Japan rail pass

The Japan Rail Pass , or JR Pass, is a special railway ticket that allows holders to use railroads throughout Japan on the JR Hokkaido, JR East, JR Central, JR West, JR Shikoku, and JR Kyushu lines. With the pass, you can board trains and buses operated by Japan Railways (JR) for no additional fee.

The JR Pass offers unlimited travel on the railway network of the six JR Group companies. The JR is the largest railway network in Japan, which runs from Hokkaido in the north, down to Kyushu in the south. The railways connect all major cities, including Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and more.

Check the official JR Pass website for additional information.

2. Who Can Use the JR Pass: Eligibility

The Japan Rail Pass is ideal for visitors to Japan planning on visiting multiple cities or areas such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, as well as smaller cities throughout the country. It is also for travelers who plan on using the bullet train , local trains, and public transportation to get around Japan. As public transportation in Japan is widespread and convenient, it is highly recommended to use trains and Shinkansen.

The following conditions must be met in order to use the JR Pass: 1. You are visiting Japan on a tourist visa and hold a non-Japanese passport. Your status in Japan is "temporary visitor." 2. You are a Japanese national living outside Japan and have been residing abroad for 10 years or more.

3. Japan Rail Pass Prices and Types

*For children aged 6 - 11, the JR Pass costs half the price of an adult pass. Children aged 12 and above require an adult JR Pass. *Infants under 6 do not require a JR Pass as long as they seat on the lap of their adult companion.

JR Passes come in different varieties (regular/ordinary and green car) and three different lengths: 7, 14, or 21 days.

The green car type refers to the green cars on Shinkansen and local trains. It is the equivalent of a first-class train seat, which is more spacious, with a footrest and power outlets for each seat. It is ideal for those looking to maximize comfort and convenience while traveling, or those looking to work while on the train.

4. The Benefits of Using the Japan Rail Pass

For those wondering if they should purchase the JR Pass or not, as stated above, it is an ideal pass when seeing multiple areas in Japan. In general, it will save money for those traveling to two or more places in Japan, using the Shinkansen.

Below is an example of how much money you can save with the Japan Rail Pass.

For example, if you travel from Tokyo to Kyoto and then to Hiroshima, then back to Tokyo using the Kodama bullet train with an unreserved seat ticket without the pass, your total will be:

Tokyo to Kyoto : 13,850 yen Kyoto to Hiroshima : 7,460 yen Hiroshima to Tokyo : 21,310 yen --> Round-trip total: 42,620 yen

Since the 7-day JR Pass costs 29,650, you can save at least 12,970 yen on bullet train travel alone. The JR Pass covers the cost of your tickets on JR trains and buses at your destination, too, allowing you to save even more.

5. How to Get the Japan Rail Pass from Abroad

Visitors to Japan are usually required to book the JR Pass in advance, before arriving to Japan. Below is a step-by-step guide to purchasing the pass.

1. Obtain an "Exchange Order" Before Your Departure to Japan

A paper called an "exchange order" is needed to obtain a JR Pass in Japan. This order can normally only be reserved and purchased when outside Japan. It is valid for up to three months after purchase; this means that you can activate and use your JR Pass only up to three months after the issue date of the exchange order.

You can get an exchange order through major travel Japanese agencies such as JTB, Kintetsu Travel, Nippon Travel Agency, and Tobu Top Tours, and their associated international offices. If your flight to Japan uses JAL and ANA airlines, you can also reserve the pass through them.

Alternatively, you can book your JR Pass on Klook , a ticket booking website.

2. Trade Your Exchange Order for a Japan Rail Pass in Japan

Once you arrive in Japan, bring your exchange order to a JR Travel Service Center . These centers are located at Japan's major airports and major JR stations. You will also be required to show your passport , so be sure to have it on hand. After the exchange, you will receive your actual JR Pass.

For more information on JR Travel Service Center locations, visit the official JR Pass website: https://japanrailpass.net/en/

6. How to Get the Japan Rail Pass in Japan

JR pass

As a rule, the JR Pass should be booked beforehand at registered travel agencies located outside of Japan.

However, the JR Pass can also be purchased in Japan until March 31, 2024 at selected locations such as the train stations at the Narita Airport Terminals 1, 2, and 3, as well as the JR Tokyo Station, JR Shinjuku Station, and JR Osaka Station.

Please refer to the official website for a complete list of locations selling the JR Pass in Japan .

