Nick Cave and Warren Ellis review – a transcendent night that verged on holy

Hanging Rock, Victoria Cave’s voice has never had so much range – and it was on full display at this outdoor show, filled with delirium and wonder

A s dusk falls, the animals of Hanging Rock become curious onlookers. Kangaroos sit poised on the race track, watching banks of coaches draw in from neighbouring towns; rabbits leap for the cover of bushes and rosellas draw lines above our path on what has become a perfect spring evening.

Their presence is fitting, given all the creature cameos of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’s set: a bird in a nest, horses with manes of fire, a roaming cougar, a reindeer stepping back into the woods. These avatars for grief and love help to spin a sense of wonder, were it really needed.

Cave has long been the stand-in for people with no religion. Secular folk, searching for meaning, find the answers not just in his albums (particularly since 1997’s The Boatman’s Call when he stopped concealing himself behind characters), but through his online Q&A The Red Hand Files and, more than anything else, the live show.

Tonight he appears – sunset to the left, mist to the right, rosy volcanic formation backdrop – and launches into Spinning Song. He’s largely pulling from the contemplative Ghosteen , an Elysian Fields of an album made with the Bad Seeds in 2019 which examines the grief of losing a child; and from Carnage , made with Warren Ellis in 2021 and seemingly designed for live sermonising.

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis at Hanging Rock, Victoria.

Cave is in his usual black suit, and there’s Ellis, a prog-rock sage with flowing beard who dips between synth, violin and flute. They’re backed by drummer Larry Mullins and Radiohead bassist/keyboardist Colin Greenwood, but also by three glittery-robed backing singers who transport this evening into full-blown transcendence. This beneficent presence, of Wendi Rose, Janet Ramus and T Jae Cole, seems to ensure our safe passage through sorrowful moments such as Bright Horses. Their robes oscillate behind Cave as he sits at the piano like a silvery entity.

Strangely, we’re a pinchy little congregation at first. A lone woman who rises to her feet is castigated ferociously by another, heavily coiffured woman, who berates security to act and whips up some clapping when she succeeds. It’s a weird distillation of the huffy outrage that has typified the past few years, and at odds to the kindness emanating from the stage.

While Cave is looking a little more drawn, he’s growing ever more expansive, and his voice has never had so much range. Occasionally he’ll slip into character – on White Elephant, about the killing of George Floyd, he contorts his face with hatred as the backing singers shake their maracas, sweat on every brow; and he humours one murder ballad, Henry Lee, dueting languidly with Ramus, AKA British soul singer Cookie – but largely he is giving of himself. For the title track, Ghosteen, perhaps one of his most personal, a knot of lines appears at his brow. Waiting for You is stripped back to bare emotion.

New GalleryWarren Ellis performs at Hanging Rock, Victoria, with Nick Cave in November 2022

The mood lightens with a T Rex cover, Cosmic Dancer (“pretty good for an English band”); Ellis playing the top line on his violin, rocking on his bum in his chair, legs in the air. Cave laughs before composing himself and continuing. Breathless gets the biggest cheer of the night so far, but Hand of God – perhaps about surrendering to our lack of control over the past few years – reaches fever pitch. There’s a mass exodus from the seats and a rush to the front. Cave is on his feet and sermonising to the pit, leading the delirious “hand of god” chant – kind of like Lord of the Flies’ “kill the pig, cut her throat, spill the blood” but in safer hands. I look around and, like everyone else, the coiffured complainer has surged forth, evidently having made her own hero’s journey tonight.

The encore is no mean offering, stretching long into the night. Among its moments, Hollywood builds to a foot-stomping crescendo, Cave leaning over the pit, playing outstretched hands like a theremin. The three-decades-old Weeping Song is transformed. Cave locks eyes with Ellis across the stage and the backing singers fast-clap between lines – leading the crowd to fall in – before Ellis ignites the whole joint with a violin solo. Into My Arms transports the faithful back into treasured memories, but newer converts have plenty to feast on.

