Lesbian ,  gay ,  bisexual  and  transgender  ( LGBT ) rights in the  United States  have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in  states  with large conservative populations, such as in the  Deep South ; in rural areas; and in some  Native American tribal nations .

U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against  discrimination  on the basis of  sexual orientation  or  gender identity . In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the  Civil Rights Act of 1964 .

A business centre with fax and photocopying facilities allows travelling professionals to stay productive and accessible. A fitness centre and free weekday newspaper are provided as well at Hotel Highland Downtown.

Set in the Five Points South area, this polished hotel in an art deco style building is 2 miles from the Birmingham Zoo and 1 minute on foot from a bus stop.

Amenities consist of a restaurant/bar, a fitness room and a business center.

The property was originally a medical building, so the design team used its history to create a cool, hip, modern, apothecary theme, complete with front desk staff in white lab coats. The spacious apartment-like rooms are awesome with a cool modern boutique hotel vibe. It can be pricey as the rates fluctuate depending on local events and conferences.

The fun apothecary motif is carried through to the cocktail lounge. On display is a myriad of test tubes with brightly colored liquid and various lab equipment. It completely draws you into their “cocktail lab” for an enjoyable concoction!

The hotel is located in the trendy hip Five Points district so there are plenty of places within  walking   distance  to eat and enjoy craft beer and cocktails. Valet parking is pricey but I recommend it, as it solves the problem of downtown parking.

Parking is complimentary. Other amenities include a cafe and a hip lounge with a fireplace, plus an indoor pool and a fitness center.

It is  located  on the outskirts of downtown Birmingham. Very quiet neighborhood with several nice restaurant options within walking distance.

Check in was quick and the staff was great. Recognized status within the Bonvoy program and explained all the features of the property.

The rooms are standard across pretty much all aloft  hotels , which is nice. You always know what you will get and how it is laid out. The rooms are a very European layout and design. Simple, yet functional and fun.

The  hotel  is  located  for easy access into downtown Birmingham or the corporate areas of Homewood. I would highly recommend this property when in the Birmingham area for business or pleasure.

There are also several farm to table restaurants nearby, as well as, other cuisines such as Thai. All very good and great service.

The  hotel  is slightly off the beaten path, but it is absolutely a hidden gem. It is  located  in Homewood, which is south of Birmingham. The staff were friendly, professional and helpful. Parking is  located  behind the  hotel  and the  hotel  doesn’t charge for parking. There are plenty of restaurant options within walking distance and the area is very friendly for walking. Vulcan park is a 5 minute drive away that offers great views of the Birmingham skyline.

Hotel is gay  friendly as well. Room was clean, fresh smelling and quiet.

Hotel  was very clean, staff was friendly. Wonderful indoor pool and covered garage parking. Well stocked pantry area for a quick snack or something left behind. The only complaint, and it might be particular to our room, was the shower took over 5 minutes to get hot water and the pressure was very low. Beds were very comfortable.

Hand soap provided by  hotel  was excellent.  Hotel  is  located  in a quaint area of downtown but not very noisy and had shopping and restaurants close by. This is our new favorite  hotel in Birmingham.

Super trendy, spacious rooms, and great amenities are all parts of what make this a great  hotel  to in which to stay.

However, the  hotel  is  located  within walking distance to several great restaurants, and we were only 10 minutes from The Summit which is full of great dining and shopping options. This is our new favorite  hotel chain and we WILL return.

he bed was comfy, the shower awesome, and there was lots of stowage for our gear. The curtains provided complete blackout and we were able to sleep in. Never heard a sound from outside the room. Also good: I’m allergic to feathers and they gave us a room that is permanently de-feathered.

The only flaw was that the AC unit blows a strong stream of air right at bed level. That was a bit uncomfortable, but the comforter was nice and warm.

We ate at the restaurant, which had some nice live jazz and good food.

This was our first experience with Aloft hotels and we will definitely seek them out in the future.

he hotel was very convenient to the festivities. Easy to find, check in was very smooth, ample parking. The décor of the hotel is very nice . Lobby  bar  was lively. There was no complimentary breakfast however which is always a plus. Free wifi was nice. The room was nice.  Great  bathroom.

Complimentary hot breakfast every morning to enjoy while reading the newspaper or watching the local news. Fitness center on site as well as seasonal pool. Electric car chargers. Gas grill for those guests who do not want to eat our every night!

