Wondering when to visit Hoi An? Hoi An’s tropical climate means that the temperature stays rather warm throughout the year. Rather than the year being broken up into “summer and winter” seasons, travel season in Hoi An is split by “wet and dry”.

The best time to visit Hoi An is during their dry season, which runs from February until July. Those that prefer a more moderate climate (without the rain) will need to abide by the suggestion, the earlier the better, while others prefer to wait a little bit longer and pick the months of May and June.

That’s not to say that if you travel to Hoi An during any other month that you won’t enjoy it – but it’s better if you throw some waterproof clothing in your packing for Vietnam ! The monsoon season starts in September and continues to bring heavy rain until January. It is not advised to visit during these times as there is an increased risk of flooding and typhoons! 

The small city is located just south of Da Nang on Vietnam’s central coast and boasts a charming atmosphere throughout. Although Hoi An is not a particularly large city, there are several nice areas to stay in , depending on your preferences.  

The best place to stay in Hoi An in 3 days or more for first-timers is Old Town, Hoi An. The area is considered the cultural and historical heart of Hoi An and is full of ancient houses and buildings. Many of Hoi An’s top tourist attractions are located here, including the Japanese Covered Bridge.

If you are visiting Hoi An on a budget, then Cam Pho is the place to be! It is within walking distance of major attractions and offers affordable food and accommodation options. Located across the river from Hoi An’s historic center is An Hoi, the destination of choice for night revelers! Although a quaint district during the day, the streets come alive when the sun goes down! 

There are several other areas to choose from, such as Cam Chau which is loved as one of the coolest neighborhoods in Hoi An, and Cam Tanh which is a top choice for those traveling as a family. Regardless of where you stay in Hoi An, you’re in for a treat!

Tribee Cham Hostel is one of our favourites in Hoi An but they’re not taking guests right now. We’re not sure if they’re closed for good but we hope they’ll come back soon.

As a country, the roads in Vietnam have a reputation for being quite chaotic! Hoi An goes against the grain slightly and offers more convenient transport options. The city’s compact size, the high number of pedestrian lanes, and “efficient” public transport makes it easier to get around.

The majority of the attractions in Hoi An Ancient Town are easily accessible by foot and, in fact, motorized vehicles are prohibited from entering Hoi An Ancient Town during certain hours. If you are looking for an easy and cheap way to get around, then cycling is the best! Most hotels rent out bicycles, and there are several bicycle rental shops scattered around the city.

Outside of Hoi An Ancient Town, taxis are readily available and can cost around USD $10 – 15 for a 45-minute ride. Another way to enjoy your Hoi An itinerary in 3 days is on the back of a motorcycle. If you are confident on a motorcycle, then this is another easy and affordable way to get around. However, be warned that the roads can get a bit manic.

Your first day in Hoi An is dedicated to getting better acquainted with the area, ticking off the major attractions.

Day 1 / Stop 1 – Explore the Old Town

A visit to Old Town, Hoi An conjures up the feeling of being transported back in a time capsule. Packed to the brim with well-preserved historical buildings, it’s no wonder that Hoi An, Old Town is the spot to be if you want to discover UNESCO World Heritage Sites!

The best way to experience the Old Town is with a Hoi An walking tour which allows you to walk through the streets and take in the historical beauty that surrounds you. The area is small enough to get around on foot and, in fact, some areas forbid vehicles entirely!

The majority of the buildings were constructed over a century ago. Looking at these buildings, you’ll notice strong Chinese influences from the merchants that used to visit the port area in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Some of the top sites to look out for in the Old Town are the iconic Japanese covered bridge, the Chinese assembly halls, Guan Yin Temple, and the Tran family home.

Tradition is strong in the Old Town and gives a very immersive experience of the Vietnamese culture. Although some of the buildings are really old, they’ve been converted in order to accommodate tourists, meaning that you can still enjoy the convenience of readily available souvenirs. 

You could easily spend the whole day exploring the Old Town, from museums and pagodas, to the riverside which bustles at night. However, to make sure that you tick it off at some point, make sure that your trip to Hoi An starts in the Old Town!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – Stroll Through Central Market

• Why it’s awesome – Enjoy an immersive experience that highlights the unique way of Vietnamese life!
• Cost – Free to roam!
• Food recommendation – Although the market has a wealth of options to snack on, you can also stop by Bazar Café & Restaurant for a refreshing iced lemon grass.

Vietnamese culture has a strong focus on markets. It’s where the locals sell their wares, do business with one another, and pick their food for the day. One of the best ways to experience the local Vietnamese life is to visit one of these markets.

The Central Market in the ancient area of Hoi An is the epitome of one of these markets. Open from as early as 5 am (and only closing at 4 pm) every day of the week, this is a great activity to add to your Hoi An itinerary whenever it suits you. Although, it is better in the earlier hours of the day before it gets too hot or crowded.

The Central Market has been adapted slightly over time in order to accommodate for the increase in tourists, but  it still offers a very authentic experience. Make sure that you stop by the fish market, which is one of the largest in the town due to its prime location on the river’s edge.

This is also a great place to get some local food and at a very good price. Also on sale are the skills of silk tailors as well as souvenirs such as wickerwork, bamboo, and crockery. The Central Market is a great way to brush shoulders with the locals and experience a bit of the daily life in Vietnam!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Relax at a Hoi An Spa

• Why it’s awesome – The best way to relax and enjoy the rejuvenating effects of a local pamper experience!
• Cost – A massage can cost as little as USD $7, with a more luxury experience reaching up to USD $40.
• Food recommendation – Nha hang Khoai Tay is a great Vietnamese restaurant located near The Angel Spa in the ancient center of Hoi An.

If you get funny about personal touch, now would be a good time to make an exception, because you do not want to miss out on a spa and massage while travelling in Southeast Asia . Hoi An has over 150 listed spas, with many more existing offline.

You can easily find an experience to suit your preferences, depending on your budget, time or treatment of choice.

Most spas in Hoi An offer the basics. From body therapies, foot massages, and even nail treatments, however, you can find some more specialized treatments such as herbal steam baths and laser hair removal.

Most spas are open from as early as 9 or 10 am and stay open until 9 or 10 pm. A visit to a spa in your own time is a great addition to your itinerary for Hoi An. Not only is it a very local experience, but it will also leave you feeling great while supporting a large money generator for the local community!

So, whether you want a foot massage, a full body treatment or a manicure, make sure that you allocate some time to be pampered! Hopefully, you’ll be able to fit in another spa experience before your time in the city is up!

Insider tip: One thing to note about the spas in Hoi An is that you don’t need to pay a high price for a great experience. Even the more budget spas offer quality massages.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – Attend a Vietnamese Cooking Class

• Why it’s awesome – Hitting two birds with one stone, educate yourself about local cuisine while indulging in the end product!
• Cost – Approximately USD $30.
• Food recommendation – Tuck right into the tasty meal you prepare during your cooking class!

One of the many joys of traveling to a new place is the opportunity to experience a new and unique culture. The local cuisine of a country is a cornerstone of the culture, and learning to cook local food is one of the best ways to experience it! 

If you only have one day in Hoi An, make sure that you learn something about Vietnamese food! A Vietnamese cooking class will teach you the basics on how to prepare a local dish, highlighting the different flavors that are involved in producing the end result.

After a busy day exploring Hoi An, an evening cooking class is a great way to double up a meal and an activity! During the class, the various techniques will be demonstrated before you perform them yourself. Soak up every moment of smelling the various ingredients before combining them to make an impressive end product.

Depending on where you book your Vietnamese cooking class, it can cost you as little as USD $28 or as much as USD $70 for a half day experience!

One of the best parts about this activity is that you get to take your skills back home with you and replicate your time in Hoi An! Your family and friends will be amazed, and you’ll get to relive a very special cultural moment!

Insider tip: Some cooking classes are scheduled over a half a day and include other food-related activities. If you have the time, you may want to enjoy one of these experiences!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – Enjoy the Thu Bon River

• Why it’s awesome – End your day sipping a drink at one of Hoi An’s most picturesque spots!
• Cost – Free to stroll.
• Food recommendation – Cao Cao Grasshopper is a tranquil spot on the water’s edge, perfect for enjoying a nightcap!

Many days in Hoi An end on the edge of the Thu Bon River! At night, the river becomes a magical, romantic spot as lanterns are lit and reflect as sparkles on the water. Enjoying a late-night snack or cold drink on the water’s edge is the perfect way to end a very full, and very enriching, day in Hoi An. 

If you’re backpacking Vietnam on a budget , you can choose to enjoy the riverside for free as the locals do. Pick a plastic chair from one of the riverside cafes and kick back with the locals. There are drink stalls scattered along the area selling a variety of cold beverages including beer, fruit smoothies and soft drinks.

If you’re in the mood for something a little more elegant, then you can pick one of the more upper-class restaurants and bars along the water’s edge.

Insider tip: there are several boats that offer a river cruise at night. This is a very romantic experience and highly recommended for those who want to sweep their loved ones off of their feet!

An Bang Beach | Tailor Fitting | Countryside | Hoi An Museum | Soul Beach

  With the Old Town done, you can start off your 2 day itinerary in Hoi An on a more relaxing note!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Walk Along An Bang Beach

• Why it’s awesome – An Bang Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Hoi An and doesn’t have a huge crowd.
• Cost – Free!
• Food recommendation – The Fisherman Vegan Restaurant & Cafe & Bar is a great spot on the beach to enjoy a morning coffee or a morning vegan meal!

Hoi An boasts several breathtakingly beautiful beaches and An Bang Beach is among the best! What better way to start your day than watching the sunrise or going for an early morning stroll along the beach as the ocean laps the sand?

An Bang Beach is a short 3km from the Old Town and is considered one of the best beaches in Hoi An. Not only is the beach stunning, with pristine white sands that back on to the water, but it is also significantly less crowded than some of the more popular tourist beaches.

If you want to stay at the beach a little bit longer, you’ll be pleased to know that the beach is fully kitted with umbrellas and deckchairs for use. These props are free for use as long as you eat or drink something from one of the surprisingly fairly priced restaurants!

Insider tip: Grab a bike and cycle to the beach for an extra special experience. The ride is through the paddy fields and is incredibly scenic!

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Get a Tailor Fitting

• Why it’s awesome – Hoi An is famous around the world for affordable and quality-made fitted suits – get one for yourself!
• Cost – Pay about USD$ 25 for a man’s shirt or around USD $100 for a whole suit!
• Food recommendation – Vy’s Market Restaurant & Cooking School is a great spot to grab some food nearby a wide selection of tailors!

Hoi An has a great reputation around the world for being able to produce quality, fitted suits in a short turn-around time. As a result, you’ll find amazing tailors all round the town. The textile industry is booming and you can take your pick from a variety of amazing silks, patterns and textiles.

Adding a tailored fitting for a custom-made suit is a must-do activity on your itinerary for Hoi An! If you only have one day in Hoi An, you may want to extend your stay just to get this done! The tailors in Hoi An are so good that you can show them a picture from a magazine and they’ll be able to create a rather accurate replica – that fits!

Most tailors have at least a 48-hour turnaround time, so make sure that if you are touring Hoi An, that you leave enough time to get this novelty achieved!

Insider tip: Be aware that although tailored items are super affordable and you can bargain in Hoi An, you do get what you pay for. Better tailors, tighter deadlines, and more luxury fabrics tend to cost more.

Day 2 / Stop 3 – Discover the Countryside

• Why it’s awesome – Discover the breathtaking countryside of Hoi An and enjoy a break from the city!
• Cost – Free to explore!
• Food recommendation – Kumquat BBQ Restaurant & Cooking Class is located in nearby Tra Que Village and serves out-of-this-world Vietnamese food!

The countryside surrounding Hoi An is just as beautiful as the lantern-lit Ancient Town and pristine beaches! If you are looking to add a different flavor to your Hoi An itinerary, then a trip to the countryside is a must! 

There are several different narrow roads leading out of Hoi An, beautifully lined with palm trees and incredible views. The best way to get a feeling for this part of the Vietnamese culture is to rent a scooter and see where the road takes you!

If you aren’t comfortable on a scooter, you can also rent a bicycle and get your legs spinning. Keep in mind that Vietnam gets very hot, and you need to stay hydrated if you plan on breaking a sweat!

You’ll come across locals going about their daily lives, villages that have earned a reputation for a particular trade, and views that will blow your mind! Exploring the surrounding areas of Vietnam is a great authentic activity to add to your 2-day itinerary in Hoi An.

Insider tip: There are several tours available that guide you through the nearby villages, giving you a better understanding and increased insight into the local living of the Hoi An community.

Day 2 / Stop 4 – Learn at Hoi An Museum of History and Culture

• Why it’s awesome – Learn all about the fascinating history of Hoi An as a trading port, while enjoying a fantastic view of the city!
• Cost – Included in the Old Town admission ticket (USD $5 for access to your choice of 5 of 22 heritage sites or attractions).
• Food recommendation – Mix up the flavors and indulge in an Indian meal at Ganesh Indian Restaurant.

Hoi An Museum of History and Culture is one of the five attractions that are frequented by travelers in the Old Town, but it offers such an enriching experience that it deserves a mention on its own.

The museum highlights key parts of Hoi An’s history as a port town. There are samples of pre-Cham, Cham and various other port-era artifacts. Included in the showcase are bells, historic photographs, old scales and a variety of ceramics.

The museum is open from 7 am to 5:30 pm, giving you a wide enough window to take your time exploring when it best suits you. The museum is housed in a Quan Yin pagoda house which contributes to the historical appeal. Inside, the artifacts cover over two thousand years of Hoi An culture .  

Insider tip: Arguably the most appealing part of the museum is the incredible panoramic view that is on display from the terrace!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Watch Sunset At Soul Beach

• Why it’s awesome – Enjoy tapas and a drink as you watch the sun set on one of Hoi An’s most spectacular beaches!
• Cost – Depending on the price of your drink (fresh prawn spring rolls cost USD $3).
• Food recommendation – Soul Beach Bar and Restaurant serves the tastiest tapas and refreshing drinks!

If you are spending 2 days in Hoi An, make sure that you add this stop to your itinerary! Soul Beach is one of the most beautiful spots to catch the sunset and promises a relaxing evening to remember!

