The Famous Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge

September 1, 2023 By Sammi 28 Comments

If you want to see crocodiles in Costa Rica, then you have to stop at the crocodile bridge of the Tarcoles River. This river is one of the most well known rivers and places in the country because of the crocodiles. It’s a popular tourist stop for those heading to Jaco, Manuel Antonio and the South Pacific.

A Little Information About Tarcoles River

The entire river watershed covers over 2000 kilometers (1242 miles) and empties into the Pacific Ocean. Additionally, Tarcoles River begins at the point where two different rivers meet creating the border of the Carara National Park .

rio tarcoles

Unfortunately, Tarcoles River is one of the most contaminated and polluted rivers in Costa Rica. Despite the contamination, an abundance of wildlife depends on the river for survival due to its key location. Furthermore, the river also helps irrigate agricultural lands and generates electricity.

The government and local community has implemented programs to clean up the river but it already has many years of contamination so it will take a long process to clean. It is considered an unsafe place to swim obviously. It is best to check it out from a distance, especially because of the sheet amount of crocodiles in this river!

So when you’re driving to the South Pacific, don’t miss the crocodile bridge in Costa Rica!

Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge

The crocodile bridge in Costa Rica is a great stop to stretch your legs. It’s such a popular stop that there are souvenir stores, restaurants, ice cream shops and bathrooms right at the bridge.

If you’re driving, you can park on either side, there are spaces to park in front of the shops or restaurants. We highly recommend taking turns to the bridge, so that one person can stay with the car at all times if you have luggage in the car. Car theft can occur here so take your valuables, roll up windows and lock your doors. Try to park where all the other tourist buses are.

After you park your car, walk onto the bridge. There is a pedestrian barrier running the full length of the bridge but be careful if crossing the street since cars drive very fast on the bridge.

crocodile bridge

The crocodiles move around sometimes so they’ll be on the right or left hand side, straight down. Peer down slowly and you will be blown away by the sheer amount of huge crocodiles laying right under the bridge.

costa rica crocodile bridge

The amount of American crocodiles in this river is simply astounding. So much so that this river is considered to have the highest population of crocodiles in the world. And these guys are massive.

Rio Tarcoles

Thanks to the large numbers of these feisty reptiles, the crocodile bridge is a fascinating stop. People love to see these animals in the wild!

If you book a private shuttle, you can ask the driver to stop at the crocodile bridge. Shared shuttles and public buses don’t stop. Contact us to book your private transfer!

If you decide to stop and walk onto the bridge, PLEASE do not do anything stupid like pretend to hang off the bridge, climb over the railing or drop food down into the river. Be a responsible tourist please!

One of Our Favorite Restaurants to Eat Near the Bridge

If you want to get some food, use the bathroom or get a coffee, we recommend to visit the restaurant near the Crocodile Bridge called Hacienda NOSAVAR (Restaurant Nambi). It’s actually owned by the Doka Coffee Estate and they offer really good coffee and food.

How to Get to the Crocodile Bridge

You have to pass this bridge if you are going to Jaco , Manuel Antonio , the South Pacific or Osa Peninsula via the Costanera Sur Highway(Route 34). The crocodile bridge is in the small town of Tarcoles, about a 20 minute drive north of Jaco.

From San Jose Airport, you will get on the Route 1, then Route 27 and exit at “Jaco.” Continue driving down south on this road, the Route 34 for about 45 minutes before reaching the bridge.

Tarcoles River (Crocodile Bridge) Location

The Costa Rica crocodile bridge is 73 kilometers (45 miles) from San Jose , about a 1 hour and 20 minute drive. On Google Maps, enter “Crocodile Bridge” and make sure it is the one going over River Tarcoles, near Hacienda NOSAVAR.

Another nice stop close by if you have some more time is the Peñon de Guacalillo . It is a coastal viewpoint with picnic tables, bathrooms and a very cool view.

