A visit to the Guinness Storehouse is one of the most popular things to do in Dublin and it’s the most-visited of the many paid tourist attractions in Ireland .

Located at St James’s Gate, the Guinness Factory sits on the site where Arthur Guinness set up shop with a 9,000-year lease in 1759.

There are several different Guinness Brewery tours to head off on, and we’ll take you through the best of the bunch in this guide.

You’ll also get some handy visitor info (e.g. try and visit late afternoon!) along with the history of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin and more. Dive on in!

Some quick need-to-knows before you visit the Guinness Storehouse

Although the Guinness tour is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

The Guinness factory is located slightly off Dublin’s south quays here . It’s a 15-minute walk from St. Patrick’s Cathedral , a 20-minute walk from Kilmainham Gaol and  very  short walk from some of the best whiskey distilleries in Dublin .

2. Book online to avoid the queues

So, you can just rock up and buy tickets for the Guinness tour on the day, but you’ll likely have to queue (the queues here are often very long). So, it’s worth buying your Guinness tour tickets online in advance. More on this below.

3. Opening Hours

The Guinness factory opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10 am-5 pm, Saturday, 9:30 am-6 pm, and Sundays from 9:30 am to 5 pm. If you book your Guinness tour tickets online, you’ll need to pick a specific time.

So, there’s some very limited free parking at the Guinness Storehouse on Crane Street, ( see it here  on Google Maps). There’s paid parking near the Four Courts here (15-minute walk away).

5. Part of the Dublin Pass

Exploring Dublin over 1 or 2 days? If you buy a Dublin Pass for €70 you can save from €23.50 to €62.50 on Dublin’s top attractions, like the EPIC Museum, the Guinness Storehouse, The GPO, the Jameson Distillery Bow St. and more (info here ).

The History of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin

When you visit the Guinness Brewery in Dublin, you’re treading on hallowed ground! It was the original site where Arthur Guinness began his brewery business in 1759.

Planning for the future, he signed a 9,000-year lease at £45 per annum and started brewing his dark porter-style ales. He used dark malt to create his stout, which was instantly a favourite with river and street porters, among other local workers.

Then things escalated

Ten years later, he decided to begin exporting, shipping a modest 6.5 barrels to England, and the rest, as they say, is history. By 1886, Guinness sales reached 1.13 million barrels a year, and the company was floated on the stock market.

That was in spite of the fact that Guinness owned no bars or pubs and refused to advertise (this changed drastically over time). The product spoke for itself.

The decline and joining up with Diageo

In the 1970s, Guinness sales had declined, so the owners had to relaunch it and introduce pale malt. The company merged with Diageo in 1997 but retained the Guinness brand’s rights and trademarked the Irish harp logo.

The different Guinness Storehouse tours

As I mentioned before, we’ve done the Guinness Storehouse tour several times over the years. They come in the guided (during ‘normal’ times) and self-guided form.

Having done both, I can’t recommend the guided tour of the Guinness Storehouse enough. The tour guides are brilliant, and you’ll just have a more enjoyable experience.

1. Guinness Storehouse Experience (€30)

This is arguably the most popular Guinness Factory tour, as it involves polishing off your visit with a pint in the Gravity Bar.

This self-guided tour (affiliate link) costs €30 and it should take you around 1.5 hours from start to finish, depending on how long you linger. Here’s what it involves:

• A Guinness (18 +) or a soft drink in the Gravity Bar
• You get to ramble around the Guinness Brewery
• Experience Canvas D8; a summer programme of culture and art
• A guaranteed timed entrance

2. Guinness Storehouse Experience + Guinness Academy (€38)

This tour includes everything in the storehouse experience, with the one incredible addition of learning how to pour your own pint in the Guinness Academy. 

This version of the Guinness Factory tour costs €38 and, with the addition of the Guinness Academy, is pretty similar to the first tour. It includes:

• Tuition in the Guinness Academy where you will learn to pour a pint

3. The Jameson + Guinness tour combo (€97)

Now, the final tour (affiliate link) will suit those of you that plan on also visiting the Jameson Distillery on Bow St .

This is a combo, skip-the-line ticket that includes both attractions. It starts around €97 , and it includes the best of both tours. Here’s what you get:

• Timed skip-the-line entrance to the Jameson Distillery

• 2 drinks (pint of Guinness + 1 Jameson)

You’ll often see the Guinness Factory mentioned in guides to the best museums in Dublin . This puzzles some, but it is a museum of sorts.

The Storehouse is home to fixtures from the Guinness Brewery’s original days. Interestingly enough, some of these are from over 250 years ago.

Things to do at the Guinness Factory in Dublin

Tour aside, there are plenty of other things to do at the Guinness Storehouse that’ll make your visit an enjoyable one.

From tasting and learning to your face on a pint (yes, your face  on  a pint) and more, there’s a little bit of something to tickle every fancy.

1. The Tasting Experience

Moseying around the Guinness Storehouse and learning lots of interesting facts about this Irish brew is thirsty work. The Tasting Experience is a hands-on multi-sensory journey introducing visitors to this unique stout.

Pause and smell the aromas emanating from the creamy head (just like wine tasting, really!) and then sip the velvety smooth brew. Deeeeee-licious!

