Overall great experience Loved being on the water and we got very lucky with the weather Great mix of relaxing, snorkelling and exploring and night lift at the islands The boat was sufficient and enjoyed the amount of space to sit and relax on bean bags! Our CEO A was fantastic and made the trip!

I thought the trip was amazing and I will definitely be booking another trip similar again. I have also recommended it to many of my friends. The only disappointment regarding the trip was the guide. As he was fairly new he didn’t give any history about any of the islands we visited as his knowledge was very limited. I feel if it was a local guide they would have a better understand and knowledge of the spots we visited. This by all means didn’t ruin the trip. I can’t wait to book my next one!

A Guide to Sailing in Thailand

Known for fusion cuisine and turqoise coastline, Thailand is home to many amazing sailing experiences around its islands

Thailand ’s yacht-charter scene sets sail from the county’s largest island: Phuket . Pinch yourself – because the topaz waters in the surrounding Phang Nga Bay stay warm all year round. The best news? Thailand has over 1,400 other islands scattered across miles and miles of ocean – and only a handful are inhabited. The rest are the domain of macaque monkeys and Andaman parakeets. Make one of them your home from home as you sail around Thailand and its many islands.

See other coastal charms around the world by booking one of Culture Trip’s multi-day sailing adventures .

What to See and Do in Thailand

An aerial view of Similan Islands from a famous viewpoint in Phang Nga, Thailand

Coral Island – a short sail south of Phuket – does what it says on the tin. Anchor offshore beyond the reef for snorkels with nudibranchs and lionfish. Seeking solitude? Coral Island hosts just one rather fancy resort – after day-trippers return to Phuket, the island’s three beaches are all yours.

Shop for far-out souvenirs in the warm night air at Phuket Old Town’s Chillva Night Market. The bazaar’s vibe is boho bling where you’ll find street eats, handmade jewellery, fried insects, silk textiles and cold beer, flogged from repurposed shipping containers.

The Best Mooring Locations in Thailand

A pool area in a luxury hotel in Phuket, Thailand

Royal Phuket Marina is by far the hottest yachting hub in Thailand. The harbour hosts restaurants, co-working spaces and regular regattas – plus scores of yachts from single-day explorers to 35m (114ft)-long superyachts. It’s little wonder the marina holds the prestigious 5 Gold Anchor Award from the Yacht Harbour Association. Need a mooring? Call VHF channel 79 or book one of the 100 berths online. As Phuket is the yacht-charter capital of Thailand, you’ll find dozens of tiny marinas, restaurant tie-up docks and yacht-friendly islets nearby – such as Ao Po Grand Marina, which leads directly onto the northern islands of Phang Nga Bay and the safe anchorage of Ao Chalong on Phuket’s southern tip.

Where to Eat and Drink in Thailand

A plate of Pad Thai noodles with seafood and nuts on the table in Thailand

Phuket sits at the cultural crossroads of Thailand. The island has welcomed Chinese, Malay, Portuguese and French influences – with each group imparting their recipes, too. Dishes are generally laden with seafood, pork and Thai spices. These include gaeng som , a sour tamarind curry with fish paste and o-aew , a thirst-quenching jelly dessert containing watermelon and shaved ice. Among the most polished addresses is seafood at the Trisara Resort. Expect a Michelin-rated medley of market-fresh amberjack paired with fresh greens from the restaurant’s organic garden – all elevated into time-honoured “Thai Mama” recipes. Rawai seafood market isn’t for the faint-hearted, however – point-and-order at thousands of bubbling aquarium tanks containing giant clams and tiger prawns. An adjoining restaurant will fry up your seafood purchase.

Where to Get Groceries in Thailand

Villa Market near Royal Phuket Marina is where yachties shop for at-sea essentials and cocktail treats. Every international bite – from Bertolli olive oil to Alpen muesli – is readily available from 9am to 9pm.

Key Annual Sailing Events in Thailand

The King’s Cup Regatta – which takes place in Phuket each December – is the most prestigious in all of South East Asia. Count on up to 100 big boats competing in a week of fast sailing around the southerly islands of Phuket. These include Koh Lon – a secluded beachy gem where swings dangle from coconut trees.

Climate and Weather in Thailand

Gentle tides, warm winds and a sandy seabed render Phuket as Thailand’s year-round cruising destination – where the dry season from November to April is best for novice sailors. Northeasterly winds promise dry spells and gentle breezes, although sunny days become scorching by April. More serious sailors select the wetter season from May to October. Southwesterly monsoons usher up to Force 6 winds, with rainy squalls followed by intense heat. That said, there’s always safe sailing in Phang Nga Bay down to the Phi Phi Islands.

How to Get to Thailand

An aeroplane flies over Phuket Airport over the Mai Khao Beach in Thailand

Phuket airport is the intercontinental hub for the yacht charter scene in Thailand – with direct flights from Melbourne, Moscow, Manchester and Mumbai. The airport approach highlights the allure as jets descend over an aquamarine sea, then land just past the golden sands of Mai Khao Beach. Marina and yacht charter options are within an easy 20-30 minute drive away.

Why choose Intrepid

thailand sailing trip

Experienced skippers

Our skippers have years of experience sailing the high seas. There’s no one better to show you the ropes (literally).

See the best of your destination by land and by water.

Best of both worlds

These sailing vacations aren’t confined to the ocean blue. There’s plenty of time scheduled on land to see the sights and check out the local culture.

We make safety a priority on each of our sailing trips.

Safety first, always

Our yachts are well looked after and regularly maintained and on day one, the captain will also conduct a safety demonstration.

You don't need sailing experience to enjoy an Intrepid sailing tour.

No experience needed

If you'd like to pick up some sailing skills, your skipper can show you how. If not, just relax, kick back on deck and soak up some ocean breezes.

