Best time to travel to new york.

Visiting New York is worthwhile at any time of year, but I personally like the warm months best. Summer in New York can be very hot and humid. So, for many, the best times to visit New York is April and June, and September and October.

Spending Christmas in New York or enjoying the pre-Christmas season in New York City is also a wonderful experience.  The ice rinks are open, the city is beautifully decorated, and, if it snows, the dream vacation at wintertime is perfect!

Paying in New York

You can pay for almost everything with your credit card, even the smallest amounts. Credit cards are accepted in hotels, stores, restaurants, and bars. Don’t have one yet? Then, check out the best credit card to have in the USA here.

Best Way to Travel in New York

Finding your way around New York is quite easy, even if it doesn’t look like it at first. The streets’ checkerboard pattern makes finding your way around easy. These are the best ways to get around New York:

Metro / Subway: If you have longer distances ahead of you, then the Subway is your friend, because here you can travel really cheap. It’s easy to use! The MetroCard is available at every Subway station. You can buy single rides or the popular MetroCard for 7 days; that way you can travel for a week in New York at a fixed price. You can learn more about using the  Metrocard in New York here.

Taxi:  In New York, you can choose between the Yellow Cab and Uber. You can check out our tips and all the information you need to know in our following blog:  Taxi in New York City .

By bike: With many of the New York sightseeing passes (you can find out more about this budget tip in my New York Pass comparison ), the bike rental is included. We ourselves really love using New York’s Citi Bikes. This city bike program has over 1,000 stations throughout New York City, and it’s super-cheap. We’ll show you how it works in the Citi Bike New York article.

On Foot: You’ll be surprised how much walking you’ll do in New York. After all, there’s something to see on every corner. So be sure to bring comfortable shoes!

Where to Stay in New York?

Which neighborhood is best for you depends on several things: your interests, how close you want to be to the attractions and what your travel budget is. In the image below, I’ve drawn you my favorite neighborhoods of New York including the main attractions nearby.

And, on the subject of safety: In all of Manhattan, the Bronx , Brooklyn, and large parts of Queens, you don’t have to worry about being out and about in the evening. New York City is one of the safest cities in the world!

More than 100 hotels and over 70 neighborhoods to choose from –and after just 4 quick questions, I’ll show you which hotels in New York are best suited for you!

Where Should you Stay in New York?

where to stay in New york

Manhattan – it doesn’t get more central than this: Manhattan is the most famous borough of them all. Plus, it contains 95% of all the attractions New York is known for. Everything is within easy reach, and you are right in the middle of it all. On the other hand, the hotels are a bit more expensive than in Brooklyn or Queens .

Here, you can find my 33 hotel tips for Manhattan .

Brooklyn – urban and relaxed: For a long time, Brooklyn was the insider’s tip: now it’s “completely” normal neighborhoods. However, you’ll quickly notice one thing: life is much more normal, because it’s more of a residential area. It’s super relaxed, pleasant, and just as diverse as Manhattan. Above all, you can enjoy the Manhattan skyline from here!

Here, you can find my 20 hotel tips for Brooklyn .

Queens – the new trendy neighborhood: Queens is a bit more “normal” than Brooklyn is, but, lately, we’ve noticed that it is getting more and more gentrified. The hotels in Long Island City (not to be confused with Long Island!) are especially popular because they are cheaper compared to Manhattan—and they have a perfect connection to the Subway, which makes Queens a great alternative to Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Here, you can find my 20 hotel tips for Queens .

What to See in New York?

One thing to know in advance: just because there is so much to see in New York, a little planning makes absolute sense. For highlights like the Empire State Building ( here ), the Edge Hudson Yards observation deck ( here ) or the One World Observatory ( here ), I recommend buying the tickets online in advance. This will not only save you waiting time on site, but you can also be sure that you will actually be able to visit your desired sights.

👉 These are our 33 best attractions in New York .

These are my tips after more than 20 visits to New York:

  • Observation decks:  New York City has no less than five (!) major observation decks to offer, and each one is a dream in itself. My two favorites are The Edge Hudson Yards and the One World Observatory , because from here you have a sensational view of New York from above and you can see the Empire State Building . From the end of 2021, another cool option will be added with the glass One Vanderbilt . One more thing about the Empire State Building: It’s the most visited observation deck in New York, so it’s always busy. Avoid the crowds in the morning – and if you really want to go to the Empire State Building in the evening, choose Thursday, Friday or Saturday. During those times, a saxophonist plays on the observation deck. Important: book the Skip-the-Line-Tickets (you can do that here). Then, you can easily save 1-2 hours of waiting time!
  • Visit the Statue of Liberty : The trip from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty is super-popular. To save yourself long waiting times, make sure you take the first ferry of the day. Here, you can find the best Statue of Liberty Cruises right now.
  • Definitely take a boat tour , because seeing New York from the water is like being on vacation. Choices range from the free Staten Island Ferry or the NYC Ferry ($2.90 each way) to sailing tours (gorgeous) and the classic sightseeing tours that are included with all major New York passes.
  • Walk along the High Line from the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards .
  • Visit Times Square in the evening – that’s when it’s at its most impressive.
  • Relax in Central Park or Bryant Park .
  • Plan a maximum of three attractions per day . After all, you don’t want any sightseeing stress.

This itinerary contains over 50 spots and highlights of the city, including a map that shows you the best way to travel each day, taking you to or past the many big attractions. In addition, we‘ve added our favorite places, from great breakfast spots to start your day right to small bars and restaurants and hidden insider spots.

What to Do in New York?

For me, an unforgettable New York trip includes the following things in addition to visiting the main sights:

Go Shopping

New York is also really good for shopping. There are many small shopping spots and addresses, but also the big brands can often be found with flagship stores. If that’s not enough, you can go shopping in one of the outlets and flea markets of New York.

The best shopping areas in New York are Broadway, SoHo , Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. And, of course, 5th Avenue!

Avoid Times Square for shopping!

A real tourist trap are the stores around Times Square – they are not only overpriced, but also the quality is not right in most cases!

Here you can find our Guide to Shopping in New York  with everything you need to know!

Visit a rooftop bar.

I love the rooftop bars of New York . You can sit and relax, enjoy a sensational view of the city and listen to relaxing music. All this mixes with the so-typical sounds of the city in the background, and if you have something delicious to drink or eat on top of that, it can’t get any better! You can see where we like to go in our article on the 43 best rooftop bars in New York .

Visit a Broadway Show

New York is known for its many musicals and Broadway shows – most of which are performed in the Theatre District around Times Square. Here are our tips on the  best Broadway Shows in New York . If you already know which Broadway show you want to see, I recommend ordering the tickets in advance ( here ). If you’re still flexible, you can buy leftover tickets at TKTS in Times Square, for example.

Attend a Parade or Special Event

OK, hotel is booked, attractions are on the list, the myNY itinerary is ready, shopping spots are sighted and the first restaurants and bars are also noted. Now comes the last step on the list to the perfect travel planning for New York: the events, parades, and holidays.

They are the icing on the cake of every New York vacation and, therefore, could not be missed in our New York Travel Guide! Just check out our monthly specials that are relevant to you:  January , February , March , April , May , June , July , August , September , October , November and December .

Enjoying the Gastro Scene (in the Evening)

Now comes one of my favorite parts of planning our New York trips: the city’s many bars, restaurants, rooftop bars, and food markets. In our travel guide and insider guides on the website, we put a lot of emphasis on finding the best gastro spots and rooftop bars. So, feel free to browse through them, and if you like something, just add it to your myNY itinerary. Just click on the heart symbol, and you’re done!

The Very Best Time to Visit New York (by a local!)

Adventurous Kate contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I will earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks!

When’s the best time to visit New York? New York experiences all four seasons, and often temperature extremes — but I think the best time to visit New York is in the fall from September to November.

That said, that’s just one small part of the year — and it could be completely different for you. You might hate that time of year if you came for festivals, or outdoor dining, or the cheapest prices. (And if you have kids or work in education, you might not be able to come then at all.)

So I set out to create the best guide on the best time to travel to New York, completely with temperature, atmosphere, crowd level, and event information.

I lived in New York for several years until recently, and living there was one of the great joys of my adult life. I know the city extremely well, and this guide is full of tidbits that you only get after living awhile in New York.

Like just how hot the 96th St. 1-2-3 platform gets in August. Or just how bad the crowds are on Fifth Avenue in December.

Or the incredible feeling you get when taking part in an activity with a huge crowd of strangers, whether it’s a rare eclipse or a surprise Janet Jackson concert in your neighborhood.

In short — New York is a one-of-a-kind city, and you are going to have a wonderful time here, not matter what time of year you decide to go to New York. Let’s get to the guide!

Best Time to Visit New York

The best time to visit New York is during the fall months: late September, all of October, and early November. This is for three main reasons:

The weather is fantastic. Nice, warm and cool temperatures that are perfect for strolling around outdoors. Some days you need no jacket; some days just a light jacket is perfect. One big difference from spring is that it doesn’t rain as often during the fall.

Crowds have thinned out. New York’s busiest seasons are from June through August and Thanksgiving through New Year’s. Kids are back in school and many families are averse to traveling so early in the school year, and families comprise a decent percentage of New York tourists.

Prices have dropped. New York is always expensive, don’t get me wrong, but hotel prices are much lower in the fall lower than during the summer months and the peak season between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

And a bonus reason: fall colors. That’s just a bonus, in my opinion! You see the best fall colors in New York from mid-October to early November, peaking in late October. Don’t miss the fall foliage in Central Park, Prospect Park, and Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters.

I recommend visiting New York during the fall months , from late September through early November. May and June are nice, too.

In my opinion, the best month to visit New York is October , for beautiful weather and gorgeous fall colors.

There’s lots to do in New York year-round, but we love September for family trips because most kid-friendly Big Apple attractions are empty.

In the winter temperatures are frequently below freezing, especially in January , but usually hover between 28-45 F (-2-7 C).

Festivals occur year-round in New York but there are many great ones in the summer, especially June , as well as between Thanksgiving and New Years’.

New York Weather

New York gets every kind of weather you can imagine . It experiences all four seasons and the weather fluctuates throughout the year.

In the winter you have plenty of subzero days and major snowstorms; the spring growsinto warmer and warmer temperatures, but with decent rain; summer is very hot with high humidity, and the fall is warm-to-cool with mostly clear skies.

There are pros and cons to each season in New York. Let’s break down each season one by one.

Pink blossoms on a tree in bloom against a stone and brick building in NYC.

New York in Spring

Spring in New York is absolutely beautiful and a great time to visit . As long as you come during actual spring: early April through early June. March is still very much winter temperatures here.

Yes, New York has cherry blossoms, and they tend to bloom at the end of March or the beginning of April. They symbolize the beginning of warmer months ahead with their bright spring colors. Some of the best places to see cherry blossoms in New York are Central Park, Roosevelt Island, and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, which has a cherry blossom festival in April.

One of my favorite things to do in New York in the spring is to wake up early and take a long, leisurely walk through Central Park, enjoying the fresh cool air and the dogs enjoying off-leash hours.

It can be a cheerful time to visit after a cold winter, but many days can be rainy. The temperature is comfortable for walking around and not too hot or too cold. It’s good to have a light jacket and umbrella with you.

Also, you have those exceptionally warm days that pop up every now and then, usually in mid-April. I live for the first hot day of the year in New York because everyone empties into the parks and enjoys the glorious sunshine!

If you have a genie and can predict the future, THAT is the best time to go to New York — the first hot day of the year. But if you’re feeling lucky, aim for the last week in April.

The Manhattan skyline underneath a partly cloudy sky, buildings rising up in shades of blue and gray.

New York in Summer

Summer weather in New York is very hot and humid, which can be glorious, but also difficult to handle. Ah, New York in the summer is quite the contradiction.

On one hand, summer is when New York explodes into festivals and events, from Pride to the Mermaid Parade to the Jazz Lawn Party on Governor’s Island. There’s outdoor dining, rooftop parties, street festivals, and even time on the beach at Jacob Riis or the Rockaways.

On the other hand, summer can be miserable. The smell of garbage is particularly pungent in New York at this time of the year. Waiting for the subway can be on a platform 10+ degrees hotter than the temperature outside. And subway cars that have lost AC are their own brand of hell.

Honestly, I’m a big summer fan, but in New York I spend a lot of time visiting museums and doing indoor activities. I recommend doing the same, finding lots of places you can escape to if it gets too hot.

One of my favorite things to do in New York in the summer is to take the Staten Island Ferry. It’s the best free activity in New York City, and standing outdoors on the ferry will give you some lovely breezes.

Yellow Leaves behind a lamppost in Central Park, NYC.

New York in Fall

Fall is a spectacular time to visit New York. It’s the best of every world, as I mentioned above: comfortable temperatures for walking around and exploring; mostly clear skies and limited rain; colorful fall foliage; and smaller crowds and lower hotel prices than peak season.

One thing I’ve noticed in my years as a travel writer is that September and October are MAGICAL. This is when kids go back to school and parents don’t want to travel that early in a new school year — so places are marvelously empty of kids.

Every fashionista knows that fall is the best season of the year for fashion — and New York is one of the most interesting fashion cities on the planet. Whether you go to Bryant Park for the shows or stroll through the streets of SoHo, fall is THE time for exploring fashion in New York.

One of my favorite things to do in New York in the fall is to get out my camera and explore different neighborhoods and their local cuisines: Prospect Heights for Caribbean curries; Flushing for Hong Kong egg tarts; Arthur Avenue in the Bronx for Albanian burek.

(Pretty different than the Times-Square-Empire State Building-Brooklyn Bridge-High Line tourist attractions route, don’t you think?)

versus travel new york

New York in Winter

When you live there, winter in New York sometimes feels eternally long and bleak, but there’s nothing like the city under a fresh snowfall.

New York gets several major snowstorms during the winter months, most of them between early January and late March. (Though it’s not unheard of to have a snowstorm in December or even as early as November.)

This is absolutely gorgeous — New York under a fresh snowfall is so lovely to photograph, especially Central Park and any neighborhood with brownstones. But that only lasts a few hours, and if the snow is deep, the city can grind to a halt.

Should you visit New York in the winter? I always say that you should only come here if you know what our winters are like. If you’re from Chicago or Minnesota, come on in! You know what you’re getting into. Good winter boots are BEYOND essential.

