Stephen Ames opens and closes with eagles, wins Boeing Classic for 4th Champions victory of year

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. (AP) — Stephen Ames opened and closed with eagles Sunday in a runaway victory in the Boeing Classic, his fourth PGA Tour Champions win of the season.

The 59-year-old naturalized Canadian citizen from Trinidad shot a 9-under 63 at Snoqualmie Ridge for a seven-stroke victory over defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez.

“Just kind of freewheeling it a little bit,” Ames said after playing the final five holes in 6 under. “I hit the shots that I needed to hit coming down the end and everything just clicked.”

Ames matched the tournament record at 19-under 297 after opening with consecutive 67s to take a one-stroke lead into the final round.

Jimenez, also 59, closed with a 69.

K.J. Choi (65) and Steven Alker (71) tied for third at 10 under. Bernhard Langer had a 69 to tie for fifth at 8 under with Stuart Appleby (65) and Keith Horne (66).

Ames started fast Sunday with the eagle on the par-5 first, added a birdie on No. 6 and reeled off four straight on Nos. 14-17 before capping the victory with a 4-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th.

Ames has six career senior victories, also winning the Trophy Hassan II in February, the Mitsubishi Electric Classic in May and the Principal Charity Classic in June. Steve Stricker leads the tour with five victories this season.

Local favorite Fred Couples shot a 73 to tie for 26th at 3 under. The 63-year-old former Masters champion grew up playing public golf courses in the Seattle area.

Boo Weekley tied for 66th in his Champions debut, shooting 75-73-78.

Q. Pacific Northwest, are we keeping it at home here? You’re a resident of

STEPHEN AMES: No, I’m not a resident, no. Resident somewhere else.

Q. Last one I’ve got, the fourth win of the season, how much success do you give to

your swing coach for your --

STEPHEN AMES: Oh, he’s -- it’s not the swing coach, it’s part of the whole team. It’s Allen,

my psychologist, Harry here, my trainer who works with Jon Rahm and Jerry Kelly. After

2020 with the COVID, you know, I injured myself and it was like, you know what, I need to

get back in shape. So I called Harry and Harry says let’s get the shoulder going. From there,

being very regimented with my working out. I would say that was probably the biggest thing

right there in the fact of being able to be very clear, very free-minded when I’m playing. That

helps big time.

Q. And with that close, the 19 under ties the tournament record.

STEPHEN AMES: Oh, shit, really?

STEPHEN AMES: And I told Alker to stand in my line. Good thing I made the putt then. OK,

well, that’s good. I do have a record, I didn’t know.

Austin Eckroat gets his 1st PGA Tour win by prevailing at Cognizant Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Austin Eckroat waited a long time to become a winner on the PGA Tour. Another day didn’t hurt.

Eckroat got the first victory of his tour career Monday, topping Erik van Rooyen and Min Woo Lee by three shots to win the weather-delayed Cognizant Classic. Among his prizes: $1.62 million — by far his biggest golf payday — along with tour status for two years and a trip to the Masters for the first time.

Eckroat shot a final round of 4-under 67, finishing at 17-under 267.

He said he was nervous Monday. He hid it well, never giving up the lead.

“This has always been my dream to win on the PGA Tour,” Eckroat told Golf Channel. “And just to win, I haven’t won since 2019 — it was a college event. It’s just been so long. I’m just so happy.”

He left PGA National on Sunday night when darkness stopped play with a one-stroke lead and was never caught. Back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th holes protected his lead, and a 12-footer for birdie on the par-4 16th pushed the edge out to three shots.

“I just kept telling myself, ‘I’ve put myself in this position for a reason,’” Eckroat said. “This is what I want to do.”

Eckroat laid up on the par-5 18th to protect his lead and take water out of play, knowing all he had to do was avoid disaster to finish off his first tour win in 50 career starts. He made an easy par, sealing the win.

“I was just really happy I was able to perform in the situation,” Eckroat said.

Van Rooyen had his round of 8-under 63 on Sunday to finish at 14 under. Cameron Young (66), K.H. Lee (66), Shane Lowry (71), David Skinns (71) and Jake Knapp (66) all ended their rounds on Monday, all wrapping up at 13 under. K.H. Lee made three birdies in the five holes he played Monday.

But nobody caught Eckroat, a 25-year-old who was a star at Oklahoma State before turning pro.

His most memorable tour moment, before Monday, likely was last year in the final round of the U.S. Open to become the sixth player in that tournament’s history to post a nine-hole score of 29. Eckroat shot a 5-under 65 and finished in a tie for 10th at 3 under — ensuring he’d play in this year’s U.S. Open.

