REI’s Portland Adventure Ends With Opening of Beaverton Store
The new 39,000-square-foot cedar hills store is the brand’s largest in oregon..
REI opened its enormous new Beaverton store on Friday—the largest in Oregon—making the retailer’s full exodus from Portland proper complete. REI Beaverton replaces the co-op’s Pearl District location that closed earlier this year.
The three-day celebration included giveaways and afternoon “outdoor socials” with music, nonprofits and outdoor brands such as Cotopaxi, Salomon and Arc’teryx and Columbia. As the anchor tenant at Walker Center in Cedar Hills, the 39,000-square-foot store features the largest gear and apparel assortment in the state, along with full-service bike, ski and snowboard shops.
The exuberant grand opening smarts a little in the context of how REI’s time in the Pearl ended. Last April, the retailer announced it would close its Northwest 14th Avenue and Johnson Street location due to the highest number of break-ins and thefts in its 20 years in the neighborhood.
“The safety of our employees, members and customers is always our No. 1 priority. In recent years, Portland has been dealing with increased crime in our neighborhood and beyond,” the company said to members in an email at the time.
The company had also outgrown the Pearl District space and the building needed upgrades that it could not agree on with the landlord. REI closed its doors Feb. 1, despite Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler meeting with company officials to try to convince them to stay and the Portland Police Bureau parking temporary security camera trailers at REI’s loading dock to deter theft.
In August, REI regional director Bob Cagle said that REI Beaverton is “conveniently located in the middle of the metropolitan area and complement[s] our stores in Hillsboro, Tualatin and Clackamas.”
With the opening of REI Beaverton, the co-op now has nine stores in the state. There are 303,000 REI members in the Portland market and 936,000 in Oregon.
“Our team of 90 inspired guides look forward to sharing our beautiful new store with REI members and the outdoor community,” REI Beaverton store manager Dacia Stockton says. “Our location is full service in every way—from the largest gear and apparel assortments sold by REI in the state to the region’s top bike and snow shop mechanics to a knowledgeable sales team ready to share advice on where to go and which products can help make your next adventure a success.”

Halloween Events and Haunted Places in Portland
Embrace the season’s spooky spirit with an array of annual festivities and haunted places..
The Pacific Northwest is rife with spooky lore and tales of things that go bump in the night. Halloween is the prime time to check out Portland’s many mysterious spots, paranormal activity, haunted houses, corn mazes, and spirited walking tours.
Portland’s Annual Halloween Events
Returning to the Tualatin Commons every October, The West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta is a cherished local event where costumed racers pilot gigantic gourds through a watercourse on Tualatin Commons lake. The event kicks off with a giant pumpkin parade and weigh-off, followed by a full day of pumpkin paddlers plying the shallow lake in 1,000-pound pumpkin boats.
The Oregon Zoo celebrates the spooky season with Howloween . This fun and safe Halloween tradition invites costumed trick-or-treaters to learn about healthy habitats for wildlife, see a magic show and guess the weight of the giant pumpkin.
Put on your best costume and get moving during the Run Like Hell Marathon . This annual walk/run follows along a paved trail where costumed runners and walkers can join in on a half marathon and compete in a costume contest simultaneously. Live music, beer, food and entertainment await the runners at the finish line.

The Oddities & Curiosities Expo showcases hand-selected vendors, dealers, artists and small businesses from all over the country with all things weird. Stroll around the Oregon Convention Center while shopping for items such as taxidermy, preserved specimens, original artwork and horror/Halloween-inspired pieces.
The Spirit of Halloweentown , a fun, family-friendly celebration of the season’s spookiest holiday in St. Helen’s Old Town District. Expect costume contests, trick-or-treating, haunted town tours and scarecrows galore (the town even lights a “Great Pumpkin” in the city plaza).
The Spirit of Halloweentown
The historic town of St. Helens, located 45 minutes from Portland, celebrates Halloween all month long with haunted tours, costume contests and more.
Haunted Houses
Portland likes its scares as much as any other city and has the haunted houses to prove it. Some of the biggest annual options include Underhill Haunted House at the Moda Center and The Fear PDX Haunted House . Oaks Amusement Park also boasts Oregon’s only scream park, Oaks Park Scaregrounds . You can walk through haunted attractions and then hop on a roller coaster for even more screams.
Haunted Portland
One of the city’s largest and best-kept pioneer-era graveyards, Lone Fir Cemetery serves as the final resting place for 25,000 souls — believer or not, that’s pretty good odds for spirit-spotting and ghost stories. McMenamin’s White Eagle Saloon claims to play host to several apparitions, from a prostitute named Rose to the souls of unwitting residents kidnapped via Portland’s infamous Shanghai Tunnels . Arguably, Portland’s most famous — and persistent — phantom, “Nina,” has bedeviled the same spot for more than a century at Old Town Pizza .
Spooky Bars
For screams and giggles anytime of year, step into the adjoining Bar and Clown Room of Funhouse Lounge , grab a beer or a shot and admire the dozens upon dozens of (semi-creepy) clown portraits that line the walls. Grab your goth friends and get ready to dance at Portland’s premier horror-themed bar, The Coffin Club . At Creepy’s , a bar in Central Eastside , find circus monkeys clapping sporadically, questionable taxidermy, and clown portraits and trinkets scattered about. In Old Town check into the Overlook Hotel at HallwayPDX , The Shining-themed karaoke bar or head over to Raven’s Manor , a haunted manor-themed bar that serves small bites and cocktails nearly every day of the year.

Get Travel Insurance
Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).
Book Flights
I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner ! My second favorite site to find flights is Momondo , another great site for finding cheap flights.
Book a Place to Stay
I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.
If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO .
Rent Clothes
Rent clothes for your trip with Travel Style Expert for only $50 a month!
Choose Activities and Tours
To find great activities in any area I use Get Your Guide and Viator . If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available.
When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar . They’ve got fantastic weekly deals.
Rent a Car or Take a Lyft
More often than not Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit ! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Discover Cars .
