Vera Hutasoit was my CEO, and was truly a fantastic guide. Very sweet person, energetic, and extremely knowledgable. Her presence improved the efficiency and depth of the overall experience a great deal. I hope you will consider promoting her in the near future – she deserves it! Aside from that, my only critical feedback would be the amount of in-transit time required to complete this trip in 9 days. We had several multiple-hour car trips and two eight-hour train rides. Due to this, there was very little 'down time' left to explore or simply relax in each destination city. Obviously, Java is a big island, and 9 days doesn't do it justice – I knew what I signed up for and I'd still recommend the experience to a friend. VERA IS THE BEST :)

Awesome! One of the best experiences of my life. Lots of travel but the levels of interaction with the local communities more than made up for the travel time.

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent trip to Yogyakarta. Our guide Andy and driver Yusef were excellent with good English, considerate, prompt, competent and helpful. The itinerary was great and had very personal and enjoyable opportunities to interact with locals. Truly other than some bad weather which no one controls, this tour more than met our expectations. I highly recommend!

We had an instructive 5 days. Andy and the driver were very friendly and obliging and proved ingenious in reworking our itinerary when the weather turned nasty. Andy was a cheerful companion and the driver’s skill and patience in negotiating the traffic were memorable. The driver’s knowledge of back streets and shortcuts was impressive. We learnt a lot on this trip. Michael & Anna

Amazing Java Bali Tours : Private & All Inclusive

Everything went very well. Java and Bali are both very beautiful islands and thanks to the very good tour guides who responded to our wishes, we were able to see and experience a lot. The tour itself should perhaps be reconsidered. Getting up at 3 a.m. two days in a row and then having a long day of traveling is a bit much. If feasible, a stopover wouldn't be a bad idea. However, the hotel in Bromo was an imposition for Europeans. There are much better ones nearby. Otherwise we were satisfied with the offer.

aggressive itinerary. Was able to experience all of Java.
The tour was as well organised, and run by a very capable tour leader as one has come to expect from Intrepid.
I had a lot of fun, met cool people and was socially exhausted after the trip. But i did things i would've else never done.

Highlights: Java

Although not the largest, Java is the main Indonesian island and seat of the federal government.

Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta, is home to more than half of the population of Indonesia, but for most visitors is little more than a jumping off point to explore Java. The island offers impressive scenery with a chain of volcanoes running down its length. One of the most famous is Mt Bromo: a visit here at sunrise offers a unique photo opportunity. Further south, the Ijen crater has miners carrying heavy loads of sulphur up the slopes and a picturesque turquoise lake which can mysteriously change colour, making the effort to get there well worthwhile.

The famous stupas at Borobudur are another highlight of a trip to Java. This large Buddhist temple complex surrounded by hills is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and thought to have been built in the 9th century. It is worth staying nearby to see at sunrise but can also be visited on a day trip from Yogyakarta. Yogyakarta is a popular town with famous markets and architecture and a good place to pick up arts and crafts or take in traditional cultural shows.

10 must-visit places in Java, Indonesia

Borobudur temple, Java

With thousands of islands, hundreds of languages and a mind-boggling mix of cities, beaches, volcanoes and rainforests, planning a trip to Indonesia can be mystifying.

If you’re a first time visitor, or just have a couple of weeks to spare, Java is the perfect solution. The biggest island in the country, Java is home to Indonesia’s busiest cities, its most famous sights, and over half of its friendly population.

Here’s just 10 highlights from this gem of South East Asia:

Colourful bikes in Jakarta

Bikes in Jakarta. Photo by Fajrul Islam.

The sprawling capital of Indonesia, Jakarta is the centre of the action and where you’ll discover just how diverse this country really is. Inhale the smells from Malay and Chinese cafes as you wander past 19th-century style Dutch buildings and listen to the call to prayer from a nearby mosque… all while suited executives make business deals in skyscraping offices around you.

2. Yogyakarta

Taman Sari water temple, Yogyakarta

If Jakarta is the brain of Java, then Yogyakarta is its heart and soul. The cultural centre of the island (and maybe even the whole of Indonesia), you’ll find batik workshops, life-changing street food, the famous Ramayana Ballet and so much more here. Take a quick bike ride through the city and suddenly you’re surrounded by rice paddies with brooding volcanoes in the distance.

