Why This Unique Tour In Rome Was My Favorite Way To Explore The City

R ome has a rich history and vibrant culture that can transport you to a different era. Long before I ever visited Rome, what I knew of the ancient city came from the movies. I’m a classic movie buff, and Roman Holiday , the 1953 romantic comedy, is my favorite film.

The story unfolds as Princess Ann, who, during a visit to Rome, escapes her guardians to explore the city. Enter a handsome newspaper reporter who whisks her away on the back of his Vespa. I’ll never forget the images of iconic landmarks in the eternal city whizzing by as the movie unfolds.

On a recent visit, I found that exploring Rome by Vespa Sidecar Tour can make you feel like you’re living a similar fantasy.

My private Vespa Sidecar Tour was provided by Anantara Palazzo Naiadi as part of a hosted stay at the beautiful hotel. As always, all opinions are my own.

The Vespa Sidecar Tour

The Vespa Sidecar tour offers a unique way to discover the city’s famous landmarks, hidden gems, and picturesque squares. As you motor through the bustling city, you can imagine yourself as Audrey Hepburn’s character, Princess Ann, embarking on her own Roman adventure.

The company’s owner, Luca Di Trapano, explained that the Vespa Sidecar Tour was born in a flash of inspiration after 2 decades of giving tours in Rome. He thought the concept was genius but later learned his idea was 45 years too late.

The makers of the Vespa stopped producing the model equipped with a sidecar in 1968. Not easily deterred, he persevered and brought his dream to reality. Since 2018, Luca has welcomed over 20,000 passengers on board without a single accident. He told me, “It is like having sailed through the streets of Rome with four or five gigantic cruise ships!”

The tours are 3 hours, depending on traffic. The price is 110 euros per person (about $117) on the small group tour (12 guests max). You can take the tour solo as I did or with a companion or group. Trade places halfway through for a new perspective. A private tour’s price depends on the number of guests.

Here are several reasons why you should explore Rome on this unique Vespa tour.

Easy Meeting Point

Piazza della Repubblica is the tour meeting point. The square is well-connected and easy for drop-offs by taxis and vehicles. Take the subway Line A to the Repubblica-Teatro dell’Opera stop. It’s just a 2-minute walk from the Central Termini Railway Station.

Pro Tip: If you want somewhere to stay close by, I recommend Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome Hotel . A restored 19th-century, crescent-shaped palazzo, it fronts Piazza della Repubblica, where the Vespa tour starts. At the assigned time, I met my guide, Alessio, at the concierge desk. My chariot, i.e. baby blue Vespa, was waiting just outside.

The Iconic Landmarks Of Rome

Exploring the highlights of the Eternal City, we visited 12 sights, including the Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo, and the Borghese Gardens. There were several opportunities to stop, stretch our legs, and linger, including the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.

It’s A Blast!

When exploring the beautiful city of Rome, I loved all the astonished looks on people’s faces as we made our way down tight alleys and broad avenues. I felt like a movie star — everyone was smiling, waving, and snapping our photo. We must have been quite a sight; something special to share with family members when you get home.

Avoid The Crowds

What’s the best way to avoid crowds and see a different side of Rome? See it on a Vespa! If you’re fearless, you could rent one yourself. But my advice? Enlist a pro. You will feel much safer riding next to or behind someone who understands the ins and outs of Rome’s streets, where locals think traffic lanes are merely suggestions.

It’s A Beautiful Ride

The Vespa is a classic: These stunning coupes from Italy are iconic on the streets of Rome. Piaggio & Co. started making the Vespa after WWII as cheap, affordable transportation. Eventually, in 1953, the hit movie Roman Holiday showed the world how great a Vespa could be, resulting in record sales. Like the Colosseum, the Italian scooter has remained a part of Italy’s landscape. You will feel like an authentic Italian in the sidecar of a Vespa.

Unique And Unforgettable Way To See The Eternal City

Unlike larger vehicles, a Vespa can easily maneuver through tight spaces, allowing you to see more of the city’s hidden gems and local hotspots. As you zip through the streets, you’ll experience the city in an exciting and unique way. Your guide will share his knowledge of the city’s history and culture, providing insights into the backstories of the pivotal figures in the Roman Empire.

