The best time to visit Savannah is from March to July when warm temperatures coax the tree leaves and azalea blooms out of hibernation. A cache of festivals also fill this high season, though because the weather is ideal, hotel rates may be on the pricey side. Late winter – January and February – is low season, and the drop in temperatures comes with a drop in hotel rates. The Best Time To Visit Savannah For Nice Weather

One of the best things about Savannah is its walkability, so weather is an important factor to consider when planning your trip. For sunny days that aren’t swelteringly hot and humid, April and May are ideal months to visit. The city’s many parks are in bloom, outdoor dining is extra pleasant, and strolling from neighborhood to neighborhood is a joy. You also might be in town for the annual NOGS (“North of Gaston Street”) Tour of Hidden Gardens , which allows you to explore private and historic gardens that are otherwise not open to the public.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah For Lower Prices

Savannah’s off season is January and February, so this is the prime time to score a deal on flights and hotels. While the winter months aren’t as picturesque (you won’t find any azaleas blooming), it’s still not a bad time to enjoy the city. It does get down to the 30s and 40s at night, but daytime temperatures typically range from the late 50s to the upper 60s, which is still quite comfortable if you’re dressed accordingly.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah For Less Crowds

Another time to visit for less money is late July to September. Summer temperatures peak during this window, which scares off some visitors. You can still have a great time if you spend most of your time indoors at museums, shops, and restaurants—all of which are in abundance in Savannah, and more enjoyable with less crowds. Because hotel rates are lower during this time, you can (and should) splurge on one that has a pool.

Savannah is breathtakingly beautiful in the spring, but there is a sweet spot during this season. Between late March and early April, the city is splashed in vivid pink, red, and purple hues as the azaleas come into bloom. It’s the best time to visit Savannah’s historic Bonaventure Cemetery , which is filled with azaleas, as well as the Savannah Botanical Garden . An added bonus for music lovers: It’s also time for the city’s annual music festival, which has an exciting and diverse lineup of musicians from around the world.

Memorial Day weekend is a busy time in Savannah, and for good reason. The weather is gorgeous, and you can hit up the beach on nearby Tybee Island. The city offers plenty of free, family-friendly activities like live performances along River Street overlooking the Savannah River. If you’re lucky enough to score tickets (book them in advance), you can attend a Savannah Bananas baseball game, one of the most fun sporting events in the world.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah In The Fall

This historic city has a spooky side, so plan your visit for October. You can take your pick from several ghost tours, including ones through Bonaventure Cemetery, which takes on a completely different vibe at night. The Savannah Theater , which dates back to 1818, is said to be haunted, and has special programming centered on its ghosts. If you’re looking for something less scary, the Plant Riverside District hosts Oktoberfest events, and the Savannah Philharmonic brings music to area parks. October also brings welcome relief from the summer heat, and it’s a lovely time of year to stroll around and take in the fall decorations on doorsteps and shop windows.

Winter in the Lowcountry usually doesn’t involve snow, but you’ll find plenty of holiday cheer during the month of December. The city has a busy calendar of events, like the Christmas Market at the Plant Riverside District. And if you’re looking for gifts, there are shops filled with treasures, like the Paris Market, Savannah Candy Kitchen, and the City Market. And wandering around can be fun too. Downtown streets are dressed up in twinkling lights and magnolia swags, hotel lobbies are warm and cozy with fireplaces and Christmas trees, and there’s even an annual boat parade of lights on the riverfront.

The historic architecture and palpable charm of Savannah, Georgia, make it one of the most beautiful cities in the South. Live oaks dripping in Spanish moss loom over stately town squares, and a thriving culinary scene draws foodies from around the country. Thanks to its coastal location, Savannah has a consistently mild (if humid) climate, but the weather fluctuations that do exist help dictate its tourist seasons, which are as follows.

Spring brings azalea blooms and the lion's share of tourists, but don't overlook the shoulder season, says Amanda Marks, a Les Clefs d’Or concierge at Thompson Savannah . “I love our fall weather, and recommend coming to Savannah in November before Thanksgiving."

Best Times to Visit Savannah for Smaller Crowds

“In my 20 years living here, I’ve found that Savannah is most crowded in spring (March, April, and May) and fall (September, October, and early November),” Marks says. So if you’re looking to admire Georgian homes or amble down River Street with fewer people around, consider booking your trip in January or February. Marks says that January is the quietest month in terms of travelers, but that some attractions may be closed this time of year, too.