2. The Guinness Academy

There’s a definite art to pouring the perfect pint, and the Guinness Academy is the place to learn it for yourself.

Get behind the bar and follow instructions from the Beer Specialist on hand, who will give you some useful tips. You’ll be able to tell a bad pint of Guinness from a good one from then on!

3. The STOUTie

Within the STOUTie Room walls, guests can purchase a second glass of Guinness and see their own Selfie smiling up from the creamy head.

It’s a unique moment combining the latest technology with a little extra malt extract for a picture-perfect pint!

4. Enjoy a Pint at the Gravity Bar

The Gravity Bar is one of the most unique rooftop bars in Dublin and it’s the perfect place to linger over a pint or try one of the experimental brews.

Places to visit nearby after the Guinness Factory tour

One of the beauties of the Guinness tour is that, when you’re finished, you’re a short distance away from some of the best places to visit in Dublin .

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from the Guinness Storehouse (plus places to eat and where to grab a post-adventure pint!).

1. Whiskey distilleries (3 to 6-minute walk)

If the Guinness tour has you thirsty for more alcohol activities, you’re in luck – some of the top whiskey distilleries in Ireland are a short walk away. Roe and Co (6-minute walk), Pearse Lyons (5-minute walk) and the Teeling distillery (15-minute walk) are all nearby.

2. Dublin’s Oldest pub (10-minute walk)

Very much the reigning champion of ancient pubs in Dublin , and by some distance! Just a 10-minute walk from the Guinness Factory and Proudly boasting on a scroll of painted parchment on the pub’s whitewashed walls that it dates back to 1198, the Brazen Head is Dublin’s oldest pub and is also one of its most popular. 3. Phoenix Park (15-minute walk)

Dominated by the 200ft tall Wellington Monument, Phoenix Park is an enormous space and one of the largest enclosed public parks in any capital city in Europe (the Wellington Monument is also the largest obelisk in Europe!). Make the 15-minute stroll across the Liffey and up Wolfe Tone Quay to explore its vast expanse. It’s also home to Dublin Zoo and Áras an Uachtaráin .

4. Kilmainham Gaol (20-minute walk)

Infamous for being the site of incarceration for many Nationalist leaders, Kilmainham Gaol has played a hugely significant and symbolic part in Irish history and the prison is well worth a visit. Lying a 20-minute walk west of Roe and Co, former inmates include Charles Stewart Parnell, Patrick Pearse and Eamon de Valera.

Distance between Guinness Storehouse and Jameson Distillery: 2 km (1.25 miles)

Time Taken: 10 minutes by Car

This trip is a 4-hour fully guided tour – first to Jameson Whiskey Distillery and then to Guinness Storehouse.

The tour starts at 1.45 pm from outside Jameson Whiskey Distillery’s entrance. 

At Jameson’s, you taste different whiskeys and learn about the three ingredients that go into making the world’s most famous Irish whiskey. 

After the tasting is over, you get your Whiskey Taster Certificate and head towards the Guinness Storehouse for the second leg of your tour.

How to reach Guinness storehouse

Guinness Storehouse is in an old fermentation plant in the heart of St James’s Gate Brewery.

Guinness Storehouse entrance

The main entrance of the Guinness Storehouse is on Market Street. 

All visitors – individuals, groups, wheelchairs, and pushchairs must use this entrance. 

Walking to Storehouse

If you are in Dublin City Center, we recommend you walk the distance of 2.5 km (1.5 Miles) to Guinness Storehouse. 

The 30-minute walk is lovely and will also take you over River Liffey. 

Buses take ten minutes from Dublin City Center to reach the Guinness Storehouse. 

You can board Bus No 123 from either  Upper O’Connell Street  or Dame Street . 

Buses run at a frequency of 8-10 minutes. 

You must get down at  James Street (Stop 1940) , from where the Guinness Storehouse entry is only 500 meters (one-third of a Mile), just a six-minute walk away.

Luas is the tram/light rail system in Dublin, Ireland.

If a Tram is your preferred mode of transport, you must board the Luas Red Line and get down at  James’s Luas Stop .

Once you get down, you must walk 1 Km (.6 Miles) to reach the attraction.

The walk usually takes 15 odd minutes. 

Put on Googe Maps to navigate to the Guinness Storehouse.

If you plan to travel by car, you can use the free parking available on Crane Street. 

It is a three-minute walk from the attraction. 

Since the slots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, you may want to start early in the day. 

A limited number of wheelchair-accessible parking spaces are also available. 

If you don’t get a spot at the free parking garage, check out these paid parking lots –  Q-Park Four Courts ,  St. Augustine Street Car Park , and  Q-Park Christchurch . 

The Guinness Storehouse opens at 10 am and closes at 5 pm on weekdays.

On Saturday, the Storehouse opens from 9.30 am to 5 pm, while on Sunday, it is open till 6 pm.

For two months a year – July and August – Guinness Storehouse stays open till 8 pm. 

The last entry is one hour before closure. 

The Guinness Storehouse remains closed from 24 to 26 December every year.

The Guinness Storehouse tour is self-guided and lasts approximately 90 minutes. 

After their tour, visitors are encouraged to stay on for as long as they want and enjoy stunning views of Dublin from Gravity Bar. 

