trek madone slr 6 2019 price

There are two types of cyclists in this world; those that want to go fast, and those that don’t. The upgraded and evolved, 2019 Trek Madone satisfies the appetite of those riders who dream about speed. Put yourself in the saddle of this bike for a second… You’re going flat-out… You’re dropping down on the handlebars… You’re tucking in your arms… You’re fixing your eyes on the speeding tarmac…. You’re hearing the bike pierce the air… You’re feeling the smooth roll of the wheels, every time you pedal… You’ve got rhythm, you’ve got symmetry, and you’re manufacturing speed like it’s nothing!

Our ride on the 2019 Madone is probably best described by what you’ve just read. Nothing but pure elegance from Trek’s flagship aero-road bike. We’ve mentioned that its fast. We’ve mentioned that it’s a wind weapon. But is it comfortable? As far as aerodynamically focused road bikes go, yes it is. Trek have managed to combine all three essential aspects of road bikes, into one. Lets find out how.

trek madone slr 6 2019 price

#1: Aerodynamics

The Madone SLR 6 follows a perfectly designed shape of a plane wing if you look it straight in the eyes. Trek’s 700 Series OCLV carbon fibre material forms the frame’s lightweight and aero features. The wind flow around and over the bike is seamless, and this is because of the down-tube that takes form in what Trek call, a KVF aero shape. Along with wing-like, Bontrager dropper handlebars; clinched by an aero stem, that uses the brand’s Blendr technology to integrate your cycling computer, without buying extra mounts. Even though the Madone is centred around aerodynamics, the designers at Trek kept a clear mind in adding practical features to the bike itself.

#2: Comfort

Comfort is key with any road bike, especially if you intend to spend more than 2 hours in the saddle. The Madone’s comfort levels are acceptable for a bike of its standard. It comes with an adjustable Top-Tube IsoSpeed decoupler, which lets the seat post flex under impacts from irregular roads. The bar and stem of the bike, are also adjustable and can allow you to fine tune how the bike handles. Bontrager’s Montrose Elite lightweight saddle also made a difference in comfort. It was less restricting to leg movement and was quite well cushioned.

#3: Quality

Components can make or break any bike. Trek, however, are well acquainted with desires of road bike riders. Therefore, when questioning what components were best for the Madone, they looked at what was the most functional. For starters, going with flat-mount hydraulic disc brakes made braking solid and reliable on the Madone SLR 6. Minimizing the strain on your hands. And that’s a point a we’ll always argue. Integrating with the disc brakes was Shimano’s Ultegra drivetrain that literally gets smoother every time you shift.

  • Frame-set: Frame700 Series OCLV Carbon
  • Wheels: Bontrager Aeolus Comp 5 Disc Tubeless Ready
  • Drivetrain: Shimano Ultegra, 11-speed.
  • Saddle: Bontrager Montrose Elite
  • Seatpost: Madone carbon seatpost, 25 mm offset w/integrated light mount
  • Handlebar: Madone-specific adjustable aero VR-CF, internal cable routing
  • Grips: Bontrager tape
  • Stem: Madone-specific internal cable routing
  • Brake-set: Shimano Ultegra flat-mount hydraulic disc
  • Total Bike Weight: 56cm – 8.38 kg

Trek’s road bike geometry is always on point, and provides riders with a little bit of everything, from responsive handling to rider proportional sizing. The Madone SLR 6 makes use of the brand’s H1.5 FIT frame measurements. Which have been tried and tested countless times, with the Trek Segafredo, and Drops cycling teams. You can play around and find out what geometry works for you. However, our test bike was 56cm frame size, with which we got a 73.3-degree seat post angle, and 73.5-degree head-tube angle.

Keep it Fast and Low!

The Madone SLR 6 is like a fighter jet on steroids! Its unique and full-out aerodynamic design can pierce the air efficiently. The bike creates an ideal setup that almost comes as a second nature, to duck-down into an aero-tuck. Which gets you out of the full brunt of wind resistance.

trek madone slr 6 2019 price

Having been tested and raced by pro teams around the world at grand tours and one day events, Trek’s Madone has a perfect design for climbing and descending. Its low and fast! The cassette on the Ultegra drivetrain can feel like its meant for really hard pedaling, with its smaller gear ratio. Nevertheless, it was lenient enough to get us up a fair amount hills, without burning out. One thing that we really like about aero road bikes, is the stiffened up frame. During a sprint you simply have to pick a line with the bike, and it holds it. No matter how hard you hit the pedals. The same can be said coming down descends. It didn’t wobble around, instead it was smooth and firm, even when banking on corners. The slightly thicker handlebars supplied good grip, and great control over this race horse.

A good review is never complete without a few criticisms over a bike or product. And so sadly, yes. There were a few things we didn’t like on the Madone SLR 6. Mainly, the tyres. We’re not sure if this was just a bad batch of rubber, but we had a lot of punctures! Most of the punctures’ cause was from a simple stone, and we couldn’t fathom why. It could’ve been that we were running the tyre pressure too high, and thus we lowered it. Alas, no-luck. The punctures still accrued. We eventually put it down to the fact that Bontrager’s R3 Hard-case Lite tyre set, are not that durable. In fact, that’s quite a hick-up, because it’s enough to dampen your mood on a ride. Perhaps a tyre swap on this bike model, to one with a harder compound, is in order.

trek madone slr 6 2019 price

The big question is, does the 2019 Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc do enough to break away from the pack, and get you to the finish first? In our opinion, it does! As far as technology goes, the brand’s IsoSpeed and smoothly moulded carbon fibre, along with integrated disc brakes, are able to enhance your performance greatly. While the bike did lack a bit of agility, and the tyres weren’t impressive, the Madone is still elite when it comes to speed. It’ll keep you living life in the fast lane!

Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc Speed: The Ride

From the moment you first ride the Trek Madone SLR   6 Disc Speed you know you’re in for a treat. It looks fast, it feels fast, it is fast. Trek is one of the most recognizable bike brands in the world and the Madone has been one of its most successful bikes over the last two decades. With the Madone SLR 6 Disc Speed nothing changes there and it is a pure joy to ride. Its aero-geometry is, unsurprisingly, well thought out and it’s a bike that begs to be ridden fast. Standing up out of the saddle and laying down some top-end power will reward you with a burst of acceleration that’ll have you grinning from ear to ear: this is bike riding at its finest. The frame beneath you is stiff yet fast and responsive. That said, this isn’t a racing machine that lacks comfort. It handles well—you feel stable—and you can lean it through tight turns and corners with relative ease.

Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc Speed: The Good

The Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc Speed is intelligently designed and easy to ride. It’ll remind you of why you first fell in love with riding bikes in the first place. For triathletes looking for a road bike that is both fast, comfortable, and easy to train on, you will not be disappointed. The Shimano Ultegra hydraulic disc brakes deliver sharp, crisp braking and all brake and gearing cables are neatly routed through the frame to maximize aerodynamics. Riding in the drops is incredibly fun on this bike—in fact, it almost begs you to get down in the drops and stay there, especially on more technical descents. Speed and comfort do not feel compromised in this position.

Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc Speed: The Medium

When you’re parting with more than $6,000 for a bike, we think it’s more than fair to expect electronic shifting, but instead here you’ve got a Shimano Ultegra mechanical set-up, which seems a little surprising at this price point. Obviously, you don’t necessarily expect an aero road bike to be the greatest climbing machine, but we found the 50/34 compact gearing helped improve that considerably.

Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc Speed: Conclusions

This is a bike that’s easy to fall in love with on first ride, especially if you’re someone who loves riding hard and fast. It’s unashamedly aero and will tick all the boxes for triathletes looking for something close to tri speed on a road bike. You will definitely not be disappointed with how it handles and accelerates, but you could feel disappointed that you don’t have electronic shifting. If you’re OK with that (for this price tag), you’re going to have a lot of fun pedaling this bike to many PRs.

What sets apart the  Trek Madone  apart from the competition is its ability to combine advanced aero-dynamics and superior ride quality, along with an ultra-lightweight build into one race bike. It is the Ultimate Race Bike.

Part of the magic of  Madone  is the overall balanced ride feel that you experience as you are pushing the bike to your fastest personal records.  Madone  delivers on the promise of the Ultimate Race Bike with full aero-speed that can take on cobbles, climbs and descents.

New for 2019 is the introduction of the Adjustable Top Tube IsoSpeed. IsoSpeed smooths out the road for a sublime ride, diminishing fatiguing impacts and allowing the rider to remain fresher for longer. The all-new Toptube IsoSpeed on the  Madone SLR  allows you to customise compliance according to your preference, and the current terrain. In the most compliant setting, the new  2019 Madone SLR  is up to 17% more compliant than its predecessor.

To keep all that compliance under control, Toptube IsoSpeed is damped to rebound in a smooth and controlled motion, providing a more stable ride on rougher roads; reducing rebound by 13% on the new  Madone . This technology also allowed Trek to closely match vertical compliance values across all frame sizes. So no matter what size bike you ride, you will benefit fully from the IsoSpeed compliance.

The 700 Series OCLV Carbon frame is at the heart of the bikes performance, manipulated into the perfect KVF aero-shapes to cheat the wind, as well as being fine-tuned across various areas to shave as much weight as possible, all while balancing aero-dynamic requirements.

Disc Brake technology has been fully integrated into the frame's overall design, as well as providing undeniable stopping power without any penalty to the aero-dynamic profile, so you get powerful braking without any aero-dynamic sacrifice.

Madone SLR  also provides riders more stem options, additional bar sizes, and +/- degrees of bar rotation. With this new fit update, Trek offers one of the broadest spectrums of possible race fits for men and women with an integrated aero cockpit.

Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc 2019 Features

  • The fastest just got faster - the new Madone SLR frame was redesigned to be more aerodynamic than ever
  • Adjustable Top Tube IsoSpeed lets you adjust compliance, and it's damped with an elastomer so even when it's in the most compliant setting, you won't bounce on the road
  • Disc brakes offer betting braking performance and extra clearance for wider, more stable tyres
  • A separate bar and stem with an aero carbon faceplate gives you great adjustability without compromising on aerodynamics
  • The micro-adjust Madone seatmast has an integrated mount for the Bontrager Flare RT rear light

2019 Trek Madone SLR 6 review

Written by Matt Eagar.

A few months back Trek revealed the sixth iteration of its race-proven Madone road bike. In recent years the Madone has transformed into an all-out aero road machine promising uncompromising performance while still delivering a comfortable ride.

