2013 Dodge Journey V-6 AWD

Tire, Wheel, Motor vehicle, Automotive design, Vehicle, Land vehicle, Car, Infrastructure, Automotive tire, Alloy wheel,

The Journey’s about-face was nearly as dramatic as the Chrysler comeback that followed. The new Dodge crossover wasn’t just better—it was actually good. But it wasn’t until a 2013 Dodge Journey arrived at our office recently that we were able to put one through our test regimen to quantify exactly how the updates affected performance.

Tire, Motor vehicle, Wheel, Automotive tail & brake light, Product, Automotive tire, Transport, Rim, Automotive design, Red,

Stick with the Six

It’s important to note that not all Journeys have been exorcised of their pre-2011 demons. The Journey’s base powertrain is an anemic 2.4-liter four-cylinder paired with an antiquated four-speed automatic—only the lowliest front-drive trims get it. Fortunately, the upgrade is Chrysler’s well-mannered and lively 3.6-liter V-6 and a six-speed automatic. Our test model, a top-of-the-line 2013 Dodge Journey R/T, also brought a stiffened suspension, 19-inch wheels, and optional all-wheel drive. (You can’t get all-wheel drive without upgrading to the V-6.)

With 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque moving 4280 pounds of metal, the Journey feels sprightly in traffic. The V-6 only starts to come into its element around 3500 rpm, though, so you need to commit to the gas pedal to truly enjoy this engine’s best attributes—assertive power, minimal vibration, and rapidly rising revs.

It’s too bad the gearbox it’s forced to work with is so disappointing. For one, even though it’s possible to choose your own gears to keep the six-cylinder in the burliest part of its power band, the six-speed automatic’s manual shifting mode is so unintuitive and unresponsive that it’s best ignored. The transmission also has a hard time following the driver’s directions when left in drive. Under acceleration, downshifts can be slow, abrupt, or even absent, leaving the driver waiting and wondering. At least the transmission understands the drill when charging hard off the line, helping the Journey achieve 60 mph in a quick-for-the-segment 7.1 seconds. The 2013 thus hits the mark 1.2 seconds quicker than we recorded in our only test of the slovenly, prerefresh model, a 2009 Journey R/T AWD with its 235-hp, 3.5-liter SOHC V-6.

Bigger Brakes, Shorter Stops

With our skidpad blanketed in snow, we weren’t able to test lateral grip, but around town, the all-wheel-drive system and the Kumho Solus KH16 M+S tires provided all the traction we needed whether we were on snow-covered streets or sun-soaked, dry roads. At the test track, we measured the stop from 70 mph in 172 feet, a significant 17 feet shorter than the 2009 model did on the same type of tires. The difference can be attributed to larger front and rear brake rotors adopted as part of the 2011 redesign. The only mark against the Journey’s chassis is a matter of comfort. The R/T’s 19-inch wheels, 225/55 tires, and stiffened suspension make for a brittle and busy ride on rough roads. For a family crossover that’s tasked with tackling road trips rather than road circuits, it’s an inexplicable compromise. We’d shop for a Journey in SXT or Crew trim, both of which have softer suspensions.

Practicality over Performance

The late-blooming Journey’s best attribute has always been no-nonsense practicality as a family hauler, not performance. We like its pragmatic packaging in a body that’s neither too big nor too small, its ergonomically friendly and attractive interior, and its reasonable price. (Our heavily optioned R/T nears the top of the range at $34,305, but you can get its driveline for some seven grand less.) From our first drive, we knew the Journey’s update was worth every penny spent on development. Now that we’ve strapped our test equipment to the crossover, we can also state that Dodge got its money’s worth in acceleration and braking improvements.

We explored the best and worst dodge journey years, pinpointing the models with the most issues and collecting honest opinions from owners, all to offer you an insightful overview of its historical reliability..

A gray Dodge Journey, one of the years to avoid, driving down a dirt road.

Before the discontinuation, the Dodge Journey was one of the best mid-size SUVs produced for a dozen generations, and Dodge didn’t give up on it due to reliability issues. However, that doesn’t mean you can just go ahead and buy any model as some model years have received quite a few complaints.

Don’t go searching through the market just yet, since our team decided to give you all the important details in one guide. We’ve scanned the NHTSA records on common complaints and recalls to give you a complete picture of best years to buy and worst Dodge Journey years to avoid . On top of that, we’ve gone an extra step as we reached out to real Journey owners for their accounts and experiences, so stay tuned for the details.