Since this is a relatively short tour, some tourists combine it with either the  Jameson Whiskey Experience  or the  Big Bus Hop-on Hop-off Tour .

If you want to avoid the crowd and enjoy the experience at lower noise levels, the best time to visit Guinness Storehouse is between 9.30 am to 12 noon on weekdays. 

From noon onwards, long lines start forming at the ticket counter, and the exhibits inside also get crowded.

This is why we recommend buying tickets online , much in advance. 

The peak tourist season for Guinness Storehouse is from May to September. 

The Guinness Storehouse’s 90-minute tour is a real bang-for-buck experience if you love beer, food, or history.

Having said that, even non-drinkers are known to say that their visit to Guinness Storehouse was totally worth it.

• There are few places where you can learn how to store, serve, and taste a pint of Guinness. More importantly, the tour ends in the Gravity Bar, the best place in the world to have a pint of Guinness.
• You also get 360° views across Dublin’s magnificent skyline from the Gravity bar. 

Guinness Storehouse tour

Beverage connoisseurs and lovers of food-themed experiences enjoy the self-guided Guinness Storehouse tour.

In 2019, the Guinness StoreHouse had 1.7 Million visitors. 

Tourists go through the seven floors of pure fun and then sit down at the Gravity Bar and take in the views of the city.

An official guide takes you through the first three floors – about Guinness history, the Guinness family, the brewing process, and the advertising floor. 

This Guinness Tour also has audio guides in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Mandarin, which you can rent for two Euros each (from the ground floor).

For hearing-impaired visitors, a visual guide is available in international sign language.

All Guinness Storehouse entry tickets come with a 24-hour cancellation guarantee – that is, you can cancel 24 before your visit date for a full refund. 

Every tour ticket also comes with a complimentary pint, which you can redeem at the Guinness Academy on the fourth floor, Arthurs’ Bar on the fifth floor, or the Gravity Bar on the seventh floor.

Guinness Storehouse is a child-friendly tourist attraction and even has room for prams and buggies. 

However, an adult must always accompany kids below the age of eighteen. 

Needless to say, kids below 18 won’t be able to drink or purchase a drink.

However, they can redeem their Guinness Storehouse ticket for a free soft drink. 

Guinness ‘Behind The Scenes’ tour This newly launched Guinness Brewery Tour is a ‘Behind the Gates’ 3-hour Guinness experience. The tickets are 95 Euros per person, and during the 3-hour walking tour, you access the Storehouse, the Roast House, Brewhouse 4, the underground passenger tunnel, etc. 

This Guinness building has seven floors.

Visitors start their Guinness Storehouse tour on the ground floor of the building and end it on the seventh level. 

The sixth floor of the building is used for administrative purposes, and thus, there is nothing much for the visitors to see. 

Ground Floor

The Ground Floor has two parts – the Guinness Retail Store and an exhibit called ‘Our Brewing Story.’

1. Guinness Retail Store 

Guinness Flagship Retail Store is the most extensive collection of Guinness memorabilia and exclusive merchandise in the world. 

Some visitors pick up personalized engraved glasses at the Store. 

2. Our Brewing Story

In this section, visitors learn about the history of Guinness, what it takes to brew the beer, and the extraordinary lengths the company goes to make it the world’s number-one stout.

First Floor

The first floor of the building has three sections covering the founder, Arthur Guinness, the Master Coopers, and a themed Cafe.

1. The Arthur Guinness Story

This section narrates the story of Arthur Guinness, who was so confident about his brew that besides stamping his family name on it, he leased out St. James’s Gate area, where his brewery stood at £45 per year for 9,000 years. 

And that’s no typo!

2. Cooperage & Transport

Tip: A Cooper is a person who makes wooden casks, barrels, vats, buckets, tubs, troughs, etc. 

This section is about the role played by Master Coopers, who hand-made the wooden barrels in which Guinness got transported all over the world. 

The barrels used to be stacked so high that the pilots could spot them from their planes, earning them the nickname ‘Dublin Pyramids.’ 

3. The Cooperage cafe

Cooperage Cafe is a humble tribute to the barrels and the art of barrel making. 

If you wish, you can stop here to recharge yourself or stop at the 5th-floor restaurants. 

Second Floor – The Tasting Experience

This is the floor where you get into a multi-sensory tasting journey to understand the distinctive flavors of Guinness’s iconic beer.

First, you awaken your senses, then smell the distinct aromas, and finally taste the velvet-smooth sip to the very last drop.

Third Floor – World of Advertising

On the third floor, you enter Guinness’s World of Advertising and experience eighty years of groundbreaking print, digital, and TV campaigns.

In this section, you can also take a snap of yourself and imprint it on your beer pint.

They proudly call it the STOUTie.

Fourth Floor

The fourth floor of the Guinness Storehouse has two activities – the Guinness Academy and the Connoisseur Experience. 

1. Guinness Academy

At the Guinness Academy, visitors learn to pour the perfect pint of Guinness and then drink it, too. 

After learning the six-step ritual, you get a Guinness certification.

2. Connoisseur Experience

If you like VIP experiences, you must opt for the Connoisseur Experience, where you get a private bar to yourself. 

And a personal guide takes you through the flavors during the tasting experience. 