The latest version is said to further refine the Madone platform with the addition of a disc brake option and a revamped IsoSpeed dampening system among a raft of other improvements.

ccs-2-0-98928700-1543834291.jpg

The Madone SLR frame sits at the top of the range and makes use of Trek’s lightest 700 series OCLV Carbon. Aside from the all-important disc brake option, only available on the SLR variant, the stand out feature on the Madone SLR is the adjustable IsoSpeed decoupler.

Trek’s marketing tells us that the new adjustable version of the IsoSpeed decoupler, now fitted to the top tube, is 17% more compliant on the softest setting while 21% stiffer on the firmest setting when compared to the previous Madone. Dosed with some heavy scepticism, I was pleasantly surprised by this feature, but more on that later.

ccs-2-0-85412700-1543835074.jpg

We tested the Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc, equipped with a Shimano Ultegra 2×11 groupset and Bontrager Aeolus Comp wheels. The new SLR frameset is impeccably clean in its looks, with an integrated, cable-free cockpit and internal cable routing throughout. In the silvery-grey colour-way supplied, the bike reminded me of a stealthy navy frigate or fighter jet, filling my inner eight year old with glee. The bulky tubing on the SLR may not be to everyone’s taste, especially on the louder colour options, but in this navy inspired livery it feels well balanced.

The Madone SLR comes with an integrated aero seat post and on the 56cm frame, the 160mm post supplied as standard was just short of my required extension. Thankfully Trek also offer a 205mm post and had one delivered to us within two days. Given my abnormally long legs for my height, this shouldn’t be an issue for most, but still worth checking.

ccs-2-0-30015700-1543834347.jpg

The two-piece bar and stem houses all cables to create a beautifully simple cockpit. The attachment point allows for +5 or -5 degrees in angle adjustment via a four bolt system neatly tucked away on the underside.

ccs-2-0-64432300-1543834681.jpg

The Bontrager Aeolus Comp wheels piqued my interest as upon closer inspection you may note that these are aluminium rims with a carbon aero fairing. This somewhat unconventional approach provides the aero advantages you’d want on a bike like the SLR (and let’s be honest, the “aero look”) while keeping the price in check. While they’re not the full carbon deep sections you might be inclined to expect at this end of the market, this choice likely helps to squeeze the price under the R100 000 mark.

On a related note, although out of the box the wheels are fitted with 25C Bontrager tyres, the frame supports up to 28C tyres according to Trek, but it looks like there’s enough room to go even wider if you wish.

On the road

Typically a race-oriented aero bike has to make some compromises in terms of handling and ride quality in the pursuit of speed. The Madone SLR, however, offers a degree of comfort and handling not usually associated with this category of bicycle.

This is largely thanks to the IsoSpeed Decoupler system, which as the name suggests, decouples the frame at the junction of the top tube and seat tube. The two frame components are connected by a series of bolts and elastomer dampers with a sliding adjuster to change the feel of the frame.

ccs-2-0-29905400-1543834352.jpg

The separate sections of frame which make up the IsoSpeed Decoupler system are visible below the top tube.

With the damper on its most compliant setting, the ride is incredibly smooth while the frame still feels responsive. Sliding the adjuster to the firmest setting created a remarkable difference in the ride feel. Bumps in the road that had been almost entirely softened were now jarring and ever-present. To the point where on the bumpier road surfaces I had just sailed through unphased, I was now easing out of the saddle to find relief from the shocks. On a smooth surface, this harshness would be welcome and the obvious distinction in ride quality is a testament to just how effective the decoupler is.

As an aero race bike, the SLR feels great. Without a wind tunnel and a PhD I can’t say how much faster it is or isn’t, but suffice to say that in the drops it gives the impression of speed. The stiff frame lends itself to quick accelerations and the bike holds speed with ease on flats and rolling hills.

Given the class of bike, you can’t expect it to be an outwardly nimble climber, but aside from carrying a little extra weight, I was impressed with the feel on the climbs. Particularly out of the saddle where aero bikes tend to get increasingly awkward as the gradient ticks up, the SLR felt quite composed and comfortable. It’s by no means my first pick for a Hors catégorie ascent, but for any local road race it’s a perfectly capable climber.

Overall the bike handles well with a very stable, confident feel on the downhills. Although stable, the bike still responds well to sharp directional changes without the twitchiness that can accompany the aero label.

The Trek Madone SLR 6 delivers an unmatched ride quality among a crop of ever improving aero road bikes. Add to that great handling and good climbing manners, this aero road bike is quite simply a great road bike. The top end frame construction and dampening features do add to the price, but it seems Trek has indeed solved the aero plus comfort equation.

  • Beautifully finished frame, all internal cables
  • Superb ride quality with adjustability via the IsoSpeed Decoupler
  • Great handling all round
  • Spec-for-spec it is on the expensive side, but the top end frame features shouldn’t be ignored
  • The carbon-shod alloy wheels are a good candidate for an upgrade

Disc Brakes and (Much) More for Trek's New Madone

It might look the same on the outside, but underneath it's an all new Madone

Trek Madone SLR Disc Lifestyle Portrait

Underneath the Madone SLR's familiar face is a long list of updates and improvements. The addition of a disc brake option is the most significant, but Trek's team also updated the bike's bump-absorbing IsoSpeed seat tube, made the cockpit more adjustable, updated the geometry, and freshened the Madone's graphics and colors.