But if you’re from Florida or Texas, I strongly urge you to come at another time. On the NYC subreddits there are always posts by travelers from warm climates who don’t know how to deal with the cold and aren’t enjoying their trip. (If this is you, go to Uniqlo or H&M and buy a bunch of winter gear. It will make it easier.)

Winter is also the cheapest time of year to visit New York — specifically early January through late March.

One of my favorite things I’ve ever done in winter is the no-pants subway ride! This event in January is organized over social media. Groups of participants ride a set route of the NYC subway together in full winter gear except pants, ending up in Union Square. Somehow it always ends up being the coldest day of the year, but that adds to the fun.

High Season and Low Season in New York

Generally speaking, high season in New York is during the summer months, from June through August. This is when you have the biggest crowds and the highest prices. There is also a second high season in New York between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, when New York goes all out for Christmas and the holiday season.

Some peak days in New York, when accommodation is at its most expensive, are New Year’s Eve, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

There are also some paradoxes during high season. On Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, the city empties out as New Yorkers head for the beach. This can be a very pleasant time in local neighborhoods that don’t get a lot of tourists.

Low season in New York is from January to March. During this time you have winter weather and lots of unpredictable snowstorms. If you’re used to cold winters, this can be a great time to visit, as you’ll be able to enjoy lower hotel rates, visit uncrowded museums, and get cheap Broadway tickets.

Best Month to Visit New York

What’s the best month to visit New York? Usually I say October, but that’s not the whole story.

It depends on who you are and what kind of trip you want to have.

I’ve broken down every month in New York into atmosphere, weather, and events.

January is the coldest month in New York and other than New Year’s, it’s not a busy time to visit. After the holiday season, prices drop and it’s one of the cheapest times of the year.

The average temperature in New York in January can range from 27 to 39 Fahrenheit (-3 to 4 Celsius). You can also expect snow in January, and likely multiple major snowstorms, in between a variety of sleet, rain, and wintry precipitation.

Events in New York in January include the Three Kings Day Parade in East Harlem, the world-famous Westminster Kennel Dog Show , and Broadway Week , when Broadway shows have 2-for-1 tickets.

New York in February

February is a slow month in New York and one of the cheapest months out of the year. The cold, snowy weather of February keeps tourists away.

Average temperatures in New York in February range from 28 to 41 Fahrenheit (-2 to 5 Celsius) and you can expect a few major snowstorms, along with various other wintry weather.

Events in New York in February include the Lunar New Year Parade in the city’s numerous Chinatowns, the beginning of the multi-month Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Gardens, and NYC restaurant week , when restaurants offer low-priced specials.

New York in March

March is the last of the cold months in New York and much more winter than spring. It’s still a cheaper time of year with fewer tourists because it’s too cold for spending much of the time outdoors.

You can expect average temperatures in New York in March to be 36 to 50 Fahrenheit (2 to 10 Celsius). There is usually at least one snowstorm in March as well, sometimes more than one, and the weather still feels like winter through the end of the month.

Events in New York in March include the St. Patrick’s Day Parade along Fifth Avenue, the New York International Children’s Film Festival , and the Macy’s Flower Show in their flagship store on 34th Street.

New York in April

April is when New York starts to awake into spring, which makes it a lovely time to visit New York. In the early days of April, you can find cherry blossoms blooming and colorful flowers all around. Temperatures are moderate, though you may have a few cold and hot days mixed in.

Weather-wise, it can be a bit all over the place — some rainy days, some sun, some foggy mornings, a lot of cloudiness — but the weather is warming up and spring has sprung.

Average temperatures in New York in April range from 45 to 61 Fahrenheit (7 to 16 Celsius), though you’ll probably enjoy one or two super-warm days near the end of the month!

Events in New York in April include the New York Easter Parade along Fifth Avenue, Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden , and Earth Day , which brings in a variety of events.

New York in May

May is a great month to visit New York, especially if you like flowers. Spring is in full effect, the flowers are lovely and temperatures are comfortable for being outside. It’s just before summer begins and tourists make their way to the city, so May is the perfect time to beat the major crowds.

You can expect the average temperature in New York in May to be around 54 to 72 Fahrenheit (12 to 22 Celsius).

Events in New York in May include Bronx Week , celebrating everything about the northernmost borough; NYCX Design , showcasing interesting designs of all kinds, and the Ninth Ave International Food Festival in Hell’s Kitchen.

New York in June

June marks the start of summer in New York, and if you have your heart set on a New York summer trip, we recommend June over hotter, more humid July and August. Early June is much more spring-like and you’l experience more rain, but by late June, sizzling summer has set in.

You can expect temperatures in New York in June to be around 64 to 79 Fahrenheit (18 to 26 Celsius), and for it to be much warmer toward the end of the month than the beginning of the month.

Events in New York in June include NYC Pride , a full and boisterous celebration of all things queer; the costume-filled Coney Island Mermaid Parade , and the New York Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors’ Island.

New York in July

July is the hottest month in New York, and there are plenty of tourists in the city at this time. You can expect humid, sticky weather that can get uncomfortable for spending much of your time outdoors.

The average temperature in New York in July ranges from 68 to 84 Fahrenheit (20 to 29 Celsius), and the humidity can make it feel even hotter.

Events in New York in July include the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island; Shakespeare in the Park , with performances in Central Park, and Harlem Week , a monthlong celebration of New York’s coolest neighborhood.

New York in August

August in New York is another hot and humid summer month. It’s also a month when many New York’s escape the city, so it might have a less-crowded feel in less-touristy neighborhoods. Tourist crowds begin to slowly disperse by the end of the month.

The average temperature in New York in August can range from 68 to 82 Fahrenheit (20 to 28 Celsius).

Events in New York in August include the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows in Queens, the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in the East Village and Harlem, and the US Open in Flushing Meadows, Queens.

New York in September

September in New York marks the start of fall and is one of the best months of the year to visit NYC. The air is a comfortable temperature, there are fewer tourists in the city, and the leaves start changing color. It’s a wonderful time of year and when New York is at its best.

Average temperatures in New York in September range from 61 to 75 Fahrenheit (16 to 24 Celsius). Early September is much more like summer than fall.

Events in New York in September include the Festival of San Gennaro , the patron saint of Naples, in Little Italy; the Armory Show , one of the world’s major contemporary art shows; and the fall edition of Broadway Week , when Broadway shows have 2-for-1 tickets.

New York in October

October is the best month to visit New York: full stop. It’s at the peak of fall, the leaves are all different colors, and everyone seems to be in a great mood. Prices and tourist levels begin to slowly drop and it’s the perfect weather for walking around outdoors.

You can expect average temperatures in New York in October to be around 50 to 64 Fahrenheit (10 to 18 Celsius).

Events in New York in October include the New Yorker Festival , where intellectual leaders come to give talks; New York Comic-Con , celebrating all things geeky; and of course Halloween, including the world-famous NYC Village Halloween Parade .

New York in November

November in New York is very much an in-between time of year. Fall is ending and winter is just beginning. You won’t really need to worry about snow at this point, unless there’s a rogue flurry, but it will start cooling down fast.

November can be a good time of year to visit New York because it’s not quite too cold to spend time outdoors. The Thanksgiving holiday, however, brings peak crowds and pricing.

You can expect the average temperatures in New York in November to range from 41 to 54 Fahrenheit (5 to 12 Celsius).

Events in New York in November include the New York City Marathon , which draws runners and spectators from around the world; the NYC Comedy Festival , which draws tons of big names; and of course the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade .

New York in December

December in New York is cold, but rarely very snowy. Some people think the best time to visit New York is during the Christmas season, so get ready for high prices and huge tourist crowds! If you enjoy the holidays, it can be a great time to visit New York, but it will be too cold to spend all of your time outdoors.

You can expect average temperatures in New York in December to be around 32 to 43 Fahrenheit (0 to 6 Celsius).

Events in New York in December include the Rockettes’ Radio City Christmas Spectacular ; the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting ; and New Year’s Eve in Times Square .

Best Festivals in New York

New York throws some great festivals, especially in the summer and during the holidays. People from all over visit New York just to experience some of the festivals that take place each year.

Honestly, there are so many different festivals that we couldn’t possibly include them all in this post. Instead, here’s an overview of the best and biggest events of the year:

NYC Pride : In June, millions of people take place in NYC Pride, a series of events celebrating the LGBTQ community, culminating in a parade through downtown Manhattan. Nobody does pride like New York City!

Halloween: The New York City Village Halloween Parade takes place on Halloween night, October 31st, each year in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. It’s a great opportunity to get creative and dress up in costumes and enjoy the parade and parties all around New York.

Jazz Age Lawn Party : Located on Governors Island in June, this weekend-long event celebrates New York City’s prohibition era. It’s a fun opportunity to travel back in time, dress as someone from the 1920s, and enjoy an exciting and informative event related to American history.

Coney Island Mermaid Parade : Held in June on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, the Mermaid Parade is the largest art parade in the United States. It’s an unforgettable event and a great place to let loose and discover your inner sea creature.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade : Occurring on the fourth Thursday in November, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is the world’s largest parade and famous for its enormous balloons and performances on parade floats.

Christmas: New York gets into the holiday spirit from Thanksgiving to New Years’ Day. Around Thanksgiving, you can find Christmas markets, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, shows, lights, and displays throughout New York. (Pro tip: the best place to see Christmas decorations is Dyker Heights in Brooklyn. They go ALL OUT.) The events that take place make it an exciting time to visit.

Best Time to Visit New York with Kids

Is New York a good destination to visit with kids? Absolutely. New York is one of the safest big cities in the US and it’s unparalleled in terms of fun kid-friendly activities. If you take your kids here, they will remember it forever.

The great thing about New York is that it can be fun to visit any time of year! The best time to visit with kids is either in the spring or fall when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold and there are fewer tourists.

Here’s a New York family travel hack: if you homeschool or follow a non-traditional school schedule, September is when the rest of the world is back at school. Get ready to enjoy kid-friendly attractions without the crowds.

Cheapest Time to Visit New York

The cheapest time to visit New York is during the winter months: January, February, and March. Accommodation are at their lowest prices. Flights and trains tend to be cheap, too, outside of holiday weekends like Martin Luther King Day. And a lot of Broadway shows have cheap tickets available (nope, not Hamilton so much, but pretty much anything else).

However, keep in mind that New York is cheap for a reason: winters here are harsh. As I wrote in my What NOT to Do in New York post, if you’re from Minnesota, you know what you’re getting into. If you’re from Texas, you’re going to struggle.

Overall Best Time to Go to New York

Overall, I think October is the best month to visit New York — but if you have leeway, late September, all of October, and early November are the best time to go to New York. You will absolutely love the big city at this time of year.

New York Pass Comparison

Which city sightseeing pass should you buy.

Latest update: March 6, 2024

In a nutshell

  • There are 4 city sightseeing passes with which you can save time and money.
  • There are time-based passes (for as many attractions as you want in a limited amount of time) and attraction-based passes (for a certain number of attractions).
  • If you want to see as many attractions as possible , we recommend the New York All-Inclusive Pass or the New York Sightseeing Pass .
  • The All-Inclusive Pass or the New York City Pass are the best choice if you want to see the most important sights in a short amount of time.
  • If you want to visit the major sights without any stress , you should pick the Sightseeing Flex Pass , Explorer Pass or New York City Pass.

In our article we’ll show you which New York passes are available, what advantages and disadvantages they have and which one is the best for you.

Our recommendation for those in a hurry: this is the best New York pass

In this article, we compare all of the New York passes in-depth and show you through detailed sample calculations which pass is the best choice for each type of traveller. If that’s too much information for you though, we can totally understand that.

That’s why, for those of you in a hurry, we’ll start right away with a very brief summary of the article and answer the question: which New York pass is the best?

#1 The best New York pass if you want to see as many attractions as possible:

Best choice: New York All-Inclusive Pass or New York Sightseeing Pass

If you’d like to see as many attractions in New York as possible, the New York All-Inclusive Pass is the best option according to our calculation.

But the New York Sightseeing Pass hardly does any worse here, so it’s worth comparing the included attractions and matching them to your personal agenda.

Depending on how many sights in New York you’d like to visit and how much time you have, you can save more than a hundred dollars with the New York All-Inclusive Pass.

You can buy the New York All-Inclusive Pass here You can buy the New York Sightseeing Pass here

#2 The best discount pass if you want to see the most important sights quickly (in 3 days):

Best choice: New York All-Inclusive Pass or New York City Pass

If you want to see the most important sights in a short amount of time, the savings aren’t very high with any of the passes.

In this case, you can think about whether you might want to buy your tickets individually instead. You’ll still have the most savings with the New York City Pass here, which we always like to use ourselves.

You can buy the New York City Pass here

If you’d like to use the Hop-on-Hop-off-busses as well and rent a bike in Central Park, then the savings with the New York All-Inclusive Pass and the New York Explorer Pass are the biggest.

#3 The best New York pass if you leisurely want to see the most important sights:

Best choice: Sightseeing Flex Pass, Explorer Pass or New York City Pass

If you want to give yourself a little more time (e.g. 5 or 7 days) and would rather visit the most important sights in New York a little more gradually, you also have the choice between three passes.

The differences of savings between these three passes are not very great. It really just depends on which sights you’d like to see the most. Simply take a look at what’s included in each pass and compare it with your personal to-do list.

You can buy the Sightseeing Flex Pass here You can buy the Explorer Pass here You can buy the New York City Pass here

#4 If you only want to see very few attractions

Best choice: buy individual tickets instead of a New York pass

If you’d only like to visit a very few selected attractions or want to decide what you’ll see on short notice and prefer to be flexible, a pass is generally not worth it.

To avoid having to stand in never-ending lines everywhere you go, we’d recommend that you always get your individual tickets online.

Now you know which passes are the best choice. If you also want to know exactly why that is, then keep reading the rest of our great New York pass comparison. If our brief summary was enough for you, we’re happy to have helped.

How do the New York passes work?

The New York passes are offered specifically for tourists. Maybe you’ve already seen something similar in other cities. These passes are often called City Cards as well.

You buy the passes for a certain amount and can then use them to visit different sights, museums and attractions . Besides that, you can take part in numerous guided city tours for free and take various bus and boat rides .

There are two types of New York passes:

#1 Time-based passes

There are passes that are valid for a specific amount of time , e.g. for 3, 5 or 7 days. In this time, you can go to all of the sights, tours and attractions that are included in the pass.

