The best types of vacations to take with a baby

All-inclusive resort

best travel destinations with newborn

When you visit a baby-friendly all-inclusive resort , you don't have to stress over having enough cash, finding fun activities to keep your kid entertained or deciding where to eat every meal because it's all included in the cost of your vacation.

Many resorts even provide cribs, strollers and bottle warmers that you can borrow during your stay, so you can pack light and focus on carrying your baby instead of extra suitcases.

On top of being situated right on the beach (because what baby doesn't love to eat sand?), all-inclusive resorts have kids clubs, splash areas and playgrounds designed to keep your baby contently cooing until it's time to head home.

Where to go

best travel destinations with newborn

Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Port St. Lucie , Florida, is the only stateside location of the popular all-inclusive resort brand. Child care is available for an additional fee for babies between 4 and 23 months in the resort's Baby Club Med day care and you can request a baby welcome kit with a stroller, bathtub, bottle warmer, changing table and Pack 'n Play.

If you are looking for a luxury resort that's still baby-friendly, Mexico's Finest Playa Mujeres goes above and beyond what you'd expect. In addition to standard baby gear like a baby monitor and high chair, the resort offers a variety of natural homemade purees for babies. You can visit the kids club facilities with babies ages 0 to 2 to play with toys or swim in the kiddie pool, but you are required to stay with them at all times. Child care is only available for kids ages 3 and up.

What to bring

best travel destinations with newborn

Because the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping babies under 6 months of age out of direct sunlight, you'll want to pack items to protect them from the sun. Though most resorts provide beach chairs and umbrellas, you may also want to bring a few baby-specific beach items like a pop-up shade tent (they are great during nap time), a full-body swimsuit with SPF protection and a hat (that they probably won't keep on).

Baby-friendly hotel

best travel destinations with newborn

Most hotels don't go out of their way to accommodate families traveling with babies , but a select few have made it a priority to offer child care, welcome kits with baby amenities and spacious rooms that give babies the peace and quiet they need so that parents can have their own peace and quiet.

best travel destinations with newborn

Loews Regency New York is located in New York City just two blocks from Central Park. The Loews Loves Families program (offered at multiple locations) hooks families up with a guide to area activities and dining options, as well as amenities like baby bathtubs, cribs, baby-proofing gear and even stuffed animals. The hotel has 58 suites, some with kitchenettes, that have the space, convenience and privacy you need when traveling with a baby.

best travel destinations with newborn

Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya , 32 miles south of Cancun , has a top-notch complimentary kids club called Kimbo Kids Club, but until recently it was only available for kids ages 4 and up. With the introduction of Kimbo Baby — for kids ages 3 months to 4 years — even parents can steal a few hours for themselves while their baby is cared for by the resort's trained child care team. Rooms with terrace plunge pools give you and baby a private spot to splash in the shade.

City hotels especially can be noisy, which isn't much fun when you have an overtired baby on your hands . Pack a white noise machine to drown out the noise (pro tip: place the sound machine near the noise you are trying to drown out rather than near your baby). If you plan to spend some time at the hotel pool or on the beach, bring along a flotation device designed for babies. Many have detachable canopies for extra shade.

Your baby won't be tall enough for their first roller coaster for years, but there's still plenty of fun to be had at a theme park . And if you decide to take turns riding roller coasters without them, your baby will be none the wiser.

All kidding aside, theme parks have lots of perks for babies. They are noisy and colorful, which can keep babies occupied for a surprisingly long time (but if they don't like loud noises, you might want to pack some noise-canceling headphones).

Plus, everyone expects theme parks to be full of kids. If your baby has a meltdown or throws your popcorn bucket at a passerby, you'll be surrounded by other parents who have likely been in the same position and will probably brush it off.

We'd be remiss to leave Walt Disney World off a list of baby-friendly vacation spots. Even if you've been dozens of times, there's something magical about seeing it through your baby's eyes for the first time (when they are awake, at least). For maximum ease, stay at one of Disney's on-site hotels . They offer complimentary transportation to and from the parks and most have baby pools or splash pads available, as well. To preserve those precious first-visit memories, you can have an artist hand-cut your baby's silhouette portrait at Magic Kingdom or Disney Springs, or visit the Disney PhotoPass Studio at Disney Springs for a family portrait.

best travel destinations with newborn

Your baby probably still lacks the dexterity to build with Lego bricks, but that doesn't mean they are too young for Legoland California Resort . There are more than a dozen attractions with no height requirement, including sand pits where they can dig for dinosaur bones, a Duplo-themed interactive playground, a Coast Cruise boat ride and a Legoland Express train. There's also a convenient baby care center in the park where you can feed and change your baby in a cool, comfortable environment. An on-site hotel allows you to easily get back to your room for nap time or the inevitable change of clothes.

With so many theme parks on either the West Coast or in Central Florida, the temperatures can climb pretty high. Pack a fan designed to clip onto your stroller, sun protective clothing and some stylish baby sunglasses.

Mountain retreat

best travel destinations with newborn

Where better to test out a baby's developing senses than surrounded by nature? They can smell the fresh mountain air, touch leaves and pinecones (and most likely taste them, as well), listen to birds chirping in the trees and experience nature's majesty.

While babies are discovering the world around them, parents can escape the daily routine in a peaceful, relaxing setting. Bonus points if you book accommodations large enough to bring the grandparents along for a bit of built-in babysitting.

best travel destinations with newborn

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole in Teton Village, Wyoming, is a luxury mountain lodge resort less than 30 minutes from Grand Teton National Park . Rooms are cozy with a fireplace and furnished balcony with mountain views. Residence-style rooms have up to five bedrooms for multigenerational vacations. During your visit, you can swim in the heated outdoor pool, ride an aerial tram to the top of Rendezvous Peak and, in the winter, embark on a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snow.

best travel destinations with newborn

Hyatt Place Keystone in Keystone, Colorado, is a great starting point for your mountain adventures, even if your adventures include nothing more than sitting in the hot tub (or near it if you are on baby duty) and taking in the mountain views. Breakfast and coffee — the preferred wake-up call of parents everywhere — are included with your stay. Opt for a suite over a standard room and you'll enjoy a separate bedroom where you can lay the baby down while you gaze into each other's eyes (or, more likely, at the TV).

If you are planning a wintertime visit, you'll need to pack certain items to keep your baby bundled safely. Not many things in the world are cuter than a baby in a snowsuit, but most snowsuits aren't safe to use in a car seat. Another option is to use a car seat or stroller cover that keeps your baby warm without the bulk.

Bottom line

Vacationing with a new baby can feel overwhelming, but if you know where to go and what to bring along, you can use it as an opportunity to rest, recharge and bond with your baby — all while creating lifelong memories.

Mom Knows Best: 15 Best Family Vacations with Newborn Babies

There’s little in life more glorious than bringing a newborn child into the world, but sometimes those little ones make traveling more difficult than its worth. The good news?

It doesn’t have to be that way.

To make sure that all of you new parents can still get your family getaway on without a hitch, we put together a list of the best vacations for new parents with the help of moms who know where to go from experience. So without further adieu, here’s our mom-approved list of the best hotels for traveling with newborn and young children.

Orange Beach, Alabama

Having a baby doesn’t mean the beach vacations aren’t still an easy possibility, although choosing the right hotel does become more important. My son’s first beach vacation at six months old was made easier by choosing a place with a crib, beach umbrellas, and an indoor pool for more time in the shade: The Hilton Garden Inn . There are microwave and refrigerator in the rooms, which is perfect for bottles, baby food, and toddler snacks. An on-site restaurant offering room service is also available when you’re just too tired to head downstairs. Not to mention, Orange Beach, Alabama is a great place for families to enjoy some fun in the sun.  — Pamela, Pam Gann

Hilton Garden Inn Orange Beach

Carefree, arizona.

I would highly recommend Four Seasons Resort at Troon North for a fun and relaxing trip with a new baby. Four Seasons Scottsdale provided so many amenities for babies: comfortable baby crib and bedding, baby bib, diapers, baby wash, baby shampoo, baby powder, and even a cute baby bath toy. The resort also brought in an extra mini fridge just for us to have for milk and formula.

The restaurants at the resort are very family friendly. There were high chairs and food that was served in little kid plates with little silverware. Our baby had started to eat yogurt and fruit and the resort was incredibly accommodating, making a cute little breakfast with a baby spoon and all. The resort also had nice paved paths to walk on with a stroller. We took many long walks all around to see the cacti and mountain scenery. But the pools at Four Seasons Scottsdale are what made the trip! There’s a family pool at the resort with cabanas and umbrellas to keep baby out of the sun. There’s also a kids pool area that is so shallow that our baby and toddler could sit in it and splash and stand at the edge to play.

The icing on the cake? The concierge can help you schedule a babysitter so you can go on a date night.  — Courtney Byrne, The Chirping Moms

Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North

Carlsbad, california.

Our favorite week away from home with a new baby is at the Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort in Carlsbad, California. We’ve been visiting the Southern California beach resort for many years and it holds our favorite family vacation memories. Our oldest daughter has grown up spending every summer on the beach playing with boogie boards and sand toys provided by the resort. From the complimentary swim diapers at the pool to the easy walk to the beach, the Carlsbad Inn features everything you’ll need and want while traveling with a new baby.

The Inn has one and two bedroom condos, so baby can sleep soundly while your family is in another room enjoying a game night or movie. Complimentary pack and plays are available so you don’t need to pack your own. The spacious rooms are very accommodating if you end up bringing your entire playroom along as we did in our early days traveling with children. Family activities happen often in the courtyard and it’s a great place to meet other families traveling with children. Fire pits with a gorgeous view of the beach make it a nice place to wind down just before bedtime.  — Heather Riccobono, Brie Brie Blooms

Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort

Palm desert, california.

There are plenty of trips you can take with your significant other, but what about when traveling with a new baby? Or multiple children? Palm Desert, California is a perfect getaway to take your new family addition, a place that I took each of my children on their first vacation. With something for everyone, Palm Desert is the ideal place in California’s desert area to visit, especially during the Spring when temperatures typically remain lower than the summer months.

Book your stay at the Marriott Desert Springs hotel, in the heart of beautiful Palm Desert. This Marriott boasts a kid-friendly pool, cafes, restaurants, and large suites ideal for families traveling with small children that may need a separate sleeping area. If you decide to explore outside of the hotel, visit the Living Desert, which includes a zoo, and botanical gardens. For indoor activities in the warmer months, Marriott has a variety of fun classes for adults and tots in the recreation center on site, or try the Children’s Discovery Museum, with a large selection of hands-on activities for little tots.  — Lauren Olson, Sleep and the City

JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa

Clearwater beach, florida.