The season’s first major awaits him now as well. He’s going to Augusta National next month, with stops at Bay Hill and The Players along the way to Magnolia Lane.

“The adversity of sleeping mid-round, I’m just really happy with how I handled it,” said Eckroat, who became the fourth first-time winner in nine tour events this season, joining Nick Dunlap, Matthieu Pavon and Knapp.

For Knapp, last week’s winner in Mexico, he’s now had three top-five finishes in his 10 career PGA Tour starts. His earnings are up to about $2.5 million.

“I was happy with how I managed everything this week,” Knapp told Golf Channel.

The Monday finish was needed after a thunderstorm dumped nearly 2 inches of rain and brought lightning to the area Sunday afternoon, causing a 3½-hour delay in the final round. Of the 68 players who made the cut, 42 finished on Sunday — so 26 returned on Monday to play somewhere between one and 13 holes.

It was a quick day for Billy Horschel. He couldn’t get to the 18th tee before the horn blew to stop play on Sunday night, meaning he had to come back and play the par-5 finishing hole on Monday. He had a 9-footer for birdie, settled for par and was done in 15 minutes.

Horschel — who vaulted into the mix with six consecutive birdies on Sunday afternoon — finished at 12 under. He ended up tied for ninth, along with Keith Mitchell, Peter Malnati, Alex Noren, Andrew Novak, Kevin Yu and Martin Laird.

Villanova vs. Creighton odds, score prediction: 2024 college basketball picks, March 9 bets from proven model

Sportsline's model just revealed its ncaa basketball picks for the creighton bluejays vs. villanova wildcats on saturday.

eric-dixon-villanova-usatsi.jpg

Villanova finds itself in a must-win situation heading into its regular-season finale against No. 10 Creighton on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats (17-13, 10-9 Big East) are coming off a loss at Seton Hall and find themselves squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Creighton (22-8, 13-6) has won six of its last seven games, including an 89-75 win over then-No. 5 Marquette last Saturday. The Bluejays lost to Villanova at home in overtime in the first meeting between these teams this season.

Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Wells Fargo Center. Creighton is favored by 1 point in the latest Villanova vs. Creighton odds, while the over/under is 137 points, per SportsLine consensus. Before entering any Creighton vs. Villanova picks, you'll want to see the NCAA Basketball predictions from the model at SportsLine.

The model simulates every Division I college basketball game 10,000 times. It enters Week 18 of the 2023-24 season on a 141-100 roll on all top-rated college basketball picks dating back to last season, returning more than $1,700 for $100 players. It is also off to a sizzling 26-17 start on top-rated spread picks this season. Anyone following has seen huge returns.

The model has set its sights on Creighton vs. Villanova . You can head to SportsLine to see its picks. Here are several college basketball betting lines for the game:

  • Villanova vs. Creighton spread: Creighton -1
  • Villanova vs. Creighton over/under: 137 points
  • Villanova vs. Creighton money line: Villanova -105, Creighton -115
  • Villanova vs. Creighton picks: See picks here

Why Villanova can cover

Villanova lost five straight games down the stretch of January, but it has won six of its nine games since then to give itself a chance to make the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats are coming off a loss at Seton Hall on Wednesday, but they can boost their resume in this matchup. They have already picked up one win over Creighton, as Eric Dixon hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 28 seconds remaining in overtime to help spring the upset as 10-point road underdogs in December.

Dixon, a senior forward, leads Villanova with 16.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, while senior guard TJ Bamba (10.4) and senior guard Justin Moore (10.0) are both in double figures as well. The Wildcats are one of the most experienced teams in college basketball, giving them an advantage in a must-win home game. They have covered the spread in six of their last seven home games, and they are 8-1 in their last nine home games against Creighton.

Why Creighton can cover

Creighton has been one of the hottest teams in the Big East since the beginning of February, going 6-1 in its last seven games to move into second place in the conference standings. The Bluejays are tied with Marquette after beating the Golden Eagles at home last weekend. Senior guard Baylor Scheierman had 26 points, 16 rebounds and four assists, shooting 6 of 12 from 3-point range.

Junior guard Trey Alexander posted a double-double as well, finishing with 18 points, 11 assists and four rebounds. The Bluejays have four double-digit scorers and still have plenty to play for as they try to improve their NCAA Tournament seeding with a quality road win. They have covered the spread at a 12-2 clip in their last 14 games in March. See which team to pick here.

How to make Villanova vs. Creighton picks

The model has simulated Creighton vs. Villanova 10,000 times and the results are in. The model is leaning Over, and it's also generated a point-spread pick that is hitting in well over 50% of simulations. You can only see the pick at SportsLine.