Fifth Floor – Restaurants

Three of the Guinness Storehouse restaurants – Brewers’ Dining Hall, 1837 Bar & Brasserie, and Arthur’s Bar are on the fifth floor of the building. 

1. Brewers’ Dining Hall

The look, feel, and dishes at this restaurant take inspiration from the 18th and 19th-century dining rooms in the vicinity of the brewery.

Brewers’ Dining Hall features an open kitchen and offers iconic Guinness dishes and traditional Irish food. 

2. 1837 Bar & Brasserie

It was in 1837 that Guinness and oysters hit the headlines for the first time as a pair that went together rather well.

And that is why the Guinness Storehour tour finishes here even as you sip a pint of the black stuff while watching Dublin’s magnificent skyline.

I’m not a fan of Guinness, but I loved discovering the history of the drink and company. The whole experience is very impressive and unique, and you can explore and discover at your own pace. We stopped for food in the restaurant, and I enjoyed the Guinness burger. I highly recommend it. 

Being able to pour our own Guinness was great fun, as was understanding the techniques and details behind the design of the glass.

Great and valuable 90 minutes

This tour was fantastic! Even though it is self-guided, there is accommodation for many languages, and the pace of the walking tour is perfect. 

The intermittent need for ushers to move the visitors was not oppressive but necessary.

Sat in a cozy local pub, the incessant buzz of Irish-accented voices swirling around you, traditional music flows from a live band in the corner. In front of you is a pint of Guinness, looking like the absolute meal in a glass it is. The perfect line of white foam contrasting the almost black liquid underneath as you’ve waited patiently for it to settle. This is the simplest, yet possibly most enjoyable way to experience Ireland . But first, let’s take it back to where the nation’s favorite beer started – with a Guinness Storehouse tour in Dublin. It’s almost a crime to skip this national treasure location, even if you don’t like beer.

Where is the Guinness Storehouse

Since the company began in 1759, the Guinness Brewery has stood at St. James’s Gate in Dublin, Ireland. The huge wooden gates bearing the familiar harp symbol on one of the world’s most famous brews is unmistakable. While the actual storehouse building is a lot newer, this part of the city has an unbelievable amount of history with beer.

Book any city bus tour and you can all but guarantee that one of the stops will be at the world famous gate. Which makes it really easy to make a Guinness Storehouse tour part of your day . In fact, on of my favorite European travel tips is to take advantage of these city bus tours.

From Dublin’s busy and popular Temple Bar area, it’s about a 25-minute walk to the Guinness Storehouse. Or you can take a taxi if you want to save your legs. I chose to walk on my visit as it was a lovely day out – and I got to see a lot more places along the way.

How to get Guinness Storehouse tour tickets

As one of the most popular experiences in Dublin, an already busy and popular city, you’ll want to book ahead to avoid disappointment. I booked my Guinness Storehouse tour a week before I visited.

When you book, either directly through the Guinness Storehouse website, or a ticket seller such as GetYourGuide , you’ll have to select a time slot. So while you might still see availability closer to the date, getting time you want may not always be possible. Earlier in the day is likely to have better availability.

If your time in Dublin is limited, and in any way around a weekend, plan ahead as best you can .

Pricing starts at around €26 but can be more for busier times like afternoon or weekends. Expect to see some variance on pricing depending on when you choose.

TOP TRAVEL TIP: The Guinness Storehouse is fully accessible with escalators and elevators throughout. That means anyone with mobility concerns or in a wheelchair won’t miss out on any of this magical experience.

How long will you spend?

The Guinness Storehouse tour took a lot longer than I expected. I honestly thought I would be in there an hour, see a bit of the brewing process, maybe a couple of museum-like exhibits and then top it off with a quick pint. I was wrong.

Yes, all the above is part of the experience, but you will get so immersed in it all that you’ll spend way longer than planned. From understanding all the stages of making Guinness, to learning the history of those who made it what it is today. Then of course there are tastings. And between all that is floor after floor of exhibits and artifacts from Guinness-making past.

The Guinness Storehouse tour will take you up through 7 floors in total. And the last one is the Gravity Bar with its incredible views out over Dublin. If there’s the perfect place to have a pint in Dublin, this is it .

All in all I would suggest allowing yourself around 2 hours to visit the Guinness Storehouse. You can likely do it in 90-minutes if you’re powering through, but you won’t be savoring that pint, and you won’t be allowing yourself time in the gargantuan gift shop.

What if I don’t like beer?

It’s not beer, it’s a meal in a glass. The lifeblood of Ireland. If you’re ever going to try Guinness, this is the place to do it.

I didn’t think I liked Guinness, having taken the odd sip over the years and deciding it wasn’t for me. But I did say that if I ever get a pint of Guinness I’m going to wait until I’m in Ireland. That’s exactly what I did, and I was pleasantly surprised .

Even if you don’t like beer, or stout, or whatever you want to call it, this place is iconic. We all know the advertisements with the toucan and all other fun commercials they have had over the years. The part of the Guinness Storehouse tour detailing the advertising was one of my favorite areas to explore.

The Guinness Storehouse is a history lesson, museum and factory all in one. Children are welcome here – although they won’t get a pint of Guinness at the end. So it’s not just about adults drinking beer, it’s a great place to learn more about Dublin and Ireland too.

