'Supply and demand on steroids' as peak Sydney to Melbourne flights exceed $900. What does it mean for holiday travel?
If you're not a fan of watching race cars go around in circles, you may have gotten a shock if you needed to book a flight from Sydney to Melbourne this week.
With Formula 1 grand prix events kicking off at Melbourne's Albert Park on Thursday, it was rare to spot a one-way fare for less than $400 from Monday.
By Wednesday, across Jetstar, Rex, Virgin and Qantas, flights were a minimum of about $500 to upwards of $900.
In some instances, it was cheaper to book a seat in business class than economy.
While it's not uncommon for airlines to hike up prices around sporting events, holidays and concerts, Chris Ford from Compare the Market said with Easter approaching this was a "double whammy".
"It's sort of a double hit that can extend over a period of time," he told the ABC.
Experts have called it "supply and demand on steroids" during peak periods.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) monitors the prices and profits of the major domestic airlines but plays no role in regulating fares.
So, airlines have the freedom to increase prices according to market demand and conditions, aviation analyst and associate professor at RMIT, Chrystal Zhang, said.
"The key question is really, 'How high can the airline go?'"
She warned nowadays people need to book trips months in advance and be willing to be flexible around "hot events" and holidays.
Best days to avoid Easter holiday hikes
Concerts and events generally only lead to fluctuations over a few days, Mr Ford said.
But when Taylor Swift mania took hold last month, airfares to Sydney and Melbourne spiked over a sustained period, even across regional airports.
In the lead-up to Easter, Compare the Market analysed which days were best to travel and how long it would take for prices to start to drop.
It found consistent patterns in its reviews over Christmas, showing fares inevitably "skyrocket" before public holiday days.
Comparing where prices were at about two weeks out from Easter, there was a difference of hundreds of dollars between the cheapest and most expensive days to fly.
With the Easter long weekend falling on March 29 to 31, flights out of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to the rest of Australia's major cities were the most expensive on March 28.
The cheapest days in the lead-up were between March 18 and 22.
On the other side, flights were most affordable from April 4 to 12.
Prices will continue to rise
Over the last two weeks, flights have been increasing incrementally along key routes, and are expected to continue to rise, Mr Ford said.
"We're not talking hundreds of dollars at this point in time, but it will be interesting over the next few days to see how much they do nudge up."
This week, flights from Brisbane to Sydney were about $170 one-way on March 28, Mr Ford said.
They come down to $110 on April 4, then a few days later prices are at $74.
"You're looking at around $100 from peak to trough over a two-week period," he said.
On the Melbourne to Sydney route, a flight on March 28 this week was selling for around $180 depending on the flight times.
When Compare the Market analysed flights a week ago, the most expensive flight from Melbourne to Sydney on March 25 was $174.
Now, with the pinch of grand prix demand and most flights being close to sold out, the cheapest flight is about $400.
By April 9, there are flights for $52.
Weekend crowds at the international racing event are expected to exceed 440,000.
"If there is a lesson to be learned for future needs, it's doing that research as early as possible," Mr Ford said.
How far should you book in advance?
There are some opportunities to find cheaper prices as holidays approach, but it depends on how much time you have and if you're open to "inconvenience", Mr Ford said.
Generally, flights will be less expensive during early mornings and late nights, and from regional airports.
"You need to be able to be more flexible and open to travelling slightly out of town, or getting to the airport at 4am for a 6am flight," he said.
But, the best way to avoid getting stung is to book early, and check terms and conditions in case flights are cancelled, Professor Zhang said.
She suggested these days it's best to generally book flights about three months in advance.
"Two to three months before you plan the travel is a kind of suggested time to finalise your schedule and your overall itinerary," she said.
Depending on the demand of the particular route, you will start seeing prices rise up to two to three weeks, she added.
"And you really need to be mindful of these very hot events in hot destinations, whether that's a big conference or a popular sporting event."
'People will still fly'
Rico Merkert, professor of operations and supply chain management at the University of Sydney, said there have always been increases during peak seasons, but it has become more excessive since the COVID pandemic.
"Supply and demand on steroids," he told the ABC.
"What happened is that we didn't have enough capacity or [there was] reduced capacity."
Now, there are chances to "capture an audience" when there are holidays and events like a Taylor Swift concert.
"Sydney to Melbourne is one of the busiest routes on the planet, so it's difficult for airlines to add more capacity — more flights," Professor Merkert said.
"But they see that suddenly everyone wants to fly so that means they can easily increase the fares and know people will still fly."
Jetstar said strong demand from Sydney to Melbourne was a factor in their high prices this week.
"Most customers book well ahead of when they want to travel and like all airlines, our cheapest fares sell out first," Jetstar said in a statement to the ABC.
Falls into 'price gouging' but is it illegal?
These practices are unfortunate for people who have no choice but to book last-minute travel, Professor Merkert said, adding that it would "fall into the category of price gouging".
It also isn't isolated to airlines, with petrol prices already increasing in the lead-up to Easter.
"It's the same with a car, if you have to drive to Orange (in regional NSW) to see your family, you might be able to take a train but there are all sorts of other destinations in NSW where you have to travel further and you have no choice," he said.
The ACCC said increasing prices during periods of high demand is not illegal, but businesses just need to provide clear and up-front information about the price consumers will pay.
Currently, competition is the best hope of keeping prices within reason.
"The ACCC tries to ensure that there's sufficient competition in the market," Professor Merkert said.
"If there are two or three airlines in this space, surely one will have a slightly better deal.
"But in fact, if one raises fares by 30 per cent, then the others won't be far behind."

