Stewart will launch the Eurythmics Songbook Tour this fall

Dave Stewart, the award-winning singer, songwriter, musician, producer, innovator and Eurythmics co-founder, is set to captivate audiences across Europe once again as he announces Eurythmics Songbook: Sweet Dreams 40th Anniversary Tour. Featuring Stewart alongside an all-female band of virtuoso singers and musicians, the tour promises to take fans on a nostalgic and electrifying musical journey spanning four decades of the iconic musical partnership’s groundbreaking hits.

The trek spans Europe in November with stops in Switzerland, France, Belgium, Germany, and others, including a hometown show in Sunderland UK.

Celebrating a remarkable 40 years since the release of the timeless “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This),” Eurythmics, known for their unique blend of synth-pop, new wave, soul and rock, have sold over 75 million albums worldwide since their 1980’s debut and have become enduring icons of popular music.

Following a highly acclaimed one-off Eurythmics Songbook show at London’s Royal Festival Hall in 2019 and with the blessing of musical partner Annie Lennox, who no longer tours, Stewart has decided to take the show on the road.

The duo, who still come together for one-off performances, such as for their induction last year into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , are delighted to be celebrating this landmark anniversary of “Sweet Dreams” and Stewart is relishing the chance to play a carefully curated selection of timeless hits from their extraordinary catalog of songs, live on tour for the first time in over 20 years.

“I love playing live shows and am so excited to be onstage with this amazing lineup of musicians and singers most of whom I have performed with on many occasions,” Stewart says. “My great friend Vanessa Amorosi an Australian legend known for her powerful vocal prowess, RAHH a brilliant artist/singer from Warrington with whom I’ve recorded and performed with for nearly 10 years and my daughter (Annie’s goddaughter) Kaya Stewart who was singing ‘There Must Be An Angel’ on Annie’s knee since she was five years old and since 14 years old has performed hundreds of solo shows wowing crowds with her very soulful and emotional voice. Choosing a band that is all outstanding female musicians led by the brilliant keyboardist Hannah Koppenburg is my way of paying homage to my great friend and collaborator Annie Lennox.”

The tour is set to be a fitting testament to the enduring impact of Eurythmics’ music and the duo’s lasting influence on the global music landscape.

Eurythmics Songbook: Sweet Dreams 40th Anniversary Tour promises an unforgettable experience, featuring state-of-the-art production and visuals, and a myriad of mega-hits including: “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” “Here Comes The Rain Again,” “Love Is A Stranger”, “Would I Lie To You”, “Missionary Man” and “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart).”

eurythmics 40th anniversary tour

Eurythmics fans have long hoped that the iconic ‘80s modern pop duo — consisting of supremely talented vocalist Annie Lennox and acclaimed musician Dave Stewart — might one day reunite and mount a major tour.

But that’s probably not in the cards, says Stewart, for the band that produced such memorable hits as “Love Is a Stranger,” “There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart),” “Here Comes the Rain Again” and, of course, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).”

“Uh, no,” Stewart says when asked whether the Eurythmics would ever tour again. “I would. But, you see, Annie has stopped touring and has said many times she doesn’t want to tour, doesn’t like touring.”

Thus, those wanting to hear the band’s classic tunes played in concert should consider catching Stewart’s Eurythmics Songbook: Sweet Dreams 40th Anniversary Tour, which sounds like a pretty good option given the rave reviews that the trek got during its U.K. and European dates last year.

The trek touches down on Sunday, Jan. 28 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, with Stewart serving as the opening act for longtime friend and headliner Bryan Adams .

“The first time I met Bryan Adams, he appeared onstage with me and Annie out of nowhere in Canada. I think it was about 1984,” Stewart recalls. “That was how I met him — he was suddenly onstage with us.”

This current trek marks the first time that Stewart has toured North America in roughly a quarter of a century.

“It wasn’t a really big tour,” Stewart remarks about the prior road show. “It was the Peacetour with Annie (in support of the Eurythmics’ last studio album,1999’s “Peace”). “I think we only played three places in America.”