This location is out of the way from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet  awesome  dining is close by, as well as other venues. The staff here is  awesome , the rooms are great as well as this is a fairly priced location. I would category this location as home away from home.

For the price, I wasn’t expecting alot of amenities – and we were wrong. Continental breakfast was a full on buffet with fresh made waffles, eggs, breakfast ‘meat’ choice (sausage one morning, bacon another), oatmeal, yogurt, bakery items, juices, fruit, etc. There’s an outdoor swimming pool that opens Memorial day weekend, and an indoor fitness room, as well as a full use laundry room.

WiFi throughout the hotel. Quick grab drinks/snacks. And way so much more. The room itself was amazing – we got a king suite for under $80/night after taxes, and it was HUGE.

I was also impressed how quiet it was, no downtown city sounds at all, with a beautiful view of the foothills and night sky from our room. (I was actually shocked when we got back home, and realized our house in a country suburb gets more ‘city noise’ than the hotel room did!)

Best part though? The staff – smiling, friendly, full of compliments and always willing to help! Will definitely be staying here again and again in the future!

Check in was very fast and the clerk was very friendly and helpful. Room was clean and very comfortable . The  bed  was clean and  comfortable . The hot breakfast included was delicious and a welcome bonus. We had a King room with a couch and desk and it was perfect for our needs!! Would recommend and will stay again if in the area.

The rooms were clean, the  bed  was  comfortable . The front desk was nice. Great room for a great price. Will definitely be staying here again. Nice location as well. Breakfast buffet could have some improvement to it but, besides that I enjoyed my stay and would definitely recommend it.

Southern Pride: A Guide to Birmingham, Alabama’s LGBTQ Scene

Birmingham might not instantly come to mind when you think of LGBTQ-friendly cities, but it deserves a second look.

By Annette Benedetti on September 18, 2018

Birmingham, AL, is one of the 2023 March Madness Host Cities.

Southern Pride is our monthly column exploring and celebrating LGBTQ culture in Southern cities. This month we’re heading to sweet home Alabama to check out the scene in Birmingham.

Chances are Birmingham doesn’t instantly come to mind when you think of LGBTQ-friendly cities, but with an impressive Human Rights Campaign 2017 Municipal Equality Index  (MEI) of 83, the city is much more inclusive than you might expect.

In fact, in June of this year, Birmingham’s mayor Randall Woodfin selected Josh Coleman to serve as the city’s first LGBTQ liaison. Colman’s position and work strengthens the queer community’s relationship with the city, ensuring their concerns are heard and considered. This new show of support for the LGBTQ community is sure to make this Southern town feel even more welcoming to members of the gay community looking to move to the area.

The following are some of the LGBTQ-friendly offerings residents of Birmingham enjoy – and why more members of the LGBTQ community may want to consider calling Birmingham home.

In This Article

Group Athletics

Athletes looking for an active community where they feel welcome have plenty of options in Birmingham. For those who love a good game, fun can be found on the field with the New South Softball League. Organized in 1982, the league became a member of the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance in 1983 and includes players of all experience and skill levels. It has three divisions, providing a place for everyone who wants to play.

5 Surprisingly LGBTQ-Friendly Small Cities

The Magic City Wellness Center provides a variety of health and wellness services and activities for the queer community and hosts a weekly LGBTQ Running Group. Beginners are welcome as this training group is designed to help members get or stay active. The group meets once a week on Sundays and starts with interval walk/runs so all levels and abilities feel welcome.

LGBTQ Youth Support

The Magic City Acceptance Center (MCAC) is an LGBTQ-Youth support space that provides community events, workshops, heath services, free counseling and more to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer kids and their allies ages 13-24. They have regular drop-in hours where youth are able to relax, do homework or play video games and have snacks in an accepting environment. Regular movie nights, a book club and opportunities to try open mic are scheduled regularly throughout the month as well.

Birmingham AL

Community Events

Throughout the year, a variety of support groups including the Magic City Wellness Center and the MCAC host a variety of small events and activities designed to bring the community together. Residents can get “in the know†by visiting their Facebook pages’ event sections which are often packed with things to do.

Southern Pride: A Guide to Louisville’s Vibrant LGBTQ Scene

Central Alabama Pride is the biggest LGTBQ community event, and it runs over 10 days in June of each year. Queer individuals and their allies enjoy a multitude of opportunities to meet other members of the LGTBQ community at pride activities including the Central Alabama Pride Parade, Queer Prom, a dance off and the big Pride Fest.