Soul Beach Bar and Restaurant sits on An Bang Beach, allowing you to dig your toes in the sand while you dig into some tasty snacks! The awesome spot has live music which serves as the soundtrack to a magical evening.

Open every Monday to Sunday from 7:30 am to 11 pm, you can spend as long or as short as you want, relaxing on the lounges. The spot itself is not overly crowded, allowing you to wind down a little after a busy day discovering Hoi An attractions!   

The prices are fairly decent, meaning that you won’t go home feeling ripped off or out of pocket! 

Insider tip: If you are choosing an area in Hoi An to stay, then this is a particularly groovy spot to enjoy!

Tribee Cham Hostel

Admire the Nipa Palms

• Kayak or paddleboard down the peaceful channels of the Thu Bon River.

Nipa Palms, which translated means “coconut palms” emerge from the Thu Bon River and create a tranquil and mystical mood. Locals are scattered along the water’s edge and in fishing boats, trying their luck with fishing. 

The Nipa Palms are one of Hoi An’s landmarks that are known to attract several travelers who are looking to enjoy a local flair. There are tours and guides that can take you fishing on a basket boat, giving you the opportunity to cast your net.

Another way to experience Nipa Palms is to jump onto a kayak or paddleboard and discover where the canals take you.

These experiences offer more than just enjoyable time spent, but also sheds light on traditions, cultures and techniques that are authentically Vietnamese!

The nightlife in Hoi An is something truly special. Rather than raving at a club until 5 am, you can expect the streets to stay busy until the early hours with a different buzz. Hoi An is known to serve some of the cheapest beer in the world, and that coupled with a large number of bars and pubs mean that you can quite easily dance the night away. 

If a relaxing night is more up your alley, there are folk dance performances, nights along the candle-lit Thu Bon River and quaint little coffee shops to enjoy a cup of java! There are also several cool markets that take on a different mood at night.

Some great spots to look out for include White Marble Wine Bar, Before and Now, as well as  Tiger Tiger Bar.

There’s so much to see and do that you’ll be planning a trip to Hoi An for round two before you know it! There’s a little bit of everything here that will live up to your wildest dreams of the Vietnam travel experience.

Cross The Japanese Covered Bridge

The Japanese Covered Bridge is an icon in Hoi An, and one of the most visited spots in the Old Town. It’s safe to say that no backpacking trip to Hoi An would be complete without taking a stroll across or better yet, snapping a pic to prove you were there!

The beautiful bridge was first built centuries ago by the Japanese community and holds a lot of historical and cultural value. The bridge has since been restored and is one of the country’s most iconic attractions!

One of the best parts of the bridge is that it is always open, meaning that you can pop by whenever it suits you. As an added bonus, there are parts of the bridge that have a roof so that you can escape the heat!

While Vietnam is very safe in the violent crime, it’s roads are another story. Perhaps the biggest risk of traveling in Hoi An is driving in the area.

Traffic can be chaotic, so if you rent a car or motorbike, make sure that you have a clear idea of where you want to go in advance. Make sure that you pack your license and rental documents. Extra points if you wear a helmet!

While markets are a popular activity in Hoi An, it’s important to remain vigilant when in these areas. Pickpockets are quite active as the markets are very crowded. An easy way to avoid being a victim is to remain vigilant and keep your belongings close to you.

During the rainy season, there is also the risk of floods. If you plan your Hoi An itinerary during the rainy season, make sure that you pack enough waterproof belongings- like a good, waterproof rain jacket – and try to book accommodation that is not on the ground floor. 

Other than petty theft, opportunistic street crime, and busy roads, Hoi An is a fairly safe spot to visit. All that you need to do is keep your wits about you and you’ll be more than fine!

The best of Hoi An, Vietnam: A 3 day itinerary

Hoi An is most known for its charming ancient town, which has been given Unesco heritage status, as a site of historical and cultural importance. This handy guide covers the best things to see and do in Hoi An in just 3 days.

Hoi An’s historic ancient town features buildings dating back from the 15th century through to the 19th century and they are incredibly well preserved. The old houses and buildings are simply charming and very photogenic, painted in a yellow-hue with wooden shutters and adorned with beautiful, colourful lanterns.

The ancient town is the main reason that Hoi An is one of the best places to visit in Vietnam. But, there’s more to see in Hoi An than just the ancient town. With rural countryside, rice fields, beaches and mountains, Hoi An is more than just a day trip. So, how long do you need in Hoi An? Personally, I think 3 days is a great amount of time to spend exploring Hoi An. This will give you enough time to soak up the atmosphere of the main town, as well as venture further afield.

With that in mind, I’m sharing my 3 day itinerary covering the best things to see and do in Hoi An, following my month-long trip to Vietnam in May 2022.

Before we dive into the best things to do in Hoi An in 3 days, here’s some advice for planning how to get there:

How to get to Hoi An?

The nearest big transport hub to Hoi An is Da Nang. Da Nang is well connected with other large towns and cities in Vietnam, such as Hanoi, Nha Trang, Dalat and Hue.

Da Nang has an international and domestic airport, so flying direct to Hoi An is very easy. It also means that you can catch a short flight between Ho Chi Minh City to Hoi An, which is great if you are short on time or don’t want to visit anywhere in between these two places.

When travelling to Hoi An, many of the buses and trains will drop off in Da Nang, which is 1 hour north of Hoi An. I always use 12go to book my transport in Asia, however it is worth checking with a local guide, or with your guesthouse to see if they know of a more local bus that will go directly to Hoi An.

We took the Futa overnight bus from Nha Trang to Da Nang, planning to jump off at Da Nang and get a taxi back to Hoi An, however the bus driver asked if we were going to Hoi An and told us that he would drop us off at a stopping point in Vĩnh Điện. From here, it would only be a 20 minute taxi ride to Hoi An, rather than 1 hour from Da Nang. I admit that we were a little sceptical at first – getting dropped off at the roadside at 5am, just hoping to find a taxi is a little unsettling! – but we were assured there would be taxis waiting, and luckily there were!

When it was time for us to leave Hoi An, our homestay booked us onto a local bus to Hue which left directly from Hoi An, so we didn’t need to travel to Da Nang first, saving us both time and money.

Is Hoi An worth visiting?

For some, Hoi An is the highlight of their Vietnam trip, for others it’s over-rated. So, let’s set some expectations. Hoi An is very busy. It’s one of the most popular places to visit in Vietnam, so of course there are going to be other tourists there with you. But, as with all tourist hot spots, there’s a reason it’s so popular!

Personally, I loved Hoi An. It was one of my favourite places that we visited in Vietnam. It is a unique place and in my opinion, absolutely worth adding to your Vietnam itinerary.

So now you know how to get to Hoi An, let’s look at some of the best things to see and do in Hoi An during your 3 days there.

On your first day in Hoi An, head straight to the ancient town and meander through the charming streets, admiring the decorated lanterns strung up between the beautiful historic buildings. Here’s an itinerary for how to spend one day in Hoi An’s ancient town:

1. Have breakfast in Hoi An old town

There is an abundance of charming cafes in Hoi An’s ancient town. Ranging from traditional Chinese-inspired tea rooms and rustic coffee houses to modern cafes. Set yourself up for the day with a delicious breakfast. Hoi An ancient town is also much quieter in the mornings, so on your way to breakfast, take this opportunity to wander around and get great photos with less crowds.

2. Explore Hoi An ancient town by bicycle or on foot

The best way to see the ancient town is by walking, however, cycling is also a great way to explore. Many of the home-stays in Hoi An have bicycles which you can borrow for free. Just be aware that the ancient town is not too big and you may find it tricky to cycle once the streets become busier throughout the day. There are also cyclo-rickshaws which you can hire to give you a ride around the ancient town if you prefer to just sit back, relax and take it all in!

As you walk around the historic town, there are some notable sites and buildings you will want to pay attention to, especially if you are wanting to take some photos of the town. Don’t miss these key sights and popular photo spots when visiting Hoi An’s ancient town:

The Japanese covered bridge

The Japanese covered bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in Hoi An ancient town. Framed by vibrant yellow buildings on either side, the bridge is decorated with beautiful, intricate carvings and is a popular photo spot in Hoi An. The bridge dates back to the 16th century and was originally built to connect the Japanese and Chinese communities living on either side of the river.

Assembly Hall Of Fujian Chinese

The Fujian Assembly Hall is a place of worship, dedicated to a sea goddess. There are several buildings, paintings and attractions within the complex, but the most popular feature is the photogenic pink temple gate.

Old House of Tan Ky

The Old House of Tan Ky is one of Hoi An’s most popular and notable historic buildings. The house is an 18th century merchant’s house which still has furniture and antiques inside. You can take a guided tour of the house if you’re interested in learning more about the history of the house and the family who lived there. Other notable houses in the ancient town are Quan Thang Ancient House and Duc An House

This is another example of the stunning architecture in Hoi An’s ancient town. This temple gate features intricate carvings and sits behind a small lake, creating a beautiful reflection in the water. This is definitely one of the most beautiful photo spots in Hoi An.

3. Go Shopping in Hoi An’s ancient town

Hoi An is a fantastic place for picking up some quality, low cost items to take home or on your travels. In the ancient town, you will find lots of art galleries and boutique shops selling clothes, crafts, home ware, jewellery and souvenirs. There are also some great leather shops selling footwear, bags and belts.

4. Browse the Central market

After you’ve finished wandering around the ancient town, head to Hoi An’s central market. The stalls in the central market predominantly sell fresh produce such as fish, fruit and vegetables, however you can also pick up some souvenirs here too.

5. Get something tailor made

Hoi An is famous for tailor shops, so if you want something tailor-made, here is the place to do it. Most of the tailor shops are just outside of the ancient town. Don’t be surprised if you are approached by shop owners promoting their services as you wander around town. Shop around, visit a few and ask to see the style book to see what they can do before you decide to buy.

If you are in Hoi An for a few days and want something tailor made, it is best to go shopping on the first day as it will take a couple of days for the clothes to be made. Make sure that you agree on a day / time to collect the clothes and make any alterations needed. If you are only in Hoi An for one day, many tailors can also arrange to ship items home for you.

Although most of the tailor shops in Hoi An focus on suits and dresses, there are also shoemakers who can make sandals, shoes and boots to order too!

6. Finish the day with an evening stroll by the river

After your packed day of walking around Hoi An’s ancient town, head out for some dinner and a little stroll along the riverside, which comes alive at night!

On the river, small boats with colourful lanterns row up and down the river. The whole area is incredibly pretty as the lanterns shine brightly against the night sky. However, it is also very busy! As you walk alongside the river, every 2 steps you take, you are more than likely to be approached by someone asking if you want a ride on a boat (or a massage!)

It can be a bit overwhelming and a little frustrating as you cannot walk very far at all without being offered something. If it all gets a bit much, just head away from the river. As soon as you are a street or two away from the water it feels much calmer, quieter and more relaxed. It is also nice to wander the streets of the ancient town at night when the lanterns on the buildings are illuminated.

On your second day in Hoi An, venture out of the ancient town and explore the area around Cua Dai beach, as well as some of the suburbs and more rural areas of Hoi An.

7. Take a trip on Hoi An’s famous basket boat tour

A trip on a basket boat is one of the best things to do in Hoi An. (It is also sometimes called a coconut boat as coconuts are used to weave the boats into a basket shape). Usually your homestay can arrange a tour for you and this is often the cheaper option. Our tour was great – we were collected by the boat guide on her scooter and we followed her on our bicycles which we borrowed from the homestay. The cycle ride to the water was about 5km and it was a lovely ride outside of Hoi An.

The boat guide rowed us through the coconut trees, which was really picturesque and beautiful. You can even have a go at ‘fishing’ for crabs in the vines (I was useless – it’s much harder than it looks!). After a serene ride on the water, you arrive at the party! There are several entertainers who ‘dance’ in the boats, making them spin really fast to loud music. You can even have a go in one of the boats as they spin you around. The performances are only short, but it’s fun to watch – just make sure that you give a little tip afterwards.

Also on the water you can try your hand at casting a fishing net or be serenaded by ladies singing traditional Vietnamese songs.

The time you spend on the boat is between 30 – 50 minutes, depending on how busy it is and if you want to partake in any of the other activities on the water. The price of a tour can be around 500,000 vnd (£18) each, however our tour, arranged by our (amazing!) homestay – Onion Homestay , was only 250,000 vnd (£9) for BOTH of us. Yes, it was a lot more basic as we cycled there and made our own way back, but we actually had a great time doing this and it meant that we got to see more of Hoi An. The basket boat tour is definitely one of the more ‘touristy’ activities in Hoi An, but it is also one of the most fun and definitely worth it.

8. Cycle to Cua Dai beach

One of the best ways to explore Hoi An is by bicycle. From Hoi An ancient town, you can cycle to the coconut basket boat tour area, and then from there continue to Cua Dai Beach. This is the most popular beach close to Hoi An, stretching along the coast for several kilometres.

At the time of our visit in May 2022, the beach was under a lot of construction and it was not the most picturesque. Many of the bars and restaurants around the beach were very quiet or closed – an aftereffect of the pandemic. It was not the prettiest spot to relax, so we chose not to stay at the beach, however we did enjoy a well needed drink at a local cafe nearby.

Despite the construction work at the beach, the cycle ride between Hoi An and the beach is definitely worth doing. Cycling along the rural back roads, past rice fields and grazing buffalo is a great way to spend a couple of hours. There are many local cafes, coffee shops and Bahn Mi stalls to take a break too.

If you’re feeling energetic, once you’re back in Hoi An ancient town, follow the river into the centre and cross the bridge over to Cam Kim Island. There’s not much in the way of attractions and amenities here, but you will see lots of rural buildings, and rice fields.

The main attraction of Hoi An is the ancient town, however I would really recommend venturing out into the quieter, more local suburbs to get a feel for the ‘real’ Hoi An. You really don’t have to go far from the centre to get away from the tourists and see the more rural side of the town.

There’s no better way to explore the rural side of Hoi An than by bicycle!

9. Head to Hoi An’s night market

One of the best things to do at night in Hoi An is to head to the night market. Cross the An Hoi Bridge over the river to the smaller island, where the night market runs down the main street. Here, you will find stalls selling jewellery, crafts and souvenirs, as well as local food and treats to sample.

