“I have thought about providing our students with a Washington, DC tour for many years. However, I was very concerned with the time commitment and support it would take to make a trip happen. From our first phone call, to your help with my Parent Night, handling all parent payments and finally running our tour I could not be happier. The NationsClassroom staff made my role so much simpler than I could have imagined. As a result, we had 160 students on our first tour that had a great experience. I am sure that the tour will now be a yearly highlight for our school. Thank you.”

“Thank you for an amazing trip to Washington, DC. My friends and I had a great time. My favorite parts were the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery and going up in the Washington Monument. This was my best trip by far and I have been on a lot.”

“I have planned my Washington, DC and New York City tour with just about every student tour company that there is. Hands down, NationsClassroom is the best. Your staff really cares about doing things great and providing my kids with a great trip, year, after year. Every part of the process is done right-your company simply gets it.”

“I just returned from an amazing experience with my daughter on her Washington, DC and East Coast school trip with NationsClassroom. I have to say I am very pleased and frankly quite surprised. Companies in other fields can take note of your attention to detail, dedication to providing great service and the passion of your employees. Our tour was very well thought out, the meals were better than I expected and the hotels were very nice. Our check in and check out were both very smooth. Most importantly, your Tour Guide was phenomenal. I don’t know how he was able to relate to everyone so well. He had the students really get involved in what they were seeing and didn’t just talk non-stop. Thank you for a wonderful lifelong memory.”

School trips to Washington D.C. offer students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the political history of the USA!

The capital city of the USA , Washington D.C. is the ideal destination for any group keen to learn more about the US constitution, federalism, and the roles of key institutions within the US government. It’s also a great choice of destination for groups studying the civil rights movement.

Read more  about our school trips to Washington DC

Why visit washington d.c., the capital of the usa.

Washington D.C. was purposefully created to be the federal capital of the United States of America in the late 18 th century. It was named after President George Washington, who had selected the exact location on which it was to be built. Congress held its first session in the newly created city in 1800. It has remained the seat of power in the US ever since.

America’s capital is a city of monuments and museums and is, of course, the perfect choice for a school trip focused on US politics.

From its celebrated symbols of patriotism to its undiscovered neighbourhoods, the sights and sounds of the city inspire millions of visitors every year, and none more so than the impressive White House itself.

On your school trip to Washington D.C., your students will have the opportunity to explore Capitol Hill, including a guided tour of the Capitol Building. This is where the United States Congress meets and so is the seat of the legislative branch of the federal government.

Your students will also have the opportunity to learn more about one of the greatest US presidents, Abraham Lincoln, with visits to the Lincoln Memorial and Ford’s Theatre were he was assassinated in 1865.

Discover American history and culture

For those interested in American history, it will be no surprise that there are plenty of museums to visit in Washington D.C., including the world-famous Smithsonian Institution, which consists of 19 museums, 9 research centres and the National Zoo.

Washington D.C. is also an important centre for the arts and the city is home to many important galleries, art museums, theatres and concert halls. If you are looking for a destination that will give your students a good introduction to American culture, a Washington D.C. school trip. would be very hard to beat.

Beyond Washington D.C.’s more familiar vistas, like the Capitol Building and the White House, the city unwinds into a lively urban centre that your students will love to explore.

Arlington Cemetery

Arlington Cemetery

A National Shrine and living History of Freedom, where dignity and honour rest in solemn repose.' No-one who visits the cemetery can remain unmoved by the rows upon rows of graves that commemorate the lives of the people who died to serve the American people.

The US Capitol Building

Capitol Building

The most impressive of the US government sites is undoubtedly the Capitol Building, which houses the meeting chambers for the House of Senate, the House of Representatives and the US Supreme Court. Together these three political wings are more powerful than the president and his administrative power at the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The building is enormous, covering over 6.7 ha, with 540 rooms, 648 windows (108 of which are in its crowning dome) and 850 doorways. It is partially open to the public as an art gallery but reservations must be made in advance.

The Jefferson Memorial

Jefferson Memorial

Thomas Jefferson's speeches helped to shape the America we know today and so the Jefferson Memorial exists to remind us of the man and his words. Thomas Jefferson was considered so great that a Greek-style acropolis was built in his name and much of what he said and wrote is inscribed on the memorial walls.