Another beloved annual queer event is Birmingham’s SHOUT LGBTQ Film Festival . It typically runs over a week in August starting with introductory events leading up to a weekend filled with movie screenings. The festival showcases features, documentaries and short flicks that offer viewers the opportunity to enjoy films that keep topics of interest to the queer community in the spotlight.

Inclusive Dining Options

If you are a foodie, then Birmingham’s excellent eateries that provide an inclusive environment are one of the city’s best features. Some of the LGBTQ community favorites are Rojo , a restaurant located in the city’s Highland Park area that feature’s incredible Latin food and patio dining. Highlands Bar & Grill is another beloved option that elicits national adoration with its seasonal menu of French-inspired cuisine and regional Southern fare. Its upscale atmosphere is perfect for date night or a next-level night out with the friends. For a Tuscan experience, Bellini’s Ristorante & Bar serves up delightful dishes, desserts and cocktails.

Great Night Life

Birmingham has plenty of options available for those looking to get out and have some fun in the evening. Al’s on Seventh is one of the most popular gay bars in the area. They host regular drag shows, karaoke nights and a variety of parties throughout the year. Our Place is another lounge located on Seventh Street that provides a place to grab some drinks while enjoying the occasional show. But if hitting the dance floor is your thing, Quest Club is the place to be. Moving To LGBT Birmingham, Alabama? How To Find Your Perfect Gay Neighborhood!

Louise Lopez expertly guides queer individuals to vibrant, inclusive U.S. and North American neighborhoods with 15+ years of dedicated experience, ensuring they find not just a home, but a community where their authenticity is celebrated and protected.

Are you thinking of moving to LGBT Birmingham? There are a few things you should know.

Birmingham, also known as ‘The Pittsburgh of the South’ as a result of its history producing steel and iron, is Alabama’s largest city and is also ranked among the top 100 best places in the U.S. to live. This is in large part due to the city’s thriving job market, low cost of living, and vibrant music scene.

Birmingham may not immediately spring to mind when considering LGBTQ-friendly places, but with a Human Rights Campaign 2017 Municipal Equality Index (MEI) of 83, the city is far more inclusive than you might assume, and it is certainly worth a second look.

Like Savannah , Ashville , Raleigh , and other Southern US cities, there is a lively gay scene here (if you know where to look), and this is something a gay realtor in Birmingham can help you navigate as you find your new perfect home here.

Before we dig a little deeper to find out what the city has in store for you as a member of the LGBTQ community, let’s first take a look at some of the highlights of moving to LGBTQ Birmingham, Alabama.

Highlights Of Moving To LGBTQ Birmingham

Does birmingham embrace the lgbtq community, is birmingham an expensive city to move to, lgbtq+ community organizations in birmingham, regular lgbt events in birmingham, lgbt owned businesses in birmingham, final thoughts on moving to lgbtq birmingham, finding gay realtors in birmingham alabama.

Birmingham is Alabama’s largest city and is home to more than one million people. Birmingham is a city with a rich and complicated history but is also considered progressive, urbane, modern, and with a unique personality.

Segregation’s deep wounds are still unmistakable, but Birmingham of the 2020s accepts and memorializes its tangled history while looking to thrive in the present and future. The city will ensure your move here comes with plenty of opportunities for fun and excitement. Here’s more of what Birmingham has to offer.

The Great Outdoors

While there’s plenty that Birmingham offers indoors, there’s also plenty to enjoy outdoors. For a day of outdoor exploration, the Rufner Mountain is an excellent hiking location offering panoramic views of the city.

To see the world’s largest cast-iron statue, head over to the Vulcan Parks and Museum or visit Birmingham Zoo, an amazing facility that houses more than 230 animal species, which hosts exciting events such as Boo at the Zoo.

Art Lover’s Paradise

If you’re a lover of history and culture, you’re going to love Birmingham. The city has 20+ cultural attractions for you to explore. Birmingham Museum of Art is considered the best in the city and features a variety of artwork from classic paintings, to contemporary sculptures, to modern photography.

The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum showcases classic roadsters and vintage bikes from around the world. The museum also has a racetrack where people attend events such as the Barber Vintage Festival. If you’re looking for activities that will engage your kids, take some time off at the McWane Science Center and let them explore exhibits or watch a film at the IMAX Dome.

The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame is an excellent choice for the sports fan to view 6,000+ sports memorabilia or learn about popular athletes like Hank Aaron and Jesse Owens.

