Sedan travel guide

Photo of Sedan

Visit Sedan (Grand-Est, France)

The town of Sedan is in the east of the Ardennes department (Champagne-Ardenne region) of France, on the edge of the great forests of the Ardennes and near the country's eastern border.

Explore Sedan

Sedan is officially listed as a 'town of art and history', and the centre of the town is now a protected zone, to ensure that development is controlled and the important patrimony is preserved for the future.

Sedan castle

The medieval Sedan castle dominates the town and is also the most important historical monument here. Built in the 15th century, with the defenses added in the 16th century, the castle covers more than three hectares (seven acres) - apparently it is one of the most extensive castles in the world and the largest chateau-fort in Europe.

The main living quarters in the castle date from the 16th century, but were abandoned for new accommodation in the nearby 'Chateau Bas' (palais des Princes) in the 17th century. Now nicely restored and maintained, Sedan castle is open to the public.

When you visit, as well as the castle and rooms you will also see a film explaining the history of the castle, and several of the rooms have 're-enactments' of their historic role in the castle with life-size mannequins. From the ramparts of the castle you have excellent views across the rooftops of the town.

There is more to Sedan than just a castle however, so be sure to allow some time to explore the rest of the historical centre, including the Palais des Princes mentioned above. A large part of the centre is pedestrianised and there are lots of restaurants.

To see in particular are the many fine town houses in and around the Place du Chateau and the rue de l'horloge and surrounding streets, typically dating from the early 17th century. Moving forward, the 18th century architecture of Sedan is best appreciated in the Rue du Menil.

There are many individual highlights in Sedan, including several churches as well as other buildings relating to its military and industrial history so we highly recommend your first stop is the Sedan tourist office for a map and suggested route to follow when exploring the town.

Attractions nearby

It is true that there are less attractions in the region around Sedan than in certain parts of France, but you will appreciate a visit to the nearby town of Charleville-Mezieres , to see one of the most attractive town squares in France.

10 Best Road-Trip Vehicles That You Can Buy Right Now

CR's tests show that these are the best road-trip models across popular categories

Laughing young people in a car.

Finding the perfect road-trip vehicle means striking a balance among many factors, such as front and rear seat comfort, space, fuel economy, ride quality, and noise. It also should be a vehicle that’s easy to live with when you’re not traveling, and with strong safety and reliability. That is a lot to ask of a single vehicle, but our analysts have scrutinized our test and survey data to find the best road-trip vehicles in 10 popular categories.

To find the standouts, we considered all those factors among models that meet the stringent criteria to be recommended by Consumer Reports . Each vehicle below scores at least average in those factors, plus they provide 500 miles or more of highway cruising range, based on our fuel-economy tests. They also have a sizable trunk or cargo area, based on our measurements. Because of the qualification needed to make a great long-distance runner, we omitted subcompact SUVs and small cars. We also list suitable alternatives, where possible.

All the vehicles featured here, except the Buick, come standard with forward collision warning (FCW) and automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection. (The advanced safety systems are optional on the Buick.)

The 10 models below are road-trip warriors, based on CR data. You can assemble your own list with CR ratings by using our A-to-Z guide . If you’re a Consumer Reports member, the full list is available to you here.

Has Your Car's Value Changed?

Used car values are constantly changing. Edmunds lets you track your vehicle's value over time so you can decide when to sell or trade in.

1. 2016 Volkswagen Golf

If you're looking to hit the highway with a couple of friends and explore a new city or two, a compact hatchback is a smart pick. Compacts are inherently maneuverable and if you can find one with good outward visibility, generous interior space and great fuel economy, you're good to go. You won't find a better embodiment of these qualities than the 2016 Volkswagen Golf.

The Golf offers real space for four adults, or five in a pinch, with a handy 22.8 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seatbacks and an almost SUV-like 52.7 cubic feet with those seatbacks folded down. The large windows afford great sightlines in every direction, while the standard 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces enough power to slingshot you around an on-ramp without much effort. And yet, it gets 29 mpg combined in EPA testing (25 city/36 highway). This is sensible German engineering at its best.

2. 2016 Toyota Prius

If city touring is in your road-trip plans and you need more space than a compact vehicle can offer, check out the midsize 2016 Toyota Prius. It's a top pound-for-pound contender in passenger space and road comfort, not to mention its unbeatable fuel economy.

Go all-in with the Prius Eco model and you'll get ultra-low rolling-resistance tires along with a slight weight reduction, resulting in 56 mpg combined (58 city/53 highway). That extends fueling intervals to a bladder-challenging range somewhere north of 600 miles. Efficiency aside, this Prius is also more comfortable and rewarding to drive than any generation before it. And its midsize dimensions mean there's plenty of space for people and cargo.

3. 2016 Hyundai Genesis

Maybe you're someone who thinks a road trip — even one that takes weeks and a couple hundred miles a day — should not be a test of endurance. If so, a cushy luxury sedan like the 2016 Hyundai Genesis might suit you.

A base price of $39,700 might sound like it's stretching the definition of "affordable," but that's where this Hyundai's exceptional value comes into play. For the money, the Genesis simply can't be matched for feature content or interior quality, and it comes with industry-leading warranty coverage. The standard, smooth-revving 3.8-liter V6 is the smart choice (the optional V8 plays in a different league), and you can specify rear- or all-wheel drive.

4. 2016 Mazda CX-5

Maybe you're tired of the city because you have to live in one for 350 days a year. In that case, the point of a road trip is to get as far away from cities — or even roads themselves — as possible. We're with you.

The 2016 Mazda CX-5 is a winner here. On the pavement, it's downright sporty for a crossover, with impressive fuel economy to boot. But it can also be equipped with a capable all-wheel drive system for mild off-road exploration. While rock-crawling jaunts may be off the table, the versatile CX-5 should provide more overall satisfaction than a single-purpose off-road vehicle.

5. 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata

For the driver whose trip revolves around roads rather than destinations, a sublime connection between car and driver moves to the top of the priority list. Unfortunately, this kind of connection often comes with a monthly payment that looks more like a mortgage. But the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a notable exception.

The Miata provides a lightweight body, a feisty four-cylinder engine, a taut suspension and communicative steering, delivering endless driving fun in a package that's barely big enough to fit two. The cabin may be too cozy for certain body types, and the trunk is limited to 4.6 cubic feet of space, so plan on packing light. But spend just five minutes behind the wheel of the MX-5 and you'll completely understand the appeal.

6. 2017 Ford Mustang Convertible

Summer brings plenty of opportunities to soak up some rays. And if you live in a place that doesn't see sunshine on a regular basis, you'll definitely want to take full advantage of these months.

It's true that the Miata, the No. 5 pick, is a seriously good convertible, but it has real space constraints. So if your passenger and cargo needs are greater, the 2017 Ford Mustang Convertible is another great drop-top option. The Mustang may not be as spry as the Miata, but with double the seats, significantly more trunk capacity and nearly double the horsepower from even the base V6 engine, it compensates nicely in other areas. If you need more power, a turbo four-cylinder and V8 are also available. In any configuration, this is iconic American motoring.

7. 2016 Honda Odyssey

This list would not be complete without today's quintessential road trip vehicle: the minivan. For years, the minivan has provided larger families with a maximally efficient means of traveling together, supplanting the thirsty and unwieldly station wagons.

As in other vehicle segments, there are minivans that stand out from the crowd. Offering seating for up to eight, the 2016 Honda Odyssey is one of our favorites, scoring top marks in interior space and comfort, everyday drivability and even composure around corners. Some high-end features available on the Odyssey include a 12-speaker surround-sound audio system and a 16.2-inch widescreen rear entertainment screen with HDMI connectivity, as well as the industry's first on-board vacuum system. Wrangling the kids could still be a challenge, but convincing them to climb aboard a rolling movie theatre will take far less effort.

8. 2017 Chevrolet Traverse

So you need to haul a lot of people and cargo to faraway places, but you refuse to join the Minivan Alliance. No problem. The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse is a comfortable and unusually spacious three-row SUV that accommodates up to eight passengers and starts at around $30,000.

The Traverse can tow up to 5,200 pounds when properly equipped, which is impressive for a crossover. It also comes with a 288-horsepower V6 engine that can be paired with all-wheel drive. Even with all three seating rows in use, there's still a generous 24.4 cubic feet of cargo space. Folding the second- and third-row seats opens up a whopping 116.3 cubic feet, topping this segment by a wide margin. An all-new Traverse is waiting in the wings and will be substantially smaller, so if you like the road-trip possibilities opened up by that cavernous cabin, grab a current-generation Traverse while you still can.

9. 2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

If the Chevy Traverse's 5,200-pound towing capacity seems puny to you, perhaps the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel's 9,050-lb capacity is more like it. If your road trip involves pulling a trailer, a boat or even a camper, you'll want a truck with enough muscle to make quick work of any route.

The Ram 1500's EcoDiesel V6 provides outstanding fuel economy (20 mpg city/28 highway) along with a healthy 420 pound-feet of torque. The four-door crew cab can seat up to six and is surprisingly pleasant on long hauls thanks to its airy cabin, supportive seats and supple coil-spring rear suspension. Note that the EcoDiesel carries about a $5,000 premium, which nudges even the cheapest diesel-powered crew cab past our price cutoff. But this engine is certainly worth the extra money if towing and fuel economy (or simply extended driving range) are top priorities.

10. 2017 Honda Ridgeline

If you like the utility of a truck but prefer the refined driving character of a car, the 2017 Honda Ridgeline could be the road-trip champion you've been waiting for. Based on the Honda Pilot SUV, the Ridgeline is packed full of versatile features catering to an active lifestyle, so it's a great choice for trips with outdoorsy themes.

The bed of the Ridgeline is where most of the magic happens. A dual-hinged tailgate folds down or swings open from the side to reveal lockable underfloor storage. You can toss your gear in there, or else throw in some drinks and ice to convert it into a fully stocked cooler (the melted ice drains out via a removable plug at the bottom). Also available on top-line models is a 540-watt sound system, paired with the industry's first truck-bed audio system. It makes every stop on your itinerary a party waiting to happen.

10 Best Cars for Road-Tripping on a Budget

Over the river spring line scaled jpg

By Jane Ulitskaya

Memorial Day kickstarts the summer travel season, and despite record-high gas prices , drivers aren’t willing to sacrifice their annual road trips. According to a Cars.com survey , 82% of Americans traveling over the holiday are planning to drive. But rising fuel prices aren’t the only hurdle for shoppers in the market for a vehicle to accommodate their summer travel plans — higher average prices at the dealership can be just as problematic.

Related: What’s the Best New-Car Deal for May 2022?

The median price of a new vehicle among Cars.com dealers was $39,083 in April, up from $36,370 one year prior. At the same time, the typical manufacturer incentives offered over Memorial Day weekend are significantly scaled back due to inventory constraints. According to a J.D. Power sales report , incentives on new cars shrunk to $1,034 in April — down 66% from April 2021.

Despite these challenges, shoppers looking for an affordable road-trip vehicle that minimizes sticker shock at the pump still have options. We compiled the most affordable and fuel-efficient or fuel-free model-year 2022 cars, SUVs, trucks and electric vehicles for summer adventures (and beyond). To make our list, each vehicle’s starting price is in the top 10 most affordable category for its class. Also, gas-powered options get an EPA-rated combined rating of 30 mpg or more and EVs must get at least 200 miles of EPA-estimated range.

Sedans and hatchbacks make excellent road-trip vehicles for small families and light packers. They are also among the most affordable options on the market and offer generous efficiency even without a hybrid or electric powertrain.

Chevrolet Spark

chevrolet spark 2020 oem jpg

Topping the list of budget-friendly road-trip vehicles is the most affordable car on the market. Shoppers interested in the Spark need to act fast, however, since GM plans to end the hatchback’s production in August, according to Automotive News . While it may not be long for this world, traveling long distances in the Spark comes with one big perk: a 33 mpg combined EPA-rating . A word of caution, however. Although the Spark can carry up to four occupants, it’ll be a tight fit for those in the backseat. The 2022 Spark LS with an optional continuously variable automatic transmission starts at $15,695 (all prices include destination charge).

Mitsubishi Mirage

The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage carries a small price premium over the Spark, but it also brings improved fuel efficiency: With an available CVT, the Mirage offers an EPA-rated 39 mpg combined. The Mirage also adds one additional seat in the rear to fit a total of five occupants. Although it can handle a trip to the lake or a staycation around town, the Mirage’s 78-horsepower, 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine paired with the CVT isn’t made for the track — but its handling offers a relatively fun driving experience. The ES hatchback starts at $16,990 and the G4 sedan at $17,990.

sedan travel

If your summer road-trip goals boil down to avoiding jarring road noise and anxiety at the pump, the 2022 Kia Rio delivers on both. Like the Mirage, the Rio seats five and comes in hatchback or sedan variants. The 120-hp, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT gets an EPA-rated 36 mpg combined. Quiet on the highway and with stable handling, the base LX trim comes with an affordable starting price of $17,275. An added bonus is that the Rio gets wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.

SUVs may come with notably higher starting prices than their car counterparts, but they also carry the added benefits of flexible cargo space and a higher ride height for long summer drives. Choosing from the list of the most affordable SUVs with the highest mpg may check all the boxes in the “practical” category of your shopping list.

Hyundai Kona

hyundai kona 2022 05 blue exterior rear angle suv scaled jpg

For being the most affordable SUV on the market, the Hyundai Kona isn’t short on road-trip-friendly features that include standard automatic emergency braking, hands-on lane centering, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with wireless connectivity on the base model’s 8-inch touchscreen. In our review of the 2022 model, we also found it engaging to drive — a rarity for the subcompact SUV class. Plus, the Kona’s 147-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder and front-wheel drive offer an EPA-rated 32 mpg combined, making it a solid choice for weekend getaways. The gas-powered Kona SE starts at $22,395, while an electric variant is sold in select states with a $35,245 starting price.