Summer is another less-busy season, though it also brings challenging weather. Temperatures around 90 degrees Fahrenheit are common in July and August, and humidity is usually sky-high, too. If you can tolerate that — or if the main goal for your trip is simply to enjoy the city's delightful (and air-conditioned) restaurants and nearby beaches — a summer visit may be worth considering, since it'll likely reward you with smaller-than-average crowds.

Best Times to Visit Savannah for Good Weather

The best weather in Savannah comes in spring and fall. Temperatures range from the high 50s to the mid-80s from March to June, when trees and flowers — most notably, azaleas — come into bloom and adorn the city with lush hues of green and pink. Prepare for a spring visit by packing layers, including a rain jacket or umbrella. “Nearly every afternoon, at around 3 p.m., it will rain for 30 to 40 minutes,” Marks says. But don’t let a little rain deter you. “Savannah is beautiful during and right after the rain. When the Spanish moss is draped with raindrops, it sparkles in the sun,” she explains. 

If you can’t swing an early spring trip, Perry Lane Hotel staffer and lifelong Savannah resident Mandy Heldreth says to aim for June. You might squeeze in a visit just before the higher temperatures and humidity arrive, which tends to be in July and August.

The autumn portion of Savannah’s shoulder season, from mid-September to mid-November, is another time to find travel-friendly weather. Heldreth says that this is when “the city begins to cool off” again, with daytime temps in the low 70s.

Best Times to Visit Savannah for Lower Prices

Unsurprisingly, the limited demand seen in Savannah’s off-season translates to lower prices on accommodations. “When visiting in the off-season — before President’s Day, during the summer, or from November through the end of the year — more savings can be had," says Marks, "and exploring the city may be more enjoyable and easier to navigate with less foot traffic around." Try visiting at these less-popular times for a deal on the great hotels that showcase Savannah's Southern hospitality.

Off-peak months like January and November can also bring discounted airfare — though there's a chance you can snag a deal on flights at any time of year. Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is served by several budget carriers, including Allegiant , which connects the city to nearly a dozen major and not-so-major airports (Appleton, Wisconsin, anyone?) across the country. Though you'll have to pack light and watch out for hidden fees, these airlines can be a great way to get to Savannah for the lowest price possible.

Best Times to Visit Savannah for Events and Festivals

Like Charleston and other Southern cities, Savannah hosts many events and festivals in the spring and fall, when the weather is at its best. “St. Patrick’s Day is considered a holiday in Savannah,” Marks says, “and while many attractions and tours are closed, we do have a fantastic parade to watch and enjoy.” Music and art are also a large part of local culture — the city is home to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), after all — and spring celebrations include the Savannah Music Festival and the SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival . “The art students gather in Forsyth Park and draw on the sidewalks, creating beautiful masterpieces for everyone to enjoy,” Marks says of the latter. 

In September, Savannah Jazz Festival’s live performances are held at Lucas Theatre, the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, and Forsyth Park over the course of a week. October has its own set of events and festivals, too, including SCAD Savannah Film Festival , Savannah Pride , and the Savannah Greek Festival . Plus, it's a great time to enjoy the city's famous spooky side .

Worst Times to Visit Savannah 

Though it's more affordable and less crowded, summer in Savannah isn't ideal for most travelers, given the sweltering temperatures and oppressive humidity found in July and August. Unless you love heat, it's best to avoid visiting during this stretch. Also on the subject of weather, it's smart to note that hurricane season runs from June to November. Though Savannah isn't as vulnerable to tropical storms as much of the southeast (thanks to the sharp inward curve the coastline takes just north of the city), a direct or indirect hit is always possible — and it may be a risk some travelers would prefer to avoid.

Spring is generally regarded as the best season to visit the city, but if you're more interested in affordability than perfect weather, you may want to bypass the pricey peak period. The off-season months of January and February are some of the most affordable of the year, and though they won't be warm and sunny, they won't be ice-cold either — winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees.

Probably the best time to visit Savannah is spring, with the fall months coming a close second.

Spring is when Savannah blooms, with many of the shrubs and trees in the squares and parks and along its streets flowering around March and April (the precise timing varies year-to-year). The weather too is at its best, and several of the city’s most popular annual events and festivals are held at this time of year.

Fall also offers usually excellent weather, with many days of sun and temperatures that are warm but not excessively hot. This season too offers some of the best of Savannah’s events.

Savannah is a beautiful destination year-round, though, and other times of year each have something to offer: festivals and events, good weather, smaller crowds or lower prices.

How long to visit Savannah for depends on how much you want to see. Many people like to visit for a long weekend, which is enough time to see the best of the Historic District and a few attractions. If you will want to see more of the city and the Georgia and South Carolina coast, plan a longer visit.

