One of the most magical ways to explore Alaska’s expansive coastline, stunning snow-capped mountains, mystic fjords, lush rainforests, awe-inspiring glaciers, and protected wildlife is by sea. And that’s precisely why so many people who visit Alaska do so via a cruise. Plus, it’s the best way to experience the iconic Inside Passage, the most popular route for cruise ships departing from Seattle and Vancouver from May through September. The key to planning the perfect adventure is finding the right cruise for your personality, budget, and preferences.

We’ve gathered cruises in all size categories (from a couple of hundred passengers to nearly 5,000), as ship size is often one of the biggest factors when selecting a cruise. We’ve also called attention to cruise options that do an impressive job of showcasing nature, offering local experiences , providing endless onboard entertainment, or catering to foodies or luxury travelers.

While Alaska is certainly the star of this show, the ship you experience it on will make all the difference to your vacation. (Spoiler: Always spring for the oceanview room with a balcony on Alaska cruises, because you’ll be treated to once-in-a-lifetime sights along your entire voyage!)

Final Verdict

Methodology, best overall cruise : windstar cruises.

Because of their small, yacht-like size, Windstar Cruises ships grant unparalleled access to Alaska’s glaciers and fjords; other ships can’t squeeze into some of these special places.

All-inclusive option includes WiFi, unlimited drinks, Signature Expeditions program offers expert guides who give lectures and take guests on intimate excursions

Only 312 passengers

Each cabin is a suite; there are no interior cabins

Ship was reimagined in 2021, with additional dining experiences, a new World Spa, and infinity pool

Fewer entertainment options than on larger ships

When it comes to experiencing the splendor of Alaska, your cruise is only as good as the direct access it offers to this region’s beauty—and Windstar Cruises delivers access like no other. Because of its dainty size, guests are treated to unique experiences, like anchoring right in Misty Fjords and Kenai Fjords, which is something you’d have to do on a shore excursion if you were on a larger ship with another cruise line. For an even closer look at Mother Nature’s impressive work, from icebergs to whales, book a kayak or Zodiac Signature Expedition with their incredibly knowledgeable guides.

In 2021, the Star Breeze went under renovation to provide guests with new features: additional dining options (such as a Spanish small plates restaurant from Anthony Sasso, one of the youngest chefs to be recognized by the Michelin Guide), a spa and fitness center, an infinity pool, and more outdoor deck areas. Chefs make a point of shopping locally in each port and bringing their bounty back to the ship to incorporate into the cuisine, such as reindeer and venison sausage, birch syrup, and, of course, King and Sockeye salmon.

Best Ship Renovation : Celebrity Cruises

The Celebrity Millennium, launched in 2000, has recently undergone complete modernization, which includes luxury staterooms, enhanced technology, and renovated restaurants and lounges.

Immersive dining at Le Petit Chef, where augmented reality intersects with luxury cuisine, private verandas, complimentary fitness classes, plus unlimited access to the Persian Garden and complimentary dining at Blu

Autism-friendly cruising, including sensory-friendly films and toys, and dietary options

Accessible staterooms with grab bars, roll-in showers, and wider doors

2,218 passengers put this squarely in the mid-size ship category

You won’t find the over-the-top party-like activities of larger ships (which could also be a plus)

If you’re passionate about the finer things in life, Celebrity Cruises may very well speak to your soul. The Sky Suite in the Retreat, for instance, includes a long list of curated amenities (e.g., a shore excursion credit, premium drinks, wi-fi, tips, and onboard credit), endless views, a Personal Retreat Host, private dining, and exclusive spaces, like the Retreat Lounge and Sundeck. And onboard experiences range from Macallan and Jack Daniel’s tastings to Riedel crystal workshops that show how different shapes and qualities of a Riedel glass change the taste of wine.

The Millennium offers Edge series staterooms with Infinite Veranda—at the touch of a button, your entire living space becomes the veranda, which means you can walk right out to the water’s edge. And 99% of the staterooms on Celebrity Edge have king-size beds, featuring Celebrity eXhale bedding and Cashmere mattresses.

Best Small Ship : Oceania Cruises

Oceania cruises introduce Alaska to guests by offering local experiences in partnership with native tribes for a more meaningful connection to the area beyond sightseeing.

Two specialty restaurants (no extra charge),  WiFi, and free and unlimited soft drinks replenished daily in refrigerated mini bar

Onboard menus feature local Alaskan delicacies, such as Halibut, King Crab, and Alaskan blueberry pancakes

Impressive guest-to-staff ratio: maximum of 656 guests served by 400+ officers and crew

4 open-seating restaurants, 8 lounges and bars, and a casino

Not all staterooms feature private verandas

Built in 1998 but fully refurbished in 2019, Oceania Cruises’ Regatta dazzles guests with bejeweled chandeliers in the Grand Dining Room, fresh color palettes, and new furnishings in the public spaces, plus new everything in the suites and staterooms. Between the gentle rocking of the ship and the Ultra Tranquility Bed, you’re sure to sleep like a baby.

When you’re not off exploring Alaska’s many wonders, keep busy at the casino, take in an after-dinner production of Tuxedo (a fresh take on the Rat Pack) or Gatsby’s (a 1920s-era musical romp) or chill out and choose a book from the English-style library with 2,000 options.  Book a spa treatment or work out in the Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center, play nine holes of golf on the putting greens, shop the three boutiques, and unwind, help yourself to afternoon tea with all the accouterments at 4 p.m. daily.

Best All-Inclusive Ship : American Queen Voyages

You’ll never feel nickeled and dimed on American Queen Voyages because everything you want—from guided tours to drinks—is already included in the price.

All-inclusive sailing with no extra charge, infinity pool and multiple hot tubs

Menus crafted from local ingredients

Each room comes with binoculars for wildlife spotting

Ship just debuted in November 2021 and its first sailing with American Queen Voyages was May 2022

Hefty price tag

No musical or stage productions onboard

Say hello to our little friend, the 186-passenger Ocean Victory, from American Queen Voyages. While this vessel may be small in stature, she’s big on value. The all-inclusive sailing includes one pre-cruise hotel night, ground transfers, unlimited guided tours, and beverages, open bars and lounges, unlimited food, in-room dining, WiFi, bicycles, walking sticks, and daily live entertainment and enrichment. And speaking of unlimited food, you’ll be treated to five-course dinners along with 180-degree panoramic views. All 98 cabins face out (no inside cabins), and 68 of those feature step-out balconies.

As part of the American Queen Voyages expedition experience, the line has partnered with Dr. Michelle Fournet, an acclaimed acoustic ecologist and leading expert in the communication of North Pacific humpback whales. As such, hydrophones are used onboard Zodiacs to listen to the voices of Alaska’s whales in real-time. Guests will also learn about and participate in whale tracking through fluke identification by uploading their own photos from the vessel to a scientific database following their seasonal movements.

Best Ultra-Luxury : Seabourn Cruises

With its intimate size and maneuverability, world-class dining, social atmosphere, and high-end amenities, Seabourn Cruises is a luxurious way to explore America’s Last Frontier.

Complimentary WiFi for all bookings, The Grill restaurant features a menu curated by famed chef Thomas Keller, complimentary fitness classes

Max guest capacity: 450

229 luxury suites, 90% have verandas and all are ocean front

In-suite amenities include a fruit basket replenished daily, a bar with complimentary wines or spirits, nightly turndown service, and Molton Brown bath products

Tipping is neither required nor expected

Ship was built in 2009 and has had no renovations

Eleven days exploring the Inside Passage and Alaskan fjords with only 400-ish other passengers aboard a luxurious ship with plenty of onboard activities? That’s exactly what you’ll get on the Seabourn Odyssey. Enjoy the magical moments spent exploring the far end of the Misty Fjords on Zodiac, learn more about the local wildlife and geology during lectures with the Expedition Team, and kayak along Hubbard Glacier.

There’s plenty to do on board, too, including making use of the two swimming pools, five whirlpools, and Dr. Andrew Weil's spa and wellness program. Not to mention a card room, casino, library, observation bar, and beauty salon. There are several options for onboard dining (aside from complimentary in-suite dining), including a fine dining option, The Grill by world-renowned chef Thomas Keller, and an open-kitchen style option for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Best Traditional Cruise : Holland America Line

Holland America Line’s Koningsdam offers everything long-time cruisers appreciate, from a comfortable size and price point to onboard activities and numerous dining options.

Live cooking demonstrations and fine dining events, Rolling Stone Rock Room live music venue and B.B. King’s Blues Club

Recently refurbished in 2018

2,650 guests, which makes it a mid-size ship that’s easier to navigate

Club HAL for kids ages 3 to 17 included

No live daytime music

Don’t have a lot of time for your Alaskan vacation? This “best of” 7-night itinerary is focused on the region’s iconic Inside Passage, which gives passengers an efficient taste of all the area’s most photographed and talked about sights. Plus, Holland America offers more access to Glacier Bay National Park and has more departures featuring Glacier Bay National Park than any other cruise line.

The Koningsdam boasts 912 balconied accommodations, which means 69% of the ship has rooms with a private veranda view. You’ll also find massage showerheads, magnifying mirrors, terry bathrobes, Egyptian cotton towels, Elemis luxury bath products, and fresh fruit (upon request) in your stateroom. Anglers will enjoy the cruise line’s Savor My Catch program, which brings ocean-to-table dining to a whole new level. Plus, guests can catch their own fish during shore excursions and have it prepared and served on board.

Best New Ship : Princess Cruises

Princess has been sailing Alaska for over 50 years, and with six ships, five wilderness lodges, and its own domed rail car, this cruise line knows the region well.