Today our car was broken into just minutes after we parked our car to see the crocodiles at the Tarcoles River bridge. Car doors were locked but they still found a way to get in and steal our credit card and $400 cash. They rummaged through all of our packs and tried to zip it all back so we would be unaware of the theft. The only reason we knew something was up was because they threw my camera lens into the back seat and forgot to put it back into my camera bag. To our surprise, they left our computers, phones and camera equipment and only took our money and Credit card. Within 90 minutes, they had made $3000 in purchases at the local Walmart. We asked locals why were were lucky with our valuable items and they said their main goal is money and NOT stuff. Once they found the credit card, their main goal was buying time to rack up purchases… which is why they didn’t steal our stuff. I’m a veteran traveler, traveling outside the US 3+ weeks a year and still fell victim. Warning! Don’t leave cars unattended in Costa rica for any reason… and take valuables out with you.

While visiting in February 2018 we stopped here to use the restrooms n grab a drink. I was astonished to find out and see that these crocodiles live under the bridge. What a Amazing time! These creatures were mesmerizing to watch! There was a Tico that was telling us story’s about how this guy was flying his drone over them, of course to capture up close videos. He said one of the crocodiles jumped up out of the water and caught the drone n that was the end of his drone people think they are slow moving Nope!! It’s a fun place to stop and take Beautiful pictures. I’m happy we stopped to use the restrooms! Happy Crocodile watching, it’s worth the stop Pura Vida Costa Rica

April 8, 2022

Any idea why they hang out there? Just asking for a friend.

April 12, 2022

The locals feed the crocodiles to get them to stay right under the bridge, so that the tourists stop at the bridge to see the crocodiles.

February 8, 2022

Just letting you know and any one else stopping by that the Hacienda NOSAVAR is no longer there. There’s two larger restaurants on both sides of the highway and lots of little shops afterwards but none that look like they have a view of the river. Crocs are still there 😀

February 10, 2022

hi Sam, thanks for the feedback, looks like they moved the restaurant onto the other side.

Can you suggest any other good places to stop at when travelling from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio? Thank you!

Is this bridge worth driving out of your way to if you going from the San Jose Airport to Manual Antonio?

February 9, 2018

What a ride! We saw beautiful birds, but the amount and size of the crocodiles was amazing! Keep your hands in the boat!!!

February 13, 2017

I am in Monteverde and want to go to the beaches (Manuel Antonio etc) next. I also would love to see these crocs. They offer a shuttle including the tarcolis for $159,- That is 109,- more then the just the shuttle to Manuel. I figured it might be cheaper to go from Manuel to the crocs myself. Do you have any suggestion?

Is that with a tour down the Tarcoles river? Or you just want to stop at the bridge and see the crocs because an extra $109 just to stop and see the crocodiles is a lot. The river boat tour down Tarcoles river is $55 with transportation when you book the tour with the company like Jose’s Crocodile Tour. You could take the bus instead which is cheaper and take the bus from Monteverde to Puntarenas, Puntarenas to Jaco and then take the crocodile river tour from Jaco. And then you can take a bus from Jaco to Manuel Antonio easily.

I read in the news that someone fell( or jump) off the bridge and was met with the unthinkable fate of eaten alive by the crocs. Not a place I want to hang out for long. Sorry to hear about this person’s misfortune.

I’d love to see all these crocodiles in the wild! They always *seem* harmless because they hardly move…yes, i really just said that haha

April 23, 2014

Haha I agree, they are cool to look at… from a distance lol

Globalmouse says

Oh my goodness they are SO scary!!! I would love to see them in the wild like this but I would be so scared….those terrible little teeth!! Your photos are brilliant.

Thanks! I know the upclose picture of the one with all their teeth hanging out… I would not want to be in between those!

Wow, the crocodiles! So many in one place! Would love to see that!

It’s pretty cool!

Katie @ From Shores to Skylines says

April 18, 2014

I love that picture of the croc walking – it looks so awkward, but you know its deadly! The rest kind of remind of one of those Indiana Jones movies with all the crocodiles waiting at the bottom of the river to gobble you up. I can’t believe the guides get out and feed them – that sounds about as safe as a swim would be.

