Port Canaveral Cruise Parking (Where to Park) Options, Prices, and Map

Looking for Port Canaveral parking during your cruise? The good news is that you’ll have plenty of choice across all price ranges.

Parking Garage 3 at Port Canaveral

These days, Port Canaveral has turned into one of the busiest — and most popular — ports in the entire nation. Millions of passengers each year take cruises from the terminals near Orlando.

Of course, that means millions of people each year have to make their way to the port and many drive their vehicle. And since there is such a large market for a place to park, a number of lots have sprung up to offer you a spot while you enjoy your cruise.

One thing you should know — the port sits in a large complex on its own, meaning space for third-party parking lots right next to the port is sparse. However, the port does offer parking of its own at your ship, but it can be expensive.

There are other options that are more affordable, as long as you don’t mind a shuttle ride to the terminal. Most shuttles are quick trips (less than 10 minutes) and can drop you off right at the ship. Parking lots include these rides for free in their rates.

Below, we cover your parking lot options, along with details of each lot to help you find the right spot for you.

Port Canaveral Parking Options for a Cruise

Note: Most lots in the area charge parking fees for both the day you arrive and the day you leave. So if you take a 7-day cruise (e.g., departing Sunday afternoon and returning back the following Sunday morning), you will be charged for eight days of parking.

Rates below are estimated (including taxes/fees) and are subject to change. Want to save money? See our page on Port Canaveral parking discounts and coupons .

Port Canaveral Official Parking Parking at the port is by far the most convenient. Parking lots and garages are next to each cruise terminal, making for a very short walk to check-in. For that convenience, however, you will pay a higher price — $17 per day, including both the day of arrival and departure.

Parking is payable via credit card. Disabled parking is free of charge, if your vehicle has special equipment such as ramps or foot/hand controls, have a Florida Toll Exemption Permit, or have a Florida Disabled Veteran license plate. More details are here .

Given the proximity of the lots to the cruise terminal, we wouldn’t blame anyone for paying the higher prices. However, cheaper options are available if you’re looking to save.

  • Cost: $17 per day
  • Distance: At terminal

Port Parking Space The newest lot to offer cruise parking is also the closest off-port option. It’s located adjacent to port property, meaning you can be at your ship within minutes. The lot offers 24/7 on-site monitoring, included shuttle to your cruise ship, and parking that’s a sharp discount to what you’d pay at the port.

According to the lot, parking runs $12.95 per day — about 25% cheaper than parking at the port. However, they also offer discounts that can get that rate down even further to $11.66 per day (10% off). There are also military and travel agent discounts available. A handful of electric vehicle chargers are also offered at the parking lot. Note that parking for Disney ships is not offered.

  • Cost: $12.95 per day, plus taxes and fees
  • Distance: 0.5 miles (free shuttle provided)
  • Website: https://portparkingspace.com/

Sign for Park Port Canaveral

Park Port Canaveral Located about three miles (5-minute drive) from the cruise terminals, Park Port Canaveral is one of your many options for off-site cruise parking. We found a daily rate of $12.85 plus tax for an advance reservation, but there are discounts available (including 15% off for signing up for their mailing list). In additional, there are additional taxes and fees you’ll have to pay, but the rate is still considerably less than parking at the port.

The lot offers a complimentary shuttle to and from the port, which is just a few minutes away. Like other lots, Park Port Canaveral charges both for the day of arrival and the day of departure.

  • Cost: $12.85 per day, plus taxes and fees
  • Distance: 3 miles (free shuttle provided)
  • Website:  http://www.parkportcanaveral.com

Park N Cruise Port Canaveral Park N Cruise is located right before you cross the water to the port and it’s only a few miles from the terminals. The rate is $12.99 per day for most cars. Keep in mind that as with most lots you will need to pay for the day you arrive and the day you leave. All told, with taxes and fees the rate runs about $120 for a week cruise.

Looking for a discount? There are a number of specials with discounts of 5-10% for veterans, public service workers, AAA members, and AARP members.

  • Cost: $12.99 per day, plus taxes and fees
  • Website: https://www.parkncruiseportcanaveral.com/

GoPort The parking package from GoPort has a different spin — they don’t charge for parking but offer it free. Instead, you pay for the shuttle to the cruise port. They also currently only offer service for Carnival Mardi Gras. If you are sailing any other ship, you’ll need to find an alternative lot to park.