The tour also serves as a well-earned 40th anniversary celebration for “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” the 1983 breakthrough effort that propelled the Lennox and Stewart to the upper echelon of the pop charts. The album and its title song made the Eurythmics MTV superstars and set the stage for all that would follow for the band, including being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

Listening to that album in 2024, it’s easy to hear why “Sweet Dreams” remains such a favorite with fans. It’s very much a part of the era, with, in particular, the savvy synth work of the title track still defiantly waving the “I want my MTV” banner. But there is so much else going on with the record, which bounces around through different types of instrumentation and arrangements as well as moods and feels.

“The whole album is a very sort of weird fusion of sounds,” Stewart notes.

The 71-year-old English musician has enlisted some top-notch players to help him bring those sounds to life on this tour.

“I’ve created a band with eight amazing female players and singers,” he says. “So, there’s a lot of women power up there.”

Of course, Lennox’s superb vocal work was so essential to the Eurythmics’ success story. And trying to find any one singer to try and handle all her different vocal stylings in concerts would indeed be a tall order. So, Stewart went another direction in putting together this touring band.

“I’ve got three different singers who can all handle different sorts of tones and qualities,” he says. “When I started looking at how would I play all these different songs, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s it. You don’t have to have one person singing everything like this — but (instead) you have different sounds of singers. Then the players can cover everything within this range.’”

Stewart says that the musicians he’s sharing the stage with are “all brilliant, sophisticated players” and that he gives them room to shine onstage. He doesn’t see himself so much as the star of the show, with his side musicians playing the routine role of a backing group. Rather, he views himself more as an old-fashioned band leader who occasionally steps up to deliver some guitar solos.

“It’s not like a bunch of people playing covers of songs,” he says of the production. “It’s like a whole new show.”

And what motivated Stewart to revisit the band’s songbook on tour?

“It’s because Nile Rodgers asked me if I would close the (2019) Meltdown festival in London, playing Eurythmics songs — which I hadn’t done in forever, you know,” he says. “So, I thought about it and I thought, ‘Hey, that would be good.’ That’s when I first came up with this idea of doing the songbook. It was all Nile’s fault.”

Not surprisingly, the show went over like gangbusters at Meltdown.

“The audience loved it,” Stewart says. “I thought, ‘This is a good idea. I’ll take this on tour.’

“Then COVID happened.”

Fortunately, the tour turned was still a good idea in 2023, as Stewart and company played numerous shows in the U.K. and Europe. Now, it’s America’s turn to enjoy the Eurythmics Songbook and relive the grandeur of the “Sweet Dreams” album during what should be highly nostalgic evenings for the fans — as well as, most definitely, Stewart himself.

“Every single song that we start to play, it’s like — vroom — straight back to the moment I wrote that or in the middle of recording it or how it happened,” he says. “It’s like how you can walk past a field of grass and somebody has just cut the grass and the smell of it — suddenly you’re 7 years old playing soccer for a second.”

While Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox have performed together occasionally in the 21st century they haven’t toured together since the ‘Peace’ tour of 1999. That tour included shows in Australia. There previous tour to that was in 1989.

Eurythmics ‘Sweet Dreams’ album was released in January 1983. Dave Stewart’s ‘Sweet Dreams’ tour will feature Eurythmics Greatest Hits and not the Sweet Dreams album.

His socials included a list of songs which is the setlist from the show completely missed the 1989 album ‘We Too Are One’ and the hits ‘Revenge’, ‘Don’t Ask My Why’, ‘The King and Queen of America’ and ‘Angel’.

The first album ‘In the Garden’ is likewise not mentioned but did not chart and had no hits, so that is understandable.

Also missing is the 1984 hit ‘Sexcrime’ from ‘1984 (For the Love of Big Brother).

Love Is A Stranger (from Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This, 1983) Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (from Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This, 1983) Who’s That Girl? Dave Stewart on Reimagining the Eurythmics’ Songbook on Tour with Bryan Adams

