Port Sydney cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Sydney, NSW Australia. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Sydney Cruise Port is the busiest Australian homeport and ship travel destination. Sydney Harbour itself is a scenic destination with a lot of boat tours. The city's best-known attractions are the futuristic-designed Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The 1932-opened arch bridge carries all the traffic (rail, vehicles, bicycles, pedestrian) between the CBD (city's central business district) and North Shore's suburbs.

The cruise industry is Australia's fastest-growing economic sector with worth ~AUD 5 billion to the NSW alone. It supports over 20,000 local jobs. ISeason 2015-2016 statistics showed 325 cruise ship visits to NSW.

Port Sydney NSW

All Sydney's seaport facilities are managed by Sydney Ports Corporation - an NSW Government-owned company also responsible for the seaport's development and facilities within Sydney Metro. Two more (smaller) ports are in Eden and Yamba.

In April 2013, the NSW Government announced granted a 99-year lease (until 2112) to the NSW Ports Consortium for AUD 4,31 billion. The lease was granted together with a lease for Port Kembla for AUD 760 million. Of the sale proceeds, over AUD 2 billion were allocated for road infrastructure projects.

Under Sydney Ports Corporation management are the following ports:

• Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour) with 11 berths serving dry and liquid bulk carriers, general cargo ships, cruise terminal (Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay).
• Port Botany (Botany Bay, approx 13 km / 8 mi south of city's central business district) has a terminal for liquid bulk carriers, a storage facility and 2 container terminals.
• Port Enfield (Logistics Centre) has a freight railway connecting it with Port Botany.
• Port St Peters houses the Cooks River Rail Depot and a Container Park.
• Since 2011, Sydney Ports Corporation also manages Port Eden and Port Yamba.

On April 9, 2018, the new China-built gantry crane (by ZPMC / "Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries") was delivered at Sydney Container Terminal. Same ZPMC cranes (serving large container ships ) were also delivered and installed in Brisbane (one, in April) and Melbourne (two, in March).

• The equipment (a total of 9 gantry cranes) was ordered by DP World Australia (Australia's main and largest container port and supply chain operator) to serve the country's container terminals. By this USD 180 million project were also delivered 20x straddle trucks, 4x RTGs (rubber-tyred gantry cranes), 38x forklifts (industrial trucks).
• Each of the 9x ZPMC cranes costs USD 14 million, has rated capacity 65 tons (under spreader) and 75 tons (under heavy lift beam), rail gauge 25,3 m, above rail hoist height 38 m, hoist speed 90 m per min (loaded) and 180 m / min (unloaded).

Sydney NSW cruise port

The port's cruise schedule has ships operating on Cruises to Nowhere , roundtrip itineraries to ports in Queensland, Tasmania, New Zealand and South Pacific Islands (New Caledonia, Fiji, Vanuatu). Longer (repositioning) cruises go to ports in Asia (some all the way to China and Japan) and North America (via Honolulu Hawaii ).

On November 27, 2015, in Sydney Harbour met two of the largest Australia-homeported cruise ships - RCI Royal Caribbean 's vessels Explorer of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas , carrying over 10,000 passengers and crew. The Explorer was finishing a 16-night Australia and New Zealand itinerary from Fremantle-Perth , while the Voyager started a 7-night itinerary to Melbourne . Both ships are from RCI's Voyager-class series, with gross tonnage 138,194 tons and LOA length 311 m (1020 ft), For season 2015-2016, RCI had all 4 ships - plus the couple Radiance of the Seas (homeport Sydney) and Legend of the Seas (homeport Brisbane, currently operates as Marella Discovery 2 for Marella UK) . With this fleet, Royal Caribbean made a total investment of over USD 280 million in the Australian market.