My husband and I have always been avid travelers and didn’t slow down for a minute when our son was born. Before moving permanently to Florida, our favorite place for a quick beach getaway was always the incredibly family-friendly Sheraton Sand Key Resort in Florida. The Sheraton is close to all the action in Clearwater Beach, but just far enough away to avoid the tourist crowds.

The huge private beach, right next to Sand Key Park, is the main attraction. It’s one of the widest and most beautiful beaches in the area. The hotel is packed with amenities that make life easy for families. Plenty of chairs at the pool, beach toys that the kids can borrow, a small playground, and a snack stand that dishes out kid-friendly food. The pool bar mixes up great drinks for Mom and Dad, too!

I love the little convenience store inside, where you can pick up snacks, diapers, milk, sunscreen, or anything else your little one needs. Plus, several fantastic restaurants are just a quick, stroller-friendly walk down the street. It’s the best place I know for a stress-free vacation with a new baby in tow.  — Nicole Malik, Delicious Everyday

Sheraton Sand Key Resort

Destin, florida.

Finding a resort that could accommodate our growing family has been so important to us throughout the last few years. Nestled right along the emerald coast of Destin, Florida,  Hilton Sandestin has been our go-to family destination for the past three years. We first visited when my daughter was five months old, and it was such a breeze!

Hilton Sandestin offers kids programs during the day and night, childcare services, and plenty of kid-friendly restaurants. (They even have suites with bunk beds.) There’s everything from cribs to pack and plays, so you can always request one of those if you aren’t wanting to lug around all of the gear. It’s truly a lifesaver. Plus, Hilton Sandestin is located right on the water so you have access to white sandy beaches, umbrellas, towels, and even their different indoor and outdoor swimming pools.  — Jessica Conner, Grace and Ford

Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort

Lake buena vista, florida.

During my daughter’s first year, we visited six states and two countries. But our most baby-friendly trip was to Walt Disney World and Disney’s Contemporary Resort . We didn’t even bring her car seat. They’re unnecessary (and often not allowed) on Walt Disney World transportation, including Disney’s Magical Express free airport shuttle for hotel guests.

At Disney’s Contemporary Resort, rooms are large and baby-friendly. Furniture and ledges have rounded corners, most electrical outlets are out of reach, loose items are minimal, and bathrooms are big enough to fit the hotel Pack ’n Play. My daughter loved crawling around the pool’s splash zone, and the hotel is just one monorail stop from the Magic Kingdom. It was easy to pop in and out of our room for naptime. At the Magic Kingdom, baby-friendly attractions like It’s A Small World, Enchanted Tales With Belle, Prince Charming Regal Carousel, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh mesmerized my daughter. She giggled meeting Disney Princesses like Cinderella and Ariel and danced during street parties and parades.

Adults can take turns riding attractions and watching the baby without having to wait in line twice. My family took turns riding Avatar Flight of Passage and Expedition Everest while my daughter napped in her stroller. Plus, all Walt Disney World theme parks have a Baby Care Center equipped with a private nursing room with rocking chairs; feeding area with high chairs; kitchen with microwave, oven, and sink; changing room; and shop offering all the baby essentials. Best of all, children under three don’t need park tickets.  — Karla Bruning, Run Karla Run

Disney's Contemporary Resort

Honolulu, hawaii.

Known as the first lady of Waikiki, the Moana Surfrider was built in 1901 and was the very first hotel built on the beautiful shores of what is possibly the most iconic beach in the United States — Waikiki Beach. This historic, luxury hotel is the perfect getaway for new parents bringing a baby on vacation. The Moana Surfrider’s relaxed vintage vibe and historic charm are enough to satisfy any guest, but the atmosphere is perfect for a post-baby-moon, with rocking chairs lining the porch overlooking the ocean, an oceanside world-class spa, and fine dining.

Though you may not want to leave once you arrive, the location of the Moana Surfrider is perfect for getting around Waikiki, located within walking distance from shops and parks, and just steps from the beautiful turquoise waters of Waikiki. Long walks on the beach with a baby who doesn’t understand time zones is a great way to spend an early morning or a late night. We loved staying here and enjoyed the calming atmosphere without feeling pressure to see all the sites.  — Vanessa Hunt, Meraki Mother

Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, Waikiki Beach

Boise, idaho.

We took trips with both our sons when they were under two months old, and it’s totally doable. I recommend choosing a destination where most of the activities you’re interested in are baby-friendly. No roller coasters or scuba diving (sorry!), but you can still go for a hike with a baby carrier, or explore a new city. We took our son to Boise when he was a newborn and had a blast staying at the Boise Guest House .

Our suite had a private entrance and full kitchen, which made us feel really comfortable on our first trip as new parents. We weren’t worried about every little cry annoying the room next door, and we had a kitchen for washing bottles. We could also walk right out our door and be in historic downtown Boise, instead of wrangling a stroller into an elevator with other guests.  — Aileen Allen, At Home In Love

Cancún, mexico.

Many people may tell you that once you have a child, life as you know it is over. Say goodbye to nights out with your friends, treating yourself or traveling. As someone who has just come back from Cancun with all my children, including a three-month-old, I disagree with that sentiment.

GR Caribe by Solaris was the perfect place to take kids, especially a new baby. Once you walk through those all-inclusive resort doors, all worrying, planning and obligations fly away. We stayed at the resort for eight days, and between their multiple daily activities for adults and kids and numerous restaurants, we never got bored or felt the need to leave the resort.

The GR Caribe is ideal for new parents because they offer top-notch accommodations, even providing emergency diapers when needed. I was able to lay poolside for hours with my little one, nursing, napping, even while I watched my other kids play away in the pool or run to the outdoor food hut for a fresh slice of pizza. I couldn’t have asked for a more relaxing postpartum adventure with my new little guy. We got to bond on a level I don’t think I could have experienced at home.  — Amber Brault, Dazzling Daily Deals

Gr Caribe By Solaris Deluxe All Inclusive Resort

Portsmouth, new hampshire.

We have been traveling with our daughter since she turned two months old, starting with a destination close to home just in case we needed to get back. Portsmouth, New Hampshire is a baby-friendly city, and Wentworth by the Sea  was extremely accommodating. They gave us a room set slightly apart, which made us more comfortable in knowing that we wouldn’t be disturbing anyone’s sleep if our little one was up all night. None of the restaurants we walked into batted an eye at seeing a tiny baby in a car seat — they mostly just gave us a larger booth so we could set her next to us!  — Alyssa Loring, Feathers and Stripes

Wentworth by the Sea, A Marriott Hotel & Spa

Cannon, oregon.

Inn at Cannon Beach  was the ideal spot for our first summer getaway with a newborn and toddler in town. This little haven, just steps from the beach, embraces the comfortable beach vibe with a wood exterior and family-friendly amenities that make traveling with a newborn easy to do. During our stay, the kitchenette made late-night feedings a breeze, and early morning breakfasts for our older son a snap, especially when mom and dad were still fumbling around to find the coffee maker in a sleep-deprived state.

The town was a quick drive, where we could find great coffee, delicious crepes and all the seafood we craved. Haystack Rock, the symbol of Cannon Beach, and our main reason for visiting (the 1980s classic film Goonies was filmed here) was just steps outside the door, making for the perfect backdrop to our first portraits as a family of four.  — Keryn Means, Walking On Travels

Inn at Cannon Beach

Sevierville, tennessee.

My family has visited The Resort at Governor’s Crossing for many years. The Resort is amazing because you can get a hotel style room, a suite, and even a two-bedroom suite. You’re close to great restaurants (and shopping!), but it’s great to have a place for nap times and a space to unwind after a fun-filled day. I love being able to bring our own food and having basically an apartment to stay in.

When my daughter was a few months old, we visited The Resort at Governor’s Crossing and the entire family had a blast. My son was able to play in the outdoor water park area with my husband, where I could watch him from under an umbrella with my infant daughter. (I was even able to get into the water with her for short periods.)

The indoor and outdoor water parks are so family-friendly with different areas for a variety of ages or swim skill levels. The staff at The Resort at Governor’s Crossing are always helpful and accommodating and during the summer months, there is almost always something going on in the evenings. Family-friendly movies by the pool are a favorite.  — Jaime McKee, Love Jaime

The Resort at Governor's Crossing

Cedar creek, texas.

Hyatt Regency Lost Pines was the perfect place to bring our one-year-daughter on vacation. They have a turfed green space for playing (great for crawlers), a splash pad (fun for early walkers), and a beach area complete with sand at the pool.

Along the lazy river, they have tubes with bottoms in them so our daughter could float right alongside us. Most importantly, this is a family-friendly resort where babies are welcomed. The front desk was quick to offer a crib for our room, and the on-site restaurants were more than accommodating. They even have quiet hours between 9 p.m.- 7 a.m. The best part about Lost Pines, though, is that you don’t have to leave the property at all during your stay, and a few days without having to put a one-year-old in a car seat is a vacation in itself.  – – Janelle Rendon, Route to Health and Wealth

Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort & Spa

Virginia beach, virginia.

When looking for an entertaining family getaway that keeps everyone excited, the Turtle Cay Resort in Virginia Beach has new families covered. (I’ve stayed there for the past 15 years and counting.)

From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted by friendly staff members with refreshments and a schedule of free daily activities for young kids. You’ll probably want to spend most days relaxing by the pools, which includes mini waterfalls, two hot tubs, one pool for older kids and a huge baby pool with a walk-in shallow area — perfect for new parents to introduce newborns to the water. There are movie nights at the pool just for kids while you relax in the hot tub or one of you sneaks away to cook up dinner in your suite. It’s a place to build lasting family memories, and with the beach a block away, you’ll never want to leave  — Danielle Fahrenkrug, Delightful Mom Food

Not-So-Baby- and Toddler-Friendly Vacations To Avoid (for Now)

These vacation options might sound fun at first, but trust us, these spots don’t make the list of best places to vacation with a baby. Consider waiting to head to these destinations until your infant or tot is older.

Somewhere more than six hours away

A quick plane ride will likely be okay—baby should be good for a short time, but if not, you’ll be off the plane in just a couple of hours. Extend the plane ride over the span of several meals or nap times, though, and you could be asking for trouble.

Bugs, bears and the whims of Mother Nature? That doesn’t exactly sound like the best baby-friendly vacation destination. In fact, a camping trip will probably just mean a ton of work and creativity on your part. Think about the logistics of kid-friendly activities, where to put stinky diapers and how in the world you’re going to fit a portable crib in your tent. Unless you’re super-outdoorsy, when you go on vacation with baby, you want amenities and something a bit more relaxing.