Chevrolet Trailblazer

The subcompact Trailblazer was introduced in 2021 and offers a surprisingly fun driving experience despite modest power from the base 137-hp, 1.2-liter three-cylinder. It also brings standard wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and active-safety features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning with steering assist. To make it more adventure-friendly, a trailering package and roof rack crossbars are available factory accessories. The Trailblazer is competitive both in fuel economy and price: It gets an EPA-rated 30 mpg combined with standard FWD and starts at $22,795 for the base LS trim.

One of the HR-V’s best features when it comes to road trips is its versatile and roomy interior: The second row offers more space than most subcompact SUVs, and the multiposition second-row Magic Seat can fold flat to offer competitive cargo space for standard luggage or fold up to accommodate taller items. A 141-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder provides power and gets an EPA-rated 30 mpg combined. The base HR-V starts at $23,115; unlike some of its competitors, however, the base model does not offer standard safety features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning or Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Ford Maverick

All-new for 2022, the Ford Maverick is the only pickup truck to make the list of efficient road-trip vehicles with a combined rating of 30 mpg or more.

The base Ford Maverick’s standard gas-electric hybrid powertrain makes 191 hp and is paired with a CVT for an EPA-rated 37 mpg combined. Even though it doesn’t match the full-size F-150’s towing or payload capacity, the compact pickup can hold its own on the road thanks to a sizable cargo bed and towing capacity of up to 4,000 pounds with the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. The Maverick has a $21,490 starting price and earned both our Best of the Year 2022 and Best Pickup Truck of 2022 awards.

Electric Vehicles

If avoiding gas stations entirely is your ideal plan, there are a handful of affordable EVs that can accommodate you. But while filling up at a gas station demands only a quick detour off the highway, road trips in a battery-powered vehicle involve more preparation. It’s important to consider the vehicle’s maximum range — most EVs with the longest range are luxury models that don’t overlap with the most affordable options.

This means mapping out public charging stations along the route will be required for longer trips. The top battery-powered vehicles for road trips offer an EPA-estimated range of 200 miles or more and are offered in all 50 states. Additionally, the Nissan Leaf and Kia Niro EV are still eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit .

Nissan Leaf

The most affordable EV currently available doesn’t just eliminate the concern of rising gas prices, it also bucks the trend of rising vehicle prices. In fact, the 2022 Leaf sees a significant price cut and additional features : the ProPilot Assist safety suite, a 360-degree camera system and a portable Level 2 charging cable. Although the standard Leaf’s 40-kilowatt-hour battery and 147-hp electric motor offer just 149 miles of range per EPA-estimates , the extended-range Leaf Plus brings a more road-trip-worthy 226 miles of range from a 62-kWh battery and 214-hp motor. The standard range Nissan Leaf starts at $28,425, the Leaf Plus at $33,425.

Chevrolet Bolt EV, Bolt EUV

Like the Leaf, the Bolt EV hatchback also sees a price cut for 2022; its starting price is nearly $5,000 less compared to the outgoing model. The redesigned 2022 Bolt EV gets a new interior, more standard safety tech and an all-new and larger Bolt EUV SUV sibling. Both Bolts are powered by a 65-kWh battery and 200-hp single electric motor, but the hatch gets a range advantage with an EPA-estimated 259 miles, compared to the EUV’s 247-mile range. Despite a rocky start for the 2022s with multiple recalls and stop-sale orders, GM has offered a fix and resumed production . The 2022 Bolt EV starts at $32,495 and the 2022 Bolt EUV at $34,495.

Kia Niro EV

Sold alongside its hybrid and plug-in hybrid counterparts, the Niro EV also shares a powertrain with the related Hyundai Kona Electric; unlike the Kona Electric, however, the Niro EV is available in all 50 states. The Niro also carries advantages over the Kona that include a larger backseat and longer range (the Niro gets an EPA-estimated 239 miles). Although the Niro family sees a redesign for 2023 , the outgoing model still has a lot to offer shoppers, including a competitive starting price of $41,205.

Summer Road-Trip Maintenance and Tips

Whether you’re planning to get a new vehicle or take your trusty old one on a summer road trip, it’s a good idea to make sure the car is ready for the trip. AAA recommends checking the tires and tire pressure ; testing the brakes and the battery; topping off oil and other fluids; checking belts and hoses; checking the air conditioning; and stocking the vehicle with an emergency supply kit .

The EV ownership experience differs from a gas-powered car, especially when planning a road trip. You’ll need to account for the vehicle’s range and map out charging stations along the route if the range is insufficient. Many EVs come with a smartphone app to check the vehicle’s mileage range and battery charge and help you find charging stations on the go; for example, Chevy offers EV Access through its OnStar Connected services for the Bolt EV and EUV, and a similar app is offered for the Nissan Leaf through NissanConnect EV Services .

The 10 Best Road Trip Cars for Open-Road Adventures

Best Road Trip Cars 0 Hero

By: Tim Huber Published: Aug 16, 2023

In 1956, the U.S. government passed the Federal-Aid Highway Act, allocating $26B to construct an initial 41,000-mile  interstate network . In response to the network’s construction, countless restaurants, motels, and roadside attractions would pop up along these now-iconic highways in order to cater to automotive travelers — ultimately kicking off a grand and long-held tradition of road tripping that’s as American as baseball or apple pie.

And while there are plenty of factors that can have an enormous impact on the overall quality of your time spent on the road — such as your starting point, ultimate destination, travel companions, and budget — the single biggest variable is undoubtedly one’s choice of ride. With the exception of a handful of  new EVs , practically every car currently in production is more than capable of taking on cross-country touring duties, however, there’s a shortlist of models that objectively lend themselves to road-tripping far better than anything else on the market. And it’s this crop of vehicles that we’ll be exploring today in this guide to the best road trip cars you can buy — delving into the most capable long-distance cars available, along with what factors and qualities make a model ideal for long-haul travel.

What Factors Make For An Ideal Road Trip Car?

Though there are clearly several blatant areas to explore when buying a road trip-focused car — such as range, comfort, and cargo space — there’s also a myriad of less obvious, though still massively important elements to take into consideration when shopping in this space. Below, we’ll briefly touch on seven of the most pivotal areas to think about prior to pulling the trigger on your purchase.

Range:  Though most of the world’s major highway networks are littered with gas stations and service shops, the reality is that having to exit the freeway and pull over every other hour to fill up isn’t exactly convenient, which is why a car’s range (on a single tank) is of such importance. At the very least, you’ll want a vehicle that affords several hundred miles of autonomy between trips to the pump. This area is even more important for  electric cars , as — despite there being close to ten million charging stations scattered across the planet — there are far more gas stations than EV chargers. As such, you’ll not only want to review an EV’s range, but also the charging network that’s available for said EV.

Comfort:  Being comfortable in a car is obviously important, though this factor matters far more when dealing with road trip cars, as drivers — and their passenger(s) — typically spend hours at a time inside the cabin of these vehicles. Consequently, this makes a given car’s comfortability level of extreme significance. And while there are dozens of factors that contribute to how comfortable a car is, some of the more important elements to consider are the seats, their construction and upholstery, their level of adjustability, and whether they offer heating, cooling, or massage functions. Additional areas like dual climate control and robust soundproofing can also hugely up a car’s comfortability.

Amenities:  While there’s no denying that comfort is a hugely important area when dealing with road trip cars, there are nonetheless a handful of additional features that can very much bolster one’s enjoyment during long-range drives. Alongside amenities like touchscreen infotainment setups and moon/sunroofs, there are also features like web browsers and connectivity to streaming services that can enhance the users’ experience. Likewise, most of today’s best road trip cars also pack advanced suites of electronic driver assists such as forward collision warning and avoidance systems, lane keep assist, blindspot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control, just to name a few. Some brands also offer supplementary amenities, like Tesla, which sells cars equipped with features like “Caraoke,” HEPA filtration systems, and of course,  the American automaker’s  state-of-the-art autopilot system.

Storage:  The longer the road trip, the more gear the driver will typically need. As such, the amount of cargo space afforded by a particular vehicle is of utmost importance, as roomier rides will boast more internal real estate for stashing bags and equipment. And, though this is clearly a crucial area to consider when reviewing cars for road trips, it is worth pointing out that one can always supplement a car’s internal square footage with a roof rack or rooftop cargo box, though this option is obviously less convenient — and will often slightly mitigate fuel — or battery — consumption. You’ll also likely want to consider how many people the car seats, as well as how much cargo space is available for each passenger’s bags and gear. Backseat legroom is also a crucial area to consider when reviewing this element.

Reliability & Service Intervals:  The reality is that the vast  majority of new cars  are incredibly reliable and should have no issue driving cross country several times over. With that said, there are some models with better reputations when it comes to overall reliability. Additionally, if you plan to use this vehicle for extensive road-tripping, you’ll also want to look into the model’s required service intervals, as these figures can hugely vary. And, whether it’s a road trip car or a daily commuter — or even a motorcycle — it’s always worth looking into whether any recalls have been issued for a particular model.

Manufacturer & Dealer Support:  When going on a road trip, not only is it important to review how often a car needs to be serviced but also where it can be serviced, as some makes will boast a markedly more robust dealership and support network should you need a part repaired or replaced. This extends to areas like the availability of roadside assistance offered by a marque. It’s also worth pointing out that rarer and more exotic models will make for a much more difficult time sourcing replacement parts – as it’s not that hard to find a replacement component for a BMW car just about anywhere in the country, though the same can’t be said for models from brands like Bentley or Aston Martin.

Drivetrain & Performance:  Unlike commuting where the main objective is simply to get from A to B, long-range road-tripping is all about enjoying the journey and embracing the open road. As such, having a car that affords a more spirited driving experience makes for a markedly more enjoyable time behind the wheel, which is why reviewing a model’s engine is so important. Alongside the engine configuration itself, you’ll also want to check out its  aspiration type  and displacement — as well as horsepower and torque figures, 0-60mph times, and top speeds. A car’s suspension package is another crucial area to consider, as it will directly impact a model’s overall handling, as well as the smoothness of the ride. Quite a few cars also offer the best of both worlds with adjustable air ride suspension setups that can be lowered for spirited runs through the canyons, or raised back up for ultra-smooth and plush freeway travel.

  • A hybrid-boosted bi-turbo 4.0-liter V8-powered version of Bentley’s normally V12-powered flagship model that retains its world-class luxury.

Best Hybrid Pick: The Bentley Flying Spur has long been one of the most luxurious and well-optioned cars on the market, making it an objectively fantastic choice for road-tripping — assuming you can swing its fairly exorbitant MSRP. However, last summer, the famed British firm rolled out a new version of the car that sees its usual V12 and V8 engine options swapped out in favor of a hybrid-boosted bi-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that makes 542hp and 568ft-lbs of torque and allows for a top speed of 177mph and a 0-60mph time of just 4.1-seconds. This  hybrid luxury car  also offers a range of 435 miles — or an all-electric range of 25 miles, if you want to go green for a portion of your trip.

Taking its name from its 707-hp output, the DBX707 is another ultra-high-end vehicle that boasts a unique mix of world-class comfort and performance. Alongside a 360-mile range and a decent amount of cargo space, the DBX707 also packs a 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine that’s mated to a 9-speed “wet clutch” automatic transmission and allows for 3.3 seconds 0-60mph runs and an impressive top speed of 193mph — a fairly insane figure considering this is an SUV.

Engine:  Twin-Turbocharged 4.0L V8 Power:  707HP & 664FT-LBs Cargo Space:  54 Cubic Feet Range:  360 Miles Seats:  5 MSRP: $236,000

2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Overall score: 8.8/10 | $56,750.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is one of the top midsize luxury sedans. Its interior is one of the best in its class, with an elegant design that comes replete with intuitive technology, such as the easy-to-use MBUX infotainment system. It can respond to complex voice commands when prompted simply by saying “Hey, Mercedes ....”

The ride quality of the E-Class perfectly complements its comfortable interior. It gently glides along, soaking up bumps in the road. 2023 BMW i7

2023 BMW i7

Overall score: 8.9/10 | $119,300.

Like the i4 to the 4 Series Gran Coupe, the BMW i7 is the all-electric version of the 7 Series, making it BMW’s flagship EV sedan. 2023 Acura Integra

2023 Acura Integra

Overall score: 9.0/10 | $31,300.

After more than two decades away from the American market, the Acura Integra makes its triumphant return, which hopefully also signals a pivot away from Acura using alphanumerics for car names. The Integra is an athletic compact luxury sedan with terrific handling which makes this car engaging to drive.

The Integra comes standard with a 200-horsepower, turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that sends power to the front wheels through a CVT with paddle shifters. It can also be had with a six-speed manual transmission. Though the Integra is not as luxurious as other vehicles in the segment, its entertaining driving dynamics more than make up for it.

The Best Gear for Your Road Trips

A person reading a road atlas while sitting on the hood of their car, parked on the side of a road in the desert.

By Kit Dillon and Wirecutter Staff

A road trip is an adventure. It doesn’t matter how far you go. But all adventures require a little planning (and one or two backup plans, in case things go sideways).

We took our first testing road trip in an age far less complicated than these past few years, but the gear we tested and the advice we’ve gathered here should still help you navigate the roads safely and comfortably.

Our original trip, in 2016, included 60 hours of researching and testing gear to take on the open road. We packed all of our top contenders into a Honda Fit EX and headed out on a four-day jaunt to determine what’s nice to have, what’s great, and what’s absolutely essential for your next road trip.

In 2020 we added a few items to help you adhere to safe-travel guidelines, and those things will always come in handy during flu and cold season. We’ve also added several selections to take on challenging winter car trips.

