Who is Sumit Nagal, the Indian tennis star making history in Monte Carlo?

India is a country rich in tennis history and Sumit Nagal could become the latest trailblazer from the nation to make a significant mark in the sporting world.

Following on from the likes of Vijay Amritraj, Leander Paes, and Sania Mirza, Nagal is the latest player from the world’s most populous country to represent his nation on the global stage.

But who is Nagal, who is set to take on top 10 star Holger Rune in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters?

Early years

Born in Jhajjar, Haryana, in August 1997, Nagal’s father, Suresh, is a schoolteacher while his mother, Krishna Devi, is a homemaker.

First picking up a racket at the age of eight, the 26-year-old showed huge potential from a young age and just two years after he first started playing the sport, he was invited to play in an academy run by Indian tennis legend Mahesh Bhupathi.

Nagal was based in Bengaluru from 2008 to 2010 as part of Bhupathi’s academy, but, when the academy shut down, he moved to Toronto to pursue his tennis dreams.

Junior success.

Having been coached by Bobby Mahal in Canada, Nagal’s career began to take off while still a junior in 2015.

Early Futures titles came in India in the opening stages of that year, but it was on the Grand Slam stage that he first attracted major attention.

That same year, alongside Vietnamese partner Lý Hoàng Nam, he claimed the boys’ doubles crown at Wimbledon, becoming only the sixth Indian to win a junior Grand Slam title.

He followed that up with more singles and doubles success at Futures level, before making his India Davis Cup debut in 2016.

Challenger stalwart

Nagal has been a fixture on the Challenger Tour for the best part of a decade, not until recently able to consistently breakthrough onto the ATP Tour, but proving a formidable opponent on the ATP Challenger circuit.

After winning nine Futures-level titles, Nagal beat Britain’s Jay Clarke to win his first Challenger-level tournament in Bangalore in November 2017.

He has won five Challenger titles, with a strong surge in recent months; three of his five titles have come since the start of 2023, including in Chennai this season, while he’s reached a further two finals.

US Open and Olympic milestones

A significant step came at the US Open in 2019, where he came through qualifying to reach a first Slam main draw, impressing in a four-set loss to all-time great Roger Federer.

And, receiving direct entry in the covid-lockdown tournament 12 months later, he won a Slam match for the first time, beating Bradley Klahn before losing to eventual champion Dominic Thiem.

The following two years were largely injury disrupted but he was handed a spot at the Tokyo Olympics, where he became the first Indian man since 1996 to win a singles match, seeing off Denis Istomin.

2024: Recent rise, Monte Carlo history

Nagal qualified for the Australian Open for the second time in his career in January and, in stunning 31st seed Alexander Bublik, became the first Indian man in 35 years to beat a seeded player at a Grand Slam.

That run, alongside Challenger victory in Chennai, saw him finally crack the top 100 in the ATP Rankings, having been ranked as low as 506th the previous year due to injury.

And his momentum has continued in Monte Carlo this week, coming from qualifying to become the first Indian in 42 years to reach the main draw.

Then, by beating Matteo Arnaldi 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in Monday’s opening round, he became the first Indian in history to win a Masters 1000 match on clay.

He faces an uphill task against 2023 runner-up Rune next, but India’s next star looks to be well and truly upon us.

Zendaya serves tenniscore chic during 'Challengers' press tour: See all her winning looks

It's game, set, match for the actress, 27, as she promotes her new film..

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Zendaya has aces up her sleeve during the Challengers press tour.

The actress has been globe-trotting to promote the film, in theaters on April 26, and once again , her style takes center stage. Guided by longtime stylist Law Roach , Zendaya’s serving tenniscore at its finest, down to woven wool felt balls on her shoes. Think: lots of whites, a bounce of yellow-green hues and shimmering silvers.

It’s on point, of course. The Dune: Part Two and Euphoria star, 27, plays a former tennis prodigy turned coach in a love triangle with two tennis pros, played by Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist. The film is directed by Luca Guadagnino.

Rome premiere

Zendaya wore all white everything, centering around a custom Calvin Klein skirt suit — which touched the floor and featured a high leg slit — for the April 8 event. Under the blazer was nothing but a diamond serpent necklace. She also wore diamond earrings, rings and a snake ring. (All the jewelry for the press tour is courtesy of Bulgari, as she's a brand ambassador .) On her feet? Louboutins.

