I had an absolutely amazing round trip, and our guide made it even more memorable. The tour was perfect in every way, from start to finish. Our guide was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly friendly and accommodating. They went above and beyond to ensure that we had a wonderful experience. I can't recommend this tour and our guide enough! It was truly a trip to remember.

We really enjoyed the trip overall. We saw and experienced a lot and could ask the guides anything we wanted. They were very eager and flexible to meet our needs. We had two different guides for each of the three days. With the first one we had to organize and pay for all entrance fees and drinks ourselves. This is contrary to the agreed terms. We have spent so total safe again 55 Rial extra. The program was not really known to both guides and it was sometimes positive and sometimes negative deviated from it. So we had no Dune bashing and had to pay for the Dolphin watching (which was not organized at all) and the Camel ride. The trip was not planned wisely. For example, we arrived at the market in Nizwa when everything was over. The short city tour in Muscat on Saturday did not take place at all. Thus we never saw the big mosque. This would have been one of our highlights, which we really wanted to see! The second guide was much better educated, explained more and could answer our questions precisely. Thus, we learned much more about the country and its people. We learned from this that it is not good to book a trip through two agencies involved. We also advise against changing guides during such a short trip.

Oman is Great. So are the people. The tour touched relevant areas in Oman and gave a good overview of the country. Unfortunately the guide told us little information.after the tour I read things about our stops that would have been great to learn while we were there. Mostly probably because his English had serious limitations. He hardly understood questions. I would have wanted more time in the desert. Just over night was too short. And the mentioned dune bashing was not on offer. Tips on what to bring would have been helpful. E.g. wet shoes to wear in the Wadi Shab Trip. There were a lot of painful pebbles to walk over.

Reviews of Active Adventure Tours in Oman

The City, Wadis and Desert Tour has been amazing thanks to our outstanding tour guide Aziz! From the start, Aziz took excellent care of us, arriving early, making sure we packed the appropriate attire for each day, providing water and excellent knowledge on the sights and Omani traditions and being very flexible every step of the tour based on our interests and energy. Aziz stood with us every step of the way which was especially necessary while walking through the wadis. The path can be very tricky and he also joined us in the water to tell us exactly where to step at the slippery underground and how to get the best out of experiencing the amazing nature! We saw other tourists trying to battle this on their own, so this was really exceptional! But what really drove home was the outstanding kindness and helpfulness Aziz showed not only to us but to every lost or hurt tourist around us. Thank you Aziz for this amazing experience and for truly showing us the best of Omani kindness!
My tour experience with Abood, the fun, cool and friendly guide in Oman, was nothing short of extraordinary. His unique blend of historical knowledge and humor, his warm and sociable personality, and his talent for creating a personalized and unforgettable adventure elevated my exploration of Oman to a new level. Abood didn't just show me a country; he shared its soul with me! If you ever find yourself in the captivating landscapes of Oman, seeking a tour guide who makes your journey truly remarkable, look for someone like Abood – an embodiment of an outstanding guide who goes above and beyond to create cherished memories. Thanks Abood and Gid Oman Tours for making my first trip in Oman an amazing adventure!!!

Oman plans to attract more adventure travellers from around the world with the launch of more than 40 projects across the sultanate.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in Oman has unveiled plans for new adventure tourism projects , including cable cars, ziplines and mountain trails.

Replete with mountains, caves, valleys, deserts and coastal regions, Oman’s natural diversity already attracts thrill-seeking travellers , and the proposed adventure projects will attract more visitors while boosting the country's tourism industry and the economy, said the ministry.

Designed to offer travellers more diverse outdoor experiences, projects include a cable car in Oman’s Botanic Garden at Al Khoudh in Muscat and ziplines at Wadi Darbat in Dhofar, a place that's always popular during Khareef season .

Some projects are already in the works with several more to be added before 2025, the ministry said.

The sultanate's rugged mountain ranges will be developed as part of the plans, with new hiking trails at Wadi Bani Khalid and Wadi Al Arbaeen, destinations known for their natural springs and waterfalls.

In total, 15 mountain trails will be paved, many of which will be in the Hajar Mountain range which is home to Jebel Shams, Oman's tallest mountain. This will be in addition to the sultanate's 53 already approved mountain trails.

New campsites, trails and cafes will be rolled out at Wadi Bani Awf, one of the most popular destinations in Oman for outdoor adventure. Photo: Emirates Canyoneering Club

On Jebel Akhdar — Oman’s green mountain — a new road is being paved so travellers can easily get to Al Sogara, a remote mountainside village where visitors can get a glimpse into life in Oman in days gone by.

Campsites, changing rooms, cafes and other tourism facilities are also being considered for construction on existing mountain tracks in Wadi Bani Awf, a destination that flows with spring water all year round.

Caving in Oman is another big attraction for adventure travellers. The county has multiple cave networks and many are already developed for adventure travel. The ministry plans to extend recreational caving facilities, and is working to approve select tourism companies for licences that will allow them to organise caving expeditions and train new guides, in partnership with the Ministry of Defence.

At some of Oman's existing destinations popular for adventure travel, including the Eastern and Western Al Hajar Mountains, Dhofar and Musandam, new sites will be evaluated for their suitability for adventure tourism.

“Adventure tourism contributes to boosting economic growth. Oman is ranked among those countries that attract many segments of tourists, including those interested in adventure tourism,” said Yousef Rashid Al Harassi from the ministry in January, when he announced an online service for licensing adventure tour operators in Oman.

Last month, Oman inaugurated the world’s longest zipline over water . Riders on the zipline will travel 1,800 metres from Jebel Fitt over the coast of the Wilayat of Khasab, reaching speeds of up to 80kph.