Cook My Catch dining program for guests on select fishing excursions, puppies in the Piazza brings sled dog puppies onboard for guests to cuddle, adults-only wellness and relaxation deck

Ship just launched in March 2022

Princess ships feature Ocean Medallion wearable technology for a seamless, contact-free cruise experience

One of the most affordable Alaskan cruise options

Gratuities and specialty restaurants not included

The Discovery Princess had her naming ceremony in April of 2022, so she’s a brand-new addition to the line’s fleet. As such, technology is a big part of the experience. Cruise guests will receive a free Medallion device with a complimentary lanyard, which allows you to do things like open your cabin door, track onboard purchases, find family and friends, locate venues, and check daily activities.

You’ll find three main dining rooms, plus a pizzeria, gastropub, Italian restaurant, chop house, and Mediterranean bistro. Or, kick things up a notch with a Chef’s Table Lumiere experience of multiple courses with wine pairings. Spend your time listening to live music in the Crooners Bar, exploring cocktails from around the world at Good Spirits, and relaxing at the jazz club. Be sure to check out SeaWalk, a walkway that cantilevers off the side of the ship and has a glass bottom so guests can see below and above.

Best Large Ship Cruise : Royal Caribbean International

Dry docked in 2021 for a routine refurbishment, this Quantum Class ship holds 4,905 passengers and truly offers something for everyone.

Recreational activities like a flowrider surf simulator, iFly skydiving simulator, and rock climbing wall, high-tech virtual balcony views, and North Star, a glass observation capsule that rises 300 feet above sea level for bird’s eye views (additional cost)

Luxury shopping options, such as Cartier, Kate Spade, and Michael Kors

Adventure Ocean Kids Programs

A robot will code your favorite cocktails at the Bionic Bar

Formal nights with dress code (or you can choose to dine at a more casual venue those evenings)

The best part about a mega-ship, like the Ovation of the Seas? It’s literally impossible to be bored given the number of things there are to do, eat, and explore. For instance, there are 16 dining options (including Jamie’s Italian by chef Jamie Oliver), 10 bars and lounges, myriad activities and shows, a spa and fitness center, pool tables, and table tennis. Add to that guest lectures, outdoor movie nights, live music, an arcade and casino, theme nights, bumper cars, archery, and dance and sushi-making classes. Heck, you might just need a vacation after this vacation!

Interior staterooms are budget-friendly options with plenty of space and thoughtful touches, or you can upgrade to ocean view, balcony, or suite categories for some extra perks (like marble bathrooms with a tub and two sinks). And there’s no better spot for taking in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier than the North Star observation deck.

Your Alaskan cruise is ready to set sail, so which ship will you choose for your adventure through the Last Frontier? For a small ship experience with an all-inclusive mentality, we love Windstar Cruises—it’s your best bet for getting up-close and personal with nature and having access to expert guides. For sailing through Alaska in the lap of luxury, choose Seabourn Cruises, and surround yourself with naturalist experts and fine dining restaurants. And if mega-ships are intriguing, Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas has literally everything you could ever want in a floating hotel. (The only risk here is that you might enjoy the ship’s myriad amenities so much that you’ll forget to check out Alaska.)

We evaluated over a dozen Alaskan cruises before selecting the best in each category. We considered various elements like the cruise line’s reputation and quality of service, ship design and architecture, and notable ship amenities (e.g., swimming pools, entertainment, technology, access to nature experts, etc.). We also reviewed each ship’s cruise itinerary , dining and wellness options, and the types of experiences and excursions available to guests. In determining this list, we evaluated numerous customer reviews and considered whether the cruise line has collected any accolades in recent years.

The Best Cruise Lines for Sailing Alaska (2024)

When it comes to cruising, there’s nothing quite like sailing to Alaska. The natural landscape is rugged and untouched. Seemingly every turn of the ship is met with dramatic views. And sailing alongside massive mountains dwarfs even the biggest cruise ships.

Best cruise lines to Alaska

In short, if you haven’t visited Alaska, then you don’t quite know what you’re missing. No matter how many pictures or videos you watch, they won’t do the place justice.

When it comes to visiting, there is also no better way to do so than with a cruise. Given that roads are far fewer in this part of the world, you either need to fly or travel by boat to get to most places. On a cruise, you can sail along taking in the natural surroundings while visiting multiple ports in one trip — all while also enjoying the comforts of the ship. Wake up one day and you’ll see a glacier. Then you’ll see Juneau, Skagway , Sitka , and more spots, all in one voyage.

Over the past several years, interest and the number of cruises to Alaska has risen steadily. These days dozens of ships across multiple lines provide an array of options. While any cruise can take you to Alaska, however, not all lines are the same.

That’s why we’ve rounded up the best cruise lines for an Alaskan cruise depending on several different situations that might apply to your vacation.

First, there are some important things to know about the criteria for picking the best lines.

In This Article...

What to Know About Picking the Right Line for Alaska

Not sure which line is for you? Don’t worry if you’re overwhelmed by options as there are a lot out there. It’s helpful to keep a few things in mind.

Most Lines Sail Similar Routes: First, one thing that makes choosing a line simpler is that you don’t have to worry much about itineraries. Not all are the same (there are some ships that sail longer routes that take you deeper into the state), but for most cruises, you’re going to see similar or the same ports. Whereas Caribbean trips may have dozens of different port options including all throughout The Bahamas, Mexico, and more, Alaskan cruises have far fewer. So whether you sail Royal Caribbean or Carnival, Norwegian or Princess, you’re likely to have a roughly similar route.

Price: For some people, money is no object. For the rest of us, it is a major factor in selecting a cruise. The good news is given the fewer ports and routes, no matter what you spend, you’re likely to see similar sights during your cruise. However, there can be significant price differences based on ship, cruise lines, and time of year. Cruises departing before June and after August see lower prices. If budget is important to you, sail during these times.

Amenities/Ships: While price can be a big difference in your cruise to Alaska, perhaps where you’ll see the biggest variance is with the amenities and ships offered. These days cruise lines have put all sorts of different ships in the area, from nearly new mega ships with all the latest bells and whistles to older ships that carry far fewer people and generally have less to do. If you want to ride go-karts on the ship while spotting whales or just want a low-key time on a smaller ship taking in the sights, you can do it all.

Best Overall: Norwegian Cruise Line

best cruise line to alaska 2024

We want to be clear: There is no “wrong” cruise line to sail Alaska. Given the beauty and experience, we’d take a row boat if it meant getting to visit. That said, depending on your specific wants for your cruise, some will be a better fit for you than others. In the case of Norwegian Cruise Line, we think it’s the best all-around option.

Norwegian has put a focus on Alaska for a long time. In the 2024 season, the cruise line shows four ships sailing regularly with another (Norwegian Spirit) making visits on longer trips. Ships include bigger vessels like Bliss and Encore, as well as older and smaller ships like Jewel and Sun. So no matter if you’re wanting all the latest and greatest amenities, activities, and restaurants, or if you want the cruise to be more about the scenery, there is a ship for you. We especially like the observation areas on ships like Encore , which provide a beautiful sweeping view of the landscape while still being inside.

NCL also does a good job of offering a lot of options for cruises. The traditional 7-day round trip tour is well represented. Then there are routes that offer more time by cruising north for seven days before ending in Seward, Alaska and then offering 7-day return voyages south. There are also sailings from both Vancouver and Seattle, offering more options.

Prices also run the gamut. Make no mistake that NCL is often more expensive than other lines. However, if sailing during the shoulder season you can find deals to match any budget. That includes a 9-day sailing aboard Norwegian Jewel round trip from Seattle for $499 per person in October. A 7-day cruise aboard Norwegian Bliss can be had for as little as $549.

Bottom line is that whether the itinerary, the price, the ship, or the amenities is most important to you, NCL has something to offer any traveler to Alaska.

Best for Families: Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean ship in Alaska

A trip to Alaska with kids is something they won’t forget. But there are special challenges when traveling as a family. Namely, kids will want lots to do no matter how jaw-dropping the scenery is where you’re sailing.

That’s why we consider Royal Caribbean to be the best cruise line for Alaska if sailing with children.

The line sails four ships in 2024 to Alaska — Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, and Quantum of the Seas. All Royal Caribbean ships are known for pushing the envelope of what’s possible on a cruise ship, but Ovation and Quantum are newer and larger vessels that have a lot for kids to do.

This includes everything from bumper cars to Flowrider standing waves (in heated water!) to rock walls to RipCord by iFly (a skydiving simulator). There are even indoor pools available so that swimming is an option even in Alaska.

Brilliance and Radiance of the Seas are older and smaller ships but there are still kid-friendly options like putt-putt and rock walls to climb and arcades. And all ships have dedicated kids areas where children can play while being supervised and parents can enjoy the cruise on their own.

With these four ships you have options from both Vancouver and Seattle, including cruises with land tours added on.

Best Value: Princess

best cruise line to alaska 2024

Is value important to you, then our top pick is Princess. The cruise line sails a large number of ships (we count seven in 2024) to Alaska. That large supply may be why the line offers some of the best prices for Alaskan cruises we’ve seen.

Remember, so much of the reason for cruising this part of the world is the ports and scenery. If that’s what is most important to you and all the lines offer similar itineraries, then it makes sense that you can save and still get a wonderful experience.

That’s not to say the cruise line is less desirable — far from it. We’ve personally sailed Princess (though not to Alaska) and would put it up against any major line in the industry. They simply offer some of the cheapest fares you’ll see.

Princess, for example, offers 7-day round trip cruises from Vancouver starting at just $398 per person (before taxes and fees) for a week in May. Even some cruises at the peak season can be had starting at less than $600 per person.

If you want the best deals, it does seem that sailing from Vancouver runs less expensive than cruising from Seattle. Just keep in mind any transportation cost getting to and from the port before you choose which port to sail from.

Best Luxury: Oceania

Want to sail in luxury? You have a lot of options. If you want a big ship experience, NCL offers The Haven, which is an exclusive and higher-end area aboard some of its ships. Other lines offer a true small-ship experience, sailing the area with anywhere from a few hundred to a little over a thousand passengers. This includes names like Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Viking, and Oceania.

