Home Tours Tastings Winemakers Booking Travel & Accommodation Rhône Region About Us
We think the Rhône Valley is the most exciting wine region in France; from the majesty of Côte-Rôtie in the north to the warmth and generosity of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the south, there are wines to satisfy all tastes and we'd like to share them with you..
Unlike traditional tours, ours are flexible - a choice of six different day-long private tours covering both the famous classics and the undiscovered regions, with bespoke tours also available on request. Just tell us what you want to do and when you want to do it. It's as simple as that!
We pick you up from where you are staying and drop you off again at the end of your day's tour. And because the tour is organised just for you, with no big groups, you have the full attention of your English-speaking driver/guide and you really get to meet the people who run the wine estates and make the wine (dont worry, we can translate). All you need do is relax, taste and have a good time.

The Tastings
What could be better than touring Rhône wine country? Perhaps having Rhône wine country come to you!
Our tours are great or so you tell us (and Tripadvisor!) but the Rhône valley is long. Even we cant manage to be in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Condrieu during the same day. So we came up with an answer that means you can taste all of the regions greatest wines, from north to south, in one tasting without having to leave the comfort of your holiday accommodation.
You provide the space - the living room in your gîte or holiday villa, the poolside terrace, even your hotel suite if your hosts agree - and we come to you with everything else from the presenter and the glasses through to a selection of artisan cheeses and charcuterie, not forgetting, of course, a range of beautiful Rhône wines. We even clean up afterwards. There's no easier way to taste the wines of so many great regions.
The tastings are relaxed but informative and perfect for anybody who likes wine, so don't think you need to be an expert. (They're also especially useful if you have children and teenagers in your group and you don't want to drag them from winery to winery.)

