PGA Tour app, website getting complete overhaul ahead of 2023 season

1227887893

Keyur Khamar

Casual fans asked. Diehard fans asked. Gamblers (extra-diehard fans) asked. Even PGA Tour players asked. And they listened. The PGA Tour app and PGATour.com have been entirely redone ahead of 2023, with both set to unveiled new and improved versions in the coming weeks.

This news is sure to be well-received by golf fans who have struggled with loading speeds, incorrect scores, lack of video and imagery, and other issues on the PGA Tour app and website. Not surprisingly, those issues and concerns have been voiced—loudly—on social media over the years.

Those criticisms were not only heard but accounted for in the updates. Eric Hanson, PGA Tour VP of Digital Product Development, led the initiative from the start, spending much of his time doing fan and user research as well as talking to tour players who also frequent the app.

RELATED: Another PGA Tour pro can boast of winning $10 million in his career without actually winning

As big a deal as the website redesign is, the app overhaul will be of greater interest to younger golf fans who consume everything via mobile devices that fits in their pocket. Both iOS and Android users can manually update the PGA Tour app beginning on Tuesday, although those who have "auto updates" on won't see anything different just yet. The relaunch is a limited release, also known as a slow rollout, beginning with one percent of the users and then five, 10, 20 percent and so on. This will allow the tour to get instant feedback on how the app is performing and will allow developers to respond to any issues or bugs that may arise. By the end of this week’s RSM Classic, it will be available to everyone.

What can fans expect from the new app? For starters, according to Hanson, faster loading speeds, particularly for the leader board, which will be more user-friendly and will have a cleaner look. As soon as the ball goes in the hole, the app will update your favorite player's score, and you'll be able to quickly go into their scorecard to see shot trails and stats. This will be of particular intrigue to actual players.

"We didn't realize how many players come into our app and get their stats from their round," Hanson said. "One of the things they wanted to be able to do was parse it by round. They'll be able to do that and see how they're playing overall with all of these filters we built inside the app to allow both fans and players to go through all these different stats and really dive deep into them."

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/Leaderboard2-Final.png

Adding more visual stories and course imagery was also prioritized. The first thing fans will see when they open the new app is highlights from whichever round of a particular tournament is going on, and they'll be able to relive a player's full round via a clickthrough visual story like on Instagram. A photo of each hole at a particular week's host venue will be available on the app, and next year the photo will be replaced by drone flyover videos.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/Courses-Final.png

Fans, gamblers specifically, will be thrilled to find out they can now follow just one player or an entire group more closely than ever. Those who fancy themselves "three-ball" or "matchup" sharps can now lock in on one twosome or threesome and see the stats behind each shot the moment after they are struck. In order to follow three players at once previously, you had to favorite each one and open their scorecard separately. In the new app, you can open up the scorecard for an entire group and see how they stack up against each other shot-by-shot.

Player profiles are getting a new look, too, with the profile prominently featuring the player—so much so that a number of pros have already asked to reshoot their photos because they are much larger. More importantly, though, fans and players alike will be able to go in and quickly find past results, career-best FedEx Cup ranking, lowest-career round, last win and much more. A number of players have been given a chance to touch and feel the new technology, and Hanson says it already has the Max Homa seal of approval.

Instagram and Apple News heavily influenced the PGA Tour’s new app, along with the NBA app, which Scott Gutterman, PGA Tour SVP Digital Operations, says is the guiding point of what a sports app can and should be.

"We're pretty excited to get to the point where after the New Year, we'll be auto-generating player summaries and video for players that you've favorited," Gutterman said. "So if you've favorited Tony Finau, you'd be getting his outstanding first round in Houston—you'd get a 'story' version of his round automatically. We'll be able to do that for every player. For us, it's a combination of what we've seen going on in media, what we've seen going on in sports, and what are the other technologies that we know are emerging that we can leverage to help us create content for every one of our players."

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/221114-Stories-Final.png

The way the app launches when you first open it is, according to Hanson, "the thing we've all gravitated toward." Hanson has spent days and nights on this new version of the app and believes that's what people will love most. The other feature, at least from listening to the fans over the years, is how much faster it will be.

"You don't need to reinvent the leader board and scorecards," Hanson says. "You just need to make them accurate and faster, and that's what we've tried to do here. Really focus on the bread and butter of what we do and make it work better and make it more repeatable."

Back to the gamblers—next year, Hanson says fans will be able to follow on a "horizontal leader board" (rotate your phone sideways) specifically designed for those following from a betting or daily fantasy perspective. This will include a real-time strokes-gained leader board, a live play-by-play leader board and the ability to see where every player is on the course at a specific time.