In our opinion, you aren’t going to go wrong with any of these choices. We selected Oceania because we think it offers the best mix of “affordable” luxury with shorter schedules. For instance, many of the luxury cruises to Alaska offer 14-day round trips. Oceania offers round trip cruises aboard Oceania Regatta lasting from 7-12 days, offering both longer cruises and some shorter ones to match any schedule.

You also don’t have to spend as much to have the luxury experience. While not cheap, trips aboard the Regatta start around $2,200 per person for a 7-day cruise. Other luxury brands can be considerably more for a similar length trip. And for that price, you get extras that you don’t normally see on mass market lines. This includes hundreds in shore excursion credit and a beverage package.

Meanwhile, you also get a small ship experience aboard. Oceania Regatta is just 593 feet long and with 670 passengers at double occupancy. If you’ve ever wanted to visit Alaska on a cruise but were wary of mega ships, then a luxury option like Oceania could be for you.

5 best luxury Alaska cruises for 2024

Janice Wald Henderson

Luxury Alaska cruises have a different vibe than posh sailings in balmy climes. Lounging poolside plays second fiddle to shore excursions showcasing the state's spectacular natural wonders. Onboard experiences are uniquely Alaskan; viewing glaciers and wildlife from your ship's spacious decks and listening to fascinating lectures from passionate expert guests overshadow trivia games and wine tastings.

The best Alaska luxury cruises also deliver the pampering luxe-lovers crave. Smiling servers will pass you mugs of hot chocolate while you gape at calving icebergs. Cashmere blankets await you in your suite, so you can stay warm and cozy on your private veranda while taking tail-flipping whale pics.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

On luxury lines, many excursions are complimentary. These riveting outings transport you far from crowded ports and touristy shops to pristine forests and lakes or to bucket-list adventures like dog-mushing, glacier-trekking and bear-viewing. Such outings would cost big bucks on premium or contemporary ships. Of course, the cost is folded into a luxury cruise's higher prices, but you'll likely see and experience far more when the activities are included in your fare.

If you're seeking unabashed luxury and thrills galore, try one of these five best luxury Alaska cruises for 2024.

Silversea Cruises

best cruise line to alaska 2024

Silversea Cruises ' newest ship, the 728-passenger Silver Nova , brings the outdoors in with abundant floor-to-ceiling windows, making the ship an idyllic ride for Inside Passage cruising.

Its seven-night Vancouver-to-Seward voyage visits every must-see port — including Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway — and also sails to the astonishing Hubbard Glacier. Silversea fares include most shore excursions, so you don't have to pay extra to immerse yourself in the best Alaska has to offer.

For instance, in Ketchikan, Silver Nova offers a whopping 12 complimentary shore excursions, such as a Hovercraft cruise with possible wildlife glimpses of eagles and whales, followed by a beach landing in the Tongass National Forest, or a ride on a fully enclosed adventure boat to a marine park for a scrumptious seafood boil with crab, shrimp, clams and mussels at Silverking Lodge. In Sitka, 11 included excursions run the gamut from a mountain hike to an alpine lake with a Champagne toast to a three-hour kayak paddle to a floating base camp.

On board, relish all-suite accommodations, butler service, complimentary sustainable caviar and alcohol. Among 10 notable dining opportunities, seven are complimentary. All gratuities are included. Best of all, this ship's asymmetrical design — new to Silversea — delivers phenomenal views from pretty much everywhere — even in glass elevators.

Silver Nova is offering weeklong cruises, sailing between Vancouver and Seward from May through mid-September 2024. Fares for the June 20 departure start at $4,950 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

best cruise line to alaska 2024

One of the best luxury Alaska cruise ships is the 746-passenger all-suite Seven Seas Explorer. It's one of Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' most glam ships, and you can pamper yourself on board for a week as you sail from Seward, Alaska to Vancouver, British Columbia. If you love opulence — think exquisite marble and crystal lavished everywhere — and a magnificent multimillion-dollar art collection, look no further than Seven Seas Explorer for your vacation home-suite-home.

Your cruise fare includes so many amenities, like round-trip air, most shore excursions, all specialty dining (don't miss Chartreuse and Pacific Rim), 24-hour in-suite dining, alcohol, airport transfers, gratuities and, my personal favorite, valet laundry service. The biggest suites come with even more perks, such as a one-night pre-cruise hotel and butler service.

Related: The 2 types of Regent Seven Seas Cruises ships, explained

In Alaska, count on many notable included excursions, like driving the uber-scenic Klondike Highway, feasting on freshly caught salmon at Liarsville Gold Rush Camp or visiting a sled dog camp (petting allowed). In Juneau, search for humpbacks and orcas on wildlife quests at sea or photograph the mighty Mendenhall Glacier from advantageous viewing points.

Ketchikan is totem territory; here, you can meet a Native American artist demonstrating not only how carvings are done, but the significance to their culture. Or visit a raptor rehab center where you can stare down a bald eagle eye to eye.

Seven Seas Explorer is offering seven-night cruises, sailing between Vancouver and Seward from May through mid-September 2024. Fares for a July 17, 2024, "Summer on the Frontier" cruise start at $6,799 per person.

best cruise line to alaska 2024

Is a week not enough time in Alaska? For more pampered vacation days and more time spent exploring the 49th state, choose the yacht-like, 458-passenger all-suite Seabourn Odyssey and its 11-night round-trip Vancouver voyage for your Alaska luxury cruise.

Although this is the ship's last summer with Seabourn (Seabourn Quest assumes this route in 2025), no shortcuts are taken for the final season fling. Service consistently excels. Count alcohol, Regiis Ova Caviar (a company co-founded by superstar chef Thomas Keller) and gratuities among inclusions. The crew pulls out all the stops for Seabourn's Caviar on the Ice, a complimentary deck party with — you guessed it — loads of caviar to eat and bubbly to sip. It's a riff on Seabourn's iconic Caviar in the Surf party offered in tropical climes and just as scrumptious.

Seabourn Odyssey's timeless design suits the country-club-ish ambience and makes for a cushy onboard experience. All suites but entry level provide private verandas. The ship offers eight complimentary dining venues plus 24-hour in-suite dining. If you like, enjoy the latter for dinner after a day of adventurous excursions; dishes will be served course-by-course. Passengers love the Club, the hangout for afternoon tea and nighttime dancing. Its outdoor terrace lures with two whirlpools and a plunge pool.

While not an expedition vessel, Seabourn Odyssey hosts about 14 experts on Alaska sailings, including academics, scientists and other wildlife experts. They guide the optional (extra fee) Ventures by Seabourn excursions, such as Zodiac, kayaking, hiking and catamaran tours. Highlights include a four- to six-mile hike through a rainforest past a glacial lake to Mendenhall Valley and kayaking to Hubbard Glacier. A professional photographer lectures and offers small-group workshops on how to capture perfect wildlife pics.

Note that this itinerary is longer than most (and Seabourn also offers weeklong sailings), delivering a far deeper immersion into the state's pristine and less-visited allures. For instance, visiting the Inland Islands, Endicott or Tracy Arm and Wrangell are unbeatable. The same goes for scenic cruising in Misty Fjords, with nearly incomparable beauty.

Seabourn Odyssey is offering seven, 10, 11 and 14-night cruises from May through August 2024. Fares for this June 17, 2024, 11-night round-trip Vancouver "Inside Passage and Alaska Fjords" cruise start at $7,799 per person.

Oceania Cruises

best cruise line to alaska 2024

While considered an upper-premium line, Oceania Cruises recently unveiled a novel program called simply MORE, adding many inclusions to standard fares, such as round-trip airfare, airport transfers, most alcohol and a $600 shore excursion credit per passenger. This program ups the cruise ante to luxury-level standards.

Not to mention, Oceania Cruises' ships are stunning, even an older one like the 670-passenger Regatta. Built in 1999, it underwent a major refurbishment in 2019. Expect public spaces in sky and sea hues and an abundance of timeless teak, stone and custom tile work.

Dining on board is major; all five restaurants excel and are included in the fare (even the fanciest dishes, like prime dry-aged Angus steak and Maine lobster). A complimentary afternoon tea is served daily, with four-tiered pastry carts, artisanal brews and a live string quartet performing.

To complete the luxury experience, book at least a concierge-level veranda (to add free laundry service, cashmere lap blankets, priority boarding and more to your list of perks). Book a suite for 24-hour butler service.

This 10-night round-trip Seattle voyage hits not just the usual stops of Sitka, Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. You'll also visit Victoria, British Columbia, for whale-watching, a city walking tour or outings to cider farms and wineries. Stroll the iconic Butchart Gardens, its winding paths ablaze with colorful blooms.

Explore beyond Icy Strait Point, where wildlife outnumbers the primarily Tlingit Indian population. Look out for grizzlies and bald eagles, learn about the Tlingit culture or combine a grizzly bear viewing opportunity with a humpback whale cruise.

If your questions about Alaska aren't answered ashore, onboard guest speakers, such as naturalists, passionately share knowledge about the region's history, culture and environment.

Regatta is offering six-, nine-, 10- and 11-night cruises from May through September 2024. Fares for this July 9, 2024, round-trip Seattle 10-night "Radiant Alaska" cruise start at $3,399 per person.

best cruise line to alaska 2024

While Viking falls in the (self-declared) upper premium category, most cruisers see the line's ships as luxury. Sailing in Alaska, the 930-passenger adults-only Viking Orion offers an elegant and spacious modern Nordic design.

Entry-level cabins offer a generous minimum of 270 square feet, including a private veranda. These cushy digs include a king bed, spacious bath with heated floor and anti-fog mirror, plush robes, turndown service and complimentary soft drink, water and snack minibar. Bigger, costlier accommodations come with complimentary welcome Champagne, a coffee maker and priority booking for shore excursions and restaurants.