National WWII Memorial

National WWII Memorial

The World War II Memorial is in honour of the 16 million troops who served in the war, the 400,000 of those who died and all those who supported the war effort during the devastating World War II. It symbolises the defining event of the 20th century and is a monument to the spirit, sacrifice and commitment of the American people. Furthermore, it the only 20th-century event immortalised on the National Mall's central axis.

The Supreme Court

Supreme Court

Despite the importance of the Supreme Court in the American political system, it was not granted its own building until 1935. A visit to the Supreme Court, the White House and Capitol Hill on the Washington School Tour gives your students a great overview of the American political institutions and where they carry out their important work.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation

The Federal Bureau of Investigation

More widely known as the FBI, a tour around one of the world's most famous institutions is bound to excite your students. As you would expect, the FBI tour is not always open to the public so please check in advance if you hope to do this as part of your Washington school tour.

Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial celebrates the life of the USA's most famous president, Abraham Lincoln, who won the Civil War of Independence and abolished slavery throughout the United States. Lincoln's story is one that mirrors the American philosophy entirely; despite coming from a poor family on the Western frontier, he was self-educated and managed to become the country's most powerful and revered man. In the style of one of the most prosperous civilisations, the Lincoln Memorial was built to reflect Greek architecture, with Doric columns and a clean white marble finish. Ever since its completion in 1920, the Lincoln Memorial has been an important site for many political speeches including Martin Luther King's, 'I Have a Dream.'

National Museum of American History

The National Museum of American History

The National Museum of American History: Kenneth E. Behring Centre collects, preserves, and displays the heritage of the United States in the areas of social, political, cultural, scientific, and military history. The museum is part of the Smithsonian Institution and located on the National Mall at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue NW in Washington D.C.

The Pentagon

The Pentagon

The Pentagon is the headquarters of the US Department of Defense and is one of the largest office buildings in the world. The National Capitol would fit into any one of the 5 wedge-shaped portions that make up the whole building. Tours must be booked in advance and are conducted by military personnel. There are numerous displays that highlight and depict significant moments in US military history.

The Washington Monument

The Washington Monument

The Washington Monument commemorates the life of George Washington, the first president of the United States, who triumphantly declared the country independent after the American Revolution. The monument was finished many years after his death in 1884. The Egyptian-style obelisk stretches 169.294 metres into the sky and is the tallest stone structure in the world. In 2011 the monument was damaged by Hurricane Irene and the Virginia earthquake so had to be closed to the public but it was reopened in spring 2014 and is as popular as ever. Visitors can go to the top and enjoy the fabulous views of Washington through the pyramidion windows.

The White House

The White House

The White House is world-famous as the official residence of the President of the USA and has been ever since President John Adams was inaugurated in 1797 as the second President of the USA. It was built between the years of 1792 and 1800 and these days the White House complex boasts 132 rooms and 35 bathrooms! The East Wing is reserved for the First Lady and her staff, whilst the West Wing is used by the President and the Executive team. The First Family lives on the second and third floors, which allows them some time away from the spotlight.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, featuring the names of over 58,000 Americans who died in military service for their country during the Vietnam War, is a poignant reminder of the tragedy of battle. A black wall, designed by a Yale University student, Maya Ying Lin, is inscribed with the names of the casualties. The vast wall of glossy black granite is striking in terms of its size and beauty, as well as in the way that it fits in so seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The reflective material that the wall is made with, reminds visitors of how the people who died were just like us.

School Trips in DC: What Visitors Need to Know

Participating in one of the multi-day school trips in DC is a right-of passage for many 8th graders across the U.S. If you are not visiting with one of these groups but coming to DC between mid-March and mid-June, these are a few things you need to know.

Washington DC Field Trip Season, Explained

What is school field trip season?

School trips in DC are a huge part of the local tourism industry. Most schools send eighth grade class trips. This is why you will also occasionally hear referred to as “eighth grade field trip season”. Eighth grade is usually the class that gets to come to DC because it’s a final reward before the kids head off to high school.