Bed-and-breakfasts

Sure, B&Bs were a perfect getaway when it was just you and your partner, but now that you’re planning a vacation with your little one in tow, it probably won’t work. You’ll constantly worry that baby’s cries are waking (or annoying) everyone in the house. And you might not be able to borrow baby gear like a crib or high chair or have access to other baby-friendly amenities a larger hotel might offer.

How We Chose the Best Family-Friendly Vacations

We get it—planning a family-friendly vacation isn’t always a breeze. To streamline your experience, we browsed dozens of vacation types and destinations, so you don’t have to spend hours scrolling online. We did this by considering a list of criteria when choosing which trips to feature in our article, including value, accessibility and baby- and toddler-friendly amenities.

Perfect places to travel with your baby

Jul 25, 2019 • 5 min read

Taking your baby away for the first time is a big milestone and choosing the right destination is key to making the trip a success. Unless you are super adventurous you will probably want somewhere that is neither too hot nor too cold, has a pretty good healthcare infrastructure and a good range of relaxed activities with relatively little travel involved. To help, we’ve pulled together eight destinations for your infant’s bucket list. For general tips, have a look at our article on travelling with your baby .

Mallorca, Spain

Partying in Magaluf probably won’t be on your agenda with a small baby but the north of the island has pretty market towns with promenades to push the stroller along, beautiful beaches for your bundle of joy to discover a love of sand and restaurants which really welcome babies. There’s also a fantastic foodie culture so you can take advantage of nap time and enjoy feeling like a grown adult again.

A woman in a sunhat, vest and shorts sits on a swing that hangs over the beach from a large leaning palm tree; to her right are tropical waters and above a vibrant blue sky dotted with puffy white clouds

Ko Samui, Thailand

A perennial favourite whatever stage in life you are at, Ko Samui ’s popularity may be a detractor for some but it does means that you can find pretty much everything you need for travelling with a baby: nappies, formula, restaurants with high chairs, a range of family-friendly accommodation options and so on. Spending time at the beach is an obvious choice with an infant but when you need a break the temples and gardens can be surprisingly good for little kids (offering shade and new things to look at). But the best reason to take your baby to Ko Samui is the warm Thai welcome you will get wherever you go.

Norfolk, England

The east of England is known for being flat, making it a very suitable place if you have a stroller and like to walk while your baby sleeps. Being a bit further away from London but still a relatively quick drive, Norfolk offers good value in terms of accommodation and dining costs, and it has a relaxed easy-going vibe and plenty to keep parents of the very young happy. Think sandy beaches, sweet coastal towns, National Trust properties , and if your little one has become a walking one then a trip to the magical Bewilderwood is a must.

Tuscany, Italy

Like the Thais, Italians LOVE babies and believe us it’s so nice to be on holiday somewhere with a culture that embraces and adores your precious bundle. Toddling infants are welcomed at historical sites, and where better for that first lick of gelato or nibble of pizza. But why Tuscany particularly? With a babe in arms you can easily explore the museums and galleries of Florence and Pisa , the hilltop towns are perfect places to people watch with a coffee and a small person, and yes there are beaches if you want them. Stay on a working farm and enjoy watching your baby interact with animals too.

A thatched-roofed tropical bar sits beneath hulking palms on a beach at Cozumel island. The bar is painted bright yellow and red with green and white plastic chairs. It's partly obscured by green palm trees and sits on a white-sand beach with a jewel-blue sea in the background.

Quintana Roo, Mexico

Easily accessible with plenty of baby-friendly flight times and also pretty affordable due to the large number of options available, Quintana Roo is home to both  Cancún and Mexico’s Caribbean coast and welcomes families with open arms. There are baby-friendly beaches, plenty of family accommodation options (including all inclusive resorts with babysitting and all chores taken care of if you want to properly switch off) and opportunities for fun away from making sandcastles, exploring ruins or watching wildlife.

Sunshine Coast, Australia

With all the delights of Queensland packed into one easily-navigated area, the Sunshine Coast is a lovely place to take your baby. It’s warm without being too hot, there are loads of things to do whether you want to wander round markets, take the pram along a beachside path or hang out in the pool, and it has a reputation for some of the best family-friendly places to stay in Oz. For a treat, Noosa Heads is an upmarket town with a relaxed vibe, and easy access to the rainforest for walks with a baby in a carrier if you’ve had enough of the sand and sea.

Visitors riding the swan boats at the Boston Public Garden on a sunny summer day; in the background, behind the tree-lined waterway are a couple of glass skyscrapers poking up into a blue sky dotted with a few whispy white clouds; baby travel

Boston, USA

A city break might seem like an odd idea for new parents but while a baby still sleeps a lot there’s chance to visit that gallery or museum you’ve always wanted to, linger over a coffee as you people watch and even have dinner at adult’s dinner time and not 5pm. Boston is a great choice because it also offers plenty for the very little person, with lots of playgrounds to explore and fountains to frolic in as well as museums that specifically cater to the very small. Check out the Children’s Museum , the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium for starters. And then plan to bring your son or daughter back when they are school age too!

Campervan on road in Tongariro National Park, with volcanic peak (with its rocky summit cloaked in a petite cloud, in background). Free campsites and having all your baby's gear at hand in a campervan makes New Zealand a great destination for travel with your baby.

New Zealand (by camper van)

If New Zealand has always been on your travel wishlist, then maternity or paternity leave can be a great opportunity to do a longer trip and visit a part of the world you’ve always wanted to. While you have to be careful with the amount of time your baby spends in the car seat, hiring a camper van allows you to keep exploring without having to unpack all the baby paraphernalia all the time. The freedom of the open road combined with the buzz of exploring somewhere in your new family unit is the stuff family memories are made of. Your baby might not remember the details as they get older but the fact you did it will always be part of their travel history. And as it's New Zealand, free camping is also an option .

Traveling With an Infant: 9 Best Places to Take Your Baby

Have a newborn in the family? Don’t turn in your passport quite yet. Millennial parents are traveling with gusto with their littles, and not just to grandma’s house. According to research firm D.K. Shifflet & Associates, 62% of new American parents have taken an international trip with kiddos under five. These nine family-friendly destinations have already figured out this little secret: babies make great travel companions—as long as you have enough diapers.

San Antonio, Texas

The Alamo City has long been known for its family-friendly draws, from its excellent zoo and charming children’s train to the state-of-the-art DoSeum , where some of the hands-on, sensory exhibits are designed with infants in mind. Stay in the Pearl Brewery District (where a historic brew complex has been converted into an urban barrio), where chef-owned restaurants, boutiques, and even a popular splash pad are all within walking distance. The Pearl’s crown jewel is Hotel Emma , which takes care of its littlest guests with cribs and Netherlands-based Naif baby products. While the property’s Sternewirth Tavern is sophisticated, former brew tanks converted into seating nooks are ideal spots for parents to tuck away for a cocktail with a baby in tow. Outside of town, JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa feels like a world of its own thanks to its 1,002 guest quarters—many of which have multi-room layouts, ideal for families—restaurants, and golf courses spread out over 600 acres. Babes can splash around with mom in the water park’s young children’s pool (only two feet deep) and retire to shaded cabanas, where fridges keep baby bottles cool.

Lincoln memorial in Washington DC

Washington, D.C.

Whether you’re introducing your half pints to capital sights or exploring the city’s leafy neighborhoods, Washington is an easy getaway with a baby. The D.C. Metro links the city’s downtown and is clean and easy to navigate, not to mention there are miles of hike and bike trails along the Potomac River that make for lovely afternoon strolls with napping tikes. The Willard InterContinental Washington , which welcomes nearly 12,000 children every year, has a dedicated kids concierge who contacts families before arrival to ensure guest rooms (some of the largest in the city) are equipped with the things you need most, from microwaves for warming bottles to extra diapers and pails. While Georgetown Suites is less hands-on, all of its rooms come with kitchens and bathtubs, both of which are mighty handy when traveling with babies. High chairs and cribs are also available. Visit the Georgetown Waterfront Park, where you can feed ducks and splash in a sprinkler-like fountain, before grabbing a stylish souvenir—a little cashmere sweater, perhaps, or a plush baby pea coat—at Le Birdies Boutique .

Aerial view of Franklyn D. Resort & Spa

This Caribbean island, which has direct flights from dozens of U.S. cities, has several resorts that keep families with tiny first-timers in mind. Take the Franklyn D. Resort & Spa , located on the island’s northern coastline, which not only has a kids club for toddlers but also complimentary nanny services . These childcare experts—all of which are CPR trained—greet families upon arrival, lend an extra hand at the beach and pool, and take care of babies and kids while moms and dads go snorkeling or play golf (you know, take a vacation of their own). The property’s 78 one- to three-bedroom suites also have separate living and dining areas as well as balconies or garden terraces. Further west, you’ll find Round Hill Hotel and Villas , a storied 110-acre resort where your baby will join a list of past guests that includes Paul McCartney and Ralph Lauren. Guests can book a fully staffed villa or one of 36 hotel guest rooms; family specialists reach out to ensure your family needs (cribs, high chairs, nanny and babysitting services) are met—and likely exceeded.  Along with pools and tennis courts, the property has a lush, tree-lined beach.

Santa Marta Lighthouse in Cascais, Portugal

Cascais, Portugal

Yes, the Iberian Peninsula is farther flung, but here’s a little secret: the younger your baby, the easier he/she is likely to be on the plane. (It’s when they start celebrating major milestones—crawling, walking, climbing—that things get hard.) Portugal is an ideal landing pad thanks to its family-friendly locals, easy-to-navigate roads, and beautiful cities and coastlines. Make the Cascais region—located 25 miles outside of capital city Lisbon, it’s nicknamed the Portuguese Riviera—your landing pad. Here, you can throw on the Ergobaby and explore Carcaevlos Beach’s golden sands or Sintra-Cascais Natural Park , known for its dramatic cliffs and Atlantic views. As for your accommodations, look no further than Martinhal Cascais , a hotel and collection of villas that marries sophistication with family travel. While rooms are fresh and chic, they’re also equipped with conveniences like bottle sterilizers, baby gates, and door handle protectors. The property’s restaurants also have playscapes, and chefs make fruit and veggie purees daily.

Toronto skyline at night

Toronto, Canada

Don’t overlook cities when traveling with babies. In many ways, kiddos under a year are the easiest urban companions. You can wear them in the Bjorn, and they often sleep on the go. The Queen City is particularly effortless with littles. It’s clean, easy to get around, and oh-so friendly (this is Canada, after all). Green spaces such as Trinity Bellwoods and High Park are dotted with playgrounds, stroller-friendly pathways, and splash pads. A ferry ride to Central Island is also a must for its waterfront trails, old-fashioned amusement park, and quiet lake beaches. Book a room at Hotel X , located on the Lake Ontario waterfront, for its family-friendly amenities (cribs, bath products, and pint-sized robes and slippers) as well as children’s books and a toy gift upon arrival. And large, intuitive room layouts means moms and dads don’t have to huddle in the bathroom when babies bed down at 6:30 PM. Instead, they can sip vino in a separate living room, enjoying uninterrupted views of the CN Tower from floor-to-ceiling windows.