A car parked in the middle of a road with a bunch of road trip supplies placed for display on the ground next to it.

After traveling for 1,500 miles, through four states and six national parks, we think we have a good grasp on what makes an excellent road trip. In addition to performing our own research and testing, we consulted with half a dozen engineers, mechanics, and other experts to bring you these picks. Our hope is that the recommendations in this guide will help you see more and explore farther down the road than you thought possible.

Below, you’ll find recommendations for cargo boxes , binoculars , coolers , emergency beacons , a first-aid kit , a folding blanket , an ice scraper , an instant camera , inverters for your electronics , a multi-tool , phone mounts , a portable jump starter , ratchets and tie-down straps , a road atlas , stain remover , a stowable daypack , sun shades , sunglasses , a tire-pressure gauge , a toolkit for cars , a travel game , a travel pillow , water jugs , windshield water repellent , wipes , and so much more. These items will help you have a successful road trip, regardless of region or weather.

However, even if you have the best gear in the world, it’s always best to address small problems before they become emergencies. That’s why we asked Christopher Smith , a veteran automotive journalist with a penchant for restoring fixer-uppers, to help us put together some advice on how to prepare your car for a trip . (And he lives in South Dakota, where things are spread out, so he’s always prepared.) We cover everything from checking your tires and dipsticks to knowing what you should do if your car starts smelling like rotten eggs for seemingly no reason.

This guide isn’t specifically geared toward families, though most of the picks would be useful to a family traveling by car. We do have guides to infant car seats , travel car seats , booster car seats , and water bottles for kids —all things that are of particular interest to families on the road.

  • Preparing for a road trip

A person grabbing an item from the trunk of a car that is filled with roadtrip supplies.

Being able to find what you need when you need it—whether it’s water, emergency lights, a change of clothes, or a granola bar—can make the difference between a short, easy stop that rejuvenates and a long, frustrating one that makes you question why you left home in the first place.

It all starts with packing. Don’t overthink it. We like to keep items grouped: emergency gear in the back right of the trunk, water in the back left, spare batteries in the glove compartment along with the power inverter, and so on. After a few days, double-checking that everything is where it should be before heading off becomes a comforting ritual, and it helps mitigate the worry that you left … something … in the motel last night.

And don’t overpack. As with a bag, a well-packed car is one that has less than you think you want to bring but everything that you truly need. You don’t have to bring everything—just the things that are essential. Remember, you want to enjoy the drive. Not having to worry about countless items that someone might lose or misplace is a big step toward that enjoyment.

Cargo boxes

sedan travel

Yakima SkyBox NX 18

The best cargo box.

This cargo box offers great aerodynamics, easy mounting and operation, and a lot of storage at a reasonable price.

Buying Options

A cargo box effectively allows you to double your trunk space by moving bulky items from your car’s interior or trunk to its roof. After gathering up as much intel as we could about rooftop cargo boxes from experts, retailers, manufacturers, customers, and outdoor-gear reviewers, we’ve concluded that of the 21 boxes we surveyed, the Yakima SkyBox NX 18 offers the best combination of features, build quality, and value pricing for most road trips.

The NX line replaces the Carbonite line of Yakima boxes, which included our previous cargo box pick, the SkyBox 16 Carbonite .

The cargo box’s low-drag aerodynamic design minimizes wind noise and reduces the impact on fuel economy. Its 18 cubic feet of space allows it to hold skis, duffle bags, backpacks, sleeping bags and other camping gear, or any random (though fairly lightweight) stuff, and it does so securely—both in solidly mounting to your roof rack and in resisting theft. If you don’t have a rack already, this REI car rack buying guide is a good place to start, but be sure to consult your car’s owner manual to see how much weight its roof can bear.

The SkyBox NX 18 is easy to use. Like most cargo boxes these days, it uses sliding brackets, rather than one or two fixed spots, for attachment to the crossbars, making perfect positioning a snap. To secure the brackets to the crossbars, you use a simple torque wrench (included) that will announce with an audible click—like a gas-tank cap—when you’ve tightened the four installation bolts down securely. The tool lives inside the cargo box, though out of the way of your gear, for safekeeping.

Once installed, the SkyBox NX 18 allows easy access from either side of the car, and its newly redesigned dimensions (a change from the previous model) make it less likely to interfere with a liftgate if you put it on a hatchback or station wagon.

If you need more space, Yakima’s older-generation 21-cubic-foot model (the company has not released an updated, NX 21 version so far) may still be available for purchase. Be aware, however, that this box weighs more and can encourage overloading past your car rack’s weight limit, which might be lower than you expect. It may also be too long in the back to clear some liftgates. As Ken Klaes, general manager of ReRack , a Portland, Oregon–based cargo-box retailer and rental company, explained to us: “A rack designed to carry 150 pounds doesn’t forget that the box is there; the weight of the box itself (often 50-ish pounds) needs to be subtracted from the weight rating to give you a real capacity for the box.”

Roof straps

sedan travel

Keeper Endless Loop Ratchet Tie-Down

The best ratcheting straps.

Easier to use than non-ratcheting straps, these straps ensure that your stuff stays put.

I spent many years working in rigging and rope access on offshore oil platforms, where I played with loads, angles, line pulls, and sheave-block friction percentages—in other words, I know a thing or two about strapping things down. You can find two common types of roof straps: ratchet straps, which have a mechanical lever and gear, and cam straps (sometimes called “lashing” or “loop” straps), which connect to themselves through a cam buckle . If I could choose only one type, I’d get ratchet straps because they’re easier to secure. More specifically, I’d get the Keeper Endless Loop Ratchet Tie-Down .

We spent several hours examining 22 strap options before landing on the Keeper version. Keeper is a reliable brand, and the ratchets are easy to tighten and loosen, thanks to their all-metal construction. ( Cheaper ratchets are hard to release and prone to sticking or breaking due to their reliance on plastic parts.) At 13 feet long, these 1-inch straps are long enough for all but the most strenuous loads on the largest of vehicles, and their nylon webbing’s 400-pound working load limit and 1,200-pound break strength put them right in line with similarly priced straps. You could get something that’s heavier-duty or longer, but you’d be paying more for strength or length you don’t need.

On our trip, driving in a car without a roof rack, we used the Keeper straps to great success. The straps held a full water jug to the roof of our Honda for a few dozen miles through the backroads of Arizona with no issues. Other Wirecutter staffers have owned Keeper straps for years and vouch for their overall strength and durability.

sedan travel

NRS 1″ HD Tie-Down Straps

The best cam straps.

Simpler and cheaper than ratchet straps, these straps have above-average strength ratings.

If you prefer the simplicity of a cam strap or don’t need the extra force that a ratchet strap provides, we like the NRS 1″ HD Tie-Down Straps , which come in a variety of lengths. They’re pricier than more popular options, but their webbing is rated to a 1,500-pound breaking strength (the cam itself has a 2,000-pound breaking strength) and a 500-pound working load, in contrast with the 600-pound breaking strength and 200-pound working load of this best-selling Keeper set . Equipment of this grade may seem like overkill, but Wirecutter’s Mark Smirniotis had several weaker cams fail on him when he was strapping loads to his Jeep. He noted in 2016 that of all the straps on Amazon with more than 25 customer reviews, the NRS straps were the only ones that had no reviews complaining of failed cams. NRS is primarily known as the premier kayaking- and rafting-accessory company, so the folks there probably know something about strapping awkwardly large loads onto cars.

sedan travel

Thule Quick Loop Strap 530

For smaller cars.

This strap offers a quick way to add load-stabilizing anchor points to a small car.

For owners of compact cars who want to move long or oversize loads, such as a kayak, we also like the Thule Quick Loop Strap . You secure these straps under the hood of your car (or the trunk, if you don’t have a hatchback) to create a set of forward anchor points to help stabilize the forward section of whatever it is you’re carrying. Judging from our testing, these straps are very quick to set up, and they can add a welcome level of versatility to tough packing situations.

  • Always check the maximum load of your car’s anchor points, such as the roof rack. Ratchet straps can apply a lot of force beyond just the weight of your belongings, so knowing your maximum load will help you avoid over-tensioning the straps.
  • If the straps vibrate against the roof while you drive, adding a few twists in them can sometimes stop them from slicing the air.
  • Don’t put knots in your straps, especially if you’re applying tension. Knots can cut through nylon with surprisingly little force. A knot also significantly reduces the overall load that the strap can handle.
  • Never use bungee cords to hold anything down. They’re fine for stabilizing items but not for securing heavy loads.

Driving can be fun, meditative, exhausting, and torturous. After five hours of driving through the desert, it can sometimes be all of those things at the same time.

A thousand little gadgets promise to make a long drive somehow easier. Most of them are useless and seemingly designed to distract you more than anything else. Try to avoid these items. The best gear is durable, unobtrusive, and easy to use—so you can keep your eyes (and your thoughts) on the road.

You will get bored—500 miles on cruise control with an automatic transmission can be a pretty dull time. Not always, of course, but sometimes it will be boring, and maybe that’s the point. In this frenetic age, that feeling is practically a luxury, and it’s essential to the trip. Revel in it.

A bunch of small roadtrip items placed on top of the dashboard of a parked car, including a case for sunglasses and a GPS system.

It would be impossible for us to pick the best overall sunglasses, since your choice ultimately depends on your personal style. We have picks for cheap sunglasses in a separate guide. But driving sunglasses are different because they’re designed to help you perform a specific task: driving safely. In that regard, Maui Jim makes the best sunglasses around, though they are something of an investment.

sedan travel

The best sunglasses

These are the clearest driving sunglasses we’ve found, with no perceptible distortion.

We compared a Maui Jim pair with more than 20 types of sunglasses, driving or otherwise, and found this pair to be the best of the bunch. The Maui Jim sunglasses had the clearest lenses, with no perceptible distortion, on the lightest frames we tested (0.6 ounce, or about half the weight of a wooden pencil). I’ve never encountered sunglasses that I can wear for hours on end without somehow hurting my nose, ears, or both. But during my trip there were a few afternoons when I had completely forgotten I was even wearing the Maui Jim sunglasses—despite five-plus hours of driving with them on.

The clarity of the lenses was another surprise. The Maui Jim lenses are so clear that it’s borderline unsettling the first time you try on these sunglasses. Thanks to the lenses’ exceptional clarity and polarization, everything—including the scenery around you and the road ahead—looks sharper through them.

A person reading an atlas while sitting on a car.

As far as specific model recommendations go, I suggest scanning the offerings on the Maui Jim website and reading the fit descriptions to find something that matches your aesthetic sensibilities. Unlike companies that go by lens size only, Maui Jim lists face shape as part of its fit guidelines. That means you’re more likely to find what’s most comfortable for you on your first try. Just keep in mind that bigger lenses tend to be better because they offer more coverage.

Maui Jim glasses come with a two-year warranty . After checking with the company, we confirmed that it fulfills warranties on its sunglasses no matter where you buy them. However, Maui Jim services only authentic lenses and frames that haven’t been modified in any way. You can tell whether the pair you have is genuine (and not a knockoff) by confirming that the Maui Jim logo is etched, not just painted onto the lens.

Smartphone mount

In an ideal world, people wouldn’t use a phone at all while driving, and if you have a copilot, you shouldn’t have to—you can delegate the phone-related tasks to them. But in reality, for many drivers, a phone is the source for navigation, information, messages, music, and (of course) phone calls. However, if you hold the phone in your hand as you drive—or look down at it in a cup holder or center-console bin—it can be a major distraction and safety risk. That’s why we recommend using a smartphone mount.

sedan travel

iOttie iTap Magnetic 2

The best dash- or windshield-mounted smartphone mount.

Whether it’s on a dashboard or windshield, this model is easy to set up, grips securely, and has a strong magnetic mount that supports most phones in any position.

sedan travel

iOttie iTap Magnetic 2 Air Vent Mount

The best vent-mounted smartphone mount.

This model is easy to set up and remove, and it has the same strong magnetic mount as the dash version. It securely held on to our cars’ vent slats.

sedan travel

iOttie iTap Magnetic 2 CD Slot Mount

The best cd-slot-mounted smartphone mount.

This mount attached quickly and firmly to our cars’ CD slots and has the same magnetic mount as the other iTap Magnetic 2 versions.

I enjoy the simplicity of my phone with no accessories, so I like that the iOttie iTap Magnetic 2 mounts offer an attractively easy way to mount and unmount my phone with one hand. In our tests , the magnets in all three versions— dash/windshield , vent , and CD slot —were strong, supporting most of our phones vertically and horizontally over even the roughest terrain. Only the large, 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max gave them some trouble when they held it horizontally; the mounts were solid with a 6-inch Google Pixel 2 XL.

To use the magnetic mount, you have to attach a small metal plate to the back of your phone or to the case. Doing so is safe for your phone, and we found this detail to be small, subtle, and attractive enough that we didn’t mind it. Often you can hide it entirely by attaching the plate to the inside of a phone’s case. But the plate could interfere with your ability to wirelessly charge your phone; if you want to be able to continue to use that function, consider the following options from our guide to wireless charging phone mounts .

The Best Cars for a Road Trip

Best cars for cruising the open road .

sedan travel

Whether you want to travel cross-country or drive to a neighboring state, a road trip is a popular mode of transportation for summer vacations. Even with high gas prices, car travel is typically more cost-effective than air travel with the added bonus of avoiding TSA regulations and baggage weight requirements.

Just like having the right travel companion, having the right car can greatly improve the quality of your road trip. And because everyone’s travel needs are different, we’ve selected the best road trip cars across multiple vehicle categories. After all, a family road trip with small children would require a different vehicle than cruising the California coast.

We’ve selected the best road trip cars based on reliability, fuel efficiency, cargo/passenger space, and safety. These cars also have convenience features that can come in handy for road travel, including a WiFi hotspot, smart cruise control, automatic high beam headlights, and lane-keep assist. Other features that appear on some of the vehicles on the list include rear entertainment systems and roadside assistance.

