful parts of Andaman & Nicobar Islands but only with a night halt to avoid the hectic 03:40 trips.

How to reach?

The best way to reach Baratang is by road from Port Blair. Although recently the government has started ferry services from Port Blair it is not very reliable.

Convoy timings and Jarawa area rules

The vehicles pass the Jarawa area in a convoy for safety. The first convoy leaves Jirkatang's check post at 6 am. It is advised to go to Baratang in the first convoy so that you can get sufficient time to visit the limestone caves. To get the first convoy from Jirkatang's at 6 am one needs to leave Port Blair by 3.30 am as there are other formalities to be done at the check post.

5-1.png

Strict rules are to be followed while passing through the Jarawa area. The vehicle is not to be stopped in between and interacting with the Jarawa tribes is a punishable offense. For your safety please keep the windows closed during the journey.

What to see?

The main attraction of the Baratang Islands is the limestone caves and the boat ride to the caves through the mangroves. Also, the car driving through the forest is amazing. Those interested may also hire a jeep to visit the mud volcano.

7.png

What to do?

There are no other activities to be done in Baratang apart from visiting the limestone caves and the mud volcano. Those going to Diglipur or willing to do an overnight stay can visit Parrot island in the evening.

4.png

What to eat?

Before you start your convoy journey from Jirkatang's, make sure to finish your breakfast in the numerous roadside eateries near the check post. This will save your time in Baratang. For lunch, you may choose the food vendors and the small shacks near the jetty for Thalis and basic food. Those guests who have complimentary breakfast in their package are advised to take a packed breakfast from the hotel the previous night.

What you should not miss

Do not miss the boat ride from the Baratang jetty to the limestone caves.

What you can skip

In case you are hard-pressed for time or have senior citizens with you, you may skip the mud volcano.

Ideal for families and youths. Since there is a trekking of 1.5 km to the cave it is not advisable for senior citizens who have problems walking.

Disclaimer:

Discover Andaman Holidays do not conduct or encourage tours to the Jarawa areas. Tourists should understand that interacting, giving food, and even stopping their vehicles in the Jarawa area is a punishable offense.