A Driver And Official Guide Rolled Into One

My driver, Alessio, wasn’t just a history buff: He’s also an official guide, which means he’s been trained to lead tours and provide in-depth information on all the sites you’ll see. He knows how to keep you engaged, entertained, and informed, making your Vespa tour an unforgettable experience. Throughout the tour, he shared fascinating facts, historical anecdotes, and his favorite neighborhoods and restaurants. With his expertise and passion for sharing the city’s rich history, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind adventure that you’ll remember for years to come.

Radio-Connected Modern Whispers

As we cruised along the streets of Rome, Alessio provided commentary directly into my ear through a modern whisper system. He pointed out the window overlooking St. Peter’s Square where the Pope makes his Sunday address. It was chilling to see the balcony above the Piazza Venezia, where Mussolini delivered his most famous speech, the declaration of war on France and Britain in 1940.

A Sense Of Freedom And Excitement

Take in Rome’s sights, sounds, and smells from the open-air Vespa sidecar. You can enjoy the warm breeze on your face, witness the daily life of Romans, and immerse yourself in the city’s timeless beauty.

Pro Tip: Three hours is about the right amount of time to get a taste of Rome. I saw much more than I would in a walking tour, and it was a better experience than a hop-on, hop-off bus tour — we could go where large coaches could not.

I Felt Safe

The guides are expert drivers and the top-class helmets have face shields and disposable head covers. The passenger wears a seatbelt with a shoulder harness. We traveled at the most 24 miles per hour; just the right pace. Once you are on board, your unease fades away as you sit back, hold on, and enjoy the thrill of exploring Rome on a Vespa.

The Hidden Gems Of Rome

Rome is one of the most beautiful places in Italy and a real bucket-list destination. But allow some time to visit the hidden gems many tourists miss. Janiculum Hill, called the “Eighth Hill of Rome,” is a beautiful, often overlooked area with the best views of Rome. It’s a bit of a climb on foot, but on a Vespa, sit back and enjoy the ride. Piazzale Garibaldi in the center has the Giuseppe Garibaldi Monument with a cannon that fires daily at noon. Don’t miss the 17th-century Aqua Paola Fountain.

Cappuccino And Cornetto

After visiting the Pantheon, we stopped for a cappuccino and cornetto, the traditional Roman breakfast choice. Our baby blue Vespa was parked nearby and I enjoyed watching how much attention it got from passersby. On the afternoon tours, customers are offered gelato instead.

Unforgettable Experience

This is the perfect gift for someone who has done everything and an unforgettable experience for curious travelers of all ages. You will carry home remarkable moments and fun memories.

Would I recommend Vespa Sidecar Tour? Absolutely. If this had been my first time in Rome, it would have given me a good overview of the places I would like to return to for a deeper dive. I have been to Rome several times, but until now, I’ve never seen the eternal beauty of Rome from the seat of a Vespa sidecar. And the coin I tossed into the Trevi Fountain guarantees I’ll be back.

One Way to Run

David Kwong makes magic again.

A group of runners wearing marathon gear running over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

By Deb Amlen

Jump to: Today’s Theme | Tricky Clues

THURSDAY PUZZLE — David Kwong is a magician , and one of the things I like about his puzzles is that his enigmatist’s sensibilities and knack for illusion inform his crossword themes.

In his last puzzle in The New York Times , Mr. Kwong used elements of a common idiom as a cipher to describe other phrases. When I finally understood what was going on, I sat back and gasped like Mr. Kwong had just pulled a rabbit out of his hat. Not that Mr. Kwong would stoop to such a cliché. I’m not even sure he owns a hat.

Today’s puzzle solved like an exercise in misdirection: While I was busy looking at the grid one way, Mr. Kwong was palming a relevant bit of the theme and hiding it in a not-so-obvious place. It’s a lovely example of the kind of prestidigitation I like to see in his crosswords, and I’m happy that he’s back.

Today’s Theme

Asterisks, which are also called stars when they are included in crossword clues, are a fairly common feature in puzzles. They typically indicate that the clue and its answer are part of the theme.

In Mr. Kwong’s puzzle, the stars mean something else, and solvers must read the revealer at 63A in a different way in order to figure it out.

Can you solve this puzzle without doing so? Probably. Should you? In my opinion, no, because then you’ll miss out on all the fun.

The revealer clue is “Thrice-remade movie … or, when parsed as six words, a hint to the theme clues in this puzzle,” and the answer is A STAR IS BORN. The problem is that, as they are, the theme answers don’t really make much sense in relation to their clues.