The Guinness Storehouse tour

I’ve taken part in brewery tours before. They’re usually a quick run through of the behind the scenes, and last maybe 20 minutes to half an hour. They typically end in the tasting room with a sample or two of whatever you’ve seen being made. The Guinness Storehouse tour blew any of these previous tours out of the water.

The entrance to the Guinness Storehouse tour is an Instagrammer’s dream with a replica St James’s Gate set up and decorated for you to take your photo in front of .

Proceeding to the exhibit, the first words you see are written on the black and white tiled floor. They state that “The essence of Guinness is all around you”.

WHAT IS GUINNESS MADE FROM?

There are four ingredients in Guinness: Water, barley, hops and yeast. The first floor of the Storehouse tour takes you through what each one of them does in the beer making process.

The four ingredients are displayed in a way that makes you feel like you’re really in the beer-making process, not just reading about it . Grab a handful of barley, smell the hops, run your hands through the cascading water.

THE GUINNESS FAMILY

You will be introduced to the history of the Guinness Family, dating back to the O.G. Arthur Guinness. Could this really be the most loved man in Irish history?

In an interesting part of the museum, find out how the brewing of this now famous beer began. And what led up to the signing of a 9000-year lease for the brewery. Now that’s a commitment.

BREWING GUINNESS ALL DAY EVERY DAY

The magic of Guinness might start with four simple ingredients, but it is brought together with the brewing process. This part of the Guinness Storehouse tour focuses on the incredible 11-steps it takes to get these ingredients to your pint glass .

Find out the magical barley roasting temperature it takes to achieve the perfect Guinness flavor. Learn why nitrogen does to Guinness and why it’s used. And see some the equipment used to make your new favorite beer.

IS ALCOHOL GOOD OR BAD?

One of the most interactive parts of the tour – other than the tasting – is the 10-question quiz about alcohol . Now I love a trivia game as much as the next person so I took on the challenge.

I won’t spoil the quiz, but through a series of True/False and multiple choice questions it turns out I still have a lot to learn. I got a really terrible score of 4 out of 10.

The questions will teach you about alcohol consumption, how long it takes your liver to process alcohol and tackles common understandings of alcohol effects and whether they’re right.

THE GUINNESS STOREHOUSE BUILDING

Throughout the Guinness Storehouse tour you’ll slowly make your way up higher and higher through the multi-level brewery. Despite how this could come off very factory-like, it is actually a beautiful and bright space.

Windowed-ceilings, colorful glass with mirrored panels to reflect is, as well as refurbished steel beam and brick interiors make for a fascinating journey through the Storehouse .

The use of everyday brewery-related items such as beer casks and machinery in the decoration is impressively unique.

THE TASTE EXPERIENCE

All this talk of beer made you ready for a pint of Guinness? Hold on, we’ll get there. First things first, you’ll get an official explanation of what you’re tasting and how you should taste it .

The group will be ushered into a special room dotted with giant white vats which ooze beer scented plumes of smoke. These are the esters of beer, the flavors. Take a whiff and wait for the staff to serve up a couple dozen mini Guinness glasses.

Grab your shot-o-Guinness, and (without sampling too soon) head over to the tasting room. Here, while waiting for your Guinness to settle, the chief taste specialist will recommend the best way to sample your beer.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF ADVERTISING

Unless you’ve been under a rock for decades you’ve likely seen the distinctive advertising of Guinness. Who doesn’t love the colorful toucan, or the any of the other kooky animals from the Guinness menagerie?

The advertising part of the Guinness Storehouse tour is one of my favorite exhibits. Iconic slogans and posters are on display with statuesque replicas of the most inventive animal creations .

You can end it by watching a video of some of the commercials. In a nod to the fact you have to let a Guinness settle before it achieves the perfect white head on black beer, you might remember the “Good things come to those who wait” commercial of the late-90s.

TAKE A BREAK MID-TOUR

Not sure if you can make it through all the levels without a pint of beer and some sustenance? Or maybe extend your visit after checking out the Gravity Bar. The Guinness Storehouse has more than one place to relax.

Arthur’s Bar serves food, and of course Guinness. While the Gravity Bar is an experience, Arthur’s is a lot less busy of a place to hang out for a while . Take in the views of Dublin while you sit back and relax.

GUINNESS AND A VIEW

You’ve made it through the Guinness Storehouse tour, up through all the floors, and you are now likely an expert on brewing. Time to put the hard work aside and reap the reward.

Your Guinness Storehouse tour ticket includes a pint of Guinness at the Gravity Bar. Hand in your voucher, wait patiently for the pour and enjoy the view while you drink .

There is seating, but the later in the day you go here, the busier it gets. That means seating can be limited. Hover long enough and you might be lucky, or use some Dutch courage to go make new friends.

Failing that, there are plenty of places to stand and savor your pint while gazing out over the beautiful city of Dublin. Spot some landmarks or hang by the bar to watch mesmerizing pour after mesmerizing pour of the Black Stuff.

SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP

As if you’re leaving this fine drinking establishment without a souvenir or two. Preferably a decorative toucan pint glass, a beer or two, or any number of items displaying slogans, logos or advertising campaigns past.