The Spa offers complimentary access to its Thermal Suite, where guests can rejuvenate by alternating between a steamy sauna and a frigid Snow Grotto. Daily afternoon tea service is a treat in the gorgeous Wintergarden. It's complimentary, as are the ship's primo specialty restaurants.

Viking Orion's 10-night cruise between Vancouver and Seward includes scenic sailing of the Inside Passage and Yakutat Bay and a stop at rarely visited Valdez. There, enticing shore excursions include kayaking by Valdez Glacier; flying over glaciers, searching for wildlife in a helicopter; and a UTV (utility terrain vehicle, larger than an ATV) adventure through the Chugach Mountains to the Mineral Creek Canyon. One shore excursion is complimentary in every port.

Viking Orion is offering 10-night 2024 Alaskan voyages between Vancouver and Seward from May until early September 2024. Fares for this July 3, 2024, Vancouver to Seward 10-night sail start at $6,999 per person.

What is the Best Cruise Line for Alaska in 2024 (9 Areas Compared)

We compared cruise lines to Alaska in 9 key categories.

J. Souza

If you’re looking for the best cruise line for Alaska you may not realize just how many choices you have.

There are 75 cruise ships sailing to Alaska over the next couple of years.  And these ships represent 21 cruise lines.  Some are big and some are small.  Some are luxurious and some are budget-friendly.   It’s no wonder this question gets asked so much.

Cruise ships in port in Alaska

Choosing the best cruise line for Alaska is like trying to pick your favorite child. Ok, that’s not quite right. It’s more like asking someone “What’s the best car?”. Is there really a correct answer to this question? You can ask 10 people and get 10 completely different answers.

How we determine what is “best” can be drastically different just based on taste and preferences.  So, that is what we will address in this article.

Below we will compare the cruise lines that sail to Alaska and tell you which ones are best for different types of travelers.

Click here to jump straight to the comparisons of the best cruise lines for Alaska.

There’s been a resurgence of voyages to America’s last frontier lately.  And with more cruise lines offering cruises to Alaska the increased competition is great for travelers wanting an exciting getaway from the lower 48.

Related: What is the best cruise line for you?

Do you want to get up close to some amazing glaciers?  Do you want to see wildlife like whales, bears and bald eagles? Do you want to spend more time on land doing adventurous things?  Do you want to just enjoy the views from your stateroom’s balcony?

The answer to these types of questions and which Alaska itineraries fit your needs will determine which line is best for you.

After all, every cruise line has their own specialty and caters to a certain kind of traveler.

If you’re looking at cruises in Alaska, I hope you realize there isn’t a “bad” option. But in this article we will dive into the different cruise lines that offer cruises to Alaska and try to help you determine which cruise line is best for you . After all, this is your vacation you are planning, so it doesn’t matter if someone else thinks you’re vacationing wrong.

The Alaskan cruise season is short

You only have a limited window for taking a cruise to Alaska.  The season runs from April/May through September/October.  The very beginning and end of the season are usually the times you can get the best deals as well.  While June and July are right in the middle of peak season, it’s also when you are most likely to see the some wildlife.

Don’t be surprised if it rains during your cruise, especially if you go during the peak season, but that’s just part of Alaskan weather.  It rains about 200 days out of the year in this region of the world.  This sometimes means shore excursions will get canceled or postponed, so always have a backup plan.

Two main cruise itineraries for Alaska

best cruise line to alaska

Inside Passage : This cruise typically begins in Seattle, Washington or Vancouver, Canada and travels up the Inside Passage, stopping at various ports along the way. Ports of call may include Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay National Park, and Sitka.

An inside passage itinerary gives you a great overview of Alaska, seeing most of the important ports of call and  some great scenery along the way.  The downside is that it’s typically a round-trip sailing and can be repetitive on the way back.

Gulf of Alaska : This cruise is typically one-way and departs from Vancouver or Seattle in the south or Anchorage (Seward) in the north.  The cruise follows the Gulf of Alaska and ports of call may include Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, Hoonah, Juneau, Hubbard Glacier and College Fjord.

An advantage to this itinerary is that you get to see more ports of call, including the inside passage, and have more time in ports as well.   However, this also means you will have to take care of some of the flight logistics as you will have to fly from a different airport than you flew into.

Viking Ocean offers many one-way 10-night sailings that allow passengers to spend more time in ports.  Some begin in Seward and head south and some start in Vancouver and head northward.  A major advantage of these one-way trips is that you can experience more Alaskan ports.  So these types of itineraries are best if you want a destination heavy journey.

Depending on where you live the embarkation port might determine which cruise line to Alaska is best.

Only certain cruise lines can visit Glacier Bay

cruise ship at glacier bay on alaska cruise

Glacier Bay National Park consists of 3 million acres of land and over 1,000 glaciers, many high in the mountains.  Seven of these are known as tidewater glaciers that are slowly receding down the majestic mountains, and four of them are actively calving icebergs (when large chunks of ice break off) into the bay.

It is a magnificent thing to witness from a cruise ship.  In fact, most of the tourists that visit Glacier Bay National Park each year are cruise passengers.  But there is a limit as to how many cruise ships and which cruise lines can visit the bay.

A concession plan announced in 2019 limits the visits of cruise ships to two ships per day.  Cruise lines must be granted permission from the park authorities to carry passengers to this region.  Currently, these include Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Uncruise Adventures, Viking Ocean, and a few others .  This agreement will be in effect until 2030, so if you want to make Glacier Bay a part of your cruising experience you can look to book with one of these cruise lines.

Holland America Line and Princess Cruises make up a large part of cruise itineraries sailing to Glacier Bay.

Your cruise ship will spend 9-10 hours in Glacier Bay, during which a park ranger will be onboard to offer insights and answer question along the way.

Ship size limitations

Bigger does not mean better when it comes to cruise ships sailing to Alaska.  Larger cruise ships with a gross tonnage of 150,000 or greater cannot dock at certain ports because of their size.  In fact, certain fjords and passageways are inaccessible to some of the mega-ships.

If you’re sailing on one of these larger ships just realize that you may have to skip some of the smaller ports or will have to travel further on land to get there.  For instance, Norwegian Bliss (a 167,000 gross ton ship) docks at Ward Cove when visiting Ketchikan.   This is about 7 miles north of the downtown Ketchikan area,

Royal Caribbean offers some of the largest ships to the region as well, with two Quantum-class ships (Quantum and Ovation of the Seas) sailing to some of the larger ports in Alaska like Juneau, Skagway, and Sitka.   These ships carry over 4,000 passengers at double-capacity so it also means some of the tours taken through the ship may be fairly large groups.

If you’re wanting to visit some of the more quaint and less tourist-traveled areas of Alaska a smaller cruise ship will be a better choice.

But if you want to spend more time on the ship and just want the highlights of an Alaskan cruise then one of the larger ships would make sense.

As you can see, individual preference plays a large role in determining what is the “best cruise to Alaska”.

The best cruise lines to Alaska compared

Below are the best Alaska cruises and cruise lines for every type of traveler.

Two of the most well-known cruise lines to Alaska are Holland America and Princess Cruises, and we will start with these two lines first.

Most Proven cruise line to Alaska

holland america cruise ship in alaska with ice capped mountains

When it comes to longevity, Holland America is the cruise line that tops everyone else.  For over 75 years now, Holland America Line has been transporting passengers along Alaska’s coastline and has the awards to prove its commitment to its passengers.

Holland America offers sailings to Alaska on 7 different cruise ships which range in size from the 1,400 passenger Zaandam to the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam which holds 2,600 passengers.  These mid-sized ships offer a nice blend of comfort and maneuverability.

If you prefer a more traditional cruise style that is laid back and full of seasoned travelers this may be the cruise line for you.

The line currently sails to Alaska from three different cruise ports: Anchorage, Seattle, and Vancouver, with Vancouver offering the most sailings.

And if you really want to experience Alaska in all its glory, Holland America has a 28-day sailing in June of 2024 that departs from Seattle.   This particular itinerary sails all the way up the coast and above the arctic circle, allowing passengers to see remote places like Nome and Little Diomede Island.   This is in addition to making calls at Prince Rupert, Haines, College Fjord, Anchorage, Homer, Dutch Harbor, Kodiak, Juneau, Tracy Arm, Sitka, and Ketchikan.

Best Alaska cruise for a land and sea combo

Princess cruise ship in Glacier Bay Alaska

Another veteran of Alaskan sailings, Princess Cruises has been navigating these waters for over 50 years.  But one of the biggest perks of cruising with Princess is the Alaska Lodges they provide with their land tours.  These 5 lodges and hotels are strategically located near the best attractions in Alaska in places like Fairbanks, Mt. McKinley, Kenai, Copper River and Denali National Park.

Princess Lodges is actually a part of Princess Cruises so you can get your cruise and land portion of your trip all under one roof.  Plus, the company offers incredible trips around the Alaskan landscape with Princess Rail Tours that travels between Anchorage and Fairbanks.  These trains offer the largest domed windows ever made for a rail car, so you can enjoy the view and some yummy food at the same time.

So, if you want more than a cruise to Alaska and would like plenty of time on land as well, Princess offers some fantastic packages.

With seven cruise ships that sail to Alaska, Princess offers more sailings to this region than almost any other line.  And with their ‘North to Alaska’ enrichment program you can really immerse yourself in Alaskan culture

Princess also offers a ton of two week voyages to Alaska as well.   There are currently 55 14-day cruises being offered with the company through next year.  These sailing are on the ships Sapphire Princess, Majestic Princess, and Royal Princess .  The last two are Royal-class vessels that I really love sailing on, and are perfect for an Alaskan sailing, although might be a bit big for some with a 3,600 passenger capacity.  This cruise departs from Vancouver and stops at 11 ports including College Fjord, Hubbard Glacier, Icy Strait Point, and twice at Glacier National Bay, just to name a few.