Trip Hacks DC offers tours specifically designed for school groups . We have led tours with students in fifth grade all the way up to 12th grade. Our tours are best for small schools who don’t pay for an all-inclusive package. For large schools, these services might make more sense.

When is school field trip season?

School group trips in DC typically happen at one of two times during the year. The big one is in the spring, roughly from mid-March through mid-June. There is also a secondary field trip season in the fall roughly from early October through Thanksgiving.

If you’re trying to avoid field trip season the months you want to consider for your trip are: December, January, and February in the winter, and July, August, and September in the summer. Most schools choose to come in the spring because it’s an end-of-the-school-year reward. Plus, the students get to spend all school year learning about social studies and history and then they get to come to DC and see things up close.

Fall field trip season is much less busy since most schools don’t want to do the trip at the beginning of the school year.

How will field trip season impact your trip?

The most important thing to know is that school groups travel together in large packs. So, if you are visiting the memorials, there might be four groups of 50 students or more at once. This can really change the feel of some of the sites, particularly smaller memorials like the Vietnam and Korean War memorials.

School groups are only in DC for a limited amount of time. They need to maximize that time as best as possible. That means that during the day they’re going to be at the sites that are only open from 10 to 5. This includes the museums and the other indoor sites. Then, after dinner, they are going to head out and tour the monuments and memorials. This is because there are not a lot of evening activities you can do with big groups of teenagers.

The bottom line is that if you’re visiting during spring field trip season you’re going to be sharing those monuments and sites with a lot of other people.

Where do field trip groups eat?

As far as restaurants go, school trips groups in DC tend to stick to a limited number of places. For lunch they go to food courts. The food courts at Union Station, L’Enfant Plaza, the Reagan Building, and Pentagon City Mall are all popular choices. Food courts are ideal for school groups because they’re cheap and they give the students a lot of different choices. For dinner, they go to the inexpensive restaurants that can accommodate groups. This includes places such as the Hard Rock Cafe, Buca di Beppo, Carmine’s, and similar chain places.

Where do school groups stay?

School groups usually stay at suburban hotels because they travel on charter buses. Thus they do not need to be near Metro. Suburban hotels usually offer group rates to schools. Although, you will occasionally see school groups staying downtown, especially if they’re a small group who doesn’t have a charter bus. So if you plan to stay at a downtown hotel and eat at mostly local restaurants, you are probably not going to bump into too many of these groups at those places.

Close Up made me realize how SIGNIFICANT my thoughts and views are…

Although everyone will not always agree, everyone has a voice and needs to be heard.

Close Up brought me CLOSER to politics…

the entire notion no longer seemed obscure. I became very involved in politics on the local and national level.

As a government teacher, it’s nice to have more resources …

for teaching media literacy and having students critically think about the information they receive.

I plan to introduce Close Up’s professional development to the teachers I work with…

and use this as a part of my school’s requirement that students take action on issues of local, national, and international importance.

Plan a School Trip to DC

school trips to washington dc

Planning a school trip to Washington, DC can be difficult, especially if you haven't been before - that's where we come in.

Our guides spend almost as much time in the year leading school trips in DC as they do leading our popular "name-your-own-price" walking tours.

Let us help you plan your school trip to DC.

WASHINGTON DC SCHOOL PLANNING TIPS:

  • Hire tour guides for the most important sites - National Mall, Arlington Cemetery, Capitol Hill.

There are some places that are just better with a local guide. Some of our most popular tours for school groups include:

Memorials & Monuments on the National Mall  - Any combination, either on foot or stepping on your bus to give narration.  We can even help you arrange a coach/minibus/van. Let us know what you want to focus on, and we can work out the details with you.

Arlington National Cemetery  - This tour covers history of the cemetery, the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns, and the final resting place of the Kennedy brothers, including, of course, President Kennedy. This tour and topics covered can be customized to your group.

Capitol Hill  - We can guide you around the outside of the Capitol Hill complex, including a tour inside the Library of Congress and outside of the Supreme Court.

We can also help you figure out the logistics to tour inside the Capitol, either through the Capitol Visitors' Center or through your own Congressional offices.

Lincoln Assassination - A thrilling story-telling experience that starts at the White House and ends outside Ford's Theatre. We offer this tour at any time of day, but it is a very popular evening activity.

