The 10 day "Uganda and Rwanda Safari - Gorillas, More Primates and Wildlife Experiences" shall be starting when you meet with your local safari guide from Entebbe Airport upon arrival. Your flight should be arriving note later than 1 pm, otherwise you might consider spending the night in a hotel near the airport and striating off on the next day (we shall be happy to assist you on this arrangement).

We shall then set off driving to Lake Mburo National Park for our first African wildlife experiences. Our drive today is for about 4 hours on surfaced roads.

Along the way to Lake Mburo National park is the Equator line crossing point taken as one beautiful scenery in Africa - the pathway of the sun and take photographs. There are also several traditional organic fruit gardens, all so beautiful.

Shortly, you shall be entering the through the gates of Lake Mburo National Park for a rendezvous with the big grazers and predators of Africa. In fact you shall start encountering zebra herds before you enter the park. Inside the park, more wildlife is at your disposal to enjoy. Day 2: Wildlife Game drives in Lake Mburo National Park, Drive to the Kibale National Park

This morning we shall be having another game drive on the tracks of the park not covered on the day before. Some lucky guests have been able to spot leopard and a lion but hyenas are more common on such early morning game drives. Other more common wild game include warthog, topi, impala, duiker, bushbuck, waterbuck, eland, and zebra.

You could also consider a horseback safari for a more uniquely different way to get closer to the wildlife. With a horseback safari, you can quietly reach wildlife without the interruptions of motor vehicle noise. Although horseback safaris are available to all visitors in Lake Mburo National Park, priority is hight for those staying at Mihingo Lodge.

After the game drives, we shall be departing Lake Mburo National Park to Kibale National Park, widely considered as the Primate Capital of East Africa (and Africa by some).

This equatorial forest holds a higher diversity (12 species) and density of primates than any other African forest. Kibale’s primates include vervet, L’Hoest’s, red-tailed and blue monkeys, in addition to grey-cheeked mangabey, red colobus, black and white colobus, olive baboon and chimpanzee.

Kibale is the most ideal site in Uganda to seek wild chimpanzees and one of the few parks in Uganda where night excursions are permitted for those who wish to observe primates such as the unusual potto and various galago species (bushbabies).

After a short but detailed briefing, you shall be accompanied by the park guides to track down the habituate chimpanzees in Kibale.

You could encounter other primates in this forest even as you walk to the chimps, like black and white columbus monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabey, red-tailed monkeys, bush babies and pottos. If you are an avid birder, you shall not misroute on species like the yellow spotted nicator, rumped tinker bird, little greenbul, green breasted pitta, the crowned eagle, black bee-eater.

We can also make a go for the tree-climbing lions in the southern sector of the park, Ishasha Sector. After the game drives, we continue driving to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

Bwindi’s chief claim to fame is its resident, habituated population of mountain gorillas. These spectacular primates now number only around 1066, most of which live either at Bwindi or across the border in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. (Bwindi holds some 480 – 520 gorillas, in 18 groups.)

This ancient rainforest has 120 mammal species, perhaps more than any other national park in the country except Queen Elizabeth. Primates include L’Hoest’s, red-tailed, blue and colobus monkeys and the olive baboon. Antelope include bushbuck and 5 species of forest-dependent duiker.

Birders come to Bwindi to seek the 23 Albertine Rift endemics which thrive here. Of those, 14 are found nowhere else in Uganda. Some 200 species of butterfly have been recorded in the park and the colourful clouds of butterflies that congregate at bushpig wallows is a marvelous spectacle.

It is usually hectic trekking through the jungle and you should consider taking not less than 2 liters of drinking water with you in a gorilla trek in Bwindi.

There shall be a short but detailed briefing about the mountain gorillas of Bwindi and the general ecology of the forest. On most days, a local community group of women shall be perfuming traditional music and dance for the guests before departure into the forest.

After the briefing, the visitors are allocated to the gorilla group they shall be trekking to. Each gorilla group can be visited by a maximum of 8 persons per day. You shall also be accompanied by park staff including the park rangers, gorilla trek guides and trackers to give you all the required assistance for you to enjoy your gorilla trek experience. The walking can sometimes be tough and long, but when you catch a glimpse of the magnificent silverback, any discomforts will be quickly forgotten. When the gorillas are sighted, visitors will be guided to within 6 metres from the gorillas, sit around them for a whole hour while gazing into their big round eyes. Visitors to the mountain gorillas are only allowed 1 hour with them.

Be on the lookout for the other primates in Bwindi that include unhabituated chimpanzees, L'Hoest's, red tailed and blue monkey, black and white colobus, baboon, and Bwindi's most famous resident, the mountain gorilla.