Best Small SUV for a Road Trip

Subaru Outback

iSeeCars Reliability Score: 8.6

Average New Car Price: $36,679

Average 3-Year-Old Used Car Price: $34,433

sedan travel

The best small SUV for a road trip is the Subaru Outback. The Outback is among the most spacious vehicles in the class and offers plenty of room for cargo and passengers. It also has excellent fuel economy. If your road trip includes rugged adventures, you can opt for the Wilderness model, which adds increased ground clearance for off-roading. The Outback comes standard with many safety features including adaptive cruise control, while more driver assistance features like blind spot monitoring are available on higher trims. All-wheel drive (AWD) comes standard so this vehicle can handle road trips in all seasons.

Best Midsize SUV for a Road Trip

Honda Pilot

iSeeCars Reliability Score: 9.2

Average New Car Price: $43,648

Average 3-Year-Old Used Car Price: $38,652

sedan travel

If a midsize SUV is your preferred vehicle for a road trip, chances are you have a family in tow. The Honda Pilot three-row crossover is the ultimate family SUV, which makes it an excellent choice for road trip transportation. The Pilot comes standard with seating for eight, while a seven-seat configuration with second-row captain chairs is also available. The spacious Honda Pilot offers three roomy rows of seats and comes standard with an 8-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, HD Radio, and two USB ports. Higher trims offer even more road trip-friendly features including second-row USB ports, wireless device charging, navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and the CabinTalk PA system. Front-wheel drive models get an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, which is typical for the midsize three-row SUV class.

Best Large SUV for a Road Trip

Chevrolet Suburban

iSeeCars Reliability Score: 9.1

Average New Car Price: $67,883

Average 3-Year-Old Used Car Price: $57,792

sedan travel

By nature, large SUVs have dismal gas mileage, which can make them less than ideal for road trips. However, if you are hauling a large family and lots of cargo, a full-size SUV might be necessary. While midsize SUVs sacrifice trunk space when the rear seats are in place, full-size SUVs like the Chevrolet Suburban have a massive cargo hold in addition to three spacious rows of seats. The Suburban can haul up to eight passengers and has 41.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third-row, 93.8 cubic feet with these seats folded, and 144.7 cubic feet with both the second and third rows folded.  Standard infotainment features include a 10.2-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, eight USB ports, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and satellite radio. Available infotainment features include a navigation system, wireless device charging, and a rear-seat entertainment system with two 12.6-inch touch screens to keep children occupied.

And if you’re making frequent stops with small children, the easy entry/exit process of a minivan can’t be beat. Standard infotainment features include a 9-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, seven USB ports, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Available features include a navigation system, wireless device charging, and a rear-seat entertainment system. You can even get an in-car intercom to easily communicate with rear passengers. Standard safety features include  blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control.

If your cargo needs aren’t too large, a fun-to-drive American sports car can be the ultimate road trip companion. The Mustang has one of the largest trunks in its class, although the coupe is more spacious than the convertible. It also seats four passengers, which makes it more practical than a two-seater. With its base 310-horsepower turbo-four cylinder engine and 10-speed automatic transmission, the Mustang gets up to 21 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, which is more than most sports cars. The Mustang comes standard with a voice-controlled SYNC infotainment system and a Wi-Fi hot spot, and a larger touchscreen, navigation system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available. The Mustang also has a suite of standard safety features like blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control is also available.

Best Sedan/Hatchback for a Road Trip

Mazda Mazda3

sedan travel

The Mazda 3 is a fun-to-drive small car that’s available as a sedan or hatchback. While the sedan has below-average cargo space for the class, it can do the job if you’re a light packer. For more space, there’s the hatchback that offers comparable cargo space to subcompact SUVs.  The Mazda3 comes standard with a responsive 155-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that provides plenty of power for your daily commute. You can also opt for a more powerful 186 horsepower four-cylinder or a turbocharged 227 horsepower four-cylinder. The Mazda3 sedan gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, while the hatchback gets 26/34 mpg city/highway. The Mazda 3 comes standard with automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, forward automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

The Tesla Model 3 has between 272 miles and 358 miles of range, and if you use its standard navigation system, it will provide you with places along your route where you can charge the battery pack. Other standard infotainment features include a 15-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless device charging. It has a front and rear trunk, which has a total of 23 cubic feet of cargo space, which is comparable to a subcompact SUV and should provide enough room for luggage. The Model 3 comes with a full suite of standard safety features like forward collision warning and active cruise control. Available features include full self-driving capability, which can reduce the stress of long-distance road trips. These features include automatic lane change, automatic parking, and stop sign and traffic light recognition.

That’s why the best road trip vehicles exist across multiple categories. So whether you’re taking a leaf-peeping excursion through New England, a family road trip to Disney World, or an expedition through the mountains, we can help you find the best vehicle for your road trip. While all modern new cars are equipped with active safety features, some vehicles offer more standard features than others. The same goes for infotainment features, although more premium vehicles tend to have more of the latest and greatest technology.

This year, to make shopping and comparison easier, we've enhanced our roundup by adding key specs like mileage, maximum occupants, trim (which refers to the configuration package; each trim has different features, and higher trims offer more equipment) and length (especially important if you parallel park regularly). To learn more details about our testing process scroll down below our picks.

Best Subcompact Car

2022 hyundai accent.

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 33/41/36 mpg (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: SE, SEL, Limited
  • Length: 172.6 inches

This stylish, budget-conscious four-door subcompact sedan is great for a young professional or couple in the city . It offers impressive fuel economy, class-leading warranty coverage at 10 years or 100,000 miles, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat for all trims.

As one would expect with a subcompact, you trade rear-seat and trunk space for a more agile size, but the Accent is still a quiet and comfy ride for passengers.

Lab Results: Our experts are fans of the contemporary, dignified exterior and simple interior. Since the Accent is so wallet-friendly, we say upgrade to at least the SEL package to unlock Apple CarPlay and Android connectivity on a larger 7" touchscreen.

Our fave feature: the optional hands-free smart trunk release that activates if you stand behind the car for three seconds with the key in proximity (e.g., purse, pocket, hand). C/D Senior Editor and judge Drew Dorian sums it up perfectly: “Whether it’s serving as someone’s first car or as a spare set of wheels to cart the kids around town, the Accent is a budget-friendly option that forgoes the overwrought styling that’s all too common with cheap small cars.”

2022 Hyundai Accent , from $16,645 (base price)

Best Entry Luxury Car

2022 cadillac ct4.

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 20/29/23 mpg (city/highway/combined as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Available Trims: Luxury, Premium Luxury, Sport, CT4-V, CT4-V Blackwing
  • Length: 187.2 inches

The entry-level Cadillac subcompact doesn't disappoint in its sleek styling and confident handling, making this sport vehicle ideal for those keen on luxury, but with a tighter budget. We're pleased that even the base Luxury model incorporates more standard driver assistance technology, including lane-keeping assist and automated emergency braking, as well as convenience features like wireless charging for your phone, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and 12-way power-adjustable front seats.

Similar to other vehicles of this size, you sacrifice back-seat spaciousness and cargo space for its diminutive overall size. And we wish the interior materials matched the elevated exterior and driving experience.

Lab Results: In test drives, the CT4 was found to offer sporty acceleration and deft handling. With rear-wheel drive standard (all-wheel drive is available), it sets itself apart from rivals in the category.

Our pros were thrilled Cadillac's sophisticated Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, designed to allow hands-free driving on compatible highways, is now available starting on the Premium Luxury trim.

2022 Cadillac CT4 , from $33,695 (base price)

Best Compact Car

2022 honda civic.

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 31/40/35 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Available Trims: LX, Sport, EX, Touring, Si
  • Length: 183.3 inches

Honda's compact sedan got a major facelift for the 2022 model year, and its modern exterior and sleek interior make it optimal for those looking for a fun, reliable vehicle . Happily, the more upscale exterior and refined interior are met with the well-balanced handling expected from this popular vehicle, as it continues to deliver a balance of affordability, reliability and efficiency.

It’s hard to find fault with this sedan, though we do wish road noise was dampened and lumbar support was improved for the driver.

Lab Results: Our tech experts were pleased by the larger touchscreen infotainment system (standard 7”, available 9”) and improved driver safety technology features. Ample tech — including emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and rear-seat reminders — is standard. Controls are large and intuitive, making adjustments to entertainment and temperature easy.

In test drives, the compact car provided not only an engaging driving experience thanks to its spry handling, but a comfy and surprisingly spacious interior for the driver and passengers. Car seat installation was easy, and the setup allowed for versatile configurations. And for those needing more cargo space, you can opt for the hatchback variant.

2022 Honda Civic, from $27,300 (base price)

Best Luxury Compact Car

2022 genesis g70.

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 21/31/24 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Available Trims: 2.0T, 3.3T and 3.3T Launch Edition
  • Length: 184.4 inches

This sporty sedan is an ideal pick for someone looking for something decidedly luxurious yet still a great value . Taking an already attractive vehicle with an impressive build quality, the refreshed redesign for 2022 offers updated styling and improved infotainment offerings, including a 10.3” touchscreen and updated software.

Rear passengers will be a bit cramped with legroom and cargo space that is subpar for the segment, but the overall sentiment from all of our testing was luxury at a value price point.

Lab Results: Like other Genesis vehicles, an abundance of comfort and tech features is included standard, which gives Genesis an advantage over the competition. Our experts noted features that help mitigate collisions, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and emergency braking. Drivers and passengers can take comfort in the fact that it was selected as a Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), a rigorous safety recognition in the auto industry for crash tests and automatic braking.

Our pros found the ride to be enjoyable, with well-balanced, composed road-handling and sharp steering. The various modes let you determine more precisely the G70’s on-road demeanor, such as Comfort mode for daily driving and Sport/Sport+ for a more enthusiast ride. With strong powertrain options, all trims offered controlled, refined rides. You have a choice of a capable turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6 engine for a more powerful punch at higher trims. While the manual transmission was discontinued, both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are still offered.

2022 Genesis G70 , from $37,525 (base price)

2022 Honda Accord

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 30/38/33 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Available Trims: LX, Hybrid, Sport, Sport SE, EX-L, Touring
  • Length: 196.1 inches

The 2022 Accord sedan is a practical and modern vehicle for a family looking for comfort and convenience but not willing to sacrifice a fun driving experience . A frequent winner in our Best New Family Car awards, the Accord continues to offer balanced and confident handling regardless of its powertrains.

An abundance of Honda Sensing features is standard as part of the base package, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. If you're looking for accurate steering, the Accord will deliver.

Lab Results: We've driven configurations with both the 192-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and the 242-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and found both capable of providing powerful acceleration and fuel efficiency. And then there's the even more efficient hybrid model that has likewise earned a spot on our best hybrid vehicles list . Beyond the responsive engine and transmission, the ride is quiet and comfortable for driver and passengers alike.

Our tech assessment turned up high marks for the infotainment system, notably the clean and simple layout, making it intuitive to access desired functions. This mid-size sedan offers ample, segment-leading cargo space (nearly 17 cubic feet) and a surprisingly spacious back seat.

2022 Honda Accord , from $25,470 (base price)

Best Luxury Sedan

2022 mercedes-benz e-class.

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 23/31(city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats sedan, four in coupe and cabriolet
  • Available Trims: E350, E450 sedan, E450 coupe, E450 cabriolet
  • Length: 194.3 inches

This luxury car delivers elegance befitting someone looking for a head-turning ride with a lavishly appointed interior . In a competitive segment, it stands out thanks to its combination of interior comfort, driving characteristics and performance capabilities.

The E-class is available in a wide range of powertrains and styles, meaning there's something for everyone. All deliver composed handling and smoothness over bumpy roads; the E350 has a turbocharged four-cylinder, and the E450 steps it up to a turbocharged six-cylinder. You can opt for a sedan, coupe or convertible.

Lab Results: The vehicle feels luxe as even the base model includes features usually reserved for higher trims such as a 12.3" touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital gauge display. Interior ambient lighting is also standard — it offers extra style and can help reduce driver fatigue.

While none have notably large trunks, the convertible has the most diminutive cargo space with us being able to fit only two carry-on suitcases in tests. The E-class is more focused on passenger comfort: The vehicle itself provided next-level comfort with one tester exclaiming, "It's hands down the most comfortable seat I've experienced."

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class , from $54,950 (base price)

Best Full-size Sedan

2022 nissan maxima.

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 20/30/24 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Available Trims: SV, SR, Platinum
  • Length: 192.8 inches

The full-size Maxima sedan is designed for a family with practicality and safety top of mind. With safety being paramount in a family-friendly vehicle, the Maxima delivers it in spades with the highest crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and best IIHS results. For parents with teenage drivers, the Maxima has monitoring tools including the ability to set speed and boundary restrictions, curfew alerts and the ability to track the vehicle.

Front-seat comfort and space for the driver and passengers is great, though you sacrifice some trunk space for it. The sleek exterior styling also results in less rear-seat passenger headspace than in other large four-door cars.

Lab Results: It offers ample power with its 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). We found the Maxima fun to drive and that it offered strong acceleration. It's a large sedan that's stylish and spacious and handles nicely considering its size.

In our assessments, we found the infotainment system to be intuitive, with an 8" touchscreen. Ultimately, you feel like you're getting a sporty and upscale package with a more accessible price point than luxury vehicles.

2022 Nissan Maxima , from $37,440 (base price)

Best Luxury Full-size Sedan

2022 mercedes-benz s-class.