We strive to use travel as a force for good. That’s why we choose to give back to the communities we visit, carbon offset all our trips and take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. We’ve been officially certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid Travel, you can rest assured you’re travelling to improve the planet.

Sailing highlights by country

A beach with white sand and turquoise water on the Phi Phi Islands, Thailand

Explore the unforgettable islands of Thailand

From the famous landscapes of Phang Nga Bay to the pristine beaches of Koh Phi Phi (and all of the remarkable islands in between), a sailing adventure through southern  Thailand  promises to produce some of your favorite travel memories ever. Relax on golden sand, take a dip in sparkling turquoise waters and cast your eyes upon natural wonders you’ve only ever seen photos of.

Woman kneeling next to a sea lion on a beach on Isla Isabela, Galapagos

Island hop your way through the Galapagos

There are some destinations in this world that were made for sailing, and the  Galapagos Islands  is one of them. Whether you want to spend your time spotting the islands’ diverse array of wildlife (think spiky marine iguanas and giant turtles) or simply relaxing on the boat with a drink in hand as the Pacific Ocean goes by, a boat tour around the Galapagos is sure to be one for the highlight reel.

A collection of pastel colored buildings on the coast of Naples in Italy

Get lost in the magic of Italy’s coast

Sailing your way down the  Italian  coast is guaranteed to be a unique adventure you’ll never forget, thanks to a variety of stops featuring pastel villages clinging onto rugged cliffsides, scattered ancient ruins from a lost empire, and tantalizingly blue waters you want to get lost in. From wandering through olive groves to laying out on pebbled beaches, cruise the sparkling Mediterranean at your leisure.

A boat cruising the turquoise Adriatic Sea in Croatia

Sail the Adriatic Sea around Croatia

On a trip to  Europe ,  Croatia  is a must-see, but when figuring out how best to explore this Mediterranean country, sailing is the way to go. Whether you want to wander through medieval towns, lose yourself in sparkling blue waters, explore lesser visited treasures or indulge in this epic country’s traditional cuisine, you’ll be in utter paradise from the minute to step foot onto your own private yacht – all aboard!

thailand sailing trip

In  Europe , we like to go classic. A single-hulled, 50-foot yacht gives you a taste of traditional Mediterranean sailing, not to mention it looks pretty spiffy in pictures too. A typical Intrepid vessel may come with three twin/double cabins, as well as a couple of single berths. You’ll have a recreation lounge, kitchen, three shared bathrooms and plenty of deck space for lazing around and looking fabulous.

thailand sailing trip

When it comes to sailing in  Asia , catamarans are the way to go. They’re smooth, comfortable, and nimble enough to reach those out-of-the-way cays and little island inlets. The twin hull means there’s plenty of space to stretch out –perfect for those balmy evenings and lazy afternoons. Most of the catamarans in our fleet have four twin/double cabins, three shared bathrooms, a galley (that’s nautical talk for kitchen) and a small living area. There are even kayaks and paddleboards for those that want to get a little active (and bean bags on deck for those that don’t!)

Intrepid sailing boat in Sardinia

Sailing COVID-19 requirements

Sailing faqs, do i have to help sail the boat.

You don’t have to lift a finger if you don’t want to (unless you need to turn the page of your novel or eat a grape). But if you’d like to learn the ropes, that’s fine too. Your expert skipper can teach you everything you’d like to know – from tying knots to unfurling the sails.

How much time is spent off the boat?

There’s about a 30/70 split between land-based and water-based activities on our Asia sailing trips. In Europe this is closer to 50/50 however, some evenings will be spent in port or a marina. Much of this depends on the weather conditions. There are usually at least a few hours each day spent exploring ports, trekking the surrounding areas or relaxing on beaches. Of course, depending on location, there will always be the chance to wine and dine at the local hot spots.

What will my fellow travelers be like?

We have travelers of all ages and nationalities sailing with us. Approximately 60% of our travelers are flying solo, followed by a mix of friend groups and couples. The minimum age of travelers on our trips is 18, or 15 if accompanied by an adult. We don’t have a maximum age as we believe those choosing a sailing adventure are like-minded regardless of age.

Who decides the rooming configuration?

Your skipper will allocate rooms on arrival to the boat. Single travelers will be paired up with another passenger of the same sex as per the gender marker on their passport, and this may mean sharing a double mattress or twin mattresses side by side.

What are the sleeping arrangements like?

This is our most common question! People are often hesitant about the idea of sharing a double mattress with another traveler of the same sex. Sailing boats tend to be very compact (we use real sailing boats), but the close-quarters nature of this travel is part of the adventure.

Sleeping quarters are designed to utilize the minimum amount of space in order to keep the communal areas as big as possible. In fact, lots of travelers end up sleeping out on deck under the stars, as it’s warm and there’s no air conditioning on a sailing boat.

Our boats have a mix of double, twin (two separate beds or two separate mattresses side by side) and bunks.

Can I get a cabin to myself?

Single supplements are available on all trips, subject to availability. A single supplement is normally twice the regular price, however, where trips have inclusions such as meals there is a slight reduction in the supplement price. If you are interested in having a single supplement, please contact us to check availability and price.

Do the cabins have ensuites?

On many boats, bathroom facilities are shared, however, some boats have ensuites in each cabin that allow two people to share one bathroom. Our monohull yachts in Europe will have no more than two cabins sharing a bathroom. Most of our catamarans have four cabins and four bathrooms, however, these bathrooms are shared between travelers and crew. Check the Essential Trip Information of your trip for more specific details about your boat. Fresh and hot water is available for showers, and toilets are either electronic or hand-pump.

Will I get seasick?