There are also several photo spots which have been set up down this street. For a small charge of between 10,000 – 30,000 vnd (36p – £1.10), you can take your own photos in front of a backdrop of beautiful hanging lanterns.

The night market is not huge and once you have finished strolling around the stalls, wander alongside the river. This side of the river is quieter than the mainland and there are plenty of restaurants that face the water. I much preferred this side of the river in the evening, it felt less hectic and much more enjoyable.

For your third and final day in Hoi An, head towards Da Nang and go on a day trip to the Marble Mountains.

10. Visit the Marble Mountains

Start the morning of your third day with a trip out of Hoi An to the Marble Mountains. The Marble mountains in Da Nang are one of the most popular attractions outside of Hoi An. It is best to visit the mountains in the morning, before the heat of the day, as it does get very hot walking around and there’s quite a lot of steps!

There are many organised trips you can take to the Marble Mountains, but in all honesty, you don’t need a tour guide to visit. If you are comfortable riding a scooter, then you can drive yourself, otherwise you can arrange for a taxi to take you. You need about 2 hours to explore the Marble Mountains and it’s just a 25 minute drive from Hoi An. Our homestay arranged a taxi to take us, wait and then bring us back. The cost of this was 500,000 vnd (£18).

The Marble Mountains consist of 5 limestone mountains, named after the 5 elements of nature: metal, wood, water, soil and fire. The mountains are a historic place of worship, although today the site has been developed into more of a tourist attraction.

Entrance to the Marble Mountains is usually 40,000 vnd per person (£1.45) plus 15,000 (50p) for the lift up the mountain, however at the time of our visit in May 2022, we paid 45,000 each for both the entrance and lift. (I’ve since read that the entrance fees have been waived for visitors throughout 2022, so I think it may depend on the day and who is at the ticket booth!)

The largest cave, and main attraction in the Marble Mountains, is the Huyen Khong cave. Apparently it was used as a secret base for the local revolutionary officers in the war time. The limestone cave is certainly very impressive. In the centre of the cave sits a large statue of Buddha and with small shrines carved out of the stone on either side. It feels very calm and tranquil inside this cave.

The second largest cave in the Marble Mountains is Hell cave, which is dedicated to Karma. This is definitely an unusual cave! Inside the Hell cave, there are various sculptures and carvings of devil-like creatures and gruesome characters!

The smaller caves in the complex are also nice to see, but not as impressive as the two largest. There’s also several tall pagodas, decorated with colourful carvings.

At the time of our visit in May 2022, there was some construction taking place and it appeared that a new pagoda was being built. The site is becoming more of a tourist attraction, so if you are coming to the Marble Mountains expecting it to be natural and untouched, you will be disappointed. However, the size of the caves is impressive (though it is no match for the incredible Paradise cave in Phong Nha !) and it is a great way to spend a couple of hours on a trip from Hoi An. I personally enjoyed the few hours we spent here.

After your morning at the Marble Mountains, enjoy a long lunch back in Hoi An and treat yourself to a well deserved gelato!

11. Enjoy a ride on the river at night

One of the most popular things to do in Hoi An at night is to take a ride on a rowing boat along the river. There are many small rowing boats which can seat 1-4 people. If you are in a bigger group, there are some larger boats at the end of the river, close to the central market. Make sure that you negotiate the cost of the rowing boat and also the duration! Some boats will take you up and down the river for 30 minutes, whereas some journeys only last for 20, so make sure you know exactly what you are paying for. You will be asked to wear a life-jacket, and they are quite strict about this, so any photos you take will feature a rather fetching bright orange life vest!

As you might expect from any popular activity, it does get busy. Don’t expect to have a romantic, tranquil boat ride, but it is fun and one of the must-do activities when visiting Hoi An.

If you have longer than 3 days to spend in Hoi An, or you have already seen enough of the ancient town and are looking for something else to do, here are some other great things to do on a day trip from Hoi An:

12. Visit My Son Sanctuary

My Son Sanctuary is one of the most important historical and cultural sites in Vietnam. A Unesco heritage site , it consists of the ruins of several Hindu temples, dating back to the 4th -14th century. My Son Sanctuary is 1 hour drive west of Hoi An, making it a great location for a day trip. To get there you can hire a driver for the day, join an organised tour , or if you are an experienced and confident rider, you can rent scooters and ride there.

13. Take a day trip to Cham Island

Cham Island is just 15km off the coast of Cua Dai beach in Hoi An and is known for its crystal clear waters and coral reefs. Snorkelling is one of the most popular things to do on Cham Island and there are several boat trips you can book which include snorkelling. If you prefer to explore at your own pace (and you’re an experienced rider), you can rent a scooter for a few hours to visit the various temples and markets around the island. Or simply find a spot on the beach and relax!

14. Go to the Ba Na Hills

The Ba Na hills are a mountain range, just west of Da Nang and just over an hour from Hoi An. Most visitors go to the Ba Na hills to visit the Sunworld theme park. There are various rides and attractions at the theme park, but the most famous are the golden gate bridge and cable car ride, both of which are said to offer panoramic views over the mountain range.

15. Ride the Hai Van Pass

Vietnam is known for being a country of winding roads with incredible views and the Hai Van pass between Da Nang and Hue is one of the most famous stretches of road in Vietnam for motorcyclists. The actual pass is only 21km, however many companies offer a tour where they will take you from Hoi An to Hue, incorporating the Hai Van pass into the journey. If you are planning to travel to Hue, or are heading north in Vietnam, this is a great way to complete the pass, enjoy a day out and also get transport to your next destination! You can also opt to be a passenger on the back of a guide’s bike instead and all your bags will be strapped on and taken with you. (If you are travelling south, you can also do this in reverse from Hue to Hoi An).

I backpacked Hoi An in the middle of my Vietnam adventures as I made my way overland from North to South. We found this township quite unlike anything we had come across in this country so far. Honestly, it was extremely touristic, though nevertheless very beautiful. We stayed a short walk from the ancient town meaning we could be among the action when desired, but could also enjoy a bit of peace and quiet. During our stay, we also traveled around by motorbike and bicycle to check out the best attractions on offer.

To be honest, I could spend weeks here in Hoi An. It is unlike other Vietnamese cities where it isn’t overly busy and has quite a relaxed pace to it. No doubt it is one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam and is well worth a visit. Honestly, I am not surprised that so many digital nomads decide to call this place home. There is everything you could want such as affordable accommodation, fast internet and plenty of cheap eats around.

Though, for the purpose of this guide, and visiting Hoi An as a holiday destination I recommend spending a minimum of 3 days in Hoi An. This will allow you to explore the various landscapes, ap[preicate the ancient town and check out the best things to do here. It’ll give you some downtime and relaxation from the other bustling Vietnamese cities you have no doubt visited.

Hoi An is a stand-out in everyone’s trips to Vietnam. No doubt you will fall in love with the instagrammable locations, cheap food, and wanderlust stays. When you have access to a beautiful room, delicious food, and transport to get around, that is all you really need in life.

Spending 3 days in Hoi An will also allow you to get out of the main city center and check out some of those attractions which are located a little bit further away. No matter when you visit there also seems to always be some sort of festival going on as well where the whole town will be lit up and you can make wishes on candles in the river.

On the first day of the 3 days in Hoi An itinerary we will discover the best of the ancient town. This includes taking a cooking class in the morning, shopping at the Hoi An ancient town, and enjoying dinner alongside the river, as well as a visit to the night markets.

Morning- Cooking Class

The perfect introduction to a new city is by taking a cooking class. This is also a famous activity to do here in Hoi An and is an excellent way to learn some of those delicious Vietnamese dishes. Up to you whether you would like to have breakfast before heading out on your cooking class. Though be aware you will be eating quite a bit, so best to leave some room!

You can check out Get Your Guide for an excellent cooking class that is very popular with travelers. Highlights include exploring the markets in Hoi An to pick up ingredients, cruising down the Thu Bon River, exploring the coconut palm forest by the crazy-looking bamboo basket boats, and tasting some delicious local dishes.

The cooking class itself is set out in a rural landscape. Appreciate the quietness in nature as you prepare your ingredients for the day. You will learn how to cook Vietnamese food, such as spring rolls, papaya salad, and pork in clay pots as you prepare your own lunch. They are also happy to substitute ingredients based on personal preferences or dietary requirements, such as being vegetarian or vegan. I also took a vegetarian cooking class in Chiang Mai which I highly recommend if you’re traveling that way!

Afternoon- Shopping In The Ancient Town

Next, with a full belly from your morning cooking class make your way to the Ancient town for a bit of exploration and shopping. This ancient town is what makes Hoi An so special. It managed to survive the Vietnam War mostly unscathed and is said to have been settled for at least 2000 years. Ultimately means there is plenty of old-school charm, and oozing in beauty, resulting in its UNESCO World Heritage status.

There is an entry fee to the ancient town of 120,000 VND / $5 USD per person . This money goes towards keeping the city clean and maintenance. Technically, the ticket is mandatory for entry to the Old Town, and you will find various ticket booths down alleyways. However, it isn’t always enforced. Though for our visit they did make us line up as it was quiet. Though you could probably sneak past if the ticket attendants were busy with a large group.

The Old House Of Tan Ky

One of the best things to do in Hoi An is to appreciate some of the beauty in the old houses that line the streets. Some of these historic residences have been opened up allowing travelers a look inside. It also gives you a chance you learn about Hoi An’s history through finding out about the families who used to call these places home.

One of the most popular houses is the Old House Of Tan Ky. It belongs to the descendants of a wealthy family of local merchants. It was built back in the 18th century. You will notice a mix of Japanese, Chinese, and traditional Vietnamese architecture throughout the house.

Another historic house in Hoi An Ancient Town in the Old House Of Phung Hung. A highlight here is the colorful entrance hall and the beautiful balcony area.

Japanese Covered Bridge

One of the most iconic landmarks in Hoi An is no doubt the Japanese Covered Bridge along the river running through the Ancient Town. This structure dating back to the 16th century has been incredibly well preserved over the years. This is certainly one of the most popular Instagram hot spots in the city, so it is unlikely you will have it to yourself during your visit.

Fujian Assembly Hall

The last popular sight you should check out while exploring Hoi An’s ancient town is the Fujian Assembly Hall. This was originally a pagoda built by the Vietnamese in the 17th century. It was then sold to Hoi An’s Fujian-born community as a meeting place to socialize. There are a lot of beautiful things to check out on the grounds. Though photographers flock to appreciate the beautiful pink and green gate.

Tailor-Made Clothing

Also, while you are exploring Hoi An’s Ancient town you should consider whether you want to get any tailor-made clothing. Now, I know this isn’t for everyone. Though, this is one of the cheapest places in the world to get handmade clothing.

Once you’re in the city you will notice the wide variety of clothing stores. This is one of the most popular things to do here, so you will be spoilt for choice. Though, understandably, it may be a little overwhelming. Well, a popular choice is Kimmy’s Custom Tailor which is located just outside of the old town. They are well known for their professional service and quality materials. You can check out their reviews if you aren’t 100% sure.

Be aware that no matter which company you decide to go with the process can take a while. You will need to be measured up, a design made, and materials chose. Overall, it could take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Evening – Dinner Alongside The River & Night Markets

For the perfect evening in Hoi An, you cannot go further than spending it in the Ancient town. There are numerous bars and restaurants set up alongside the river. This is the perfect place to come for sunset views, while the township is plunged into darkness and all the lanterns are lit up.

Hong Phuc 2 is a popular eatery you can check out for dinner. Here you will find an assortment of dishes from local favorites, to delicious wood-fired pizzas. This is the perfect spot to relax and people-watch while you take in the beautiful views.

After dinner, head over to the river and watch the town light up. Whether you want to go for a boat ride or make a wish on a candle, this is your opportunity to do it. If it is still quiet enough in the evening you will get inundated with free beer or a 2 for 1 offer by all the quiet bars. You can also check out the night markets, though be aware the prices here are not the cheapest due to the popularity. Nevertheless, how can you say no to those impressive laterns.

On the second day of our 3 days in Hoi An itinerary we will head out of the city and explore more in nature. It’ll be an early morning rise with a tour to My Son Sanctuary before spending the afternoon enjoying the beach.

Morning- My Son Sanctuary

Located in a rainforest-like setting, is the amazing complex of the My Son Sanctuary. It will transport you from the busy Vietnam city life to a Jurassic park setting rich in history. The grounds are a UNESCO world heritage site and it is marketed as the Angkor Wat of Vietnam .

Booking a tour is probably the most popular option and is surprisingly affordable. Though, you will have the restraint of being with a large group. I recommend booking a sunrise tour of My Son Sanctuary. This allows you to beat the crowds, and the heat, while having the grounds for your tour group.

When I visited My Son I decided to do it with a tour I booked through the hostel I was staying at in Hoi An. As it was a sunrise tour I certainly would not have wanted to drive there myself, especially in the dark, and my budget certainly did not stretch far enough to afford a taxi.

In all honesty, if you are a bit of a history buff I recommend taking a reputable tour as the guide will have a lot of knowledge, as ours did. You can still walk around staring at the amazing structure. Though, when you gain important information about relevant attributes you certainly gain a wider understanding and a greater appreciation for the complex.

If you decide to book a sunrise tour it is likely they will provide something small to nibble on for brunch. Though you will want a decent meal once you arrive back in Hoi An. For this I recommend you head to Rosies Cafe . This was one of my favorite cafes during my visit, and with beautiful decor as well as a delicious menu you won’t want to leave. Book A Tour:

Afternoon- Bicycle To The Beach

Hire a bicycle in the afternoon so we can make our way to the coast. Many hotels and hostels in Hoi An include the use of a bicycle with your stay. Though if this isn’t the chase with your accommodation there is an assortment of places you can hire from in the ancient town. If possible I would also recommend hiring an e-bike. Even though there are no big hills, it can get super hot riding under the sun. The e-bike will be able to help you along to your destination.

Once your ride is sorted make your way to An Bang Beach. This is an easy straight cycle 4 kilometers from the ancient town. Seriously it is near impossible to get lost, and if you do, just follow all the other bikes.

At An Bang beach, you can hire a sun lounger and umbrella, or just grab a spot on the sand. Depending on the time of year, the weather could be perfect for a swim. There are also street food vendors here if you are getting a little peckish.