Rates start at $60 for up to four passengers for a weeklong Mardi Gras cruise. That comes out to $7.50 per day, or less than half what the official Port Canaveral lots charge. In other words, you save about $80 over the course of your cruise by parking here.

  • Cost: $60 for a 7-day cruise (Carnival Mardi Gras only)
  • Distance: 6.5 miles
  • Website: https://www.goport.com/

Port Canaveral Parking Port Canaveral Parking is located on Merritt Island, just about 10 minutes from the cruise ships. It charges rates of $12.95 per day for parking, which is roughly $4 cheaper versus parking at the cruise terminals (like other lots, discounts are common , including a recent ‘flash sale’ for 24% off).

There is also covered parking available, costing an extra $20 for your stay. A shuttle is provided to the cruise port until 1:15 p.m.

  • Cost: $12.95 per day ($20 extra for covered), plus taxes and fees
  • Distance: 6.5 miles (free shuttle provided)
  • Website: https://portcanaveralparking.com/

Cruisetime Parking and Shuttle Cruisetime is located southwest of Port Canaveral, on Merritt Island. It’s only about 8.5 miles from the port and the ride to the terminal takes about 15 minutes. Parking rates are simple — $10 per day, but that includes the day of your arrival and departure. Cruises of four days or less are a flat $50.

So it is $80 for a 7-day cruise and $50 for a four-day trip. Cruisetime also offers a complimentary shuttle to and from the port that’s included with your parking.

  • Cost: $10.00 per day
  • Distance: 8.5 miles (shuttle provided)
  • Website: https://www.cruisetimeparking.com

Beachline Shuttle Similar to what’s offered by GoPort, Beachline Shuttle offers “no charge” parking, but you pay for the ride over to the port. Unlike GoPort, the lot offers parking for all the cruise lines meaning you can save considerably over parking at the port no matter who you sail.

Prices vary only on how many passengers are sailing. If you need a shuttle to the port for two passengers, it’s $60. Prices are $70 for three riders and $80 for four. Contact the lot if needing space for five or more passengers.

  • Cost: $60 for a 7-day cruise
  • Distance: 5 miles (shuttle provided)
  • Website: https://www.beachlineshuttle.com

Individual Hotels   In addition to cruise parking lots, another option is parking at a hotel. Port Canaveral has lots of hotels near the port and many also offer free or discounted parking if you stay the night before your cruise. As well, they will often have a shuttle to the port on cruise day.

Note that some hotels require you to book a package to receive parking. Due to the health crisis, some packages may be paused temporarily until cruises return in full.

If you are staying in the Port Canaveral area, see our list of hotels that will allow you to park your car for the length of your cruise .

Frequently Asked Parking Questions

Is there free Port Canaveral parking? Yes, if you are disabled, then you might receive free parking at the port. For ports in Florida, cars for disabled passengers that have special equipment (like ramps, lifts, or special controls) can get free parking for their cruise .

As well, Port Canaveral’s official lots offer free parking for disabled veterans with a Florida license plate with that designation.

Where should I park? If you are driving in, your parking decision rests mainly on if you want to save money or want convenience. For those looking to save, we suggest parking at an off-site parking lot. Their rates are considerably less and you can still take the shuttle right to the cruise ship. The downside is that you have to wait for the shuttle going to and from the ship.

If you want the most convenience, check out parking at the actual port. Yes, it’s more expensive, but you can walk right to the ship. It also makes it easier to get back home when you return from your trip.

Why am I being charged for 8 days for a 7-day cruise? One thing we’ve noticed is that parking lots in the area charge an extra day for your cruise. Say you have a 7-day cruise that leaves Sunday afternoon and returns the following Sunday morning. In total, you were gone for seven full days. However, by the clock, your car was on the lot for eight different calendar days counting both the day you arrived at the parking lot and the day you depart. Even if you pick your car up first thing on Sunday morning, the parking lots charge for an additional day.

Can I park at a hotel for cheaper? Yes. As a perk to entice cruise passengers many hotels in the area have parking packages. Simply stay a night and the hotel will allow you to park your car and provide a shuttle to the port. It’s an easy way to save if you plan to stay in the area beforehand. See our list of Port Canaveral park and cruise hotels here .

I am being dropped off for a MSC cruise. Where can my son drop me off?