Easter travel chaos: Drivers warned to expect traffic gridlock this weekend with 18.5million drivers taking to the road on Saturday as Bank holiday break coincides with end of school term
- 2.3million getaway trips planned for each of Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday
- Services on Avanti West Coast, Greater Anglia and Elizabeth line to be impacted
Britons were today warned to expect Easter travel 'carmageddon' with 14million getaway trips set to cause gridlock on the roads and major rail routes closing.
Road journeys could take twice as long as normal because the bank holiday weekend coincides with the start of a two-week holiday for many schools, the RAC said.
Rail travel will also be disrupted by engineering works, with the southern section of the West Coast Main Line closed between Good Friday and Easter Monday.
Tourist board VisitEngland said around 11million people in the UK are planning an overnight Easter trip, generating an estimated £3.2billion boost to the economy.
The RAC and transport analysis company Inrix commissioned a survey which suggested 2.6million leisure journeys by car will be made on Good Friday.
Some 2.3million getaway trips are planned for each of Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday, with 2.0million set to take place on each of Thursday and Easter Monday.
A further 3.3million Easter leisure journeys have been planned by drivers who are undecided exactly what day they will travel, leading to a total of around 14.5million getaway trips between Thursday and Easter Monday.

Inrix predicted that the worst congestion on Thursday will be between 2pm and 7pm as people on leisure journeys compete for road space with regular commuters.
The busiest route is expected to be the western section of the M25 between the M23 for Gatwick and the M1 for Hertfordshire.
Journeys on this stretch from 4pm are expected to take over two hours, which is more than twice as long as usual.
On Good Friday, the lengthiest delays are expected to be between 11am and 3pm, meaning drivers are advised to set off as early as possible in the morning or wait until later in the afternoon.
Two popular routes for holidaymakers - the M5 southbound between Bristol and Taunton, and the M3 between the M25 and the south coast - are likely to be congested, with estimated journey times more than double what they normally are.
RAC Breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson said: 'With Easter falling earlier than usual at the start of the school holidays, it could be carmageddon for holidaymakers.
'Anyone who can delay leaving on Thursday until much later in the evening or set off as early as possible on Good Friday is likely to have a better journey than those who travel during the peak periods of the day.
'Lengthy queues can be expected along routes to the usual hotspots like the West Country, the Lake District and the south coast, especially during the middle of the day when most people make trips.'
READ MORE Lights, camera… infraction! New high-tech-traps target unwary motorists
Inrix transportation analyst Bob Pishue said: 'Although travel times will peak on Thursday and Friday afternoons, drivers should be prepared for longer journeys than normal throughout the entire weekend.
'To avoid the longest delays, we advise adjusting departure times so you're not travelling in peak commuter hours.'
Meanwhile the AA said Easter Saturday is expected to be busiest day of the holiday period, with at least 18.5million taking to the roads.
The organisation added that it expected there to be 5.2million bank holiday journeys to visit friends or family, while conditions could be unpredictable as the unsettled weather continues.
The AA advised drivers to carry out 'a few simple checks' on their car before embarking on Easter journeys.
Chris Wood, AA patrol of the year, said: 'Easter is the first opportunity many people have to go and see their family and we're expecting the roads to be busy.