Savannah is easily combined with a trip to the equally beautiful Charleston, only around two hours or so north of the city. Several seafront communities are likewise within only an hour or two of Savannah, which make for an especially appealing side trip in the hot summer months.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah For Flowers

Savannah’s beautiful architecture and squares make it a joy to visit at any time of the year. To see the city at its very most visually captivating, though, visit in late March to early April, when the azaleas and other shrubs, and flowering trees such as the dogwood, are at their peak.

If you want to see the classic southern tree, the magnolia, in bloom, aim for later spring through early summer.

Even if you miss the best of Savannah’s flowers, you can still enjoy the appeal and atmosphere of the drapes of Spanish moss that hang from the city’s trees, as the moss is there year-round.

When To Go To Savannah For The Best Weather

Savannah’s subtropical climate produces weather that ranges from mild in the winter, through pleasantly warm in the spring and fall months, to humid and often uncomfortably hot at the height of summer.

For the best weather, visit in spring or fall, when it is warm without being too hot, and rainfall is at its lowest. Savannah is a city best seen on foot, so visiting at either of these times of year will be a more comfortable experience.

Temperatures in spring peak on average in the 70s to 80s. In summer, the average daily maximum temperature tops 90°F, returning to spring temperatures in fall. For most of the year, rainfall is around 3 inches per month, rising to 5-6+ inches in the summer.

Winter brings cooler weather, and the humidity can make it feel quite cold. It is also more likely to be overcast at this time of year, although sunny and warm weather is quite possible.

Freezing temperatures are rare (as is snow), with average daily maximum temperatures in the low 60s and minimum nighttime temperatures averaging around 40°F or higher.

If you especially mind the heat, try to avoid the hottest (and wettest) months, July and August. September too can often be hot and humid.

Hurricane risk is lower in Savannah than other southeastern cities, due to its position relative to the usual storm track, but hurricanes are possible from June through November. Ordinary thunderstorms are frequent in the summer months.

Any of the warmer months, including spring, bring a large number of insects. Repellent is advised, especially if you plan any trips into the surrounding lowcountry.

When To Visit Savannah For The Biggest Events

Most of the larger events held in Savannah are scheduled for the spring and fall months. Some of these events draw enormous numbers out-of-town visitors, and it can be harder to find a place to stay (and eat and park) on the days the festival is held.

In spring, some of the city’s most beautiful historic homes and gardens are opened to the public. The Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens is held around late March, and the North of Gwinnett Street Tour of Hidden Gardens around mid April.

Spring music festivals include the Savannah Music Festival, the largest music festival in Georgia, held over two weeks around late March into April. Also in March is another smaller music festival, the Savannah Stopover.

Each year, Savannah holds one of the biggest St Patrick’s Day parades in the world. Huge numbers of visitors come to Savannah on and around March 17 to enjoy the festivities.

Bigger events are rare in the hot and humid summer, but fall brings cooler temperatures and with them another wave of festivals: the Savannah Jazz Festival in late September Oktoberfest --> and the Savannah Film Festival in October. The Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival, one of the region’s largest seafood festivals, is held in nearby Richmond Hill, GA over several days.

Savannah’s event calendar winds down in winter, but the light displays and decorations of the holiday season around Christmas and New Year’s Eve bring many people to the city. The Black Heritage Festival is held in February, to coincide with Black History Month.

The Cheapest Time To Visit Savannah

Savannah has two main tourist seasons. The biggest is spring and early summer, March through early July. Another peak comes in fall.

The best prices for accommodation can be found in the off-season, which for Savannah is in winter. Although Savannah is becoming a year-round destination, January and February are generally less popular with tourists, and you can expect to be sharing the city with fewer people at this time of year.

The Christmas to New Year period is the exception to the winter lull, when many people like to visit for the lights and holiday festivities.

In Savannah, you might also find better prices in high summer (late July through August), when vacationers are drawn instead to the beaches and sea islands of the coast.

The Best Time To Go To Savannah If You Are Also Visiting Charleston

Charleston is only 100 miles up the coast from Savannah, and many people like to combine visits to the two cities into a single trip.

Charleston’s proximity to Savannah means that it shares most of its climatic characteristics, with the same mild winters and hot, humid summers.

However, although spring is generally considered to be the best time to go to Savannah, in Charleston the fall season (late September through early November) is spring’s equal — and for many, the more agreeable time of year.

You will enjoy both cities in either season, but broadly speaking, if you want Charleston to look its best, go in spring, especially April. If you prefer cultural activities, museums and festivals, choose fall.

If you decide on springtime for your trip to Savannah and Charleston, make Savannah the first stop and Charleston the second, as the plants bloom a little later there.

