Journey Returning to El Paso Area with Toto to Celebrate 50th Anniversary

When the "Lights" go down at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces early next spring, El Paso-area fans will "Faithfully" welcome one of the most popular rock bands of all time with "Open Arms".

Journey is coming to the Borderland in 2024 for a night filled with all the fist-pumping, cell phone-light-waving radio hits you still know and love, like “Separate Ways,” “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin,’” “Who’s Crying Now,” and, of course, “Don’t Stop Believin”.

Don’t Stop Believin’

A Journey concert wouldn’t be complete without one of the most enduring rock anthems of not just the ‘80s but of all time.

“Don’t Stop Believin’” has become such a part of American culture it has been inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.

Journey's signature song was one of 25 recordings in 2022 deemed “as audio treasures worthy of preservation for all time based on their cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage.”

Toto Joins the Freedom Tour Trek

These days, the touring lineup for Journey consists of guitarist and original member Neil Schon, keyboardists Jonathan Cain who joined the band in 1980, drummer Deen Castronovo, bassist Todd Jensen, and Arnel Pineda handling vocal duties.

Fun fact: at this point in the band's lifespan the Steve Perry soundalike has been their lead singer longer than the original vocalist.

Joining the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band on their 50th Anniversary Freedom Tour 2024 is Toto, which is nearing its own 50th anniversary. As far as opening bands go, you can't do much better than Toto.

I saw them years ago when they did a show at Cohen Stadium with Yes and it was one hit song after another. “Africa,” “Hold the Line,” “Rosanna,” "I'll Supply the Love," "I Won't Hold You Back"... They do not disappoint.

El Paso college students arrested in bridge drug bust after answering border job ad

Drug cartel job ads trap 'mules' in el paso, juárez border.

journeys jobs el paso

A pair of El Paso college students are in deep trouble after being arrested at the border on drug smuggling charges after replying to a job ad on social media.

The job scheme is a long-standing tactic of Mexican drug cartels to recruit "mules" among border commuters to carry drugs over the international bridges, U.S. law enforcement officials said.

The students claimed they had been hired to transport money from Juárez to El Paso, but instead a concealed load of fentanyl was found in their car on March 26 at the Bridge of the Americas, court officials said at an online teleconference detention hearing last week.

Borderland: El Paso DA challenges ruling office wasn't ready to handle migrant 'border riot' cases

The young man and woman were both arrested by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office on state charges of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance and remain in the El Paso County Jail.

Under Texas' tougher new fentanyl laws enacted last year, anyone caught with more than 400 grams could face a 15-year minimum prison sentence.

Since last summer, there's been a rise in similar arrests at the border of drivers claiming they didn't know there were drugs concealed in their vehicles after answering postings about job offers on Facebook, a spokesperson for U.S. Homeland Security Investigations in El Paso said.

College students arrested in border drug case

The man and woman are Juárez residents with student visas who regularly cross the border to attend school in El Paso, public defense attorney Maya Quevedo said at their bond hearings.

The man is a graduate of the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez, known as UACJ, and a doctoral student at the University of Texas at El Paso. The woman attends UACJ and is learning English at El Paso Community College, Quevedo said.

The students — who don't have criminal records — embarked in a perilous situation that was “impossible to stop" once it went into motion, Quevedo said.

The El Paso Times is not publishing the students' names because the defense claimed the victims were duped.

Shady job offer, fentanyl bust at Bridge of the Americas

The bespectacled students told officers that they had replied to an ad on Facebook for a job offer to transport money to El Paso, according to a retelling of the case by prosecutors and defense attorneys at the hearing.

They met with a man at a Denny’s restaurant in Juárez and left the keys in their car, which was then supposedly taken to a car dealership to install a GPS device for "security reasons." The car was later returned to the restaurant parking lot.

The recruiter made copies of their identification cards and told them that he had many people working for him, which the defense attorney surmised could be veiled threat meaning the newly-hired couriers were being watched. The man escorted them to near the border and instructed the students to drive to a location in El Paso.

The woman allegedly told officers that she had concerns but that she needed the money so she decided to go through with the job, court officials said. It was not disclosed how much the students were paid, but typically drivers in border smuggling attempts get paid a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars.