How we rated the best and worst Dodge Journey years

During our evaluation of the Dodge Journey as a model, we’ve gone through the reports on various model years based on several sources. First, we relied on trustworthy organizations like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and we went through their records including details on recalls and common driver complaints.

After that, we’ve done some more digging on Dodge Journey recalls through reliable platforms like Cars.com, as well as sources of authority like Edmunds and Kelly Blue Book. As mentioned, we wanted to give you honest Dodge Journey reviews and we could only do that by citing some forums with real experiences of previous drivers and Journey owners.

Most common Dodge Journey problems

The Dodge Journey might be a safe and reliable vehicle. However, it is not exempt from faults and flaws. Among the Dodge Journey most common problems you could run upon are brake problems, defective remote keyless entry systems, interior water leaks, or even damaged head gaskets, so we’ll discuss each of those in more detail.

1. Overheating engine

Engine issues are a common issue in faulty Dodge Journey model years. For the Dodge Journey, these problems happened in the 2009-2016 model years, causing overheating once they hit the 78,000-mile mark. This problem is likely caused by coolant flow challenges due to debris locking the cylinder head coolant port at its primary thermostat housing.

At first, the vehicle’s temperature light may turn on, but this worsens over time. Some Journey owners complained that their vehicles experienced engine power loss , leading to overheating. The vehicle may also develop coolant leaks, which become excessive for its overflow reservoir, causing coolant fluid to spill over.

These engine problems are usually expensive and dangerous, depending on where they happen. For a driver, you don’t want to encounter engine issues every day.

2. Brake problems

Brake issues were the most common troubles that plagued the Dodge Journey, especially its 2009-2010 model years. The brakes on these models wear out prematurely , which happens to relatively new Journey vehicles at about 30,000 miles. Some drivers mentioned that this issue has become severe, requiring them to replace their brakes every three months.

The abovementioned issues are among the few brake-related problems you could face if you purchase a problematic Dodge Journey model year. These issues are inconvenient and dangerous, especially for driving at high speeds. You want to avoid a vehicle that struggles with maintaining proper brakes.

3. Defective remote keyless entry system

The Dodge Journey has many cool features, and the remote keyless system is supposed to be one of them. Instead, the keyless system is another Dodge Journey feature that has become problematic for drivers.

Many frustrated owners complain that the system doesn’t work correctly as it gives off either wrong key readings or the annoying “key not detected” message. The system sometimes interferes with the key fob, preventing drivers from locking or unlocking the doors. To fix this issue, owners may need to do a software update.

4. Interior water leaks

Some owners of the 2009-2018 Dodge Journey models have expressed discomfort caused by dampness inside the cabin. The cabin appears vulnerable to water leaks , typically at a low mileage of about 50,000 to 60,000 miles. According to complaints from owners, the driver’s seat floor of the Dodge Journey may become wet when they travel in the rain.

Other drivers complained that they noticed leaks near the side of the Journey, causing wet floors and carpets. Additionally, some drivers reported leaks near windows, headliners, and vents, and you may need a professional to fix the leaks and resolve the issue.

5. Damaged head gasket

This is another notorious Dodge Journey issue among vehicle owners. Drivers note that this problem commonly happens at about 100,000 miles. It might begin with performance issues and graduate to engine failure over time. This may be due to cracked or damaged head gaskets.

Some drivers have reported having leaky or blown head gaskets , causing severe damage to the engine. Experts recommend a compression test to verify if your Journey has faulty head gaskets. If they are defective, you may replace them yourself if you are a DIYer or have a professional do the job.

Worst Dodge Journey years to avoid

The Dodge Journey has had several great models; however, there are also some model years you should avoid if you intend to purchase a Dodge Journey. Below is a list of Journey model years to avoid:

Naturally, our team will get you through all these model years and their issues so you can have an easier time picking the most reliable Journey model.

First-generation Journey (2009-2012 model years)

The 2009 Dodge Journey was the first model of this generation, and it was associated with numerous problems and complaints from drivers. Its prevalent issue was with the brakes, and many drivers complained of frequent brake replacements within a short timeframe. These drivers point out that the vehicle is too heavy for the brake pads and rotors.

Other drivers reported that regardless of how gentle you are with the vehicle, it doesn’t stop the brakes from wearing out at 30,000 miles or earlier. Additionally, the braking power isn’t sufficient for the size of the vehicle and can lead to disastrous accidents in the worst cases.