Most importantly, the team behind the redesign is prepared to quickly respond with enhancements to both the app and website on demand. When Golf Twitter inevitably explodes over the first misstep, the issue will be resolved much faster than it would have in the past. "There's nothing people say on social media or a podcast that we don't hear, to be honest with you," Hanson says.

In the coming weeks and months, things will absolutely be said on social media and podcasts about the new version of the app, and Hanson and Co. will be able to listen to all of them and react accordingly. Speed and ease-of-use will remain paramount, and it sounds like the app will be great improved in each of those departments. So far, so good.

Australian team decided for Women’s PGA Cup

pga tour app download

The five women-strong team who will represent Australia in this year’s Women’s PGA Cup in Oregon in October has been decided today after two days of qualifying at Sandhurst Club.

Queenslander Katelyn Must and Victorian Jenna Hunter made sure they would be on the Australian team, both tied at the top of the qualifying at 5-under after the two rounds.

Grace Lennon from Victoria finished in third place, and previous Australian captain Lisa Jean, who coaches at Royal Canberra finished fourth after 36-holes.

Tied for fifth after today’s round, a playoff was needed to determine who would make up the final spot on the team between Sienna Voglis and Jessica Cook.

Heading back to the first tee of the Champions Course at Sandhurst, Cook pulled her tee-shot left, and struggled from there while Voglis held steady to secure the final spot.

Captain of Australia in the first edition of the Women’s PGA Cup in 2019, Lisa Jean was emotional post-round, relieved she will get another chance to represent her country.

“Full of emotion at the moment. I played pretty bad today, and I knew the scores coming up 18,” she said.

Playing in the final group, a par on 18 would have put Jean into the playoff with Cook and Voglis, a bogey or worse and she wouldn’t be on the team.

“I just stood up and smashed driver, had 105-metres slightly into the wind, clubbed up to 9-iron and hit a great shot to about a metre-and-a-half,” she said.

“I was pretty nervous over the putt, and then just finally hit a really good solid putt.

“I seemed to put it all together when it mattered. I guess all those years on the European Tour paid off!”

Jean and her team mates will be looking to lean on that tour experience again in October, with all of this year’s qualifiers having plenty of past playing experience past.

“We’ve all played on tour, yeah we’re club pros now but I think that being ex-tour players and competitive, we might go alright,” said Jean.

“We’ve got a good team this year, Sienna and I are the originals we call ourselves from the first team. Then Katelyn played in the second Cup two years ago, and Grace and Jenna are just great golfers.”

The Women’s PGA Cup will be held at Sunriver Resort in Oregon from October 1-5 later this year, with Australia up against teams from Canada, Great Britain & Ireland, South Africa, Sweden and the United States.

Tiger Woods gets $100m equity payment for staying loyal to PGA Tour

Rory McIlroy is in line to receive about $50m as the wait for an agreement with the Saudi Public Investment Fund goes on

Tiger Woods to receive $100m equity payment for staying loyal to PGA Tour

Tiger Woods has received an email from Sawgrass HQ informing him that he will receive up to $100 million in equity for staying loyal to the PGA Tour, with Rory McIlroy benefitting possibly to the tune of $50m for not joining LIV.

Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour commissioner, pressed the button on the ultra-personal messages that have been eagerly awaited since Strategic Sports Group – a consortium of US investors led by Liverpool FC owner Fenway Sports – pumped $1.5 billion into PGA Tour Enterprises , the new for-profit company, three months ago.

Approximately two thirds of that figure will be divvied up as equity to 193 golfers, although with $750 million to be split among the 36 superstars adjudged by the circuit to be most deserving the sums will be wildly different. Little wonder, therefore, that Monahan and his management team have been at pains to keep the breakdown confidential.

The Tour has already explained to its members that a primary factor in determining who obtains what is a metric called ‘career points’, which, as it says on the tin, awards marks for achievements on Tour for however long the players have been competing.

Other factors will be how they have fared in the Player Impact Program(PIP) – introduced three years ago largely to stave off the threat of the breakaway league – which rewards players who have had the largest impact on the Tour’s business: tickets, sponsorships, media consumption and fan engagement. Woods has already received $35 million in PIP payments, while McIlroy, who topped last year’s program, has pulled in $30.5 million from this source of income.

Inevitably, Woods, with 82 Tour titles, will be miles clear in the overall standings and insiders forecast he could secure as much as two times more than any other player in the sliding-scale system.

Phil Mickelson would have been second had he not jumped ship to LIV – the rebels are obviously excluded – although the new entity and this scheme would almost certainly not have come to fruition but for the formation of the Saudi-funded league and, in part, Mickelson’s role in the sporting civil war.