Seasickness comes in a variety of forms. Common symptoms include fatigue, uneasiness, dizziness, and headaches. The majority of these symptoms usually subside after taking some time to adjust (usually a few hours to a day). Tylenol or Advil can help ease the transition. Heavy seasickness, characterized by vomiting, is uncommon, and it can be treated using medication. There are also a number of other self-management techniques you can try – such as sitting out in the fresh air, drinking ginger tea or watching the horizon.

For more information about beating seasickness, click here .

What will I eat?

All Asia and Galapagos Island trips feature an onboard chef who will prepare three delicious meals each day, plus snacks. In Europe, we operate with a trip kitty* (that everyone contributes to) because there’s so much great local produce to taste in each place that it makes a lot of sense to buy food at each stop! This kitty will cover some of your food and beverage costs. On all our trips, there will be an opportunity to enjoy a meal at a local port – we’ll be able to show you where all the good tavernas are. Please check your Essential Trip Information for more specific details.

*See below for information about your trip kitty.

What about alcoholic drinks?

You are welcome to drink on board - in fact, nothing enhances a sunset more than cold local beer or a glass of wine. Alcohol is BYO (bring your own), so make sure you buy what you need before departure. Some of our boats have alcoholic drinks on board that are available for purchase at local bar prices. Drinking water is free of charge.

How much luggage should I take?

Due to the compact size of the boats and the sometimes rocky nature of a sailing trip, it is advisable that you bring fabric/canvas luggage. It’s a good idea to pack light as there will usually be a gap between the boat and pier. While the skipper or a fellow traveler can give you a helping hand, you’ll need to be able to lift your bag onto the boat.

What should I pack?

Sailing trips are a little different to regular group tours. There’s a finite amount of space on the boat, so it’s best to leave the grand piano, pet llama and foldout four-person mattress at home. The same goes for bulky suitcases, ten pairs of shoes and the surfboard.

This isn’t designed to be a comprehensive packing list, but it’ll get you thinking like a real sailor.

  • A medium-sized fabric bag that can be flattened or stored easily
  • A small day pack for shore excursions
  • Some sandals or deck shoes that can get wet
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Seasickness tablets (just in case)
  • Bathing suit (don’t worry about the snorkel and fins – we provide those)
  • Waterproof camera (for those sweet underwater shots)
  • A light weatherproof jacket (just in case of high seas or seasonal showers)

For a more detailed packing list, please refer to the Essential Trip Information of your trip.

What are the arrival and departure times?

These will vary from trip to trip – be sure to check your Essential Trip Information for more specific details. Some sailing trips will head out to sea on the afternoon of the first day. Others will remain in port overnight, however, we still ask that you join the trip at the requested time, as the skipper will need to deliver a welcome and safety briefing before organizing a visit to the supermarket to buy provisions for the trip. All travelers will have an input into the provisions, and this will be purchased from the kitty*.

Please note that due to sailing being a heavily weather-dependent activity, sometimes itineraries may need to change. We recommend allowing an additional night at the beginning and end of the trip to ensure nobody misses any onward flights.

*see ‘What is a kitty’ for more information on your trip kitty.

What is a kitty?

A kitty is a fund or pool of money that all travelers can choose to contribute to at the beginning of a trip. It’s not compulsory however, we’ve found pooling the group's money in one place makes it easier to arrange non-included group meals and tips where necessary. You'll usually eat most breakfasts and some lunches and dinners onboard the boat, so it's best to buy supplies from a nearby supermarket or grocery store at the beginning of each trip. For meals off the boat, our skippers will suggest locally-run restaurants that specialize in local produce and delicacies.

What is the maximum group size?

The maximum passenger capacity on our boats changes depending on which country you are sailing. Here’s a quick breakdown, but you can always find more specific details in the essential trip information of each tour.

Greece: 11

Croatia: 8

Montenegro: 8

Some of our stops while sailing in thailand, koh kudu yai.

We explore the breath taking area of Phang Nga bay, where lushly forested limestone cliffs tower above emerald water. After visiting one of the hidden lagoons (`hongs`), we drop anchor nearby a deserted beach and enjoy our private get away! It is a perfect location to start our sailing holidays in Thailand!

A gate to yet another paradise beach in Thailand.

Each yacht has a dinghy which we use to explore a hidden lagoon . While we are totally surrounded by high limestone walls overgrown with lush vegetation we still see the blue sky above! Unforgettable!

Sailing in Thailand offers such views daily!

Railey Beach, Krabi

At the white sands of Railey beach we go for it all: visiting Thai restaurants, walking under great cliffs and enjoying the shade of palms. A sunset with towering islands in the distance is a great start for a night spent at the beach bars sipping local beer.

Arriving with our yacht to this beach in Thailand cannot be more enjoyable!

The entrance to one of the hidden lagoons is guarded by incredible forms of limestone towers. Upon entering this magical place a large lagoon opens up with mangrove forests encircling it. This is a trademark of sailing holidays in Thailand. It`s only waist-deep so jump around and swim on your back enjoying the views and feeling like in another world !

Hongs are only accessible with boats. We have our own yacht while sailing in Thailand!

Phang Nga Bay

On all the islands that we stop at vegetation is lush and jungle alike. Short hikes to the view points are an attraction in itself! Thick groves, tall trees, mangroves, ambiance of birds, monkeys and who knows what else make you feel like a true explorer !

Additional activity while on a sailing holiday in Thailand.

Koh Phi Phi Don

Anchoring our yacht nearby the coral reef gives us access to outstanding snorkeling spots. In the village nearby we can dine on fresh seafood, have a stroll to monkey beach or enjoy a freshly made Mojito in one of the beach bars, admire fireshow… possibilities are endless.