For example, at 17A, the answer to the clue “*Allot time” is ELECTION DAY. Granted, we should all allot time to vote, but something about this is not quite right. Back to the revealer.

What if we parsed the movie title from 17A differently, as the clue asked? The only way I can see to make it six words is to write it as A STAR IS “B” OR “N.”

And that, my friends, is the key to the whole theme. We need to swap out those stars for either a B or an N. Using the example above, “*Allot time” would be “Ballot time,” and that makes much more sense as a clue for 17A.

Let’s do a couple more. At 53A, THE CRETAN BULL is clued as “*Ovid of Greek mythology.” Mr. Kwong can’t be talking about Ovid the poet because he was a real person, not a mythological character. But if you place a B where the star is, the clue becomes “Bovid of Greek mythology,” which is a better description of the BULL .

This last one took me a few minutes. At 40A, the clue for RIVIERA is “*Ice is found on it.” Replace the star with an N and the clue reads “Nice is found on it.” (That’s Nice, the city in France, although I’m sure the people on the RIVIERA are perfectly nice.)

Tricky Clues

13A. This measure of inflation does not refer to economics, but to the inflation of a tire: The answer is PSI, or pounds per square inch.

20A. I like the way this clue (“Account that is overdrawn?”) seems to be hinting at a bank account. The account in this puzzle is a SAGA. My guess is that it’s overdrawn because a SAGA is a long and drawn-out story.

5D. Now this is funny. Hands up if you immediately pictured underpants on a person’s head after reading the clue “Bloomers worn around one’s head?” Me too. These “Bloomers” are flowers, and the only three-letter word I can think of that refers to a ring of flowers (“around the head”) is LEI.

24D. I wrote in “rime” and “snow” for “Winter frost” before I realized that the answer was HOAR.

26D. The “Superman portrayer” is Christopher REEVE, not to be mistaken with George Reeves, who played Superman on television from 1952 to 1958.

27D. Mr. Kwong and the puzzle editors must have been absolutely thrilled with this clue, and I don’t blame them. It is so evocative of the kind of person Muhammad ALI was. Just picture them, sitting around a desk with their pencils behind their ears and coming up with this winner: “Athlete with the only vertically mounted marker on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, so his holy name is not walked upon.”

34D. Beware the question mark clue; it can never be taken at face value. This means that “Sightsee?” does not refer to visiting places of interest. It means seeing along the sight of a gun, and the answer is AIM.

61D. If you are in the middle of a “Cross fit?” — two words instead of the one word that refers to an exercise program — you may be in a SNIT.

Constructor Notes

Hello Puzzledom! I’m so excited to be back with another Thursday crossword. This one has been years in the making with lots of fun workshopping with the editorial team. First, I can’t help myself and I’d like to tell you about my original vision for this puzzle. The key theme answer A STAR IS “B” OR “N" was originally intended to create two clues with the same number — a Schrödinger gimmick for the clues, instead of for the answer. “*Ear’s opposite” would have yielded two different clues, both “Bear’s opposite” (bull) and “Near’s opposite” (far). I then proposed there be two clues for each entry in the grid. Fun, right? Nope, can’t do that. Apparently the programming can’t handle such wackiness. On to the next idea. Joel Fagliano, the senior puzzle editor, proposed that I rework the puzzle and focus on the most misleading clues that had a B or N missing. Mislead people? Gladly (I’m a magician)! I had two goals as I set out to do this: To create clues with the most “surface sense,” and to mess with pronunciation. I believe I achieved surface sense with all of them — my favorite being “*Ovid of Greek mythology.” I hope that earns equal gasps and groans. Also, I was dealing with a very, very narrow set of words to play with. Unlike in the puzzle’s original conception, I couldn’t have words that worked for both B and N. So as much as I loved the pronunciation change when *Ike became Nike, I couldn’t use it because of Bike. Last, I had one submitted grid that featured the following theme entry. I’m sorry it didn’t make it! “*Ones on TV can be found here”: THE ENTERPRISE. I hope you enjoyed the puzzle!

EDITORIAL: One-way ticket to bankrupt health care Back to video

In a 3-0 ruling, the court said the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) must pay for the non-binary patient to travel to Texas for specialized surgery unavailable in that province.

In 2022, a patient known as K.S. requested OHIP fund surgery that would provide them with a vagina, without removing their penis. As justification for the claim, the patient said they didn’t want to invalidate their non-binary condition or risk incontinence or sexual dysfunction by removing the penis.