The long journey home after may be beset with trials and tribulations, but the flood of chemicals won’t wear off any time soon. All rise.

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis will perform two special shows at Victoria's Hanging Rock this November.

Nick Cave  and  Warren Ellis  are set to make a long-overdue homecoming this year, announcing a pair of special shows to take place at Hanging Rock this November.

It was just last month that Cave gave fans a taste of what has not yet been announced, revealing on his Red Hand Files site that he and Ellis would be visiting their native country in November and December of this year as part of their global CARNAGE tour plans.

Though a full run of national dates have not yet been announced, Cave and Ellis have however unveiled the jewel in the crown of their forthcoming plans, announcing two special performances in November.

Taking place as part of ALWAYS LIVE (which recently launched with the one-off Foo Fighters concert in Geelong), the pair will perform two special shows at Hanging Rock in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges. Scheduled for Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th of November, these two dates will see the duo joined by Courtney Barnett . Full ticketing details are available below.

Cave and Ellis’ professional partnership spans close to 30 years now, with Ellis first working with Cave in 1993 when he performed violin on The Bad Seeds’  Let Love In record. Since then, they’ve kept close, with Ellis joining The Bad Seeds as a fully-fledged member, and even working with Cave as a member of Grinderman in the ’00s.

Last year though, the pair’s latest creative effort was released, with  CARNAGE serving as their debut full-length release as a duo. Critical reception to the album was overwhelmingly positive, with the record also reaching #2 on the Australian charts, and even scoring a nomination for the Australian Music Prize.

2022 also brought with it news that Cave and Ellis would be the subject of the forthcoming documentary ,  This Much I Know to Be True .

Directed by Andrew Dominik (who also created  Once More With Feeling , focusing on The Bad Seeds), a press release explains that the film captures “Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ exceptional creative relationship as they bring to life the songs from albums,  Ghosteen  and  CARNAGE “.

Live review: nick cave and warren ellis bring their signature sound to victoria.

nick cave & warren ellis tour hanging rock

While it may not be the most reputable place for a picnic, Hanging Rock provided a picturesque backdrop for Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ Carnage tour.

For the first time as a duo, Cave and Ellis have brought their tour to Australia. With two recent shows having taken place at Hanging Rock over the weekend, and another two still to come in Melbourne this week, the duo’s passionate following as well as new fans have been jumping at the opportunity to see these artists live.

While it is exciting to have the two in Australia, it is particularly special for those of us in Victoria, as it is a homecoming for both musicians. Cave was born in Warracknabeal, while Ellis was born and raised in Ballarat. After living and touring abroad for so long, the return to regional Victoria provided genuine and mutual joy evident both in Nick Cave on stage and in the excitable crowd.

Being an outdoor, festival-type event, the gig was at the mercy of the elements. Luckily, the weather played along for their November 25 th show, and though it was muddy underfoot, it was a pleasant night for thousands of fans to enjoy the open-air performance. Kicking off with Aussie support artist Courtney Barnett, concertgoers were able to soak up the live music while day to turned to night.

Performing for well over two hours, Cave and Ellis’ repertoire was diverse, moving between slower and melancholic tunes, to their more upbeat songs which got the crowd up moving. Ellis showcased his incredible musical versatility, bouncing between instruments throughout the show. Well known for his skills on the violin, in which he tends to curl around while playing, Ellis also broke out the flute and the keyboard, and provided backing vocals and seated choreography. Very few can play an instrument to that level with their feet flailing around in the air, but Ellis pulled it off in his signature, endearing style.

Cave played the piano and kept the fans entranced with his distinctive and intense lyrical journey throughout the performance. Songs from their recent album Carnage , as well as other works from the duo from over the years were lapped up by the fans, including Hand of God, White Elephant, Balcony Man, Night Raid, Bright Horses, and Breathless. Experts at creating musical tension, and with lyrics that address the complexity of human emotion, as well as those which are plainly bizarre, those in attendance expressed a broad spectrum of feelings as the they moved through the setlist.