With three victories in the FedEx Cup – basically the PGA Tour money list – McIlroy will be Woods’s nearest pursuer and there will follow the likes of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, who will be due equity worth about $30 million.

Annual equity awards for other PGA players

Of course, with Jon Rahm landing an upfront fee of $450 million to defect late last year, all of these names would have acquired far, far more if they had succumbed to the Saudi offers. And this record payday does not mean money in the bank. The recipients will be told how many equity units they have been granted and what the fair market value is at this juncture. They will not be able to cash in immediately and then suddenly sign for LIV.

After four years, 50 per cent of their equity will be vested, with another 25 per cent two years later and the remaining amount two years after that. They will also have to fall in line with the rules, which as well as not decamping, involve meeting the minimum requirements for Tour membership and, if not, providing services such as sponsors meets and media appearances.

The lucky three dozen will rub their hands, but the next 64 players will also collect $75 million in equity between them. The next tranche will see a total of 57 players sharing $30 million and another $75 million will be carved up between the 36 players considered living legends who have retired. In each group, career points will be the overriding determinant. Going forward, the Tour has pledged to award equity of $100 million on an annual basis rewarding those such as second-year sensation Ludvig Aberg who are quickly picking up career points.

Naturally, the equity will grow, despite the Tour’s recent poor TV ratings as the dilution of talent because of the split takes its toll. Nobody is expecting it to fall. And if the Tour can agree a deal with the Saudi Public Investment Fund in the ongoing negotiations then the players hope their stocks could explode. If that remains uncertain then at least one thing appears assured: the current batch of professionals are not going poor anytime soon.

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy to get PGA Tour loyalty payouts

The pga tour is distributing equity to its players, past and present, who have helped build the tour and remained in its ranks..

The PGA Tour has begun notifying its players of the equity they will receive for remaining loyal to, and helping build, the tour in the face of a significant threat from LIV Golf and Saudi Arabia 's Public Investment Fund. While the exact amounts of shares in the PGA Tour each player will receive aren't disclosed, the pool from which the equity will be drawn is estimated at more than $900 million ... and it's reasonable to assume that the biggest names will draw the largest shares.

The Tour is, in effect, rewarding the players who remained in its ranks even as others jumped to LIV Golf. Players like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas will be eligible for the equity awards; players like Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau will not. Phil Mickelson, the most famous player in the world outside Woods, will not receive any equity, even though he's as responsible as almost any player for building the Tour into the force it is now — and he's also significantly responsible for both golf's schism and, in turn, the infusion of capital into the Tour that has made these equity awards even possible.

The funding from the equity will come from the recent $1.5 billion investment into the Tour from the Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of professional sports owners who have committed to investing up to $3 billion into the Tour's vision of professional golf.

The players are receiving shares of PGA Tour Enterprises, the for-profit arm of the PGA Tour. They've been ranked through a range of factors, including on-course performance — both historical and current — and contribution to the Tour's overall health and public perception. A total of 193 players will receive grants in some form, according to Golf.com .

However, just as all players aren't equal on the course, all 193 players won't receive equal distributions. The players will be divided into four separate groups as Golf.com notes . The first, comprising 36 players, will be the elite of the elite — 36 current players who have had the most success and the most impact on the game, as measured through significant tournaments won and publicity achieved. Woods is likely in this group, and likely to receive the lion's share of overall equity. McIlroy will be second behind him. This group will divide $750 million — more than 80 percent of the equity — because this is the group most likely to be poached by LIV Golf.

The second group of 64 players, designated as both reliable Tour pros and rapid risers — think, for example, Ludvig Åberg — will divide $75 million. A third group of 57 players will divide $30 million based on past success. The final group of 36 players is made up of past PGA Tour stars — Jack Nicklaus, for instance — who will divide up $75 million.

However, players won't just start seeing extra zeroes in their bank accounts. There are conditions; the initial grants will vest over an eight-year period, but not starting before four years. Players who, for example, leave for LIV Golf before the vesting period would forfeit their shares. Players must also remain active on Tour to receive their shares.

The remaining investment from SSG will be distributed in the form of equity starting in 2025, with $100 million per year going to top performers on the PGA Tour.

The entire equity distribution is based on the expectation that the value of the PGA Tour will continue to rise — not an unrealistic expectation given the continuing increase in values of professional sports franchises. But the Tour does face significant headwinds, most notably declining ratings and fan interest in the wake of the golf world's schism.

While the equity alone isn't enough to offset the money that players have made jumping to LIV — Rahm, for instance, was offered an estimated $450 million — it's designed to keep PGA Tour players both loyal to the Tour and thinking about more than just their own career. As the value of the Tour grows, the value of their equity stake grows, too. Will that be enough to force players to take a more direct interest in the growth of the Tour? Yet to be determined, but it's clear that the money is there for those who stay loyal to the Tour.