#2 Attractions-based passes

The second type are passes that can be used for a certain number of sights and attractions . So you buy these passes for 5, 7 or 10 attractions, for example, and are more flexible time-wise.

All of the New York passes now work on your mobile phone too. You used to have to pick up the passes somewhere, which was always a little time-consuming.

Today, you’ll simply get an email with a mobile pass after your purchase. You can then comfortably present it on your smartphone at all sights. You don’t necessarily need internet when on the go, as you can easily save your pass and then show it offline as well.

Alternatively, there’s also the possibility of printing out the pass yourself. Anyone who doesn’t have a smartphone or doesn’t trust their battery-life can choose this option. In any case, there’s no annoying pick up on-site.

What New York passes are there?

In most cities there’s only a single City Card. In New York, there are four offers to choose from. There are actually five, because one of the passes is available in two very different options. That doesn’t make it any less difficult, but that’s what our New York pass comparison is for.

In the following table, you’ll find an initial overview of the available passes. You’ll then find more detailed information about every pass, as well as the advantages and disadvantages.

#1 The New York All-Inclusive Pass

The New York All-Inclusive Pass is one of the most popular and extensive passes for New York.

versus travel new york

What does the New York All-Inclusive Pass offer?

The New York All-Inclusive Pass enables access to more than 100 attractions , such as:

  • Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, One World Observatory and Statue of Liberty
  • The new observation deck Edge
  • Around 30 museums
  • 1 day Hop-on Hop-off busses with Big Bus
  • Boat rides with Circle Line
  • Numerous tours

What does the New York All-Inclusive Pass cost?

You can find the prices for the New York All-Inclusive Pass in the following table.

On the website of the New York All-Inclusive Pass, there’s a year-round sale. That means that you don’t actually have to pay the regular prices for the pass, there’s always around 20 to 30% discount on the regular price.

We’ve therefore written the reduced prices directly on the overview as well:

Beware of supposed discount codes for the New York All-Inclusive Pass: discount codes for the New York All-Inlusive Pass circulate on some websites that allow you to get a 20% rebate off the pass. This discount is only on the original price of the pass though. Because the prices on the site are always reduced anyways, sometimes you’ll pay more with a discount code than without.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of the New York All-Inclusive Pass:

  • Very large selection of attractions
  • The longer the pass is, the cheaper it is per day

Disadvantages of the New York All-Inclusive Pass:

  • Only one day Hop-on Hop-off-Bus
  • Slightly non-transparent pricing

Our verdict on the New York All-Inclusive Pass

The New York All-Inclusive Pass is especially worth it if you’d like to visit a lot of attractions or want to go on guided tours.

If you want to see only a few select museums and sights, it won’t get any cheaper with the New York All-Inclusive Pass.

But if you want to visit a ton of attractions, you can save over a hundred dollars with the pass.

You can buy the New York All-Inclusive Pass here

#2 New York Sightseeing Pass

Along with the New York All-Inclusive Pass, the New York Sightseeing Pass is the most extensive of all the New York passes.

What does the New York Sightseeing Pass offer?

More than 100 attractions are included in the New York Sightseeing Pass, such as:

  • Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, Statue of Liberty and One World Observatory
  • The new viewing platform Edge is included in the Sightseeing Pass.
  • Almost 30 museums
  • 1 day Hop-on Hop-off busses from Big Bus
  • Large selection of boat rides

What does the New York Sightseeing Pass cost?

The New York Sightseeing Pass is the only pass that exists in two different variations :

1. The normal Sightseeing Pass, also called the Day Pass, which is valid for a certain number of days . On these days, you can use all of the attractions.

2. Alternatively, you can opt for the Flex Pass. With this, you decide how many attractions you’d like to visit with the pass beforehand. You then have 30 days to visit these attractions.

Advantages of the Sightseeing Pass:

  • In all, the best offers of all passes
  • Empire State Building and One World Trade Observatory are included
  • All popular museums are included

Disadvantages of the Sightseeing Pass:

  • The Sightseeing Pass is expensive
  • The two different price models can be confusing

Our verdict on the New York Sightseeing Pass

The New York Sightseeing Pass is definitely the most extensive of all the passes , and with the two pricing schemes, the Day Pass or the Flex Pass, the pass is an interesting option for almost all travelers .

Anyone who’d like a little more flexibility and who doesn’t want to visit 3 attractions per day would be well advised with the Sightseeing Flex Pass.

You can buy the Sightseeing Pass over the booking platform GetYourGuide. It’s usually a little cheaper there.

#3 New York Explorer Pass

versus travel new york

What does the New York Explorer Pass offer?

The New York Explorer Pass includes more than 95 attractions , such as:

  • 1 Day Hop-on Hop-off busses with Big Bus can be chosen as an attraction
  • Various boat rides

What does the New York Explorer Pass cost?

With the New York Explorer Pass, you don’t decide on a certain number of days, but rather on a certain number of attractions , which you can visit within 60 days.

Advantages of the Explorer Pass:

  • All major museums in New York are included
  • Fair pricing: you only book as much as you need
  • No time stress, since it’s valid for 60 days
  • Empire State Building and One World Observatory are included

Disadvantages of the Explorer Pass:

  • Hop-on Hop-off busses are only bookable as an attraction, but not part of the standard package

Our verdict on the New York Explorer Pass

The New York Explorer Pass is a good option for anyone who doesn’t want to visit countless sights and museums .

Through it’s simple pricing scheme , you can figure out very easily whether the pass is worth it for you. Almost all of the important sights are included in the pass, so you’ll be all set for your New York trip.

The Explorer Pass is very similar to the Sightseeing Flex Pass. The savings with each pass are often nearly the same.

Both passes are very good options. If you want to save every dollar you can, you should calculate exactly which pass is cheaper.

You can buy the Explorer Pass here

#4 New York City Pass

The New York City Pass is the smallest of the five New York passes , but it can still be worthwhile.

New York Citypass

What does the New York City Pass offer?

8 attractions are included in the City Pass, of which you can visit 5 .

Two of them are set. For the other three attractions, you have a choice between two options for each:

  • Empire State Building
  • American Museum of Natural History
  • Top of the Rock OR Guggenheim Museum
  • The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island OR boat ride with the Circle Line
  • 9/11 Memorial and Museum OR Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

What does the New York City Pass cost?

The pricing scheme of the New York City Pass is very easy. There aren’t any price scales, like with the other passes. The pass simply costs 121 dollars .

After you visit the first attraction with the pass, you have 9 days to see the rest of the sights and museums.

Advantages of the City Pass:

  • Simple pricing
  • Many important sights are included
  • High flexibility because of the long validity period of 9 days
  • The only pass with which you can visit the Empire State Building twice (day and night)

Disadvantages of the City Pass:

  • No Hop-on Hop-off bus
  • One World Trade Center and the Museum of Modern Art are not included

Our verdict on the New York City Pass

The New York City Pass is an ideal choice for anyone who’s looking for a simple and uncomplicated pass and doesn’t want to busy themselves with countless attractions and options.

Because the attractions are more or less fixed and only a few possible variations exist, it’s relatively easy to decide whether the pass is of interest.

If you want to visit all 5 attractions, the City Pass is a good option. If one of the attractions doesn’t interest you, the pass is generally still a good choice. If two or more attractions don’t interest you, then the City Pass isn’t for you.

Differences of the New York passes

We’ve now introduced the different New York passes. Since that’s a lot of info to take in all at once, in this section, we’d like to sum up the significant differences and similarities of all the New York passes.

That way you’ll get a better impression of which New York pass you should buy and which ones aren’t worth it for you.

Difference #1: time-based or attraction-based

To start with, there are two types of New York passes:

  • Passes that are valid for a specific amount of time. In this time, you can visit all of the attractions included in the pass.
  • Passes that are only valid for a certain number of attractions.

Both types of passes have their advantages and disadvantages. You can see which pass works by which model in this summary:

Time-based passes:

  • New York All-Inclusive Pass (1 to 10 days)
  • New York Sightseeing Pass (1 to 10 days)

Attraction-based passes:

  • New York Sightseeing Flex Pass (2 to 12 attractions)
  • New York Explorer Pass (2 to 10 attractions)
  • New York City Pass (5 attractions)

The time-based passes are especially worth it if you want to see as many attractions as possible . The longer the validity of the pass, the cheaper it becomes per day.

Besides that, these passes are a good choice if the additional offers , such as bike rentals, city tours or boat rides, are important to you. In these cases, you usually get away cheaper with a time based pass.

Those passes where you decide on a fixed number of attractions are especially recommended if you only want to visit the most important sights in New York and want to remain as flexible as possible.

Difference #2: included attractions

The New York passes don’t all include the same sights and attractions. For most travelers, the most important difference is surely the tickets for the famous lookout points in New York.

If you’d like to see very specific museums or do specific activities, it’s worth checking beforehand whether these activities are included in each of the New York passes.

So that you don’t have to do the strenuous work of searching for all this information, we will show you which attractions are included in the passes in the following table. Alongside the must-sees, we’ve also included other very popular attractions, so you can get a good overview.

As you can see, the Sightseeing Pass is something like the all-around worry-free package. All of the important attractions are included here.

Difference #3: Hop-on Hop-off busses

A significant difference between the passes is the use of the Hop-on Hop-off busses. Many travelers really like to use this mode of transportation to explore a city like New York.

The busses go along a fixed route and generally stop at all points relevant to tourists. With a ticket for the busses, you can get on or off at any time , so you can conveniently get from one sight to the next.

What’s more, there’s an audio commentary on the busses. So you can use these busses either for a classic city tour, or really just to get from one attraction to the next.

There are two big providers of these bus tours in New York: Big Bus and Grayline. Both companies each offer two different routes through Manhattan. Grayline also operates a further line that brings you to the most important places in Brooklyn.

If you’d like to use these busses, then we suggest the New York Sightseeing Pass , the New York All-Inclusive Pass , and the New York Explorer Pass . All three offer the Big Bus Hop-On Hop-Off Tour with two different routes, valid for one day

The City Pass does not offer any Hop-on Hop-off busses.

Which New York Pass is suitable for whom?

Now we of course want to answer the question of all questions: which New York pass is the best?

Needless to say, we can’t give the ultimate answer here, since not every New York pass is the best option for every person.

So we’ve put together three different types of travelers and our recommendation for the best New York Pass for each type of traveler .

These are the types of travelers:

  • Those who want to visit as many ticketed attractions as possible
  • Those who quickly want to visit the most well known sights
  • Those who want to visit the most well known sights calmly

Traveler #1: as much as possible

Are you one of the travelers who wants to see as much as possible in New York? Then the time based New York passes are interesting for you.

A typical itinerary could look like this:

Empire State Building ($48) Top of the Rock ($44) One World Observatory ($45) Edge ($44) 9/11 Museum ($28) MoMA ($25) Guggenheim Museum ($25) Museum of Natural History ($23) Bicycle rentals in Central Park ($25) Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus tour ($60) Boat ride, for example with Circle Line ($35) 2 further attractions according to your interests (ca. $60) 2 guided tours ($70) Total price: $532

In total, that’s 15 attractions, which you can manage well over 7 days. For all of that, you’d have to spend around 530 dollars for individual tickets.

In the following table, you can see how much you’d save with one of the New York Passes.

Note : the New York City Pass isn’t made for this type of travel, since they both only include relatively few attractions. We’ve therefore not included it in this table.

If you want to see a ton of attractions in New York and also have enough time (in our example, 7 days), then the New York All-Incusive Pass is the best option for you.

The savings with the New York Explorer Pass and the New York Sightseeing Flex Pass is only a little lower, so it’s worth taking a look at the included attractions. Your own itinerary will probably look a little different than our example itinerary.

Traveler #2: quickly see the most important sights

If you’d like to visit as many attractions as possible in New York in as little time as possible, we’ve put together a small example itinerary that you can be done in three days .

If you’re really fast, you can probably even complete it in 2 days, but then it’d be really stressful. So we’d prefer to base it on 3 days.

For us, the following attractions are some of the highlights in New York:

Empire State Building ($48) Top of the Rock ($44) One World Observatory ($45) 9/11 Museum ($28) Two museums, for example Met, MoMA or Guggenheim ($50) Boat ride, for example with Circle Line ($35) Total price: 250 dollars

Optional: Bike tour through Central Park with a rental bike ($20) Optional: Hop-on Hop-off bus tour ($60) Total price with Hop-on Hop-off bus und bike rental: $330

In retail sales, you’d pay a total of 250 dollars for the most important sights if you don’t incude the Hop-on Hop-off busses and would rather explore Central Park by foot. If you’d like to use the busses and to go through Central Park on a bike, you’re up to 330 dollars.

Why isn’t the Statue of Liberty included? We find that the Statue of Liberty isn’t really worth it if you don’t have a lot of time in New York. The trip to the island is relatively time consuming. So we’d instead suggest a boat tour that also takes you very close to the statue. That’ll save time and is just as impressive.

In both of the following tables, we’ve listed how much you’d save for all passes – both with and without a bus ticket and a bike rental.

Savings without Hop-on Hop-off bus and bike rental:

Without the Hop-on Hop-off bus, the New York Explorer Pass , the New York City Pass and the New York Sightseeing Flex Pass are the best options.

Depending on which attractions are the most important to you, another one of the passes could be a good choice. The differences of savings aren’t so big here that we could make an ultimate recommendation.

Savings with Hop-on Hop-off bus and bike rental:

Note : The New York City Pass doesn’t offer the Hop-on Hop-off tours or bike rentals. We therefore haven’t factored it into this table.

If you’d also like to use the Hop-on Hop-off buses and would like to rent a bike in Central Park, then either the New York All-Inclusive Pass or the New York Explorer Pass  is the cheapest option.

Traveler #3: see the most important sights without any stress

We like to see all of the important attractions in a city, but we don’t like to do it in a rush.

We also sometimes enjoy just wandering through the streets and neighborhoods of a city, instead of rushing from one attraction to the next. Just the same, we of course want to see the major highlights.

So we would rather distribute the attractions mentioned above across a longer time period , for example, 5 or 7 days.

For this scenario, we’ve also created two tables in which we show you which pass is the best solution for you then.

Savings without Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus and bike rental:

With the unhurried options, the savings aren’t so huge , as with the fully packed 3 day itinerary. The City Pass , the Sightseeing Flex Pass and the Explorer Pass are very close to one another here.