The Best Time To Visit Savannah As Part Of A Trip To Georgia

Georgia is one of the most popular destination states for people who want to see the South, and you may wish to see other of its attractions as part of your trip to Savannah.

On the whole, the best times to visit Savannah hold true for the rest of the state, but there are a few variations and special factors to consider, depending on which of Georgia’s other regions you want to see.

North Georgia Mountains

The mountains of northern Georgia (5-6 hours drive from Savannah) are one of the most beautiful parts of the state in which to enjoy the outdoors. Georgia as a whole is best avoided around July and August, but if this is when you have to travel, a visit to the mountains offers a cooler and more pleasant respite from the heat and humidity of summer.

North Georgia is also a popular destination for autumn leaf watching, with the region’s state parks the best place from which to enjoy the fall foliage. Georgia’s dominant autumn colors are orange and gold, and they are usually at their peak around late October to early to mid November.

If you do want to visit the mountains, it is best to avoid traveling in winter. Although the rest of Georgia is usually mild and snow-free, ice and snow can both present problems in the most upland parts of the state at this time of year, and you may find many outdoor attractions and trails are closed.

Sea Islands

The main charm of Georgia’s barrier islands, from Tybee down to the Golden Isles of Jekyll and St Simons, is the beach and other outdoor activities. None of the most-visited islands are more than 100 miles from Savannah, with Tybee Island the nearest and easiest to get to.

Spring through fall are the ideal times to visit Georgia’s barrier islands, where the region’s hot summers are made more bearable by cooling ocean breezes and the water itself, which should be warm enough for swimming from May through September.

Atlanta is one of the primary destinations in the South (and the USA) for its cultural attractions and range of things to do. It is around 4 hours or so by car from Savannah, and easily accessible by other modes of transport too.

So far as tourism goes, the high and low seasons in Atlanta are less marked than in Savannah, and in contrast to the summer lull in Savannah’s events calendar, Atlanta’s festivals and outdoor events continue year-round.

Still, spring and fall are the better times to see Atlanta, when the flowers and autumn foliage, respectively, are at their peak and the city is at its best. If you are thinking of visiting in winter, bear in mind that the weather in Atlanta is somewhat colder than Savannah and the coast.

Travelers flock to Savannah , Georgia, to see its picture-perfect scenery – like a time capsule of years past with carefully preserved architecture.

Savannah’s location in the coastal plain region puts it in a subtropical climate, meaning visitors can enjoy mild temperatures nearly year-round. But each season brings its own advantages and drawbacks. Summer is the most popular, but the heat can be overwhelming, and prices are at their highest. The winter, meanwhile, offers discounted rates but fewer things to do in terms of events.

But no matter what time of year you’re drawn to the Hostess City, you’re sure to enjoy yourself. Here's everything you need to know about what each season holds in Savannah.

January to February is the best time for budget travelers

Considered to be Savannah’s low season, the first months of the year are ideal for visitors looking to get the most for their money. Hotel prices can be at their lowest, apart from the dates around the New Year. For those used to cold temperatures, a winter trip to Savannah can be very comfortable, as it never dips well below 40°F.

If you’re looking to travel with your beloved, this is a great time for a weekend getaway as you can get a good deal on a hotel room, which leaves extra cash for a nice dinner and spa treatment. This is also the best time of year for first-time travelers and those looking to see the top sites without the crowds. It’s easy to hop on the trolley or a walking tour.

You also won’t have to face long lines at places you’d typically have to wait for, like Mrs Wilkes Boarding House , a famous family-style restaurant that has been serving up hearty Southern fare since 1943.

March to June is the best for cultural events

Despite the balmy temperatures through these months, it’s also Savannah’s high season due to the abundance of things to do, including some of the city’s most popular annual events, and the influx of spring break travelers. With the azaleas in bloom, photo ops are all around you.

If you want to be one of the many revelers attending the annual St Patrick’s Day festivities, be sure to book your hotel well ahead of time and bring plenty of green to wear! The month of June is an excellent time to check out Savannah’s landmarks focusing on its Black history, like the Pin Point Heritage Museum , the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum , the Savannah African Art Museum and the Beach Institute African-American Cultural Center .

Expect to pay a premium for those hotel rooms, so book well in advance if you can. Making meal reservations is also a good idea, especially if you want a table at bucket-list-worthy establishments like The Grey and Husk . Expect to wait in line at walk-up spots like Leopold’s Ice Cream as well, and eat quickly as your sweets will begin to melt with temperatures ranging between 50 to 70F.