Ghosts of Georgetown - Our most popular evening tour for school groups looking for something fun but still educational! This tour is more about the scary and spooky history of DC's oldest and most charming neighborhood, deeply intertwined with this history of our nation.

  • Don't schedule too many things in a day.

We've been doing this for a long time now and can tell you: you will not see everything DC has to offer in a single trip, so don't even try! Instead, focus on the sites that are most important to both you and your students.

Your excitement for these places will be infectious for your students, so spend time at the places you enjoy and that make sense in terms of your students' knowledge base and interests. But know that you will inevitably run late.

There will be security lines and traffic can be a nightmare at certain times of the day.  Build in downtime and some travel-time padding and don't feel bad about not seeing everything. Things take longer than you expect in DC, especially with large groups of students!

  • Book tickets (even free ones) as soon as possible!

Some museums and attractions require tickets and they get booked out early and fast.

If you aren't able to get tickets, or just don't want to bother trying, here are some alternatives:

  • Our Lincoln Assassination tour is a great alternative or compliment to going inside Ford's Theatre
  • While we cannot get you in the Capitol building without tickets, our Capitol Hill tour offers an informative and fun exploration of the American political system and sometimes, though no guarantees, we are able to get you on a Capitol tour if time allows.
  • There are no alternatives to the one of kind Holocaust Memorial Museum or National Museum of African American History and Culture, but we do have specialty theme tours to explore Black history of Washington DC, or women's history, or even a Civil Rights themed tour.
  • Try to come in the off-season.

March through early June are the most popular times for school groups, especially the end of May and first week of June. October is becoming another popular option in the last few years, largely because late spring can be so crowded.

Granted, these times are popular because that is the best time in the school year to come, but if you can come at other times of the year, you'll be rewarded with a lot less crowding.

If you can't avoid coming at the same time as everyone else, here a few things to keep in mind:

  • Arlington Cemetery opens at 8am and will be very crowded until 1030am - but we're pros at guiding groups through the crowds.
  • George Washington's Mount Vernon opens early just for school groups.
  • Lincoln Memorial is very crowded after dinner - but our guides know how to plan a memorials tour to deal with this!

SAMPLE ITINERARIES

We have led more than 10,000 students on school tours through DC over the past decade. Each group is different and each day is different in DC, so there are a lot of things to take into consideration when planning a school trip to our nation's capital city.

Here are some ideas of activities to pick and choose to plan your day:

Early Morning DC Activities for School Groups:

Most museums don't open until 10am, so if you want to get a head start on the day here are things that are open earlier.

  • Arlington National Cemetery
  • George Washington's Mount Vernon (reservations required)
  • Capitol Building Tours (tickets required)
  • Library of Congress
  • White House Visitor Center

Other Popular Attractions:

Here are a list of popular things to do on a DC field trip, with notes on what requires advanced reservations & tickets.

  • Holocaust Memorial Museum (tickets required)
  • White House  (reservations *and* a background security check required)
  • Pentagon (reservations *and* a background security check required)
  • Smithsonian Museums (some tickets required)
  • Washington National Cathedral  (reservations required for tour)
  • Ford's Theatre  (tickets required)

Evening Things To Do with School Groups in DC:

Evenings can be tough for school groups, as most museums close at 5pm, as do the federal buildings. Things to do at night with school groups can be tours or a fun night out. Popular suggestions are:

  • Nighttime tours
  • National Portrait Gallery is always open until 7pm, but during summer months some other Smithsonian museums will have extended hours
  • International Spy Museum
  • Bowling (Pinstripes in Georgetown is a popular choice!)
  • Sporting Event (The 2019 World Champion Washington Nationals Baseball team is always a popular choice, but DC also has hockey, basketball, and soccer to check out)
  • Dinner/sightseeing Cruises on the Potomac

Evening: Ghost Tour (dinner at Pinstripes in Georgetown)

Morning: Old Town Alexandria Walking Tour (Lunch at Fish Market)

Afternoon: George Washington's Mount Vernon

Q. What is the minimum / maximum group size you tour with?

Minimum is 1. Maximum depends on the tour, but most tours can be arranged with one guide per coach (Ghosts of Georgetown tours are limited to smaller groups due to the narrow streets and residential nature of the neighborhood).