Savings with Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus and bike rental:

Note : The City Pass isn’t taken into account in this table, since it doesn’t include buses or bicycles.

Because the Hop-on Hop-off tours and bike rentals are relatively expensive, the savings are higher again. The New York Explorer Pass or the Sightseeing Flex Pass are once again the most lucrative here. You can also save a couple of bucks with the New York All-Inclusive Pass .

In our example, the Explorer Pass was a little better than the Sightseeing Pass.

New York without a pass

Does there absolutely have to be a New York Pass? Of course not! You can also discover the best attractions in New York without a pass.

If you don’t plan on visiting a lot of ticketed attractions , we’d suggest that you do it without a pass. You can also jump the line for the ticket desk at most attractions, even without a pass, by booking your tickets online ahead of time. We’d definitely recommend doing that.

You do always save some money with the passes, but with just a few sights, the savings usually aren’t so high. It’s then better to stay flexible and go without a pass.

In the following table, we’ve shown you an overview of which ticket you can buy beforehand online, also without using any of the passes.

Frequently asked questions

To conclude, we’ve put together the answers to frequent questions about the different passes for you.

Do you have another question? Then just write a comment to us below and you’ll receive an answer from us very shortly.

Do the New York passes also work for the subway?

In many cities, you can also use the City Cards for public transportation. Unfortunately, that’s not the case in New York and actually not with any of the providers.

To use the subway in New York and public busses, you have to buy a separate metrocard.

Are there reduced passes for kids?

Yes, for all of the New York passes that were introduced here, there’s also a reduced option for kids. Little kids (usually up to 3 years) are usually free.

How do I get my pass after ordering it?

You used to have to pick up the passes in New York, which was time consuming. Luckily that isn’t so anymore. Nowadays, you receive your pass by email directly after your purchase.

You can then just show your pass on your smartphone at each attraction. If you don’t have a smartphone, you can also easily print out the passes.

Are the passes cheaper on site?

No, you always get the best prices online.

Can I visit individual sights more than once with the pass?

No, unfortunately that’s not possible. You can only visit each attraction once with your pass.

Only exception : with the City Pass, you can go up the Empire State Building twice in one day, once in the morning and once in the evening.

We drew a detailed conclusion at the very beginning of our New York pass comparison. So here’s just a very brief summary again:

Cheapest pass with as many attractions as possible:

New York All-Inclusive Pass New York Explorer Pass Sightseeing Flex Pass

Cheapest pass for the most important sights in 3 days:

New York All-Inclusive Pass New York Explorer Pass New York City Pass

Cheapest pass for a relaxed New York itinerary:

New York Explorer Pass Sightseeing Flex Pass New York City Pass

Info: Our New York pass comparison is updated regularly. Nevertheless, some things can suddenly change. It’s best to check the conditions and included attractions before you make the final decision to buy one of the passes. Thank you!

That was our New York pass comparison

We hope that we could make your search for the perfect New York pass a little easier. After we almost got desperate during our own search for the right pass, we’ve put extra work into this comparison to make it easier for you.

Do you still have questions or ideas? Then we’re happy to hear your comments!

London and New York aren’t just two of the most famous cities in the world—they’re also prime competitors for the same tourism dollars. So when it comes down to London vs. New York , which city should you visit? The answer depends on what you’re looking for in a vacation. Here’s how to choose.

London vs. New York: Transportation

versus travel new york

Cost: A ride to anywhere on the MTA system in New York will cost you a flat $2.75. In London, you’ll have to do some math to calculate your fare, as it’s broken down by zones. You’ll also need to swipe your ticket in order to exit the tube, which is highly annoying.

Interior Design: I will never understand why London’s tube has carpeted seats. At least when things go awry in the biohazard department on New York City’s subway, you can just hose down the plastic seats. Although you’ll be uncomfortably packed into the cars in either city during rush hour, the tube is significantly narrower and shorter, adding to the claustrophobia.

Delays/Construction: There’s no real winner between London vs. New York here. Expect random delays and plenty of construction work in both cities.

Safety: If you’ve ever feared being pushed under a subway train, you’ll appreciate the sliding glass doors at some London tube stations that won’t open until a train is in the station. New York offers no such safety measures.

Hours: New York, the city that never sleeps, runs its subway 24-hours a day. London offers limited “night tube” 24-hour service, with many lines shutting down earlier in the evening. When the tube isn’t running, you’re left to the mercy of the unreliable and often rowdy “night bus.”

Tickets: Simply tap your plastic Oyster card to the barrier to open the doors without breaking your stride in London. In New York, you’ll have to fumble to slide your flimsy paper card in order to get in.

London Vs. New York Transportation Winner: New York, for not making us do math in order to ride the subway and for being open 24-hours.

London vs. New York: Food

versus travel new york

New York has the market cornered on cheesecake and bagels, but London’s no culinary slouch , either. I’ll go off of straight facts here: London’s restaurants have 85 Michelin stars, while New York’s restaurants have 93.

London Vs. New York Food Winner: New York, for both its variety and overall quality.

London vs. New York: Culture

versus travel new york

History: London has been around since approximately 50 C.E., whereas New York City didn’t come along until 1624. So London definitely crushes New York on the historical culture front—at least if you’re interested in ancient history. New York’s history is obviously shorter, but there’s plenty of it squeezed into a few centuries.

Museums: London has the British Museum. New York has the Met and the Museum of Natural History. In terms of quality, it’s a toss-up, but based on sheer quantity the edge goes to London. It has more than double the number of museums vs. New York City.

Accessibility: Much of London’s great culture is accessible to anyone—most of its museums, concerts, and some theaters are free.

London vs. New York Culture Winner: This one’s close, but the edge goes to London for, once again, sheer quantity of options.

London vs. New York: Friendliness

versus travel new york

Locals in both cities have no patience for hapless tourists who get in their way and commit egregious errors like standing on the wrong side of the escalator or stopping on the sidewalk for pictures. But if you stop a local on the street to ask for directions, both Londoners and New Yorkers are likely to help you get where you need to go.

Traveling alone and looking to have a chat? I bet you’ll have much better luck in a London pub than in a New York City bar, so my vote here goes to London.

London vs. New York Friendliness Winner: London. Share a pint!

London vs. New York: City Layout

versus travel new york

Before Google Maps became ubiquitous, Londoners relied on an A-Z street map book which helped them find random street names. That’s because London’s street names have no logical design to them.

In New York, at least some of the city is designed in an easy to navigate grid system. (You’re on your own in Lower Manhattan and some of the outer boroughs, though).

London vs. New York City Layout Winner: New York. It’s hard to get lost in a grid!

London vs. New York: Affordability

versus travel new york

Brexit kind of changed the game on this one . London used to be a serious investment for vacationing Americans, since the exchange rate so strongly favored the GBP. Now things are a little more even with 1 USD equaling 0.76 GBP (check current exchange rates at xe.com ). You’ll still be taking a hit, but it’s a much smaller hit.

The cost of living is about equal, with New York City being slightly more expensive. According to Numbeo.com , you’d need about $7,748.16 to maintain the same standard of life in New York that you could have in London for about $6,050.47. With the currency exchange, it winds up fairly even.

London Vs. New York Cost Winner: This one’s a tie. Both cities are about equally expensive.

London vs. New York: Nightlife

versus travel new york

In New York, there are really only three hours that you can’t be out partying (legally) if you so desire. Bars close at 4:00 a.m. and reopen at 7:00 a.m. (except on Sundays).

Many pubs in London have last call at the shockingly early hour of 11:00 p.m or midnight. After that, you’ll have to search out a spot (mainly the bigger dance clubs) that are open until 2:00 a.m. or have a 24-hour license.

At least in London, you’re allowed to drink in public (except on the tube), so you can always take your party to the streets.

London vs. New York Nightlife Winner: New York. It’s not called the City That Never Sleeps for nothing!

London vs. New York: Green Space

versus travel new york

Both London and New York do “urban oasis” well. But only London’s parks have lounge chairs to rent , ponds that you can swim in , beaches ,  and a professional outdoor theater .

Also, London is actually made up of 62 percent green space vs. New York’s paltry 14 percent. Then again, New York has Central Park .

London Vs. New York Winner: London, but it’s close.

London vs. New York: Theater

versus travel new york

It’s theater vs. theatre in this showdown. London wins it again on the historical front, having hosted history’s most famous playwright, William Shakespeare. Now you can watch his works (and others) at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre , a reconstruction of the original, which was destroyed in 1613 by a fire. For more modern works, the West End district is the equivalent of New York’s famed Broadway, with numerous theaters hosting plays and musicals.

New York takes it on the iconic front—most actors say they’re going to make it on Broadway, not in the West End, and you can’t get more famous than having your name in Broadway lights.

Both cities put on free plays in public parks, and both attract world-famous stars to tread their boards.

London vs. New York Theater Winner: It’s a tie. You’ll find plenty of top-quality shows in either city.

London vs. New York: Airports

versus travel new york

London is served by five major airports (Luton, Stansted, City, Heathrow, and Gatwick). New York only has three (LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark). New York loses another point for having LaGuardia, which consistently earns a place on every “ worst airports ” round-up. ( Probably because it only has two runways .)

London Vs. New York Airports Winner: Heathrow isn’t great, but it’s better than LaGuardia. Slight edge to London.

What to Know About NYC Airports Before Your Next Trip

New York City has three major airports, so which should you choose? Here's everything you need to know before booking your flight.

versus travel new york

John F. Kennedy International Airport

Laguardia airport, newark liberty international airport.

The airspace above New York City is among the busiest in the world. The metro area's airport system comprises three major travel hubs — John F. Kennedy International (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), and Newark Liberty International (EWR). Deciding which to fly into or out of on your next trip depends on your airline preference, which airport you're connecting to, and where you're staying, as the airports are located in Queens and New Jersey. Crossing the city to get to an airport is no quick task, and doing so in comfort (via a cab as opposed to a train or bus) is pricey. You might want to tailor your travel plans to the airport closest to you.

Here's how to get to each airport from Manhattan, how much it costs, and more to consider before choosing between JFK, LGA, and EWR.

NYC's main airport, John F. Kennedy International, is in Queens. It's the largest and busiest of the three major airports serving the city, seeing more than 55 million passengers per year.

If you're staying in Brooklyn south of Williamsburg or in eastern Queens, JFK will be your closest airport. New York's most famous gateway is a preferred choice for many travelers because of its lounges, shops, and dining options.

Airlines and Destinations

More than 70 airlines fly in and out of JFK, and most of them are international: Singapore Airlines, Korean Air, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Air France, Finnair, and EgyptAir, to mention a few. You can catch a direct flight from JFK to cities across the world, from Buenos Aires to Reykjavik. Of course, major U.S.-based carriers American, Delta, and JetBlue use JFK as a hub. The airport's entire Terminal 5 is operated by JetBlue.

Airport Amenities

JFK is in the midst of a $19-billion renovation, which will add two new terminals and is expected to be completed in 2030. The project also includes modernizing existing terminals, which might affect hours and operations at restaurants and shops throughout. Popular places to eat are Terminal 1's Jikji Cafe for quick Asian-inspired bites, Terminal 4's Blue Point Brewing Company for a sit-down meal and beers, and an outpost of Artichoke Basille's Pizza in Terminal 5.

JFK has a Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse and lounges for Aer Lingus, Air France, Air India, Alaska Airlines, Delta, Emirates, and Lufthansa.

Getting to and From JFK

JFK is relatively easy to access on public transportation. The fastest way to get there is by taking the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to Jamaica from Penn Station in Manhattan or Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. A one-way trip costs $5 off-peak and $7 during peak hours. From Jamaica, take the AirTrain to your terminal. This airport shuttle costs $8.25 to ride to or from Jamaica or Howard Beach stations, but it's free to use between terminals.

Though not as fast, taking the subway is cheaper. Pay $2.90 to ride the E, J, or Z train to Jamaica, then transfer to the AirTrain to get to your terminal. Alternatively, take the A train to Howard Beach and catch the AirTrain from there. Traveling from Manhattan to the airport by subway takes an hour or more, depending on where you start.

Taking a taxi between JFK and anywhere in Manhattan, in either direction, costs a flat rate of $70 plus taxes, tolls, and tip. There's a $5 surcharge during peak hours. If you opt to take an Uber or a Lyft into the city instead, you can meet your driver in the pickup line outside of arrivals. Driving time between JFK and Manhattan typically takes 30 to 90 minutes, depending on traffic.

LaGuardia is the smallest of the NYC area's three major airports but has been called the most efficient in the world. It's located in Queens, about 10 miles north of JFK, and is most accessible from Queens, Manhattan's Upper East Side, the Bronx, and northern Brooklyn.

LGA is a popular option for domestic travelers. Eight carriers — United, American, Delta, Air Canada, Frontier, Southwest, Spirit, and JetBlue — fly direct to cities across the U.S., plus Canada, Aruba, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. LaGuardia is the only NYC-area stop for the Delta Shuttle, which runs to Boston, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

LaGuardia used to catch a lot of flack for its subpar facilities. Now, after a years-long renovation, LGA is broadly perceived as one of the best. Terminals B and C received a complete overhaul. After it reopened in 2020, Terminal B was even named the best new airport in the world at UNESCO's Prix Versailles awards. These terminals are where you'll find the best eats, including Shake Shack, Bubby's, Dos Toros Taqueria, Zaro's Family Bakery, and other New York favorites. Terminal C also houses the Delta lounge, the only airline lounge at LGA.

Terminal A is an outlier, better known as a piece of art and history than for its amenities. Also known as the Marine Air Terminal, this funky art deco building was once used for seaplanes and contains a spectacular WPA mural in its rotunda. The only airlines flying out of Terminal A are Spirit and Frontier.

Getting to and From LGA

There's no subway or train stop at LaGuardia Airport, so getting there on public transit includes a leg of bus travel. First, take an E, F, M, R train to Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue or the 7 to 74th St-Broadway, then hop on the free Q70-SBS LaGuardia Link , which stops at terminals B and C. There's a complimentary shuttle that will get you to Terminal A, if needed. If you're traveling to or from uptown Manhattan, the M60-SBS bus, which stops on Harlem's 125th Street outside the 4, 5, 6 line station at Lexington Avenue, is your route. A one-way trip costs $2.90.

Taking a taxi to Manhattan from the airport (or vice versa) costs about $30 to $45 plus tolls and tip. If you're traveling at rush hour, the meter will probably soar well above that price bracket. Similarly, Uber and Lyft pricing will increase during peak times. LaGuardia has designated pickup areas for rideshare services at each terminal.