Where Is the Rhône Valley?
Rhône Valley is an Old World Wine Region located in southeastern France . It’s one of the oldest wine regions dating back more than 2,000 years. It’s also a very large wine-producing region that follows the path of the Rhône River from its source in the Swiss Alps to its confluence with the Saône River in Lyon, and then south through the region of Provence until it empties into the Mediterranean Sea near Marseille.
The region is famous for its vineyards and diverse wine production, with wines like Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape being particularly well-known.
Both regions are known for producing distinct types of wine, so we’ll break them down for you below. It’s like a mini-wine class. Be sure to keep this in mind when you get there. It’ll come in handy.
Northern Rhône
The Northern Rhône is best known for its full-bodied red wines made from the Syrah grape. Some of the most prestigious appellations (wine regions) in the Northern Rhône include:
- Côte-Rôtie : Produces some of the most esteemed and typically most expensive wines in the Rhône Valley. These wines are made predominantly from Syrah, often co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier (a white grape variety).
- Hermitage : Known for robust and long-lasting Syrah wines. A white version from Marsanne and Roussanne is also made here.
- Cornas : Produces intense, full-bodied wines made entirely from Syrah.
- Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage : Both areas produce a more approachable style of Syrah, generally intended for younger drinking.
The Northern Rhône also produces white wines from Marsanne and Roussanne, including in the appellations of Saint-Péray , Hermitage , and Condrieu (which is famous for its rich, aromatic wines made entirely from Viognier).
Southern Rhône
The Southern Rhône produces a wide variety of red, white, and rosé wines. It’s best known for its red blends, which often include a mix of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre grapes (a combination sometimes referred to as GSM). The most famous appellations here include:
- Châteauneuf-du-Pape : The most famous appellation in the Southern Rhône, known for robust, complex red blends.
- Gigondas and Vacqueyras : Known for rich, full-bodied red wines similar in style to those from Châteauneuf-du-Pape but typically at a more approachable price point.
- Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages : These two appellations cover a large amount of vineyard area and produce a wide range of styles, but are best known for their value-for-money red blends.
- Tavel : An appellation known specifically for its high-quality rosé wines.
In addition to these more famous appellations, there are numerous others in the Rhône Valley, each with its own character and style of wine.
Which Rhône Wine Region Should You Visit?
The Rhône Valley is a large region and the Northern and Southern Rhône are quite distinct from each other, both in terms of geography and the styles of wine produced. They are roughly a two-hour drive apart, which can make it challenging to explore both in a single day trip.
If you’re interested in tasting a variety of wines and getting a comprehensive understanding of the region, spending a few days in each part of the Rhône Valley would be ideal. That would allow you to fully explore the vineyards, take your time at each winery, and avoid a rushed experience.
If your time is limited, you might want to choose between the Northern and Southern Rhône based on your wine preferences.
- If you particularly enjoy powerful, full-bodied red wines made from Syrah, then the Northern Rhône, with its prestigious appellations like Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, might be your choice.
- If, on the other hand, you prefer complex red blends or are a fan of Grenache, or you want a broader mix including some rosé and white wines, the Southern Rhône, home to Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône, would be a good option.
Wine Tours in Rhone Valley
Self-guided tour.
I usually prefer to do self-guided touring when I visit wine regions because it gives me the greatest flexibility and I actually really like researching and choosing the wineries I want to go to.
While there is a little more work involved because you have to set up all the appointments yourself, there are tools that will help make this super easy. The one I use is called Rue des Vignerons . It’s a French website that makes booking wine appointments super easy.
You can book online up to 30 minutes before and your appointment is confirmed instantly. This is the website I used to book all of my Champagne tasting appointments.
In our descriptions below, I will give you links directly to Rue des Vignerons for each winery so you can easily book it.
Group/Private Tour
If you don’t want to do your own planning/driving, there are many group and private tours to choose from. These often including up to 8 people and are on a pre-planned route so you don’t have to take care of a single detail.
Below are two tours we recommend:
Top Rhône Valley Wineries To Visit
Clos du calvaire.
Clos du Calvaire winery is set in the breathtaking Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation known for its bold Grenache-based red blends. The family-owned estate covers 81 acres that organically grows 11 grape varieties.
Soak up this winery’s gorgeous scenery and learn about their extensive history. They’ve been producing their signature red Clos du Calvaire, an ancestral cuvée, since 1923. The remainder of their range includes two red blends, Père Pape (Father Pope) and La Crau de ma Mère (My Mother’s Crau), and a single white, Père Pape Blanc.
The estate offers guided tours through its verdant vineyards and cellars, with wine tasting in the heart of the vineyard year round. Visiting hours depend on the season, and you can only attend by reservation via their website.
Domaine Galevan
If you’re visiting the quaint commune of Courthézon, Domaine Galevan should be your first stop. Today, this family-owned estate is run by a woman for the first time after nine generations. Join an informative tour to learn about the region and winemaking process, or indulge your taste buds with nine different types of whites and reds.
Encompassing 138 acres of organic vineyards, you’ll find some of the best Rhône grape varieties here. These include Syrah, Carignan, Mourvedre, and Grenache red variations, while the white types include Bourboulenc, Clairette, and Grenache Blanc. The quality of their wines is sealed with Protected Designations of Origin : Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages, and Chateauneuf Pope.
Domaine de Corps de Loup
Venture on an intriguing tour through lush vineyards in the sleepy town of Tupin-et-Semons. Domaine de Corps de Loup offers diverse tastings and some of the most sought-after wines in its region. Flourishing in the wine-making industry for over 25 years, the Daubrée family produces each bottle passionately.
This estate’s unique, authentic atmosphere, paired with luscious wines, results in a euphoric experience. Their main production of Côte-Rôtie (or roasted slope) since 1995 has put Corps de Loup on the map. In the early 2000s, they expanded into other terroirs , namely Condrieu and Saint Joseph. Visit any time of year for a guided tour or tasting by making an online appointment.
Ferraton Père & Fils
With a whopping 45 wines to their name, Ferraton Père & Fils is bound to be a hit among connoisseurs. Thanks to an idyllic vineyard, Tain-l’Hermitage, sitting on the banks of the Rhône River, they are able to produce such splendid wines in abundance. Some formidable cuvées worth trying out include Ermitage Le Méal, Hermitage Les Miaux Rouge, and Côte-Rôtie Lieu-dit Montmain.
You might be tempted to purchase one or two bottles after an enjoyable and relaxing tasting. With up to seven different tastes of reds and whites, you may have a hard time choosing which ones to leave with. Online reservations are required for tastings, and the cellar is open from Tuesday to Saturday.
Domaine des Peyre
Located in Provence’s Luberon Natural Park, Domaine des Peyre is a key destination for wine tourism. The estate produces AOP Luberon, AOP Ventoux, and IGP Méditerranée wines, and hosts an array of activities including wine tastings, seminars, and weddings.
Once a neglected property with a deteriorating 9th-century chapel and poorly-maintained vines, the estate has been transformed by Patricia Alexandre and Georges Antoun. Today, Domaine des Peyre is a modern and inviting venue.
At the winery, you can do a tasting, an aroma workshop, or a tour and tasting, where you can visit the vineyard, chapel, wine cellar, and newly renovated tasting room.
Domaines Pierre Gaillard
Embrace the most humble and expertly-curated wine tasting and touring experience at the Domaines Pierre Gaillard winery. With a significant emphasis on family, Gaillard promises quality and attention to detail from vine to bottle.
Pierre Gaillard discovered his love for wine-making at the tender age of twelve while plowing in the vineyards on horseback. Steeped in hard work and passion, these fertile grounds churn out deeply colored wines with strong tannins and fruity aromas.
The winery is best known for its local produce of Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, and Crozes-Hermitage blends. Wine enthusiasts will have a blast during the tasting with such a vast catalog.
Château Mourgues du Grès
The family-owned Château Mourgues du Grès invites you to a dreamy escape between vineyards and orchards in the Rhône Valley’s southern subregion. They promise to develop your wine palate with balanced, sharp, and aromatic wines.
Offering white, rosé, and red wines from organic agriculture, you’ll find something here for every taste. Their Capitelles and Fleur d’Eglantine rosé are excellent on a sunny day.
A tour and tasting generally last about an hour brimming with warm welcomes, history lessons, cave explorations, and delicious wines. These will show you through the cellars and vineyards, followed by a wine tasting, possibly by appointment.
Château Bois D’Arlène
Vacqueyras terroir of Rhône Valley is the most ideal alternative to Chateauneuf-du-Pape with both offering Grenache-dominant wines. You might pay a little extra for wines here, but the unspoiled landscapes and sumptuous vines of Château Bois D’Arlène are worth the splurge. Boasting enchanting forests, meadows, groves, and a traditional chateau — wineries couldn’t get more captivating than this.
The estate’s diverse and abundant landscapes are handled with care enduring only sustainable and environmentally-friendly practices. With such gentleness and respect, it’s no wonder wine-making thrives on these lands, curating some of the finest whites and reds.
Psst: Their award-winning L’Orée du Bois is a White Vacqueyras of note and quite the performer in gastronomy.
Domaine Moulin-Tacussel
Domaine Moulin-Tacussel reaffirms the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation’s claim to fame as the primer for all French wines. Explore the property’s history, discover the best vintages, and learn about wine and food pairings at this enchanting estate.
The family winner has been operational since 1976, using innovation and tradition to create some of the finest wines from the region.
Most of their blends consist of 75% to almost 100% Grenache grapes, with other variants like Syrah and Mourvedre making up the rest. Surrounded by a mythical village and magical scenery, it is here where you can get an insightful peek at how wines are made.
Les Vins de Vienne
Continuing our quest for the best Rhône Valley wineries, Les Vins de Vienne should inevitably pop up. Set in Chavanay, three passionate winemakers and friends joined forces to create some of the best Rhône wines.
The trio reinvented and revived the very first wines of a historical wine-growing area, Seyssul. These include three wines: Sotanum is their first vintage red produced in 1998, followed by Taburnum, the first white in 2000, and the second red, Heluicum, created in 2004.
With such a profound history in the winemaking scene, it’s only fair that enthusiasts visit this estate. Visits and tastings are only possible through appointments.
Domaine Saint-Pierre d’Escarvaillac
Vibrant landscapes and ethereal skies are the backdrops to this celestial winery. Domaine Saint-Pierre d’Escarvaillac boasts 13th-century Romanesque architecture that allows you to travel to ancient times. Not only a feast for the eyes, but their authentic and rich wines also offer a sensational affair.
Formally “La grange de la Cépède,” the estate was once owned by the Carthusian monastery of Bonpas, allowing monks to blend their wines in the same old vats. Experience rich history and tradition at its finest while learning all about the winemaking that makes this estate a prominent figure in the Avignon region. The winery produces three cuvées of reds, namely La Saint-Pierre, La Huppe, and La Cépède.
Maison Gabriel Meffre
Uncover the secrets behind wine-making, stroll through picture-worthy vineyards, and taste some of the finest blends in a stylish cellar. Maison Gabriel Meffre offers all this and more. This estate has been at the forefront of wine-making since its inception in 1936, being the first Rhône Valley winery to excel regarding social and environmental responsibility.
After 80 years in the business, it’s still revered for high-quality products, including sumptuous Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône wines. Using mostly old vine Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, and Cinsault grape varieties, you’ll get an authentic taste of Rhône Valley. Their cellar is open for wine tasting from Mondays to Saturdays.
Domaine Mayard
Located in the center of the commune of Châteauneuf-Du-Pape, Domaine Mayard has 12 hectares of organically grown vines. Arthur and Hugo Mayard, the sixth generation winegrower, have embarked on agroforestry with the aim of bringing more life and biodiversity back to the soil and the plants.
During your visit you can do a guided tasting, a gourmet tasting of wines paried with delicious local products, or do a tour and tasting to visit the estate followed by a guided tasting of their Châteauneuf-Du-Pape and Côte-Du-Rhône cuvées, mainly from old Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault vines.
Domaine de Poulvarel
Domaine de Poulvarel winery is located in Sernhac close to the historical site of the “Pont du Gard”. It’s a family vineyard that has been cultivated with passion for many generations. In 2004, Elisabeth and Pascal decided to create a private cellar on the family lands. The modern building was made with some stones of the “Pont du Gard”. The estate is a HVE (High Environmental Value) certified vineyard.
They have several tasting options for your visit. You can do a free tasting of the vintages of your choice, or you can do one of two tours and tastings – a discovery of the storehouse and cellar, or a walk through the “Perrottes and Cantarelles” tunnels, relics of the Roman aqueduct and the “Pont du Gard”.