Birmingham Barbecue

Many cities in America are self-proclaimed barbecue havens. However, the truth is, if you’re looking for a unique experience, Birmingham is definitely your go-to. Birmingham barbecue comes slicked in a delicious white barbecue sauce.

Restaurants such as Myra’s Pit Bar-B-Q are popular for offering the city’s best taste of smoked meat. Another Birmingham favorite to enjoy some barbecue is Full Moon Bar-B-Que which serves this smoky dish with a refreshing vinaigrette slaw and fresh-baked cookies.

Birmingham approved protections on discrimination o the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation. The city has also received a perfect score from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. This organization is the educational part of the country’s largest LGBTQ civil rights group in collaboration with the Equality Federation Institute (EFI).

The Municipal Equality Index (MEI) is the countries only nationwide assessment of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer inclusion in policies and laws in municipalities across the country. While Birmingham received the highest MEI score, it’s saddening to note that the average for cities in the state is 28/100. This figure falls below the U.S. average of 60.

In June 2021, the Human Rights Campaign endorsed Randall Woodfin, Birmingham Mayor, for the re-election of the general election. Mayor Woodfin worked to promote and improve LGBTQ equality in the city and is a known champion of the community. During his time as mayor, he openly opposed anti-transgender legislation, and together with the LGBTQ Task Force Board, they opposed legislation against transgender people in the city.

Woodfin made efforts to ensure Birmingham became a more inclusive city and has directed the city towards becoming one of the most welcoming regions for the LGBTQ community in the South. Other than working as a mayor, Woodfin is a known champion for equality, ensuring that the city of Birmingham offers a safe, accessible, and prosperous environment for the LGBTQ population living here.

The results of his efforts are an improved MEI score. Before he was elected as mayor in 2016, the city’s MEI score was a dismal 12%. In 2017, a non-discrimination ordinance helped bring up the score to 77% and then 100%. In 2018, Birmingham’s first LGBTQ Liaison was appointed to fast-track the creation of the city’s Human Rights Commission and implement the non-discrimination ordinance.

All Birmingham city employees have access to inclusive health benefits thanks to an insurance plan that covers trans healthcare needs such as hormone therapy, gender-affirming surgery, and mental health support established under the LGBTQ Advisory Board.

All this is to try to answer an incredibly nuanced question of whether Birmingham, Alabama, is LGBTQ-friendly? The truth is that while the bigotry of the rest of Alabama does more than just creep, Birmingham as a city is doing its best to make itself a safe place for queer individuals, and we hope this progress continues into the future.

Birmingham was once very popular and relatively expensive due to its industrial economy. However, times have changed, and the city now features a diverse economy with financial services and banking at the center of the economy. Telecommunications, electric power, and transportation are also significant employers in the city. Higher education in Birmingham is also a considerable employer, with institutions such as the University of Alabama Medical School, Samford University, University of Alabama-Birmingham, and Birmingham Law School offering numerous employment opportunities.

Birmingham has a 74.1 cost of living score with a national average of 100, meaning the city is less expensive than many other cities in the U.S. Most apartments in Birmingham cost around $500- $1,300 in rent per month. While rent is slightly more compared to other Alabama areas, it’s still a little less than the countries average.

Studio apartments in Birmingham cost around $675 per month, one-bedroom apartments cost around $900 per month, and two-bedroom apartments cost about $900 per month. Three and four-bedroom apartments cost on average $1,022 and $1,315, respectively.

When looking for the ideal realtor, why would you consider someone’s sexuality? This may seem strange at first, but there are several reasons why contacting a gay realtor in Birmingham is a great way to find your dream house.

After all, when it relates to one of life’s most important transactions, it’s not unreasonable to expect fair, equal, and honest representation from someone who understands the queer community’s particular needs and wishes. Furthermore, unfortunately, many people (up to a third of Americans) continue to believe that our community does not deserve protection and dignity in housing, adoption, employment, and other areas of life.

So it’s no surprise that LGBT people who use mainstream realtors often describe feelings of discomfort, unnecessary trouble, unenthusiastic representation, or even antagonism or outright contempt. Everyone deserves a pleasant, stress-free home buying or selling experience while being adequately represented, and this is why we feel you should hire a gay realtor to assist you in finding your future home.