Oman is a world of breathtaking landscapes, ancient treasures, and unforgettable experiences. Get ready to start planning some incredible adventures in Oman! Nestled on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman is a hidden gem that awaits intrepid travellers with open arms. From its mesmerizing desert dunes to its rugged mountain ranges and pristine beaches, Oman is an off-the-beaten-path destination and a captivating country that’s a playground for adventure-seeking travellers.

In this complete travel guide to Oman, you will find interesting facts about Oman so you can start to get to know the country. Then, for adrenaline junkies, this guide details the best places to find adventures in Oman, and also which locations to include on every itinerary to ensure you get a taste of all that Oman has to offer.

Interesting Facts About Oman

Oman is officially known as the Sultanate of Oman and the population is approximately 4.5 million as of 2021. It is also one of the oldest human-inhabited places on Earth and the oldest independent state in the Arab world.

The countries bordering Oman are the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia & Yemen.

It comes as a surprise to many that Oman is one of the safest counties in the world. The local government prioritizes the safety & security of visitors, making it a great option for travellers who’ve never visited the middle east before.

The crime rate in Oman is as low as 0.27 per 100K of the population, as of 2020, as reported by macrotrends.net.

For comparison, the U.S.A. is 6.52!

Like many countries in the Arab world, alcohol is virtually non-existent in Oman. Due to Islamic law alcohol consumption is restricted and only available in licensed hotels and a few designated restaurants & bars.

But who needs alcohol when the national drink of Oman is coffee? The unique & delicious flavours of Omani coffee are very easy to find, cities and towns are filled with coffee shops and are generally served alongside local dates.

Keep in mind when planning your trip that weekends in Oman are Friday & Saturday. Also, Friday is the main day for prayer so many businesses will be closed.

Finding The Best Adventures in Oman

Oman is an awesome destination for adventure seekers! With its stunning desert landscapes, hidden wadis perfect for hiking, and untouched coastline for snorkelling, there’s no shortage of thrilling activities to get your heart racing. Plus, the warm hospitality of the locals and the chance to immerse yourself in a rich culture make Oman an unforgettable and laid-back adventure hub.

Here’s a rundown of the best type of adventures that can be found in Oman

Swimming in Wadis

Diving into the crystal-clear waters of Oman’s wadis will be a dream for anyone who loves to explore the outdoors. These natural oases tucked away amidst rugged mountains offer the perfect spot to cool off. Don’t forget to pack your (modest) swimsuit, water shoes and towel, then jump in, and prepare to experience nature’s own exhilarating waterparks in Oman.

All of the Wadis in Oman required at least a little bit of hiking, but that’s all part of experiencing the adventures in Oman and a great way to see the natural landscape. Also, some of the Wadis can only be reached by driving a 4 x 4 but definitely not all of them.

These Wadis were my favourite, all required hiking and the entrance can be reached without a 4W4;

Wadi Shab Wadi Bani Khalid Wadi Damm

Explore The Traditional Souqs of Oman

The perfect way to mix adventure and culture in Oman is to visit some of the traditional Souqs. Wander through these bustling markets filled with vibrant colours, exotic spices, and handcrafted treasures that will ignite your senses and have you reaching for your wallet. Remember to haggle like a pro while meeting friendly locals, and bring home unique souvenirs that will forever remind you of your adventures in Oman’s enchanting bazaars!

Some of the best Souqs in Oman, known for providing a great shopping experience for visitors, are;

Muttrah Souq (Muscat) Seeb Souq (Muscat) Bahla Souq (near Nizwa) Nizwa Souq

Star Gazing in the Desert

Whether you love rugged adventures or luxury accommodations, both can easily be found in the deserts of Oman. And the incredible stargazing opportunities are incomparable. Far away from city lights, lay back on the warm sand, and be captivated by the breathtaking canopy of stars above. It’s an awesome experience that will make you feel like you’re on a magical journey through the cosmos in the heart of Oman’s rugged beauty.

One of the best options for desert accommodation in Oman is Thousand Nights Camp, located in Wahiba Sands. Click here to read my full review of Thousand Nights Camp.

Witness Sea Turtle Nesting

For many, this could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and being in Oman will make it even more special. Witness the incredible sight of sea turtle nesting on the sandy beaches.

Oman has 5 of the world’s 7 species of sea turtles, Green Turtle, Loggerhead, Hawksbill, the Olive Ridley Turtle and Leatherback Turtle. From May to October, these gentle giants return to their ancestral nesting grounds, where you can observe them laying their eggs under the moonlit sky. As with all wild animal encounters these experiences aren’t guaranteed, maybe the turtles won’t feel like showing up the day you’re there. But it’s definitely still worth a shot.

Two of the best places to witness nesting sea turtles, particularly if your trip to Oman is for two weeks or less are;

The beaches surrounding Sur and Ras Al Jinz . And, the Ras Al Jinz turtle reserve (which is also a hotel), is a key destination for anyone wanting to sight turtles as they have their own 6km deserted beach. If you aren’t staying at the hotel, for a fee of 8 OMR you can join one of their tours and information sessions.

Discover Ancient Forts & Castles

There are endless secrets to uncover while exploring Oman’s ancient forts & castles that are scattered across the landscape. Wander through the captivating ruins, and let your imagination run wild. You can envision the tales of warriors and royalty that once roamed these impressive structures. It’s a thrilling journey back in time and will satisfy both your love for adventure and your curiosity about Oman’s rich heritage.

Some of the most popular forts and castles open for visitors are;

Mutrah Fort (Muscat) Nizwa Fort Jabreen Castle (30 minutes from Nizwa) Bahla Fort (35 minutes from Nizwa)

Take a Day Trip to Daymaniyat Island

Don’t miss the chance to take a day trip to Daymaniyat Island in Oman – a paradise for snorkelers and beach lovers alike. Hop on a boat and sail to this stunning nature reserve, where crystal-clear waters teem with colourful marine life, offering you unforgettable adventures in Oman.