Rome photo-call

Zendaya served up a dress modeled on what a pro might wear — with pleats on the bottom — but it was a shimmery silver with a deep dipping V-neck. Completing the custom Loewe outfit was a true pièce de résistance: white pumps with tennis balls pierced by the heels.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Law Roach (@luxurylaw)

Paris premiere

On April 6, Zendaya floated onto the red carpet in custom Louis Vuitton — a white strapless fitted bodice with a flowing chiffon skirt. The look was accessorized with a leather belt and, yes, more diamonds.

Paris photo-call

For an April 6 photo-call, Zendaya bounced in wearing tennis ball green ( or is it yellow? ): a shirt — that was mostly unbuttoned — and pants set from Louis Vuitton by Marc Jacobs’s 1999 spring collection. She toted a purse of the same hard-to-pull-off hue, along with strappy silver platform stilettos.

The fashion trifecta in the City of Light was capped off with another Louis Vuitton by Marc Jacobs look, from 2013. It’s a green-and-white checkered coat hitting the thigh — with white pumps. Zendaya also wore a white headband with a bow.

Sydney premiere

Zendaya tipped us off to her style game plan, wearing a different custom Loewe dress on March 26 as the press tour kicked off Down Under. That one was a playful sparkling green, with a generous leg slit, featuring a tennis racket and ball design. The shoes were the same color, and the diamond earrings were triple-tiered.

Fashion inspiration

In the May issue of Vogue , Zendaya said she takes a page from Beyoncé when it comes to being a fashionista on the red carpet and during photoshoots, creating her own style-slaying alter ego.

“She’s a different being that comes into me — my own Sasha Fierce,” she said. “She takes over and she does the carpet.” It’s something she mentally commits to, saying, “I have to buy her. I have to buy that this woman exists, or that this fantasy exists.”

Roach — who has long elevated Zendaya’s fashion game — told the outlet after Zendaya’s head-turning Dune: Part Two tour that, similar to character acting, “We adopted method dressing. The looks served as an extension of the wardrobe from the movie; it was intentional and purposeful.”

While there is no shortage of reactions to everything Zendaya’s serving up on the carpet, “We never work based on what we think somebody's reaction is going to be,” Roach said. “I always try to be a storyteller more than anything else.”

Fred Couples Again Sounds Off on LIV Golf: 'I Don't Think I'll Ever Understand It'

The 1992 Masters champion wasn't a fan of the PGA Tour being disparaged but acknowledges the Saudi-backed league's stable of talented players.

  • Author: Bob Harig

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Fred Couples has made it clear previously that he’s no fan of the LIV Golf League . He’s taken some shots at the format and been critical of some of the players but mostly takes issue with any disparaging of the PGA Tour.

Couples acknowledges the strong play of several LIV Golf players and was asked again Tuesday about his feelings toward the league.

“I don’t think I'll ever understand it,’’ he said. “Maybe I'll go to one and see what it's really, really like. I know how great they are as players. I get it all, and I get the 54 holes and you drive a cart to your tee and shotgun. That's easy to pick on.

“Sometimes I've picked on comments that people have made, and I've picked on comments that they talk about the Tour, which I've said I have now 44 years invested in, and I don't want anyone picking on a tour that I think is very good.

“Now, everything can get better, but let me tell you, if the LIV Tour is better for golf, I'm missing something there. But again, I'm not here to bash them anymore. I'm going to see them all tonight (the seven Masters champions who play for LIV Golf who were to attend the annual Champions Dinner).

“Do I like coming to this tournament? I love it. Do I like five days before it seeing the people standing there saying we're coming after the green jacket? I mean, when I was 35 I was coming off the green jacket, too.”

Couples took issue with a LIV Golf promo last week in Miami where the 13 Masters participants said they were coming after the green jacket. “I mean, everyone at this tournament—you don’t think Ludvig Aberg wants to win the green jacket? Or (Tyrrell) Hatton?

“But I find it funny, and I find their golf very, very good. I love DJ (Dustin Johnson). I love Brooks (Koepka). I don't know if they even comment on the LIV Tour. They just play golf. So please don't tell me the LIV Tour is as good as the PGA Tour. I don't want to hear it.”

Sergio Garcia believes it’s all a media creation. The 2017 champion said as much when asked Tuesday—even though he’s had his own issues, including a spat with Rory McIlroy that was later resolved.

“I mean, you guys love these things,” Garcia said. “You keep building up these things, and there's nothing. There's nothing.

“You guys love to kind of dig and just kind of try to make it sound like we get in the locker room and we're fighting each other and stuff like that. It's not like that. At the end of the day, it's golf. We're all trying to play the best way we can, and that's it.”