Easily day-tripped from Yogya, Borobodur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple and not to be missed. If you’re not interested in the history – the complex dates from the 9th century – you’ll certainly be impressed by the views from the top. Equally impressive is nearby Prambanan, a Hindu temple complex that will take your breath away at sunset (or any other time of day).

Skipped over by most major guide books, Pangandaran is a lush slice of jungle in West Java with two main draws; the paradise-like Green Canyon, and no tourists. Take a boat upriver to swim in dreamy green water as towering, green-covered cliffs keep the rest of the world far, far away.

6. Seloliman Nature Reserve

Penanggungan Mountain.

The Seloliman Nature Reserve is Java’s ultimate jungle retreat. Nestled into the slopes of the sacred Penanggungan volcano, here is where you can learn about local farming and wildlife by day and stargaze by night. Organic, home-grown food and open air baths surrounded by nature will put some pep back in your step.

7. Mount Bromo

Mt Bromo, Java

There’s magic in the air at Mount Bromo, arguably the most iconic of Java’s many active volcanoes. Hiking through the Tengger Valley to catch a view of Bromo and the sea of peaks that surround it is, hands-down, the most breathtaking Indonesian experience of all. The (very) early morning start is well worth it for the sweeping sunrise views.

8. Kalibaru

People walking through rice paddies

Strolling through Kalibaru. Photo by Inspired By Maps

‘Wake up and smell the coffee’ is a way of life in Kalibaru; the foothills encircling this little town are top-to-toe coffee plantations. There’s not much to do here but see how cocoa and coffee beans are harvested, cool off in the milder climate, and look out over the hills as you sip a cup of joe straight from the source. If you’re in need of some rest and relaxation, you’ll get plenty of both here.

Historical city Malang in the heart of eastern Java is known for its temples, 19th-century Dutch-style architecture, and the technicolour houses of Kampung Warna Warni Jodipan. Your Instagram feed will be full of this village’s cheerful rainbow-painted roofs, and when you’re done snapping, there’s plenty of enticing food and captivating museums to tackle.

10. Sempu Island

Sempu Island, Java, Indonesia

Sempu Island. Photo by cahya nugraha.

If a tropical beach with no electricity, no phone signal, and no people is your idea of paradise, you’ll want to take a short boat trip from the coast of Java to Sempu Island. Trek to the lagoon in its centre for a sneak peek of what heaven looks like, or camp out on the white sand for the night before catching a boat back in the morning.

Getting around

What’s the best way to get around Java? By train, of course. Unlike other parts of Asia (and Indonesia), the train network in Java is extensive, trains are comfortable and (usually) punctual, and tickets are affordable. Grab a snack from the hawkers who hop on and off at every stop, settle in, and watch the scenery whizz by your windows.

Jungle & Rainforest Tours & Travel Guide

Jungle & Rainforest Attractions & Landmarks Guide

On a jungle tour, you will experience incredible wildlife and learn about ancient native cultures. You might encounter enormous silverback gorillas in Rwanda or hike through the dense intriguing Cloud Forest of Peru on your way to Machu Picchu. However you choose to traverse the jungle, Stride has the trip for you!

While scientifically the term “jungle” is not technically synonymous with ‘rainforest’ the two are still often used interchangeably. Tropical Rainforests cover only about 2% of the total earth surface (7% of dry land) they are home to over 50% of the world’s species. That’s quite a species to space ratio!

To be called a jungle or rainforest, these areas occupy typically tropical lands, are lush and dense, and most of all have a thick, heavy canopy which keeps much of the moisture from rainy seasons “trapped” underneath, between floor and sky. This creates incredibly unique microclimates at all stages of the journey from jungle floor to the canopy, and lends to the diversity of wildlife . It’s also why these beautiful and mysterious places are called Rainforests - because they remain damp and humid throughout the year.

Tours to the world’s top rainforests (and those more off the beaten path) usually focus on wildlife, photography, eco travel , and cultural immersion. Jungles are often visited via river cruise , such the Amazon in South America, or the Mekong in Southeast Asia. Despite their similar atmospheres, these jungles around the world maintain their own unique personalities, and all are well worth visiting.