LGBTQ realtors are more likely to be familiar with the diverse communities in their area and know which ones may be best suited to you when looking for a home. That’s not to say a heterosexual realtor isn’t capable, but they’ve probably never had to address many of the issues LGBT people face. Rather than just being concerned with how bustling, fashionable, or up-and-coming a neighborhood is (or what it may appear like), gay realtors conduct extensive research into the neighborhoods in which they sell homes to ensure that clients are safe.

It used to be difficult to locate professional LGBT-friendly real estate agents in Birmingham, and it was virtually impossible to find one if you were relocating here from out of state and didn’t have access to a local referral. You no longer have to search for a realtor without knowing whether or not they are accepting of others because you can use a list of gay, lesbian, and gay-friendly agents in Birmingham to do all of your homework for you.

Simply go to the page, and you’ll be presented with a free list of gay, lesbian, and gay-friendly agents who can help you with your relocation as well as other useful information like LGBT+friendly schools, shopping, storage firms, tradesmen, and more. Read the biographies of LGBT real estate agents, then choose the one who is right for you. It’s critical that you find someone who will be by your side and support you and your family during one of life’s most exciting occasions.

Even better, there is no hidden motive, cost, or obligation whatsoever!

Top 11 Gay Friendly Hotels In Birmingham

travel gay birmingham

Britain’s second-largest city Birmingham brims with exciting possibilities. The city boasts beautifully restored Victorian buildings, picturesque canals, and glitzy, futuristic real estate. And it also boasts a fantastic heritage in the form of the Jewelry Quarter. What’s more, Birmingham is also home to a diverse and vibrant LGBTQ+ population and also hosts the UK’s biggest two-day Pride festival. This was evident by the fact that we found no dearth of choices for gay hotels in Birmingham, UK, to stay at.

The origins of Birmingham’s gay scene go back to the 1980s with the rise of Birmingham Gay Village, one of the liveliest gayborhoods in England . Centered around Hurst Street next to the Chinese Quarter, Gay Brum, as it’s also known, is the epicenter of the inclusive gay life in the city. Along with Oriental-influenced architecture, Hurst Street also has some fabulous gay street art, which now occupies pride of place on our Instagram. The city celebrates the spectacular Birmingham Pride, which is the UK’s second-biggest Pride event after the London Pride, besides a gamut of other LGBTQ-centered festivals. These include SHOUT, which celebrates queer culture and arts, the Gay and Lesbian Pride Ball, and the Christmas Ball.

To that end, here’s a comprehensive guide to gay Birmingham.

The Fountain Inn is a longstanding Birmingham Gay Village institution. This gays-only bar-cum-hotel is where we crashed to dive headfirst into Birmingham’s gay scene. The gay-owned and operated inn has been a favorite with the LGBTQ set for years now, and it shows.

Fountain Inn calls itself an “independent gay bar and letting rooms,” but the vibe is so much more than that. The place was practically the epicenter of all the exciting action in the Gay Village. We loved chugging beer and meeting people at the fabulous, traditional Fountain Inn bar, which even has a beer garden. There’s even a separate, men-only lounge with gaming machines and pool tables. It’s one of the best ways to relax while staying here.

When it comes to staying, we could choose between standard and suite rooms. They are simple and elegant, with wooden floors, wet rooms, comfy beds, and tea-coffee facilities. Plus, suites boasted more foot space with living areas. We had access to a complimentary coffee station with hot drinks, biscuits, and fresh fruit. What’s more, the fabulous posse of Gay Village bars and cruising clubs is right down the street.

Best value for money. The bustling Birmingham Central Backpackers is one of the most unique hotels in Birmingham. One of the best things about this award-winning gay-friendly hostel is the staff itself. They’re extremely friendly, helpful, and sensitive, and nothing was ever too much trouble for them!

Then, there was the place itself. We loved the zany common room and bar area, which is the lively social area for the hostel. It’s where we ended up meeting many interesting people. What’s more, the colorful and spacious dorms match the laidback, welcoming, and social vibe that the hostel has going on. The best bit was that they even had a little garden for summer BBQs, which was perfect since we were in Birmingham for the summer.

The hostel is an easy 15-minute walk from Gay Brum. We were able to explore this fascinating neighborhood on this interesting 2-hour Discovering Birmingham Walking Tour .

We couldn’t find a better centrally-located hotel in Birmingham than the Leonardo Royal Hotel Birmingham , one of the city’s largest hotels. Don’t be fooled by the 1970s Brutalist monolithic concrete exterior, for the interiors are contemporary and plush to the hilt. We were welcomed in the sprawling, open-plan foyer, all done up in blacks and light greys. The social spaces, like the bar and lounge, have a wonderful relaxing vibe to them. There are lots of private spots with sultry low lighting and grey, lime green, and purple hues to get the conversation going.