A must see point on a sailing trip in Thailand.

Snorkelling and Diving in Thailand

Snorkeling around this area is on a world class level. Nearby most of our day and night moorings there is a coral reef! These are always truly colorful and full of life! At some places we spot Sergeant – Major fish which can be hand fed!

If the group wants we organize a half-day introductory scuba diving course . You will be taken on a longtail boat to the place where you most likely spot turtles, stingrays and even small sharks! Professional instructions will dive with you twice to introduce you to this wonderful activity.

Snorkelling in Thailand is best done from a yacht!

Watch how we hand fed Sergeant Major fish on our last sailing trip to Thailand.

Koh Phi Phi Ley

After all the local tourist boats leave, we arrive to `The Beach`, the highlight of our sailing holidays in Thailand. We go onshore with our dinghies and enjoy the magical setting of a hideaway paradise with stars above. Night snorkelling reveals tons of glowing plankton, stars above illuminate the cliffs around and everyone is thinking: ` can we stay here forever ?`.

Sailing in Thailand will put your world upside down!

Koh Khai Nui

Nearby a tiny island with a single restaurant we lay back and watch the clouds pass by. The time does not exist, it`s an evening for simplicity, being present and admiring the natural beauty of Thailand. In the meantime our food arrives and once again we are mind-blown with the richness of tastes and colors on our plates!

Our last lunch stop on saling in Thailand holiday!

Some miles west of Phi Phi, there is the Shark Point. Except harmless Tiger Sharks, which grow up to 2 meters long, we snorkel in an exceptionally colorful reef where big turtles are often to be spotted!

You can meet them while snorkelling in Thailand!

Regatta Day while sailing in Thailand

On the last day of sailing in Thailand we put our newly learnt skills into action. All crews compete against each other to be the first at the finish line. Excitement guaranteed!

Most Frequent Questions

Who will be on my yacht.

Around 50% of the people who come to my sailing holidays are coming solo. 25% in groups of 2 and 25% in the group of 3 and more. As there is a few yachts I take special care in matching people to the crews. I even wrote a little blog post about that:  Matching Yacht Crews for Sailing Holidays

HOW DOES THE EXACT ITINERARY LOOK LIKE?

At Naleia we plan as we go according to the weather conditions and all crews` moods. There is a set of places that we can visit, but the order and exact choice is only made each morning after verifying the weather conditions. Leave planning at home! We live for the moment!

WHY THAILAND SAILING TRIP IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN NALEIA SAILING TRIPS IN EUROPE?

The yachts in Thailand are 3-4 more expensive to charter. Simple supply vs demand (unfortunately…). However, people say the experience is worth every penny!

WHEN CAN I CHECK-IN ON THE FIRST DAY AND WHEN DO WE ARRIVE TO MARINA ON THE LAST DAY?

Check-ins are always at 16h00. You are naturally most welcome to come earlier and say hello! Your yacht is being cleaned for you at this moment so we need to wait a little. On the last day we arrive to our marina in the afternoon: 15h00-18h00. We need to check-out and leave the yachts before 09h00 on the next morning.

WHICH MARINA WILL YACHTS DEPART FROM?

All yachts are leaving from Yacht Haven Marina.

HOW MANY YACHTS WILL THERE BE IN THAI FLOTILLA?

We expect to sail in a cosy 2-3 yachts flotilla.

Aerial view of Racha Noi Island in Phuket Thailand in summer.

To the South of Phuket there is a 100 nautical mile string of inshore islands, stretching from Koh Phi Phi to the Malaysian border. They offer tranquility and many opportunities for exploring.

East and South East of Phuket Island, the fabulous Phang Nga Bay, Krabi and Phi Phi Islands, together form an area of about 500 square miles. Here you will find sheltered sailing in all seasons.

The entire area is dotted with impressive lime stone formations, honeycombed with caves and fringed by mangroves. Three major rivers plus a couple of smaller ones flow in the Phang Nga Bay.

This is very much catamaran country, one could cruise here for many months exploring creeks, rivers and drying out in the mangroves. A typical feature are the hongs, high limestone islands which have collapsed in the middle, leaving a landlocked lagoon. Several of these lagoons are accessible by dinghy or kayak at low tide through caves.

Further attractions are Railey Beach, said to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and the well-known Phi Phi Islands offering impressive surroundings as well as great nightlife.

North and North West of Phuket one finds the Similan Island Group. They offer the best Thailand sailing trips, Thailand sailing vacation, bareboat sailing Thailand including best diving and snorkeling in Thailand.

Thailand Island Hopping From Phuket: Sailing with Intrepid Travel

My 7 days spent island hopping from Phuket in Thailand was one of the most relaxing weeks of my life. Crystal clear, turquoise warm water, colourful sea life with an abundance of sea turtles, powder white sandy beaches backing onto dense jungle and limestone karst rocks, perfect pink-orange sunsets… Thailand is quite possibly the perfect destination for an island hopping adventure.

Home to over 1400 islands, Thailand has many picture-perfect beaches and tropical islands on offer. It’s also a great destination for nature and adventure lovers with everything from waterfall trekking to diving and rock climbing available for those who don’t want to spend their days lazing on perfect beaches, dipping in and out of the ocean when it gets too warm…

You could, of course, arrange a D.I.Y Thailand island hopping trip , but in this article, we will be talking specifically about island hopping from Phuket on a Thailand sailing holiday with Intrepid Travel .

If you’d rather organise your own Thailand island hopping adventure instead of taking a sailing trip, then you may prefer reading my 10 day Thailand Itinerary.