Please be aware that buying the JR Pass in Japan is slightly more expensive than purchasing it abroad: the regular JR Pass costs 33,610 yen for 7 days, 52,960 yen for 14 days, and 66,200 yen for 21 days. Please check official JR Pass website for details.

7. How to Use the Japan Rail Pass

JR Pass

Once you have the JR Pass in hand, you can use it freely to ride JR trains, the Shinkansen (bullet train), and other public transportation listed on the pass, such as the ferry to Miyajima in Hiroshima. However, there are certain restrictions and tricks to using the pass, as listed below.

To use the JR pass for the first time , enter the JR station through the entrance attended by station staff. When you show them your pass and passport, they will write the date on the pass. Your pass is valid from the start of the first time of use. This area will be located on one side of the ticket barriers.

Even after the first time you use the pass, continue to enter and exit JR stations through the ticket gate attended by station staff . Show your JR pass to the attendant and have your passport ready to show as well. You cannot use the automated gates at train stations.

8. Restrictions on the JR Pass

JR Pass Shinkansen

Some restrictions apply to the JR pass, so be sure to check the pass itself before using it.

Please note that only JR transportation is covered by the JR Pass. If you make a transfer to a different railway or transportation company a separate fee will be required.

Also, JR Pass holders cannot board the Nozomi and Mizuho bullet trains on the Shinkansen line. These are the fastest bullet trains. In order to use the, you will need to pay a separate fee. Long-distance JR highway buses are not covered by the JR Pass either.

Making a Shinkansen Reservation with the JR Pass

seat reservation with JR Pass

Shinkansen and rapid JR trains offer both reserved and unreserved seating. Without a reserved seat, you may have to end up standing in the unreserved seat car. This can occur during rush hours on weekdays, weekends, and public holidays in Japan. An advance seat booking is highly recommended for comfortable travel.

Seat reservations are free for Japan Rail pass holders . However, you must book your seat in advance at JR ticket offices. You can make a reservation just before your train departs, but if possible, visit the JR ticket offices called Midori no Madoguchi at least one day prior to your departure for smooth travel. They are located at major JR stations and will usually have English and multi-language support.

Use the Budget-Friendly Japan Rail Pass

The Japan Rail Pass provides significant savings on transportation. Especially if it is your first time seeing Japan, the Japan Rail Pass is a great value and fits well with a first-time travel itinerary.

With some preparation and familiarity with using the pass, your trip will be smooth and hassle-free!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the process to obtain a japan rail pass through nippon travel agency.

Acquiring a Japan Rail Pass through the Nippon Travel Agency is an easy and straightforward process but requires prior attention as it cannot be done upon arrival in Japan. Here are the steps:

Remember, the Japan Rail Pass offers unlimited travel on almost all trains operated by Japan Railways Group across the country, including Shinkansen bullet trains, limited express, express, and local trains, JR buses, and even the JR West Miyajima ferry.

Japanese citizen? Please read carefully

Japanese citizens need a certificate from the Japanese Embassy verifying that you have resided outside Japan for at least 10 consecutive years. This certificate must be issued BEFORE you order your JR Pass to be approved in Japan and must be a maximum of 6 months old when you exchange your MCO voucher with JR in Japan.

Children over the age of 12 need their own certificate from the embassy, even if they have never lived in Japan. Children under the age of 12 can have their name inscribed in a parent’s certificate however. Please email us for more information before purchasing if you have any questions.

Compare the passes

Standard pass vs green jr pass.

The “Green” carts on the train are equipped with larger windows, a more quiet environment, newspapers, nicer seats, more legroom and more space for your luggage. All this along with better service, free drinks on some trains and shorter queues.

Some trains offers their passengers a free ‘oshibori’. A kind of towel that can be either hot or cold depending on the season.

Budget friendly

Useful and worth to think about

A Japan Rail Pass is fantastic!

Discover the beautiful country of Japan with help of a Japan Rail Pass and travel across the country in super-speed on Shinkansen bullet trains. Choose between the standard, best value for the buck pass or the first class version of the JR Pass called a “Green Pass”. Regardless of your choice, you’ll have a great stay in Japan!

What is a Green Pass and why should I buy one?

The standard JR Pass is valid for travel on most JR trains, including local, rapid, and express trains. This pass is suitable for travelers who want to explore different parts of Japan and visit multiple cities to a great discounted price.