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 21/30 (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Available Trims: S500, S580
  • Length: 208.2 inches

The full-size S-class sedan is a modern luxury vehicle designed for a family looking for equal parts comfort, high-tech offerings and capable on-road performance . Included standard are luxury features such as heated 12-way power front seats with massage. You definitely won't mind waiting in line for school pickup with those settings! Inside, the cabin is both comfortable and quiet.

Rear-seat passengers will likewise feel the comfort and lavishness of the vehicle, with even more headroom and legroom than the outgoing model and with available heating and massage features with power-adjustable recline. Also available are dual rear screens for entertainment purposes.

Lab Results: The unmistakable exterior aesthetic is modern and lavish, and the S-class’s interior showcases Mercedes-Benz’s refined craftsmanship and attention to detail. And that's not to discount the powerful engine options (429-hp turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder or 496-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter eight-cylinder) serving up impressive acceleration. The ride is relaxed yet stable, and a rear-wheel steering system affords exceptional maneuverability.

The sleek 12.8" OLED touchscreen stands out like a centerpiece, which through the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) system, offers intuitive control of the vehicle and multimedia content. Updates to the interface mean improved voice recognition and facial and fingerprint recognition options. There's also a 12.3" digital gauge display that can be personalized. It's also loaded with generous standard driver-assistance technology including forward-collision and lane-departure warnings, plus the ability to park itself!

  • Miles Per Gallon: 24/31/26 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Available Trims: Base, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Turbo, Turbo Premium, Turbo Premium Plus
  • Length: 173 inches

An excellent small SUV, the CX-30 is designed for a budget-conscious family with a sophisticated design sense looking for a compact, city-friendly vehicle . It received a 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA and was designated an IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

Notably impressive for the price, the vehicle sported a lot of standard driver-assistance features including automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. We were also pleased that the 2022 model year brings all-wheel drive as standard.

Lab Results: The base 186-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is perfectly adequate, though our advice is to opt for the 250-hp turbocharged version for more powerful acceleration. Handling is athletic and fluid with crisp steering.

Both the interior and exterior of the vehicle stood out in terms of design and finishes. One of our engineers noted, "The cleverly sculpted exterior gives the vehicle a sense of motion, even when it's still. So cool!" Layer that onto a vehicle that offered agile, yet balanced, handling, and you have a can't-go-wrong selection.

  • Miles Per Gallon: 24/32 (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Available Trims: sDrive28i, xDrive28i, M35i
  • Length: 172.2 inches

The X2 is a luxury subcompact for a family that principally cares about unique styling and a nimble ride . While it's classified as an SUV, it closely resembles a hatchback with its sloping roofline. The interior isn't top-of-the-line luxury, but it is handsome and outfitted with high-quality materials.

This driver-centric vehicle has easily accessible and responsive controls and a highly adjustable driver’s seat and steering-wheel placement. Thanks in part to its compact nature, the X2 delivers efficient fuel-economy ratings but skimps on rear headroom and cargo space.

Lab Results: The standard 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder is plenty strong, and the X2 generally offers agile handling. We found in our test drives that the eight-speed automatic transmission quickly shifted to the optimal gear. One tester noted: "I was impressed with just how fun the X2 was to drive, even on winding country roads."

While it's decidedly fun to drive, we noted a stiff ride, notably over rougher terrain. It is a great all-around vehicle that offers nimble handling and capable powertrains in a beautiful package.

Best Compact Crossover/SUV

  • Available Trims: Base, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, Premium Plus, Turbo, Turbo Signature
  • Length: 180.1 inches

A frequent GH winner, the compact CX-5 compact crossover is a mainstream vehicle that stands out from the crowd with its elegant exterior and well-appointed interior, suitable for a young professional couple or small family . It is an elegant vehicle that offers composed handling and adeptly handles bumps in the road.

The Mazda offers good looks and a good driving demeanor at an affordable sticker price. That said, due to its compact nature the rear-seat space is tight and cargo room isn’t as generous as other crossovers. The high-quality cabin and comfortable seating help compensate.

Lab Results: The CX-5 comes standard with a 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, or you can choose the more powerful turbocharged engine. Regardless, the CX-5 offers balanced handling and good fuel economy. That said, the Car and Driver pros found the new Turbo trim provides greater acceleration that better complements the CX-5’s sporty handling.

Updates to the refreshed 2022 model include a retuned transmission, suspension improvements and all-wheel drive now standard on all models. While we've long loved the CX-5, these refinements equate to an even smoother and more responsive driving experience. “The CX-5 channels Mazda’s iconic Miata sports car with crisp handling that no other compact crossover can match, making it ideal for driving enthusiasts with a family,” explains Dorian.

  • Available Trims: Momentum, R-Design, Inscription, Recharge, Recharge R-Design, Recharge Inscription, Recharge Polestar Engineered
  • Length: 185.4 inches

The XC60 is a crossover aimed at hauling a family around in comfort and style . The XC lineup from Volvo basically means there is something for everyone, and this best-seller offers a compromise between the ultra-compact nature of XC40 and the spaciousness of the XC90. Within the XC60 family, there are three different powertrains offered, including a plug-in hybrid (for the Recharge and Polestar models): The B5 is the base, with a turbocharged 247-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine; the upgraded B6 adds a supercharger, bumping horsepower to 295; and then the T8 plug-in ups it even higher.

The 2022 model has a restyled exterior. The changes are subtle but include an updated grille and front bumper. The XC60 offers fuel efficiency across all powertrains, with agile handling and a smooth ride. The elegant interior offers a quiet and comfy experience for the driver and all passengers and doesn't skimp on cargo space either. Loads of driver assistance tech is standard, including automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist.

Lab Results: Our creative team was notably impressed by the bold styling of the exterior, including the unique headlights and taillights. Besides great vehicle dynamics and refined craftsmanship, the infotainment system is a standout. You'll find front and center a large 9" vertical screen featuring a newly updated Google-based interface.

Those immersed in the Google Assistant ecosystem will find comfort with Google built in, standard on the 2022-model-year XC60. Even those new to this personal assistant will rejoice in the responsiveness from Google with chatting, making it easier to activate media, adjust the temperature controls, call a friend, start a playlist or initiate a destination in Google Maps, all hands-free. best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: not yet available
  • Available Trims: Base, Big Bend, Black Diamond, Outer Banks, Badlands, Wildtrak, Everglades
  • Length: 172.7 inches

The 2022 two-row Ford Bronco keeps its appeal and off-roading capabilities, making it a rugged SUV suitable not only for family adventures but everyday excursions as well . Building on the nostalgic charm of the original Bronco from over five decades earlier, both the interior and exterior design, as well as its impressive all-terrain capabilities, are reminiscent of the OG version.

A 300-hp turbo 2.3-liter four-cylinder is standard and a 330-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter six-cylinder engine is optional, but both powertrains provide sufficient power and a responsive driving experience. An independent front suspension and precise steering provide the driver with confidence. While none of the Bronco’s models deliver particularly notable fuel efficiency, driver and passenger will enjoy a comfortable, albeit noisy, ride. Most driver-assistance features aren't included in the base package but are available with upgrades.

Lab Results: For family-minded practicality, we'd opt for the four-door hardtop variant, though you can also get two-door and soft-top versions. It adds a third middle seat in the back row, as well as more cargo space. The roof is removable, making it particularly fun for adventurers.

Even with the nostalgic vibe, the infotainment system is plenty modern, featuring Ford's Sync 4 software. It's simple and intuitive and easily integrates with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

  • Available Trims: 2.5T, 3.5T, 3.5T Advanced +

Fully loaded and quite elegant, this two-row SUV is well suited for design-forward, yet comfort-seeking, families. While Genesis is still a young brand, it continues to impress the Good Housekeeping and Car and Driver teams thanks to its audacious, progressive and convenient spin on aesthetically pleasing vehicles. There are so many standard convenience features, it's impossible to list them all. Genius tech includes adaptive cruise control and collision-avoidance and lane-keeping assist.

There's an optional third row that allows the GV80 to seat up to seven, but it's not the roomiest and is suitable only for young kids. Choose captain's chairs or bench seating for the second row.

Lab Results: In test drives, GH analysts were beyond impressed with this Genesis model's smooth, quiet ride — not to mention its surprising value and well-crafted interior. "It's the most comfortable thing I've driven all year!" gushed one tester.

Testers found this luxury SUV comfortable to drive, and it has an impressive warranty. One noted that she loved the unique camera for right turns, the slim and intuitive 14.5" touchscreen and the power liftgate.

  • Length: 189.8 inches

This well-known, long-running nameplate is best for a family that likes to adventure . New convenience and tech features have been added, including optional front and rear interactive displays.

Opt for the V-8 engine: Though it's a bit of a gas guzzler, it provides more power and refinement than the V-6 engine.

Lab Results: This rugged yet refined ride truly delights. "This Jeep is a practical family car that's anything but boring," said one tester. Our engineers were impressed by the three-row L model, which debuted for the 2021 model year and is the first Grand Cherokee that can seat up to seven.

We found the vehicle comfy and spacious for the driver as well as the front and back-seat passengers. And while you'll likely spend more time driving on suburban roads than off-roading, it's nice to know it's an adept off-road vehicle.

2022 bmw x7.

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 19/24 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: Up to 7 seats
  • Available Trims: xDrive40i, M50i, Alpina XB7
  • Length: 203.3 inches

The largest available BMW delivers what you've come to expect from a BMW in the grandest form, designed for affluent families with multiple kids looking to make a statement . In the BMW lineup, this three-row provides the most seating, the most cargo room and the most generous interior dimensions for a BMW vehicle. And BMW doesn't sacrifice on quality, comfort and general refinement — even the third row is richly appointed with a sunroof, climate control, heated seats, USB-C chargers and more. Read: Kids don't have to fight over second- vs. third-row amenities!

The base 335-hp, turbocharged six-cylinder engine is plenty strong, though there's notable acceleration improvement with the M50i's twin-turbo 523-hp, 4.4-liter eight-cylinder and the top-of-the-line 612-hp V-8. And a host of standard features are included like collision warning and mitigation, as well as lane-departure warning.

Lab Results: In our tests we found it easy to put car seats in, both through the door and then into the easily accessible LATCH anchors. The multimedia offerings impressed us in terms of practicality, with a fully digital gauge cluster and large 12.3" central touchscreen display with an added rotary knob for convenience. Our biggest complaints are the limited third-row passenger space (still fine for kids) and limited cargo space behind the third row.

The base 335-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine is plenty powerful, though there's notable acceleration improvement with the M50i's twin-turbo 523-hp4.4-liter V-8 and the top-of-the-line 612-hp V-8. While not as sporty as its sedan counterparts, there was still a level of agility to the X7 that was impressive for its size, and it offers an overall smooth ride. Regardless of the powertrain, the X7 packs in an ultra-quiet, ultra-luxe, feature-laden cabin.

Best Large SUV

  • Miles Per Gallon: 14/19 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: up to 8 seats
  • Available Trims: N/A
  • Length: 210.0 inches

This large SUV is designed for a big family looking to haul all its people and their goods in a rugged, yet handsome package . The AT4, with a 355-hp 5.3-liter V-8 base or more powerful 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 option available, offers a smooth ride experience thanks to its fully independent suspension, 20" all-terrain tires and higher ground clearance. It offers quick acceleration and impressive braking, especially for its size.

If spaciousness is paramount, this vehicle delivers, though you'll certainly sacrifice fuel economy to accomplish this. While we love the AT4 for its ruggedness and capable off-roading qualities, the Denali variant offers more luxury.

Lab Results: While we're specifically calling out the AT4 for its family-friendly toughness, the Yukon nameplate has a variety of engine options, all delivering a refined drive. There's no questioning why it's GMC's best-selling full-size SUV. No matter where you sit you'll be exceptionally pleased. One tester noted: "I'm shocked by how comfortable I am in the third row!"

Last year the Yukon was treated to a full redesign, and the updates for the 2022 model year continue to improve an already great vehicle. Among them is an overhauled Google-based infotainment system and 12" digital gauge cluster, both serious improvements to the multimedia experience. Also noteworthy is that on the AT4 the 15" head-up display is included, which we found helpful for keeping eyes on the road while still being able to gather key information.

Best Luxury Large SUV

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 17/23 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: Up to 8 seats
  • Available Trims: Standard, Reserve, Reserve L, Black Label, Black Label L
  • Length: 210.0-221.9 inches (L in trim = longbase models)

The large luxury Lincoln Navigator SUV delivers an equally luxe interior as its exterior, designed for a cosmopolitan family seeking curb appeal . Its luxurious and spacious interior includes appointments such as leather upholstery, wood details, heated and cooled seats (with optional massagers!) for second-row passengers and ample seating (and USB ports!) even for third-row inhabitants. On the flip side, like with others in this class, the large size means maneuverability isn't as great, and the same for fuel efficiency.

Numerous enhancements outfit the 2022 model year, both on the exterior and interior. While the exterior updates are less notable, the interior updates significantly aid functionality. The upgraded Sync 4 infotainment software, accessible through a larger 13.2" display, provides an improved multimedia experience. ActiveGlide, Lincoln's hands-free semi-autonomous driving system, is now available, as are plenty of other standard and optional driver-safety technology.

Lab Results: The 440-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engine with its smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission delivers a punch, so we don't mind that it's the only powertrain available. It's also notably quick, belying its size.

The Navigator is opulent yet tasteful, and given its enormous size it appears almost expertly tailored. While we're fans of much of the upgrades, our favorite addition for the 2022 model is the available Amazon Fire rear-seat entertainment system, where one passenger can stream The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel while the other basks in Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood .

best new family cars 2022

  • Range: up to 315 miles EPA-estimated range

  • Length: 185.6 inches

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is an ideal vehicle for a family looking for an accessible, full-featured crossover, with the bonus of it being a practical all-electric . The sleek exterior is matched with an equally handsome interior. We were fans of the large 15.5" center touchscreen, which features Ford’s next-gen SYNC 4A infotainment system and is super easy to use.