The rooms were the epitome of comfort, complete with all mod-cons and super-snug beds. Since we wanted to enjoy terrific views of the Birmingham skyline, we specifically requested rooms on the higher floors. While there’s a hearty paid breakfast waiting, the room-only packages were helpful for those mornings when we felt lazy. Finally, what also makes the hotel great is its location, which is a 20-minute walk from Hurst Street.

Leonardo Royal Hotel Birmingham - by Booking

Most non-chain luxury. We liked the sleek and chic Clayton Hotel because it’s not a chain hotel, and yet offered one of the most luxurious stays we’ve ever had. Despite being removed from the city center and its bustle, it was close enough to the main attractions.

The hotel impressed us right as we walked in. The floor-to-ceiling windows, high-backed plush velvet chairs, and large black lamps were extremely pleasing to the eye. However, it was the giant ceiling-hung circular lights and circular orbs on the glass staircase that were hard to tear our eyes away from. While the staff quickly checked us in, we captured some ridiculously amazing photos for the ‘Gram.

The rooms at the Clayton are peppered with rich, muted colors, dark wood, and leather, apart from featuring super-comfy beds. The larger ones even have mini-fridges and separate sitting rooms. All of them, however, have hi-tech mod-cons, a touch-control system, and a media hub, allowing guests to connect personal devices to the surround sound system. The lovely lounge bar is great for grabbing a bite.

Coolest hotel. The Brummie beauty that is the Staying Cool Hotel was extremely hard to beat when it came to location, comfort, and pizzazz. The ultra-cool hotel is undoubtedly one of the grooviest LGBTQ-friendly hotels in Birmingham.

The design hotel is located within the 24-story cylindrical Rotunda building, which housed an office in the 1960s. The decor is distinctly space-age, complete with glowing droplights that change colors. We loved the room designs that blended swinging 60s and contemporary chic designs and ranged from mini-studios to penthouses. The apartments were peppered with splashes of vibrant colors complemented by glass tables, wool-fabric sofas, and large photographs. Moreover, slick Bose speaker docks and Sky TV ensured ready entertainment. What’s more, the stays use renewable energy, and energy/water conservation is right on point. If that wasn’t enough, all of them also had a selection of coffees and teas, fresh milk, and cereals.

“Staying cool came naturally at this chic hotel, and we loved everything about it. Whether it was the slick mod-cons in the rooms or the amenities, Staying Cool is the place to stay at.” WOW Travel

Staying Cool is extremely well-connected too. The Grand Central metro station is a four-minute walk, while the dazzling gay scene at Hurst Street is a mere 10-minute walk. Also, most of Birmingham’s attractions are a 10-15-minute walk.

Best Gay Village chain hotel. Are you looking for a modern, comfortable, chain hotel stay in Gay Brum? You’d do well to choose the sleek Radisson Blu , as staying here allowed us to explore the Gay Village as well as the city.

As we walked past the bold glass exterior later, we saw a relaxing foyer with an urban-chic vibe. Statement designer furniture, elegant oversized drop lights, and warm woods dotted the hotel. There was even a bright wall collage of 20th-century cultural icons. The small gym worked perfectly well for the workout crowd. Meanwhile, the restaurant serves up a delicious menu, along with a hearty paid breakfast in the morning.

Rooms at the Radisson boast tons of natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows. Creams/whites and greys are complemented by vibrant carmine reds, complete with comfy beds and lots of space. Business rooms even have a work desk, which is perfect for those in the city for work.

Staying at the edgy Malmaison was a splashy, hedonistic staying experience! The buzzing, gay-friendly designer retreat was once Birmingham’s Royal Mail sorting office. The sultry vibe began right from the low-lit lobby with vibrant modern art, wood paneling, and stone floors. A grand movie-esque staircase led to the plush brasserie bar. There are tons of public areas designed for both intimacy and entertainment. We loved the pamper packages at the spa, while the aptly named ‘Work + Play’ zone is ideal for both business and meet-cutes. Those who are fitness freaks will love the comfort of the small gym on-site.