We can run tours with multiple guides at the same time if you have a large group to break up. Though we recommend staggering or letting each bus do a different itinerary to avoid overcrowding.

Q. Can you get on our bus?

Yes! As long as you have a seat for the guide (this is mandated by law), we can hop on your bus to use it for the tour. Our guides know how to get around the city, where coaches can load and unload, and the best way to route stops to help avoid traffic.

Q. Can you arrange tickets for us?

Depends. We DO NOT arrange tickets to any attractions in the Spring (March- early June). At other times of the year, we can assist with Capitol building tickets if you're booking our Capitol Hill tour and Ford's Theatre tickets if you're booking our Lincoln Assassination tour.

We DO NOT arrange tickets to any other attractions and we DO NOT arrange tickets if you aren't booking the corresponding tour.

Q. Can you arrange meals for us?

We do not arrange meals, but you can read our Popular Restaurants section  below

Q. Can you arrange accommodation for us?

Q. Can you arrange transportation for us?

We can assist with booking a coach for touring purposes only. We cannot arrange transportation for times you are not booking a tour, but if you do book a tour with us, we can always offer advice for other times.

Q: How do I book a school tour in DC?

Send us an email ! Let us know when you're visiting, how many people, and what tours you're interested and what times work best for you and we'll offer you availability and rates.

Rates vary based on group size (large or small, we do not charge per person), and what tour(s) you're interested in.

Founded in 1791 to serve as the nation’s new capital, Washington DC is steeped in American history. Nowhere else in the United States has such an incredible concentration of historical monuments and high-profile government buildings. As your students tour the city, they will take in the immensity of our country’s national treasures. School trips to Washington DC are thoroughly educational and invigorating for young minds.

Washington DC tours feature excursions to the White House, the Capitol Buiding, the Smithsonian and Arlington National Cemetery. Most visitors spend several days in the Distric of Columbia, as the city offers countless incredible sights and excursions for students. Home School Trips to Washington DC – A Helpful Guide on the Best Learning Opportunities

A couple of years ago, our family joined our co-op group and embarked on a memorable vacation to our nation’s capital. The endless learning opportunities were almost overwhelming, so we put together this list of the best learning opportunities while visiting Washington D.C.

So, what are the best learning opportunities while on a school trip to Washington DC? The best Learning opportunities while on School trips to Washington DC are found in attractions catering to a combination of auditory, visual and hands-on learning styles including:

  • The Smithsonian museums (obvious)
  • White House
  • Mount Vernon Estate
  • Arlington National Cemetery

The Capital Building

If you homeschool your kids, identifying teaching moments is part of life. However,  few destinations can compete with the abundance of topics and subjects a homeschooling parent can leverage while visiting our nation’s capital.

Though everyone has their own preferences, here are our top suggestions and tips on how to make your Homeschool trip to D.C. an unforgettable experience.

Details on the Best Learning Opportunities on a Trip to D.C.

The smithsonian museums.

The Smithsonian Institution consists of nineteen widely visible museums and galleries and a National Zoological Park, with seventeen of these attractions located in Washington D.C., and eleven of located on the National Mall. The remaining ones are in New York City and Chantilly, Virginia. The best part? They are all free!

National Air and Space Museum (my personal favorite)

My, oh my! As a former Aerospace Engineer, this is by far my favorite Smithsonian museum.

Talk about a kid in a candy store! I mean, where else can you tie in history, engineering, science, flight, technology, leadership, American ingenuity, failure and success, and character-building, all while staring at a tin can (Saturn lunar capsule) with less microprocessing power than an Apple watch?

The National Air and Space Museum opened its doors in 1976 and does an excellent job of displaying the history and science of aviation, spaceflight, planetary science, and terrestrial geology.

With an endless supply of activities in which to participate, you can spend all day soaking up valuable educational material and not realize it’s dinner time.

While there, make sure to explore the 22 exhibition galleries covering the history of:

  • Spaceflight
  • Astronomy, and
  • Planetary science.

Along with historic aircraft and space objects, you’ll also find static displays of engines, instruments, uniforms, models, medals, trophies, artwork, and more!