Newark Liberty International serves about 44 million passengers per year. The west side is its easiest access point, but traveling between EWR and other hoods like Queens and Brooklyn can be pricey and time-consuming.

More than 30 airlines fly in and out of EWR, including more than a dozen international carriers. United claims the airport as one of its major hubs. Other airlines include American Airlines, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, British Airways, Emirates, Spirit, and TAP Air Portugal. You can get to cities like San Juan, London, Tokyo, Dubai, and Berlin on direct flights.

Each terminal has a food court, and Terminal C's is arguably the best. Order an Italian deli sandwich from Casiano's, dim sum from Wabi Sabi, or ramen from Kaedama while you wait for your flight. At the recently renovated Terminal A, you can get a classic NYC bagel from Ess-a-Bagel or an organic chocolate chip cookie from Jersey favorite Bang Cookies.

United, British Airways, Delta, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic have lounges at EWR.

Getting to and From EWR

NJ Transit 's Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines provide transportation between midtown Manhattan and Newark Airport Station, which connects to EWR via the AirTrain. The whole trip takes about 50 minutes and costs $15.75 for a trip in either direction. The Coach USA Newark Airport Express bus service also runs between midtown Manhattan and all EWR terminals. It costs $33 for a round-trip fare or $18.70 for a one-way ticket. With minimal traffic, the journey takes about an hour.

Taxi rides between EWR and NYC can take anywhere between 30 minutes and two hours, depending on traffic. Expect to pay $50 to $70 on a taxi ride into Manhattan, and more if you're going to a further-out borough. Getting to EWR from the city by taxi typically costs $70 minimum.

Beware of surge pricing if you opt for a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft. While cabs line up at the taxi stand, rideshare drivers will scoop you up from the passenger pickup area.

NYC vs. L.A.: Which Bucket-List City Is Best for Your Next Trip?

author image

See recent posts by Kyle Valenta

The rivalry between America's two greatest cities is decades in the making. Los Angeles has its sun, surf, Mexican food, and an altogether more laid-back pace of life, while New York City offers everything from food to art, culture, and people in a package that sometimes aggressively refuses to quit. For travelers, both cities have their draws: Hollywood's bright lights and beaches in Malibu, Venice , and Santa Monica beckon those visiting Los Angeles, while the Empire State Building, Broadway, and an unrivaled dining scene make New York a bucket-list destination for people from around the world.  Oyster.com has spent plenty of time in both cities, so we've decided to turn to everyday people -- musicians, mothers, architects, and writers who've lived bi-coastal lives -- to get their take on just which city is the best across a wide spread of categories. Read on to see which one is right for you.

Easiest to Explore for First-Time Travelers: New York

New York may look like a beast to explore, but a number of factors make it fairly simple.

We get it: New York City is intimidating. Sure, it’s loud, unrelenting, can smell terrible in spots, and is insanely crowded. But, as traveler, architect, and recent L.A. transplant Richard Kelly told us, “New York is hands down one of the easiest cities to get around. Not only does the city’s grid make navigating it much easier, but between the subway, bus, taxis, and Citi Bikes, you can work your way around most the city in a short trip.” While Los Angeles’ mass transit system is growing, you’ll still need wheels to get around, and major destinations can be hours-long drives from one another given the city’s horrifying traffic situation. So grab a Metrocard and hop on NYC’s 24/7 subway the next time you’re in town. Just be sure to check the MTA’s website if you’re planning on using the subway at night or on weekends, as regular service is often drastically altered.

Coolest Beach Scene: Los Angeles

The beaches of Los Angeles are the stuff of legend.

With its year-round mild-to-hot climate, frequently rain-free weeks, and mile after mile of uninterrupted coastline, it’s almost impossible to beat the beaches of the Los Angeles area. Rae Jones, a senior creative recruiter living in Venice, California, told us that is, in part, due to the diversity of beach scenes. “You can find whatever type of beach you want,” she says. “Whether a small rocky cove or a sandy and wide surfer beach.” Echoing her sentiments, fashion-merchandiser and and Northern California resident Farrah Japaz notes, “Los Angeles has wide stretches of sand that are welcoming for surfers, families, and campers as well as beaches with picturesque mountain backdrops.” To be sure: New York’s beaches are a hot spot from June to August, when the Rockaways, Coney Island, and Brighton Beach are literally swarmed with locals. But that short season, combined with a claustrophobic lack of space on the sand, means that NYC’s beaches can’t hold a candle to their West Coast rivals.

Best Art, Museums, and Cultural Scene: New York (For Now)

The Guggenheim is just one of New York's many hallowed museums.

We aren’t denying the deep cultural roots to be found in Los Angeles. After all, as Kelly suggests, “L.A. is great for modern and more cutting-edge art — it’s more engrained in the culture.” And while new galleries and museums are popping up seemingly every month out West, New York’s arts and cultural legacy goes very, very deep. “Galleries, theater, or even concerts in the park make New York a winner in the arts and cultural scene,” Japaz says. Museums like MoMA and the Met have some of the world’s most wide-ranging collections, while the galleries of Chelsea host contemporary exhibitions that are entirely free to access. Broadway calls New York City home, as does its slightly more experimental cousin, Off-Broadway (and Off-Off-Broadway), and performance spaces range from formerly abandoned warehouses in Maspeth, Queens, to stages in Central Park. The latter is also home to the Public Theater’s free Shakespeare in the Park series every summer, where theater-goers line up well before dawn to score free tickets. However, when you also add the sheer volume of artists and actors fleeing to Los Angeles to enjoy sunny skies, lower rent, and space to create, that city only bound to get more dynamic.

Most Family-Friendly for Travelers With Kids: New York

Home of the Rockettes' Christmas Spectacular, Radio City Music Hall is just one venue where you can find family-friendly fun.

Traveling with kids is never an easy feat, and urban getaways can complicate things even more. However, big city travel doesn’t only have to be for adults. For Abigail Rasminsky, an Oyster.com writer and mother who recently moved to Los Angeles, New York makes traveling with children marginally easier. According to her, “The difference between visiting NYC or L.A. with kids is all about logistics.” When those logistics are taken into account, and while navigating the subway with strollers and babies is a nightmare, New York can be a bit simpler. “In NYC, you can easily get around one neighborhood and do a lot within it — lunch, a museum, the playground, ice cream shops — but it will involve a lot of walking (or pushing a stroller). In L.A., you’ll be getting in and out of the car a lot, so you basically need to make sure your kid can deal with car rides and a car seat. Even so, there are only a few neighborhoods that are truly walkable.” So unless you plan on sitting in traffic jams with antsy, sugar-fueled kids, NYC is likely the better option.

Best Luxury Hotels: Los Angeles

It's hard not to stare in awe at Los Angeles' gorgeous luxury hotels.

While new luxury options like The William Vale and 1 Hotel Central Park are complementing New York’s already opulent options, including the St. Regis and The Mark , space is at an almost absurd premium in the city. That means that typical luxury amenities like swish spas, gorgeous pools, and massive marble-clad bathrooms are the exception rather than the norm. By virtue of size alone, Los Angeles’ luxury hotel stock has a distinct advantage over New York. Oyster.com editor Megan Wood — who recently moved back to New York from L.A. — has seen more than her share of luxe properties in both cities. For her, Los Angeles takes the cake. “For true luxury (and celebrity sightings) you have to check out Hotel Bel-Air or The Beverly Hills Hotel . Between the two properties, I’ve seen Kanye West, Ryan Gosling, Mindy Kaling, and a handful of the Real Housewives. Attentive poolside bar service and gorgeous garden grounds are on offer at both hotels, and both provide private bungalows.” Bungalows, gardens, and pools — all in one? New York City doesn’t even know what those words mean together.

Easiest Place to Stay Healthy While on Vacation: Los Angeles

Need some outdoor exercise while you're in LA? Grab a healthy breakfast and your skateboard.

Vacations are generally a time of indulgence, but as any intrepid traveler will tell you, sometimes you need build in healthy moments to really help you recharge. After all: What traveler actually comes home feeling rested from a booze-fueled all-inclusive getaway? To be sure, there’s a cold-pressed juice joint in nearly every neighborhood of Manhattan at this point, and plenty of trendy gluten-free and vegan spots have opened in recent years. But Los Angeles may just be the originator of all things wholistic and healthy when it comes to major American cities. Sonia Kreitzer, a musician and yoga instructor who left New York for Los Angeles in 2014, tells us, “From a wellness perspective, L.A. is kind of a paradise. You can find juice bars here with the same frequency you could find a Starbucks in NYC. There are some of the best yoga teachers in the world here, and also a lot of healing energy from access to the ocean, the sun, and the desert.” She isn’t the only one who feels this way. According to Japaz, Los Angeles can feel like “the birthplace of athleisure — I’ve never seen so many tricked out workout pants and colorful sneakers.”

Best International Dining Scene: New York

Chinatown in Manhattan is just one of NYC's dizzying international dining destinations.

Yes, Los Angeles (and everyone ever born in California) — we hear you: Your Mexican food is God’s gift to the world. And you’ve got K-Town, too. That’s all nice and fine, but New York is home to someone from almost every nation and cultural group on earth, and by that fact alone, Los Angeles can’t even touch it. And that cultural amalgamation translates to a diverse dining scene that only gets better by the year. Chinatown in Manhattan is like a tour of all things East Asian, while real-deal Korean barbecue can be had on 32 Street in Koreatown. Caribbean flavors — representing Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic — abound in northern Manhattan, as do Harlem’s old soul food restaurants.

But for even more authentic eats, head to the boroughs. Check out the dining scene around Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, and Woodside, or venture out to Flushing — all of which are in Queens — for everything from Uruguayan pastry shops to South Asian, Tibetan, Nepali, Ecuadoran, Filipino, Mexican, Peruvian, or Thai food. Arthur Avenue in the Bronx and Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn are old-school Italian, while even more African and Caribbean spots can be found across the Bronx as well. As Kelly tells it: “Nowhere is there a more diverse group of cultures that have collided in one city. Travel just a few blocks and you can have the best handmade pasta, the best bagels and lox, or the best dumplings. NYC has endless authentic food options.”

Nicest Parks and Outdoor Spaces: It’s A Tie

Runyon Canyon is one of LA's most popular outdoor destinations.

You might wonder how New York City can possibly match Los Angeles when it comes to the great outdoors. We’ve seen all of your snaps and Instagram posts from Runyon Canyon, which — admittedly — is a beautiful place. In fact, like many of the West Coast’s big cities, the proximity to nature is a major draw for everyone from new residents to tourists. According to Japaz, “The accessibility to the great outdoors is one of the reasons I moved to LA and why I love it. There are so many hiking trails with beautiful views of the city — or you can just go for a jog on the beach.” Joshua Tree National Park, for instance, is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from LA, putting one of the nation’s prettiest places within a relatively easy day trip.

But what New York City lacks in pristine nature and mountain vistas, it makes up for in crown jewels. Central Park might just be the prettiest urban green space in the country — if not the world. And that’s to say nothing of Hudson River Park, Governor’s Island, Prospect Park, and the national parks and monuments that range from the Statue of Liberty to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. There are also amazing hikes within a 60- to 90-minute journey of the city, in the Hudson Valley , the Catskills , and western New Jersey . If that’s not enough, simply hop on the Long Island Railroad to reach the stunning windswept sand dunes of Montauk .

Coolest Neighborhoods to Explore: New York

Old and new sit side by side throughout New York, making its neighborhoods fascinating to explore.

New York is a wonderland for travelers who like exploring on on foot. Its network of neighborhoods is legendary, and you can move between the intimately charming West Village, big-brand heavy SoHo, quaint NoLiTa, and buzzing Chinatown without walking more than 15 or 20 minutes from one to the next. It’s the clash of hyper-modern and old styles that helps make New York so special, as brownstones and centuries-old parks are tucked in between skyscrapers and new landmarks. Beyond Manhattan, there are a number of awesome neighborhoods to explore, including the ethnic enclaves along Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, trendy Long Island City (which is home to MoMA PS1), and — of course — yuppified Williamsburg and its hipster satellite neighborhoods, Greenpoint and Bushwick.

Los Angeles has pockets of walkable and exciting areas, including beachside enclaves like Santa Monica and Venice Beach, as well as Silver Lake and Echo Park. According to Wood, though, Eagle Rock is one of the city’s more interesting places to explore right now. “The neighborhood’s Mexican blue-collar vibe is still thriving,” she says. “But bars and art galleries are popping up between the taco trucks and dollar stores.”

Just keep in mind that gentrification is the engine behind the changes you see in most up-and-coming parts of town in either New York or Los Angeles. You may want to think twice about slamming that $10 juice if you’re standing in the middle of a neighborhood where decades-long inhabitants clearly aren’t enjoying the same sweet taste of the hottest new trends in kale.

The Winner: New York

If you’ve kept score, New York snags the title here, based on these categories. That being said, New York and Los Angeles are quite distinct, though both have plenty to offer travelers. At the end of the day, the decision really comes down to your personal preference in what you’re looking for in a vacation. You truly can’t go wrong with either choice.

Hotel Picks for Every Budget

We aren’t going to sugarcoat this: New York and Los Angeles are expensive, particularly when it comes to hotels. That fact out of the way, here are our picks for the best hotels for budget, mid-range, and upscale choices in both cities.

In New York, unless your’e planning on bedding down in a flophouse near the airports, you’ll be shelling out well over $100 a night for anything decent. For something with a little personality that’s best for partiers, try The Jane Hotel , in the Meatpacking District. If you have a little more cash to spare, check out the Hudson Hotel , near Central Park, or be adventurous and hop the river to Long Island City. There, The Paper Factory Hotel practically explodes with historic charm and on-trend details. We also love the Arlo SoHo , for chic micro-hotel rooms and buzzy social venues alongside impeccable art-fueled design.

As we’ve already told you, Los Angeles can yield more bang for the buck when it comes to hotels, though it’s by no means cheap. For a homey and entirely bed-and-breakfast style experience near Hollywood, try the Cinema Suites . Rates there can be a bargain for the area. The Seaview Hotel is a great budget-friendly option for those who prefer to be near the Santa Monica Pier. The Standard Hollywood is a solid bet for its retro-inspired interiors and hip vibe at reasonable mid-range prices. If you’ve got lots of cash to spare, opt for Shutters on the Beach or Hotel Shangri La Santa Monica — both of which are memorable high-end properties that will have you feeling like royalty.