Located 18 KM off the coast of Barka, Daymaniyat Island is an ideal day trip from Muscat. So, grab your snorkel gear and sunscreen, and get ready for a day filled with excitement and relaxation on this idyllic island getaway.

Hike in Oman’s Mountainous Regions

Every Oman itinerary should include time spent in the mountains, especially for any nature enthusiast or hiking lover. Oman’s mountainous regions are a dream come true. Lace up your hiking boots and explore the rugged beauty of Oman’s untouched mountains. Discover hidden trails leading to breathtaking viewpoints and ancient villages nestled in the hills and surrounded by date palms and an array of other fruits.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a beginner, Oman’s diverse landscapes promise an unforgettable adventure filled with stunning views and a sense of awe-inspiring serenity.

An easy area to access beautiful hiking trails in Oman is Misfat Al Abryeen , plus this village can be reached easily by car.

Recommend Hotel – Misfah Old House

Or, Jebel Akhdar is an impressive mountain range in Oman and also offers luxury hotels. But this area can only be reached by 4W4.

Jabel Shams is another popular mountain in Oman, located in the northeastern town of Al Hamra. And a fun fact, this is the highest peak in Oman, estimated at 2,980 meters and is the first place in Oman to receive sunrise.

Things to Note Before Planning Your Adventures in Oman

Before heading off to start your adventures in Oman, there are a few things worth noting to ensure a smooth and memorable trip. Firstly, be sure to respect the local customs and traditions. Oman is still untouched by mass tourism and it’s important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. While Oman’s climate is generally pleasant, it’s essential to pack for temperature variations between coastal regions and the mountainous interior.

Secondly, Oman is a very peaceful country and that’s partly because acts of aggression & insulting others is a punishable offence. So, during your road trip, you won’t see any road rage and make sure to mind your manners as well.

Lastly, Oman’s diverse landscapes and attractions call for some careful planning. So make sure to research and prioritize the places you want to explore to make the most of your adventures in Oman. Take note of important religious dates, such as Ramadan, how high the temperature may get and that in Oman, you’ll be driving on the right side of the road!

List of Outdoor adventures in Oman

1. wallow in wadi.

Wallow in Wadi

Nothing is more cooling than diving into a wadi pool on a long, hot afternoon; the cool, clear water helps to wash away the heat and dust of the day. Omanis like these natural oases, which are shaded by fruit trees and date palms. They congregate there for parties, picnics, and spontaneous diving competitions.

2. Climbing

Climbing

Oman has many beautiful locations for mountain climbers (experienced or new ones), including rock climbing and abseiling. If it rains, wadis and roads may swiftly flood, so it is advised to constantly monitor the weather. 12 Best Things to do in Oman

Updated December 2023 ,  12 Best Things to do in Oman was originally written in April 2019

I’ve not exactly kept my love for Oman a secret on here. Oman has still remained one of my favorite adventure trips I’ve taken to date with endless opportunities to explore seas of sand dunes, cling to vertical cliff edges, swim in wadis, and even chase a cheeky goat down that may have stolen your sandal while you took a nap in the golden sun. Without carrying on for too long about all the reasons I love Oman I want to share with you the 11 best adventures in Oman.

Cruise The Khors Of Musandam Peninsula

Nicknamed the “Norway of Arabia” and for good reason. This gorgeous exclave (completely surrounded by the UAE in Oman’s far north) on the Hormuz Strait offers jaw-dropping views of the meandering coastline with crystal clear waters. The Musandam Peninsula is a great addition to any Oman itinerary, or those looking for a city break who are visiting Dubai in the UAE.

The Musandam Peninsula is a perfect destination for adventure lovers. Explore the coastline by dhow boat keeping an eye out for dolphins and Socotra cormorants, snorkel or dive in the clear blue waters, take a boat out to camp on the beaches of Oman’s famous Khors, or take a mountain safari on the rugged winding mountain roads.

Bash Over Dunes In Wahiba Sands

Want to traverse what feels like an endless sea of sand dunes? The Wahiba Sands are the best place to experience it.

Pack up your 4WD (don’t forget the sand plates and shovels in case you get stuck!) and camping gear and head inland for an unforgettable journey across massive dunes to set up camp and stargaze the night away under perfectly clear skies.

For those wanting a more tame adventure, you can opt for one of the several desert camps in the Wahiba Sands.

Trek In Oman’s Soaring Peaks In The al Hajar Mountains

Not far from Muscat sits the dry, arid peaks of the al Hajar Mountains. Trek to the top of Oman at Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest peak.

From Jebel Shams, you’ll have spectacular views down into Wadi Ghul a perfect way to end a day trekking to the summit is camping on the rim of Wadi Ghul. The ascent is steep and grueling all the way to the top. Plan for 10-12 hours for the ascent and descent.

Another more leisurely option is to trek around Jebel Akhdar from Al Aqor to Seeq, especially in springtime when the roses are in bloom. Note that Jebel Akhdar is only reachable by 4WD.

After a day exploring around the green mountain of Jebel Akhdar, I recommend spending a night at  Anantara al Jebel Akhdar Resort  and treat yourself to a night of luxury.

Go Robinson Crusoe On Masira Island

Wanting to explore what feels like a deserted island? Look no further than Masira Island. This is a true nature-lover’s paradise. Fringed by sandy and empty beaches, home to a jagged rocky inland, and crawling with wildlife you’ll find yourself hard-pressed to ever leave.

There are a few hotels and even a resort on the island for those wanting to sleep indoors, otherwise, you can pitch a tent just about anywhere on the island.

Masirah does have one paved road making a ring around the island, but a 4WD is recommended for accessing beaches. There are ferries from Shana’a on the mainland every day departing at 8 am, 12 pm, 3 pm, and 6 pm for 10 OMR per car with  National Ferries Company  and several departures per day on older ships for the same price that leave when full.