Day 8: Cross from Uganda to Rwanda

After having breakfast we shall be crossing from Uganda to Rwanda via the border post of Chanika. A separate visa is required for Rwanda and Uganda.

The drive to Volcanoes National Park traverses the Virunga mountain ranges and the terraced hills of Southwestern region on either sides of the road and the rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which cuddles evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath.

You can spend the evening in the comfortable lodge and enjoy the silence of Volcanoes National Park.

Some gorilla families however are more elusive, and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy.

Alternatively you can take a nature walk with a guide from the park, learning about the flora and fauna of the forest.

Alternatively, you could go on a short trek to search for one of the troops of golden monkeys which inhabit the forest (this would need to be pre-booked, and is an additional cost).

Or climb the Visoke/Muhavura volcanoes, or, if you wish, you can visit the Iby'Iwachu Cultural Village, which will give you a fascinating insight into the traditions and history of Rwanda's people, or walk to Lake Bulera.

10-Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking & Safari Tours

Whether you’re talking habitats, wildlife or experiences, Uganda boasts what is probably the most varied safari circuit anywhere in Africa. Here, grassy savannahs, tangled rainforests and vast papyrus swamps stand alongside oceanic lakes, lofty volcanoes and snowcapped mountains. There are mountain gorillas, chimps and monkeys, but also lions, elephants and rhinos. And where most African safari circuits focus on game drives, the range of activities in Uganda also includes forest hikes, mountain climbs and boat excursions. Spending 10 days on safari in Uganda allows you to appreciate much of this wonderful country’s ecological diversity, to see most of its wildlife icons, and to experience a wide range of activities on offer.

5 Questions About 10-Day Uganda Safaris

Philip Briggs

Answered by

Philip briggs.

10 days uganda rwanda safaris

Is 10 days a good amount of time for a trip in Uganda?

“Many people would regard 10 days to be the ideal duration for a Uganda safari. It is sufficient to cover all the main national parks in Uganda’s varied western circuit in a reasonably unrushed manner, but not so long that you can’t tag a beach or other extension to your holiday. Having said that, if you plan to cover the western circuit in full, from the southwestern gorilla trekking reserves to the more northerly Murchison Falls NP, you might consider allocating a couple more days. Extending your itinerary, for instance to 12 days, would allow you to do more activities and fit in more downtime between days dominated by driving from A to B.”

Where should I go on a 10-day safari in Uganda?

“The most popular 10-day Uganda safari itinerary loops from the capital Kampala (or nearby Entebbe International Airport) through the far west. This loop can be covered in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction, neither of which has a strong advantage over the other. However, given that many people are quite stressed about gorilla trekking (how tough will it be and will they definitely see gorillas?), clockwise is possibly preferable as it allows you to do this activity close to the start of your holiday. Following the loop in a clockwise direction, it’s worth spending a night at Lake Mburo NP, which is home to giraffe, zebra and plenty of different types of antelope. Your next stop is almost certain to be at either Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorilla NP, the two places in Uganda that offer gorilla trekking excursions. From here, you can head north to Queen Elizabeth NP, possibly doing a game drive in the Ishasha sector to search for tree-climbing lions, and almost certainly taking a boat out onto the wildlife-rich Kazinga Channel. If you want to track chimps, this can be done in Kalinzu Forest or Kyambura Gorge, both of which border Queen Elizabeth, or further north in Kibale NP. Further north still, Murchison Falls NP is flowed through by the mighty Nile River and offers a great combination of game drives and boat trips. On the drive back to Kampala, a day visit or overnight stop at the excellent Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch is recommended.”

Which animals can I expect to see?

“Although there are no guarantees on any safari, Uganda is one of only two African countries where all the Big Five can be seen alongside gorillas and chimps. In some instances – most obviously gorilla, chimp and rhino – the probability of a sighting is dependent on doing a specific trekking activity in a suitable location. In the case of gorillas and rhinos, the trekking success rate is all but 100%. And while the rate for chimp trekking is slightly lower, a 10-day itinerary should allow an opportunity to try again should you miss out on your first attempt. As for the rest of the Big Five, you’re almost certain to see elephant, buffalo and, to a lesser extent, lion on game drives and boat trips in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls. Paradoxically, while leopards are the most widespread of the Big Five in Uganda, they are also the most elusive, but lucky visitors might encounter one in Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls. Avoid the trap of getting too hung up on the Big Five. Uganda supports a huge variety of other less glamorous wildlife, and a 10-day safari should provide you with opportunities to see giraffe, zebra, warthog, hippo and numerous different antelopes and monkeys. The birdlife is incredible too. A dedicated bird-watcher might tick 300 bird species on a 10-day safari, and casual visitors will be blown away by the conspicuous likes of grey crowned crane, marabou stork and African fish eagle.”