JFK vs. LaGuardia vs. Newark: Which NYC airport should I fly into?

Ethan Steinberg

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

With the biggest population of any U.S. city, New York has not one, not two, but three major airports. Choosing which one to fly into or out of -- JFK, LaGuardia or Newark -- is a decision influenced by which airline you're flying and your destination. Today we're going to take a look at these and other considerations to see how these three stack up against each other to help you make an informed decision.

Distance to downtown and transportation options

It's hard to pick a center of New York, but for this post, I'll use the Metropolitan Museum of Art, halfway up Central Park at 82nd Street and Fifth Avenue.

Seeing Central Park from the air is a real avgeek treat. Photo by Alberto Riva/TPG

Here's how the three airports compare in accessibility from Manhattan:

As anyone who's ever traveled to New York knows, the saddest part of this chart is the sheer range of times it can take to go between Manhattan and the airports because of traffic. LaGuardia might seem like the closest option, but the intense construction there can cause significant delays simply leaving the airport. Depending on what time your flight arrives or departs, you might miss traffic entirely or you might get caught in the midst of one of the most frustrating rush-hour commutes anywhere in the country.

Airlines and flight options

There's certainly some overlap, but it's easy to think of the three New York airports as serving different roles.

JFK is the primary international airport, where you'll find most of the long-haul flights departing and landing. It's a major hub for American Airlines, Delta and JetBlue, and the following international carriers also fly from JFK:

  • ANA flies to both Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND) daily with a 777-300ER
  • JAL flies to both Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND) daily with a 777-300ER
  • Cathay Pacific flies to Hong Kong (HKG) 3x daily with a 777-300ER
  • EVA Air flies to Taipei (TPE) daily with a 777-300ER
  • Turkish Airlines flies to Istanbul (IST) twice daily with a 777-300ER and an A330
  • Lufthansa flies to Frankfurt (FRA) twice daily with a 747-8 and an A340, and once daily to Munich with an A340
  • British Airways flies to London (LHR) as often as 10x daily with a mix of 747 and 777 aircraft
  • Qatar flies to Doha (DOH) twice daily with a 777-300ER and A350-1000
  • Emirates flies to Dubai (DXB) twice daily with an A380
  • Etihad flies to Abu Dhabi (AUH) daily with an A380
  • Air India flies daily to New Delhi (DEL) with a 777-300ER

There are many other unique and luxurious international carriers that fly in and out of JFK. In addition, you'll find domestic service to almost every major airport across the country, including short flights along the East Coast and longer transcontinental flights. Airlines compete heavily for a share of the premium transcontinental market. American Airlines flies a specially configured, three-cabin A321T with lie-flat first- and business-class seats, JetBlue flies its unbeatable Mint product (also on an A321) and Delta flies 767s with lie-flat seats.

Newark, by comparison, is one of United's largest hubs. The Star Alliance carrier doesn't operate out of JFK. A number of international Star Alliance airlines fly into Newark as well as JFK to take advantage of the connecting traffic United can offer them. These include SWISS, Lufthansa, Air India, Ethiopian and TAP Portugal. Singapore Airlines operates the world's longest flight between Singapore and Newark every day . A number of other international airlines fly into Newark, including Emirates, Cathay Pacific and El Al.

versus travel new york

LaGuardia, by comparison, is much smaller both in the land it occupies and the number and types of planes it accommodates. Other than a few flights to Canada, you won't find any international routes and you won't find any service to cities farther west than Denver (DEN). Because of its proximity to the city, the three legacy U.S. airlines all fly out of LaGuardia, although Delta and American have a larger presence than United. LGA is also Southwest's lone foothold in New York, after the popular and affordable airline decided to pull out of Newark entirely earlier this year. JetBlue also has a large presence at LaGuardia, though you'll only find its Mint product flying on select routes out of JFK.

Airport amenities and perks

JFK is spread across six terminals, most of which are not connected airside. (Don't let the numbering confuse you. Terminals 3 and 6 were demolished about 10 years ago.) This means that your predeparture experience will vary widely, depending on which airline you're flying.

Many international airlines use Terminal 4 because it has a number of gates that are compatible with the double-decker 747s and A380s. This is also where you'll find the largest Amex Centurion lounge, once it opens in the first half of 2020 . Many airlines operate their own lounges at JFK, including Lufthansa (T1), Air France-KLM (T1), Korean Air (T1), Etihad (T4), Virgin Atlantic (T4), Air India (T4), Emirates (T4), SWISS (T4) and British Airways (T7).

When it comes to U.S. airlines, American Airlines has a Flagship lounge and Flagship First dining space in Terminal 8 just past security. This is also where you'll find Bobby Van's, a great steakhouse that participates in the Priority Pass program, meaning eligible members can enjoy $28 off their bill. Priority Pass also has options in Terminal 7 (Alaska Airlines lounge), Terminal 4 (Wingtips lounge) and Terminal 1 (Air France lounge and Korean Airlines business-class lounge). Delta doesn't have a premium lounge for its long-haul passengers, but you will find Delta SkyClubs in Terminals 2 and 4.

Newark's international service is dominated by Star Alliance airlines, so most international business-class passengers will prefer the United Polaris lounge or United's not-so-secret restaurant, Classified , if you're able to score a reservation. Beyond that, you'll find a few lounges from international airlines like Lufthansa, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic and a number of United Clubs for passengers who don't meet the stricter access requirements for the Polaris lounge. The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, as well as the Art & Lounge, are accessible to Priority Pass customers.

versus travel new york

Although LaGuardia generally shorter flights than JFK or Newark, it has a few decent lounges. The most exciting is the Amex Centurion Lounge, accessible to holders of a Platinum Card® from American Express or Amex Centurion card. The lounge is located before security between the B and C concourses, which means that you can access it no matter what airline you're flying but also that you'll need to leave the lounge a little earlier than usual in order to clear security.

DSC09839

Other than that, your lounge options are limited to an Air Canada lounge, a United Club, an Admirals Club, and a few Delta SkyClub locations. Notably there are no Priority Pass lounges at LaGuardia, making the Amex Platinum far and away the best credit card for lounge access if you frequent this airport.

Bottom line

Other than geographical location, the biggest differences among New York's three airports are the airlines and types of flights they serve. Both JFK and Newark offer services to destinations all over North America, as well as a number of truly long-haul flights. These airports have a number of great lounges, although other than a few Priority Pass locations, they generally cater to premium-cabin passengers and top-tier elites. Flights from LaGuardia, by comparison, top out at about four and a half hours. It makes sense, then, that there would be fewer amenities, although the airport gets a huge boost from the often-crowded Centurion Lounge.

If you're loyal to United or flying to Asia, you might have to fly out of Newark. If you're not loyal to a single airline, you're likely to base your decision on convenience. Depending on where in New York you're heading to (or starting from) these three airports can feel worlds apart. Rush-hour traffic may be the deciding factor when you pick an airport.

5 Family-Friendly Getaways from New York City

By Elissa Garay

United States New York New Paltz Hotel Mohonk Mountain House

Living in an urban center like New York City comes with its own unique set of challenges in the COVID-19 world, especially for broods cooped up in tight living quarters. So when it gets to the point where the kids are (literally) climbing the apartment walls, you know it’s time to take a family breather. Of course, thanks to the pandemic, those daydream jaunts to Paris or Papeete aren’t happening anytime soon, but parents know that a real vacation is one that entails significantly less schlep (and expense) when factoring in the little ones. Happily, there are several destination resorts tailor-made for families—think, activities galore, kid-friendly accommodations and dining, and staff well-versed in meeting the needs and wants of pint-sized guests—within a 2.5-hour drive of the city.

From the Poconos to the Catskills , these close-to-home, year-round retreats do brisk business in the quick family escape. Most are all-inclusive , so you can skip the hand-in-your-pocket workout, too. Plus, all of the properties are taking coronavirus safety seriously, with new standard practices like enhanced hygiene and sanitation measures; enforcement of masks and social distancing; significantly reduced hotel occupancy; takeout options for dining; and controlled capacity and required reservations for certain activities. Best of all, though, their rural settings and mountain backdrops feel a world away—and what could be better than that?

Woodloch Pines Resort, Hawley, Pennsylvania

The 160-room Woodloch Pines Resort has provided a woodsy wonderland of kid-primed activities in the Poconos for more than 60 years. Its social distance-ready 300 acres sit on the banks of Lake Teedyuskung, a haven for swimming, boating, and water sports. Robust daily programming is centered on old-fashioned family fun (and as much as possible takes place outdoors, weather permitting), with everything from bingo to bonfires, and scavenger hunts to ”silent DJ” parties (held remotely, all across the property), alongside Woodloch signatures like family “bakery wars,” Olympics-style competitions, and pop-up petting zoos. There’s a laundry list of amenities, too: highlights include an outdoor and indoor pool and splash zone, a brand-new lakeside playground, bumper cars and bumper boats, go-karts, archery, seasonal snow-tubing, mini golf, rock climbing, year-round ice skating, paintball, an escape room, and sports courts galore.

The rooms aren’t glitzy, but they feel welcoming with cozy, country décor; tasty meals are served family-style (with takeout available). Down the road, find an 18-hole championship golf course at Woodloch Springs, and a superb spa (though with scaled-back services) at luxe sister property The Lodge at Woodloch .

Book now: All-inclusive rates start from $164/night, per adult; supplemental kids’ rates from $67 (ages 3 and up); expedia.com . Note the resort’s special dining theme nights and accompanying character appearances, as well as its evening stage shows, are currently on pause; read up on Woodloch’s COVID considerations .

Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, New York

This Victorian-style castle-resort-and-spa , set on some 40,000 acres within New York’s forested Shawangunk Mountains, has held staying power for more than 150 years—a mainstay of family weekend getaways from NYC . Little wonder, given the 265-room resort’s rich roster of amenities and programming, which include an ice-skating pavilion, tennis courts, nine-hole golf course, show gardens, horse stables, indoor heated pool, and award-winning, nature-inspired spa (with features like a solarium and outdoor heated mineral pool). The property overlooks Lake Mohonk, a playground for seasonal boating, fishing, and swimming, while 85 miles of trails beckon for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, cross-country-skiing, or even guided “ forest bathing ” sessions. You'll find plenty of gazebos, porches, and balconies scattered across the grounds, while cozy fireplace nooks and homey, antique-strewn rooms are the ideal end-of-day retreat. Rates are all-inclusive, including most activities, three daily meals (including seasonal BBQ cookouts and new to-go options), and afternoon tea and cookies.

New for 2020, the resort is working with local breweries and distilleries to present craft beer and whiskey flights for guests, paired with Hudson Valley -sourced cheeses, meats, and jams (for a supplemental fee). Plus, come December, Mohonk will transform into a Victorian wonderland for the holidays for the first time, complete with festive touches like handmade wreaths, gingerbread houses, and caroling—talk about holiday cheer.

Book now: From $656 for two adults, per night. Supplemental kids’ rates (ages four through 12) start at $130/night; mohonk.com . The drop-off kids’ club has been temporarily closed, and services at the spa are reduced; read more on Mohonk’s COVID considerations .

Skytop Lodge, Skytop, Pennsylvania

This grand 124-room mountain lodge (along with some stand-alone storybook cottages and a newly renovated, upscale, 20-room inn) has been welcoming vacationers to the Poconos since the 1920s. Its elegant Dutch Colonial-style stone manor house is filled with soaring ceilings, stone and wooden accents, crackling fireplaces, and period furnishings that evoke a bygone era. Step outside, and the immense 5,500-acre grounds of forests, lakes, waterfalls, streams, and fresh mountain air beg for little adventurers to get out and explore—go ahead and set them loose on 30 miles of woodland hiking trails, designed to burn off that surplus kid steam. In summer, there’s swimming and an inflatable trampoline park on the lake; in winter, there’s skiing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice-skating, and, new for this year, ice fishing—plus, find four tennis courts and an indoor and outdoor pool. Optional activities include a ropes and zip line course, paintball, and rock climbing. There’s also clay shooting, boating, and an 18-hole golf course.

Book now: Rates inclusive of meals and select activities from $429 for two adults; supplemental kids’ rates from $80 (ages 5 to 12); plus an 18 percent service charge. Room-only rates start at $159/night; expedia.com . Note that due to COVID-19, the resort’s drop-off summer kids’ camp, as well as its live weekend evening entertainment, have been discontinued; read up on Skytop’s coronavirus considerations .

Rocking Horse Ranch Resort, Highland, New York

Think you need to head out west for a dude ranch vacation? Think again. Less than a two-hour drive north of New York City , in the foothills of the Shawangunk Mountains, Rocking Horse Ranch has been entertaining urban cowboys—and hosting proper family weekend getaways from NYC—for more than 60 years. The horses (nearly 120 of them) are the main attraction at the Western-themed, kid-centric, 500-acre resort—with everything from horse-drawn wagon and pony rides to advanced trail trots.

Check out the small animal exhibit (expect the likes of camels, zebra, and miniature donkeys); brand-new outdoor pool, hot springs, and waterslide complex; and live shows and entertainment (like bonfire sing-alongs and magic shows). Summer sees water sports on the lake, while winter is popular for snow-tubing and horse-drawn sleigh rides. All-inclusive pricing factors in accommodations in the rustic 113-room lodge; three meals led by Culinary Institute of America alumni, with favorites like BBQ beef brisket and horseradish-crusted salmon (plus an afternoon snack and complimentary drinks); and all resort activities, including unlimited horseback riding.

Book now: Rates from $399/night for a family of four (plus a resort fee of 15 percent of the nightly rate); rockinghorseranch.com . Note the resort’s spa and “Fun Barn” (an indoor activity center) is currently closed, as is its drop-off day camp; read up on Rocking Horse Ranch’s COVID considerations .