by Tina Benitez-Eves January 25, 2024, 1:39 pm

When Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020, followed by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame two years later, it prompted Stewart to revisit their Eurythmics ‘ catalog again, live. “Everyone was going on about ‘Sweet Dreams’ [Eurythmics’ 1983 album ‘ Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) ’] . and it was the 40th anniversary, so I thought ‘ I should do that,’” Stewart tells American Songwriter. “So I put a band together.” In 2023, Stewart returned to stage with the Eurythmics Songbook Tour and warmed up with a series of dates in Europe. As he commemorated the 40th anniversary of their breakthrough album Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) , it was also his first time performing since the Meltdown Festival in London, England in 2019. “I thought I could take this on the road, it should be great,” Stewart tells American Songwriter. “Then COVID happened, and I forgot about it.” Taking the show on tour with Bryan Adams in 2024 is almost like a “lithmus test” says Stewart. “It’s like an introduction of Eurythmics songs to America,” he says, “and the way you’re presenting them without putting yourself front and center straightaway.” Stewart’s connection to Adams goes back four decades, to the Eurythmics’ earlier days. “He jumped on stage with Eurythmics in Canada in 1984 or something,” remembers Stewart. “He would come by my flat sometimes and had got into photography.”

Becoming a professional photographer by the late 1990s, Adams photographed Lennox her for the cover of her 2009 greatest hits album The Annie Lennox Collection, along with other shoots with Cher , Iggy Pop , Jennifer Hudson, St. Vincent, and other artists. He also shot Lennox for the 2010 Hear the World campaign to bring awareness to impact of hearing loss.

[RELATED: 10 Songs You Didn’t Know Bryan Adams Wrote for Other Artists]

For the Songbook tour, Stewart reconfigured some arrangements and explored new interpretations of some of the Eurythmics’ iconic songs from “Here Comes the Rain Again,”  “Would I Lie to You?” and “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves,” and more, all set around an all-female band of vocalists and musicians. Along with Stewart on guitar are vocalists Judith Hill, who sang backing vocals for Michael Jackson and Prince, Vanessa Amorosi, RAHH, and Hannah Koppenburg, along with keyboardist Hannah Koppenburg, bassist Julia Lamb, and drummer Ellie East, and Indiara Sfair on harmonica. “It’s amazing, because although I’ve always worked with loads of female artists, I’ve never had a band that’s all female before,” says Stewart. “Obviously, there was Annie and I, but it’s just got a certain feel, but it’s not soft or anything. It’s woman power, and it’s great being behind that.”

His band of women was mostly pieced together by him messaging musicians directly on Instagram. “I think ‘Sisters are Doing it for Themselves’ sums it up,” says Stewart referencing Eurythmics’ 1985 hit, featuring Aretha Franklin . “It’s a gang of girls and me. I’m like this old band leader. It’s like Quincy Jones and his orchestra. I’m the person in the background with all the arrangements and a wall of amazing female power.” Stewart’s 23-year-old daughter Kaya —and Lennox’s goddaughter—will also perform in a number of shows on the tour. The younger Stewart released her self-titled debut in 2016 followed by If Things Go South in 2022, and recently formed the duo Kiss Bang with Max Mercier. “She’s a great little songwriter,” says Stewart of his daughter. “She’s always obsessed with music. She knows every song that comes on. It doesn’t matter if it’s some grime music out of England or some underground indie band from Nashville, she just seems she seems to know the words to everything.” On the Eurythmics tour, Stewart insists in having no one in the background on stage. “I encourage everyone—singers, soloists, everybody—to be up front. There’s no microphones over here or there for the backing vocalists. Everybody is in front, and I’m playing the role of a bandleader and conductor instead, and it’s great because then I can just help orchestrate.”

[RELATED: American Songwriter 2023 Legends Issue 2023 Interview with Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart]

Now 40 years after Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), Stewart admits that his connection to the songs has shifted, which is reflected in some of the new orchestrations around the shows. Performing the Eurythmics’ “Here Comes the Rain Again,” “Missionary Man” and other songs within their catalog is a different experience now. “I’m no longer thinking ‘Oh I did that [on the song], therefore it should be like this. These songs can stand in any kind of rearrangement.”