See Turtles Laying Eggs At Ras al Jinz

Ras al Jinz is the easternmost point of Oman as well as the Arabian Peninsula. From April to August thousands of endangered green turtles come to lay their eggs in the sand here at Ras al Jinz. Not to worry though- we saw a turtle laying her eggs at Ras al Jinz in November!

You will need to stay up late, as turtles laying eggs happens at night. Officially you need to be on a government-guided tour to see the turtles. Note that Ras al Jinz is one of the few places in Oman that camping is not allowed (for the protection of the green turtles).

It is possible to set up camp at nearby Ras al Hadd.

Explore Oman’s Magical Wadis

Imagine plunging limestone walls with crystal clear, neon turquoise waters filling the depth of the canyon. This, in a nutshell, describes Oman’s unforgettable wadis. Wadi Shab, Wadi Bani Khalid, and Wadi Tiwi are among the favorites for most travelers that traipse through Oman.

My personal favorite was  Wadi Shab . Take a small boat to the other opposite side of the wadi from the parking lot under the highway bridge and then start your trek.

You’ll eventually reach a swimming area where you’ll find locals and tourists alike going for a swim and picnicking on the rocks. From here make sure you swim upstream a ways where you’ll eventually come to a mound of large boulders in the wadi.

Swim through the narrow slit and prepare to be mindblown. There’s a waterfall inside the cave-like feature in the wadi. If you climb to the top of the waterfall you can join local boys cliff diving from the top.

Please note that Oman is a conservative country and when swimming outside of resort areas it is best to swim in a shirt and long pants for women as to not cause offense to the locals.

Swim In A Sinkhole At Bimmah

Bimmah Sinkhole  (Hawiyat Najm Park) is an absolute must-see for those making the journey from Muscat to Sur or further south. Legend has it the Bimmah Sinkhole was created by a falling star long ago (hence the local name of Hawiyat Najm), though the scientific cause to the sinkhole was the dissolution of deeper layers of limestone, which then collapsed yielding the unique and beautiful Bimmah Sinkhole we know today.

There is a stairway down to the lake at the bottom, and those with a wild hair can hoist themselves up on the ledges on the walls of the sinkhole and dive in— but do take care as no one really knows the depth of the water.

Plan the perfect trip:  Everything you need to know to visit Bimmah Sinkhole

Camp With The Genies On The Edge Of Wadi Ghul

Wadi Ghul, the Grand Canyon of Arabia cuts deep into Oman’s al Hajar Mountains. Locals believe that genies inhabit the wadi and come out at night time.

Take the marked Balcony Walk trail down from the village of al Khateem that meanders to the deserted hanging village of Sap that clings to the vertical cliff edge that offers a great day trek.

Camping is possible here, right on the edge of the cliff. Don’t miss sunset and sunrise here as golden light illuminating the craggy arid peaks all around are truly something magical to witness.

If camping isn’t you’re cup of shai- there are a few lovely resorts near Wadi Ghul.

Visit Remote Villages Along The Mountain Road In The Western Hajar Mountains

This winding, bumpy road inches perilously down the side of Wadi Bani Awf giving scenic views of the arid landscape around. You’ll need a 4WD to navigate the descent into Wadi Bani Awf as the dirt track here is steep and narrow.

Don’t miss the mountain oasis of Hatt, Sharfat al Alamin for stunning views from the highest point on the road, trekking in beautiful Snake Gorge, and last but not least the gorgeous terraced village of Bilad Sayt.

Take An Epic Oman Road Trip

Oman has been my favorite country to road trip in, by and far. If you want to explore on your own itinerary and timeline a road trip is the best way to do it. Driving in Oman is pretty mellow in comparison to other Middle Eastern countries and free camping is allowed almost everywhere.

Check out the  One Week Oman Road Trip Guide

Go Kiteboarding At Al Jazir

In Oman’s Dhofar region, just north of Salalah sits the perfect lagoon with just the right conditions for epic kiteboarding. Thanks to the Dhofar Mountains and near-constant winds, paired with the protection provided by the lagoon from the open seas gives al Jazir the perfect recipe for riding.

Head to Al Jazir between May and September for the best kiteboarding conditions. Even if kiteboarding isn’t your thing, everyone can agree that Al Jazir Lagoon is stunning.

Head to Qantab, Khubrah Canyon, La Gorgette, Wadi Daykah, and beyond for epic rock climbing offers. Cling to vertical cliffs over deep wadis or the open sea for an unforgettable adventure trip in Oman. There are climbs of various difficulties scattered throughout the country.

Getting Around

The best and easiest way to explore Oman is by private car rental. This gives you the ultimate freedom and flexibility in Oman. I recommend  Marks Tours  for 4WD rentals. A 4WD is a must for those wanting to explore the dunes, drive winding mountain tracks, and get off the paved roads.

It is possible to travel between main cities by bus, however, getting to many of the attractions outside cities will require taxis or tours for those who aren’t interested in self-driving. Hitchhiking is also possible but can prove difficult at times.

Accommodations

For those that don’t mind a little dirt and love spending the night under the stars, Oman will be a special place for you. Camping in Oman is a real treat.

Not to worry if you’re not the outdoorsy type, there are a scattering of great resorts around Oman. I recommend spending a night at  Anantara al Jebel Akhdar Resort  after a day exploring Oman’s fabled Green Mountain.

Adventure Tourism in Oman: Are you ready?

Are you ready to have an adventure.