What are the options to extend my 10-day Uganda trip?

“That depends on what you’re looking for. A great add-on for active travelers is rafting the white waters of the Nile upriver of its source near Jinja. If you’re looking for something a bit more chilled, Bunyonyi is a beautiful highland lake lined with low-key budget and mid-range resorts. For a more conventional beach holiday, Uganda’s inland location means that it lacks a coastline, but the lovely Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar, offshore of neighboring Tanzania, is only a short flight away.”

How much will a 10-day Uganda safari cost?

“The typical price of a 10-day budget or mid-range tour in western Uganda is around US$2,500 to US$4,000 per person. This will usually be inclusive of gorilla and chimp trekking permits, other national park fees and activity costs, as well as all accommodation, meals and road transport, and the services of drivers and guides as required. The main variable in the price range will be down to the quality of accommodation, which ranges from simple campsites to smart mid-range hotels, lodges and tented camps. If your safari uses domestic flights, includes a second gorilla trekking excursion, and/or offers accommodation at the top end of the luxury scale, the price is likely to be upwards of US$4,500.”

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits high in the clouds, at an altitude of between 2,227m and 4,127m.

10 days Uganda safari

A 10 day Uganda safari will typically involve gorilla trekking hikes into Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, jungle home to mountain gorillas and 19 gorilla families. This incredible sight and trek will involve bushwhacking through the thick jungle with an experienced local guide to find troops of habituated gorillas.

For the lucky visitors, make sure you have your cameras at the ready as these memories will last a lifetime, all from these ancient rainforests in Bwini NP, one of the few forests in Africa to have flourished throughout the last Ice Age.

The best 10 days Uganda Tours

Price of a 10 days uganda safari.

Prices for a 10 days tour in Uganda range between $3,200 to $3,800 per person. Mid-range tours mostly range between $3,900 to $4,300 per person, while luxury tours start at about $4,500 per person.

Uganda safari packages can vary in price depending on a number of factors. The quality of lodging has a significant impact on a safari’s cost. This will finally divide tours into three categories: cheap, midrange, and premium and of course private tours are often more expensive than shared ones.

This is particularly the case for single travelers and you might wish to think about a fly-in safari on a 10 day journey, although they are significantly more costly than road safaris. Visitors should also take note that low-season costs can also be advantageous, and even if it may rain more during this time, the countryside is at its most beautiful.

Safari essentials and information

Is a 10 day safari in uganda sufficient.

10 days is plenty to see, hear and experience the incredible wildlife and sights of Uganda. The number of days needed to properly do a Uganda safari can range from 1-2 days to 1-2 weeks, depending on how much time and budget a visitor has.

Each day consists of an early morning breakfast before going gorilla and chimpanzee tracking. The activity can last 3 to 4 hours in one forest such as Kalinju forest before later transferring to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park with lunch en-route in Ntungamo or Kabale town.

Evening times typically involve an incredible dinner and wine whilst staying overnight at a luxury lodge such as Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge. The following day can include spending some or all of your time at the incredible Mgahinga Gorilla National Park , a range of freestanding volcanoes that rises to a maximum altitude of 14,787ft on the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Alternatively you can spend all of your time in the famous Bwindi NP. With full days in the jungle, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore this iconic destination including a full morning and afternoon of getting close to these incredible primates with lunch served at one of the scenic picnic spots.

Overall, 10 days is a good amount of time for a mountain gorilla trekking safari in Uganda if it is part of a larger tour, but if not, allocating a few more days to your trek would be ideal if possible.

Accommodation offered on a 10 days Uganda safari?

After a long day surveying the incredible landscape and Uganda wildlife on offer, guests can look forward to the very best safari accommodation Uganda has to offer. The accommodation here is excellent with numerous options from tented camps, luxury lodges to camping grounds.

Chameleon Hill Lodge in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a luxury lodge built overlooking Lake Mutanda. The lodge has a beautiful compound with great views of the three volcanoes and a superb spot for those who have come for gorilla trekking, bird watching, golden monkey tracking or canoeing on Lake Mutanda.

Must do on a 10 day Uganda safari

The most popular option for a 10 days Uganda safari is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park . The airport is about 29 miles from the capital city of Kampala and it’s possible to fly by domestic carrier from Entebbe or Kampala (Kajjansi Airfield) to Kihihi or Kisoro near Bwindi.

Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best place in Uganda to track mountain gorillas. The park protects 40% of the world’s mountain gorilla population and has an incredible 350 species of birds.