Learn by doing!  There are plenty of activities for the hands-on learner. You can build and race paper airplane, plan a mission to Mars, or climb inside a Cessna and work the controls. School groups can reserve a variety of Science Demonstrations, Discovery Stations, and Learning Labs.

Teaching a unit on how things fly? The Air and Space Museum has great online resources offering fun assignment ideas, images to show in class and access to kid-friendly flight simulators to solidify the mechanics of flight.

History buff?  Millions of visitors pass through the doors of the National Air and Space Museum on a yearly basis, and most visitors focus on the tangible displays – the actual, physical air and spacecraft that shaped history. However, few if any of our visitors realize that aerospace history homeschooling on the site of the National Air and Space Museum in 1861. At the beginning of the Civil War, aeronaut Thaddeus Lowe wanted to demonstrate to President Lincoln the potential use of balloons in military reconnaissance. With support from Joseph Henry (then secretary of the Smithsonian), in the summer of 1861, Lowe made tethered ascents from the National Mall directly in front of where the Museum now stands. Lowe’s demonstrations led to the development of a balloon corps for the Union Army and the birth of American aerial reconnaissance.

Want to teach a unit on Pioneering Women in Aerospace? The Air and Space Museum provides plenty of content for this great topic. Women have flown since 1908, with each generation breaking down different barriers and gaining access to careers in the military, private and commercial flight, research laboratories, and space. From the first woman to earn her pilot’s license to the programmers responsible for making our trip to the moon a reality, you can learn about the women of the past and look toward what will be achieved in the future.

The White House

Visiting the White House was one of our top three favorite things to do while in D.C. as a homeschooling family.

If you have the patience, persistence and can manage to navigate all the hoops and loops to land a tour, do it! Trust me, it will all be worth it!

The White House is not only a beautiful building, but it’s also a symbolic cornerstone of our democracy!

Most visitors tour the East wing, but a lucky few (special arrangements with their congressman or a representative) get to see the West Wing where the president works.

Regardless of what side you end up touring, every hall and room in the Whitehouse gives a glimpse of American history as no other place or museum can.

If you want to make your D.C. a memorable one, a visit to the Whitehouse is a MUST!

How To Request A White House Tour

White House tours are free, popular, self-guided, and fill on a first-come, first-served basis.

Recognizing they are free and very popular, we encourage everyone to submit their tour request as early as possible as tours fill up quickly and have limited available space.

Also, keep in mind that the White House schedule can change at any moment and tours are subject to cancelation based on current events.

Note: Even though these are self-guided tours, a request to tour the White House must first be submitted through one’s Member of Congress.

Submitting a Request

A request can be submitted up to three months but no less than 21 days in advance.

Our homeschool group was literally notified just days prior to traveling to D.C. which, goes to show that it can take time to get approved, and approval is not guaranteed.

Be patient and stay the course; it will be worth it!

Tour Hours:

  • 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and
  • 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays unless otherwise noted.

If you are a national from another country and wish to visit the White House, please contact your embassy in Washington, DC for assistance in submitting a tour request. It’s not technically a requirement for foreign nationals to request a tour through their embassy, but its a good place to start.

What To Expect On A Tour of The White House

If you can secure a tour slot, you will be given a specific date and time to arrive and be instructed on where to check-in.

  • For security reasons, all guests over 18 years are required to present a valid, government-issued photo ID upon check-in.
  • large handbags
  • bottled water, etc.
  • Smart smartphones and compact cameras with a lens no longer than 3 inches are permitted but, video recording devices and flash photography are prohibited.

Rooms Accessible During a Tour

The self-guided, East Wing tours include access the following rooms:

  • The State Dining Room
  • The China Room; and
  • View of the White House Rose Garden.

Note that Secret Service members are stationed in each room and are available to answer questions about the history and architecture of each room.

White House Visitor Center

The White House Visitor Cente has just been renovated with brand new exhibits and is open daily from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Watch a 30-minute video and learn about many aspects of the White House, including its architecture, furnishings, first families, social events, and relations with the press and world leaders.

Additional White House Information

  • 24-hour Visitors Office Line:  (202) 456-7041
  •  Address – 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC
  • Transportation and Parking – The closest Metro stations to the White House are Federal Triangle, Metro Center and McPherson Square. Parking  is very limited in this area, so public transportation is recommended.