Fireworks display in Seaside, FL

Seaside, Florida

Craving sun and sand? It’s hard to beat the Sunshine State when it comes to family-friendly beaches in Miami, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and beyond. When traveling with a baby, however, consider the Emerald Coast. A string of relaxed resorts and laid-back beach communities line the coastline’s main thoroughfare, Highway 30A, including our pick, Seaside. You might recognize the idyllic village from the movie The Truman Show : Here, pastel houses are framed by white picket fences and manicured streets see more strollers than cars. Restaurants such as the Shrimp Shack  overlook its quiet beaches, which are ideal for first-time swimmers thanks to their tranquil turquoise waters. Pro parent tip: when traveling with a baby to the beach, consider bringing a dock-a-tot or empty baby pool. As much as your beach babe might love a dip in the water, sand—which eventually ends up in their eyes—can also be a big irritant.

Dreamy mountain-scape with cotton candy skies and a man skiing in Vail, Colorado

Vail, Colorado

Just because you’ve got a tiny sidekick doesn’t mean you have to give up on winter sports, especially when you’re traveling to Vail . The ski resort offers childcare for infants starting at two months, meaning you can hit the slopes or snowshoe the trails. Vail also has free public transportation throughout town as well as thoughtfully designed playgrounds. Stay at the  Antlers at Vail hotel, located in Vail’s family-friendly Lionshead neighborhood just steps from the Eagle Bahn Gondola, whose all-condominium accommodations mean you can spread out and take advantage of a kitchen—there’s also a free shuttle to the grocery store—but still enjoy white-glove service. Call ahead to pre-arrange for anything from baby monitors to bottle warmers and even car seats. And for breast-feeding moms, they’re no cozier corner than by the in-room fireplace.

Beltane Ranch

Sonoma, California

Believe it or not, the Golden State’s wine country is an ideal getaway with a baby. There’s something restful and unhurried about its farmlands and outdoor draws. This is especially true in Sonoma, thanks to its inviting towns and unpretentious vineyards. At Iron Horse , where you can sip Brut while your baby naps, the atmosphere is casual and agricultural—a welcome surprise for a vineyard whose wines ended up in President Reagan’s White House. Back in Healdsburg, grab an early dinner at Shed , a restaurant and artisan shop that’s lively enough to lull your babe to sleep. If you’d like to wake up among the vines, stay at Beltane Ranch —book one of the stand-alone cottages for additional space and privacy—where you can request a family picnic overlooking olive orchards. Also make a day trip to Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve  and introduce your infant to centuries-old trees.

Sunset on the beach in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Family comes first in Mexico, and traveling to the country with a baby makes you feel nothing short of a celebrity. It’s not uncommon to be stopped—and your baby admired —whether you’re walking through zocalos , or city squares, or strolling down waterfront boardwalks. At the  Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit  in Puerto Vallarta, an oceanfront all-inclusive, the VIB (Very Important Baby) treatment is taken to another level. Little tikes are greeted with Mexican toys, pool floats, and even baby clothes. Take your wee one to the spa for his or her first haircut, which is celebrated with a certificate and followed by a massage. At mealtime, babies can pair their usual breast milk or formula with freshly made bowls of pio pio purée (chicken breast, carrots, zucchini), so don’t be surprised if their first words are mas, por favor.

A Round Up of the Best Baby-Friendly Vacations

best travel destinations with newborn

Written by:

Barbara mighdoll, why travel with your baby.

Embarking on a journey with your baby may seem overwhelming the first time, from organizing the necessary baby essentials to confirming the availability of a crib at your destination – it can be a lot to manage! However, traveling with your baby can be one of the easiest opportunities to explore the world with a little one in tow. In fact, I put together a step-by-step guide on how to bring your baby on an international adventure.

These early-life adventures play a crucial part in their cognitive development as they engage with unfamiliar surroundings, people, and scenes. The stimulation of your baby's curiosity and observational skills not only fosters growth but also creates shared experiences that deepen your family bond.

Choosing the best vacation spots with your baby begins with considering their age, and your family’s overall comfort. Some families may prefer tranquil beach locations, while others might be drawn to bustling city breaks, sightseeing, or specific amenities. This guide to the best baby-friendly vacations will provide you with a range of options to suit your unique family dynamic.

The Benefits of Introducing Your Baby to Travel Early

When can you start traveling with a baby, considering climate and safety, distance and travel time, importance of baby facilities, accessibility to healthcare, the beaches & breweries of san diego, california, the natural beauty of olympic national park, washington, the quaint resort town of sunriver, oregon, the cultural richness of tuscany, italy, the laid back wine country of paso robles, california, the vibrant life of lisbon, portugal, the calm vibes of kauai, hawaii, the walkable city of vancouver, canada, this gourmet all-inclusive resort in cancun, mexico, what should you know before taking your baby on a vacation.

Traveling with your little one can have some pretty awesome perks. Not only does it expose them to different cultures, places, and experiences, but it also plays a big role in their cognitive and emotional development. Here are a few additional benefits:

  • Boosts adaptability: Being in new environments can help your baby become adaptable and comfortable with change, which is a valuable life skill.
  • Promotes language skills: Exposure to different languages, even if your baby can't understand them yet, can enhance their future language learning potential.
  • Builds stronger family bonds: Traveling together as a family creates shared memories and experiences that can strengthen your bond.
  • Better sleep: Believe it or not, babies sometimes sleep better when they've had a stimulating day, and what could be more stimulating than exploring a new location? Sleep is often one of the biggest reasons parents are hesitant to travel with their little ones, so here is a resource on how to adjust your baby to time change .

Text image listing the benefits of introducing your baby to travel early

Figure out the ideal dates for your trip based on when you expect your baby to be no less than 8 weeks old. Most pediatricians recommend waiting until your baby is at least 2 to 3 months old since your baby’s immune system is still developing. Check with your pediatrician for additional guidance before traveling.

We took Willow abroad to Italy at 8 weeks old… and she proceeded to fly every month by the time she was 1 year old, stacking up 26 flights in total! Caden, however, hadn’t traveled until 13 months because of COVID.

Selecting the Perfect Destination for Your Baby's First Trip

When it comes to choosing the perfect destination for your first trip with your baby, there are a few important things to keep in mind.

First, take into account the climate of your chosen destination. You don't want to travel during monsoon season or potential winter storms. Always check the expected weather conditions and ensure you pack suitable clothing and supplies to keep your baby comfortable.

Safety is another crucial aspect that shouldn't be overlooked. Consider factors such as the country's healthcare system, proximity to medical facilities, and availability of baby essentials. For example, a remote vacation spot could be idyllic, but it may not be practical if it's miles away from the nearest hospital or store to buy baby food.

Travel distances and time have a big impact on how comfortable and enjoyable vacations with babies can be. Long and tiring journeys can be really stressful for both babies and parents. Before choosing your destination, consider the duration of the travel. Is it a short-haul road trip or a long international flight away? Will there be a time-zone change that might disrupt your baby’s routine?

Not all accommodations are created equal. Look for places that offer baby gear such as a crib, a kitchenette for preparing baby food, and a bathtub suitable for babies. Some places go the extra mile to ensure your baby's comfort by providing baby monitors, bottle warmers, high chairs, and even babysitting services.

When planning vacations with babies, it's super important to consider the accessibility to healthcare facilities. No matter how much you prepare, emergencies can happen, and having quick access to reliable healthcare services can make all the difference. Research the proximity of your planned accommodation to local hospitals, clinics, or healthcare centers. Also, if your baby has specific health needs, ensure that there are nearby pharmacies that stock any necessary medication.

9 Baby-Friendly Vacation Spots

Vacation Spots

Where to Stay: Beach Terrance

Beach Terrace was originally developed as an apartment building, which explains its oversized room accomodations. It’s beachfront views and location can’t be beat in Carlsbad, a more low-key less populated area of San Diego. It’s very close to legoland if you have an older toddler or younger child. The outdoor pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean is the perfect place to post-up and snuggle with your baby for a relaxing afternoon. Your stay includes a light complimentary breakfast, perfect for a quick bite and big cup of coffee by the ocean.

San Diego is a delightful destination to visit year-round, but for a vacation with your baby, you might want to consider the Spring (March to May) or Fall (September to November) seasons. During these periods, the weather is agreeably mild and perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

Why We Love It

In addition to the year-round sunny climate, San Diego offers many interactive, safe activities to do as a family. Public facilities are also well-equipped with baby-changing stations, nursing rooms, plus San Diego’s dining scene is family-friendly too. San Diego’s laid-back atmosphere is ideal for families that prefer a slower pace, providing ample opportunities for leisurely stroller strolls, relaxed picnics in the park, or peaceful beach days.

Barbara and Jason with their son in Olympic National Park

Where to Stay: Kalaloch Lodge

Nestled on the edge of Olympic National Park, Kalaloch Lodge has stunning ocean views and is surrounded by nature. It’s definitely a more rustic vibe than I usually recommend, but that’s the trade-off you make for being surrounded by nature in the actual national park. The lodge offers a variety of family-friendly amenities such as easy-access hiking, birdwatching, and nature trails. There's ample space for stroller walks and the calming and soothing atmosphere is perfect for those much-needed afternoon naps!

The best time to visit Olympic National Park is during the summer months, typically from June to September when the weather is warm and sunny. This is the time when the park's main attractions, such as the Hoh Rain Forest and Hurricane Ridge, are fully accessible and the extended daylight hours provide more time for exploration.

Olympic National Park is an ideal spot for a baby-friendly vacation. It offers a serene setting, endless options for gentle stroller walks, and is more affordable for families compared to other destinations. National parks provide opportunities to connect with nature, engage in meaningful activities, and create lasting memories in an awe-inspiring and educational environment.

Barbara and Jason with their son in Oregon

Where to Stay: The Sunriver Resort

We took Caden here at 10 weeks old. It was our first big adventure as a family, and our first real outing during COVID. The Sunriver Resort is an all-encompassing resort that offers suites complete with kitchens, cozy fireplaces, comfy patios amongst the woods and other amenities that are perfect for accommodating you and your baby's needs. Not only do they provide cribs upon request, but the resort also offers a range of family-friendly activities. There's an aquatic center, bike and stroller-friendly walking path, and family-friendly dining options.