Travel Guide to Baratang Island

Travel Guide to Baratang Island

Baratang Island, also known as Ranchiwalas Island, belongs to the North and Middle Andaman administrative district, almost 150 kms away from Port Blair. It is the gateway to the north from Port Blair and is counted amongst one of the main islands of the group, closely situated near the archipelago in the Bay of Bengal that adjoins the Andaman Sea. This magnificent island of an area of 243 square kilometres has some wonderful geographical features such as marvellous mangrove creeks and startling limestone caves. Famous in Andaman for giving a one day enriching experience, this Island has some of the distinct features too like the only mud volcanoes found in India. Baratang Island is still unexplored and untouched which is why it is not commercialised and has almost negligible tourists’ facilities such as luxury hotels and resorts like other islands of Andaman, which is an added advantage to this island. But, there is availability of private accommodation along with Forest and PWD guest houses that need permits accordingly. The blues and hues amalgamate here on this island, turning your journey memorable with endless snaps and unexplained beautiful views. The classic rustic scenery of villagers and tribal inhabitants is a treat to the city people to get to live their lifestyle and embrace their customs and traditions. On your way to this island, if you are lucky enough then you may spot the Jarawa tribes on your commutation from Jirkatang to Middle Strait, especially when you’ll go through by Great Andaman Trunk Road. The untarnished beauty of this island separates it from the rest of the islands and maintains its position as a popular destination for tourists even without some exotic and extravagant facilities. Since human safaris are banned in this island as per the orders of Supreme Court to maintain and decrease the exploitations of the tribes, this place feels much more connected to nature and its glory. The mangrove boat ride would entice your heart strings and the local Indian cuisine would please your tummy while you lose yourself in the aura of Baratang Island. Best Time to Visit Baratang Island: This island allures the tourists throughout the year but the best time to visit is from November to February. The calm sea during these month provide the best environment to experience the available water sports and go trekking in the undulation trails, and witness the awe of nature in its lap. The weather during these months is the most suitable to experience the USPs of this island to the fullest. It is generally advisable to avoid the visit during the monsoon season to avoid risk and travel hindrances. It is also advisable to wear light cotton clothes along with comfortable shoes because this island requires a lot of walking. How to Reach Baratang Island: Great Andaman Trunk Road is the path that leads you to Baratang Island from Port Blair. The duration of travel from Port Blair to Middle Strait is approx. 2.5 to 3 hours which is divided into two parts- from Port Blair to Jirkatang and then from Jirkatang to Bartang Island. It is important to note that two-wheelers are not permissible and thus, small four wheelers are the only option available to visit Baratang Island. The undulating topography may cause a little travel sickness but the scenic outdoors will woo your heart with ample of awe-striking natural beauty. You may also track Jawara tribe on your way along the roadside. The types of transportation available for travelling are government bus from the STS Bus Terminal at Aberdeen Bazaar, private bus from Mohanpura Bus Terminal, taxi/ cabs from Veer Savarkar Airport and jetty from the Nilambur Jetty. Government Bus: If you are willing to save out on travelling cost then you must consider taking a government bus from Port Blair from the STS Bus Terminal at Aberdeen Bazaar. These buses offers shared trips and aren’t equipped with air conditioners. The starting point of these buses is in the morning from Port Blair which covers Baratang Island, North and Middle Andamans. There is a possibility that the bus do not take a return trip to Port Blair on the same day so be prepared well in advance to board adifferent bus if you wish to return to Port Blair on the same day from Baratang. The only disadvantage of choosing government bus is that it does not pick you up from your location and hence, you would have to board it wither from the main Bus terminus or from some bus stops on the Andaman Grand Trunk Road. Thus, make sure you book your tickets will in advance and take a confirmation before you head towards Baratang Island. Private Bus: These buses also start from Port Blair in the morning itself. They are well equipped with air conditioner because of which its fare is a bit more expensive as compared to that of the government buses. But if you want to ease your travel experience then you should try it out before giving it a second thought. In these buses, there is also the facility of special coaches for the one day Baratang trippers which have to be pre-booked. Like the government buses, these buses also do not cater the facility to pick you up from your location and hence, have to board it from a specific location as per the tickets and the nearest boarding location or from some bus stops on the Andaman Grand Trunk Road. Government Ferry: Nilambur Jetty is the place from where you get a jetty to Baratang. The government and private buses can take you from Port Blair to this jetty. The ferry fare is very reasonable as it is government operated and takes only about 15 minutes to reach Baratang  which could be a time saver. The only problem is that this ferry doesn’t come back to Port Blair on the same day making it less preferred for the travel option for a one day trip. After this ferry drops the passengers at Baratang Island, it leaves for Havelock Island ( Swaraj Dweep ). Private taxis/ cabs: This could be a more expensive yet an altogether comfortable experience for you as you make your way from Port Blair to Baratang Island. It is considered as a good option for the ones who are more prone to motion sickness because the bumpy rides can spoil your entire mood if not taken care of the health while travelling. A private cab/ taxi can be booked as per the number of passengers so if you are travelling with a small group, cabs/taxis which are generally 5-7 seater can do but if it’s a comparatively larger group then you can go for Tempo travellers. Transportation of Baratang Island: It is comparatively easy to travel in the Baratang Island than travelling to this island from Port Blair. There are various options available depending upon the number of people and individual convenience. Some different modes of transportation can be listed as: Private Jeeps- These can take you to places like Mud Volcano from the Baratang Jetty. Government Bus – It can give you a ride to sightseeing spots such as Mud Volcano and Baludera Beach. Private Cars- The private cars or taxis can give you a one-time solution for all the travel matters on this island; from Port Blair to Baratang, around the island and then back. It is important to note that scooter or bike rentals are not available on this Island and also, auto-rickshaws are also nowhere to be accessible on Baratang Island. Duration of Stay in Baratang Island:

This tropical island unleashes one of the most treasurable attractions such as Limestone Caves, Mud Volcano, and Parrot Island. Most of the island can be covered in 2 days maximum but if you are time bounded then it is advisable to cover the major spots and make it a one day trip to satisfy your adventure hunger. Baratang Island is technically not a destination to take accommodation because of the inadequate stay facilities. Since there are only three guesthouses – APWD Guest House, Forest Guest House and Panchayat Guest House – and a private resort, Dew Dale, it is difficult to accommodate tourists and thus, may lead to an uneasy environment. Also, for night halt, a special permit is needed from the UT Administration. People of Baratang Island: According to the 2011 census of India, the Island has 5691 inhabitants. There are a twelve villages in Baratang in which the most popular ones namely are Adazig, Sunderghar, Nayaghar and Nilambur(HQ).The people residing in this location have a long history dating back to the late nineteenth century when the city of Ranchi was under political upheaval. The locals escaped and took refuge by converting themselves to Christianity who were further commanded to move to the forests of Andaman and Nicobar islands by the Britishers. They would great agriculture opportunity in Baratang Island so they stayed back here to cultivate crops. Since then, this Island is also the home to those refugees and their heirs along with Jarawa tribe who have their settlements along the Great Andaman Trunk Road, particularly in the Jarawa Tribe Reserve region. Make sure you do not intrude their privacy or interact with them, as it could lead to fine and imprisonment. Also, offering food or any objects and clicking their individual pictures or selfies is also prohibited by the Andaman administration. Language of Baratang Island: Most people know Hindi but they are not well versed with English. Since, this location is not a typical tourist destination, the lack of commercialisation has proven to be a drawback in term of language and communication. READ MORE ABOUT OUR SERVICE

Baratang island:.

Baratang Island is in the middle of North and Middle Andaman. At a distance of 92km from Port Blair, it is known as a getaway to Middle and North Andaman. Baratang Island is also known as Ranchiwalas Island once after the Ranchi settlers that moved here close to early 19th Century. In Baratang one can see Andaman’s dense tropical forest, Limestone Caves, experience Mangrove ride, Mud volcano and Parrot Island. Each of these places is filled with unique experience which you cannot witness anywhere else in Andaman.

How to reach ?

Baratang is 92 km from Port Blair and it can be reached by ATR(Andaman trunk road) connecting Rangat and Mayabunder. Government Bus services from Aberdeen Bazaar operate on daily basis and the journey take a minimum of 4 hrs. Ticket booking has to be done before as availability can be an issue. There is a major issue with transport is that one has to follow time restraint trip because if you miss out on bus back to Port Blair there is no other way one can return to Port Blair. The most reliable way is hiring a private vehicle. Let me explain why.

The trip to Baratang is not a straight road. It normally starts early morning at 3:00 am or 6:00 am depending on which convey get you prefer taking. From the hotel and the vehicle drives straight to Jirkatang. In Jirkatang there is a gate which stops the traffic to flow any further. All the vehicle, buses and coaches stop here and are not allowed to go any further. There travellers are to fill a mandatory convoy form for entering the Buffer Zone. Convey Form requires particulars of all the traveling visitors along with cab and driver details. The convoy gate opens only quadruple time a day. The gate opens at 0600hrs, 0900hrs, 1200hrs and 1500 hrs only from Jirkatang for onwards journey towards Baratang and 0630hrs, 0930hrs, 1230hrs and 1530hrs only for return journey back to Port Blair.