The Mount Vernon Estate

There’s no better way to wrap up a homeschool unit in American History than by visiting the home of America’s first president, George Washington.

school trips Washington dc - Lincoln's Cottage

Just a short drive away from DC, George Washington’s Mount Vernon is one of the most iconic 18th-century homes in America, and a must-see for any homeschooling family.

The beautiful riverside estate of George Washington includes the iconic Mansion, George Washington’s tomb, outbuildings, and a working blacksmith shop.

A little history

  • In 1734, George Washington’s father, Augustine Washington, built a modest one and a half story house where the mansion sits today.
  • In 1754, George Washington began leasing the property, then inherited it outright 1762, after his brother had lived there for years. Over time, the structure was expanded to by raising the roof to make the Mansion two and a half stories high.
  • In 1774, the north and south wings, the cupola and piazza were added to create the structure we see today.

school trips Washington dc - mount ver

A visit to Mount Vernon provides a full sensory experience for visitors who explore the grounds, buildings, and gardens. From the furnishings in rooms and art on the walls to the plants in the gardens and fence-lined walking paths, an onsight learning experience can be achieved through field trips or recreated using online tools paired with complementary primary sources .

With so much to see and do, a visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon is simply a must if you homeschool!

The Arlington National Cemetery

school trips Washington dc - cemetery

This was one of the highlights of our visit to Washington DC. The grounds were gorgeous and the staff super helpful. This is solemn ground and immaculately maintained.

Our group was fortunate enough to visit DC in the Spring during Memorial Day weekend and volunteered in distributing roses to the graves within an assigned section of the cemetery – it was such an honor.

If you visit during the spring, be sure to bring an umbrella or a poncho! The weather turned on us while distributing flowers, but since we were prepared, we participated until we ran out of flowers.

However, in my opinion, the rain added even more solemness to the area which made this activity that much more memorable.

Sign up to Volunteer

Signing up to volunteer is easy. Simply visit the official Memorial Day Flowers website to register. You can sign up as an individual or a group but, make sure to register early as spots are limited and registration does close.

The distribution of flowers at the tomb of our fallen is an awesome way to tie-in homeschool units in American History and war while exercising respect for our fallen heroes.

Whether you’re a student, teacher or homeschooling family, visiting the Capitol is a great way to solidify one’s understanding of the roots of our country’s government through stories and hands-on activities.

To make the most of your homeschool vacation, take advantage of the variety of lessons about Congress and the Capitol that go beyond the traditional Capitol tour. The Capitol Visitor Center offers students and teachers a wide range of resources, such as lesson plans, classroom research projects ideas, and even activity sheets to use on your visit

Student Programs at the Capital

The Capital offers free student programs between October and February each year on selected Wednesday and Thursday Mornings and is a great way to supplement a home education unit in Art, Architecture or the Constitution.

Program 1: The Art and Architecture of the U.S. Capitol

Through this program, students explore the history and culture of America by examining art and architectural elements found in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, the Rotunda, and National Statuary Hall.

Grades:  3 through 6 Number:  20-50 students per program Length:  2 hours Start Time:  9:30 a.m.

Program 2 Capitol Art: H i story, Culture, or Expression?

This program is similar to program 1 but geared more toward students between 7th and 12th grade. Through the arts and humanities, students study the art and architectural features of the U.S. Capitol and participate in a student-centered creative activity.

Grades:  7 through 12 Number:  20-50 students per program Length:  2 hours Start Time:  9:30 a.m.

Program 3: How Does a Bill Become Law?

To supplement your student’s understanding of how a bill becomes law, plan accordingly and register for this program. Students participate in activities that illustrate the process using the Chesapeake Bay and the Clean Water Acts of 1948 and 1972 as legislative examples. As a side bonus, groups receive passes to visit the Galleries of the U.S. Senate or the U.S. House of Representatives.

Grades:  6 through 12 Number:  20-65 students per program Length:  2 hours Start Time:  10:00 a.m.

For more information about visiting the U.S. Capitol, including logistics and what not to bring with you, please go to  https://www.visitthecapitol.gov/plan-visit .