'Before setting off on a long journey it's important to check your car. Take 10 minutes to check your oil, coolant and windscreen wash levels.'
Network Rail is urging train passengers to check their journey details before they travel as some major routes will be closed due to engineering work.
The West Coast Main Line between London Euston and Milton Keynes, used by Avanti West Coast trains to and from Scotland, will be shut for four days from Good Friday.
Network Rail said it was laying new track near Kensal Green tunnel in North West London and replacing a busy junction just south of Milton Keynes.
Buses will run from Potters Bar to Watford Junction and Milton Keynes to London.
There will also be disruption to ScotRail services because of work to renew tracks and points over a major junction between Glasgow Central and Cambuslang and Polmadie Depot.
And in West Yorkshire, work will continue on the TransPennine Route Upgrade, with new tracks being laid around Huddersfield. This will mean changes to trains on routes such as Sheffield to Leeds and all trains to Huddersfield itself.

Greater Anglia warned of disruption across its routes because of contstruction work for the new Beaulieu Park station in Chelmsford, as well as track maintenance work.
Train services between London and many East Anglia locations, including Norwich, Ipswich and Colchester, will be replaced by buses for part of the journey.
And in London, the Elizabeth line will be closed due to engineering work through the centre of the capital, between London Paddington and Stratford and Abbey Wood.
Network Rail's network strategy director Laurence Bowman said: 'We know how important Easter is for families and friends to catch up, and we try to keep as much of the network open as possible.
'There's never a good time to do the work we need to do but the four days of the bank holiday, when fewer people are travelling, give us the opportunity to do major work we couldn't do in normal weekend.
'We've got 493 different pieces of work taking place this Easter, most happening overnight, including laying over 8,000 metres of new rail and putting down over 40,000 tonnes of new ballast to support the tracks.'
VisitEngland chief executive Patricia Yates said: 'Tourism businesses and destinations will be looking to the critical Easter weekend for much-needed cash flow after the lean winter months so it's really encouraging to see so many of us are planning a holiday at home.
'We also know from our latest research that the cost of living remains a concern and while people are still keen to take a break, many are booking late, taking shorter breaks, wanting to save on accommodation, activities and eating out, highlighting the ongoing challenges for industry.'
The RAC and Inrix survey of 2,136 UK adults was conducted by research company Find Out Now last week.
Easter Sunday also sees the UK move to British Summer Time (BST) where clocks go forward by one hour.