For those who may be unaware, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have been performing together since the early 90s. The pair have played in bands together including Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Grinderman, and have also successfully composed and performed as a duo. Their friendship is clear to see on stage, and seems to be a key ingredient in their enduring collaboration and unique musical creations.

If you have ever seen Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, you have heard these musicians in action. You know the infamous scene where Harry and Hermoine dance in the tent, providing a moment of reprieve and joy amongst all the darkness that surrounds them? They’re dancing to none other than O Children , by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Recently, the pair have composed and recorded the soundtracks for two Netflix productions (Blonde, and DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), and their careers include a vast array of awards, nominations, and EPs, for their work together as well as independently.

The Carnage tour hits Melbourne on November 30th, and you can find more information here .

Featuring new and classic songs, this epic live show celebrates the profound relationship that Australian music legends Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have developed with their audience over four decades.

Nick Cave says new Bad Seeds album isn’t “set through a lens of loss”

He explored how the death of his two sons impacted his approach to the record

Nick Cave performs as part of the Nick Cave and Warren Ellis

Nick Cave has shared insight into his upcoming album ‘Wild God’, and explained that the LP isn’t “set through a lens of loss”.

  • READ MORE: Nick Cave: “There’s no metric that says virtuousness makes good art”

The singer-songwriter announced details of the new Bad Seeds record at the start of the month , sharing the artwork, tracklisting and its moving title track with fans.

Set for release on August 30 ( pre-order here ), Cave described the album as “deeply and joyously infectious”, and said it will see him move between themes of convention and experimentation more than in previous work.

It is co-produced by Warren Ellis and mixed by David Fridmann, and the frontman also teased fans on his blog ( The Red Hand Files ), saying that the album is “full of secrets” .

Now, in a new interview, Cave has shed more light on what to expect from ‘Wild God’ – explaining that while the death of his two sons will always impact his writing, the album itself isn’t “set through a lens of loss”.

“Even when I’m trying to use art to escape certain feelings and sorrows I have, everything just seems to fall into the slipstream of the loss,” he told The Guardian . “These losses are just incorporated into the artistic flow and they move in a direction that is beyond your capacity to rein in. They’re just sitting at the end of everything you do.”

Nick Cave performs at The Palaison November 30, 2022 in Melbourne, Australia.

In 2015, 15-year-old Arthur died after taking LSD for the first time and falling from a cliff near his home in Brighton. In 2022, 31-year-old Jethro, who had schizophrenia, died in Melbourne . The new album will be his first since Jethro died, and both ‘Skeleton Tree’ (2016) and ‘Ghosteen’ (2019) were centred around the loss of Arthur.

While going on to explain how the losses have impacted him in various ways, Cave did go on to add that the grief has made him appreciate life more.

“Joy is something that leaps unexpectedly and shockingly out of an understanding of loss and suffering… That’s in no way saying we’re not affected, or we’ve somehow gotten over it, or we’ve had closure or even acceptance,” he explained.

“I think closure is a dumb thing. Even acceptance is, like: ‘Just give it a few years and life goes back to how it was.’ It doesn’t happen. You’re fundamentally changed. Your very chemistry is changed. And when you’re put back together again, you’re a different person. The world feels more meaningful.”

He added: “Making art is in itself the great expression of joy and optimism, in my view. That’s why we need it. Music, art, reminds us of our fundamental capacity to create beautiful things out of the fuckeries of life.

“The new album is really good. It’s really strong. Great songs.”

Later this year Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds are set to embark on a run of UK and European tour dates in support of ‘Wild God’.

The band will kick off their tour on September 24 in Oberhausen, Germany, and will end in Paris, France on November 17. Six UK shows are also lined up for Leeds, Glasgow, Manchester, Cardiff, London and Birmingham. Visit here for any remaining tickets.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