On the first day you’ll explore the steep hillsides of Cote-Rotie and Condrieu. It defies belief that the Romans would cultivate the vine on such a terroir, and then produce some of the world’s truly classic wines from Syrah and Viognier.
Our welcome dinner tonight will be a gastronomic affair to remember.
The icon wines of Chapoutier
Jaboulet: aspirational wines..
The hills of Hermitage
On the second day we explore the tiny hill of Hermitage, just thirty minutes drive south. This is the most famous appellation in the northern Rhone.
Wines from here used to be blended into the Bordeaux first growths to “improve” the Bordeaux. Prepare to get schooled on the world’s benchmark for Syrah, and discover the amazing whites from Marsanne and Roussanne.
After visiting Hermitage we head back to the luxurious hotel for a free evening in the beautiful city of Vienne.
The Historic city of Avignon
AVIGNON & THE SOUTH
On the third day we travel a few hours south to Avignon, a gorgeous Roman city, and the gateway to Provence.
From the comfort of our historic five-star hotel we strike out to learn about the intricacies of Grenache, and the twelve other varieties that are permitted in a Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
The landscape of the south is totally different from the north, and so are the wines.
Powerful, spicy, earthy, meaty, these wines have won legions of fans around the world, making this appellation a household name.
The incredible rocky soils are a site to see, and so are the castles housing wineries.

TAVEL & BEAUMES DE VENISE
Tavel is the benchmark for the world’s best Ros é . Deeper, fuller and complex, these are serious wines.
We also explore the lesser known wines from Beaumes de Venise, home to a lighter style of Southern Rhone reds but is most famous for its delicious sweet Muscat wines.
You’ll feel like you’ve seen and tasted the best of the Rhone in five memorable and fun-filled days.

