13 Best Places to Visit for Halloween Around the World

From Mexico to Romania, here are 13 of the best places to visit for Halloween.

best places to travel halloween

The spooky season is almost here, and there's no better way to honor it than with a trip to a place primed and ready to celebrate ghosts and goblins.

Now's the time to lean into sweater season, the changing leaves, and all things pumpkin — both flavored and decor related. And don't worry — just because it's Halloween doesn't mean you always need to be in for a fright. Here are 13 spooky and fun places to visit for Halloween around the globe.

Salem, Massachusetts

It's almost impossible to separate Salem from Halloween. The coastal Massachusetts community was the site of the Salem Witch Trials, beginning in 1692, which led to the hanging of 19 men and women. It's a place where the air is thick with spirits, but around Halloween, it's a destination filled with merriment too. Each October, the town puts on Salem Haunted Happenings, which includes a parade, film nights, a costume ball, and more, and you're all invited to join .

London, England

London has all the historical trappings needed for an epic Halloween season. It's a place brimming with ghost stories, and the best spot to experience this to the fullest is the Tower of London . It was here that several notable figures were put to death, including Anne Boleyn, the former Queen of England and second wife of Henry VIII, who is said to still roam the halls. Visitors can tour the Tower of London any time of year, but it's just got that extra spooky feeling in October. Visit for a Twilight Tour for an eerie vibe.

Boyne Valley, Ireland

What better place to celebrate Halloween than in the place where it began? As History.com explains, the Halloween tradition began with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain . At the time of its origin, people would wear costumes to ward off ghosts, which means not much has changed (though we're sure they didn't have allegiances to different candy at the time). Now Ireland celebrates with festivals throughout the month of October, including the Púca Halloween Festival , which honors the Celtic new year with music, art, and plenty of sweet treats.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivities are serious business in Oaxaca. Though it's a festival for the dead, it's by no means a horror show. As Travel + Leisure previously explained, the event is in honor of those who've passed from this world to the next and is a way to keep their spirit alive today. The celebration takes place over two days, with families decorating the graves of their deceased loved ones and crafting ornate altars at home to further honor them. Travelers can join the revelry in the form of parades and parties throughout the town of San Miguel de Allende, which keeps the festivities going through November 2.

Transylvania, Romania

As the home of Count Dracula, Transylvania has a lot to live up to during the Halloween season, but it more than delivers on its spooky offerings. Travelers to Transylvania can visit Bran Castle , the home of the mythical count, which is open every day for tours. The castle even hosts a yearly Halloween bash that includes a nighttime tour, a party, and an open bar.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is a town known for its revelry. Yes, its Mardi Gras celebrations are second to none, but its Halloween parties aren't too shabby either. In October, the city busts out its decorations and its best costumes for parades and parties galore. Don't miss the ghost tours in the French Quarter if you're looking to send a few shivers down your spine before joining the festivities.

Paris, France

Looking for a Halloween event that's très chic? Head to Paris. The City of Lights may not be the place where you'll find the typical trick-or-treat crowd, but what you will find is La Toussaint , or All Saints' Day, a day to remember friends and family who have passed, which is both a national and Catholic holiday. Like Day of the Dead in Mexico, families take this day to honor their loved ones by visiting their graves and placing flowers on top. There are more light-hearted events throughout the city, including parties at Disneyland Paris and Le Manoir de Paris, arguably the biggest and coolest haunted house in Europe.

Scotland, like Ireland, has strong ties to Halloween's past. As Visit Scotland explained, the name Halloween comes from the Scottish shortening of "All Hallows' Eve." While you can certainly attend any number of events to honor the day, for a longer journey, try exploring the nation's Ghost Trail, a map of 15 locations around the nation that are said to be some of the most haunted spots on the planet. End the tour at the Samhuinn Fire Festival in Edinburgh for a delightful conclusion.

Venice and Borgo a Mozzano, Italy

Italy isn't exactly a Halloween-crazed nation, but one place you'll find plenty of ghoulish fun is in Venice. It too is a destination well-known among the ghost hunting circuit, especially on the island Poveglia. The island once acted as a quarantine zone for people suffering from the plague and was even used as an insane asylum in the early 20th century, making it an absolute hub for paranormal activity. As for the parties, you'll have to head to the town of Borgo a Mozzano, which sits just north of Lucca. There, you'll find a massive annual Halloween bash on the appropriately named Devil's Bridge .

Hong Kong loves a good party, and Halloween is no exception. Like other destinations on this list, it's not really a place where you'll find trick-or-treaters on the street, but you will find festive events nonetheless, especially in places like Hong Kong Disneyland , which goes toe-to-toe with its global counterparts for the season. Hong Kong's other theme park, Ocean Park , also throws an annual bash that's not to be missed, and you'll typically find a plethora of happenings in Lan Kwai Fong, the city's famed party district, that are all worthy of a visit (though things have been uncharacteristically quiet here due to the pandemic, it appears that may be changing .)

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah, Georgia is the place to go in the U.S. if you want to be almost guaranteed a ghost sighting. The southern city is brimming with ghost stories thanks to haunted hotels, buildings, bars, and more, which can all be experienced through its plentiful ghost tours. Because of its connection to the spirits, Savannah is a stellar place to go for epic trick-or-treating for kids and parties for adults. See all of the city's event listings here to stay up-to-date on yearly happenings.

Prague, Czech Republic

Halloween is quickly becoming a more popular holiday in Prague thanks to the growing expat community. Though you'll only find a very sparse trick-or-treating scene, it's a place filled with gothic architecture that feels both utterly romantic and absolutely spooky all at once. The city is even home to a torture museum , which is absolutely more terrfying to visit than any fake haunted house in your home town.

Brussels, Belgium

Brussels may not have a long history with Halloween, but it sure has dedicated itself to becoming a Halloween hotspot in recent years. The city hosts parades in Saint-Gilles , and several bars and restaurants host their own gatherings. None, however, are as spooky as Le Cercueil , which translates to "coffins" in French. The bar is spooky all year long and those visiting can toast over a table made from a coffin, one of which comes with clear plexiglass so you can see the skeleton inside.

Halloween Capital of the World in Anoka, Minnesota

With the festival also including flicks in dark fantasy, sci-fi, suspense, dark comedy, and thriller, it definitely covers the scope of what horror films can be. Averaging over 20 feature films and more than 60 short films, guests of the festival can expect special programs, events, and industry guests. One such example? A Nightmare Before Christmas director, Henry Selick, spoke at 2015's festival and confirmed that the Tim Burton-produced classic is, in fact, a Halloween movie, not a Christmas movie.

A Colonial Halloween in Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown, Virginia

One of the best ways to enjoy Halloween is to head back in time. Just as you'll find plenty of horror in the Victorian era (Dracula or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for example), the colonial era has its share, too—it's when the Salem Witch Trials took place, after all. For those willing to venture into a spirit world of old , the Virginia communities of Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown should be on your list. Part of America's Historic Triangle , the three communities have Halloween events that addresses everyone in the family. Elementary-school-age children explore haunted settings and go trick-or-treating at Family Frights in Jamestown, celebrate fall and hear stories of ghostly encounters in Yorktown , or sit in on a Halloween-themed museum talk at the Haunting on D.O.G. Street in Williamsburg. Want more scares? Head over to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg for the annual Howl-O-Scream , for elevated haunted houses, scare zones, and live entertainment. Parents should note the theme park is kid-friendly until 5 p.m.

Halloween at the Theme Park in Orlando, Florida

Orlando has been a top destination for families for years; it shouldn't be any different on Halloween. The city offers two events worth noting, one at Walt Disney World Resort and the other at Universal Orlando. Universal's Halloween Horror Nights runs early September through early November and with its haunted houses, scare zones, attractions, and live entertainment, there's certainly no shortage of scare opportunities. But if you're going to Orlando with kids, the full-force terror at Universal may not be the most family-friendly. Instead, head over to Walt Disney World Resort for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party ! Running from mid-August to early November, kids can enjoy the holiday without being overwhelmed by the more terrifying parts of Halloween. Fun for kids includes trick-or-treating, Disney character meet-and-greets, stage performances, and fireworks.

Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, N.Y.

While it may be too much for the faint of heart, many historic cemeteries around the country offer year-round tours and events celebrating their long histories, the notable names that reside there, and the astounding architecture that gives each cemetery its uniqueness. An annual fall event at Green-Wood Cemetery , discover ethereal sights and sounds while walking winding paths lit by candles and moonlight at "Nightfall" where you'll find films projected onto mausoleums, Victorian-era circus acts, musicians, and storytellers. While the event is two nights only, you can also go on one of the multiple tours being held on Halloween night.

The resting place of greats such as artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, versatile musician Leonard Bernstein, and FAO Schwarz founder Frederick August Otto Schwarz, the long list of famous names and nature of Green-Wood including bird watching opportunities, and over 500 species, varieties or cultivars of trees and woody plants, there's plenty of reasons to visit the cemetery at any point in the year.

Famous Haunts in South Dakota

If you haven't thought of South Dakota as a destination for Halloween fun, there are a number of events that'll make sure you keep the Midwestern state on your radar.