eurythmics 40th anniversary tour

He adds, “It changes. You look at everything from different sides, because as you get older, you have a different lens that you look through. I don’t know if I wrote it, or if somebody said it, but ‘Experience grinds the lens through which we perceive reality.’ It might be me that said it,” laughs Stewart. “I don’t know, but it’s a good quote.” (In a 2016 interview , Stewart said that his stepfather once shared the adage with him.) For Stewart, it’s less about keeping the songs precious and within one form and more about letting them evolve. “My experience of making that song [‘Sweet Dreams’] was every tiny nuance that made it on to that eight-track tape recorder,” he says, “so every time I would hear it, I heard the way I was trying to make it work. Now I hear it completely differently.” On tour, the Eurythmics 1986 song “Thorn in My Side,” transformed into a very “classy, strange jazzy arrangement,” on tour, says Stewart, with pianos, soprano sax, and the vocals set in a very ‘50s jazz way, along with a more acoustic version. Before revisiting the Eurythmics’ catalog, Stewart expanded his own solo catalog, releasing the autobiographical Ebony McQueen in 2022, a collection of 26 songs, the album sketches his coming-of-age years growing up in Sunderland in Northern England and banded to his first loves, music, and a blues voodoo priestess. A year later, Stewart released the jazz album Cloud Walking , which he co-produced with his new bandmate Koppenburg. In 2023, Stewart also collaborated with Joss Stone on original music for the musical The Time Traveller’s Wife , based on Audrey Niffenegger’s 2003 book and its 2009 film adaptation.

[Tickets to the 2024 Eurythmics Songbook Tour with Bryan Adams]

Prior to restarting his Eurythmics tour, Stewart also launched the creative collective, The Time Experience Project, featuring writers, composers, actors, and filmmakers. Along with Italian actress Greta Scarano and the Italian band Mokadelic, Stewart also released a 10-track rock opera, Who To Love in October of 2023, along with a companion film, which premiered at the Rome Film Festival. As he approaches 72 in September 2024, Stewart can’t make sense of the retiring. “It’s funny, because the two letters in the beginning of the word, ‘re,’ means you’re starting up or rewiring something,” says Stewart. “I don’t know where the word retire stems from.” He adds, “Retiring from what?”

Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” Traveled the World and the Seven Seas 40 Years Ago

Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart celebrated the milestone online

Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” Traveled the World and the Seven Seas 40 Years Ago

Eurythmics are celebrating 40 years of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).” The new wave classic dropped on January 4th, 1983, and both Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart took to social media to acknowledge the milestone.

“It’s almost impossible to believe that ‘Sweet Dreams are Made of This’ was released forty years ago!” Lennox said. ‘It has continued to travel the world and the seven seas ever since, which is a wonderful and miraculous story all to itself!”

Lennox added, “Songs are like ships…They have their own particular voyages and destinations.. Once they’ve been launched, there’s no turning back. You just have to follow the journey.”

“Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” was Eurythmics’ first US single, and it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The duo’s album of the same name reached No. 15 on the Billboard 200. In 1995, Marilyn Manson released a cover of the song with a music video that became known as one of the scariest clips of all time .

Last year, Eurythmics reunited for a rare live performance when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. U2’s The Edge provided the band’s induction speech, and Lennox and Stewart went on to play  “Would I Lie to You?,” “Missionary Man,” and, of course, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).” Watch clips of their induction ceremony here .

Bon Jovi announce new album Forever as part of 40th anniversary celebrations

Bon Jovi have announced the new album 'Forever'.

The 'Livin' on a Prayer' rockers will release their 16th studio record on June 7 as part of the group's 40th anniversary celebrations.

The first single from the album, 'Legendary', is out now and sets the stage for the monumental new record.

Frontman Jon Bon Jovi said: "This record is a return to joy. From the writing, through the recording process, this is turn-up-the-volume, feel-good Bon Jovi."

Bon Jovi's 40th anniversary celebrations are in full swing and continue on Thursday (14.03.24) when Hulu premieres the four-part docu-series 'Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story' at the SXSW Conference.

The series – which premieres on April 26 - features four decades of personal videos, unreleased early demos, original lyrics and unseen photos that chronicle the journey of the rockers from the clubs of Jersey Shore to the biggest stages on the planet.

Earlier this year, the group announced that the anniversary would be commemorated with the digital release of Bon Jovi Deluxe Edition.

Bon Jovi have also announced the release of an exclusive limited edition ruby colour vinyl LP on March 24 and limited edition cassette on April 5.

Jon revealed that he has had to overcome a number of issues in recent years, including serious vocal problems that afflicted him on the band's 2022 tour, and explained that "joy" is at the centre of the record after the challenges he has come through.

In an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, the 62-year-old singer said: "The overarching sentiment of this album is that of joy. How did I get to joy? I had to work through a lot of dark misery.

"I'm thinking about where to go musically and I run into a problem physically, where now I have to seek out a specialist in the field to do a vocal surgery that is not often done."