Entering the jungle harkens back to the age of exploration, when European explorers embarked on voyages of discovery. Howler monkeys hoot in the distance, the buzz of literally millions of species from the smallest centipede to the most vocal bird. Thousands of jungle dwellers expertly camouflaged by dense foliage wait just out of sight.

Where Are Most of the World’s Rainforests Located?

So you’ve decided you want to see one of the world’s most beautiful rainforests before it’s too late.

Where should you go? Well, just about anywhere. Did you know that the rainforests of the world can be found on every continent except Antarctica? The largest ones are in South America, surrounding the Amazon River , and in Africa, along the Congo River.

Additionally, you can visit the earth’s top rainforests in Southeast Asia , parts of Australia and even North America’s Pacific Northwest and Northern Europe. These rainforests total about six percent of the earth’s surface and are home to more than half of our plant and animal species.

Look for the rainforests of the world here:

South America . Home to the world’s largest tropical rainforest, the Amazon, this amazingly diverse jungle is home to the greatest biodiversity on the planet.

Central Africa . The world’s second largest rainforest is located in Central America, as well as high cloud forest, mangrove swamps and flooded forests.

Southern Asia . Southeast Asia is home to rainforests from India and Burma to Malaysia, Java and Borneo. The largest mangrove forests in the world are found in Bangladesh.

Australia . You’ll find warm-temperate rainforests in New South Wales and Victoria, and cool-temperate rainforests in Victoria, Tasmania and at high altitudes in New South Wales and Queensland.

North America’s Pacific Northwest . Temperate rainforests are located from Prince William Sound in Alaska to the coast of British Columbia, all the way to northern California.

What Are the Largest Rainforests in the World?

Now that you know where all the rainforests of the world are located, which ones are the largest? The top five largest rainforests on Earth are:

  • The Amazon :  At 1.2 billion acres, the Amazon is home to 10 percent of the world’s known species of plants and animals.
  • The Congo :  Sadly one of the world’s most endangered ecosystems, this 1.5-million-square-mile rainforest is home to five national parks.
  • Bosawas Biosphere Reserve :  The largest rainforest you’ve never heard of, this northern Nicaraguan jungles is more than 5 million acres.
  • Daintree Rainforest :  Not only enormous, Queensland, Australia’s Daintree Rainforest is thought to be the world’s oldest.
  • Tongass National Forest :  Not where you might expect a rainforest, but Alaska’s Tongass is half-covered in rainforests and home to Alaska’s largest trees.

Common Animals to Spot in the Rainforest

As home to more than half of our plant and animal species, it’s practically impossible to visit one of the world’s rainforests and not see a dizzying array of wildlife. We promise you’ll return home even more inspired to help protect the rainforests’ biodiversity, as well as that of their surrounding rivers, forests and streams.

While you explore the world’s top rainforests, keep an eye out for:

1. Mountain gorillas -  Trips to the rainforests of Africa - Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo - may bring you up close and personal with a mountain gorilla, the largest living primate on Earth. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot the male troop leader, the silverback.

2. Blue morpho butterfly -  Look for these brilliant, blue-winged beauties, marked by their eyespots on the underside of their wings, intended to stave off predators.  Okapi. Since it’s a master of camouflage, you might miss the okapi, which is the closest living relative to a giraffe. Located in the tropical forest of Ituri in Central Africa, it’s recognizable by its striped hindquarters and brown hide.

Brown-throated three-toed sloth. Who doesn't want to see a sloth? Spot the slow-moving cutie up in the trees. Notice the slight green tinge on its fur - it grows on the sloth’s coat because it moves so slowly!

3. Jaguar -  They’re rare to glimpse in the world’s rainforests, but they’re there. Hidden by their spotted coats in bushes and trees, the jaguars prey on the rainforests armadillos, capybara, tapir, fish, birds and turtles.

4. Scarlet macaw -  Try to photograph this striking, large parrot, recognizable by its bright red, blue and yellow plumage and feathers.