All that said, it was the rooms and suites at the Malmaison that really upped the glamorous and sexy quotient. We could choose between bedrooms and suites, complete with velvet-upholstered beds and pop-art posters. Since we wanted the complete Malmaison experience, we chose one of the four open-plan luxury suites. They have not only roomy sitting areas but also alluring ensuite bathrooms. Our room had a hot tub right in the room – now that’s what we call a sexy holiday!

If you get out of this foxy space to explore the streets of Birmingham, most of its best attractions are within walking distance. All Centenary Square attractions, Grand Central Metro Station, the Chinese Quarter, and Gay Village are all 5-10 minutes away.

The Cube Hotel sits on the top two floors of the dazzling bronze and gold geometric forms of the eponymous Cube building. The gay-friendly hotel is an oasis of urban cool and is infused with beautiful Scandi interiors and decor.

Indulgence is the highlight of this hotel, which offered us a choice of complimentary chocolates, fruit, and water at check-in/check-out. The Cube’s spa has a sauna, pool, and steam room and is wonderful for soaking away all tiredness. After all, it’s one of the best hotel pools in Birmingham . Since we were here with our partner, we chose the “Heavenly” treatment, which featured a facial and a massage. What’s even better is that we had our treatment in a couple’s suite, allowing us to indulge in an hour of relaxation with our partner.

The alfresco rooftop lounge was our favorite place on the property. We’d grab a cocktail here before heading out to the city’s gay scene. What’s more, we could even do a bit of celebrity spotting at Marco Pierre White rooftop restaurant, which is a hotspot for footballers’ wives. The rooms and suites done up in creams and greens are refreshing and soothing and feature fantastic views of Birmingham’s skyline from floor-to-ceiling windows.

Perfectly positioned between Gay Village and the Jewelry Quarter, the Cube Hotel is the perfect indulgent base for an all-around exploration of Birmingham.

Budget-conscious gay travelers looking to explore historic Birmingham will love the convenience and prices at StayCity Aparthotels Jewellery Quarter . We were able to soak in the sounds and sights of the vibrant Jewellery Quarter, with the gay scene also being a 20-minute metro ride away.

The apartments at this StayCity outpost feature comfy rooms, kitchens, living rooms with sofa beds, and even balconies. There’s even space to spread out with sitting and dining areas, free Wi-Fi, and a flat-screen TV. Furthermore, the accommodation even has weekly housekeeping, making this budget stay an amazing option for travelers. With Hurst Street and its gay bars like Eden and The Fox a stone’s throw away, gay guests at StayCity even have entertainment right at their doorstep.

One of the best LGBTQ-friendly hotels in Birmingham city center is Ibis Styles Birmingham Center . We loved many things about this comfy, budget, chain accommodation in a central location. For one, it doesn’t have a chain hotel aesthetic. This is thanks to the bold artwork celebrating local Brutalist architecture and interesting color schemes. The design might be French, but the feel is innately British since murals of Birmingham’s most prominent attractions are hung all over.

Rooms at this Ibis outpost feature all mod-cons and are extremely spacious, considering the hotel is budget accommodation. A vibrant lounge with a dizzying array of yellow and bright green patterns made for a great place to relax and have a cuppa. The gaming area is an interesting space where we struck up interesting conversations with the other hotel guests. The Ibis even laid out a hearty and delectable continental breakfast.

The Library of Birmingham, the City Gardens, and the Birmingham Museum are all right across from the hotel. Moreover, the Jewelry Quarter and the Gay Village are both within walking distance.

Are you young, budget-conscious gay travelers looking to stay in the city center? Do what we did and stay at the Hampton by Hilton . Located on the bustling Broad Street, the gay-friendly hotel has a stellar central location, complete with some of Birmingham’s liveliest bars and fast-food outlets.

What we loved was the hotel’s vibrant interiors, which clash beautifully with the 1960s concrete exterior. It boasted a bright ambiance with local photographs, plants, recessed lamps and spotlights, groovy carpets, and stained wood floors. For a budget hotel, we had everything they needed. There’s a cleverly used breakout area that features an array of modern, comfy furniture. It was great for catching up with people we knew in the city. There’s even a compact fitness center and a quiet, good-sized business center. There’s even a very American ‘hydration point,’ and Birmingham’s water is very, very good.

The rooms and suites are spacious with tea/coffee-making facilities, large mirrors, bright-patterned carpets, and fresh egg-white walls. If you want great views of the city, do ask for a higher floor room if they have one. Young gay travelers like us will love the fact that Hampton by Hilton is a mere 20-minute walk from Birmingham’s fabulous gay bars at Hurst Street. Also, the city center attractions at Centenary Square are just five minutes away.