For amateur ghost hunters, scout these four events that allege bring you closer to the paranormal. BannerImg

These days, when we celebrate Halloween, what often comes to mind are kooky costumes, scary decorations, and lots of sweets. However, there’s so much more history to this holiday than many realize. Back then, people would adorn costumes and light bonfires to ward off ghosts. Today, it is an occasion to dress up, go trick-or-treating, and take part in many other festivities! How about experiencing Halloween in an entirely different way this year. With so many destinations across the world brimming with Halloween spirit, why not travel to a new destination that has its own traditions and ways to celebrate Halloween. And since it’s a popular holiday across the globe, there’s surely no shortage of Halloween destinations to travel to. Come let’s discover some spooky and fun places to celebrate Halloween this year.

Table of Contents

A Brief History Of Why We Celebrate Halloween

The very name “Halloween” comes from the old European celebration of All Hallows’ Eve, the eve of the Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day (also known as All Saint’s Day). During this festival, people celebrated the hallows (meaning saints, not magical objects!). People would even dress up as saints and go door to door reciting songs, and asking for “soul cakes” – the origin of today’s Trick-or-Treating.

All Souls Day Belgium

Many other Halloween customs we follow today are also influenced by the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain . Celebrated at the end of October to mark the changing of the seasons and the shortening of days, it involved connecting with the dead. People believed that the boundary between this world and the next was especially thin. Over time this evolved into a more light-hearted celebration, which traveled across the Atlantic with Irish and Scottish immigrants. By the 20th century, it had turned into the costume-wearing, pumpkin-carving, candy-eating holiday we all know and love.

Top 13 Places To Celebrate Halloween

While it has a long and complicated history, many places celebrate Halloween in a vibrant and exciting fashion. Here are some of the best places for Halloween from around the world that won’t disappoint.

1. Derry, Ireland

Celebrate halloween in Dublin

Halloween can trace back its origins to Celtic celebrations, such as Samhain. So, it’s no surprise that the Irish celebrate Halloween in great style. Traditions often include fortune-telling, bonfires, eating fruitcakes, and, of course, dressing up. Ireland’s Derry City hosts the biggest Halloween festival in Europe, the Banks of Foyle Halloween Carnival. Here you can enjoy haunted houses, ghost tours, parades, horror-storytelling and much more. You can also check out the more relaxed Spirits of Meath festival in Meath, which features pumpkin carving contests. With Derry reportedly having the best celebrations in the world, this could be a good starting point for your Halloween celebrations.

2. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh Halloween

Much like Ireland, Scotland has Celtic roots and also has many traditions related to Samhain. Even after the advent of Christianity, many of these customs remained. These include “guising,” where children go from door to door carrying lanterns made out of turnips in costumes for sweets or coins, as well as apple dunking, where you must retrieve an apple from a bucket of water using only your mouth. Halloween is such an integral part of Scottish culture that it has become the subject of many poems, most famously ‘Halloween’ by Robert Burns. According to him, Halloween is “thought to be a night when witches, devils, and other mischief-making beings are all abroad on their baneful midnight errands”. If you plan to visit Scotland this Halloween, make sure to check out Edinburgh’s Royal Mile with its creepy vaults, underground passages, and unsolved mysteries.

Where does Halloween come from?

Halloween originates from the ancient Celtic celebration, Samhain, and was celebrated in Britain and Ireland. The festival celebrates the end of the harvest and the coming of shorter days. It is one of four Gaelic season festivals. The Celts would gather around ancient passage tombs, which were considered by some to be portals to the Otherworld. During this time, it was thought that the barrier between worlds was thinned, and spirits were able to cross between realms.

The festivals included bonfires, dancing, costumes, sacrifices, and feasting. Most of our Halloween customs have evolved out of these ritual festivities. Costume parties and trick-or-treating antics were primary a British and American thing for a long time, but now the festivities have spread to countries all around the world.

In Central America, Halloween is a huge part of the culture but not in the way we celebrate in Canada and the United States . Mexico celebrates the end of October similar to Ireland and Scotland with the Day of the Dead – Da de los Muertos. Family and friends come together to remember loved ones that have died.

Although a somber occasion, it is a day of celebration where it is believed those who have passed are celebrating with them. The Day of the Dead is celebrated throughout Mexico, but, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and the Yucatan , in particular, observe it with more color and flare than the more subdued rural areas. It is in connection with the Catholic holiday All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2). Read more: 15 Fun Facts About Mexico

7. Catacombs of Paris – France

The Catacombs in Paris for a Halloween scare

Nothing spells death like the sight of bones piled atop on another. The Catacombs of Paris holds 6 million bones from the 1700’s it certainly has an eerie feel. Graveyards were overrun in the 18th century Paris and bodies had to be moved to old quarries to protect the city’s inhabitants from the plague. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you can look past the bones, you’ll be amazed at the artistry. Read more: Where to Stay in Paris, a Guide to Best Neighborhoods

8. Paris Cemeteries

After the Catacombs make your way to one of the famous cemeteries in Paris. Nearby you’ll find The Montparnasse Cemetery that houses the graves of such renowned writers and thinkers as  Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, Charles Baudelaire, and Julio Cortázar. The best cemetery and most famous cemetery in Paris for soul seekers is Cimetiere Pere La Chaise . It houses the remains of Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Chopin, Moliere, and Edith Piaf. Its giant mausoleums, decrepit graves, and ornate statues make for an extraordinary if not creepy experience.

9. Tower of London – England

Places to visit for halloween Tower of London

Beheadings, executions, prisoners, and royal intrigue. If it’s a bloody past that makes a scary Hallowe’en haunt, the Tower of London fits the bill. Queen Elizabeth was imprisoned here but had a better fate than the martyr Anne Askew who was burned at the stake. Poet Sir Walter Raleigh was beheaded here but nothing sounds worse than Sir Everard Digby who was hung, drawn, and quartered. Ew, that is one terrible way to go!

The Dungeon is a great interactive tour to join and be terrified, and make sure to take a haunted London walk where you’ll be spooked by the many executions that took place in this bloody city. London has many events and attractions to celebrate Halloween from the London Dungeon to The London Tombs and the London Bridget experience that was named the Top Horror Attraction in the World by The Worldwide Attractions Awards. 10. Chateau d’If – Marsaille

Halloween places to visit Chateau Dif France

There was little hope for prisoners of Chateau D’If once they were sent into exile off the coast of southern France. All they could do was look longingly; that is if they were lucky enough to have a view at the beautiful port city of Marseille . Torture and suffering went on year after year. Made famous by Alexander Dumas in the Count of Monte Cristo, when you visit Chateau d’If, you will be treated to showings of the Count of Monte Cristo. After you’ve toured the gruesome memories of Chateau D’If, head out in Marseille. Read more: Things to do in Marseille, France

11. Niagara Falls – Canada

nightmares niagara falls for Halloween

Clifton Hill, the famous street in Niagara Falls, Canada filled with wax museums, haunted houses, and restaurants filled with kitsch but is oh so much fun. It is here that you will find Nightmares. It is a must for anyone that loves a good scare. It is scary alright, legend has it that it was built on the site of an old coffin factory.

The proprietor was killed in a prank gone bad and has haunted the halls ever since. If you become too scared inside the maze of nightmares you can chicken out. Don’t feel bad if you do,  over 167,442 people have chickened out over the years. Check out Where to Stay in Niagara Falls

12. Salem Massachusetts- USA

Salem MA for Halloween in the USA

Re-live the terrifying experience of the Salem Witch Trials. Oh, what those poor women must have gone through. One of the first witches accused and sentenced to death was by the owner of this house, Benjamin Abbot. Martha Carrier was accused by a mob of women and this awful man leading to her death by hanging in Salem. From September to Halloween, Haunted Happenings runs recounting the events with theatre and tours.

Ways to celebrate Halloween in Salem are to visit the Salem Witch Trials Memorial, go to the Salem Psychic Fair and Witches Market, and go to the Salem Witch Museum. The Hawthorne Hotel also hosts the annual Witches Ball. OOh.

13. Cuchi Tunnels – Vietnam

cu chi tunnels vietnam

I don’t know how the Vietcong survived in this 200 km tunnel system for so many years. It is scary without a war going on, imagine how people felt during the Vietnam War. The original entrance is tiny and the crawling is tinier if this doesn’t scream horror movie , nothing will! If the thought of close spaces gives you a fright, consider the Cuchi Tunnels in Vietnam it gave me a fright as we crawled through the original caves to the point where I started panicking. At one time I thought we were lost and I’d be stuck waiting in the dark to be rescued for days. Read more: Places to Visit in Southern Vietnam

Worth reading this article. It really educative. I never knew Dracula’s castle was real with the story behind. All thanks to you guys for sharing this information .

I completely agree with New Orleans! There are some really fun ghost tours you can organize here as well.

Wow thanks for sharing with us ….such a wonderful Places thanks Onceagain………..

Transylvania is definitely a great place to horror around halloween, but in my opinion the Brad castle is a touristic trap …. there are much better places in Transylvania, away from commerce and merchandise.

Thanks for sharing a great post!

I like your Halloween history.

From this list i prefer Transylvania because when i think of Halloween first thing that comes to my mind is Dracula so visiting Dracula’s castle will be a best option and this is one of the places in my wish list.

Really a great list. I would like to visit Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls and to experience the nightmares. Thanks for sharing.

Love the list, and great idea! I love Nightmares Fear Factory–so scary ?