Packed breakfast is always recommended for the visitors however local flavors can be tried at both the transit halt i.e. Jirkatang and Baratang. All local hotels have package breakfast facilities for visitors traveling early in the morning. When the convey gate opens all the vehicles entre the Buffer zone/ Jarawa Reserve Forest. Here vehicles follow one after the other in a convoy hence the name of the convoy gate. No overtaking is allowed in this convey and speed limit is set to maximum of 40 kmph. After traveling not less than 1 hrs 30 min visitors reach the second transit halt point, Middle Strait. From here day farers have to leave their vehicle and embark a special ferry, the local here call it Vehicle Ferry. For the onward commuter to North Andaman all the vehicle in the same order of arrival embark this Ferry turn by turn and drop to other side of the island which is Nilambur Jetty in Baratang. The Charges for the vehicle ferry is INR 10.00 per person per sector and for vehicle is INR 115.00 which is fixed time to time by Andaman Administration. Once in Baratang, there are shacks and bistro offering breakfast and meals for commuters. From there visitors have to procure speedboat tickets and Forest clearance/Permit for visiting Limestone cave via mangrove ride. The speedboat ticket costs INR 700.00 per person with forest permit which is again fixed time to time by boat association of Baratang.

This speedboats ride of half and hours takes visitor to Limestone cave through endangered mangrove forest. This mangrove forest can be witness only in two places in the world and the only one in our country. Apart from Baratang, this can only be seen in Sundar ban, Bangladesh. Mangroves are generally those trees which grow near shoreline or brackish water and act as natural break water to prevent soil erosion. The speedboat ride takes visitors to Nayadera Jetty from there one has to trek one and half kilometer through tropical forest to see the limestone caves. There are eco-huts made by forest department for commuter to relax. The limestone cave is a mere replica of New Yorks Limestone Caves, as locally said. Pre Tsunami the cave used to be much bigger than now. Once in Limestone cave one can witness gradual deposit of many ingredients such as marine life, shells, Skeleton and Corals.

Mud Volcano: The only known examples of Mud Volcano of India are found in Baratang and Dilgipur. It is about 4 km from Nilambur Jetty. This volcano erupts muds.

Parrot Island: This small uninhabited island is 30min from Nilambur jetty, is home to thousands of parrots. For the onlooker this island would seem like a perfectly trimmed hedge, which is mysterious done and maintained by these groups of inhabiting parrots. The best time to visit this island is in the dusk or the dawn. One can see the parrots dancing down in different groups making a way to their nest making a view mesmerizing for the onlookers and perfect for photographers. Words cannot express this feel it has to be witnessed.

How to Reach Baratang

Table of content, how to reach baratang.

The best way to reach Baratang is by taking a government bus, a private AC bus, or by hiring a private vehicle/car. Two-wheelers are not allowed. You will have to travel through the ‘Andaman Trunk Road’ (ATR) and move in a convoy with occasional short ferry connections among the islands. This is a four-hour bumpy ride but the lush jungles and blue waters can make the ride quite interesting.

One point to note here is that one can spot a few Jarawas on the way. The ATR cuts through the jungle that is home to the indigenous Jarawa tribe and many tribals people wait on the sides of the road to cross to the other side. Interacting with them, giving them food, gifts, or even clicking their pictures is NOT allowed. One can be fined and imprisoned for the same.

Ross Island is ideally a two part trip, the morning to evening portion includes going around the island looking at the ruins from the era of the British and Japanese rule. the late evening portion includes a spectacular sound, light & video show (yes you read it correctly!!) which has been created specially for Ross island by Revathi (the actress)

This is a over hyped, and not worth the time and money spent to reach here. It used to be called the “Paris of the East” when the British settled here. But everything is destroyed now.

The only good place here is a beach that is on the other side. You will need to climb down and up a lot of steps to get there.

It was a perfect location for family fun, the erstwhile Ross Island has all the history of a mini Paris, albeit at the cost of all Indian labour and is an example of the British opulence over poverty stricken India. Perfect for taking pics and the picturesque light house was delightful. We took the buggy as we were a large family with kids. There are deer and peacocks too.