The best time to visit would be during the summer months, from June to September, when the weather is warm, and all of the resort's outdoor activities are in full swing. We went middle of August and it was perfect.

Sunriver, Oregon, stands out as a top baby-friendly destination because it's a place where a family can truly unwind. Beyond its scenic beauty, this resort town is a haven of convenience for parents and their little ones. The town's pedestrian-friendly design guarantees secure strolls with your baby, and numerous parks and green areas offer abundant opportunities for outdoor play.

Where to Stay: Okay there are SO MANY options since the region of Tuscany is absolutely massive.

Option 1: if you are looking for a more full-service hotel-like experience –  castelfalfi.

Castelfalfi offers various accommodations, including rooms, suites, and apartments and also has family rooms specifically designed for guests with children. For older babies and toddlers, the resort provides organized children's programs and activities, such as a supervised kids' club with games, arts and crafts, and age-appropriate entertainment. Castelfalfi is situated on a large estate with many areas to explore with a stroller. Location wise, its very very north Tuscany, perfect if you are looking for a short drive to do day trips to Florence, Siena and Pisa.

Option 2: If you are looking for a more traditional agriturismo experience – Agriturismo La Bruciata

We booked a 3 bedroom apartment on our trip to Tuscany when we traveled with our 2 year old, 2 month old and au pair. We loved the family vibes of this agriturismo, from the luscious lawn for all the children to gather and play games, to the family style dinners and breakfasts, to the on-site garden ready for tomato picking to the little playgrounds and multiple pools for just enough privacy. The location right outside of Montepulciano couldn’t be more perfect or central to explore all the Tuscany countryside.

The best time to visit Tuscany, particularly when you're vacationing with babies, is during the months of April to June and September to October. During these months, the weather is typically mild and pleasant. That said, we went in the hottest month of August and still had an enjoyable time.

Tuscany reserves such a special place in my heart since we traveled there while on parental leave for a few weeks after Willow was born . The region boasts a myriad of child-friendly attractions such as outdoor playgrounds, farmsteads and delightful ice-cream shops. What sets Tuscany apart is its warm and welcoming local community that values family and children and the temperate weather, making it an ideal family vacation spot.

Barbara, Jason and their son in California

Where to Stay: The Allegretto Vineyard Resort

This beautiful hotel embraces family life and caters to the needs of the littlest guests. Spacious rooms and suites with kitchenettes make settling in a breeze, and the resort offers a range of amenities to keep your baby comfortable, such as cribs, high chairs, and babysitting services upon request. The resort's sprawling grounds offer plenty of space for stroller walks, and there's a heated pool that's perfect for a fun family splash.

Consider Spring (April to June) or Fall (September to November) because these periods offer milder temperatures, ideal for outdoor activities and vineyard visits with your little one. We took Caden when he was 4 months old at the end of September and the weather was perfect. Bonus: both seasons provide a more relaxed atmosphere since they're less crowded than the busier summer months.

Paso Robles is known for its welcoming atmosphere and plenty of family-friendly attractions, such as beautiful parks perfect for picnics and a large selection of child-friendly restaurants and cafes. The city is also home to several farms that offer interactive animal encounters, a unique way of keeping your baby entertained.

Where to Stay: Martinhal Chiado Family Suites

Martinhal Chiado offers a luxury travel experience for families, ensuring it is well-suited for those with children of all ages. The hotel provides baby concierge services, which means you can request necessary baby items such as cribs, baby bathtubs, strollers, bottle sterilizers, and safety gates in advance. It also offers a kids' club and family playroom that operates late into the night, allowing parents to enjoy a romantic dinner or explore the city's nightlife.

The best time to visit Lisbon is during Spring (March to May) or Fall (September to October) when the weather is typically mild and comfortable. The city is less crowded compared to the peak summer months, allowing for a more relaxed pace and easier navigation with strollers or carriers. You're also likely to get better deals on accommodations and flights during off-peak seasons! That said, we are planning to live in Sintra, about 30 minutes outside of Lisbon for 2 months in July and August and have no reservations about the weather! So really, anytime in the Spring, Summer or Fall is desirable.

Lisbon has pedestrian-friendly streets and an efficient and accessible public transportation system, making it easier to navigate the city with a stroller. Lisbon has numerous parks and botanical gardens where your baby can enjoy some fresh air and new sights and smells.

Where to Stay: Waipouli Beach Resort

We visited Kauai when Caden was 16 months old . We liked this resort because it has ocean views, a full kitchen, and a separate space for Caden to sleep. Plus, it's a short walk to the beautiful beach! Some other benefits include:

  • Large walk-in sand-bottomed baby pool (I didn’t realize how amazing this would be!)
  • Onsite bar/restaurant with great reviews
  • Directly across from Safeway Supermarket
  • 5 min walk to the Kapaa Bike Path

The months from September to November or from April to June are generally considered the most ideal. The weather is pleasant and the tourist crowds are thinner, making it a great time for families with babies to enjoy a more relaxed beach scene. Keep in mind that Kauai is known for its tropical climate, meaning rainfall can be expected year-round. While the rain showers are brief, it may be a good idea to bring light rain jackets and waterproof stroller covers.

Kauai has many walkable beaches that make it easy to throw on a baby carrier and enjoy the scenic views (and a little exercise!) with a baby. There are tons of family-friendly eateries and local shops to explore with a stroller in tow.

Where to Stay: Fairmont Waterfront

This hotel is renowned for its exceptional service, spacious rooms, and child-friendly amenities. For families vacationing with babies, the hotel provides cribs upon request, sockets with child safety covers, babysitting services, and rooms with a separate living area to comfortably accommodate a sleeping baby while parents relax.

If you prefer milder weather, consider visiting between April and October but if you're into festive activities and don't mind colder weather, the November and December holiday season is a magical experience, with city-wide decorations and festive events.

Vancouver is teeming with engaging activities, stunning sights, and comfortable amenities that cater to both parents and their little ones. With a host of child-friendly restaurants offering high chairs and kid-specific menus, meal times become an enjoyable experience rather than a stress-filled event. The city's public transportation system is well-equipped to accommodate strollers, and many of Vancouver's attractions feature interactive exhibits and baby-friendly facilities.

Where to Stay: Moon Palace The Grand Cancun

We're obsessed with Moon Palace and have visited it three times with our kids! This all-inclusive beachfront resort pairs luxurious comfort and warm-weather activities with thoughtful amenities for young families, all while serving up 5 star dining and drink experiences.

The optimal time to visit Cancun with your baby is during late fall, winter and early spring, particularly between November and April. During these months, the weather is warm and inviting, perfect for beach outings and outdoor activities.

The Playroom, an exclusive kids' club, is equipped with various age-specific activities and games to keep your little ones entertained – and if you have a child 4 years old or older, you can leave them there to enjoy a calm peaceful dinner with just you and your sleepy baby. They also offer babysitting services if you’re looking to ditch your children all together, all restaurants but one are baby-friendly, and the resort offers crib and baby-proofing accessories upon request. The waterpark has a large splash pad perfect for kids younger than 2 years old, and has a toddler-friendly aquatic playground as well as lazy river for all ages to enjoy. Unlike most all-inclusive resorts, the food and beverage scene is stellar… and we are food snobs that can confidently recommend the dinner experiences.

Preparing for Your Baby's First Trip

Here are some handy tips and tricks to keep in mind when planning your baby's first vacation:

  • Pack Smartly: Carry essentials such as diapers, baby wipes, baby food, a change of clothes, medicine, and pacifiers. It may be a hassle to shop for these things once you've arrived. You also may want to pack a few familiar toys or comfort objects to help your baby adjust to the new surroundings.
  • Plan Your Itinerary: Consider your baby's schedule when planning the day. Factor in nap times and regular feeding times.
  • Consider Transportation: For air travel, check the airline's policy on baby equipment like strollers and car seats. If you're renting a car, ensure the car rental company offers various car seat sizes, if you decide to leave yours at home. You may also want to consider a baby equipment rental service too.
  • Health: Ensure your baby is up-to-date with vaccinations and always carry a small first-aid kit with you.
  • Practice Patience : Vacations with babies won’t go as planned. Be prepared for unexpected tantrums or changes in routine, and remember that your baby is experiencing a lot of new things. Patience and flexibility will make the journey smoother. And remember, travel days are tough, but the frustrating moments are temporary!
  • Capture the Moments: Don't forget to capture the special moments. They will make for wonderful memories and stories in the future.

The Best Resorts for Families with Infants and Toddlers

By Ashlea Halpern

resort ocean beach hotel

When my newborn son turned one month old, I got him a passport . By 10 weeks, he was approved for Global Entry . To say Julian comes from a travel-loving family is an understatement. Pre-pandemic, I was on the road about half the year for work and pleasure. Fantasizing about where I would take him first helped me power through late-night feeding sessions—until it occurred to me, Oh right, traveling with kids is hard. All that gear to schlep! All those dirty looks on planes! And how on earth was I supposed to soundproof a hotel room when he inevitably throws a temper tantrum at 2 a.m.?

Instead of allowing myself to be overwhelmed with real and manufactured anxieties, I decided to do my research. Many hotels that claim to be “family-friendly” focus on the five-and-up set, trumpeting their edutainment programming and kids’ clubs for kindergarteners to tweens. But what about families with younger children? There had to be resorts for families out there that could make traveling with an infant or toddler (slightly) less exhausting. Ones that minimize how much junk parents have to pack, and always make babies feel welcome—even when they’re having a meltdown. Surely they didn’t all have Disney , Beaches, or Great Wolf Lodge in the name, right?

What follows are 15 truly infant- and toddler-friendly picks across the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean. These properties go above and beyond for their littlest guests, while simultaneously offering plenty of vacation-worthy draws for weary parents.

JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa in Palm Desert, California

The Top 10 Best Baby-friendly Travel Destinations in the US

As you guys know, Kenny and I are had our first baby last year ! When I was pregnant, I kept busy researching the best destinations to travel with a baby . We love to travel, and while we were awaiting Harrison’s big debut into the world, we were anxious to see the world with our little one! And, to be honest, we didn’t know what to expect. We didn’t want to jump right in and start traveling abroad, so we figured it would be great to start with some easy US destinations close to home! But where are the best places to travel with an infant in the USA? And what places are the easiest for traveling with a baby? After gathering a ton of recommendations I’ve gotten from friends, fellow moms, and tons of research, as well as my own experience over the past year and a half traveling all over the world with our baby boy!