On an organised sailing trip like the one I took with Intrepid travel , you can fully relax as you sail between the best islands in Thailand – beautiful remote beaches and islands that are off the beaten track. Of course, you’ll still get to visit the most popular islands and beaches but there will be no need to constantly move from hostel to hotel. Each afternoon you’ll return to the boat and spend the evening eating fresh seafood as the sun goes down.

You might be surprised by how affordable a Thailand sailing holiday like this actually is…

Things to Know About Island Hopping from Phuket

When is the best time go island hopping from phuket.

The best time to go Island hopping would be between November and February. During these months, the weather is warm and dry without being sweltering. The weather gradually gets hotter until May when the monsoon season starts and runs until October. However, even during the rainy season, you’ll get plenty of sunshine broken up my heavy downpours.

How to get to Phuket

Phuket has an international airport so it’s easy to reach Phuket. You can then organise a taxi or a transfer to Phuket centre at an affordable price.

D.I.Y Island hopping from Phuket vs Phuket Sailing Trip?

The advantages of a DIY trip are that you have complete freedom about where you travel and how long you spend in each place. It’s also a great opportunity to sample the local nightlife.

The advantages of taking a sailing trip are many. Firstly, its possibly the most relaxing way of travelling. It’s a great way to guarantee you’ll make some travel friends and it’s the best way to see a LOT in a short period of time. You’ll get to more remote beaches and see off-the-beaten-track islands.

Sometimes, if you can find a budget sailing trip , it can actually work out cheaper than taking lots of day trips on a DIY island hopping trip.

What to pack for island hopping in Thailand?

Here are a few backpacking essentials you’ll definitely want to pack for your island hopping Thailand holiday.

Swimwear . This kind of goes without saying! Make sure you have a few swimsuits with you as you’ll spend most of your time in the water.

Quick Dry Towel . Since you’ll be in and out of the water a lot, it would be a good idea to invest in an antibacterial, sand-free, quick dry towel. I love these fun ones from Dock and Bay.

Underwater action camera . There are some incredible snorkel and dive spots in the islands near Phuket and you’re going to want to catch it all on camera. I have a Go Pro 6 which I love. It takes incredible quality photos and videos and is very easy to use. However, if your budget won’t stretch to this, you can also get super cheap equivalents which take reasonable photos for under $50 like this one . For more advice about buying cameras, read about the best cameras for backpacking .

Kindle . The great thing about island hopping is that you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy relaxing in a hammock with a book (oh yes did I mention the boat has a hammock..?!) Take as many books as you like by storing them on a Kindle . The new Kindles are even waterproof so perfect for boat trips…

Snorkel . If you take a boat trip, snorkels will usually be provided but you may prefer to take your own snorkel set .

Sarong or beach cover-up. Whilst Thailand is a conservative country and you will need to cover up if you are visiting temples, it’s not so strict on the islands. But you’ll still need to throw something over you swimsuit if you leave the beach.

A Sun Hat. Never underestimate the strength of the sun as it reflects off the water and burns you to a crisp. Wear plenty of sunscreen and wear a big hat to cover you face and neck. I love this one…

Anti-theft luggage . Luggage which is reinforced against theft will give you some peace of mind when you travel around Thailand, especially if you take any night trains. You can get some really pretty ones now so you don’t have to sacrifice style for safety. I like this one and this one .

Bug spray . There are a lot of bugs in Thailand so make sure you plaster yourself in DEET and wear long sleeves in the evenings.

Reef safe sunscreen . Did you know that most sunscreen is damaging to the delicate coral and to sea creatures? But there are environmentally friendly sunscreens out there such as this one . This is so important when you will be in and out of the water every day.

Water to go bottle . The tap water is not safe to drink in Thailand and buying bottled water is both costly (when it adds up) and bad for the environment. Investing in a Water to Go bottle will save you money as it filters the water as you drink making the tap water (or even river water) safe for drinking. You can get a discount by quoting GLOBETROTTERGP at the checkout. Get yours here . Or read my water filter bottle review .

Dry Bag . A dry bag is so useful as you can put all your valuables and photography equipment in it and know it won’t get damaged if it takes a splash! Try to get one which floats too like this one .

For a more detailed list of things to take, check out this S o utheast Asia Packing List .

Island Hopping from Phuket with Intrepid Travel

Who are intrepid travel.

Intrepid Travel is a company which organise small group adventure travel tours worldwide. Whilst most of their trips are land-based, they do now offer marine based sailing trips including this 7-day sailing trip from Phuket.

What I love about Intrepid Travel is that they really care about the destinations they visit. They plough as much money as possible back into the communities that they visit and are dedicated to providing ethical travel experiences often in off-the-beaten-track destinations.

Group sizes are kept small so it has a personal feel compared to coach tours which I am not a fan of! It’s a great way to make some new travel friends and see a lot in a short time. I’ve travelled with Intrepid Travel a few times now, most recently on safari to Kenya , and I do feel they are one of the best tour companies for solo travellers . I will be talking about a few alternatives (Including one for keen divers) shortly so keep reading…

Thailand Island hopping Itinerary with Intrepid Travel

On a Thailand Sailing trip with Intrepid Travel, you will spend your days sailing between islands and snorkel spots. Whilst transiting between locations, you can enjoy reading a book in a hammock or catching some rays on the sun deck.

The catamaran will make frequent stops so you won’t get bored. You might be kayaking through caves, swimming in emerald lagoons, meeting wild monkeys, visiting virtually deserted beaches that most day tours don’t get to or stopping at a reef to snorkel straight from the boat.

Whilst most of your meals will be cooked for you by the talented chef on board, you will have the occasional meal and even a few drinks at a bar on the islands.

Some of the stops are a little longer allowing you time to explore beach towns such as those at Railay beach and Koh Phi Phi Don where you can go shopping, take a short hike to a viewpoint, book a massage or just relax in a beach bar with a cocktail.