Hey, I love the list of haunted places, i would like to visit Hostel of Ottawa with my friends, if anyone visit please share their experience. Thank you

Great list! I’m sharing on my Facebook page and I pinned on Pinterest!

Great list! I love visiting spooky places. Now I’ve got some more inspiration 🙂

G’s been dying to go to Fright Night at the Winchester Mystery House (since we’re from San Jose, CA) but I chickened out. Creepy and scary is not really my thing. I’d rather stay home and watch Hocus Focus.. that’s about as Halloweeny as it get’s for me. Lol. Although I will say I’d love to visit all of the above during the day time and preferably not on all hallows eve. =)

Loved the Catacombs, but they were definitely a bit spooky. Was waiting for someone to jump out at us the whole time.

Hung, Drawn and Quartered … not the nicest way to go!

It basically involved being stretched by a rope that was tied to a horse, then hung until almost to the point of death, quartered which involved castration, disembowelment, beheaded and then cut into 4 pieces to be spread around the country for everyone to see. Hopefully by this time you would be dead 🙂

They image of the castle in Romania gives me the goosebumps! I have such a low tolerance for spooky stuff that all of this stuff sounds scary to me!

I take it Halloween isn’t your favourite holiday then eh? I love a good scare but horror movies don’t do it for me. Well, I should say, the killing and gruesome movies like Saw and Hostel don’t do it for me. But I do love a good ghost story.

Love the list, and great idea! I love Nightmares Fear Factory–so scary 😀

Thanks, have you been to Nightmares? We’ve made it through without chickening out luckily!

Nice touch and perfect timing of an article:) That one in Ottawa looks the creepiest, in my opinion!! Enjoy Halloween, I know it’s celebrated more over there than it is over here. Shame – I LOVE fancy dress!!

Thanks Anthony. Yes, the Ottawa hostel is creepy especially when you think of all the suffering souls that died there.

New York City’s famed Village Halloween Parade bursts with creativity and fun © Johannes Eisele / AFP via Getty Images)

While a large portion of the world considers Halloween to be largely for children, Americans of all ages take the holiday very seriously.

Starting as early as September, cities begin hosting their favorite eerie events designed to celebrate all things spooky – and most everyone takes part.

Across the USA this haunted season, you can discover Halloween events that are equal parts charming and creepy. Here are some of our favorite places to celebrate all things ghostly, macabre and just plain fabulous.

The Annual Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor, Croton-on-Hudson, New York

Sleepy Hollow, New York

Penned by Washington Irving in 1820, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” has permeated popular Halloween culture for literally centuries. Lucky for us, the town at the center of the story is very real and comes alive for a month-long Halloween celebration.

Take a tour of the historic cemetery by lantern light to learn about Irving and other notable citizens, or head over to the historic Philipsburg Manor, which is converted into a terrifying haunt known as Horseman’s Hollow .

If pumpkins are your thing, don’t miss the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze , which features over 7000 carved gourds, the Museum of Pumpkin Art and even a pumpkin windmill.

Revelers during the Haunted Happenings Grand Parade, Salem, Massachusetts, USA

Salem, Massachusetts

As the epicenter of the grim witch trials of the late 1600s, Salem , Massachusetts , sits at the heart of the country’s most visceral Halloween lore. Its heritage played a starring role in the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus , and its fame has led people from all over to make the pilgrimage to this haunted spot year-round.

Visiting Salem during October, however, delivers a special type of energy, as the town embraces the year’s biggest opportunity to delve into its history. Take a candle-lit haunted tour of the city; visit the Witch Trials Memorial and the Salem Witch Museum ; dive into the world of the unknown at the Psychic Fair and Witchcraft Expo ; and top it all off by attending the annual Witches Ball , a masquerade held at the historic Hawthorne Hotel .

A large float with a huge Dracula figure at the front is illuminated by a strong of light bulbs. People dressed in elaborate costumes throw items off the float to people on the street.

New Orleans, Louisiana

It’s no secret that New Orleans can throw a party like nowhere else – a talent that’s not limited to Mardi Gras in February. Many regard the city as one of the most haunted in the country: ghost tours abound throughout the year, making Halloween a particularly important time here. Hit the French Quarter during October for a supernatural celebration called  Krewe of Boo! , which brings Mardi Gras–esque flair to the spooky season.

The parade features what New Orleans does best – with a ghoulish twist: think hand-crafted floats, costumed bands, dancers and even beads (locally sourced and make an effort to be environmentally friendly). The Krewe also hosts an annual Zombie Run , where zombies take to the streets like a scene out of World War Z .

Revellers march in costumes during the 49th Annual Halloween parade in Greenwich Village, New York, New York, USA

New York, New York

Head to any US city with an art-house movie theater in October and you’ll find a live-action showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show , complete with costumes, props, callbacks from the audience and a three-dimensional cast shadowing the on-screen antics.

This tradition began in  New York City at the now-defunct Waverly Theater – and continues today through the work of the  NYC Rocky Horror  troupe. Check their website to see where they’ll be doing the “Time Warp” next.

While you’re in town, don’t miss the famous Village Halloween Parade , famed for its creativity and sheer size. Watch (or join in!) as giant puppets make their way through the neighborhood, and costumed revelers jam to dozens of ambulatory bands playing music of all genres.

A green witch float in the Sea Witch Festival parade, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, USA

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Not all witches dwell on land, it turns out. If your vibe skews nautical, don your seaweed and celebrate Halloween with your seafaring brethren at the Sea Witch Festival in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware . Festivities include Halloween staples like a parade and costume contest, but also ocean-inflected events like a haunted bonfire, coastal wildlife seminars, a trick-or-treat for kids on the beach, and a scavenger hunt for the sea witch herself.

Best Places to Go for Halloween

This post is all about the best places to go for Halloween around the world.

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, and it’s been on my bucket list to celebrate Halloween in various spooky destinations in the US and abroad.

There is just something about the vibrant fall leaves and crisp, cool evenings of October that always gets me excited for Halloween. I personally like to celebrate all month long!

There are Halloween parades, costume contests, and other events. You can also take a tour of Salem’s harrowing history (as the home of the Salem Witch Trials) or peruse the many witchcraft and occult stores on Essex Street to get into the Halloween spirit.

It’s celebrated by families with food and offerings to the dead. You’ll see plenty of colorful decorations and skulls during this holiday, which has become more popular with tourists around the world over the years.

Halloween celebrations in big cities can absolutely be a blast—there's no denying that. But, in our humble opinion, the best Halloween towns in America are small towns. With historic homes, ghost stories, and tall tales passed down from generation to generation, no one sets the mood quite like 'em. There's also something incredibly special—and dare we say a little spooky—about spending the night of October 31st far away from the bright lights and crowded streets of more populous locales, and that's precisely why we've rounded up the best small towns to celebrate in right here.

And parents, you'll want to pay special attention: Our list includes dozens of family-friendly Halloween activities. In fact, if you've got your little ones dressed up in their Halloween costumes for kids and don't want to risk scaring them in the slightest, nearly all of these places are safe bets. Halloween bake-offs, tractor shows, and other fall-inspired games and shows are just a few of the less scary options that await you. So go forth and find your perfect small town destination for this Halloween!

New Hope, Pennsylvania

La Canada Flintride, California

The 10 Best Places to Spend Halloween in the U.S.

Halloween Parade Anoka Minnesota

The annual Halloween parade in Anoka, Minnesota. Photo: Akerri / Shutterstock.com

When autumn comes along, many travelers will be itching to get in the Halloween spirit. Some may even want to book a trip for Oct. 31 to the scariest, most festive place around. Fortunately, there is no shortage of towns and cities in the United States that take Halloween very seriously.

From spectacular Jack-o-Lantern shows to chilling ghost tours to family-friendly costume parades, there are plenty of reasons to travel for this haunted holiday. Here are the top 10 places in the country to visit for Halloween.

1. Anoka, Minnesota Dubbed the Halloween capital of the world, Anoka is a must-see during this time of year. This Minnesota city is known for holding the country’s very-first Halloween parade in 1920, a tradition that locals continue to this day – and have grown upon greatly in the past century-plus. Anoka even has its own Halloween shop that is open on select days throughout the year.

About a week before Halloween, the city hosts a Light Up the Night parade. Then, on Halloween weekend, locals and visitors alike dress in costumes and walk in the famous Grande Day Parade. Other events in October include costumed Bingo nights, the coronation of the new Anoka Halloween Ambassador, and a house decorating contest.

2. St. Helens, Oregon This small town in Oregon got its claim to fame when Disney Channel filmed its 1998 original movie Halloweentown there. Now, locals carry on the exciting festivities with its Spirit of Halloweentown series of events starting each September.

Fun attractions leading up to Halloween include train ride tours of Halloween decorations, boat rides across the river to view impressive pumpkin carvings, a haunted house, The Great Big Halloween Exhibit, and a Halloween parade. The Museum of Peculiarities and Oddities is also well worth a visit.

3. Sleepy Hollow, New York More than two centuries after it was written, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” fuels a flurry of fall activities in its namesake village . The quaint, riverside town celebrates author Washington Irving’s headless horseman tale year-round – but especially around Halloween.

Visitors can tour the historic, 90-acre Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and visit Irving’s grave. They can also see Irving’s estate, learn about his life and legacy, and witness live re-enactments of his spooky story. Other attractions in Sleepy Hollow and nearby Tarrytown include The Great Jack-o-Lantern Blaze, which features artistically carved pumpkins lighting up the night sky, ghost tours, a Halloween parade, haunted hayrides, streets fairs, and a farmer’s market.