In 2017, RCI extended the second season (2017-2018) of the ever largest Australia-homeported ship - Ovation of the Seas - by additional 6 cruises or 5 weeks homeporting in Sydney. Ovation was scheduled to make a total of 9 itineraries during the liner's 2nd Sydney-based season (departures November 2017 through February 2018). The newly added roundtrips in 2018 were: 8-night "South Pacific" (departure February 18), 10-night to New Zealand (departures February 26, March 13), 5-night to Tasmania (departure March 8), 3-night sampler Cruise to Nowhere (departure March 23) and the 14-night repositioning cruise to Singapore (departure March 26). The mega liner arrived for the first time in Sydney on December 15, 2016. and was scheduled to leave the homeport on January 23, 2017 and return to China. However, as the large cruise ship had exceeded all the Royal Caribbean Australia's expectations, they decided to add the 4 extra itineraries to meet the market's demand.

For season 2017-2018, Australia's fastest-growing tourism sector suffered a blow with major consequences for NSW's economy as cruise shipping companies started to bypass Port Sydney in favour of Melbourne , Brisbane , Auckland New Zealand and even further (homeporting in Asia instead). The decision for ship re-deploynment was due to Sydney Harbour's Overseas Passenger Terminal incapacity to berth larger vessels.

For season 2017-2018, Australia's 2nd biggest cruise shipping company Royal Caribbean redeployed Voyager of the Seas to Singapore and China for year-round turnaround operations. RCI's ship Radiance of the Seas was also re-scheduled to not stop in Sydney, replacing the port of call with Melbourne and New Zealand. With just Voyager OTS, Port Sydney lost around 65,000 guests a year, which was estimated at approx AUD 32 million in passenger spending.

Australia's biggest cruise shipping company - Carnival Australia , represents a group of 7 brands on the market, the largest of which are P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises . A Carnival also struggles to berth in Sydney NSW, the company moved some of its vessels to Brisbane and Melbourne. For 2018, Carnival Legend had scheduled all 10 itineraries leaving roundtrip from Melbourne. Another Carnival Corporation -owned company - Cunard , was willing to homeport the ship Queen Elizabeth in Sydney for a record -2 month-long Australian season (February through April 2019) - Cunard's ever longest season in Australia. However, while the Cunard's preference was to homeport the ship in Sydney, due to unavailable berths, 3 of the pre-scheduled itineraries were changed for roundtrips from Melbourne.

• Among the suggested solutions for this crisis was for cruise ships to share access to Garden Island with the Royal Australian Navy. Previously, Royal Caribbean (RCCL) was willing to invest tens of millions of dollars in building a new cruise terminal in Botany Bay.
• Season 2017-2018 was the cruise port's record year with scheduled a total of 90 ship visits and over 130,000 passengers and crew. The estimated economic impact was around AUD 30 million.

In March 2022, the NSW government announced plans to upgrade Sydney Harbour with shore-power capabilities . The technology was scheduled to be installed at the facilities White Bay Cruise Terminal and Glebe Island and the facilities to be ready and operational in 2024. For this project wee allocated $60+ million, including for infrastructure upgrades. Shoreside power systems allow the berthed vessels to turn off their diesel engines and use the city grid's electricity for all onboard operations and hotel services.

Sydney cruise terminal

Sydney Harbour (port locode AUSYD) is one of the top cruise ports in the world. It is located on the eastern Australian coast with the Blue Mountains on the west.

Sydney Harbour (aka Port Jackson) has attracted visitors, settlers, business men and traders for a long time. The city of Sydney has a population of more than 4 million and it is the biggest Ozzie city. The harbor has two cruise terminals – the White Bay and the Overseas Passenger Terminal. Three cruise ships can anchor at the same time at Sydney Cruise port terminals.

(NEW) Yarra Bay Cruise Terminal

For 2020 was planned to start the construction works for a new passenger terminal at Yarra Bay (east of Sydney Harbour Bridge). However, these plans were temporary suspended (for 18 months) due to the global Coronavirus pandemic. The health crisis seriously impacted Australia (Sydney mostly) and resulted in worldwide shutdown of all cruise shipping operations.

The Yarra Bay project is an initiative of RCCL-Royal Caribbean, with co-funding from the NSW Government.

White Bay Cruise Terminal

White Bay cruise terminal operates since 2013. It is transformed ro-ro (grain) terminal. The Sydney cruise port terminal is open and large, capable to process more than 2000 tourists. Next to White Bay there is a drop off areas and a short time park zone. The Sydney cruise port terminal can accommodate two vessels at the same time – at pier 4 and pier 5. White Bay is close to the center of Sydney and close to Sydney Harbour Bridge. That makes it unavailable for the biggest cruise vessels due to under Sydney Harbour Bridge height restrictions.