The funding request was rejected by OHIP as the surgery — a vaginoplasty without a penectomy — is not covered on the OHIP schedule.

That seems reasonable. Yes, you have health insurance. No, it doesn’t cover every eventuality. If the procedure you need is not life-threatening and needs to be performed outside Canada, then a sensible compromise is for the individual to find a way to fund it themselves.

Former Saskatchewan premier Tommy Douglas, the father of Canada’s publicly funded health care, never envisaged the all-encompassing system we now have.  His driving motive was that, if a farmer fell from his tractor and broke an arm, he wouldn’t be bankrupted by hospital bills.

Over time, governments have added more procedures and services our health insurance must cover. The system is at a breaking point. Wait times are growing. Emergency rooms are overflowing. According to a recent survey, 6.5 million people in Canada don’t have a family doctor or nurse practitioner they can see regularly.

A health-care system cannot be all things to all people. The system is groaning at the seams, trying to keep the lights on in hospitals and delivering basic services to those who are sick.

No costs have been revealed relating to this surgery. This condition isn’t a life-or-death priority. Covering it sets a precedent that health insurance in Canada will cover any procedure anywhere in the world.

We elect politicians to make decisions about what services this country offers. If judges, who don’t have to balance the budget, overrule those choices, this country will face bankruptcy sooner than we expected.

Amid concerns about kids and guns, some say training is the answer

A father helps his son steady a firearm at the National Rifle Association (NRA) annual convention on May 28, 2022, in Houston, Texas. Exposing children to guns comes with risks, but some firearms enthusiasts say they'd prefer to train kids to use guns responsibly.

Guns now kill more kids than car wrecks, a trend highlighting the growing concern about increased gun suicides and shootings among youth. What to do about it? Keeping guns out of children's hands is one way. Some people take a different approach: train kids to handle guns responsibly.

Jackson Beard, director of training at Securité Gun Club in Woodinville, Wash., teaches introductory classes for kids as young as eight. The class includes the standard gun safety message for kids that the National Rifle Association has preached for decades with its " Eddie the Eagle " cartoons about what kids should do if they find a gun: stop, don't touch, run away and tell a grown up.

But Beard says real gun safety education needs to go further and show kids — with their parents' permission — how to fire a weapon.

"If we don't teach our kids that, who will? And the answer is, no one," he says. "And I would rather raise a responsible generation of gun owners than a generation of gun owners that has never been exposed to the safety message, the respect message, the message of how these guns are to be properly used."

California and Illinois have passed laws in recent years banning gun manufacturers from marketing guns to children. California's law was challenged on First Amendment grounds, but the Illinois law, sponsored by state Senate President Don Harmon, is still in effect.

"We were concerned with the overt marketing of firearms to children," Harmon says. State lawmakers had a collection of example advertisements, including for the JR-15, a child-sized .22 caliber rifle described by some as a scaled down AR-15.

"There's no doubt that this is an attempt to indoctrinate children and create a culture where assault weapons are not just for parents but for the little ones, too," Harmon says.

Harmon's gun marketing law reflects broader concerns over how kids are being introduced to guns. Top of mind is the recent conviction of Jennifer and James Crumbley, in Michigan, who supplied the handgun their son used in a school shooting. The Illinois and California laws inspired some target shooting organizations to post notices on their websites, warning away residents from those states under the age of 18 — similar to warnings against minors visiting websites for cigarettes or alcohol.

Beard says the groups putting up those warnings are "over-lawyered."

"I have to take issue with the [idea] that education is somehow 'marketing firearms to kids.' It demonstrates a misunderstanding or even a irrational fear of firearms as tools," he says.

State laws vary, but it's generally legal for kids to shoot at ranges, as long as a responsible adult is present. And some very wholesome American institutions, including 4-H, have a tradition of promoting shooting for "juniors," as they're often called.

Ashley Hall, coordinator of shooting sports for 4-H in Washington state, says the kids are taught safety first.

"Every single action from picking up a rifle all the way to firing it when they're on the range in kind of very carefully scripted and monitored, and it's like a dance," she says.

Hall is aware of the concerns about kids being fascinated with guns in the wrong way. She says she would never want her program to be "flashy," but it can still be appealing.

"So kids come in, and maybe they've never fired a rifle before, you still see the same physical reactions, the anticipation, all these really intense emotions, right?" she says.