Another issue of the 2009 model year was with its transmission, which caused rough gear shifting . Some drivers complained that shifting the vehicle out of the first gear was difficult, especially during cold weather. Also, several drivers report that their transmission fails at around 60,000 miles, causing them to abandon the vehicle.

The 2009 and 2010 models were also plagued by electrical faults that prevented the engine from turning over, which may be caused by the neutral safety switch losing communication with the shifter. Most drivers had to put their vehicles in neutral to get the engine to start up. Some drivers also complained that they experience these issues on other components like the horn, windows, radios, etc.

2011 Dodge model year also had issues with the brakes, but unlike the 2009-2010 models, which had brakes that required premature replacements , the 2011 model had brakes that made grinding and squealing sounds. In addition to the noises, drivers complain that their 2011 Journey shakes the steering wheel while braking.

Best Dodge Journey years

The Dodge Journey has several years, which drivers have confirmed to be reliable while offering remarkable performance. So, are you still wondering what are the best Dodge Journey years to buy? The best Dodge Journey years are 2005, 2017, and 2020. Still, there’s a full list of best-rated models:

These Dodge Journey models are some of the best years to date and provide excellent performance. If you are searching for the best Journey years to buy, these years are great choices, and they would give little to no problems without any cause for expensive repairs.

2005 Dodge Journey

Based on all the available NHTSA records and reliability reports, the 2005 Dodge Journey is the best model to date. It only received a few complaints including some engine cooling difficulties, but none of those reports were sufficient to place the model on a list of problematic years.

With a clean reliability record , the model scored a decent overall rating of 4 out of 5 based on reliable automotive agencies.

2017 Dodge Journey

As for the later model years, the 2017 Dodge Journey made it to the list as one of the most reliable options. It received model-specific concerns with some of the main complaints being related to A/C heater faults and electrical malfunctions.

2020 Dodge Journey

Finally, we can’t leave out the 2020 Journey model which also proved to be pretty reliable with just under 10 reliability concerns. Among those, drivers have mostly reported problems with seat belts and brakes, while the model received an overall rating of 4.2 out of 5 on Cars.com and similar sources.

Is the Dodge Journey worth buying?

The Dodge Journey is an excellent SUV with remarkable performance. However, it doesn’t have a reasonable edge over its rivals, as consumers complain that the vehicle is made from cheap interior materials and lacks a host of safety features that can be found in most competitors.

If you’re eyeing versatile SUVs check out Ford Explorer Sport Trac years to avoid , Nissan Xterra years to avoid , or Mitsubishi Outlander years to avoid . While these vehicles are known for their ruggedness and capability, it’s vital to consider that not all model years have lived up to expectations.

What is the most common problem with the Dodge Journey?

The remote keyless entry system is Dodge Journey’s most reported issue. According to drivers, the system gives off the wrong readings or the u0022key not detectedu0022 message.

Is a Dodge Journey a reliable car?

The Dodge Journey is reliable as long as you keep away from its worst model years.

How many miles can you expect from a Dodge Journey?

The Dodge Journey can last up to 200,00 miles under ideal maintenance conditions.

Should I buy a Dodge Journey?

Yes, you can buy a Dodge Journey; however, you want to avoid buying its worst years. Also, it would be best if you considered its interior before making a purchase.

I purchased a one owner 2012 dodge journey sxt with awd. It had 19,000 miles on it when bought back in May and now has 25,000 so still under warranty We got some snow last week and when we took out the journey it started out fine but a soon as we hit some large hills we started to spin and the service awd light came on. When this light was on it was like we only had front wheel drive and got stuck. We turned around and was able to get home but could not get it into the garage which has a very slight grade to go up and I mean slight. A little later I started the car and the service awd was not on and it just went right into the garage without issue. So to see what the heck is going on here I took it back out and found a flat parking lot with just a dusting of snow, started to drive slow at first then started to drive faster and caused the suv to spin and lose traction. The light came right on and I was back into the same condition where it just seemed like fwd only. Drove slowly for a bit and the light went off and all seemed well.

I have talked to a couple dealers and also Chrysler customer service and no one has heard of this happening. I feel like I may have bought a lemon here since this is not the only issue.