TESTIMONIALS
Rhone – an unforgettable experience.
“Wow, what a week! The Rhone Valley tour was an amazing and unforgettable experience. The itinerary put together by Fine Vintage was outstanding, with visits to the who’s who of producers in both the Northern and Southern Rhone.
The two hotels we stayed at over the week were first class and I, for one, felt very pampered by the quality of service and those small little touches that make all the difference. The choice of restaurants we ate at was exceptional.
Our host and guide, James Lawther MW, has an unrivaled knowledge of the region, and that brought an added dimension to the week. I would have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending this tour for anyone who has a passion for wine!”

Mythic wine districts in a landscape bathed in sunshine
As the second largest wine-growing region in France, the Rhône Valley vineyards thrive on both sides of the eponymous river. Some of the most famous wines in the world come from here. The valley also revels in a rich architectural heritage.
From Lyon to the Camargue, passing through the regions of Provence and the Luberon, the Rhône Valley vineyards are divided into two large wine-growing areas. To the north, the Septentrional vineyard clings to the abrupt hillsides in the steep mountain ranges; to the south, the Meridional vineyard enjoys the plains and gentle slopes. The 14 wine routes wind through historic villages in varying landscapes. They take you to the vineyards where the famous wines are made: Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Beaumes-de-Venise ... Between fields of lavender and olive trees, share special moments with the winemakers, learn about wine and enjoy the hundreds of wine events . Under the southern sun, discover the Palace of the Popes of Avignon , the Pont du Gard, or the ornate Pont-d’Arc cave.
The diversity of the wine-growing areas , due to the complex soils and variations of the Mediterranean climate, gives the Rhône Valley wines their unique character . Mostly reds, the wines of the Rhône are divided into three colours . In the north, robust but fine reds and aromatic whites. In the south, more full-bodied reds, expressive whites and round and fruity rosés. Sweet wines complete this large range.
1. See the famous cities of the region: Lyon, Vienne, Valence, Vaison la Romaine, Orange, Avignon, Nîmes, the hillside villages of the Luberon.
2. Take the 14 wine routes by car, on foot, by bike, on horseback, or in the air!
3. Taste the combinations of great wines with local delicacies: olives, truffles and goat’s cheese.

Rhone Valley wine tours
Travelling across the Rhone Valley vineyards is a discovery of the Northern Europe and the Mediterranean world at the same time, through its history, its geographical position and its river. This vineyard is like the two sides of the European continent: the northern Rhone sub-region is characterised by a continental climate whereas the southern Rhone Valley has a Mediterranean climate with driest vineyards, producing powerful, spicy red wines made with Syrah and Grenache. Go on a wine tasting weekend in the Rhone Valley is a subtle combination of wine and gastronomic tourism, between the gastronomical capital Lyon in Rhône-Alpes region, colorful dishes of Languedoc -Roussillon and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Mediterranean food.

You drive about one hour to the first winery, taste 6 delicious wines then head to a scenic overlook of the Rhône valley. We stopped at a restaurant in Tourlon. Lunch is at your cost but the place they took us to was excellent and very reasonably priced. Then you stop at the second winery and taste an additional 5-6 wines. Wines we tasted were Viognier, Rousanne, Marsanne and Syrah. A glorious day with a wonderful guide. Drive back was about 1 hour 15 minutes. Read more Written April 11, 2024

She was very knowledgeable, engaging and brought us to the most delicious restaurant for lunch. We tried 3 different locations ranging from single family winery, small operation scaling up and a coop of over 200 growers. Wine was delicious with a wide variety showing the range of the valley. The entire trip was full of laughs, good answers and I can say I learned a lot on this trip. Cannot wait to come back to the region to explore more and cannot suggest taking a tour with Raphaelle more. Read more Written November 25, 2023
- Knappfamily 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Eddie is the best! My husband and I had a fantastic time with Eddie traveling to three wineries in the Beaujolais region. Immediately he had some fun conversation starters/games in the van to get the group aquainted. It was a great ice breaker and from that point on we could tell he had a great knowledge of the region and the wines we were going to taste. This wine tour is not just about drinking wine but experiencing history, architechture and culture of an incredible area of France. On our second stop we had a great lunch. The restaurant had a great selection of soups and main courses and a fix prix selection of menus. I insist on ordering the lamb if it is available. Eddie is the type of guy you would invite to your house for a dinner party any chance you get. We feel we have a friend in France for sure and hope to stay in touch as he had wonderful recommendations for restaurants etc in Lyon. We are big fans of this wine now and once home ordered a case of the amazing Rose from Matthieu at Chateau des Bachelards. One bit of advice I will give you is when making your reservation please be sure to share a number where Eddie can call you if he is looking for you at the meeting point. He is very diligent and concerned about making sure he collects all of his guests to get on the road and make the most of the day. It's a full day and he packs a lot in so be early! Merci Eddie! Eddy, our tour guide, was knowledgeable and helpful, and was very patient with my 85 year old father, who I brought with me on the tour. The small group size made it personable, and it was an experience I won’t forget. I highly recommend this tour. Read more Written October 19, 2023