4. Salem, Massachusetts America’s Witch City, the site of the infamous Salem witch trials in 1692, is a prime spot to spend Halloween. Costumed crowds fill the streets in celebration of the spookiest night of the year, and there are plenty of festive things to do in this hip, artsy town.

For those seeking a thrill, there are several haunted houses and ghost tours to choose from. For the fainter of heart, a historic house tour or visit to one of the many gift shops could be more their speed. There is also the Salem Witch Museum and a graveyard paying tribute to witch trial victims.

5. Orlando, Florida Halloween fun awaits at Orlando’s theme parks. For those looking for a fright, Universal Orlando Resort holds its annual Halloween Horror Nights. Special event ticketholders can choose from 10 different haunted houses, including Stranger Things- and The Last of Us-themed attractions.

Disney World has more family-friendly Halloween amusement, from a Halloween parade and Hocus Pocus “villain spectacular” to trick-or-treating throughout the park and Halloween-themed fireworks.

6. New Orleans, Louisiana Like its Mardi Gras celebration, Halloween attracts many tourists to New Orleans for its haunted history and lively party scene. The streets open to locals and visitors dressed in crazy costumes, and the many costume and voodoo shops in the area hold their own events as well. Travelers can also go on tours of historic houses and cemeteries throughout New Orleans and learn why it’s often called “the most haunted city in America.”

7. Dallas, Texas For real thrill-seekers, Dallas offers some of the most intense haunted houses in the country. Two of the most popular – and perhaps most scary – are Boneyard and Slaughter House. But aside from the haunts, Dallas has many other activities for visitors young and old alike.

The Dallas Zoo hosts evening carnival-like events for families that include trick-or-treating and other Halloween-themed fun. There are also festive, kid-friendly events held at the Dallas Arboretum. When Halloween arrives, everyone is dressed in costume, and many bars and restaurants hold costume contests.

8. Los Angeles, California There will be plenty of excitement on Halloween – and all throughout October – in Los Angeles. Scary movie screenings are a staple of a Hollywood Halloween, and that’s just one option for seasonal things to do in the area. There are also the popular Mr. Jack-o-Lantern's Pumpkin Patch, which has multiple locations in the city, tours at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery and other local historic cemeteries, and the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Scarium of the Pacific event.

9. Independence, Kansas The entire week leading up to Halloween weekend in this Kansas town is Neewollah (Halloween spelled backwards), which is chock full of family-friendly festivities. Highlights include a carnival in downtown Independence, several street parades, an arts and crafts show, and a marching band competition.

10. Las Vegas, Nevada It’s no surprise that Las Vegas goes all out for Halloween. Hotels on the strip will be decked out in spooky décor, and there are plenty of on-theme shows and events to attend. This year’s attractions will include a Blackout Dining in the Dark experience and an official Saw and Blair Witch escape room. There will also be Zombie burlesque show, and it’s certain that there will be plenty of costume contests to partake in.

Aside from being declared the poorest small city of America in 2011, Reading is also famous for hosting one of the most amazing Halloween festivals in the country- the iconic Shocktoberfest. Initially, it started as a single hayride, grew into a large “horror park” that attracts scare-seeking visitors from different parts of the world. Judging by the ratings, this is one of the top-rated horror attractions in the United States. Some of the festival’s main attractions feature a zombie safari tour, a massacre scare zone, laser tag with zombies, and much more!

Isla de la Munecas, Mexico

Isla de la Munecas

All of the cities we covered in this post so far have a Halloween spirit but el Isla de la Munecas gives the word ‘scary a new meaning’. This Mexican island is one of the  most haunted islands in the world  and its history is rather curious. Back in the 1950s, the only resident of this island was a man named Julian Santana Barrera. One day, he found the body of a little girl at the shore. Supposedly, the girl’s ghost kept haunting Julian, and to please her, he started hanging dolls from every single tree he could find on the island.

There are stories of people who visited the islands claiming that the dolls move and whisper in the night. To make everything even scarier, years after discovering the girl’s body, Julian drowned himself on the same spot where he found the body.

I’d say the entire island, are you brave enough to visit it?

Oaxaca, Mexico

oaxaca dia de los muertos

If you want to experience something new this Halloween, why not head to Mexico and celebrate Dia de los Muertos? Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday in which people welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion. This holiday shares the same roots with Halloween but it’s an entirely different holiday with celebrations across Mexico that last for 3 days.

The best place in Mexico to experience Dia de los Muertos is probably Oaxaca, a city known for having the biggest Dia de los Muertos celebration in the world. For this day, the entire city turns into a massive fiesta. However, keep in mind that this is a religious (and important) traditional holiday and should not be treated as a tourist attraction.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin Halloween

Dublin is one of the best places to celebrate Halloween in Europe. After all, let’s not forget that Halloween originated in Ireland. The predecessor of Halloween was an ancient Celtic holiday known as Samhain. Throughout the years, the holiday evolved into Halloween that we know and love today but going back to the roots of a holiday is always a nice experience.

Every year, across Ireland, you’ll find an exciting atmosphere for Halloween, and Dublin hosts one of the liveliest celebrations of this holiday. There are many parties and festivals devoted to Halloween and Irish people sure know how to celebrate (as you already may know).

Halloween in Ireland

Meath, Ireland

meath ireland halloween

Another great Halloween destination in Ireland is the town of Meath, the place where (according to historic sources) Halloween (or Samhain) originally began. The town itself isn’t very spooky and doesn’t have many places you might call haunted but the atmosphere in Meath during Halloween is a reason enough to visit. Meath is also one of the rare cities in Ireland that combines the Halloween celebration with traditional elements of the ancient festival of Samhain. This is arguably the largest Halloween festival in Ireland with an equal balance of scary night events and good old-fashioned festival fun.

Derry, Northern Ireland

derry halloween

Even though technically another country, Northern Ireland is connected to the ancient festival of Samhain as much as Ireland. The most prominent example of this is the city of Derry. Derry is one of the rare cities outside of the US to be dotted as “the best Halloween destination in the world” by USA Today (2015). The locals of Derry are crazy about Halloween and the festivities and celebrations are even crazier. Every year, the festival in Derry is even bigger than the previous year with more international visitors as time passes by. So, if you’re looking for a place to celebrate Halloween outside of the US, Derry is one of the best Halloween destinations in the world.

In general, Halloween isn’t a big deal in France but Limoges is an exception. The city embraced the Halloween spectacle in the 1990s, organizing its first Halloween celebration in 1996 and the rest is history. Today, this is the biggest celebration of Halloween in France with a plethora of festivities, events, fairs, streets shows, costume and storytelling competitions, and more than 50,000 visitors.

Transylvania, Romania

transylvania best halloween destinations in the world

What kind of list of the best Halloween destinations in the world would this be if we didn’t include Transylvania? Aside from being one of the most scenic regions of Romania , Transylvania is famous for its dark history and the famous legend of Count Dracula that originates from here. In Transylvania, you can find many ancient scary-looking castles , villages that seem to be frozen in time, many fascinating stories, and much more.

Halloween as a holiday isn’t a very big deal in Romania but what better way to celebrate it than through a one-of-a-kind, creepy experience in the “vampire stronghold” of Europe. If you want to spend your Halloween at some of the scariest locations in the world, consider visiting Bran Castle, Rasnov Fortress, Teleki Mansion, and the notorious Hoia Baciu Forest (a supposedly haunted forest where several UFO sightings were spotted according to witnesses).

Oravsky Hrad, Slovakia

orava castle

If you’re looking for a less touristy version of Prague or Transylvania for your next Halloween adventure, you may want to consider Slovakia’s Oravsky Hrad. Oravsky Hrad or Orava Castle is a spooky-looking castle built on top of a high rock next to the bank of the Orava River. This castle was used for the shooting of 1922 horror classic Nosferatu, one of the scariest movies of its time and a pioneer in the horror movie niche.

City of the Dead, Russia

Dargavs city of the dead

At a glance, the Ossetian commune of Dargavs looks like a charming village but once you get there, you’ll see that there’s something wrong. Each one of the beautiful houses is actually a tomb for entire Ossetian families. If you take a walk around the village and peek inside the houses, you will easily spot piles of skeletons.

According to local historians, these “tombs” date to a couple of hundred years ago when the village was affected by the plague. Many people died and in desperation some people just stayed in the family crypt waiting for their own death, knowing no one will be around to bury them.

This is where the nickname- City of the Dead comes from. Today, Dargavs is cut off from  the rest of Russia  located on a three-hour drive from the nearest living settlement. Obviously, Halloween is not celebrated there and tourist infrastructure is poor, but if you want to visit a scary place for Halloween, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Did you ever visit any of these places? How did you like this list of the best Halloween destinations in the world? Do you think there are a few other places we should add to our list? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!

1. experience the haunted happenings in salem, massachusetts.

Today, you can learn about the real story of the Witch Trials and the legacy of real witches in Salem in places like the Salem Witch Museum .

Throughout the year, Salem embraces its status as “Witch City,” but the real party starts come October. Throughout October, Salem throws a month-long Halloween festival known as the Haunted Happenings , all culminating in the largest Halloween celebration in the world.