5. Capybara -  ROUS, anyone? This rodent of unusual size is, in fact, the largest rodent on Earth, more than 100 pounds and two feet tall. It can hold its breath for up to five minutes so if you’re looking for one in a body of water, be patient.

6. Black howler monkey -  Listen for the unmistakable howl of this iconic rainforest monkey, which can be heard up to two miles away.

7. Sulawesi bear cuscus - Predominantly found on the island of Sulawesi in the rainforests of Indonesia, this marsupial isn’t really a bear at all. It’s so named for its bear-like fur, which is thick and dark, but like other marsupials, it carries its young in a belly pouch.

Jungle & Rainforest Photography Tips

The jungle is fascinating and begs to be photographed. Whether you’re an amateur or professional, you will certainly find many different subjects along your tour through the jungle. The weather and water can sometimes create issues, so be sure you exercise proper camera care as you explore the many wonderful parts of the jungle.

1. Bring a lens cloth - And have it readily accessible before you begin shooting. Jungle environments are often 100% humid, and this can cause extreme fogging on your lens. While this can create interesting effects, it’s most likely not the effect you’re looking for.

2. Use a strap that’s made of soft, durable, water-resistant material . This is a bit a personal preference. However, as you’ll be hiking through dense rainforest, in very warm, humid weather, getting sweatier and not drying off, the generic strap to your DSLR may get irritating and itchy quickly. You can fashion your own strap fairly easily (check out some tutorials around the web), using a softer cloth material which will be much more comfortable throughout the long days of trekking.

3. Get to know the animals . Familiarizing yourself with various species patterns and habits will reveal certain facets of their personalities you may want to capture on film, as well as where the best spots to find them are, and what time of day or night. Also try to determine in advance any animals you’re looking forward to photographing and ask your tour guide if they have any special tips.

4. Bring a macro lens.  If you’re not as comfortable with different lenses, using the automatic macro setting on your DSLR will suffice, but using the official lens will transform your photographs even more. Particularly for shooting the unbelievable plant life, being able to add creative focal points and composition with a macro lens is a wonderful asset.

5. Be respectful and patient . It can be frustrating for a wild animal to not sit in the perfect spot long enough for you to get the best shot possible. But patience is a virtue when it comes to wildlife photography. Try and book a tour that will return to various spots at different times of day, as this will increase your chances of capturing a truly wonderful image of that elusive species.

6. Don’t eliminate people from all your photos . While the wildlife is certainly the focal point of a journey through the jungle, a human presence can create a powerful and interesting dynamic. Your entire comment and composition will change, and also you’ll be able to look back and remember the people on your jungle tour (hopefully with fondness!). Additionally, you may meet native tribes and explore villages deep within the jungle, where you’ll definitely want to take some meaningful portraits.

What Are the Threats to the World’s Rainforests?

While we try to reduce our carbon footprint for the greater environmental good of the planet, much positivity can come from visiting and supporting rainforest communities. Even before we consider a trip to one of the world’s most beautiful rainforests, it’s important to understand their vulnerability. At one point, these lush jungles covered 15 percent of our planet’s land area. That percentage is down to six. And just in the past 50 years alone, nearly 60 thousand square miles of rainforest are lost annually.

Among the top threats to the rainforests of the world are:

There has been increased demand worldwide for tropical hardwoods, leading to an increase in (often illegal) logging activity in some of the world’s most beautiful rainforests. As beautiful as a Brazilian rosewood might be in one’s home, is it worth putting one of the most spectacular ecosystems at serious risk?

2. Cattle grazing

Once rainforest areas are logged or burned, that cleared land is sold to farmers for cattle racing. This then leads to significant leaps in carbon emissions.  Soya plantations. Much of the world’s livestock population ingests a high protein plant called soya. And most of the world’s soya is grown in South American where, in the past, rainforests stood.

3. Palm oil

Palm oil can be found in many of the products we use on a regular basis, from shampoo to breakfast cereal to cleaning products. Valuable rainforest is harvested to grow the oil palm plant, a valuable cash crop, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia. And it doesn’t stop there. When the rainforests are burned, the peatland below the surface, which contains huge amounts of carbon, is burned as well. The peatlands in Indonesia alone contribute to four percent of Earth’s greenhouse gases.