Other issues:

- Clock is always 15 minutes or so ahead even after you reset it

- Radio will some times be at the highest volume when you start the car

- Ball joint or something else that makes a banging sound when on the brakes from the passenger side. Has been to two dealerships and no one can find an issue with this noise. I have even recreated it for them

I attached pics of the service awd on my dash. On one of the pics you will see that I turned off the traction control or what not but even when in this condition the traction indicator comes on and then the service awd.

Any info would be appreciated (it goes back to the dealership soon)

Could be as simple as a bad sensor, too early to have any kind of mechanical failure I think..(Unless it was abused)

Have you noticed any oil drip on the floor?

good luck, and you are one lucky guy by still having warranty on it.

They are lying if they have never heard of the Service AWD issue.... I just googled "Service AWD Dodge" and there are threads regarding this issue so it does exist and they need to figure it out. Luckily you are still under warranty. As far as clock & volume issues there are threads already dealing with those issues you can read up on and I think there is a software update to cure that problem.

:)

Thanks for the info, ya they need to get this sorted ASAP.

12JourneyRT

I recently experienced the same problem over the weekend. We had a pretty decent snow and the "Service AWD System" light came on followed by "Wheels Syncronizing" and the traction control light. It seems like sometimes it is AWD and at other times it definitely is not as the front wheels will just spin continuously. I took it to the dealership yesterday and their diagnosis was the following: they pulled the code C1078 (Tire Revolution Out Of Range Performance), now my Journey RT was bought new in March of 2012 and had 6 miles on it and it currently has 14,200 miles on it with scheduled tire rotations. Their explanation for this happening is that all the tires are low on tread and not the same depth causing the AWD system to disengage (same as putting the smaller spare tire on and it disengaging to prevent damage to the AWD system). My tires are: left front 4/32, front right 3/32, left rear 3/32, right rear 2/32 as far as tread depth, which makes them all a different circumfrance / size. They said I need 4 new tires to correct the problem and prevent any damage to other systems / parts. It has the OEM Kumho Solus KH16 tires and they stated that they are really soft and do not last long. I really do hate the tires but a 60,000 mile tire worn out at 14,200 miles causing problems with the AWD system???? Another dealership confirmed the same thing so I guess it is 4 new tires after only 10 months and 14,200 miles which I am not happy about.

This happened to me as well but the light went off the next time I started the DJ. Taking it to a local dealer here to see what they say about it. May have to wait till I move back to the states this summer to really address this. Hopefully, it was one of those glitches and won't come back.

i just turned 41k on my 17 inch kumo tires and still have great tread on mine. i live in a small town and go on long trips with the car. one thing if you do alot of city driving will wear your tires alot more than normal , i know this as my daughter delivers mail and will wear out a set of tires in less than 1yr. couldnt believe she wears than out that fast but stop and go and around town driveing does takes it toll on her tires, also she goes thur a set of brake pads every 6months and or about 7k miles and i put wagner thermo-quite pads on the front which are top of line pads. oh well good luck with your new tires and hope that solves your problem

exact same issue yesterday with new 2013 journey, slick incline, same symptoms.... Like I wrote your post

Update: the next time I started the vehicle the check light was off and hasnt come back. I recently had to repair a flat that caused the check AWD light to come on while the spare was on. As soon as I put the reg tireback on all lights went back off.

Next time it happens to you, try cleaning the snow around the brake shoe... The ABS sensor is probably getting to much snow due to the wheel design. Yes, it's a flaw that Dodge should recognize...

We have a new 2013 Journey SXT , AWD, we have drove it for 3 weeks now, we got the first good snow this week and the AWD Service light has come on 3 times so far this winter, and yes it sucks, I have to pull over stop, turn off the car ( all the way off ) then restart it and then its back in all wheel, and off we go. I think tire spin is doing this, it puts the car in front wheel drive when it happens. I traded in our 06 AWD Magnum R/T and it spun the wheels all the time and I never had anything like this happen. I know this has a 3.6 V-6 but i don't know what trans. is it a NAG-1 ? I have not been back to the Dodge Dealer yet, Do they have a fix for this ??? I do not wish to wast my time with them if they don't. I do like this car its nice and roomy, and it moves right out when you step on it, and we love all the new lights and bells, And so I hope this can be fixed

You are correct in your observation that the vehicle behaved as if it were FWD only. If a fault is detected in the Drivetrain Control Module (which is responsible for governing the AWD system) then it will disable the clutches in the power transfer unit and revert to FWD only. When you cycled the key, it cleared the active fault and allowed the PTU to engage the rear wheels again until the fault code returned.