Much of the driver-assistance tech is available but not included standard. You may want to splurge for upgrades, as this car is eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit.

Lab Results: This zippy all-electric Ford SUV has zero tailpipe emissions — and it's a dream to drive. "Just be ready to turn heads when you're sitting behind the wheel," said one tester. "I got a thumbs-up from other drivers more times than I have fingers."

This athletic SUV offers impressive acceleration and handling, and drivers can take comfort in its lengthy range of up to 315 miles, per EPA estimate (dependent on battery). In our road tests, we found it to be responsive and agile with sporty handling.

  • Miles Per Gallon: 55/49 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Available Trims: EX and Touring
  • Length: 183.6 inches

The 2022 Honda Insight delivers a modestly priced hybrid for those looking for a well-rounded, fuel-efficient vehicle . Even though the Insight is affordable, the interior doesn't feel dingy, and it offers a smooth ride. Honda Sensing, the brand's advanced driver-assist technology, is included standard with features like lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. Our biggest quibble is the noisy engine, but for the price, we're willing to overlook that and just crank up the music.

Lab Results: We appreciate that the battery is under the rear seats, so the trunk is able to provide generous cargo space without obtrusion. If more space is needed, you can use the 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback to pass through large items.

Given its strong fuel economy, we weren't counting on such an enjoyable driving experience. The Insight’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine and electric motor combo is quicker than we imagined, and both confident and responsive. In terms of multimedia displays, the Insight's was decidedly intuitive with well-labeled controls and responsive feedback.

  • Available Trims: LX, LXS, EX, SX, SX-Prestige
  • Length: 203.0 inches

It’s an everything hauler! Called a multipurpose vehicle (MPV), this new Kia is basically a cool, modern updated minivan, making it desirable to moms and dads looking for practicality but not willing to sacrifice aesthetic .

Parents and kids alike will enjoy sitting in the second-row captain’s chairs. We love the panoramic sunroof (standard with highest trim) for maximum pleasure.

It’s offered only as a front-wheel-drive vehicle, and for now, there is no hybrid model as there is for other minivans.

Lab Results: In test drives, we found it to be comfy and well appointed. It drove smoothly and offered a composed, refined ride for passengers and the driver. In tests, it fit 14 simulated carry-on suitcases with the seats up, and it has up to nine available USB charging ports.

“I’m into the boxier SUV look, but thrilled that it retains minivan benefits like ample cargo and passenger space,” said a tester. Dorian noted: “The Carnival proved its mettle in a recent long-distance road trip, where it proved to be a quiet, comfortable, and high-tech highway cruiser with ample cargo space for a family vacation.”

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 26/33 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Length: 191.3 inches

As the name would imply, the Outback Wilderness is a capable off-roading wagon great for an outdoorsy family looking for a stylish-yet-rugged vehicle for its go-anywhere adventures . It builds on the reliable capability of the core Outback line and is loaded with off-road extras like its lifted suspension that provides 9.5” of ground clearance, a more powerful and quick 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and all-terrain tires.

All-wheel drive is standard, which aids in more precise handling and responsiveness regardless of road and weather conditions. The vehicle can tow up to 3,500 pounds and the roof rack can handle up to 220 pounds (700 pounds when stationary, for say, a tent).

Lab Results: We were impressed to find that not only is the exterior extremely rugged, but inside you’ll find water-repellant upholstery. This is great not just for off-grid getaways but also for messy children or pets as it allows for an easy wipe-down.

What we ultimately saw in the Wilderness was an already exceptional vehicle upped to an even higher level. It affords a cushioned ride with strong standard driver-assistance tech including Subaru’s well-regarded EyeSight system.

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 21/28/23 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Available Trims: Premium Plus, Prestige
  • Length: 194.9 inches

The Audi A6 Allroad is a premium mid-size vehicle that stands out for its practical, yet chic, wagon body style, aimed at the luxury market. In general, we’re fans of wagons as they provide much of the safety benefits of SUVs but with a lower center of gravity that usually affords the driver better handling and control. And that’s certainly true here.

There is a lot of standard equipment, including 20” wheels, a panoramic sunroof, hands-free tailgate and wireless Apple CarPlay integration; we wish a few other practical driver-assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control, were standard as well.

Lab Results: Where the Allroad really shines is with its interior. While the split-screen infotainment system takes some acclimating to, it’s easy to use once you do. The spaciousness and luxury appointments abound. Like other wagons it provides impressive cargo space, holding nine carry-on cases in its 30-cubic-foot cargo area, and 20 with the seats stowed away, according to C/D evaluations.

The Allroad provides punchy acceleration thanks to its powerful 335-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine. Coupled with a plush ride and composed handling, the wagon delivers a well-rounded experience with which it’s hard to find any major fault.

Best Hatchback

best new family cars 2022

  • EPA Fuel Economy: Not yet available
  • Available Trims: S, SE, Autobahn
  • Length: 168.0 inches

The all-new Volkswagen Golf GTI is a fun and sporty hatchback designed for driving enthusiasts who also need a practical daily driver . The originator of the sporty hot-hatch segment is back with an updated GTI for 2022 that includes more cargo room, improved vehicle dynamics, an overhauled infotainment system with touch controls, and more robust driver-assistance systems.

Lab Results: The eight-generation Golf GTI simply delights. It offers sharp handling and quick acceleration whether it’s equipped with the six-speed manual or the seven-speed automatic transmission. We found the adaptive cruise control to be effective and reliable and appreciated how responsive and robust the voice commands were. That said, the new capacitive touch controls located on the steering wheel require some acclimation.

Hatchbacks are known for cargo space, and the GTI's is notably impressive. With its sleek design, it's our favorite new entrant in the category.

Best Pickup Truck

2022 ford maverick.

best new family cars 2022

  • Miles Per Gallon: 37/42/33 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Available Trims: XL, XLT, Lariat
  • Length: 199.7 inches

The all-new 2022 Ford Maverick is a great compact truck, versatile enough to meet the demands of a busy family in an urban setting. While some may remember that the original Maverick was a compact car back in the 1970s, the new version is a small pickup that feels spacious and solid. The Maverick might be mini by pickup-truck standards, but its capabilities are not: It offers a 1,500-pound payload capacity regardless of engine and towing capacity of up to 2,000 pounds for the hybrid or 4,000 pounds with the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

It’s built on the same chassis as the Ford Escape and Bronco Sport SUVs, but it sits low, and taller drivers and passengers will have to duck to get in. The Maverick offers a capable and relatively comfortable ride for front-row occupants at a bargain entry price. That said, you'll have to pay up for more robust features, including more convenience and safety tech options.

Lab Results: Like others in the class, this mini-truck offers a firm, controlled ride. While a fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain is standard, those looking for more power can opt for the upgraded turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. No matter the powertrain, you get a great blend of affordability and versatility in this utility vehicle.

Clever storage solutions can be found throughout the Maverick, and the back-seat cushions can flip up to reveal more cubbies. The bed is the prize here, though, larger than other comparable vehicles and cleverly appointed with integrated features such as an adjustable cable for tying things down and cutouts to allow for segmented storage.

How we tested

Since our Best New Family Cars of 2021 was announced, we have been busy evaluating all of the new entrants to the market. Driving nearly 10,000 miles over the course of the year on sprawling highways, winding roads and unpredictable city blocks, we're confident that we're serving up great-performing vehicles that will make car time more enjoyable. Among all the test drives, over 150 car seats were installed and uninstalled, iPhones and Android devices were paired with dozens of infotainment systems and all voice-recognition software were assessed.

✔️ Core performance : Ultimately, the vehicles that are featured scored high enough across our checklist of criteria. Like all products vetted by the Good Housekeeping Institute, safety and core performance is a baseline. Our performance metrics include ratings of smoothness and reaction time of transmissions under varied loads and through a variety of maneuvers such as intermittent passing or mid-speed turns. We take into account the powertrain, which is every component that helps the vehicle move, including the engine and transmission, as well as the driveshaft, axles and differential. We want responsive transmissions that are able to select the appropriate gear. When it comes to handling and maneuverability, we are looking for vehicles that are particularly nimble. We assess how well a vehicle can absorb bumps and potholes in the road without adding obtrusive noise. We even check the parking and turning radius to ensure it is easy to park the vehicle in a tight space.

✔️ Comfort and convenience: Here, we are looking for vehicles that are easy to get in and out of, cup holders and console controls that are positioned and laid out well and easily within reach for the driver, and comfortable seats for front- and rear-seat passengers. As noted, we install car seats in various positions to see how accessible LATCH anchor points are and overall space requirements and possible configurations for setup. In terms of storage, we look at the size and usability of the rear trunk space, factoring in things like storage nets and cargo-area intrusions. We also evaluate the interior storage layout, considering things like the thoughtfulness of the storage options throughout the car, including overhead bins, center consoles, door pockets, map pockets and more.

✔️ Infotainment and controls: We evaluate the infotainment displays, looking for media displays with clarity that are well sized and oriented in a position that will not distract the driver. We likewise look at the primary displays, looking for fonts that are easy to read at a glance. The layout of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) is also evaluated for its placement, simplicity and isolation from other controls that could otherwise confuse its function. The same goes for the steering-wheel controls used for audio, media, voice and phone commands, cruise control, etc. to ensure they are intuitive, responsive and ergonomic. Finally, exterior controls like those for the windshield wipers, lights, and cruise control are reviewed in terms of their uselessness and responsiveness.

✔️ Car and Driver testing metrics: Car and Driver has track-tested all of these cars, measuring everything from acceleration and braking to road noise and rear-seat comfort. We use their comprehensive test data and extensive on-road and track evaluations to help us arrive at our top new cars, SUVs, minivans and pickup trucks. Chief Brand Officer Eddie Alterman says, "If a carmaker makes it, Car and Driver has tested it. We perform deep dives on more than 400 new cars a year, measuring everything from the size of the engine to the size of the cupholders."

✔️ Practical features: We also take note of added practicality or just pure fun elements a car may offer, because while the latest vehicles on the market are incorporating new safety and tech features, they are also layering in aesthetic and convenience options that are particularly important if you have a family. Think: a convenient hidden spot to store your bag, lots (and lots!) of charging ports for all of your gadgets and extra little details to show off your personal aesthetic.

Car buyer's advice

Regardless of what vehicle you settle on, keep in mind the following tips to help you get started:

  • Test-drive for a full day. Push the dealer for the longest possible test drive. Many will allow you to keep the vehicle overnight if you ask. This is helpful as it allows you to check out the headlights after dark and to see how the car fits into your garage.
  • Consider the trim. Powertrains and options may vary, potentially greatly impacting not just the feel but sticker price of your vehicle. Make sure you compare side by side, so there are no surprises after the car is yours.

Road Trip Essentials

Road trip

A road trip is a great way to see the country. Consider stocking up on these accessories before you go.

If you're planning a road trip, you're going to have a lot of work to do before you pack the car and head out of town. You'll need to map out a general itinerary, plan your overnight stops and create a list of must-see sights along the way. And don't forget about all the stuff you need to pack to ensure your family is safe, comfortable and entertained.

While you don't necessarily need a lot of things to make a road trip a success, U.S. News searched far and wide to find the best gadgets and gear that will make your time in the car the highlight of your trip. These are all items you'll want to consider adding to your road trip packing list.

As you pack your bags and get ready for an epic road trip, here are a few last-minute road trip essentials you might want to add to your arsenal, organized by category.

Personal care and hygiene

Entertainment, comfort and convenience.

The booster cables and discharged battery, cold winter day

Keeping a reliable flashlight stored in your car is a good rule of thumb for all drivers heading out on a road trip. In roadside emergencies, the Anker Rechargeable Bolder LC90 LED Flashlight can illuminate a distance of nearly 1,000 feet with a battery life of up to six hours. Its durable design makes it ideal for use in inclement weather, and its five settings include an SOS signal and a strobe light. Meanwhile, the Black Diamond Spot 400 Headlamp – which features a 400-lumen beam and red LED night vision – is ideal for when you find yourself changing a tire in the middle of the night. Both products earn rave reviews from consumers for their powerful light.

Portable power bank

Goal Zero's Sherpa 100AC power bank is a portable power bank you can use to recharge tablets, phones, cameras and laptops on the go. It features two USB ports, plus four cables are included and it's lightweight at just 2 pounds. Recent customers loved the power bank's versatility, but recommend charging it every two to three days for the best results.

Jumper cables

Jumper cables from AUTOGEN can easily fit in your trunk and could save the day if your battery dies and you're unable to start your car while out on the road. Many travelers also say you can't go wrong with these heavy-duty cables from Energizer. These 25-foot-long cables are perfect for any car type and come with a travel bag for easy storage – they're a must for any road trip packing list.

Portable tire inflator

A portable tire inflator can be a lifesaver if you find your tires have a slow leak during your trip. The AstroAl Air Compressor Tire Inflator is compact, so it won't take up much space among the other gear in your trunk, and it includes an LED flashlight with independent switch control. It is programmed to stop automatically once it hits the preset tire pressure and it comes with a 36-month warranty. Other travelers prefer the ViAir 88P - 00088 Portable Compressor Kit , noting it works well with a wide variety of vehicles. In addition to a 12-foot air hose and 9-foot power cord, the kit comes with alligator clamps that power your air compressor by attaching to your car's battery.

Jump starter

Picture this: You're having the time of your life on your road trip when your car battery dies in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, a high-quality jump starter is all you need to avoid this disastrous scenario. In addition to being water-resistant and compact, the NOCO Boost Plus GB40 comes with a built-in flashlight and a USB port for charging devices like smartphones and tablets. The Hulkman Alpha 85 2000A Jump Starter also comes highly recommended by travelers thanks to its easy-to-use design and powerful battery life (a single charge can hold up to 60 jump starts).