Additional Resources

Free lesson plans.

If you seek teaching ideas, take advantage of the free lesson plans available like Secession and the Senate –  What is secession? How did secession of the southern states from the Union during the Civil War affect the Senate, and how did the members respond? Or,  The U. S. House of Representatives and the Gag Rule – What is a gag rule? Why was a gag rule imposed by the House of Representatives? A member of the US Air Force is in critical condition after reportedly setting himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC, Sunday afternoon.

A video livestreamed on Twitch appears to show the airman in uniform standing in front of the embassy gate and identifying himself as a member of the US Air Force, the  New York Times  and  Washington Post  reported.

“I will no longer be complicit in genocide [in Gaza]. I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest,” the man apparently says before setting himself alight and repeatedly shouting, “Free Palestine!”

A man wearing a US Air Force uniform reportedly set himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy

The man says his name is Aaron Bushnell at the start of the clip, according to footage circulating online. A spokesperson for the Air Force confirmed that the protester is an active-duty airman, though they would not discuss his identity or rank.

Authorities at the scene can be heard asking, “May I help you, sir?” and yelling at the man to get down on the ground when he was on fire, the footage shows.

One person sprayed the man with a fire extinguisher, while another appeared to draw his gun.

The troubling footage was quickly removed on Sunday afternoon because it violated the streaming app’s guidelines. But recordings of it — some blurred — made their way onto other social media platforms.

First responders were dispatched to the scene at about 1 p.m., a spokesperson from DC Fire and EMS confirmed to The Post.

It was confirmed by a spokesperson for the Air Force that Aaron Bushnell is an active-duty airman.

By the time first responders arrived, the flames had already been extinguished by members of the US Secret Service, the fire service added.

The man was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Israeli Embassy did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for a comment on the incident.

The DC Fire and EMS services were dispatched to the scene shortly before 1 p.m.

No embassy staff were injured during the fire, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs said,  according to GLZ Radio .

The airman was not known to the embassy before the incident, the statement added.

He was still alive in critical condition as of 3 p.m. Sunday, according to MPD. Emails to the police department and Air Force about his condition were not immediately returned Sunday night.

The Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating alongside MPD.

Earlier footage shows more fire trucks and a hazmat crew arriving to inspect the man’s car, freelance reporter  Andrew Leyden shared on X.

The man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The vehicle appeared to be a silver Prius, according to  video footage from Alexis Wainwright of WUSA9 .

The car was later cleared and authorities determined there was no active threat, the MPD spokesperson said.

Hours after the incident, there still appeared to be a charred spot on the pavement outside the embassy,  FOX5 reported David Kaplan shared on X .

It’s not the first instance of the extreme method of protest against Israel’s offensive in Gaza.

In December, a protester set herself on fire outside Atlanta’s Israeli Consulate.

The self-immolations come after months of intense political tensions over Hamas’ Oct. 7 terrorist attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and Israel’s subsequent ground operations in the Gaza Strip.

The death toll in Gaza has reached nearly 30,000 people, including thousands of women and children, the Hamas-backed health ministry said. More than 200 Israeli soldiers have also died during the military’s ground campaign.

Earlier on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu  defended Israel’s controversial assault on the southern city of Rafah , saying it “has to be done” for a “total victory.”

Rafah is now the most densely populated Gaza city after Palestinians were forced to flee the Israeli military’s assault in the north.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Mateusz Klich and Kristian Fletcher scored late in the second half to help D.C. United rally for a 2-2 draw with the Portland Timbers on Saturday night.

Dairon Asprilla took a pass from Santiago Moreno and scored in the 18th minute as Portland (1-0-1) took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Moreno used an assist from Eric Miller in the 61st minute to find the net and push the Timbers’ lead to 2-0.

DC United (1-0-1) pulled within a goal on a penalty kick by Mateusz Klich in the 72nd minute. Klich’s netter followed a foul on Portland’s Diego Chará. Aaron Herrera fed Kristian Fletcher for the equalizer 10 minutes later.

Alex Bono saved one shot for DC United. Maxime Crépeau had six saves for the Timbers.

Portland hits the road to play New York City FC on March 9. DC United travels to play FC Cincinnati on March 10.