I know right? They are crazy! But I guess they love it and it does give a great thrill. No thank you for me though, I will be watching several (hundred) feet away!

April 17, 2014

Scary, scary, SCARY. Amazing that they have endured since prehistoric times.

I know isn’t that crazy? All those teeth… scary!

April 16, 2014

I hate to pick on your number but I have to say 25/mxm is not possible but more like 25/kmxkm. They sure look big in your photo. Each is probably over 2 meters long and weighs more than 100 kilos. Amazing sight to see so many crocs in one place. I am glad I was not there to do bridge survey when the bridge was built.

Thanks Dad 🙂

Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge: A Stop to See Crocs

  • Jenn and Matt
  • Activities , Family Travel

If you are visiting Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast, a fun stop between destinations is the famous Tarcoles River crocodile bridge. This bridge has giant crocodiles sunbathing and swimming below. You can park right off the main highway and walk onto the bridge to see them for yourself. This is a perfect, free activity to help break up a long drive. In this post, we’ll give you all the details to plan a stop.

Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge

The Tarcoles River crocodile bridge is located on Route 34, a mostly two-lane highway that runs from north to south along Costa Rica’s central and southern Pacific coast.

The bridge is a convenient stop on the way to destinations like Jaco , Manuel Antonio , Dominical, and Uvita .

From the San Jose Airport (SJO), the drive to the bridge is about 1-1.25 hours, depending on traffic. Jaco is about 30 minutes south and Manuel Antonio is about 1.5 hours from the bridge.

As the name implies, the Tarcoles River crocodile bridge crosses the Tarcoles River. This wide river flows all the way from the mountains in Costa Rica’s Central Valley before emptying into the Gulf of Nicoya/Pacific Ocean.

The Tarcoles River is most famous for its crocodiles but sadly is also known as one of the country’s most polluted rivers. This is largely because its headwaters start in Costa Rica’s most populated areas. Regardless, the river is beautiful and teeming with birds and of course many crocodiles.

Tarcoles River Costa Rica

Arriving and Parking at the Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge

When arriving at the Tarcoles River crocodile bridge (from the north going south), you’ll see a cluster of souvenir shops and small restaurants just before the bridge. This is where you will park.

Often a parking attendant will help you pull in and find a spot. These attendants work for tips. It is customary to give them some change or a small bill when leaving (around 500 colones or about $1).

Tip: Even though the parking attendants are around and can watch your car to some extent, there is a lot of coming and going in the area. If you are traveling with your luggage, we recommend taking turns walking onto the bridge so that someone stays with the car, just to be safe. In the past, car break-ins were very common here. The situation has improved but it could still happen.

Parking at Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge

Walking Onto the Crocodile Bridge

Both sides of the Tarcoles River crocodile bridge have sidewalks and railings now so you can walk out safely without interfering with traffic. Cars and trucks usually slow down over the bridge but use caution as you will still be very close to the busy highway.

It is also important to note that the railings have a lot of space between them where young kids could slip through. Be careful with small children or just skip it altogether.

Each side of the bridge offers a different view of the river. Both are worth checking out. Just be sure to walk back towards the parking area to cross over and don’t try to jump over the concrete barriers. Cars can appear quickly!

During busy tourist months, holidays, and weekends, the bridge can get busy but is usually not too crowded. Since the bridge is long and most people only spend 10-15 minutes looking at the crocodiles, there is usually plenty of space.

Tourists on Crocodile Bridge

The Crocodiles

The crocodiles found in the Tarcoles River are American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus). These can reach up to 20 feet (6.1 meters) long and weigh up to 2,000 pounds (907 kg)! Though some giant ones frequent the bridge, many are about 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) long.

Crocodile under Tarcoles River Bridge

In our experience, most of the crocodiles can be seen from the middle part of the bridge on either side. They are down below in the river, about 30-40 feet (9-12 meters) away.

Which side of the bridge has more crocodiles depends on the time of year and rainfall. During our last visit, the water was higher so most of the crocodiles were perched in the water. On other visits when the water was lower, we have seen more crocs sunbathing in clusters on the riverbanks.