Kalahari Resorts Poconos, Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania

The bigger-is-better set can beeline for the five-year-old Kalahari Resorts Poconos (a spin-off of an expanding Wisconsin Dells-based brand), so named for the Kalahari Desert. Touting a scale of epic proportions, the resort has nearly 1,000 rooms (including a unit that can house 22 guests) and a cavernous indoor water park; at 220,000 square feet and set under a massive, climate-controlled dome, it’s America’s largest (at least until a new Kalahari Resorts Texas location opens in mid-November, which will outsize it). Dive into the aquatic adventure-land—kept at 84 degrees year-round—with features like a wave pool, lazy river, surf simulator, 32 wild waterslides, or, new for 2020, an underwater virtual reality experience (courtesy of waterproof VR headsets and masks). Plus, find age-appropriate retreats, from a toddlers’ splash zone to an adults-only swim-up bar. Note that water park occupancy is limited to 50 percent capacity, and social distancing throughout the park is enforced; chairs and loungers are spread out and sanitized frequently.

Beyond the water park, a massive arcade has games, escape rooms, virtual reality experiences, bowling, and laser tag, while seasonal outdoor pursuits include a water park extension and a ropes course, mini golf, and zip-lining. A spa offering hydrotherapy and halotherapy (with a junior spa space for kids ages three to nine) and 17 on-site bars and restaurants make the case for an overnight stay. Granted, indoor entertainment isn't everybody’s speed during the COVID-era, so if you’re not quite ready for this type of experience, consider bookmarking the resort for a visit in late 2021—or beyond.

Book now: Rates from $179/room, plus a $40/nightly resort fee; kalahariresorts.com/pennsylvania . Note the resort’s kids’ club is temporarily closed, and signature offerings like mermaid and shark swim lessons are on pause; read up on Kalahari’s COVID considerations .

Best portable massage gun

  • Best less-expensive portable

My favorite feature of massage guns is how intuitive they are. You probably don’t need to read an instruction manual to understand how to use one: You turn it on and blast a tight shoulder, calf, or other sore muscle, much like you’d knead yourself with a foam roller or a back massager , and afterwards, those areas will hopefully feel looser or more relaxed.

But you might be curious about how these devices work and what they’re actually doing to your body besides making you feel good. A massage gun delivers a percussive massage: Its motorized head pulses back and forth as it drums into you, causing your blood vessels to dilate. “All of these tools — such as foam rollers and massage guns — are all trying to do some version of the same thing, which is to amplify what the body already does well, and so they’re trying to increase blood flow to the area that is sore,” says Ben Rosario, executive director of Hoka Northern Arizona Elite , the brand’s professional running team.

The best-known massage guns are made by Therabody and Hyperice, but there are plenty of competitors in the space now at a wide range of price points and with different features, some of which may work better for you depending on what you’re looking for. Over the past six years, I’ve tested close to a dozen different massage guns, using them to help with post-workout soreness and general recovery from the running, climbing, and weight training I do. Plus, I talked to athletes, coaches, and other Strategist staffers about their favorite devices to compile this list.

What we’re looking for

A massage gun will likely have a series of different speeds, each of which has a different rate of percussions per minute (PPM), or the amount of times the massage gun head moves back and forth in a minute. These settings vary from model to model, but lower speeds will likely feel less intense than higher ones.

We might refer to these devices as massage guns because a majority of them look like the blasters you’d see in Star Wars . While most of them have a grip that fits in your palm, others have multiple handles that allow you to point the head at different angles.

Battery Life

How long a massage gun lasts on a full charge can determine how long or frequently you use it for a session. I’ve noted each device’s listed battery life — and this will fluctuate depending on which speed setting you’re using.

The motors on these devices can get quite loud, and that might affect how you watch a TV show or use it around another person in a quiet area. I’ve noted how quiet each device is on three levels, based on sound-pressure levels I measured with a sound-meter app, recording each massage gun’s range from its lowest to highest speed settings. Fifty to 60 decibels, around the noise level of an electric toothbrush, is quiet; 60 to 70 dB, which you might associate with the noise of a dishwasher, is noisy; and 70 dB and up, which is the level of a vacuum cleaner, is loud.

Accessories

Some devices will be compatible with interchangeable head attachments, which can create a different sensation by using different-shaped pressure points or make it easier to pinpoint a particular spot that needs working on. I’ve noted how many attachments come with each device (although some interchangeable heads will be compatible with devices from the same brand, like the Hypervolt and Theragun lines).

How heavy a massage gun is can determine how easy it is to hold and use during a session. Heavier models might feel unwieldy to some, while lighter ones will be generally easier to carry. I’ve listed each device’s weight.

Hyperice Hypervolt 2 Pro

Speeds: 5 | Grip: Pill-shaped | Battery life : 3 hours | Noise : Quiet | Accessories: 5 interchangeable heads | Weight: 2.6 lbs.

The Theragun is the massage gun that most people know, but the Hypervolt 2 Pro is my top pick because it feels just as powerful, but is so much quieter. It’s my most-used massage gun and my top recommendation for someone who is looking to invest in a device they’ll use frequently.

I’ve been testing the Hypervolt 2 Pro for the past six months, using it four to five times a week on all of my muscle groups, mostly after workouts or when I’m resting. The handle has a soft, rubbery grip that’s easy to hold, and you can switch between different speeds via a big dial on top of the gun.

Using a noisier device, like the Theragun Elite (below), can often sound like I’m attacking my muscles with a power tool, but the Hypervolt Pro 2’s motor creates a smooth hum as it operates, especially on its lowest setting, which I think is already quite powerful (I often don’t go above the second or third speed). Compared to the Theragun, the power of the Hypervolt’s motor feels more concentrated into the massage head, and I don’t have to stabilize the device with my grip, so using it feels effortless. The Theragun, on the other hand, especially at higher speed settings, can feel unstable and shaky in my hand, and requires a little more effort to guide it. I like how I can use the Hypervolt while I’m watching TV and not have to strain to hear dialogue. To be clear, you can still tell that it’s on (I probably wouldn’t want to use it in an open-floor office setting), but it’s still quiet enough to use without drawing attention from those around you. Plus, it gets the stamp of approval from professional surfer Kelly Slater and drag queen Katya Zamolodchikova .

Best (less expensive) overall massage gun

Turonic GM5 Massage Gun

Speeds: 5 | Grip: Round | Battery life : 8 hours | Noise : Quiet | Accessories: 7 interchangeable heads | Weight: 1.7 lbs.

For a more affordable massage gun, consider the Turonic GM5, which has all of the features of the Hypervolt Pro 2 but at a more affordable price.

If you’re comparing the GM5 to a model like the Hypervolt or a Theragun, you might consider durability as a trade-off. The GM5’s body is plastic and its handle doesn’t have a rubber/grippy coating on top of it, unlike the other devices in this list. But if you won’t be using a massage gun every day (and you’re generally not too rough with your gear), then the GM5 is a great choice. Strategist senior writer Liza Corsillo says the GM5’s battery lasts such a long time that she hardly has to charge it. When it comes to noise, she describes it as having a “low vibration sound” that’s not loud enough to be remarkable. But Corsillo says the best part about the GM5 is that it lets her and her husband give each other massages that are “actually effective, without getting bored or wearing out our hands,” she writes .

Most versatile massage gun

Therabody Theragun Elite

Speeds: 5 | Grip: Three-handle triangle grip | Battery life : 2 hours | Noise : Loud | Accessories: 5 interchangeable heads | Weight: 2.2 lbs.

If you’ve researched massage guns online or know people who have one, you’ve likely seen or heard that Therabody’s products are frequently top-recommended. What makes the brand’s Theragun line distinct is its triangle-shaped grip, which allows you to point the head at different angles, rather than being limited by a single handle like a typical massage gun.

I’ve been testing the Theragun Elite for the past two years, using it similarly to how I’ve used the Hypervolt 2 Pro: by hitting my leg muscles after runs and workouts that leave me extra sore. Its triangle handle lets me grip the device close to its head, so I can reach behind me and massage my back, which is hard to do with the shape of a regular massage gun. For that reason, I’ve found the Theragun Elite to be super versatile, and if you’re looking specifically for a massage gun that you can use on your back (without the help of another person), I’d recommend this one, or the Theragun Mini (below).

The Elite’s biggest drawback is how noisy it is. It makes a loud, high-pitched whir and rattles on higher-speed settings, which makes it hard to watch shows or movies or hold conversations. But it’s still a powerful tool that gets rid of my tightest knots, and if noise won’t matter that much to you, then the Theragun Elite’s versatility will be worth the investment.

Best massage gun for targeted massage

Trigger Point Performance Impact Massage Gun

Speeds: 4 | Grip: Angled | Battery life : 2 hours | Noise : Noisy | Accessories: None | Weight: 2.4 lbs.

You might know Trigger Point from its other recovery-product offerings (the brand makes our best overall foam-roller pick), and this simple massage gun has a smaller, rounded head (compared to the others I’ve tested) that I like using for targeting particularly tight areas with precision. Other devices on this list have interchangeable heads with pointed tips, but I haven’t found them as effective at precise targeting compared to the Trigger Point. I reach for this gun when I have a particularly tight area that needs a laser-focused drill. It has a handle that’s slightly angled forward, which makes it a bit easier to push into my legs or my arms.

The most obvious drawback is that the Impact only has that one massage head, so if you’re looking for multiple sensations, you should consider a device with interchangeable attachments. It makes a slightly rattly sound when it’s on — similar to the Theragun Elite — but it’s not too disruptive. Also, this device is frequently on sale, so this might be a budget-friendly pick, depending on how much you snag it for.

Therabody Theragun Mini

Speeds: 3 | Grip: Triangle (hand-held) | Battery life : 2 hours | Noise : Noisy | Accessories: 3 Interchangeable heads | Weight: 1 lb.

The Theragun Mini is a product I always recommend because it delivers an effective massage for its small, packable size (about five by five by two inches), although newer models are even smaller than the one I own — about 20 percent smaller, according to the brand. I’ve been testing the Mini for the past two years, and I like it for traveling or using at my desk when I’m working from home. Its handle recalls the heft of a DSLR camera: It’s chunky, but ergonomic, so my fingers can wrap around it. The surface has a soft, slightly rubbery coating. Because the grip is close to the head, I can get closer to the muscle and apply more pressure to my body, and in this way it gives me more control than other massage devices with gun-style handles. When it comes to noise, the Mini makes a subtle, pulsing sound (around 61 decibels) on its lowest setting, but the two higher speeds are much louder, between 70 and 73 decibels. It comes in a stretchy, soft zip-up case that stows super easily in my carry-on luggage.

Best (less expensive) portable massage gun

Hyperice Hypervolt Go 2

Speeds: 3 | Grip: Angled | Battery life : 3 hours | Noise : Quiet | Accessories: 2 | Weight: 1.5 lbs.

When people ask me what portable massage gun gets my top pick, I’m often torn between recommending the Theragun Mini or the Hypervolt Go 2. Both are equally effective at relieving tightness, but a few features might make the Go 2 a better pick for you (besides its lower price). I’ve been testing the Go 2 for the past six months, and I like using it on my forearms and my neck and shoulders. Its motor is whisper-quiet, and it’s just as packable as the Mini, but I’ve found its battery lasts just a little longer than the Mini’s. The biggest difference is the grip. The Go 2 has an angled, gun-style grip, like the Trigger Point Impact, which makes it effective for pushing in and applying more pressure to your muscles and tight spots. The Go 2 is also $60 cheaper (as of this writing) compared to the Mini, and the least expensive option on this list. Ultimately, if you like the feeling of holding a traditional massage gun, but want a smaller, more packable version (that has a less powerful motor), then the Go 2 is your best bet.

8 Incidents in 2 Weeks: What’s Going on With United’s Planes?

While no one was injured, most of the mishaps required emergency landings or diversions. One safety expert said the incidents were not the result of “systemic problems.”

Two blue-and-white commercial airplanes with the word “United” painted on their sides sit on the tarmac at an airport.

By Christine Chung

An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap , a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway : These are among the eight incidents that have occurred over the past two weeks on flights operated by United Airlines. While no injuries — or worse — have been reported, the mishaps have generated headlines and stoked rising anxiety about aviation safety among federal officials and passengers alike.

All of the incidents happened on flights that took off from or were headed to airports in the United States, and five involved airplanes made by Boeing, a manufacturer already under intense scrutiny. In January, a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner in mid-flight, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.

United, one of the world’s largest airlines, flies aircraft manufactured mainly by Boeing and Airbus. In an email United began sending to customers on Monday, the company’s chief executive, Scott Kirby, wrote that while the recent incidents were unrelated, they were “reminders of the importance of safety.”

“I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” he continued, adding that every case was being reviewed by the airline and would influence its safety training and procedures.

Here’s what travelers should know about the latest in airplane woes.

What exactly happened on or to the planes?

Most of the incidents reported in the last two weeks required emergency landings or diversions.

March 4: A Boeing 737-900 departing from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston returned to the airport to make an emergency landing after one of the plane engines ingested and burned plastic wrap .

March 7: A Boeing 777 leaving San Francisco for Osaka, Japan, made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport after the aircraft lost a tire .

March 8: A Boeing 737 Max 8 veered off the runway upon landing at George Bush Airport in Houston and tilted onto the grass .

Later that day, a flight leaving San Francisco for Mexico City was diverted to Los Angeles after the Airbus A320 experienced issues with its hydraulic system.

March 9: An Airbus A320 heading to Salt Lake City turned back to Chicago O’Hare International Airport after it reported maintenance issues .

March 11: A Boeing 777, flying from Sydney, Australia , to San Francisco, turned back after takeoff because the plane had a hydraulic leak.

March 14: An Airbus A320 that departed from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport had a hydraulic leak shortly before it landed in its scheduled destination, San Francisco.

Later that day, a Boeing 737-800 that took off from San Francisco landed at Rogue Valley International Medford Airport in Oregon missing an external panel .

Are the recent issues typical, or cause for concern?

The mishaps were not the result of “systemic problems,” said Robert Sumwalt, a former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board who now heads a new aviation safety center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“Some of these issues are things that happen occasionally, but often don’t get reported in media,” Mr. Sumwalt said, though he emphasized that none were acceptable.

Kyra Dempsey, who writes about aviation accidents in a blog called Admiral Cloudberg, said that United’s recent issues were being “falsely conflated with Boeing’s troubles.”

“While it’s bad luck that United had so many incidents in such a short period, in general such incidents happen frequently around the world and they aren’t on the rise overall,” Ms. Dempsey said.

How has United responded?

Mr. Kirby’s 270-word message to United customers, including to members of the airline’s frequent flier program, started to be sent on Monday morning, said Josh Freed, a spokesman for United.