Overseas Passenger Terminal

The second Sydney Cruise port terminal is situated at the Circular Quay. It is very close to main sights in Sydney, just across the Opera House. The building is a modern one with a lot of facilities.

The Overseas Passenger Terminal offers also a breathtaking Sydney Harbour view. The terminal serves larger cruise ships.

The NSW's capital city Sydney is among the high-ranked for quality of life cities and one of the most beautiful vacation travel destinations to visit, so try not to miss:

• The Rocks: historical area with cafes, bars, shops, restaurants and galleries. Explore the Campbells Storehouse, Susannah Place, the Merchants House and Cadman’s Cottage. Next to Circular Quay. Is the Rocks area.
• Sydney Opera House: located on the Sydney Harbor at Bennelong Point. Jørn Utzon is the designer of this world architectural wonder. Its opening was in 1973. It is near the Overseas Passenger Terminal and there you can enjoy amazing opera or ballet performances.
• Royal Botanic Gardens: a green oasis located between the busy downtown and the blue ocean.
• Sydney Harbour Bridge: see the Pylon Lookout or participate in the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb.
• Bondi Beach is great for surfing. Enjoy that beautiful white-sand beach just 45 min away from Circular Quay (by bus 380).

Every year, Australians gather around the country to commemorate all defence personnel who have served and sacrificed their lives in armed conflicts.

This year’s Anzac Day commemoration will mark 110 years since World War 1 began on July 28, 1914.

Each state and territory marks the day by holding Dawn Services, sunset services and marches through their respective major cities.

Here is a complete rundown of all the major events taking place in Sydney this week.

WHAT IS ANZAC DAY AND WHY IS IT CELEBRATED?

Anzac Day is a day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that commemorates all service members in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, otherwise known by the acronym ANZAC.

It is meant to commemorate the anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli in Turkey on April 25, 1915.

WHAT HAPPENS IN SYDNEY FOR ANZAC DAY?

Commemorative services are held across Sydney, with the main Dawn Service centring on Martin Place and the Cenotaph memorial.

Later in the morning at 9am, the traditional Anzac Day march takes place between Martin Place and Hyde Park, with streets lined by people paying tribute to the Diggers. The march will finish at Liverpool St at 12:30pm.

Once the march has taken place, a commemorative service will be held at the Pool of Remembrance at the ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park at 12:30pm.

The day concludes with a sunset service at the Cenotaph in Martin Place at 5pm.

WHAT TIME IS THE DAWN SERVICE IN SYDNEY FOR ANZAC DAY?

The dawn service will begin at 4:15am in Martin Place and the Cenotaph memorial. Audiences are able to stand on George St and watch the proceedings unfold on setup TV screens, as the area fills up quickly around 3-3:30am.

ARE SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS OPEN FOR ANZAC DAY?

Supermarkets: All Coles and Woolworths stores will open after 1pm, with individual ALDI stores offering various opening hours.

Bottle shops: All Liquorland stores will be open with reduced trading hours excluding Liquorland West Gosford, while all Dan Murphy stores will open at 1:15pm. The majority of BWS stores will trade from 1pm.

Clothing/goods shops: Big W will open with reduced hours, while most Kmart stores will open after 1:30pm. Shoppers can also visit Bunnings and Westfield locations from 1pm.

WHY ARE POPPIES A SYMBOL OF ANZAC DAY ?

The red poppy holds symbolic significance for Anzac Day, as they were among the first to flower in the battlefields of Belgium and northern France in World War 1.

Many people also wear a sprig of Rosemary, which is a herb that grows on the Turkish peninsula in Gallipoli. It’s also a symbol of fidelity and remembrance.

WILL PUBLIC TRANSPORT BE RUNNING ON ANZAC DAY?

According to Transport NSW, any participants or spectators are encouraged to plan ahead and leave their car at home as many major roads will be closed with parking restrictions in effect for most of the day.