Life’s been mostly smooth sailing for Monica Brzoska and her husband, Jorell Conley.
Since selling all their worldly possessions, ditching the daily 9-to-5 grind and becoming full-time cruisers, the toughest decision the seafaring sweeties have had to face each day is whether to luxuriate around an oceanliner’s pools or its spas.
“All my meals are cooked by chefs, and staff change my bedding,” bragged Brzoska, 32, an ex-teacher from Memphis, Tennessee, to The Sun . “I haven’t stepped into a kitchen or used a washing machine for a year.”
“I’m not a millionaire,” she added. “I just live full-time on cruise ships .”
Brzoska did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
However, while floating to exotic sandy locations as staffers supply her every need seems like a dream, she admits that life on the water can sometimes be a drip.
“There are challenges, of course,” conceded the blond. “We miss our families but know we can fly home if there’s an emergency.”
In fact, a family crisis inspired the voyaging lovers to set permanent sail two years ago.
“I was desperate to see the world,” said Brzoska. “When my dad Andrzej, now 68, needed a liver transplant in August 2022, my mom Lucyna, 60, said to me: ‘Don’t wait for retirement to follow your dreams. Do it now.’”
With her parents’ blessing, the holiday-making millennials — who met during a teaching gig in July 2015 and tied the knot in July 2020 — said “bye-bye” to the rat race and “aye-aye” to luxury boating.
“We already had a week-long Caribbean cruise booked for March 2023,” said Brzoska. “Instead of coming back, why not keep booking consecutive cruises for as long as we could afford to?”
The wave riders carefully calculated the costs prior to taking the plunge. They’ve ultimately managed to make their ocean motion work for less than $10,000 a year.
“Accommodations, food and entertainment would be included — we’d only need spending money,” said Brzoska.
She and Conley, 36, had previously taken a series of week-long Carnival cruises to hotspots such as Mexico, Belize, Grand Cayman and Costa Rica. The twosome’s frequent floating awards them massive discounts on future trips.
“We’d earned access to some amazing offers,” Brzoska gushed. “If we chose the cheapest cabins, our savings from the pandemic would allow us to book eight months of cruising for $9,989.19 — some trips paid for in full, others with deposits.”
To keep their incoming cash flow steady, the out-and-about honeys rent out their three-bedroom house in Memphis.
Brzoska says leaving life on land has been a “freeing” experience.
“Before, there had always been lesson plans, cooking and cleaning,” she said. “But all of that [is] gone.”
Rather than being preoccupied with work and chores, Brzoska now spends her days enjoying craft activities, playing trivia quiz games and busting a gut at comedy shows offered on the boat.
Her hubby, too, finds happiness watching television and chatting up fellow passengers at the bar.
Taking their marriage to the high seas has made holy matrimony a splash.
“Without the daily stresses of life, we rarely argued,” Brzoska said, “but always told each other if we needed space or more time together.”
The nonstop tourists have even scheduled a weekly date night, during which they don their best duds to dine at one of the fancier onboard restaurants.
Plus, it’s kinda hard to quarrel while sightseeing in some of the most fabulous corners of the world.
Since setting adrift, the adventurous darlings have visited dozens of countries, including Fiji, Japan and Greece. In the last year, they’ve been on 36 consecutive cruises — often disembarking from one watercraft to jump on another at the same port.
And they’re far from the only jet-setters to make life on-the-go a part of their love story.
Couple Marcel Popp, 33, and Vendula Zakova, 31, recently quit their jobs to explore the globe together just two days after meeting on vacation in Vietnam.
And New Yorkers Matt Robertson and Khani Le threw caution to the wind on their third date, taking an impromptu excursion to Costa Rica — only to be stuck on the island for nearly four months during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It was a crazy, surreal experience,” Robertson told The Post.
Brzoska agrees, crediting her new world on water with brightening things up.
“In our old life, we’d have moments we called ‘glimmers,’ when everything seemed magical,” she said. “Now I feel like my whole life is a glimmer — it really is a dream come true.”