Highlights of this Thailand island hopping sailing trip

Here are a few personal highlights of my Thailand sailing holiday…

Railay Beach

Railay is not an island but it feels like one as it is only accessible buy boat being cut off from mainland by dense jungle and limestone cliffs. It actually has not one but 4 different beaches you can visit, each beautiful in its own way. The town itself is great to explore and you may want to consider booking a massage here like I did. It’s also a great location for adventure seekers and is one of the best places in Thailand for rock climbing.

Make sure you visit the ‘penis cave!’ This bizarre little cave is completely covered in symbolic wooden phallic ornaments. Women attend to pray for their fertility. It’s really quite surreal…

Koh Phi Phi Don

One of the most popular places in the islands off the Andaman coast of Thailand. Sadly it’s popularity does mean it gets a little overcrowded and expensive at times. But it’s a great stop for a few hours to explore the town, visit the gorgeous beaches or take a hike up to the viewpoint where you can look down on two beautiful beaches separated by a strip of dazzling white sand. Check out this guide for other things to do on Phi Phi Island .

Phang Nga Bay

You may recognise this stunning bay with its dramatic limestone karsts jutting vertically from the emerald water as a backdrop for several films. It’s most famous for being featured in the James Bond film ‘Man with a golden gun.’ This area is great for exploring caves, lagoons and has excellent snorkelling opportunities.

Easily accessible from Phuket, this island is actually fairly quiet as Thai islands go. But visit quickly as it is gaining popularity! This is a great island to go if you want to escape the crowds (at least it is for now…) It’s also a great location for anyone who wants to dive. If you are a diver, you may want to check out Live Aboard boats in Thailand .

Chicken Islands

Chicken Islands are famous for the huge rock formation looks like a chicken – although I think it looks more like a turtle with it’s head out of the water! There are some great spots for snorkelling in this area.

At Koh Phanak, you’ll have an opportunity to get out in the kayaks to explore little caves, some leading to perfect shallow lagoons. You won’t find too many tourists here so you’ll often get the caves and lagoon to yourselves.

Koh Hong Lagoon

At Koh Hong, you’ll find a ridiculously beautiful lagoon with shallow emerald water and perfect beaches. Great for swimming and kayaking!

What was the Intrepid boat like?

The Intrepid boat is a catamaran and although it’s quite small (I prefer cosy,) it’s actually very comfortable. My favourite thing was the hammock at the front of the boat. So nice to swing over the ocean as you read your book in the sunshine.

What was the food like?

The food was incredible and our chef was an absolute genius in the kitchen. Often he would cook fresh fish he caught that day. I’m not very good with spicy food but he always made sure there were different options and pointed out which ones were okay for a chilli-wimp like me…

What were the cabins like?

There are a mixture of twin, double and quad share cabins. You’ll be matched with someone of the same gender to share a room. There’s not a lot of space so I’d recommend only bringing a small soft bag with you. Intrepid can arrange for you to leave the main luggage securely on mainland.

I was lucky and ended up with a double room to myself!

What were the Intrepid crew like?

The crew were brilliant. They were so friendly. Our skipper was British and the rest of the crews were local with minimal English skills but they made sure we were really well looked after at all times.

How many people will be on the boat?

The maximum number of passengers is 15. There were 8 of us on my trip for the first 4 days and for the last 3 days it was just 4 of us so we had a lot of extra space. (And more opportunities to use the hammock!)

What is included on an Intrepid sailing trip?

Accommodation, snorkelling and kayaking activities are all included. Most meals are provided although there is one evening where you eat in a little town. 6 breakfasts, 4 lunches and 4 dinners will be included in the cost so you really won’t have to spend much else.

Flights and pre-departure accommodation will need to be organised and financed by yourself. But during the trip, I only paid for the occasional drink or massage when I was on the islands.

Where to stay in Phuket before and after departure

There is no shortage of hotels in Phuket for you to choose from. But I’ve made the process a little easier by finding 4 fabulous hostels and hotels for any budget…

If you have the time, plan a few extra days in Phuket, there’s loads to see and do from relaxing on beaches to visiting Thailand’s beautiful temples .

Shoestring . Even on a shoestring budget, you can stay somewhere really nice. The Lub D hostel at Patong beach in Phuket is super modern and stylish offering both dormitory and private rooms. They also have a lovely pool as well as a games room, cinema room and even a boxing ring for learning some Muay Thai!

Budget. The clean, bright airy rooms at the Signature Phuket Resort are a great budget option with double rooms starting from $40. It has a brilliant pool and outdoor area.

Affordable luxury. Despite the affordable price tag, the Amari Phuket is pretty luxurious with its infinity pool, spa and private beach. You can even have an outdoor bath on your verandah overlooking the ocean, filled with rose petals!

Luxury. If there’s one hotel in Phuket which just oozes class and style, its The Surin Phuket . Set on a beautiful beach with pristine white sand and turquoise water, this hotel is a little further away from Phuket town so if you want to enjoy some peace and quiet before you go island hopping from Phuket, then this is the hotel for you.

Alternative sailing trips and companies for island hopping from Phuket

G adventures.

I’ve travelled extensively with G Adventures including 3 land-based tours that travelled through Thailand. I’ve also taken a sailing trip with them in the Galapagos. (Check out my budget Galapagos cruise review here.) They do a very similar island-hopping sailing trip from Phuket which you can check out here .

I’ve actually compared G Adventures with Intrepid in this article; G adventures vs Intrepid Travel . But despite a few minor differences between the companies, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend either company.

Live Aboard

If you want to do a lot of diving on your Thailand sailing trip then Live Aboard is the company for you. They are one of the biggest Live aboard companies with a great reputation and lots of different styles of sailing trip available at different budgets. Many will include several dives each day.