Public transport travel will be free for veterans and their families, with additional early morning public transport services running within walking distance of The Dawn Service and the march.

Trains: Additional early morning trains will run from 2:36am on suburban lines and from 12:37am on NSW TrainLink Intercity lines.

The closest station to the Dawn Service is Martin Place on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line. Catch a train to Town Hall and change for a service to Martin Place leaving from Platform 5. Alternatively, catch a train to Wynyard and walk to Martin Place.

The closest stations to the March along Elizabeth Street are Martin Place, St James and Town Hall stations. After the March finishes at 1pm, trains will run to a regular Sunday timetable to get you back home.

Buses: Buses will run to a public holiday timetable with additional early-morning services starting from 2.30am on key routes into the city from the Northern Beaches, Lower North Shore, Inner West, Hills District, Lane Cove, Macquarie Park, Eastern Suburbs and Victoria Road.

Buses will be missing stops along and surrounding Martin Place and Elizabeth Street while roads are closed. You will need to walk further than usual to access the Dawn Service and March viewing areas.

Buses in the Sydney CBD will be diverting from their regular routes and using different stops while roads are closed between 5.30am and 4pm on Anzac Day

Ferries: Sydney Ferries will run to a public holiday timetable. Ferry services to Circular Quay don’t run early in the morning on public holidays so you will need to catch a train or bus to get to the Dawn Service instead.

If you plan to catch a ferry to the city for the March, change at Circular Quay for trains to Town Hall, St James or Museum, or change for a light rail service to Town Hall to get within walking distance of Elizabeth Street.

WILL THE ANZAC DAY DAWN SERVICE BE TELEVISED?

The ABC will host broadcast coverage of Anzac Day services and events on April 25th.

The Sydney Dawn Service will be broadcast on ABC TV and ABC NEWS channel and on ABC radio from 4:20am, followed by the Canberra Dawn Service at 5:30am.

The Sydney March will be broadcast on ABC TV and ABC iview from 9am.

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. Why the best way to see Australia is on a cruise

K nown for its epic road and rail trips through the vast, open countryside of the dusty Outback , Australia is often overlooked by Brits as a cruise destination. Yet the world’s largest island has over 37,000 miles of coastline fronting the Southern, Pacific and Indian Oceans, plus various smaller seas. Even the locals know the appeal of the sea, with 85 per cent of Australians living within 50km of the coast.

As a result, almost every kind of cruise imaginable can be found here; be it on a mega-ship with stacks of facilities; a boutique brand with a more refined air; a luxurious riverboat; or an expedition ship that can venture to truly out-of-the-way places. And with most of Australia's key attractions and cities scattered around its fringes, explorations by cruise (preferably topped and tailed with land-based touring) can pack any number of Down Under wonders into a single trip.

I've been lucky enough to visit Australia more than a dozen times, and some of my greatest memories are of experiences that I've had from the deck of a ship. I once set sail to New Zealand from Sydney, with the tiles atop the Opera House gleaming in the sunshine as we passed, and far from land on the Great Barrier Reef, I leaned over the railings to marvel at its underwater patchwork of cobalt and turquoise in an otherwise midnight-blue sea. 

Perhaps the most incredible experience of all was a cruise in the Kimberley : the little-visited wilderness region at the top of Western Australia. It's vast and sparsely populated – bigger than Britain but with fewer residents than a mid-sized English town – and its attractions are so remarkable that they would be crowded with visitors were they easier to access. But on a small-ship sailing with Coral Expeditions, I was one of just 120 guests exploring the waterfalls, reefs and ancient rock art for which the Kimberley is famed.

At the uninhabited Lacepede Islands, we saw seabirds and turtles in mind-boggling numbers. In Talbot Bay, we powered through one-of-a-kind Horizontal Falls in a Zodiac. And at Montgomery Reef, we watched a coral-encrusted plateau seemingly rise from the sea on a falling tide. 