Many Madone Models

In sharp contrast to some of the new aero bikes that have rolled out recently, Trek offers the new Madone in a bunch of options: rim or disc brakes, for electronic and mechanical drivetrains, and in women's and men's builds.

The Madone SLR version comes in eight models that range in price from $12,500 to $6,000. All SLR models use an integrated seat mast, and are equipped with the same Madone-specific bar and stem. All models get tubeless ready wheels, 50/34 chainrings and 11-28t cassettes. The Madone uses the BB90 bottom bracket system.

Trek Madone SLR Control Center

A revised Control Center is located under the downtube bottle-cage mount and holds the Di2 junction box and battery. It also anchors the rear brake hose to prevent it from rattling in the Madone's sizable downtube.

All Madone SLR models are made with Trek's highest grade OCLV700 carbon fiber composite. At this time, the Madone SLR models are made overseas and not in Trek's Wisconsin factory.

Trek Madone SLR 9 OCLV

The top-of-the line Madone SLR 9 Disc comes with Shimano's Dura Ace Di2 disc group , Bontrager Aeolus XXX 6 Disc wheels, 25mm Bontrager R4 320tpi tires, and carbon-railed Bontrager Montrose Pro saddle. With standard paint, this SLR 9 Disc is $12,000; choosing one of the "premium" paint schemes adds $500. Note that, unlike some of its competitors, this model is not equipped with a power meter.

The SLR 8 ($7,500; $8000 with premium paint) is a rim-brake model. It's built with Shimano Dura Ace mechanical drivetrain, Bontrager Aeolus Pro 5 wheels, 25mm Bontrager R3 tires, and Bontrager Montrose Elite saddle.

Trek Madone SLR Disc DROPS Front three quarter

The SLR 6 Disc has the biggest range of models. This model is built with Shimano Ultegra mechanical group, Bontrager Aeolus Comp 5 Disc wheels, 25mm Bontrager R3 wheels, Bontrager Montrose Elite saddle. It is available men's and women's build. With standard paint, the SLR 6 Disc is $6000; with premium pain it's $6,500.

Men's and women's builds use the same frame, with the same geometry—only finish and some parts (saddle for example) are changed for the women's builds.

In addition to these prebuilt models, Trek offers the Madone SLR through its Project-One custom parts and paint program. P1 bikes will be offered with more parts options, and huge range of paint customization options.

Trek Madone SLR 9 IsoSpeed

The $4,000 Madone SL 6 is a carry over of the previous generation's frame, though built with lower-grade OCLV500 carbon. This model is rim-brake only, with standard bar and stem compatibility. It's built with a Shimano Ultegra mechanical drivetrain , Bontrager Aeolus Comp 5 wheels, 25mm Bontrager R2 tires; Bontrager Montrose Comp saddle, and Bontrager stem and aero-top handlebar.

The Madone SLR disc frame weighs 1,112 grams; the rim-brake frame weighs 1,131 grams (weights are for a 56cm frame with seat post, but no paint). Note that the rim-brake frame weighs more than the disc brake frame. Fork weights are 421 grams for disc, and 378 grams for rim.

Trek Madone SLR 8 Rim Brake

The Madone SL frame weighs 1,112 grams with seat post and the fork adds another 376 grams.

Trek claims a complete SLR 9 Disc weighs 7.405 kg (16.32 pounds). The SLR 8 with rim brakes has a claimed weight of 7.087kg (15.62 pounds)

Disc Brakes

Like almost all new disc-equipped bikes, Trek uses Shimano's flat-mount caliper attachment standard (Dura Ace and Ultegra calipers come only in this style), with 12x142mm (rear) and 12x100mm (front) thru axles.

With disc brakes, the new Madone has slightly more drag (3,216 grams compared to 3,202) than the previous generation (rim-brake-only bike). The 14 gram difference met Trek's design goal of 30 grams or less of the previous generation.

Trek Madone SLR Disc Rear

That drag difference is averaged across a -12.5-degree to 12.5-degree yaw sweep, which is a little narrower than most brands test–Specialized tests -15 degrees to 15 degrees and Cannondale tested its new SystemSix (and its competitors) between -20 and 20 degrees. Trek claims that its range is suitable, saying that it is the most common yaw a rider experiences based on real-world data-collection studies."

Trek Madone SLR Disc Drag Data

The wind angle you experience on the road is subject to many factors, perhaps none greater than your fitness. The faster you ride, the straighter the wind you experience becomes. At some angles the new Madone SLR Disc is faster than the previous generation Madone with rim brakes; but at most angles tested, it is a tiny bit slower.

Trek did not provide any information about the Madone's performance relative to its competitors. Not that it would have mattered anyway as the aero category has been completely upended this week.

Trek Madone SLR Disc Women's DROPS Fork and Rotor

A molded-in tube guides the front brake hose for easier assembly or replacement.

Maximum officially allowable tire width for the disc brake Madone is 28mm, which, in the new aero disc world, is on the smaller side. The new Venge, for example, can take up to 32mm-wide tires.

New Rim Brakes

While disc brakes seem to have established themselves as the standard for high-end road bikes, rim brakes still have their fans. Trek didn't neglect the trusty, light, and elegant rim brake when designing the Madone SLR. In fact, it made a new one.