This is also one of the few cruise lines that sails out of San Francisco on two of the line’s smaller ships, Ruby Princess and Crown Princess.

Best Alaska cruise lines for families with teenagers

best cruise line to alaska 2024

It’s hard to keep everyone happy.  And if you’re traveling with a family of various ages you might want to consider a cruise on one of the mega ships that can keep everyone entertained, even teenagers.  Here are a couple of cruise lines best for families.

Royal Caribbean International is known for innovation in cruise ships that are built with families in mind.    Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas are two Quantum-class vessels with the company that sail to Alaska, mostly departing from Seattle.  These 4,100 capacity ships offer amenities like bumper cars, laser tag, a sky-diving simulator, and even an escape room.

Royal Caribbean also has world-class entertainment on its ships and are a great option for families with diverse ages.

Besides these larger ships, Royal Caribbean also offers Alaska cruises on some of its smaller ships like Brilliance of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas, and Radiance of the Seas.

But this isn’t the only line with mega-ships sailing to America’s last frontier.

Norwegian Cruise Line also sails some of its 169,00 gross ton Breakaway-class vessels to Alaska.  Norwegian Bliss, Encore, and Joy are all mega ships with Norwegian and each have a go-kart track on board.  This in addition to a ropes course, an impressive virtual reality arcade, laser tag and more.

So while you’re taking in the awe-inspiring sights around the ship, your family can be enjoying all kinds of onboard activities  on the ship.  It’s a win-win.

The three Breakaway-class ships mentioned above all depart from Seattle.

And if you want a smaller ship with Norwegian you can check out the 11-nighter on Norwegian Sun that also sails out of Seattle.

Best Alaska cruise for families with young children

best cruise line to alaska 2024

You don’t have to travel with kids to take a Disney cruise to Alaska .  In fact, many love to cruise with this line just because of the excellent service and food.   The crew are trained to practically read your mind and can usually remember your favorite drink order before you even tell them.

But if you do happen to have young children, it’s hard to beat Disney Cruise Line .

Instead of a pirate-themed deck party you will notice a “Frozen” theme on an Alaskan journey.   Menus will be slightly different from Caribbean cruises as well, and will include local cuisine like salmon and venison.

For some kid-free time there are some adult-only areas on the ship.

The 2,700 capacity Disney Wonder is the current ship sailing on Alaskan itineraries.  It sails round-trip out of Vancouver, Canada and offers 5 and 7 night itineraries with an 8-day and 9-day as well.  Most sailings are 7-nights.  I listed the options below.

  • 5 nights: 1 cruise sailing to Glacier Viewing (Stikine Icecap), Ketchikan
  • 7 nights: 15 cruises sailing to Glacier Viewing (Stikine Icecap), Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan
  • 8 nights: 1 sailing to Glacier Viewing (Stikine Icecap), Skagway, Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan
  • 9 nights: 1 sailing to Glacier Viewing (Stikine Icecap), Skagway, Juneau, Hubbard Glacier, Sitka, Ketchikan

Best budget-friendly cruise lines to Alaska

Norwegian cruise line 2024 itineraries

Some of the most affordable options might surprise you.  There are 4 cruise lines we need to put in this category.  Two of them are Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line .  But Holland America and Celebrity Cruises also make the list.

Even though Holland America and Celebrity consider themselves to be premium cruise lines some of their older ships offer some of the lowest rates you can find.

While the time of year plays a large role in how much your cruise will cost, take a cruise on an older ship to save even more money.

Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas has some sailings for as little as $320 per person for an interior cabin (without taxes and fees), and Norwegian Jewel and Spirit are currently $399 at the low range.

Celebrity Millenium is an older ship with the line but offers some sailings for around $400 as well and does both northbound and southbound one-way itineraries.

How about Holland America?  For about $400 per person you can find sailings on Volendam and Noordam for 7-night voyages.  Even the 2016 Koningsdam has some September itineraries for just over $400 per person for an interior stateroom.  It’s yet another reason that Holland America drives a pretty hard bargain when it comes to amazing Alaskan cruises.

One thing to note is that cruises to Alaska cost more than destinations like the Caribbean.  Things like port fees will cost more as well, but we think it’s well worth the trip.

Best small ship cruise line to Alaska

best cruise line to alaska 2024

When it comes to small ship comfort done right, we really love Viking Ocean .  Every Viking Ocean cruise ship is nearly identical.  The 930 passenger ships are 47,500 in gross tonnage and are the perfect size for an Alaskan sailing.

There are currently two Viking ships sailing to this region: Viking Orion and Viking Sea.

Not only are the ships fantastic, with incredible thermal suites in the spa, heated floors in the bathrooms, and elegant Scandinavian design, but the company really emphasizes getting the most out of each destination.  It’s called “The thinking man’s cruise” for a reason, as the line does a great job in educating its passengers with some of the best experts in their field.

Oh, and did I mention that this is an adult-only cruise line?

Only one-way sailings are offered with Viking cruises to Alaska.  You can choose to start in Seward or Vancouver for an 11-day voyage that has an itinerary that looks like this: Scenic sailing through the inside passage, Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point, Yakutat Bay (Hubbard Glacier), Valdez, and Seward.

You can also extend your cruise with some land tours with 5 to 6 extra nights in Denali, Talkeetna, and Fairbanks.

Oceania Cruises is another good choice for small cruise ships to Alaska, especially if you’re a foodie.  Most of the line’s sailings to this area are on the ship, Regatta,  which is a 30,000 gross ton vessel with a capacity of only 656 passengers.

Regatta offers sailings out of Vancouver, Seattle, and Los Angeles with 7-night to 13-night itineraries.  There are both round-trip and one-way sailings with Oceania so there’s a lot of variety of options there as well.

Unlike Viking,  Oceania not only allows children onboard but has an Alaska Youth Explorer program suited for children between 5 and 12.

Both Viking and Oceania are mostly all-inclusive, but not entirely.  The next cruise lines in our list include just about everything you can imagine.

Best Alaska cruise for ultra luxury

best cruise line to alaska 2024

For the ultimate luxury cruise to Alaska you have a couple choices.  Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers 7-14 night itineraries that are both immersive and all-inclusive, meaning you won’t have to worry about charges that keep getting added to your bill.   Things like flights, transfers, specialty dining, all beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi, and even shore excursions are all complimentary.

Seven Seas Explorer is currently the cruise ship dedicated to Alaskan itineraries.  The ship is a 55,000 gross ton vessel with a capacity of 750 passengers.  So not only do you get that intimate ship experience in Alaska but you get some refined luxury along with it.

The suite-only ship will cost around $6,000 – $7,000 per person on a 7-night sailing.  The 14-night sailings are round-trip and the 7-nighters are one-way.

Seabourn Cruise Line is another option for the ultra luxury category.

The line has billed itself as “ultra-luxury with expedition-style flair” so passengers can really immerse themselves in these Alaskan ports of call with up-close adventures.

The expedition team offers excursions by means of Zodiacs and kayaks to get up close to glaciers and find hiking trails and waterfalls on shore.  And all of this while being able to dine on as much caviar as you can handle.

Seabourn Odyssey is currently the cruise ship dedicated to Alaska for the line and it offers 7-15 night sailings in the area.  The 32,000 gross ton vessel has a capacity of 450 guests and has one of the best crew to passenger ratios in the industry along with Regent Seven Seas.

The 7 and 8 night sailings are one-way while the 11-15 night itineraries are round-trip.  A 7-night sailing in May of 2023 will start around $2,500 to $3,000 per person.

Silversea is another ultra luxury cruise line that carries guests to America’s northwestern coastline with all-inclusive packages.   You can book 7-night one-way itineraries or an epic 18-night voyage from Nome, Alaska to Vancouver in one of the best Alaskan cruise itineraries I’ve seen.  The latter itinerary is on the expedition vessel, Silver Wind.

Even the largest Silversea cruise ships only carry 596 passengers, offering another great passenger to crew ratio.

Best expedition cruises to Alaska

MS Roald Amundsen hurtigruten

If you’re all about exploration and want to really “get your hands dirty” on an expedition style cruise to Alaska, Hurtigruten is a great choice.   Whether you want to enjoy a sled dog race, kayak near a glacier, or visit abandoned islands, these ships offer a unique experience.

Not only will you get to spend a ton of time on land, but a Hurtigruten ship will take you to ports and villages that are so remote that most other cruise line have no access to them.

MS Roald Amundsen carries 530 guests on its 21,000 gross ton frame and is currently the ship sailing to Alaska for the Norwegian owned company.

The vessel has an onboard science center as well.  But it’s not just about exploration.  The ship also has an onboard sauna, heated by its hybrid engine.

An 18-night Alaskan sailing with the line will take you to off-the beaten-path places like Wrangell, Kodiak, Chignik, Unga Island, St Paul Island, St Matthew Island and Nome.  At $10,000 to $13,000 per person for ocean-view cabins on an 18-night sailing it might be out of the reach of some, but if you truly want an expedition to Alaska, Hurtigruten is among the best.

National Geographic (Lindblad Expeditions) also offers some fantastic expedition ships to Alaska and these itineraries can begin in Seattle, Juneau, Sitka, or Ketchikan.

For those who want a true Alaskan immersion, Alaskan Dream Cruises could fit the bill.  It is a small-ship cruise company that specializes in providing authentic and intimate Alaska experiences . Their five ships, ranging from 12 to 76 passengers, allow them to access remote and off-the-beaten-path destinations that larger cruise ships cannot.

Alaskan Dream Cruises’ itineraries are designed by Alaskans who know their area and are passionate about sharing their state’s natural beauty, history, and culture with guests. Passengers can expect to see glaciers, rainforests, waterfalls, and wildlife such as whales, bears, and eagles.