It wasn’t only the epic landscapes and their intriguing wildlife – humpback whales, lemon sharks, saltwater crocs – that impressed. Etched in my memory is the experience of first seeing the Wandjina (ancient rock art). These alien beings stare down from rock art galleries across the region: a symbol of the oldest continuous culture on the planet, and of the Indigenous people's long connection to the land. A land littered with surprises best experienced by boat. 

Classic Kimberley 

Remote, isolated and with little infrastructure for land-based journeys, there are few parts of the world as suited to expedition cruises as the Kimberley. The direct military confrontation between Iran and Israel has brought renewed attention to Iran’s armed forces. What are they capable of?

The start of a direct military confrontation between Iran and Israel has brought renewed attention to Iran’s armed forces. Early this month, Israel attacked a building in Iran’s diplomatic compound in the Syrian capital, Damascus, killing seven of Iran’s senior commanders and military personnel .

Iran vowed to retaliate, and did so about two weeks later, starting a broad aerial attack on Israel on Saturday involving hundreds of drones and missiles aimed at targets inside Israel and the territory it controls.

Here’s a look at Iran’s military and its capabilities.

Why is Iran’s military relevant right now?

Israeli officials had said they would respond to any attack by Iran with a counterattack, which could prompt further retaliation from Iran and possibly expand into a wider regional war. There is even a chance that a conflict of that sort could drag in the United States, although Washington has made clear it had nothing to do with the Damascus attack.

Analysts say that Iran’s adversaries, primarily the United States and Israel, have avoided direct military strikes on Iran for decades, not wishing to tangle with Tehran’s complex military apparatus. Instead, Israel and Iran have been engaged in a long shadow war via air, sea, land and cyberattacks, and Israel has covertly targeted military and nuclear facilities inside Iran and killed commanders and scientists.

“There is a reason Iran has not been struck,” said Afshon Ostovar, an associate professor of national security affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School and an expert on Iran’s military. “It’s not that Iran’s adversaries fear Iran. It’s that they realize any war against Iran is a very serious war.”

What sort of military threat does Iran pose?

The Iranian armed forces are among the largest in the Middle East, with at least 580,000 active-duty personnel and about 200,000 trained reserve personnel divided among the traditional army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, according to an annual assessment last year by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

The army and the Guards each have separate and active ground, air and naval forces, with the Guards responsible for Iran’s border security. The General Staff of the Armed Forces coordinates the branches and sets the overall strategy.

The Guards also operate the Quds Force, an elite unit in charge of arming, training and supporting the network of proxy militias throughout the Middle East known as the “axis of resistance.” These militias include Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, militia groups in Syria and Iraq and Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza.

The commander in chief of Iran’s armed forces is the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the last word on all major decisions.

While the proxy militias are not counted as part of Iran’s armed forces, analysts say they are considered an allied regional force — battle ready, heavily armed and ideologically loyal — and could come to Iran’s aid if it was attacked.

“The level of support and types of systems Iran has provided for nonstate actors is really unprecedented in terms of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles,” said Fabian Hinz, an expert on Iran’s military at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Berlin. “They could be viewed as part of Iran’s military capability, especially Hezbollah, which has the closest strategic relationship with Iran.”

What kinds of weapons does Iran have?

For decades, Iran’s military strategy has been anchored in deterrence, emphasizing the development of precision and long-range missiles, drones and air defenses. It has built a large fleet of speedboats and some small submarines that are capable of disrupting shipping traffic and global energy supplies that pass through the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has one of the largest arsenals of ballistic missiles and drones in the Middle East, Mr. Ostovar said. That includes cruise missiles and anti-ship missiles, as well as ballistic missiles with ranges up to 2,000 kilometers, or more than 1,200 miles. These have the capacity and range to hit any target in the Middle East, including Israel.

In recent years, Tehran has assembled a large inventory of drones with ranges of around 1,200 to 1,550 miles and capable of flying low to evade radar, according to experts and Iranian commanders who have given public interviews to the state news media. Iran has made no secret of the buildup, displaying its trove of drones and missiles during military parades, and has ambitions to build a large export business in drones. Iran’s drones are being used by Russia in Ukraine and have surfaced in the conflict in Sudan.

The country’s bases and storage facilities are widely dispersed, buried deep underground and fortified with air defenses, making them difficult to destroy with airstrikes, experts say.