Trek Madone SLR Front Rim Brake

The biggest noticeable change is that the front brake has been relocated to the back of the fork, which improves the (rim brake) frame's aerodynamics slightly (Trek did not provide aero testing data). The new front brake is five grams lighter than the one fitted to the previous Madone; the new rear brake is the same weight as the previous brake design.

An updated brake-arm design provides independent spring tension adjustment, and independent adjustment of arm position. The latter allows the rider to easily adjust the brake arms to accommodate (external) rim widths of 23 to 28.5mm without fiddling with the brake cable. Maximum, official, tire size on the new Madone SLR for rim brakes is 25mm.

Trek Madone SLR Rim Brake Fork

Somewhat crazily, the front-brake housing goes down the front of the fork steerer, then goes into a hole in the steerer above the lower headset bearing, then out the crown. I assume Trek's engineers have done their homework, but I have to admit that a hole in the fork steerer so close to the crown gives me a little pause.

More Adjustable IsoSpeed, Now With Damper

Borrowing an idea first seen on the Domane SLR, the Madone's IsoSpeed Decoupler, which allows the seat tube more freedom to flex now offers rider-adjustable stiffness (it was fixed in the previous generation). The slider is located under the top tube, and is adjusted by loosening a single bolt.

Trek Madone SLR Disc Adjustable IsoSpeed

At the extremes of the adjuster's position, the Madone SLR can be up to 22 percent stiffer, or up to 17 percent softer than the previous Madone frame. The minimum and maximum vertical compliance numbers vary slightly by frame size, but all sizes have very similar values.

Another significant update to the Madone's IsoSpeed Decoupler is the addition of a small damper. This is the first time a damper has been added to any of Trek's IsoSpeed-equipped bikes. The damper is a bit of squishy material that, when displaced by a bump, slows the IsoSpeed's return to its original position. The Madone's white paper claims the "damper is reducing the amount rebound magnitude after impact by as much as 13 percent."

Trek Madone SLR IsoSpeed Damper

The should help reign in some of the bounciness that could occur when riding an undamped IsoSpeed equipped bike. This will be particularly welcome now that the Madone's IsoSpeed can provide more vertical deflection. I would suspect Trek will add the damper to future versions of its other IsoSpeed equipped bikes, the Domane and the Boone.

Revised Cockpit

The previous generation of Madone arrived with a sleek, integrated carbon bar and stem, which limited bar position options, and made changing stem length more involved (because the whole unit had to be replaced). It also offered fewer stem-length/stem-angle/bar-width/bar-shape options than a two-piece system.

Trek Madone SLR Handlebar and Stem Profile

For the new Madone SLR, Trek's product team has developed a two-piece bar and stem that maintains the same aerodynamic properties of the one-piece system, but offers a much wider range of fit combinations (40 versus 26 for the one-piece). Additionally, the two-piece system provides +/- five degrees of bar roll.

Stems are offered in -7 degrees and -14 degrees rise, and in 90, 110, 110, 120, and 130mm lengths. The new Madone bar has back-swept tops (the old bar had straight tops) and comes in 380, 400, 420, and 440mm (center to center) widths. All bars have 93mm reach and 123mm drop–note that Bontrager measures reach a bit differently than other brands, so its reaches look long in comparison.

Trek Madone SLR Handlebar and Stem

Though it's now a tw0–piece system, the controls still run through the middle of the stem, so a stem swap still requires uninstalling the brake and derailleur cables/wires/hoses/housings from the frame.

Trek Madone SLR Seatpost Tail Light

The Madone's "seat post" has been updated as well. The clamping system is now an internal wedge for a cleaner look compared to the previous Madone, and a light mount for Bontrager's Flare R rear light has been integrated as well. The standard post has 25mm of offset; an optional post with 5mm offset will be available.

New Geometry

For several years, Trek has offered its flagship road frames in two geometries. H2 gave riders a little more stack and reach relative to standard road racing geometry. H1 however was intended for limber professional racers. It had very long reaches and very low stacks.

Trek Madone SLR H1.5 Geometry

The Madone SLR comes in a new geometry Trek calls H1.5 and it's almost exactly half way between H1 and H2 geometry. It also bring's Treks sizing more in line with its competitors' standard road geometry.

Trek Madone SLR H1.5 Geometry

Trek offers stock versions of the new Madone SLR models in standard paint schemes or in fancier premium–AKA Project One Now–paint that incurs a $500 upcharge.

Trek Madone SLR 9 Disc Black Viper Red

For example, the top-of-the line Madone SLR 9 Disc comes in black with red accents as its standard paint. But you can also get it in a few premium colors: neon yellow and black, sunburst and black, and the Trek Segafredo team replica design.

Trek Madone SLR 9 Disc Premium Sunburst

Related: I'd like to congratulate Trek for using the largest logo I've ever seen on a frame. The down tube logo used on the Trek Segafredo and Trek DROPS team paint is a sight to behold.

Trek madone 3rd party reviews ,   trek madone size chart, 2022 trek madone review - a tpc rider's quick take.