Right at the terminal. Just follow the signs!

DO THE PARKING LOTS PARK THE CAR FOR YOU OR DO YOU HAVE TO RIDE AROUND AND LOOK FOR A SPOT

I just found out that GoPort is working only with Carnival Mardi Gras indefinitely so you might want to remove them from your list.

Thanks for letting us know. Will update this article with the new details soon.

You listed Canaveral cruise parking at 6.95 a day 3 miles south of the port. Where or what site do I go go to find this company. I have tried searching to no avail

This is a lot that paused operations during the pandemic. They may not have returned to business.

Are you able to park a transport truck with flatbed trailer at any lots near port. My husband is meeting me and my kids there while he is taking a break from work and will have his truck.

Given the special circumstances, I’d recommend calling the lot to see what they can do.

These numbers dont make sense. 5 day is a 4 night. so arriv monday and leave friday. 5 days times $17 is nt 102?

A five-day cruise is also five nights (cruise lines don’t count the day you arrive back in port). So a 5-day/night cruise would depart Monday (1), Tuesday (2), Wednesday (3), Thursday (4), Friday (5), arrive back in port Saturday morning.

Parking lots here charge for the day you arrive and the day you leave. The parking lot would charge you for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. So a five-day/night cruise is charged for six days of parking. $17*6 = $102.

Just trying to find out if you have RV parking. Says you do but I cannot find any info about it

We are not a cruise parking lot; we’ve instead written an article about your options. The cruise terminal offers RV parking. If you need more details, you can call them at (321) 783-7831.

Have you heard of Port Canaveral VIP Valet? Operated by AutoCare Concierge. They offer a $99 flat rate with drop off service (your car).

Do they ever run out of spaces at the port? I ask because they don’t let you reserve a space anymore.

Not that we have ever heard of. If it were to happen (highly unlikely) there are the off-site parking lots as well.

Did I book my Parking for Sat Dec 30, 2017 ????

Mr. King, we are not the parking lot’s website. We just list the parking options.

Park n Cruise was great…prompt, polite and 1/2 the cost.

Hear what our customers are saying:

“We have parked other places, but tried Park N Cruise for our recent cruise. Everyone was super helpful and the whole process was efficient. We didn’t have to wait at all either at drop off or pick up. With other services, we had to make multiple stops to pick up and drop off passengers on multiple ships. We loved that there were dedicated shuttles for each ship. Great location near the port and reasonable price! Will definitely use them again for our next cruise.” Amy Lindgren

“No issues whatsoever. Good price! Driver (Joel?) was friendly and explained departure and arrival instructions clearly. Arrived, left the car, and was transported to the cruise port within 15 minutes, suitcases were handled well, and the car was ready for us when we got back.” Jill Troutman

“Great experience. Will be using them again and telling everyone we know to use this service. Seriously the easiest part of our whole vacation. Vehicle was kept safe and easy to pick up and drop off. Thank you!” Meghan Brown

But what about on-site options ? Today we’re going to be going over the pros and cons of parking at the cruise ship terminal in our guide to on-site parking at Port Canaveral.

Navigating Port Canaveral Cruise Terminals

Our six cruise terminals are 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 10. Cruise Terminal A is home to terminals 5, 6, 8, and 10, while 1 and 3 are located in Cruise Terminal B . The split can be a little confusing for travelers, especially if you can’t remember where the cruise lines are docking at.

Cruise Terminal B is where you can also go for a bite to eat, to see the port at the Exploration Tower, or check out CT-3, our brand-new multi-million dollar spot for the largest ships. Terminal A is less exciting, but it hosts more ships as well as the cargo piers.

Official Port Canaveral Parking

Every cruise terminal has it’s own official parking facility (although some terminals share parking spots). The port runs these locations, which include covered garage parking as well as uncovered parking lots located near the terminal entrance.

The parking spots are first-come, first-served , meaning there’s no reservations and no pre-pay. You can also splurge and pay a little extra for “preferred parking”, which some terminals offer for those who want to park even closer to the ship.

While convenient, we do have some bad news: it’s $17.00 per day for the basic parking at the port. That means that for a four-night cruise, you’ll be paying $85 in parking fees alone.

Here’s a short breakdown of the pros and cons of on-site port parking.