Here are my top Jetset-approved travel destinations in the USA for traveling with a baby (along with a few hotel and resort recommendations for each!).

best travel destinations with newborn

Y’all know how much Kenny and I LOVE Hawaii ! Not only did we get married here , but we also spent our final babymoon here (and we can’t wait to make more memories with our little beach babe here in the years to come!). Hawaii is great for a trip with your baby because the islands are easy to navigate, they are safe and very clean, and Hawaii prides itself on being a family-friendly vacay destination! Many of the resorts have family-friendly rooms complete with cribs, bottle sterilizers, and so much more.

Where to Stay With a Baby in Hawaii

best travel destinations with newborn

I would specifically recommend going to either the Big Island or Maui if you are traveling with an infant. On the Big Island, my top recommendation is Four Seasons Hualalai  (Kenny and I have stayed here in the past and it is  dreamy !!). Here, you can request anything and everything to make your stay more comfortable, from a crib, playpen, diapers, wipes, a white noise machine, a bottle warmer, “little swimmers” diapers for the beach/pool, a nursing pillow, and a high chair! This is an incredible convenience because it means less packing/stressing for you when traveling with a baby!

In Maui, I would recommend Four Seasons Maui , Westin Maui , or Sheraton Maui . Similar to the Hualalai property, Four Seasons Maui offers tons of amenities for families ( check out a full list here !).

Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina

The Montage Palmetto Bluff blew me away in terms of being an ideal destination with my family. If you’re looking for a quintessential experience of the American South, a five-star resort surrounded by scenic lowcountry and so much wildlife, there’s no better place. There’s something about this classic Southern escape that instantly relaxes you. The charming hospitality and next-level service. The history, the emphasis on lowcountry culture, and the stunning South Carolina nature. Or the fact that they’ve thought of everything when it comes to creating the perfect lowcountry experience for their guests (and families of all ages!!!) . There’s s’mores in the courtyard every night, and kids everywhere having the time of their life. They even have a partnership with Uppababy which allows you to rent Uppababy equipment on property so you don’t have to pack a thing! Huge win for traveling with a baby!

It’s no secret that 30A, located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. It’s also the  ideal family vacation. From action-packed beach days to movie nights under the stars, a Seaside getaway is just what the doctor ordered. The beaches are stunning, and will be the perfect backdrop to your vacation with baby!

Where to stay around Seaside, Florida

Look into Alys Beach or Watercolor.

Beach access

With a convenient beach entrance only a few steps away, this 2 bedroom is a great choice in Alys Beach.

Nestled Inn

Or try this adorable home in a gated community with an un-crowded beach .

I highly recommend renting a VRBO in Seaside! There are  hundreds of cute beach houses that will make your stay super comfortable, especially if you are traveling with other friends or family. This beach house has free bikes and a private pool with enough room for 9 guests, while this condo is reasonably priced (only $471/night!) and is right on the water. If you are traveling with the whole fam for a reunion or family vacation, check out this incredible home where the beach is your backyard!

If VRBOs aren’t your style, grab a room at The WaterColor Inn & Resort (rated #1 on Trip Advisor as the most kid-friendly hotel in 30A!). Hey, maybe you could wear your Watercolors Swim and matching Kenny Flowers / Kiddy Flowers at the WaterColor Inn?! 😉

Charleston, South Carolina

best travel destinations with newborn

In Charleston, you’ll see babies and kids everywhere!!!  From roaming around the breweries, to living their best life at the beach, Charleston is extremely baby-and-kid-friendly.

There are so many things to do in Charleston, South Carolina with kids. The downtown streets are easy to navigate with a stroller and there are plenty of parks and open spaces. Make sure you walk Rainbow Row to see all the charming houses. From there, make a stop at the Battery… then head out to the aquarium (one of the best!) or one of Charleston’s best beaches .

Where to Stay With a Baby in Charleston

In my opinion, the best places to stay in Charleston with your baby are Wild Dunes Resort or Hotel Bennett . You can book Wild Dunes Resort and stay at the hotel or at one of their VRBO’s as it is a vacation rental located in Isle of Palms (known for its beaches, eateries, and sea turtles!!). If you are looking for a downtown hotel that is very walkable, go for Hotel Bennett. You won’t be disappointed!

San Diego, California

best travel destinations with newborn

San Diego is known for its beautiful beaches and near-perfect weather all year, making it a fabulous beach destination for families.

As an added bonus, San Diego is home to Lego Land , which is a must-see for the kids! I would also recommend that you go to the award-winning San Diego Zoo (one of the best zoos in the world, and my personal favorite!), Sea World , or venture around Balboa Park with your little one in tow.

Where to Stay With a Baby in San Diego

If you are looking for a luxury hotel, look no further than Hotel Del Coronado . This historic hotel is set on one of the best beaches in California, and one of my favorites.

San Diego Mission Bay Resort also offers great amenities for both parents and infants.

best travel destinations with newborn

Looking for a VRBO in San Diego? There are hundreds of great options! Personally, I lean toward a neighborhood called La Jolla (this is where my grandparents live and where I have spent the most time!). If you’re looking for a VRBO there, I would recommend this sophisticated beach-front sanctuary or this luxury condo in the heart of the village. For those of you who are looking for a house instead of a condo, this three-bedroom home in La Jolla sleeps six!

On a budget? Snag this two-bedroom right on the water (only $183/night!!).

Orlando, Florida

For many, it’s the happiest place on earth. It’s the place where dreams come true and kids are able to live out their princess and superhero dreams in real life. It’s Disney World!! Orlando is a no-brainer when it comes to bringing the kids. Disney World will probably be one of their core memories from their childhood. And if you are looking for a solid mix between a beach vacation and Disney, consider a Disney Cruise!

There are several places to stay right at Disney World from Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge to the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel (near EPCOT). But I have to say, I think my top pick would be the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort ! Here, you get the best of both worlds – you get the luxury of the Four Seasons while staying right on the Walt Disney World property!

Sonoma, California

best travel destinations with newborn

Sonoma isn’t just for bachelorette parties and girls’ trips! The towns surrounding Sonoma are extremely inviting, super relaxing, and many of the restaurants, although luxurious, are family-friendly. Plus, let’s face it, chances are you have been waiting a year (or more) to drink wine again. Why not enjoy California’s best wineries with your baby in tow?!

Fairmont is a brand that features family-friendly hotels and resorts all over the world. The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is no exception. Here, you will enjoy spacious rooms and all of the family-friendly activities your heart desires!

My top recommendation if you are looking for a bed and breakfast in Sonoma is Beltane Ranch . Beltane Ranch offers stand-alone cottages that will allow you the space and privacy you are craving. Each cottage is complete with a kitchenette, so you can cook your meals easily without having to head into town!

San Antonio, Texas

best travel destinations with newborn

San Antonio is a wonderful place to bring your kiddo! The city has a zoo, a children’s train, and even a hands-on sensory exhibit called The DoSeum that was made just for kids. Plus, the riverwalk is an easy-to-navigate area that is perfect for a walk with baby in your UppaBaby stroller !

The top two places that I would recommend staying with a baby in San Antonio are Hotel Emma and JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa . Hotel Emma is a five-star luxury hotel complete with cribs and baby products for infants, plus a swanky hotel bar for mom and dad! The JW Marriott in San Antonio has over 1,000 rooms with different layouts, so you can choose whatever works best for you. They have a pool just for young kids, and they also offer shaded cabanas with fridges to help keep bottles cool!

Chicago, Illinois

best travel destinations with newborn

Perhaps you are craving the busyness of New York City or Washington D.C., but you can’t quite wrap your head around what it would be like to shlep the stroller down the subway stairs – Chicago is for you! Chicago is a cleaner city than both NYC and D.C., and it is also a bit safer overall. The city is fairly compact and easy to navigate, plus, you won’t find the sky-high prices that you would experience in Manhattan. Plus, many of the streets and sidewalks in Chicago are designed with strollers in mind, making it easy to navigate the city. And a lot of the museums provide special stroller tours.

Where to Stay With a Baby in Chicago

Warwick Allerton – Chicago was rated the #1 hotel for families in Chicago by hotels.com. This property offers  free cribs and playpens for infants, babysitting services (for a surcharge), and daily housekeeping to ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible. 21c Hotel Museum Chicago also offers free cribs/beds for babies, and for mom and dad, they have a luxurious spa onsite.

Aspen, Colorado

If a snow weekend with your little snow bunny is what you’re feeling this winter, look no further than Aspen .

Where to stay in Aspen with a baby

This Auberge hotel is such a gem! It’s been the heart of Aspen since 1889 and has a luxury-meets-wild-west vibe. It’s perfectly located and ultra-cozy for your little snow baby. Think: super comfy, spacious rooms with to-die-for bathtubs. I loved the history, charm, and friendliness of this place. It’s easily the best hotel in Aspen, but it doesn’t act snooty at all.

Twin Perspectives

7 Best Places to Travel with Baby or Toddler in 2023

Do you suffer from travel anxiety.

We can help you overcome anxiety and see the world.

This sponsored blog post – the best places to travel to with a baby or toddler in 2022 – is written in collaboration with Original Travel.

When it comes to travelling with babies or toddlers, I firmly believe that parents fall into one of two camps.

Firstly, there are those parents who think nothing of travelling with a newborn or small children. Artfully slotting their babies into effortlessly arranged slings, they laugh away fears of deviated schedules and instead board their flight with all the confidence and optimism of a fresh-faced gap year student.

There is then the second camp – my own, preferred, camp. This camp agonise over destinations; unearthing calculators from desk drawers to figure out time differences, adjusted bedtimes and altered nap schedules. Even once a destination has been decided upon, the anxiety doesn’t let up.

Instead, this camp boards their flight like the condemned: lines of ashen and expressionless faces, clutching bags of snack-sized raisins and portfolios of electronic devices.

Of course, I desperately wish I could channel the laid back attitude of the first camp. Travel is something I love – something I’m not sure I could live without . Making it work alongside motherhood is therefore something I want to do; will have to do. I just need to find a way, or ideally, a travel company, that can help make this transition easier.

Thankfully, that’s where Original Travel come in.

Curating tailor-made holidays for adventurers of all shapes and sizes, Original Travel not only take the stress out of organising a trip, but offer a whole host of additional services that make travelling (especially with a baby or toddler) a veritable breeze.

Having recently spoken to their team, and in desperate need of some inspiration (and reassurance), Original Travel were more than happy to put together a list of some of the best places to travel to with a baby or toddler in 2022.

Destinations to suit even the most foot-loose and fancy-free of families, and of course, life’s more neurotic sorts, we wanted to share this list in the hope of inspiring you to pack your bags, scoop up your babies and head off on a much needed post-pandemic adventure.

best travel destinations with newborn

Read our guide to what to pack when travelling with a baby here .