More than you could ask for

I never leave reviews as I forget half the time and sometimes I expect an app to be good… however, the PGA tour app goes above and beyond with what it offers. You can see live updates of your favourite golfers when they are playing and live scores. You can add these to your Home Screen so you never miss anything. I’ve only mentioned a fraction of what it offers and I’m still finding things that amaze me. Highly recommend.

A brilliant way to follow a golf tournament

Brilliant. All the information you want in a well designed interface. I love stepping through on a players round, hole by hole, viewing the overhead map and the shot distances. A big thank you to the app designers and a bigger thanks to everyone involved with the mammoth task of inputting the player scores and stats.
Great app. I especially like the option to follow each shot played; this is the best way to follow golf when unable to watch. One suggestion which would improve the app would be to enable the user to select their own time zone so that tee times are accurate to the users time zone.

Pga tour players learn how much loyalty is worth in new equity program.

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.

The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .

Recommended Videos

The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.

How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.

The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.

Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.

The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.

Jason Gore, the tour's chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It's really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.

Who Will Win the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro?

Six players looking for win number two at the ioa championship presented by morongo casino resort & spa.

The fans may be missing Nelly Korda this week, but it’s doubtful that her fellow competitors are. Fresh off her fifth straight win and second career major championship victory, Korda has decided to take a week off. Even though the No. 1 player in the world will be absent, the field is still terrific at the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro, as 144 competitors are ready to challenge one another for a share of a $3.75 million purse.

Seventeen of the top 25 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings are competing, and the top 65 and ties will play the weekend. The first-place finisher will take home $562,500, which is one of the largest non-major winner’s shares on Tour. Wilshire Country Club has hosted all five previous editions of this event, and the average winning score is 13-under. Wilshire is a classic design and a very tough test. Last year, Hannah Green won with a four-day total of 9-under as the layout played like a true major test.

The weather will be dry and moderately windy this week. Temperatures are forecasted in the mid-70s, and the par-71 layout measuring 6,447 yards will play much like it should. It’s fun to see any Tour compete at a classic venue, and this setting amongst the Hollywood Hills always gives fans tremendous theater. To predict the winner among this betting board, let’s take the traditional approach and look at the last two leaderboards.

The two most impactful strokes-gained categories that correlate to success around Wilshire Country Club are approach play and putting. The top 10 from the 2022 and 2023 leaderboards gained an average of four strokes with their iron game and flat stick. Since classic courses always seem to require great approach play, keep your eye on Minjee Lee, Alison Lee, Megan Khang and Rose Zhang. Minjee Lee won here in 2019 and has earned two more top-seven results at this property.

Putting always helps on greens like those at Wilshire. Classic complexes with putting surfaces averaging 5,000 square feet in size present small targets. This championship course is nestled in a hilly city neighborhood, so when you putt, experience with the breaks and green-reading skills are required. Mao Saigo, Hyo Joo Kim, Sarah Schmelzel and Sei Young Kim lead the field in putting ability. They should have an advantage this week, with Sei Young Kim finishing inside the top six here twice.

The par-71 layout only has three par 5s, and these holes are the key to scoring. Looking at those same two groups of top-10 finishers, each played the par 3s and 4s near par. Surviving those holes will only keep you near the rest of the competitors. To contend, you must take advantage of the par 5s.

Those same 23 athletes who finished in the last two top 10s averaged 4.66 strokes on the 5s. Patty Tavatanakit, Georgia Hall, Xiyu Lin and Charley Hull lead the field in par-5 scoring. In a race to 13- or 14-under, they will have a considerable scoring advantage.

The last characteristic this year’s champion should have is a successful scrambling percentage. Small greens, a layout with 127 bunkers and 13 holes where water comes into play will make players get creative around these tiny targets. The contenders from 2022 and 2023 were successful around the greens 64% of the time, a rate that is well above the Tour average.

In this group, Ayaka Furue, Lin, Khang and Hyo Joo Kim can really score from close range. They will need to because if they don’t hit greens in regulation like Haeran Ryu, Nasa Hataoka and Hull, their short game will be tested. It becomes pretty clear by looking at those past two leaderboards what an awesome exam Wilshire Country Club is. Favor those above who are in fine recent form.

Sei Young Kim has had a sensational spring and Haeran Ryu made a serious run at The Chevron Championship. Who are you picking?

After all, that’s the point. By selecting a couple of names, you create a connection to the action. It’s fun for me to know who’s on my list, so you should definitely write your own. Once you do, the entertainment on Sundays will draw you in like a great Hollywood ending, much like the golf will this week at the JM Eagle LA Championship.