July to mid-September is best for museum-hopping

The other low season in Savannah is the peak of summer, and if you visit during this time, you’ll quickly learn why. The heat and humidity can be overwhelming, especially to the uninitiated, when temperatures reach 90F and above.

But the silver lining is that there are some deals to be had for visitors when it comes to hotel prices. It’s a wise idea to include “hotels with pools” in your search parameters. The Westin Savannah , the Perry Lane Hotel and the Thompson Savannah are all excellent spots to cool off after an afternoon of exploring.

If you plan to hit the beach, get an early start heading to Tybee Island because many others will have the same idea. The water may not be exactly refreshing, but it’s at least better than sweating it out on River Street.

But if the heat gets to be too much for you, seek solace inside Savannah’s museums and cultural attractions. Between the two buildings of the Telfair Museums , you can see hundreds of years’ worth of art, not to mention the dozens of historic house museums. There are also museums curated to specific interests, including the Savannah Children’s Museum and the American Prohibition Museum , with its own speakeasy.

Summer also signals the start of the minor league baseball season. The Savannah Bananas have a very  enthusiastic fanbase , so you’ll want to secure those tickets early! And when you go, be sure to deck yourself out in yellow, just as the locals do.

Mid-September to December is the best for the outdoors

The fall and early winter are Savannah’s best weather periods, though they also bring the rainy season – come prepared with an umbrella in case you get caught in a sudden but brief storm. Summer days are hot and humid, and can see high temperatures around 90 degrees F. Winters are short and mild, with both snowfall and freezing temperatures a rarity. Because the weather in the fall and spring is so great, tourists often come to the city during these seasons. Summers, however, provide a great opportunity to enjoy area beaches and recreational activities, while winter offers a break from crowds and relatively mild weather compared to the rest of the country. Several domestic and international airlines fly in and out of this airport. For people who enjoy riding on trains, Amtrak’s Silver Service/Palmetto stops in Savannah on its way from New York to Miami. Arriving by car is easy because I-95 passes just ten miles west of Savannah; there are several other routes including I-16, U.S. 17 and U.S. 80. Greyhound and Southeastern Stages are two bus companies that have routes from Savannah to other cities in the U.S.

Savannah has a large number of visitor information centers starting with the Visitor Information Center at the airport. This center is located in the baggage claim area. The center provides a large variety of brochures and maps. The MLK Visitor Information Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in the Savannah Historic District is the city’s main visitor information center. Getting Around Savannah - Public Transportation

The Chatham Area Transit (CAT) is a great way to get around Savannah and see all of its interesting attractions. It is a bus system that connects the Historic District in the downtown area with many other places in the greater Savannah area. There are single fares and one day passes that offer unlimited rides all day. The system also offers free shuttles around the downtown area and a free ferry. It is a convenient form of public transportation that is not expensive; it is environmentally friendly; and passengers can sit back and relax, forgetting about the hassles of driving a car including trying to find parking.

When Savannah was founded in 1773, it was laid out in a grid pattern: this makes it easy to walk around the Historic District of the city. This is where most visitors will spend their time. Let’s start with the basics…

Location: Savannah is located along the beautiful Georgia coast in the southeastern portion of the United States.

This area of the U.S. is often referred to as the Deep South, and coastal Georgia is sometimes referred to as the Coastal Empire.

The South Carolina Lowcountry is just across the river, so many travelers combine their visit to Savannah with trips to the Lowcountry .

If you have a full week to travel, it’s popular to split time between Savannah and Charleston.

Size: The current population of Savannah is around 142,000. It’s a city, but it feels much more like a small town!

Historic District: The Historic District is the most popular section of the city, and it’s where most visitors choose to stay.

It’s only 2.031 mi², so it’s very small, flat, and walkable.

When most people picture Savannah, the Historic District is the image they have in mind.

Best Time to Visit Savannah

One of the first things you’ll need to determine when planning your trip is deciding which time of year to visit.

There are pros and cons to each season — except summer. It offers only cons.

Ha… I’m kidding!! (A little.)

Most Popular Season: The most popular season to visit is spring in Savannah .

That’s when the azaleas and jasmine are in full bloom and when the Historic District looks its prettiest.

Allow me to present some photographic evidence…

Most Popular Month: March is the most popular month to visit, with the week surrounding St. Patrick’s Day being the most popular (and the most expensive!) week of the entire year.

That’s because Savannah is home to one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day festivals in the United States!

Savannah’s weather during March is so nice it’s often referred to as “Chamber of Commerce weather”.

Since the weather is also nice in the fall, and because Savannah is known for its extreme spook factor , October is a close second in popularity.