You will want to head back into town before it starts to get dark as there are minimal street lights, and your bike is unlikely to have a light as well.

Evening- Eat Local

For dinner enjoy dinner by trying some delicious Vietnamese dishes and one famous in Hoi An. It is called Cao Lau and Mr Ty who runs Ty Cao Lau has been specializing in making this dish for over 20 years. It is located in a small alley just off Phan Chu Trinh Street.

Enjoy eating alongside the locals as you embrace the street food culture here in Vietnam. Find yourself a small plastic chair and table while you watch the world go past.

No doubt you will want an early night tonight after getting up early for the My Son Sanctuary sunrise tour. So tuck yourself into bed, or perhaps go grab a beer. We have one more day of exploring tomorrow in this backpacking Hoi An itinerary.

On day 3, the final and last day of our 3 days in Hoi An itinerary, you will feel the freedom of the road as we hire a motorbike. Enjoy going at your own pace and exploring as we explore some more highlights in this spectacular city.

Motorbike Tour

The first step of our day will be hiring a motorbike. I was lucky in Hoi An as my accommodation actually rented out motorbikes which made things super easy. Though if you are not lucky enough to be able to do this you will need to hire one from a rental shop in town.

I always get anxious when hiring a motorbike, I mean we have all heard of the scams right! That’s why I always make sure to do research on the company I am looking at prior to hiring. One of the most reputable companies in Hoi An is Motorbike Rental Hoi An . A deposit will need to be paid as security, though they are affordable amounts and vary depending on the type of bike hire. Rates start at around $6.50 per day.

Hoi An is an easy place to learn how to ride a motorbike if you haven’t driven one before. Best to head to a back street for a bit of practice before jumping on the main road. Traffic here is nowhere near anything like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city . Instead, it is a lot more chilled out and relaxed.

I highly recommend downloading the maps.me app on your mobile phone. You will be able to get an offline version of the app so you do not need data in case you don’t have a local sim card.

Tra Que Vegetable Village

Located outside of the popular tourist destination of Hoi An city center and in the countryside is Tra Que Vegetable Village . It is a unique scene here in Hoi An, and a lot of Vietnam, as it is a working vegetable farm where tourists are encouraged to come and check it out.

I highly recommend you take a few hours to escape the center and explore a bit more of the countryside. Full of lush green fields, roaming water buffalos, and locals hard at work making a living. It is the perfect contrast to the bustling Vietnamese streets which lay a few hundred meters away.

With a growing area of up to 40 hectares and over 41 different types of produce growing in the Tra Que Vegetable Village, there is plenty here to see and do. Chill out and watch the farmers go about their daily tasks. Raking, sowing, watering, and picking the vegetables.

Just be aware that there are ‘no motorbike’ signs in the area. This is completely understandable as they are trying to keep the peace. Just simply park up your motorbike and walk around.

Thanh Ha Pottery Village

Dating back to the 15th Century Thanh Ha Pottery Village is rich in history and has contributed to the creation of many amazing sites in Vietnam throughout the years.

Back in the day the Nguyen Dynasty actually invited those from the Thanh Ha Pottery Village to create some decorative features for the Imperial City of Hue . This was an important moment for the people of Thanh Ha as this is when they gained great recognition for the work they were doing and truly fortified their place within Vietnamese History. The cups, jars, bowls, and pots crafted here are exported all over the world.

There is an entry fee into Thanh Ha Pottery Village of $1.30 / 30000 VND. This amount includes a little souvenir which you will receive from one of the houses, but I will leave what you get a surprise!

The Terracotta Park also located within Thanh Ha Pottery Village has an additional entry fee of $2.20 / 50000 VND.

An Bang South

For a bit more of a quiet beach, head to An Bang South. As the name suggests it is just a bit further south than An Bang. Though because of that extra distance, a lot fewer of travelers come here as it is pretty far to reach on a bicycle.

This is another excellent beach you can chill out on for the afternoon. Hire a sun lounger and an umbrella and sit back as you listen to the waves slowly crash onto the shore.

Even though it is not as busy you will still find plenty to do around the area. There are some great beachfront bars and restaurants as well as a few street food stalls to keep that stomach satisfied.

Marble Mountain

If you are willing to head further away from Hoi An you can visit Marble Mountain in Da Nang. Marble Mountain, also known as Thuy Son, is one of five marble and limestone mountains that rise out of the ground in central Vietnam. Each one is named after one of the five elements of the ancient Chinese philosophy: metal (Kim), water (Thuy), wood (Moc), fire (Hoa), and earth (Tho).

On top, you will find colorful Buddhist temples, marble statues, caves, and tunnels that draw in both foreign and domestic tourists.

There is an entry fee of 40,000 VND / $2 USD, regardless of how you get to the top. The options are walking or taking an elevator for a small additional fee of 15,000 VND / $0.65 USD in each direction.

Add To Your Hoi An Itinerary?

If you are looking for more things to do in Hoi An just head on for a few extra ideas:

Hoi An Central Market : This is an excellent place to purchase some souvenirs while you are in the town. Here you will find a huge mixture of products here including silk pieces, lanterns, and other textiles, as well as local food and aromatic spices.

Cam Kim Island: Cam Kin Island is about 30 minutes away from Hoi An. It is easy enough to catch a local ferry here from D Bach Dang. Here you will see numerous artisan woodcarvers who are known for having carved some of the most famous public buildings in Hoi An. Personally, I thought it was a little bit touristy. Though if it is something you are interested in checking out, why not do it.

As with most places in Southeast Asia and Vietnam, Hoi An has a wet season and a dry season. Depending on when you visit can seriously affect how your trip goes and honestly what you can do/see. Ultimately the best time to visit Hoi An is between May and August. The weather is good, but the temperatures are not too hot yet.

September To December: This is the wet season in Hoi An. During this time the temperature won’t be so hot, though you could be in for quite a bit of rain. This is also the typhoon season so the train can last from hours to days and shut down essential services if flooding begins. January to April: This is sort of the shoulder season. The weather won’t be perfect, but it won’t be bad either. It may be a little bit chilly or windy to enjoy the beach. Though the temperatures will be great for exploring by bicycle.

May to August: This is the dry season as well as the high season. During these times temperatures can be anywhere from 30 degrees celsius to 40 degrees celsius.

Being such a touristic town, unfortunately backpacking Hoi An is one of the more expensive places to visit while in Vietnam. Nevertheless, there are things you can do to keep your budget on the affordable side.

This includes staying at a hostel, eating local, and partaking in the cheaper tours. The most expensive thing I did in Hoi An was visited My Son Sanctuary. The tour and entry fee came to approximately $20.00. Though in all honesty, this is a very good price to pay for a half-day tour.

Overall I would budget approximately $30.00 per day for backpacking Hoi An to stay on the safe side. This will allow you a decent bed to sleep in, a few beers, and a scooter or bicycle hire so you can travel around.

Where To Stay In Hoi An?

You are honestly spoilt for choice when deciding where to stay in Hoi An. Whether you want a beachside hotel, city homestay or hostel set in the countryside there is something here for everyone.

The homestay we spent 3 days in Hoi An staying at is still operating and is called Little Leo . This was such a friendly and welcoming hostel/ homestay. It was the perfect choice for 2 travelers on a budget. We paid $7.00 for a 4-bed dorm room which also included a delicious breakfast and free bicycle hire. The lady who ran it was super helpful and they offered super cheap tours which was a bonus.

Extra bonus eas that they hired scooters. I personally would much rather hire scooters from my accommodation rather than a rental shop on the side of the road. This is because this isn’t the accommodation’s only form of income and they rely on online reviews for future booking so it’s less likely you will be ripped off.

Hoi An also has an incredible amount of quite nice fancy beachside resorts. Unfortunately, this wasn’t in my budget, and if you’re reading this backpacking guide it’s unlikely to be in yours. Nevertheless, you can find 3 to 4-star resorts for just $20.00 per night. For such a small step up in price you get a lot more including a pool to relax in.

Here are my top picks for the backpacking Hoi An travel guide:

Da Nang bus the main bus station, train station, and airport to access Hoi An. Luckily it is super easy to travel from Da Nang to Hoi An thanks to it being a super touristy town resulting in numerous transport options available. No matter what time of day or night you arrive there will always be some sort of option available. Whether that is a taxi, a private transfer, or bus there is something for all budgets.

You can either book your tickets in advance using 12.Go Asia or when you arrive in Da Nang There are numerous travel agencies in Da Nang where you can book if you would like to wait and even the majority of accommodation provides will happily book it in.

Hoi An is a beautiful place and if you are wanting to see the best on offer you will need some way to get around. Luckily the landscape is relatively flat so you don’t need to worry about navigating large hills.

I highly recommend downloading the offline map of Hoi An on the Maps.Me app for your cell phone. It’ll be super helpful in navigating your way around if you do not have data. This is one thing I always make sure I have before arriving at a new destination.

Walking: You could simply rely on just walking to get around Hoi An, but don’t expect to be able to check out the beach. Though if you are there just to enjoy the ancient town then this could be the perfect option for you.

Bicycle: Having a bicycle is the perfect way to explore Hoi An. This will allow you to explore further afield and appreciate some of those hidden gems this city has to offer.

Motorbike : A motorbike is a great alternative if you are looking for something a bit speedier than a bicycle. There are plenty of places to hire one and Hoi An has much more of a relaxed pace so there isn’t much traffic. This is a great place to learn how to ride or simply brush up on your skills.

Where To Eat & Drink In Hoi An

There are so many incredible places to eat in Hoi An that are worth visiting. Whether you want to try some amazing local dishes, or would prefer a taste of home. These are my top picks for this backpacking Hoi An guide:

Cheap Eats In Hoi An

There are some delicious and super affordable cheap eats in Hoi An. For the most part, you will find these in small locally-run eateries.

First of all, we have to give a shout-out to Nhan’s Kitchen . This is one of the best cheap eats in Hoi An and is a highly recommended visit. Here you will find packed tables and an excellent atmosphere. Their menu is a mix of western and Vietnamese dishes, each of which they do a great job with. Make sure to try the fried spring rolls!

Another excellent cheap eat I tried out while in Hoi An was Restaurant & Cafe Tuan . Here you know you will get a delicious meal and friendly service. They have some great noodle and rice dishes. Make sure to try the fried tofu with peanut sauce, it was my favorite!

For a delicious local cheap eat make sure to try out Banh Mi Phuong . They have been specializing in making the best banh mi for more than 30 years. With a special sauce made of smoked pork juice, they have truly set themselves apart from the competition. This place was actually recommended by the late Anthony Bourdain. There will be ques, no matter what time of day you visit, but it is worth the wait.

Western Food In Hoi An

There are so many choices when it comes to Western Food in Hoi An. Thanks to being such as expat destination there are a lot of foreigners living here. This has resulted in a lot of demand for this type of food and even a few people venturing out and opening their own establishments.

As with many places around Vietnam, Western food is a whole lot more expensive than eating local meals. This is because a lot of the ingredients are harder to come by and generally cost more as it is imported from overseas. It may not be the best on your Vietnam budget , but it may just help with that little bit of homesickness.

I personally ate at a few different western spots and these are my top picks in Hoi An:

Jims Burgers : This delicious spot is the perfect choice for anyone craving a burger. My partner is a bit of a burger connoisseur, so we happened by here multiple times during our 3 days in Hoi An.

Weavers : For those craving a good English breakfast or even a Yorkshire pudding, Weavers is your place to come. They specialize in serving British cuisine to the masses. Make sure to come here for a Sunday roast as well!

Art Space : Make sure to check out Art Space for their delicious wood-fired pizzas. They have the good trusty favorite flavors, as well as gluten-free and vegan options. The restaurant space is also insanely beautiful.

Hoi An is a pretty safe place to explore with the exception of the many scams you will find in Asian countries. This mainly revolves around your basic robberies and pickpocketing. In Vietnam motorbike snatch and grab is super common as well. Someone may see that your handbag, backpack, camera, or phone is not secure, so they will drive by on their motorbike and grab it.

Don’t drink the water out of the tap. Many hotels and hostels will have water refill stations or minimarts sell bottles super cheap as well.

As mentioned a bit above a common scam throughout Vietnam are motorbike scams. Usually, this involves blaming travelers for scratches and other marks on the motorbike and making them pay for this. To avoid this happening make sure you hire through a recommended and highly rated company. You can also document the state of the bike via video prior to taking it so you can always refer back to that if you get blamed.

The main thing to remember is to just use your common sense. This should keep you out of dangerous situations. I wasn’t scammed or taken advantage of once in Vietnam. Though I put this down to doing my research in advance and becoming familiar with common scams.

Where To After Hoi An?

After your backpacking Hoi An itinerary has come to an end you have a couple of different options of where you could go:

North: If you are traveling North from Hoi An, you could travel to Da Nang . From here you could travel to Hue via the Hai Van Pass, then take the overnight train to Hanoi . Hanoi to the perfect hub, where you could venture to Thailand or Laos via the international airport, or if you are wanting to stay domestic, then hit up Sapa or Ha Long Bay . You could also head to Ninh Binh which is between Hanoi and Hue. I haven’t personally been yet, but I have heard great things, and it’s on my bucketlist!!

South: Alternatively, you can end back down South towards some other Vietnam highlights including snorkeling in Nha Trang , see the sand dunes in Mui Ne , and the tunnels in Ho Chi Minh . Vietnam is a huge country and there are so many things to do here!

You can do endless things in or around Hoi An; however, here are some of the top things that you should not miss.

1. Fujian Assembly Hall

Fujian or Phuc Kien Assembly Hall is one of Hoi An’s few official assembly halls. It was built in the 17th century to serve as a gathering place for residents and travelers from Fujian, China. Afterward, they transformed it into a temple that worships the sea goddess Thien Hau.

Its beautiful gate stands out from the rest of Hoi An’s architecture with its pink color and ornate looks and makes it one of the most popular locations for taking photos in Hoi An. So expect a bigger crowd if you’re not there early in the morning.

2. Japanese Bridge (Chùa Cầu)

The Japanese Bridge is an icon of Hoi An, and it’s even pictured on the 20.000 Vietnamese Dong banknote.

The Japanese community constructed the Chua Cau bridge in the 16th century to link it with the Chinese quarters on the other side of the small river channel.