The marketing ploy of filling your patrons with alcohol then making them walk past the gift shop on the way out is genius at its finest . I succumbed and I’m not even ashamed.

Is the Guinness Storehouse tour worth the price?

It’s expensive but it is an immersive experience. You’ll get to try a pint and some samplers which is worth about 15 EUR in itself. It’s a part of history in Ireland, and has one of the coolest bars in the city.

I had never had Guinness before my visit, and I’ll admit, I’m now a fan. I’m really glad my first ever pint of Guinness was in one of the best bars in Ireland, atop the legendary brewery where it was made. That made it even more special .

If it’s your first time in Dublin, the Guinness Storehouse tour really is a must-do experience. Whether you like beer or not, you can’t ignore the power of this famous Irish brand. This really is an interesting place and feels more like a museum. Of course, I wish all museums came with a pint of beer.

It is true what they say about Guinness – that it tastes best in Dublin. I tried it in England and was not a big fan but when I tasted it in Ireland it was completely different, much creamier and fuller flavour. I was at the Dublin brewery many years ago and was enchanted at the displays (loved all the advertisement board through the years). It was a great experience, as your article portrays and the view from the rooftop Gravity bar was one of the best views in Dublin. We stayed and had a few more beers, so the free sample one certainly pays off!

A lovely post that brought back memories of our trip to Dublin which – of course – included the Guinness Storehouse. We really enjoyed our visit and thought the museum was well laid out and nicely designed. We particularly enjoyed the advertising display – so many iconic ads! Having a Guinness (and lots of it) is probably one of the most interesting ways in knowing Dublin and its people. I actually found the Guiness Storehouse fascinating. Once you get past the tourist stuff, the history of the beer and how it is such an integrated part of Ireland (and Dublin) history. I love your observation of filling with alcohol then letting them shop haha. Fun fact, the bbq sauce counts as a liquid and security will take it. (insert sad face here).

Oh no!! More reason to go back – and pack it in your suitcase this time

Whilst this is an experience I would probably skip when in Ireland, I appreciate your comprehensive guide to this tour and sharing with us your impressions and insights. When I paid a visit to Dublin, I knew there was one thing I wanted to do more than anything. A Guinness Storehouse tour!

I think it would almost be criminal to visit Ireland without trying it.

Before I visited Ireland, I couldn’t stand Guinness. Whenever we went out for St. Paddy’s day I’d opt for one pint to celebrate and only end up drinking a little bit as I found it too starchy.

A sacrificial waste of a precious pint I know. I’d then start on the Baileys while wearing my typical leprechaun hat and four-leaf clover glasses.

“It’s bread in a cup” I’d say and if we’re being perfectly honest, it quite literally is.

That was until I flew to Dublin earlier this year and stepped inside its famous Guinness Factory.

A Guinness Storehouse tour is a must when in Dublin

I always thought that the factory must be a bit of a tourist trap.

Sure, it’s number 1 on TripAdvisor but surely, it can’t be all that great. Add on the nice little 16 Euro price tag which includes one pint and I was sure it was going to be ripped off.

But, I am pleased to say I was pleasantly surprised and agree, it really is the best attraction to visit in Dublin.

Plus, you get free beer which you can sip overlooking the city – what’s better than that?

How to reach the Guinness Storehouse tour in Dublin

The building itself is huge and shaped like a massive Guinness pint so you really can’t miss it when you make your way there!

The Guinness Storehouse address is St James’s Gate, Dublin 8, Ireland.

I loved walking around the grounds and seeing the old-fashioned cobbled streets with factory gates.

It really set the scene for how it used to be years ago.

Getting Guinness Storehouse tour tickets

Tours of the Guinness Storehouse are self-led unless you choose to go on a more organised tour.

So, all you need to do is purchase a ticket, try and avoid the massive souvenir store as you reach the top of the stairs.

In the lobby, there is a guide who announces a warm welcome and tells you a little bit about what you’ll be doing!

Don’t miss it, it’s actually really informative. But if you do skip it, not to worry – there are signposts everywhere to make your way around.

You can buy tickets online via their website or at the ticket office inside.

What you can expect to see on a Guinness Storehouse Tour

The brewing process at the guinness storehouse.

Even though the process of making the ale can seem a bit dry, I was amazed at how they brought it to life to you at every step of the way.

The exhibitions were really interactive and actually, I learned quite a lot about what goes on before my ale is served to me in a pint glass.

I won’t give too much away so you can take it in when you’re there but don’t skip any of it – it’s quite an extensive and interesting process.

Barrel Making at the Guinness Storehouse

I loved seeing old videos of the factory and the art of barrel making.

It’s a trade that is pretty rare these days with skilled barrel makers seeking out people for apprenticeships.

It was quite ingenious what the guys did here with the Barrels in the factory.

It almost seemed like works of art that you walked through and could see through old videos the process in barrelling up the black stuff.

Guinness adverts throughout time

My favourite part of the whole visit was the advertising floor!

In England, I’ve seen old Guinness ads placed around vintage railway stations since I was a child. So, to find out the history and story behind them was a really lovely touch and made my visit there.

They also played a lot of TV ads, some interactive displays to get involved in, and retro penny arcade films which are always fun!

Make sure you spend a good time here, the theatres provided play some creative cinema and really go through their advertising through the ages.