2. Journey to Halloweentown in St. Helens, Oregon

Towns to Visit for Halloween Season: St. Helens, Oregon

Looking for the best Halloween towns in the US? How about the actual Halloweentown? If you’ve always wanted to pretend to be a Cromwell, you’ll light up with joy when you see that iconic jack-o’-lantern in front of City Hall, just like you remember from the beloved Disney classic “Halloweentown.”

St. Helens is so proud of being the home of Halloweentown that it throws an annual festival called the Spirit of Halloweentown , running from mid-September all the way to Halloween. But if you want to see the giant pumpkin illuminated, you’ll have to arrive on October 1, when the jack-o’-lantern is lit right after the Big Halloween Parade.

The celebration mainly takes place over the weekends throughout September and October, with special events happening every Saturday and Sunday. Check out haunted attractions, meet creepy and magical characters, and take specialty tours with a Halloween theme.

But “Halloweentown” isn’t the only movie that has filming locations in town. “Twilight” shot several scenes in St. Helens. Throughout the Spirit of Halloweentown events, you’ll be able to meet actors from both franchises. Be sure to secure your tickets early to be able to get a photo with these casts of characters.

3. Go to Orlando, Florida, for Frightful Fun

Best Halloween Towns to Visit: Universal Orlando

As the Theme Park Capital of the World, Orlando is one of the best places to spend Halloween in the US because there’s something for everyone. Two of Orlando’s biggest parties couldn’t be more opposite.

Step inside Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights and enter a world of nightmares around every corner. This Halloween festival is not for the faint of heart, and please leave young kids with a babysitter because no one is safe here.

Even if you decide not to enter one of the 10 exquisitely decorated haunted houses featuring franchises like “Chucky,” “The Last of Us,” and “Stranger Things,” you’ll still be subjected to multiple scare zones, where creatures will come out of the mist to scare you out of your wits.

Be on the lookout for the roaming hordes of characters, including the Death Eaters from “Harry Potter” and the terrifying M3GAN robots from 2023’s breakout horror hit of the same name (who have some pretty impressive dance moves). You never know where they’ll pop up.

Traveling with little ones or just not so into getting scared repeatedly throughout the night? Check out Walt Disney World’s aptly named Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party . Running from mid-August to November 1, this party’s most frightening feature is the Headless Horseman, who always starts the Boo-to-You Parade, taking place twice per night. But you can always close your eyes when he arrives.

The rest of the evening in Magic Kingdom will be spent going on Halloween-themed rides, watching fireworks with projections on Cinderella Castle, seeing a musical extravaganza starring the Sanderson Sisters from “Hocus Pocus,” and dining on ghoulishly good specialty treats. And everyone is invited to go trick-or-treating throughout the park.

4. Look Out for the Headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow, New York

Best Cities for Halloween in the US: Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow is appropriately named as it’s a sleepy little village in New York’s Hudson Valley. It’s particularly beautiful in the fall when the leaves change color and make it look like something out of a painting – or perhaps out of a story.

This scenic spot is one of the best Halloween towns, as it’s the setting for “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. And many events in and around Sleepy Hollow embrace their spooky status.

Best Towns for Halloween in the US: Sleepy Hollow

Over in Croton-on-Hudson, you can see over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins against the backdrop of Van Cortlandt’s 18th-century estate at the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze . Or explore Rockefeller State Park Preserve with Hulda’s Night , where you’ll listen to local legends in the real woods of Sleepy Hollow, including the story of Hulda herself, the famous witch of the village.

You can also go on several tours of haunted establishments in and around Sleepy Hollow, like the Tarrytown Music Hall , the Lyndhurst Mansion , or Sleepy Hollow’s cemeteries . Or experience the story of Sleepy Hollow in a new way with the Legend Cirque .

5. Take a Ghost Tour in New Orleans, Louisiana

Spooky Halloween Towns to Visit: Ghost Tour in New Orleans

If you’re wondering where to celebrate Halloween in the US, New Orleans is the perfect pick if you’re looking for a truly spooky experience. Long considered one of the most haunted places in the US, New Orleans is filled with ghostly attractions all year round, but there’s no better time for frightening fun than Halloween.

After Mardi Gras, Halloween is one of the busiest seasons for this unique city. Take a haunted tour through the French Quarter or check out the many voodoo shops’ Halloween events.

Or spend the spooky season celebrating at massive parties, like Halloween New Orleans , a weekend-long party that benefits Project Lazarus, a home for people living with AIDS in New Orleans. Or check out the Krewe of BOO! , New Orleans’ official Halloween parade.

If you don’t have your own ghost encounter in New Orleans, you can always guarantee a terrifying time at one of the city’s haunted houses, like The Mortuary , frequently voted as one of the most frightening haunted houses in the US.

6. Celebrate Neewollah in Independence, Kansas

Independence takes Halloween very seriously. After all, their Halloween celebration, Neewollah , is Kansas’s biggest annual festival. Neewollah, Halloween spelled backward, began back in 1919 and was inspired by a desire to take the trick out of trick-or-treating. The festival was designed to give kids something more positive to do than run amuck on Halloween.

Taking place the last week of October, Neewollah is the perfect place for some family fun this Halloween. So, what is there to do? Quite a bit, though you won’t find a ghost or ghoul in the place unless they’re of the friendly variety.

Instead, you’ll find family-friendly musicals, fun runs, the Queen Neelah Pageant, a carnival, local food vendors, parades, craft shows, live music, a marching band competition, and the annual Medallion Hunt, where the whole town comes out to search for the famous Medallion. Neewollah is much more of a state fair than many other Halloween festivals, but this fair takes on a fall theming, with some Halloween magic mixed in.

7. Take Part in Family-Friendly Frights in Anoka, Minnesota

For more fun for the whole family, Anoka is one of the best Halloween towns. In fact, since 1937, this charming destination has been called the Halloween Capital of the World. And this small town does indeed hold one massive Halloween celebration , lasting throughout the month of October.

If you want a fright, you can check out the Anoka Haunted House, which has been a staple of the festivities for 35 years. But many of the events here are perfect for those of us who would prefer a tamer Halloween experience.

Kids will love the Kids Fall Festival in early October, and later in the month, they can take part in the Children’s Costume Contest and Children’s Pumpkin Carving Contest. But there’s plenty more fun to be had for the whole family, including multiple parades, the Anoka Halloween Ambassador Coronation, the Pumpkin Weigh-Off, and the annual Pumpkin Bowl, which sees the Anoka Tornadoes take on the Centennial Cougars.

8. Party Hop the Night Away in Los Angeles, California

Best Towns for Halloween in the US: Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles is one of the best cities for Halloween if you want to party all night long. From nightclubs rocking out to Halloween hits to epic immersive experiences, there’s something for every type of partygoer.

The West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval is a party that you can’t miss. Though there are parties on Santa Monica Boulevard all year long, this Halloween event is truly wild in the best way! People come out decked in incredible costumes, so you may just end up spending the whole night people-watching.

Best Cities for Halloween in the US: Los Angeles, California

But you can also listen to live music and boogie down to DJs spinning the evening away. Or check out the bars along the street to indulge in some Halloween-themed drink specials.

Halloween isn’t the only holiday happening this time of year. Although Dίa del Los Muertos can sometimes get misconstrued as another version of Halloween, it is its own unique and very culturally significant celebration. Over at the famous Hollywood Forever Cemetery, you’ll find a huge event dedicated to Dίa del Los Muertos .

By day, you can take part in Dίa de Los Muertos, featuring a children’s plaza, stunning altars, art showcases, traditional dance performances, and unique cultural performances. But if you grab a ticket to Noche de los Muertos, you’ll see such incredible attractions and entertainment illuminated by candlelight and taking on a more adult-themed atmosphere.

9. Get Scared on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California

Best Halloween Towns to Visit: Queen Mary

Visiting the Queen Mary is not for those who frighten easily. Dating back to 1934, the Queen Mary was a luxury cruise liner that also ferried soldiers between the fronts in World War II. In 1967, it was retired and found a permanent home as a hotel in Long Beach.

It’s now known as one of the most haunted destinations in the US, with only the bravest being willing to stay in its famous Stateroom B340. If you want a ghostly encounter, you just might find it aboard this floating hotel.

Though Queen Mary’s beloved Dark Harbor, a truly incredible haunted house experience, has sadly not returned since the COVID-19 pandemic, you can still get scared at the Queen Mary during the Halloween season. The Queen Mary hosts its Haunted Encounters ghost tours, featuring many of the most infamously haunted locations in the hotel.

While we miss Dark Harbor, apparently Shaq (yes, that Shaq) heard the call of horror fans everywhere and brought a new horror festival to the Queen Mary, Shaqtoberfest . Not nearly as scary as its predecessor, Shaqtoberfest still offers tons of spooky fun, from haunted houses to pumpkin patches to a Halloween carnival.

10. Live Out Your ‘Twilight’ Dreams in Forks, Washington

Best Towns to Visit for Halloween: Forks, Washington

Team Edward? Or Team Jacob? No matter what side you choose, you’ll feel right at home in Forks, the town immortalized in Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” saga. So, if you prefer your vampires to be of the more sparkly variety, Forks is a great Halloween town to visit.