Crocodile in Rio Tarcoles

Feeding the Crocs

Though it may sound fun, it is important not to toss any food down to the crocodiles. The wrong diet can be bad for them. Equally important, it is forbidden by Costa Rican law to feed them.

The crocodiles have plenty to eat and naturally prey on birds, small-to-medium sized mammals, turtles, crabs, snails, frogs, and anything else they might find in or around the river.

Amenities at the Crocodile Bridge

In addition to the main attraction (the crocodiles), this area has developed into a tourism rest stop in recent years, with some useful amenities. There are a couple of small sodas (local restaurants), a Pops ice-cream shop, coffee shop, a few souvenir stands, a fruit stand, and two small convenience stores.

For those needing a restroom break, the restaurants will allow customers to use the bathrooms. Or if you aren’t eating, there is a separate bathroom behind the plaza on the far left. They charge a small fee (about 500 colones/$1).

Souvenir Shops at the Tarcoles River

Getting a Closer Look

If gazing at the crocodiles from up on the bridge isn’t enough and you want a closer view, there is a way. Crocodile tours are available in the nearby town of Tarcoles (10 minutes away).

Crocodile tours bring you along the Tarcoles River on a covered boat. You’ll get very up close and personal with many crocodiles and be able to see the river’s exotic bird species as well. Tours last about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

To learn more about a crocodile tour we recommend out of Tarcoles, read our post, A Riverboat Adventure on the Tarcoles River .

Close up Crocodile on Boat Tour

A stop at the Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge is a great way to stretch your legs and break up a long drive. This was one of the first stops we ever made when we began to explore Costa Rica many years ago. We hope you’ll add it to your adventure too.

The Famous Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge at the Tarcoles River

If you are looking to see larger than life crocodiles in Costa Rica, I insist you make a stop at the famous Tarcoles River!  This is on the way to Playa Jaco, Manuel Antonio, and the South Pacific, so if your Costa Rica itinerary has you heading that way, you may as well take a few moments to check out this very well known river.

As an aside, about 16 years ago, when I was on my way to Los Suenos Resort , I was feeding these crocodiles from the bridge and my footage was featured on Animal Planet!  While that is now banned, I enjoyed my moment in the sun and was one of many who lowered chickens to watch the massive crocodiles of Costa Rica battle for a meal.

Here’s a video overview of the famous crocodiles! Please subscribe to our YouTube channel for more videos like this one.

Key Takeaways

  • Experience the American crocodile in its natural habitat at Crocodile Bridge Costa Rica, with diverse wildlife and nearby attractions.
  • Follow safety precautions to have a safe and responsible visit, while supporting local businesses for sustainable tourism.
  • Choose from different tour options or transportation methods like renting a car or taking public transport to get there.

What to Know About the Tarcoles River

This river spans over 2,000 kilometers and leads right to the Pacific Ocean.  It’s beginning is where two unique rivers join forces which creates the border to one side of the Carara National Park.

It’s wild to me that wildlife thrives in this river due to the contamination that exists in the Tarcoles River.  However, on the bright side, the river assists in irrigating agricultural lands and acts as a method to generate electricity.  (Lake Arenal is man-made and serves the same purpose.)

There have been many programs launched from the government down to the locals to help clean up the Tarcoles River, but it’ll be a long process due to several years of contamination.  You won’t want to even entertain the thought of swimming here due to pollution, but putting that aside, I’ve heard stories of locals getting drunk and attempting to swim across it only to be devoured by crocodiles.

*** DO NOT ENTER THIS RIVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. ***

With that disclaimer, make sure to check out the famous Costa Rica crocodile bridge and see something you won’t soon forget.

The Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge, also known as the Tarcoles River Bridge or ‘puente de cocodrilo’, is a sight to behold. This highway bridge, located on the Carretera Pacfica Fernández Oreamuno, provides visitors with a unique opportunity to observe one of nature’s most formidable predators—the American crocodile—in action. The bridge overlooks the Tarcoles River, home to the world’s highest population of crocodiles. This intriguing wildlife spectacle has turned the bridge into a significant tourist destination.