Those intense emotions are something the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants to understand better. The agency is researching how kids in rural areas relate to guns.

"The adolescents we spoke to seemed to understand the rules," says Elizabeth Weybright, an associate professor at Washington State University who is part of that effort.

But she says even though kids know the rules, they admit they don't all follow them.

"I would say the two more unacceptable things that emerged were carrying a handgun for neither self-defense or recreation ... and then carrying to cause harm or intimidate," Weybright says.

Hall of 4-H is helping with the CDC study of kids and guns, and is eager to see what it finds. In the meantime, her philosophy is one of realism.

"The enthusiasm is already there. They're coming to me already interested in this topic," she says. "Firearms, handguns, rifles, hunting, military — all this stuff already exists in this world. And my job is to teach them to be adults in the world that they actually live in — not the one I wish they lived in."

The world's first doggy jet service will cost you $6K for a one-way ticket

oneway tour

Dogs will soon be able to experience their own “ fur st” class flight with the launch of the world’s first jet charter company specifically designed for man’s best friend.

BARK, the dog toy company that coordinates the popular treat subscription BarkBox, is partnering with a jet charter service to take away the challenges of long-distance traveling with dogs, according to a press release. BARK Air, as the company calls it, offers the “white glove experience typical of a human’s first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches.”

Taking dogs on airplanes is, typically, a stressful endeavor with different airlines having different policies for pet travel. For example, American Airlines allows small dogs in a carrier to be placed under the seat in front, but larger dogs are put in the cargo space, which has been found to be stressful for the pet. For United Airlines , pets can fly in the cabin if there’s enough space, but they must fit in a carrier under the seat in front.

“We are excited to take the insights we’ve learned over years to create an experience that is truly dog-first, which is drastically different from just accepting dogs – from the ground to the skies,” said Matt Meeker, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at BARK, in a statement.

However, you’ll need to pay a hefty fee for the dog-friendly flight. For now, a ticket for just one dog and one human will run you at least $6,000 one way.

The first BARK Air flights will take off on May 23, and so far, there are only two flight routes available, both from New York’s Westchester County Airport. From New York to London’s Stansted Airport, it’ll cost $8,000 one-way and to Los Angeles’s Van Nuys Airport will cost $6,000 one-way. Tickets are available for purchase on April 11.

Not only does BARK Air allow dogs, it also focuses on the furry friends by treating them like VIPs, the press release said. BARK Air passengers can skip TSA checkpoints and screenings and instead experience a simple check-in process where they can meet the other dogs on the flight and the humans are served a meal cooked by on-site chefs.

When boarding, a BARK Air concierge is on-hand to ensure the dogs are socializing and adjusting to the environment well.

Each flight will undergo “Dogs Fly First” flight prep that includes “calming pheromones, music, and colors that pups prefer.” To make the flying experience easier and more enjoyable, dogs have access to various aids such as calming treats, noise-canceling ear muffs, and calming jackets.

During takeoff and descent, dogs are given a beverage of their choice to help their ears adjust to cabin pressurization. Of course, there will be plenty of treats on the flight.

Things To Do Horoscopes

Astrology and horoscopes concept. Astrological zodiac signs in circle on starry background.

General Daily Insight for April 21, 2024

Evolving isn’t always easy. As the intuitive Moon harmonizes with transformative Pluto, sensitive emotions may trigger powerful internal changes. When lovely Venus conjoins wounded healer Chiron, attracting love, creativity, and money will be more challenging. We may all notice the need for healing wounds surrounding these subjects — seeking out a financial advisor or counselor could support our journeys. We’ll need it when the confident Sun squares Pluto at 1:02 pm EDT, inviting further upheaval. We must release the past, one way or another.

March 21 – April 19

The way that you relate to others might be changing. Lately, you’ve potentially encountered struggles with relationships of all kinds — to the point where you may wonder if you’re the problem! Remind yourself that no one wins when you play the blame game. In reality, the situation is likely too complex to be a single person’s fault. It’s okay to sit with the issue to try and figure out the best way forward. Like your connection, it should be a two-way street.

April 20 – May 20

Work could be taking its toll on you. Whether you’re employed or not at this time, your to-do list might be bringing on quite the headache in your life. You might feel like your problems are a rigged carnival game — even when you’re sure you’ve hit the target, the reward never comes. Take strength from the knowledge that the universe is bolstering you to conquer this! By approaching your struggles with firm authority, you should be able to ease some of the tension.