A 10 days safari to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is also a great option and home of one habituated gorilla family, the Nyakagezi, which are available for trekking on a daily basis. Trekking of mountain gorillas in Mgahinga gorilla national park takes about 30 minutes to 6 hours and during trekking you will be able to view different wildlife species.

This includes primates such as chimpanzees, black and white colobus monkeys, l’hoest monkeys, different bird species, mammals, plant and tree species among others.

Animals on a Uganda trek?

Gorillas and chimpanzees are of course incredibly popular and visible in Uganda however you’ll find a lot more than these primates here also! Primates are especially well represented in Uganda.

Patas monkey, red-tailed monkey, l’Hoest’s monkey, golden monkey, Ugandan red colobus and Uganda mangabe are some of the special species, many found near Lake Bunyonyi in south-western Uganda.

Uganda is also home to a wide variety of antelope species. The Uganda kob, the national antelope, is locally common, while the rare sitatunga antelope is found in six national parks in the country but rarely seen.

In Bwindi, aside from the endangered mountain gorillas, nine other primate species are found in the forest. These include chimpanzees, olive baboons, black-and-white colobus and l’Hoest’s monkey. Elephants are present but seldom seen.

Uganda’s most popular savannah reserve is Queen Elizabeth National Park and it has four of the Big Five animals present and the widest variety of wildlife of any Ugandan park across grassland savannah, forests, wetlands and lakes.

How much spending money do I need for a 10 day Uganda safari?

Visitors should budget for approximately $300 for a Uganda safari per person per day, including food and accommodation. Uganda safaris can be expensive due to the cost of accommodation and food.

How difficult is a 10 day gorilla trek in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is relatively difficult depending on your fitness levels as the treks involve walking through thick forests, valleys, hills and swamps as well as walking in high altitudes with stinging nettles.

What is the best time to go on a 10 day gorilla trek in Uganda?

The best time to go on a 10 days gorilla trek in Uganda is during its two dry seasons: between December and February, and between June and August, when conditions are particularly good for trekking to see mountain gorillas and chimpanzees.

Comparing the cost of Gorilla Trekking permits in Congo Compared to Uganda and Rwanda;

Gorilla trekking is much cheaper in Congo compared to Uganda and Rwanda. This issue of price difference is basically out of policy differences between these three countries Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda. Rwanda wants to promote itself as a luxury destination while Uganda wants to market itself as an affordable destination. Congo is trying to promote its gorilla tourism to attract more travelers after a long turmoil in the region that caused a lot of insecurity.

Whereas Uganda is promoting itself as the preferred best affordable destination for gorilla trekking among the 3. The experience and duration spent with gorillas is still the same in all the 3 countries? Gorilla trekking in Uganda Compared to Rwanda and Congo

A gorilla permit in Congo costs $400 per person per trek for the high season months of Mid-December to mid-march then June to October and then $200 for the low season months of mid-march to mid-May and then mid-October to mid-December every year. A gorilla permit in Kahuzi Beiga National Park costs $400 for foreign non-residents, $200 for East African residents, and $20 for national residents. Lowland Gorilla trekking permit price in Congo Kahuzi Biega National Park costs USD400 for Non-Residents, East African Residents-USD200, and National Citizens of Congo-USD20

The Gorilla permit in Rwanda Costs $1500 Per person per trek for foreign non-residents, $500 Per person for foreign residents and $200 for East African Citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi and South Sudan), this gives you an opportunity to spend one hour encounter with the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park.

The Gorilla permit in Uganda Costs $800 Per person per trek for foreign non-residents, $700 Per person for residents and Ugx 300,000 for East African Citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, and South Sudan), this gives you an opportunity to spend one-hour encounter with the mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

Best time for booking this 10 Days Combined Rwanda Burundi DR Congo and Uganda Safari

Visiting Burundi, Rwanda Uganda, and Congo at once is possible all year round. The best months to track gorillas include; June to August and December to February since they receive the lowest rainfall and the forest is less slippery. On the other hand, when you happen to travel from March to May and November there are chances of higher rainfall, and you will be able to get discounts from some lodges for your accommodation.

10 Best African Countries for Safari

10 days uganda rwanda safaris

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

Recommended Tours:

Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 mammal species. This includes elephants, hippos, monkeys and so much more. Along with 650 bird species and 5,500 plants. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

10 days uganda rwanda safaris

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late Dian Fossey back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

10 days uganda rwanda safaris

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

10 days uganda rwanda safaris

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

10 days uganda rwanda safaris

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

Recommended Tours:

Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu. It's a safe place where visitors can see 400 different avian species.

Zambia may be a bit far down the list of popular destinations for your African safari, but many consider it to be a destination for diversified and immersive safari experiences, and making a notable feature on our 10 Best African Countries for Safari guide.