Dozens of these prehistoric beasts can be spotted lounging in the river below from the bridge’s vantage point.

Wildlife at Tarcoles River

While the star attraction of the Tarcoles River is undoubtedly the American crocodile, the river’s ecosystem is teeming with other fascinating creatures as well, including the spectacled caiman. Expect to see a diverse array of wildlife like birds, iguanas, and other reptiles that have made the river their home.

The American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus), also known as huge crocodiles, are the undisputed kings of the Tarcoles River. They typically range in size from 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) long. Despite the river being one of the most polluted in Costa Rica, these resilient predators thrive. They feed on a varied diet that includes:

  • small-to-medium sized mammals

This is a testament to the rich biodiversity of the Tarcoles River.

The Importance of the Tarcoles River

Despite its pollution, the Tarcoles River supports a broad range of wildlife and irrigates agricultural lands, marking its significance. It’s located near popular tourist destinations like Manuel Antonio National Park , making it a hub of biodiversity in the region.

Unfortunately, the river is highly contaminated due to urban development and untreated sewage from Costa Rica’s central valley, making it one of the polluted rivers in the region. The pollution affects the wildlife and ecosystem, potentially causing sickness in animals and threatening biodiversity. Despite these challenges, many species, including crocodiles, continue to thrive, underscoring the resilience of nature.

Planning Your Visit to Crocodile Bridge

Planning your visit to the Crocodile Bridge can enhance your experience, regardless of whether you’re a seasoned wildlife enthusiast or a curious traveler. Knowing about the location, accessibility, visiting hours, and fees associated with visiting the bridge can help you make the most of your trip.

The Crocodile Bridge is located on Route 34, near the town of Tarcoles. It’s completely wheelchair-accessible, ensuring everyone can enjoy this unique spectacle. Best of all, you don’t have to worry about entrance fees—you can visit the Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge absolutely free of charge!

Location and Accessibility

The Crocodile Bridge is located approximately 73 kilometers (45 miles) from San Jose , near Hacienda NOSAVAR, over the Tarcoles River—a prime location for wildlife enthusiasts. It’s a straightforward drive of about an hour and 20 minutes from San Jose, depending on traffic.

To reach the bridge from San Jose, the best route is to take Route 1, then Route 27 towards Jaco and Puntarenas, and finally drive on Route 34, where the bridge is located. If you’re already in Jaco, you’re just a quick 20-minute drive north from the thrill of the Crocodile Bridge.

Visiting Hours and Fees

One of the perks of visiting the Crocodile Bridge is that there are no specific visiting hours. However, for the best viewing experience, mornings and early afternoons are recommended.

While the bridge itself is free to visit, parking can be a consideration. There are free parking options available, but be aware of nearby restaurants that might charge for parking. If you’re traveling with luggage, consider taking turns to walk on the bridge, leaving one person with the car at all times. Alternatively, you can negotiate with nearby vendors—perhaps agreeing to purchase a smoothie or meal after your visit—in return for parking fees.

Safety Precautions and Responsible Tourism

While the visit to the Crocodile Bridge is an exciting adventure, prioritizing your safety and the welfare of the wildlife is essential. Here are some safety precautions to observe and promote responsible tourism:

  • Keep an eye on your car’s security.
  • Stay alert on the bridge and avoid leaning over the railing.
  • Do not feed or provoke the crocodiles.
  • Respect the Costa Rican wildlife and their natural habitat.
  • Follow any instructions or guidelines provided by park staff.

By following these safety precautions, you can have a safe and enjoyable experience at the Crocodile Bridge.

Feeding the crocodiles is a big no-no. Not only does it disrupt their natural behavior and diet, but it’s also against the law in Costa Rica. Keeping a safe distance from the crocodiles and not engaging in risky behavior such as hanging off the bridge or climbing over the railing is fundamental to ensuring your safety.