When you return it to the dealer, it should have some stored fault code(s) which will aid in diagnosis. The easiest thing you can do is to check the tire pressures and condition. Always start with the basics. The low tire light should be on if one or more tires are significantly low on pressure, but check them anyway. If the tires have significant wear relative to one another (as if one were nearly worn and the other new, for example) the difference in circumference can make a large enough differential in wheel speeds relative to one another, which will cause the DCM to disable the AWD system to protect the clutches for damage.

Regarding the clock issue - your dealer will have this software update. It just came out in October of this year.

Regarding the noise when braking - does the banging sound repeat as the vehicle slows down, or does it make a one-time sound when the brakes applied? I have seen instances in other vehicles where an out-of-round rotor will cause a knocking sound under certain braking conditions but not necessarily a vibration when the brakes are applied .

We have changed a few clutch assy. on the rear diff on these for no AWD. That said, are you guys using snow tires on these? If your trying to run the 19s in the winter, it ain't gonna work. If its always engaging the rear clutch , if the tires are slipping, its gradually going to trip the light. These are AWD, NOT 4WD.....The rear wheels are engaged by a clutch pack assy, that's not meant for continuous duty.

I just had this same issue occur on Saturday. The lights kept coming on and off, then it stayed on for about 40 miles. Yesterday morning going to church it was on. But when I went to watch football at a friend's yesterday afternoon it was off, and has stayed off, and didn't come back on today. AWD seems to be working normally - I took the Journey to a parking lot that had a light snow cover and accelerated strongly - no issues.

Now, it warmed up on Saturday, and we got rain. Not sure if moisture got into something, and now it's gone?

:(

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, knock on wood - the light has stayed off and no issues with the AWD, and I've driven her quite a bit in the last couple weeks, and in some serious snow too. When the weather gets better, I want to pull the modular connectors to the hub sensors apart and spray a little Fluid Film on each one, to ensure a good connection. Not sure what the fault was, but with the weather we've had, crud can work its way into connectors.

I have a DJ 2012 RT 56000 KM.I am having same problem since yesterday, the AWD service light was ON during my 30 minutes drive to work. In my town we got a lot snow and streets are cover by ice.First time these light came ON during these winter.Planning to take the car tomorrow to dealer but wondering why the light came out if there is not good traction. This light for me means more a problem than a warning . Should I stop driving the car while the light is ON. Appreciate you inputs guys.

Hi Guys, I have a DJ 2012 RT 56000 KM.I am having same problem since yesterday, the AWD service light was ON during my 30 minutes drive to work.

Your fine to drive it. It's just like the check engine light. Comes on to warn you that something is afoul and to get it serviced asap. Most likely, when the light comes on, it disables the AWD system anyway.

Did you have any other lights on besides Service AWD? In my 2012 SXT, when it came on, the ABS and Traction lights also lit.

If the light is off, don't bother taking to the dealer. My dealer told me that the reason for Service AWD doesn't get retained in the memory, so they can't pull any info on what caused it if the indicator turns off. Mine turned itself off about a month ago - been ok since then and everything functions normally. Who knows what caused it, or how to prevent it again?

Don't worry about this, when one of the tires spins faster than the others (uphill on snow and ice) it'll throw the light. The next time you start the DJ it should turn off, at least it does for me. Another situation that'll throw the code is putting the spare tire on as its a different diameter.

Took it into the service department and they asked if I had a spare on it. Told them just got it so no. All he would tell me is it had some"odd codes" on it but wouldn't elaborate on it. But yeah I noticed it doesn't come back on when I start it the next morning. I got it used so who knows what was done to it before i got it. Speaking of that. It has been very cold in my neck of the woods lately in the single digits. Anyone ever have a problem when it starts up first time of the day it sounds like a belt or pulley going out for maybe 10-20 seconds than goes away?

Cold weather noises are normal. People dont like to hear that but it is true.

Mine makes the sound that a power steering pump makes when its very low on fluid - just for a brief 1-2 seconds and only when it's super cold, like low teens or single digits and on first morning start up. I consider that to be normal operation in those kinds of temps. Fluid viscosities are very high when the temps are that cold and it takes longer for things to start flowing. No worries.

Dodge Journey Problems: 8 Common Issues (Explained)

' src=

The most common problems and possible solutions are listed below.