Where does Iran get its weapons?

International sanctions have cut Iran off from high-tech weaponry and military equipment manufactured abroad, like tanks and fighter jets.

During Iran’s eight-year war with Iraq in the 1980s, few countries were willing to sell weapons to Iran. When Ayatollah Khamenei became Iran’s supreme leader in 1989, a year after the war ended, he commissioned the Guards to develop a domestic weapons industry and poured resources into the effort, which was widely reported in the Iranian news media. He wanted to assure that Iran would never again have to rely on foreign powers for its defense needs.

Today, Iran manufactures a large quantity of missiles and drones domestically and has prioritized that defense production, experts said. Its attempts to make armored vehicles and large naval vessels have met with mixed results. It also imports small submarines from North Korea while expanding and modernizing its domestically produced fleet .

How do other countries see Iran’s military, and what are its weaknesses?

Iran’s military is viewed as one of the strongest in the region in terms of equipment, cohesion, experience and quality of personnel, but it lags far behind the power and sophistication of the armed forces of the United States, Israel and some European countries, experts said.

Iran’s greatest weakness is its air force. Much of the country’s aircraft date from the era of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, who led Iran from 1941 to 1979, and many have been disabled for lack of spare parts. The country also bought a small fleet from Russia in the 1990s, experts said.

Iran’s tanks and armored vehicles are old, and the country has only a few large naval vessels, experts said. Two intelligence gathering vessels, t he Saviz and Behshad, deployed on the Red Sea, have aided the Houthis in identifying Israeli-owned ships for attacks, American officials have said.

Will Israel’s attack disrupt Iran’s military?

The assassinations of the senior military officials are expected to have a short-term impact on Iran’s regional operations, having eliminated commanders with years of experience and relationships with the heads of the allied militias.

Nevertheless, the chain of command for the armed forces inside Iran remains intact, experts say.

A Colorado Rockies coach visited the cockpit of a United flight while at 35,000 feet. Now the FAA is investigating

Federal transportation officials are investigating an unauthorized inflight cockpit visit by a coach for the Colorado Rockies baseball team during a  United Airlines  charter flight last week from Denver to Toronto.

Video surfaced this week that appears to show Rockies hitting coach Hensley Meulens sitting in a pilot’s seat while the April 10 flight was at cruising altitude. It is against federal regulations for unauthorized people to be on the flight deck.

He can be seen and heard on the video joking with other people in the cockpit — including a person in a pilot’s uniform and at least one other person who does not appear to be an airline employee — and says the plane is at 35,000 feet (10,670 meters).

“Flying the plane, here to Toronto,” Meulens says as he gestures toward the person in uniform sitting next to him.

“I’m going to land the plane tonight. So relax,” he says. He then reaches toward the flight controls and pretends to take hold, saying, ”I just press this button … and it goes down.”

Meulens posted the video on social media and later deleted it, but it had already gone viral and was  reposted ,  The Denver Post  reported. He could not be immediately reached for comment through the Rockies’ administrative offices.

United has suffered a series of problems in recent weeks including a piece of  aluminum skin falling off  a plane, a  tire dropping off  another during takeoff, and  an engine fire.  The Federal Aviation Administration has stepped up its oversight of the carrier, and the airline’s CEO has sought to reassure travelers the airline is safe.

A United spokesperson said the airline was conducting its own investigation of the April 10 flight. The airline said the cockpit visit was “a clear violation of our safety and operational policies” and was reported to the Federal Aviation Administration.

“We’re deeply disturbed by what we see in that video, which appears to show an unauthorized person in the flight deck at cruise altitude while the autopilot was engaged,” United spokesperson Russell Carlton said.

The pilots on the flight have been withheld from service while the airline investigates, Carlton said.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Chris Mullooly said the agency was investigating but provided no further details because it’s an open investigation.

“Federal regulations restrict flight deck access to specific individuals,” he said.

The cockpit visit was earlier reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Rockies representatives did not immediately respond to emails and telephone messages seeking comment. Major League Baseball said it was aware and monitoring the Federal Aviation Administration probe.