The best places to travel with a baby or toddler to in 2022.

We have graded the destinations below according to ease and distance, providing a location for every type of parent (from the uptight to the adventurous).

1. Portugal (Easy)

Prior to having our babies , we were already a little starry-eyed when it came to Portugal.

Having spent many of those blissful, pre-Covid days exploring the Algarve , we fell in love with its dramatic, coastal beauty and sleepy, white-washed towns.

Reflecting on these adventures, it’s probably Lagos – a laid-back, surfer-inspired destination – that would make for the best holidays with newborns.

Algarve beaches

Indeed, Praia do Camilo is ideal for both paddling and swimming, thanks to its secluded location and calm, shallow waters. Likewise, Praia Dona Ana is an easy walk from Lagos itself; filled with small restaurants and plenty of space for children to run and play. There is even a miniature tourist train that leaves Lagos’ marina every hour, which will take you to both beaches and back (tickets cost €3.50 and include 7 stops ).

For a change of scene, Lagos is also a short drive from some of the Algarve’s prettiest towns, including Tavira and Vilamoura .

Best Activities to do with a Baby or Toddler: head to the beach or enjoy Lagos’ marina, which offers a hoard of family fun activities (with dolphin tours aplenty). Parque Aventura Lagos , just five minutes from Lagos, is also incredibly popular with families; offering everything from paintball to high ropes.

When to Visit : alongside the summer months, April and May are lovely times to visit the Algarve, for slightly milder temperatures and fewer people.

Best Places to Travel to With a Baby or Toddler 2022

We were fortunate enough to visit Finnish Lapland in 2020 and were utterly captivated by the experience – regularly commenting on how perfect the holiday would be for children and families.

Surprisingly, it is an incredibly easy destination to reach. A direct flight from London Gatwick operates (during the winter months) to Ivalo , which lies right at the heart of the Finnish Arctic Circle. We were surprised to discover that the flight was just over 3 hours long; making it relatively painless if travelling with a baby or toddler. From Ivalo, it is then just a 20 minute transfer to Saariselkä, where the real magic begins.

Best Activities to do with a Baby or Toddler: there are almost too many to list here, but just a few ideas include: reindeer rides, tobogganing, cross country skiing and northern lights spotting. Many hotels in Saariselka also provide brilliant family friendly resorts over the festive months, including gingerbread making with Mrs Claus.

Original Travel’s Tour Ideas: A Finnish Family Christmas.

When To Visit: November to February, to truly embrace Lapland’s Christmas magic.

7. america’s pacific north west (medium – hard).

In 2019, we headed off on the road trip of a lifetime: travelling from Seattle to San Francisco as we explored America’s beautiful Pacific North West.

Although baby free at the time, it is a road trip you could very easily enjoy with a little one. Alternatively, and if you don’t have the time (or patience) to travel the entire length of the coast, you could opt to visit just a few of the locations en route, such as atmospheric Seattle , laid back Portland or the dramatic, ancient Redwoods.

5) Infant Car Seat

I missed the boat on the Doona with my kids, but I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews from friends about how game-changing it is, so I had to try it out for myself to see what all the hullabaloo is about. And by “try it out for myself,” I mean accompanied a friend on several excursions with her infant and the stroller.

However, several members of our team also have this stroller and say that they can't live without its convenience. It's genuinely a day changer, getting baby around everywhere with no fuss.

Different than the other strollers on this list, the Doona is a car seat with collapsible wheels and a telescoping handle that allows it to turn into a compact stroller. While it doesn’t have a one-hand fold, it is functional and beyond efficient, and it provides a cozy and secure place for babies to ride.

The car seat alone weighs 16.5 pounds, and with the 10.3-pound base, the whole stroller clocks in at 28.8 pounds. That may sound like a lot, but it’s very reasonable considering car seats can be super heavy. It’s also a really safe rear-facing infant car seat option with an anti-rebound bar and three-layer side impact protection.

An adjustable handle allows you to customize the stroller to your height, and it also makes it easy for siblings to push.

6) Spring Compact Stroller

The Thule Spring has the bells and whistles of a full-size stroller but in a compact frame (to be exact, it’s 30% smaller than traditional three-wheel strollers). Its smaller size and only three wheels take up less trunk space, and it can fit through narrow doorways.

This would be a great gift for someone going to Disney as it’s approved for Disney theme parks. It’s also parent-approved for Disney parks as the seat can fully recline, allowing your kid to take a full-blown nap so you can stay at Disney longer with a child who has actually rested. More sleep equals fewer meltdowns, right? One can dream.

The luxury stroller is impressively well-built and handles like a pro. It can be pushed with one hand without it veering to one side, so it’s a smooth ride for your kiddo and you while pushing.

An adjustable handlebar makes the Spring a fantastic choice for tall parents and there’s plenty of storage space for holding all your things. Compared to the other travel strollers on this list, this one is on the heavier side, but it’s still very manageable and comfortable to travel with.

The stroller doesn’t have a foot bar, so while testing it, I found that it was challenging to lift the stroller over bumps in the road since there was no wear to apply pressure at the back.

Although the seat doesn’t recline entirely, you can lower it using only one hand, which is huge.</p><p>Snacktime doesn’t have to end when it’s stroller time as the stroller features a swing-open snack tray and cup holder. 7) Kooper RS Travel Stroller

In addition to its all-terrain wheels and easy maneuverability, a major perk of Joovy’s Kooper travel stroller is its washable fabric. The fabric is removable and machine washable, so you don’t have to spot clean every time your kid drops food — which, if your child is anything like mine, is constant.

A three-panel, water-repellent canopy provides excellent sun coverage, but it’s the fourth hidden panel that’s really noteworthy, which I discovered when testing the stroller with a kiddo who really, really was not happy with the sun in his eyes. That panel provides UPF 50+ coverage almost all the way to the snack tray. Although the seat doesn’t recline entirely, you can lower it using only one hand, which is huge.

Snacktime doesn’t have to end when it’s stroller time as the stroller features a swing-open snack tray and cup holder. There’s also a mesh cup holder and a zippered pocket built into the back of the stroller for grownups, and a good-sized storage basket on the bottom can hold up to 15 pounds.

If you’re giving this as a gift, the Kooper accommodates a 3-month-old to a child up to 55 pounds, but you can also purchase the Kooper car seat adapter separately to use an infant car seat.

Again, Cat Bowen is a big, big fan of this stroller, loving the fold, but also loving the easy hand holds this stroller has when it's folded that not all travel strollers have.

<p>Snow cone machines are a great way for families to deliver relatively healthy, <a href="https://www.bestproducts.com/eats/g1660/popsicle-molds/">cool treats</a> to their kids (especially when you keep the syrup levels in check). Keep the following in mind, and you’ll be on the road to snow cone success.</p><p><strong>Size</strong></p><p>Larger snow cone machines can, naturally, produce more cones, and do this faster than smaller machines. If you or your recipient plan to make the occasional cone for friends and family, you may want to opt for a small model (which will likely also be less expensive). If buying a larger one is more practical, consider the size and storage options carefully before settling on a winner.</p><p><strong>Type</strong></p><p>There are electric and manual snow cone options. The lo-fi manual machines are less expensive and portable — no plug needed. This is a huge bonus if you want to make cones on the go. The electric machines work faster and churn out more finely textured ice. Several of our commercial selections are capable of producing enough ice for large-scale parties and events.</p><p><strong>Extras</strong></p><p>Some snow cone machines come with syrup, ice trays, ice molds, and other helpful accessories. Consider which of these — if any — you want and need. Also keep in mind that some machines work better with ice from molds, which means you’ll have to plan ahead in order to “make” the ice.</p>

8) What to Consider

Travel strollers are lighter and easier to fold than standard strollers, which is a huge perk, and there are several things to consider before committing.

It’s important to ensure that the stroller's weight is reasonable for you to travel with, especially if you’ll be lifting it into an overhead bin. Most travel strollers weigh between 12 and 30 pounds, so an additional 15 pounds or so can make a difference for some. The weight limit is also something to consider if you plan on using the stroller beyond the toddler years or if you have an older child who often decides that they can’t possibly walk another step when you’re out and about. The average travel stroller can hold somewhere between 50 and 70 pounds, and we've noted weight limits for each stroller.

Not all travel strollers fit into overhead bins, so be sure to check the folded dimensions and compare them to the overhead bin dimensions on standard flights. The fold size is also crucial information to know for your trunk. The last thing you want to deal with is a stroller that doesn’t fit in your car. I’ve been there and ended up getting a new car to accommodate my stroller. (We needed the extra space anyway, but still.)

Storage Size

If your family enjoys visiting amusement parks like Disneyland, museums, or other kid-friendly attractions, you’ll benefit from a travel stroller with enough storage to hold your diaper bag, shopping bags, or whatever else you’ll be bringing along.“Any parent making their way through security or navigating the hustle to their gate, all while keeping their travel companion cozy and happy along the way, needs a lightweight stroller with plenty of storage capacity, an easy one-hand fold, and a comfy recline seat,” Ritchie says. “Because let’s face it when you can roll through the terminal easily while your baby rides with a smile, the flight will be a breeze for both you and your boarding zone.”

9) How We Tested

Every stroller on this list was chosen based on strollers I have tested with my kids or that come tested by trusted members of our community. I also considered who was manufacturing the stroller and specs I mentioned earlier. Although it wasn’t at the top of my list, I considered aesthetics — because a stroller’s gotta be cute, right?

I spent time pushing my 4-year-old son around the neighborhood in the travel strollers I tested, which he thoroughly enjoyed. I then took the strollers on various excursions to determine the ease of use while on the go.

I spent the most time with the Chicco Presto Self-Folding Compact Stroller, because although it isn’t luxury feeling, it’s simple to use. My son took great pleasure in being wheeled around the grocery store and Target. I only needed a few things, and the storage basket was plenty big. It was a rainy day and the canopy didn’t cover a lot, so it did take a bit of time for it to dry, but that wasn’t much of an issue.

A friend and her toddler joined us at our local aquarium for a few hours, and she used the Joovy Kooper RS Travel Stroller. She commented several times on how smooth it felt to push. Her daughter was a big fan of the snack tray and cup holder, but I think that had more to do with the fact that snacks were involved. She had to wipe down the seat after an apple sauce incident, but it cleaned right up.

I took the Thule Spring Compact Stroller on a run, and while it isn’t technically a jogger, it was really easy to maneuver on flat roads and worked beautifully. I was impressed at its versatility in a stroller that’s great for traveling, everyday use, and jogging. Since the Doona is designed for infants, a friend with a 3-month-old tested the stroller for 2 weeks. She found the stroller to be incredibly efficient and easy to use, especially with her older kids in tow, which meant more chaos. She was thrilled with the one-handed fold that turned the stroller into a car seat with little to no effort.