Table of Contents

Remote Keyless Entry System Works Intermittently

If your remote keyless entry system starts acting weird and only working sometimes, you might get frustrated.

It’s a huge inconvenience not to have technology work the way you expect it to. But, there’s an easy fix for the problem.

2013 dodge journey awd problems

Probable Causes and Solutions

The most common reason your Dodge Journey remote keyless entry system may begin working intermittently is because there is a problem with the component’s software .

Usually, updating the software will correct the problem.

If you upgrade the software and continue to have problems with the remote keyless ignition system, you should visit a Dodge dealership and have the problem diagnosed.

If the problem isn’t related to a software update, it could be an issue with the keyfob itself. If the keyfob has gone bad, it might be necessary to replace the keyfob.

A Dodge-certified technician can also upgrade the software for you.

Unexplained Dampness Inside a Dodge Journey

If you enter your vehicle and notice unexplained dampness, it could create an uncomfortable ride and be upsetting. Afterall, water isn’t supposed to leak inside a vehicle.

But unexplained dampness inside the vehicle of the Journey is a common problem, and is easily fixed.

Most often, especially in models 2009 to 2018, unexplained dampness in the interior of the Journey is from a water leak .

2013 dodge journey awd problems

Improperly sealed body seams can let water into the vehicle and create dampness.

If this is the reason your Journey is getting wet inside, the problem can be fixed by having the seals replaced and properly installed.

Engine Overheating Due to Coolant Flow Problem

If your Dodge Journey was made between 2009 and 2018, you may have issues with your engine overheating. It seems the problem can occur at anytime during the Journey’s existence.

Vehicles with as low as 20,000 miles have experienced this issue as well as Journeys with well over 100,000 miles too.

Usually, it needs diagnosed by a Dodge mechanic. But, there are easy solutions to prevent this problem from happening again.

If you have debris in your engine, it could cause a coolant flow issue.

If there’s a disruption in your coolant flow, the engine could overheat.

If not corrected, an engine overheating could cause serious damage to the engine. When debris blocks the cylinder head at the coolant port of the thermostat housing, the right amount of coolant won’t reach the engine.

2013 dodge journey awd problems

Removing the debris from the engine and especially around this port fixes the problem.

Check Engine Light with Diagnostic Code P0339

If your check engine light comes on, it’s a good idea to have a diagnostic test to determine what the cause of the warning is.

If you get a P0339 code, there is probably a problem with the vehicle’s crankshaft position sensor.

This issue is most common with 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2016 Dodge Journeys. Also, check our list of typical reasons the check engine light appears .

The crankshaft position sensor check engine light code will cause intermittent loss of power to this component.

To correct this problem, a technician may be able to add a shim to the crankshaft sensor .

If this does not correct the problem, it might be necessary to replace the sensor and flex plate.

Inaccurate Speed Settings and/or Excessive RPMs

If you notice your Journey is revving high or showing that you’re driving excessively, you might have a problem with the vehicle’s powertrain control module (PCM).

This is even more likely if you notice the problem when using cruise control.

Thankfully, inaccurate speed settings and unusually high RPMs can be related to an issue with the Journey’s software.

In most cases, updating the software for the powertrain control module (PCM) will correct the problem.

Updating the software can be done at a Dodge dealership.

Dodge Journey Seats Showing Signs of Corrosion

Dodge Journey 2009, 2010, and 2013 Journeys may show signs of wear, specifically around the seat frames.

If you notice rust around the vehicle’s seat frames, it’s important not to ignore the problem.

Instead, you should take the vehicle to a Dodge dealership to have corrosion inhibitor in the affected areas. There are also revised covers for the second row available to help prevent the issue from progressing.

Rough Idle after Cold Start on Dodge Journey with V6 Engines

2009 and 2010 Dodge Journey drivers have reported rough idling after a cold start .

The problem usually only occurs with Journeys equipped with a V6 engine.

Sometimes when this happens, a check engine light will come on. Diagnostic testing will show code P050D.

If your vehicle is showing a P050D diagnostic code, the rough idling after a cold start could be due to a problem with the powertrain control module (PCM).

After a mechanic diagnoses the problem, they can tell you whether a software upgrade will correct the issue, or if a replacement part is needed.

Dodge Journey is Stuck in Park

There’s nothing more frustrating then getting in your vehicle and realizing it won’t start. If your Journey is stuck in park, you will need to see a technician to have the problem corrected.