The green JR Pass, on the other hand, is a higher-class version of the standard pass and is valid for travel on the Green Car trains, which are the first-class carriages on certain JR trains. Green Car trains offer more spacious seating and a quieter atmosphere, making them a good choice for travelers who want a more comfortable journey. However, the green pass is more expensive than the standard pass and is only available on certain routes. You are still able to travel in the normal wagons if the route doesn’t have a Green area.

What is the real diffrence between Standard pass and a Green pass?

The green Japan Rail Pass is considered to be a better option than the standard pass for a few reasons. First, the green pass allows access to Green Car trains, which are the first-class carriages on certain JR trains. These trains offer more spacious seating and a quieter atmosphere, making them a more comfortable option for travelers.

Finally, the green pass may also be a good choice for travelers who are willing to pay a higher price for a more luxurious and comfortable travel experience. However, it’s important to note that the green pass is more expensive than the standard pass, so it may not be the best option for travelers on a tight budget.

How much money can I save with a JR Pass?

A Japan Rail Pass can save travelers a significant amount of money on train travel within Japan. The exact amount of money that a JR Pass can save depends on the type of pass and the travel itinerary of the individual traveler.

For example, if a traveler purchases a standard JR Pass for seven days, they can expect to save around 20,000 to 30,000 yen (approximately 180 to 270 EUR) on train travel, compared to purchasing individual train tickets. A green JR Pass for the same duration can save travelers around 30,000 to 40,000 yen (approximately 270 to 360 EUR). These estimates are based on the average cost of train tickets in Japan and may vary depending on the specific route and class of service.

Overall, a Japan Rail Pass can save travelers a considerable amount of money on train travel within Japan and is a good option for those who are planning to visit multiple cities and use the train as their primary mode of transportation.

Why should I buy a Japan Rail Pass?

Convenience.

The JR Pass gives you access to a wide range of trains, including the high-speed Shinkansen trains, local trains, and even some buses and ferries. This means that you can easily travel between cities, visit multiple destinations in a day and take day trips without worrying about purchasing separate tickets for each leg of your journey.

Affordability

The cost of individual train tickets in Japan can add up quickly, especially if you are traveling long distances or using the Shinkansen. The JR Pass on the other hand, offers significant savings, especially if you plan to take multiple train trips during your stay.

Flexibility

With the Japan Rail Pass, you have the freedom to travel wherever and whenever you want, without being limited by schedules or fare restrictions. You can also change your travel plans on the fly, as the JR Pass is valid for a specified period of time, giving you the flexibility to adjust your itinerary as needed.

The trains in Japan are known for their comfort and punctuality, and the JR Pass gives you access to them. You can relax in your seat, enjoy the scenery, and arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready to explore.

Ease of use

The JR Pass is easy to use, with clear instructions and English-language signage at stations and on trains. You can simply present your Japan Rail Pass at the gate and board the train, without worrying about finding the right ticket or fare.

Stress free travel

With the Japan Rail Pass, you can avoid the stress and uncertainty of trying to navigate the complex and crowded public transportation system in Japan. You can focus on enjoying your trip and making the most of your time, knowing that you have a reliable and affordable means of transportation.

Exclusive discounts and perks

In addition to unlimited travel on the JR network, the JR Pass also offers exclusive discounts and perks, such as discounts on selected JR-affiliated hotels and rental cars.

Cultural experience

Riding the trains in Japan is a cultural experience in itself, and the JR Pass gives you the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in this unique and efficient transportation system. You can observe the customs and traditions of Japanese train travel, such as bowing to the conductor.

Value for money

The JR Pass offers excellent value for money, especially if you are planning to travel extensively in Japan. You can save hundreds of dollars on train fares and take advantage of the convenience and comfort of the JR network.

Easy to purchase

The JR Pass can be purchased online through a travel agent before your trip to Japan. Getjrpass.com is an official travel agent and seller of the Japan Rail Pass, listed as a partner on the official Japan Rail Pass website. You are in safe hands.

Frequently asked questions

Can i buy my jr pass at jr offices in japan.

The JR Pass can not be bought over disk in Japan, make sure to order your Japan Rail Pass before your trip.

What shipping provider do you use?

We are mainly using UPS for international shipping unless other shipping provider is requested. Keep in mind that we only have contract with UPS and Postnord (EMS), and for that reason might request additional payment if another alternativt is requested by the buyer other than UPS and EMS. No additional cost is added to the order if using the normal UPS or EMS alternative included in the shipping cost upon purchase.

Do you ship to Japan?