Humans have long known that beneath the world’s most beautiful rainforests lie mineral and gold deposits. While many acres of rainforest, in Indonesia, for example, are now protected by law from prospecting and mining, there is the ability for underground mining in certain areas.

Once the underground mining infrastructure is created, loggers and poachers gain access to the area illegally. Brazil is home to the world’s largest iron ore mine and the rainforest there is under threat of being opened for mineral exploration.

5. Hydroelectricity

While it hardly seems fair, hydroelectricity, one of our renewable energy resources, is partly to blame for the deforestation for the rainforests. When hydroelectric dams were built after 2006 in Brazil, there was major flooding, which harmed wildlife and the local ecosystem.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, yogyakarta – the journey’s beginnings.

Yogyakarta possesses the heart of the island of Java, central to artistic heritage and Javanese language. Customs continue unadulterated, protected by the sultan, whose royal palace retains a deep connection to traditional life. Your flight lands at Adisutjipto International Airport. Your private transfer meets you at baggage claim and escorts you into the wealth of urban life in the center of the city. Malls and cafes mix with archeological attractions. You take the time to settle into your luxurious hotel erected during the colonial era. The interior décor fuses traditional Javanese style with classical European comforts, along with an elegant swimming pool that feels like a private spa and resort.

Your guide meets you in the hotel lobby and takes you to a batik workshop to learn the traditional art. The workshop fills with the aroma of wood shavings and paint. The colors from drying textiles bring rainbow hues to the forefront of the workspace. Your instructor explains the art of producing colored designs by applying wax to the textiles before dying them, leaving parts of the cloth untouched. After a quick demonstration, your instructor hands you some fabric. The cloth is soft in your hands, and the wax is firm but pliable. You find a basic traditional pattern of swirling circles bordered by straight lines, allowing you to create a stunning combination of vibrant colors bursting from the different shapes.

What's Included:

Yogyakarta – Out Amongst the City

In the morning, the aroma of fresh rambutan overtakes the rich scent of freshly brewed Javanese coffee. The exotic fruit reminds you of your tropical location. After breakfast, your local guide meets you at the hotel eager to take you on a private tour of the city’s historical and cultural splendor beginning with the sultan’s palace known as Kraton . The compound was erected in the 18th century, complete with grand chambers set inside a series of surrounding walls. The complex houses up to 25,000 people, containing a marketplace, shops, mosques, and a bustling silver industry. Street vendors sell pineapple and oranges along the outer ring with the innermost group of structures housing the current sultan.

Your guide points out the European flourishes along the interior. However, the exterior design remains a stunning example of opulent Javanese architecture. The connection to heritage is palpable in the city, especially at the heart of the palace complex where elderly statesmen wear traditional Javanese dress. Two sacred banyan trees grow in the northern square, dating back to the days of feudal Java when petitioners in white robes would sit in the trees’ shade hoping to catch the eye of the passing king. You continue to Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, displaying thousands of impressive stone carvings.

Surakarta – Shrines and Temples of the past

In the morning, you sip a refreshing cup of Javanese coffee, enjoying the rich flavors of the roasted beans grown and cultivated on an Indonesian island. The accompanying aroma of fresh pineapple creates a surprisingly harmonious combination. Your private transfer meets you in the hotel lobby after the meal and leads you to the 9th century Hindu temples at Prambanan. The UNESCO World Heritage Site contains shrines dedicated to the Hindu Trinity, known as Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The temple compound is located less than 10 miles outside of Yogyakarta and was erected as Bandung Bondowoso’s proof of love for Princess Loro Jonggrang. A mystical ambiance sweeps through the stone figures, emanating from the textured towers looming above the grounds.

The temples contain both Shaivite and Buddhist architectural and spiritual elements due to the marriage of two dynasties. You make your way to the Shiva temple to view the outstanding examples of Hindu art. The tower reaches a height of 130 feet tall and houses a collection of statues dedicated to Shiva and Durga, an invincible divinity. The sporadic trees add context to the immense height of the numerous shrines. The three main structures contain bas-reliefs telling the narrative of the epic Bhagavata Purana and Ramayana, carved along the inner balustrades. After exploring the wonders of the temple grounds, you venture to Surakarta, the cultural sister of Yogyakarta, to tour the stunning collection of classical artwork on display in the 18th-century Mangkunegaraan Palace.