Light fantastique: Paris through the eyes of the impressionists
From Monet to Degas, the luminosity of Paris has inspired countless artists. As the city celebrates 150 years of impressionism it’s still shining bright
P aris is called the City of Light, possibly because of its early adoption of gas street lighting. But that would not explain why, as I approach Gare du Nord on Eurostar during daytime, I experience a soft dazzle, similar to when I see a pebbly beach. This is not a meteorological phenomenon; the weather in Paris is only slightly better than London’s. Instead, the luminosity owes something to the buff or light-grey limestone of the older buildings (including the Sacré Coeur, rearing like a great ghost to my right), its pallor perpetuated by the whitewashed exteriors of newer buildings.
The light in Paris was a concern of the impressionists, the movement whose 150th anniversary is marked by the Musée d’Orsay’s forthcoming Inventing Impressionism exhibition. On 15 April 1874, a group of 31 artists, including Monet, Pissarro, Degas and Renoir, “hungry for independence” (as the Musée d’Orsay website has it) from the strictures of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, staged their own exhibition. Inventing Impressionism will feature works from that show and others of the time: “Painted scenes of modern life, and landscapes sketched in the open air, in pale hues and with the lightest of touches.”
The new movement got its name from Claude Monet’s Impression, Sunrise , a blurry view of Le Havre in Normandy, where he grew up. But, as Stephen Clarke writes in his book Paris Revealed, “Paris is the spiritual home of impressionism”, and their work is often discussed in relation to the remaking of the city by Baron Haussmann, commissioned by Napoleon III to “ aérer, unifier et embellir ” (open up, connect, beautify).
Historian Andrew Hussey writes in his book Paris: The Secret History of “an urban infrastructure that had barely been touched or improved since the late-medieval period … There were no straight roads through Paris, whose centre, Île de la Cité, was a dark and muddy labyrinth.” Haussmann created a network of boulevards, light by virtue of their width, the limestone he employed, zinc or slate roofs that shine when wet, and the pale trunks of the plane trees.
The Grands Boulevards of the Right Bank were especially important to the impressionists. The 1874 exhibition was held on Boulevard des Capucines, in an upper storey at number 35. Monet painted the view from his rooms there, depicting a boulevard full of light (enhanced by reflections off snow) and full of people. The Grands Boulevards were pleasure zones, the haunt of flâneurs , and lined with restaurants, theatres and, later, cinemas. (The Grand Rex , on Boulevard Poissonnière, makes its own contribution to the City of Light with its neon blaze.)
Another place important to the impressionists was Batignolles, a northern district annexed to Paris on Haussmann’s suggestion. Monet made numerous studies of nearby Saint-Lazare station, following the injunction of Émile Zola to find the “poetry” in stations. In Zola’s novel La Bête Humaine, Saint-Lazare is “immense, dreary, drenched with rain, pierced here and there with a blood-red light, vaguely peopled by opaque masses … ”
It was this opacity that the painter sought. Obscure and broke at this point, he marched up to the station master, introducing himself as “the painter, Claude Monet” with such authority that his request that all the engine drivers generate as much steam as possible was granted.
In Édouard Manet’s The Railway , a young woman and a girl are depicted on a bridge overlooking Saint-Lazare. A gout of steam rises behind them, looking like something that shouldn’t be there, a great smudge. It’s still interesting to watch the trains from that bridge (I speak as a rail enthusiast) but they are now electric, and the sky above them seems empty.
Batignolles is off the tourist trail and has been called Paris’s hippest neighbourhood, but there’s something sleepy about it, a sense of having wide streets to oneself. That’s the mood of Gustave Caillebotte’s painting Peintres en bâtiment . Workmen paint a shop front, and the long, empty street stretches away, with one of those white Parisian skies overhead. It has been suggested that the workmen represent painters of the more artistic sort, coming to terms with the scale of the new Paris.
But let’s circle back to that original heart of darkness: the Île de la Cité. Haussmann made it a zone of grand buildings, with a luminosity of their own – the gilding on the gates of the Palais de Justice can dazzle on a sunny day. In the novels of Georges Simenon, Inspector Maigret works at 36 Quai des Orfèvres on the island: it’s a whitish, castle-like building that housed the detectives of the Paris police until they recently relocated. The detective is a connoisseur of the changing light over the river, and in Maigret’s Pickpocket , he observes “a haze hanging over the Seine, less dense than mist, made up of thousands of tiny, brilliant, living particles peculiar to Paris”.
after newsletter promotion
Not all the luminosity is down to Haussmann. Anyone who walks through the gilded gateway between the Tuileries Garden (rendered ambiguous, in soft green and pinkish tones, by Monet in Les Tuileries) and Place de la Concorde is in a pre-Haussmann world. In Henry James’s novel The Tragic Muse, artist Nick Dormer looks over “the great square, the opposite bank of the Seine, the steep blue roofs of the quay, the bright immensity of Paris”.
Place de la Concorde is being embellished for this summer’s Olympic Games, and I recently saw a lorry there, loaded with typically ornate lamp-posts. In any other town, this would have looked like a delivery of theatrical props, but in Paris it was just a job lot of streetlights.
They would be too big for the parts of the city Haussmann didn’t touch, like the Marais or Montmartre. There, lamps tend to be fitted to the walls of the narrow streets which, for some, are the most characterful in Paris. I love the little bars of Montmartre especially. But the care with which they are lit – often with fairy lights around windows or mirrors – may reflect a lesson learned from Haussmann, in whose favour it could also be said that without him we might not have had the impressionists.
Impressionist exhibitions
Normandy The Normandy impressionist festival , which started this week and runs until 22 September, examines connections between the region and the art movement. Events include an exhibition at the Rouen Fine Arts Museum contrasting works by James McNeill Whistler with those of his impressionist contemporaries; Robert Wilson’s light projections on the facade of Rouen Cathedral (24 May-end September); and Impressionism and the Sea at the Musée des Impressionnismes in Giverny (29 March-30 June).
Monet and London: Views of the Thames at the Courtauld in Somerset House (27 September–19 January 2025) exhibits some of the artist’s prolific output from his time in the capital between 1899 and 1901. The Houses of Parliament, Charing Cross Bridge, Waterloo Bridge and the Houses of Parliament are depicted “full of evocative atmosphere, mysterious light and radiant colour”. Although Monet wanted to show these paintings in London, plans fell through and this is the first time they have been the subject of a UK exhibition.
Andrew Martin is the author of the Reading on Trains Substack. Train travel to Paris was provided by Eurostar . Inventing Impressionism is at the Musée d’Orsay from 26 March–14 July

Is Publix closed on Easter? Where to shop this Sunday
If you're planning to go grocery shopping or pick out a new outfit on the morning of Easter Sunday , you might be out of luck.
Those who put off their holiday shopping until the last minute might need to go a tad bit earlier in case their favorite retailers are closed this upcoming Sunday .