The other strollers on this list have been vetted and tested by members of our team, looking for things like maneuverability, ease of fold, and how well they clean up. We looked at the size of the storage, the cost, and even the brands customer service. These are truly the top of the top.

Best Driving Vacations 2024: Go on the ultimate full-circle adventure around Lake Erie

Highlights include beaches, wineries, history and a stop in ontario to admire the natural wonder of niagara falls..

Horseshoe Falls, one of the three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls, lies predominantly in Canada

Today we continue on our journey highlighting four of the best driving destinations from central Ohio.

From a circle tour of “our Great Lake” to the architectural wonders of a modernist sister city three hours away, these extraordinary adventures are wonderful ways to widen your horizons in 2024.

Today's installment is Part 3 of 4 destination packages from Columbus Monthly's annual travel guide. We hope you enjoy.

Part 1: Best Driving Vacations 2024: Explore the Northern Shore of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Experiencing Lake Erie

Lake Erie was the last Great Lake to be discovered and explored by European adventurers. Don’t make their mistake. And if you decide to do some lakefront exploring this year, consider something more than a quick trip to Cedar Point or Put-in-Bay .

Sure, Ohio’s lakeshore is packed with fun and interesting destinations. But three other states and the Canadian province of Ontario also share the Lake Erie shoreline. A multiday international circle tour of our Great Lake offers something for every traveler, including wineries, history, city lights, natural delights, beaches and fun in, on or next to the water.

From Columbus, a complete circle tour of the lake requires at least 12 hours of driving in total. So allow three or four days for a leisurely circumnavigation with plenty of stops along the way.

Of course, it doesn’t matter which direction you circle the lake, but assuming your coin flip demands “counterclockwise,” a good first stop from Columbus is Ohio’s Grand River Valley wine region east of Cleveland.

The region, which includes the Vines & Wine trail in Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties, takes advantage of a lake-influenced microclimate to grow a wide variety of grapes, especially American-European hybrids that allow production of some tasty and sophisticated vintages. Several good lodging options in the area, including some at the wineries, also offer a good choice for a first night’s stay, especially after a few tastings.

Part 2: Best Driving Vacations 2024: Take a Battlefield Tour of Pennsylvania and Maryland

Pennsylvania’s Presque Isle State Park is a large, sandy peninsula that juts into the lake, forming a natural barrier protecting the harbor at the city of Erie and featuring beaches, nature trails and plenty of room for stretching your legs before the next segment of the journey. Buffalo, New York, is a better travel destination than its reputation might suggest, at least if you visit after the last of the winter’s lake-effect snow has melted. The city has a number of sites associated with famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright , including the Martin House , one of Wright’s great achievements in Prairie-style architecture.

Niagara Falls may be a cliche, but it’s a magnificent, awe-inspiring one. Cross the border into Canada for the best views of the natural wonder and the best places to spend the night.

Remember, you’ll need a current passport to make the international crossing. (You don’t have a passport ? What are you waiting for?) Driving along the northern shore of Lake Erie reveals a stretch of lovely farms and orchards dotted by a series of lakeside towns, each seemingly more charming than the last. Port Stanley, Leamington, Kingsville, Amherstberg and others offer pleasant waterfront business districts with shopping, cozy bed and breakfasts, historic sites and restaurants and diners often featuring local and scrumptious lake-caught perch.

Point Pelee National Park is situated on and around a natural point that sticks out far into the lake. It’s a prime spot for watching the migrating birds that use it as a jumping-off point before flying across the lake every spring. (And if you walk out to the very tip of the ever-shifting sandy-stony point, and pocket the last pebble above the waterline, you’ll have the southernmost point of the Canadian mainland as a souvenir.)

Lake-rambling gamblers can, of course, play in the casinos of Toledo or Cleveland, but why not give the slots and tables a try at Caesars Windsor , across the border from Detroit (which has several casinos of its own)? The view of the Detroit skyline is quite lovely from Windsor. Plus, there’s something a bit exotic about placing a bet with colorful Canadian currency. And every $100 Canadian lost is only $75 American — so you’re already ahead!

Toledo is another town that doesn’t get its tourism props, but be sure to stop by the National Museum of the Great Lakes at the Toledo Maritime Center on the Maumee River near downtown. The center has many great exhibits about all of the Great Lakes, including their natural history, commercial activity, shipwrecks, lighthouses and much more. Visitors can also tour the retired coal ship Col. James M. Schoonmaker, once the largest freighter on the lakes.

From Toledo, a traveler can call it a tour and head south on U.S. 23 toward central Ohio, or continue along the lake to more familiar Ohio stops such as Port Clinton , Put-in-Bay, Sandusky and on to Cleveland.

Or you might just be tempted to turn around and try the drive in the other direction.

Where to Stay Along the Way

The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake is a great place to stay while exploring Ohio wine country, and even offers a shuttle to and from several area wineries. Stays range from about $110 per night. Many hotels in Niagara Falls, Ontario, offer magnificent views, such as at the Hilton Fallsview , with rates for view rooms beginning at less than $150 per night. Lake Erie’s north shore has many cozy inns and B&Bs, including the Hallmark-cute Kettle Creek Inn in Port Stanley, with rooms beginning about $100 per night. thelodgeatgeneva.com , niagarafallshilton.com , kettlecreekinn.com

The port of Isafjordur in the westfjords region of Iceland has attracted record numbers of cruise ... [+] ships in recent years.

Unlike more traditional cruise destinations, Iceland presents a rugged, untamed beauty. Known for its raw and varied landscapes, Iceland offers a seemingly endless list of natural wonders, from the steaming geothermal vents and spouting geysers to the dramatic glaciers and thunderous waterfalls.

The island's rich Viking heritage and folklore add layers of intrigue to its already captivating landscapes.

This unique terrain, coupled with the opportunity—depending on the season—to enjoy the midnight sun or mystical northern lights, makes Iceland a prime destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those fascinated by the interplay of culture and the natural world.

Cruising around Iceland not only allows travelers to experience the volcanic landscapes from a unique vantage point but also offers convenient transport between the main ports and highlights of Iceland , all from the comfort of a modern cruise ship.

The cruise industry has recognized Iceland's appeal, offering an increasing variety of itineraries that cater to different interests and time frames, including extensive circumnavigations of the island.

According to Cruise Iceland , cruise ships registered almost one million passenger visits in 2023, marking an 80% increase from 2019.

The accessibility of remote fjords, wildlife encounters including puffins and whales, and the chance to experience the midnight sun in summer or witness the mystical northern lights in winter, are among the highlights of these voyages.

Something to bear in mind is the additional cost required for excursions, whether you book through the cruise line or choose independent options.

Unlike a Norwegian fjords cruise , which you can enjoy without leaving the ship, Iceland cruises require additional transport to reach the most iconic sites. They are also a wise idea if you want to make the most of wildlife-watching opportunities.

Whale watching is a major tourist attraction in Northern Iceland.

The most popular Icelandic cruise port is Reykjavik, followed by Akureyri in the north of the country, Isafjordur in the westfjords region, and Seydisfjordur on the east coast.

An itinerary that includes all four of these ports—Reykjavik, Akureyri, Isafjordur, and Seydisfjordur—offers guests a comprehensive appreciation of Iceland’s varied landscapes.

Fly-Cruise From Reykjavik

If you don’t mind flying, Reykjavik is the starting point for many of the more in-depth circumnavigations of Iceland.

Such cruises contain fewer sea days and may call at smaller ports, offering a more intimate experience of Iceland, while also allowing guests to spend a few days exploring the Icelandic capital before or after the cruise.

This 7-day Iceland Intensive itinerary from Celebrity Cruises begins and ends in Reykjavik and includes port calls in Reykjavik, Seydisfjordur, Djúpivogur, and Akureyri.

Iceland Cruises From The U.K.

The U.K. is a popular departure point for Iceland cruises, some of which may also include ports of call in Scotland and Norway. The Port of Southampton is the most common departure port, used by lines including Celebrity, Cunard, Norwegian Cruise Line, P&O Cruises, and Princess.

This 14-day cruise on Norwegian Prima starts and ends in Southampton and includes three Icelandic ports, including an overnight stay in Reykjavik, along with three ports of call in Norway.

Some small ship lines such as Ambassador, Fred Olsen, and Saga Cruises, offer departures from regional ports such as Dover, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Rosyth.

The gateway to the westfjords region, Isafjordur is increasingly found on Iceland cruise ... [+] itineraries.

Other popular departure points across Europe include the Netherlands (Celebrity, Holland America) and Germany (AIDA). Although the latter does welcome English speakers, some knowledge of German is advised to get the most from the experience.

Northern Transatlantic Route

Another option to consider is a one-way cruise between North America and Europe that calls in to at least one port in Iceland. Such repositioning cruises that take a northern route often include additional ports of call in Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

Luxury Cruises To Iceland

In addition to the mainstream cruise lines, Iceland is a popular destination for luxury and ultra-luxury lines such as Seabourn, Silversea, and Windstar.

Iceland is also a popular destination for expedition cruise lines such as Aurora Expeditions, Hurtigruten Expeditions, and Lindblad. This option is worth considering for travelers interested in learning more about the science behind Iceland’s geology or the wildlife that calls its chilly waters home.

Packing For An Iceland Cruise

When packing for an Iceland cruise, remember that the weather can be as varied as the landscape itself. It's essential to be prepared for all conditions, regardless of the season.

The cornerstone of any travel wardrobe for Iceland is layering. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep you dry, add an insulating layer for warmth, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer. This approach allows you to adjust your clothing to match the weather, which can change several times in a day.

A waterproof jacket and pants are crucial, as rain is possible any time of the year. Waterproof hiking shoes or boots are also essential if you plan to explore Iceland's rugged terrain during port stops.

Don't forget warm accessories such as hats, gloves, and scarves, but also sun protection including sunglasses and sunscreen. For wildlife enthusiasts, a good pair of binoculars is invaluable. To keep all these accessories safe and at hand, a sturdy daypack is useful for shore excursions.

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Live Updates: Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship hits it; construction crew missing

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

“They are responding with all of the assets at their disposal,” he said in a statement. “Our prayers right now are for the missing individuals and victims of this tragedy. We thank God for the effective service of our first responders.”

Here’s what we know.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, which left from Baltimore on March 23 , will return to Norfolk instead on April 4. "Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements," a spokesperson said in an email.

The ship's April 4 and 12 cruises will leave from Norfolk, too. "Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations," the spokesperson added. "After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to the Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance."

Was your cruise itinerary changed?: What to do next

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.