Waking up in the morning to an icy windshield isn't a pretty sight. Prestone AS244 Windshield De-Icer instantly melts ice upon contact, so you don't have to worry about waiting for your car to defrost when you're in a rush. As an added bonus, the can comes with a built-in scraper tool for easy ice removal. Recent customers have called this product a lifesaver during harsh winters.

Bringing a trusty multi-tool on your road trip is a simple way to make sure you're prepared no matter what situation you run into. Leatherman products impress consumers time and time again thanks to the company's high-quality and lightweight multi-tool designs. Customer-favorites include the Leatherman Bond and the Leatherman Wave+ , which offers 18 powerful tools like pliers and wire cutters.

Car charger

Frequent car travelers recommend always staying connected with the TECKNET USB Car Charger . Featuring four fast-charging ports, this adaptor can be used to charge smartphones, tablets and more. If you're hitting the road with the whole family in tow, or you simply want to charge more than one device at a time, travelers say this powerful charging adaptor is a must-buy. Pair it with an extra-long charging cable that can easily reach everyone in the back seat.

Dashboard phone mount

Keep your eyes on the road by installing a dashboard phone mount before your journey starts. The iOttie Easy One Touch 5 comes with a telescopic arm, a magnetic cord organizer and a strong-hold suction cup. Plus, its easy one-touch lock-and-release mechanism (a feature that is much appreciated among recent customers) makes taking your phone on and off the holder a breeze. If you don't like the rigidity of traditional dashboard phone mounts, consider choosing a phone mount with a flexible arm instead.

Document holder

Whenever you're hitting the open road, you want to prepare for the worst. In the event that you get into a car accident or are pulled over by the police, having easy access to your car's registration, insurance information and owner's manual is crucial. Recent travelers say that this Samsill car registration holder is great for keeping all your important documents organized.

Although this will arm you with the basics of what you may need in a medical emergency, it's always a good idea to personalize your kit according to your needs.

Hand sanitizer

From gas pumps to ATMs, you never know what germs you may encounter on a road trip. Protect yourself against viruses like the cold and flu by adding a travel-size hand sanitizer to your road trip packing list and keeping it in the car during your trip.

This Stalwart electric car blanket takes up very little space, is surprisingly lightweight and plugs into any vehicle with a 96-inch-long cord. CNN values your feedback

This solo traveler drove from london to lagos in a tiny car.

Morocco

On January 24, content creator Pelumi Nubi, who grew up in London, set off on a solo drive from the UK capital to Lagos, Nigeria in her beloved purple Peugeot 107.

Over two months and a terrifying car crash later, the 29-year-old received a hero’s reception as she arrived in the West African country’s largest city on Sunday after traveling through around 17 countries, including France, Morocco, Senegal and Sierra Leone.

“It’s been an incredible adventure, filled with beautiful surprises,” she said in a statement shortly before completing the epic journey.

Nubi, who was born in Lagos, explains that it’s long been her goal to “showcase that travel can be easy, safe and doable,” particularly for Black female solo travelers like herself.

Incredible adventure

Pelumi Nubi arrives in Lagos.

After seeing the story of Kunle Adeyanju, a Nigerian man who rode from London to Lagos by bike, she began looking into whether any Black women had attempted the journey by car and couldn’t find any record of any.

This particular route was very personal to Nubi as she was keen to connect the two places that she considered as home.

“Each time I went home, I just kind of flew over these places,” she tells CNN Travel, explaining that although she’d traveled to around 80 countries, she hadn’t “done much exploring” in other parts of West Africa and was curious to see more.

While Nubi had previously gone on a road trip around Namibia in a 4x4, and traveled from Ghana to Lagos and back on public transport, her experience of overland travel was relatively limited. In 2023, she traveled to Lake Como, Italy by car as a “trial run.”

“This is a lot bigger in terms of cross continent travel,” she adds.

Pelumi Nubi Lagos

Although 4x4’s tend to be the go-to vehicles for overland journeys, Nubi explains that, as she knew that the trip to Lagos would be very costly, it didn’t seem logical to spend even more money on a new car.

She ultimately decided to use the reliable car she’d had for five years.

“[I thought,] ‘I have a car, why am I going to buy another car that I’m not familiar with?’ So I just kind of embraced it,” she adds.

In order to ensure that her vehicle would be suitable for the 10,000-kilometer journey, Nubi had it specially modified, adding a bed and a kitchen facility inside.

“That took about a month, trying to fit everything into a Peugeot 107,” she says.

After spending around a year preparing for the trip, she set off from London in late January, heading to France, Spain and then Morocco.

“When I crossed into Morocco, I literally broke down crying,” says Nubi. “And it wasn’t sadness.

“It was just this overwhelming feeling of [realizing,] wow, I overcomplicated this process in my head. I really thought it would be more difficult than it was. And it made me wonder what else in my life I was overthinking.”

Frightening setback

Paris France

From Morocco, Nubi drove through the Sahara Desert, considered the largest hot desert in the world, to Mauritania and says that the experience was nothing like she’d thought it would be.

“I was thinking that it [the Sahara] would just be like sand dune, but it was a whole town,” she says. ”It was actually one of the best routes I drove through.”

Once she reached Mauritania, Nubi continued on to Senegal, and then The Gambia; Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ghana.

However, the journey wasn’t without its challenges, some more serious than others.

After being delayed at the border on entering the Ivory Coast, Nubi hit a parked truck while driving at night.

“It was definitely terrifying,” she says. “It [the truck] was parked in the middle of the road. No hazard light. I went sliding into it. I’ve never had an accident in my life, so it was like, ‘What the heck just happened?’”

Thankfully, she wasn’t hurt during the collision, but her vehicle was severely damaged.

While she considered finishing the journey with a different car, Nubi ultimately decided to wait for her Peugueot, which has been nicknamed ‘Lumi,’ to be repaired and continue on with it for the duration.

“There was just this bond,” she says. “She’s seen me on the hardest days. I’ve cried in her. I’ve screamed with joy in her.”

The accident delayed Nubi’s arrival into Lagos, as did the various border delays, including a 48-hour wait to enter Liberia, that she experienced along the way.

“The borders were tougher than the accident,” she says. “Thank God I wasn’t injured in the accident, but the borders were just heartbreaking in terms of the lack of freedom of movement within the African continent.”

After leaving the Ivory Coast, Nubi headed to Togo and then Benin, before arriving at her final destination, Lagos, Nigeria on April 7.

While she’s enjoyed the “audacious” journey immensely, Nubi admits that it was lonely at times.

“Yes, you’re meeting new people, but you miss your mom’s cooking and your bed,” she says.

Bigger picture

Nubi, seen in Kenya before undertaking her London to Lagos challenge, hopes that her travels will inspire us to pursue their dreams.

Nubi, who has been chronicling her journey via her Instagram and YouTube accounts, has been overwhelmed by the support she’s received throughout and says that her online community kept her going during some of the toughest times.

“This has been a solo trip, but it’s really gone bigger than me,” she says. “And then after the accident, it felt like it couldn’t end there. There were just so many people riding on the journey to finish.”

Nubi has had teacher’s getting in touch with her to tell her that their students have been following her journey closely and parents sending her supportive messages from their children.

“The engagement with the society and the people that have rallied me on has just been incredible,” says Nubi. who partnered with American company Osprey early in the journey. “Amazing, amazing memories that I wouldn’t be able to buy or put a price to.”

By putting the spotlight on West Africa, Nubi hopes to be able to help “change the narrative” in terms of the way the region is viewed across the world, and was thrilled to be able to showcase sites like the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro in Ivory Coast, thought to be the largest church in the world.

“In terms of holiday destination, this is possible,” she says. “There’s viability. It’s not just hot and lines, is really just changing that narrative globally as well.”

As for her future plans, she’s contemplating a road trip from Lagos to South Africa. However, Nubi is planning to leave her beloved car behind this time.

“She will be living her best life in Nigeria,” she says, adding that she’d love it if Lumi was put in a “little museum” and potentially inspire future generations.

While she believes that she’s now the first Black solo female traveler to have driven from London to Lagos, Nubi isn’t hugely interested in such titles and says that this was never her goal.

“It was very much [about] inspiring people. In terms of, ‘You think London to Lagos is impossible? I’ve done that.’

“It was about the bigger picture. The accolades are nice but it doesn’t scratch the surface of what I was trying to achieve.”

Nubi is looking forward to spending time with her friends and family, many of whom traveled to Lagos to meet her at the grand finale, as well as having the opportunity to celebrate in style.

“I just proved to myself the strength I have within me,” she says. “So it’s a proud achievement personally.

“But I think it expands way past me, and that in itself is just so joyful.”

Swede dreams are made of this: wild swimming and forest walks in West Sweden

Dissolving into nature is possible in West Sweden, where a new holiday concept offers low-impact stays that don’t compromise on Scandi style

A s I slip off the jetty into the chilly water of Lagmanshagasjön, the world loses all distinction. Low mist blurs everything; I can’t see where the lake ends and the sky begins. It is like breaststroking into a silvery infinity. I haven’t bothered with swimwear. Between the tannin-dark water and early morning brume, I can barely see myself, let alone be seen. And dissolving into nature feels delicious: wearing nothing and seeing nothing, I am feeling everything.

TRAVEL West Sweden (1)

I eventually climb out (flashing an unsuspecting heron), dress quickly and walk back to my “room” – a dazzling cabin made of glass hidden among mossy mounds, blueberry bushes and pine trees. Before long, Katarina arrives with a basket of home-baked sourdough and local cheese. She leaves, and I eat in a silence so loud it seems to vibrate.

That’s partly because I’m well off the tourist trail in Västergötland (West Gotland). Though that may change with places to stay as lovely as this. I’m at Erikson Cottage , a fourth-generation family farm two hours east of Gothenburg . It is a perfect marriage of Swedish taste and sustainability, with three greenhouse-like cabins scattered around the grounds. It’s run by sisters Elisabeth and Katarina, and everything is just so: from the lovely linen to the hygge-ness of Elisabeth’s bakery-cafe – all fresh flowers, candlelight and coffee in handmade mugs.

But there’s substance to the style. The glasshouses are off-grid, and if lifted away would leave no trace. The site has solar panels and its own well. Food is mostly from local suppliers, the bread made with heritage grains. There’s an EV charging point and two nearby train stations from which guests can be picked up.

In a wooded environment sits an off-grid glass cabin, part of the Erikson Cottage family farm two hours from Gothenburg.

Activities on offer at the farm are low-impact, too. Guests can swim (naked or otherwise), kayak and paddleboard out on the lake, walk in the forest and learn to make pizza.

“But 90% of guests do nothing,” says Elisabeth. “They read, lie in bed, read some more. They enjoy slowing down.”

Which is, increasingly, what West Sweden is all about.

In 2021 West Sweden launched Stepping Up Sustainability, a tourism programme looking to minimise the industry’s environmental footprint. But it’s more than a nice green manifesto: West Sweden has put its morals where its money was. The tourist board has ceased marketing to North America and Asia, instead focusing on domestic and European travellers who don’t have to fly from far away. Or even fly at all (I travelled by train).

Then, last year, the region launched “climate smart holidays”, a tourism industry initiative working with a handful of low-carbon accommodation providers to create experience-rich itinerary ideas for exploring western Sweden. The places to stay are between 0.2kg and 1.5kg CO2-equivalent per person per night; the average Swedish hotel creates 6.8kg. (Erikson Cottage scores 0.3kg.) Which is all great, but could be boringly worthy if they weren’t also exceptional places.

I drive to Erikson Cottage in an electric car as part of a tour of several of West Sweden’s climate-smart spots. After a few days of green-chic forest living, I head north, into the land between two huge lakes, Vättern and Vänern, for something different.

Lugnåsberget Ekohotell is a guesthouse converted from a 19th-century farm on one of West Gothland’s hills. Indeed, I barely realise it is on a hill at all until Pia Åkesson, co-owner of the Ekohotell, takes me into its bowels.

The bedrock below the hotel – 1.5bn-year-old gneiss – is especially suitable for making millstones, which people have been doing here since the 12th century. I walk the Stonecutter’s Trail and find the scars of old quarries (about 600 were dug here) and millstones scattered like loose change.

Once a farm, now a hotel, the garden area of Lugnåsberget Ekohotell in West Sweden.

Then Pia leads me into Minnesfjället, one of the area’s mines, now a small museum. She sweeps her torch across the floor: smooth round holes, like cookies cut from pastry, show where men had hacked out the stones using simple picks. Next, she raises her light to the ceiling: “Here you have the first life on Earth – animals that lived 540m years ago.”

We are essentially looking up at an ancient sea floor, left rippled by waves and flecked with fossils of brachiopods and trilobites. “The miners called them planets, moons and stars,” says Pia. They didn’t know, or care, how rare and extraordinary they were. They were too busy trying to extract a livelihood.

after newsletter promotion

This is what Pia and her partner Jesper Persson are doing. “There’s no tradition of B&Bs here,” Jesper says, back at the Ekohotell, over homemade cinnamon buns. “But we long dreamed of having a hostel, and we wanted to show people there are different ways of living.”

For this couple, sustainability isn’t a fad – it’s fundamental. Their solar panels generate more energy than the Ekohotell uses, and produce for the kitchen comes from the couple’s own smallholding or local farms. I plug my car into the on-site charger, but there’s a train station a few miles away, on the scenic Kinnekulle Line. Best of all, guests who stay here, exploring the surrounding biosphere reserve , are pumping money into this little-visited region.

My next stop is in Dalsland, a province between the west bank of Vänern lake and the Norwegian border. It is awash with lakes but has few people. Swedish Country Living , a stylish group of “hermitages” and holiday cottages, looks fresh from a photoshoot, which, as owners Marie and David Naraine previously worked in fashion, is perhaps no surprise. My cabin, the Slate House Hermitage, looks plucked from a fairytale: a little gingerbread home with smoke twirling from the chimney.