You can take your own “Twilight” tour, with stops at Bella Italia, where Edward and Bella had their first date; the Treaty Line, where no vampire or werewolf is allowed to cross into each other’s territory; and the Forks Community Hospital, where you’ll even see a spot reserved for Dr. Carlisle Cullen. And be sure to visit the Forever Twilight in Forks Collection at the Rainforest Arts Center, where you’ll see authentic “Twilight” props like screen-worn costumes.

Towns to Visit for Halloween Season: Forks, Washington

But if you want to get the full “Twilight” experience, you may want to actually go a bit earlier in the fall. Running every September near Bella’s birthday, September 13, the Forever Twilight in Forks Festival offers four days of fun, from panels with actors from the saga to costumed cosplayers acting out your favorite scenes to tons of themed parties and events.

11. Get Spooked in Savannah, Georgia

Best Towns for Halloween in the US: Savannah, Georgia

Think Salem is the most haunted town in the US? Or maybe New Orleans? You’re not wrong that there are tons of paranormal reports in these cities, but the title of the most haunted city in the US actually goes to Savannah. From the spooky yet gorgeous Bonaventure Cemetery to the Civil War-era Fort Pulaski, sightings of the unexplainable happen everywhere.

Though ghost tours are one of the coolest things to do in Savannah all year round, this spooky city really comes alive for the Halloween season. Deal with spirits of all kinds on the A Nightmare on Congress Street Bar Crawl , or get scared at the Savannah Moose Lodge’s Haunted Forest or the Alee Terror Plantation Haunted House .

Best Halloween Towns to Visit: Savannah, Georgia

But not everything is truly terrifying here. Savannah also hosts Wag-O-Ween , a pet-friendly event that raises money for local animal rescues and other critical animal-related causes. You’ll get treats for both you and your furry pal!

12. Take a Stephen King Tour in Bangor, Maine

Best Towns to Visit for Halloween: Bangor, Maine

What better way to celebrate Halloween in the US than by visiting one of the country’s best horror writers? Bangor has become a Halloween town thanks to being not only the home of Stephen King but also where he was greatly inspired to write some of his more famous stories. Bangor is the inspiration for Derry, the town in “It,” but there are many more places in the town that have jumped onto King’s pages.

Mount Hope Cemetery is the infamous burial ground in “Pet Sematary,” while the Paul Bunyan Statue features in both “It” and “Insomnia.” And from the water tower to the sewer drain, there are “It” locations all throughout the town. You can even see King’s own house on West Broadway.

You can tour Derry, we mean Bangor, on your own, or you can take a tour with SK Tours of Maine . This 2.5-hour tour is a narrated adventure through the town, where you’ll see not only what inspired King’s works but also historic landmarks from his own life, like where he worked and the charities he supported in town.

13. Attend the World’s Largest Halloween Parade in New York, New York

Best Halloween Towns to Visit: Village Halloween Parade

Like Los Angeles, there are Halloween parties galore in New York City . But there’s none more famous or massive than the Village Halloween Parade . This parade, which takes place in NYC’s Greenwich Village, holds the title of the world’s largest Halloween parade.

This iconic celebration was first held in 1973 and got its start thanks to Greenwich Village puppeteer and mask maker Ralph Lee. Puppets still have a special place in this parade. You can even volunteer to animate one for the festivities.

Best Cities for Halloween in the US: Village Halloween Parade

There are over 50,000 costumed participants, and you can be part of them. Happening on Halloween, this parade invites anyone to join in, provided you’re in costume or operating one of the parade’s puppets.

Join up with the crowd and dance the night away as you make your way north on Sixth Avenue. You just might win the annual costume contest, which takes place at the afterparty being held at Webster Hall.

14. Enjoy Scenic Hikes and Classic Horror in Telluride, Colorado

Over Labor Day weekend, Telluride is home to the Telluride Film Festival , where you can watch movie premieres and engage in talks with both famous and up-and-coming directors, writers, and actors. But come spooky season, another film festival takes over this scenic mountain town.

The Telluride Horror Show put Telluride on the map as one of the best Halloween cities in the US. As the first and largest horror film festival in Colorado, the Telluride Horror Show is the place to be for scary movie lovers.

Taking place over the course of three days in October, this festival offers something for every horror fan, from dark comedies to terrifying science fiction to classic horror. You’ll see movies you can’t see anywhere else, plus engage in talks with your favorite horror stars.

While Telluride’s ski season doesn’t typically start until late November, the film festival lines up perfectly with the best time to see the city’s fall foliage. Spend your evenings in the theaters and your mornings enjoying the beautiful golds, reds, and yellows to be found throughout the San Juan Mountains.

15. Pop into the New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival in Laconia, New Hampshire.

Spooky Halloween Towns to Visit: Pumpkin Festival

The picturesque town of Laconia may not be what you first think of when you imagine a Halloween city in the US. It’s not bursting with events or haunted houses, and if Laconia is haunted, it’s not really known for it. But if you’re looking for family-friendly fun, Laconia is a great place to spend Halloween.

The New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival , typically held over the course of one weekend in October, has a strange history. Since 1991, it has been held in Keene, where the town managed to hold on to the title of the largest number of jack-o’-lanterns in one place for many years. But in 2014, riots by Keene State College students resulted in the event being unable to continue in Keene. Since 2015, it’s been held in Laconia instead.

Though the organizers of Keene’s pumpkin festival now hold a much smaller festival called the Keene Pumpkin Festival , Laconia is where you’ll find a festival that’s much more similar to the original one in Keene. In addition to thousands of pumpkins on display, you’ll also discover handmade goods from more than 100 local artisans, kids’ attractions and entertainment, contests, parades, live music, light shows, and other special events.

13 Best Places To Visit For Halloween Around The World

From mexico to romania, here are 13 of the best places that the lovers for all things spooky should visit for halloween..

13 Best Places To Visit For Halloween Around The World

The spooky season is almost here, and there’s no better way to honour it than with a trip to a place primed and ready to celebrate ghosts and goblins. By Stacey Leasca

Now’s the time to lean into sweater season, the changing leaves, and all things pumpkin — both flavoured and decor related. And don’t worry — just because it’s Halloween doesn’t mean you always need to be in for a fright.

Here are 13 spooky and fun places to visit for Halloween around the globe

Salem, massachusetts.

Best places for Halloween

It’s almost impossible to separate Salem from Halloween. The coastal Massachusetts community was the site of the Salem Witch Trials, beginning in 1692, which led to the hanging of 19 men and women. It’s a place where the air is thick with spirits, but around Halloween, it’s a destination filled with merriment too. Each October, the town puts on Salem Haunted Happenings, which includes a parade, film nights, a costume ball, and more, and you’re all invited to join .

London, England

London

London has all the historical trappings needed for an epic Halloween season. It’s a place brimming with ghost stories, and the best spot to experience this to the fullest is the Tower of London . It was here that several notable figures were put to death, including Anne Boleyn, the former Queen of England and second wife of Henry VIII, who is said to still roam the halls. Visitors can tour the Tower of London any time of year, but it’s just got that extra spooky feeling in October. Visit for a Twilight Tour for an eerie vibe.

Boyne Valley, Ireland

Best places for Halloween

What better place to celebrate Halloween than in the place where it began? As History.com explains, the Halloween tradition began with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain . At the time of its origin, people would wear costumes to ward off ghosts, which means not much has changed (though we’re sure they didn’t have allegiances to different candy at the time). Now Ireland celebrates with festivals throughout the month of October, including the Púca Halloween Festival , which honours the Celtic new year with music, art, and plenty of sweet treats.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Best places for Halloween

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivities are serious business in Oaxaca. Though it’s a festival for the dead, it’s by no means a horror show. As Travel + Leisure previously explained, the event is in honour of those who’ve passed from this world to the next and is a way to keep their spirit alive today. The celebration takes place over two days, with families decorating the graves of their deceased loved ones and crafting ornate altars at home to further honour them. Travellers can join the revelry in the form of parades and parties throughout the town of San Miguel de Allende, which keeps the festivities going through November 2.

Transylvania, Romania

Romania

As the home of Count Dracula, Transylvania has a lot to live up to during the Halloween season, but it more than delivers on its spooky offerings. Travellers to Transylvania can visit Bran Castle , the home of the mythical count, which is open every day for tours. The castle even hosts a yearly Halloween bash that includes a nighttime tour, a party, and an open bar.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Best places for Halloween

New Orleans is a town known for its revelry. Yes, its Mardi Gras celebrations are second to none, but its Halloween parties aren’t too shabby either. In October, the city busts out its decorations and its best costumes for parades and parties galore. Don’t miss the ghost tours in the French Quarter if you’re looking to send a few shivers down your spine before joining the festivities .

Paris, France

Paris

Looking for a Halloween event that’s très chic? Head to Paris. The City of Lights may not be the place where you’ll find the typical trick-or-treat crowd, but what you will find is La Toussain t , or All Saints’ Day, a day to remember friends and family who have passed, which is both a national and Catholic holiday. Like Day of the Dead in Mexico, families take this day to honour their loved ones by visiting their graves and placing flowers on top. There are more light-hearted events throughout the city, including parties at Disneyland Paris and Le Manoir de Paris , arguably the biggest and coolest haunted house in Europe.