Whether you want to travel across the globe or you just want to get away from the crowded, high-rise lifestyle of Dubai, Oman is ready to host your next adventure! Let us show you some of the places where boredom comes to die:

1. Majlis Al Jinn Cave

The Majlis Al Jinn, which means the meeting place of the Jinn, is the second largest known cave chamber in the world. The cave is located in a remote area around 100km away from Muscat, and an experienced driver and a 4X4 vehicle are a must to reach this remote destination. Only three strands of light penetrate the darkness, but it’s enough to allow you to see the hair-raising 120 meters drop and to appreciate this immense natural wonder. A professional caving company can provide the training necessary for you to repel, or abseil, down to the bottom of this massive cave through one of the three vertical entrances. The Majlis Al Jinn is also a coveted spot for the base jumping community. If you’re up for the challenge, we’d love to help make it happen. Contact us to add this stop to your customized tour of Oman!

2. Jebel Akhdar

Jebel Akhdar, with means “Green Mountain”, provides one of the most scenic stops in your tour of Oman. This section of the Al Hajar mountain range displays nature at its finest- with valleys, steep canyons, cliffs, plateaus and hiking trails, this destination has everything to offer for hikers ranging from novice to pro. Jebel Shams, the highest point in eastern Arabia, can be explored right here. Let your experienced driver take you to the best spots in the comfort of a 4X4 vehicle, and take the time to explore surrounding villages and meet the locals. Don’t miss this gem! Contact us today to create your perfect day on the mountain.

3. Wahiba Sands

The Wahiba Sands, named after the nomadic Wahiba tribe, is an opportunity to enjoy the emptiness and vastness of a desert sea. Let us take you on a roller coaster ride in a 4X4 dune bashing excursion, or jump out of the vehicles to enjoy some quality sand-boarding! Finish off your evening under the stars sipping tea with some locals, and enjoy a quality night’s sleep under a bedouin tent. Adventure awaits!

4. Wadi Shab

Drive a few hours away from Muscat to experience one of the most breathtakingly beautiful wadis (valleys) the country has to offer. Once your driver gets you as close as possible, it’s a short hike through an opening of palm trees to the matchless beauty of pristine, turquoise waters. The day will be yours as you explore waterfalls, wade through streams, climb rocks, and even dive off of the surrounding cliffs. It’ll be the best cliff-diving you’ve ever had, which is why the Redbull Cliff Diving World Series was held right here. Once you hit what looks like the “dead end”, you’ll be face to face with the famous keyhole. Take a breath and swim through a very narrow slit in the rock until you come out on the other side in a water-filled cave filled with other cliff diving opportunities. It’s the best water park you’ll ever experience, because it was created entirely by nature. Let us know if we can add this stop to your next tour!

One of Oman’s best kept secrets is that is has some of the best dive sites to explore. Learners and experienced divers alike will be awed by the array of marine life and colorful coral. Hiking In Oman: Guide To Best Hiking Trails In Oman

Oman is the land of mountains and without any doubt a hiking paradise for the avid adventure seeker. The country is home to the largest peak in the Arabian Peninsula and the second-largest Grand Canyon and cave in the world.

Telling from my personal experience, there is hardly any terrain in the country where you will not find mountains as a part of the landscape (except the desert, obviously!). Advanced hiking skills are not required for hiking in Oman as most trails are straight muddy or rocky paths in the mountains taking you to incredible views and giving a perfect taste of adventure within nature!

Jebel Akhdar

Location :  115km from Muscat in the city of Nizwa

Known as the ‘Green Mountain’ and a nature reserve due to its unique bio-diversity, Jebel Akhdar is the main source of agriculture and one of the most promising mountain peaks of the Al Hajar Mountain range. Hiking in Jebel Akhdar is relatively easy as well as paved roads and paths have been constructed by the government with many small local shops, cafes, boards and markers to help the visitors and hikers alike. All the visitors have to pass through a police check-post to reach the mountain (Note: it is just a basic check post and no license is required to visit the mountain).

Jebel Akhdar is famous for its extensive pomegranate farms, which is the biggest highlight of the hike. Hikers will walk through many small villages and pomegranate farms. Locals are very welcoming and you can get a free pomegranate drink in exchange for a smile with the local farmers! Apart from the natural bio-diversity, Jebel Akhdar offers incredible views of the valleys and the smaller mountains in Al Hajar mountain range. It is a must-do hike for any adventure seeker hiking in Oman!

Note: To reach the start point of the hike, it is mandatory to travel by a four-wheeler. If you have not hired one while coming to Nizwa, you can hire a local driver with a car available at the police check post

Jebel Shams

Location : 243km from Muscat, near the city of Nizwa

Jebel Shams, or ‘Mountain of Sun’, is the highest peak in the Gulf region standing tall at 3000 meters above the sea level with two summits; north and south. It also happens to be the second-largest Grand Canyon on earth. Also a part of the Al Hajar Mountain range, Jebel Shams offers an incredible yet a bit challenging hike for the adventure seekers hiking in Oman. There are three main viewpoints at the top of the mountain, which can be reached by crossing many unpaved rocky paths in the mountain. It is important to note that these paths are basically paved for the cars and not hikers, therefore, extreme cautions will be required while hiking.

Hikers will pass through different rocky terrains going uphill and downhill with views of small villages and valleys. Unlike Jebel Akhdar, there are no shops or cafeterias along the hiking trail, so you have pack lots of water and a bunch of snacks for hiking in Jebel Shams. The sunrise and sunset view at the top of Jebel Shams is something that is not to be missed! Overnight camping at the top of the mountain is very popular among local visitors and tourists alike. Who wouldn’t like to witness the sunrise and sunset from the top of the ‘Mountain of Sun’!

A viewpoint on Jebel Shams

Location : 150km from Muscat, near the city of Sur

Wadi Shab in Oman is one of the most popular and easily accessible hiking trails located in the Sharqiyah region. Meaning oasis in Arabic, Wadi Shab offers a rocky hiking trail going in between the mountains and eventually leading to a waterfall, cave and numerous pools of turquoise water where you can take a dip to beat the heat. It is an easy hike, however, due to extreme summers in the country; it is highly advisable to carry lots of water while hiking. The Wadi has been a popular spot for sports such as cliff diving in Oman.