Interior, with lit woodburner, at one of Swedish Country Living’s ‘hermitage’ cottages in West Sweden.

But it isn’t just good-looking. It was handmade using wood felled on site, recycled slate tiles and salvaged antique doors and windows, and insulated with wool from the Naraines’ sheep. The shower block runs on a circular system that takes water from the lake, purifies it after use, then pumps it back into the lake. Waste from the toilet becomes compost for the permaculture garden or feed for the apple trees.

David also used to be a chef, and his food – the lamb he rears, goodies from the veg patch – is delicious. There are pilgrim trails and nature reserves on the doorstep. And guests are free to use the lake as they choose.

One day I borrow a canoe. These waterways are sleepy now, the domain of ducks and reeds. So it’s hard to fathom that this was once a trade highway, part of the Dalsland Canal system, linking Lake Vänern with the North Sea. There are no other vessels in sight as I paddle over to uninhabited Björkon island, hauling ashore at the remains of an 18th-century shipyard.

I have the place to myself and spend a while exploring the ruins amid the toadflax and wild strawberries. I clamber through the overgrown dry dock where, a sign reveals, the 28-metre schooner Clara was constructed in 1867. And I sit on a stone slab – part of the old forge, maybe? – trying to imagine the hubbub when Clara set sail for the Black Sea.

Eventually I paddle back. I can see smoke coming from Swedish Country Living’s outdoor spa, the hot tub – hidden discreetly behind the reeds – being fired up for my return. But I am in no rush. I’ve slowed down to West Sweden speed.

The trip was provided by the West Sweden tourist board and Sustainable Journeys . Eri kson Cottage ’s 48-hour package is £ 563 (7,500 krona) for two , including breakfasts and dinner s. Doubles at Lugnåsberget Ekohotell from £1 19 for two nights. A two-night package at Swedish Country Living is £79 6 for two, full board . Sustainable Journeys offers a 14- day Low Carbon Grand Tour of West Sweden , staying at five climate-smart places and including EV hire , from around £1,92 0 pp. The author travelled from London to Gothenburg by train via Brussels, Cologne, Hamburg and Copenhagen; the journey time (with an overnight stay) is from 32 hour s

Travel could be a good deal this summer. Here's when plane ticket prices will peak.

sedan travel

Spring is springing, and according to Hopper, it’s time to start thinking about your summer vacation plans.

New data from the online booking site shows some favorable trends for travelers in the next few months, including slightly lower airfares compared with 2023 and hotel and car rental prices that are more or less flat year-over-year.

Here’s what you need to know as you prepare to book, whether you’re looking for a domestic getaway or go on an overseas adventure. It’s also not too late to take advantage of deals on some last-minute trips.

How much are spring and summer plane tickets?

According to Hopper, the best deals right now are on domestic airline tickets. Round-trip flights within the U.S. are averaging $290 in April, but prices are expected to rise in the months ahead.

Hopper’s data shows prices for domestic flights will peak between May and June at $315 on average, then will gradually fall through the summer, reaching a low of $264 on average in September.

On a call with investors discussing first-quarter earnings Wednesday, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said summer travel demand has been pushed forward in recent years in part because schools, especially in the South, are finishing their summer breaks earlier in the year.

Is airport Wi-Fi safe to use? How to keep your information safe while traveling.

Short vs. long cruises: Which one is right for you? Here's how they compare.

This summer also will be a good time to travel internationally; Hopper data shows fares to most destinations abroad are down compared with last year.

“Airfare to international destinations continues to improve following two years of bloated prices due to quickly recovering demand, high fuel prices and supply constraints. Airfare to most major regions of the world has dropped compared to last year with the exception of trips to Canada,” Hayley Berg, Hopper’s chief economist, said in the report. “International fares remain higher than pre-pandemic levels to most regions, as higher fuel prices persist and airlines continue to rebuild capacity to many regions.”

How much will a hotel room for the spring and summer cost?

Hotel prices remain mostly flat compared with the same time last year. Rooms in the U.S. are averaging $206 a night; better deals are available in some trending international destinations like Osaka, Japan, and Istanbul, Turkey.

According to Hopper, Las Vegas, New York and Chicago remain popular destinations in the U.S.

Will car rental prices rise this summer?

Car rental prices also haven’t increased much since last year and average $42 a day, according to Hopper.

The report shows most travelers rent a car for about four days, and warm-weather destinations like Orlando and Los Angeles remain popular pickup points.

UN committee fails to reach consensus on full Palestinian membership, Security Council president says

From CNN’s Richard Roth and Michael Rios

A specialized UN committee failed to reach a consensus Thursday on Palestinian membership in the United Nations, according to the president of the UN Security Council.

Two-thirds of the committee members were in favor of moving on with membership, with many countries arguing that “Palestine fulfills all the criteria that are required” to be granted full state member status, Malta's Ambassador and Security Council President Vanessa Frazier said.

She added that no one explicitly objected to the membership qualifications.

Frazier also said she would circulate a draft report on the deliberations as soon as Friday. If the committee doesn’t agree on the report, it could hold another meeting to iron out any differences.

Asked whether the process of deliberating Palestinian membership in the committee is now over, Frazier said, “Unless the next step of agreeing (to) the report of the committee warrants another meeting to iron out the differences, it’s not foreseen that there would be any further committee action.”

But she noted that any UN Security Council member can still table a resolution to vote on Palestinian membership at any time, regardless of the committee's report.

The US and Middle East brace for a possible Iran attack that could escalate the conflict. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

People attend the funeral procession for seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members killed in a strike in Syria, which Iran blamed on Israel, in Tehran on April 5.

Concerns about a possible Iranian attack against Israel has prompted many diplomatic conversations around the globe.

Here are some developments on diplomacy around the threat of an attack:

  • Iran's statement: The imperative for Tehran to "punish" Israel for the deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week might have been avoided if the attack had been condemned at the United Nations, Iran’s Mission to the UN said Thursday.
  • US and UK diplomacy: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with the foreign ministers of Turkey, China and Saudi Arabia on Wednesday night and Thursday morning to tell them that countries should be urging Iran not to escalate the conflict in the Middle East after  threats made by Tehran against Israel,  according to a State Department spokesperson. The top US general for the Middle East is also in Israel . Additionally, Britain's foreign secretary warned his Iranian counterpart on Thursday that Tehran “must not draw” the Middle East into a wider conflict .
  • Israel receives US support: Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant spoke with Blinken and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. The US officials expressed the country's support for Israel against Iranian threats. Gallant warned that such an attack could lead to a regional escalation.
  • Travel restrictions: The US State Department restricted the travel of US government personnel in Israel in the wake of public threats against Israel by Iran. “The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events,” the alert noted. US officials  are on high alert  for a potential retaliatory strike by Iran or its proxies against Israel.

Meanwhile, here's some other updates:

  • Hamas on hostages: A member of Hamas' political bureau said   a prisoner-hostage exchange is being discussed as part of larger ceasefire negotiations. "Part of negotiations is to reach a ceasefire agreement to have enough time and safety to collect final and more precise data" on the hostages held in Gaza, Basem Naim said in a statement on Thursday. "Because they (hostages) are in different palaces, (being held) by different groups, some of them are under the rubble killed with our own people, and we negotiate to get heavy equipment for this purpose."
  • Updates on aid to Gaza: It is clear that Israel is working to ramp up humanitarian aid to Gaza, but it has not yet implemented all of the measures it has announced, a top United Nations humanitarian official said. Aid coming in trucks from Israel has to be "segregated from water, from food, from medical items" before it goes into Gaza, said Jamie McGoldrick, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Jerusalem. “Getting 400 trucks from Kerem Shalom doesn't mean 400 trucks go into Gaza,” he said, adding that the logistical complications are numerous, and take time to resolve. He also said Israel’s restrictions on movement inside the strip complicate matters.

Anera charity resumes work in Gaza after pausing when Israeli strike killed 7 World Central Kitchen staff

From CNN's Tala Alrajjal and Mohammed Tawfeeq

American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera) has resumed Gaza operations "after a temporary pause" following an airstrike that killed seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid workers on April 1.

"As you know, the decision to temporarily pause our operations was not an easy one. We followed the direction of our staff in Gaza, who've faced death, loss, and destruction since the start of the war," Sean Carroll, the president and CEO of Anera, said in a statement on Thursday. "After the killing of Anera staff member Mousa Shawwa , followed by the attack that killed seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen, we made the difficult but necessary decision to pause aid operations on April 2," Carroll added in the statement.

Carroll said Israeli authorities informed him during a meeting Thursday that "certain measures would be taken to protect humanitarian aid workers in Gaza – including Anera's staff."

"With the full support of our Gaza team, we have determined that the circumstances have changed sufficiently to resume our vital humanitarian work in Gaza," Carroll said.

Anera on Thursday resumed "full operations in Gaza to deliver meals, food parcels, hygiene kits, tents, medical treatments, and more to families in dire need," according to the statement.

Iran says its imperative to punish Israel could have been avoided had UN Security Council condemned attack

From CNN’s Natalie Barr and Adam Pourahmadi

Emergency services work at a building hit by an air strike in Damascus, Syria, on April 1.

The imperative for Tehran to "punish" Israel for the deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week might have been avoided if the attack had been condemned at the United Nations, Iran’s Mission to the UN said Thursday.

“Had the UN Security Council condemned the Zionist regime’s reprehensible act of aggression on our diplomatic premises in Damascus and subsequently brought to justice its perpetrators, the imperative for Iran to punish this rogue regime might have been obviated," the  mission said on X.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack on April 1, according to a statement from the UN spokesperson Stephan Dujarric. A Security Council discussion was held on April 2 to discuss the attack, but differences among members prevented any formal action or condemnation from taking place.

The United States is on high alert and actively preparing for a “significant” attack by Iran targeting Israeli or American assets in the region  in response to the strike in Damascus  that killed top Iranian commanders.

UK foreign secretary warns Iran not to draw Middle East into wider conflict

From CNN's Natalie Barr

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron speaks during a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington, DC, on April 9.

Britain's foreign secretary warned his Iranian counterpart on Thursday that Tehran “must not draw” the Middle East into a wider conflict following a series of escalating threats made by Iran toward Israel.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron told Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian that the United Kingdom was "deeply concerned about the potential for miscalculation leading to further violence. Iran should instead work to de-escalate and prevent further attacks," according to a post on X .

Iran's state-aligned Tasnim news agency on Thursday reported that Amir-Abdollahian had told Cameron that the silence from the UK and the United States following Israel’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week only served to encourage Israel to continue waging war in Gaza and expand its conflict in the region.

US and Israeli defense leaders discuss fears of Iranian attack

From CNN’s Michael Conte in Washington, DC, Tamar Michaelis in Jerusalem and Larry Register in Atlanta

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant today to “reaffirm the US ironclad commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies,” according to a Pentagon spokesperson.

The call comes a day after Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel " must be punished and it will be" following a strike on an Iranian embassy compound in Syria that killed seven Iranian officials.

Israel “will not tolerate an Iranian attack on its territory,” the statement read, adding that the two defense leaders also discussed detailed preparations “for an Iranian attack against the State of Israel.”

Gallant said an Iranian attack on Israel could lead to a regional escalation.

It is the second discussion held between Gallant and Austin over the past week, according to the statement. Gallant expressed his appreciation for Austin’s personal commitment to the security of the State of Israel and for the deepening cooperation between the defense establishments of both countries, as well as between the Israel Defense Forces and US CENTCOM.

State Department restricts personnel travel in Israel amid concerns over Iranian threats

From CNN's Jennifer Hansler

The US State Department has restricted the travel of US government personnel in Israel in the wake of public threats against Israel by Iran.

“Out of an abundance of caution, U.S. government employees and their family members are restricted from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv (including Herzliya, Netanya, and Even Yehuda), Jerusalem, and Be’er Sheva areas until further notice,” a  security alert  posted by the US Embassy Thursday said. “U.S. government personnel are authorized to transit between these three areas for personal travel.” “The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events,” the alert noted.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said he would not “speak to the specific assessments that led to us to restrict our employees and family members’ personal travel, but clearly we are monitoring the threat environment in the Middle East and specifically in Israel.”

“We have seen Iran making public threats against Israel in the past few days,” Miller said. “Israel is in a very tough neighborhood and we have been monitoring the security situation. You saw us slightly adjust for travel warnings at the beginning of this conflict and we conduct ongoing assessments all the time about the situation on the ground.”

US officials are on high alert for a potential retaliatory strike by Iran or its proxies against Israel.

Hamas says ceasefire with Israel is essential to collect data on hostages held in Gaza by different groups

From CNN's Abeer Salman and Mohammed Tawfeeq

A member of Hamas' political bureau said   a prisoner-hostage exchange is being discussed as part of larger ceasefire negotiations.

"Part of negotiations is to reach a ceasefire agreement to have enough time and safety to collect final and more precise data" on the hostages held in Gaza Basem Naim said in a statement on Thursday. "Because they (hostages) are in different palaces, (being held) by different groups, some of them are under the rubble killed with our own people, and we negotiate to get heavy equipment for this purpose," he added.

Naim's statement was in response to questions from media outlets about whether Hamas has been rejecting the latest proposal, which was made in Cairo over the weekend, because it can not release 40 hostages in the first phase of a three-stage ceasefire deal.

According to an Israeli official and a source familiar with the discussions, Hamas indicated it is currently unable to identify and track down those 40 Israeli hostages, raising fears that more hostages may be dead than are publicly known.

CNN's record of the conditions of the hostages also suggests there are fewer than 40 living hostages who meet the proposed criteria.