We do ship to your hotel in Japan, but we recommend a purchase atleast 2 weeks before your arrival if so due to unexpected delays in the shipping. Keep in mind that we can not deliver to your Airbnb, only hotels with a service desk.

Do I have to pay import tax?

No, the MCO voucher has no physical value and the value of the purchase stays in Japan during the entire time. Your MCO voucher is only an original receipt required to bring to Japan for exchange of a Japan Rail Pass. The passes are shipped as non-value documents, since they can be cancelled if lost in transit.

Can I bring a photo copy?

Sadly no. The original MCO document sent to you by post with UPS has to be brought to Japan in its original form and exchanged for a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) at your local and nearest JR office.

How do I activate my JR Pass?

Bring your MCO voucher along with your passport (and certificate from the embassy if you’re a Japanese citizen) to your nearest JR office and exchange for a Japan Rail Pass. You have 90 days to exchange the voucher for a JR Pass after it has been issued and sent out by Getjrpass. Check out our video tutorial!

Can I use my JR Pass for the metro?

The metro lines are not owned by JR, but JR has their own lines in Tokyo – such as the popular Yamanote loop line taking you to known stations such as Ueno, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Akihabara, Tokyo Station and much more! Having a JR Pass allowing you to use all of it freely.

Cities like Tokyo usually need you to combine both a metro train and JR line train to reach your destination as they cover different parts of the city. They do however have stations in many of the same locations, as an example Akihabara Station and JR Akihabara Station.

Are the any exceptions?

The Japan Rail Pass allows you to travel on MOST lines covered by JR. There are just a few non-included trains, such as Nozomi Shinkansen trains on the Tokaido Line and Mizuho trains on the Kyushu Shinkansen lines. These lines are however covered by other Shinkansen trains with similar speed, just slightly more stops along the way.

Tokyo > Kyoto with Nozomi Shinkansen = 2h 30m.

Tokyo > Kyoto with Hikari Shinkansen = 2h 47m.

Hikari is included in your Japan Rail Pass and only takes around 12-17 minutes longer.

Since October 1st 2023, you can now pay a small fee to upgrade your JR Pass train ride to Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen trains. Contact us for more information.

When do I order my JR Pass?

We recommend all our customers to order their Japan Rail Pass atleast 2 weeks before their departure. We can not take any responsible or do anything to effect shipping delays caused by UPS or force majeure. Keep in mind that the Japan Rail Passes can be unissued if lost in transport along the way, and new ones be shipped out. For this reason, spare a few extra days incase anything unexpected happens.

How quick do you ship my order?

We will send out your order the next work day at latest, but we always try to send out our orders the same day to save the buyer an extra day of transit if not palced too late. Late orders will however be shipped the next work day, as UPS require the order at their pick-up point before 15:00 CET.

I'm a Japanese citizen, can I order a JR Pass?

Japanese citizens are required to bring a certificate from the embassy as proof that thay been living aborad for atleast 10 consecutive years. This document has to be issued before we issue the JR Passes and be a maximum of 6 months old when you exchange the MCO’s in Japan. Read more here .

I will go to Japan as a student with JR Pass

Sadly you are required to have a Temporary Visitor Visa to exchange your voucher in Japan, which you won’t be given if you enter Japan on a student visa.

Is a Japan Rail Pass good value?

Well, compared to multiple fares without one, yes. The price for a roundtrip ticket to Osaka or Kyoto from Tokyo is as expensive as a 7 days Japan Rail Pass, which makes the JR Pass a very good value for the money if you plan on going anywhere else. The passes can be used on multiple trains, bullet trains, busses and boat fairs under JR’s name on top of the Shinkansen lines.

Am I eligible for a Japan Rail Pass?

To be eligible for a Japan Rail Pass, you need a 15, 30 or 90 days Temporary Visitor Visa. This sticker or stamp is printed in your passport upon arrival. Most tourist will be granted a temporary visitor visa automatically upon arrival, while some need to apply for it before hand. Check with the Japanese Embassy before going to Japan.

Is there a Japan Rail pass discount?

Yes! There are different discount and deals for JR Pass holders.

There is a 50% discount for children under the age of 12 and free fares for children under the age of 6. But JR does not offer any senior or similar discounts at this moment. All prices are fixed and set by JR Group.

The Japan Rail Pass itself is however a very valuable discount it self and allows you to save hundreds of euros on train, boat and buss fares as well as discounted prices on hundreds of hotels and tourist attractions across Japan. Read more about the JR Pass discounts here!

We have crated a list of all discounts and deals available with your JR Pass.