I could also put UnCruise Adventures in this category but I’m going to add it to the one below as it does something no one else offers.

Best off-season cruises to Alaska

best cruise line to alaska 2024

A trip with UnCruise Adventures is truly more of an adventure than anything else, so the name says it all.  This is not your typical cruise to Alaska.  UnCruise provides an immersive experience that lets you reach remote areas in ways that are respectful to the region.  And with some ships only carrying 22 passengers these ships hardly make a footprint at all, while allowing each guest to have a more customized experience.

The small vessel can maneuver through small bays and unique areas, allowing passengers to kayak right up to wildlife, glaciers, and all the natural beauty Alaska affords.

The Alaska’s Winter Sports & Northern Lights sailing takes place when most cruise lines can’t sail to Alaska.  These trips take place as early as February and March and allow passengers to witness the Northern Lights and even enjoy some winter activities as skiing and ice skating.

On most 7-night sailings with UnCruise prices start around $4,000 to $6,000 per person.

Other notable cruise lines to Alaska

carnival cruise ship in alaska

Carnival Cruise Line offers some of the most affordable options for sailing out of California, either from Long Beach or San Francisco.    You can take a 14-night sailing out of Long Beach on Carnival Miracle and only spend around $1,500 per person for an interior cabin.

Carnival Miracle also offers several 10 and 11 night sailings out of San Francisco that visit places like Prince Rupert, Ketchikan, Tracy Arm, Juneau, Skagway, and Icy Strait Point.  Just remember that since you’re sailing out of California you will have at least a couple sea days before reaching Alaska.

Most of Carnival Cruise Line’s itineraries sail out of Seattle, however.  Three ships make this regular voyage: Carnival Freedom, Carnival Luminosa, and Carnival Spirit.  Luminosa was formerly a Costa Cruises ship that was just added to Carnival’s fleet near the end of 2022.

Some of the lowest cost Carnival sailings currently start at $564 per person for an interior stateroom on a 7-night sailing.

Cunard , a Carnival Corporation owned line, currently only sails out of Vancouver for its Alaska focused cruises.   The line offers 7-13 night round-trip itineraries with the longer journeys visiting both Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier, two of the most popular visits.

Windstar Cruises is a luxury cruise line that offers mostly one-way itineraries to the area, both northbound and southbound out of Anchorage and Vancouver respectively.   Star Breeze is the current vessel being used for these sailings.  It’s a sub-10,000 gross ton vessel with a double capacity around 312 guests.

Windstar is able to launch Zodiacs right from the ship and get you close to the shorelines for your best shot at spotting wildlife.  Each Alaskan cruise has 8 expedition experts, and with such a small capacity on the ship you’re able to get more personalized insight about each location.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Alaska Cruises Insider

The sheer size of Alaska lends itself to a wide variety of terrain and travel experiences. This diversity means you need to be prepared for a lot of change while traveling.

The best time to travel to Alaska depends on your priorities. If you're interested in the Midnight Sun, the longest day of the year is June 21, when you can experience close to 20 or more hours of sunlight in some parts of the state. If you're more interested in the Alaska Northern Lights, the earlier sunset in later summer will allow more contrast and better views of this natural wonder.

No two days will be the same, and you'll need to pack your clothing to prepare for temperature changes throughout the day. Think layers: zip-up sweaters, boots, rain jackets.

Alaska is not a formal place; people even wear jeans to the opera. Focus more on comfort when deciding what clothing to pack.

Cameras, binoculars, rain ponchos and jackets are useful, but add these to the souvenirs you'll be picking up and soon your bag will be too heavy to tote around. Bring along a quality day pack to make it easier to hold your necessities.

Learn a few words in Alaska's local lingo: The "Alcan" is the Alaska-Canada Highway, for example, and "fish stories" are the local version of tall tales — unreliable yarns of mythological proportions, often told by fisherman.

ALASKAN CUISINE WILD IS THE WAY

Alaskan food focuses on locally sourced ingredients that reflect the state's rugged terrain and the vast oceans surrounding it. These nutrient-rich waters serve up some gorgeous fish and shellfish, from super-fresh salmon to huge Alaskan King Crabs that can feed a crowd, while game meats and berries from the wilderness form a perfect marriage of flavor.

GO WILD FOR BERRIES

Alaskan wild berries are sweet and pack a powerful punch of flavor. Whether served up in jams, candies, pies or cobblers, Alaskan blueberries, high-bush cranberries and other local wild berries are a staple when it comes to Alaskan summer eats.

The Best Time to Cruise Alaska for Wildlife, Northern Lights, and Fewer Crowds

By Susan B. Barnes

The best time to cruise Alaska isn't obvious—until you're quietly sailing along its calm waters under a cloudless, late-spring sky. It was on one such day that someone on board spotted a whale breaching. And then again. And again. Within minutes it seemed everyone on board had gathered at the railings on deck to watch. The captain of the ship nimbly repositioned us, giving both the port and starboard sides prime viewing, at a safe and respectful distance from the animals. With binoculars, cameras, and phones at the ready, the passengers and crew aboard  UnCruise Adventures'  86-guest  S.S. Legacy  settled in for what turned out to be an hour-long private show by a juvenile humpback who had migrated from Hawaii to spend the summer in the nutrient-rich Alaskan waters.

This is but one of the incredible experiences that may be had when visiting Alaska in the “secret season”—springtime. Not only are the flowers and plant life awakening from their wintertime slumber, so is its wildlife. Though the state’s more temperate summer season has long attracted its largest numbers of visitors, an increasing number of in-the-know travelers are looking to spring as the best time to cruise to Alaska , when they can count on fewer crowds—and increased savings—without sacrificing their chance to take advantage of the state’s landscape and  wildlife sightings .

On that same late-April voyage with UnCruise, the  Northern Lights  danced through the sky on night one, and through the week we spotted grizzly bear mamas and their cubs skirting the coastline; bald eagles soaring overhead; humpback whales and orcas breaking the water’s surface to breathe; puffins, seals, and sea lions bobbing in the water and laying out on rocks—even a wolf on the shoreline, feasting on a fresh kill. (Our captain said he had seen a wolf in Alaska only twice in his 30-year career.)

We sailed roundtrip from Juneau, and while I’ve visited the capital city during the busy summer months, I found the restaurants, bars, and shops much less crowded, reliably filled with locals for the most part. On the water, we rarely passed any other ships or boats, aside from fishermen out for their catches.

According to  Travel Alaska , cruising is the most popular way to explore the state, and Cruise Lines International Association Alaska predicts that 1.64 million cruise line passengers will sail to and within Alaska in 2024.

But when is really the best time to sail Alaska? We’ve broken the seasons down for you, including the highlights of each, as well as the best cruise lines and cruise ships to consider so you can make your bucket list dreams come true.

Celebrity Alaska Cruise

Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge sets sail for the first time in Alaska this year.

April and May

If your schedule allows, not only does sailing Alaska in April and May afford the possibilities of glimpsing the Northern Lights and seeing wildlife emerge from their winter hibernation, it’s a more affordable and less crowded time to cruise, too. April and May are also the driest months in Alaska, so the chances of rain are slim.

Norwegian Cruise Line kicks off the 2024 Alaska cruise season when Norwegian Bliss sets sail on a weeklong, roundtrip itinerary from Seattle; she will be the only ship sailing in Alaska the first two weeks of spring. Balcony cabins are still available on the season’s inaugural sailing at a discounted fare of $1,029 per person .

Smaller ships like those that comprise UnCruise Adventures ’ and Alaska Dream Cruises ’ fleets can maneuver closer to the coastline for better views of bears rambling along the beaches and on-land excursions without another soul around. Uncruise’s 12-night “Inside Passage” itinerary departs April 15 with rates starting at $6,300 per person , and Alaska Dream Cruises’ seven-night “Last Frontier Adventure” has starting rates from $3,995 per person .

June to August

Warmer temperatures, an average of 17 hours of daylight, and schools’ summer vacations all make Alaska a popular destination for cruising in June, July, and August. Expect crowded ports and more ships out on the water, but that’s not to say it’s not a good time to set sail: bears are still active, as are whales and native bird life.

Holland America Line, which has sailed in Alaska for 75 years, offers 50 itineraries throughout June, July, and August, including the new 28-day Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice itinerary that departs June 9 from Seattle; verandah staterooms start at $7,259 per person . Family favorite Disney Cruise Line offers 13 itineraries over the summer, including a seven-night itinerary from $3,467 per person .

Not only is school back in session in September, which means fewer crowds at ports, but the chances of seeing the Northern Lights return, especially if combining your cruise with a land tour that takes you further north into Alaska. Fall is also mating season for wildlife, so expect to see some friskiness.

Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge sets sail for the first time in Alaska this year and has four six- and seven-night itineraries in September, starting at $599 per person . For a cruise-tour option, Princess ’ 12-day Denali Explorer itinerary blends five days on land with a weeklong cruise with mini-suite rates from $4,008 per person .

The Alaska cruise season winds down in October, with only a few ships setting sail. Just as in April and May, you’ll likely have the water to yourself, and even fewer people in the ports you call upon. Along with cooler weather, you’ll also find lower fares that will please your bank account.

Just as Norwegian Cruise Line kicks off the 2024 Alaska cruise season in April, it’s the last cruise line to set sail in the state, and the only one to sail in October. The seven- and nine-day itineraries sail roundtrip from Seattle, and a recent search found fares more than 80% off published fares, starting at $499 per person .