We learned so much about the Syrah, Viognier, and other lesser known varietals. Our guide, Mathilde, was very knowledgeable, organized and helpful. We visited a small family winery first, with tastings, then a delicious three course lunch in a lovely restaurant on the banks of the Rhone River (we paid for our meals). Then an amazing tour of another winery in the Saint Joseph area with a fantastic sommelier who was full of information, funny stories and passion for his craft. Finally, Mathilde took us up to the top of Hermitage Hill for a 360 view of the Northern Rhone river valley with white and red Hermitage wines served from the back of her van - great tailgating, thanks, Mathilde! Returned at exactly 5 o’clock, good driving. Definitely recommend this tour. Read more Written October 10, 2023
- SamS967 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful, but better to go with a group tour First of all, I would recommend doing a group tour. I was brave and foolish enough to drive and it was quite difficult even with Google Maps. We started in the morning from central Lyon and after navigating narrow streets and tunnels and heavy rush hour traffic, we finally were driving next to the river. We stopped at the first wine village on the map but everything was closed. So we put the next stop on the GPS and drove. Much to our dismay, we ended up back in central Lyon. The lesson: be very careful when entering destinations as one wrong letter can send you to the wrong place. We re-started and drove straight to Villafranche-sur-Saone. Almost no one in this small town spoke any English, so it was hard finding our way around and the signage was non-existent. We had lunch and then located the tourist office who were very helpful. She called a few wineries and found one where we could do tastings and gave us detailed directions. We then did the scenic drive along the Saone River and did some wonderful wine tasting. We stopped at Chatillon d'Azergues, where the wine maker and his assistant were super friendly and helpful and we ended up doing a free wine tasting. The wines were great and we also ended up buying a couple of bottles. On their recommendation, we then drove to the gorgeous medieval town of Oingt. This town is beautiful with an old walled city, medieval churches, houses, cobblestone streets and killer views of the Beaujolais region, as it is perched on a hill. Fortunately, the drive back to Lyon was quick (on the freeway) and uneventful. Read more Written October 10, 2023

If you’re not familiar with the difference between Northern Rhône and other regions - that’s OK. She explained the regions and the tour was easy to follow for those without a lot of wine knowledge. However, for those who know the region will really appreciate the winery selection and will learn a lot too. Lunch was very well selected, too. Overalll, fantastic day - highly recommend! Private Rhône Valley Wines Tour
When we started sampling French wines in earnest nearly forty years ago, wines of the Rhône Valley region had lost much of the glory they had enjoyed 100 years before, when they were known as equal to the finest that France had to offer. We often surprised even the most knowledgeable of our connoisseur friends with blind tastings of Côte-Rôtie and Chateauneuf-du-Pape selections, which they often mistook for the most noble Burgundies or illustrious Bordeaux. Today, largely through the efforts of a few individuals, the great Rhône red wines have largely regained their former reputation, and this Rhône wine tour does homage to the achievement.
When it comes to Rhône wine tours, no one does it quite like Paris Luxury Tours. We start our Rhône wine tour with a TGV (high speed train) ride from Paris to Vienne, where we check into the renowned 2-starred Pyramide hotel/restaurant. After an appetite-whetting stroll through the ancient Roman ruins of the city (with its astonishing Temple of Augustus and Livia), we begin our Rhône wine tour at Pyramide with a meal designed around the whites of near-by Condrieu and the reds of Côte Rôtie. In the afternoon, we indulge in Côte Rôtie at either Barge, Bernard, Burgaud, Champet, Chapoutier, Clusel-Roch, or Delas. We will also sip Condrieu whites at either Gangloff, Guigal, Jaboulet, Andre Perret, Niero Pinchon, Vernay, or Verzier. The tasting venue is determined at the time, according to the engagements of these remarkable producers. For those that wish to stock their cellars here, we also will be pleased to assist in arranging facilities for shipping your purchases home. We conclude our first day at the starred Domaine de Clairefontaine in near-by Chonas l’Amballan, where we will have dinner designed around Viognier and Côtes du Rhône wines.
The second day of our Rhône wine tour begins with a drive down to Tain l’Hermitage, the capital of the second heavyweight of the Rhône. Here we will savor reds wines at either Belle, Chapoutier, Chave, Delas, Desmeure, Faurie, Sorrel or Tardieu-Laurent. Lunch will follow at the starred Rive Gauche restaurant, where we will have a meal conceived around Septentrionale wines. Tours begin again after lunch when we proceed to a sampling of still and sparkling whites from some of the same producers. We end our second day checking into the famous Pic Hotel/Restaurant (2-stars in Michelin) in the town of Valence, where we will stroll through the Old Town, spend the night, and enjoy a dinner tailored around St. Péray and Hermitage wines.

Our final day begins with a drive to the southern Rhône district of châteauneuf-du-Pape, the third star of Rhône reds, where we will experience reds (and whites) at either Châteaux de Beaucastel, Fortia, Gardine, Mont Redon, La Nerthe, Rayas, or Domaines de Beaurenard, Bosquet des Papes, Les Cailloux, Font-de-Michelle, Grand Tinel, Pegau, Clos de Mont Olivet or Clos des Papes, Clos St-Jean or Vieux Donjon. We have our final meal at the starred Europe restaurant in Avignon, designed around Côtes du Rhone and châteauneuf-du-pape wines. Our tour finishes with a visit of the city’s highlights and a TGV ride back to Paris.
“Shahin, Just a quick note to let you know how much we enjoyed the tour of the Loire Valley [Custom Loire Valley Day Tour from Paris of 2 chateaux and 1 wine estate]. Let me start by saying the best part of the trip was meeting you and listening and learning about the history of France and specifically Chenonceaux. Your comments and guidance throughout the day made the experience far more than just a sight-seeing trip. Lunch was great and so were Amboise and the wine tasting. I can’t thank you enough for putting this tour together for us, we will enjoy the memories for years to come. Merci beaucoup,”