Best places for Halloween

Scotland, like Ireland, has strong ties to Halloween’s past. As Visit Scotland explained, the name Halloween comes from the Scottish shortening of “All Hallows’ Eve.” While you can certainly attend any number of events to honor the day, for a longer journey, try exploring the nation’s Ghost Trail, a map of 15 locations around the nation that are said to be some of the most haunted spots on the planet. End the tour at the Samhuinn Fire Festival in Edinburgh for a delightful conclusion.

Venice and Borgo a Mozzano, Italy

Best places for Halloween

Italy isn’t exactly a Halloween-crazed nation, but one place you’ll find plenty of ghoulish fun is Venice. It too is a destination well-known among the ghost hunting circuit, especially on the island of Poveglia. The island once acted as a quarantine zone for people suffering from the plague and was even used as an insane asylum in the early 20th century, making it an absolute hub for paranormal activity. As for the parties, you’ll have to head to the town of Borgo a Mozzano, which sits just north of Lucca. There, you’ll find a massive annual Halloween bash on the appropriately named Devil’s Bridge .

Best places for Halloween

Hong Kong loves a good party, and Halloween is no exception. Like other destinations on this list, it’s not really a place where you’ll find trick-or-treaters on the street, but you will find festive events nonetheless, especially in places like Hong Kong Disneyland , which goes toe-to-toe with its global counterparts for the season. Hong Kong’s other theme park, Ocean Park , also throws an annual bash that’s not to be missed, and you’ll typically find a plethora of happenings in Lan Kwai Fong, the city’s famed party district, that are all worthy of a visit (though things have been uncharacteristically quiet here due to the pandemic, it appears that may be changing .)

Savannah, Georgia

Georgia

Savannah, Georgia is the place to go in the UA. if you want to be almost guaranteed a ghost sighting. The southern city is brimming with ghost stories thanks to haunted hotels, buildings, bars, and more, which can all be experienced through its plentiful ghost tours. Because of its connection to the spirits, Savannah is a stellar place to go for epic trick-or-treating for kids and parties for adults. See all of the city’s event listings here to stay up-to-date on yearly happenings.

Prague, Czech Republic

Best places for Halloween

Halloween is quickly becoming a more popular holiday in Prague thanks to the growing expat community. Though you’ll only find a very sparse trick-or-treating scene, it’s a place filled with gothic architecture that feels both utterly romantic and absolutely spooky all at once. The city is even home to a torture museum , which is absolutely more terrifying to visit than any fake haunted house in your home town.

Brussels, Belgium

Belgium

Brussels may not have a long history with Halloween, but it sure has dedicated itself to becoming a Halloween hotspot in recent years. The city hosts parades in Saint-Gilles , and several bars and restaurants host their own gatherings. None, however, are as spooky as Le Cercueil , which translates to “coffins” in French. The bar is spooky all year long and those visiting can toast over a table made from a coffin, one of which comes with clear plexiglass so you can see the skeleton inside.

It’s time to start thinking about your summer travel plans.

Whether you want to go across the globe or stay within the county, Google Flights has something for everyone on its list of the top destinations for summer 2024.

The list — which is based on the destinations most searched for by travelers within the U.S. on Google Flights for travel between June 1 and Aug. 31, according to The Points Guy — shows a lot of the trendy, expected locations, but it has some surprising outliers as well.

Paris

The most popular destination for summer 2024 is London while, perhaps surprisingly, Paris — which will host the upcoming Summer Olympics — only landed in the second-place spot.

Tokyo came in third, a jump from its eighth-place ranking in 2023.

Rounding out the top five is Rome at No. 4, and the first destination in the U.S. at No. 5 — New York.

London

Cancun might have been in second place last year, but it’s not as popular in 2024, dropping into sixth place.

Seventh, eighth and ninth place were all within the U.S. as well, with lots of travelers searching for Orlando, Las Vegas and Seattle, respectively.

tokyo

Finishing up the top 10 is Athens — but not the one in Georgia: Greece is a hot travel destination for this summer.

Other popular U.S. destinations in the hotter months include Los Angeles, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Honolulu, Denver and Boston.

Madrid and San Juan, Puerto Rico, both broke into the top 20 for the first time in spots 18 and 20, respectively.

Best places to work in 2024? Here's what US employees had to say about their employers

The winners are in for Energage's Top Workplaces 2024 competition.

Two mortgage lending companies, a certified public accountant firm, a staffing business and a credit union are among the top workplaces in the U.S.

The rankings are part of the fourth-annual survey co-sponsored by Energage and USA TODAY.

The Top Workplaces USA awards offer recognition to midsize and large organizations, including those with operations in multiple markets. Employers with at least 150 employees are eligible.

Winners are identified solely based on employee feedback gathered through the Energage employee engagement survey. Companies were chosen based on the results of surveys taken over 12 months in 2023.

The top five winners among organizations with more than 2,500 employees are:

1. Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp., a mortgage lending company based in Madison, Wisconsin.

2. Plante Moran, a certified public accountants and consultants firm in Southfield, Michigan.

3. Aya Healthcare, a travel nursing staffing firm based in San Diego.

4. New American Funding, a mortgage lending firm in Tustin, California.

5. Mountain America Credit Union, headquartered in Salt Lake City.

There are also winners in three other categories: companies with 1,000 to 2,499 employees, organizations with 500 to 999 employees and organizations with 150 to 499 people on staff. Energage ranked the top 100 employers in each of the four categories and then listed the remaining winners in alphabetical order.

More than 7,000 employers nationwide were invited to take the challenge and 2,227 followed through with an employee survey process. Ultimately, 1,531 employers received recognition.

“A Top Workplaces award brings a company’s culture strengths to the national stage, helping them differentiate in a fiercely competitive landscape,'' said Eric Rubino, Energage CEO. "It’s a morale-boosting honor for the workforce and an effective magnet for attracting top-tier talent.”

Dragon's Dogma 2: How to Use Portcrystals (& Best Places To Put Portcrystals)

Portcrystals are the main Fast Travel system in DD2 – this guide explains how to use them, and details some of the best places to put Portcrystals.

One thing about Dragon's Dogma 2 that some players aren't prepared for is its lack of convenient Fast Travel systems , especially for a modern open-world game. But in addition to taking Oxcarts from one location to another, players can get items that allow them to essentially place custom Fast Travel points out in the world.

Dragon's Dogma 2: What to Do With Jasper, Onyx, and Tiger Eye

In Dragon's Dogma 2 Portcrystals are relatively rare items , but once acquired, they let players do exactly this. When used, a Portcrystal serves as a Fast Travel point wherever it was set to – this guide explains exactly how to use Portcrystals, and where some of the best Portcrystal placement locations are in Dragon's Dogma 2 .

How To Place Portcrystals in Dragon's Dogma 2

To place a Portcrystal, you must be in an area where the game will allow its placement, like just outside city gates or in the open world somewhere. Open up your inventory, scroll down to the item in your All tab, and select it. Accept the prompt that appears, and the menu should simply close as your character places the Portcrystal on the ground.

After using a Portcrystal, you can teleport back to the point you set it to by using a Ferrystone. Unfortunately, you can't scroll over to the Portcrystal's location on the world map and press an input to quickly travel to it – you must use a Ferrystone from your inventory, which brings up a map that highlights all of your active Portcrystals .

Dragon's Dogma 2: Max Level Explained

Essentially, Portcrystals allows players to set a custom Fast Travel point, but they still require one Ferrystone to travel to. Custom Portcrystal locations can be set virtually anywhere in the open world, and they can save tremendous travel time when placed optimally.

Best Portcrystal Placement Locations in DD2

After acquiring your first Portcrystal, don't be too hasty to place it. These items are very limited in number, so it's not a good idea to place them in random locations – only eight can be acquired in-game, though more can be purchased from the Dragon's Dogma 2 MTX store.

These eight locations are the best places to put Portcrystals in DD2 . Bakbattahl should be your number one priority for Portcrystal placement because it does not have one, despite its size and importance in the story. All other locations listed below are recommended for the sake of convenience.

  • Dragonforge Cave
  • Volcanic Island Camp
  • Sacred Arbor
  • Checkpoint Rest Town
  • Nameless Village

Your priorities should be Bakbattahl, the Dragonforge Cave, and the Volcanic Island Camp. All other locations are not necessarily difficult to get to, but the Arisen can save a lot of travel time by placing one there at some point in their journey.

There are a few locations in the game that have Portcrystals naturally, like Harve Village and Vernworth, so be sure to check your map and make sure you aren't close to another Portcrystal before placing one in a location not listed above.

New report ranks best and most affordable places to live in America

Did your hometown make the list? A few US cities are hotspots on this year's ranking, with multiple neighborhoods in the top 10.

Covered bridge in Naperville, Illinois

  • Tod Caviness
  • March 27, 2024

Prepare to swell with local pride or seethe with envy, depending on where you live. For the 10th year running, Niche.com has released their annual list ranking the best cities and places to live, and you might be surprised at the results for 2024.

It’s clear from both lists that Niche doesn’t play favorites with cities that are well known. You won’t find famous hotspots like Miami, Chicago or New York City anywhere in the top 10, for instance. Niche is a site that’s primarily focused on helping students and families find a school that fits their needs, and a place to live near that school.

MORE: This is the salary you need to live comfortably in 25 US cities

For their rankings, they use their own proprietary data about schools and the housing market as well as statistics from the U.S. Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics and other federal sources. Diversity, affordability, walkability and other factors are added to the mix, along with community reviews on the site to find the best.