3. Ba Mu Temple Gates – Three gate pagoda

Ba Mu Temple Gates is the entrance to the 400-year old temple and worshipping area, which was recently restored to its original beauty. It is one of the most beautiful and iconic structures in Hoi An.

4. Take a stroll through the charming streets of Hoi An

As we’re sure you’ve already come to know, Hoi An is gorgeous, and walking in any direction will offer something new and exciting. So stroll through the streets full of lanterns, beautifully painted houses, doors, and many immaculately cared-for trees.

While wandering around Hoi An, don’t skip the riverside. Instead, go all the way from the Hoi An main market up to the Japanese bridge, and then cross over and continue straight to make a complete circle. You can also stop by and grab a drink or a snack at one of the countless small coffee shops along the way.

5. Cycle around Hoi An

Hoi An is surrounded by green rice fields and quaint little villages that you can cycle through. There are gorgeous rice fields on the outskirts of Hoi An, and most of them have well-maintained cycling paths. Go for sunrise or sunset to experience their magic.

The An Bang beach is also accessible by bicycle if you’re not comfortable riding a motorbike. You should be able to reach it in about 30-45 minutes.

Tip : Most of the accommodations in Hoi An will rent out the bikes for free or for a small fee. You can cycle around all by yourself to enjoy the freedom or join one of the many cycling tours with a set itinerary.

Is it possible to cycle through Hoi An’s Old Town?

We cycled through the Old Town in Hoi An, as there were practically no tourists when we were there. Otherwise, we can imagine that it’s not such an easy task to do.

Maybe try going around town in the early mornings, as even though the locals are already out and about, the masses of tourists might not be (unless everyone follows our advice 😅).

6. Shop at Hoi An Central Market (Chợ Hội An)

There are many markets in Hoi An, but the most iconic is the main one, very close to the old town and tourist attractions. The Central Market building itself is painted in a classic yellow color, and it looks beautiful. 

You can find everything from fresh vegetables, fruits, spices, meat, fish, and flowers. It’s interesting to observe the local life, avoid beeping motorcycles trying to pass through, and the smells will be pretty intense. 

BEWARE! This lady will always be very friendly and ask you to sit down next to her and take a photo with her. We didn’t want to do that, but we offered to take a picture of her instead, and she happily posed for it. The second we put our camera down, her smiley face turned mad/annoyed, and she demanded money from us. Of course, we refused to pay her. Later we found out from a friend that that’s her thing, and she has done it for a couple of years already. You’ll easily recognize her as she’s standing out from the crowds with her jewelry and clothing. If you genuinely want a photograph with a local market seller, try to ask them politely and offer something in return or buy something from them. 👍

7. Try the iconic Mot drink of Hoi An

While in Hoi An, you have to try the all-new sensation, the Mot drink, essentially a tea made of a blend of ginger, lemongrass, and lemon. It’s perfectly refreshing and costs around 12.000 VND or half a dollar.

Many people will be sitting around the little cafe and snapping endless photos (especially young Vietnamese) of this iconic drink. The cafe has some space inside, but it’s hard to find a spot there considering its popularity. So you might have to take it to-go or sit somewhere on the side of the road.

8. Indulge in Hoi An’s excellent food

Hoi An is aesthetically beautiful, but it also offers some fantastic and unique foods, like Cao Lau, a native dish to Hoi An, which can’t be replicated elsewhere because of its distinct local ingredients.

Tip : Make sure to eat Cao Lau from a street vendor, not in a restaurant, to get the best experience. The best food of Vietnam is in our rulebook, always found on the street. 🙂

9. Enjoy Hoi An’s delicious Banh Mi

Hoi An is regarded as the birthplace of Banh Mi, the classic Vietnamese baguette sandwich. Grab a bite on the street or enjoy a meal in one of the many great restaurants. 

Two of the most popular Banh Mi restaurants in Hoi An and possibly Vietnam is Madam Khanh – The Banh Mi Queen and Banh Mi Phuong . Banh Mi Phuong got immensely popular after Anthony Bourdain’s visit a few years ago.

We haven’t tried the best-rated ones, but we did have the best vegetarian Banh Mi right here in Hoi An, at the Banh Mi Hoi An Chay stall on the corner of Phan Chu Trinh and Nguyen Hue street. It’s crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and with the best chili paste ever. The chili paste made this banh mi stand out from others for us in Vietnam.

10. Hoi An Night market

The night market in Hoi An is bustling, and you can find all kinds of foods and souvenirs here as it is mainly focused on tourists. It’s located on the small An Hội island that you get to by walking over the Lantern Bridge. 

If you enjoy a crowded market atmosphere, this is the place!

Hoi An’s Night Market is generally open from 4:30 PM until 10 PM.

11. Admire Hoi An’s lanterns

Hoi An lanterns have been an icon of Hoi An since the 16th century when the Japanese introduced them. They are found all over town, especially on the night market. You can strike a pose and take a superb photograph amongst them for about $1, and honestly, it is well worth it.

Tips: There are many shops with lanterns at the Hoi An night market. Choose whichever looks best to you, and be prepared to wait in a possibly long line as this is a trendy photo spot. Plus, you have limited time to take your photo.

Visit Hoi An’s night market after 8 pm when its fewer people there for a better chance of the lantern stalls not being crowded.

12. Take a boat ride on Hoi An’s Thu Bon river

Hoi An was historically one of the most important port towns of the silk road, and it’s connected to the sea with the Thu Bon river that flows straight through the Old Town. So taking a boat ride in Hoi An is a must-do thing. 

The best time for an enjoyable boat ride has to be during sunset or later at night when the whole town lights up. There are thousands of lights and lanterns all around, and even on the boats themselves. 

2022 UPDATE: There used to be endless lanterns on the boats in Hoi An, but from February 2022, the local administration decided to remove them almost entirely and allow just 2 in the front and 2 in the back of the boats.

IMPORTANT: We kindly ask everyone to avoid lighting the candles and sending them down the river. This is a thing made purely for tourism purposes, and it’s hurting the local (and global) environment. In the mornings, we saw cleaners on boats trying to clean the river from these, and it was so many of them that there’s no way actually to clean it all up. It’s totally unnecessary.

13. Visit the Tan Ky house

Tan Ky House, translated to “Progress shop,” is an almost 300-year old house preserved by the family that has owned it for seven generations. 

Though the Tan Ky house is not the oldest house like this in Hoi An, it’s definitely the most well-preserved one. 

You can see the Japanese and Chinese influence in its architecture, and it’s a beautiful reminder of the times in the 17th century when Vietnamese, Japanese and Chinese communities all thrived together in Hoi An.

14. Get clothes tailored at famous tailors of Hoi An

Hoi An is a well-known tailoring hotspot with its history going back hundreds of years when it was one of the most important international ports on the silk road. Many travelers choose to get their custom-tailored clothes done here, and for a good reason, as there are shops here that go back generations, and the owners are masters of their craft.

We didn’t get a chance to do it ourselves, but we plan to do it as soon as we get back to Vietnam. We have many friends who had many pieces of clothing custom-tailored in Hoi An, and they were delighted with the finished products, quality, and reasonable prices.

And if you want to see the process of silk weaving and cloth producing, there are also organized tours taking you to a craft village to learn more about it.

15. Visit the ‘Hoi An vibes only’ at the Sunday in Hoi An boutique shop

There’s this pretty shop called Sunday in Hoi An, and it has this cute baby pink colored room with a sign saying “Hoi An vibes only,” which has become an attraction in itself in Hoi An.

Almost everyone that visits here comes in for a quick photo, as it’s lovely.

The shop sells impressive home decor, so check it out while you’re there.

Tip : Don’t hesitate to get in and ask the sellers if you can come for a quick photo. Everyone does it, and they have no problem with it.

16. Admire the beautiful walls of Hoi An

Hoi An LOVES the color yellow, and countless beautiful walls serve as the perfect background for beautiful photos. However, there are a few famous walls constantly used by tourists for the iconic Hoi An wall photos. 

The most famous yellow wall pictured below is right across the Japanese Covered Bridge, and it really stands out.

Another wall that speaks Hoi An is the more orangey one you can find by walking along the riverside towards the Hoi An Market.

17. Enjoy a day at the An Bang beach

Don’t forget the beach while in Hoi An! An Bang beach is one of the most famous beaches in the area, and one of the best beaches for swimming in Vietnam if you ask us (and we’ve been to many). So enjoy a coconut in one of the beach bars and enjoy this piece of sandy paradise.

The best time to visit is for sunrise, as it’s truly magical. Although beware, you won’t be alone. The beach will be crowded for sunrise, as Vietnamese wake up super early for exercise.

18. Join a Hoi An Cooking Class

Unsurprisingly, Hoi An also offers some great cooking classes because of its delicious cuisine. You can partake in different kinds, and even a few strictly vegan ones exist, which is a fantastic thing because the vegan food of Vietnam is exceptionally delicious and does not skimp on the taste and variety at all.

There are many cooking classes in Hoi An, but we joined the most famous one, the Red Bridge Hoi An Cooking School .

19. Ride in a traditional basket boat

If you go cycling around Cam Thanh Coconut Village in Hoi An, you’ll notice many round boats along the river. Those are Thung Chai – traditional round basket boats made from bamboo, and you can see them all over Vietnam. Here, you can experience how it is to ride in one of these and learn more about making them.

Unfortunately, these tours weren’t operating when we were there, so we couldn’t experience it. But it looks fun.

20. Visit Réhahn’s Precious Heritage Museum and Art Gallery

The gallery of the fantastic photographer Réhahn is an excellent place for everyone who wants to learn something more about Vietnam. Situated in a 19th-century French house, Réhahn’s  Hoi An museum has five different rooms where you can discover Vietnamese culture through hundreds of portraits, costumes, and tribal songs of all 54 ethnic tribes of Vietnam. It took Réhahn almost a decade to build this museum.

The entrance to Réhahn’s Museum is free of charge.

We have not managed to visit the museum yet, but following his work on Instagram for years, we can only imagine the attention to detail that has been put in telling Vietnam’s story.

21. Day trip to Da Nang

Da Nang is a fabulous city, and very easy to visit from Hoi An, as it takes only about 45 minutes to reach it by car.

• Marble mountains

22. Day trip to My Son Sanctuary

A great day trip from Hoi An is My Son Sanctuary, a complex of some of the most numerous preserved temples of the Kingdom of Champa only discovered in 1889 and constructed between the 4th and 14th centuries. My Son Sanctuary is part of the UNESCO World Heritage and one of the most outstanding examples of the Champa civilization that inhabited the area between Da Nang and Binh Thuan province (Phan Thiet City).

23. Day trip to Tam Ky’s Mural Village

From Hoi An, you can visit the Mural Village near the town of Tam Ky. It’s full of beautiful murals, and you can spend some time walking through the village to find all of them. Most are seen directly from the street, but some are hidden in the back alleys.

24. Day trip to Hue

Hue is about 120km and 3 hours away from Hoi An and still an excellent option for a day trip. We highly recommend visiting Hue, as it’s another unique city full of important historical sites and incredible architecture.

Hue is also known for its delicious food because it used to be the capital of Vietnam for 150 years and thus a melting pot of various cuisines and cultures.

25. Day trip to Cham Islands (Cu Lao Cham)

In 30 minutes by speedboat from Hoi An you can visit the Cham Islands (Cu Lao Cham), a biosphere area protected under UNESCO. The islands are famous for world-class diving and snorkeling because of their rich marine life and their rainforest and mountainous landscape. The Cham Islands are also a perfect place for beach lovers, as they offer beautiful sandy beaches.

Hoi An Old Town Ticket

If you want to visit some of Hoi An’s most famous historical sites, you’ll need to purchase a Hoi An Old Town Ticket. All the money from these tickets goes for the preservation of the town. The Hoi An Old Town Ticket price is around $5 and can be bought at one of the many ticket stalls around the town.

Note : The Hoi An Old Town Ticket is not needed for walking around the Old Town, but only if you want to visit specific sites like assembly halls, museums, and restored houses.

Where to eat in Hoi An

Hoi An has endless food options, from street vendors to Vietnamese and Western restaurants. You can find almost anything here.

Here are some restaurants we loved in Hoi An:

• Quan Chay An Lac Vegetarian Food : The lady working there cooks delicious, cheap, and diverse vegan Vietnamese food.
• Rosie’s Cafe : great Western food, vegan/vegetarian options, the best and biggest smoothie bowls we had in Vietnam

• Minh Hien Vegetarian Restaurant : great vegetarian food
• Banh Mi Hoi An Chay : delicious vegetarian Banh Mi stall
• Dingo Deli : a popular western-owned restaurant & bakery with a wide variety of delicious meals, also an excellent spot for working

How to get around Hoi An

The best way to explore Hoi An is on foot if you only plan to be in the Old Town, and by bicycle or a scooter if you plan to go around as well. We’d suggest a scooter while in Hoi An, as it’s the most convenient type of transport.

Note: Driving a motorbike inside the Old Town in Hoi An is forbidden during certain times of the day, so if you come by scooter, you’ll need to park somewhere. The best place to park is at the bigger official parking spots around the Hoi An Old Town. The price should be around $1. Don’t even try to park around someone’s house as random people who don’t even live there will try to come and charge you an extremely high price.

Where to stay in Hoi An

Hoi An offers many different accommodation options, and it all depends on your budget and what you want. You can stay in the old town, by the beach, or somewhere in-between. We’d recommend staying somewhere in-between, so you’re close to both the beach and the old town. The price will also be lower.

We chose Sol’s Villa for our base in Hoi An (super kind host).

We also had a short stay at War and Peace homestay , a unique place in Hoi An, but we wouldn’t really recommend staying there for a more extended period.

How to get to Hoi An

Even though Hoi An doesn’t have an airport, it is pretty easy to reach. The nearest airport to Hoi An is in Da Nang, about a 45-minute drive away. There are daily flights to Da Nang from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City , and now even some international flights are available, so Hoi An is definitely well connected.

You can also reach Hoi An with a sleeper bus or a train to Da Nang and then a taxi for the last part. Both buses and trains from almost all big cities connect with Da Nang.

To reach Hoi An from Da Nang, you can take a bus or a taxi (use Grab for a better price).

Taking a taxi or private transport from Da Nang to Hoi An should cost about $15.