  • Aero masterclass
  • Trek engineers locked themselves in a wind tunnel with this bike. Every curve, edge, and component shouts aerodynamics. From the IsoFlow tech to the one-piece aero bar and stem this bike is designed for slicing through air.
  • IsoFlow Comfort
  • One of the standout features of the Madone is Trek’s IsoFlow technology, which makes for a forgiving ride, especially on longer epics. IsoFlow helps the seatmast flex, soaking up road vibrations. It’s rare for a speed-focused road bike to excel in comfort, yet here we are.
  • Integrated everything
  • In the Madone, the term "fully integrated" is taken to new heights. From the cables to the cockpit, everything is tucked away, contributing not just to aerodynamics but also to a jaw-dropping aesthetic.
  • Speed and beauty come at a cost. The Madone’s premium price could act as a barrier for many. It's a serious investment, and budget-friendly aero options are out there.
  • Price: $7,999 (SLR 6)
  • Weight woes
  • Despite the carbon fiber frame and components, the Madone isn't a featherweight in its category. It's a solid build, but riders focused on climbing might find it a tad on the heavier side.
  • Weight: 17lbs (56cm)
  • Versatility questions
  • While the Madone excels on flat terrain and downhill blasts, it's not the most versatile option for a wide range of riding conditions. Climbers and those who encounter varying terrain may find it limiting.

Arrival and Departure: Moscow Airports, Train Stations, Buses

Flying to / from moscow.

If you take a domestic flight , it'll be either to / from Sheremetyevo 1 or Domodedovo airports.

The new and renovated Vnukovo airport serves mostly domestic flights (UtAir, Vladivostok Avia, flights to North Caucasus), as well as German Wings flights to/from Germany.

To get from the airports to the center of Moscow you can take Aeroexpress train, which is the fastest and easiest way to get to the city. A train ride takes about 35-40 minutes and costs about 500R (€8) one way. Tickets can be purchased on the spot or using Aeroexpress iPhone app.  You can also get a taxi from the airport . On average a trip to the center of the city takes about 1 hour (can be more during peak times and less in the night and on the weekends), prices start at €20 one way if you order a taxi through Uber or Yandex.Taxi. The problem is that there are many taxis outside and no designated waiting point, so if you don't speak Russian and don't have a Russian phone number it may be hard to coordinate with the driver. You can use one of the taxi desks at the airport (then you pay about €30 to €50 for a ride) or you can also order a transfer from the airport to any address in Moscow online through our site. We pass your orders to a reliable partner: they have English-speaking drivers, 24-hour customer support, and confirm within a few minutes.

17 Exciting Things to do in Moscow

Written By: Linda Voltaire

Updated On: December 21, 2022

the very best things to do in moscow

Visiting Russia? These are the top 17 things to do in Moscow to help you plan your trip.

If the western world has New York City , the first great metropolis on the eastern side of our planet is Moscow. A huge city with a complicated and impressive history, Moscow gets a bad rep over Russian politics – but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Capital to the largest country in the world, Moscow takes the grandeur of its standing very seriously.

This is a place where luxury is king and where opulence takes a front seat in every aspect of life. The buildings are grand and imposing, the parks are luscious and enormous, and even the subway stations look different in Moscow than anywhere else in the world.

Best Things to do in Moscow, Russia

Walking around Moscow is also going through the tumultuous history of the 20th century, which had Russia as one of its main protagonists. There are fascinating remains of these times everywhere in the former Soviet capital, from the gorgeous Seven Sisters skyscrapers to the Orthodox cathedrals that were closed for the better part of a century.  Still, Moscow is also a completely modern city, with a vibrant social and party scene, incredible restaurants, and some of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

After living in Russia’s capital as an ex-pat for four years, I got the privilege to experience not only the main attractions in Moscow but also the everyday life in this huge city and quickly found my sweat spots off the beaten tracks! So here is my list of my top 17 things to do in this exciting metropolis!

Attractions in Moscow

When visiting a famous city like this one, it’s a must to go through the most iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists.

1. The Red Square, Kremlin & Surrounding Area

moscow tourist attractions | St. Basil’s Cathedral

No place tells the story of Moscow’s power in the past century the way the Red Square does. This is where the biggest political meetings in the USSR occurred for many decades, and you can feel the power on each step.

Here, you’ll also find the historic museum at the entrance, showcasing the decades of history behind this iconic landmark. The Lenin Mausoleum, perhaps the most famous resting place in the world and home to the remains of the former communist leader, is also here.

On one side of the Red Square you’ll find the Kremlin, the fortified complex that now hosts the presidential residence. This is also home to the most iconic of all Moscovite landmarks: St. Basil’s Cathedral, a 16th-century marvel of colors. This is the best spot to take a selfie and show the world you’ve reached the Russian capital!

2. Bolshoi Theatre

You can easily spend a couple of days just exploring the Moscovite city centre, and the Bolshoi Theatre should be your second stop. Walk past the Red Square and then head to the nearby Bolshoi Theatre, one of the oldest and most renowned houses of opera and ballet on Earth.

Visit for the impressive early 19th-century architecture, but if you’re seeing a ballet performance, make sure you book between 3 and 6 months in advance! I can strongly recommend this as it is a truly unique experience!

  • Book a private 2-hour tour of the legendary Bolshoi Theatre.
  • See the presidential box reserved for tzars, watch a rehearsal and skip the lines through a separate entrance.
  • Free Cancellation up to 24-hours in advance.

3. Luxury Shopping at GUM and TSUM

russia moscow sites | GUM

While many might think of Moscow as the sad place with the long bread queues from the USSR days, it’s been quite the capitalist haven for a while.

If you’re up for some shopping, you’ll find one of the biggest luxury malls in town, TSUM, right behind the Bolshoi and GUM, at the red square. GUM is the most famous department store in town, where you’ll find luxury everywhere and all high-end brand.