Pros of parking at the ship

  • Spots are right at the ship . It’s true, you wouldn’t be able to park closer to the ship unless they let you bring your car on the boat.
  • Many say it’s more convenient. When you embark and disembark, you never have to worry about getting to your car.
  • It’s pretty easy. Unlike other parking facilities, you only get one option. You won’t have to choose between locations. At the port, you get what you get.
  • The port terminals offer free cruise parking for vehicles that need parking options for disabled passengers with special equipment, for those with a Florida Toll Exemption Permit, and for those who have a Florida Disabled Veteran license plate. However, this is the only free parking option from the Canaveral Port Authority.

Cons of Parking at the Cruise Port

  • Being next to the cruise ships is great – but the covered parking lot is not just a short walk from the ship. There’s no free shuttle service, so you’ll be toting your stuff from the luggage drop-off on debarkation day.
  • There are no reservations . If the cruise parking lots are full for your cruise line, you’ll have to find other arrangements.
  • Prices are subject to change , according to the website for the Port Canaveral terminals. While the base price is $17 per day, you may end up paying even more for your cruise parking.
  • Traffic can be terrible, congested, and complicated for visitors. If you’re driving yourself, be prepared for wrong turns and sitting in Port Canaveral traffic.

Alternate Port Canaveral Parking options

When it comes to finding places to park, Port Canaveral has other parking deals for your cruise adventure.

We always recommend that parties park off-site. Not only do you get access to free shuttles that drop you off right at the cruise port, many places (like Port Canaveral Parking) offer security and top-notch customer service that doesn’t come with a sky-high price tag.

All of our cruise packages for parking involve no transportation fees (your shuttle ride is complimentary!) and parking rates that are nearly half of the terminal parking.

We go to all Port Canaveral cruise lines, including Disney, Royal Caribbean International, MSC Cruises, Norwegian, and Carnival. Make same-day reservations or plan months ahead to guarantee your Port Canaveral parking spot!

Port Canaveral Hotel Cruise PArking

If you’re staying in Cocoa Beach, there are some locations that offer Port Canaveral cruise parking. The Holiday Inn Express, Country Inn, Radisson Resort, and other hotels will let you leave your vehicle during your vacation.

However, these packages are often much more expensive than leaving your car at a cruisetime parking facility. If you’re cruising on a budget or want to save up for some souvenirs, hotel parking is NOT the way to go.

‘Why is our tail on fire’: Carnival Freedom ship catches fire after possible lightning strike

Smoke spewed from the funnel of the Carnival Freedom on Saturday after what passengers said was a lightning strike.

The cruise ship, which sails from Port Canaveral, Florida, caught fire on Saturday afternoon, Carnival Cruise Lines said in a news release obtained by CNN .

The fire was seen coming from the port side exhaust funnel when the ship was about 20 miles from Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas. It was on the way to Freeport on Grand Bahama Island.

In a video shared to CNN , the person recording can be heard asking, “Why is our tail on fire?”

The ship’s fire response team was able to put out the flames. At the same time, the captain turned the ship into heavy rain to allow the storm to help extinguish the blaze, which was confined to the funnel, USA Today reported.

Within two hours, it was put out. No guests were hurt. Two firefighting crew members, however, had to be treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Passengers were informed by the ship’s captain about the incident, who told everyone — except for essential safety crew members — to stay away from balconies and open decks, USA Today reported.

Part of the exhaust funnel fell onto deck 10, the company said. But despite the damage and fire, passengers were able to attend their dinner as planned on Saturday.

The ship was examined after it arrived in Freeport, and it was found that the damage was more extensive than originally thought. The Freedom was scheduled to leave Port Canaveral on Monday, but that trip and the one that was to take place on March 29 have both been canceled to allow for “immediate repair to stabilize the funnel” the company said, according to WFTV . The ship will return to Freeport for repairs on Monday.

Those scheduled to sail on the canceled cruises will get full refunds and credits for future travel.

Passengers said that it might have been a lightning strike that caused the fire, but that has not been confirmed by the company.

The Carnival Freedom has a double occupancy of 3,754 and 1,150 crewmembers. It started sailing in 2007 and it’s country of registry is listed as Panama.

The Port Canaveral-based Carnival Freedom just received its new funnel less than six months ago, but it has suffered more damage because of another fire on board this past weekend as it was sailing in the Bahamas.