The hiking trail goes through mighty rocky mountains with small and big pools of water where mules and donkeys can also be spotted relaxing in the water pools, therefore it should be in your list of hiking in Oman. Camping is possible but not really recommended as the place gets very deserted after the sunset.

Al wakan village.

Location : 135km from Muscat

Al Wakan Village is undoubtedly a hidden paradise in Al Batinah governorate of Oman located 2000 meters above the sea level which makes it is a unique spot for hiking in Oman. This mountain village offers mesmerizing views of terraced gardens overlooking the mighty mountains in the surroundings. Al Wakan Village is an agricultural village and hikers will get to see vast plantations of pomegranate, apricots, and grapes on the hike (Note: do not try to pluck any fruit without the consent of the local gardener). There are three hiking trails that take you from the bottom all the way to the watchtower at the top of the village.

These trails are marked with markers facilitating the hiker to move in the right direction. The easiest and the most accessible trail is a 700 steps hike which will take you directly to the watchtower. As the trail passes along many small houses of local farmers who are very friendly and will also offer fresh juice drinks to ensure you remain hydrated for the hike! A stream of freshwaters from the mountains also runs along the path. Feel free to fill your water bottles with the pure mountain waters. The sunset scenes from the highest end of the village are really dramatic and something which is not to be missed after the hike!

Hiking Trail in Wakan Village

Riyam-Muttrah hike

Location : Lies in the heart of the capital city of Muscat

The Riyam-Muttrah hike is a short and sweet hike lying just in the city center of Muscat; this hiking trail is a perfect spot for anyone looking for hiking in Oman but on short notice. It is a relatively easy hike and very popular among the residents so you will not be alone on the hiking trail particularly on the weekends. The hike starts with a series of rocky uneven steps which will gradually take you to the view of the old Muttrah Souq ( Old Market ), the main local shopping district in Muttrah. As you will climb further, views of the beautiful Arabian ocean with the corniche road running along it starts to become visible.

The steps eventually end at a viewpoint from where a sight of Mina Al Falah is visible. The view of houses constructed in the lap of mountains overlooking the Arabian ocean is indeed a refreshing sight. The hike then descends to an abandoned village where nothing except some fallen walls here and there can be seen. The hiking trail is managed by the Ministry of Tourism but you will not find any markers guiding the way throughout the hike, therefore it is advisable to keep your GPS turned on or accompany someone who is familiar with the hike.

Best time to hike in Oman

Oman is an extremely hot, humid and sunny country, which makes hiking in Oman very challenging. Hiking during the peak summer months from April to June is highly not advisable as the heat can get extremely dangerous and there is a big probability of getting a heat stroke while doing any outdoor physical activity. The months of July to September are very humid but hiking is surely possible.

However, do not forget to carry lots and lots of water and juices to keep you hydrated during the hike. The winter months of October to March are the best time for hiking in Oman.  However, during the winter months, the temperature at Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams can drop below zero at the highest points on the mountains so it is advisable to wear a warm jacket and gloves while hiking to the higher altitude places.

Such beautiful trails in such a magical country. Love the views from the Riyam-Muttrah trails. Love the sound of the Green Mountain and pomegranate farms. Really appreciate your tips about the best time of the year to hike. Detailed post. Thank you.

Thank you, Rosemary!

All those trails look incredible especially Riyam-Muttrah, your photographies are so beautiful! I never really thought about Oman before, but it seems to be an amazing place to visit now that I read your post. Definitely adding it to my bucket list.

Thank you so much, Lyne! I am glad you found my post helpful

I am not a very big fan of hiking and certainly didn’t think of Oman as hiking place but thank you for opening my eyes. All this trails are beautiful and inspiring.

Awesome to know that you got to know something new about Oman through my post!

Wow, I had no idea that Oman was so mountainous, or beautiful! I bet hiking here would be amazing. A hike through pomegranate fields?! THat sounds so cool!!

I look forward to seeing you visiting Oman soon, Maggie 🙂

Wow, I had no idea Muscat was sort of in a valley of mountains, but that photo you have from Riyam-Muttrah is just stunning. I love when big cities are located in such proximity to the mountains because I love doing city things and outdoorsy things equally! Wakan Village sounds fascinating, and that photo you included looks like something out of the Land Before Time or another children’s movie on dinosaurs or something!

Thank you so much, Diana! I’m glad you found this post useful. Muscat is a wonderful city and the landscape here is simply mindblowing! Ocean, mountain, desert; you name it, we have it here!

The Riyam-Muttrah hike seems easy & beautiful as well. It is in Muscat only, so is there any option of Gondola ride? I am not much of a hiker but Muscat is on my list, I can give the Riyam-Muttrah hike a try 🙂

Ahh, unfortunately there is no gondola ride to reach the top, however, it is a short and sweet hike and totally worth trying atleast once 🙂

I’ve been really curious to look into traveling in the Middle East, so it’s good to know about these hikes! Oman isn’t a place you run across many articles about. But dang, hiking through pomegranate fields? That doesn’t sound bad.

Awesome Dylan! I look forward to seeing you visiting Oman super soon 🙂

This is eye-opening! I had no idea that Oman is so pretty, has mountains and so many hiking opportunities! I thought it was a complete desert. I always wanted to visit this country but now I am even more intrigued!

Oman has a lot more than just deserts. Ocean and high rocky mountains can be found everywhere in the country!

I heard that hiking is supposed to be beautiful in Oman. I really like the view from the Riyam-Muttrah hike, it looks so picturesque. Thanks for sharing your experience!

You’re welcome, Elisabeth!

This is absolutely fantastic article. Never even knew how many options are there to hike in Oman. Would absolutely love to hike up to Jebel Shams. I am sure that the views are spectacular. Maybe I should plan something for next April!

