What is Cyprus’s plan to improve its beaches by 2024?

Cyprus aims to enhance its beaches’ quality and appeal by 2024, focusing on environmental standards, plastic pollution reduction, and improved accessibility. The tourism ministry’s initiatives include aligning with the Blue Flag programme, supporting the ‘Sand and Sea plastic-free initiative’, and upgrading beach amenities and infrastructure for a comprehensive, sustainable tourism development.

Enhancing the Coastal Charm

Cyprus is synonymous with picturesque coastlines and pristine sandy shores. Recognizing this, the island’s tourism ministry revealed a new initiative designed to enhance both the quality and visual appeal of the beaches by 2024. With a clear objective to support the local authorities in their quest for coastal beauty, the plan promises to infuse new life into the beloved seaside destinations.

In a statement that emphasized the pivotal role of beaches in Cyprus’s tourism sector, the ministry highlighted these natural assets as some of Europe’s most cherished. The announcement conveyed a vision of beaches that are not only destinations for relaxation but also pillars of sustainable tourism.

Blue Flag and Beyond

The Blue Flag programme, internationally acclaimed for its rigorous environmental and safety standards, has found a fervent supporter in the tourism ministry. As the national coordinator, the ministry’s role is pivotal in ensuring that beaches across Cyprus meet these esteemed criteria.

In tandem with global environmental efforts, the ministry backs the ‘Sand and Sea plastic-free initiative’, which aligns with a broader commitment to reducing plastic pollution and safeguarding marine life. These initiatives are cornerstones in the overarching Tourism Strategy 2030, a comprehensive plan that sets the stage for sustainable growth and development in the sector.

Accessibility and Amenities

Understanding that quality infrastructure is essential for a top-tier beach experience, the ministry’s plan covers a wide scope of enhancements. These range from the basics, like the procurement of new beach gear, to more extensive infrastructure projects. Notably, the improvement of facilities for individuals with disabilities is a testament to Cyprus’s inclusive approach to tourism development.

Local authorities, which encompass municipalities and community councils, are poised to benefit from this scheme. They are encouraged to modernize facilities with amenities such as contemporary changing rooms and sanitary facilities, ensuring a comfortable experience for all beachgoers.

Submission and Support

The deadline for the submission of applications is March 29, 2024, a date set to guarantee ample time for thorough planning and execution. Prospective participants can submit their applications electronically, streamlining the process and fostering efficiency.

Further details, including the official plan and application guidelines, are available through the Ministry of Tourism’s website. For personalized assistance, officials Vakis Loizides and Anthi Charalambous are available to field questions and provide insights into the application process.

This initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing Cyprus’s natural allure, making the island’s beaches not just destinations for sun-seeking tourists but also paragons of sustainability and inclusive leisure.

Airbnb a new trend in Cyprus, says Tourism Ministry official

08:05 - 21 February 2024

cyprus tourism ministry

The use of self-catering accommodation by tourists (Airbnb) is a new trend in Cyprus, Marios Tsianakas, Tourism Officer at the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, has told the Cyprus News Agency, noting that there has been an increase in their number in recent years.

"We passed 6,700 in accommodation units and we exceed 30,000 in terms of beds," he added, speaking on 20 February.

This is a trend also developing in Europe by younger generations who want to plan their trips more flexibly alongside lower accommodation costs, he stressed.

It is a market, he noted, which is putting together cheap flights with relatively lower prices on accommodation.

"They make a good contribution to the local economy as people who chose these accommodations use several services such as restaurants, transport, car rental, etc.," he added.

Koumis says sports tourism vital to Cyprus tourist industry

T he significant contribution of sports tourism to the tourism economy of the country is confirmed, Deputy Tourism Minister Kostas Koumis told CNA on Wednesday, explaining that this year there is a record number of participants in the Ayia Napa football tournament.

In a statement to CNA, Koumis, who attended the McDonald’s Ayia Napa Youth Soccer Festival 2024, said that “sports tourism is the market segment with the biggest growth in the global tourism economy.”

He added that “our intention and goal as deputy tourism ministry is to further strengthen sports tourism, which is again proving to be a form of tourism that can grow even more in our country and contribute significantly to the extension of the tourist season.”

In this case, he continued, “it is with great satisfaction that we see the Ayia Napa Soccer Tournament growing, with an increasing contribution to the tourism economy. At a time not among the peak periods for tourism in our country, it has caused a surge in domestic tourism and also contributes to arrivals from other countries.”

According to Koumis, “it is indicative that 66 teams from 8 foreign countries are participating in this year’s event, which is equivalent to more than a thousand children from abroad, many of whom are accompanied by their parents.”

Koumis also noted that “this confirms the great contribution of sports tourism to the tourism economy of our country”.