May 21 – June 20

Past risks have current lessons to teach you. Certain challenges that you’re going through right now might be due to choices that you made before — and you could be kicking yourself for it. Making mistakes, even big ones, is a natural part of life. Spending excessive amounts of time beating yourself up internally probably won’t do anything aside from keeping you stuck where you are. You can learn to avoid repeating the same mistakes while still giving yourself some grace. Nobody’s perfect!

June 21 – July 22

Emotional shifts could be altering the way others see you. You may have undergone a deep inner transformation that’s inciting changes all throughout your life. Make an effort to master this inner shift — that way you can ensure that it’s going the way that you want it to. It’s dangerously easy to lose control of the reins right now and allow your emotions to run away without your best interests in mind. Make a change that shows your true heart.

July 23 – August 22

The universe is blessing you with insightful personal wisdom. Someone close to you might not be saying everything that’s on their mind. Even so, you can tell that something’s changed in the way that they’re conducting themselves, or in the way that they’re showing up in your connection. This could mean that a deeper conversation needs to be had! Try approaching them in a unique way or in an unusual place to refresh things and get to the bottom of whatever’s not being said.

August 23 – September 22

Consistency may make or break your sense of security. Whether this is a health-related routine, financial habit, or enjoyable rapport with someone in your life, the consistency or inconsistency of that pattern matters. This change could be for better or worse, depending on how you have been showing up and putting in work in your life. To get your ideal results, do your best to put your shoulder to the wheel and stay focused. Keep your head out of the clouds!

September 23 – October 22

Your creativity could support you in solving inner struggles. You might be stuck in a “left brain” mindset, trying to use logic or the advice of others in a way that just keeps leading you to dead ends. Watch out for personal or professional blind spots — you might not even know you’re missing anything! Drawing or writing down your feelings in a journal can align your heart and mind in your search for answers. Let your soul do the steering for a minute.

October 23 – November 21

Emotional healing is nourished by your intuition at present. Sometimes facing your feelings head-on is difficult, but you can still feel them. Consider watching a sad movie to let the tears flow, going for a run with anger fueling your footsteps, or scribbling out frustrations onto paper. By finding a conductor for your emotions, you’re able to let them out in a way that’s positive, rather than bottling them up. Maybe after that, you can identify why you’re feeling what you’re feeling.

Sagittarius

November 22 – December 21

Changes in your community could cause inner shifts as well. Someone who’s been a staple of your community may be moving on at this time, or a stranger might have joined a group that you’re regularly a part of, altering the usual vibe. It’s not always easy to understand how to navigate the different dynamics in the group, but you don’t have to change who you are. You can stay genuine while being kind to those who are transitioning in or out of your life.

December 22 – January 19

Your track record speaks for itself. There may be a promotion that you’re putting in for, or you could be defending yourself against some gossip — either way, your reputation and history are likely to come into play. You’re meant to be honest about who you are! Whether or not others choose to take you at your word is up to them. Your past actions should speak louder than words ever will. Don’t exaggerate or get defensive, just show them who you are.

January 20 – February 18

Your heart has hidden depths — hidden even from you! Something could impact your deepest self without warning, so brace yourself. Whether you hear someone’s heartfelt words, begin a pilgrimage-like journey to somewhere entirely unknown, or take in mind-blowing information from a non-traditional source, this experience should be incredibly valuable. It may answer a question you’d never even thought to ask. Pay attention to the world around you, and don’t be afraid of acknowledging your emotions. It’s a strength, not a weakness.

February 19 – March 20

You’re learning to abandon unnecessary baggage. It may seem easier to hang onto everything and everyone, just in case you need them in the future. In reality, the things and people that you’re clutching close may have begun to wear you down. While it’s understandable to be wary of burning bridges, not everyone deserves a place in your life, and not everything has a place in your home. Clear out the clutter by releasing anyone and anything that isn’t supporting your growth.

More in Things To Do

Today's emotional challenges are plentiful! First, the sensitive Moon opposes communicative Mercury, making it difficult to interpret or express ourselves due to frenzied emotions and confusion. Things don't get any easier as the Moon moves to oppose fractured Chiron, reminding us to heal emotional wounds instead of holding onto them. Yet another challenge arises when the Moon faces off with perfectionist Venus at 7:24 pm EDT, inviting a critical, clingy, and high-strung energy. Let's search for solid ground, then go from there.