Best Wine Tours from Lyon in 2024
A visit to Lyon, the capital of French gastronomy, would not be complete without indulging in the region's finest wines. France is famous for its wine culture, and it's an integral part of the French culinary experience. The elegant and historic city is blessed with several vineyards and wineries that produce exceptional wines, which are a delight to wine enthusiasts. Lyon is surrounded by beautiful vineyard regions that showcase a vast array of different wines. Whether you're looking for a half-day Beaujolais wine tour or a day trip to Rhône Valley, you have options. In this article, I've highlight some of the best wine tours you can take around Lyon and why they are worth exploring.
Who am I to advise you? I'm an expert sommelier (WSET 4) who's lived in Lyon since 2017 and runs Lyon Wine Tastings , wine tastings in native English that cover Burgundy, the Rhône, and Beaujolais.
I know there are a lot of lists online, made up by faceless companies like Viator/Tripadvisor and GetYourGuide whose algorithms create pay-to-play rankings depending on how many bookings tour operators give them. I am recommending wine tour operators that I can vouch for, that have been around for years and are run by real experts. Third party sites like Viator take between 25 and 40% booking fees. Please book directly to support independent local businesses.
Keep in mind that a wine tour will take up most of your day and require lots of time in the car, even a half-day tour. If you want to learn about all of the wines that surround Lyon, including the rarest and most expensive wines in the world, Burgundy, then you might want to enjoy an afternoon wine tasting in the heart of Lyon with me instead. If you do have time to do both, doing my educational tasting first will set you up to make the most of your time with winemakers, engaging more deeply with your newfound knowledge.
What to Expect on a Wine Tour from Lyon
When it comes to wine, there are few better places to explore the picturesque vineyards than Lyon. As the capital of French gastronomy, this beautiful city is surrounded by some of the country's most renowned wine regions, including Burgundy. In this article, I'll take a closer look at what to expect on a wine tour from Lyon, exploring some of the top tours you can book. Whether you're a seasoned sommelier or simply looking for a fun and informative day out, there's plenty to discover on a wine tour from Lyon.
The group wine tours that leave from Lyon will be run by native French speakers and will be in both French and English for both French and English speaking guests.
A wine tour from Lyon will either visit the Northern Rhône or Beaujolais. Both of these vineyard areas are close to Lyon, about an hour away in either direction. I do not recommend trying to do a day trip to Burgundy from Lyon, unless you want to spend 6 hours + in the car. As it is, any wine tour from Lyon will include at least 3 hours of driving, including driving between locations.
Options include half day, full day, private, and group tours. Read on to discover my favorite tour companies that do wine tours from Lyon.
If spending a big part of the day in the car doesn't appeal to you (especially if you're just in town for a couple days), you can book an exploratory wine tasting featuring all of our local wines, including Burgundy, right in the heart of Lyon.
Visiting the Northern Rhône from Lyon
The Northern Rhône is one of the most prestigious regions in France for good reason. Its vineyards are known to produce some of the best full-bodied red wines in the world, with a flavor profile that is rich, complex, and wonderfully earthy. During wine tours from Lyon, visitors can expect an hour drive to the terraced vineyards of the Northernmost appellation of the Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie.
Most tours will drive an hour to start in Côte-Rôtie and visit the largest and most famous producer, Guigal, who have a tasting room and a wine museum. You will not be able to visit the winery itself. The reality is that the top producers in Côte-Rôtie like Jamet, Stephane Ogier, or Rostaign, do not accept tourists as visitors. While there are a handful of producers who do tasting room visits, even fewer will see you meeting winemakers or touring the winery.
This applies throughout the region, as it is not particularly developed for tourism and they produce miniscule quantities of wine, which are allocated, so they barely have any wine to sell you. It's rough! If you want to visit the wineries of the prestigious Hermitage, you will need to travel another hour South down the Rhône.
Visiting Beaujolais from Lyon
The Beaujolais wine region is known for its fruity, bright reds, and makes for an excellent day trip from Lyon. The vineyards of Beaujolais are perched on the hillsides, with views across the valley sometimes straight through to the Alps. Visitors can explore charming villages and family wineries, stroll through beautiful vineyards, and sample delicious wines that are perfect for pairing with Lyon's famous cuisine.
A tour will drive about an hour North and likely stay around the less prestigious, southern part of Beaujolais, the beautiful Pierres Dorées, or Golden Stones, named after the lovely yellow stone the villages are built from. You can expect much more access to winemakers in Beaujolais, they have much more time for visitors and are more welcoming than the producers in the Northern Rhône.
The wines can be quite simple reds, but the convivial atmosphere more than makes up for it, and it truly is stunning countryside! The superior wines of Beaujolais tend to be located in the Crus of Beaujolais, further north. The producers here are still just as friendly, but produce more powerful and finer wines.
Personally, I'd take a Beaujolais tour over a Northern Rhône tour any day, I think the people are way nicer and the landscape is more beautiful. While the wines may be less prestigious, they are still delicious.
Visiting Burgundy from Lyon
Is a terrible idea. It's really not close enough for a day trip.