Carnival reported the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel was damaged in a fire at 3:15 p.m. Saturday as it was about 20 miles off the coast of Eleuthera Island, Bahamas as it was heading to Freeport. The ship had skipped over a port of call at Princess Cay because of bad weather.

“The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames,” according to an update on X by the cruise line. “Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike and that is being investigated.”

This is the same ship that had its funnel burn away in 2022 to the point the ship had to sail without the iconic “whale tail” shape until it went in for a replacement last October during a dry dock in Spain.

“The captain has made multiple announcements to guests and crew and advised all but essential safety personnel to stay away from all open decks. There are no injuries. The port side portion of the funnel has fallen onto Deck 10 and the fire response is putting out the flames,” the line said Saturday.

At the time, the line also stated its sailings from Port Canaveral this week would not be affected, but both a Monday and Friday sailing have been canceled. Its next departure is not slated until at least April 4.

Carnival Freedom's next two cruises from Port Canaveral canceled after exhaust funnel fire

A fire in the exhaust funnel of the Carnival Freedom this weekend has disrupted a cruise of the Port Canaveral-based ship for the second time in less than two years — and will mean that the ship's next two cruises are canceled.

Damage to the funnel will require the cancellation of Carnival's next two cruises out of Port Canaveral, which were scheduled to depart Monday and Friday.

Thousands of passengers with scheduled cruises will be affected by the canceled cruises during a busy spring break period for Carnival and other cruise lines.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Carnival initially had said it expected no changes in its upcoming cruises, but on Sunday afternoon said the cancellations would be required.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," according to a statement issued by Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

Carnival said it made the decision after "our technical team completed a thorough assessment" during the ship’s visit Sunday to Freeport in the Bahamas.

In the statement, Carnival said: "We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both canceled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit, so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support."

In a Facebook post, Carnival's widely followed brand ambassador, John Heald, conceded that many people who booked one of the canceled cruises are "feeling very disappointed," and he apologized for the turn of events.

But, Heald added that he wanted to assure affected passengers that, "when you rebook, using your full refund and your 100% future cruise credit, that the crew will be standing by to give you all the fun you deserve."

More than 500 people responded to the post, with many saying they thought Carnival was generous with the compensation offer. But some people who said they were on the cruise that experienced the fire said they thought Carnival should have done more for the people who were on the ship.

Carnival said the fire was confined to the funnel area. The cruise line said there are no reports of injuries to passengers. Two firefighting crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Carnival said that, at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to the Carnival private island of Princess Cay due to adverse weather.

Details of previous fire: Fire breaks out on Carnival Freedom while Port Canaveral-based ship was in Grand Turk

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. "Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated, but cannot yet be confirmed."

By 5:20 p.m. Saturday, the fire was extinguished.

Carnival said the ship's captain made multiple announcements to passengers and crew, and advised all but essential safety personnel to stay away from balconies and all open decks.

The port-side portion of the funnel had fallen onto Deck 10, and the firefighting response put out any flames.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been notified of the fire, and Carnival activated its incident response team to support the ship’s crew.

Carnival said there were no other operational issues with the ship’s systems, and the ship, which was on a four-night cruise, was visiting Freeport on Sunday.

The Freedom sailed into the channel at Port Canaveral around 7:30 a.m. Monday, and docked at Cruise Terminal 6, letting off the passengers who were on the cruise. Carnival then awaited a Coast Guard inspection of the ship before it could be cleared to leave Port Canaveral for the Freeport shipyard for repairs. The ship left the port about 6:20 p.m.

A cruise ship funnel generally serves as a smokestack to lift emissions above the deck, thus away from passengers and crew.

On Saturday evening, "Carnival Freedom guests enjoyed the Elegant Night dinner as planned, and, with the exception of the open decks, all areas of the ship are fully functioning," Carnival said in its statement.

The sailing had about 3,700 passengers onboard. And the two upcoming sailings that were canceled each likely would have had a similar passenger count, because this is a busy time for the cruise industry.

The Carnival Freedom's next voyage was scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday afternoon on a five-night Eastern Caribbean cruise. That cruise had port-of-call stops scheduled at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic and at Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

But that sailing and a Friday sailing both have been canceled. Friday's five-night sailing also was scheduled to stop at those two ports of call, but in reverse order.