Best time to visit Hoi An

The best time to visit Hoi An is from February to July. Try to avoid the months between September and January because the rainy season in Hoi An has been pretty intense in the last few years and resulted in awful flooding. If you can’t avoid the months between September and January, check the situation before visiting.

In the summer months in Hoi An, be prepared for high temperatures and high humidity. 

Also, try to avoid traveling to Hoi An during the Tet holiday, as that’s the biggest holiday in Vietnam, and everything will be double or triple the price. Tet in Hoi An also means it will be crowded as Vietnamese travel a lot at this time.

Is Hoi An worth visiting?

Yes, Hoi An is definitely worth visiting, as it’s the most unique town in Vietnam. Hoi An offers plenty for any traveler, from interesting historical sites, art, culture, delicious food, and even a great beach and nightlife. However, the main tourist attraction in Hoi An is the Old Town District, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved towns in all of Vietnam.

Hoi An is on top of (almost) everyone’s bucket list, so expect it to be super crowded, as there are endless tours and independent travelers who visit daily. Just have that in mind while planning your trip.

Is Hoi An Safe?

Yes, Hoi An, as well as Vietnam in general, is a very safe destination. Locals here are extremely friendly and always ready to help with anything. So if you’re traveling solo or with a family, there’s nothing to worry about in Hoi An. Just follow the standard safety recommendations, and you’ll be fine. 🙂

Traveling to Hoi An? Below Hoi An travel guide blog contains everything I know about Hoi An. It covered all the things to do, which areas to stay in, what food to eat, and all the useful travel tips when visiting Hoi An. We visited Hội An during our visit to Central Vietnam. This historical city is one of the travel destinations that I’d want to visit again. You will see the fascinating history of a preserved ancient town, the picturesque Hoai River with the rolling boat, and paper lanterns zigzagging from building to building.

Hoi An is lovely at any time of the day but at night, it turns into something magical. As the sunset, the lanterns are lit up the yellow town with the warm glow of yellow, red, and green light. It was so dreamy! How someone could didn’t fall in love in this charming, colorful, and vibrant little town. My visit to Hoi An leaves me with an unforgettable memory that I won’t hesitate to recommend to friends.

Visit Hoi An: A Travel Guide

Hội An is one of the prettiest cities in all of Vietnam. It is a picturesque quaint town located in Central Vietnam. With the well-preserved ancient town, Hoi An is now listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. This historical town used to be an important trading port for merchants coming from all over Asia during the 15th to 19th centuries.

Hoi An has a history of exposure to foreign cultures. Wooden Chinese temples, colorful French colonial buildings, Vietnamese tube houses, and the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge. Hoi An is a great example of the local Vietnamese cultural blend with foreign influence from Western, Southeast, and East Asia.

Best time to visit Hoi An

Weather-wise, the best time to visit Hoi An is from February through April when the weather is slightly chilly and cooler. This is the dry season but temperatures are very comfortable.

While May to August in Hoi An is getting hotter with a few degrees warmer. Although the weather was clear and sunny, the heat can go up to unbearable at 37C. Keep in mind that it can get EXTREMELY hot and humid between June and August.

The rainy season lasts from September to January. It can be annoying but there will be fewer tourists around and the prices are cheaper to visit Hoi An.

How Many Days For Hoi An

One day in Hoi An is doable if you are only interested in the ancient town. But if you want to explore all that Hoi An has to offer, I recommend setting aside 3 days. This gives you enough time to see Hoi An and the attractions nearby. There are many interesting activities and day trips that you can plan in your Hoi An itinerary.

Where To Stay

If you’re looking for places to stay in Hoi An during your first visit to Vietnam, the best area to stay is within Hoi An Ancient Town. Staying in the heart of Hoi An will put you closest to the attractions. You’ll find the best food and explore the town easily.

We stayed at Hoian Central Hotel , a lovely 3-star hotel to stay in the heart of Hoi An. It is very close to the old town with about 3 mins walk. The room and bathroom were clean and very comfortable and everything you could want. They even have bicycles you can use for free during your stay.

How To Get To Hoi An

Hoi An has no airport, and no train station either. The nearest airport is Da Nang Airport (DAD) with frequent International flights and domestic flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and other large Vietnamese cities. From the airport, it is best to hire a car/taxi to take you to Hoi An, with an approximately 1-hour drive.

If you are in Danang, a taxi between Da Nang and Hoi An is usually between around 250,000 VND. You can also pre-book the city’s transfer to ease transport arrangements. Find more Hoi An transport options HERE .

To get to Hoi An, we flew to Da Nang Airport from our home country and then had a pre-booked driver transfer us to Hoi An. We also booked the same private car charter to take us back to the airport from Da Nang at the end of the trip. It is highly recommended without worrying too much about transport arrangements and the price is very reasonable.

Getting Around in Hoi An

Hoi An is fairly compact with most of its major sights being within the ancient old town. Everything is walkable once you are in the ancient town. You could also borrow a bicycle or rent a scooter if you want to explore the nearby attractions.

The streets in Hoi An can be very crowded with tourism hotspots, but much more fun when you wander around.

Compared to Vietnam’s other cities, Hoi An is just the kind of town I’d imagine people would stay in when they want to take it slow. The mix of Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese architecture makes the ancient town very unique. Few streets in the center are closed off to cars and motorbikes, making it much more pleasant for walking around.

Walking through Hoi An feels as if you’re walking through an ancient fairy tale. Take your time and stroll along its narrow streets, old houses, blossoming gardens, ancient bridges, and busy markets. The best way is by exploring the charming old town with a relaxing stroll. You will find gorgeous architecture, historical buildings, adorable cafes, and hidden gems in the old town. It transports you back in time where you can enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

In the early evenings, the old town looks even more interesting. Hundreds of beautiful colorful paper lanterns are lit and illuminate the streets. It creates a magical, vibrant and unique atmosphere. A perfect place to go for a relaxing walk and take in all the beautiful sights on your Hoi An itinerary.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Hoi An old town is filled with ancient historic buildings. There are up to thanks to its 800 historic buildings such as museums, ancient homes, and pretty temples. Some said most of the buildings is dated back to 2000 years ago.

There are several historical buildings and cultural significance that are open for public viewing. You don’t have to pay for visiting the old town but if you are thinking of visiting those clan associations or some of the top temples, you will have to buy a ticket. The ticket costs VND 120,000 to enter 5 buildings within 24 hours.

There are 4 old houses, 4 museums, and 3 assembly halls to choose from. You can visit a museum, an assembly hall, an old house, Hoi An handicraft workshop, and a choice between Quan Cong’s Temple or the temple within the Japanese Covered Bridge. The recommendation as per the Lonely Planet on Vietnam is the Museum of Trading Ceramics, Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, Tan Ky House, and Quan Cong’s Temple .

This is a Hoi An travel guide must-do that should be on your Hoi An itinerary. The iconic Japanese covered bridge is one of the most beautiful but busiest areas in the old town. It’s also one of the first things that come to many people’s minds when they think of Hoi An.

The Japanese Covered Bridge was constructed in the 1590s by the Japanese community to link it with the Chinese quarters. It is more than a bridge and a symbol of Hôi An which represents the fusion of the various cultures found in this city over the past centuries.

You can walk along the bridge on your own as it is free of charge. Or go on a guided walking tour through Hoi An Ancient Town.

Make A Custom Suit

Hoi An is famous across Vietnam for its textile industry, making it a popular spot to make a custom suits . There is an endless number of tailor shops all over the town. From shoes, jackets, suits, to wedding dresses, you can get anything custom-made just for you.

Visit a shop, and choose your favorite fabric for your customized suit. It normally takes 24 hours or up to three days for a tailored suit depending on your design. So it’s best to find a tailor and have your consultation on the first day you arrive in Hoi An. Plan accordingly to avoid disappointment.

Some of the shops are really cheap but remember that you usually get what you pay for. We did not purchase any suits in Hoi An. But the quality and prices of making a custom suit in Hoi An are really worth it!

Shop for Local Handicrafts

Feeling like shopping? Hoi An is known for beautiful local handicrafts . If you enjoy shopping there are also plenty of stores, boutiques, and night market stands selling adorable souvenirs at cheap prices. A wide variety of goods focused heavily on custom tailors and Vietnamese souvenirs, with the latter ranging from souvenir kitsch to seemingly quality art and textiles.

Besides, many local arts and handmade products are made by local minorities and make excellent gifts or souvenirs.

Shopping in Hoi An was thoroughly enjoyable, whether of the window shopping or spending variety. I enjoy window shopping and also buying a little lantern to bring back home.

No matter where we go, we always love visiting a local market. It gives you a glimpse into what everyday life is like for the locals. Located at one end of the Ancient Town, the Central Market in Hoi An is the best choice to know the locals. It is a typical Southeast Asian market and you’ll find locals bargaining for fresh fruit, vegetables, and meats.

Wake up early as it’s best experienced in the morning when it’s most active. You will understand more about the local lifestyle after exploring the central market. And, it is FUN!

Drink Vietnamese Coffee in Cafe

Hoi An is one of Vietnam’s best destinations for relaxing. Aside from wandering around in the ancient town, drinking Vietnamese coffee in an outdoor cafe is one of the best ways to relax in Hoi An. Find a chill cafe, grab a seat, have a coffee, and watch the sunset over this historic city.

You’ll find various Vietnamese coffee on every café menu in Hoi An. The most common is the Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk (Cà Phê Dá) . For Hoi An culinary experience, you can also try the egg coffee (Cà phê trứng) , prepared with egg yolks, sugar, condensed milk, and roasted coffee.

Being a food lover, I couldn’t be more excited when looking for what to eat here. Hội An is truly a foodie paradise with plenty of street food, restaurants, and food markets.

Be sure to try the regional Hoi An specialty dishes when visiting here. We ate a lot and truly enjoy our food tour while staying here. Explore Hoi An night market

Explore Hoi An night market is essential even if just to admire the glowing lanterns. Every evening, the 300-meter-long Nguyen Hoang Street is transformed into a lively night market. The street is located opposite the Cau Pagoda and next to the dreamy Hoai River. 

There’s a busy vibe with about 50 street vendors and stalls, that offer a varied selection of goods and foods. From the handmade jewelry and clothes, and food vendors on the streets to the various entertainment on the street, it was a sight to be seen.

We enjoy the shopping vibe in Hoi An night market and didn’t buy here. There are loads of souvenirs but many repeated in various stalls. Worth walking through for something to do in Hoi An.

Another must-see in Hoi An is the spectacular Lantern Market inside the Hoi An Night Market. Hundreds of different colored lanterns decorate the street and illuminate the stalls, making it one of the most scenic markets in Vietnam.

You can buy traditional lanterns here which come in all different shapes and sizes. The lanterns are made of gorgeous Hoi An silk with super beautiful motifs and stand out with amazing color combinations. If you’re looking for an authentic Hoi An experience, then the Lantern Market is not to be missed!

The UNESCO Heritage Site brings back ancient traditions and celebrates the full moon with the world. Hoi An Lantern Festival runs on the 14th day of every lunar month from 17:30 to 22:00. All the lights in town are shut off and the streets will be lit with lanterns. Besides, floating lanterns are illuminated the Hoai River, creating a magical glow.

Dropping lanterns is an experience not to be missed if you come to Hoi An. It represents the cultural traditions and spiritual world of the Hoi An people. You can go on a boat on the river for a short fairy tale ride. Get a lantern, send it down the river and make a wish. Just make sure to check the dates before you go.

My Son temples and ruins – The most popular day trip you can make from Hoi An. These 1,300-year-old ruins are hidden in the jungle and built by the Cham people, an ethnic group found in Vietnam and Cambodia. It is like a small version of Angkor Wat, Cambodia, and best for those who like to know more about the history. This UNESCO World Heritage Site takes about an hour’s drive west of Hoi An.

Hue Imperial Citadel – Another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Vietnam. The Complex of Hue Monuments is the former imperial capital of Vietnam and features hundreds of monuments and ruins, such as the Forbidden Purple City. 

Da Nang Day Tour – If you’ve had enough of Hoi An, you can visit Da Nang to see what the nearby cities look like. Da Nang is a young and dynamic city with long, sandy beaches. I spend another two days in Danang after leaving Hoi An to enjoy the beaches in Da Nang.

Last but not least, I am sharing some of the useful tips I learned from our trip in this Hoi An travel guide. I’m definitely not an expert on Vietnam but I do hope you find this information useful.

Why visit Hoi An? Hoi An is one of the most popular places in Vietnam. And why shouldn’t it be? The city is incredibly charming with smiling locals, food is cheap and delicious, and there are plenty of things to do in Hoi An for first-time visitors.

Is Hoi An worth visiting? Definitely YES! I love the charming old town especially when the lanterns all lightened up at night. Strolling on the narrow streets, and hunting for mouthwatering food were some of my favorite things to do in Hoi An.

Is Da Nang or Hoi An better to visit? Danang is famous for its beautiful beaches while Hoi An is popular for its ancient town. For me, I am preferring Hoi An’s historical sites and perfectly chilled out. But both places are worth spending a few days of the visit.

Overview: A Trip To Hoi An

All in all, Hoi An is such an amazing and charming riverside town. The old port city still exhibits plenty of history and culture, although numerous people will tell you that tourism is taking over. But, there’s a reason for that. The ancient town is so uniquely beautiful that you may not even mind!

I still love Hoi An and wish to come back for another visit. The yellow town is so colorful and full of things that you would like to explore. Hoi An has a reputation for being one of the prettiest cities in all of Vietnam and the Old Town here has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its 800 historic buildings. There is a definite ‘old town’ feeling here which is like stepping back into the Vietnam of ancient times, and the city is also famous as it was never bombed during the Vietnam War.

Hoi An is also located on the Thu Bon River which is flanked by bars, cafes and local markets and you can walk along the banks at night and take in the views across the rippling water. When you walk around the city, you can take in spots such as museums, ancient homes and pretty temples, and Hoi An also has a delicious local food scene. As if that wasn’t enough, the surrounding countryside of Hoi An is equally scenic and you can easily take a day trip out to glorious beaches or ruined cities.

1. Get a suit made

Hoi An is famous across Vietnam for its textile industry and one of the reasons many people come here is to get clothes tailor made for them.