During a border inspection at the Bridge of the Americas, an X-ray scan detected anomalies in the car's back doors. Over a pound of fentanyl was found and seized and the students were arrested. The exact amount of fentanyl wasn't disclosed.

The arrests were made by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, which will often handle border bust arrests when the amount of drugs is small. The students' case is pending in court.

Now hiring: Drug cartels recruit on social media

Drug cartels are always looking for students, businesspeople and other frequent border crossers to transport drugs hidden among the long lines of daily binational traffic, a spokesperson for U.S. Homeland Security Investigations in El Paso said.

Drug-traffickers will advertise for jobs such as money couriers for businesses such as " casas de cambio ," money exchange houses, the HSI spokesperson said. The ads seek persons who are able to legally enter the United States.

The drivers who have been arrested include U.S. citizens, legal U.S. residents and Mexican citizens with visas. The drugs include fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamines, marijuana and cocaine.

Homeland Security Investigations: 'Willful blindness' is not defense

Decades ago, the ads would be in the classified sections of Juárez newspapers, but are now mostly on Facebook and other social media, HSI said.

The “recruiter” will send a direct message to the job seeker and will set up a job "interview." HSI warns that legitimate businesses do not interview people in parking lots, nor take possession of the job-seeker's vehicle, which should be a major red flag. The vehicle is taken to conceal drugs inside it.

HSI advises job seekers to research the name and address of the company and obtain the employer’s information.

The allure of "easy money" can lead to "willful blindness" to signs of illegal activity, which is is not a defense in court, the HSI spokesperson warned.

What happens if you get caught smuggling drugs at border?

Punishment can vary greatly depending on the amount and types of drugs that a person is arrested with at the U.S. border.

Beside the consequences in the criminal justice system of becoming involved in drug trafficking, a smuggling arrest can severely impact immigration and border-crossing privileges.

History: Immigration inspector killed in standoff with tequila smugglers in 1919

Mexican citizens can lose their border-crossing cards even if they are not criminally charged. If convicted, legal U.S. residents can be stripped of their residency status and be deported, HSI officials said.

There have been cases where a teenager is arrested with drugs in the border express lane and the teen's whole family loses express-lane privileges, an HSI spokesperson said.

Regardless of citizenship, the Department of Homeland Security keeps records of persons associated with drug smuggling attempts, which could result in increase scrutiny and intensified inspections when entering the U.S. in the future.

Anyone with information on smuggling activity may call the HSI tip line at 866-347-2423.

Journey to justice: Tornillo family finds closure after conviction in loved one’s murder

journeys jobs el paso

FABENS, Texas (KVIA) -- After nearly six years, an El Paso-area man was convicted of capital murder, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to life in prison, plus 40 years, for a shooting that happened in 2018.

According to affidavits obtained by ABC-7, Eduardo Garza Santillana was employed by the murder victim, 64-year-old Miguel Rivera. However, documents say about two weeks before the shooting, Rivera fired Garza because he believed Garza was stealing from him.

Documents indicate that on July 25, 2018, El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPCSO) Detectives were called out to 21443 Alameda to investigate a possible homicide. Deputies found two men, later identified as Rivera and his ranch hand, with gunshot wounds. Both men were taken to Del Sol Medical Center, where Rivera was later pronounced dead. His employee, however, survived.

After a seven-month-long investigation, EPCSO arrested Garza. According to court documents, Garza pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Rivera's daughter told ABC-7, it was not until March of this year that Garza's trial began.

After being presented with evidence, a jury found Garza, 46, guilty of the charges.

ABC-7 sat down with Rivera's daughter to talk about her father, and about the family's journey to justice.

"No sentence would ever be enough, you know, for what he did to my dad. But that's just something that we're going to have to accept," said Marlene Rivera.

Marlene said having to sit through Garza's trial years after the murder was like reopening a wound.

"To sit in that courtroom and listen to the testimonies, listen to everything in detail of what happened was very horrible," she said.  "Seeing the individual, you know, not have any remorse... him standing there, you know, like with no care in the world... I looked at the individual and, you know, I told him how we felt and what he did to us, how it hurt us and how it affected us. Never looked up at me once."

Now, Marlene and her family honor Miguel by sharing photos and videos of him, and talking about him with his grandkids.

"Mike Rivera, was the most humblest man that you could have ever met. He was a very caring, giving person amongst all," she said.