All in an imposing late 19th-century building with lots of history, worth a visit just for the design, its bridges and the glass roof even though you are not up for shopping!

4. Christ the Savior Cathedral

things to see in moscow | christ the savoir cathedral

A newer addition to the gorgeous Moscovite cathedrals and my grandeur neighbor during my years in the city Don’t let the young age of this building fool you. After the perestroika in the early 90s, the newly revived Russian Orthodox Church received permission to build a cathedral on this site. They did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church.

The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes as tall as the skies in bright gold and gorgeous paintings and decor! Bring a shawl to cover your hair to adjust to the local tradition.

Head to the back of the cathedral and you will find one of the most photographed bridges in Moscow, the Patriarshiy Most. This is the perfect spot to get a good view and photo of the cathedral but also to see the Kreml and Gorky Park from a distance. Or why not just enjoy a moment watching the river and its boats!

  • Get around Moscow with ease using the Hop On Hop Off boat and Bus ticket. 24, 48 or 72-hour tickets available.

5. Gorky Park

tourist attractions in moscow | gorky park

Cross the river and head to Gorky Park along the Moscow river. The most famous green area in town, similar to New York ’s Central Park and the weekend hangout for locals. There are many beautiful parks in the city, but if you’re only visiting for a few days, this is the unmissable one!

With fair attractions to entertain children, beautiful artificial lakes and gardens, and lots of outdoor activities, it’s a lovely place to relax. A place of rest in the middle of the metropolis. The area in front of the New Tretyakov Gallery & the Muzeon Park of Arts is actually one of my favorite oasis as a bit more quiet and peaceful than Gorky itself.

Why not spend some time in the museum to get a great tour of Russia’s history through art or just enjoy the art exhibition outside where local artists spend their weekends.

6. River Cruising

tourist attractions points of interest

One of the best ways to experience Moscow is from the Moscow River. There are many stops for the boats and one is just next to Gorky Park. See the city from another perspective – and turn the ride into a romantic one by taking the evening cruise. Moscow is magic during the night.

If you’re looking for a truly luxurious experience, take the Radisson Blu cruise – or the Erwin for a delicious seafood dinner. Both stop at Gorky or at the luxury Radisson Royal Hotel, set in one of the Seven Sister’s skyscrapers.

  • We use Get Your Guide when booking city tours and they offer a River Sightseeing Cruise seeing all the main tourist attractions in Moscow

7. Metro Hopping

unusual things in moscow | train station

First inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow subway system is one of the oldest in the world, and certainly the most beautiful. Started under Stalinist times, each metro station is dedicated to grandeur and oozing personality.

Visiting the subway stops is an attraction in and of itself, and Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, Kropotkinskaya are my favorites. Those surrounding the Red Square are also mesmerizing – in general, these are kind of like underground palaces.

Most of the signs at the Moscow Metro now have Latin letters, so it’s very easy to get around!Unfortunately, the trains are not as beautiful and pleasant as the stations but still, this is a true Moscow experience.  Take a guided tour of the 9 most beautiful Metro Stations including the award-winning art deco station. See more details here.

8. Arbatskaya & Artsy Moscow

place to visit in moscow | arabatskaya

Novy Arbat Street is one of the most touristy areas in the city, with lots of shops and cafés directed at visitors. When you walk a little beyond, you’ll find a different part of town, where the hip scene thrives because so many artists live in the area. Just follow the small streets with fewer tourists!

9. Moscow State University View

moscow unique things to do | university

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings hosts the main building of the Moscow State University, one of the most prestigious colleges in Russia – and the one with the best view.

Although this is a little outside the city centre, the sight from above is more than worth it, with the nearby fountains and park and then the whole of the city behind them.

10. Russian Market

where to shop in moscow | russian market

If you love to visit markets wherever you go, Moscow has one of the most impressive ones in the world – the Izmailovsky. You can easily take the metro here and feel like you’ve been transported to another time.

This place was first built in the 16th century and retains the look of an old fairytale, with a lineup of colorful old castle. A lovely local experience beyond the confines of the bustling metropolis, where you can also try some delicious Russian barbecue.

Here, you’ll find beautiful souvenirs at great prices.

Off The Beaten Track Moscow

unique moscow things to do | graffiti

Once you’ve covered the most touristic spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer – and the places below will also be full of locals! Moscow is a city for hipsters, full of trendy and arty spots where you can literally feel the creativity oozing! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend my sweat spots below!

11. Patriarshiye Prudy

moscow unique things to do | patriarshy prudy

This is my favorite area in the entire city! While Moscow is generally a very noisy metropolis, Patriarch Ponds is far quieter, yet such a vibrant place. This is a very hip and trendy area making you think you are rather in Paris than in Moscow. Here the streets are narrow and full of chic eateries and clubs to see the local crowd.

A little bohemian and with an air of peace you won’t find anywhere in the city this is a great spot to spend an afternoon with your thoughts.

12. ArtPlay

museums in moscow | artplay

Barely 15 minutes away from the city center you’ll find the artsiest Moscow district: ArtPlay. For decades, this block was a factory, but it was renovated to become a hub for the arts not too long ago.