Book a private wine tour in Lyon and enjoy a truly unique and unforgettable experience in one of the world's most beautiful wine regions.
All of the operators below offer private tours, as do I! I am more expensive than them though because it's not my primary business and I have to hire a driver. My private tours are highly custom and include a chauffeur, visiting 3 top producers, and a gastronomic lunch. Contact me directly with your dates and the number of folks for a quote.
Group Wine Tour from Lyon
If you're a solo traveler or a group of friends looking to make new friends, a group wine tour is the perfect way to experience the wine regions around Lyon. With a knowledgeable guide and fellow wine enthusiasts, you'll explore some of the best vineyards in the region while learning more about the history and culture of wine-making.
One of the benefits of taking a Group Wine Tour is the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals who share a passion for wine. You'll be able to ask questions and discuss tasting notes with others, making the experience more social and engaging. Additionally, a knowledgeable guide will be there to answer any questions you may have about the wines, the vineyards, or the region's history.
Most importantly, a group tour will be significantly cheaper than a private tour as you're sharing the cost with others.
Half-Day vs Full-Day Wine Tour from Lyon
In my opinion a half-day will be rushed, and you won't have as immersive an experience. I recommend full day tours! If you don't have time for that, a tasting with me is the perfect solution that only takes up 3 hours of your time.
The Best Wine Tour Operators from Lyon
There are a lot of wine tours online these days, and honestly I have no idea who they are or where they're finding their wine experts! What I can tell you is that contacts matter, as does experience. The operators that you can trust to give you the real deal experience are these three. Sadly nobody's giving me commission but they totally should right?

Lyon Wine Tastings
Ok so I don't do a lot of tours, I only do private, custom, high end ones when someone reaaaally wants it, but if you want to level up your wine knowledge with the full attention of an expert Somm, then my Wines of Lyon tasting is exactly what you need.
My tastings are awesome because I share all of the different wines of the many regions that surround Lyon, and I don't waste any of your time in a car. I also have A/C which doesn't suck. And a super cute dog named Buffy who sometimes joins us for our tasting.
My tastings are deeply educational but also super fun, and you will leave knowing a lot more about wine than you started with!
In conclusion, there are many great wine tour operators to choose from in Lyon, depending on the type of experience you're looking for. For a more intimate and educational experience, I highly recommend either taking a private tour with me or going for a tasting. Happy tasting!

Self-Guided Wine Tour of Northern Rhone Valley
- August 29, 2023
The Rhône Valley in southern France is renowned across the world for producing premium red, white, and rosé wines. The distinctive topography that makes up the highly acclaimed area was created during the last Ice Age when the Rhône Glacier pushed its way across southern France to produce the Rhône River. The vineyards in this region, which date back to the 4th century BC, can be found on both sides of the river between Vienne and Avignon and are divided into two sub-regions: the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône. This region spans a total of 505 miles from its headwaters in the Swiss Alps through France and into the Mediterranean. Even though the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône share the Rhône River, the two sub-regions are very distinct from one another and have different topographies, climatic conditions, soil types, and grape varietals.
The Northern Rhône Valley is a tiny wine region along the Rhône River that stretches from the town of Vienne to Valence. It takes roughly an hour to drive the entire region, which is around 75 kilometers (46 miles) long. This region is known for its granite soils and steep, narrow hillsides, which force vineyards to work with a constrained amount of space. As a result, vineyards are grown on terraces with low walls known as “chalais” that hold the soil in place. The temperature in the vineyards is milder than in the southern Rhône and rainfall prevents the vines from going through a drought.