  • Birmingham Pride : The weekend-long LGBTQ+ festival is the largest two-day pride festival celebrated in the United Kingdom. Held in the Gay Village on Hurst Street, the festivities usually include a carnival parade, street entertainment, music, and dance events.
  • The Village Inn – This is one of the most popular and longest-running bars or, rather, gay spaces in Birmingham. It lies in the heart of Gay Brum and is home to some of the most amazing and diverse queer talent in the UK. On weekends, they have live cabaret shows.
  • Nightingale Club – This ‘gay superclub’ has one of Birmingham’s largest outdoor spaces. It has drag shows, DJs, and even a weekend street food market.
  • The Loft Lounge – This long-running, laidback Gay Brum mainstay has fantastic cocktails and a steamy after-dark dancing scene.
  • Eden – This relaxed, trendy gay bar has a gorgeous outdoor garden, great beers and spirits, and an exciting, upscale crowd. It strives to bring you the best in LGBTQ entertainment from all over the UK.
  • Missing Bar – This lively Victorian-style LGBTQ+ ‘party bar’ is known for its DJ nights and Go-Go dancers.
  • The Fox – This bar is perhaps Gay Brum’s only dedicated lesbian bar and attracts a great crowd of women of all ages. Karaoke nights turn into a fun-filled singalong scene where men are also welcome.
  • Boltz Club : This members-only men-only cruising club has darkrooms, theme nights, and even ‘watersports’ for members.

Birmingham doesn’t have an extensive gay sauna scene right now. However, for those looking for one, the Spartan gay sauna is a 15-minute drive from Birmingham.

Birmingham Stallions unveil 2024 schedule ahead of first UFL season

B IRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The United Football League (UFL) released their full slate of games to be played in the first season since the USFL and XFL merged to create the new league.

As was announced by Dwayne Johnson and Dani Garcia when the new league became official , the opening game of the season will be a battle between the 2023 USFL and XFL Champions as the Birmingham Stallions travel to the Arlington Renegades.

The game will be broadcast on FOX with kickoff scheduled for noon.

Birmingham Stallions Schedule

The League will play 43 games in its first season, including 40 regular season games, two conference championship games, and the UFL Championship Game. Divided into two conference, the USFL Conference and the XFL Conference, each team will play six conference games and four non-conference

The USFL and XFL Conference Championship games are scheduled for Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 with the UFL Championship Game taking place on Sunday, June 16. Each game will pit the top two teams with the best record in their respective conference against each other to decide who will go on to play for the conference championship.

UFL Conferences

Birmingham head coach Skip Holtz said he is looking forward to some great matchups this season.

“With nine Saturday games and one Sunday game and being on each network five times, we think this schedule will allow the Stallions and the UFL a lot of exposure to gain new fans and give our loyal fans a chance to see us more,” Holtz said. “We’ll have the opportunity to play in Arlington and San Antonio at least once, and we’re excited to have St. Louis and D.C. in Birmingham this season. I’m not a fan of snakes, so having D.C. here in Birmingham means we don’t have to face the beer snake there! The schedule allows a lot of our fans to get out to see us in our favorite city of Birmingham five times this season and maybe even travel to see us on the road.”

The UFL’s games will be broadcast across FOX and Disney-owned networks, with FOX Sports leading the way with 21 games to be broadcast on FOX affiliates, including WBRC FOX6.

“We can’t wait to kick off the United Football League’s inaugural season and showcase the league’s exceptional on-the-field play to football fans across the country,” said Bill Wanger, FOX Sports EVP, Head of Programming & Scheduling. “Perhaps most critically, this new partnership brings unprecedented distribution for spring football with nearly three-quarters of games airing on broadcast television. It is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the league office, media partners and host cities to maximize exposure to contribute to the UFL’s success.”

Other opening weekend matchups include St. Louis traveling to Michigan on March 30 on WBRC FOX6 and D.C. going to San Antonio and Houston hosting Memphis, both on March 31.

Protective Stadium will again be the home of the Stallions as they look to continue the success they had in the USFL, winning back-to-back championships in 2022 and 2023.

“We are equally excited to welcome new and returning fans back into our buildings this season so they can immerse themselves in the energy around spring football,” said UFL President and CEO, Russ Brandon. “Our players are here to perform and to reach the next level and our fans are going to be treated to an excellent on-field product and in-stadium experience.”