When is Easter 2024?
Easter Sunday in 2024 for churches on the Western calendar is on March 31.

What is Easter? How is the date of Easter determined?
Easter marks the celebration of Jesus Christ's resurrection, serving as the culmination of Holy Week, which comprises several days, each carrying significance. These days include Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
As for the timing of the holiday, it varies from year to year. Easter falls on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is the first full moon occurring on or after March 21.
Why is Easter on a different date? We look to the moon for answers
In the year 325, the Council of Nicaea ordered a confusing situation of varying dates in different places by decreeing Easter should be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. If that full moon falls on a Sunday, then Easter is the following Sunday.
The council's decree eventually became the standard.
Is Easter a federal holiday in the United States?
There are 12 federal holidays in the United States in 2024. Easter, which is on a Sunday, is not a holiday on the list and is not typically observed as a holiday on a work day.

Interstate construction halted for easter holiday travel.
- Monday, March 25, 2024
The Tennessee Department of Transportation will suspend all interstate construction work on Easter weekend in anticipation of increased holiday travel.
TDOT crews and contractors will stop all road construction work that requires lane closures beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. through Monday, April 1, at 6 a.m. This will provide maximum roadway capacity to motorists expected to travel across the state this upcoming holiday weekend.
Motorists will still encounter some long-term lane closures on construction projects that will remain in place. While lane closure activity will be stopped, some workers may be on-site in construction zones, and reduced speed limits will still be in effect. Motorists are urged to adhere to all posted speed limits, especially in work zones, for their safety. Slower speeds are necessary for work zones due to the temporary layout of the roadway and will be enforced.
Only three months into the year, there have already been 27 incidents involving drivers crashing into TDOT vehicles and equipment.

Easter travel warning as '14 million' holiday drives and major rail works planned
The RAC warns that journeys on popular routes could take twice as long as usual, while Network Rail carries out engineering works between London Euston and Milton Keynes.
By Dylan Donnelly, news reporter
Monday 25 March 2024 04:11, UK
Britons have been warned of long delays on their Easter getaways, with more than 14 million journeys expected on the roads and engineering works set to disrupt rail services.
The RAC warned that journeys on popular routes could take twice as long as usual, as the bank holiday weekend leads into a two-week holiday for many schools.
Trains are also set to be stopped as Network Rail carries out engineering works on the West Coast Main Line - which stretches from the capital to Scotland - between London Euston and Milton Keynes.
That stretch of rail will be closed between Good Friday and Easter Monday, with disruption also expected in Glasgow and Huddersfield.
Laurence Bowman, Network Rail's network strategy director, said there is "never a good time to do the work we need to do", but explained that a lower number of commuters over the bank holiday weekend gives them "the opportunity to do major work we couldn't do in a normal weekend".
"We've got 493 different pieces of work taking place this Easter, most happening overnight," he added, "including laying over 8,000 metres of new rail and putting down over 40,000 tonnes of new ballast to support the tracks."
RAC spokesperson Alice Simpson also warned it "could be carmageddon" over Easter and said heavy traffic and "lengthy queues can be expected along routes to the usual hotspots".

Inrix transportation analyst Bob Pishue also said that "drivers should be prepared for longer journeys than normal throughout the entire weekend".
Worst day for driving
A survey commissioned by the RAC and Inrix found that 2.6 million journeys are planned on Good Friday, with around 2.3 million trips expected for both Easter Saturday and Sunday.
Another two million trips are expected on Thursday and Easter Monday, and a further 3.3 million journeys are due with no clear starting date, making for a total of around 14.5 million journeys.

Inrix predicted that the worst of the traffic is expected between 2pm and 7pm on Thursday, when holiday journeys are set to mix with regular commutes.
It added that the busiest route is set to be the western section of the M25 between the M23 for Gatwick and the M1 for Hertfordshire where journeys from 4pm are tipped to take more than two hours, more than twice as long as usual.
The M5 southbound between Bristol and Taunton, and the M3 between the M25 and the south coast are also likely to be congested, according to Inrix, with estimated journey times more than double what they normally are.
The survey, from research company Find Out Now, polled 2,136 UK adults.