Thank you so much, Polly! I am so happy to know you liked my article. I would absolutely love to see you visiting Oman very soon! April could be a bit warmer for a hike at Jebel Shams. Feb or March would be a better option though.

The 6 Best Oman Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights.

Oman is a Middle Eastern country located on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula and is bordered to the northwest by the United Arab Emirates, to the west by Saudi Arabia, and the southwest by Yemen.

This is not your usual country, and you will see why we say so as we dive deeper into the article. We will talk about the six best tours to discover the best of Oman easily, but before that, let’s get a glimpse of auspicious Oman.

A bit about its diverse landscape and natural beauty: Oman has unbelievable natural treasures ranging from the rugged Hajar Mountains in the north to the rolling dunes of the Empty Quarter in the south to its very diverse bird collection that seems to have come from three different continents, Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is a secret paradise for bird lovers and watchers looking for new species now and then.

But one of its best natural treasures is undoubtedly its people; Omanis are one of the most peaceful people in the world, and this is evident in the silent nature of most cities in the country, if not all of them. Do not be surprised when you are greeted with a bowl of fresh dates and an archy smile upon your arrival at your hotel.

Unlike many other Arab countries, Oman is gifted with miles of pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic desert landscapes. It is like a perfect combination of the dunes of Dubai, the marvelous beaches of Mexico and the giant mountains of Japan. That’s a full package and even more!

In its capital city of Muscat, you will find charming Old Towns, with winding alleys and historic buildings, as well as a bustling market that sells everything from spices and textiles to gold and silver jewelry.

One of Oman’s most famous attractions that you will find so interesting and soothing to watch is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in the heart of its capital city. This mosque is one of the largest in the world, with a capacity of over 20,000 worshippers. Well, this, to some extent, is not a surprise for a country that has 85% of its 5 million population as Muslims.

With all that we have said so far, we have not yet touched the history and culture of Oman. This ship-makers country is believed to have been one of the oldest habitats of mankind, with archaeological proof dating 100,000 years ago.

Yep, didn’t we tell you this is not your usual country? You can explore the city’s many museums and art galleries, including the Bait Al Zubair Museum and the Oman National Museum, to learn more about the history of the country in much detail.

And we can go on and on and on…

But we will leave the rest for your discovery and encounter. How about that?

For now, let’s tell you the biggest secret sauce to getting the most out of your trip to this tranquil country. The best way to get Oman’s deepest and most authentic experiences is to get on a group tour with friends and family, a partner, or even alone.

Experienced tour guides will lead your way to the best places, eventually giving you the best experiences you might have missed otherwise. From trouble-free preparations to comfortable explorations with your highly knowledgeable guides leading the way, you will surely have an epic time in Oman.

Without further ado, here are the six best tours to discover Oman with ease.

As you make your way to Old Muscat, you will have the opportunity to view the 16th-century Al-Mirani and Al-Jilani forts from outside, manifesting their medieval beauty. One of the highlights of your trip will be a visit to the Grand Mosque, located at the heart of the capital city, where you will witness the breathtaking beauty of this architectural marvel. Modesty is mandatory for everyone who visits the mosque, so men must wear long pants and shirts that cover their shoulders.

Women must be fully covered, including their heads, arms, and legs, and the dressing must not be tight, revealing the figure. Instead of thinking about the rules regarding the dress code as too demanding, please take it as a way to experience Muslim clothing. You might just be experiencing a day in the life of a Muslim woman or man.

Another unforgettable experience awaits you at the Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve. Here, you will have the opportunity to observe the endangered species’ nesting process, an experience that few people ever get to witness. You might be lucky to be counted as one. But whatever happens, you will have the chance to watch these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.

After a day full of worthy adventure, you will spend the night in a tent with a private bathroom but no AC (We hope you will adopt) in a desert lodge at Wahabi Sands. As you settle in for the night, surrounded by the beauty of the Omani desert, with the stars twinkling above you and the dunes stretching out as far as the eye can see, you will fall asleep without even realizing it.

As you take in the breathtaking scenery, the first stop will be at the Bimmah sinkhole, where you can take some stunning photos for your Facebook and Instagram feeds and even swim in the refreshing water if you are brave enough. Let’s see what happens.

We imagine your journey will begin with a relaxing swim and end at the enthralling Beach of Fins. If you miss swimming at Bimmah, why not try again here or walk along the long white sandy beach? The crystal clear waves of the Indian Ocean will make you want to dive in. The beach is ideal for enjoyable activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving. You can also try your hand at those.

We are confident that you will enjoy your time at the beach, but now it is time to go on to the wonderful Wadi Shab. The canyon gorge is a natural wonder, with palm palms and the sound of water falling from the mountains providing a tranquil ambiance that you will remember for the rest of your life. You can explore the wadi and climb its secret waterfalls to observe nature’s majesty.

The journey continues to the gorgeous site of Ras al Hadd, where you will be taken on an exciting tour of the Turtle Sanctuary in Ras Al Jinz. As you walk along the beach at night, you can witness one of nature’s most incredible phenomena: the nesting of giant sea turtles. You’ll wonder when you see these amazing creatures emerge from the sea and lay their eggs on the sand. These moments might be priceless, but they are usually witnessed by chance.

The next morning, you’ll have the chance to tour Sur, where you’ll be transported back to the age of the Arabian Dhow Factory. Traditional wooden Dhows are being built, and the historic strongholds are a true tribute to Oman’s rich history and culture.

This tour takes 4 people aged 15 to 80 years old and costs $1700 per person for 6 days of accommodation, meals, and transportation. It is also family-friendly and fully guided.

Oman has announced its intention to invest $31bn by 2040 in the sultanate’s tourism sector.