The Holiday Season: If you’re a fan of places that celebrate the holidays like a Hallmark movie special, then you won’t want to miss Christmas in Savannah !

Low Season: The low season occurs in January and February and then again in August and September. You can usually find the best deals in January, February, and August.

Weather in Savannah

Weather is a big factor in determining when to visit. Fortunately, Savannah has nice weather for the majority of the year — except summer.

Are you sensing my disdain for summer weather yet?

Winter : The winter season is rather mild. You might wear a jacket and gloves in the morning, short sleeves during the day, and then need your jacket again once the sun sets.

Average highs are in the mid 60s to low 70s and the lows are typically in the upper 40s. Snow is so rare that it only happens once every five to ten years.

Spring: Spring is incredible in Savannah! Birds chirp, azaleas bloom, and the entire Historic District is abuzz with activity. It’s fantastic walking weather, but a thick yellow pollen covers nearly every surface.

The highs are usually in the mid 70s to low 80s. Lows range from the upper 50s to mid 60s. It rains some, but usually not enough that it would ruin your plans.

Summer: I cannot stress enough how hot and humid it is in Savannah during the summertime.

It’s not hot like Florida, where you get a steady coastal breeze and the warmth of the sun feels good on your skin. It’s hot in a soul-sucking kind of way — where the air feels dead and swampy.

You’ll find yourself thanking sweet baby Jesus every five minutes for the existence of air conditioning and slushy drinks.

Highs range from upper 80s to the low 100s, but the “feels like” temps may hover around 110 (or higher).

Because it’s so humid, it’s common to have mid-afternoon showers during the summer months. The heat and humidity build up until they reach their breaking point, and then the afternoon thunderstorms roll in like clockwork every day around 3 pm.

Fall: Fall is my favorite time of year! Just make note that fall weather doesn’t start in Savannah until late October or early November.

The leaves usually begin to change colors in late November and last throughout December. It’s very common to see trees with fall color in front of homes that have Christmas trees in the windows!

Hurricane Season

The Atlantic hurricane season technically begins in June, but it’s rare for the bigger storms to hit earlier than August.

It’s common for Savannah to fall in the direct path of a major hurricane at least once per year, which results in mandatory evacuations of the city.

Hurricane season in Savannah peaks in September and early October. The season technically ends at the end of November, but it’s rare to have storms that late into the season.

I highly suggest travel insurance for hurricanes to cover potential trip cancellations if you book a trip anywhere from mid-August to mid-October.

If anything above a Category 3 storm rolls through Savannah, city officials usually instate mandatory evacuations.

For example, there are a few times each year when accommodation prices spike due to the crowds. These spikes usually take place during some of the biggest annual events in Savannah .

It’s best to avoid traveling during those times unless you have a specific interest in the associated events.

Sections of Savannah

Step two after deciding which time of year to visit is deciding where to stay. The further in advance you can book your accommodations, the better chance you have at scoring a good deal!

Historic District: As I mentioned in the intro, the Historic District is the most popular section of Savannah. In fact, I highly recommend staying there if your budget allows.

It’s filled with beautiful mansions and is broken up every other block or so with green spaces called squares. You can walk to most attractions, so you won’t need a car.

Some of the most well-known spots in Savannah are located in the Historic District. Those include River Street , Factors Walk , Broughton Street, City Market , and beautiful Jones Street .

Victorian District: The Victorian District is directly south of the Historic District. If you’re looking at a map of Savannah, it falls along the southern half of beautiful Forsyth Park.

As you might deduct from the name, you’ll find a high concentration of Victorian-style homes in the area. Savannah has some incredible Victorian architecture. Here’s more photographic evidence as proof…

Starland District: This artsy section of Savannah is located within a broader area known as the Thomas Square Streetcar District. The Starland District is a smaller subsection of the streetcar district.

It’s popular for its trendy restaurants and hangout spots, as well as its thriving art scene. Starland is where you’re likely to find lots of locals hanging out (as well as Southern Living editors , apparently).

Plant Riverside District: This is one of the newer sections of Savannah — located along the far northwest section of the riverfront.

It’s considered an entertainment zone, and there are plenty of restaurants, shops, and bars in this area. To learn more, check out some of the must-see spots in the Plant Riverside District .

Is Savannah GA Safe?

If I had a dollar every time I was asked this question, I might own a fancy mansion in the Historic District instead of my modest little house in Thomas Square!

I have lots of thoughts on the topic of safety in Savannah , but I think we can agree that it’s important for you to pick a safe place to stay — especially if you opt for a home rental outside the boundaries of the Historic District.

While Savannah looks like a charming small town, in actuality it’s a city and has the level of crime you might expect in any metropolitan zone.