Dos and Don’ts

A few basic rules need to be followed when visiting the Crocodile Bridge. Avoid risky behavior such as hanging off the bridge or climbing over the railing—these actions can put you in danger and disturb the wildlife. Adults should also keep an eye on children at all times to avoid any accidents.

Moreover, never attempt to feed the crocodiles. This disrupts their natural behavior, is harmful to their health, and contravenes the Costa Rican law. By respecting these dos and don’ts, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable visit, contributing to the preservation of this unique wildlife spectacle.

Supporting Local Businesses

Besides observing wildlife, visiting the Crocodile Bridge also presents an opportunity to support local businesses. Nearby, you’ll find several restaurants offering delicious local cuisine. One such place is Hacienda NOSAVAR (Restaurant Nambi), which is highly recommended.

Purchasing local crafts and wildlife-related souvenirs is another way to support the local economy. These actions help stimulate local job creation, boost spending, and foster community development in Tarcoles, ultimately contributing to sustainable tourism.

You can take a public bus from San Jose to Tarcoles, then grab a taxi to the bridge. Alternatively, tourist shuttles offer comfortable, air-conditioned rides from selected hotels and San Jose Airport.

Don’t Miss the Crocodile Bridge in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a haven for nature enthusiasts. Its lush rainforests, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes are a treat for families and individual travelers alike.

One of the most exciting experiences is a visit to the legendary Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge. The bridge crosses the Tarcoles River and is a well-known stopping point between San Jose and popular beach towns.

You’ll be amazed by the sheer quantity of American crocodiles that inhabit the waters below. The prehistoric-looking creatures are not only intimidating to look at, they’re huge!

The Tarcoles River has the highest population of crocodiles in the world. The massive reptiles can reach lengths of up to 15 feet. Many live to be 90 years old.

Getting to the Crocodile Bridge with Adobe

Getting to the famous bridge in Costa Rica with crocodiles is easy with Adobe Rent a Car. From our San Jose Airport rental office , the drive is usually under two hours. Most of the trip is on the major Highway 27 and Highway Route 34.

Known as the Costanera Sur, Route 34 serves as the gateway to the Central and South Pacific coast beach towns. Playa Herradura, Jaco Beach, Manuel Antonio, Dominical, and the Osa Peninsula are favorite Pacific Coast destinations.

It is not necessary to rent a 4WD vehicle to visit the Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge. An Adobe sedan, such as the Hyundai Verna , or similar, offers fuel economy and an affordable daily rate.

If you plan to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, play it safe and rent a 4×4 or 2WD SUV. Our most popular car types in these categories are the 4WD Suzuki Vitara or the Geely GX3 2WD SUV.

The added traction and lift are helpful assets when driving the coast’s steep and winding side roads.

Adventure on the Tarcoles River

Not only are the huge crocodiles beneath the bridge a thrilling site, but the entire river valley is beautifully scenic. The river borders the Carara National Park. Both the bridge and the park are open year-round to visitors.

Carara Biological Reserve has the largest scarlet macaw population in the region. The park harbors a variety of ecosystems and river habitats. It is a favorite among birders for its vast number of bird species and other wildlife.

Unfortunately, Tarcoles is Costa Rica’s most polluted river. Nonetheless, it is home to countless species of birds, reptiles, and animals. The government and private organizations are working hard to clean the river for the benefit of both humans and wildlife.

Seeing the crocodiles in Costa Rica bridge

Because the Tárcoles River is just north of Jaco Beach, most travellers to Costa Rica make a quick stop before continuing on. If you plan to do the same, make sure to park at one of the guarded parking areas.

Remember to always close your windows and lock your vehicle no matter where you travel in Costa Rica. And make sure your valuables are out of site. Although petty theft isn’t common, it’s always best to be careful.

We recommend visiting Rio Tarcoles like the Costa Ricans do. Stop and enjoy the local restaurants and souvenir stores bordering the river. It’s a great way to feel the Pura Vida spirit of Costa Rica while enjoying homemade traditional cuisine.