Want to see the next total solar eclipse in 2026? An expert recommends booking travel now.

  • 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years.
  • Travelers worldwide will likely head to Spain, Iceland, and Greenland for the event.
  • A hotel expert encouraged travelers to start planning and booking their trips now.

Insider Today

It'll be two decades before the next total solar eclipse hits the US .

Another option: hop on a plane to Europe and turn the 2026 total solar eclipse into a viewing vacation.

Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told Space.com that up to 3.7 million people likely traveled for the solar eclipse on Monday.

HotelPlanner's chief communication officer, Philip Ballard, told Business Insider that the eclipse was a major revenue generator for many cities. For places like Austin, Texas, and Rochester, New York, it could have created $1 billion in revenue, Vox reported.

"I would say the total solar eclipse has become a global phenomenon," Ballard said.

Ballard added that the next solar eclipse , which will pass through Iceland, Greenland, and Spain on August 12, 2026, could result in similar tourism and revenue influxes.

And if travelers are considering a trip to Europe for the solar eclipse, Ballard recommends planning your trip now.

Determine your eclipse viewing destination

According to Space.com , 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Its path will go through Greenland, parts of western Iceland, and northern Spain.

Choosing where to watch the eclipse will be a tough and important decision for travelers.

Iceland and Greenland have some positives. These regions will experience longer totality times, so viewers can watch the eclipse longer. Plus, the sun will be higher in the sky, so finding a spot to watch the eclipse will be less challenging, Space.com reported.

The downside is that these regions are more likely to be cloudy, according to the outlet.

Related stories

While parts of Spain are likely to offer clearer skies, the eclipse's timing will be shorter and closer to the horizon, which means travelers will need to plan and track down a viewing location with unobstructed views of the western horizon, Space.com reported.

Regardless of the destination, according to the outlet, one bonus is that the strongest meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere will happen the following night, so travelers can pack two events into one trip.

Book flights and hotels far in advance

Ballard encouraged people to book their hotels in their destination of choice as far in advance as possible.

"You should start looking now and booking hotels now because those cities in the path are already going to be at peak season," Ballard said.

Ballard said it's similar to when a Super Bowl city is determined or a Taylor Swift tour date is announced — you immediately see spikes in bookings. He predicts hotel occupancy rates will hit near-record highs, and room prices may double around the solar eclipse date.

Ballard's general rule of thumb is to book international travel at least three months in advance, but since this is such an anticipated event, booking earlier is smart. His advice is to start discussing plans with friends and family. If you decide on a destination, book a refundable room to keep your options open if plans change.

Regarding purchasing a plane ticket, a study from Expedia states that international travel's sweet spot is at least six months in advance.

According to Expedia, travelers who book six months in advance save an average of 10% more than travelers booking within two months or less.

Skip the hassle of planning altogether and book a solar eclipse tour

Another option is to let a tour operator do the work for you. A handful of tour companies have seen the increased interest in the solar eclipse and launched tours designed around the event.

These tours will have predetermined locations to view the eclipse, hotel blocks reserved, and itineraries highlighting both the region and the eclipse.

However, these can sell out quickly. For example, Space and Telescope created an 11-day tour of Spain around viewing the 2026 solar eclipse. The tour has already sold out as of Wednesday, and the waitlist is full.

Other operators, such as Wilderness Travel and Eclipse Traveler, have similar itineraries for the total eclipse in 2026.

Watch: A small Australian town was treated to a rare hybrid solar eclipse

Firstly, the sights are outstanding. The Azat Canyon is something special. We've seen lots of mountains all over the world, but this was very new for us. Garni and Gehard are also great and unique places, can't compare it to anything in Europe or any other country. And the guide Hyak did all the best to give us the the key historical highlights, we had really remembered, and the high degree of freedom to enjoy the location by ourselves. Thank you, man!

Earth Day: How one grocery shopper takes steps to avoid ‘pointless plastic’

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Nature wraps bananas and oranges in peels. But in some modern supermarkets, they’re bagged or wrapped in plastic too.

For Judith Enck, that’s the epitome of pointless plastic. The baby food aisle is similarly distressing for her, with its rows and rows of blended fruits, vegetables and meat in single-use pouches that have replaced glass jars.