So who wins Villanova vs. Creighton, and which side of the spread hits well over 50% of the time?  Visit SportsLine now to find out which side of the spread you need to jump on, all from the model that is on a 141-100 roll on its top-ranked college basketball picks , and find out.

Rory mcilroy wants more ‘cutthroat’ pga tour with fewer competitors.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Rory McIlroy is in favor of tightening the circle of the PGA Tour.

McIlroy addressed the matter on Friday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Florida’s Bay Hill Club in response to a question about if how he felt about the smaller field at the tournament.

“No, I mean, I’m all for making it more cutthroat, more competitive,’’ McIlroy said, as covered by Sports Illustrated . “Probably won’t be very popular for saying this but I’m all for less players and less Tour cards, and the best of the best.’’

Rory McIlroy said Friday that he would be in favor of more "cutthroat" PGA Tour tournaments, meaning ones with smaller fields.

It’s an interesting time for McIlroy to make these remarks, as long shots have been winning left and right on the PGA Tour in recent months.

In nine PGA Tour events in 2024, six of the winners entered the tournament with odds of at least 100-to-1 at the Las Vegas SuperBook.

Chris Kirk kicked things off, winning The Sentry at 200-to-1.

Then, Grayson Murray won the Sony Open as an astounding 400-to-1 shot.

This was followed by Nick Dunlap winning The American Express with 300-to-1 odds.

Matthieu Pavon and Nick Taylor both had 125-to-1 odds when they won the Farmers Insurance Open and the Waste Management Phoenix Open, respectively.

Finally, Austin Eckroat had 100-to-1 odds before he won the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beaches Garden, Fla.

The shortest odds of anyone who has won a PGA Tour event this year was Jake Knapp, who won the Mexico Open at Vidanta Vallarta after entering with 40-to-1 odds.

Rory McIlroy (left) is second in the World Golf Ranking, behind Scottie Scheffler (right).

How many of these winners wouldn’t have even been a part of the field under McIlroy’s parameters?

Part of this phenomenon is that so many big-name golfers, including Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau have left the PGA Tour for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf.

However, the stars remaining on the PGA Tour, such as McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler, have not won tournaments yet this year.

David Toms says senior golfers were pleasantly surprised by Mission Hills in Galleri Classic

pga senior tour boeing classic

When David Toms and the rest of the PGA Tour Champions players returned to the Coachella Valley last year after a three-decade absence to play in the inaugural Galleri Classic, Toms, for one, was pleasantly surprised by the course they played.

“To me it was more of an old-style Palm Springs golf course, meaning like a Tamarisk or a La Quinta Country Club, when you compare it to the Stadium golf course or any of the PGA West golf courses, Classic Club, stuff like that, kind of the new desert golf courses,” Toms said of the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage. “It was just kind of an old tree-lined, here it is, right in front of you, keep the ball in play and try to make putts.”

That Toms was surprised by the Shore Course shows that while the course was the home of an LPGA major championship for 51 years, the course wasn’t terribly well known outside of the LPGA. That Toms was able to master the course for three days to win the inaugural Galleri Classic at 16-under 200 for a four-shot victory showed how well Toms was playing at the time.

Toms will defend that title at Mission Hills on March 29-31 as 78 senior golfers play for a $2.2 million purse.  The tournament has also announced Spotlight 29 Casino as its presenting sponsor and its exclusive casino partner, effective immediately and through the 2026 tournament.

“We had a couple of days where the wind got up at times, but I think it is an exciting golf course,” Toms said in returning to the course this week for the media day for the PGA Tour Champions event. “Some of us had seen some of the holes on television and the women were playing.

“Obviously we knew about the 18th hole (the par-5 closing hole with an island green), which is an interesting golf hole compared to the rest of the golf holes,” Tom added. “Because you’ve got so much water on every shot. Basically a lot of the other holes you don’t have any water at all. So it was a little bit different than the rest of the golf course. But for the most part, everything was straight forward and the guys really enjoyed that.”

Toms’ victory at Mission Hills, his second on the PGA Tour Champions on the young 2023 season, showed that the now 57-year-old Toms still has fight in him after 13 PGA Tour wins and four PGA Tour Champions victories. That was something Toms talked about when he won the Galleri Classic and still talks about now.

Getting the game in shape

“When you are able to win and the fields are good, you know that your best golf stacks up well,” he said. “The problem is getting to your best golf on a more consistent basis. A lot of that has to do with preparations, it has to do with priorities, it has to do with family situations, your schedule. And then when you are playing well and doing everything well, are you actually playing in a golf tournament?”