7-Night Alaska Northbound Glacier

The reverse itinerary of the southbound voyage above, this cruise offers similar ports of call and sea days, except you'll stop in Sitka rather than Skagway. This sailing is also on Celebrity Summit. During your time in Icy Strait Point, consider a whale watching excursion; you are guaranteed to see whales (or receive your money back) on one of the tours departing from their shores. 7-Day Alaska from Seattle

This seven-day voyage on Carnival Spirit sails round-trip from Seattle and features one day to explore the ship while at sea, plus a scenic cruising day in Tracy Arm Fjord. Ports of call include Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, as well as a late evening stop in Victoria before you disembark the next day in Seattle. For your day in Ketchikan, consider booking the award-winning Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour on the famed Aleutian Ballad from the Discovery Channel show, "Deadliest Catch."

This itinerary is also offered on Carnival Luminosa . If you are sailing in 2025, you can book the same seven-day cruise starting at $609 per person for the April 14 voyage on Carnival Spirit.

Shorter cruises

A shorter cruise may be an attractive option if you don't have extensive vacation time or you prefer to spend a few days ashore before or after your sailing. If kids are in tow for the adventure – and it's your first time cruising with them – you might also want fewer days at sea to test the waters (literally). See our pick of competitively priced four- and five-night Alaska cruises, below.

Princess Cruises: 4-Day Alaska Sampler

This 2025 cruise aboard Discovery Princess includes one port of call, Ketchikan, and two days at sea between Vancouver and Seattle. This 4-Day Alaska Sampler itinerary is also offered on May 13, 2025, on Royal Princess , with a starting price of $327 per person. The reverse itinerary (Seattle to Vancouver) is offered on May 23, 2025, on Grand Princess; pricing starts at $347 per person.

Princess Cruises: 5-Day Alaska Sampler

If you want to sail with Princess for one extra day, consider booking the five-day sampler cruise sailing round-trip from Vancouver. This early season itinerary aboard Caribbean Princess calls on Sitka and Ketchikan, offering more time ashore to explore these two popular coastal towns along Alaska's Inside Passage. Guests will also have two sea days to enjoy activities and dining experiences on the ship.

How to find the best Alaska cruise deals

Book during wave season.

As previously mentioned, you can take advantage of some of the best deals of the year during wave season. Promotions offered during wave season include lower cruise fares, reduced deposits and onboard credits. You can also find special rates (or free fares) for the third and fourth guests in the same room, making this the perfect time to book a family cruise.

In addition, look for discounts on higher-level staterooms and suites, or even accommodations in exclusive areas of the ship, such as The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line or The Retreat on Celebrity Cruises. These private spaces offer swanky extras like luxurious accommodations, all-inclusive pricing , butler service, a team of attendants and concierge service, as well as private restaurants, lounges and pools. With lower pricing, wave season may be the best time to splurge on a cruise vacation in one of these upscale enclaves.

Promotional pricing beyond wave season

If you miss booking your cruise during wave season, don't panic. Many lines offer special pricing and flash sales throughout the year and advertise lower fares for voyages during Alaska's shoulder seasons, which fall in May and September.

"You will always find the more affordable Alaska cruises toward the beginning and end of the season. This year, the Alaska cruise season begins in April and continues through October," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic. She adds, "The challenge with shoulder season Alaska cruises is that the weather might not be the best – it can snow in Alaska in April and early May – and in the fall, the nights will be longer (although, there is a chance you might see northern lights )."

In addition to giving up the warmer summer weather (and possibly having snow), you may also miss some optimal wildlife viewing opportunities if you cruise early or late in the season. For example, the peak time for bear-watching excursions extends from mid-June to mid-August, which falls during the height of the Alaska cruise season in July and August.

If you're looking for other ways to save money on your cruise, Gray Faust advises that older ships also provide more value when you're looking for deals.

It's important to note that a few of this year's wave deals extend just until the end of February 2024, so you'll need to refer to the individual cruise line websites to see the exact dates for the special offers. You may also be able to find lower prices on some discount and aggregator sites, like Cruise Critic, Cruises.com and Priceline.

The breathtaking scenery is reason enough to visit Alaska.

Alaska cruises are so popular because they’re an easy way to surround yourself with some of the country’s most beautiful scenery while taking advantage of all the perks of a luxury ship – like top notch accommodations, fun activities and great food.

To give you an even more immersive Alaska experience that goes beyond shore excursions, many cruise lines offer land and sea packages so you get to enjoy the best of both worlds. Your week-long cruise is followed by (or preceded by) a five-day land tour that takes you on a deep dive into Denali National Park and areas you otherwise wouldn’t get to explore on the ship.

Princess , a leader in this area, actually owns and operates five unique Wilderness Lodges which you get to call home each night as you’re whisked around the state, taking in wildlife sightings and mountain views along the way.

The gorgeous, ever-changing landscape of Denail National Park.

If you don’t have time to add a land portion to your cruise, don’t worry. Princess is an expert in Alaska and, in addition to an extensive selection of shore excursions, they offer exclusive onboard activities to help immerse you in the culture, including the always popular Puppies in the Piazza, which features a visit from the cutest future four-legged Iditarod champions, and a fascinating presentation by Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the prestigious sled dog race.

I did a Princess Alaska Cruisetour two summers ago and am seriously considering planning another one. I’ve done Alaska cruises before but this one was extra special – both onboard, thanks to the amazing Princess crew who literally treated everyone like royalty, and on land, where I got to experience parts of The Last Frontier I’d never had access to on a ship.

You probably don’t need more reasons to book an Alaska cruise but, if you want to know what to expect on the land portion, here are just a few of the reasons you should start thinking about a Princess Alaska Cruisetour :

The intrepid explorer for whom Hotel Captain Cook is named.

You’ll start your extension in Alaska’s largest city, with an overnight at the legendary Hotel Captain Cook , a member of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts Collection. The historic hotel features an extensive art collection, four restaurants and a dozen shops. Plus, its Athletic Club is a great place to get in a swim, workout or massage after a long flight. Centrally located downtown, it makes an ideal homebase from which to explore the city like the hotel’s namesake.

Princess Wilderness Lodges

A magical view of Mt. McKinley from Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge.

Because Princess owns their own properties throughout Alaska, Cruisetour guests are treated like family as they’re welcomed to different lodges along their journey. Every lodge has its own distinct personality but all offer cozy rooms and delicious meals along with stunning scenery. They also offer a variety of activities and places to just sit by the fire so you can be as busy or as relaxed as you choose. At Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge, you can take a glass class from a local artist and at Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, you can enjoy the views from the floor to ceiling windows in the communal Great Room or get outside and take a hike up to the Treehouse to try to get a glimpse of the peak in person.

Talkeetna was the inspiration for the hit TV show, "Northern Exposure."

The town that inspired the hit TV show, Northern Exposure , Talkeetna is quirky and charming and, thanks to its strong artist community, a great place to shop for local art. We took a fun ride with the sled dogs of Sun Dog Kennel , led by Iditarod musher Jerry Sousa, and loved meeting the newest additions to their furry family! Unfortunately, we didn’t get to meet the mayor of Talkeetna — who, um, is a cat — but that’s just another reason to come back and spend more time in this unique town.

Direct-To-The-Wilderness Railway

The views are everywhere on Princess' glass domed railway.

Princess uses its own luxury train to transport guests from Talkeetna to Denali and it’s proof that the journey is as important as the destination. The glass domed railway cars provide all-around views – and you won’t know where to look first. (It’s similar to the Rocky Mountaineer experience, which is also a must-do.) You’ll enjoy a made-to-order lunch in the dining car and snacks and drinks are always available. The ride is lovely and you won’t want to close your eyes to rest because there’s always so much to see.

Denali National Park

The highlight of our visit to Denali National Park.

It’s impossible to describe a visit to Denali because it is constantly changing but just know that it is magnificent in every iteration. The scenery is just breathtaking and we got to see lots of wildlife but the hands-down highlight was when a bear came right up to our bus. Everyone went silent and just watched as it sauntered by without a care in the world. This is something every traveler should experience.

Discovery Riverboat Cruise

Don't miss a Discovery cruise on the Chena and Tanana rivers..

Take a riverboat ride on an authentic sternwheeler – which is a totally different experience than your Princess cruise ship! This slow-moving steamboat will show you a fascinating side of Fairbanks, making stops for you to get up close and personal with sled dogs and to tour a replica of an Athabascan Indian Village. You’ll also get to watch a bush pilot demonstrate their skills while you enjoy a snack.

Running Reindeer Ranch

Running Reindeer Ranch in Fairbanks gives you a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to get up close and ... [+] personal with these magnificent creatures.

Visiting this family-run reindeer ranch in Fairbanks is like walking into a fairy tale and you won’t stop smiling the whole time you’re there. Not only do you get to take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful boreal forest with actual reindeer but you get to know them individually and can even take photos with them. You’ll learn so much about these magnificent creatures and, depending on the time of year, you may also be able to sign up for reindeer yoga or reindeer music. This is an unforgettable experience and the animals are just pure joy.

The 9 best northern lights alaska cruises for 2024 & beyond.

Consider one of these trips for a chance to see this mesmerizing natural wonder.

The Best Northern Lights Alaska Cruises

There's no other experience on Earth quite like witnessing the northern lights. Also known as the aurora borealis, this spellbinding phenomenon – when brilliant hues of green, yellow and purple dance across the night sky – is visible in Alaska from late August to late April. Clear, dark evenings away from the ambient light of cities provide prime viewing opportunities.

Alaska is one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis – especially locations in the Interior and Arctic regions, such as Coldfoot, Wiseman, Utqiagvik (Barrow) and Nome. Fairbanks is regarded as a top location due to its position directly under the auroral oval, a ring-shaped area in the far north where aurora activity is generally concentrated. The Southcentral region of Alaska, where you'll find Anchorage, Talkeetna and the Mat-Su Valley, also offers basecamps for northern lights viewing.

If you're hoping to see the magic aboard an Alaska cruise in 2024 or 2025, then you just might be in luck. Experts predict the next few seasons will be particularly good for northern lights sightings, due to increased solar activity. While seeing the northern lights is never guaranteed, your best chance of seeing them is during these high-activity solar cycles, which occur about every 11 years.