Don’t be fooled by the Historic District’s endearing vibe and think it’s safe to leave your doors unlocked or to go wandering around in unfamiliar areas by yourself late at night. It’s not.

My crime map shows violent crime statistics for the current year in Savannah. The focus is on homicides, stabbings, and gunshots with injuries.

I don’t keep track of all crimes — only the worst of the worst. You can click on each incident on the map to pull up additional details about it.

Overall, if you’re a first-time visitor to Savannah, the Historic District is the ideal place to stay!

It’s generally well-patrolled by the Savannah Police Department. There are very few trouble spots…and those are only bad in the wee hours of the morning when you’ll probably be fast asleep.

Since I haven’t mentioned it yet, I also want to point out that if you haven’t read John Berendt’s book, “ Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil ,” I highly suggest doing so before your trip.

It’s a New York Times Best Seller about the eccentric personality types who tend to choose Savannah as their home.

It also covers the most famous shooting that ever occurred in Savannah, so it’s a true crime “must read.” (Promise me you’ll read the book BEFORE you watch the movie, though. The book is so much better!)

Many of the stories within its pages revolve around the notorious Mercer Williams House . It’s one of a handful of historic homes you can tour in Savannah.

Savannah Weather

The best time to visit Savannah is from March to July when the weather is warm and pleasant and the flowers are in full bloom.   Mid to late summer can bring extreme heat and humidity which can make it unpleasant for some visitors. The winter months of January and February is low season - at this time you will see a drop in the temperatures. The fall from mid-September through mid-November is a good time to visit Savannah when it is uncrowded, yet still seasonably warm.

• January is the coldest month of the year in Savannah and is the peak month of the city’s winter. Average high temperatures reach 60°F (16°C) while the average low temperatures will sink to 39°F (4°C).
• In February, the average temperature increases by a few degrees with the high temperature average at 60°F (16°C) and the low temperature around 39°F (4°C).
• Spring comes to Savannah in March along with warmer temperatures. Average high temperatures hover in the low 70’s Evenings will require a light jacket or sweater and may drop to around 48°F (9°C).
• In April, temperatures creep up further to an average high of 78°F (25°C). During this month, many of the spring foliage and flowers are at their best, making this month one of the best to enjoy Savannah’s gardens and arboretums. Low temperatures reach 54°F (12°C).
• May is when the summer-like weather returns with the average high temperature jumping to 85°F (29°C), while the average low temperature is a comfortable 62°F (17°C).
• Summer heat is in full swing in June with average highs reaching 90°F (32°C). Low temperatures average at 70°F (21°C).
• July is the hottest month in Savannah with day time highs peaking into the low 90s.  Lows only drop to the mid 70s at night.  Summers can als bring intense humidity so plan for shady activiites or visits to Tybee Island beach. 
• August brings continued heat, but also quite a bit of rainfall.   Precipitation averages 7 inches (167 mm) for the month with average day time highs still in the low 90s.  
• Savannah slips into autumn in September with more comfortable temperatures and less humidity.   Visitors can expect day time highs in the mid 80s and lows in the upper 60s. 
• October brings cooler temperatures with the average high dropping to 78°F (26°C) and the evening lows hovering in the upper 50s°F (14°C).
• November is driest and coolest month with the average day time high in the upper 40s to low 50s.  Bring a jacket and warm sweaters if visiting Savannah during Thanksgiving.
• Savannah is December brings temperatures that hover in the low 60s during the day with  average lows sink to 41°F (5°C).

Sightseeing in general is best during March through May and September through November when the climate is not too hot and not too cold. To enjoy the best of Savannah’s festival season, plan your trip around the month of March, but book your vacation rental well in-advance, as high season books up fast!

Tybee Island Weather

Visitors to Tybee Island, Georgia can expect a pleasant climate!  The warm spring and summer days are refreshingly offset by the cool breezes rolling in from the Atlantic Ocean. During the fall and winter months, visitors can plan on enjoying mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine.

On average, the warmest month is July with highs well into the 90s

On average, the coolest month is January.

The most precipitation on average occurs in August.

3. Enjoy a beach day on Tybee Island.

Tybee Island, one of the best beach towns in the South , is about 20 minutes from downtown Savannah. Brandon Carter, executive chef and owner of Savannah restaurant Common Thread (more on it later) loves this easy excursion himself. “The drive out is great to help you decompress. Tybee has beach town vibes and great little shops. Don’t forget to hit Sea Wolf for strong drinks and tasty hot dogs,” he says. 