Starting in May, United pilots will have an extra day of in-person training, a change that was already planned before the incidents, Mr. Kirby wrote. The airline will also use a “centralized training curriculum for our new hire maintenance technicians” and will dedicate additional resources to the carrier’s supply chain.

What government agencies oversee these issues, and how are they responding?

The Federal Aviation Administration regulates the country’s aviation system and investigates safety incidents on U.S. airlines, while the N.T.S.B. investigates the causes of accidents, collisions and crashes involving planes flown by U.S. carriers, in addition to other accidents involving commercial and mass transit operators. Both agencies have discretion on what they investigate, Mr. Sumwalt said.

Currently, the N.T.S.B. is investigating the incident that occurred on March 8 in Houston, when the plane veered off the runway, an agency spokesperson said. The N.T.S.B. is also looking into a Feb. 10 Los Angeles-to-Newark flight , operated by United, that experienced severe turbulence, leading to injuries among more than a dozen passengers. (The Boeing 777 landed normally, but the flight was met by medical personnel.)

Safety experts said some issues don’t necessarily rise to the level of an investigation by either agency.

For example, partial loss of some of an airplane’s multiple hydraulics systems is common, said Michael McCormick, an assistant professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a former F.A.A. control tower operator. The F.A.A. may or may not get involved for this kind of issue, unless there’s a pattern, Mr. Sumwalt said.

The January episode involving the blown door plug aboard the Alaska Airlines jet is under investigation by the N.T.S.B. and the Justice Department.

Boeing: A Company in Turmoil

Boeing is weathering a particularly difficult period: two fatal crashes, a loose panel that blew out during a flight, quality concerns and production slowdowns..

United’s Planes : An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap, a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway: These are among several incidents that have occurred over two weeks  on Boeing flights operated by United Airlines.

Alaska Airlines Flight 1282: After a section of a plane headed for Ontario, Calif., blew out  10 minutes after it took off , there was increased scrutiny  on the plane’s manufacturer: Boeing . The Justice Department has since launched a criminal investigation .

Quality Control Issues: An audit that was initiated by the Federal Aviation Administration after the Alaska Airlines incident found dozens of problems  throughout Boeing’s manufacturing process and one of its key suppliers.

Whistleblower’s Death: John Barnett, a former quality manager for the company, was found dead in Charleston  in March with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was set to testify in a lawsuit in which he accused Boeing of retaliation for his complaints about quality and safety.

At Fault: A report released in February by the Federal Aviation Administration said that Boeing’s safety culture remains flawed , despite improvements made after two fatal crashes  in 2018 and 2019.

Solving an Enduring Crisis: The Federal Aviation Administration has asked Boeing to produce an action plan  to address quality control issues. We asked experts how Boeing should try and fix its longstanding problems .

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup comes to the United States for the first time this June as part of a co-hosting effort with the West Indies. Among the International Cricket Council games is the highly-anticipated India vs. Pakistan match-up. If you're looking to find tickets, then you're in luck, because we've rounded up everything you need to know about how to get India vs. Pakistan tickets for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Last year, India narrowly lost the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup to Australia despite a home-field advantage. India has won the World Cup twice, and Pakistan, their longtime rivals, has won the revered competition once. When it comes to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which is a more recently-created competition, both India and Pakistan have each won once, so the match on June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York is shaping up to be the main draw of the US portion of the competition this year.

Original standard tickets are a hot commodity and hard to come by, but you can browse resale ticket availability on websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats .

How to buy India vs. Pakistan tickets

ICC ran a ballot for original standard tickets in February, which received a massive response of more than three million applications, according to the ICC. While some tickets are still available on the official T20 website and more are occasionally released, original India vs. Pakistan tickets have sold out and are no longer available. A new wave of public tickets will be made available this week, but this will not include more tickets for the India vs. Pakistan game.

Tickets for the India vs. Pakistan game are available on resale vendor websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats . Due to the substantial demand, these are higher-priced than the original standard ticket prices.

How much are India vs. Pakistan tickets?

While it's unclear exactly how much the original standard India vs. Pakistan tickets went for in the ballot, the cheapest tickets for other matches at USA venues start at $35 (although India vs. Pakistan was most likely more). The only currently available India vs. Pakistan resale tickets on StubHub are $1,258 each. Vivid Seats listings are similarly priced, starting at $1,687.

Best cities worldwide

How to choose the best city to travel to or live in.

Have you ever asked yourself which city to visit next? Whether it is a longer vacation or just a short city trip, it is hard to decide when there are many things that have to be taken into account and when there is so much choice. New York vs Chicago , London vs Paris , a smaller or a bigger city, in the north or in the south? There are a few important factors that can greatly influence your city experience and should be taken into consideration when you choose your next trip like the weather, the population, the transportation and the cultural activities in the city. Maybe you are thinking about a life changing decision and you are asking yourself: Where should I live next? It is a difficult question, when you have to decide which city fits you the best, when you could choose between the best city to live in Europe or the USA. But what is the best city and how can you find out? To help you make this life changing decision, we have compiled a list with the most important criterias (voted by our users) that have to be taken into consideration when you want to find a new home for yourself as a single or together with your family.

There is a saying that there is no bad weather but rather the wrong clothing, but the bottom line is: The weather is one of the most important criteria, whether you are deciding on a city to live in or you simply want to enjoy a city trip. Especially if you are booking your trip in advance and you don’t know how the weather will be, the average temperature and the rainy days can give you a helpful estimation. If you are thinking about a city trip in the summer, it is important to consider that especially southern states like Arizona, Nevada, California and New Mexico and cities like Rome , Athens ,  Marseille , Seville , Madrid , Naples , etc. can get up to 40°C/ 104° F and sometimes even more. This can be pretty exhausting when running around for sightseeing, especially for people who are very sensitive to heat. In this case, a trip to the beach or a trip to northern cities can be more pleasant, since the average maximum temperature doesn’t often go higher then 15°C/59°F, for example in Berlin , London , Paris , Brussels , Stockholm , Amsterdam or Boston , New York , Detroit and Chicago . If you want to know more details, check out extreme temperatures in the USA and the weather extremes in Europe . While northern cities sometimes get pretty rainy and cold during spring and autumn, cities in the south are still pleasant in months like October and March. It is also important to consider if you like to participate in activities that need cold weather, like skiing, or if you prefer activities for warm temperatures, like hiking or swimming. Concerning precipitation, regions, like the west coast of Scotland, the west coast of Norway and the south of the Alps have the highest number of rainy days. So if you like to have it dry during your trip, cities like Athens, Madrid , Skopje ,  Las Vegas , Phoenix , and Los Angeles will most probably offer you a hot and dry weather.

2. Demographics

When choosing a city to live in or a city to visit, the population makes a difference. Cities with a lower population can offer a familiar atmosphere whereas individualism is bigger in cities with higher population like in New York or Tokyo , where people are more self-reliant and self-centered. As a single, a big city can be interesting for its big variety, but as a family a smaller city could offer you tranquility, comfort and most probably more nature than there is in a bustling city. For further information, check out the best cities to live in Europe or the best cities to travel in the USA and in Europe .  If you are with a family, check this out to find more information about the best cities to raise a family in the USA and in Europe or the best cities to travel with your family . The answer to the key question for any traveler - a big city or a small city- depends on the activities you are more interested in. For instance, cities with a higher population will often offer more cultural activities like museums, landmarks, theater plays or concerts, whereas smaller cities will most often offer you more nature with possibilities for hiking, climbing, skiing and even for wellness. Of course there are big cities with a seaside, beaches and a beautiful nature in their surrounding areas, like mountains, natural heritages, forest, lakes etc. for example New York, Munich , Barcelona, Buenos Aires and Athen . Check the most beautiful mountain towns and the best cities by the sea . In cities with a bigger population you will often find a more international population. For instance nearly two thirds of the international migrants live in Europe (76 Mill. ) or Asia (75 Mill.). In terms of population density Asia has the highest density followed by Europe, beeing the second smallest continent in the world and at the same time the third most populous continent after Asia and Africa. On the other hand Europe has the smallest annual population growth, whereas Africa has the biggest.

3. Culture & education

Cultural activities are one of most important reasons when choosing a city, if it is for a concert, an opera, a theater play, museums or even your favourite sports team, there are many possibilities for new experiences. If you are someone who is constantly looking for a new event, if you are a huge fan of a particular music scene or a sports team, or you have a favourite hobby or a religious community, that you want to be close to, a bigger city with lots of cultural offerings and sporting availabilities, would be the right choice for you. A good indicator for the cultural engagement of a city can be the number of museums. The cities with the highest amount of museum are London (162); Berlin (140) and New York (126). London and Paris have the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites (4) followed by Berlin with 3. Check this out to find out more about  the best cities for cultural activities . The number of universities in a city can indicate the median age of population as well as a general cultural activity. A city with more universities is always more attractive for younger people. Almost every big city in Europe and the USA (more than 1 Mill. habitants) have more than four universities. For more details, check out the best cities in Europe and the USA for students. If you are a student and you want to have a nice city trip but you don’t want to spend much money, a cheap city is the best way to get some fresh air and change your mind. Check out the cheapest cities in Europe to find out more about the prices in some cities concerning cheap transportation, food, housing etc.

4. Transportation

If you don’t plan to take the car to do your city trip or you cannot afford having a car in a city, the public transportation becomes a very important factor. But what are the cities with an outstanding transportation system, that facilitate your vacation and offer you a higher life quality and which ones are affordable? Check out the best transportation systems worldwide and continue for more info. The cheapest cities to travel around in Europe are in the east like in Russia, Bulgaria and Poland, the most expensive ones are Venice and cities in northern Europe. While a 24-hour tram/metro pass in Prague costs 4,38 Euro, a 72-hour tram/bus pass in Amsterdam costs 17,74. When you are living in a city a monthly ticket could be a good solution. For example, the price of a monthly ticket in Berlin is 81,00 Euro, in New York 89,00 $ and in Paris it’s even cheaper with 73,00 Euro. Some cities offer a even cheaper way to travel: Bicycles. You can rent a bike for a whole day from a shop or in some places they even have a city bike sharing system. If you like to discover a city by bike or if you prefer the bike as your transportation mode, check out the best bike-friendly cities in the world .

5. Cost of living

The cost of living has a great influence on the quality of your trip and especially on the quality of life when staying for longer. When moving to a new city, factors like the GDP (Gross Domestic Product), as well as the minimum and maximum income tax have to be taken into consideration. The Gross domestic product (GDP) is a way of measuring the market value of all final goods (like food, housing, clothes etc.) and services produced in a country in a year and can tell the economical performance of a city or country (Wikipedia). Considering the GDP the best countries to live in are the USA, China, Japan, Germany and the UK. Additionally, if you are interested to know which cities have the lowest cost of living, which might be interesting when you want to travel cheap, check out the cheapest places to live in the USA and in Europe . If you are looking for a new job in a new city, factors, like the highest and lowest income tax rate and the unemployment rate might be important. Countries that are greatly affected by unemployment problems are, for example, South Africa, Greece and Spain.

New york city.

Here's a look at the play ...

The Magic leads 67-32 at halftime.

MAR 18 ANTHONY BLACK JERSEY SWAP Orlando Magic rookie Anthony Black played just three minutes in the team's win on Sunday against the Toronto Raptors , but many on social media were talking about him after the game.

After the game, he swapped jerseys with fellow rookie Gradey Dick, who was the No. 13 overall pick in this year's draft.

The placement of the jerseys created a viral moment on social media and it's likely that the picture will be used as a meme for years to come.

MAR 16 SUGGS LOVES HIS TEAMMATES The Orlando Magic are vibing after picking up their 39th win of the season, and Jalen Suggs was feeling the love after the win on Friday against the Toronto Raptors.

Suggs and the Magic are back against the Raptors tomorrow night at home. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.

MAR 12 MOSLEY EXTENDED  Orlando Magic coach Jamahl Mosley isn't leaving anytime soon.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Magic and Mosley have agreed to a four-year extension.

The Magic are 93-106 in Mosley's three-year tenure so far, but a 37-win season and a likely playoff berth have prompted Orlando to keep him around until the 2027-28 season.

MAR 10 KLAY TRADE INTEREST WITH MAGIC It's been just over a month since the NBA Trade Deadline, and while the Orlando Magic failed to make a move, they had interest in making one.

SNY's Ian Begley is confirming that the Magic had interest in trading for Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson, who is an impending free agent.

Thompson could sign with the Magic this offseason with over $30 million in cap space in free agency.

MAR 3 MAGIC STARTERS VS. PISTONS The Orlando Magic will start Jalen Suggs, Gary Harris, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter Jr. against the Detroit Pistons .

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. ET from the Kia Center.

MAR 1 MAGIC MATCH LAST YEAR'S WIN TOTAL The Orlando Magic are 34-26 through 60 games this season. Last year, the team was 34-48 at the end of the season.

With all of March and half of April left to go, the Magic have matched their win total from a year ago.

Only the Houston Rockets , Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder have matched or exceeded their win total from last year so far this season.

The Magic's increase ranks fourth in the NBA behind the defending champion Denver Nuggets (139 percent), top-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves (107 percent), and Phoenix Suns (94 percent).

FEB 19 NETS FIRE VAUGHN A former coach of the Orlando Magic is looking for a new job.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski , the Brooklyn Nets are firing coach Jacque Vaughn, who played the 2002-03 season with the Magic and coached the franchise from 2012-15.

Vaughn, 49, has the Nets at a 21-33 record before the All-Star Break, which ended in a 50-point loss on Wednesday against the Boston Celtics .

FEB 17 MAC'S FIRST DUNK! Osceola Magic guard Mac McClung is looking to defend his Dunk Contest title, and he's starting off his defense on the right foot.

McClung received 48/50 for the dunk, putting him in second place going into the second round.

FEB 13 SHAQ TO THE RAFTERS! The Orlando Magic officially have a jersey in the rafters.

Take a look at O'Neal's jersey reveal, which took place after the Magic's game on Tuesday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

FEB 13 SHAQ VS. KANYE The Orlando Magic is all about Shaquille O'Neal on Tuesday as his No. 32 jersey goes into the rafters. But before the ceremony, O'Neal took to social media to share some words with rapper Kanye West.

West and O'Neal were at the Super Bowl on Sunday in Las Vegas, but Shaq wasn't a fan of Kanye's antics both during the event and prior.

The comment has since been deleted from Instagram, a sign that Shaq is moving on as he's being honored by the Magic following tonight's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