So hopefully you found this Thailand island hopping guide and Intrepid sailing review useful!

No matter how you choose to do it, island hopping from Phuket is bound to be a dream holiday but I personally think a sailing holiday is a brilliant way to see a lot in a short time and reach the more remote islands. When the cost of day trips, accommodation, food, drink and ferries between islands is taken into consideration, it doesn’t actually cost you much more.

“Explore the culinary delights of Thai Food aboard your Phuket Yacht Charter!”

Whether you’re a foodie or not, be prepared to eat your way from one location to the next. Our experienced Thai cooks onboard will mesmerize you with their culinary skills. If you don’t believe us – just read any one of our TripAdvisor reviews .

Ingrained in the Thai culture is a sheer love of food. Unlike many other societies that we know, Thais are honed into where their food comes from. The journey from source to plate is minimal. Fresh ingredients are key. A perfect blend of spices and herbs – law.  A variety of dishes for each meal – a standard. Sharing – integral.

One of the greatest selling points we have is our food . Unlike many other charter destinations, Thai food is a cultural experience that far exceeds any expectations and one you can’t help but fall in love with!

If Thai food isn’t your thing, no worries. Our cooks are very accomplished at cooking many Western dishes, as well as catering to the taste buds of our younger guest.

Include Some Diving?

“ get in some scuba diving before everyone else”.

As we wake up in new locations each day, why not take advantage of the peace and tranquillity and take a morning dive. Explore the stunning Coral reefs as all the fish and fauna wake up as well. With our Dive guides, explore the underwater realm before anyone else turns up.  Add a little extra thrill to your sailing holiday. Start the day as you mean to go on. If you’re a keen diver, experienced or fairly new, you’ll love having the dive sites to yourself.

For the members of your group that do not  Scuba Dive , no problem, we always like the additional surface support, so why not jump in with us, and follow our dive, as you  snorkel  along the surface

It’s not all about sailing – choose from our array of extra water activities to take full advantage of your Phuket Sailing Tour

Maximize your experience of each location we visit. Our captains and crew will provide suggestions on how best to enjoy each site – be it using one of our kayaks , SUP Paddleboards . There’s no better way to explore all the hidden lagoons and caves.

Why Choose a Sailing Catamaran?

“here at phuket sailing tour – all our yachts are sailing catamarans”.

For many people, the word ‘Yacht’ relates to a single-hulled boat (aka. Monohull). With this idea, there may be a preconception that all yachts sway a lot in the water. Although this is true to some extent – a charter catamaran is a lot more stable in the water as a result of its two hulls. There is no denying the advantages of a sailing catamaran .

Here are a few reasons why:

While many ‘cruisers’ prefer to opt for the traditional monohulls, for a charter, there is no denying the advantages of a sailing catamaran.

Here’s a few reasons why:

  • Catamarans sway and swing a lot less than Monohulls ,therefore seasickness is hardly ever an issue
  • Especially for families with children Sailing Catamarans are much safer than Monohulls. Because they don’t heel and rock it is almost impossible to fall overboard. Catamarans are very stable and have natural buoyancy, making them just about unsinkable.
  • SCUBA Diving and Sailing! Only Catamarans offer ample flat space to gear up for scuba diving and offer a comfortable and safe entry into the sea.
  • Catamarans sail faster than Monohulls, you will have less travelling time and more time to enjoy at the islands
  • Because Catamarans don’t need a keel the yachts draft is shallow, allowing the boat to anchor in lagoons and shallow sandy spots near reefs giving their guest the comfort and luxury to go snorkeling or diving right from the yacht’s swimming platform.
  • Why shower in the bathroom if you have a fresh water shower on deck. Enjoy the incredible view while showering in the fresh air. On a Catamaran this is the norme
  • During your sailing cruise you want to spend most of the time in the shade on deck relaxing at a comfortable spot. Catamarans have much more and especially flat and even deck space. It is easy to put up awnings to create shade and there is ample space for cushions and bean bags to provide comfortable seating for all guests aboard a sailing catamaran.
  • Cabins are larger. Communal areas are larger. It’s your very own floating hotel! For those who are new to sailing, or want to just spend time with family and friends, a charter catamaran is the perfect choice. This is why we at Sailing Phuket only use catamarans.
  • Last but not least, most Sailing Catamarans have two engines. Should one break you’ll have a spare in the event it is needed

So, take a look at Our Yachts, and choose the one you can see yourself on!

7 amazing cruise itineraries to book in 2024

I don't know about you, but each year, as the weather turns cold, I start daydreaming about getting out of Dodge — or, in my case, Pennsylvania. My mind wanders to cruises that will take me to places where the temperature is warmer, but I also take a hard look at the (exceptionally lengthy) list of places I'm longing to visit.

After digging through what's new for 2024, I've come up with a shortlist of sailings that I think are noteworthy. They range from a standard Bahamas voyage with a new twist and an extended Alaska sailing that includes a foray across the Arctic Circle to more far-flung destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dream on, dear reader, and add these to your list of 2024 cruise itineraries.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Seabourn's 'Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas' itinerary

Last year, the Australia and New Zealand cruise region gained momentum following the pandemic shutdown. In 2024, the hardly populated Australia region of The Kimberley is gaining popularity. Luxury cruise brand Seabourn will be offering a series of six 10-night voyages between Broome and Darwin on expedition vessel Seabourn Pursuit during what will be early winter in the southern hemisphere.

The line's " Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas " will take passengers to places along the coast few passengers are able to visit to see the stunning teal waters and horizontal waterfalls of Talbot Bay, sample wines in the Hunter River Region and check out nature preserves in Wyndham.