For Toms,’ the start of a new PGA Tour Champions season – the Cologuard Classic in Tucson this week will be his third start of the year – comes as golf itself is in chaotic times because of the fracture between the PGA Tour and the LIV Tour. That might not have much to do with the senior players, but Toms says he’s interested for a good reason.

“The main thing that we want to know out here on our tour is what is the health of the PGA Tour,” Toms added. “How healthy is this organization that watches over our retirement plans and our sport in general, and then our product. (The PGA Tour) supports our tour. The things we are doing now. How healthy is the host organization.”

While Toms and other senior players aren’t part of the poaching of players from one tour to the other, Toms notes that when Phil Mickelson turned 50 he gave a jolt to the senior tour and even helped the seniors garner their biggest television ratings in a few weeks when Mickelson won on the 50-and-over circuit. Toms hopes a bigger jolt might come from Tiger Woods in a few years, but for now, Toms isn’t a fan of what he’s seeing on the regular tour.

“We are in a weird and bad spot, because I think you start taking away from the competition,” Toms said. "Everyone wants to talk about money. It gets to be like some of these other sports where this guy, everybody loves this baseball player and he’s the main guy on your franchise and all of a sudden he’s a free agent and he goes and signs for all this money for another team and he abandons you.”

What does “on Caesars” mean? For those learning how to bet on sports , it means Caesars Sportsbook watches your back on your first bet as long as it’s at least $10 and covers up to $1,000. If your first bet wins, you’re wealthier and don’t need anybody’s aid. But if your first bet falls short of the cup, Caesars Sportsbook jumps in and returns your first bet to your account as one bet credit, up to a maximum of $1,000. With Caesars Sportsbook abiding by a 1X playthrough requirement, your bet credit from one of the best Cognizant Classic betting promos must win just once to enable you to pocket the profit in cash.

Fanatics Sportsbook Promo for Cognizant Classic Betting

Fanatics Sportsbook, one of the country’s fastest-growing online sportsbooks and one of the best Cognizant Classic betting promos, has created a unique welcome offer that’s all yours once you launch an account with the Fanatics Sportsbook promo . You can capture up to $1,000 in bonus bets in a 10-day period.

Here’s how this works: On Day 1, you can make a first bet up to $100 on the Cognizant Classic or any other sport. Whatever amount you choose to bet, that’s the amount of the bonus bet Fanatics Sportsbook will send to you. Your qualifying bet must be on odds of -200 or longer. You’re eligible to repeat this process each of the next nine days. Therefore, if you max out your first bet at $100 each day, you’ll collect a total of $1,000 in bonus bets.

Each bonus bet hits your account within 72 hours of your opening wager settling. Once it gets there, you receive seven days to use it. Any time one of your bonus bets wins from one of the best Cognizant Classic betting promos, you win the profit in cash.

DraftKings Promo Code for Cognizant Classic Betting

DraftKings has built its reputation as one of the best online sportsbooks in part due to its popular No Sweat First Bet, but DraftKings’ current offer takes things a step further. When you register for a new account with the DraftKings promo code , you’ll get a No Sweat First Bet up to $1,000 along with Same Game Parlay Insurance on any sport. That’s what makes it one of the best Cognizant Classic betting promos.

When it comes to the No Sweat First Bet, your first bet will be covered if it settles as a loss, from $5 to $1,000. If it wins, you’re rich. If it loses, DraftKings makes it up to you by sending the amount of your first bet back to your account as a Bonus Bet Token. You get seven days to play that token and it only needs to win once for you to cash in.

With the All-Sport SGP Insurance, you’ll have a Parlay Insurance Token you can use while creating a Same Game Parlay (SGP). If you win every leg of the parlay but one, then DraftKings sends you a bonus bet that equals the amount of your parlay wager.

While this is the national offer, for those bettors awaiting the release of the DraftKings North Carolina promo code , be patient. When it is released, it likely will deliver a “Bet & Get” offer as that is what the operator typically does in new state launches.

Our suggestion for your opening wager: Make your $5 first bet a moneyline wager on a college basketball game that should be lopsided. We recommend that you bet on Xavier to defend its homecourt Wednesday night against a DePaul team that owns a 3-24 record and has lost 15 games in a row.

Once your $5 first bet wins, your $150 bonus will hit your account within 72 hours as site credit. You’ll have seven days to play your bonus bets and FanDuel permits you to split that $150 into as many bonus bets as you want to make. Each time a bonus bet wins, the profit becomes yours in cash.