The rankings this year rate over 18,000 places and nearly 230 cities, and Texas makes a good showing when it comes to urban areas. The Lone Star State has two spots in the top five list of cities: The Woodlands ( No. 2) and Plano (No. 5).

The top city overall? Naperville, Illinois, up from the No. 4 slot in 2023. It gets an A+ rating from Niche in the categories of “Public Schools” and “Good for Families.” Anonymous reviewers on the site praise its riverwalk (shown below) as “something out of a fairytale” and love the fact that it’s a short 30-minute train ride away from Chicago. Unsurprisingly, Naperville also took No. 1 in a separate list of Best Cities to Raise a Family in America. Last year’s top city, Cambridge, Massachusetts, slips to a respectable No. 3.

2024 Best Cities To Live In America

Riverwalk in Naperville, Illinois

Here are Niche’s top 10 Best Cities to Live in America for 2024. Niche defines a city as “a principal city for an urbanized area with a population of 100,000 or more.”

  • The Woodlands, Texas
  • Cambridge, Massachusetts
  • Arlington, Virginia
  • Plano, Texas
  • Irvine, California
  • Columbia, Maryland
  • Overland Park, Kansas
  • Ann Arbor, Michigan
  • Bellevue, Washington

2024 Best Places To Live In America

Niche also ranked the best places to live, which include “non-rural town(s) with a population of 1,000 or more.” The top town for 2024 is Colonial Village, which also happens to be a neighborhood in Arlington, Virginia — No. 4 on this year’s list of top cities.

It moved up from its No. 2 spot last year, displacing Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania to No. 3. Niche rates Colonial Village an A+ for its public schools, nightlife and commute, among other factors. The Tampa, Florida area also made a great showing on this year’s rankings, with three neighborhoods in the top 10: Uptown (No. 4), Hyde Park/Spanishtown Creek (No. 6, shown below) and Harbour Island (No. 9).

Palace of Florence in Hyde Park Historic District of Tampa

Here are the top 10 Places to Live in America , according to Niche:

  • Colonial Village, Virginia (neighborhood in Arlington)
  • Carmel, Indiana
  • Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania (suburb of Philadelphia)
  • Uptown, Florida (neighborhood in Tampa)
  • Cinco Ranch, Texas (suburb of Houston)
  • Hyde Park/Spanishtown Creek, Florida (neighborhood in Tampa)
  • Evergreen Park, California (neighborhood in Palo Alto)
  • Radnor/Fort Myer Heights, Virginia (neighborhood in Arlington)
  • Harbour Island, Florida (neighborhood in Tampa)
  • College Terrace, California (neighborhood in Palo Alto)

Niche also broke down their rankings to find the locales that are the “Best for Families,” “Most Diverse,” “Best for Retirees” — the list goes on. You can find them all on the Best Places to Live page on Niche.com.

The 10 Best Places To See The 2024 Solar Eclipse In The South

best places to travel halloween

What Is A Solar Eclipse?

When is the 2024 solar eclipse, where to see the eclipse in texas, where to see the eclipse in arkansas, where to see the eclipse in missouri, where to see the eclipse in kentucky, where to see the solar eclipse in oklahoma.

On Monday, April 8, a historic solar eclipse is set to pass through the United States, Mexico, and Canada—making it the only eclipse in the 21 st century to pass through all three countries. In the U.S., 13 states are partially in the path of totality, and five of those states are in the South. Parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kentucky will all experience a total solar eclipse (the first since 2017), and everyone’s gearing up for the big show. From town festivals to hosted watch parties to hotel packages to food and drink specials, no one intends to let this momentous occasion pass without a bit of fanfare. Here are the best Southern places where you can see the solar eclipse in 2024 . Just don’t forget your special solar eclipse-watching glasses or you could seriously harm your eyesight!

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on the Earth that blocks out some or all of the Sun’s rays. This rare phenomenon causes the sky to darken during the middle of the day as if it were dusk or dawn. Places that are in the eclipse’s path of totality (meaning the Moon is perfectly positioned to fully block the Sun), will see the most dramatic darkening.

The 2024 solar eclipse will take place on Monday, April 8, but when you see the eclipse depends on where you lie on its path. The eclipse will start in the U.S. at 1:27 p.m. CST in Texas and then travel in a northeast path until it appears in Maine beginning at 3:29 p.m. EST and concluding at 3:33 p.m. EST.

Texas is one of the best places to see the eclipse because the eclipse will take a wide route through the state, meaning dozens of towns will experience totality. Forecasts also show clear skies for much of the state, providing optimal viewing conditions.

San Antonio, Texas

Firmly in the path of totality, the Alamo City is ready to do the solar eclipse right. There will be viewing parties big and small popping up all over the city on April 8, but one of the best spots to see the show is from the rooftop of the Thompson San Antonio Riverwalk hotel. Sitting high at 20 stories above the famous Riverwalk, the hotel’s signature indoor-outdoor rooftop restaurant The Moon’s Daughters is an ideal spot to take it all in. Join for a special Solar Brunch from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (just before totality begins) complete with themed cocktails, entertainment, and complimentary viewing glasses.

Fort Worth, Texas

Another city in the path of totality, Fort Worth will experience totality for about 2 minutes and 30 seconds starting at 1:40 p.m. CST. The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and the Fort Worth Botanic Garden will co-host a community watch party that will include family-friendly games, entertainment, and education. Those visiting from out of town can stay at the Crescent Hotel and take advantage of their special Eclipse Package that includes accommodations, a $50 food and beverage credit for a special eclipse happy hour at the Circle Bar, and complimentary glasses so you can view the show from the lawn of the Kimbell Art Museum directly across the street.

Houston, Texas

Though Houston doesn’t fall in the path of totality, it will see 94% obscuration which is pretty high compared to lots of other places around the U.S. that will see much less. One reason to watch in Houston is to attend the Total Solar Eclipse Celebration at the Space Center Houston . There’s no better experience than to visit the museum and space center, learn all about the galaxies, and then round out your trip by seeing a rare natural phenomenon.

Grapevine, Texas

The wide-open spaces and gorgeous vistas of the Texas Hill Country make Grapevine a top place to consider for eclipse travel. The small town is going all out for the eclipse with a giant party in the Main Street Historic District with local restaurants and businesses featuring galactic-themed food and drink specials. They’re also offering a VIP Experience at Peace Plaza, and boutique property Hotel Vin will release a special limited-edition Eclipse Bourbon and host a Lunar Lunch.

Kerrville, Texas

As the Primary Eclipse Partner for NASA, you may as well call this small town in Texas Hill Country Solar Eclipse Central. NASA will host the Kerrville Eclipse Festival beginning at 10 a.m. on April 8 at Louise Hays Park, which is just a few miles from the exact center line of totality. Programming will include scientific speakers, live music, children’s activities, and a great place to experience 4 minutes and 25 seconds of totality.

A large portion of Arkansas will also experience eclipse totality on the 8 th , making it an equally desirable place to visit for the galactic event.

Little Rock, Arkansas

Head to the state’s capital for an eclipse party to remember. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is hosting a full-day of activities that range from educational talks to family-friendly games and laser demonstrations. Totality will reach Little Rock at 1:51 p.m. CST and last for about 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

Hot Springs, Arkansas

As one of only two national parks in the path of totality for the 2024 eclipse, Hot Springs National Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas might be one of the most sought-after destinations for eclipse viewing. The park has only been in the path of totality two other times—once in 1834 and another time in 1918. The next time the eclipse reaches Arkansas will be 2045, so don’t miss your chance to get in on the action. Eclipse Fest , featuring presentations from visiting scientists, activities, and demonstrations, will take place in the park on Arlington Lawn on April 6-7.

A much smaller portion of Missouri is in the path of totality than in Arkansas and Texas, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still great places to see the eclipse in the Show Me State.

Branson, Missouri

Though Branson didn’t quite make the cut-off for totality, the city will experience nearly 99% obscurity. If you’re looking for a larger city with plenty of amenities for your eclipse trip, Branson is your spot. For a scenic home base from which to take in the eclipse, head to Branson Lakes Resort or Branson Woods Resort , both of which are offering Eclipse Watch Parties featuring themed snacks, games, and music.

Only a couple places in Kentucky will experience totality. Luckily, the charming town of Paducah is one of them.

Paducah, Kentucky

Small town vibes with big city perks like great dining and accommodations make Paducah a wonderful place to visit . The town celebrates the eclipse with their X Marks the Spot event, a two-day community festival in historic downtown that will include street vendors, arts and crafts activities, and specials at local restaurants and bars.

Only 11 destinations in Oklahoma will experience totality, but most are teeny tiny. Broken Bow is one of only a handful with a population over 2,000.

Broken Bow, Oklahoma

The total eclipse will last for 4 minutes and 17 seconds in Broken Bow, starting at 1:45 p.m. CST, which is one of the longest durations for a U.S. destination outside of Texas. If you’re looking for a quieter experience to watch the eclipse with loved ones, book a cabin around Broken Bow Lake, pre-order special viewing glasses online, and host your own private watch party.

Total solar eclipse 2024: Path, time and the best places to view

Scroll down to see the list of U.S. cities where the April 8 total solar eclipse will be visible, the duration of the eclipse in those locations and what time totality will begin, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com .

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path.

Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

Eclipse map, path of totality

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.