Dodge is aware of this problem and has issued a recall to correct the issue.

A Journey shifter getting stuck in park is likely due to the material used to create the shifter .

Making an appointment at a Dodge dealership will give technicians the opportunity to replace the parts and ensure you’re vehicle shifts every time you need it too.

Dodge Journey Brakes Wearing Out Prematurely

Some people go through brake pads faster than others, but if you drive a Dodge Journey, it might not be your fault. When the car manufacturer created the 2009 and 2010 Journeys, they did so with the best SUV technology and developed a crossover vehicle that was pleasurable to drive.

But they added brakes that were more suitable to a sedan.

The sedan brakes created a need for new brakes at just about 12,000 miles.

Dodge drivers filed a class-action lawsuit that extended the warranty of the vehicle’s brakes by three years.

If you notice your brakes have worn out quickly on your Journey, it’s a good idea to have them checked out.

Of course, it’s also important to have the parts replaced as needed to ensure the vehicle is safe to drive.

2013 Dodge journey 6 cylinder AWD acceleration problems

On a recent snowy drive from Chicago back home to Detroit, our 2013 Dodge Journey (6 cylinder AWD) started to make a screeching sound. My husband said it sounded like a belt. The sound would come and go. Due to the snow we were not able to go much over 45mph on the hwy. About 30 min after hearing the noise the first time, the car all of a sudden lost almost all acceleration. Not great when you are in the middle lane in snowy weather. We were able to get to the shoulder. After letting the car idle for a short time (3-4 min) in park and stepping on the gas peddle while in park, we took off again. As long as we kept our speed 45-55mph for a short time the car would started to drive normal for 45-60 min, until it would happen again. One time we did not let the car rest for the normal 3-4 min and we were back on the shoulder again within a few min. The only warning light that came on once and then went out was the “check AWD” we have only driven the car locally a couple of times since, I was planning to take it to the Dodge dealership later this week. however if you have any ideas as to what this may have been that would be helpful. I fear this is a problem that is hard to duplicate, however this also concerns me as I normally drive a lot for work and often have several kids in my car on weekends. Any suggestions ?

It’s sounds like AWD system didn’t like the conditions you were driving in. Slippery?

Bring it to the dealer and they’ll hook a scanner up to find out why AWD is binding.

Full Edmunds Review: 2013 Dodge Journey SUV

For 2013, the Dodge Journey Crew trim boasts a stronger value proposition, as Dodge has added a few more standard features (such as leather upholstery and heated front seats) and reduced its price.

Edmunds says

Though not an obvious choice, the 2013 Dodge Journey has many positive attributes to make it worthy of consideration.

Vehicle overview

When it debuted four years ago, the Dodge Journey crossover didn't have much in its favor. We used the comment "Needs Improvement" so frequently on its report card that we were certain its fate as a back-of-the-class entry was sealed. Yet two years later it was more like "Most Improved" as the Journey underwent a complete under-the-skin makeover that put it on the honor roll. Yes, the 2013 Dodge Journey may look the same as that original '09, but they're as different as a scholar-athlete is from the class clown.

Always in its favor has been the Journey's interior versatility. Roomier than your typical compact crossover SUV, the more wagon-like Journey offers a small third-row seat that can accommodate a couple of small kids. That added flexibility, along with its reasonable dimensions, makes the Journey the just-right choice for an ideal family vehicle without the added cost, fuel appetite and parking hassles of the larger three-row crossovers.

Under the hood, it's a tale of two engines -- one desirable and one not. The base four-cylinder is underpowered and its fuel economy isn't that great. The 3.6-liter V6, on the other hand, is one of the most potent engines in this segment, yet it still provides decent fuel economy. Underway, the Journey boasts composed handling and a supple ride, while inside is a stylish cabin fitted with high-quality materials and stocked with user-friendly high-tech features. Other attributes include hidden storage compartments and optional integrated child seats.

Thanks to its well-rounded nature, the 2013 Dodge Journey earns our approval. Of course, there are other impressive choices available as well. We also like the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento ; both boast a small but usable third-row seat, better four-cylinder performance and available V6 engines. If a third row isn't a priority, models like the Ford Escape or Honda CR-V are also excellent. But overall the Journey is a respectable pick for a small crossover, particularly with the optional V6.

2013 Dodge Journey models

The 2013 Dodge Journey is available in five- and seven-passenger configurations. It is available in American Value Package (AVP), SE, SXT, R/T and Crew trim levels.