To that end, you will find amazing tailors all over town and you can choose from a plethora of silks, others textiles and patterns to make your own personalized creations.

Note however that you will probably need to leave around three days to get your clothes made if the design is simple and up to a week for more complicated pieces so plan accordingly to avoid disappointed.

The tailoring industry here is also highly competitive so you will be expected to bargain hard and it pays to shop around so that you get the best deal.

2. Walk around the Old Town

Hoi An is something of a rarity in Vietnam as it managed to escape most of the bombing that razed many other cities to the ground during the Vietnam War.

This means that the beautiful buildings here were spared, and so you will still find some gorgeous architecture here in the Old Town which makes the perfect place to go for a walk and take in all the sights.

The Old Town has now been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is said to date back some 2,000 years.

3. Shop for local handicrafts

If you like local arts and handicrafts then you will be spoilt for choice on a visit to Vietnam.

Hoi An is known across Vietnam for being a hub for beautiful locally made products and you will be able to shop for these in places like the main central market.

There are also a number of handicraft villages dotted on the outskirts of the town and you can usually take a tour to these where you can learn about the historical and cultural background behind the making of these items.

Many of these are made by local minorities and make excellent gifts or souvenirs.

In the handicraft villages you can also take classes such as ancient weaving or calligraphy.

4. Learn to cook Vietnamese food

Hoi An is known for having a number of cooking schools where you can get stuck in and learn all about how to make some local dishes.

One of the more famous schools is the Gioan Restaurant and Cooking School and you can choose between either ordering something to eat here in the restaurant or you can sign up for a class.

These usually include a trip to the local market where you will learn all about the ingredients used in Vietnamese cooking and some of the dishes that you will get to prepare include pho noodles as well as spring rolls and banh xeo which is a kind of Vietnamese pancake.

5. Admire the Japanese Covered Bridge

The Japanese Covered Bridge is located in the centre of the city and is also one of its focal points.

The bridge spans some 12 meters and is famous for its ornate carvings, many of which are in the shape of monkeys and dogs.

This is also a very popular place for amorous Vietnamese couples who come here to take photographs as the bridge is considered a top romantic spot in Hoi An.

6. Visit Hoi An Museum

If you want to know more about the history of Hoi An then you need to come to its main museum.

Here you will find a huge range of pieces that tell the story of the area including antiques that date from the Cham period as well as the colonial period.

There are a number of galleries here that are filled with drawings, ceramics, paintings and photographs and you can also check out signature pieces like large bronze temple bells.

7. Visit Hoi An Silk Village

The Hoi An Silk Village is the place to come if you want to get outside the city and check out the ancient weaving techniques for which this part of Vietnam is known.

The village is located in Quang Nam Province which is around one kilometer from the centre of the city and you will find a quaint village with homes built in the traditional style.

The village is filled with artisans who will teach you how to make beautiful silk pieces and you can even feed the silkworms here and help to unravel their cocoons.

This is also a great place to buy some traditional silk pieces which make great gifts and souvenirs.

8. Tour the Tan Ky Family House

The Tan Ky Family House is one of the most historically significant buildings in Hoi An and is located in the Old Town section of the city.

The family home was built in the 18th century and would have belonged to a family of merchants.

The architecture here is a mix of Japanese, Chinese and traditional Vietnamese design motifs and you can now take a tour of this amazing property.

Some seven generations of merchants lived in the home and you will still find their original furniture and memorabilia here which will give you an idea of how people would have lived in Hoi An in the days of old.

9. Grab a coffee

Vietnam is a country that is famous for its delicious coffee and Hoi An is no slouch when it comes to its own brews.

One of the best places to try the coffee in Hoi An is at Mia Coffee who roast their own beans and serve up some of the most delicious espresso in the city.

The coffee varieties on offer here vary according to the season and all the beans here are handpicked to bring you the freshest and tastiest cups of coffee around.

You can even buy bags of beans here to take home as a souvenir.

10. Shop at the Lantern Market

The pretty Lantern Market is located in An Hoi which is across the river from central Hoi An.

This is one of the most scenic markets in Vietnam and, as the name suggests, you can buy traditional lanterns here which come in all different shapes and sizes.

Many of these are made of gorgeous Hoi An silk and you can walk around at night and take in all the amazing illuminated lanterns which come in a range of different hues.

11. Sunbathe on An Bang Beach

Hoi An has a number of beaches, but locals will tell you that An Bang is one of the best around.

This beach is less crowded than many of the more famous strips of sand in the area and you will find pristine white sands that back on to the water.

If you come here for the day then you will also find a number of charming beachside restaurants here that serve up some delicious seafood.

If you are planning to stay by the beach a little longer then you can also rent a beachside villa here.

12. Sample Cao Lao

Vietnam, as you would expect, has a huge number of different kinds of noodles.

If you want to try the regional Hoi An variety, then you need to try Cao Lao which are brown rice noodles that are mixed with lye water.

This is ash from the lye that comes from the wood on the Cham Islands which are around 12 kilometers from the coast of Hoi An.

The noodles are hand cut and then topped with pork, rice crackers and fresh herbs, all soaked in a delicious meat broth.

One of the best places to try the noodles is at Cam Ga Huong which is located off Le Loi Street.

13. Take a trip to the My Son Ruins

If you want to take a day trip out of Hoi An then head for the My Son Ruins which consist of a collection of Hindu temples that were built from the 4th to the 13th century.

The temples are located to the west of Hoi An and it is possible to come here for the day from the city.

My Son is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it has been preserved and restored after the temples were abandoned for centuries.

The site sprawls over 140 hectares and you can learn all about how Hinduism would have been a key part of Vietnamese culture in the days of old.

14. Shop at Hoi An Central Market

Lying along the lush banks of the Thu Bon River is the Hoi An Central Market which is the best place to shop for handicrafts while you are in town.

You will find a huge mixture of products here including silk pieces and other textiles as well as local foodstuffs and aromatic spices.

Another key reason to come here is to try the toothsome street food which is sold out of carts in the market.

15. Visit the Fujian Hall Assembly Hall

One of the most opulent buildings in all of Hoi An is the Fujian Assembly Hall which dates from the 17th century.

This was built by the Fujian Chinese community in Hoi An and is considered a sacred space.

The main hall here is covered in carved figures that feature around a gateway which is etched with carvings of mythical Chinese creatures.

There is also a large courtyard here and legend has it that if you pray in the Assembly Hall then you will be lucky when it comes to conceiving children.

This is down to the presence of the 12 Midwives which are carved fertility statues that stand in the grounds of the hall.

16. Explore the local countryside

Hoi An is famous for being surrounded by lush emerald green countryside.

As such, if you are staying in the city then make sure that you don’t miss a trip here so that you can take in the rice paddies, hills, and dainty villages firsthand.

You can sign up for a number of tours such as a cycling or trekking tour and you will get to discover pretty secluded beaches, mountain passes and much more.

17. Admire Quan Cong Temple

Quan Cong Temple was founded in 1653 and is dedicated to Quan Cong.

This was the name of a famous Chinese general who was worshipped in Hoi An and revered thanks to his qualities of justice for all, loyalty, integrity and sincerity.

At the temple you will find a wood and papier mache statue of the general which is partially gilded and stands on a central altar.

You can make an offering to the general and a lone caretaker will strike a bronze bowl to commemorate the moment.

18. Try the local barbecue

One of the things Hoi An is famous for is its delicious barbecue.

The best place to try this is along the north bank of the Thu Bon River and if you go there after dark you will find dozens of small charcoal grills set up which sell tasty barbecued skewers.

You can choose from different options including pork, prawns, or chicken, and the skewers are served with herbs and some rice paper wrappers which you can wrap around the meat or seafood.

The barbecue also comes with a delicious spicy peanut sauce mixed with tomatoes and sesame seeds.

19. Visit Phung Hung Old House

If you are visiting the Japanese Covered Bridge then you can also combine this with a trip to the Phung Hung Old House at the same time which is just a few doors down.

The house is known for its ornate and colorful entrance hall which is covered in lanterns and embroidered wall hangings.

There is a pretty balcony here with some spectacular views and a charming suspended altar.

20. Check out the nightlife

If you are looking for some nightlife in Hoi An then the best thing to do is head over the central footbridge that will take you to An Hoi islet.

Here you will find a number of bars and cafes along the river which serve up ice cold beers or other drinks.

If you want to try the local tipple than ask for the locally brewed larger which is called bia hoi and which makes a crisp and refreshing choice after a hard day of sightseeing.

21. Take a boat to Cam Kim Island

Cam Kim Island is located around 30 minutes away from Hoi An and you can catch a local ferry over from D Bach Dang.

The main reason people come here is to check out the artisan woodcarvers who are known for having carved some of the most famous public buildings in Hoi An.

You can find the historic homes of many of the master carvers in the village of Kim Bong on Cam Kim Island and you can also pick up some woodcarvings here that make great souvenirs of your trip.

22. Visit Tra Que Village

Hoi An is known for its delicious fruit and vegetables and with that in mind you can come to Tra Que Village and check out the source in person.

The village is located between Hoi An and An Bang Beach and is made up of a local farming community who grow most of the produce that you will eat during your time in Hoi An.

On a trip to the village you can visit spots such as Water Wheel which has cooking classes so you can learn how the local produce is used, or you can have lunch at places like Baby Mustard which uses the freshest local ingredients.

23. Visit the Museum of Trading Ceramics

Located in a scenic restored wooden home, the Museum of Trading Ceramics is known for housing a collection of artifacts that come from all over the world.

Some of the pieces here originated in Egypt, and you can learn all about the history of trading in Hoi An in the days of old.

There is also an exhibition here which tells you about the restoration of old buildings in Hoi An which is great if you are interested in ancient Vietnamese architecture.

24. Take a trip to Da Nang

Da Nang is located just 40 minutes away from Hoi An, so if you want to get out of the city then this is an excellent choice.

Da Nang is mainly known for its gorgeous beaches, and it is less crowded and more rural than Hoi An.

As such, you can spend the day sunbathing here, or try some water sports like swimming and snorkeling.

You will also find a plethora or seafood restaurants here which are worth the trip alone.

25. Visit Tra Kieu

Tra Kieu is known as the Lion Citadel and used to be the capital of the Kingdom of Champa from the 4th to the 8th century.

Now you can travel here from Hoi An and check out the ramparts and also explore other spots in the area such as the Mountain Church which is located at the top of Buu Chau Hill.

The ancient town of Hoi An is located in Quang Nam, Vietnam, about 30km south of Da Nang city. Previously, in the 17th and 18th centuries, Hoi An was the busiest international trading port in Southeast Asia. However, by the 19th century, Hoi An was in a recession due to unfavourable water transportation. Therefore, the number of international ships and boats passing here decreased.

But also because of that Hoi An retains the ancient beauty, perfect integrity of an Asian trading port. In 1999, Hoi An was recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage. 2. Fujian Assembly Hall

The forerunner of the Assembly Hall is a small shrine worshipping the statue of Thien Hau Thanh Mau (the god blessing merchants overcome the ocean waves) picked up on the coast of Hoi An in 1697. Through the repeated restoration with the main contribution of the Overseas Chinese in Fujian State. The Assembly Hall became more brilliant and spacious, contributing to the appearance of the ancient architecture of Hoi An.

Japanese Covered Bridge is the jewel in the heart of Hoi An. The bridge was built in the late 16th century and is called the Japan Bridge. In the middle of the bridge is a small temple to worship Huyen Thien Dai De. The bridge has a quite unique roof with decorative structures and patterns showing a harmonious combination between Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and Western architectural styles.

Location: The bridge crosses the creek flowing into the Thu Bon river adjacent to Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Tran Phu streets.

5. Old House Of Tan Ky

Built nearly 200 years ago, Tan Ky houses a typical architectural style of Hoi An townhouses with interiors divided into sections, each with its own function. The front of the house is the place to open the shop, the back is connected with the river wharf to be the place for importing and exporting goods.

The house is built by traditional materials and crafted by local carpenters and masonry, so it has its own characteristic, agile, elegant and cozy, and shows interaction with architecture styles in the area. On February 17, 1990, the Tan Ky Dynasty was granted as a National Historic-Cultural Monument.

6. Thanh Ha Pottery Village

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Thanh Ha was a very prosperous village. It was famous for ceramic and terracotta items being exchanged and wholesale throughout the central provinces of Vietnam. Pottery village originated from Thanh Hoa, after acquiring some technical capital, it has formed pottery village today. Main products are utensils for daily life such as bowls, bowls, jars, vases, ornamental pots, shapes of the breeds … with many designs, colours are very diverse and special. Especially, it’s lighter than other local similar products.

7. Thanh Ha Terracotta Park Museum

Situated in Thanh Ha pottery village just about 3 km to the west of the ancient town of Hoi An. Thanh Ha Terracotta Park was built in 2011, on the area of almost 6,000 square meters by the architect Nguyen Van Nguyen who was born and raised in the village. The park with traditional Vietnamese pottery made of terra cotta, including models of iconic buildings.

Also it is divided into five functional areas: Nam Dieu village, Creativity Workshop, Trade Promotion, Pottery Museum and An Outdoor Exhibition Area. Each space has its own story and reflects by the symbolic pictures, objects, artifacts, etc which make visitors can understand clearly of the 500-years of Thanh Ha Pottery village.

8. Cham Island

Cham Island or Cu Lao Cham is about 15 minutes on speedboat from Hoian and 1 hour on traditional wooden boat. It offers travellers a little getaway. It is UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The main island is Hon Lao, the largest and the only one inhabited. Spending one day or two days trip to Cham Island will offer you to have a relaxing on nice wild sandy beach of Bai Ong, Bai Huong. Also visit Hai Tang pagoda for more history of the island. Especially, Cham Island is very great for snorkeling and diving in Vietnam to see coral reefs as well as the diversity of marine creatures.

Travel to hoi an by air.

From Danang International airport. It is the closest airport to Hoian, located in the heart of Da Nang city. It is 30 kilometres from Hoi An.

There are many flights in and out Danang airport daily. So travellers can choose with different options to Danang and then go ahead to Hoian.

From Chu Lai airport: This airport belongs to Quang Nam Province. It takes 1 hour and 30 minutes (80 km) to reach Hoian ancient town.