Azzan Qassim Al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Tourism, shared the government’s intention to boost investment toward driving tourism at a press conference in Germany before the start of ITB Berlin. The international travel trade show is on from March 5-7.

In 2023, the sultanate received four million visitors, up from 2.9 million in 2022, a rise of almost 38 per cent, Al Busaidi shared, saying it was a record-breaking achievement. Of these, 231,000 hailed from Germany, reflecting a rise of 182 per cent over 2022.

The Ministry of Heritage and Culture is focused on creating an environment conducive to tourism growth. The streamlining of the visa application processes, easing visa restrictions for citizens of over 100 countries and investing in infrastructure and attractions are all part of the process, the minister said. “We have ambitious plans for our tourism sector, with over $5.9bn of investment currently funnelled into more than 360 projects.”

Oman to invest Dh21.6 billion in its tourism sector

The ministry of heritage and tourism will invest in 360 projects, including infrastructure

An aerial view of Muscat city, at night.

Dubai: Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is set to invest $5.9 billion (Dh21.6 billion) in its tourism sector as part of its national tourism strategy 2040.

The ministry said it will invest in 360 projects, including tourism-friendly initiatives, investments in infrastructure, and tourist attractions. The investments would also focus on the 2050 net-zero emissions target as part of the efforts to preserve heritage sites and monuments, Azzan bin Qassim al Busaidy, under-secretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, said.

He made this comments at the World Travel Week – Middle East, which kicked off in Oman on Sunday.

“We are achieving this through the introduction of tourism-friendly legislation and enterprise-driven initiatives, investments in infrastructure and attractions, capacity building, the creation of specialized investment zones for tourism development and more,” Busaidy added.

The director-general of tourism promotion said the ministry hosted the third edition of World Travel Week to give companies specialized in adventure and luxury tourism an opportunity to meet counterparts from other countries as well as arrange introductory visits to touristic sites in Muscat.

The heritage sites chosen for delegate visits included the Sultan Qaboos Mosque in Salalah, Al Hisn palace, Al Hisn market, Al Baleed archaeological park, the land of Frankincense museum, Samhan mountain, Wadi Darbat, the Samharam archaeological park, Taqah castle, and Kofan heritage hostel.

UAE-Oman travel: Easing of visa restrictions makes border crossing faster

Travelling between UAE and Oman is now much easier and faster, after the signing of the MoU for borderless travel.

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) and the Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran Group) inked a deal to boost tourism between RAK and the Governorate of Musandam in Oman.

Bordering Ras al Khaimah, Musandam is a popular destination for UAE residents and tourists seeking water adventure sports.

“By signing this MoU, both entities aim to enhance cross-destination tourism through collaborative marketing efforts, improved transportation links, favourable visa arrangements for international tourists, and unique tourism packages. This initiative is underpinned by the geographical proximity of Ras Al Khaimah and Musandam, our shared Al Hajar Mountain range, and our deep-rooted cultural and historical ties, making this collaboration particularly meaningful,” said Raki Phillips, CEO of RAK Tourism Development Authority.

“We hope to create new opportunities for global travellers to experience both destinations more seamlessly,” he said.

The agreement was signed in November 2023 at the World Travel Market London.

“While UAE residents are required to apply for a visa online prior to their arrival in Oman, with the option of obtaining a visa upon arrival also available, a significant part of our collaboration is focused on easing border crossings. This initiative aims to simplify travel procedures, making it more accessible and less time-consuming for residents of both countries to travel between our regions,” Phillips told Khaleej Times in an interview.

In addition, one of the key goals of the agreement, he said, is to facilitate easier access for international tourists to explore both destinations “within a single journey”.

He said, “This is being supported by the development of favourable visa arrangements. Additionally, a unified GCC tourist visa was recently approved, which will further simplify travel across Gulf-member states once implemented, significantly benefiting tourists and boosting regional tourism, including in Ras Al Khaimah.”

Phillips also revealed that in line with the emirate’s goal to reinforce Ras Al Khaimah's reputation as a family-friendly destination, they will launch its summer campaign for 2024 at the ITB Berlin travel trade show in March, which includes a 'kids go free' offer.

Moreover, he added that the majority of hotels in Ras Al Khaimah offer a 'children go free' policy.

“Ras Al Khaimah is an ideal destination for families. Our extensive array of resorts offers family-friendly accommodations, including special rooms designed for families, a variety of children's amenities, engaging kids' clubs, numerous swimming pools, splash zones, and vast beachfronts. Beyond our family-friendly resorts, Ras Al Khaimah offers a wide range of activities suitable for families. From watersports to adventure-packed experiences in the desert and mountains,” he added.

In 2023, the Northern Emirate received a record 1.22 million overnight arrivals, up 8 per cent on 2022 numbers and bolstered by a significant 24 per cent year-on-year pick-up in international visitors.

“Looking ahead to 2024, our goal is not just to maintain this growth but to accelerate our efforts towards attracting over three million visitors by 2030, contributing to our long-term vision for tourism in the emirate,” Phillips said.

The 'nature emirate' is growing its hotel supply to match the increasing demand, and placing sustainability and accessibility at the heart of its growth strategy.

This joint marketing effort marks the beginning of numerous cross-destination promotions we plan with the Sultanate of Oman. It aims to highlight the diverse attractions and experiences available to international travellers in both destinations. Pioneering in the region, the campaign is testament to our strong synergy, aligning with the international trend towards frictionless, borderless travel, and enhancing accessibility and convenience for travellers.”

Haitham Al Ghassani, Director General for Tourism Promotion at Oman Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, commented: “We are excited to unveil our first collaboration with Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, which unlocks the outstanding tourism offering that our destinations have to offer families and travellers from all over the world. From adventure and sport to unearthing historic treasures, there is something for everyone in Musandam and Ras Al Khaimah, and with the mountains and the sea remaining cooler during the summer, there’s no better place to be.”