Find your perfect cruise

When to take a cruise to view the northern lights

The Alaska cruise season falls between May and September, with a few cruise lines extending the season from April to October.

Holland America Line recommends booking a cruise or cruisetour (a combined sea and land package) during the autumnal equinox, or the official start of autumn, which falls around Sept. 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field are more likely around the autumn and spring equinoxes, which could increase your chances of seeing the aurora. For the best views, Holland America advises heading to higher ground in Anchorage , to vantage points like Glen Alps, the Knit River Valley and Point Woronzof.

Princess Cruises also suggests booking your vacation in the fall. September is an ideal month to watch for the spectacle in the sky as the nights start getting longer and darker. The elusive display is most likely to appear on crystal-clear evenings between midnight and 4 a.m. While you can see incredible light shows in Anchorage, consider an extended tour of Fairbanks or the Interior that takes you away from light pollution (such as to Denali National Park & Preserve).

U.S. News has compiled a list of the nine best cruises and cruisetours to give you the optimal chance of viewing these whimsical lights in the sky, with a focus on sailings around the autumnal equinox in 2024 and later dates in September 2025. We've also included an early sailing in April, before the end of the aurora season. (Keep in mind: Many of these trips and itineraries are also available on other dates during the season. Cruise fares were accurate at the time of publication.)

9-Day Denali: Tour D8l

This nine-day land and sea tour on Nieuw Amsterdam includes an opportunity to search for the northern lights in Fairbanks, one of the best places to see them in Alaska (and in the world). Holland America offers a four-hour aurora borealis viewing tour outside the city in a yurt; it operates between the last week of August and mid-September.

If you'd like more options, there's no shortage of tour operators in town that can take you on a northern lights adventure in Fairbanks. You can even fly into town early to stay in the wilderness in an igloo with clear views of the night sky at Borealis Basecamp, located less than 30 miles from Fairbanks. Be sure to notify your hotel that you'd like a wake-up call or a knock on the door if the northern lights are on display.

You'll have more opportunities to see the aurora when you head to Denali National Park & Preserve for a stay at Holland America 's exclusive 60-acre McKinley Chalet Resort, located near the entrance to the park. After a full day exploring the park by ATV or a bucket list flightseeing adventure over Denali, you'll have another chance to see the colorful light display in Alaska's wilderness after midnight. The rest of the cruisetour itinerary includes scenic cruising days, with one spent in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. You'll also call on Juneau , Skagway and Ketchikan before disembarking in Vancouver .

14-Day Denali: Tour D3c

This 14-day adventure includes scenic cruising of the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord, with stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Whittier and Seward. You'll then have nearly a week on land in Anchorage, Denali National Park & Preserve and Fairbanks to go aurora hunting. If you spend an extra night or two in Fairbanks at the end of the trip, you'll be in town for the autumnal equinox, maximizing your northern lights viewing opportunities.

With the extra time in town, plan to book the Arctic Circle Air Adventure with Northern Alaska Tour Company. This unforgettable journey takes you on a flight over the Yukon River and Brooks Range, just east of the Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve. You'll then land 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle in the community of Coldfoot and receive an Arctic Circle Adventure Certificate before your return flight to Fairbanks.

7-Day Glacier Discovery Northbound

If you're interested in a cruise-only option and would prefer to arrange the land portion independently, consider this seven-day voyage on Nieuw Amsterdam. The itinerary includes three scenic cruising days, with one day in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, and calls on the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway before disembarking in Whittier, which sits roughly 60 miles south of Anchorage.

From Whittier, there are many options to transfer to Anchorage (by rail or by road), including the iconic Glacier Discovery Train. Plan to stay a few evenings in Anchorage with a multiday guided aurora tour, or reserve a spot on an evening outing in search of the northern lights.

11-Day Denali Explorer – Tour DA4

This 11-day cruisetour begins with a seven-night voyage embarking from Vancouver on Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess . The itinerary includes three sea days, two of which are dedicated to scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord. You'll make stops in the coastal towns of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Anchorage (Whittier) before disembarking to depart for the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge via the line's direct-to-the-wilderness rail service.

Spending three nights at the lodge – located just outside the entrance to the park – in mid-September will offer excellent opportunities for aurora viewing. Keep your fingers crossed for high solar activity and clear, dark skies. Throughout your trip, learn photography tips to capture the mesmerizing display through Princess' North to Alaska Program. After your stay in Denali, you'll take a motor coach to Anchorage and stay overnight in a hotel there to finish up your voyage.

10-Day On Your Own – Tour BBX

The 10-Day On Your Own cruisetour with Princess Cruises begins with three nights on land, including overnights in Fairbanks, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. While at the Mt. McKinley resort, be sure to check out the lodge's treehouse. Designed by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," this vantage point offers impressive views of Denali – the highest peak in North America at 20,310 feet above sea level.

Before heading off to bed, get an update on aurora activity from the tracker on your smartphone, especially if you have clear skies that night; the app My Aurora Forecast & Alerts has excellent reviews. Request a wake-up call to have the Princess lodge staff call your room if the dazzling bands of light begin to dance in the sky. The next day, after traveling to Whittier by motor coach, you'll embark on your cruise to Vancouver aboard Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess.

The voyage from Whittier includes three sea days for relaxing activities on board the ship, with two days of scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier and in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. During your time in Glacier Bay, park rangers will board the ship to offer commentary about this captivating wilderness area's pristine glaciers and abundant wildlife. Younger cruisers and teens will also appreciate learning about this spectacular place through the Junior Ranger program, which features interactive games, activities and presentations. (All cruise ships visiting the park participate in this program with the National Park Service.) Ports of call for the rest of the journey include Icy Strait Point or Skagway (depending on the cruise), then Juneau and Ketchikan. The voyage ends in Vancouver.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

The Great National Parks Expedition Cruisetour

Celebrity's pre-cruise national parks adventure takes guests on a wildlife viewing quest to destinations in the north and the Interior where you can watch for the aurora. The 12-night trip begins in Fairbanks with a free day to explore.

Consider a trip to the University of Alaska Museum of the North, which features exhibits on Arctic dinosaurs, diverse wildlife, Alaska Native cultures and 2,000 years of Alaska art. You could also visit the impressive collection of antique cars and clothing at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, or take a walk with the reindeer into the woods at Running Reindeer Ranch. The second day in town includes a Riverboat Discovery ride and a tour of the city, as part of the cruisetour.

On the third day, you'll board the Wilderness Express (a glass-domed railcar) for the ride to Denali. Then, you'll embark on the Tundra Wilderness Tour in search of the park's grizzly bears, moose, Dall sheep and other wildlife. Be sure to put your name on the list before bedtime to get a wake-up call for aurora activity. You'll also have one evening in Anchorage, where you can arrange for a northern lights tour, and one night in Seward before setting sail on Celebrity Summit the next morning. Highlights of the voyage include cruising Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage as well as stopping in Juneau, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. You'll disembark in Vancouver.

13-Day Denali Explorer – Pre-Cruise Cruisetour

Norwegian Cruise Line's six-day pre-cruise adventure begins with overnights in Fairbanks, Denali and Anchorage, where you'll have the best chances to view the northern lights. Other highlights for the first part of the trip include a deluxe dome car rail journey from Talkeetna to Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad and a private tour to an Iditarod sled dog musher's kennel. You'll also have plenty of time in Denali National Park to book a flightseeing tour, go whitewater rafting, or take a hike with a park ranger to look for bears, moose, Dall sheep, wolves and other local wildlife before starting your cruise in Seattle .

Norwegian Encore will call on Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan (Ward Cove) in Alaska. The Mill at Ward Cove near Ketchikan is a newly built cruise ship port that serves as a jumping-off point for outdoor activities in the Tongass National Forest, from hiking and biking to kayaking and sea cycling. You can even pick up souvenirs, grab a bite to eat and sample a cold Alaska brew at the mill. The cruise itinerary also includes one day at sea and a stop in Victoria, British Columbia, before you disembark in Seattle.

7-Night Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan

Consider this seven-day cruise on Norwegian Bliss if you prefer to travel early in the spring and take your chances at catching the northern lights toward the end of aurora season, which falls around April 21. This round-trip itinerary from Seattle is one of the earliest sailings of the year to visit the Great Land and features two sea days, with one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. You'll also visit Sitka, Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan (Ward Cove) and Victoria before disembarking in Seattle.

Juneau will offer one of the best opportunities during the cruise for seeing the northern lights, although chances are dependent on the weather and solar activity. There are several apps and websites with real-time updates for aurora tracking, including My Aurora Forecast & Alerts. If the skies are clear in the evening and the forecast looks promising, ask guest relations if there's a sign-up sheet to get a call or a knock on the door in the event of aurora activity.

12 Night Mountain Panorama Adventure Cruisetour 5B (Pre Tour)

This 12-night cruisetour with Royal Caribbean International begins with an overnight in Anchorage before boarding the Wilderness Express, where you'll have a glass-domed rail car for the journey to Talkeetna. The quirky community of Talkeetna is said to be the inspiration for the fictional Alaska town of Cicely in the 1990s show "Northern Exposure." It's also an excellent base for chasing the aurora – especially at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, where you'll be staying.

After an overnight at the lodge, your tour moves on to Denali, where you can search for wildlife by day and look for the aurora at night. Another evening on land at Hotel Alyeska in the remote town of Girdwood affords more opportunities to chase the finnicky lights before heading to Seward to board your ship, Radiance of the Seas .

Ports of call on this voyage include Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. There are also two days of scenic cruising through Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver. While there are plenty of activities, dining venues, bars and lounges on board to keep you entertained all night long, be sure to save up enough energy to wake up in the middle of the night should you get a call to see the magical natural wonder that is the northern lights.