There are some airlines have the flights to Chu Lai airport: Airlines, Vietjet Air và Jetstar.

Domestic flights: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh.

International flights: Bangkok, Vientiane, Beijing with Vietnam airlines, Lao airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airlines, HongKong Airlines, Singapore Airlines. Some have transit in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

The closest is Da Nang train station. It is 30 kilometres away from Hoi An. It is easy for the traveller to take a taxi and motorbike to Hoi An. There are many trains from North to South and vice versa with a stop in Da Nang.

Bus service to Hoi An is limited as most long-distance buses head to the major hub Da Nang. From Danang traveller can take a local bus or taxi to Hoi An.

Open bus tour companies have a schedule to Hoi An directly. Therefore, it is the best option for travel from Hanoi to Hoi An as well as from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An. And the bus always stops at big cities like Mui Ne, Da Lat, Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hue, Quang Binh, Ha Noi.

When Is The Best Time To Go To Hoi An?

The best time to visit Hoi An is from February to April every year. It rains less, the climate is pleasant. Avoid going in summer because of the high temperature, very hot. The rainy season from October to November also has the disadvantage of wet space due to heavy rain.

Have a beach day

An Bang Beach , just 7km outside the Ancient Town, is one of the most pleasant stretches of sand anywhere in Vietnam. In the main area, you’ll find beachfront favourites such as Soul Kitchen and The Hmong Sisters , as well as a string of seafood restaurants. A little ways down, things get more languorous, and local sellers trade on sun loungers, cheap coconuts, and cold beer.

TIP: Want a little space from the crowds? Salt Pub & Restaurant and Sound of Silence are perfect for leisurely breakfasts followed by lazy hours on the sand.

Shop for souvenirs

Hoi An is known for its tailors. If you need a new suit, dress, leather bag, or anything custom-made -- you’ve come to the right place. Apart from the tailor shops, it’s worth spending a few hours checking out the boutiques in town. Look in stores such as Cocobox (Vietnamese jams and coffee),  Metiseko (fashion and accessories), Artbook (posters and stationery) and Reaching Out (ceramic tea sets and jewelery) for high-quality items to take home.

TIP: OZU by Tadioto is the coolest new retail space to open in Hoi An. Check them out at 54 Phan Boi Chau. 

Taste regional dishes

You’ll probably have some of the best meals of your trip in Hoi An, thanks to the unbelieveably fresh produce delivered dails from farms and seas nearby. Get your fix of authentic local specialities -- Cao Lầu , White Rose , Hoành Thánh , and Mì Quảng – at Morning Glory Restaurant , Miss Ly , or Mai Fish . More contemporary? Visit Nu Eatery for Hoi An's best fusion fare. 

TIP: For a snack that can’t be beat, the banh mi at Madame Khanh are outrageously good.

Stroll the Ancient Town

While pretty during the day, the Ancient Town really comes into its own after dark. Don't miss the chance to stroll this UNESCO-listed heritage site in the evenings, when thousands of brightly lit lanterns illuminate the streets and set the Thu Bon River aglow with twinkling reflections.

Revisit Hoi An history

From the 15th to 19th centuries, Hoi An was a thriving trading port, welcoming merchants from China, Japan, and Europe. Today, a sprinkling of ancestral houses and pagodas are in easy walking distance of each other inside the Ancient Town. You’ll need a ticket to enter these sites, but the fee is worth the opportunity to experience Hoi An’s multi-layered past. Three stops for your list: the Japanese Bridge , Tan Ky House , and Phuc Kien Assembly Hall .

Take a cooking class

You don’t have to be pro in the kitchen to enjoy Hoi An’s fantastic cooking classes . Here you can follow the entire process, from the fishing net and public market to the claypot and frying pan, while learning local techniques along the way. After a full morning of fun, eating the results of your labours is the best part.

TIP: A session at the Red Bridge cooking school is a must-do for foodies in Vietnam.

Sample the nightlife

Leading the pack of places to party in Hoi An is a one-of-a-kind venue, Mango Mango . This alluring gathering place promises punchy cocktails, mouthwatering dishes, and nightly live music. For delicious bar bites and drinks in a casual setting, visit The Happy Buffalo on Cua Dai St. Out on An Bang beach, take your pick of live bands and DJ sets at Soul Kitchen , or its sister venue, Soul Beach .

TIP: If you happen to be in Hoi An on a Saturday evening, duck into Le Fe for a front-row seat to Vietnamese vocal talents you won’t soon forget.

Where is Hoi An?

Hoi An, located in the heart of Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam, is approximately 860 km from Hanoi to the north and 865 km from Ho Chi Minh City to the south. Its strategic location along the North-South axis has made it a culturally rich and diverse town, where cultures from the two regions intersect. The architectural and cultural values of the Hoi An Ancient Town gained recognition on the travel map in the 1980s and were officially designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. As a result, Hoi An has become a must-visit destination for international travelers visiting Vietnam.

When you should travel to Hoi An?

Hoi An is situated in a tropical climate with only two seasons: the dry season from February to August and the rainy season from September to January of the following year. Despite its location in the central region near the South Central Coast, Hoi An’s weather is still impacted by the cold winter in the North. The best time to visit Hoi An is from February to April, when the weather is agreeable and there is less chance of rain and flooding.

As a popular tourist destination, Hoi An is very accessible from all parts of the country.

1. Getting to Hoi An from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City

To reach Hoi An from either of the two major cities, you will first have to land in Da Nang, which is located 30 km away from Hoi An, as there is no airport in the ancient town. You can book flights with airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, Vietravel Airlines, and Vietjet Air, which operate routes from both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang.

Another way to get to Da Nang from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City is by train, with ticket prices ranging from $20 to $50 (470,000 to 1,200,000 VND). You have several options for train carriages, including 4-bed rooms and clean and comfortable V.I.P 2-bed rooms. The travel time varies from 14 to 20 hours, depending on the type of train you choose. If you have time and want to explore the country on the move, taking the train is a great option. You can book train tickets on the official website of the Vietnam Railway Corporation.

Buses are also an option for getting to Da Nang from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, with ticket prices ranging from $20 to $30 (470,000 to 700,000 VND). However, keep in mind that this mode of travel can be tiring and take a long time. Some recommended bus companies are Futabus, Phuc Thuan Thao Bus, and Quoc Hung Bus.

2. Getting to Hoi An from Da Nang

As soon as you arrive in Da Nang, there is a wide range of options to get to Hoi An.

Travel by bus

Bus number 1 from Da Nang can take you directly to the Hoi An Bus Station. You can refer to the bus route below to find the nearest bus stop.

• Advantages: inexpensive
• Disadvantages: long travel time (70-80 minutes), often crowded with limited space for luggage
• Cost: 30,000 VND ($1.25)
• Timing: buses run every 20 minutes from 5:30 AM to 6 PM
• Route: Da Nang Central Bus Station to Ton Duc Thang, Dien Bien Phu, Ha Huy Tap, Ha Khe, Nguyen Tat Thanh, Ong Ich Khiem, Le Duan, Chi Lang, Hung Vuong, Tran Phu, Trung Nu Vuong, Nui Thanh, Duy Tan, Tran Thi Ly Bridge, Ngu Hanh Son (The Marble Mountains), Le Van Hien, Tran Dai Nghia, and finally Hoi An Bus Station.

Travel by taxi

Travelers can book a taxi on arrival in Da Nang City or the airport to go directly to Hoi An.

• Advantages: convenient, comfortable, and flexible
• Disadvantages: slightly expensive
• Cost: 400,000 VND – 500,000 VND ($17 – $21) for a 4-seat car or 500,000 VND – 600,000 VND ($21 – $25) for a 7-seater
• Timing: unlimited, with a one-way trip taking about 45-55 minutes (depending on traffic conditions).

Travel by motorbike

Riding a motorcycle can be a great option if you’re comfortable with it. Note that a motorcycle license is required. The route from Da Nang to Hoi An is scenic with good road conditions.

• Advantages: flexible and interactive, with a great local experience of riding a motorbike
• Disadvantages: a motorcycle license is required
• Cost: 100,000 VND – 120,000 VND ($5) to rent a bike for one day
• Timing: a one-way trip takes about 45-55 minutes (the time may vary depending on the number of stops along the way, which you may make due to the stunning views along the route).

Generally, there are many cost-effective and comfortable options for traveling from Da Nang to Hoi An. The choice will depend on your budget, time availability, and desired experience. Regardless of your method of transportation, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind experience and when you reach the historic town of Hoi An, you’ll find that it was worth the journey.

Aside from exploring Hoi An’s attractions and culinary offerings, there are several recommended activities to fully experience the town.

Watch the Hoi An Memories Show

The “Memories of Hoi An” is a stunning outdoor art performance featuring over 500 professional actors. It takes place on a massive stage measuring up to 25,000 square meters, and presents the history and cultural beauty of Hoi An through its costumes, dances, and props. This show will give you a breathtaking experience of light, sound, and movement.

Release paper flower lanterns

Hoi An takes on a mysterious beauty, particularly at night. One of the most profound experiences for visitors here is releasing lanterns on the tranquil Hoai River. You can purchase a lantern for approximately 20,000 VND and join the local community in this peaceful and sacred tradition.

Take an evening boat ride on the Hoai River

The Hoai River is a branch of the Thu Bon River that runs through Hoi An and is a symbol of the historic ancient town. Young people, particularly couples in love, enjoy rowing on the river at night and releasing flower lanterns as they believe the lanterns are witnesses to their commitment and carry their wishes. The best time to take a boat ride is from 4 PM to 5 PM, just before sunset, allowing you to take in the sunset view before being captivated by the magical lights along the river at night. A boat ride can accommodate 2 to 5 passengers and typically costs 150,000 VND ($7) per person for a 30-minute ride.

Join in traditional games

Every night, Hoi An attracts thousands of tourists for a stroll through the heart of the old town. In addition to sightseeing and trying the town’s specialties, visitors can also participate in the traditional folk games of the Vietnamese people. Games such as bingo and chess are hosted by a passionate team of locals, who use traditional costumes and instruments, making the experience exciting and entertaining.

Savor the coffee

While it may be a familiar refrain that you should try coffee when visiting Vietnam, this is especially true in Hoi An. The coffee here is not just a drink but an experience, with atmospheric coffeehouses featuring iconic yellow color themes. Each coffeehouse exudes a nostalgic and vintage ambiance that is difficult to describe in words. You must visit, sit on one of the small bamboo chairs, and savor a rich coffee or chocolate drink while immersing yourself in the peaceful and ancient atmosphere to truly capture the essence of this charming town.

How to get from Hanoi to Hoi An 

Inspired to visit the UNESCO-designated beauty spot of Hoi An ? Happily, there are a few ways to get there from Hanoi , the capital of Vietnam. You can make a decision based on your budget, trip length, and how you prefer to travel.

• By plane : to get from Hanoi to Hoi An by plane, you must fly to Da Nang, then take a road transfer to Hoi An.
• By train : as with the plane option, you take a train to Da Nang and complete the last stage of your journey by road.
• By bus : to forego having to stop in Da Nang, you can take a sleeper bus all the way from Hanoi to Hoi An.
• By car : to experience the open road, driving will take around 17 hours in toal. Best to schedule an overnight stay en route.

How far is Hoi An from Hanoi? 

Hoi An is located some 798 kilometres south of Hanoi. As a general guide, if you take a bus, or choose to drive, you’re looking at spending at least 17 hours on the road.

So, if you decide to go by car, you’ll want to plan some cool stops into your itinerary. More on those later.

What's the quickest way to get from Hanoi to Hoi An? 

With a flight time of 1 hour 20 minutes to Da Nang — plus a 45-90-minute road transfer to Hoi An — travelling by plane is the fastest way to get from Hanoi to Hoi An.

The second quickest way is to take a train, which involves a 17-hour rail journey to Da Nang, plus up to 1.5 hours on the road. 

Meanwhile, a direct bus from Hanoi to Hoi An takes around 18 hours. You could drive the route yourself in 17+ hours. That said, you'll definitely need to stop en route.

If you’re short on time, or not keen on long journeys, you’ll want to take a plane to get from Hanoi to Hoi An. With dozens of daily flights, you’ll have lots of flexibility around when you travel. 

From Da Nang International Airport, you’ll need to transfer by road to Hoi An. Shared shuttle bus services are available from around $6. A private taxi will cost from $15.

Duration: 17 hours | Cost: from $20

As with the plane option, if you decide to get from Hanoi to Hoi An by rail, you’ll can only get as far as Da Nang. 

With around five services a day, the train journey takes around 17 hours. From Da Nang, the last leg of the journey must be done by road.

The most basic (“hard”) seats cost from $20. For a “soft” aeroplane-style seat, expect to pay around $22. Alternatively, you could book a hard or soft sleeper berth. The most comfortable option will set you back around $40.

Duration: 18 hours | Cost: from $20

Being the only direct way to get from Hanoi to Hoi An — no need to stop in Da Nang with this option ­— booking a sleeper bus strikes a balance between cost and journey time.

Offering allocated reclining seats, or padded flatbeds, plus wi-fi, these are better than your average bus. Just bear in mind the journey time of up to 18 hours, and be aware that some bumpy roads make it tricky to sleep. 

For a happy medium, check out the “Open Tour” ticket option. This allows you to hop off the bus at major locations along the route. Before hopping back on, reserve a seat for the next leg of your trip.

Not recommended as an option to try in a single day, using a car to get from Hanoi to Hoi An could suit travellers who like to get off the beaten track.

It’s certainly true that the route between Hanoi and Hoi An offers ample opportunities to see a stack of exciting stuff. So, why not plan to overnight somewhere as you drive?

For example, you could check out Ninh Binh’s Van Long Nature Reserve, or Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The latter of which is known for its ancient limestone karsts and colossal network of enchanting caves. 

You could also hang out in the Imperial City of Hue for a while — a place renowned for its palaces and temples.

In a word, yes! Atmospheric and packed with sights, Hoi An is richly rewarding destination.

Beyond its historic landmarks and charm — narrow streets of wooden-fronted buildings capped with mossy tiles — Hoi An’s location along  Vietnam's central coast means it’s within reach of beautiful beaches. 

Add to that the Thu Bon River, a fabulous food scene, celebrated tailoring services, and excellent arts and crafts, and Hoi An amounts to an all-round winner.