In May 2022, a fire broke out in the funnel area of the Carnival Freedom while it was docked in Grand Turk. Carnival then canceled three scheduled sailings of the Carnival Freedom out of Port Canaveral because of the need to repair the ship's fire damage at a shipyard in Grand Bahama.

More recently, in October 2023, the Carnival Freedom debuted a new iconic winged funnel after returning from a 16-day dry-dock refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain.

2 crew members die on Holland America ship; fire breaks out on Carnival cruise

MIAMI — Two crew members died on board a Holland America cruise ship, and a fire broke out on a Carnival ship while both of the ships were in the Bahamas this weekend, officials said.

The two crew on the Florida-based Nieuw Amsterdam died Friday during an "accidental steam release" while it was calling at the private resort island Half Moon Cay, Holland America said in a statement on Sunday.

"There was an accidental steam release in an engineering space on board Nieuw Amsterdam, which sadly resulted in the death of two crew members," the cruise line said.

The Bahamas Maritime Authority and the Dutch Safety Board were investigating the exact cause of the release, Holland America said.

A representative of the Bahama’s Coroner’s Court did not immediately respond to a request for information, such as the crew members’ identities and the cause and manner of death.

The cruise line said the conclusions of any investigation would be taken seriously. "Safety is always our top priority, and we are working to understand what, if anything, can be learned from this tragic accident," it said.

Passenger Laine Doss said she was on board when the captain announced the deaths on the vessel's P.A. system.

"We were celebrating the last day of the cruise," she said, when the mood changed "to something extremely somber."

The captain's voice broke, she said.

"He broke down crying," Doss said. "There was a moment of silence that the captain requested. And that entire scenario did affect the entire cruise. Things were canceled, joyous events were canceled, and we really just thought about mortality — the people who perished on the ship."

Crew members were being offered counseling, Holland America said.

Dutch government inspectors determined the vessel to be "fully operable," and this was "confirmed" by the U.S. Coast Guard, the cruise line said.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson said she was looking into the statement and was unable to immediately confirm it.

The Nieuw Amsterdam returned Saturday to its home port of Fort Lauderdale, guests disembarked, and the vessel has embarked on a cruise with a stop in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on Monday, Holland America said.

"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this event," the cruise line said. "We’ve been in contact with the families of both team members and are offering our support to them and to all of our crew at this difficult time."

The ship set sail out of Fort Lauderdale on March 16 for a seven-night trip.

Fire on the port-side exhaust funnel of another Florida-based cruise ship in the Bahamas, the Carnival Freedom, rocked some passengers Saturday and took the ship out of commission for repairs, the cruise line said.

No injuries were reported.

In a statement Sunday, Carnival Cruises acknowledged witness reports of a lightning strike or the sound of thunder before the fire erupted.

Passenger Heath Barnes said the ship was on a detoured path, destined for an unscheduled stop in Freeport, as a result of stormy weather and high winds when fire started.

"I was shocked," he said. "I mean, I looked out there and you're not supposed to see black smoke and fire shooting out of the tail end of the cruise."

The blaze was preceded by "the loudest thunder-lightning clap that I've ever heard in my life," Barnes said.

Ship personnel extinguished the fire, Carnival Cruises said.

The cruise line said a technical team determined the ship sustained enough damage that it will need repairs before it can be returned to scheduled cruises. The funnel was stabilized, passengers were expected to be returned to Port Canaveral, and the ship will set off to Freeport for repairs, it said.

"The damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," Carnival Cruises said.

Passengers scheduled for those late-March cruises are being offered full refunds and credit that can be used for a future cruise, it said.

It was the second funnel fire on the Carnival Freedom since 2022.

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – The Carnival Freedom ship caught fire Saturday near the Bahamas after passengers reported a lightning strike on the boat during a thunderstorm .

Carnival Cruise Line said the crew reported a fire on the port side of the ship's exhaust funnel around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas, sailing to Freeport after being unable to dock at Princess Cay due to weather conditions.

"Our onboard team acted quickly to contain and put out the fire," Carnival Cruise Line said. "While we continue to investigate multiple eyewitness reports of a lightning strike, our technical team completed a thorough assessment during the ship’s visit to Freeport on Sunday."

During the afternoon, the rain returned, and passengers reported hearing loud thunder and then seeing the smoke. Soon after, guests were told to remain in their cabins.