The American Value Package comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, dual-zone manual climate control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a sliding and reclining second-row seat and a six-speaker sound system with a compact touchscreen interface, a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface.

The SE adds privacy tinted glass, side roof rails and LED taillights.

Moving up to the SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels, foglamps, unique front/rear fascias, a cargo cover/net and satellite radio. A premium sound system, sunroof and 19-inch wheels are optional.

The Crew adds a V6 engine, remote start, 19-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a six-way power driver seat (with four-way lumbar adjustment), dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 115-volt power outlet, a premium audio system, Bluetooth and a fold-flat front passenger seat (with hidden storage bin).

The R/T includes all the Crew features (minus the roof rails) and adds a monochrome exterior treatment, special 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension and black perforated-leather upholstery with red stitching.

Some of the higher trim's features are available on the lower trims via option packages, while other available features (depending on trim) include rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, a folding/reclining third-row seat, three-zone automatic climate control (with rear air-conditioning), integrated second-row child booster seats, a rear seat entertainment system and a navigation system with an 8.4-inch display.

2013 dodge journey awd problems

Performance & mpg

The 2013 Dodge Journey AVP, SE and SXT are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. Its EPA-estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined – not great given its anemic acceleration and thriftier competitors.

Optional on the SXT and standard on the Crew and R/T is a 3.6-liter V6. It's good for 283 hp and 260 lb-ft and is matched to a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional. At the track we recorded a 7.5-second 0-60-mph time for a Journey V6 FWD, an average time for the class. Fuel economy stands at 17/25/20 with front-wheel drive and 16/24/19 with all-wheel drive; both are a little below average for V6-powered small crossovers.

Every 2013 Dodge Journey comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Integrated second-row child booster seats are optional on every Journey. In Edmunds brake testing, a Journey V6 FWD came to a stop from 60 mph in 121 feet, an average performance for its segment.

In government crash tests, the Journey received four out of five stars for overall crash protection, with four stars awarded for frontal-impact protection and five stars for side-impact protection. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Journey received the top score of "Good" in the frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength tests.

The 2013 Dodge Journey's four-cylinder engine just doesn't have enough power to get this heavy crossover moving. It also doesn't provide enough fuel economy to justify its lackluster performance. As such, we'd avoid it and step up to the 3.6-liter V6. This engine is used throughout the Chrysler/Dodge lineups, and for good reason: It offers smooth, robust power and decent fuel economy. Unfortunately, its six-speed automatic transmission can be slow to respond when a downshift (or two) is needed.

On the move, the Journey is competent for the class, with a smooth ride and secure handling. The latter feels especially confident, boasting precise steering with a light yet still nicely weighted feel to it. That said, a Ford Escape or Honda CR-V likely will feel more agile around town, while the Chevy Equinox provides an even more comfortable and quiet ride on the freeway.

From both design and execution standpoints, the Journey's interior rates as one of the best in the segment. The materials are high in quality, the design is clean and modern and the up-to-the-minute technology is pretty easy to use. We especially like the extra-large touchscreen interface available on most models.

Other strengths for the Journey include its clever storage bins and available integrated child seats that make it decidedly family-friendly. Also helping that cause is a versatile seating arrangement. While the Dodge's sliding and reclining second-row seat is now the norm for this class, its optional third-row seat is not. Like the one in the Toyota RAV4, this seat is far from adult-friendly, but if you need to take a couple extra kids to a T-ball game, it should come in handy.

In terms of hauling cargo, the Journey offers a total capacity of 68 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. That's a few cubes smaller than the RAV4 and CR-V, but bigger than the Chevy Equinox. For smaller items, the Journey provides storage bins hidden under the second-row floor as well as under the passenger seat.

This paper presents the results of a simplified analysis of a differential measuring circuit with pulsed supply of the single-coil eddy current sensors connected to the circuit, with approximate differentiation of currents, and with an ADC at the output. The circuit is designed as part of automation systems for tests of gas turbine engines. Methods for eliminating the temperature influences on the sensors using the hardware and software of the measurement system are considered. Using a model of the measuring circuit, we determined the families of conversion functions (dependences of the code on the desired radial and axial displacements) for normal and nominal temperatures and then, from their difference, the families of functions of temperature influence on code changes, which characterize possible errors. Quantitative estimates of the maximum values of the influence functions were obtained which confirm the efficiency of the proposed methods.