Mount Bromo – Along the Scenic Rail

In the morning, the sunlight glints off the pristine elegance of the central kraton . Traditional markets open with colorful exotic fruits shining against mounds of rice. Students from around the world linger in the cafes and sip strong black coffee cultivated in the nearby countryside. After breakfast, you have a private transfer to the train station where you board a first class car for the scenic ride east to Surabaya. The relaxing ride travels along the winding railway, highlighting the emerald and jade hues of the rice paddy fields and tropical forest. Hummingbird trees grow beneath the jungle canopy cast by dark red meranti trees.

White petals stand out along the lower leaves, growing from white orchid trees, which can reach a height of nearly 10 feet tall. The glimpse of the Java rainforest calls to you, radiant with verdant leaves and dense trees, and 650 bird species. Your guide meets you at the Surabaya station and leads you the remainder of the way to the village of Ngadisari, which stands on the foothills of Mount Bromo. Fern trees spread across the slopes. The crisp, cool air replaces the tropical moisture of Solo. Rice fields spread across the lowlands, with distinctly segmented borders. Sporadic homes rise out of the tall grass beneath the lingering trees. The herbaceous scent of the landscape blends with the cooler mountain air beneath the active volcanic peak of Mount Bromo.

Kalibaru – The Thrills of the Countryside

In the morning, wrap your hands around a hot mug of a freshly brewed cup of coffee, allowing the richness from the drink and the warmth of the cup to ease you into dawn. Your guide meets you before sunrise, eager to lead you to the top of Mount Bromo before the sun begins to rise. You step onto a four-wheel-drive jeep ready to ascend the steep slopes. In the darkness, the wind carries a sharp bite. In the absence of a nearby city, the stars sweep across the sky, adding another layer of charm to the secluded region.

You reach the top of Mount Penanjakan, the highest viewpoint in the area at an altitude of nearly 9,100 feet above sea level. The sunlight peeks over the distant horizon, spreading layers of color above the rolling ridges. Beneath you swells a sea of mist. Burnt auburn and red melts into a fading yellow until the clear blue sky returns. The mist below the mountaintops dissipates, revealing radiant greenery. The sun continues to rise into the air as you mount a horse to travel along the less than two-mile distance between Mount Penanjakan and Mount Bromo.

The conical volcanic peak grows as you venture closer. The verdant slopes become rugged hills, paved with loose dirt resembling the landscape of the moon. The peak reaches 7,639 feet above sea level. The arid landscape makes the peaks rising out of the sand resemble Egyptian pyramids with steam puffing out of the fumaroles. Riding on horseback makes you feel like an adventurer in search of the next thrill located inside the caldera of Indonesia’s most active volcano.

Ijen – In the Company of Coffee

In the morning, you wake up in the village of Kalibaru, located on a small hill overlooking the rainforest. The refreshing climate and elevated position make the surrounding landscape perfect for growing cloves and coffee. Outside of your accommodation, you find the air hinted with sweet and enticing spice. After breakfast, you venture to a local coffee plantation to learn about the cultivation of one of Java’s most prized exports. Along the road to the plantation, your guide points out rubber trees and livestock, farmers tending to the rice paddies and villagers returning home carrying buckets of fresh water.

Once on the plantation, your guide leads you along the sloped hills to see the actual coffee plants thriving in the cooler tropical temperatures. The beans resemble berries growing beneath the verdant leaves. They look nothing like the grainy bean you expected to find. The aroma is slightly sweet, and the texture of the crop is a bit waxy between your fingers. At the residence, locals wet and peel the berries, taking away the outer skin before placing the red fruits in drying racks.

Only after desiccation do the beans resemble the coffee you know. Your guide explains that they must first roast the beans to help release the natural flavors of the plant, an important step in any coffee production. At the end of the tour, you find the scent of freshly brewed coffee overtaking the herbaceous aroma of the surrounding trees. You take a small sip of the hot coffee searching for the flavors your guide suggested, such as caramel and cinnamon, natural flavors taken from the soil and uniquely enriching each crop.