The Northern Rhone is much smaller than the Southern Rhone, measuring only 2,836 hectares. The region’s northern beginning is in Ampuis, which is 30 kilometers south of Lyon, and its southern end is in Valance, which is a little over 90 kilometers away. Chateauneuf du Pape is smaller in size than the entire Northern Rhone Valley! To put this in perspective, 95% of the wine produced in the Rhone Valley originates from grapes in the Southern Rhone. The Northern Rhone Valley produces only 5% of the wine made in the Rhone. Most people are familiar with the South Rhone. There is therefore much to learn from the Northern part of the Rhone Valley, which is why it should be on your must-visit list. The unique climate, terrains, and soils make this wine-growing region quite different from other places.
The best time to go is between April and July because the weather will probably be nice. Many producers will be on vacation in August, and they will be focusing on the next vintage in September. It can rain in October.
What is the History of Northern Rhone Valley
Grapes were produced in Marseille during the Greek colonization in the fourth century BC. In the first century AD, wine-growing began in the northern Rhone Valley. Soon, Rhone wines were on par with those from Italian vineyards. During this time, the most significant Roman winery discovered to date, the Gallo-Roman villa of Molard near Donzère, adjacent to the Rhone, was constructed. Amphora-making workshops emerged around the same time. The earthenware containers (or dolia), used to transport wines and fish sauces, show that clay was also present during this early time, as seen at Chusclan, Treques, and the Cèze massif.
Pope Gregory X received the Comtat Venaissin from French King Louis VIII in the 13th century. The papacy relocated to Avignon in the fourteenth century, and the popes—great admirers of the local wines—planted a sizable vineyard all around the city. The second of the seven popes from Avignon, John XXII, had a summer home constructed in Châteauneuf du Pape. The Palais des Papes was constructed on orders from Benedict XII, the third pope from Avignon. Later, around the end of the 17th century, and for the following 200 years, the Roquemaure (Gard) port developed into a significant hub for river cargo trade.
The Rhone Valley actively participated in the creation of French wine industry appellations out of concern for the quality of its wines. The brilliant Baron Le Roy promoted this admirable cause in the 1930s. He was a vineyard owner in Châteauneuf du Pape who pushed for the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée designation for this outstanding wine in 1933. His proposed terms of reference, which included restrictions on the growing area, grape types, regional customs, cultivation techniques, a minimum alcohol percentage, and a harvesting period, became the template for all later AOC decrees. Additionally, he advocated for Côtes du Rhône wines, a legendary brand that recently earned the recognition it rightfully deserved.
The following sub-regions can be found in the Northern Rhône: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Château-Grillet, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, and Saint-Péray.
The main grapes grown in the Northern Rhone Valley for white wine are Roussanne, Marsanne, and Viognier. When Syrah grown in the Cote Blonde region of the Northern Rhone is added, Viognier is most frequently used as a blending grape in Cote Rotie.
There are several historical sites you should visit in the wine region.
- Château des Bachelards
The Benedictine monks of Cluny founded the Château des Bachelards vineyard circa 1100. The wines are a part of this line and have dual certifications as organic (FR-BIO-15) and biodynamic (Demeter).
- Chateau De Poncié
The Château de Poncié is a 1,000-year-old property; the earliest recorded accounts are from 949. It consists of 100 hectares that have been converted to organic farming, 40 of which are solely used for vines. In order to show visitors the full richness and wealth of the Fleurie en Beaujolais region, it conducts trips through vineyards and woods.
- Belvedere Museum
The two Belvedere buildings were created by renowned Baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt in the early eighteenth century to serve as Prince Eugene of Savoy’s summer retreat.
- Clos de la Bonnette – Domaine Guiller-Montabonnet
The small vineyard Le Clos de la Bonnette has a fascinating past. It has been there on the hillside in the middle of Condrieu since the Roman era, and who knows, perhaps much before. Using stones they extracted from the hillside using a mattock, men and women constructed terraces on the steep slopes for many generations, protecting them with dry stone walls. History was carved out of the rock and is a tale of arduous labor, sweltering heat, and thirst.
- Stéphane Ogier – Vigneron Côte-Rôtie
Stéphane Ogier joined the family estate, which had been established on the Ampuis Mountains for seven generations, in 1997. By taking over from his father Michel, he made the decision to perform meticulous work on his several terroirs in order to showcase the distinctive character of these historic locations. With a commitment to explore and elevate new terroirs, the estate has expanded its boundaries beyond those of the hamlet throughout time. Stéphane Ogier retains the sense of grace and subtlety that has come to be associated with his wines from his time in Burgundy.
- Domaine Rémi et Robert NIERO
The best Viognier and Syrah grapevines are harvested by the Domaine Niero on terraced hillsides in order to produce exceptional vintages of Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie. For a wine-tasting experience, it is the best winery to go to.
- Le Verger des Papes
It’s difficult to think of a more enjoyable experience than dining at this establishment. Its terrace offers amazing views since it stands adjacent to the castle walls. Fine produce, fine wines, and provencal cuisine.
- Domaine de Clairefontaine
This magnificent hotel, housed in a 17th-century country house and two annexes, is located on three acres of parkland, 5 kilometers from Saint-Clair-Les Roches train station, and 12 kilometers from the medieval Vienne Cathedral and the remains of a Roman Theater.
- Restaurant @ Le Beau Rivage
Visualize a former fisherman’s home with bedrooms that overlook the Rhône and a patio that is at the water’s edge. This hotel is a haven of quiet and a getaway for individuals who enjoy the tranquility. It is located in Condrieu, at the base of vine-covered hillsides. The inside is well-lit and features carved furniture, floral drapes, and gentle, warm shades of yellow, ochre, and white. The food is a flavorful fusion of Lyon specialties with elements from the south of France. Gastronomy is highly valued here, and visitors can even attend cooking classes!
- Château de Chapeau cornu
This charming rural inn, housed in a 13th-century turreted castle and surrounded by woods, is 17.6 kilometers from the center of Bougoin-Jallieu. There are formal, separately designed rooms in both the main house and other annexes. Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, minibars, oak or tile floors, and several canopy beds are included in every room. Seasonal cuisine is served in a chic restaurant with stone arches over the ceiling. A heated outdoor pool and five meeting spaces decorated in the period are additional features. Breakfast as well as wine and cooking classes are offered.
- Villa du Rhone
This peaceful B&B is located on lush grounds with sweeping views of the Alps and is 1.2 km from the Rhône river’s banks and 1.7 km from Gare de Miribel train station. Private balconies or terraces are a feature of the spacious suites with wooden accents. They all have flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, and bathrooms with en suites. A suite has two bedrooms and can accommodate up to five people. In a cozy dining area, breakfast is offered. There are also evening meals offered. Rich gardens, an outdoor pool, terraces, and a BBQ are additional luxuries. A lounge with a fireplace is also present.
The best way to save money in the Northern Rhone Valley wine region is to focus on exploring the small villages. Such villages have the best and the most historic sites thus giving an amazing experience at lower costs compared to townships.
The Northern Rhône is regarded as a somewhat sacred area and is best known as the birthplace of Syrah. The Northern Rhône, which covers about 7,000 acres and contributes only around 5 percent of all Rhône Valley wine production, is renowned for the quality of its wines rather than its sheer quantity. Additionally, although Syrah is what makes the Northern Rhône famous, the area also makes excellent Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. The only grapes cultivated in the Northern Rhône are these four varieties. This location is a fantastic wine tourist destination that you must visit because of the historical sites, landscapes, and people.
The vibe: Since Gallo-Roman times, wine has been produced in the Northern Rhône, which follows the River Rhône from Vienne to Valence. In Côte Rôtie and Hermitage, steep slopes with golden-hued stone terraces are tilled by hand with horse-drawn ploughs; you can find the sought-after reds. White wines with a strong scent, like Condrieu, are also produced in this picturesque area. Visits to the Ardèche or Vienne can easily be coupled with a trip to this must-see area.