Less than 10% of plastic is recycled. Most is buried, burned or dumped. Recycling rates for glass, aluminum and cardboard are far higher. And cardboard or paper packaging is biodegradable.

The global theme for Earth Day on Monday is planet vs. plastic. Plastic production continues to ramp up globally and is projected to triple by 2050 if nothing changes. Most of it is made from fossil fuels and chemicals. As the world transitions away from using fossil fuels for electricity and transportation, plastics offer a lifeboat for oil and gas companies as a market that can grow.

The Earth Day environmental movement is calling for  “the end of plastics for the sake of human and planetary health.” People are increasingly breathing, eating and  drinking tiny particles of plastic , though researchers say more work is necessary to determine its effect on human health. Millions of tons of plastic wind up in the ocean each year.

This week, thousands of negotiators and observers representing most of the world’s nations are gathering in Ottawa to  craft a treaty to try to end the rapidly escalating levels of plastic pollution .

Plastic is everywhere in modern society. That’s evident whenever you go grocery shopping, said Enck, a former Environmental Protection Agency regional administrator who now heads up the advocacy group Beyond Plastics. There are things shoppers can do if they want to use less plastic.

On a recent trip to the Honest Weight Food Co-op in Albany, Enck bought almond butter and yogurt in glass containers. She asked that her fish be wrapped in paper and not placed in a plastic bag. She steered clear of bagged carrots and breezed past the lettuce packed in what she calls “plastic coffins.”

She keeps reusable shopping bags in her car, a common practice in New York since  the state banned plastic carryout bags several years ago .

“Even small steps make a difference because big supermarkets notice when people ask for less packaged material. Also, our kids pay attention. If they’re shopping with us and you talk about why you’re reaching for the glass jar rather than the plastic jar, it’s an opportunity for education,” she said.

This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

AP: How do you avoid plastic packaging and products at the grocery store?

I tell everyone you’re not going to be perfect, but do the best you can and focus on things you buy most often. I just could not keep buying those plastic orange juice jugs. So what I did on the juice was, I bought a really nice glass pitcher with a lid on it. And for juices and lemonade, I only buy the frozen concentrate. You avoid the plastic altogether. It takes a little bit of time to melt it and add three cans of water. But most people can manage that.

AP: Many shoppers start in the produce aisle. What are some tips?

I bring reusable cloth produce bags because I don’t want to use those thin plastic bags. So if I need a couple of apples, a couple of avocados, I’ll put them right into my reusable produce bag. I try to buy loose carrots rather than carved carrots in little plastic bags. I will never, ever buy bananas if they’re in a plastic bag, which in my store they usually are not, but I have seen that sometimes. It’s pretty easy to buy loose peppers. I never put broccoli into a plastic bag. You know, you don’t need a lot of those produce bags.

The real dilemma is the fresh berries. Now they do come in number two plastic, which is supposed to be recyclable. I know that Driscoll’s is starting to sell strawberries in a little cardboard box, which I am waiting for.

AP: What do you do when plastic is unavoidable?

For crackers, you can recycle the outside box if it’s cardboard, but then there’s usually a plastic bag inside or a waxy bag that you can’t recycle. But you can use that waxy bag or those little plastic bags if you have pets. I don’t have a pet, but my friends use bread bags and chip bags when they pick up pet poop. So why buy pet poop bags, you can just save those.

I do use regular trash bags. I don’t knock myself out on that. I try not to fill it up. If you can reduce your waste generation, you’re not buying as many bags. I think it’s very important to compost at home if you have the space.

AP: Where have you seen improvement?

The household goods aisle. I am excited about the changes. For detergent you can get concentrates. I only use powder in the dishwasher. I strongly recommend that people avoid the plastic pods. And you can recycle the cardboard boxes from the powdered soaps. You don’t have to get it in plastic. I also think the beverage aisle has some real opportunities for recycling. Better than most other aisles.

AP: What could be done so shoppers have more options?

The nice thing about paper, cardboard, glass and metal is it can be easily made from recycled content. And it actually is recyclable. You can put it in your recycling bin. And if it gets littered, the paper in the cardboard, in particular, doesn’t stick around for centuries.

If we were to pass a strong packaging law to reduce plastic packaging at the state or national level, you would have packaging engineers thinking about what happens after the packaging is used. New York is considering a law right now that would reduce plastic packaging. Unless we adopt new laws, it’s not going to change because the voluntary pledges by companies are falling short across the board. That’s the only way to solve this.