Now, you’ll find it’s full of exhibitions, showrooms and art schools – and some of the most creative people in town. Writers, painters, and young hip people use ArtPlay as a rendezvous, and you can feel the creative energy here. The industrial design with modern interior decoration is also a feast for the eyes!

13. Shopping Local Designs

moscow sightseeing | shopping district

If you’re into design, both international and local, you’ll find lots of cute things at Patriarshiye Prudy. Department store Podium Market is also a great spot for shopping, as a department store everywhere in town, with lots of local and international brands. There’s one in the Four Seasons Hotel next to Red Square. My favorite Moscow mall is Tsvetnoy Central Market, a cool spot with great brands, lots of inspo, and even a cute café!

14. Moscow City

modern skyscrapers of moscow

Like many other great capitals of the world, for the past few decades, Moscow has hosted a super modern area full of modern skyscrapers – Moscow City. With a completely different vibe than the rest of town, it’s like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressively tall glass buildings. Here, you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, such as Ruski and Sixty they are perfect spots for dining or enjoying a glass of wine with a view. There are also a relatively new shopping mall with lots of international brands called Affimall!

Wine, Dine, and Party in Moscow

view of moscow from ruski

Gone are the gloomy Moscow days – cold as it might be in the winter, Russia’s capital is a place for the senses. Great food and drinks abound – and the clubs are hot, too!

15. Where to Eat in Moscow

where to eat in moscow

Moscow is a great metropolis where people love to dine out, and there are endless options for delicious food. The flavors are as diverse as you’d expect from a big city, with options of fine dining and little hipster eateries.

  • For traditional Russian flavors, I can’t recommend Café Pushkin, Dr. Zhivago, and Turnadot enough.
  • When looking for international cuisines, Italian is always the way to go, and my local favorite is Probka.
  • Fine dining is best done among the clouds at White Rabbit, with European flavors.
  • As for the hip spots, you can spend a full day just eating around trendy places, from burgers to Asian fusion.

More Dining Options

  • Patriarshiye Prudy offers a lot of small and classy spots with cool concepts, like breakfast restaurants I Love Cake and Fresh.
  • For dinner, I love the NYC experience of Saxon & Parole, and the wonderful trendy Pins, with its delicious food and drinks.
  • For delicious Asian food head to CutFish.
  • Lastly, there’s a recent revival of food markets in Moscow, offering lots of great choices of international flavors at affordable places.
  • Don’t miss out the Vietnamese food stand at the Danilovsky market, and everything at Usachevsky!

16. Rooftopping

things to do in moscow russia | city scape

Big cities deserve to be seen from above, having a cocktail among the clouds. These are my recommendations for rooftop bars in Moscow.

  • As I mentioned in the Moscow City section, Sixty & Ruski are two of my favorites, overlooking the newest part of town.
  • White Rabbit and its fine dining is also a lovely place for a fun dinner looking down on Moscow.
  • O2, in the city center, has an advantage above all others: amazing views of the Red Square.
  • Buono, above the Radisson Royal Hotel, might be the most romantic rooftop hotel in town, with its candlelit setting.
  • Also on the Radisson stands the Mercedes. It’s a luxurious and posh experience with delicious cocktails.
  • The Sky Lounge offers a peculiar experience, mixing an old Soviet building with futuristic additions.

17. Moscow by Night

must do in moscow | moskva river

Party the night away! The city is full of bars everywhere, but there are some areas where you’ll find more than others.

  • Patriarshiye Prudy has lots of hip and small clubs and great bars, including the super fun private club Clava, which has a great vibe and people from all walks of life.
  • For more hipster style bars, Red October is the place to go.
  • Streak is a summer favorite, with a lovely terrace to catch a beautiful sunset – plus, their mozzarella bar is delicious.
  • At night, Red October lights up with clubs everywhere, including the cool rooftop one Gipsy.
  • Jagger is also a great spot during summer with a more relaxed vibe in garden setting.
  • For the traditional Russian luxury experience, go to SohoRooms, a whole other world including all-night go-go dancers.

There are so many things to do in Moscow at night and during the day, you definitely need several days to explore this exciting destination.

Moscow is a must-see city, a city like no other ! I hope you will enjoy this Russian metropolis as much as I did!

These places look so awesome! Moscow is truly a beautiful city

Very good article, you have explained so nicely. Russia has always been a part of history and its good to know about much more about architecture and other things, wish i could see the inside of façade

Thanks for sharing such a nice article. You have very beautifully explained everything that one need for a trip to Moscow.

Nice article. Love the hidden gems and graffiti art, would love to visit Artplay. Thanks for a comprehensive guide to Moscow!

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here we can find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers.

Your article is good and meaningful .

Thanks for sharing about ArtPlay district, we didn’t know about it and it looks amazing 🙂 Hopefully there’ll be a second time in Moscow, we visited last May and really liked the city!

Wonderful stuff! I’ve been to Moscow, but not properly – it’s a long story lol!

Anyhoo, my next thing is to fly from Berlin to Moscow and then travel from there to Beijing via the Trans-Mongolian / Trans-Siberian train. Now, if only I could just find the time …!

I hear Moscow is very beautiful at night. I hope to get out there one day. A friend of mine went to St. Petersburg and had a great experience. Despite all the tension we see on the news with Russia and other Countries like the U.S. I wonder what the sentiment is with Russians and foreigners visiting their country for tourism. Especially Americans.

that looks like quite a beautiful place. 🙂