It’s amazing, to see the timeline play out and how it’s made Guinness popular and successful to this day.

Tasting session at the Guinness Storehouse

Another feature as you make your way up the beer glass is the optional tasting session – which I would highly recommend you make essential to your visit.

Held in a private tasting room bar, as you make your way through with your group you will get to smell and feel the different hops and the different aromas they produce.

Your host will then take you through to the Velvet Chamber for a tasting session with a barbie-sized pint and guide you through the official way to taste the ale.

I will leave this a secret, but I can tell you it should be drunk in a way that with every sip, you can taste its ruby red flavour resonating through.

Get qualified to pour your own pint on the Guinness Storehouse tour

One of the highlights of the Guinness factory is the fact you can pour your own pint in the Guinness Academy.

What’s more, you get a certificate to show for it!

Your trusted bartender will take you through pouring the perfect pint and then you follow.

I have to admit, I was a little shaky but the ultimate draft should take a full minute to pour.

You need to tilt your glass at a 45-degree angle where it meets the logo of the harp, pour three-quarters of the way up. Then, leave it to settle and pour the rest on top at half pressure.

I am pleased to say I passed and if I can do it, so can you.

Top Tip: They will ask you to choose whether you want to pour your own pint or get a pint at the gravity bar but you can do both. Just opt to pour your own pint in the academy and then take your beer up the elevator to the Gravity bar – simple!

Enjoy the views in the Gravity Bar at the Guinness Storehouse

Once you’ve covered all that the factory tour has to offer, you will be greeted with the most beautiful views of Dublin in their Gravity bar.

It does get busy, so you may have to wait for a seat but the views are really spectacular.

You can see it all and on a clear day, it stretches for miles. I loved visiting when it got to sunset, as Dublin lights up before your eyes.

I’ve never seen so many Guinness gifts in one place!

They have an extensive collection of souvenirs so if you are looking for a nice gift for loved ones back home, this is the place to get them.

I also found their prices weren’t too different from the souvenir shops in the city so it’s better to ensure you get official merchandise.

Don’t miss a Guinness Storehouse tour in Dublin

I used to hate Guinness. But now, I know that if ever I go back to Dublin it will be my go-to drink.

I’m not sure why it tastes so much better in Ireland than it does here in the UK, but either way – I’m a big fan.

One of my favourite advertising campaigns was geared at women with the slogan ‘Black goes with everything.

Anyone that knows me knows that if there was a darker colour than black I would be wearing it, so I was delighted to see some gifts which support that statement.

About The Guinness Tour

The tour begins at the “Seal of Guinness” where Arthur Guinness signed his famous 9,000-year lease. Guides take you through the multilevel storehouse showing how the Guinness Stout is made from the barrel house to the fermentation plant. It all ends with a frosty pint at the bar.

Water from the Wicklow Mountains

Once you learn about the early beginnings, you are lead to a blue waterfall where the freshwater from the Wicklow Mountains is pumped into the brewery.

Dave and I have always said that Guinness definitely tastes better in Ireland and something tells me it’s because of the Wicklow water. The tour showcases the natural ingredients of Guinness in detail. Barley plants are actually growing on the walls!

Guinness Casks – Firkins

Your Guinness Storehouse Tour then takes you to the Cooperage and Transport floor to learn of how casks are made and transported.

Have you ever heard of the word Firkin? In Toronto, we have Firkin pubs all over the city and I never knew what it meant. The word Firkin is the size of a cask. It’s like a keg only smaller.

Tasting Tour of Guinness

The factory tour is fun, but let’s face it, we are all here to drink Guinness. The tasting room is the best brewery tour setting on the planet with dry ice and neon lights adding to the mood. The hallway leads to a stark white tasting room with smoke billowing out of slender containers.

The containers aren’t just for show, each container is filled with the aromas of Guinness. The smell of barley, malt, hops, and yeast fills the air. It’s as delicious as you ever could have expected.

Once you are finished in the white room, it’s on to the next room that feels more like the inside of a grand ship than a beer tour. That’s because it is modeled after the ships that transported Guinness to the mainland. You can even ring the bell from the ship Lady Miranda Guinness that used to transport Guinness from Dublin to Liverpool.

Guinness in Advertising

One of my favourite exhibits in the Guinness Storehouse was the display of advertising campaigns over the years. Guinness has always been quite creative when it comes to advertising their beer. From a whistling oyster to a bicycle-riding fish, there have been some very unique commercials out there.

Guinness is Good for You!

What I loved hearing was that Guinness is actually good for you. Once upon a time, people drank a pint of Guinness after giving blood in Dublin to replenish their electrolytes. That is certainly one way to entice people to do a good deed. Did you know, Guinness is also considered a light beer? Even though it is dark in colour, it is light in taste. The Guinness Harp

Did you know that the emblem of Ireland is a harp? When Guinness developed their label, they too used the harp but flipped it backward so that they could trademark it. When you visit the book of Kells at Trinity College you will see the real Irish harp on display.  The harp was greatly revered in history and often played at courts.

How to Pour a Pint of Guinness

When visiting the Guinness Storehouse, you can either take the regular tour through the brewery or you can add a premium tasting experience. The Connoisseur Tour takes you to the Guinness Academy brings you into a private room where you learn how to pour a pint of Guinness.