There are pedestrian walkways on either side of the bridge with guardrails. However, be extremely careful when crossing, as drivers move fast along the highway.

It’s also extremely important that you stay on the bridge and not stray down to the river below. The crocs may look like they’re dozing, but they move fast and can be aggressive.

Don’t miss the Rio Tarcoles Crocodile Tour

If you love nature and can’t get enough of seeing giant crocs, don’t miss the Rio Tarcoles Crocodile Tour. Believe it or not, many visitors think the tour is the best part of the trip!

Crocodile Boat Tours originate in the small local town of Tarcoles. The town entrance is about a five-minute drive south of the bridge on Route 34.

The Tarcoles River originates in the central Cordillera Mountain range. It runs a total of 111 kilometers (69 miles) before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. Its watershed covers a massive 2,121 square miles.

Countless reptiles and over 300 species of birds live in the habitats within and surrounding the river. The best way to witness these fabulous creatures is on the Crocodile Tour.

What to expect on the Tarcoles Crocodile Tour

Tours depart from the Tarcoles dock in the early morning and afternoon. Guests will board a traditional panga river boat with open sides and a roof in case of rain.

The tour winds slowly up the wide Tarcoles River. Mangrove swamps and narrow islands are visited so passengers can spot wildlife.

Among the river residents are American crocodiles, common basilisk lizards, caiman, iguanas, and hundreds of bird species. Each tour is guided by a bilingual guide who points out interesting landmarks andcreatures along the riverbanks.

Among the bird species are pelicans, herons, boatbills, egrets, and kingfishers. Don’t forget your binoculars and a camera to make the most of the trip.

Depending on the tide, it’s usually possible to float up to the Tarcoles Bridge. The sandy shores of the river are a popular hangout for dozens of crocodiles.

Some tours are more exciting than others. Many guides bring along chunks of raw chicken to entice the crocodiles to come closer to the tour boats. Feeding wildlife is prohibited, however, so you may not experience this scary feat.

Enjoy an unforgettable day in Costa Rica with Adobe Rent a Car. The crocs are waiting!

Zhang Yimou and MGM 2049

Leading Chinese film director Zhang Yimou has been announced as chief director of “ MGM 2049 ,” pitched as “an unprecedented residency show” in Macau .

Zhang, who is known for films including “Raise the Red Lantern,” “Hero” and “Full River Red,” is also established as one of the world’s foremost directors of spectacular, large-scale stage productions. His credits include the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing , “The First Emperor,” with Tan Dun at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and an equestrian-themed outdoor show held 3,000 meters above seas level in China’s Yunnan Province.

Working with Zhang will be Wu Tong, music director and crossover musician; Sang Jijia, dance director and resident choreographer of the City Contemporary Dance Company in Hong Kong; Dominic Faraway, visual director; and Bernard Prentice, underwater cinematographer.

The show’s title is a reference to Macau’s handover by former colonial power Portugal, which occurred in 1999, and to 2049 which will mark the end of Macau’s status as a ‘Special Administrative Region’ and its full integration into the People’s Republic of China.

The show “serves not only as a grand tribute to the 75th anniversary of the founding of the PRC and the 25th anniversary of Macau’s return to the Motherland, but also as a catalyst to propel the city’s cultural and entertainment sectors towards new heights,” said an MGM spokesperson. “The objectives of ‘MGM 2049’ are to tap into youth power to further foster the development of Macau as the ‘City of Performing Arts,’ establishing an epitome of cultural tourism within the Greater Bay Area [Hong Kong, Macau and the southern cities of China], and promoting Chinese culture to the world.”

Macau is no stranger to huge-scale stage spectaculars. Its various casino resorts have previously hosted “The House of Dancing Water” and “Zaia,” a 90-minute Cirque du Soleil show.

Zhang has been honored with lifetime achievement awards at last year’s Tokyo International Film Festival and last month’s Asian Film Awards . He will be the guest of honor at the Far East Film Festival in Italy’s Udine at the end of the month.