Details: The first sailing, from Darwin to Broome, embarks on June 12. The final voyage, from Broome to Darwin, departs on Aug. 1. Prices start from $6,134 per person ($613 per person, per night), double occupancy, for the July 2 cruise. All accommodations are suites with balconies.

Celebrity's 'Best of Japan' and 'Vietnam and Thailand' cruises

The number of voyages in Asia was trending upward notably prior to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought cruising in the region to an extended halt. And it's once again on the rise. Following that curve, Celebrity Cruises will be running new 11- to 13-night Asia sailings in 2024 on two ships — Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Solstice — that bring stops in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand.

What's notable about the offerings is that they will aim to immerse passengers further into the destinations by including overnights in a total of 11 ports across all itineraries. That means more time to explore Hanoi's Old Quarter as the sun sets, indulge in nighttime gastronomy in Hong Kong, visit one of Bangkok's many markets, or learn why Osaka is known for street food.

Details: Celebrity Millennium's " Best of Japan " cruises run from early mid-March to early October. At press time, the least expensive fares — for a 12-night sailing — start from $1,330 per person ($111 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. It travels round-trip from Yokohama and visits Hiroshima, Pusan and other ports, including Osaka, where the ship will overnight.

Celerbrity Solstice's Vietnam and Thailand cruises kick off in mid-January and run through March. The ship will resume them again in the fall of 2024 and run through the winter season. Prices start from $1,255 per person ($105 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. The voyage sails from Hong Kong to Singapore with stops in Da Nang and Koh Samui, plus overnights in Hanoi and Bangkok.

SeaDream's 'Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles' sailing

Here's one to put on your radar if you're looking to book — but not necessarily sail — in 2024. It's a new Mediterranean itinerary that doesn't start up for nearly three more years, in 2026. The SeaDream routing brings stops at seven ports that are rarely visited by cruise passengers. During the seven-night voyages, there will be calls at Primosten, Croatia; Cesme, Turkey; Cetubal, Portugal; and Kythira, Kythnos, Syvota and Tinos, Greece — making these sailings unique and well-suited to anyone who loves the region but who's looking for new places to experience.

SeaDream's small ships, each of which carries just 112 people, are able to reach locales about which passengers on megaships can only fantasize. Couple that with excellent service, and you'll be visiting the Our Lady of Loretto statue in Primosten, touring the Cesme Castle and lounging on stunning Greek beaches from a home base that puts you squarely in the lap of luxury.

Details: An itinerary that includes three of the seven new ports is the 11-night " Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles " itinerary from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, departing on Aug. 8, 2026, on SeaDream I. Prices start from $10,399 per person ($946 per person, per night) for a room with a porthole view.

Holland America's 'Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice' Legendary Voyage

Alaska is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the vastness of untouched wilderness, the wildlife it houses and adventurous pursuits it provides. (Think whale-watching, hiking on glaciers and salmon fishing.) However, Holland America 's Westerdam is hosting a 28-day sailing that's anything but your standard cruise to the Last Frontier .

Passengers will visit the usual Alaska ports, such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, with scenic sailing through the Inside Passage, past Hubbard Glacier and to Glacier Bay. But they can also expect less-common stops at places like Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage (with an overnight) and Homer. Plus, about halfway through, this cruise crosses the Arctic Circle — a rite of passage for many travelers.

Details: Holland America's 28-day " Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice " cruise — one of the line's Legendary Voyages, known for longer durations and a unique mix of port calls — sails June 9-July 7, round-trip from Seattle. Inside cabins start from $5,299 per person (about $189 per person, per night).

Silversea's summertime French Polynesia cruises

Another consideration for future travel is Silversea Cruises , which is featuring its first full-summer season in French Polynesia in 2026. Silver Whisper will offer two immersive itineraries, including overnights, across 17 voyages between April and September.

Passengers can choose seven-night sailings that visit idyllic favorites like Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine and which also include overnights in Bora Bora. Or, they can cruise for twice as long by selecting a 14-night voyage that calls on the same ports as the seven-night option but with Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva, Atuona and Tahuata added.

Details: Silversea's seven-night voyages begin April 6, 2026, and start from $5,650 per person ($808 per person, per night) for an ocean-view cabin.

The line's 14-night sailings start on April 20, 2026. Fares start from $10,450 per person ($747 per person, per night) for ocean-view accommodations.

New Bermuda voyages on Carnival Venezia

Beginning in May of 2025, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Venezia will sail a series of eight four- and five-night cruises to Bermuda from New York. These itineraries are notable because the line is aiming to increase its presence there but also because the style of the ship is new to even most of the brand's most dedicated passengers.

In 2022, Carnival announced its Costa by Carnival concept after revealing it would be transferring ships from its Costa sister brand to the Carnival fleet. Now, when travelers visit the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse or check out the island's renowned pink-sand beaches during a sailing on Carnival Venezia, they can enjoy both the Italian style of the ship and Carnival's fun atmosphere and high service standards.

Details: Voyages kick off on May 22, 2025. Prices start from $429 per person ($108 per person, per night) for an inside cabin on a four-night cruise departing Sept. 18, 2025.

Disney Cruise Line's Lighthouse Point itineraries

Disney Cruise Line 's new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , a private destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is set to open in June with a three-night preview sailing on June 6 aboard Disney Magic. Following the initial voyage, the line will run regular three- to seven-night voyages to Lighthouse Point on Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

The island will feature a dedicated family beach and water play area, an arts and culture pavilion focused on Bahamian culture, 20 family cabanas, an adults-only beach and a selection of shore excursion options.

Details: Prices for itineraries that include Lighthouse Point start from $624 per person ($208 per person, per night) for a three-night cruise on Disney Magic. The cruise departs Nov. 5 and sails from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