• You can book your Connoisseur Tour directly at the Guinness Storehouse Website.

You’ll master the art of the six-step process of pouring the perfect pint of Guinness that takes 119.5 seconds to perfect. The harp plays an important role in making the pour perfect.

• When filling the pint, the bartender pulls the tap fully until the beer reaches the harp emblem on the Guinness pint.
• Once it touches the top of the harp, they stop pouring and let it sit until the cascade has settled to a nice dark pint.
• They then continue to pour the rest of the head.

Once you are finished you receive a diploma and a fresh pint of Guinness to enjoy on your own.

Gravity Bar at Guinness

The Guinness Storehouse Tour doesn’t end like other brewery tours. This one takes you to the 7th-floor of the factory to the Gravity Bar. Enjoy the sunset in this chic bar as you sip on a complimentary pint of Guinness. It has some of the best views of Dublin. Once you are done, you make your way down the escalator to the exit where you can pick up your complimentary checked coats and bags before heading off to explore more of Dublin.

Guinness Storehouse Fast Facts

Taxis wait outside the storehouse so transportation is easy. The Storehouse is only a 20-minute walk from the city center should you prefer to go on foot.

Guinness Storehouse is open 7 Days a week 9:30 – 7pm (last entrance is 5pm).

Cost of entry is €19-€25 and includes a pint of Guinness plus a tasting in the white tasting room. You can book at the brewery or advance for skip the line tickets. The Connoisseur and Perfect Pour Experiences are Extra

We loved our experience and the Connoisseur tour is worth the extra cost. You get another pint of beer and get to pour your own pint in a private tasting room.

Thank’s for the great article. Everyone who visits this city should do the Guinness Storehouse Tour. My favorite exhibit is also the one with all the commercials and advertisement campaigns of Guinness over the years. Particularly the Bicycle riding fish, very appropriate considering that one of the best ways to get to know Dublin is by bicycle.

What You Need to Know About the Guinness Tour, Dublin

If you’re planning on buying Guinness Storehouse tickets, there may be a few things you’ll need to know. Here is some important information on this must-do tour. 

How Long is the Brewery Tour?

As the tour is completely self-guided , you can take as long as you want to do it. The recommended duration of the tour is 1.5 hours, but you can stay longer if you want to make the most of the facilities.

When is the Brewery Tour Open?

Guinness Storehouse tours operate from 9.30 am to 7 pm. This is open throughout the week. The last admission to the tour is at 5 pm on regular days. During the June, July and August summer months, the storehouse closes at 9 pm with final admissions being at 7 pm. 

The tour operates all year long but is closed on Christmas eve, Christmas day, Good Friday, and St Stephens day. 

Should You Book Guinness Tours?

It is possible to purchase Guinness Storehouse tickets on arrival, but we do recommend booking in advance. As this is such a popular Dublin attraction, having your ticket ready beforehand will make things much easier and may save you some disappointment.

Where is the Guinness Storehouse?

The Guinness Storehouse can be found at St James’s Gate in Dublin. You’ll find the entrance on Market Street. 

If you’re travelling there by public transport, it would be best to take the Red Luas from the city centre. This stops at St James’s Street – a five-minute walk away from the brewery tour. There are also plenty of taxis that wait outside the tour – making it an easy place to find transport. 

Guinness Storehouse Tour Options

When taking the tour, there are two different options that you can choose from. You could go for the regular option which involves the standard tour through the brewery. 

Otherwise, there is the premium tasting experience which you can add onto your tour. This option includes a stop at the Guinness Academy where you will learn the 6 step process to pouring the perfect pint. 

You will leave this with a diploma, as well as a tasty glass of Guinness to enjoy!

While the tour is self-guided, it’s worth making sure you get to the Tasting Rooms in good time, as this is one of the most popular and interesting parts of the Guinness Storehouse. Here, you can experience the unique taste of the stout through its manufacturing process.

You can also learn more about the art of brewing or how to pour the perfect pint, in the in-house Guinness Academy. There are also other optional add on experiences available, that provide a more detailed Connoisseur experience for visitors.

There is also an opportunity to enjoy a relaxing drink, as well as delicious Irish cuisine, overlooking great views across the city. On the fifth floor, you can sit back with the Guinness and food Experience, while on the top floor, you can enjoy a complimentary pint while taking in great panoramic vistas of Dublin.

The Guinness Storehouse is open 7 days a week, from 9:30 am to 7 pm, and from 9 am to 8 pm during July and August.

Last admission is 5 pm, apart from in July and August, when last admission is at 6 pm.

The Guinness Storehouse is closed on the 24 th – 26 th December, and on Good Friday.

The Guinness Storehouse is busiest in the late afternoon, from 1 pm onwards. To avoid the crowds and busy waiting times, it’s best to visit earlier in the day, with morning visits being the quietest.

• The Guinness Storehouse is one of the most popular attractions in Dublin so to make the most of your experience, it’s a good idea to plan ahead of your visit, and ensure you have tickets booked in advance.

Our guide with the yellow hat did to well. I loved the library, was interested by the book of Kells 's story and the walking around the city and the castle give you a first impression of Dublin.