Lovina – Stunning Mountaintops to Refreshing Coastline

You wake once again before sunrise, setting out on a guided tour from the base camp at Mount Ijen. The crisp, cold air brushes against your cheeks but your excitement overtakes the elements. Your guide leads you along the trail, stopping sporadically to ensure the flashlights are leading you in the right direction. The adventure is thrilling, lit with meandering headlands, flashlights, and the abundance of starlight twinkling in what remains of the night sky. You use a bamboo staff to help with the steeper sections of the hike, reaching the rim of the caldera after two miles. The rugged rocks rise along the slopes if the caldera’s interior. You traverse the path, holding tightly to the handrails.

The night begins to glow with an ethereal electric blue. The radiance actually stems from flames burning at the base of the caldera. The distinctive color shining beneath the night sky is unlike anything you have ever seen before. The sun rises over the crater and offers a stretch of light to the indigo waters of the lake, which reaches a temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. You exit the crater and the view changes from the unique blue flames and glowing water to the verdant hillsides leading you down the mountainside. Your private transfer escorts you to the coastline at which you board a ferry for the welcoming and relaxing Balinese shores at Lovina Beach.

Ubud – On the Temple Edge

In the morning, the sunlight glints off the narrow black sand beaches bordering the smooth stretch of verdant trees bordering the coastline. The tranquil ambiance provides a perfect chance to embrace the colorful combination of the land and sea. The water is warm and inviting. The sand is soft and comfortable beneath the tropical sunlight. Your private transfer meets you at the hotel after breakfast, ready to take you on full-day tailored Bali tours through the central mountains and along the volcanic rim of Mount Batur before reaching the cultural center of Ubud. The road up the mountainside contains thrilling hairpin turns offering views to the emerald terraced rice paddies overtaking the lower hills.

Coconut palms soar into the sky providing scattered shade below. On the edges of the nearby slopes of Mount Agung, you reach the largest and holiest of the Hindu temples in Bali, known as Pura Besakih. The temple sits atop the mountainside at 3,280 feet above sea level. The complex contains 23 separate structures erected over six tiers. Stone dvarapala , guards often taking the shape of demons, flank the stairways, which ascend through the split gate to reach the courtyard of the main temple. The central shrine is dedicated to the holy trinity of Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu. Flower offerings provide ample color to the stone figures, along with smooth, dyed cloth wrapped around the holy figures.

Ubud – Around the Soul

Fields of green reach the stunning dense forest on the outskirts of Ubud. Pink and white flowers blossom along the frangipani trees. The scent of freshly brewed coffee emanates from the central cafes, and the natural aroma of coconut drifts down from the palm trees. A vibrant rainbow of colors fills the Ubud Art Market. Paintings of traditional ceremonies and the surrounding landscape stand beside handmade beaded jewelry and hand-carved statues. At the heart of town stands the 19th-century Ubud Royal Palace, a landmark of Ubud that connotes regal charm inside Balinese architecture. The grounds also house the dramatic dance performances for which the city is known.

Water lilies bloom on the pond in front of the rising tiered tower of the Taman Saraswati Temple.  Carvings honor the goddess of wisdom and art. At the edge of town, you find the Monkey Forest, a reserve in which three Hindu temples hide beneath the towering trees. Hundreds of macaque monkeys linger along the footpaths and roost in the branches. The lush walkways open to the stone dragon bridge beneath the sounds of rustling leaves and chattering troops. The forest encompasses 30 acres, in which you discover Pura Beji, a temple decorated with dramatic detailed carvings bursting from the walls.

Ubud – The Journey’s Tail End

In the morning, the citrus aroma of pomelo fills the dining room at breakfast. Glints of light fill the windows of Studio Perak, a silversmith workshop outside the center of town. Master tinkerers teach visitors and locals alike the art of crafting the shimmering metal into beautiful works, from necklaces to bracelets using traditional techniques passed down through the generations. The splendor of the city ranges from majestic jewelry to the captivating countryside. When you are ready, your private transfer meets you in the hotel lobby and escorts you to Ngurah Rai International Airport with plenty of time to check-in for your flight home.