4. Browse the shelves at E Shaver Booksellers.

You don’t need to be an avid reader to appreciate the charm of E Shaver Booksellers, an iconic bookstore on Bull Street. If you are a bibliophile, you’ll surely leave with a new novel or two in hand — and don’t forget to wave goodbye to the store’s several cats as you exit. 

5. Load up on sweet treats at Back In The Day Bakery.

A midday pick-me-up is always a good idea, especially if you’re exploring the city by foot. Back in the Day Bakery , owned by Cheryl and Griffith Day, is just the ticket. A wildflower honey bun or a blueberry muffin will keep hunger at bay.

The Jepson Center for the Arts is the third structure, a modern one built in 2006 and home to an art collection that stretches from the 19th century to today. The best part? In a coastal city like Savannah, it’s no surprise that the seafood is wildly good. “There’s a walk-up fried fish place called Shabazz [with] a real sense of place. My order: fried whiting, fries, Shabazz juice, and a slice of 'Yusuf's World Famous Pie.' I love that place,” chef Carter said.

Walking tours are a great way to get to know this destination. Patt Gunn, founder of Underground Tours of Savannah , often leads 90-minute historical treks in town, highlighting the journey of enslaved Africans brought to Savannah and sold in Johnson Square — an important part of the city’s past.

Named by Bon Appétit as one of the best new restaurants in 2022, Common Thread is an “ingredient and seasonally inspired restaurant concept” inside of a restored two-story home built in the 19th century. Chef Carter helms this beloved place, and his dynamic menu changes based on produce availability, but you can never go wrong with the oysters to start. For other meals nearby, Chef Carter recommends having a “light and flavorful” lunch at Wildflower Cafe on Telfair Square and a nightcap at Lone Wolf Lounge .

16. Stretch your legs in Bonaventure Cemetery.

Three miles from downtown is Bonaventure Cemetery , an azalea-filled resting place known for its role in John Berendt’s 1994 book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” Osbourne’s pro-tip for visiting the 100-plus acres? “Bring bug spray.”

17. Cool off with some ice cream at Leopold’s.

Heavy rain, strong winds expected in Savannah Thursday but sunshine on way for weekend

Coastal Georgia is expected to escape the severe weather moving across the Deep South Wednesday, but a cold front will bring waves of rain and blustery conditions along with the potential for thunderstorms in the Savannah area. 

As much as 1.5 inches of rain is possible in Savannah and surrounding areas, the National Weather Service’s Charleston office said Wednesday. Sustained winds in the 18-24 mph range are expected, with gusts reaching 34 mph. 

The heaviest periods of rain are likely between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., although thunderstorms are possible from 8 a.m. through 7 p.m., NWS said. 

There is a slight risk that some of those storms could be severe. 

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-70s Thursday before falling into the upper-50s as skies clear overnight.

A pleasant weekend is in store for the Savannah area. Sunny skies are in the forecast Friday through Sunday. NWS is calling for high temperatures of 75 on Friday, 77 on Saturday and 80 on Sunday. 

The warming trend is expected to continue into next week as highs approach the mid-80s Monday and Tuesday with more sunshine. 

The normal high for Savannah in mid-April is in the upper-70s.

When and How to Spot the ‘Devil Comet’

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is one of the brightest known periodic comets . It earned the nickname of “devil comet” in 2023 when an outburst caused the comet to have an asymmetrical appearance, like having horns. It comes around every 71 years and is currently getting brighter as it flies toward the Sun.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the comet is best viewed with binoculars or a small telescope – right after the Sun dips below the horizon, look West just beneath the Moon, and just right of Jupiter. An hour after sunset, the comet drops so low, it will be difficult to see without a perfectly clear view of the horizon. The comet then sets an hour later.

Bill Cooke, who leads the Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, encourages viewers to have more realistic expectations about what they might see. “Many images depict a bright comet with a long green tail,” Cooke said. “That’s not going to happen.”

By July, it will be too dim to view even with binoculars.

As for viewing this comet with the naked eye, it might be possible in the coming days, but by mid-April, it will be too close to the Sun and then growing fainter as it makes its way away from the Sun.

The brightest stars are a magnitude 1, the faintest are a magnitude 6. Comet 12P will peak around a magnitude 5 unless an outburst occurs.

However, Cooke warns that outbursts are unpredictable. “There have been minor outbursts roughly once a month but it’s impossible to predict them,” he said. “The last one was on Leap Day, Feb. 29.”

Will the comet be visible during the eclipse ?

It is certainly a possibility. If Comet 12P remains around a magnitude 5, it would only be visible in binoculars during the few minutes of totality. Consider enjoying the main spectacle instead of using that time to locate Comet 12P and attempt to view it at another time.
